]]> Paris has long been a magnet for writers for hundreds of years, with iconic figures like Victor Hugo, Marcel Proust, Hemingway and Jean-Paul Sartre shaping its literary legacy. In the 19th century, Paris was a bohemian hub for writers, artists, and intellectuals, many of whom found inspiration and camaraderie in the city’s cafés like Les Deux Magots, Café Procope, Café de Flore and Le Café de la Paix. Paris continues to captivate literary minds, offering a haven for dreamers and storytellers alike.

Shakespeare & Company

And if you’re a bookworm like me, you’ve undoubtedly heard of the famed Shakespeare & Co., heralded as one of the best bookstores in Paris. And for good reason! Stepping into Shakespeare and Company in Paris feels like walking into a dream where books come alive. Wooden shelves are tucked into every corner, with book sometimes spilling onto the floor. Narrow pathways lead visitors through this labyrinth, creating a sense of discovery at every turn. However, Shakespeare & Co. draws massive crowds these days! Located in the heart of the Latin Quarter, near iconic landmarks like Notre Dame and the Seine, it’s a natural stop for tourists exploring the city.

To beat the crowds, visiting early in the morning or during off-peak seasons is best. But even when I followed my advice and arrived early, I saw lineups an hour-long along the Seine. If you don’t have all the time in the world to wait in this line, I want you to know plenty of other fabulous bookstores in Paris deserve your time and money. Just a short stroll from Shakespeare & Co., The Abbey Bookshop is a cozy, slightly chaotic wonderland of English-language books. Owned by a delightful Canadian expat who adds a personal touch to the shop, this place is stacked (literally to the rafters!) with novels, travel guides, poetry, and history books. Step inside and let the labyrinth of literature pull you in. Pro tip: They sometimes offer free coffee or tea—perfect for browsing on a chilly day.

Halle Saint Pierre

Hidden at the foot of Montmartre, the bookstore at Halle Saint Pierre is a sanctuary for art lovers and bookworms alike. Housed in a delightful 19th-century building with a unique industrial design, its metal beams and large windows create a bright, open atmosphere, ideal for perusing the extensive collection. This is no ordinary bookstore—it offers a diverse range of books on art, photography, and design, as well as intriguing works that delve into The history and culture of Paris. And to add to its charm, there’s a cozy cafe right inside, perfect for enjoying a coffee while getting lost in a good book or jotting down your thoughts like all those famed writers who came to Paris before you.

Bouquinistes

The bouquinistes along the Seine are a Parisian icon, instantly recognizable by their green metal stalls brimming with books and other ephemeral treasures such as second-hand prints, postcards, and collectables. The term “bouquinistes” comes from the Flemish word “boeckjin,” which means “small book.” Bouquiniste history can be traced back to their origins in the 16th century, a testament to Paris’s enduring love for literature and art. Their rich history, dating back to 1752, is a testament to the enduring love of Paris for literature and art. Browsing here feels more like a treasure hunt than a shopping trip. My favourite finds are vintage French magazines, replete with stunning photography and ads that reflect back the trends of the time.

Librairie Du Passage

Tucked away in the elegant Passage Jouffroy, the Librairie du Passage offers a quiet escape for anyone drawn to books, art, and history. With more than 30,000 titles carefully selected for their focus on creativity and the past, this bookstore feels like a true discovery for those who love to linger among shelves brimming with inspiration. The soft natural light that filters through the passage’s glass ceiling creates a warm, inviting atmosphere, perfect for immersing yourself in these literary treasures.

Le Monte-en-l’air

For a more eclectic experience, head to the vibrant Belleville neighbourhood and visit the artistic haven of Le Monte-en-l’air. If it’s your second or third trip to Paris, Belleville is a lesser-known and authentic district that’s well worth your time, with its lively streets, diverse food scene, and artistic flair. And Belleville Park, a local favourite for relaxation, offers stunning panoramic views of the city. Le Monte-en-l’air, an artsy bookstore, is a treasure trove specializing in graphic novels, quirky zines, and contemporary art books. It’s a hub for avant-garde enthusiasts and will inspire your artistic side that comes alive here in the city of art!

Les Mots à la Bouche

Known for its focus on LGBTQ+ literature, this Marais gem is one of Paris’s most welcoming and inclusive bookstores. They offer a mix of French and English titles, with shelves dedicated to poetry, fiction, and queer studies. The friendly staff is always happy to help you find something meaningful.

Appétit

Appétit is a delightful culinary bookstore nestled in the heart of Paris’s 6th arrondissement, a haven for anyone with a passion for food. Its diverse collection, specializing in cookbooks, gastronomic guides, and food-related literature, spans everything from timeless French recipes to modern takes on global cuisines. Whether you’re a professional chef, a home cook, or simply a foodie, you’re bound to find inspiration on its shelves.

Librairie Voyageurs du Monde

The Librairie Voyageurs du Monde is a must-visit for travel enthusiasts. This bookstore offers a vast selection of travel literature, guides, maps, and atlases. The collection, carefully curated to ensure the highest quality, includes classic and contemporary travel narratives, photography books, and a dedicated children’s section to inspire young adventurers. The store’s inviting atmosphere encourages visitors to explore diverse cultures and destinations through its offerings. These are my favourite kinds of stores to visit when on vacation, to seek out unique books on the city I’m visiting that go beyond traditional travel guides, and to dive into curious subjects like ghosts, gastronomy, and galleries!

Librairie Jousseaume

For those who enjoy books and history, Librairie Jousseaume is a genuine treasure tucked away in the magnificent Galerie Vivienne in the center of Paris. Having been in business since 1862, this is one of the oldest bookstores in the city. The shop is brimming with rare editions, old engravings, vintage postcards and used books. Stepping inside feels like taking a trip back in time, surrounded by cozy wooden selves, vintage signs and rustic decor. With more than 40,000 books here for you to discover, you can spend an entire afternoon perusing the treasures here.

Librairie du Centre Pompidou

The Librairie du Centre Pompidou, located within the renowned Centre Pompidou in Paris, is a must-visit for art enthusiasts, tourists, and researchers. The best part? You don’t need a ticket to get into the bookstore! It’s the largest bookstore in Europe dedicated to modern and contemporary art, boasting an extensive collection of over 15,000 titles. These include monographs, thematic works, historical analyses, and critical studies from the 20th and 21st centuries. The diverse array of publications, such as exhibition catalogues, art books, and multimedia products, many of which are published by the Centre Pompidou’s own editions, is a testament to their supreme work in the field of art books. Even if you’re short on time to explore all the exhibitions, the books here can transport you to another world.

Artazart, situated along the charming Canal Saint-Martin (my favourite spot to relax and people-watch with a coffee), is a beacon for lovers of visual creativity and innovation. Since its opening in 2000, this distinctive boutique has focused on graphic design, photography, and artistic expression, offering an exceptional array of carefully chosen books and collectibles. Standing out vividly against the serene backdrop of the canal, inside, you’ll discover a treasure trove of works showcasing both renowned creators and emerging visionaries, making it a haven for those seeking inspiration across diverse styles and perspectives.

La Régulière

La Régulière is more than just a bookstore—it’s a creative and community-centred space that combines the charm of a café, the curiosity of an art gallery, and the magic of literature! This gem has quickly become a neighbourhood favourite for its thoughtfully curated selection of graphic novels, children’s books, and beautifully illustrated works. A focus on independent and underrepresented publishers makes its collection particularly unique and appealing to those looking for something off the beaten path. It’s a place that celebrates diversity, creativity, and conversation, making it an unforgettable stop for anyone seeking a bookstore with heart and imagination in the city of Paris.

]]> As someone who almost always is head down inside a book, London is one of my favourite cities to explore. You can stroll along the streets, which inspired so many famous novels. Many of London’s historic streets have been almost unchanged for hundreds of years. So much so that it feels like you are stepping back in time and into the pages of a book. Bibliophiles can also take a peek into the homes of iconic writers. The city has been home to many renowned writers, including William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Virginia Woolf, and Jane Austen. As a result of being a writer’s favourite city, the town is replete with incredible libraries and bookshops! It’s truly a bookworm’s dream destination.

But with so many things to see and do and doubtlessly little time to do it in, making an itinerary can be overwhelming. That’s why I’ve created this fantastic one-day itinerary for bibliophiles to explore the best of Literary London. It will take you across the city to explore a mixture of locations novels inspired beautiful book shops, literary homes, writer’s haunts and more. With just one day in the city, you can still pack in plenty of literary sights and experiences. So come with me now on this extraordinary book lover’s guide to London!

8:00 am: Discover Platform 9 3/4 in King’s Cross Station

Start your tour inside King’s Cross Station. Visiting Kings Cross is essential for any book lover visiting London. And as an added bonus, King Cross is a central hub for the underground. Making it an easy journey wherever you are based in London. Almost everyone who has read (or even heard of the Harry Potter series) knows how important the setting of this train station is in the book.

King Cross station served as the setting for Platform 9¾, the magical platform where Hogwarts students catch the Hogwarts Express. Inside King Cross station is a replica of Platform 9¾ outside the Harry Potter Shop Gift Shop. Here you can take your photo with a disappearing trolley headed straight into the wall. Just like in the book!

Getting here extra early is key as the queue to get your photo taken can get over an hour long. But, if you prefer to avoid tourists, simply walking around the station is a dream for book lovers. Exploring the train station places you right inside this iconic setting. I love grabbing a coffee from any nearby cafe and watching commuters rushing about the busy station.

9:00 am: Breakfast at The Betjeman Arms

If you prefer to grab a full sit-down breakfast, they have over the Betjeman Arms. The Betjeman Arms is a charming and cozy pub inside the neighbouring St. Pancras International Station. The pub was named after the famous poet Sir John Betjeman. Betjeman was a passionate advocate for preserving the city’s historic Victorian architecture. And even had a hand in helping to save St Pancras railway station from demolition. The pub’s decor and atmosphere pay homage to his love of Victorian design. If you can book a reservation in advance, ask for a table on the Euston Terrace overlooking King’s Cross.

The menu at the Betjeman Arms offers a selection of traditional British food. If you’ve never had a full English breakfast, this is where to do it! It comes with beer & treacle smoked bacon, Cumberland sausages, fried egg, roasted tomato, chestnut mushrooms, hash browns, and baked beans. At
£13.50 it’s a pretty reasonable price for a huge breakie.

10:00 am: Discover Treasure inside the British Library

After breakfast, it’s time to head to the British Library! The British Library is located along Euston Street, just a minute down the road from the Betjeman Arms. Many people don’t know that the British Library isn’t just a place for reading and borrowing books. The building contains a little museum that exhibits “Treasures of the British Library.” This collection features some of the most remarkable books, manuscripts, and historical documents. The main exhibit hall is free to enter, but there are new exhibitions throughout the year that you can visit by buying a ticket.

British Library Collection

Highlights of the British Library Collection include the original manuscripts of Jane Austen‘s novels, first editions of Shakespeare’s plays, handwritten lyrics by The Beatles and a Gutenberg Bible. One of my favourite parts of the exhibition is the gorgeous illuminated manuscripts, religious texts, and detailed medieval maps. All are gilded in 24-carat gold and brilliantly coloured hand-painted illustrations. It’s amazing to see how vibrant they still are even after hundreds of years. Original sketches by Mervyn Peake, the author of Gormenghast, sit behind glass. I adored this book as a teenager. And seeing the sketches, Peake dreamed up for his characters was wildly exciting and nostalgic.

But most impressively, it is here where you can view the original Magna Carta. The Magna Carta is an enormous document signed by King John of England in 1215. It is considered one of the most important legal documents in history. It established that everyone, including the King, is subject to the law. Seeing it in person and the King’s giant wax seal, almost the size of a dinner plate, was amazingly impressive.

11:00 am: Garden Walk through Bloomsbury

After you’ve had your fill with historical manuscripts, it’s time to walk over to the Charles Dickens Museum in Bloomsbury. It’s only a 15-minute walk from Euston Street. The path takes you through the peaceful St. George’s Gardens, Brunswick Square Gardens, and the old Foundling Hospital.

The Foundling Museum

The Foundling Museum in London is dedicated to the history of the 18th-century Foundling Hospital. One of the first charities established in England to care for abandoned children. Writer Charles Dickens often used the institution and its children as inspiration for his fictional work. Since he lived so close by, he was also a great supporter of the Hospital. He even rented a pew in the Hospital Chapel through which he could make donations to support the hospital’s efforts. His stage play, No Thoroughfare, featured a main character called Walter Wilding, who was raised in the Hospital’s care. Dickens himself led a life that could have resulted in him being cared for by this kind of organization. And he never forgot it. And never took that for granted.

11:30 am Uncover Secrets inside the Charles Dickens Museum

The Charles Dickens Museum is set inside the original Dickens family home at #48 Doughty Street. Dickens and his first wife lived here from 1837 to 1839. Stepping inside, you find the Dickens home almost as if they had just stepped out the front door. Visitors can explore the house’s many rooms, restored to their original 19th-century appearance. And get a sense of what life was like for Dickens and his family.

The collection includes many artifacts related to Dickens’s life and writing. Including manuscripts, letters, and personal items. You can even explore Dickens’ home office, which has been carefully preserved. His old writing desk and chair still sit as if waiting for him to return. It was here he penned some of his most famous works, including “Oliver Twist” and “Nicholas Nickleby.”

12:30 pm: Luncheon at The Lamb

For lunch, head to The Lamb, a historic pub just four minutes east of the museum, on Guildford Place. The Lamb Pub was originally built in the 1720s as a coaching inn for travellers. And its location near the British Museum made it a popular spot for scholars and academics. As a local to the area, Charles Dickens was known to frequent the pub. Perhaps coming here after a long day of writing to relax and unwind.

In the late 18th century, the pub became a hub for political radicals and intellectuals. This included members of the Bloomsbury Group. They were a circle of writers, artists, and thinkers whose members were made up of Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster, and John Maynard Keynes. The group often met at the Lamb to discuss their ideas and hold literary salons.

Today, the Lamb Pub is a popular neighbourhood watering hole and a beloved piece of Bloomsbury’s rich cultural heritage. Its walls are adorned with historical artifacts and memorabilia, providing a glimpse into its storied past. And mementos of the many important figures passing through its doors. The pub serves traditional British fare and has a cozy, old-world atmosphere. You’ve got to have beer-battered fish with triple-cooked chips, pea puree and tartare sauce to complete this British experience.

1:30 pm The London Review Bookshop

Don’t overeat because you want to save some room for dessert! Walk along Great Ormond Street and Bloomsbury Square to the London Review Bookshop. Yes, that’s right, dessert inside a bookshop! The dream of dreams. The London Review Book is also home to a Cake Shop inside their charming and cozy interior. This delightful café is the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a delicious sweet treat.

Upon entering the café, visitors are greeted with the scent of freshly baked cakes and pastries. And the warm and welcoming atmosphere invites them to stay awhile. The London Review Cake Shop menu features an array of delectable treats, ranging from classic sponge cakes to more exotic delights like cardamom and rosewater cake. Find a great book to buy and sit outside in their courtyard with a delicious slice of cake. It’s the perfect way to spend a quiet afternoon.

2:30 pm Walk Through Seven Dials

After you’re done, take a walk 15-minutes south along Monmouth Street. I know there is a tube station nearby but you’d only be taking it one-stop. And trust me, the walk is a great opportunity to see the historic neighbourhood of Seven Dials. The Seven Dials area gets its name from the distinctive layout of seven intersecting streets, which converge around a central pillar. The area has a rich literary history, home to many famous writers and poets. Charles Dickens, in particular, had a strong connection to the Seven Dials. He used it as a setting for several of his novels, including “Sketches by Boz” and “Oliver Twist.“

3:00 pm Cecil Court

Make your way onto Cecil Court. Cecil Court is a narrow, pedestrian-only street called the “Booksellers’ Row.” Here is where you’ll find a variety of independent bookshops that line the cobblestone alley. The area dates back to the 17th century, and the original shopfronts are set inside quaint Victorian-era buildings.

Cecil Court is where one can easily spend hours browsing the shelves, discovering rare and unusual titles. The bookshops in Cecil Court are staffed by knowledgeable and passionate booksellers who are always happy to recommend titles or offer insights into the area’s history. Shopping here is almost like going inside tiny museums. Their collections a treat to simply browse through.

4:00 pm Sherlock Holmes Pub

Before heading across the river, let’s quickly stop for a pint inside the Sherlock Holmes Pub. Walking along Charing Cross Road towards the Strand, where you’ll find the Sherlock Holmes Pub on Northumberland Street. The Sherlock Holmes Pub is a hot spot for fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s famous detective. The pub is spread over two floors, with the ground floor serving as the main bar area, while the upper floor is a restaurant. And mini exhibition hall.

The upstairs is home to a small recreation of Holmes’ famous Baker Street flat, which includes some rare memorabilia. But throughout the pub, you’ll find Victorian decor, wood panelling, and Sherlockiana. Even if you just want to pop in for a pint, you can check out the upstairs area without booking a reservation for dinner. Tell them you just want a look, and they’ll happily let you inside.

4:30 pm Great Scotland Yard

Crossing Northumberland street, jet over to neighbouring Great Scotland Yard. The street’s name derives from the 17th century when the area was home to the royal residence of visiting Scottish kings and queens. Effectively the Scottish Embassy. But perhaps the most famous literary connection to Great Scotland Yard is the fact that it was the location of the original headquarters of the Metropolitan Police Service. Established here in 1829. And who is the most famous British detective who would have worked out of Scotland Yard? You guessed it, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes would have called this place home were he not, in fact, a fictional character.

5:00 pm Crossing the Thames River

Our final destination is at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre which can be found across the River Thames along the Southbank. To get there, you can take the tube from Embankment underground station on the Circle or District Line, three stops to Mansion House station. Then just walk across Southwark Bridge to Shakespeare’s Globe.

But if you’re looking for a more fun and scenic way to get to the Globe, consider taking a boat! Embankment Pier is just a few minutes from Great Scotland Yard, where you can hop on the Thames Clipper. This isn’t a “River Cruise” or “Boat Cruise” but a public transport service along the water.

Tickets

You can use contactless payment with your Oyster card to buy a single ticket. Using your Oyster card, a single ticket to Bankside station will cost £5.20. If you have the Uber app installed on your phone, you can buy tickets directly through their app. If you don’t have either not to worry, you can buy tickets at the ticket office or ticket machines inside the station. These tickets cost £5.70, so you do save some money if you have the app or use an Oyster card. While £5 is more expensive than riding the tube, the 10-minute ride along the Thames river is an amazing way to see the city skyline and riverside buildings.

6:00 pm: Admire the Theatrics at Shakespeare’s Globe

The most famous of all British writers is doubtlessly William Shakespeare! And ending your day here at Shakespeare’s Globe in Southwark feels like a perfect epilogue to your storied visit to London. Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is a reconstruction of the original Globe Theatre, built in 1599. The original Globe was the primary performance venue for William Shakespeare’s plays. The modern reconstruction was opened in 1997 after more than two decades of planning and construction. The construction of the new Globe took so long because they wanted to use historic equipment and techniques in remaking the historic landmark. The few modern additions were a state-of-the-art sprinkler system to ensure the thatch roof didn’t burn down, destroying the building again.

The result is an incredibly faithful reconstruction of the original theatre. Giving visitors a glimpse into the theatrical world of Shakespeare’s time. The theatre is an open-air venue with a circular stage surrounded by seating for the audience. The stage is uncovered, and performances occur in natural light during the day, just as they would have done in the 16th and 17th centuries.

But there are also night performances under modern flood lighting. While I loved the experience of seeing a play in the day without the use of modern technology, it didn’t feel atmospheric. There is something more immersive about the evening performance, where the rest of the theatre seems to disappear, and you can focus on the actors in front of you.

Tickets to the Globe Theatre

You can even purchase a standing-room ticket in the “Yard’, just like the poorest London citizens would have bought in the 16th century to ensure they got to see the latest Shakespearean production. There are also seated tickets in the lower, middle or upper galleries. Tickets in the Yard start at only £5.00, and seated tickets start at £25. I would advise you to go for the seated tickets after a long day of pounding the pavement around London. Relax and enjoy a production of one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays in this historic landmark.

9:00 pm Drinks at The George Inn

If you have any energy left, you can head to the George Inn for a late-night pint of beer! This historic pub is just 10 minutes from the Globe and dates back to the 17th century! It is the only surviving galleried coaching inn in London. It was named ‘Shakespeare’s Local,’ as the George Inn was a popular gathering place for actors and playwrights from the Globe during the Elizabethan era. Including Shakespeare himself!

In the 19th century, Charles Dickens referred to the George Inn in his novel “Little Dorrit,” describing it as a place where characters would gather for a drink and discuss their trials and tribulations. Today, the pub has indoor and outdoor seating area, making it one of my favourite spots to come in the summertime to enjoy a beer under the warm night sky. It really is the perfect spot to finish a gorgeous day exploring London literary history.

And there is no better way to escape the cold than to duck into a charming bookstore, especially those serving a hot cup of coffee! Coffeeshop bookstores have become one of the trendiest little treasures in a bustling city like New York. These little reading nooks are the best place to get warmed up and relax inside, away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Grab a cup of your favourite warm beverage, snuggle up into a well-worn leather armchair with a new book, and the cold will simply melt away. So come with me as I bring you on a guided tour of the Best Cafe Bookshops in New York City! 

Whether you love science fiction, mystery novels or just chilling with the classics (or anything in between), these 10 bookshops in NYC will have something unique to offer everyone who loves a good read. I’ve been sure throughout this guide to include only cafe bookshops with space to sit and read. While some popular bookstores in New York have their own coffee counters, many only offer them to go, and we are looking for spots on this tour where you can really hunker down for the afternoon.

Cafe con Libros

Cafe con Libros is literally translated into “coffee with books,” so you know you’ve come to the right place. This cozy little bookshop is hidden in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighbourhood. The bookshop is best known for being a black-owned feminist store featuring healing, empowering and enriching books. What could sound more comforting than that?

Their little window seats are the perfect place to get cozy and watch the world go by. The coffee is rich and delicious, and their freshly made pastries are the ideal accompaniment to nosh on while you read. Every Sunday, there is a book club meet-up, and the sense of community in this space is unrivalled.

McNally Jackson Books

Nolita is New York’s “North of Little Italy” neighbourhood best known for its charming buildings, upscale designers and trendy boutiques. Prince Street is known for its popup jewelry and artwork vendors that swarm the street on weekends. Also along Prince Street is the McNally Jackson Books. McNally Jackson Books is a New York independent bookseller with four locations across the city. And while their location on Prince Street is far from the largest, it is indeed the most adorable.

This shop is known for its unique curated collection of recommended books. Its “New York Reads” section is incredible for tourists. You can pick up a book that is set or inspired by the city that never sleeps. Be sure to look up when visiting! Books hung from the ceiling, like paper airplanes flying across the store.

The cafe towards the back of the shop is serving up some incredible brews and delicious baked goods. The french toast bagel is just one example of their amazing creations! This place always has me coming back to see what’s new. Park yourself in the cafe seating area to savour the smells and sounds of this endearing bookshop.

The Center for Fiction

In the centre of Brooklyn, you’ll find this monolith of literature; the Center for Fiction! The walls are toweringly high, with a huge ladder required to access the books on the tallest shelves. Like a modern-day version of Beauty and the Beast’s baroque library. The Center for Fiction opened its brick-and-mortar bookshop in 2019. The shop features floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing light to stream inside in the most heavenly way. Compared to some of the other bookstores on this list which are more dark academia, this place is contemporary chic!

In addition to their incredible selection of books, they also frequently hold panels, lectures, seminars, reading groups, and conversations. Often led by some of the nation’s most beloved writers. Their cozy cafe and bar is a fantastic spot to come and grab a bite to eat while enjoying your newest book purchase. There are so many people here writing away on notepads and computer screens. Like you can feel the next big novel written right in the room! The vibes here are unrivalled, and it is one of the most peaceful places in the city to come, shop and relax with a cup of coffee.

The Drama Book Shop

As New York City is home to Broadway and one of, if not the BEST, places to see live theatre! And visiting the Drama Book Shop feels like a truly New Yorkian outing! Open since 1917, the Drama Book Shop has been a mainstay of the New York theatre scene and a cultural institution. One of my favourite parts of going inside is admiring the decor. They always go all out with the store’s styling, and I’m sure they get some set decorators to help them create these fantastical displays. The most impressive is the “book tornado” that spirals throughout the store. Whirling you into a dizzying book-buying frenzy!

Historic posters from Broadway’s past line the walls. If you are a thespian book lover, you’ll be in heaven. But it’s not just playbooks and musical scores that you’ll find here. There are many books about acting, non-fiction about theatre and history books all about Broadway past and present. There is also a fantastic collection of biographies from renowned actors and writers. If you ever wanted to know the secrets of the stage, you’ll find them in the books here.

Although the shop has been open for over 100 years, it only recently moved to this new location. The new shop was designed by Hamilton set designer David Korins. It was created to pay homage to twentieth-century European reading room cafes. So, in addition to all 8,000 playbooks, they also have a full-service cafe! I love sitting in here, because as a musical lover, they really do have the BEST playlist!

Molasses Books

If you’re looking for a cute used bookstore in the middle of the trendy Bushwick neighbourhood, look no further than Molasses Books. Molasses Books is a small, independent publishing house focusing on poetry, contemporary writers, and out-of-print or public domain works. Their brick-and-mortar shop in Bushwick, Brooklyn, is home to a varied collection of used books. You’ll never know what you’ll find here, but you can always expect it to be good.

The great thing about Molasses Books is that they are open from 11 am to midnight. If you’re a night owl, this is the spot for you to come to get some late-night reading done. In addition to coffee and tea, they are a fully licensed bar. So if you’re craving something a little stronger than cold brew.

New York Public Library Cafe

One of the most incredible interiors in all of New York City has got to the awe-inspiring New York Public Library. Inside the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. The NYC Public Library’s main branch was built in the late 1890s. The interiors were constructed in the Beaux-Arts style and featured one of the most beautiful reading rooms in the entire world. The reading room was meant to improve the morale of readers during the Great Depression. The room was meant to imbue visitors with a sense of wonder as they walked in. And even a hundred years later, I always get goosebumps walking inside.

Whether you’re a visitor or a local, you can enter this pantheon of reading and browse their collection. Tourists can’t check out books, but you’re welcome to explore. And if you’re looking to sit and enjoy a warm cup of coffee, then Amy’s Bread has you covered. Recently, Amy’s Bread opened a new location inside the Library Shop. Here, all visitors can come and grab an espresso and one of their incredible handmade pastries. Amy’s has been open in New York for over thirty years in Hell’s Kitchen. And now they have seven different shops open across the city! 

The best part of a visit to the library is that entrance to the building is free. So other than your coffee and sweet treat, the experience won’t cost you a dime! No need to buy any books. You can simply browse the shelves, find something that perks your interest and sit down to enjoy.

Shakespeare & Co

Shakespeare & Co is a well-known name in the literary game, opening their flagship store in Paris (of all places for a shop named after the English playwright.) But in 1983, they opened their New York City location along Lexington Avenue, on the Upper East Side.

Recently, the bookshop introduced a small but top-notch cafe among the hundreds of books inside. The baristas here are friendly, and the quaint little area where you can sit and enjoy your coffee while reading is the perfect size to feel nice and cozy. The cafe also features a daily selection of Dough donuts. If you know Dough, you’ll learn how delicious these sweet pastries really are! And what’s better than doughnuts and coffee…and books?! 

Barnes & Noble

Although visiting a Barnes & Noble might sound like a boring and basic thing to do when visiting the Big Apple, the Barnes & Noble on Union Square is actually the biggest bookstore in Manhattan! This Barnes & Noble is also located inside the old headquarters of the Century Publishing Company. And the building it now resides in was built in 1881. The stunning brick and copper engravings are still the beacon of literacy that draw many into it today. Walking inside, look at the old iron columns, wooden bookshelves and library ladders. It always makes me feel like I’ve stepped back in time. And I love the store’s effort to preserve this slice of New York architectural history.

On the 3rd floor, you’ll find their coffee shop. Their cafe is vast, and there is lots and lots of space to spread out! The windows that face south also feature a gorgeous view across Union Square park, the Flatiron building and the south Manhattan skyline! Sure the coffee might be Starbucks, but the environment is so friendly and open, and you can almost always find a spot to sit! Plus, public bathrooms are a key essential any visitor knows comes in clutch. One of the other advantages of visiting such a big brand in this iconic location is often it is where authors come to have signing events. So check their schedule to see who’s in town. But hundreds of signed books are also spread out throughout the store, like hidden treasure waiting to be found.

Housing Works Bookstore

People celebrated on the streets across the city when it was announced that the Housing Works Bookstore cafe had reopened after the pandemic. Ok, well, not literally, but when this literary touchstone was finally reopened, it was definitely a cause for celebration. The Housing Works Bookstore is another historic building transformed into a chic bookshop. It is so popular that it is often booked out on the weekends as a fashionable venue for weddings. It was even featured in Taylor Swift’s music video for her smash hit All Too Well.

The Housing Works Bookstore has been open downtown in New York for over a decade. Unlike any other shop on this list, 100% of the profits from the book sales go to fund Housing Works’ lifesaving services. Their cafe is the perfect place to immerse yourself in their cozy atmosphere. In addition to beverages and food, you can also pick up a cocktail at the bar.

Book Club

Located in the heart of the East Village is the aptly named Book Club, one of the best independent bookstores and bars in town. Whether it’s coffee, NY state craft beer, wine, romance novels, mystery books or autobiographies that you’re looking for, you’re bound to find that here! The owners who started the Book Club wanted to create a space in the city’s centre where you could feel nice and cozy while surrounded by the most lovingly curated collection of books.

One of the shop’s most exciting aspects is that it is open till midnight but is laptop free after 7pm! This is meant to encourage people to chat with each other, make friends and take book recommendations in the evening when the wine is flowing. This a great reminder to turn off the computer or put down your phone and enjoy a bit of screen-free time with new friends. Plus, this place has some great music too! The vibes here are immaculate.

]]> Every year, when the leaves start to turn colours, I make myself a cozy cup of chai, grab a fuzzy blanket and hunker down to watch an Autumnal vibey movie. My favourite? You’ve Got Mail. If you’ve not seen, You’ve Got Mail (but let’s be serious, how could you not have?), it’s all about struggling bookshop owner named Kathleen Kelly (played by Meg Ryan.) Katheleen inadvertently falls for her business rival (played by the ever charming Tom Hanks.) Although the movie’s storyline spans the entire year, the majority of it is set in New York in the fall. And as such it has become one of those movies people just have to watch as soon as the weather gets cold.

When visiting New York City this fall, I knew I had to honour this season of reading season by visiting all the Best Book Stores in New York City. I felt like Kathleen Kelly herself as I made my way across the city. Searching out the most enchanting and adorable bookshops along the way. They all filled me with anticipation to get cozy and do some reading when I got home. Like I was bringing those autumnal vibes from the city that never sleeps home with me! One of the reasons I love buying books when on vacation is that it feels like they embue a sense of the place they came from. And memories you’ll never forget.

Before Halloween, fall is the season for getting cozy. Light a few candles and cuddle up under a warm blanket. And to perfect the evening, grab a good book for the ultimate autumnal night in. And there is no where better to find that ideal fall novel, than in New York City itself!

Books are Magic

Walking along the charming streets of Cobble Hill, you might almost miss the rather subtle exterior of my favourite bookshop! Found on the corner of Butler and Smith Street in Brooklyn. Emma Straub, an award-winning author, founded the Book Are Magic bookshop in 2017. This shop is designed in the industrial Scandinavian style, which lends itself to being a little bit more relaxed and unassuming. But stepping inside, the fantastical colourful books lining the shelves makes any chance a subtly an impossibility.

Perhaps because the store is run by an author herself, the collection’s curation is unrivalled! I always come here with nothing in mind to buy. Instead, I leave it up to the recommended section. And I’ve never ever come away disappointed. One of the cutest parts of the shop is the mural on the side of the building. I stellar place to get your defacto Instagram shot with your newest literary purchase!

The Strand Bookshop

Back in the 1890s, fourth avenue was chock-a-block filled with bookshops. Forty-eight different bookstores once lined this stretch of New york City. It was nicknamed “Book Row.” It flourished for years but after the Great Depression, many of these bookshops were forced to close. Later one, the ones that remained were driven out by rising rental prices in the 1960s. Eventually, every single one of these bookstores on Book Row closed down. Every single shop, but one. And that was Strand Books. 

Strand Books first opened here in 1927 by Lithuanian immigrant Benjamin Bass. Bass opened the store with just $300 in his pocket. During the first year, Bass slept on a small cot inside the store to save money. Such was his dedication to his store and his love of books. Bass was close with several influencial members of the Stuyvesant family. The Stuyvesant’s owned a massive swath of land throughout New York. It was this lucky relationship with the Stuyvesants, that kept Bass afloat during the depression. After making it through tough times, the Strand became a historic staple of the neighbourhood. Growing in popularity year over year.

The Strand Today

Today, the bookshop remains loved by locals and tourists alike. The company’s slogan is “18 Miles Of Books” as you’ll find the shelves inside stocked with over 2.5 million books. Stepping inside can be an overwhelming experience at first. But eventually, the waves of books on the shelves almost lull you into a gentle rhythm. One of my favourite parts of the store are the themed tables in the centre of the store. The different categories allow you to discover the best of the best of these other subjects. As curated by expert bookworms at the Strand. Since the Strand is a pretty famous New York institution, there is also a plentiful selection of signed author copies of new publications! So if you’re a collector this is a must-see spot for you.

POWERHOUSE @ IC

POWERHOUSE @ IC is located inside one of my favourite new spots in Brooklyn; Industry City. Industry City, as the name states, was constructed inside a series of old industrial buildings. Set outside a historic intermodal shipping and warehousing complex. The decor of the new POWERHOUSE @ IC shop fits well within this industrial complex. Bright yellow paint highlights the store shelves and flooring, while the rest of the interior features exposed cement walls. It’s rather austere but makes the books on the shelves works of art on display.

POWERHOUSE @ IC prides itself on featuring a wonderfully curated selection of books that focus on design, art, DIY, food, drink, and entertaining. Each of these categories is distinctly representative of the creative spirit of Industry City. Their selection of art books was incredible. I have a growing collection of Frida Kahlo books, and I was amazed to find several books I had never seen before! Situated inside the food hall, it is very appropriate that they feature an exclusive collection of gorgeous cookbooks. If you are travelling with kids, check out their charming children’s book area. Its’s ideally set up for kids to browse and features some beautifully illustrated books for kids.

Spoonbill & Sugartown Books

Stumbling onto Spoonbill & Sugartown Books, while wandering in Williamsburg, was a real pleasant surprise. This cozy independent bookstore specializes in rare art, architecture and design titles. All things that are right up my streets! I was overwhelmed by the gorgeous titles pouring off the shelves when I stepped inside. Set up within this old brownstone, complete with vintage tin ceiling, it feels like the bookshop grew around this new trendy neighbourhood.

While most of the books at the front of the store are new, they also have a smaller selection of used books at the back . These are always filled with treasures, so don’t skip that section over. They have a wonderful selection of LGBTQ+ stories and a superb poetry collection. The translated poetry being my favourite. They also sell a small but fabulous sampling of independent magazines representing New York City’s culture, fashion and art.

Albertine

There is no more magical bookstore in New York City than Albertine. Walking in here feels like entering the Divination classroom in Hogwarts. The bookshop is located inside the upscale Payne Whitney mansion on the upper east side. A building that also houses the French Embassy. As part of the French Embassy’s commitment to intellectual exchange, they opened this bookstore that specializes in French & English language books. Inspired by the historic ceilings of French cathedrals, the most iconic part of this bookshop is the incredible ceiling mural. The mural features rich French blue paint covered in golden constellations and planets.

The spaces inside features cozy reading areas where you can lounge on the sofas, taking in the scenery. A great way to spend a rainy afternoon. While many people might not be able to read French and not see a reason to visit the shop, I would advise still checking it out. They have an unparalleled selection of stellar French cookbooks (which are written in English.) And if you’ve ever been interested in learning French they have some amazing books to get you started!

The Morgan Library Shop

The Morgan Library & Museum is one of my favourite hidden gems in New York City. The library features the personal literary collection of financier and cultural benefactor Pierpont Morgan. Morgan’s shelves feature illuminated literary and historical manuscripts, early printed books, and old master drawings and prints. And the entire collection is set inside his majestic Madison Avenue mid-nineteenth-century brownstone. Styled to resemble an Italian Renaissance palazzo, the library is one of the most spectacular places in the city. Admission to visit the library is required (and highly recommended), but you can always step in and visit the gift shop and bookstore for free!

The bookshop is set inside the same gorgeous building, and it feels like walking inside a precious work of art. And what many people don’t know is that the Morgan Library Bookshop is home to one of the city’s best collections of art books. And I was shocked at the discounted books they seem to always have on offer. There is also a vast collection of gifts and stationery if you’re into that kind of thing. If you’re a library lover, this is the place to come to get some pieces that will make a statement on your shelves.

Mysterious Book Shop

Fall is inherently a “spooky season,” and there is no better place to go during this scary time of year than the Mysterious Book Shop. The Mysterious Book Shop is New York’s oldest bookstore specializing in crime and mystery novels. The shelves reaching all the way to the ceiling are stocked to the gills with spine-chilling and intriguing tales. The walls of books act almost like wallpaper, creating this cozy atmosphere.

If you’re into Agatha Christie, Sherlockiana, or just looking to discover a juicy new crime author, this is the place to go! The staff are SUPER knowledgeable and also keen to discuss their new favourites. Their New York City-based mystery section is incredibly cool since you can pick up a book set right in this city. Even long after your vacation, you can pick it up to feel like you’re right back on the streets of New York. They also have a gorgeous selection of rare books, which are a treat to wonder at.

Sweet Pickle Books

Sweet Pickle Books, located in the lower east side, is probably one of the most uniquely themed bookstores in the city. As the name states, they are indeed both a bookstore but also a pickle shop! The store’s concept was inspired by owner Leigh Altshuler‘s mother’s favourite movie Crossing Delancey. The 1988 movie is about a pickle peddler who falls in love with a book dealer. All set in the Lower East Side. Altshuler opened her store during the pandemic after losing her marketing job. She started selling homemade pickles from her apartment, but in 2021, when rental places became more affordable, she switched to a brick-and-mortar location. Since pickles were always such an essential part of the Lower East Side’s Jewish immigrant cusine, Altshuler also feels like her store is an homage to the neighbourhood.

But pickles couldn’t support her business entirely. When she saw how many people were simply giving books away in estate sales, she bought and resold them here. The result is the most haphazard collection, and I meant that in the most endearingly way. Searching the shelves here is a means of discovery, and since her prices are so low, you can find treasures for almost nothing! You never know what you’ll find, except for the pickles, which are always an absolute treat! Don’t miss out on the spicy ones, delicious!

Rizzoli Bookstore

Walking into Rizzoli Bookstore, you feel like you are entering an elegant Italian palazzo. The gorgeous chandeliers, marble floors, rich oak bookshelves and handpainted frescos on the walls make shopping here a luxurious experience. Rizzoli Bookstore has been open in New York for 50 years, although it has only spent half that time in this location on Broadway.

Rizzoli is notable for its incredible collection of independent texts specializing in fantastically illustrated books. If you’re interested in architecture, interior design, fashion, photography, cooking, and applied arts, this is the place for you! Exploring these captivating collections can get you lost for hours. If you’re looking for an extra special gift to get someone, this is the place to go!

McNally Jackson Books

The soaring bookshelves of this two-storey shop in Brooklyn is one of the most beautiful visions a book lover will ever see. It reminds me of so many baroque libraries I’ve visited around the world. McNally Jackson Books is a New York independent bookseller with four locations across the city. Their shop in Brooklyn is my favourite as it blends modern interior design with classical bookshop vibes. Their curation, especially about hyper-specific categories, is terrific, and there is always something new to discover here.

If you’re a journaler, you will definitely appreciate their gorgeous selection of stationery. Hundreds of different pens in every rainbow colour and various leather notebooks are needed to jot down all those precious messages and memories.

The Corner Bookstore

The darling Corner Bookstore, on the literal corner of Madison Avenue, is set inside an old 1890s brick brownstone. Their window displays are filled to the brim with vivid book covers demanding you to come inside. Stepping into this storied building with charming tin ceilings feels quintessentially New York. This neighbourhood mainstay has been open here since 1978. They even still have the original manual cash register. A memento of the olden days.

This store was actually one of the few iconic locations in New York scouted by the set designers for the film, You’ve Got Mail. Despite being a smaller store, they still have a beautifully curated selection of literary fiction, history, biography and children’s works. 

Three Lives & Company

This enchanted corner of New York City is home to the beloved Three Lives & Company bookstore. This legendary spot has stood here for over 40 years in the heart of historic Greenwich Village. You can spot the shop from down the street by the shockingly red door painted to match the red bricks of the old building.

One of the best things about this shop is the staff. I always come here with NOTHING in mind to buy. Instead, I love chatting with the staff to see what they recommend in whatever category I seem drawn to that day. Inside this cozy interior, you can while away the afternoon simply by peering through their fantastical collections.

Desert Island

Walking down this street in Brooklyn, you’ll see the gorgeous retro signage for an old bakery. But inside, you’ll find something altogether different. I wanted to be sure to add a bookshop to this list that specializes in graphic novels. And this is THAT shop. Over the years, graphic novels have become one of the most exciting and captivating forms of literature and stepping into Desert Island books, you’ll know why! Desert Island is decorated with handmade ice-blue stalactite sculptures and gorgeous tapestries hung all over the interior. These decorations are meant to wrap up the visitors in a wonderfully imaginative environment in which to browse their books. The shelves are stocked with thoughtfully curated graphic novels, comic books, sweet treasures and one-of-a-kind prints!

In addition, this store also sells some awesome zines made by local artists. These zines are such a hyper-niche thing. Usually, one-offs are only found here, so grabbing one is like buying up a piece of ephemeral New York art. Desert Island also publishes its own yearly all-illustration newspaper, “Smoke Signal.” These local oddities make the store unique and unlike anything else you’ll find.

The Center for Fiction

In the centre of Brooklyn, you’ll find this monolith to literature; the Center for Fiction! The walls are toweringly high, with a huge ladder required to access the books on the tallest shelves. Like a modern-day version of Beauty and the Beast‘s library. The Center for Fiction is the only nonprofit literary organization in the US. And this store is their first brick-and-mortar bookshop, which opened in 2019. The window side of the shop features floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing light to stream inside in the most heavenly way. Compared to some of the other bookstores on this list which are more dark academia, this place is contemporary chic! 

In addition to their incredible selection of books, they also frequently hold panels, lectures, seminars, reading groups, and conversations led by some of the nation’s most beloved writers. Their cozy cafe and bar is a fantastic spot to come and grab a bite to eat while enjoying your newest book purchase. There are so many people here writing away on notepads and computer screens. Like you can feel the next big novel being written right in the room! The vibes here are unrivalled, and it is one of the most peaceful places in the city to come and shop.

The Drama Book Shop

As New York City is home to Broadway and one of, if not the BEST, places to see live theatre, visiting the Drama Book Shop feels like a truly New Yorkian outing! Open since 1917, the Drama Book Shop has been a mainstay of the New York theatre scene and a cultural institution for theatrical works. One of my favourite parts of going inside is admiring the decor. They always go all out with the store’s styling, and I’m sure they get some set decorators to help them create these fantastical displays. The most impressive is the “book tornado” that spirals all around the store. Whirling you into a dizzying book-buying frenzy!

Although the shop has been open for over 100 years, it only recently moved to this new location. The new shop was designed by “Hamilton” set designer David Korins. It was created to pay homage to twentieth-century European cafes and reading rooms. So, in addition to all 8,000 playbooks, they also have a full-service cafe! Historic posters from Broadway’s past line the walls. If you are a thespian book lover, you’ll be in heaven. But it’s not just playbooks and musical scores that you’ll find here. There are many books about acting, non-fiction about the famous plays that made Broadway what it is today, and a fantastic collection of biographies from renowned actors and writers. If you ever wanted to know the secrets of the stage, you’ll find them in the books here.
