How to Get to Padua by Train

You can easily visit Padua as a day trip from several major Italian cities. From Venice, it’s especially quick. Direct trains from Venezia Santa Lucia reach Padua in about 25 to 30 minutes. Trains run regularly, and you don’t need to book far in advance. Once you arrive, it’s an easy walk from the train station to the historic centre, with markets, piazzas and sights all within reach.

If you’re starting in Florence, the fastest trains reach Padua in about an hour and 40 minutes. You’ll depart from Firenze Santa Maria Novella and arrive at Padova Centrale with no need to change trains. The ride is smooth and direct, making it another solid option for a winter day trip.

From Milan, the trip takes longer, but it still works well for a day. Fast trains from Milano Centrale reach Padua in just under two hours. Depart early in the morning, and you’ll have plenty of time to explore the city before heading back in the evening. Trains run often, and the route is straightforward.

Winter Travel Tips

If you want to see as much of the city as possible on your day trip to Padua, it’s best to arrive early in the morning. Especially in the winter, when the days are short, you want to see as much of the city as possible before darkness transforms it into a completely different place.

Padua’s winter weather is similar to that of nearby northern cities like Venice and Milan, but it can feel slightly colder due to its location in the Po Valley, where damp air and fog are common. Average highs in winter sit around 7 to 9 °C, with lows often dipping close to freezing. Compared to Florence, which tends to be a bit milder, Padua’s climate has a sharper edge, colder mornings, more frost, and a heavier, misty feel. While it’s not dramatically colder than Venice or Milan, the air often feels more brisk and still, especially in the early hours or after sunset. So be sure to wear layers!

Start Your Day at the Scrovegni Chapel

After grabbing a counter-side espresso, make your way into the city to visit the famed Scrovegni Chapel, while the town awakens and sets the scene for you. Try to book one of the earliest slots, just after opening, and you’ll find that the chapel is much less crowded than later in the day when the day trip bus tours arrive.

The Scrovegni Chapel stands on the edge of the old city, just beside the ruins of an ancient Roman arena. It was commissioned in the early 1300s by Enrico Scrovegni, a wealthy banker who wanted to secure both his legacy and his salvation. He built the chapel beside his family palace, and hired Giotto, already a well-known artist at the time, to decorate the interior with a full cycle of frescoes.

The result is one of the most complete and moving works of early Italian art. Giotto painted the entire space in just over two years. The walls tell the story of the Virgin Mary and the life of Christ, starting from the ancestors of Mary and ending with the Last Judgement on the chapel’s back wall.

Stepping inside, the first thing you notice is the ceiling. It’s painted deep blue, like dusk, and filled with golden stars. The effect is both cosmic and intimate. Along the walls, each panel is framed like a page in a book, leading you through the sequence of events. Giotto’s figures feel grounded and human. Their faces are expressive. They hold real emotion, sorrow, joy, hesitation, and that gives the space a quiet weight.

At Christmas, the Nativity scene becomes one of the most moving parts of the chapel to linger on. Giotto paints it with gentle detail, Mary resting beside the newborn Christ, Joseph close by, angels gathered overhead. Seen in December, it feels especially meaningful. Standing before that panel during the holiday season brings a quiet sense of stillness, like the room itself is holding its breath.

The Christmas Market in Piazza Eremitani

By late morning, the Christmas market in Piazza Eremitani is in full swing. Open from late November into early January, the festive Eremitani Village in Piazza Eremitani is where you’ll find a charming mix of artisan markets, traditional carousels, and seasonal food stalls. The market isn’t huge, and the atmosphere leans more toward local charm than tourist spectacle, but it’s a delightful mix of tradition and community that makes the whole city feel festive without feeling overdone.

Rows of wooden stalls offered handmade scarves, wool hats, silver jewellery, and small leather goods. One stand sold glass ornaments shaped like stars and animals. Another had jars of chestnut honey and dried orange slices. I warmed my hands on a cup of mulled wine and took in the smells of cinnamon, roast nuts and cold pine. They also serve apple punch (both spiked and alcohol-free) which is a unique winter offering I only saw in Padua!

They also had plenty of stalls with hot chocolate since this market was definitely geared towards families. Kids ran all over, laughing as they climbed into a small carousel and excitedly lining up to greet Santa. Santa’s House is open on selected days in December and when he’s away, children can still drop off their letters in the official mailbox inside.

Palazzo della Ragione

Make your way into the city center, towards the Palazzo della Ragione. Built in 1218 and expanded in the 1300s, the Ragione Palace served as the town’s courthouse and market hall, a place where justice and commerce met under one roof. The building is striking for its size and shape. It has a long, rectangular form with an enormous roof that looks almost like the upturned hull of a ship.

The largest of Padua’s holiday markets is the Christmas Fair, which wraps around the Palazzo della Ragione. The building itself sits between Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta, two of the main squares where the fair unfolds. From December 6 to January 6, the fair turns the historic centre into a festive marketplace that runs daily from morning to evening.

The market mixes traditional holiday shopping with local flavour. You’ll find artisanal gifts, decorations, seasonal sweets and regional food and wine, all under a canopy of lights and framed by the stone buildings of Padua’s medieval core. It’s busy but never chaotic, with locals doing holiday errands alongside visitors browsing for souvenirs or festive snacks. On December 25 and January 1, only food and drink vendors are permitted to open, with hours stretching as late as midnight. December 26 is a flexible day for all stalls, running until 10:00 pm.

Inside, the Palazzo della Ragione you’ll discover one of the largest medieval halls in Europe, supported by wooden beams and decorated with a sweeping cycle of frescoes. These images, painted and repainted over the years, reflect medieval ideas about the cosmos, justice, and daily life. Stalls sell local cheese, cured meats, bread, herbs, and more, continuing a tradition that’s been in place for over 800 years.

At Christmas, the entire market is decorated with festival baubles, heaps of ivy and fresh fir wreaths and dazzling twinkle lights that shine above your head. Locals were packed into the marketplace on the days leading up to Christmas, buying up all the freshest ingredients to host Christmas dinners Italian style.

In the market around the Palazzo della Ragione, one of the simplest and most satisfying things you can find is a mortadella sandwich, warm, soft, and deeply local. Head to one of the small panini stalls tucked under the arcades or just beside the main market entrances in Piazza delle Erbe. These vendors serve sandwiches straight from fresh rolls, sliced open and packed with thick cuts of mortadella, sometimes with a smear of mustard or a piece of cheese, but often left plain to let the meat speak for itself. Pair it with a hot drink from a nearby booth, usually either mulled wine, apple punch, or a strong espresso served in a small paper cup. You can eat it standing up, leaning on one of the old stone walls, watching people pass through the winter crowd. It’s not fancy, but it’s one of those small, everyday pleasures that feels perfectly right in the middle of a cold December market in Padua.

Palazzo Moroni Christmas Tree

After lunch and exploring the Christmas Market, you might need to warm up a little bit, so it’s time to head inside and visit the University of Padua. On your way there, stop just outside the Palazzo Moroni, Padua’s historic city hall. Built in the 16th century and expanded over time, it has long been the seat of the city’s municipal government. Architecturally, it’s an elegant building with a mix of Renaissance and later influences, known for its arched windows, classical lines, and stone balconies.

At Christmas, the space just outside the palazzo becomes a focal point for the city’s celebrations. It’s here, along the Liston, that Padua’s enormous Christmas tree is installed each year, creating a festive landmark in one of the most visible and well-loved corners of the historic centre.

University of Padua

Founded in 1222, the University of Padua is more than just an academic institution; it’s a living monument to centuries of science, philosophy, and the pursuit of free thought. From its earliest days, it stood apart for its independence from Church control and its commitment to open inquiry, drawing scholars and students from across Europe. The guided tour leads visitors through the Palazzo del Bo, the university’s historic heart, where generations of thinkers, scientists, and reformers once studied, lectured and debated. Within these walls, groundbreaking ideas took shape, some that would go on to challenge tradition, shift scientific understanding, and reshape European thought.

Walking into the courtyard of the University building, you’ll be struck by the hundreds of coats of arms displayed on the outside (and inside) of the Palazzo del Bo. These serve as a visual record of the university’s long academic legacy. Each one represents a student who served as rector, a leading student official, during their time at the university. The tradition began in the 15th century, and over time, these symbols formed a kind of public archive of Padua’s diverse student body. Many of the coats of arms include place names, showing that students came from across Italy and Europe to study in Padua. In a time when universities were few and travel was difficult, this diversity reflected the university’s reputation as a centre for serious, independent learning.

One of the key highlights is the Aula Magna, the grand lecture hall still used for official ceremonies. The wooden ceiling and wall-mounted coats of arms speak to the university’s deep academic tradition.

Nearby is the Anatomical Theatre, a steep, circular wooden room built in 1595, the oldest surviving one of its kind. It was used for public dissections and stands as a symbol of the university’s early embrace of science and medical study.

You’ll also have a chance to see Galileo’s lecture podium, a quiet but powerful presence in one of the classrooms. Galileo spent nearly twenty years teaching here, and standing in the same space, history feels close and unmistakably authentic.

Lights along Via Roma & Umberto I

Walking down Via Roma and Umberto I at Christmas feels like moving through a ribbon of light and quiet celebration. The street itself is one of Padua’s main shopping avenues, but in December it becomes part of the city’s holiday scene. Strings of warm white lights stretch above the road, framed by the stone buildings and shop fronts, so everything feels gently illuminated rather than bright or overwhelming.

Window displays lean into seasonal touches, simple wreaths, candles, small nativity scenes, and twinkling bulbs, but they stay elegant and understated, like the city itself.

As Via Roma shifts into Umberto I, you will come across the iconic Ponte delle Torricelle. The bridge spans the Bacchiglione River, and from its stone edge, you get a wide view of water, sky and old walls that speak to Padua’s long past. In winter, the river often looks like liquid silver, and it makes for a stunning photo spot. Continue walking along Via Umberto I until you begin to see the narrow street open up into a grand piazza, or Prato della Valle.

Skating Rink Prato della Valle

Prato della Valle is one of the largest public squares in Europe and the most iconic open space in Padua. Originally a swampy area in Roman times, it was transformed into a vast, oval-shaped piazza surrounded by a canal and lined with 78 statues of historical figures in the late 1700s.

At Christmas, Prato della Valle transforms into a festive winter setting, with a large open-air ice rink set just beside the Basilica of Santa Giustina. The “Christmas on Ice” event fills the square with music, lights and a lively energy that adds to the holiday spirit.

The rink includes a heated changing area, with rentals available for skates, helmets and gloves. There’s also a dedicated platform with free access for disabled visitors. Opening hours run from 9:30 am to 9:00 pm on weekdays, and until 11:00 pm on weekends and public holidays. On New Year’s Eve, the rink stays open until 1:00 am. Entry is free, but skate rentals cost 10 euros per day.

Around the edge of the ice rink at Prato della Valle, you’ll find a small cluster of wooden market booths that add to the festive atmosphere. These stalls carry a mix of seasonal snacks and warm drinks you can enjoy between laps on the ice or while watching from the sidelines.

The Christmas Train

The Christmas Train in Padua is one of the city’s most charming seasonal touches, a small, open-sided train that rolls gently through the historic centre, offering an easy and festive way to take in the sights. From late November to early January, it travels along a loop through the city’s main streets and squares, giving riders a relaxed view of Padua dressed in holiday lights.

The train departs and returns to Piazza Cavour, making it a convenient way to get back to the centre after a visit to Prato della Valle, especially after skating or browsing the nearby market booths. It passes some of the city’s key landmarks along the way, moving at a slow pace that lets you take in the decorations, architecture, and everyday street scenes.

The route varies slightly depending on the day.

On weekdays and January 1, it runs from 4:00 to 7:00 pm with a longer route, while weekends and holidays (like December 8, 24, 26, and January 6) offer both morning and afternoon rides. Tickets cost 5 euros for adults and 4 euros for children.

Piazza Duomo

As you make your way back into the city centre, you reach Piazza Duomo just as dusk begins to settle. The light fades, and the city quietly shifts, buildings glow, streets shimmer, and Padua transforms into a fairground of light, subtle and dazzling all at once. Starting December 5, the city’s central piazzas take it a step further. Piazza delle Erbe, Piazza dei Frutti, Piazza dei Signori, and Piazza Duomo become a full-scale light show.

From 5:00 pm each evening, soft, immersive projections cast across the stone, not just lighting the buildings but transforming them. Columns, arches, and cornices are picked out in gold, while waves of colour move slowly across the surfaces like shifting sky. In 2024, the designs were drawn from night skies and cosmic imagery, reimagining Padua’s medieval architecture as part of a star-filled landscape.

Battistero di San Giovanni

If you still have time before the day winds down, it’s well worth stepping inside the Battistero di San Giovanni, right next to the Duomo. From the outside, it’s a quiet, round Romanesque structure, easy to pass without much notice. But inside, it holds one of Padua’s most remarkable treasures.

Inside, the fresco cycle by Giusto de’ Menabuoi is nothing short of extraordinary. Commissioned by Fina Buzzaccarini, the wife of Francesco da Carrara (Padua’s ruling lord at the time), the paintings reflect both religious devotion and civic pride. Giusto’s work filled every inch of wall and ceiling with narrative, theology, and celestial symbolism. It was designed to impress, to educate, and to awe, and even centuries later, it still does.

The dome, with its radiant image of Christ in a star-filled heaven, is one of the most important visual representations of paradise from the period. Around it, the frescoes follow an elaborate programme that weaves together the lives of Christ, the Virgin Mary, John the Baptist, and key biblical events, told in scenes that are richly detailed but surprisingly clear and accessible.

Visiting during the Christmas season adds depth to the experience. The frescoes don’t just illustrate the birth of Christ; they invite you to stand quietly in front of them, surrounded by colour, light, and layered meaning. The Nativity scene in particular, rendered with warmth and humanity, takes on added resonance in December.

As you make your way back to the train station, don’t rush. Take the long route and wander once more through the Christmas markets, now glowing under a canopy of twinkling lights. The stalls feel different in the evening, warmer, livelier, and touched by something softer. It’s a quiet, final chance to soak in the mood before heading home.

Padua was one of my favourite cities in Italy to visit at Christmas. There are no big crowds or over-the-top displays, just quiet beauty. Old streets, good food, soft lights, and everyday life all moving at their own pace. For a day trip, it offers enough to feel full, but never hurried. And around Christmas, that kind of balance is hard to find.

Over time, it became known as panettone. Originally a luxury treat, it was made with rich ingredients like butter and eggs and shared among families at Christmas. Now a holiday staple, panettone is enjoyed with coffee, wine, or transformed into desserts like affogato.

For a traditional Italian festive treat, head to Leonardo Forno Biscottificio, known for its light, fragrant panettone in flavours like almond, apricot, and three-chocolate. Last year, they released a special Panettone della Gherardesca, created in collaboration with Chef Paolo Lavezzini and Pastry Chef Mariano Dileo. Inspired by the frescoed ceiling of the newly restored Palazzo Del Nero, the star-covered box is as beautiful as the panettone inside. Things to Know Before You Go

If you’re visiting Florence in December, the lighting displays typically switch on around December 7th and linger until January 7th. The sweet spot to wander the city looking at the lights is just after dusk, roughly 5:30 pm, when the sky still clings to its last sliver of blue, and the lights take on an almost surreal glow.

To ensure your night isn’t cut short but the chill gets into your bones, be sure to wear lots of layers. Even though when the sun is up, it might feel comfortable, as soon as the sun sets, the cold and damp can really set in. Hot chocolate is your best ally!

Via de’ Tornabuoni

We start our tour on the Via de’ Tornabuoni, leading toward Piazza Santa Trinita, which is a sparkling corridor of festive refinement. Lining the street, elegant rows of Christmas trees stand like sentinels of holiday cheer, each one perfectly manicured and wrapped in delicate white lights. Their soft glow bounces off the shopfront windows and the polished stone façades, creating a golden path that naturally draws you toward the square.

Via Porta Rossa

At the end of the Piazza di Santa Trinita, turn east along Via Porta Rossa. Via Porta Rossa is home to one of Florence’s most dazzling Christmas light displays. This long stretch or medival facades is draped with golden string lights that loop between the buildings in graceful arcs, the street becomes a glowing tunnel of warmth and wonder. Piazza della Repubblica

One of the most iconic spots to see at Christmas in Florence is the Piazza del Duomo. The cathedral’s square already has a flair for the dramatic, but add a towering Christmas tree, a nativity scene, and ambient lighting that highlights every gothic groove in its marble skin, and you’ve got yourself a holiday postcard waiting to happen.

Even during the daytime, this square is a delight to visit, as you can really appreciate the details set in the nativity scene outside the Duomo. And don’t skip the side alleys fanning out from the piazza; those quiet corners are laced with charming Christmas lights that frame the square perfectly.

Borgo San Lorenzo

Just around the corner from the Duomo, Borgo San Lorenzo feels like stumbling onto Florence’s secret holiday runway. Follow this street all the way to Lungarno Generale Diaz, then turn west and stroll along the river for a short stretch until you reach Piazzale degli Uffizi. From there, head into the piazza and continue straight ahead, the path will lead you right into the magnificent Piazza della Signoria.

Piazza della Signoria

The Piazza della Signoria is Florence’s political and artistic heart, a veritable open-air museum wrapped in centuries of power plays and pageantry. At the entrance to Palazzo Vecchio stands another replica of Michelangelo’s David, still keeping watch over the crowds below. But come nightfall during the holidays, this Renaissance icon gets a modern makeover, bathed in colour and light, transformed into a glowing spectacle that bridges centuries of Florentine artistry.

Each year, it becomes the centrepiece of Florence’s ‘Light Up’ festival, where the city’s most iconic landmarks become a luminous canvas thanks to video-mapping technology. This offers up a completely unique way of seeing this historic site. Even if you’ve wandered Florence a dozen times before, the holiday projections cast the city’s landmarks in an entirely new glow, quite literally letting you see them in a different light.

The exterior of the Ponte Vecchi is transfomed by a kaleidoscope of video projections and storybook scenes mapped directly onto the bridge’s historic facade. Arrive just after dusk for the last blue in the sky, then circle back later when the colours deepen. If you can, view it from both banks, each side offers its own kind of magic. From the Uffizi side, you’ll catch the full sweep of the Ponte Vecchio’s arches flickering with colour, their reflections rippling in the Arno like molten gold. Cross over to the Oltrarno, and the perspective shifts: the bridge glows against the backdrop of the city skyline, with the Duomo’s dome and Palazzo Vecchio’s tower silhouetted in the distance.

But the delights don’t stop at the bridge’s outer glow. Strolling along Ponte Vecchio itself, you’ll walk beneath elegant chandeliers and draped string lights that shimmer above the crowds, a festive overlay to a structure that has spanned the Arno since the 14th century, once lined with butchers’ stalls before becoming the glittering haven of goldsmiths it is today.

Florence’s beloved Ice Village is back in 2025, and this time, it’s taken over the grounds of the Fortezza da Basso. Running until January 26, 2025, this winter wonderland is home to Tuscany’s largest ice-skating rink, a soaring 55-metre panoramic Ferris wheel. But beyond the ice, you’ll find a vibrant village atmosphere with various little food stalls serving everything from hot chocolate to street food classics. If you’re visiting Florence in December, the lighting displays typically switch on around December 7th and linger until January 7th. The sweet spot to wander the city looking at the lights is just after dusk, roughly 5:30 pm, when the sky still clings to its last sliver of blue, and the lights take on an almost surreal glow.

To ensure your night isn’t cut short but the chill gets into your bones, be sure to wear lots of layers. Even though when the sun is up, it might feel comfortable, as soon as the sun sets, the cold and damp can really set in. Hot chocolate is your best ally!

Piazza del Duomo

One of the most iconic spots to see at Christmas in Florence is the Piazza del Duomo. The cathedral’s square already has a flair for the dramatic, but add a towering Christmas tree, a nativity scene, and ambient lighting that highlights every gothic groove in its marble skin, and you’ve got yourself a holiday postcard waiting to happen.

Even during the daytime, this square is a delight to visit, as you can really appreciate the details set in the nativity scene outside the Duomo. And don’t skip the side alleys fanning out from the piazza; those quiet corners are laced with charming Christmas lights that frame the square perfectly.

Piazza Santa Croce

Piazza Santa Croce is Florence’s big open living room, anchored by the basilica’s marble façade and framed by gorgeous palazzi. This square does double duty in December: it’s both a stage for Florence’s German-style Christmas market and a canvas for charming holiday lights. Walking through the market, with a hot mulled wine and a freshly roasted bag of chestnuts, really makes this wander absolutely filled with Christmas cheer.

Come here just after dark, and you can bask in the lights strung between the booths, which cast a warm, golden hue on the basilica’s façade, and you’ll feel like you’ve wandered into a snow globe, minus the snow, of course.

Ponte Vecchio

Come December, the Ponte Vecchio trades its everyday golden-hour glamour for something even more theatrical. Each year, it becomes the centrepiece of Florence’s ‘Light Up’ festival, where the city’s most iconic landmarks become a luminous canvas thanks to video-mapping technology. This offers up a completely unique way of seeing this historic site. Even if you’ve wandered Florence a dozen times before, the holiday projections cast the city’s landmarks in an entirely new glow, quite literally letting you see them in a different light.

The exterior of the Ponte Vecchi is transfomed by a kaleidoscope of video projections and storybook scenes mapped directly onto the bridge’s historic facade. Arrive just after dusk for the last blue in the sky, then circle back later when the colours deepen. If you can, view it from both banks, each side offers its own kind of magic. From the Uffizi side, you’ll catch the full sweep of the Ponte Vecchio’s arches flickering with colour, their reflections rippling in the Arno like molten gold. Cross over to the Oltrarno, and the perspective shifts: the bridge glows against the backdrop of the city skyline, with the Duomo’s dome and Palazzo Vecchio’s tower silhouetted in the distance.

But the delights don’t stop at the bridge’s outer glow. Strolling along Ponte Vecchio itself, you’ll walk beneath elegant chandeliers and draped string lights that shimmer above the crowds, a festive overlay to a structure that has spanned the Arno since the 14th century, once lined with butchers’ stalls before becoming the glittering haven of goldsmiths it is today.

Via de’ Tornabuoni

Leading toward Piazza Santa Trinita, Via de’ Tornabuoni becomes a sparkling corridor of festive refinement. Lining the street, elegant rows of Christmas trees stand like sentinels of holiday cheer, each one perfectly manicured and wrapped in delicate white lights. Their soft glow bounces off the shopfront windows and the polished stone façades, creating a golden path that naturally draws you toward the square.

Piazzale Michelangelo

Above the city sits Piazzale Michelangelo, named for the great Renaissance master himself, and his copy of the famed David statue, which stands proudly at the centre of the terrace, gazing out over the skyline of domes, towers, and terracotta rooftops that define Florence’s timeless beauty.

The climb up to this lookout is well worth the effort as from here, the city’s lights don’t just twinkle, they pulse gently across the Arno, glinting off tiled roofs, towers, and domes. And sitting atop the city is a great Christmas tree, all decked out with thousands of lights and oversized Christmas baubles.

Piazza della Repubblica

The Piazza della Repubblica is a grand, open square carved out of what was once the city’s old medieval marketplace. Its wide arcades frame elegant cafés, where guests and locals linger over espresso and where buskers play under the glow of the streetlamps.

Come December, the square is anchored by a towering Christmas tree dressed in shimmering ornaments, twinkling garlands. Projections are cast all over the buildings surrounding the square, wrapping the entire area up in a glittering illuminated like bow! But the real showstopper? The vintage carousel twirls around, dressed for the holidays with gilded horses set amongst twinkling lights and brightly decorated Christmas tree, all set to a cheerful soundtrack of festive music.

Piazza della Signoria

The Piazza della Signoria is Florence’s political and artistic heart, a veritable open-air museum wrapped in centuries of power plays and pageantry. At the entrance to Palazzo Vecchio stands another replica of Michelangelo’s David, still keeping watch over the crowds below. But come nightfall during the holidays, this Renaissance icon gets a modern makeover, bathed in colour and light, transformed into a glowing spectacle that bridges centuries of Florentine artistry.

The entire facade of the Palacio Vecchio glows under colourful projections from the Light up Florence Festival, bathing the façades in rich colours, animated patterns, and storybook scenes that bring the past to life.

Borgo San Lorenzo

Just around the corner from the Duomo, Borgo San Lorenzo feels like stumbling onto Florence’s secret holiday runway. Golden string lights arc overhead in perfect, glowing swoops, wrapping the street in a soft, honeyed light. Walking through feels a bit like ducking into a twinkling tunnel of warmth, flanked by tiny boutiques, espresso bars, and the easy rhythm of everyday Florentine life carrying on beneath the sparkle.

Loggia del Mercato Nuovo

Under the grand stone arches of the Loggia del Mercato Nuovo, the 16th-century market, giant red-and-white fleur-de-lis lights, Florence’s proud emblem, hang from the vaulted ceilings, glowing like stained glass against the cool grey stone. Reflections shimmer on the wet cobblestones, and the statues tucked into the corners stand watch cheerful shoppers pass by.

Via Camillo Cavour

Via Camillo Cavour, home to such historic buildings such as the Medici Riccardi Palace and Magi Chapel Riccardi, is home to warm white stars that sweep overhead, casting a golden hush over stone façades and shuttered windows. The street is also home to orange trees that come into fruit in December, and the lights reflecting off the brightly coloured oranges make them gleam like tiny ornaments, adding a touch of natural magic to the festive scene.

Via de’ Guicciardini

Connecting the Ponte Vecchio to the grand facade of Palazzo Pitti, Via de’ Guicciardini is a lively artery that doesn’t slack on the seasonal charm. During the holidays, this well-trodden street is strung with festive lights that stretch overhead in elegant arcs, guiding you from one Florentine landmark to another with a bit of extra sparkle. Shops and gelaterias along the street show off their festive best, their windows glowing with twinkling lights, ribbons, and seasonal displays.

Piazza di Santa Maria Novella

Just a short stroll from the main station, Piazza di Santa Maria Novella transforms into a tranquil holiday tableau come December. With the church’s iconic marble facade as a majestic backdrop, the square is dominated by a stately Christmas tree, wrapped in bright red ribbons.

The square also hosts one of the city’s best holiday markets, where rows of chalet-style wooden stalls are draped in garlands, twinkling lights, and glowing stars that bathe the entire piazza in a warm festive glow.

Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella

Stepping through the grand wooden doors of Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, you enter a world that emanates Christmas through scent and splendour. This 13th-century apothecary goes all out for Christmas, and their entry is incredible, decorated with a thick canopy of garlands wrapped in dazzling twinkle lights.

Inside, shelves of glass bottles gleam like jewels against the dark wood cabinetry, reflecting the warm glow of the seasonal decor.

Via dei Benci

Via dei Benci is a narrow, historic street which, thanks to its proximity to the Santa Croce Market, is draped in long strands of icicle lights cascading across the roadway, like golden raindrops suspended in mid-air. Against the backdrop of weathered stone facades and shuttered windows, the effect is understated but utterly enchanting!

Piazza Ognissanti

Tucked along the Arno on the west side of the historic centre, Piazza Ognissanti features strings of warm bulbs tracing the façades, window wreaths flickering in hotel lobbies, and a simple yet surprisingly eye-catching Christmas tree that greets visitors to the Church of Ognissanti.

Borgo San Frediano

Cross the river and head into the Oltrarno (Florence’s cool, creative quarter), and you’ll find Borgo San Frediano. Strings of golden bulbs crisscross the narrow street, looping between artisan studios, hip bars, and timeworn façades splashed with years of stories.

Is Venice worth visiting at Christmas?

Absolutely, yes, it’s worth it. Before I went myself, I struggled to find many first-hand accounts of what Venice is like at Christmas. And since it doesn’t have the big-ticket Christmas markets or flashy events you’d find in larger cities, I was a bit hesitant. I wondered if it might feel too quiet, too shut down, maybe not worth the trip. But I was so pleasantly surprised. December in Venice offers a rare chance to see the city at a quieter, more intimate pace. The festive lights are tasteful and twinkling, and not overdone. The usual tourist bustle softens, replaced by the rhythm of local life. Christmas concerts echo through centuries-old churches, and cozy cafés become havens from the chill. Wine flows freely, and even the grumpiest locals seem to warm up, offering a cheerful “Buon Natale” as you pass by.

Why Spend Christmas in Venice?

Christmas in Venice isn’t about spectacle, it’s about atmosphere. Imagine wandering fog-shrouded alleys under strings of glowing lights, stepping into a candlelit church as a choir begins to sing, or sipping mulled wine on a quiet campo.

Venice in December feels like stepping back in time. Even during busier seasons, if you can look past the crowds, the city has a timeless quality, as if it’s been quietly drifting through history, unchanged. But when the crowds are quiet, this eternal quality is brought right to the front. If you’re after reflective beauty, history, and the warmth of local traditions, Venice offers a Christmas experience unlike any other. Venice is the perfect place to spend the holidays if you’re hoping to escape the over-commercialism and over-the-top festivities of other cities. I found a kind of peace here I’ve never experienced anywhere else at Christmastime. And you can experience different holiday events that are unique to this special time of year.

What is the weather like in Venice in December?

Expect a damp chill, with average temperatures between 0–8°C. Snow is rare but possible. More often, you’ll get morning fog over the canals, which only adds to the city’s dreamlike feel. Dress for damp: waterproof boots, a warm coat, and plenty of layers are a must. Bring gloves and a hat, especially for evenings. Consider bringing extra socks and a portable umbrella.

Will there be acqua alta (flooding)?

Acqua alta literally means “high water” which is a seasonal phenomenon in Venice when unusually high tides cause parts of the city, especially low-lying areas like St. Mark’s Square, to flood. It usually happens in autumn and winter, triggered by a combination of high tides, low atmospheric pressure, and strong winds pushing water into the lagoon. So visiting in December does mean you have a good chance of experiencing an acqua alta. But don’t let the sound of that worry you! The city is well prepared for this to happen, and raised walkways are installed when needed. You can also get yourself some waterproof boot covers to wear over your shoes to give yourself some extra protection. You can track forecasts online. Most of the time, it’s a mild inconvenience rather than a trip-ruiner. And honestly, if you were to experience such a unique phenomenon, count yourself lucky as you get to experience a natural part of living in Venice!

If you’re staying overnight (in Venice proper, the islands, or even in Mestre), you’ll pay a small tourist tax added to your hotel or Airbnb bill. It’s usually a few euros per night, depending on where you’re staying and the type of accommodation. You won’t pay it for more than five nights, and kids often get a discount or are exempt. Nothing to stress about, your host will sort it all out and include it in your final bill.

Now, if you’re just coming for the day, Venice has recently introduced a new “access fee” for day-trippers on certain busy dates. But the good news? Christmas isn’t one of them. That fee usually kicks in during spring and summer, when the city sees peak crowds. So if you’re visiting during the festive season, all you need to worry about is the usual overnight tax, and you can skip the access fee entirely. Just one more reason why Christmas might be the perfect time to visit.

Are there Christmas Markets in Venice?

There’s a lot of misinformation floating around about Christmas markets in Venice. While planning my own festive trip, I kept coming across mentions of the Campo Santo Stefano Christmas Market on nearly every blog about Italian Christmas events. But when I checked the official City of Venice events website, I couldn’t find any reliable details about it. And sure enough, when I arrived, I discovered it was closed and, in fact, hasn’t operated in several years.

Thankfully, I was still able to track down the real Christmas markets that are open in Venice during the holiday season. Most of the Venetian Island Christmas Markets take place during the first few weekends of December. So if visiting a traditional Christmas market on the islands is high on your list of things to do in Venice at Christmas, plan your trip early in the month.

There are also several pop-up or one-off Christmas markets that open on select weekends in December. However, if you’re looking to guarantee a festive market experience, your best bet is to hop on a train to Mestre, just ten minutes away. As part of the greater Venice metropolitan area, Mestre hosts one of the region’s main Christmas markets, which runs all month long.

If you’re craving a bigger Christmas market experience, hop on a quick 25-minute train to Padua. There, you’ll be welcomed by a classic festive vibe, glowing market stalls, steaming mulled wine, handcrafted gifts, and a cheerful holiday energy, all set in one of Italy’s most beautiful and historic university cities.

What is there to see and do in Venice at Christmas?

Some of the most memorable moments in Venice come from the simplest pleasures, wandering without a plan, following the scent of something delicious, and letting the city guide you. Venice at Christmas rewards those who embrace its quiet, understated magic. Still, it would be a shame not to share the many unique and festive experiences waiting to be discovered throughout the city during the holiday season.

• Watch the Santa Claus Regatta: One of Venice’s quirkiest traditions, this festive boat parade features dozens of rowers dressed as Santa gliding down the Grand Canal, it’s joyful, bizarre, and very Venetian.
• Corsa dei Babbi Natale: Join the Santa Claus Race on December 8, as you watch Venice fill with red as hundreds of Santas jog, stroll, and dash through the city streets and canals. This cheerful 5km route winds around Venice, starting in the Campo Santa Margherita.
• Walk beneath the Christmas lights: Venice’s festive glow is subtle and elegant, with lights strung along narrow alleys, bridges, and canals. Take an evening stroll through Dorsoduro or Cannaregio and feel like you’re walking through a dream.
• Attend a Christmas concert: Whether in an ornate theatre or a centuries-old church, Venice is full of seasonal music events.
• Ride a gondola on Christmas morning: It’s quieter than you can imagine, and the experience feels utterly timeless.
• See the giant glass chandeliers in Campo Santo Stefano, part art installation, part festive flair.
• Browse markets: While Christmas-specific markets may be closed in late December, daily local markets are still lively with seasonal produce and treats.
• Go shopping for unique gifts: Venice has no shortage of beautiful independent shops, ceramics, handmade paper, books, jewellery, that go well beyond the usual tourist trinkets.
• Try Christmas pastries: Enjoy seasonal sweets like panettone or frittelle with a strong espresso or creamy hot chocolate.
• Escape to a quiet museum: Many museums remain open and blissfully uncrowded.
• Catch the early sunset with cicchetti: Golden hour arrives early in winter, pair it with a glass of wine and Venetian bar snacks.
• Sample winter seafood: Cold waters mean fresh, flavourful catches. Try the seasonal fish dishes at local osterie.
• Warm up in a cozy café or wine bar: Seek out snug corners with a view and linger over your drink.
• Admire nativity scenes: Many churches and even shop windows create beautiful presepi (nativity displays).
• Experience Christmas in St. Mark’s Square: Even if you don’t go to Mass, simply standing in the square on Christmas Eve or morning is a moment to remember.
• Visit the skating rink: Campo San Polo sometimes hosts a seasonal ice rink, a fun activity if you’re travelling with kids or just feel like gliding through Venetian winter.

Can you ride a Gondola in winter?

Yes! Gondola rides are available year-round. In winter, gondoliers may offer blankets, and the canals are less crowded. It can be a chilly ride, but also a deeply romantic one, especially in the misty early evening light. Just dress warmly. We actually took our gondola ride on Christmas morning! It was an unforgettable experience; they even sang as we glided through the silent canals. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Are museums and tours running in December?

All the museums in Venice are open in December; however, during the winter, they generally run on reduced hours. Despite the shorter window to enter, you’ll be rewarded with shorter lines, smaller crowds and sometimes even empty galleries!

In 2024, all the Musei Civici of Venice remained open to the public from Monday, December 23rd to Monday, January 6th. And the Doge’s Palace and Museo Correr offered special evening programming from December 20th to January 4th, staying open until 21:00 (with last entry at 20:00) every Friday and Saturday night. And on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, both the Doge’s Palace and the Natural History Museum will open their doors at 10:00 am.

What is Open in Venice on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day?

On Christmas Eve, many shops, galleries, museums, and restaurants do close early, but we found that most places were still open, albeit on a reduced schedule. It’s crucial to make reservations during this time to ensure you don’t miss out on anything.

Museums & Galleries

On Christmas Day, most private museums and attractions, like the Gallerie dell’Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (Closed December 23rd to the 25th), are closed. However, in 2024, Venice’s Civic Museums announced extended holiday hours! This means that they remained open to the public from Monday, December 23rd, to Monday, January 6th. This means you can spend Christmas Day exploring the Doge’s Palace, the Museo Correr, the Natural History Museum, or even wander through the galleries of Ca’ Pesaro. Having spent Christmas in cities around the world, I can say this is a rare treat; most places completely shut down for the holidays, but Venice keeps a gentle pulse of life going.

Churches

In addition to the museums, many of Venice’s historic churches, including Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, Santa Maria della Salute, and Chiesa di Madonna dell’Orto, remain open and host beautiful Christmas services. While these are not times for quiet sightseeing or snapping photos in an empty nave, visitors are warmly welcome to attend the festive Masses and join the joyful locals celebrating. St. Mark’s Basilica is also open for Christmas Masses and offers a truly breathtaking setting for a holiday service. We attended the Christmas Eve service, and it was one of the most awe-inspiring evenings of our trip, sitting inside a building nearly as old as the city itself, gazing up at the shimmering gold mosaics as Christmas blessings echoed through the domed basilica.

Restaurants

From Christmas Eve until December 26th, many restaurants remain open, especially those associated with hotels. Even if you’re not staying inside these luxury hotels, you can still book a reservation for one of their special Christmas menus.​ It’s essential to book in advance to secure a spot.

Surprisingly, we found that December 26, known in Canada as Boxing Day but celebrated in Italy as St. Stephen’s Feast Day, came with more closures than we anticipated. Since many restaurants stayed open for Christmas Eve and Day, they instead chose St. Stephen’s Day as their main holiday break, closing up shop for some well-earned rest.

Public Transporation

Vaporettos (Venice’s public water buses) do operate over the holidays, but on a reduced schedule on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. If you’re planning to use them, it’s a good idea to double-check the timetables in advance, as some routes may run less frequently or skip certain stops. Water taxis are available year-round, with many private services offering 24/7 operation. That said, it’s wise to book ahead during the holidays, as demand can be higher. But since Venice is such a walkable city, the reduced vaporetto schedule won’t slow you down too much.

Visiting the Islands

Since the Vaporettos are still running, albeit on a reduced schedule, visiting Murano or Burano on Christmas Day can be a wonderful way to spend the holiday, especially if you’re looking for a quiet, scenic escape from the main city. The islands tend to be much less crowded this time of year, and the slower pace adds to the peaceful, almost storybook atmosphere.

Murano, known for its centuries-old glassblowing tradition, offers a more local, lived-in feel during winter. You might catch glimpses of artisans at work or simply enjoy wandering its calm canals and bridges without the usual bustle. Burano, with its brightly coloured houses and sleepy lagoon views, feels like stepping into a painting. On a crisp December day, the contrast of vivid buildings against a soft winter sky is truly magical.

Skating Rinks

If you’re looking to do some skating on Christmas, the Campo San Polo Skating Rink is generally open on December 24th from 11 am to 5 pm, and December 25th from 11 am to 8 pm. In Venice, the skating rinks set up during the Christmas season aren’t made of real ice, as winter temperatures rarely drop low enough to keep the ice frozen. Instead, they use high-quality synthetic ice panels that mimic the smooth glide of real ice while being eco-friendly. If you’re only used to skating on real ice, this can take some getting used to, but it’s still a fun experience if you’ve never been on one before. This location offers skate rentals, because, let’s be honest, it’s unlikely you managed to squeeze a pair of skates into your suitcase.

Venice Movie Theatre

One of our favourite Christmas Day traditions while travelling is catching a movie at the local cinema. In many cities, almost everything shuts down for the holiday, and the theatre often becomes one of the few places still open. If you’re lucky enough to find a festive film playing, it’s a wonderfully cozy and relaxing way to spend part of the day, especially after a morning of exploring or a big Christmas lunch. Plus, they are super comfortable on those cold or rainy days. The biggest movie theatre with the best chance of an English-language film in Venice is the Multisala Rossini. Although the cinema was closed on Christmas Eve, it reopened on Christmas Day with showings of Conclave, a film set in Italy, which made it an especially fitting and enjoyable choice for the occasion. Libreria Acqua Alta at Christmas

If you’re spending Christmas in Venice, one spot that’s well worth a visit, especially for book lovers, is the Libreria Acqua Alta. This whimsical, one-of-a-kind bookshop stays open even through the holidays, offering a cozy escape from the winter chill.

On December 24, the shop welcomes visitors from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and on Christmas Day, it opens again from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM. It’s the perfect place for a quiet wander among overflowing stacks of books, gondola-shaped shelves, and resident cats. Whether you’re picking up a Venetian souvenir or simply soaking in the atmosphere, visiting Libreria Acqua Alta at Christmas feels like stepping into a storybook come to life.

Are there Special Christmas Concerts?

Yes, many! Churches throughout Venice host concerts featuring sacred music, especially in the weeks before Christmas. Check posters or ask locals for upcoming events, or go to Venice’s Official Event Website for the most up-to-date information.

What to Eat and Drink in Venice at Christmas?

In Venice, Christmas brings a delicious mix of traditional Venetian flavours and classic Italian holiday favourites. On Christmas Eve, many locals follow the custom of avoiding meat, so you’ll often find dishes like bigoli in salsa (thick pasta in a savoury anchovy and onion sauce) or baccalà mantecato, a creamy whipped salt cod spread served on toasted bread or polenta.

Seafood plays a starring role in festive meals, with options like risotto de gò, made with goby fish from the lagoon. In winter, you may also find moeche, small soft-shell lagoon crabs, which are considered a delicacy when in season. While their prime season is typically in spring and autumn, some fishermen still catch them in early winter, and if you’re lucky, you might spot them on a traditional holiday menu. On Christmas Day, the table usually shifts to heartier fare such as roast lamb, pork loin, or stuffed guinea fowl, often served with winter vegetables and creamy polenta.

For dessert, the holidays wouldn’t be complete without panettone and pandoro, sweet, fluffy cakes that fill every bakery window. Torrone, a chewy nougat with nuts, is another festive favourite, often wrapped up as a gift. To warm up, sip on vin brulé (mulled wine) or a thick, velvety cioccolata calda. And of course, a glass of local Prosecco is the perfect way to toast the season, Venetian style.

Visiting Venice at Christmas is an experience like no other. The city slows down, the crowds thin, and its timeless beauty feels even more enchanting under soft winter light. From festive markets and concerts to quiet walks along misty canals, every moment feels steeped in warmth and wonder. Whether you’re sipping hot chocolate by the Grand Canal, listening to carols in a centuries-old church, or watching Santas row past in the regatta, Christmas in Venice is about simple joys and heartfelt connections. It’s a reminder that the magic of the season doesn’t come from grandeur, but from the quiet glow of a city that has always felt a little bit like a dream.

Each one offers a glimpse into Venetian craftsmanship, from Murano glass ornaments to handmade lace and seasonal treats. • Campo San Maurizio Antiques Christmas Market (Dec 6–8) – A long-running Venetian tradition featuring around 60 antique dealers from Italy and beyond, selling vintage books, prints, and rare collectibles in one of Venice’s most charming squares. Open daily from 9 AM to 7 PM.
• Christmas Market of Venetian Ceramists (Dec 20–22) – Held at the Bochaleri Association in Castello, this market and exhibition celebrates Venice’s ceramic traditions with live demonstrations, artist talks, and beautiful handmade ceramics for sale. Open daily from 10 AM to 7 PM.

Regata dei Babbi Natale Santa Claus Regatta

Every December, Venice’s Regata dei Babbi Natale (Santa Claus Regatta) transforms the Grand Canal into a whimsical parade of Santas rowing traditional Venetian boats decorated with festive flair. The event, which began in the early 2010s, was created by local rowing clubs to celebrate both Venice’s ancient rowing heritage and the joy of the holiday season. Dozens of rowers dressed as Santa glide through the city’s waterways from Punta della Dogana to the Rialto Bridge, where the festivities culminate with music, awards, and lively celebrations along the docks.

The best viewing spots include the Rialto Bridge, Fondamenta della Salute, and stretches of the Grand Canal between Accademia and Ca’ Rezzonico. Lido Christmas Village

On the first weekend in December, the Lido di Venezia (Lido Island), Venice’s elegant barrier island separating the lagoon from the Adriatic Sea, known for its long sandy beaches and Belle Époque villas, turns festive for the annual Christmas Island celebration. You can reach Lido Island easily by taking a vaporetto from Line 1 or Line 5.1 from Piazzale Roma or St. Mark’s Square, which takes about 20–25 minutes.

A lively holiday event fills the island with markets that stretch between Gran Viale Santa Maria Elisabetta and Piazzale Ravà. Along with the market, you can catch Christmas concerts, parties, and even a charming little train that winds its way through the island.

Christmas Concerts

Big Vocal Orchestra!

One of our favourite memories of our time in Venice at Christmas was attending a performance by the Big Vocal Orchestra. This extraordinary ensemble, made up of nearly 200 voices, hosts a Christmas concert, “A Million Dreams,” held at the historic Teatro Goldoni. Teatro Goldoni in Venice was inaugurated in 1622, making it over 400 years old and seeing a performance here feels like getting a chance to step into history.

Directed by Marco Toso Borella, the show blends cinematic soundtracks, pop hits, gospel, spirituals, and classical pieces into a vibrant, immersive journey. I definitely cried more than once watching this show, both out of sheer wonder and awe, but also out of the immense Christmas spirit I felt all around me.

Every year, the Big Vocal Orchestra also performs two outdoor concerts to celebrate the festive season. In 2024, the Big Vocal Orchestra performed two free concerts on Friday, December 27th, in Piazza Ferretto at 6:00 PM in Mestre, while the second will be held on Sunday, December 29th, in Piazza San Marco, also at 6:00 PM. This gives you an idea of when to expect their free concert in future, but always keep on top of their dates online.

Avvento in Musica Festival

The Avvento in Musica concert series is a series of four concerts held in December in the atmospheric Chiesa di San Trovaso. As part of the Callido Nacchini Festival and the city’s Le Città in Festa program, the series celebrates sacred music and the historic 1765 Gaetano Callido organ. Each Sunday concert features a unique programme, music from the Italian Baroque, pastoral melodies, Corelli’s Christmas Concerto and Vivaldi’s Winter.

Christmas Concert by the Pueri Cantores del Veneto

On Christmas Eve, the Pueri Cantores del Veneto choir is one of the most charming and heart-warming festive events held in the Piazza Ferretto. Their concert, “Musicamor,” is free for all to attend and invites audiences to rediscover the true spirit of Christmas through a mix of traditional and contemporary choral works. The programme includes compositions by Jim Papoulis, Rolf Lovland, Gabriel Fauré, Irving Berlin, J.S. Bach, and even modern composers like A.R. Rahman and Ethan Sperry. Making it the perfect way to spend Christmas Eve in Mestre.

Vivaldi at San Vidal Church

Throughout December, the Interpreti Veneziani perform Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons at San Vidal Church, up to and including Christmas Day. Though not a traditional Christmas concert, the brilliance of Vivaldi’s music, performed in his own city, captures the season’s spirit of renewal and wonder. The energy of Spring, the warmth of Summer, and the crystalline notes of Winter echo the rhythms of life, light, and reflection that define the holidays. Surrounded by the candlelit beauty of San Vidal, the concert feels both festive and timeless, a gift of Venetian music at its finest.

Skating Rinks

In Venice, there are two skating rinks where you can enjoy some Christmas music and glide across the ice surrounded by twinkling lights, festive decorations, and the joyful buzz of the holiday season. On the Island, the San Polo skating rink is open in the Campo San Polo from the end of November until the last day of Carnival in March. In Venice, the skating rinks set up during the Christmas season aren’t made of real ice, as winter temperatures rarely drop low enough to keep the ice frozen. Instead, they use high-quality synthetic ice panels that mimic the smooth glide of real ice while being eco-friendly. If you’re only used to skating on real ice, this can take some getting used to, but it’s still a fun experience if you’ve never been on one before.

The other skating rink is located on the mainland in Mestre, and is open every day in the Piazza Mercato from mid-November until early January. Both locations offer skate rentals, because, let’s be honest, it’s unlikely you managed to squeeze a pair of skates into your suitcase.

Christmas Apertifs

For the past three years, the Società San Giacomo Benefica, a long-standing Venetian charity dedicated to supporting local families and individuals in need, has organized Christmas Aperitifs, held from December 20th to 23rd, between 6 pm and 9 pm in Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio. During the event, volunteers serve hearty local favourites such as pasta, musetto and meatballs. As a tourist, please refrain from eating the food since it’s meant for families in need. Instead, you can join in on the celebration by making a donation and enjoying the live Christmas concerts throughout the evening. Everything from Jazz to traditional festive music, this is such a heartwarming event to see the real community spirit still alive in Venice.

Santa Claus Race

If you are lucky enough to find yourself in Venice during the Annual Santa Claus Race, count yourself as very lucky. Every year, locals (and visitors alike) lace up their running shoes and don a Santa hat for a cheerful 5km run that winds through Venice. Entry costs €10 for adults ( children under 12 participate for free), and if you register in advance, you’ll get a free Santa outfit, refreshments, and a small gift at the finish line. Proceeds will go to AVAPO Venezia Onlus, supporting local charitable work. Spots are limited, so be sure to register online as early as you can. If you don’t want to take part in the run, just watching the runners is such an enjoyable thing to see, as hundreds of Santas take to the streets of Venice!

Natale di Vetro – Christmas in Glass in Murano

Every December, the island of Murano, renowned worldwide for its exquisite Venetian glass, celebrates Natale di Vetro, Christmas in Glass. Beginning on December 6, the feast day of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of glassblowers, the island transforms into a dazzling display of holiday spirit, Murano style, with decorations crafted entirely from glass. The most iconic part of these celebrations is the stunning seven-metre glass Christmas tree, which shimmers under the winter sun. The decorations strung above the canals add an extra touch of charm to Murano’s already picturesque and enchanting island atmosphere.

You can reach Murano easily by vaporetto. The most direct routes are Line 4.1 or 4.2 from Fondamente Nove or San Zaccaria, taking about 15–20 minutes. You can also take Line 3 directly from Piazzale Roma or the train station (Santa Lucia).

Even the often-mentioned market at Campo Santo Stefano turned out to be a mystery. I went there myself and found nothing, and no official source seems to confirm it’s been active in years. The last real picture I found of someone who had actually visited was back in 2018! At a certain point while writing this post, I honestly felt like a detective, sorting through layers of misinformation just to uncover what’s real. And after doing all this work, I wanted to make sure there was at least one trustworthy guide out there for anyone planning their own Christmas trip to Venice.
