A glass of wine, a little food, and back to work or on to the next place.

Over time, this turned into a ritual. Certain bars became known for specific bites. Some dishes, like baccalà mantecato or sarde in saor, became staples. Even as tourism changed the city, the locals held onto this habit. It remains one of the few things in Venice that outside trends haven’t entirely reshaped.

Here are a few names you’ll often spot, and what they mean:

• Baccalà mantecato is whipped salted cod, creamy and mild. It’s usually spread on bread or polenta.
• Sarde in saor are sardines marinated with vinegar, onions, raisins, and pine nuts. Sweet, sour, and very Venetian.
• Polpette are meatballs. They might be made from beef, tuna, or even vegetables. Often served warm and deep-fried.
• Speck e brie is smoked ham with soft cheese. It’s a common topping for crostini.
• Tonno e cipolla means tuna and onion. This mix is often piled onto bread or served in small bowls.
• Gorgonzola e noci is gorgonzola with walnuts. Rich and salty with a crunch.
• Zucchine ripiene are stuffed zucchini, usually with meat or cheese. Sometimes served cold, sometimes baked.

A short walk from the tourist centre of San Marco, Bacaro Risorto is always busy but still feels relaxed. The bar offers a changing selection of snacks like baccalà mantecato, octopus cicchetti, fried meatballs, and cuttlefish. Prices are fair, and the food is fresh. Take your glass and plate outside and eat with the regulars.

Corner Pub

Corner Pub is a low-key bar near Via Garibaldi with friendly staff, cheap drinks, and a relaxed local vibe. Prosecco and a variety of Spritz are €3, snacks are €2, and the service is quick even when it’s busy. People often sit on the steps outside when seats fill up, but there’s more room in the back if you head inside. Order food on the right, drinks on the left. Since this spot has become so popular, it has a great selection of vegetarian cicchetti like Cacio e pepe, eggs and vegetables, and fried chickpeas.

Osteria Al Squero

Right by the old gondola workshop in Dorsoduro, Osteria Al Squero is a favourite for locals and visitors alike. The cicchetti are fresh, well-made, and perfect for a quick lunch or snack. Popular picks include shrimp, tuna with onion, and veggie options. The spritz here is often made in the classic style, without Aperol, and the staff are happy to explain the difference. Seating inside is limited, but most people sit outside by the canal. Just watch out for the seagulls. The view is part of the charm, and prices are fair. It’s a great break from the busier parts of Venice.

Cantine del Vino già Schiavi

Cantine del Vino già Schiavi is a classic bacaro (Venetian bar that serves local wine and cicchetti) in Dorsoduro, tucked beside a quiet canal. Known for its wide selection of creative crostini, think tuna with cocoa, shrimp with truffle artichoke, or gorgonzola with pear. The wine list is long, and prices are low. There’s no seating, just people gathered outside with a glass and a plate. It’s busy at lunch, but always worth the wait.

Osteria Ai Pugni

Tucked near the Ponte dei Pugni, this rustic, wood-beamed bar hosts a steady mix of locals and travellers, especially in the late afternoon. The Ponte dei Pugni, or the “Bridge of Fists,” is a small bridge where rival Venetian neighbourhoods once held fistfights to settle disputes before the 1700s! So the historic setting of this spot makes it one of my favourites. Snack by the canal, and sample some of their creamed cod, fried cheese stuffed with tomato confit, or melt-in-your-mouth fresh porchetta.

Bacarotto

Bacarotto is a warm, well-kept spot near Campo San Polo serving high-quality cicchetti made with care. The fig with anchovy and squid with artichoke cream stand out, and they use better bread than most places. Prices are a little higher but fair for what you get. The spritz, especially the Select, is excellent, and there’s a solid wine and beer list. Staff are friendly and welcoming, and they often host live music in the evening.

Cantina Do Mori

Cantina Do Mori is one of the oldest wine bars in Venice, dating back to 1462. It’s small, dimly lit, and full of character, with copper pots overhead and wine barrels stacked along the walls. There are no tables, just space to stand and drink. The wine is served from the tap, and the staff know their stuff. A classic spot for traditional cicchetti and a great glass of wine.

Al Timon

Al Timon is a lively canal-side bar in Cannaregio known for generous cicchetti, strong drinks, and a buzzing crowd, especially in the evening. People sit on moored boats or gather by the water with wine and snacks. Even if you think you aren’t the biggest seafood fan, I would encourage you to try the codfish here as it is so deep in flavour and not too fishy. The cheese and the pear are another favourite if you’re a vegetarian.

Bar All’Arco

Tucked just behind the Rialto, this tiny, no-nonsense bacaro is a local favourite for fresh, simple cicchetti made with ingredients from the nearby market. The counter is packed with options like marinated anchovies, salt cod, and seasonal crostini. There’s no seating, and it gets crowded fast, but the wine is cheap and the food is some of the most honest in the city. A classic stop for a quick bite and a glass before moving on.

Cantina Aziende Agricole

Cantina Aziende Agricole is another one of my favourite spots in the Cannargeio. It’s a casual wine shop where you can pop in, grab a bottle for dinner, but also indulge in a few cichetti to get you geared up for dinner. Osteria al Ponte

Osteria al Ponte, near Santa Croce, this spot stays low-key even with tourists nearby. They have a lot of really inventive combinations like octopus in busara sauce, braised escarole and anchovy and gorgonzola and anchovy. One of my personal favourite aspects of this spot is the fact that they can add slices of cheese to your cicchetti board, and as a huge cheese fan, this really won me over!

Stop 1: Morning Brew & Jugo at Café Santa Marta Bar

Imagine a little square kissed by morning light, the air sweet with blossom and fruit. That’s where you’ll find Café Santa Marta Bar, a down‑to‑earth local spot that feels almost secret. Maybe it’s the way the empty chairs wait under those leafy branches, or how the man behind the counter greets you like an old friend.

Here, the star isn’t just the coffee, it’s that freshly squeezed orange juice. It’s vivid, bright, impossible to bottle up anywhere else. Order one of each: a glass of juice so pure it practically sparkles, and a rich café con leche brewed strong and smooth. Sip slowly. Watch sunlight dance on the square’s cobblestones. Honestly, you couldn’t ask for a gentler way to ease into a day of tasting your way through Andalusia.

Stop 2: Morning Brew at Cafetería Catunambú

Our second stop brings us back to the storied stretch of Calle Sierpes, the same shaded lane Sevillanos have wandered for centuries. Imagine this narrow street as a ribbon of history, once lined with bookshops and haberdasheries, where locals came to see and be seen. It still carries that gentle, elegant buzz. Round the corner to Cafetería Catunambú. Catunambú is one of Andalusia’s oldest coffee brands, and there’s something oddly poetic about sipping it on the same street where merchants once sold silks and spices.

At this stop, skip the coffee this time, go straight for their hot chocolate a la taza. It’s thick, velvety, almost luxurious and perfect to pair with a Sevillian churro. These aren’t the sugar-rolled versions you might know. Seville’s are light, crisp, and made for dunking into thick, velvety chocolate a la taza. Sit outside on one of the tables along the street, and watch delivery carts navigate the stone blocks, tourists taking photos and lsitening to the distant chime of church bells.

Stroll over to the Triana Neighbourhood

From the marble counter of Cafe Catunambú, step back onto the soft shadow of Calle Sierpes and head south past Callejón Azofaifo, then weave right onto Pedro Caravaca and Velázquez before swinging left onto O’Donnell. A quick jog through Plaza de la Magdalena and down Murillo brings you to San Pablo, which morphs into Puerta de Triana II, known locally as the Bridge of Triana. Climb its gentle rise and soak in views of pastel façades reflected in the river, boats drifting lazily below the river Guadalquivir, once called the “Great River” by Romans. This waterway has long been the lifeblood of Seville’s trade and exploration. Its muddy waters carried olive oil, silk, and even treasure from the New World, and its banks have seen everything from Phoenician traders to 16th‑century galleons setting sail.

On the far side lies Triana, a district that feels worlds away from the ornate cathedrals and royal plazas. I think it was the Moorish potters who first settled here, drawn by the clay in the river’s floodplain. Over centuries, Trianeros perfected ceramics, made sails for ships, and sang flamenco in its narrow lanes. Maybe it’s that blend of artisan grit and river‑borne romance that gives Triana its magnetic pull. Even today, you can still feel artistry and water woven into every tile and tavern.

Stop 3: Market Stroll & Nibbles at Mercado de Triana

Markets are museums of the edible kind, and Mercado de Triana is one of the best. Built on the remains of the old Castillo de San Jorge, once the dark seat of the Spanish Inquisition, this space has transformed over time from a symbol of fear into a celebration of life, colour, and community. In the early 1800s, it became a bustling plaza de abastos, and after years of wear and tear, it was carefully rebuilt and reopened in 2001.

Step inside today and you’re greeted by a warm blur of sound, smell, and colour. The stalls are housed under cast-iron beams and decorated in the signature ceramic tiling that Triana is famous for. It feels both traditional and alive. You’ll pass piles of sun-warmed oranges from the Aljarafe hills, striped watermelons from Huelva, fresh herbs spilling from baskets, and seafood still glistening from the morning haul. Vendors chat across counters and regulars call each other by name.

If you’re turning your stop at Mercado de Triana into a casual lunch, focus on three essential tastes of Andalusia. Start with bacalao en adobo, tender cod marinated in vinegar, garlic, and spices, then fried until golden and crisp. Follow that with a few slices of jamón ibérico de bellota, shaved fresh from the leg and so rich and silky it almost melts on your tongue. Round it all out with a chilled bowl of salmorejo, that thick, creamy tomato purée topped with crumbled egg and cured ham. Together, they make a perfect, no-fuss lunch that captures the heart of Sevillian market culture.

Stop 4: Sweet Pause at Dulcería Manu Jara

Exiting the market, a walk down Calle Pureza leads you to one of Triana’s true treasures: Dulcería Manu Jara. While there’s a smaller stall inside the Triana market, I really recommend visiting the main shop. Tucked into a beautiful traditional storefront, an elegant mix of old-world detail and artisan flair, inside this delicious bakery is an extra selection of cakes and chocolates elegantly laid out in the glass cases, each one a little work of art.

At Dulcería Manu Jara, you’ll find a refined selection of traditional Spanish and Sevillian treats. Staples like milhojas (layered puff pastry with cream), tartaletas filled with fruit or rich mousses, and tocino de cielo (a silky egg yolk flan) showcase classic Andalusian flavours with an artisanal twist. You might also spot empanadillas dulces filled with pumpkin jam or custard, delicate brazo de gitano sponge rolls, and the occasional polvorón or tarta de Santiago.

Stop 5: Wander and Relax near the Plaza de España

After indulging at Dulcería Manu Jara, it’s time to stretch your legs, and make a little room for what’s next. Head south along Calle Pureza, one of Triana’s most charming streets, lined with azulejos, iron balconies, and bursts of bougainvillea. You’ll pass by the iconic Capilla del Carmen, its ornate tower watching over the water, then reach the graceful arc of the Puente de San Telmo. Cross here for a quieter, more contemplative view of the Guadalquivir. Fewer tourists, more sky. The kind of bridge that invites slow steps and long glances.

Once you’re back on the east side of the river, follow the curve down into Parque de María Luisa, or as I like to think of it, Seville’s green heart. Make your way through the park, towards the Plaza de España, vast semicircle of red brick and tile curves around a calm moat, where rowboats drift under ornate ceramic bridges. As you walk, you pass 48 tiled alcoves, one for each province, each with its own colourful story and place to sit. Look up at the painted columns and coffered ceilings, pause on the sweeping staircase, or just wander slowly beneath the arches. Spanish guitar might echo in the background, the sun catches on glazed tiles, and for a moment, the city feels like a living postcard.

If the sun starts to press down a little too heavily, you’ve got an excellent escape just across the road: Premier Garden Cocktail Bar. Tucked beside the park near the river’s edge, it’s quiet, leafy, and beautifully relaxed. Cool drinks, comfy seating, and a garden atmosphere that feels like a secret. Whether you order a crisp tinto de verano or something sparkling with citrus, this is the kind of place that invites you to linger. Sit still for a while and watch the light shift through the trees.

Stop 6: Midday Devotion at La Fresquita

From Premier Garden Cocktail Bar, head north and follow the winding path to Calle San Fernando, then turn right onto Paseo de Catalina de Ribera, a shaded promenade perfect for a slow stroll. Climb the steps at Antonio el Bailarín, veer left onto Calle Lope de Rueda, and continue through the narrow lanes of Santa Cruz. A few turns later, you’ll reach Calle Mateos Gago, where La Fresquita waits quietly on the left, tucked between churches and tiled façades, full of tradition and charm.

Tiny, sacred, and full of character, La Fresquita feels like stepping into a different century. It’s a hole-in-the-wall bar that doubles as a shrine to Holy Week (Semana Santa). Religious prints line the walls. The bar’s barely wide enough for two people. Here, order a glass of manzanilla sherry, and if you’re feeling brave, you need to try one of the local seasonal specialties, caracoles (snails). When they come into season, they’re a revelation, snackable, spicy, and uniquely Sevilliano. If snails aren’t quite your thing, go for something a little more familiar but just as rooted in Sevillian tradition: espinacas con garbanzos. This humble dish of stewed spinach and chickpeas is a staple of Andalusian home cooking, often seasoned with garlic, cumin, paprika, and a splash of sherry vinegar.

Stop 7: Wine & Cheese at Bar Alfalfa

From La Fresquita, walk down Calle Mateos Gago and turn left onto Calle Fabiola. Keep going straight as it becomes Federico Rubio, then turn right onto Mármoles. Take a left onto Muñoz y Pabón, follow the curve onto Cabeza del Rey Don Pedro, then turn left onto Candilejo, Bar Alfalfa will be just ahead on your right.

Bar Alfalfa is cozy and intimate, with a vintage soul. The space is cozy and often buzzing, locals packed shoulder to shoulder with in-the-know travelers, sharing tapas, stories, and the occasional laugh with the staff behind the bar. Everything here is homemade, fresh, and full of bold Andalusian flavour. Start with a plate of Manchego cheese. Aged and nutty, this sheep’s milk cheese is a staple across Spain and pairs beautifully with a glass of red or even a drizzle of olive oil. While it’s originally from La Mancha, you’ll find it everywhere in Andalusia. Next, cool things down with a chilled bowl of salmorejo, a thicker, creamier cousin of gazpacho. Made from ripe tomatoes, day-old bread, olive oil, and garlic, and topped with jamón and crumbled boiled egg, it’s refreshing and rich all at once. The perfect balance after the cheese.

And then, finish things off with a bowl of carrillada ibérica. This slow-cooked pork cheek stew is one of Seville’s most soulful dishes. Braised until tender in red wine and spices, it practically falls apart with a fork. Deeply savoury, comforting, and unmistakably Andalusian. Pair it all with a glass of their house vermouth, served straight from the barrel behind the bar. It’s spiced, slightly bitter, a little sweet, and completely perfect alongside the bold flavours of the meal.

Stop 8: Tapas Tour Continues with Dinner at Los Coloniales

As night starts to fall over the city, make your way to our next tapas dinner stop, Los Coloniales. Tucked into the heart of Plaza Cristo de Burgos, Los Coloniales stands where a traditional grocery and wine shop once served Sevillanos in the early 20th century. By the 1930s, the original tienda had become a local fixture, offering everyday essentials and barrels of wine. Decades later, in the 1990s, the space was lovingly restored and transformed into one of Seville’s most beloved tapas taverns. Step inside, and you’ll find an atmosphere that feels refreshingly untouched by time. The walls are painted in warm albero yellow, the tables topped in classic marble, and the wooden bar is the kind you lean on for hours. It’s simple, rustic, and unmistakably Sevillian.

The menu leans into Andalusian tradition with big-hearted dishes, such as their signature solomillo al whisky. Solomillo al whisky is a classic Sevillian dish made with tender pork sirloin seared and served in a rich garlic and whisky sauce. The whisky is cooked down, adding depth without a strong alcohol taste. It’s usually paired with crispy potatoes, perfect for soaking up the sauce. I’d also recommend trying the quail eggs with jamón, perfectly crisp and salty on toasted bread, then move on to the cheese and asparagus buñuelos, golden, gooey, and so good you’ll want a second round (but for now hold off as we have one more spot on the tapas tour).

Stop 9: History on a Plate at El Rinconcillo

Our final tapas stop of the evening takes us to a place that feels less like a bar and more like a living piece of Seville’s soul: El Rinconcillo. Founded in 1670, it holds the title of the oldest bar in the city, and stepping inside, you feel every bit of that history. The moment you enter, time seems to fold in on itself. The creaking wooden floorboards, the worn mahogany beams, and the ceramic tile walls whisper stories from centuries past. Behind the bar, bottles of fino and oloroso sherry rest in neat rows, and the staff, dressed in traditional black and white, still chalk your order directly onto the bar, just as they’ve done for generations. Locals stand shoulder-to-shoulder with visitors, sipping sherry and nibbling on classic Andalusian tapas.

Let’s start with the jamón ibérico, sliced fresh from the legs hanging above the bar, this is one of the best places in Seville to try it. The flavour is rich, nutty, and melts on your tongue in the way only truly good jamón can. Next, go for the almejas gallegas, large clams from Galicia. They’re tender, briny, and served simply to let their natural flavour shine. And if you’re still hungry, don’t miss the pulpo a la brasa, grilled octopus, perfectly charred on the outside and buttery-soft inside. A final bold bite to wrap up the night. The most traditional, and arguably best, drink to order at El Rinconcillo is a glass of fino sherry. Fino is a dry, pale sherry that hails from Andalusia, and it’s deeply tied to the culture and history of Seville. Served cold in a small glass (copita), it’s crisp, slightly nutty, and perfect alongside salty tapas.

Stop 10: Nightcap at Bar Garlochí

And finally, we end the night somewhere unforgettable, Bar Garlochí, a place that feels less like a bar and more like stepping into the dreamworld of Semana Santa after one too many glasses of vermouth. The moment you walk in, you’re hit with the scent of incense, thick and heady, like a church at twilight. Candles flicker in every corner. Statues of virgins and saints line the walls, draped in velvet and lace, watching over your drink with solemn eyes. Gold-framed processional photos hang alongside crimson curtains. It’s part shrine, part fever dream, part tongue-in-cheek homage to the city’s most sacred season.

And then there’s the signature drink: Sangre de Cristo (the blood of Christ). Served in a deep goblet with the seriousness of communion, it’s a sweet, potent concoction of uncertain ingredients (they’ll never tell you what’s in it), delivered with a flair that borders on theatrical. It’s rich, red, and dramatic, like sipping a relic.

By the end of the day, it won’t just be your appetite that’s satisfied, it’ll be your sense of belonging. In Seville, food is more than fuel. It’s memory, heritage, celebration, and defiance, served up on chipped ceramic, passed hand to hand, often between people who only just met.

Where to Find Mulled Wine in Paris?

The easiest place to assuredly find Vin Chaud in Paris is at one of the city’s many enchanting Christmas markets, like those at La Défense and the Tuileries Garden. For a more intimate experience, French bistros throughout the city advertise their ‘vin chaud’ on chalkboards on the street, highlighting spots to stop in for a warming cup while enjoying some relaxing Parisian ambiance. However, if you’re looking for a truly cozy and relaxing experience, I recommend La Méthode Restaurant in the Latin Quarter. Its warm and inviting interior, featuring stone walls and exposed wooden beams, exudes the charm of an authentic Parisian bistro, making it the perfect setting to savour a warm cup of mulled wine.

Foie Gras

In Paris, the holidays are a time to indulge in culinary delights that exude luxury and tradition, and foie gras is at the heart of many festive celebrations. This controversial delicacy, made from duck or goose liver, has been a symbol of French gastronomy for centuries and became a staple of French holiday tables as early as the 18th century, associated with lavish feasts and celebratory meals. Its buttery texture and exquisite taste pair beautifully with seasonal treats like fig jam, onion confit, or toasted brioche, creating a balanced savoury and sweet that feels particularly festive.

Where to Eat Foie Gras at Christmas in Paris

Comptoir de la Gastronomie, located in Paris’ 1st arrondissement, is a renowned establishment that seamlessly blends a gourmet delicatessen with a traditional French restaurant. With a history spanning over a century, it has become a cherished destination for locals and visitors seeking authentic French culinary experiences. You can find Aligot in the enchanting Christmas market in the Tuileries Gardens. The steaming mound of cheese with bread and sausage is one of my favourite things to enjoy, and it warms me from the inside out while I’m strolling through the twinkling lights of the market. If you’d rather enjoy your Aligot inside, Bistrot des Vosges in the heart of the Marais district is a must-visit. This charming bistro is celebrated for its traditional French dishes, especially its generous helpings of Aligot.

Oysters

Oysters (“huîtres” in French) are not just a food item, but a cultural tradition that is incredibly popular in Paris and across France during Christmas and New Year celebrations. They are considered a festive delicacy and are a staple on holiday menus. The tradition of pairing them with a glass of chilled white wine or champagne adds a touch of elegance to the holiday feast, making it a cherished part of the cultural celebration.

Where to Eat Oysters at Christmas in Paris

Despite oysters often being associated with upscale dining, Christmas in Paris offers a delightful twist. Freshly shucked oysters are not just a luxury reserved for fine dining but a festive treat available at many Parisian seafood bars, brasseries, and even in the charming holiday markets. The oyster stall at the Abbesses Christmas Market in Montmartre, my personal favourite, is a unique spot that’s less crowded than the ones in the Tuileries. Bulot Bulot, a charming oyster bar nestled between the vibrant neighbourhoods of Pigalle and Abbesses, is a must-visit. They specialize in fresh oysters primarily sourced from Normandy, and their warm and welcoming staff create an atmosphere that will make you feel like a local, celebrating with friends and family.

Bûche de Noël (Yule Log)

Bûche de Noël, or Yule Log, is a quintessential French Christmas dessert that has been a beloved holiday tradition for generations. Shaped like a log to symbolize the ancient custom of burning a yule log in the hearth during winter solstice celebrations, the classic bûche de Noël is a rolled sponge cake, typically filled with buttercream, mousse, or ganache, and then coated in more buttercream or chocolate to resemble the bark of a log. Pastry chefs often decorate it with intricate details like meringue mushrooms, sugar holly leaves, or edible glitter, turning each into a miniature edible masterpiece.

Many bakeries in Paris sell Bûche de Noël, with some offering large logs for the whole family, while others have slices or miniature versions. Traditionally from the French and Swiss mountains, this Alpine dish is best eaten melted and scraped over a plate of boiled potatoes, charcuterie (cured meats like ham, salami, or prosciutto), and sometimes pickled vegetables like cornichons and onions to break up the richness of the dairy. Pair it with a glass of white wine, such as a crisp Savoie or a Riesling, for the ultimate winter comfort food experience.

Where to Eat Raclette at Christmas in Paris

At Paris’s festive markets, you can watch vendors skillfully melt wheels of cheese under heat lamps, the rich aroma drawing crowds eager for a taste. Popular markets like those at the Tuileries Garden, La Défense, and Saint-Germain-des-Prés are especially known for their raclette stands. But in Paris, you can also find restaurants dedicated to this dish, such as Les Marmottes. The restaurant’s interior features stone and wood accents, creating a cozy atmosphere reminiscent of Alpine retreats; Les Marmottes is renowned for its all-you-can-eat raclette! Diners can enjoy the interactive experience of melting their own cheese using tabletop grills, adding a fun and communal aspect to the meal.

French macarons are one of the most quintessential desserts to get in Paris. The delicate, almond-based cookies are beloved year-round, but during Christmastime, pâtisseries across the city elevate them with seasonal flavours and enchanting holiday designs.

These aren’t of the highest quality, but if you’re already in the market, the prices are reasonable and great to try. If you’re looking for the best Paris offers, I know people will tell you to go to Laduree, but I recommend the luxury flavours at Pierre Hermé. This year’s holiday assortment, part of the “Pierre par Pierre” collection, features eight unique creations, each with its own distinct flavour profile. For those seeking decadence, Aurore pairs rich chocolate with pecan praline, while Améthyste offers candied chestnut and blackcurrant’s sweet and tart harmony. More adventurous options include Églantine, Figue & Foie Gras, combining sweetbriar, fig, and foie gras for a savoury-sweet experience, and Truffe Noire & Pain Poilâne Grillé, featuring the earthy aroma of black truffle with toasted Poilâne bread!

His sleek boutiques also offer chocolates to take home. For a more relaxed experience, visit Coutume Café, a casual series of cafes across Paris where you can find hot chocolate made with high-quality ingredients, perfect for warming up during a winter stroll or the atmosphere inside one of their chic cafes.

History of Whisky in Scotland

Whisky production in Scotland dates back to at least the 15th century, with the first recorded mention of distilling whisky appearing in 1494. The traditional Gaelic term for whisky, “uisge beatha,” translates to “water of life,” highlighting its importance in Scottish culture. Scotland’s whisky is made throughout the various regions in the country, each producing distinct styles of whisky influenced by the geography, climate, and production techniques. This regional diversity adds to the cultural richness of whisky in Scotland.

What Whisky Tour to Take?

The whisky industry is a crucial part of the Scottish economy, too. Scotland is home to over 130 whisky distilleries, making it the largest producer of whisky in the world. So, no matter where you are in the country, you’ll be able to find the perfect distillery. If you’re like me and don’t have an affinity for whisky, many interesting-themed tours add something special to your experience outside of just the whiskey tasting. There are chocolate pairings that soften the taste of liquor, storytelling tours that add a whimsical touch with folklore tales woven into the experience and even a cheese-tasting experience paired with the whisky. We opted for the chocolate pairing tour as it was in a great location, and I really love chocolate!

Journey to the Countryside

Many tours you can book with provide transportation, but we opened to book directly through the Glengoyne Whisky website and make our way to the Distillery, located inDumgoyne, on our own. Even though the distillery is located far outside the city, the X10 bus (destination Balfron) departs from Buchanan Bus Station, which is right in the centre of Glasgow! And stops at the gates of Glengoyne. The bus ride up to this distillery was mostly enjoyable. Watching the buildings disappear is always so interesting, and the raw, natural landscape reveals itself to you as you travel further away from the city centre. We cruised by rolling hills and seas of green grass.

As is the case with everything you travel into Scotland, the narrow roads begin to twist and turn across the rugged countryside. And yet, this enormous bus was barreling down the thinnest country roads at speeds rivalling a highway! It felt like a rollercoaster, and I was so thankful when we saw our stop in the distance.

History of the Glengoyne Distillery

The Glengoyne Distillery was officially established in 1833 by George Connell, who originally leased the land on which the distillery stands. It was initially known as Burnfoot Distillery, named after the burn (a small stream) that provided the distillery with its water source.

In 1876, the distillery changed its name to Glenguin, which later evolved into the current name, Glengoyne. The name “Glengoyne” is derived from “Glen Guin,” meaning “Glen of the Wild Geese” in Gaelic, reflecting the distillery’s picturesque setting at the foot of Dumgoyne Hill.

Location of the Glengoyne Distillery

Glengoyne is unique in straddling the boundary between the Highlands and the Lowlands of Scotland. The distillery is located in the Highlands, while its maturation warehouses are in the Lowlands. This geographic split is reflected in the character of its whisky, which is known for being light and delicate, without the smoky, peaty flavours typical of other Scottish whiskies.

One of the most distinctive aspects of Glengoyne’s production process is its commitment to unpeated whisky. Glengoyne does not use peat smoke to dry its barley, unlike many Scottish distilleries. Instead, the barley is dried using warm air, which allows the natural flavours of the barley to shine through, resulting in a whisky with a softer, fruitier profile.

The Beauty of Glengoyne Distillery

Glengoyne is regularly called the “most beautiful whisky distillery in Scotland,” and I can truly see why. If you’re wondering why I’m spelling it “Whisky,” not “Whiskey,” it is because it is the traditional Scottish spelling. The addition of the “e” is left for the Irish “Whiskey”.

As you walk into the distillery, past the outer buildings, you come upon the water source from which all the fresh spring water for the whisky comes. The air was dewy, and you could almost taste the whisky.

After a short presentation about whisky and its history in Scotland, we toured the mini-museum inside, where the walls were covered in pieces of ephemera and old, traditional tools once used in this distillery to make the whisky.

Touring the Distillery

The distillery was relatively small but beautifully laid out. We entered the room where the whisky was fermenting in HUGE wooden containers. We couldn’t take photos here because of the risk of electricity causing an explosion! They would lift the lids of these huge barrels and allow us to sniff the fermenting whisky. It almost makes you pass out, and the smell is so strong! After touring this room, you face and face the vast copper distillers who turn the fermented barley into whisky!

Behind lock and key are some of the oldest and most precious barrels for the Distillery. Some are owned by kings, queens and other wealthy people from all over the world. Depending on how long the whisky is aged, the colour changes. It deepens like a beautiful amber rainbow.

Inside the showroom were all the different varieties of the whisky they sell, from a short eight-year single malt to a bank-breaking 12-year cask-strength malt. Every time you distill whisky, a little of the liquid disappears in the process. This small portion is called the “angels share.”

The Chocolate and Whisky Pairing

After walking around the showroom for a bit, we headed to the house where we were to have our Chocolate and Whisky Tasting. The key to eating chocolate and whisky is in the pairings. Individual chocolate will help bring out the flavour notes in the whisky. It changes the taste of the alcohol. The chocolate will cut your palate, making the taste less harsh, and it will also help to increase the depth of the flavour profile.

We tried two different whiskies along with the chocolate: an eight-year and a 15-year. There were four flavours: milk chocolate and caramel, dark chocolate with dried fruit and berries, dark chocolate with raspberries and dark chocolate with sea salt. My favourite was the raspberry. It was bright and sweet and mellowed the flavour of the whisky.

A Newfound Appreciation for Whisky

Although I’m not the biggest whisky fan, this experience allowed me to appreciate it more on a higher level, and I found the history of this distillery a fascinating study. Getting to taste the whisky and the chocolate is the way to go if you’re new to whisky or just looking for something different! So if you’re on the fence about taking a whisky tour, I would say definitely do it, as it is not just about tasting the alcohol but also about learning more about the history of Scotland, diving into their culture, and best of all, getting outside the cities to see the gorgeous landscapes surrounding the distilleries.

We went to find out, and here’s what you need to know before stepping inside.

A Step Back in Time: The Atmosphere at U Fleků

As you enter U Fleků, you’re immediately transported to another era. The pub’s ancient architecture is one of its most striking features. With dark wooden ceiling beams, medieval traceries along the walls, thick glass windows, and long communal tables, it feels like you’re stepping into a medieval castle. The building’s history is palpable, making Prague’s oldest brewery and a must-see for history buffs.

U Fleků boasts eight different halls, each with its unique charm. However, you shouldn’t miss the Akademie, which houses original decor dating back to the 1500s. Here, you’ll find yourself surrounded by history as you enjoy your meal and drink, with live accordion or tuba music adding to the atmosphere.

Navigating the Tourist Trap: What to Watch Out For

While U Fleků offers a unique and historical experience, it has become somewhat of a tourist trap. The pub’s popularity means it’s often crowded with visitors, and some staff have developed tactics to take advantage of the unprepared.

One of the most notorious tricks is the “welcome shot.” Upon entering, you might be handed a shot of local liqueur without ordering it. It may seem like a complimentary gesture, but if you drink it, you’ll find it added to your bill at a price higher than a pint of beer. To avoid this, kindly decline the shot when offered and stick to ordering what you want.

The staff can sometimes be brusque, likely due to the constant influx of tourists. However, a polite approach, with a few Czech phrases like “please” (prosím) and “thank you” (děkuji), can go a long way in making your experience smoother.

The Beer: Why U Fleků is Still Worth a Visit

Despite the potential pitfalls, the beer at U Fleků is what keeps many visitors coming back. The pub is renowned for its dark, thick, and heady lagers, brewed on-site in their microbrewery. Their black beer, in particular, is a standout and the perfect way to unwind after sightseeing in Prague. The beer is affordable and fantastic, making it a highlight of the visit.

If you’re visiting in the summer, don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy your drink in their spacious beer garden, where you can relax in a more open and lively atmosphere.

Dining at U Fleků: Traditional Czech Cuisine

Alongside the beer, U Fleků offers a menu of authentic Czech dishes that pair perfectly with their brews. If you’re just in for a snack, the cheese plate is a great choice, featuring local Czech cheeses, olives, and slices of bread. Their homemade garlic soup is a favourite during the colder months, providing warmth and comfort.

Gracia is one of the neighbourhoods in Barcelona most affected by housing shortages and overpriced markets due to the influx of Airbnbs throughout the area. My friends who live in Gracia and welcome me to their home every summer are experts on the topic, as graffiti stating “Tourists Go Home” is often a common sight in the neighbourhood. Barcelona is set to ban tourist rental apartments through Airbnb by 2028. This might leave you wondering if you’re welcome in the area at all as a tourist. However, the crux of this issue surrounds soaring apartment rent thanks to tourists and day-tripping tourists coming into the city and, as Mayor Carlos Velázquez Romo stated, “leaving nothing behind for the city.” So what can you do to be a good tourist in the city, especially in a precious barrio like Gracia?

Where to Stay in Gracia?

Well, first, stay in hotels! Staying in local hotels helps reduce the pressure on the housing market, as they do not remove residential housing options from locals. One of the best hotels in the area is Sonder’s Hotel La Casa del Sol, a charming hotel with a cozy atmosphere, offering comfortable rooms and a rooftop terrace ($). Casa Bella Gracia is a stylish, eco-friendly boutique hotel in Barcelona’s vibrant Gracia neighbourhood. It blends contemporary decor and traditional Catalan elements, ensuring a memorable and sustainable stay for its guests. If you wanna splurge, Casa Fuster Hotel is a five-star luxury hotel located in a historic modernist building, offering elegant rooms, a rooftop pool, and stunning views ($$$).

How to be a Respectful Tourist

Secondly, and this will be an easy one for the contents of this tour, spend money in the areas you visit. Give back and indulge in the area’s foods and drinks to ensure you contribute as you visit. Be mindful of noise, especially in residential areas. Avoid making excessive noise late at night. Dispose of trash properly and recycle when possible. Keep the city clean for both residents and other visitors. With all this in mind, you can be assured you are the best kind of tourist rather than a “bad tourist” as possible while visiting these incredible spots.

A Taste of Gracia

In the early morning, you’ll wander along narrow alleyways that are so quiet you could hear a pin drop; with their shutters closed and windows shut, it looks almost empty. But come the afternoon, when the city begins to wake up from their siesta, the neighbourhood comes alive as the shutters are opened, the brightly coloured interior is revealed, and the diners explode onto the streets. Tapas, bars and restaurants are abundant in Gracia. Each offers their take on this quintessentially Spanish cuisine. But I’ve done my best to select my favourites that we come back to time and time again!

What to Order?

For the most part, picking the best Tapas spot is more about the vibe than the uniqueness of the food. Most tapas joints serve a pretty similar menu, consisting of traditional Spanish dishes, but there are a few standout items at different spots along the way that I’ll be sure to point out. In Gracia, compared to the more tourist areas, menus tend to be all in Catalan or Spanish. You can always whip out your handy Google Translator to help understand what to order, but some of my favourites that you can’t go wrong with are pan con tomate (crusty bread with fresh tomatoes), patatas bravas ( crispy potatoes topped with spicy tomato sauce and aioli ), croquetas (deep-fried breadcrumb-coated rolls with different fillings) and Tortilla Española (Spanish omelette made from eggs, potatoes, and onions).

There is also Pimientos de Padrón (grilled green peppers), Gambas al Ajillo (shrimp sautéed in garlic and olive oil), Jamón Ibérico (cured ham made from Iberian pigs), alcachofas fritas con miel (artichoke hearts deep-fried and drizzled with honey), Banderillas (gherkins, peppers, olives, pickled onions and anchovies places on a small skewer), Manchego cheese, and caracoles (snails are cooked in a savoury broth with chorizo, tomatoes, onions, garlic, and herbs).

Sol Soler

Located in the lively Plaça del Sol, Sol Soler is a beloved spot for locals and visitors. This was one of the first places we came to when we arrived in the neighbourhood, and it became the spot we went to almost every night after work to enjoy a tinto de verano on the patio. Tinto de Verano is a refreshing Spanish drink perfect for summer instead of sangria. It’s made with red wine and lemon-lime soda, and often, different spots add their unique blends, like a Sol Soler, where they add in some vermouth!

While the patio is always lively, I also adore the interior for its authentic decor, warm wooden tables and chairs, traditional Spanish tiles, and eclectic wall art that adds a cozy, homey feel. Soft, ambient lighting enhances the ambiance, creating an inviting space to relax and enjoy your meal.

Can Codina

Can Codina is another one of those spots we couldn’t resist. Even when there was a line to get inside on busy nights during the Gracia Festival, we would patiently wait out our turn to get inside to enjoy the cozy, rustic traditional decor, with a touch of traditional Catalan character with vintage pictures of the old neighbourhood lining the walls, that gives it a homely feel.

Even when it’s super busy, the ambiance is relaxed and laid-back with many regular patrons, and you feel like you’re dining with friends. In addition to their fantastic, yet paired back, selection of tapas, their bar game is on with shelves lined with an impressive selection of local wines, spirits, and my favourite, the vermouth de la casa.

Ginger & Seltz

Unlike many other spots on this list, Ginger & Seltz is a haven for all dietary preferences, offering a modern twist on traditional tapas with a menu that features a variety of vegan and vegetarian tapas. While most tapas menus have only a couple of vegan and vegetarian items, such as pan con tomate or Padron peppers, this spot invites everyone to explore its diverse range of international and Spanish flavours.

And don’t worry about bringing non-vegans to this point; they also serve many fish dishes, such as the phenomenal Galician cockles with kimchi cream. I’m not a vegan or vegetarian, but I LOVED their jackfruit nachos and vegan “sashimi.”

Bar Roure

Bar Roure is a classic tapas bar tucked away in a quiet corner of Gracia. It is a local hot spot with an unpretentious setting, good prices, and hearty dishes. One of my favourite tapas to order here is the caracoles, a traditional Spanish dish featuring snails—the Spanish version of escargot! The snails are cooked in a rich, savoury broth with chorizo and simmered until tender.

If you want to try a few different things, go for the set lunch menu, which features a first, second and dessert course selected by the chef with seasonal ingredients. A great way to try a new dish!

Bar Bodega Quimet

Bar Bodega Quimet is a small, charming spot known for its delicious, old-school tapas and vintage Spanish style. The variety of dishes, while not overwhelming, offers unique tastes and experiences that stand out from traditional tapas bars. The beef cheek is a highlight, melting in your mouth. The staff are helpful and polite, making you feel welcome and like a local, not a tourist. This is an excellent spot for an authentic tapas experience with reasonable prices and a welcoming atmosphere. If you are interested in vermouth, their selection is fantastic, with barrels piled high along the walls.

Bodega Neus

Bodega Neus is a beloved little gem in Gracia, known for its fantastic service and delicious food at very reasonable prices. This cozy spot offers a great selection of Catalonian wines and standout dishes like the Catalan bomb, tuna with wasabi sauce, and truffle omelette. The tapas, including stuffed olives, oxtail, patatas bravas, smoked salmon, mussels, squid, and anchovies, are highly recommended. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive, enhancing the overall dining experience. It’s a must-visit for authentic, well-prepared tapas in a welcoming atmosphere.

Demo Gastrobar

Demo Gastrobar is one of the more sophisticated dining experiences on the list with its gourmet tapas. The bar opens onto the peaceful and playful Plaça de Narcís Oller, making sitting out on the patio or just inside a perfect place for local people watching. The menu features creative dishes that blend traditional flavours with modern techniques. Highlights include the must-try Ensaladilla Rusa, a perfect steak tartare, and otherworldly fried eggs. The lamb burger is a standout and highly recommended by diners. The menu features a great selection of natural wines and dishes that showcase high-quality ingredients and creative culinary touches.

Bar But

Bar But in Barcelona is a neighbourhood treasure offering a delightful dining experience with top-notch service and delicious, original dishes. The intriguing menu features creative twists on classic Spanish favourites, such as truffle brie, patatas, bravas waffles, and artichokes with pancetta. The counter seating provides an excellent view of the food preparation, adding to the experience. With super friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere, it’s a place you’ll want to return to.

Japanese curry is unlike any other curry we’ve tried before. Despite its British origins, it’s not like Thai, Indian, or even English curries. The British first introduced Japanese curry to the country during the Meiji era (1868–1912). It was easy to prepare since the main ingredients didn’t require refrigeration. However, curry didn’t gain popularity until the late 1960s. Over time, the Japanese customized the dish, changing the ingredients to make it uniquely Japanese.

Japanese curry is more like a European stew. Start by making a roux (cooking flour and butter), then add a meat stock to deepen the flavour. After cooking it for hours, you end up with a thick, dark brown sauce, almost like a meat gravy. This rich elixir is garnished on Japanese rice with your favourite toppings.

Curry’s Rise in Popularity

Curry only gained widespread popularity in the 1920s after it became available nationwide as an “instant” mix. Housewives could cook curry using pre-made dried cubes, rehydrate them at home, and add leftover proteins and veggies. As more households embraced curry, its presence in restaurants increased, eventually becoming a home and restaurant dining staple.

Spices are also crucial in creating authentic Japanese curry. In summer, Japanese people eat hot and spicy food to cool down by sweating. So you’ll see people enjoying hot and spicy curry morning, noon, and night—regardless of the weather.

The Best Place for Curry: Coco Curry Ichibanya

In my opinion, the best place to satisfy your curry cravings is Coco Curry Ichibanya! This restaurant has been one of Japan’s favourite curry chains since 1978. When you enter, a friendly host will seat you at a table. They offer a full menu in English and other languages in larger cities, making it easy to spot to make your first Japanese Curry order.

While you can always select one of their pre-determined curry combos, I like customizing my order. The first step is choosing your curry sauce; you can select from pork, beef, or hashed beef. Next, you choose your rice portion, and if you opt for a small one (200 grams), you’ll save about a dollar on your order. Then, you choose your spice level, ranging from 1 to 10. Even levels 2 to 3 are intense, but different locations vary in their spice application, so it’s always a bit of a gamble. If you love spice, take the risk; stick to level one (or zero) if you prefer something milder. The last option is to customize your toppings. Options include fried cutlets, shrimp, sausages, vegetables, cheese, kimchi, and garlic. Each item is priced clearly next to the ingredient.

I usually ordered pork curry with chicken cutlets, mushrooms, cheese, and garlic bits! Alongside the curry is a dish of pickles, known as tsukemono, which creates harmony in the meal and counteracts the heaviness of the rich ingredients. They’re the ultimate umami package, and the vinegar helps cut the fatty richness of the dish.

Each curry is finished with its unique spice blend, giving it a bold and distinctive taste. Moyan Curry is famous for its Lunch Buffet, where diners can sample various curry flavours and rice, salad, and side dishes. This buffet offers excellent value for money and allows guests to explore the diverse range of curries the restaurant is known for.

Nothing was as perfectly Provencal as waking up at dawn every morning and walking down to the local bakery. As you approach the boulangerie, be prepared for a sensory overload. The aroma of freshly baked bread wafts through the air, drawing you in with its irresistible allure. Your eyes feast on a display of golden baguettes, flaky croissants, and other delicacies.

We came to our local boulangerie every day on our trip. And by the end of the two-week-long stay, it was like saying goodbye to new friends. They even gifted us a bottle of their homemade lavender honey. It was all wrapped up and tied with a bow. I am still thinking about how quickly we can return to Provence, almost soley to see those people again! And of course, eat their delicious baked treats!

French Bread Laws

One of the greatest parts of staying in a small town in Provence is getting to visit the local boulangeries. No matter how small the town, there will be a boulangerie. And how do I know this? Well, it’s the law. In France, a law known as the “Décret Pain” (Bread Decree) regulates the production of baguettes. The law ensures that traditional French baguettes must be made with specific ingredients and cannot contain any additives or preservatives. The law also stipulates that baguettes must be sold in the same place they are made to ensure freshness. Even the smallest villages, without any storefronts, will have a large “dépôt de pain” van that will pull up every morning to sell fresh bread to the residents.

What Makes Provencal Boulangeries Unique?

Provence boasts a bountiful agricultural landscape. Looking out your window, you can see the golden wheat fields dancing in the wind across the countryside. Thanks to locally sourced flour, olive oil, herbs, and other regional produce, you’ll find that Provencal bakeries add their own unique flavour to classic French baked goods. And the laid-back atmosphere is much less intense than in big cities where boulangeries appear to be competing against each other for the “best croissant.” Provence has no competition but an environment of mutual respect, admiration and collaboration.

Be Aware of Opening Hours

Boulangeries, especially those in Provence, tend to have some interesting, shall we say, opening hours. The very best way to check the most up-to-date hours is to look at the sign outside the boulangerie. These will always list their opening hours for each day of the week (as often they will be different throughout the week.) Boulangeries typically open around 7 am as many people come here first thing in the morning to pick up food for the day or perhaps stock their restaurant pantry. Most boulangerie will close down from 12 pm till 2 or 3 pm for their European lunchtime. Often there will be certain days of the week they will close down completely, and in those cases, you’ll always find another boulangerie in town that will be open. They strive to ensure these are on opposite days so there is never a day without bread!

Boulangerie vs Pâtisseries

All throughout the French countryside, you’ll see signs for “Boulangeries” and “Pâtisseries.” But what is the difference between the two? Although they might both sell baked goods, a boulangerie comes from the French word “Boulanger,” which means “baker.” Boulangeries are required by law to bake their bread right on the premises. Whereas patisseries can include goods baked externally but sold in-store.

While Pâtisseries specialize in a wide range of sweet pastries, cakes, and desserts, don’t think you won’t find amazing sweet treats in the boulangerie. Most local bakers are just as talented at making delectable pastries as the ones you’ll find in patisseries.

Always Greet the Boulanger

Upon entering, you must greet the Boulanger or their staff. A simple “Bonjour” or “comment ça va?” (Hello / How are you) will go a long way in establishing a friendly connection. In France, not greeting someone with “bonjour” is considered VERY rude. And it will put the entire shopping experience off the wrong foot. 

Choosing the Right Baguette

No visit to a boulangerie in Provence is complete without indulging in a fresh baguette. To ask for a baguette simply say, “Une baguette, s’il vous plaît” (One baguette, please). But more often than not, there will be more than one option for your fresh baguettes. Unlike in North America, where a baguette is a baguette, France has many different varieties.

Baguette Ordinaire vs Traditional

The two most common varieties are the baguette ordinaire and the baguette traditional. An ordinary baguette will always be your cheapest option and is exactly what you would expect from a baguette. A traditional or artisan baguette will be slightly darker in colour, with a thicker, crispier crust, often with pinched ends. This is always my choice as I love how the flavour is more pronounced in the crust when it is a little more well done.

Pain d’Épi

A specialty type of baguette, often baked on weekends in Provence, is the Pain d’Épi. This type of bread is shaped like an ear of wheat, and often, they add different kinds of seeds onto the top of the bread. The different “ears” along the baguette make it easy to tear apart with your hands and share amongst the table. 

Baguette Levain

Another find is the baguette levain or sourdough baguette. As a huge fan of sourdough bread, combining the sourdough taste with the crispy baguette form was absolute perfection!

Baguette Complete

If you’re looking for something different, see if they sell a baguette complete. This kind of baguette is made with wholemeal flour and is more like multigrain bread. Sesame, poppy and flax are both baked into the bread and spread on top of the crust. A deliciously deep flavour.

French Bread

When buying a loaf of bread (or pain in French) in the boulangerie, the most popular variety is pain de campagne. Pain de Campagne, or country-style bread, is shaped into an oval with a thick crust and usually made with a blend of wheat and white flour. Other popular varies are pain au levain (sourdough), and pain aux céréales (rustic loaf with seeds and whole grains).

If you would like your bread pre-sliced, which makes it easier to serve on picnics, be sure to request for tranché (sliced.)

Provencal Fougasse

Fougasse is a traditional Provencal bread best recognized for its unique design, resembling a leaf or an ear of wheat. Bakers create decorative slashes and cuts in the dough, which open up during baking, giving the bread its characteristic shape. Fougasse highlights the use of olive oil from the region, adding a delightful flavour and aroma to the bread. Popular filling baked into the bread includes olives, cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, herbs (such as rosemary, thyme, or oregano), and occasionally bacon or ham. 

Viennoiseries

Viennoiseries are a category of baked goods you find in the French boulangerie. These are sweet pastries typically enjoyed at breakfasts and are often served with coffee, hot chocolate, or tea. Although eating your pastries with breakfast is very popular, these sweets are made twice daily so you can enjoy them both in the morning and afternoon. Typical Viennoiseries include croissants, pain aux chocolate, brioche, palmiers, chausson aux pommes and more!

Croissants

Next on our bread-buying adventure is the irresistible croissant. As you gaze upon the golden crescents of buttery goodness, allow yourself to be transported to a world of pure indulgence. And don’t think about the butter or calories… Just close your eyes and enjoy. While you can always opt for the traditional butter croissant, my favourites are the pain au chocolate or chocolate croissants. The same croissant base is used to fold in sticks of rich chocolate which melts in the centre of the pastry.

Pain Aux Raisins

Pain aux Raisins are made with the same croissant dough but are mixed with raisins and sometimes a pistachio filling. The raw dough is then rolled into a flat, round shape. It is meant to mirror the image of a snail shell, and as such, it is often called an “escargot.“ Strange and perhaps unappetizing name for a sweet pastry, but don’t let that put you off; these are absolutely delicious.

Palmier

A Palmier, also known as “Palm Leaf” or “Elephant Ear,” is made from a thin, flaky puff pastry. When baked, the dough is sprinkled with sugar, which caramelizes to create a crisp, golden-brown exterior. The name “Palmier” (meaning “palm tree” in French) comes from its resemblance to a palm leaf.

Sacristain

If you’re looking for something a little different, go for the Sacristains. Sacristains are delicate, sweet, and irresistibly crispy! These pastries are covered in caramelized sugar and almonds on the outside and have tender, flaky layers on the inside. The layers of puff pastry as twisted before baking to meld all the different flavours together. The result is a pastry that almost resembles a length of twisted rope. These pastries can be found all over France but are very popular in Provence. Because of their long shape, they are ideal to have with a cup of coffee as you dip the pastry into it repeatedly. Adding that delicious rich, and slightly bitter flavour to the sweet pastry. 

Chocolate Torsades 

Also similar to the Sacristain are Chocolate Torsades. The word “Torsades” comes from the French term for “twists” or “braids,” which perfectly describes the pastry’s distinctive appearance. Chocolate Torsades are made from flaky, buttery puff pastry but theses are infused with cocoa or melted chocolate. Great for kids!

Éclairs

One of the most classic French desserts has got to be Éclairs! This French pastry is known for its elongated shape, light choux pastry shell, and delectable fillings. The word “éclair” in French means “flash of lightning,” likely named due to the glistening chocolate glaze that resembles a shiny lightning bolt.

Éclairs are typically filled with flavoured creams or custards. This includes everything from vanilla or chocolate pastry cream, coffee-flavoured custard, or even fruit-flavoured creams. The pastries are then topped with glossy icing or chocolate ganache. Truly irresistible for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Tarte Tropézienne

If you love brioche, then you need to try out a Tarte Tropézienne. This amazing delicacy was born in southern France and is one of the most popular treats on the shelf. This pastry, often simply called “Tropézienne,” is made from a thick brioche bun sliced horizontally into two layers. A light, rich, cream filling is generously spread over the bottom layer. And the top is placed delicately back on top, like a sandwich. The top of the Tropézienne is then dusted with powdered sugar, giving it an elegant finish.

The pastry’s name, “Tarte Tropézienne,” was inspired by the seaside town of Saint-Tropez. Famed actress Brigitte Bardot visited Saint-Tropez during the filming of the movie, “And God Created Woman,” in the 1950s. During filming, pastry artist Alexandre Micka presented Bardot with his unique take on a brioche tart. She loved it so much that she suggested naming it “La Tarte Tropézienne.” Her endorsement helped propel the pastry to fame and contributed to its widespread popularity today.

Charlotte 

A Charlotte is a classic and elegant French pastry that feels like a special treat. The dessert is iconic thanks to its ring of ladyfingers enclosing a luscious filling, usually made of fruit, custard, or mousse. It looks like a little crown filled with sweets.

Tartelettes Chiboust

Tartelettes Chiboust, also known as Tartelettes à la Chiboust or simply Chiboust Tartlets, are made from a thin pastry crust filled with wobbly custard cream. “Chiboust” refers to French pastry chef François Chiboust, credited with its creation. After the cream is added to the baked crust, it is baked again—this time with a sprinkling of sugar on top to create a caramelized crust atop the soft cream. The tartlets are usually garnished with fresh fruit, such as raspberries or strawberries. Really, whatever is in season!

Croque Monsieur & Croque Madame 

If you’re looking to pick up something savoury or perhaps something to have for lunch, you should always make a point to grab either the Croque Monsieur or Croque Madame. These classic French sandwiches are made with ham, cheese, and a layer of rich béchamel sauce. A Croque Monsieur is a ham and cheese sandwich grilled or baked until the bread becomes golden and crispy. A Croque Madame is a variation of the Croque Monsieur but with the addition of a fried or poached egg on top. It’s a little messy to eat but well worth the effort! Both sandwiches come on sliced bread or on a baguette, depending on the preference of your Boulanger.

History of Afternoon Tea

Traditional British afternoon tea is a culinary ritual that dates back to the 19th century. The seventh Dutchess of Bedford, Anna, introduced it to the culinary scene in 1840. Anna was known to get famished by mid-afternoon and couldn’t wait for her evening meal, often served fashionably late, around 8 o’clock. Anna demanded a little nibble to make it through the day. Her request consisted of a pot of tea, bread and butter, and a slice of cake. She started inviting her friends over for this “afternoon tea.” They fell in love with it and brought it into their household. Within only a few years, afternoon tea was being served nationwide.

What is Afternoon Tea?

Afternoon tea is typically served on a tiered stand, with each level representing an integral part of the meal. The bottom level is filled with dainty finger sandwiches, always served with the crusts removed. The next tier is where you’ll find fresh scones with clotted cream and jam. And on top we have various cakes and pastries. Often the pastries you’ll find with afternoon tea are minature in size. Small macarons, mini tarts and slices of sponge cake are popular for being perfectly bite size. This is, of course, all served alongside a pot of tea.

The tea is an important part of the experience and is usually served in a teapot with a strainer. Classic blends such as English Breakfast, Earl Grey, and Darjeeling are popular, but other more exotic teas, such as green or herbal teas, may also be offered.

A traditional British afternoon tea is often enjoyed as a leisurely and indulgent experience, with guests encouraged to relax and enjoy the food, tea, and company. Many of my London afternoon tea experiences lasted well over three hours, with the pots of tea needing to be refilled on more than a few occasions. But despite the overall simplicity of the meal, afternoon tea is a pretty pricey affair. And often, it is saved for special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries or as a treat for friends and family.

The English Rose Café and Tea Shop $

The English Rose Café and Tea Shop is a charming, family-owned establishment in the heart of Grosvenor Place, just a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace. Known for its delightful afternoon tea, this cozy and inviting café offers a perfect respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. The interior is adorned with quaint vintage decor, with delicate floral wallpaper and lace curtains adding to the overall atmosphere of quaintness.

Their afternoon tea menu boasts a selection of freshly baked scones served with clotted cream and preserves. Dainty finger sandwiches cut into squares are filled with classic fillings such as cucumber and cream cheese, smoked salmon, and egg mayo. They cater to pescatarian and vegetarian diets but do not offer a gluten-free menu. On the top tier, you’ll get an assortment of pastries and cakes that are almost too beautiful to eat. My favourite was the slice of Victoria sponge, filled with fresh raspberry jam and cream! Their tea selection is equally impressive, with various loose-leaf teas and traditional blends.

The Wolseley $$

Afternoon tea at The Wolseley in London is an elegant and sophisticated affair with a French twist. Unlike some of the more traditionally British and homely interiors, the Wolseley afternoon tea is served in a beautifully restored 1920s-style dining room that exudes old-world charm and glamour. The atmosphere at the Wolseley is refined and sophisticated. The dining room is spacious and elegant, with high ceilings, polished marble floors, and plush leather banquettes to cozy up inside.

The tea service at The Wolseley contains all the traditional elements but the pièce de résistance are their selection of delicate french pastries. The pastries include treats such as miniature éclairs, Millefeuille, macarons and an added British favourite Battenberg cake.

The St. Ermin’s Tea Lounge $$$

The St. Ermin Tea Lounge‘s afternoon tea is a delightful experience inside a gorgeous Victorian Hotel that was once home to the centre of espionage in Britain during WWIII. Walking through the tree-line courtyard, you enter the reception room, which features the opulent plasterwork created by famous Victorian theatre designer J.P. Briggs. Due to the hotel’s proximity to the Houses of Parliament, this hotel was a favourite spot for politicians and spies to meet, including Winston Churchill.

St. Ermin Tea Room

The room is tastefully decorated with soft lighting, comfortable seating, and elegant table settings. The afternoon tea menu at St. Ermin is notable for its amazing finger sandwich fillings. While they stick to the traditional fillings conceptually, they really amp up the flavour with additional elements like preserved lemon in the prawns and Gin soaked smoked salmon. Plus, they have more variety in the bread to best complement the flavours of each sandwich.

I also found that the sweets served with the meal was the most inventive and daring. Salted caramel and chocolate cake, sea buckthorn cheesecake, coffee liqueur mousse on an amaretti biscuit, green tea and jasmine cake and even a cinnamon and hibiscus craqueline choux! The St. Ermin Tea Lounge also offers gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options for those with special dietary requirements.

If you can only have one-afternoon tea in London, this would be my pick! It’s right in the middle price-wise and set inside one of the most historic buildings in London. And serves up the most inventive flavours while still respecting the historical culinary traditions of afternoon tea.

Price: Afternoon Tea £43pp, £48pp with a glass of Champagne

The Rubens $$$$

The Rubens at the Palace is a luxurious hotel in the heart of London. Renowned for their sumptuous afternoon tea, the Rubens offers an unforgettable culinary experience in an elegant and sophisticated setting. The tea is served in the Palace Lounge, a plush and opulent room decorated with chandeliers, ornate mirrors, and rich fabrics, exuding a sense of grandeur and reality.

One of my favourite things about the seating here was the love seats facing the window overlooking the Royal Mews of Buckingham Palace. These were meant for two people, although I got one all to myself when I visited. This was the best seat in the house, in my opinion, because you got to watch so many people passing by, which I always find so entertaining. To add to the overall ambiance, the Rubens features a live pianist who creates a spectacular musical score to accompany your meal.

Royal Afternoon Tea

The Afternoon Tea served at the Ruben was inspired by the Royal family and Commonwealth. Being located so close to Buckingham Palace, they dubbed their menu “the Royal Afternoon Tea.” Many of their desserts contain the same seasonal produce that is in season in the Royal Orchards. The afternoon tea menu at the Rubens changes throughout the year. You’ll find special holiday menus; this year they even have a special selection for the King’s coronation.

I had my afternoon tea during the holidays and was delighted by their fantastical Christmas menu. The dishes featured classic holiday flavours transformed into bite-size desserts. Another element that makes the Rubens so special is their renowned pastry chefs. This year, the pastry kitchen at The Rubens is led by pastry chef Sarah Houghting. Houghting recently competed in Bake Off: The Professionals on Channel 4, making her a household name in Britain. But it’s not all about the desserts. I don’t want to undersell the amazing sandwiches I ate. The rare roast beef sirloin with horseradish cream served on beetroot bread was out of this world. And one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had at an afternoon tea.

Price: £70 per person or £90 with Champagne

The Ritz $$$$

For me, the penultimate experience was going to have Afternoon Tea at the Ritz Hotel in London. This was a bucket list experience for me and doing it on my birthday and sharing the experience with my dad made it all the more special. Afternoon Tea at the Ritz is truly an iconic and indulgent experience steeped in tradition and luxury. You will be transported to a bygone era of glamour and sophistication from the moment you arrive. Afternoon tea at the Ritz is served in the stunning Palm Court. An opulent room with ornate towering pillars, sparkling chandeliers, 24-carat gold details and a pianist playing classical music in the background.

The Ritz Club Former Ballroom

Although my birthday is in January, we were lucky enough to be able to still take part in the Ritz Christmas Afternoon Tea menu. In 2022, for the first time in Ritz history, afternoon tea was served in the spectacular former Ballroom in The Ritz Club. If you’re lucky enough to book these limited-time tea reservations, you’re in for a real treat! Instead of a pianist, we were treated to a three-piece band that dazzled us throughout the two-hour experience.

The Ritz Afternoon Tea Menu

The menu includes 18 different types of tea, including the famous Ritz Royal Blend, specially created for the hotel. The tea is served in silver pots, accompanied by delicate finger sandwiches with classic fillings such as smoked salmon, cucumber, and egg mayonnaise. My favourite was the egg sandwich since it was served on the fluffiest potato bun.

The scones are freshly baked and served warm with clotted cream and strawberry jam. The pièce de résistance is the exquisite selection of pastries and cakes. When the desserts first came out, I was surprised that there were only three miniature tartlets. Most of the other afternoon teas had at least four different sweets. But I didn’t expect that you ALSO get a fresh slice of cake in addition to the desserts served on the tiered tray. At the end of the meal, they push this beautiful antique cake cart around to each table. When we visited, we had the choice of chocolate hazelnut banana cake or lemon cream cake. Or you could take a slice of both! Despite being so full I thought I would burst, I chose a piece of the chocolate banana cake. And it was by far the best thing I ate all night!

Dress Code

A word of warning before heading to the Ritz. There is a strict dress code for all visitors to the tea parlour. The Ritz wants their visitors to make an event of going out for tea. And getting all dressed up is part of making that special. Men are required to wear a jacket and tie. Jeans and sportswear are not permitted for either ladies or gentlemen.

Price: £70 for adults and £48 for Children’s Afternoon Tea | From 1^st June, the price of Afternoon Tea will be from £72 for adults | Christmas Afternoon Tea is £105 per adult and £65 per child (up to 15 years old).

From converted churches to leafy greenhouses, these coffee shops are some of London’s most beautiful places to get a brew. So, whether you’re a local looking for a new spot to relax or a visitor in search of a unique experience, I’ve rounded up some of the most bewitching coffee shops in London. These places are sure to captivate your senses and provide the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Host Cafe

I stumbled upon Host Cafe by complete accident. I was searching for architectural wonders in the area and knew St. Mary Aldermary was home to the most amazing Gothic interiors. But when I stepped inside, I was shocked to find that while the church’s interior had remained the same, a tiny coffee shop was set up at the back. Visitors could enjoy a fancy latte while admiring the beautiful historic architecture inside. They had even set up a series of larger tables behind the nave where people were clacking away on their laptops, and small groups were having hushed meetings. It was official, I thought. I had found my new remote-work home away from home!

I got my coffee and sat in the pews facing the altar. Laughter and excited chatter filled the echoing interior. Church interiors usually tend to be exceptionally silent. Almost eerily so. And it was amazing to find this one filled with such life! Host Cafe is a fantastic example of how modern businesses can blend seamlessly with historic architecture.

The original church was built in the 17th century by Sir Christopher Wren, the master builder of St. Paul’s Cathedral. The original church features have been preserved through this readaptation of the space. To ensure they last another lifetime. The soaring vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and wooden pews make even a simple drip coffee break feel like a special event. This was absolutely my favourite spot in the city to come and work or just relax while watching the light stream in through those beautiful stained glass windows. A magical place to be. And the perfect escape on a rainy day.

Regency Cafe

If you’re looking to step back in time, there is perhaps no better place to visit than the Regency Cafe. This retro diner has been serving classic British breakfasts since 1946. And has become a beloved institution in London’s Westminster neighbourhood. The interior of the Regency Cafe is practically unchanged from the 40s. Bright red linoleum floors, Formica tables, red and white gingham curtains and, of course, photographs of Tottenham Hotspur football players decorate the nostalgic interior.

It’s a place packed with character and charm and always filled with locals and visitors alike. The owner is almost always behind the counter and I was so delighted by how he always remembered everyone’s name after their order. Making it feel like you’ve been there 100 times before, even on your first visit.

To my surprise, the coffee here is much more than diner brew. If you ask for milk with your coffee, they serve it using this amazing retro milk frothing machine. Turning a simple drip coffee into a fancy latte! They even top it with chocolate powder! But what sets the Regency Cafe apart is the food quality – the portions are more than generous, the ingredients are fresh, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. It’s the perfect spot for a hearty breakfast before exploring the city or for a comforting meal after a long day of sightseeing. But don’t worry if you just want to sit and enjoy the loud and bustling atmosphere.

FlatCap Coffee co.

Hidden behind the otherwise stony Victoria Street is a TRUE hidden gem of the London coffee scene; FlatCap Coffee co. FlatCap opened this tiny coffee stall in partnership with Jens Jakobsen. Jakobsen is an inventive florist and floral designer who has created a charming little garden oasis along this hidden pathway.

Jens Jakobsen transformed this previously austere concrete space into an enchanted micro-gardens. He called it “the Onion Garden.” The onion garden was inspired by the Egyptian’s worship of onions. They believed that the onion symbolized eternity as the anatomy of the onions was a circle-within-a-circle. Onions decorate the entire space along with other beautiful flowers and plant life. Everything sold in the flower shop goes to the upkeep of the garden. Visitors can sit inside the micro-garden, enjoying a coffee amongst the flowers and plants all year. They even had blankets to keep you warm in the winter. Jens wanted to help Londoners connect back to nature. And finding this spot was a lifesaver for me whenever I just wanted to zen out after a long day of exploring.

The V&A Cafe

One of the most gorgeous cafe interiors in the entire city can be found inside the Victoria and Albert museum. And getting into the museum (and cafe) is completely free. In fact, it was providing free access to these kinds of architectural works of art that inspired the founding of the V&A. And the V&A museum café was the world’s first of its kind! In 1860, architect Henry Cole wanted to create awe-inspiring spaces to draw the general public out of the Gin Palaces and into a museum where they could study applied art and sciences. After their tour, visitors could get tea and a bun or a hot meal in one of the three elaborately designed refreshment rooms. And today, you can still do the exact same.

Three Refreshment Rooms

Cole created the three styles of “refreshment rooms.” The Gamble room is my favourite, featuring these huge columns covered in fantastical ceramic tiles. The tile also covered the entire room, framing the vibrant stained glass windows arching along the back wall. Newspapers of the time called the room “…richly and gaily-adorned like the cafés of Paris.” 

The Poynter Room is inspired by Dutch ceramic art and features blue and white painted tiles. Framed inside rich wooden panels. Female students at the National Art Training School were commissioned to paint these, and it is one of the first female artist commissions ever created in England.

The final room is the Morris Room, named after the famous designer William Morris. Dark green wallpaper covered in olive leaves wraps around the walls, accented by a golden frieze of hounds chasing hares. You can stay in any of these rooms for hours. There is so much turnaround in here; no one notices if you have been there all day. The adjacent museum cafe has a lovely little coffee station where you can get any kind of fancy coffee you desire! While it is loud here, you can’t beat that view!

The Pickwick Cafe

On the southern edge of Camden, behind the bright red door at #48 Doughty Street, you’ll find the old family home of famed British writer Charles Dickens. The house is now a museum dedicated to the life of Charles Dickens. It also is a preserved example of Georgian townhomes and their furnishings from the 19th century. But hidden within the museum’s front door, at the back of the home, is a tiny little eatery called the Pickwick Cafe. While guests to the museum are free to visit the cafe at any time, museum admission is not required to enjoy a cup of coffee inside this amazing historic building.

The coffee shop features both an indoor and outdoor eating area. During the wintertime, cozy indoor tables are the perfect spot to enjoy a warm pot of tea. But when the weather is good, the outdoor courtyard is a tranquil oasis. You can just imagine Dickens himself sitting outside, dreaming up the next adventures of Oliver Twist! The Pickwick Cafe also offers delicious and indulgent cakes, warm scones with jam and light lunch options using locally sourced ingredients. I loved coming here to write and was never the only one

Attendant Coffee Roasters

Located in the heart of Fitzrovia, the Attendant is a unique and quirky coffee shop unlike any other! To find your way inside, look out for the gorgeous wrought-iron shell that leads underground. You might be shocked to find yourself standing inside an old Victorian public restroom. But don’t let that put you off! The space has been beautifully transformed into a cozy and inviting cafe that will make you want to stay for hours.

One of the first things you’ll notice when you step inside are the original Victorian ceramic urinals decorated with art nouveau-inspired floral motifs. Instead of removing them, they transformed them into a chick bar counter for visitors. Repurposing old into new is the ethos of this cafe. The walls are adorned with vintage green tiles and quirky artwork, and the warm lighting makes the entire space feel so inviting. Making it the perfect spot to catch up with friends or get some work done. The cafe is small, so if you don’t want to wait in line to get inside, try to come during off hours.

Farm Girl Notting Hill

Farm Girl is a charming and cozy coffee shop located in the trendy neighbourhood of Notting Hill in London. The cafe is situated on Portobello Road, one of the most famous streets in the area known for its vibrant market and eclectic and antique boutiques. The exterior of the cafe is adorned with leafy green plants, with the wisteria blooming bright purple in the Springtime. The interior is just as green featuring floor-to-ceiling handmade tiles framed by a whimsical mural wrapping around the ceiling. There is also a small outdoor seating area for those wanting to soak up the sunshine while sipping their coffee.

The cafe is well known for its signature “super lattes,” including rose matcha, liquid gold (with turmeric and ginger root) and their black latte (with activated charcoal!) Momo’s Garden Cafe

If you want to feel like you’re sitting outside your cozy English cottage, head to Gordon Square Park in Bloomsbury. Here in the southeast corner of the park will you find this flower-covered cottage known as Momo’s Garden Cafe. This miniature cottage is home to a tiny kiosk serving homemade treats and comforting coffee and tea. Outside the cottage are a series of small tables where you can sit under the trees. Soaking up the sun while watching locals out on the run or walking their dogs. The friendly service here is one of the main reasons I keep coming back! They cater to lots of different diets, including vegan and gluten-free and all their cakes are made fresh!

Boxcar Baker & Deli

Boxcar Baker & Deli is a charming coffee shop located in Marylebone. Upon entering, customers are greeted by a plethora of plant life emerging from every corner of the cafe. Leafy ivy is hung around the coffee bar like streamers and tendrils of plants hung from the ceiling reach down towards customers below. It’s more like relaxing inside a greenhouse than a coffee shop. The décor is natural and cozy, with wooden accents surrounding the walls. Bringing more of the outdoors in.

One of the standout features of Boxcar Baker & Deli is their commitment to fresh quality food made by baking their pastries and bread onsite! This alluring coffee cafe is just a stone’s throw from Trafalgar Square in the historic St. Martin-in-the-Fields church crypt. Yes, that’s right, you can dine and drink inside an 18th-century crypt. The entrance to the cafe is located just off Charing Cross Road, to the left of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. You’ll see a tall glass column with a winding staircase leading you down into the Crypt. There is also a small accessibility lift to help anyone in the basement which requires it.

As soon as you enter the cafe, you’ll be struck by the dramatic low lighting and spotlights that cast a warm glow to highlight the beautiful old brick vaults. Under your feet, you might be shocked that the old church tombstones are still there, curious memories of the past for you to marvel at. The menu at Café in the Crypt is diverse and offers a range of coffee drinks, teas, and light bites. You can even come here for a luxury afternoon tea at only £18 per person.

One of the special features of the Café in the Crypt is its live music program, called “Crypt Lates,” which features a range of talented musicians performing jazz, classical, and other genres.
