When I arrived, I was overjoyed to see rich boughs of Christmas greenery hanging outside the hotel’s doors. Dotted with bright red and gold ornaments. My trip to Paris was planned entirely around visiting the Parisian Christmas Markets and soaking in some holiday magic. I was delighted to be greeted with these decorations from the moment I arrived at the Hôtel Les Deux Gares. When I entered the lobby, they were in the process of getting their delivery of Christmas trees. And before I left that morning, two were already set up outside the front doot! A treat I got to enjoy throughout the rest of my stay.

From the stunning patterns, delicate decor touches and kind staff, staying at this hotel was truly one of the best parts of my trip. And I knew I had to share this wonderous place with all of you!

Location

The Hôtel Les Deux Gares is located between the Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est in Paris’ northern corner. This location set between two huge transit hubs makes it the ideal location for travellers. Transit around the city from this location was a breeze. Although the area isn’t the most popular with tourists, I found the trade-off of quick access to the station in the morning well worth it. 

10th Arrondissement

The neighbourhood around the hotel is called the 10th Arrondissement. An “arrondissement” is the French term for the various districts that make up a city as large as Paris. While the 10th doesn’t make any lists of the “best neighbourhoods in Paris,” it’s one of the multicultural neighbourhoods where you can find actual Parisians living and working. It is not just a touristy microcosm. But a bustling district also dubbed “Little India,” where delicious curry shops can be found. While it might not be home to top-tier attractions, some true hidden gems are located less than 10 minutes from the hotel door. For more about the neighbourhood, continue reading below.

Rooms

Every single one of the rooms inside the hotel is a colourful and rich tapestry of patterns and textiles. And stepping into your room is a wonderful surprise to see which design style will be your own throughout your stay. One of my favourite things about the Hôtel Les Deux Gares as a solo traveller is their single room pricing. As one person, you often end up having to book a room meant for two and paying the same as a couple. But here, they have Single Rooms (approx. €170/night) that still feature a large queen or king bed. You save about 10-20 euros a night. While that’s not a fortune, it does cover the cost of a decent meal in Paris, and any savings is A-OK by me!

Single Room

My room was decorated in pink, green and pale blue art deco patterned wallpaper. Accented with the most fabulous yellow pops of colour throughout. It honestly just made me smile to walk into my room. I usually spend so much of my time when travelling outside my hotel room. But here I found myself missing my bedroom when I was away. I even made a point to bring home a takeout dinner one night just so I could enjoy my time inside the room!

The bed linen was plush, and the pillows were super soft. I love having a bath, so I was slightly sad to find the single rooms only come with a shower option. But the shower was so pretty, I didn’t even mind. There were plenty of toiletries provided, which was great as I had left all mine behind. As a Canadian, the heated towel rack is always a little treat to find as those aren’t standard in North America.

The View

My room was located on the second floor facing the train station right beside a busy footpath. I am SUPER sensitive to noise. So I was SURE I was going to be bothered by that proximity. But, to my surprise, I never heard a peep. They’ve really outdone themselves on sound insulation, to be sure. 

But in terms of a view, I was disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, I love having a good view of the train station, that’s not my complaint. I didn’t expect an Eiffel Tower view or anything like that. But behind almost level with the outdoor footpath, I didn’t feel comfortable leaving the curtains open. So I kept them closed and missed out on admiring the view. I wouldn’t have been as bothered if I had been on a higher level. I love people-watching and transporting, so when it was quieter at night, I would sneak a peak now and then. But when you feel the people outside are close enough to walk into your living room, that’s a little too much for me. I did appreciate that the windows opened up to a small Juliet balcony which would have been great had I come during the Spring or Summer.

Standard | Superior | Suites | Family Rooms

In addition to the single rooms, they, of course, also have Standard (approx. €179/night) and Superior (approx. €224/night) rooms. The difference between the two being the Superior room guarantees a king-size bed and has a slightly larger footprint. There are also Suites (approx. €305/night) which provide space for four people with a bed and pull out sofa. The Family Rooms (approx. €359/night), which are adjoining spaces with two beds and a pull-out sofa, fit up to six people. So if you’re travelling with a large family, this is a great option! Because the hotel is on the smaller side, and for obvious reasons is very popular, it’s best to book your rooms as far in advance as possible.

Design

Aside from a convenient location, what many people really come here for is the aesthetics. It truly feels like stepping into a Wes Anderson movie set. The English interior designer, Luke Edward Hall, oversaw the hotel’s design. Hall was inspired by the Art Deco period and combined those styles with almost neon-hued colours. Parisian architecture can be rather austere, with minimal colour. So walking inside this hotel, you are overwhelmed with the vibrancy met indoors. The hotel opened after the Covid pandemic, and the bright colours almost feel like a response to the pandemic. As they make you feel alive and excited to be travelling again.

The lively decor makes even the small rooms an absolute treasure box. It emulates Hall’s idea of walking into an eccentric Parisian’s bohemian apartment. The blend of patterns, textiles and auction items feels like a lovingly curated personal collection. Like staying with your cooky aunt who moonlights as an artist and teaches yoga.

Breakfast

Without a doubt, the lobby and breakfast nook area is the most fantastically decorated parts of the hotel. And it is here that you can join the small collection of guests for breakfast every morning. Breakfast is served from 7:15 am to 10:15 am, so whether you’re an early bird or late riser, you can start your day off right. The breakfast costs 18 euros unless you purchased a room package that included it with your stay. While pricey and something I usually skip, it feels pretty standard in terms of hotel breakfast pricing these days. But truthfully, I would just hit up patisseries instead if they’re open.

Café Les Deux Gares

Because the area is a bit lacking in terms of authentic French cafes, the hotel has opened its own Café Les Deux Gares just across the street. Like any good French bistro, the menu is handwritten on the chalkboard daily to feature fresh, local and seasonal dishes. Entrees range from €12-15 and main plates are about €25-€35. They also have a great wine list if you want to come here simply for a nightcap and enjoy the gorgeous ambiance.

The highlight of this cafe is the over-the-top trompe l’oeil tortoiseshell ceiling made by artist Pauline Leyravaud. Pair this with the marble-topped tables, antique wooden chairs and delicate upholstery, and you’ve got one of the most gorgeous interiors in the 10th Arrondissement.

Fitness Room and Sauna

I’m not one to go to the gym, even back at home, but even I was tempted to do something in the fitness room because of how darn adorable the wallpaper was down here. While I skipped the non-urge to go for a run, I did partake in the sauna. Since winter travelling can get pretty chilly, there is nothing better to get those bones warmed up than a nice hot sauna. This is just one example of those little amenities that make a big difference. Despite visiting on a busy Christmas weekend, the hotel was quiet, and I never had an issue with space in the sauna.

A Note about the Neighbourhood

For transparency’s sake, I am outlining a few details about the area around the hotel that some of the more prominent online outlets have failed to mention. Many of these reviews were done by writers who perhaps didn’t stay the night but instead came, checked out the interior and left. 

I’ve read a few reviews from sites like TripAdvisor that detail how guests felt the area was dingy, without many restaurants, and there are groups of men hanging around 24/7. Firstly, the area never felt dingy to me; it was just Paris. Which I know to some people, is often defined as being “dirty and smelly.” But the 10th Arrondissement is no better or worse for this than other busy areas of Paris. While it’s definitely not the nicest or most picturesque, you get what you’d expect from any city around the central train station. 

The idea that there is a lack of restaurants in the area is just incorrect. Perhaps these reviewers meant there is a lack of restaurants they deem “familiar,” as many of the popular spots around here are Indian curry houses or Bangladeshi bars. Not wall-to-wall chic Parisian cafes and bistros. But as mentioned above, the hotel-owned restaurant across the street quickly fills that void if that’s solely what you’re looking for. 

Safety

In terms of there being men in the area 24/7, that part is true. Even late at night, you’d find large groups of men standing outside on the streets. I was there as a solo female traveller, and although I noticed this, I never felt uncomfortable. Lots of these people were clearly cab drivers waiting or on break. Or just locals out and about. Just be aware and stay vigilant, but I never felt unsafe. It’s very similar to areas around East London. If you feel concerned, avoid walking around here late at night. Which is easily avoided by taking an uber to the hotel.

Generally, I advise avoiding the area north of the station to steer clear of the more “dangerous” areas. The southern part of the 10th borders the 3rd Arrondissement, which is one of the poshest parts of the city.

Personally, I found areas around Sacre Coeur where there are tons of tourists much more “dangerous” as there are plenty of pickpockets or people out to scam you. So while some neighbourhoods look more dangerous, the busy tourist hubs actually have the most crime against tourists. So take all that to heart when choosing your Parisian destination.

Additional Points of Interest

While the 10th Arrondissement isn’t home to the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower, there are some real gems to be found in this neck of the woods that you’d never otherwise make the time to come and see. But being in the neighbourhood, you’re gifted with them at your front door.

Marché Saint-Quentin

One of my favourite things to do in Paris is EAT. Obviously. And in my opinion, some of the best food in the city is found in the marketplace. The Marche Saint-Quentin is located just five minutes down the street from the hotel. This gorgeous market was built in the 19th century and features beautiful wrought-iron beams and large glass windows. The market is home to some incredible butchers, an amazing cheesemonger, fruit vendors and, my favourite, a gorgeous florist. If you’ve been reading the blog for years, you’ll know I love to buy a fresh bouquet of flowers. It’s one of the first things I do when I arrive in a new city. To add some scent and sparkle to my hotel room.

Canal Saint Martin

Just 10 minutes east of the hotel, you can wander over to the Canal Saint Martin. This peaceful canal is now a hipster hotspot. The perfect spot for walking with a good cup of coffee in the morning. The wrought-iron bridges set against iconic Parisian architecture makes for some of the most beautiful viewing spots. And you’ll be surprised to find that here you have the city almost all to yourself. Which in Paris is a rarity.

Maison Bayat

Speaking of coffee! I’m an early bird; I’m frequently awake as early as 7 am when travelling as I’m just too excited to sleep in. But Paris, like many other European cities, awakens pretty late. Thankfully for me, Maison Bayat was just 5 minutes west of the hotel. While you might be searching for “coffee” in Paris, it’s best to look for a Patisserie. Here you’ll find the best of the best Parisian pastries to start your morning off right!B ut they also sell delicious coffee to go or to sit while dining inside. 

Bouillon Chartier Gare de l’Est

If you’re looking for somewhere to eat that’s cheap, fast and beautiful, you need to check out Bouillon Chartier Gare de l’Est. Bouillon Chartier is a chain of brasseries in Paris that focus on simple dining with an authentic Parisian menu. Best of all, they’re located inside the most incredible historic interiors. 

While some might complain the food quality is not always the most stellar, personally, it is reliable if you know what to order. The entrees are always my favourite. A great place to try escargot, oeuf du mayonnaise, terrine (incredible), an avocado shrimp cocktail, or a simple rosette of Lyon. Avoid the Boeuf Bougineon (it’s pretty bland), but if you want to order a full meal, try the roast chicken and fries. At less than 10 euroes its super juiucy and deliciuos. I ALWAYS recommend the chestnut puree with whipped cream for dessert. Especially in the wintertime. Chestnut puree is a french staple and a unique choice you won’t find anywhere else.

Jardin Villemin

For a relaxing escape from the stone facades, you are just a few minutes away from the Jardin Villemin. The garden was created in 1977 on the site of the former Villemin military hospital, which closed in 1968. It was named after the famous doctor Jean-Antoine Villemin. The original hospital was built to treat the wounded returning from WWI and WWII. The original stone entrance to the military hospital can be found along the rue des Récollets, which now serves as an entry into the park.

Passage Brady

19th-century covered arcades are one of the hidden treasures of Paris. These are called “Passages couverts,” and during the 1800s, there were over 130 of them found throughout the city. But after Haussmann renovated Paris in 1853, many disappeared, leaving only a few dozen original arcades throughout the city. So it’s special to find one only a few doors down in the 10th Arrondissement. Today Passage Brady still retains the original iron and glass-covered ceiling and features several Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi restaurants inside.

Access to Big Attractions

Despite not being in the tourist hub, the 10th still provides easy access to the city’s most popular attractions. And for me, being within such short walking distance of Montmartre (my favourite neighbourhood) is a bonus! Montmartre accommodation can be pretty pricey, even for a basic hotel, so I love staying somewhere close by without the big price tag.

All in all, I cannot wait to return to Hôtel Les Deux Gares! Next time, I’m planning on reserving that room with a bathtub that looks out over the city! Nowhere better to sit, enjoy the views, drink a good glass of French wine and plan out the next day’s adventures.

And while there are plenty of other hotels in the area, Casa Decu is truly such a wonderful place at a surprisingly reasonable price! This kind of boutique hotel is a sparkling diamond that will make your entire trip all the more of a relaxing retreat.

Location

Casa Decu is located in the upscale and tourist-friendly neighbourhood of La Condesa, just steps from Avenida Amsterdam. I have lots of different guides all about La Condesa as it is my absolute favourite barrio in Mexico City. La Condesa is safe, historic, has a fantastic coffee and cafe culture and incredible restaurants hidden around every leaf-covered corner. This is the perfect place to stay for anyone who is visiting the city for the first time.

The Vision

Casa Decu‘s philosophy is to create spaces where guests can easily enjoy long-term stays. This means an array of amenities to make it, so you almost don’t want to leave! Even if you’re only in town for a few days, you still have access to these extras. This includes a kitchenette, sofa and dining area in even the smallest and lowest-priced rooms. They believe these additions allows travellers to feel more like a local than just a tourist. And it totally works. While I love the idea of Airbnb, I’ve had so many problems in the past and even ethically it’s not the greatest option to help develop the economy of the place you’re visiting. That’s why options like Casa Decu are great as they feel like staying inside a home but with the comfort of a hotel experience.

Rooms & Suites

Casa Decu only has 27 rooms, so they are technically classified as a boutique hotel. They offer four different options for your stay. The cheapest is the Executive Room with a double bed, separate bathroom and kitchenette. The Junior Suite is slightly larger and features a queen or double bed with a separate bathroom and Living room. The Superior Suite is double the size of the Junior, so you can really feel like you can spread out, but it has the same amenities. The largest option is the Duplex Suite which actually contains a joint with a second bedroom with two independent bathrooms! The largest rooms on the first floor even have a small, enclosed terrace, but these rooms are first come, first serve, and you cannot guarantee one.

My Room

I booked the Executive Room but was upgraded upon arrival to a Junior Suite upon arrival. The great thing about small hotels is they have a little more control over the experience so you will frequently get upgraded if they have the space. The addition of the kitchenette was one of the main reasons I booked the hotel. I adore having a small kitchen since I always buy SO many drinks and love having them kept cool to enjoy when I get back to the hotel after a hotel day. Nothing is better when you get home after a long day than to kick off your shoes and relax for the night with a refreshing local beverage.

My room looked out over the inner courtyard. I was concerned this might be noisy but at night it was totally silent. And I loved sitting at the dinner table watching people come and go. It was like looking out over onto a quiet side street. The bed was lush and comfy and there was lots of space to hang and store my clothes.

Bathroom

The bathroom is very simplistic and some might say a little overly so. I love a bath, so anytime I don’t have that option I’m a bit bummed. But bathtubs are SUPER rare to find in Mexico City so I’ve become used to very rarely finding one. The sink is located outside the separate shower and toilet stall which is bonus if you need to brush your teeth while someone is in the shower. Despite the shower room being so plain and rustic, the water pressure was amazing and I didn’t have any issues with the temperature.

Pet-Friendly

The hotel is divided into two halves, with one area dedicated to medium and small-breed pets! I didn’t hear any noise from the dogs but I sure did have a good time petting those good girls and boys when I ran into them in the morning.

Design

The hotel is located inside a renovated Art Deco apartment building. The original structure dates back to the late 1930s but obviously, the interior has been up hauled for the modern era. But the designers kept so many of the amazing vintage elements that make the building feel like a piece of history. Mexico City, and especially La Condesa, is home to some very unique art deco buildings so getting to stay inside one of them is really special. There is not a corner of the building that doesn’t feel like a great spot for a photo-op!

Rooftop & Breakfast

Although an included breakfast is never that important to me (as I prefer heading right out onto the town to seek out a new coffee shop) I was blown away by the gorgeous rooftop terrace. Up here is where you found the included Continental breakfast every morning. The provided breakfast itself is very basic, but you could order additional dishes at an additional cost extra. That being said, most coffee shops in the area open later than I usually prefer so it was SUPER convenient to be able to wake up and have a coffee on the terrace.

While simple, the breakfast options were great and there was something for everyone. From toast and cereal to fresh fruit, hot pastries and yogurt it was a nice spread to get something in your stomach before heading out for your day. And if you want to save some money having an included breakfast in your hotel stay means you don’t need to spend anything additional in the morning.

The rooftop terrace is actually open 24/7, so you can grab your own snacks and head up here to enjoy some downtime in a semi-private space any time during the day.

Gym

There is a gym right beside the breakfast bar, but as someone who never works out on vacation, I didn’t use it. I saw some people using the gym while I was up on the terrace relaxing, and the machines were new and looked very spiffy.

Overall Review

Overall, I LOVED staying at the Casa Decu. When I booked the hotel, it was because I was staying in Mexico City as a sool traveller and just looking for a cheap hotel to stay at. And I was blown away by how gorgeous this place was! My husband dropped in quickly to see the room, as he was on his way out of town and was devastated he didn’t get the chance to stay here with me! So we literally CANNOT wait to come back to experience the place together. The kindness of the staff is also worth mentioning as they were so helpful to both me and everyone I saw interact with the front desk. I really hope you add this to your list of places to check out next time you’re booking a trip to Mexico City!

La Condesa

La Condesa is one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in Mexico City, and it is my absolute favourite place to stay. Condesa is located just southeast of Chapultepec Park. This hip neighbourhood is where you can find some of the best cafes and restaurants. But the real draw for me of this neighbourhood is the green spaces. The area is also known as the “lungs of the city,” with lush parks and tree-lined avenues around every corner. Parque México and Parque España both have beautifully landscaped gardens and fountains. They make for the best little escape from the rest of the world.

The architecture around here is phenomenal, with the largest collections of Art Deco buildings after Miami. On Sundays, the streets of Condesa come alive with live music and street vendors. A large portion of Condesa is residential with many beautiful apartment buildings and single-family homes. This allows the neighbourhood to feel like a little community and not just as a touristy area. The family atmosphere also means it is a safe place to stay. Important for first-time visitors to feel comfortable.

Top Hotel for Great Amenities: Maria Condesa Hotel $$

Maria Condesa is a great mid-range option in La Condesa. The location is great, right in the heart of the La Condesa art deco area. The rooms are super stylish, and the suites come with a street view and walk-in saunas. A huge perk to staying here would be the restaurant on the terrace.

Top Hotel for a Home Away from Home: Casa Dovela $$$

Casa Dovela is a Boutique-House featuring contemporary duplexes and a beautiful one-bedroom suite. It’s a cross between a luxury home and a boutique hotel located along the art-deco streets of Condesa. The original building was left abandoned after the 1985 earthquake-like so many other residences in Condesa. But seeing its developmental potential, the hotel owners snapped it up.

They nabbed it just as the revitalization of Condesa was starting to take place. Aspects of the original architecture were preserved, but many parts of the building were modernized for aesthetics and comfort. Staying here in the heart of the neighbourhood, with a playground you can see from your window, you feel embedded into the community. Just outside your front door, a market pops up on Tuesdays where you can buy fresh produce and cook it up right at home.

Centro Histórico or Historic Centre

The historic center of Mexico City is located in the city’s heart. It is home to many of the country’s most popular tourist attractions. The historic centre was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. It covered an area of about 450 hectares. Inside you’ll find the main plaza or Zocalo, along with all of its historical buildings. You can spend days exploring this neighbourhood without getting bored! The main downside to staying inside the historic centre is also the reason it’s such a wonderful place to stay. And that’s all the attractions, and therefore all the toursits.

Although being located close to all the historical sights gives you lots to do, it does feel like staying inside an amusement park. And when the sun goes down, the side streets are dead quiet as no locals live in the area. It is mainly a shopping and tourist district. Getting in and out of the area is also slightly problematic as many streets are closed to vehicle traffic. Which again is a huge plus when you are walking around but a downside when you arrive in a taxi with your luggage. So just be prepared to be dropped off a few streets away from your hotel and walk over to your destination.

Best Hotel for History Lovers: Gran Hotel Ciudad De Mexico $$$

The Gran Hotel Ciudad De Mexico is a 5-star hotel with elegant rooms and a great location bordering Zocalo square. Some of the rooms even have a view of the large square. The highlight of the hotel is the grandiose Tiffany stained glass ceiling. It looms over you as you enter framed by the art deco wrought irons balconies that surround the lobby. You can soak in the splendour while sipping a coffee inside the lobby cafe. This is the perfect luxury option in a prime location. The hotel also offers a fabulous terrace restaurant overlooking the square if you didn’t get a room with a view.

Best Hotel for a Budget: Hampton Inn & Suites Mexico City $

If you’re looking for a budget version of the Gran Hotel, look no further than the Hampton Inn & Suites. The hotel is located inside a beautifully restored historic building complete with architectural styling dating back to the 1800s. Inside you’ll find simple yet comfortable and spacious rooms with modern conveniences. Like the Gran Hotel Ciudad, this hotel also features a six-storey atrium with a stained glass ceiling. Albeit not as impressive, it is nevertheless a stunning addition to welcome you inside.

Zona Rosa / Colonia Juárez

The Zona Rosa (Pink Zone) is located on the south side of Paseo de la Reforma Avenue. Found between Insurgentes Avenue and Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas. The area saw great expansion during the rise of Porfiriato. The Porfiriato is the time period between the late 19th and early 20th centuries when General Porfirio Díaz ruled. The previously poor neighbourhood was transformed into an elegant community.

Today, the Zona Rosa is renowned for its nightlife. It’s a favourite place for tourists due to the wide variety of venues in just a few blocks. It is a place where one can find many bars, dance clubs and restaurants. This area has also become important for the gay community of the city. Hotel Casa González has been operating inside the Zona Rosa for almost 100 years! The current owner’s grandfather built the two original homes in the mid-1920s. They were later joined together to create this unique hotel. As the hotel is located in front of the English Embassy, and just one block from the American Embassy, the area is frequented by local police officers. This is a great place to stay if you want to feel very safe. When you step through the tall gates entering the hotel, you are met with a secret garden oasis. Hotel Carlota is an affordable boutique hotel was built inside an old house. It transformed the interior space to honour Mexico City. A city filled with culture, design, art, memories and modernity. The rooms are stylish, and the entire hotel has an indoor/outdoor open-air floor plan. Stepping out of your room, you can look down at the amazing pool below. Perfect for those hot, humid days.

San Rafael

Just north of the Zona Rosa is the San Rafael neighbourhood. The area features beautiful colonial architecture, 19th-century mansions and art deco apartment buildings. San Rafael was once known as the “Broadway of Mexico,” where you’d find live music and performances. Today you can still see various mid-century theatres and art galleries popping up all over the place. This area is a great place to stay if you want to remain close to the Historic Centre while not being overwhelmed by the tourists. Here you can still feel that local sense of community.

It is considered almost like the Times Square of Mexico City. The streets in this area are straight and wide, which gives this area an air of sophistication. On either side of the road, you’ll stare up, up and up. Looking in awe at the amazing glass works of modern architecture. The beauty of staying in the Reforma / Juarez district is you have easy access to all the most popular neighbourhoods like; Centro Historico, Polanco, Roma, and Condesa.

The grand Paseo de La Reforma, which dominates the area, is lined with monuments and some of the most unbelievable modern architecture found anywhere in the city. On Sundays, the entire street is closed to motorists and is used by pedestrians and cyclists. Street vendors come out along with artisans selling arts and crafts on blankets on the sidewalk. It feels like a bustling festival that explodes onto the street every week!

Colonia Roma / La Roma

Colonia Roma also called La Roma, (or simply Roma), is one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in Mexico City. The Colonia was designed as an upper-class neighbourhood in the early twentieth century. But after the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, the district quickly became a lower-class slum. No one seemed to want to take on its redevelopment right after the quake.

In the early 2000s, restaurant owners moved into the cheap rental units in the area. And slowly they began to revitalize the district. What these entrepreneurs found were some of the most architecturally stunning buildings in the city. Over the last 20 years, it has become once more one of the most upscale areas of the city. And with the best food found anywhere! If you’re a foodie, this needs to be your home base!

Walking around the neighbourhood in the daytime, you can admire the tranquil, ivy-draped historic homes. Browse the eclectic shops and art galleries. But with the setting of the sun, you’ll find the most unique nightlife. Be sure not to miss the traditional food vendors which pop up all over the streets at night. Their brightly painted signs and delicious-smelling food wafting all along the streets.

Coyoacan

Coyoacan is a southern suburb of Mexico City. It is known for its colourful historic center, which has preserved much of its colonial-era architecture. The district was an independent Aztec town before the Spanish conquest in 1521. And being located away from the centre the neighbourhood remained largely undeveloped until the 20th century. There is a slowness to this part of town which I love. A restful atmosphere that contrasts the explosive energy of Mexico City’s business district. This is where I always come to relax. To make my way to their various parks and gardens to read or paint. Whiling away the sunny days under the umbrellas of chic cafes and fantastic restaurants.

This was also the neighbourhood where Frida Kahlo was born and died. It was also where she lived with her husband, Diego Rivera. Frida’s fingerprint is embedded into the essence of this part of town. And her colourful and creative personality is reflected on every street corner and plaza you visit.

Polanco

Located in the northwest and above the Bosque de Chapultepec, Polanco is an upscale residential and business district. The leafy side streets are dotted with Spanish Colonial Revival mansions and luxe apartments. At the same time, the main drags are filled with luxury brands and upscale international restaurants. As it is one of the most expensive areas in the city, Polanco is also very safe. So this neighbourhood would be ideal for families planning to visit Mexico City. Be prepared to spend a pretty penny in this area! But for those looking for extravagance, you’ve come to the right place!

Best Hotel for Architecture Buffs: Camino Real Polanco Mexico $$

When it opened it was famous for combining modern features with shapes clearly reminiscent of prehispanic pyramids. Elements from these merge together to create an architectural masterpiece! There is something so nostalgic about the 60’s decor, which is so atmospheric. Plus, as it is not a high-end luxury hotel, the rooms come at a reasonable price for the area! If you have a little more cash to spend, book one of the suites as the retro decor is incredible. The view out towards the best architectural features of the hotel is wonderfully highlighted.

Bets Hotel for Interior Design: Orchid House Polanco $$$

Nothing feels more like Mexican royalty than a stay at the Orchid House Polanco. The Orchid House provides visitors with the exquisite feeling of being at home with the comforts of a hotel. Hidden away inside a 100-year-old mansion, the hotel is filled with blue and coloured stained glass, antique barro floors hand-painted with images of Don Quijote and Shakespeare. Ryokans are the best place to recharge, so they make a great stopover in the middle of your trip to help re-energize your body and soul. We opted to stay in a Ryokan in Kyoto. It was the perfect place to reset from the busy atmosphere of Tokyo. The days we spent in the Ryokan were some of the most peaceful of our entire trip. We even opted to spend almost an entire day in our room as it was just that comfy. We read our books, drank tea and sat in the zen garden, watching the locals walk by on their way to and from the center of the city. Although there are a few Ryokans in Tokyo, for the most part, Ryokans are found in the countryside, where the ambiance seems to suit the location.

What is a Ryokan

A Ryokan is a traditional Japanese guesthouse. They are found inside typically historic wooden buildings, usually low to the ground with one a few storeys. Walking inside, they are decorated with straw tatami mats, paper sliding doors and screens, an onsite onsen, and a beautiful garden. Each of these items combines to form the mould of the Ryokan experience.

History of the Ryokan

The first Ryokans were free boarding houses to give people a place of refuge from the elements. Back then, there were no highways or set routes for people to travel, so often, pilgrims would find themselves sleeping outside under the stars. Buddist monks set up these rooming houses to help the less fortunate.

The Samurai Influence

Years later, in the Edo period, Ryokans were places of sanctuary for travelling samurai. This is where the ideas of ceremonial meals and tea services came into popularity. Samurai were honoured warriors and hosting them in your home was considered a great privilege. As a host, you wanted to do everything you could to keep them happy and entertained. The samurai would dine and drink sake late into the night, knowing inside the Ryokan they were safe from attack. One of the reasons for Ryokans’ architectural designs with low ceilings and narrow staircases was to ensure it was difficult to swing a sword. This was done to ensure the samurai respected the sanctuary and no fighting ensued inside.

Modern Day

When the economy began to boom in Japan and roads were built, more and more people began travelling. One of the most popular destinations were various hot springs (onsens) around the country. To service these travellers, Ryokans started opening their doors to everyone, and the modern idea of guesthouses was established. But the Ryokans continued to serve food and drink to their guests, just as they had to samurais long before them. And the Buddist ideals of peace inside the walls of the Ryokan also cemented itself into the history of Ryokans forever.

How Much Does it Cost?

While Ryokans are on the pricier side of accommodations, there are a variety of types of Ryokans to choose from. You can find historic Ryokans, luxury Ryokans and even economy family-run establishments. Each different type comes at a different price level. The economy Ryokans don’t offer elaborate meal service, so the price is significantly reduced. These still have all the amenities and stunning interiors. They are great options if you want to experience a Ryokan without breaking the bank. The luxury Ryokans on the other hand are a once in a lifetime experience. Sometimes with a private, in-room onsen to enjoy outside with stunning views of the countryside around you.

Shoe Etiquette

The most important rule to keep in mind when checking into your Ryokan is to remove your shoes. When you walk into the Ryokan, there will be a large cabinet by the door where you can store your outdoor shoes. You will be presented with a pair of indoor slippers to wear inside. But even these slippers must be removed when you enter your tatami floored room. Ryokans are made of precious and delicate materials so doing your part to preserve them is very important. If your Ryokan has an outdoor area or outdoor onsen, you will find they might offer outdoor wooden sandals to wear as well.

Style of Rooms

Walking into your room, you will immediately be blown away by how different it looks from any other hotel room you’ve ever stayed inside. Staying at a Ryokan is unlike any other hotel experience. Guests typically stay in tatami mat rooms with futons for sleeping, and traditional sliding doors called shoji. The rooms are designed to be simple and uncluttered, creating a peaceful atmosphere.

Living/Dining Room

Laid out on the floor of the living/dining room is a low table and set of chairs called “zaisu.” Since the tatami mats are delicate, sharp furniture legs could not be placed on top. So the legless chair called the zaisu was invented. In the winter, some rooms will come with a kotatsu table. These tables have a large blanket that sits on top with a heat source underneath. Perfect for keeping you warm as you sit at the table. Since Ryokans are a popular escape, these really make your stay more comfortable even in the winter.

To complete your dining room, you’ll always find a tea set for your convenience. This means you can have a warm cup of tea any time of the day in the comfort of your room.

The Bedroom Transformation

When you first enter your room, you might be wondering, “where is the bed?“. You’ll look all over, but you won’t find one. Instead of a separate bedroom and living room, Ryokans combine the two into one transformative space. When you are out in the evening, the staff will come into your room and set up your bed for you. I always try to hit upon the onsen in the evening to allow the staff some time to make this change.

Hidden away either in the closet or nearby storage area is a Japanese futon laid out on the floor, and the table and chairs are moved away for the evening. This change will happen like magic as if performed by elves or other enchanting creatures. Unlike most hotel rooms which only have a bedroom, it’s really nice to be able to have both a living room, dining room and bedroom all to yourself. Ryokans give you this but without requiring an enormous amount of space.

Japanese Futons

One of the most significant differences in the accommodation inside Ryokans compared to a normal hotel is the bedding. Instead of a traditional bed frame and box spring, Ryokans feature sleeping futons. But these are not the western-style futons you might imagine (those fold-down couches we all had from Ikea in college). These futons are fold-up mattresses covered in a thick duvet. The tatami mats on the floor provide a slightly softer base for the futon. So it doesn’t feel like sleeping on a hard floor. I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable they were! The reason for the futons is that they are so pliable and can be stored during the day to increase your living space. This is not just something which is done in a Ryokan but all over Japan, where homes are very small.

Yukatas

Inside your room or picked up when you enter the hotel, you will find your yukata. Yukatas are called “summer kimonos” or “casual kimonos” as they are made of a lighter fabric than traditional ceremonial kimonos. Yukatas were initially designed in indigo and white fabrics to distinguish them from kimonos. Wearing your yukata around the Ryokan is another way of shifting your mindset into a more relaxed state of being.

If you don’t know how to put on your yukata, look around the room as there is usually a little handout that will instruct how to put it on. Otherwise, you can always ask the staff to help out. One of the most important things to remember is to make sure you belt the yukata left side over right. This is important as the reverse symbolizes death in Buddhism. We loved wearing our Yukatas around and I even ended up buying my own to wear when I got back to Canada!

Onsen

The onsite onsen is one of the best parts of your stay in a Ryokan. At least it was for me! An ‘Onsen‘ is the Japanese word for hot spring. Since Japan is a volcanically active country, there are thousands of natural onsens all over the place. Many Ryokans have taken advantage of this and created bathing pools around the natural springs. It is thought that the minerals in the volcanic waters provide many different health benefits from muscle relaxation to help with insomnia and stress. But for me, the best part is a foot soak after a long day of walking around a new city.

Onsen Etiquette

Depending on the type of Ryokan you’re staying at, there may be shared/public onsens. Or you might be lucky enough to have an onsen right in your room! But there are also Ryokans with onsite onsens that allow you to book a time to experience a private bathing session. If you have never been to an onsen before, there are a few essential things to keep in mind.

Public Onsens have a Male and Female Area

When you arrive at a public Ryokan onsen, you will take off your shoes and enter one of two different change rooms. These change rooms lead into the male and females areas of the onsen. They are generally marked in Japanese, so you can always ask your hotel attendant for help if they are not marked in English.

You MUST be Naked

Once you enter the change room, grab yourself a locker. Usually, your hotel will provide you with a towel to dry yourself after you’re finished. Put your drying towel, yukata and all the rest of your belonging and clothes inside. And yes, I mean all of your clothes! No bathing suits allowed. You enter the onsen wearing nothing but your birthday suit. The one item you are allowed to bring into the onsen area is a small “modest towel”.

Although going into a public bath naked might seem pretty intimidating, it’s just one of those things you’ll get used to. Everyone else is naked too. It’s not only you. Public bathing is so common in Japan, so the locals aren’t phased. Don’t worry about feeling like people are looking awkwardly at you – they aren’t.

Modesty Towel

The one item you have with you to help with those initial nerves is your modesty towel. This small hand towel is meant to hold over your private parts for an extra little bit of coverage if you’re shy. This is never to be dipped right into the water, and you must place it on your head to keep it out of the water once you get into the water.

Take a Shower First

Before getting into the onsen, you must take a shower. But these are not western-style stand-up showers. Instead, you’ll usually find a long bar of low shower heads with little stool beside them. You will sit on the chair and wash with the shampoo and body wash provided. No need to bring anything in yourself, it will all be there ready for you.

No Phones in Public Onsens

This might not need to be said, but since public onsens are, well, public, there are no phones allowed inside. This is to ensure no one is taking photos. Take this time without your devices to unwind and disconnect. Private onsens on the other hand are fair game since you are there in private. But I would still advise you to take a few photos only and spend the majority of your time in peace and quiet.

Tattoos

About 50% of public onsens do not allow you to come into the baths if you have tattoos. While this is an antiquated rule, for many traditional onsens, it still comes into effect. If you opt for a private onsen, you won’t need to worry about this rule. I always advise you ask your hotel operator before booking to ensure you won’t be disappointed when you arrive.

Other rules

• Never put your head under the water as this will contaminate the water
• Don’t wash your body inside the onsen; that is what the shower area is for
• If you have long hair, put it up in a high pony-tail to keep it out of the water
• The onsen isn’t for swimming and definitely no diving!
• Keep your voice to a low volume as an onsen’s experience is supposed to be a relaxing one

Kaiseki-ryori

In most Ryokans, dinner service will be included in your stay. Get dressed in your yukata and prepare yourself for a lovely meal. The meal will either be served in your room or in the communal dining area depending on the type of Ryokan. Public dining rooms are obviously less expensive than in-room service meals. When you check-in, the host will ask you what time you would like to eat. There are usually two or three meal times ranging from 6 pm to 8 pm. 

Kaiseki-ryori is the name of the meal served at the Ryokan. Kaiseki-ryori is considered to be the height of Japanese cuisine and fine dining. It is a multi-course meal, served on elegant lacquered and ceramic dishes. Each plate is laid out like a painting. The design of the platting is meant to enhance the taste of the food. The food on offer will be seasonal and local to the area. It is intended to connect your experience in the Ryokan to the natural environment around you. Common elements of the Kaiseki-ryori include miso soup, hot pot, fresh fish and, of course, tea and sake.

Breakfast

Many Ryokans also offer a traditional Japanese breakfast. If you have the option of adding this to your stay, I would implore you to opt for it. If you’ve never had a traditional breakfast before, this is your chance. A traditional Japanese breakfast includes seasoned rice, miso soup, grilled fish, tofu and eggs.

While Ryokans are a splurge, without a doubt, it’s important to remember all the different things included in your stay, as laid out in this post. Ryokans really are more than the sum of their parts. They are places that put your body and spirit into a different mindset, like a hard reset to the stress and exhaustion that travelling can bring. It was one of my favourite parts of my first trip to Japan, and I hope you find it is the same for you as well. I say luckily since I ended up having one of my worst days of vertigo while in Prague and being able to rest and recuperate in such a beautiful environment definitely helped. What otherwise is a pretty miserable experience was made all the more bearable by staying in such a special place. Usually, you aren’t in your hotel room all day when travelling, so my almost full day in the hotel really gave me the chance to appreciate all the little details and comforts this place provides its guests.

Location

One of the most important aspects of a hotel after comfort, is always location. Being able to pop out of your place in the morning and get the right to exploring the city is super convenient. It’s only a 10-minute walk to the Old Town square and 12-minutes to the Charles Bridge. But the hotel is located just enough outside the busy tourist centre that it feels more like living in an authentic Czech neighbourhood. And you don’t have the loud voices of crowds of travellers waking you up at all hours.

History

Hotel Elite Prague, located along a peaceful cobblestone street, is set inside a 14th-century old monastery. So much of the old building has been preserved, so you feel like you are staying in a piece of Prague’s history. In 1723 the building was used as a guesthouse during the coronation of King Charles VI. Everywhere you look it feels like there is a story to be told and history is simply steeped inside the walls of this hotel.

Rooms

There is something about staying inside a piece of history that adds a spectacularly unique touch to your experience. The dimly lit hallways feel romantic, like you staying inside an ancient manor house. 

The renovations made to bring the 14th-century building up to modern standards are pretty seamless. Each room provides all the mod-cons you’d expect from a hotel. The bathrooms are clean while still being a bit modest, which is much more budget-friendly. It’s always lovely that a hotel with this much history is also financially accessible to more travellers. So often, historic hotels are pretty pricey and therefore not an option for many people. But the Hotel Elite tries its best to scale back where it can, to allow its price point to be more accessible.

The standard rooms are beautifully decorated but if you really want to splash out, go for the Renaissance style suites! We booked one of these rooms as the ceilings featured the most elaborate paintings from the 17th century. These pieces are actually protected by the Town Hall as a historical monument of Prague. Dotted throughout the hotel are collectibles, original furniture, and antique parquet floors, which add to the building’s historical atmosphere.

Breakfast

Depending on your booking, breakfast may or may not be included. If your breakfast is not included, it costs 225 CZK per person (around $10 USD). While we had this included in our stay and thoroughly enjoyed it, I wouldn’t pay that much if you had the choice. They have everything you’d expect from a breakfast buffet; cereals, fresh fruit, pastries, cold cuts and made to order omelettes. But for $10 USD, I think you can go out somewhere else in Prague and have a much more authentic breakfast. Compared to the price of the full meals at their restaurant you do feel there is a “tourist tax” employed here for the breakfast menu.

Élite Garden restaurant

Located in the hotel’s courtyard is the Élite Garden restaurant, which specializes in traditional Czech cuisine. The open-air garden was a wonderful place to come and have a drink at night or enjoy a snack in the middle of the day. The delightful greenery and charming statues surrounding the courtyard make for the loveiest dining experience.

The restaurant uses ingredients from local producers and farmers and blends traditional recipes with modern culinary trends. Their lunch menu featuring a 3-course meal is only 145 CZK per person ($6 USD), which is even cheaper than the breakfast! Their dinner menu is ala cart but has a selection of seasonal offerings, which are always my go-to! I loved the grilled spicy pork ribs with cabbage salad and horseradish! For only 195 CZK ($8 USD), its an amazingly filling meal!

Facilities

In addition to the beautiful garden courtyard where guests can relax outside, there is a small spa on-site. There is an extra cost to use facility but at 500 CZK per person ($20 USD) I would give it a miss. Inside you’ll find a small spa with a sauna and whirlpool. But when I say small, I mean small as the facilities are just big enough for 2 people. This seems super overpriced so we skipped this altogether. They also seemed to offer massages, but these came with mixed reviews.

If you’re looking for a spa experience in Prague, I would recommend Sauna Central. For 2 hours inside the spa, it costs merely 375 CZK ($16 USD). Their facilities include 4 saunas and 1 steam room, a cooling pool, a relaxing cafe and even options for a private wellness room. These private rooms are perfect for couples and include your own private sauna and jacuzzi. These rooms cost 1000 CZK for 1-hour but for two people.

Accessibility

The elevator serves one side of the hotel and there is a way to cross to the other side. Ask the front desk staff for help accessing it should you require the elevator.

Staff

Although we found that not all the staff members spoke English, you are after all in another country, so some communication difficulties are to be expected. But the staff were always incredibly kind and patient. They even were a great help to me when I wasn’t feeling well and aided us to find a pharmacy and figure out what to ask for.

All in all, the Hotel Elite in Prague was such a highlight of our time in the city. I sincerely hope to go back and stay in another room to experience another side of the history hidden in those walls.

On my latest trip to Stockholm, I stayed in the NOFO Hotel. This hotel had been personally recommended to me by a few friends who had previously visited there, and I was eager to check it out for myself. NOFO is located in the hip neighbourhood of Södermalm. While staying in the center of town might seem like the best option for travelling, it often leaves you in an area deserted at night, as tourists are your only neighbours. Staying outside of the tourist hub, you get to see the real residences of the city. You can feel more a part of the citizens’ daily lives and get a better glance through the looking glass.

In the 1500s, Södermalm was a district that was mainly inhabited by the most impoverished workers of Stockholm. But today, a lot has changed! Now, in the streets of Södermalm, you can find the most relaxing cafes, trendy bars, and hipster clothing shops. 

Access & Transportation Nearby

NOFO Hotel a great place to be located as it is also just a 20-minute walk into the Gamla Stan, the historic old town of Stockholm. There is a metro station just 2-minutes down the road where you can get to Stockholm Central Station in 10-minutes. The Stockholm Slussen kajen ferry terminal is also located 15-minutes away by foot. From this terminal, you can take the ferry to any of the nearby islands. There are also buses which run all over the neighbourhood which will bring you anywhere in the city in a jiffy! This proved especially convenient during the winter when it was too cold to walk. I never had to wait for more than 10-minutes for a bus. This neighbourhood really proved to be super easy for getting around Stockholm!

History

NOFO Hotel prides itself on embuing the Södermalm spirit of creating a space for curiosity, creativity, open-mindedness. The building was initially built in the 18th century by brewer Lorenz Sifvert. The brewery was set up on the ground floor, and the upper levels were used for the workers, and the top floor was his residence. After the brewery went belly up, the large building remained a prized property, so the city bought it in 1812. For years it was used as a barracks for the city guard. Here beggars, petty thieves and women who engaged in prostitution were brought in to pay for their crimes.

Later in 1834, when the city was being ravaged by cholera, the building was once more converted into a temporary hospital. It wasn’t until 1976 when it was converted into the Columbus Hotell. The hotel continued to grow over the years, expanding into more and more rooms throughout the complex. They even turned the 18th-century vaults downstairs into a wine cellar! The hotel changed hands multiple times with each new owner continuing renovations to meet the needs of modern travellers. Finally, in 2014 we saw the opening of NOFO Hotel! Can you believe the history-steeped into these walls?! What a place to lie your head at night! Thankfully, I didn’t hear any ghost rattling around at night although you never know with all the goings-on which happened here…

Room Styles

Each of the rooms inside the NOFO hotel is different. This is not just so you have a unique experience, but because they could not change too much of the original building’s structure. So they had to get creative with the room layouts. There are only 109 rooms, over the three floors, which makes the space feel intimate without being too small as to not offer the fantastic amenities they have. There are four different design styles found throughout the hotel, each one featuring stylistic touches that are the definition of what makes a boutique hotel.

Scandinavian retro

The Scandinavian retro room features classic Swedish patterns, green leather and accent colours in yellow and orange. The inspiration comes from Scandinavian designs of 1930 from both Södermalm and Copenhagen.

Parisian

The Parisian rooms reflect ‘La Belle Époque‘ of Paris. Visual references for these designs were drawn from Montmartre, a small neighbourhood in Paris, which was home to the Moulin Rouge. As such, you’ll find velvet everywhere creating a lush, serene and somewhat sensual environment. Great for couples!

Metropolitan Luxury

The Metropolitan luxury rooms drew their inspiration from the Uptown neighbourhood of big cities like New York, London and Rome. They blend modern classics with elegant designs. 

Industrial Vintage

Their newest rooms are the Industrial Vintage style. The inspiration for these rooms was drawn from neighbourhoods like Södermalm, as well the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens in New York. They have a more contemporary vibe, with metal, leather, glass, solid wood and steel pipes incorporated into the layout. But for all the style and luxury, their room prices are incredibly affordable! If you have a design preference simply put that in your booking notes and the hotel will do its best to accommodate.

For me, one of the best things they offer were Single bedrooms. This is amazing since I was solo travelling while visiting the city. It was great to have the option of a single bed at a lower price, which was perfect for me. But when I arrived, they upgraded my room at no charge since there were a few Superior Rooms in the hotel unbooked. It’s these small gestures that smaller boutique hotels can do that make your stay even more special.

One of my favourite parts of my room was the view of the nearby church. At night, people would come to light candles in the cemetery for their loved ones. The gentle flickering of the candlelight at night was one of the most lovely sights to enjoy while sitting in my room, detailing the day’s experiences as night drew to a close.

It was Christmas time when I visited and throughout the entire hotel there were Christmas trees and decorations all over the place to make your home away from home feel as festive as possible! I loved these small touches and the warmth the twinkle lights brought to the dark and chilly weather was much appreciated!

Prices obviously vary during different times of the year but here is a good estimate of their ranges. All these rates include breakfast, which I’ll get into later—and all prices are listed in USD.

Amenities

Included in your hotel room you’ll get a laptop-sized safe, hairdryer, eco-labelled toiletries, iron and ironing board, and an umbrella. The toiletries were terrific, and if you’re trying to travel light, it’s great not to have to bring any of these items with you. Umbrellas take up a lot of space and weight so it was great to have one on hand! Should you be thirsty or peckish, there is a fully stocked minibar and an electric kettle to make coffee and tea in your room (which is free of charge). This was key for me after coming home from the cold. After throwing off my jacket, I would boil the pot as soon as possible to have warm tea upon slumping down in my comfy, made bed.

Book an executive room, junior suite or a regular suite and you’ll also get a CrossFit class ticket with their local gym partner (located 2 minutes’ walk from the hotel) Just ask at reception which classes are available and get your card there for a fun and challenging exercise. Might not be for everyone but for those who love to experience something different, this will be great for you! 

Breakfast

More often than not, I never book a room with breakfast included. I would usually far rather head outside and discover a new cafe or restaurant to dine in. But I had heard WONDERFUL things about breakfast here. I was also staying over the Christmas holidays and wasn’t sure what would be open, so I felt by booking the breakfast with the room, I would be sure to get something to eat as soon as I awoke. And let me tell you how glad I am, I did! The word ‘breakfast’ doesn’t even begin to describe how beautiful the spread they offer really is.

Decor

When I walked downstairs from my hotel room (and I always took the stairs as they were one of the oldest and most intriguing parts of the building) the smell would perk me right up from any jet lag I might have been feeling. There were over five different rooms you could dine in, spread out in their wine bar area, which is open in the evening. I would pick a different room to eat every day. Each one was fantastically decorated for Christmas and had a unique vibe.

The room which most resembled a cafe was where you could pick up your coffee or tea every morning. They had every kind of tea you could think of, and the coffee was just as good as you would get in a fancy coffee shop. Another thing I found so charming was the candy table right beside the brew bar. Swedes LOVE penny candy, and I couldn’t believe to see it at breakfast too. I surely indulged, “when in Rome,” am I right? Besides the candy, there were also some cookies and crackers for those looking for just a light breakfast.

The Buffet

Then you made your way to the extravagant breakfast buffet. Walking into the main breakfast room, I was almost overwhelmed by the selection found there. Every morning there were a variety of homemade smoothies to choose from in these adorable little shot glasses. Individual pots of freshly made yogurt were on offer, which you could top with fresh fruits, cereal, granola and jam compotes.

Everything from home-baked bread, pastries and cakes could be found on the carbs table. My favourite section had to be the make-your-own-breakfast-smorgasbord. Here you could fill your plate with cheese, pickled herring, pickled onions and radishes, various cured meats and more! There were also breakfast staples like scrambled eggs, bacon, porridge and prinskorv (prince sausages – a traditional Swedish breakfast item).

Christmas Breakfast

One Christmas morning, we were treated to a Christmas spread, which included all the previous items plus rice porridge with clementines, Juligt Knäckebröd (crispbread), saffron buns, and a lovely gingerbread Christmas cake! I have never experienced breakfast like this before, and I hope to experience it once more! It was the highlight of my day and got every morning off to a fantastic start. I remember the first night of my stay I had a bit of sickness from the stress of my journey, and that morning’s breakfast was all I needed to feel absolutely refreshed, reenergized and ready for the day!

There were also plenty of gluten-free and vegan options laid out. I was told you might need to ask for them, but I never had to inquire as I found everything I wanted each morning. Breakfast is served from 7 am to 10 am on weekdays and 7 am to 11 am on the weekends. DON’T MISS OUT!

Winebar

After coming home from a long day out, exploring the city, one of the best ways to wind down is relaxing at the bar. And at NOFO, the bar is only steps away from your hotel room! During the summer, the tables are set up outside so you can enjoy the Midsommar weather. In the winter, the cozy and sumptuous rooms indoors make you feel like you’re wrapped up in a big blanket. During my stay at Christmas, they even had their own Gin & tonic Glögg to try! Glögg is the Swedish version of mulled wine, so it was neat to try the same flavours in a gin and tonic!

The food on offer is uncomplicated and the Swedish interpretation of comfort food. The menu changes month to month, but you’re always bound to find something with a Scandinavian twist to indulge your travel tooth.

One of my favourite memories of the entire trip was on Christmas eve. I knew most places would be closed, so I headed out the day before and bought a bunch of groceries to have a little homemade smorgasbord of Swedish Christmas treats back at the hotel. I decorated my room with a few different Christmas souvenirs I had purchased and even set up a burning fireplace video on my phone to make the entire meal feel all the more festive. It was a beautiful way to celebrate the holiday, even far from home. The comfort of the gorgous hotel room really was the cherry on top!

I cannot recommend this place more and hope the next time you’re visiting Stockholm, you stay at the NOFO hotel.

Thankfully for me, I stumbled up Casa Dovela, located in our preferred neighbourhood of La Condesa. It was like a beacon of hope! They still had their two-bedroom apartment available, and we were able to book it up for the week we were in the city. And I suppose everything happens for a reason since our stay with Casa Dovela was one of the best parts of our trip.

Casa Dovela

Casa Dovela is a three suite, “Casa-Boutique”. It’s a cross between a luxury home and a boutique hotel located along the art-deco streets of Condesa. The building, which is now the boutique hotel, was left abandoned, like so many other residences in Condesa after the earthquake. But seeing its developmental potential, the creators, Chic by Accident Project and Ludwig Godefroy, snapped it up. They nabbed it just as the revitalization of Condesa was starting to take place. Aspects of the original architecture were preserved, but many parts of the building were modernized both for aesthetics and comfort.

We were met at the front door of Casa Dovela by one of the concierges to show us around the suite and all the many different amenities inside it. The concierges were absolutely fantastic to have. They work 24/7 to let you in and out of the front door but are also extremely helpful with any questions you might have about the property or Mexico City. While they didn’t speak English, we often used the translator apps and found that to work perfectly well.

San Jose Duplex

We stayed in the San José duplex. Walking inside the suite, the first thing you notice is the beautiful black clay flooring, which was made from materials from San Bartolo Coyotepec, in the state of Oaxaca. The floors are also heated underneath, which makes walking on them in the morning an absolute pleasure! Throughout the first floor, you could tell, that each and every object which decorated the room was brought there to serve a purpose and tell a story. The objects were all made by Mexican craftsmen in the mountain ranges of Mexico. The owners of the property frequently travelled to this region. They brought back their findings to add an element of regional art to the rooms.

The kitchen was perfectly set up, full of anything and everything you need. They even left us some kitchen essentials like coffee, tea, oil, and other pantry items. They were perfect for having a home-cooked meal if you were so inclined. Standing in the kitchen in the morning, it was lovely to make a coffee and watch the dogs play in the park adjacent to the house. Dog parks in Mexico City are so popular, as everyone seems to have a puppy. Watching the locals out at play in the morning with their pups made you feel like you were just a part of the fabric of the neighbourhood and weren’t staying in a hotel.

The heating throughout the apartment was very much appreciated since the mornings in Mexico City in the wintertime can still be pretty chilly. Standing in the dining room in the morning, you had the most beautiful view up to the blue skies or in the evening, you could stare up at the stars. The gorgeous spiral staircase leads only to the upstairs bedroom and bathroom, so it gave each of the bedrooms a better sense of privacy from each other.

The bathroom was my favourite place to be. I need to have a bathtub due to issues with my muscles and getting to relax in this one after a long day of walking and exploring was such a joy. I’ve never been in a bathtub before where I could lie flat and still not touch the ends of the tub. Incredible! The light which would shine in the windows, through the leafy trees outside, was nothing less than magic.

The living room was the only place where we felt they could have sacrificed a bit on aesthetics. We would have loved a much more comfortable couch and seating arrangement where we could all rest and relax after a long day. We do love having a drink and enjoying some local TV at night, but the arrangement of the chairs and their awkward couch didn’t quite allow for a comfortable evening.

Our bedrooms were a heavenly place. The beds were like falling into a massive pillow at the end of the day, they just seem to wrap you up in a big comfy hug. One of the best parts of Casa Dovela was the cleaning service provided every day. There is just something so lovely about coming home to a beautifully made bed and clean house (cause lets face it who has time to clean on vacation). That is something I always miss when I’m staying in an Airbnb.

While the small bit of outdoor space we had on the first floor might not have had a view, it was still nice to sit outside on the warmer mornings to sip my coffee and prepare for the rest of the day. Despite the lack of view, the terrace was filled with greenery, so it made you feel like you were in a little forest.

Right outside Casa Dovela, on Mondays, was a little farmers market which was perfect for picking up some food for the week. Since we had our own fully loaded kitchen, it was easy to get fresh fruits and veggies to prepare at home. We also picked up a large bouquet of roses for only $3 to decorate the interior of the house. The bouquet was so big we easily split it into multiple vases to put all over the house. Just something to make the place feel homier and shopping in this little market really made us feel like locals.

I would 100% recommend staying at Casa Dovela next time you’re visiting Mexico City if you’re travelling with a group. It’s that perfect combination of hotel and apartment. This provides you with the comfort and ease of a hotel with the feeling of living more like the locals that an apartment would.

The neighbourhood was located only 15 minutes by foot from the Gothic Quarter and 10 minutes from the Metro. The perfect place to be. Far enough away from the sights to remain a quiet and relaxed area but close enough to not warrant a massive trek anywhere we went.

The building we stayed in was built in 1920, and the beautiful art nouveau architectural influences were seen throughout. The only downside to the apartment was it was a six-floor walk-up. It was a pretty intense staircase, but once we reached the top, the view you were granted was more than worth the effort.

From the minute we stepped in the door, I felt like I was home. Bathed in the warmth of bright coloured and rich textures everywhere I looked.

The ground floor was complete with a luxurious bathroom (with a tub – my one MUST-HAVE for any home away from home), a bookshelf complete with any amenities and piece of entertainment you could want, one of the two bedrooms and a kitchen with all the mod-cons.

Our host was so kind enough to leave us milk, yoghurt, bread, fruit and every morning beverage anyone could even want. It made for an easy breafkast on the terrace the first morning we were there.

My mum and dad shared the bedroom on the first floor. It was tucked into a little nook beside the kitchen and a small balcony that stuck out on the back of the building with a beautiful view of both the city to the one side and the hillside to the other. The bed was covered in a bright green bedsheet and seemed to glow against the white walls and wardrobes. When lying down on the bed, you could stare up at the old brick ceiling from the original building. The bricks with their old wood beams seemed almost medieval but built to last and added to the character of the building.

The living room was the perfect place to kick your feet up at the end of a long day, and I was so impressed by all the little things our host had stocked up on that shelf. Blankets, towels for the beach, a cooler for a picnic, movies to watch on the tv and even books on Barcelona in case you came on even more of a whim than we did. But the real piece-de-resistance was to be found up the tiny, winding staircase behind the bookshelf.

Up here was the second floor of the apartment. It seemed to me like something the owner had made; it didn’t feel as old as the rest of the house, but I never thought to ask. Once you came up the staircase, you came into the second bedroom, where I would hold up for the week we would be staying in Barcelona. The large bedroom had a princess like a canopy you could open up if you felt like sleeping with the terrace doors wide open. The terrace was to the right of the bedroom and in the morning, if you left the curtain open, you had breathtaking views of the city to wake up to as the sun rose.

This was my favourite place to be. We ate breakfast on the terrace every morning, and I would sit out here every evening. The lights of the city dancing in the distance and very fairy lights strung up on the grapevines lighting up the terrace enough to read a few more chapters of your travel book before heading to bed. The internet was the one downside of this place, actually all over Barcelona to be fair. It was fairly weak anywhere in the house and non-existent on the roof.

This meant that when we were up here, you could turn off. No Facebook or Instagram to distract you. I sat up here and wrote in my notebook or just stared out into the distance, daydreaming in my head.

The upstairs bedroom also had a small table to eat at if you didn’t feel like dining on the terrace, but really…I can only imagine doing that if it were pouring rain outside.

It truly was the most incredible place to stay for the mini-break we had set out on. There aren’t many places I would return to simply for the accommodation, but this is one of them.

Ryokan Shimizu

Although this Ryokan doesn’t serve the fancy, traditional dinners to your room that others feature, Shimizu offers up every other aspect of a traditional Ryokan with the best service and hospitality I’ve received anywhere in the world. The room cost between $80-100/per night for two people. This is amazing as many other Ryokan are almost triple that price!

Location

Ryokan Shimizu was located about a 15-minute walk from the train station, which would have been a lovely little walk. Unfortunately, when we arrived, it was pouring rain, so we spent most of the journey running for shelter.

When we finally arrived, we were greeted by the friendliest Japanese owners who welcomed us into their establishment. They gave us two glasses of cold, Genmaicha tea in a ceramic glass to welcome us in. Already we felt right at home.

On the wall, as you entered, there was a mural of cards, letters and photos from fellow travellers expressing their gratitude and love for their stay.

Entrance and Common Areas

The entrance to the Ryokan was complete with small cubby holes for your outdoor shoes and a fresh pair of slippers to put on once entering the house. We immediately threw our wet shoes into the cubby and slipped into the comfy slippers.

The lobby of the Ryokan was complete with a small sofa where you could admire the Zen garden just outside the window. There was also a large area for pouring water and tea should you need refreshment while sitting downstairs and reading any of their large selection of books on Kyoto. Once settled, a kind gentleman took our bags, and we headed upstairs to our room.

Rooms

All the Ryokan rooms were built with tatami flooring and sliding doors, traditional in all classic Japanese houses. Tatami mats are made using rice straws and covered with a woven, soft rush. They are tough to clean but are gentle yet firm to stand or lie on. When you open the door, you immediately can smell their soft, earthy scent, like bamboo and sandalwood, permeating the air.

Japanese-style futons are synonymous with Ryokans and might seem strange to Westerners. These are light, quilted mattresses laid out on the floor. Usually, there is one per person, slightly larger than a single bed would be. The mattresses are thin enough to allow them to be moveable to be put away during the day to allow for more room in the home. These might be very hard for many Westerners to get used to, but compared to the hardstyle of Japanese beds we experience in Tokyo, these were actually much nicer to sleep on and roomier too!

Amenities

In addition to the large living/bedroom room, there was a private bathroom (complete with private bathtub), a large closet for our luggage and extra bedding, a fridge, tiny TV (local Japanese stations only) and a beautiful wooden table with floral mats to sit on. A small tea set was provided, along with supplies for making tea right in the comfort of our room. We were wet and cold from the rain and made a pot of hot tea immediately.

After so many busy days in Tokyo, we were dying for a break. We made the tea, went out to a local convenience store for some snacks and spent the rest of the day inside. I had a big nap, read my book and studying the binder left for us by the Ryokan. Inside were laminated pages of maps to the big attractions right from the hotel, the best places to eat and drink, places to do laundry and more. It was like having a local tour guide right there to give you all the advice you’d ever need. It was so lovingly created and made a difference in our experience of Kyoto.

Yukatas

The Ryokan also provided us with yukatas to wear while we were at home. A yukata is a light, cotton kimono generally made for everyday use. They were very comfortable and nice to relax in a while lying in bed. It made the whole experience feel very authentic.

Onsen

One of the best parts of this Ryokan was their private, on-site onsen. An onsen is a Japanese hot spring and bathing facility. Since Japan sits on top of volcanically active grounds, the water underneath the earth is almost always hot, providing a natural spring. Many large, public onsens are found all over Japan. But for anyone new to experiencing an onsen, a private one is much simpler and less awkward. Onsen water is believed to have healing powers derived from its mineral content.

To use an onsen, both in public and private, requires you to follow several etiquette rules. These were expertly explained to us by our lovely hosts and detailed on a laminated sheet of paper inside the private onsen. The first step is to make sure you wash your body before entering the water. Bathing stations are located right beside the onsen; you sit on stools, turn on the faucets, and use their plastic or wooden buckets to clean your body. Swimsuits are not allowed; this may be particularly awkward in public for some and requires a bit of courage.

There are small towels to place over your private parts for modesty, but they are pretty small. Hence why a private onsen might be a little more comfortable to use. Once clean, you can step into the bath. Each day, our Ryokan added different types of aromatic baths, scents, seasonal fruits, flowers or hot spring minerals. It was immensely relaxing. We had the entire place to ourselves for an entire two hours—the perfect way to unwind after a long day.

Our Experience

Every morning we would wake up from a cozy slumber. Adjusting to the futons took about a day, but there was certainly lots of room to stretch out.

Our room had a view down to the garden and front yard patio. There were several tables and chairs set up so you could enjoy a cup of coffee, a bit of lunch or even just sit and read in the shade of the beautiful garden.

The Garden

Despite it being the middle of October, there were flowers out all over the garden. Yellow, pink and red flowers dotted the bright green grass, and large-leafed plants peaked from along the walls. Hidden in the backyard were different ceramic sculptures of the raccoon dog, “Tanuki. “ He is a full-bellied Japanese prankster god based on a wild canine native to Japan. After a famous ceramic maker had given several sculptures of the Tanuki to the Emperor, who displayed them all over his castle, these figures become popular with the public and having one in your garden likened you to the Emperor himself.

In the front of our Ryokan is a purification fountain complete with flowers and ladles to cleanse your hands before coming into the Ryokan. Although doing this isn’t necessary, it’s a sign of respect for the household if you do so. Plus, it always smelled fantastic.

Our favourite thing to do was visit the local bakery in the morning, find a coffee shop and bring our goodies back to the Ryokan to enjoy outside. The sun was beating down on our faces, watching locals pass by on their bikes on their way to work.

We were heartbroken when it was time to say goodbye to this place. It was BY FAR the best place we stayed while in Japan. In addition to feeling like we experienced a piece of Japan’s history while staying here, it was also the most comfortable place we stayed with the sweetest hosts. They had taken our picture before we left, and we put it up on the wall with the other smiling faces, a small souvenir for them to remember us by. I really hope we return. I can’t wait to see them again.

I have never been to Niagara-on-the-Lake prior to this visit. I had passed through many times on the way to Niagara Falls but never stayed in this enchanting little town. The best place to stay is the historic Prince of Wales Hotel.

No exaggeration; this is the most beautiful hotel I have ever visited in North America. Last Fall, we stayed in a 5-star hotel in Beverly Hills, and although it was pretty posh, it was too modern for my tastes. I prefer something with a bit of history. So this hotel felt like it was MADE for me.

About the Prince of Wales Hotel

The Prince of Wales Hotel stands as a landmark in historic Niagara-on-the-Lake. It has stood in this exact spot since 1864! It is a part of a chain of hotels called Vintage Hotels. This company features some of the best-preserved hotels in Ontario, which retain their antique charm but have many modern amenities.

The name of the hole “Prince of Wales” was in honour of the 1901 Duke and Duchess of York visit. These two would later be crowned King George V and Queen Mary. Their legacy can be seen all over the hotel. Paintings of their reign are hung throughout the hallways and guest rooms. And the essence of Victorian charm covers the floors, walls and even ceilings.

Architecture

Its architectural style was that of the Second French Empire, seen most clearly in its mansard roof. Everything felt so regal. It was as if you became the same kind of royalty that his hotel was named after when you entered. Our suite was in the building the furthest away from reception, but I didn’t mind. Walking down all the corridors and exploring every little corner of this place was a treat.

Rooms and Suites

Our hotel room was the cutest little place. Even the rooms are decorated in the Victorian style with Tiffany stained glass lamps on either side of the room and paintings of young girls in frilly dresses all over the place. We even had our little fireplace, the perfect thing to curl up in front of after coming in from the cold outdoors.

One of my favourite things about this place was the corridor into the reception area. It was lined with replica paintings from famous Flemish painters and other grandmasters. Even the wallpaper was luxuriously embellished! The ornate frames seemed to grow and swell with overgrowth as if they were living within these walls.

Pool & Spa

After settling in, we headed off for a dip in the pool. Even the swimming area was decked out with Victorian designs. The shape of the pool reminded me of European bathhouses.

After a dip in the pool and a soak in the hot tub, we were off for our couple’s massage in their world-class spa! We changed into our robes and made our way down to the spa. We sat in lush leather chairs and sipped tea and coffee while waiting. Even the bathrooms down here were gorgeous. Delftware-inspired porcelain sinks and wall tiles sparkled, and real wooden doors with etched glass made up each stall.

Restaurant and Food

The room where we had our massage was sumptuously decorated. It was perhaps the largest room I’d ever been in for a massage, but the luxury of the place simply added to the relaxation. After our massage and little outing, we returned to the hotel for a 4-course Valentine’s Dinner. Everything was perfect, but we perhaps had the best time entertained by a couple fighting with the waiter beside us. We gave him our condolences as they were the worst kind of people, but it made for a very entertaining dinner.

After too much wine and indulgence, we went back to the room where roses and chocolate-covered strawberries were awaiting us. We ate them before the fire as night poured itself over our eyes. 

The next morning we ordered food to our room, not wanting to escape the warmth of our fireplace. I ordered a simple English breakfast with cinnamon biscuits, and Dan chowed down some peanut butter pancakes.

But like all things, there must be an ending. We begrudgingly packed up our things and headed out. It was undoubtedly the most romantic and luxurious weekend of my life – and I got to spend it with my favourite person in the world.
