#1 Gellert Baths

The Gellert Baths are not only one of the most iconic places in Budapest to rest and relax, but they are also some of the most beautiful. The art nouveau style design of the thermal spa has put awe on the faces of bathers for ages. The baths were built between 1912 and 1918, but the healing waters were used as far back as the Middle Ages. The Turks built a Sárosfürdő (“muddy” bath) in the 16th century and called the area the “magical healing spring.” One of the most beautiful areas of the space is the main hall, which has a stained glass Art-Nouveau-style roof. But my favourite space is the old male spa (which now can be enjoyed by all genders). Blue mosaics encase this room in a relaxing aura. Click here for my first-timer’s guide to thermal baths!

#2 Fisherman’s Bastion

Fisherman’s Bastion has one of the greatest views across Budapest. But the Bastion itself is a stunning architectural masterpiece atop Buda Hill. Its neo-Romanesque lookout terraces and spiralling turrets make this place a joy to behold. Walk along the 35-meter-long parapet, which acts as a balcony to the Danube River. The seven towers which decorate the roofline represent the seven chieftains of the Hungarians who founded Hungary in 895. There are so many angles from which to get your favourite shot of the Bastion. From above or below, this structure has so much majesty. It can get busy with tourists, but since it’s so large, it’s easy to find a quiet area for your perfect shot.

#3 View from the Funicular in Buda Castle

The Buda Hill Funicular has been a stalwart method of transportation in Budapest for more than a hundred years. It takes guests and tourists alike from the base of Buda Hill to the top of Buda Castle. This historical cable care has been running since 1870. It was destroyed in a WWII bombing raid, but it has been lovingly reconstructed. They ensured the new design kept the original, retro style. As the funicular goes up the hillside, you’ll have an incredible vantage point across Budapest. And see if you can fit some of the other vintage cable cars in your shot for those extra details!

#4 St. Matthias Church

St. Matthias Church, or Church of the Assumption of the Buda Castle (as it is more formally known), is a Roman Catholic church at the heart of Buda’s Castle District. The original church built on this site was constructed in 1015! The current version is a restored structure from the late Gothic style built in the 14th century. Since the Turks converted the church into a mosque in the 16th century, many of those elements remain. Creating this fusion between Christian and Islamic architecture. In the 19th century, diamond-patterned roof tiles were added to create perhaps the most appealing part of the church. While controversial at the time, today, this bold choice has made the church highly sought after by tourists and photographers alike.

#5 Buda Castle

Buda Castle was where Hungarian kings and queens spent their days ruling the empire as early as 1265. The Baroque palace we see today was built between 1749 and 1769. There is something about the repetitive windows and symmetrical baroque design which is utterly pleasing to the eye. And perfect for a photographer! But my favourite place in the palace is the Matthias Fountain. The fountain is located in the western forecourt. It depicts King Matthias Corvinus surrounded by his beloved hounds, who have killed a deer. Above him are a statue of a hawk and a doe. They stand among a pile of fallen rocks with water running between them. They feel like they have been frozen in time and add a bit of life to the still life of the castle.

#6 New York Palace

The New York Palace is a luxury hotel on the Grand Boulevard in Budapest. Stepping inside its front doors feels like entering a royal residence, despite the fact that it is just a hotel. Despite the inclusion of the word “New York,” the palace bears no resemblance to the US city. This is simply because the building was built by the New York Life Insurance Company, which used it as its head office starting in 1894.

While the hotel might break the bank for most visitors, their cafe on the first floor is a great alternative. The cafe and bar are still costly, but the interiors are worth the price of admission. The gilded restaurant is covered in lush tapestries, frescoes, fantastical faun sculptures, and enormous swirling marble columns. The cafe has always been a hub for Hungarian poets and writers and is sure to inspire all those who enter.

#7 Szimpla Kert Ruin Bar

You can’t say you’ve been to Budapest without visiting a Ruin Bar. In the early 2000s, old, dilapidated buildings in the Jewish Quarter were given new life. Szimpla Café opened up inside one of these abandoned structures. The bar owners had little money to renovate the space but wanted to open it up. So, instead, they embraced the ramshackle environment and used their creativity to create an erratic, bohemian environment. They offered young customers cheap drinks inside this crumbling building. Over the years, artists came in and added their own touches. Custom graffiti, vintage oddities, and mismatched furniture created a king of curated chaos. Which ends up being quite mesmerizing. The environment inside is boisterous and joyful. Discovering all the different creations inside the bar is the best part of visiting a Ruin Bar. It feels like a little scavenger hunt!

#8 Flippermúzeum Pinball Museum

Deep underground in Budapest, you’ll find one of the most interesting and colourful exhibitions: the Flippermúzeum or Pinball Museum. This exhibition/museum/arcade features over 130 machines spread out inside its underground lair. The pinball machines date from as early as the 19th century and into the modern era. There is something wonderfully mysterious about the dimly lit basement set ablaze by these iconic arcade games’ bright neon and flashing lights.

#9 The Hungarian Parliament Building

The most iconic image of Budapest is the famous Hungarian Parliament Building. It sits on Kossuth Square on the Pest side of the city. The building is nestled against the edge of the Danube River. The proximity to the river means a reflection of the building is almost permanently emblazoned onto the water. The symmetrical neo-Gothic architecture was designed by architect Imre Steindl in 1902 and is still one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city today.

There really isn’t a bad angle you can get on this building, but my favourite time of day to shoot it is at night. Parliament looks like it had been cast in gold and shines against the midnight blue of the river. Seeing it from across the other side of the Danube, you can really take in the entirety of the building reflected in the water.

#10 Central Market Hall

When you step inside Budapest’s Central Market Hall, delightful sunlight pouring through the glass windows creates the most welcoming effect. Built-in 1896, it is the largest and oldest indoor market in Budapest. The brightly coloured vegetables, rich red paprika for sale, and beautifully designed wrought iron railings create the most inviting backdrops for your photos.

#11 Ruszwurm Cafe

This tiny bakery in the Buda Castle district feels like something out of Marie Antoinette’s Versaille. The gorgeous pastries inside the glass cabinets look almost too good to eat. The interior is one of the coziest little shots, paired with the antique decor. Ruszwurm Cafe was first established in 1827, and you can still eat the same recipes they served on their opening day! Be sure to try the Mille Feuille cake; it might be one of the best versions of this recipe, even if it is not available in France!

#12 Széchenyi Thermal Bath

The Széchenyi Thermal Baths were built in 1913 in grande Neo-Baroque style. The enormity of this spa makes it almost feel like a public park. Families are chatting, old men are playing chess, kids are playing, and newlyweds are cuddling up. The only difference is that everyone is in their bathing suits and caps! One of the best parts of the Széchenyi Baths is the brightly coloured outdoor space. Under the blue sky, you can soak in the relaxing waters set against a sea of golden-yellow buildings. There is something just so radiant and cheery about this space. It’s hard not to want to take a million pictures while unwinding from the stress of travel!

#13 Heroes’ Square

Heroes Square, or Hősök tere, is one of the largest squares in Budapest. Around the perimeter are statues of the Seven Chieftains of the Magyars and other important Hungarian national leaders. They were cast in copper and set in between towering columns. In the centre of the square is a huge column topped by the statue of archangel Gabriel. In his hand, he holds the Holy Crown of St. Stephen (Istvan), the first king of Hungary. There is something so powerful about having a picture of yourself in this square. The juxtaposition of your tiny frame and the large statues brings their enormity to the forefront.

#14 Dohány Synagogue

The Jewish Quarter in Budapest is my favourite part of the city. It is full of history but also super modern in a bohemian way. The streets feel so alive even when they are empty. In the centre of the Jewish Quarter, you’ll find the great Dohány Synagogue. The Great Synagogue is the largest synagogue in Europe and towers over the rest of the district. The twin onion domes, banded in gold, shimmering in the sunlight, draw you in.

The synagogue was built in 1854 in Moorish revival style, with inspiration and designs from Islam, north Africa and medieval Spain. I could spend hours studying the different ornamentations and patterns that decorate this space. It is awe-inspiring. Whether you only see it from the outside or choose to venture inside, there are so many beautiful angles from which to study this synagogue. It’s a photographer’s dream.

#15 Széchenyi Chain Bridge

The Széchenyi Chain Bridge connects the Buda and Pest sides of the city together over the Danube River. The bright green ironwork of the bridge was an innovation by English engineer William Tierney Clark made in 1849. The colouring feels like something which makes the bridge stand out in the middle of the city. But when it was first built, it was more than just functional. The bridge was a symbol of Hungary’s advancement in technology and engineering. It was of national significance, linking the East and the West together as one part of a great city.

The bridge became something that brought calmness and balance to the two sides. To this day, walking down the bridge still gives you a sense of this harmony. This bridge is as important as the Brooklyn Bridge in New York or the Golden Gate in San Francisco. Getting a picture of yourself on the bridge is a great way to mark your arrival or departure from Budapest.

While some people find this to be a bit like a living museum, that’s exactly what I liked. I always try to imagine what these ancient cities would have felt like in their day but here in Dresden you actually get a taste of what that might have been like – but with wifi. The city is both bursting with gorgeous architecture but also has its fair share of cute cafes, bars and restaurants ideal for instagrammers. Here are some of my favourite locations that photo savvy travellers must visit on their next trip to Dresden! Old Masters Gallery

The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (or Old Masters Gallery) is honestly the best art gallery I ever had the pleasure of visiting. It doesn’t feel too big nor too small. It’s like a grand old home that someone has decorated with exquisite pieces of arts — a stellar collection that’s lovingly curated. While it may seem much smaller than the Louvre or the Prado, there are over 700 paintings on display, all ranging from the 15th to 18th century. Treasures from major Italian Renaissance artists, Dutch and Flemish masters and other works by German, French and Spanish painters combine to form this hidden gem in Dresden. Standing amongst these iconic images feels like standing inside a great storybook and makes for such an incredible photo.

Coselpalais

Food and architecture fans will find common ground here at the Coselpalais. The old palace has been reconstructed in late Baroque style and now serves as a charming little cafe and restaurant in the old town. The original building was built in 1550 and looks like a buttercream yellow castle out of Beauty and the Beast. Grab a latte, and a fanciful teacake served on the iconic Meissen porcelain and enjoy the views all around you on the patio under the blue skies. If you’re looking to try a traditional German dessert, order up to the apple cake with streusel!

Brühl’s Terrace

Brühl’s Terrace is known as the Balcony of Europe. It is an enormous platform that stretches along the shores of the Elbe River. Here you’ll see both tourists and locals alike, strolling down the promenade enjoying the fantastic views. The terrace was once built as a fort to protect the city from invaders, but in the 19th century, it was transformed into this lovely pedestrian walkway. Along this riverside path, you’ll see framed the iconic skyline of the city and gorgeous flowerbeds colouring the grey concrete. During the holidays this is a great place to come for pop-up markets, especially exciting during Christmas time!

Münzgasse 

Münzgasse is a street just across from the Elbe River which feels almost too curated to be real. The two blocks of apartments flanking the road frame the stunning Frauenkirche perfectly. Walking down the street feels like stepping into a painting. On either side of the pedestrian street are various touristy restaurants which are not worth your money but do provide the the backdrop for this stunning scene.

Zwinger

The Zwinger is to this day one of the most incredible baroque buildings in Germany. It was built for Augustus II the Strong, who had been inspired by King Louis XIV. He had returned from a visit to his new court of Versaille and was eager to create a similar elaborate palace for himself. But this was would be located in his hometown of Dresden.

The Zwinger was built in the late baroque style called ‘Rococo’. The Rococo style embraced curves and elaborate ornaments but amped-up the drama. Rococo added a sense of play to the designs. Rococo designers felt that architecture should have a sense of motion, and they used dramatic curves, which made the viewer feel as though the building was alive. The Rococo style loved to emphasize piety. Plants and vines are featured prominently, carved into so many parts of the Zwinger. Construction began in 1710 and it took over 18 years to be completed. Anywhere you look here there are gorgeous shots to be found. Since the Zwinger is so large it’s easy to find more private spaces, ideal for framing that perfect shot.

The Royal Palace

The Royal Palace is one of the oldest buildings in Dresden, originally built around 1200. Additional wings were constructed over the years, creating an almost patchwork quilt of architecture styles from Renaissance to Baroque and Romanesque. These days, the royal family no longer resides inside. Instead, the building contains a museum complex where you can explore the treasury, the armory and even see collections of prints and drawings as well as old photographs of Dresden before the bombing. The exterior of the Palace is where the real visual treat lies. It’s fascinating to see this Palace so integrated with the rest of the city, instead of walled off like so many other royal residences around Europe.

Procession of Princes

Along Schloßstraße, you’ll find one of the greatest remnants of old Dresden, the Procession of Princes. This 101-meter long porcelain portrait depicts the entire history of Dresden through the men who built, controlled, governed and sparked new thoughts and ideas within it. It features Dukes, Electors, Kings and other leading figures from the arts and sciences. This is the world’s largest porcelain artwork. The mural was first installed in 1871 and took more than five years to complete. Shockingly enough this mural withstood the great Dresden bombing of WWII. It suffered minimal damage and was a beacon of hope to the people of Dresden after the war. Today its still one of the most striking images you can find in the city.

Royal Stables

Just down from the Procession of Princes is the Stallhof und Langer Gang or Royal Stables. These stables were used as the location for horse tournaments since the 15th century. Some of the most exciting jousting activities took place here and where the who’s who of Germany elite came to be entertained. Today, the stalls are the site of the Dresden Christmas Market. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting during the holiday season, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most magical sights in the world. There really is nothing like a Christmas market in Europe when the snow is falling and catches the twinkling fairy lights as it touches the ground. But throughout the rest of the year the architectural curves and the effect of the light in the arcade is out of this world!

Neumarkt

The Neumarkt is the cultural centre of the Dresden’s historic district. The original Neumarkt was designed in the German Baroque style. Baroque designers loved pastel colours, not just on their frescos; but everywhere they could put them. Today it feels like walking through a miniature buttercream village. Standing in the center of the square is the iconic Frauenkirche, which was completely destroyed during a bombing run in WWII. But after the bombs had fell, hundreds of volunteer collected the burn rumble from the original church and stored it away, waiting for the day it would be rebuilt. And it was, and used many piece of that original structure which so many people help preserve for future generations.

Pfunds Molkieri

Pfunds Molkieri, covered floor to ceiling in the most incredible tiles and Meissen porcelain, is the oldest dairy shop in East Germany. Built in 1879 this shop was the first place where German’s could buy high-quality, concentrated milk. Although the dairy was mostly destroyed in WWII, the family made sure to rebuild in the exact same fashion as the original. Now, visitors can come to see and taste the extraordinary place which is Pfunds Molkieri. Guests can try different kinds of milk from farms across Germany as well as cheese, wines and more!

Neustadt Street Art

While most of the historical parts of Dresden were destroyed in WWII, the “new” town built across the river was spared from the destruction as it proved no real military threat to the attackers. This meant that despite being called “new town” the structures here are actually older than the reconstructions found in the “old town”. Neustadt or “new town” remains a bohemian stronghold in Dresden and even today is where you can find some of the coolest shops, bars and exciting nightlife. But if those things aren’t for you, just wandering the streets is a feast for the eyes. Neustadt has become a popular neighbourhood for local street artists who bring otherwise boring walls to life with colours, textures and even sculptural details. You can find some of the most lively street art found anywhere in Dresden right here.

Kunsthof Passage

Inside the walls of Neustadt, you’ll find the famous Kunsthof Passage. These dreamlike courtyards come from the visionary mind of various Dresden artists who turned these empty spaces into an art experiment. There are four different themed courtyards to visit; Elements, Animals, Light, and Metamorphoses. Each one features strange and intriguing details which draw in your eye and ask your to question what you’re looking at. In the Courtyard of the Elements, you’ll find a piece inspired by the Rube Goldberg Machine which turns rainfall in a symphonic orchestra! Even without rain it’s a gorgeous work of art to admire.

Cinema Thalia

Inside the inner walls of the Neustadt, you’ll find one of the oldest cinemas still standing in Germany. Built in 1889, Cinema Thalia once used to host people from all over Dresden, and at one time the cinema would extend into what is now the beer garden to hold over 700 people! After being destroyed in 1945, it lay dormant, untouched by the modern era until it was plucked from obscurity in 2004 and returned to live as a hipster mecca. The large theatre was transformed into a cafe and cinema where, and until 2008, people were still allowed to smoke, hence the name on the front “Cinema. Coffee and Cigarettes”. Today it’s still a gorgeous icon east German, retro design.

Yenidze

To experience one of the most unique beer gardens in the city and catch a stunning view across Dresden, head over to Yenidze. From afar you might think that this building is an Ottoman mosque, but originally it was actually a tobacco factory. Built in 1907 by Hugo Zietz, the Yenidze tobacco company, was designed in “oriental” style to recall the “exotic origins of tobacco”. The chimney used to process smoke from the factory was incorporated into the architecture as a fake minaret. Today, the building is used as an office but the top floor is home to an incredible restaurant with rooftop views across the city and over to the mountains in the distance.

Stammhaus

The most iconic picture from Germany must be of a beer hall, and the Stammhaus in the centre of Dresden is one of the best! This brewery dates all the way back to 1858! Inside the new three-story restaurant, beer gardens and bar are antiques collected by the brewing family from over the years. The food is as traditional as you can get and it all washes down deliciously with a glass of Feldschlößchen Pilsner or Zwickelbier. Sitting in the restaurant, you feel like you’re dining inside a piece of Dresden’s history! My favourite visual of the restaurant is the giant copper brewing lid which serves as a roof atop the bar!

Dresden is such a wonderful place to explore and get away from the crowds which you’ll find in more popular cities across Germany like Berlin and Munich. It’s still that untapped gem which only those in the know are want to find. #1. Bertrand Livraria

Bertrand Livraria is the oldest bookstore in the world. It was opened in 1732 and survived both the fire, earthquake and tsunami of 1755 which levelled much of Lisbon. Today it is standing like a quiet landmark in the middle of the busy city. There is only a small sign out front announcing its historic status. The blue and white tiles, which are so popular across Lisbon, are some of the most iconic and their tiled wall, from the 1700s is an incredible place to take a snapshot. I love the way they appear to bloom like flowers.

#2. Alfama District

Alfama was one of the only neighbourhoods to entirely withstands the massive earthquake of 1755. This district is littered with historic houses as old as the city itself, cobblestone streets which are so worn down the stones are almost indistinguishable from each other as well as some of the most vibrant personalities the city has to offer. The squares of Alfama are alight with colourful banners and decorations.There always seems to be some sort of party or festival happening here. Mixed in with the ancient stones and tiles, the colours and breathtaking backdrops here are unreal.

#3. Rua da Rosa in Bairro Alto

Bairro Alto is a neighbourhood which absolutely silent during the day, and yet at night, it explodes with life! It’s where you’ll find all the trendiest bars and the hottest night life. But during the day time, it’s a fantastically peaceful place to explore. And admire the iconic Portuguese tiles and bright coloured apartment buildings. Walking down the streets you’ll hear only the sound of your footsteps. And the occasion resident sweeping off their front steps.

#4. Bica Elevator

The Bica Elevator is one of the most popular spots for a photo is Lisbon. And while it might seem overly touristy during the day, in the early morning, this part of the Bica neighbourhood is absolutely stunning and provides incredible photography opportunities. The old tram began running 1892. It’s aim was to help the residents of Lisbon get up the steep hills upon which the city is built on top of. Although these trams and the surrounding neighbourhood are always heavily graffitied, this somehow only adds to the vibrant nature of the area. Doesn’t detract from it.

#5. Rua da Condessa

At the end of the Rua da Condessa, in Bairro Alto, you’ll find a long staircase, flanked on either side by dazzling buildings. In between the two buildings is framed on the most magnificent vistas in Lisbon. In the distance, high atop the hill is one of Lisbon’s old ruins, like the old guard looking down over the new city.

#6. Miradouro de Santa Luzia

My favourite Miradouro is the Miradouro de Santa Luzia! Not only does it have one of the most spectacular views across Alfama and the Tagus river, but it is also has a lush garden. Filled with incredible tile work veranda and lots of rich, blooming trees. No matter which way you’re looking, there is something absolutely magical to see here. This place gets mobbed during the day time. But if you arrive early enough (especially at sunset) you’ll be in for a real treat!

#7. Carmo Convent

The Carmo Convent was once Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a Catholic convent located in the heart of Barrio Alto. Fires, earthquakes, political and religious upheaval all resulted in the convent falling to ruins, but thankfully no one had the funds to demolish it. In the later 20th century, it was converted into a museum and what was left of the structure was given supports to prevent its further degeneration. The interior of the convent, with it’s roofless view of the sky is breathtaking. If you’re lucky enough to be there at night or when there is an event, the interior is lit up to highlight the architectural details. And the open rooftop provides stunning views of the stars above.

#8. Jeronimos Monastery

The Jeronimos Monastery was built in the 15th century by King Manuel who used money the realm gained from explorations around the world to fund its construction. Portugal was known for its explorers and as such, made a lot of money from its imports. This meant the architect had a virtually unlimited budget for the construction and it’s for this reason that we find this opulent, renaissance building we see today. No matter where you turn or where you look, there are exquisitely framed shots. Hidden in the details throughout the building are oceanic elements, reflecting this strong seafaring country. A joy to discover as you explore.

#9. Tower of Belém

The Tower of Belém is located along the scenic Tagus river. It was once a defensive system for Lisbon to help the military see any incoming ships into their harbour. The tower is both a military structure but also an architectural gem of the city. Standing in low tide, on the shores of the river, looking up at this tower is a magnificent sight to see. There’s no need to wait in the super long line and pay six euros to get inside. The view from the exterior is much prettier anyways and exploring it from all angles along the banks of the river is much more fun than waiting in a line.

#10. Arco Da Rua Augusta

The entryway to Lisbon’s largest square can be found through the Arco Da Rua Augusta. The gateway opens up onto the Comercio Plaza which looks out over the Tagus River. This archway is located along one of the busiest streets in Lisbon and sometimes it can get annoyingly touristy. But if you arrive here early in the morning, you’ll be left only with the elegant scene of 18th century Lisbon.

1. Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine

Fushimi Inari-Taisha ShrineOne of the most iconic images of Japan has to be the bright, vermilion-coloured torii gates of Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto. Many people come to Fushimi Inari Taisha not knowing the scope of it. They see the images online and think it’s just a few small alleyways – this is far from the whole picture. The main shrine sits at the base of the Inari mountains, but a path of thousands of torii gates behind the building leads visitors up 233 meters above sea level to visit 4 kilometres of sub-shrines, finally ending at the magnificent mountain top shrine.

To get the best shot without hundreds of people crowded inside the gates, prepared for a long hike. When you first the Torii gate trail, you’ll see it is crammed with tourists. The effect of the gates might seem a little distorted when full of people, but as you continue to walk, more and more people drop off, having had their fill, and suddenly you’ll find yourself being the only one in these fields of bright orange forest. The hike really pays off, and the view from the top of the mountain is absolutely breathtaking.

2. The Kimono Forest

About 30 minutes from the centre of the city is the village of Arashiyama. While this place is most famous for its incredible bamboo forest (also in this list), one of the more obscure places to visit here, which is absolutely unbelievable for Instagrammers, is the Kimono Forest. Behind the Sagano Romantic Train Station, you’ll find a forest created from a series of cylinder-shaped pillars. Each one contains various strips of fabric, the kind used in the design of traditional Japanese Kimonos. There are about 600 different pillars with 32 different patterns inside. Walk around to see if you can spot them all! The best time of day to see this exhibit is at dusk since the columns all light up and form a glowing pathway.

3. Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is heralded as being one of the “most beautiful groves on earth” and has been designated a “National Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty” by Japan. The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is truly a place unlike anywhere else. It’s a spot where you can escape yourself, as long as you manage to escape the throngs of tourists as well. Obviously, everyone wants to be here when you have a clear shot of the grove without anyone in the way. Lots of people will tell you to come even before sunrise. And while that’s probably your best chance, even those super early risers have been disappointed to see that hundreds of others had the same idea.

Advice on Touring the Forest

My advice is to take the crowds as they come and not to stress about waking up SUPER early on what’s supposed to be a relaxing vacation. I actually found that later in the afternoon, there were the least amount of people in comparison to the morning. It seemed like the tour buses were well on their way home as the sun began to set.

But even with tourists aplenty, there is still plenty to enjoy and ways to get those amazing shots! If one area becomes inundated with people, quickly pass through the crowd, and suddenly you’ll see that the path opens up. The dense areas of individuals tend to be formed by bus tours, all walking through together, so if you pass by them quickly, you might find that space they just left is pretty empty. A lot of these tour buses also don’t spend too much time in the forest. They enter at the beginning of the path but never make it to the end. I found that if you walk to the very end of the grove, you’ll find that by the end of the path, you’ll have the place to yourself at times.

4. Nishi Market

The Nishiki Market now spans five covered street blocks with hundreds of shops and restaurants on either side. Because the market is a covered pedestrian walking area, this is a great place to come if it happens to be raining while you’re visiting. They call this market “Kyoto’s Kitchen” since anything you need to prepare your meals is all right here under one roof. The market was first opened in 1615! Visually this street is a wonder! The red, yellow and green glass-covered rooftop cast this incredible glow down on all the shops below, each one of which has the most amazing visuals out on display; some are handicrafts, others are brightly coloured cakes, shiny fish scales glimmering in the lights or even the mochi makers pounding their delightfully green creations.

5. Kyoto Tower

Kyoto Tower, located right above Kyoto’s central train station, is the tallest structure in Kyoto and definitely the most modern one as well. It really stands out, literally as well as figuratively. While it might seem out of place, the juxtaposition of the contemporary tower against an ancient skyline and the scenic mountains in the distance is a wonderfully composed photo.

6. Traditional Fan Shops

A traditional Japanese folding fan is one of the most popular souvenir items which people bring back from Japan, but unlike some touristy things, Japanese people do indeed use these daily in the more rural areas of Japan where modern conveniences are a luxury. Before air conditioning, these fans were the perfect way to keep cool on a hot day and their design and the artist who made them have been highly regarded for hundreds of years. You can still visit the artisans who create these iconic fans at Hangesho in the Shin Miyagawa Muso neighbourhood. This is where some of Kyoto’s famous Geisha get their fans, which they use in their tea ceremonies. Watching the delicate hands of these artists at work is a genuine experience but looking at their works on the walls is a feast for your eyes (and camera)!

7. Kamo River Bridge

Near Gion, you’ll find the Kamo River Bridge. The best place to get a shot of the main bridge is from the bridge just south of the main crossing. The Kamo River has served over the years as a place of great importance for the people of Kyoto. The river was diverted in the 8th century to ensure the new course past the town’s new capital Heian Capital (now called Kyoto).

The river was not only a place for the locals to get their drinking water but was where many of the local fabric makers would come to dye their beautiful fabrics, and pottery makers would begin to get supplies for their work, two iconic symbols of Kyoto craftsmanship. At night the lights from the neighbouring street light up the ancient trees, which line the river’s edge and create the most stunning picture. From here, you can also see the famous Minamiza Kabuki Theater in the distance, as well as a myriad of other iconic structures from Kyoto’s architectural history.

8. Geisha Spotting in Gion

The Gion district is one of Kyoto’s oldest neighbourhoods. The streets seem to surge with history, but what makes this area so unique is that it is one of the last remaining places where you can see real Geishas in Japan. Up and down these streets, you can keep your eyes open and see if you can catch a glimpse of a Geisha on her way to a tea house where exclusive guests enjoy an evening of traditional Japanese entertainment.

If you see a Maiko or Geiko in the streets, be respectful. They don’t mind if you take a picture, but they won’t stop and take a picture with you or stop to chat. If they’re on the street, they are on their way to work and don’t have time to dillydally. Let them go on their way, and just allow yourself to be an observer of their grandiose presence. The best time to spot Geisha is right before dinner time when they leave their homes to head to their private tea houses.

9. Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Upon a mountain, glowing orange against a sea of green trees is Kiyomizu-Dera Temple. This temple is one of the best places to visit in Kyoto to see traditional Japanese architecture. Kiyomizu-dera was founded here in 778, but most of the buildings you’ll see today were built in 1633. The name ‘Kiyomizu-dera’ comes from the waterfall which flows through the grounds since the word ‘Kiyoi mizu’ means pure water. I love this temple so much; visiting it feels like uncovering levels of beauty as you approach.

The walk up the hill towards the temple is full of antique shops selling brightly coloured goods, then you reach a bright red gate guarded by incredible statues. Inside you’ll see the gorgeous vermillion Koyasu Pagoda and, finally, the ancient wooden main hall. It was built without a single nail, and the veranda juts out 13 meters over the forest floor below with a view of the city below that is unrivalled!

10. Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavillion

Northwest of the city centre, you’ll find Kinkaku-ji, the Temple of the Golden Pavilion. Originally this incredible complex was built as a villa for one of the most influential statesmen in Kyoto. After many years it changed hands but eventually was converted into a Zen temple. The pavilion is one of the most popular tourist sites in Kyoto and draws millions of visitors a year. One of the reasons is the sheer power which this building holds. The top two storeys of the pavilion are covered in PURE gold leaf!

The juxtaposition of this against the simple and natural environment of the trees surrounding it feels like something out of a painting or Japanese woodcut print. While there are a lot of tourists who can take away from the zen-like experience, much like the Bamboo forest, it’s all about finding your way away from the crowds and enjoying those precious quiet moments you will manage while here.

11. The Philosopher’s Path

The Philosopher’s Path is one of the most magnificent exploratory walks you can experience in Kyoto. The path is located in the northern area of Higashiyama at the base of Kyoto’s East Mountain. It is a place to wander, to find yourself, to embrace peace and quiet and to see what makes Kyoto so unique as a city. The path follows the Lake Biwa Canal for around 29 kilometres at the base of the mountain. The trail is lined with cherry trees on either side. During the cherry blossom season, this is one of the most popular spots to come and view the spectacle.

12. Nanzen-ji Temple & Hōjō Gardens

Nanzen-ji Temple was built in 1291 for Emperor Kameyama on the site of his former palace. Inside you’ll find the Hōjō gardens, which are one of the best examples of “karesansui” gardens in Japan. They mirror the natural forms of their environment, and unlike many European gardens, they are 90% gravel. This might seem odd and ugly, but the result is a marriage of the natural environment and the man-made arts. Inside the Hōjō, you’ll find Japanese screen paintings with golden embellishments by Kanō Tan’yū, which are considered a National Treasure in Japan.

Bertrand Livraria

Bertrand Livraria is the oldest bookstore in the world. It was opened in 1732 and survived both the fire, earthquake and tsunami of 1755 which levelled much of Lisbon. Today it is standing like a quiet landmark in the middle of the busy city. There is only a small sign out front announcing its historic status. The blue and white tiles, which are so popular across Lisbon, are some of the most iconic and their tiled wall, from the 1700s is an incredible place to take a snapshot. I love the way they appear to bloom like flowers.

Alfama District

Alfama was one of the only neighbourhoods to entirely withstands the massive earthquake of 1755. This district is littered with historic houses as old as the city itself, cobblestone streets which are so worn down the stones are almost indistinguishable from each other as well as some of the most vibrant personalities the city has to offer. The squares of Alfama are alight with colourful banners and decorations as there always seems to be some sort of party or festival happening here. Mixed in with the ancient stones and tiles, the colours and breathtaking backdrops here are unreal.

Lavadouro Publico

In the Alfama neighbourhood, if you know where to look, you can step inside a historical public laundry facility. Inside are several large washing basins where adorable old ladies still wash and dry clothes, carpet and more for the neighbourhood. But what makes this place so neat, aside from the fact that it is a little piece of history frozen in time, are the colour block walls and the way the clothes which hang to dry create a pattern on the glass blocks separating the washing area from the drying racks.

Parc Eduardo VII

One of the first places we visited when we arrived in the city was Parc Eduardo VII. We landed super early in the morning, well before we were able to check into our Airbnb, and needed somewhere to relax and the park was one of the only things open. Parc Eduardo is located at the north end of the central downtown area. Constructed in 1902 the garden stretches over 26 hectares and over looks the Avenida da Liberdade. From the top of the long stretch of green grass and manicured bushes, you have a beautiful view of the Tagus river, and the city stretched out around it. From here not only do you have a fantastic view, but have a better idea of the size and scope of Lisbon.

Rua da Rosa in Bairro Alto

Bairro Alto is a neighbourhood which absolutely silent during the day, and yet at night, it explodes with life! It’s where you’ll find all the trendiest bars and the hottest night life. But during the day time, it’s a fantastically peaceful place to explore and admire the iconic Portuguese tiles and bright coloured apartment buildings. Walking down the streets you’ll hear only the sound of your footsteps and the occasion resident sweeping off their front steps.

Bica Elevator

The Bica Elevator is one of the most popular spots for a photo is Lisbon. And while it might seem overly touristy during the day, in the early morning this part of the Bica neighbourhood is absolutely stunning and provides incredible photography opportunities. The old tram began running 1892 to help the residents of Lisbon get up the steep hills upon which the city is built on top of. Although these trams and the surrounding neighbourhood are always heavily graffitied, this somehow only adds to the vibrant nature of the town and doesn’t detract from it.

Rua da Condessa

At the end of the Rua da Condessa, in Bairro Alto, you’ll find a long staircase, flanked on either side by dazzling buildings. In between the two buildings is framed on the most magnificent vistas in Lisbon. In the distance, high atop the hill is one of Lisbon’s old ruins, like the old guard looking down over the new city.

Miradouro de Santa Luzia

My favourite Miradouro is the Miradouro de Santa Luzia! Not only does it have one of the most spectacle views across Alfama and the Tagus river, but is also has a lush garden, incredible tile work veranda and lots of rich, blooming trees. No matter which way you’re looking, there is something absolutely magical to see here. This place gets mobbed during the day time, but if you arrive early enough (especially at sunset) you’ll be in for a real treat!

Carmo Convent

The Carmo Convent was once Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a Catholic convent located in the heart of Barrio Alto. Fires, earthquakes, political and religious upheaval all resulted in the convent falling to ruins, but thankfully no one had the funds to demolish it. In the later 20th century, it was converted into a museum and what was left of the structure was given supports to prevent its further degeneration. The interior of the convent, with it’s roofless view of the sky is breathtaking. If you’re lucky enough to be there at night or when there is an event, the interior is lit up to highlight the architectural details while the open rooftop provides stunning views of the stars above.

Jeronimos Monastery

The Jeronimos Monastery was built in the 15th century by King Manuel. Manuel used money the realm gained from explorations around the world to fund its construction. Portugal was known for its explorers and as such, made a lot of money from its imports. This meant the architect had a virtually unlimited budget for the construction. And it’s for this reason that we find this opulent, renaissance building we see today. No matter where you turn or where you look, there are exquisitely framed shots. Hidden in the details throughout the building are oceanic elements. Each one reflecting this strong seafaring country, and are a joy to discover as you explore.

Tower of Belém

The Tower of Belém is located along the scenic Tagus river. It was once a defensive system for Lisbon to help the military see any incoming ships into their harbour. The tower is both a military structure but also an architectural gem of the city. Standing in low tide, on the shores of the river, looking up at this tower is a magnificent sight to see. There’s no need to wait in the super long line and pay six euros to get inside. The view from the exterior is much prettier anyways and exploring it from all angles along the banks of the river is much more fun than waiting in line.

LX Factory

The LX Factory is located west of the city centre but easily accessible by Uber or metro. It’s a hipster mecca built in what used to be a 19th-century industrial site. This area has yet to be overrun with tourists. And, for now, is a calm, peaceful stretch of trendy stores and cute cafes. One of the best places to visit here is Ler Devagar. Ler Devagar is a charming bookshop built inside an old newspaper printing press facility. It feels like a mix between abandoned factory and Belle’s library from Beauty and the Beast.

Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara

My other favourite Miradouro is the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcantara. This stunning lookout also has a beautiful square, and nearby kiosk, where you can grab a Ginjinha to drink and sit watching the sunset. Often this square draws groups of musicians who preform traditional music for the crowds which gather. From here you can see across the entire city, over to St. George’s Castle and the surrounding hillside. Looking out at the view, drink in my hand and music in my ears, is honestly one of my favourite memories of the entire trip.

Pink Street

Located along the Ruo Nova Do Carvalho is where you’ll find the insta-famous ‘pink street’. At night this area acts as Lisbon’s ‘Red Light District.’ But during the day the charming pink-painted road makes everything a little less sinister. People have had a lot of opinions about this street, some recommending to skip visiting it. I think some people expected a pretty and pristine roadway as it appeared on some people’s feeds. But many Instagrammers highly photoshop their pictures in order for the road to look cleaner and empty.

So here is the real thing. No photoshopping. Here it is in the raw. I actually still thought it was super cute, as long as you know what to expect. I loved the way the colours on either side played off the road. It’s an adorable little spot to stumble upon when exploring downtown.

Pastéis de Belém

The Belem Monastery was where the recipe for Portuguese egg tarts was invented. These are now popular the world over but nowhere more than in Lisbon. You’ll find these sweet treats everywhere but Pastéis de Belém is where it all began, and you’d be remiss not to take a million pictures of these delicious treats before devouring them all. The shop they are sold in is in itself a becoming maze of white and blue tiles walls and smells heavenly. It’s a great place to sit and enjoy those sweet treats along with an espresso in hand, soaking up the atmosphere of this historic bakery.

Arco Da Rua Augusta

The entryway to Lisbon’s largest square can be found through the Arco Da Rua Augusta. The gateway opens up onto the Comercio Plaza which looks out over the Tagus River. This archway is located along one of the busiest streets in Lisbon and sometimes it can get annoyingly touristy. But if you arrive here early in the morning, you’ll be left only with the elegant scene of 18th century Lisbon.

Lisbon Story Arch

Located down a quiet staircase just nearby a busy tourist lookout point you’ll find the Lisbon Story Arch. It’s a bright and cheerful series of funny cartoons representing the history of Lisbon. In a city which is brimming with street art and graffiti, this is one of the best pieces which is not only a work of art but also gives you a little bit of history lesson to boot!

Sintra

Sintra is located just 45 minutes by train outside the city, and 30 minutes by car. This village is home to some of the most incredible castles and historical buildings around Lisbon, and it feels like living inside a fairytale. Pena Palace is the most fantastical of all the structures and whose colours seem to beam across Sintra’s skyline. It’s probably the most popular photographed spot in all of Portugal and as such is bursting with tourists. Get here as early as possible, a few minutes before opening if you can, and you’ll find it to be so much more enjoyable than only an hour or two later when you can barely move for the people. And who can blame them for all coming, it really is as amazing as you hear it is!

TIP: To get the best pictures here without too many people in your shot, head down to Harajuku as early as possible. For most of the photos in the first part of this tour, you don’t need to enter any shops or business so you won’t need to worry about opening times. By the time you get to the second half of this tour, most of the businesses will be open and you can get those interior shots.

Meiji Jingu Sake Barrels

Right before the entrance to Harajuku, if you stroll down the peaceful pathways towards the Meiji Jingu Shrine, you’ll find this incredible display of painted Sake barrels! These are called ‘kazaridaru‘ and are barrels from brewers all over Japan who donate them to the temple as offerings to the Gods and the people of Japan. The scenes painted upon them are breathtaking and make for a rainbow backdrop for your pictures. This is the one more traditional parts of the tour and a nice way to begin your morning in this relaxing and quiet little forest in the middle of the city.

Entrance to Takeshita Street

Takeshita Street is the main entrance into Harajuku. It is a busy pedestrian shopping lane where no cars are allowed after 9 am. Despite the lack of vehicles, this street is always filled with people, crowds so thick you’ll barely be able to make out the road below. But if you arrive as early as we did (around 7:30 am) you’ll be treated to an almost abandoned looking laneway. The entrance to the street is decorated over its archway with a different brightly coloured design made out of balloons. This archway is the perfect frame for your photo into Harajuku.

Totti Candy Factory

If you’ve ever spent some time cruising the #Harajuku hashtag on instagram, you’re bound to have seen dozens of pictures of cute girls smiling with GIANT rainbow cotton candy cones. These awesome creations can be found at Totti Candy Factory. While there is often a line-up, it moves quickly, and while waiting in line, you can observe the candy creators inside moulding these incredible sweet treats. They are gorgeous to look at and even better to eat! But before digging in be sure to snap a pic of this sugary mountain of colour!

Santa Monica Crepes

It might seem like a recent phenomenon since the creation of Instagram and “food selfies”, but crepes have been a Japanese fascination for over 40 years. Now, you’ll pass many different crepe shops, each with dozens of flavours showcased with intricately designed plastic models. Each shop seems to want to outdo the other in these amazing designs and decorations, and they make for great photo taking stops! I love Santa Monica Crepes because of their bright pink exterior, neon signage and rainbow coloured crepes in the window!

Design Festa Gallery

The Design Festa Gallery is located on the backstreets of Harajuku. Inside this incredible building is an urban art gallery featuring young new artists from Tokyo. And while the interior with all the fantastic art is worth checking out, the building itself is what draws so many people to it. A group of local artists took it upon themselves to reignite this otherwise dull building with a slew of hypnotic graffiti and a series of frenetic scaffolding which feels like an alien attempting to swallow the building whole.

Sakura Tei

Just down from the Design Festa Gallery, you’ll find Sakura-Tei, one of the city’s most popular restaurants. Just outside the restaurant is one of Harajuku’s incredible graffiti walls, commissioned by the restaurant. The restaurant itself has a gorgeous interior which continues in from the street, but if you aren’t interested in the dining experience, you can still come and admire the facade’s spray-painted mural, covered in iconic Japanese imagery.

Now is Forever

Further up the backstreet of Harajuku, you’ll find the “NOW IS FOREVER” mural. This incredible work of art was painted by an American artist, Stephen Powers in 2014. Japan appreciates graffiti art when done well and cares for them greatly, with locals even doing some of the paint touch ups. Despite this mural being so old it looks like it’s brand new and the message is a beautiful one which makes for a great little photo op!

Eddy’s Ice Cream

Eddy’s Ice Cream is located down a tiny side street inside what looks like a San Francisco style pastel townhouse. The interior is miniature, but its neon pink painted walls and brightly coloured ice creams are more than enough to make it feel larger than life. It’s so hard to pick between a shot of the outside or inside; so you’ll have to do both!

Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku

As you walk towards the intersection between Omotesando and Harajuku, you’ll find it’s hard to miss Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku. This incredible building houses all the high-end fashion brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Gucci and Chanel, but we aren’t here for the clothes. As you approach, your eyes will be immediately caught by the dazzling kaleidoscope of mirrors that serves as the entrance to the mall. They call this the stargate, and with good reason. The artist Hiroshi Nakamura wanted the building to reflect, “the time and the seasons, for an ever-changing view.” Standing outside or in, you can see all around the crossing — the people, the landscape and the colours that change within it.

Honey Mi Honey Cafe

Honey Mi Honey is a famous apparel brand, but the real draw is their cafe located right beside their shop in Harajuku. This cafe was designed for Instagrammers and is themed as a retro motel. You can order up adorable pastries and drink organic smoothies while sitting in this pastel paradise. Reservations are required since this place is so popular, but if you have the forethought to book in advance, it makes the experience much less stressful as you can roll up and take pictures to your heart’s content without standing in line for hours.

Alice on Wednesday

Walking down the street from Honey Mi Honey, you’ll come upon a tiny doorway which leads you into a whimsical little world. Alice On Wednesday is one of a few different Alice in Wonderland themed stores and restaurants in Tokyo. Inside this shop, you’ll uncover three floors, each one designed to reflect aspects of the fairy tale. But it’s the doorway to this place which is the star of the show. This small doorway, fit for a miniature Alice, on the front of the building makes you crouch down to get inside the shop. It looks like something right out of a story book and is almost too cute to be real. So you’ve got to share it right?!

Blind Whino is one of those locations which I feel like I’ve seen hundreds of time over the years on sites like MyModernMet and BoredPanda. But seeing it in real life, not just online, is something spectacular. The buildings is a renovated church painted with wild and wonderful colours and patterns. Be sure to step inside, many come here simply to take a picture of the exterior and head off but the interior is just as interesting and dynamic. There are often art shows on display so check their website for a list of gallery hours.

GreenWorks Flowers

Walking up to this shop was like walking into a dream. This cotton candy pink florist shop is always decked out for the season. At Christmas, it is dripping with fairy lights and baubles. Halloween is a surprisingly spooky affair. During the rest of the year, the entire exterior is always looking like a secret garden exploding out from the window boxes. I was bummed to see that the interior is pretty much just like any other florist shop and not some wild ‘Alice in Wonderland‘ but the exterior is what you’ll come to see anyways.

Smithsonian Museum of Natural History

The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is one of the most iconic museums in the world. Walking inside you’re greeted by one of the most important pieces of the collection, the giant African bull elephant. It stands in the middle of the incredible neoclassical domed rotunda. This building was constructed in 1910. And is still to this day one of the best examples of American Beaux-Arts architecture.

City Center DC

City Center DC is a five-block area of the city which is a collection of apartments and office buildings, but on the ground level, features some of the most exclusive and illustrious brands displayed in picturesque window displays. The main thoroughfare in CityCenter is always decorated for the season or for a particular event. Whether it’s hanging lanterns, rainbow umbrellas or a giant reindeer at Christmas time, the alley along Palmer street is always a favourite among photographers.

Library of Congress

The Library of Congress is, in my opinion, the most beautiful building in D.C. The inside is breathtaking and a perfect spot for some fantastic photos. The incredible and grandiose design of the library, now named the Thomas Jefferson Building, was inspired by the Paris Opera House. And it’s artistic and theatrical inspiration can be seen throughout. Inside the grey facade, you’ll be wowed by the multitude of colours painted on the ceiling frescoes and the fascinating sculptures peeking out from behind ornate marble columns.

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath

Hidden behind the high fashion brands and hipster cafes in Georgetown, there is a natural oasis along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. This canal was once used as a tow path where barges once came to delivery their cargo. On either side of the canal are some of the oldest buildings in Georgetown, providing a beautiful backdrop of the overgrowth and peaceful waterway.

Georgetown’s Candy Coloured Houses

In a cozy, quiet area in Georgetown, there are rows of streets dotted with pastel coloured houses. The shutters and doors are often painted in contrasting colours to make all those little architectural details stand out. I would recommend walking along O Street or N Street, starting at the University and then making your way towards Wisconsin Ave NW. They are not only beautifully painted but also incredibly preserved historical houses and walking this path feels like stepping back in time.

U.S. Botanic Garden

This is the place to come to feel like you’re in the tropics even if it’s blistering cold outside. The U.S. Botanic Garden is constantly changing with different plants in bloom. There is always something blooming or growing depending on the seasons so there’s always something incredible to see. The gardens are divided into various sections based on their temperature, region or what the plants are used for. There is a room dedicated entirely to medicinal plants. And it’s so interesting to see how plants are still used to this very day to help heal people despite all the advances in modern medicine. My favourite room for photos is ‘The Tropics‘ where huge Swiss cheese looking leaves hang from giant trees. And the air tastes almost taste sweet from the constantly growing flora. The glass windows of the greenhouse make for some incredible shots, not to be missed.

The Capitol Building

The Capital Building is one of the most iconic views in Washington, and no matter the weather or time of year, this place is incredibly stunning. It’s round, layered dome atop the pristine white columned building sticks up, high above the other buildings surrounding it. There are so many different viewpoints of the Capital Buildings all over the city but my favourite is down Pennsylvania Avenue.

East Capitol St NE & First St SE, Washington, DC 20004

Lincoln Reflecting Pool

There are so many incredible sights to be seen in the National Mall. But the Reflecting Pool is one of those locations that, day or night, is an awesome site for beautiful pictures which scream, “I’m in Washington!” The reflection of the surrounding trees and monuments, mirrored back at you from the waters is so compelling. And one can really appreciate how something so simple can be something so powerful.

Cherry Blossoms around the Waterfront

The National Cherry Blossom Festival is a spring celebration in Washington, D.C. The blossoms are usually at their best in mid April. But be sure to check the site for when they’ll be in full bloom as it changes every year. The trees you can see surrounding the Tidal Basin beside the National Mall were gifts from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo City. The banks of the Tidal Basin are one of the best spots to visit as you can not only take pictures of the pale pink blossoms but also have a great opportunity to see the Thomas Jefferson Memorial across the still waters.

Kogod Courtyard National Portrait Gallery

The National Portrait Gallery is a great place to see one of the most impressive collections of portraiture in America. But the Kogod Courtyard inside is a great spot for a portrait of your own! The massive courtyard is an architectural masterpiece and a place of serenity in a busy, loud city like Washington.

Capitol Hill Books

Packed to the gills with paperbacks, hardcovers and magazines, Capitol Hill Books is nestled in the historic Eastern Market area. The exterior of the shop’s window, piled high with books, looks like a patchwork quilt and makes for a great snapshot of the kind of adorable shops which Georgetown is so famous for.

Cannaregio

Cannaregio is located far north of the centre of Venice and as such is more hidden away and free of the tourists which flock to San Marco. Here you’ll find some incredible gardens which have been tended to by locals for centuries. They are overgrown and wild and seamlessly blend into the buildings. Almost like a secret garden.

Ca’ D’oro

The Ca’ d’Oro or the golden house is so named because of the gilt decorations which once adorned its walls. Although these have long faded, the building is still one of the most incredible examples of Gothic architecture in Venice. The views inside the old manor house offer sumptuous textures and patterns formed in marble. From the outdoor porch facing the waterway you can nab some of the most stunning views of the Grand Canal.

Mercato di Rialto

The Mercato di Rialto, or Venice Marketplace, is where you’ll find heaps of colourful Italian fruit and vegetables, laid out like piles brightly coloured gemstones. Stacked underneath vibrant red awnings, behind smiling Venetian farmers, the smells of the market are almost as strong as the picturesque produce.

Rialto Bridge

The Rialto Bridge is the most famous of the four iconic bridges along the Venetian Grand Canal. There are always lots of tourists on the bridge, but if you visit early in the morning you have the best chance of seeing it without a huge mob. I like to photograph the bridge on the approach from the Grand Canal vaporetto, with dramatic views of gondolas cruising in front.

San Polo

San Polo is the smallest neighbourhood in Venice and one of the oldest parts of the city. As such, you can wander these alleyways and tiny canals to find some of the most ancient and yet fantastically colourful compositions. The layers of brick and stucco, changing surfaces and colours from the various years of construction make for a charming patchwork quilt of textures.

Ponte Accademie

Standing atop the Ponte Accademie, you have an iconic view of the Grand Canal and some of the most gorgeous architectural masterpieces of Venice. The contrasting colours along this portion of the canal are stunning, the blues of the water, against golden painted Gothic facades and red and white striped paline poles where gondolas dock look like something out of a painting.

Grand Canal

The Grand Canal is obviously one of the most photographed parts of Venice. No trip here is completed without a view across these majestic waters. Early morning, as the sun has begun to rise, I think is the time best time since the golden light cast upon the buildings is nothing but fantastic. Hop on one of the Grand Canal’s vaporettos and get a seat up front for the best vantage point as you float down the most scenic waterway in Europe.

Little Canals

The Grand Canal may be what you expect to see when you come to Venice but their baby sisters are those unexpected surprises which makes you fall in love. The air is full of intrigue as gondolas glide across the aquamarine waters between tightly packed quarters. Looking over the railing of whichever bridge you’re standing on it’s almost impossible not to feel like you’ve fallen into a dream. The Little Canals are like the those precious side streets in all European cities which are a haven away from the throngs of tourists and where you’ll find all the locals having a drink in the mid afternoon.

Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute

The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute is one of the most incredible buildings in Venice, but turn your back to it for a second and you’ll be surprised what you see. Bobbing up and down in the waters are beautiful black lacquered gondolas set against a backdrop of unbelievable Gothic architecture. It’s a rather simple scene but one which I find immensely charming.

San Giorgio Maggiore

San Giorgio Maggiore is an island situated right across from St. Mark’s Square. Although the island also has some incredible places to visit, there is nothing like sitting on the water edge and looking out at the entirety St. Mark’s Square. From here you have a completely clear panoramic view of this side of the city. It not only makes for an incredible photo but also helps you orientate yourself when you visit the square itself.

St. Mark’s Square

St. Mark’s Square is the heart at which the entirety of Venice was built around. It is where you’ll find many of the most popular tourist destinations, and for good reason. The stunning red brick bell tower in the middle of the square, photographed against a bright blue sky, is always a superbly constructed picture and one which screams, “Venice!”

Cafes in San Marco

There are two iconic cafes in St. Mark’s Square which might cost a pretty penny but are absolutely free to look at. The yellow and red chairs of the respective cafes are like an artistic pattern across the cobblestone exteriors of St. Mark’s Square. The set up looks best in the morning when the chairs aren’t full of tourists on their phones so best to come early in the morning.

Basilica San Marco

St. Mark’s Basilica is the essence of Venice. Bright, colourful and artistic. Although the square in front of the Basilica gets immensely crowded during the day, it’s easy enough to get close up to photograph some of the vibrant mosaics on the exterior which the Basilica is so famous for. At sunrise or sunset, the colours reflecting off the glass mosaics are incredible so if you’re an early bird or night owl you’re in for a treat.

Doge’s Palace

Both the interior and exterior of the Doge’s Palace looks like something out of a Gothic fairy tale. While the outside is stunning, with its rose marble and intricate floral traceries, I love the interior for its peaceful atmosphere. Since getting inside requires admission you’ll find yourself, most days, escaping the hoards of people outside. In here, you can hear your footsteps on the cobblestones and are surrounded by some of the most incredible architecture anywhere in Venice. A picture from in here looks like you’ve stepped inside a castle all to yourself.

Bridge of Sighs

Beside the Basilica, around the corner from the Doge’s Palace, is the Bridge of Sighs. This bridge was once used by prisoners as the gateway between the city courts and their prison cells. For prisoners sentenced to death, this was their last chance to look out at blue waters of Venice. The haunting history of the bridge makes it a powerful picture in itself but the bright white marble set against the blue sky and neon teal waters of the canal is what makes it superb.

Riva Degli Schiavone

The Riva Degli Schiavone is located right in front of St. Mark’s square and is where you can see some of the most gorgeous gondolas moored, awaiting riders to journey along the Grand Canal. The exquisite green street lamps of Venice with their pink Murano glass frame the skyline perfectly as you look out at San Giorgio Maggiore .

Burano Island

Stepping outside of the main island is so important when visiting Venice. Burano is one of the most popular side islands due to it’s multi-coloured fisherman’s village. These houses are home to both some of the cities best fishermen as well as the famous lace makers which produce some of Italy’s finest lace. The houses along the canals are each painted a different colour, and bright colours at that. They make for some of the most exciting and dynamic pictures and are well worth the 45-minute boat ride out to the island.

Murano Island

Murano, a sister island to Burano, is much less popular but no less incredible. The island is most notable for its glass blowing craftspeople but what I love it for are their dramatically colourful alleyways and residences. Hidden away from the main canal, you’ll find these secret passageways leading you throughout the rural homes of real Venetians. Covered in rich textiles and vibrant shudders they make for incredible photographs.

In truth, there is no street or canal in Venice which doesn’t make for the most incredible photograph but if you want to set a challenge for yourself and find the most beautiful locations the city has to offer I hope you found this list helpful!
