This one-day counterclockwise drive around the Ring of Kerry starts and ends in Killarney, looping through wild coastal cliffs, peaceful villages, ancient ruins, and breathtaking viewpoints. The counterclockwise route is recommended to avoid the heavy tour bus traffic that tends to move in the opposite direction. It also gives easier access to scenic pull-offs and narrower roads, especially around the Skellig Ring and Kerry Cliffs.

The total driving distance is about 110 km (68 miles), which would take roughly 3.5 – 4 hours of driving time without stops. But you’ll absolutely want to build in 6 to 8 hours (basically your entire day) to allow time to get out and explore. This drive isn’t about racing from point to point, it’s about pausing at windswept cliffs, wandering through ruined abbeys, having lunch by the sea, and soaking in the beauty of Ireland’s wild southwest at your own pace.

The region’s history begins well before the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Evidence of Neolithic and Bronze Age life is scattered throughout the landscape, standing stones, ogham-inscribed stones, and stone ringforts like those at Cahergall and Leacanabuaile. These early inhabitants lived off the land and sea, and left behind enigmatic monuments that still draw curiosity and reverence today.

By the 6th century, monastic settlements had emerged in remote locations, most famously on Skellig Michael, the rocky island just off the western coast. There, ascetic monks carved a life from stone, building beehive huts and clinging to a life of devotion in what they saw as the edge of the known world. On the mainland, the spread of Christianity brought abbeys like Muckross and Ballinskelligs, while Gaelic chieftains built fortified ringforts and later stone tower houses to assert power over fertile valleys and coastal trade routes.

Killarney → Kerry Woollen Mills

Your journey begins in Killarney, a town steeped in charm, known for its colourful streets, friendly locals, and deep ties to Ireland’s natural and cultural heritage. Grab a coffee from a local café, stroll through the early-morning stillness of the town centre, or take a few minutes to admire the nearby cathedral before hitting the road.

A short drive west leads you to Kerry Woollen Mills, one of Ireland’s many traditional woollen mills. Nestled in the lush Gweestin Valley, the mill has been producing wool since the 17th century and remains family-owned to this day. Visitors can watch the weaving process, learn about the history of Irish wool production, and browse beautifully crafted textiles, from scarves and blankets to traditional Aran jumpers.

Leaving the warmth of the mill behind, follow the quiet country road westward as the landscape begins to open up. Just before reaching Glenbeigh, make a brief detour to the River Caragh Viewing Point, a peaceful lay-by overlooking one of Kerry’s most picturesque salmon rivers. Here, the River Caragh winds gracefully through the valley, its banks lined with alder and willow. Depending on the season, you might spot anglers casting flies or see the sunlight glittering off fast-moving shallows. It’s a great little stop to stretch your legs, snap a few photos, and take in the calm, pastoral scenery that defines this part of the drive.

→ Rossbeigh Beach Overlook

From here, you continue along to the Rossbeigh Beach Overlook, where the inland serenity gives way to the vastness of Dingle Bay. Ringforts

Ringforts, or ráthanna in Irish, were common in early medieval Ireland, dating roughly from 500 to 1000 AD. These circular settlements were home to farming families and their livestock, enclosed by earthen banks or stone walls for defence. The design wasn’t necessarily for warfare, but more for keeping animals in, intruders out, and daily life protected from the elements. Think of them as a blend of homestead and stronghold, a social and economic hub for small kinship groups.

Cahergall is the more imposing of the two. With walls up to 3 metres thick and nearly 6 metres high, it’s easy to see how it might have conveyed status and strength. Inside, you’ll find stone stairways, narrow passageways, and raised platforms that hint at the layout of early dwellings. A short walk away lies Leacanabuaile, slightly smaller but equally intriguing. This fort is more complex in layout, with interior divisions suggesting domestic and agricultural use. Standing within its circular walls, it’s easy to imagine a smoky hearth, the sound of goats, and the rhythms of a life lived close to the land.

Lunch in Cahersiveen

Set on the banks of the River Fertha, the colourful town of Cahersiveen is one of the largest settlements on the Ring of Kerry, yet it still retains a friendly, village-like charm. It’s best known as the birthplace of Daniel O’Connell, Ireland’s “Great Liberator,” whose legacy is honoured with a rare distinction, the Daniel O’Connell Memorial Church, the only Catholic church in Ireland named after a layperson.

This is also an ideal stop for lunch, especially if you’re craving something local and fresh. Head to Quinlan & Cooke’s Seafood Restaurant, a much-loved spot run by a family of fishmongers-turned-restaurateurs. The menu celebrates the Atlantic’s daily catch, think creamy shellfish bisque, plump Atlantic prawns, and classic fish and chips served with a zingy tartar sauce. It’s casual but classy, and one of the best places in Kerry to taste the sea itself. Pair your meal with a pint or a glass of crisp white wine, and you’ll be well-fuelled for the coastal roads ahead.

→ Kerry Cliffs & Skellig Ring

As the road winds south along the coast, take the turn for the Skellig Ring, a lesser-travelled detour with some of the most jaw-dropping scenery in Ireland. One of the highlights is the Kerry Cliffs (Aillte Chiarraí), towering over 300 feet above the wild Atlantic. From this vantage point, you can see across to Skellig Michael and Little Skellig, two rocky outcrops that seem to rise out of the sea like something from a myth.

The cliffs are privately owned but accessible for a small fee, and the viewing platforms offer both safety and unforgettable photo opportunities. The Skellig Ring road is narrow and winding but well worth the drive, few places feel as remote, rugged, and cinematic.

→ Waterville

Known for its connection to Charlie Chaplin, who holidayed here regularly, Waterville has a relaxed, vintage feel. For a mid-day break, step into the welcoming Beachcove Café, just across from the seafront. Cosy and casual, it’s the perfect place to pause over a snack or light lunch. Try one of their toasted paninis, a freshly baked scone with jam and cream, or simply a strong coffee and sweet treat to tide you over.

Cahersiveen→ Whitestrand Beach

Just a short drive east of Waterville lies Killeen Beach, a peaceful, lesser-known stretch of sand nestled between the road and the wild Atlantic. Backed by low dunes and framed by craggy headlands, it offers a more rugged, untamed feel than many of Kerry’s better-known beaches. The sand is soft and golden, scattered with sea-polished stones and shells, and the views out toward Ballinskelligs Bay are wide and soul-stirring.

→ Sneem

Continue east through lush green countryside to the village of Sneem, known for its colourful buildings, riverside paths, and welcoming vibe. The town is divided by a charming stone bridge over the River Sneem and surrounded by mountains on one side and sea on the other. Sneem is a wonderful place to stop for a treat from a local bakery or browse artisan shops filled with pottery, woollens, and handmade goods. Public art and sculpture dot the village, giving it a quirky, creative energy that makes it stand out from other stops along the Ring.

→ Moll’s Gap

As the road climbs into the hills, you’ll arrive at Moll’s Gap, a windswept mountain pass carved by glaciers during the last Ice Age. From the viewpoint, you’ll see sweeping vistas of the Black Valley and MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, Ireland’s highest mountain range. Moll’s Gap is named after Moll Kissane, who supposedly ran an illegal shebeen (pub) here in the 1820s. Today, it’s home to an Avoca café and shop, where you can warm up with coffee and enjoy one of the best views in Kerry. The road is narrow but paved, and the views are spectacular in every direction.

→ Looscaunagh Lough Viewpoint

Just beyond Moll’s Gap lies the Looscaunagh Lough Viewpoint, a quiet roadside stop overlooking a small, reflective lake surrounded by rocky hills. Often shrouded in mist, the scene is one of those peaceful, postcard-perfect views that stays with you long after you leave. It’s an ideal place for a quick photo or to simply breathe in the cool, fresh air. The lake’s still surface mirrors the sky, making it especially beautiful on calm days.

→ Torc Waterfall

Descending toward Killarney National Park, take a short detour to Torc Waterfall, a 20-metre cascade nestled in a mossy woodland. A brief uphill walk from the car park leads you to the falls, where water tumbles over layers of dark sandstone into a forest pool. The waterfall is especially powerful after rain and is surrounded by ancient oak and yew trees. It’s a magical place that feels more enchanted than touristy, despite its popularity.

→ Muckross Abbey

End your journey at Muckross Abbey, a serene 15th-century Franciscan monastery located within Killarney National Park. The abbey is remarkably well preserved, with roofless stone halls, vaulted cloisters, and a central courtyard wrapped around a centuries-old yew tree. Tucked deep within the wooded heart of Killarney National Park, Muckross Abbey is a hauntingly beautiful ruin with roots that stretch back nearly six centuries. Founded in 1448 for the Observantine Franciscans, the abbey was once a thriving centre of monastic life, quiet, austere, and deeply connected to the rhythms of nature. Despite suffering repeated attacks and burnings during the Cromwellian conquest, its bones remain remarkably intact, offering a rare glimpse into Ireland’s medieval religious past.

As you approach along the shaded path, the abbey reveals itself slowly, moss-covered stone walls rising from the forest floor, ivy creeping along ancient mortar, and the quiet crunch of leaves underfoot. Step through the arched entrance and you’re transported. Inside, the central cloister immediately draws the eye. It’s built around a magnificent yew tree, its gnarled branches stretching skyward through the open roof like a symbol of endurance. Local legend holds that this tree is as old as the abbey itself.

Wander through the roofless nave and chancel, where shafts of sunlight spill through arched windows, illuminating the worn tombstones embedded in the floor. You’ll find the final resting places of Gaelic chieftains and local nobility, including poets from the O’Donoghue clan, whose presence in Kerry dates back centuries. The upper floors, accessed by narrow stone staircases, offer atmospheric views over the cloister and out to the surrounding trees, places where monks once studied, prayed, or kept watch in silence.

Don’t miss the reliquary niches, small recessed spaces likely used for storing sacred items, or the intricately carved stone sedilia, a seat built into the chancel wall for officiating clergy. Even in ruin, the abbey is deeply expressive, weathered stone softened by moss, shadows moving gently across the worn thresholds.

History of Blarney Castle

The site where Blarney Castle now stands has been a place of profound historical significance since the 10th century. The current Blarney Castle, the third structure on the site, has a rich and unique history. The first building, a wooden structure, was erected around the 10th century, followed by a stone fortification in 1210.

The current Castle was constructed in 1446 by Dermot McCarthy, the King of Munster, and reflects medieval Ireland’s typical tower house style. The structure features typical elements of the time, such as thick stone walls, narrow staircases for defence, and towers with various lookout points. Defence was integral to Blarney Castle, as it was built strategically to protect the southwestern approaches to Cork. Blarney Castle saw numerous historical conflicts throughout the years, especially during the Irish struggles against English rule. The castle was seized by Oliver Cromwell‘s forces in the mid-17th century, but it was later retaken by the Irish under Charles II.

The Blarney Stone

The Castle’s legacy is best known for possessing the famed Blarney Stone. Legend has it that kissing the stone bestows the kisser with the gift of eloquence. But you might ask, how? Well, there are different variations to explain this so-called phenomenon. One of the most popular legends about the stone’s origins involves Cormac McCarthy. It is said that McCarthy engaged in a lawsuit and appealed to the goddess Clíodhna, who told him to kiss the first stone he found on his way to court for luck. He did so, won his case, and believed the stone was lucky; McCarthy has the stone later incorporated into the Castle’s battlements. Another legend says that the goddess Clíodhna gifted the stone to the Castle’s lord as a token of gratitude for his deeds, and she embued the stone with her magical powers to impart eloquence to anyone who kissed it.

Is Kissing the Stone Worth the Wait?

While kissing the Blarney Stone is considered a must-do for many visitors to Ireland, thanks to its legendary promise and famed, the lineup to kiss the stone can wind all around the gardens! Arriving early in the morning is your best bet to get in quickly before the hoards of bus tours arrive. But even with an early arrival, the line was still at least 45 minutes on the day we visited. And when we left, it was well over an hour and a half! If you’re short on time, waiting in line for more than an hour might not seem the best way to spend your time. The line moves slowly, and the Castle itself is pretty barren, without much to entertain you, so be sure to bring a book or download a podcast to enjoy while you wait.

If you feel your trip to Ireland won’t be complete without kissing the stone, it’s likely worth the wait. But for those who may be less inclined, let me tell you, there are plenty of other enchanting sights and experiences that are equally, if not even more, interesting. Most tourists here only come to kiss the stone and then have to leave. However, the ancient druid heritage concealed inside the beautiful grounds and gardens is a hidden gem that most tourists fail to notice. So, on this self-guided tour of Blarney Castle, don’t be afraid to skip the castle if the line is too long. Instead, focus on investigating these unexplored areas of the gardens!

Cafe

If you’ve followed my advice and arrived early in the morning, be sure to stop inside the cafe just after the entrance to grab a coffee or tea to take with you as you wander the grounds. Although this won’t be allowed inside any of the buildings, it is great to grab as you meander around the lush gardens and historic structures.

River Martin

As you continue on the pathway that leads you into the grounds, you’ll cross a charming bridge over the River Martin, which flows through the grounds of Blarney Castle. This charming river contributes significantly to the natural beauty surrounding the historic castle, and if you are there on a particularly quiet day, take a moment to enjoy the peaceful ambiance before heading towards the castle.

Bagpipers

As you cross the bridge and get closer to the enormous stone structure, you might be treated to the sounds of bagpipes as you approach. Well, some of you might be delighted, I guess bagpipes are an acquired musical taste. Although I thought bagpipes were a Scottish tradition, bagpipes are not exclusive to Scotland and are found in various forms throughout many cultures across Europe, North Africa, and even parts of Asia. The sound of this haunting, beautiful music echoing across the green countryside is one of the most awe-inspiring and nice to hear when exploring this historic site.

Watchkeepers Lookout

Adjacent to Blarney Castle in Ireland is a small watch tower that vigilantly surveys the estate. From here, guards could keep an eye on the countryside for invaders.

Inside Blarney Castle

As you step into the castle, just beyond the small tourist kiosk, your gaze will fall upon the ruins of the old Mansion House. These remnants once formed part of the Gothic court apartments of James Jefferey, constructed in the early 17th century. However, the original structure proved too uncomfortable for Jefferey and his family, leading to the construction of the grander mansion in 1739. Sadly, this wing of the castle was destroyed by fire in the 18th century, leaving behind only the weathered stone ruins that stand as a silent reminder of its storied past.

Beneath your feet, as you stand gazing at the ruins of the Mansion House, lies a network of labyrinthine tunnels. These passages once led to the castle’s dungeons, where prisoners were confined, and troops could discreetly retreat during a siege. Hidden within this maze was the infamous oubliette, a 15-foot stone pit cleverly concealed by a movable stone cover. If an unsuspecting intruder ventured too close, a guard could activate a lever, causing the stone to drop away and sending the intruder tumbling into the dark, inescapable hole below. As the name suggests, those who fell into the oubliette were destined to be “forgotten.”

Great Hall

The castle is a classic example of 15th-century fortifications, boasting five storeys with ancillary chambers branching off from each level. As you step inside, one of the first things you’ll notice is the dramatic drop in temperature, thanks to the castle’s impressive 18-foot-thick walls at the base. These massive walls not only provide a sturdy foundation but also make the castle highly defensible. Within this historic structure, you’ll find the enormous 17th-century fireplace, a feature that once served as the heart of the household. This fireplace was not only the main source of warmth but also the focal point where visitors would have been welcomed upon their arrival.

Earl’s Room

Just above the wooden stairs that lead you to the tower from the Great Hall is the Earl’s Bedroom. It might seem surprising for an earl to have such a small bedroom, but this room was more strategic than it was for comfort. The large window looking out over the country would allow the Earl to survey his land and keep an eye out for invaders.

Climbing the Tower Stairs

To reach the Blarney Stone, you’ll need to climb 128 steps within an incredibly narrow stone tower. If you have mobility issues or claustrophobia, be aware that this part of the tour might be challenging. Having climbed many old towers during my travels, I can confidently say these are some of the smallest and most slippery steps I’ve ever encountered. Fortunately, a sturdy rope is provided to help you steady yourself as you ascend.

The narrow staircase isn’t a result of poor design but rather a clever defensive feature. Its tight construction allowed defenders to control access, as only one person could ascend at a time. Any misstep on the back foot would almost certainly result in a tumble down the steep spiral, making it an effective deterrent during an attack.

As you make your way up the tower, you’ll come across small chambers branching off the staircase. These empty ruins hold fascinating stories of the castle’s past, with placards offering insights into how each room was used during its prime. It’s worth pausing along the way to explore these hidden corners before continuing your climb to the top and the famous Blarney Stone.

Garderobe

As you make your way up, keep an eye out for one of the three remaining garderobes tucked inside the tower walls. These early indoor lavatories were cleverly positioned on the north side of the tower to ensure that the prevailing winds carried waste water away from the castle. In their original state, they featured simple wooden seats. Today, all that remains is a small slit in the stonework, offering an intriguing glimpse into the practical design of medieval life.

At the top of the tower, standing along the battlements, you can truly feel the power of the wind. On particularly blustery days, you might need to brace yourself to maintain your balance and avoid a stumble.

But the view from up here is incredible. While you wait in line, inching towards the famed Blarney Stone, take in the stunning views across the lush countryside.

Legend of the Blarney Stone

The main draw of Blarney Castle is the chance to kiss the iconic Blarney Stone, which is said to grant the kisser the gift of eloquence. Its origins are steeped in fascinating legends. Some say it was a gift from the goddess Clíodhna, while others believe it was a token of gratitude from a witch rescued from drowning. Another tale links the stone to biblical lore, claiming it to be the “Stone of Ezel,” brought to Ireland during the Crusades. Some even suggest the very stone gushed water when Moses struck it. Regardless of which story you choose to believe, there is no denying that the myths surrounding the Blarney Stone have enchanted Ireland and its visitors for generations!

Kissing the Blarney Stone

Kissing the Blarney Stone is no simple task and involves a bit of physical effort. Visitors must lean backward over a gap in the castle’s parapet while holding onto iron rails for support. This unique challenge has added to the stone’s legendary charm, turning the tradition into an adventurous experience. Although the process is completely safe, those with a fear of heights might feel a bit unsteady as they tilt back over the castle’s edge.

Take a minute after kissing the stone to look down into the castle and see all the different floors. Originally, there would have been a wooden pitched roof over the top of the tower, but that has long been lost to history and time, leaving the bones of the castle all that’s left.

Chapel, Banqueting Hall & Family Room

As you descend from the Blarney Stone, you’ll exit via the staircase on the opposite side of the castle. This path leads you to a spacious room once housed the Banqueting Hall. At the heart of this grand space would have stood a massive oak table, where the Clan Chieftain and his guests gathered for feasts and lively conversation. A roaring fire would have been the centrepiece of the hall, with fish and fowl roasting over the flames. The sound of music, particularly the melodies of a harp, would have filled the room, reverberating off the castle’s thick stone walls, bringing warmth and life to the gathering.

In the 17th century, after a fire destroyed the mansion, the Banqueting Hall was converted into a chapel where the household would gather to attend Latin Mass. On the south side of this room is one of the most fascinating features of the castle, a surviving section of a 17th-century frieze. This beautiful artwork once covered the entire room, providing a glimpse into the decorative grandeur of the past.

Young Ladies’ Bedroom & Priests Room

The spiral staircase winding its way up one of the castle’s two towers leads you to the Young Ladies’ Bedroom, a charming and historically significant space. This room served as the private quarters for the daughters of the Lord of Muskerry during his reign. It was here that the young women would have lived, slept, and perhaps embroidered or read by the light streaming in through the narrow stone windows.

Murder Hole

Before reaching the ground floor, take a moment to look down at your feet to spot the “murder hole,” now covered by an iron grate. Originally, this hole would have been concealed by a stone slab, serving as a deadly defensive feature during an attack. If enemies attempted to breach the castle, guards stationed above would have dropped hot coals, heavy stones, or boiling tar through the opening, effectively thwarting the intruders below. This simple yet ingenious design was a crucial element of the castle’s fortifications, reminding visitors of the strategic measures used to protect those within its walls.

Poison Garden

Just past the long line leading to the Blarney Stone, you’ll find the intriguing Poison Garden, nestled on the far side of the castle’s sturdy stone walls. This unique garden boasts a collection of toxic plants from around the world, including wolfsbane, mandrake, and ricin. These plants are not only infamous for their deadly properties but are also steeped in history, having been used in ancient medicine and even associated with witchcraft.

The garden was thoughtfully created to educate visitors about the dangers hidden in poisonous plants, which can be found both in the wild and closer to home in our own gardens. It highlights the complex nature of these plants, showcasing how they have been utilized throughout history while also underscoring the risks they pose.

Defensive Walls

In the garden, you can stroll along the remnants of the old defensive walls, known as “The Bawn,” located on the western edge of the grounds. These historic walls once served as a vital refuge, offering protection to both people and livestock during times of danger. Far more than just a stronghold, this area was a hive of activity, bustling with the daily life of the castle’s community. Here, blacksmiths forged tools, tanners prepared hides, masons and carpenters constructed and repaired, while butchers, cooks, and a variety of animals filled the space with energy and purpose. It was a place where survival and industry came together in the shadow of the castle’s protective walls.

Carnivorous Courtyard

Carnivorous plants are extraordinary species that derive some or all of their nutrients by trapping and consuming animals. While they primarily prey on insects and other arthropods, some species are capable of capturing larger creatures, including frogs, lizards, and even small mammals like rats. These remarkable plants have adapted to thrive in harsh environments where soils are thin or lacking in nutrients, particularly nitrogen, such as acidic bogs.

Using vibrant, fluid-filled leaves, alluring scents, sticky surfaces, or tentacle-like structures, they lure their unsuspecting victims into carefully evolved traps. Once caught, the prey is slowly digested, providing the plant with the nutrients it needs to survive. Amazingly, several of these captivating plants can even be found here in Ireland, adding to the rich biodiversity of the region.

Stable Yard Cafe & Gift Shop

If you feel like taking a little break and grabbing a snack, head to the Stable Yard Café and Gift Shop. Located in what was once the original stables, this little cafe offers a cozy place to sit and enjoy fresh cakes and cream teas. Don’t miss the loganberry ice cream, made from estate-grown fruit.

The Rock Close

Now that you’ve seen the castle, it’s time to explore the gardens! The gardens and mystical history hidden throughout is actually my favourite part of a visit to Blarney Castle so please please don’t miss out on these areas! The Rock Close, one of the most enchanting areas inside of Blarney Castle, offers a glimpse into its mystical past. This serene garden is believed to have been a druidic settlement, where rituals and ceremonies took place long before the castle was built. Shrouded beneath a canopy of ancient yew trees, the area feels like stepping into a world of magic and legend.

Many of the rocks have remained untouched for over 2,000 years, while others were artfully arranged in the 1750s by the Jefferyes family to enhance the natural beauty of the site. The twisted roots of the yew trees cling to the rocky ground like veins, adding to the mystical atmosphere.

Witches Kitchen & Druids Cave

The ancient Witch’s Yew Tree, located in the enchanting Rock Close, is estimated to be over 600 years old. This towering and magnificent tree perches atop a limestone outcrop that houses the Witch’s Kitchen, an 18th-century folly steeped in folklore. According to legend, this was the home of the Blarney Witch, who first revealed the magical powers of the Blarney Stone and its ability to grant the gift of eloquence.

The name “Witch’s Kitchen” evokes images of a mystical hideaway where potions and spells were once brewed. Folklore tells of the witch crafting her concoctions here, and if you visit early enough in the morning, some say you might see the faint glow of embers from a lingering fire—a haunting reminder of the witch who is said to still roam the woods.

The structure itself is made of moss-covered stones, with a natural chimney that vents the cave and lends credence to its role as a functional kitchen. The eerie charm of this place is undeniable, blending nature’s beauty with the mysteries of its past.

While folklore speaks of witches, others believe the cave may have once been home to a reclusive hermit cared for by the Jefferyes family. Over the centuries, it may have sheltered many, and some historians even suggest it was used by Ireland’s earliest inhabitants, the Druids.

Witches Stone

The Witch’s Stone is one of the most captivating items within the mystical Rock Close at Blarney Castle. Surrounded by lush greenery and steeped in centuries of Irish folklore, this enigmatic boulder is said to be the petrified form of the legendary Blarney Witch. According to local legend, the witch, credited with bestowing the gift of eloquence, is trapped in stone during the day and freed to roam the grounds after nightfall, only to return to her rocky prison at dawn.

The Witch’s Stone commands your attention, its striking appearance resembling the side profile of a woman, her eyes watching you as you pass by. Many people leave offerings for the witch atop the rock, so if you have any change, it can’t hurt to leave some for a little added luck!

Druids Circle

Just a few steps away, you’ll come across what is believed to be a Druid’s Circle, a ring of large standing stones arranged in a perfect circle. It resembles other ancient megalithic sites found throughout Ireland and is thought to have been used by the Druids, the wise and mystical figures of Celtic society, for rituals or gatherings. While its exact purpose remains a mystery, stone circles like this are often associated with ceremonies tied to the sun, the moon, and the rhythms of nature, adding a touch of magic to the experience.

Dolmen

On the far side of the Druid’s Circle, you’ll find a large dolmen. This ancient structure is made up of two or more upright stones supporting a flat horizontal capstone. Dolmens are thought to have served as burial chambers or gateways to the otherworld during the Neolithic period, more than 4,000 years ago. They are often referred to as the Druid’s Altar, adding to their sense of mystery and spiritual significance.

Wishing Steps & Waterfall

The Wishing Steps are one of the most enchanting features hidden within the magical Rock Close. According to local legend, if you walk both up and down the steps with your eyes closed, focusing entirely on your wish and without stopping, your wish will come true within a year. The stone steps, smooth and weathered from centuries of footsteps, carry an air of mystery and tradition.

The steps descend into a damp, moss-covered gorge, where a charming waterfall gently cascades over the rocks. The soft sound of falling water fills the air, creating a serene atmosphere that enhances the enchanting beauty of the surroundings. It’s a place that feels alive with history and folklore, inviting visitors to pause and immerse themselves in its quiet magic.

Boardwalk and Water Garden

This area is home to a raised boardwalk, surrounded by Gunnera manicata and water-loving plants that make you feel more like you’re walking through the rainforest than an Irish castle. One of the most beloved spots for visitors here is the Fern Garden. Here, towering Dicksonia tree ferns, brought from the far corners of the world, create a prehistoric atmosphere, as they are remnants of the Jurassic period. Sunlight filters gently through the lofty canopy of trees above, scattering through the delicate fronds of the ferns below. The atmosphere in this area is nothing short of magical.

Seven Sisters

The final stop on our tour of Blarney Castle takes us through the gardens towards the legendary “Seven Sisters.” The gardens are a breathtaking mix of colours and textures, offering visitors a diverse array of flowers and foliage throughout the year. Vibrant yellow daffodils brighten the pathways in spring, creating a cheerful welcome. Azaleas and rhododendrons bloom in stunning shades of pink, red, and purple, particularly in the Belgian Beds, where their colours produce a dazzling display.

The Seven Sisters are a series of tones arranged in a circle and carry a sense of mystery and historical significance, though their true origin and purpose remain unknown. Like many megalithic structures across Ireland, they are believed to have been used for ancient rituals, astronomical observations, or as markers of important events or sacred places.

The circular arrangement of the Seven Sisters suggests they may have been tied to gatherings or ceremonies, perhaps with druidic connections, given the area’s ties to Celtic mythology. It’s easy to imagine the site used for ceremonial dances, religious rites, or communal gatherings by ancient peoples.

Initially, nine standing stones were here. According to legend, a medieval chieftain with seven daughters and two sons took his sons to battle against a raiding neighbour. While victorious, the chieftain suffered a heartbreaking loss—both of his sons were killed in the fight. Grief-stricken, he returned to this spot with his troops and his sons’ bodies. To honour their sacrifice, he ordered his men to knock down two stones, leaving the remaining seven standing as a poignant reminder of his loss.

This is a local hot spot, and when we were lined up to get our morning brew, everyone in front of us was chatting with the staff about what they were getting up to over the summer and how their families were doing. That kind of lovely small-town chats made visiting small towns a treat.

Malahide Castle

If you want to explore more of Malahide, you can consider taking a peek inside Malahide Castle. Malahide Castle dates back to the 12th century and is set within over 260 acres of beautiful parkland. The castle’s gardens and grounds are perfect for strolling, and the castle itself offers a fascinating glimpse into Irish history.

Model Railway Museum

If you have kids or are interested in trains, I would personally recommend the Model Railway Museum. This museum is a personal collection of Cyril Fry, who himself hand-built model these model trains, now considered one of the finest collections in Europe. The museum’s immersive exhibits feature everything from miniature trains in motion to carefully constructed replicas of Irish landscapes and local train stations.

Exploring the Village of Malahide

If you prefer to just wander, especially after a long flight, the village is small enough to relax and save you from feeling overwhelmed with options. You can wander and pop into the little antique shops, restaurants, cafes, and pubs, all of which have calm and welcoming environments for locals and visitors alike. What’s lovely about making this your first stop instead of a big city like Dublin is the village’s small-town vibes, which inject you with that downhome Irish hospitality from the get-go.

Beshoff Bros Malahide

When you feel hungry, one of the best spots in town to grab a bite is Beshoff Bros Malahide. This high-quality fish and chips spot is right by the sea, and their amazingly fresh fish and seafood are beloved by locals. Their famous crispy battered cod to haddock, scampi, and even calamari are served with thick-cut, golden chips with what would go on to be the best tartar sauce we had throughout the entire trip! And if you’re gluten-free, they even have a dedicated batter and fryer for gluten-free options. Grab your pipping hot fish and chips and walk to the park outside the marina, where you can sit on the green and take in the sailboats bobbing up and down along the docks.

From Malahide, you can spend the night in Dublin or continue into the countryside, out to Wicklow County, or as they better call it, “the gardens of Ireland.” Malahide makes for an unforgettable getaway; whether wandering through the elegant halls of Malahide Castle, enjoying fresh seafood by the marina, or strolling along the beach, this charming seaside town has something for everyone.

How to Get to the Rock of Cashel

By Car

Driving is the most convenient option, especially if you’re exploring Ireland’s countryside. The Rock of Cashel is located in County Tipperary, just off the M8 motorway, about 1.5 hours from Cork, 2 hours from Dublin, and 1 hour from Limerick. Ample parking is available nearby.

By Bus

Public buses connect Cashel with major cities like Cork, Dublin, and Limerick. While the schedules may vary, this option is affordable for travellers who prefer not to drive. Be sure to check the latest timetables in advance. The bus will arrive in the town centre and from there it is a short walk to the historic site.

You also have the option to visit Cashel by guided tour buses, but despite these options being fairly hassle-free, the time you get here in Cashel is limited, and I think exploring the city and the surroundings on your own time is worth the extra effort.

Parking at the Rock of Cashel

Parking is available just outside the entrance ramp leading to the historic site when entering the town of Cashel. Parking costs €4.50 for the day after a 20-minute grace period. So, if you just want to park, hop out to get a picture, and leave, you also have this option without paying for the full day. But a visit to the historic site is really recommended! After visiting the Rock, the town’s cozy cafes and local shops are the perfect place to grab a bite to eat and do a little shopping. Make the most of your €4.50 parking investment.

Rock of Cashel

The Rock of Cashel dates back over a thousand years and was once the seat of the kings of Munster, a powerful dynasty that ruled the region for centuries. The Rock was seen as a symbol of power and authority, where Munster rulers governed and defended their lands. Despite its name, the Rock of Cashel isn’t a rock at all but a limestone outcrop. But this striking and unique appearance gives the impression that the formation rises straight from the ground! Making it look all the more breathtaking.

Devil’s Bit Legend

However, many believe the Rock wasn’t here naturally and named it the Devil’s Bit. According to legend, the Rock of Cashel first appeared when St. Patrick banished the Devil from a nearby cave. In his fury, the Devil took a massive bite out of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, about 30 kilometres away. The chunk of Rock became lodged in the Devil’s throat, and in an attempt to spit it out, it was spit out, resulting in the seemingly out-of-place piece of Rock we now call the Rock of Cashel.

If you look across the landscape, towards the Slieve Bloom Mountains, you can even see a part of the mountains where a significant portion of the Rock seems missing. Could this be where the Devil took his bite? It’s up to you to decide!

St. Patrick and Cashel’s History

Another famous legend in Cashel is its link to St. Patrick. According to legend, one of the most significant events in Irish religious history occurred here when St. Patrick came to Cashel in the fifth century and converted King Aengus of Munster to Christianity. However, St. Patrick unintentionally punctured the king’s foot with his staff during baptism. However, the monarch bore the agony, thinking it was necessary for the ceremony.

Later, in 978, Brian Boru was crowned High King in Cashel, making Cashel his capital. Brian Boru remained the High King of Ireland from 1002 to 1014, unifying much of the island and leading the resistance against heavy Viking invaders. The Eóganacht Dynasty, who ruled Southern Ireland from the seventh to the tenth century, had their royal residence here on the Rock of Cashel. Eventually, the Rock became an ecclesiastical site in 1101 when King Muirchertach Ua Briain gifted the Rock to the Catholic church.

St. Patrick’s Cross

Walking into the main courtyard, make a point to study the replica of the original St. Patrick’s Cross that stands proudly in the center. The original, now protected indoors, is said to have marked where St. Patrick converted the King of Munster to Christianity. One side of the cross is said to feature a carving of a bishop (possibly St. Patrick), while the other depicts a Celtic deity, reflecting the blending of pagan and Christian traditions during Ireland’s early Christian era.

The Cathedral

Constructed in the 13th century, the Cathedral was once one of the most impressive Gothic structures with soaring arches and intricate Irish stonework. However, in 1647, during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland, the Rock of Cashel was attacked and severely damaged by Parliamentarian forces. Hundreds of Irish soldiers and priests were massacred, and the structures were left in ruins. The scars of this violent history are still visible throughout the structure.

Today, all that remains is an open-air design that lets light and shadow play across its ruins. But there are still clues throughout the ruins that give you a glimpse of what this place would have looked like in its past splendour if you just used a little bit of your imagination.

The clergy were housed in the chancel, which was at the eastern end of the Cathedral. It houses the bishop’s throne and the altar, two of the building’s best-preserved elements. Any history fan will be right at home here studying the elaborate carvings and exquisite stones that offer so much insight into the creativity and workmanship of the period.

Several grave markers and tombstones remain inside the Cathedral, some of which include elaborate inscriptions, heraldic shields, and figure sculptures.

Stepping outside the Cathedral to the site’s north side, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. This is the main graveyard, and as you walk around the grounds, you’ll come across old Celtic crosses and worn gravestones that have all witnessed the passing of time. The sombre mood is constrasted by the enchanting windswept hilltops across the incredible landscape.

The Round Tower

Around the corner of the Cathedral, you’ll see the looming shadow of the great Round tower. The Round Tower is a whopping 28-meters high and built around 1100 AD. It stands as one of the oldest structures on the site. However, the most impressive part of the Round Tower is that it was constructed without mortar! The stones were carefully fitted together, showcasing the feats of engineering skill of early Irish builders. Like many round towers in Ireland, the tower’s doorway is raised several meters off the ground, likely for defensive purposes.

Hore Abbey

One of the most interesting things to spot on the horizon is the ruins of an old Abbey that lies in a peaceful field, surrounded by the lush greenery of the Tipperary countryside to the west of the Rock of Cashel. This is Hore Abbey, a once prestigious 13th-century Cistercian monastery. The name ‘Hore’ is believed to originate from the word ‘iubhair,‘ meaning yew tree. Despite its crumbling remains, you can still see the iconic features of the Gothic-style church, which features a square cloister, a central tower, and living quarters. The abbey’s lands were granted to the Cistercians after a dream prompted Archbishop David MacCarvill to expel the Benedictine monks originally residing there, a legend that adds a layer of intrigue to its rich history.

Cormac’s Chapel

Returning to the southeast side, step inside the 12th-century Romanesque Cormac’s Chapel, the crown jewel of the Rock. Named after Cormac MacCarthy, King of Munster, he commissioned its construction in 1127 as a ruler deeply committed to his faith and his kingdom’s cultural advancement.

One of the most impressive features of the beautifully preserved frescoes depicting biblical scenes. These are among Ireland’s oldest and best-preserved Romanesque wall paintings. These delicate frescoes date back to the 12th century and are incredibly rare due to Ireland’s damp climate and ravaging wars, which destroyed most medieval wall art throughout the country. One can imagine how hauntingly beautiful the voices singing inside this chapel would have sounded, echoing throughout the cold stone walls.

Inside the chapel, be sure to admire the ancient Viking sarcophagus containing the remains of King Cormac‘s brother Tadhg. The tomb is engraved with two symbols of ancient beasts, said to bless the entombed with eternal life.

Hall of the Vicars Choral

Our journey finishes at the Hall of the Vicars Choral, a meticulously restored structure that offers a glimpse into the past. The original hall was used in the fourteenth century by the Vicars Choral, a group of individuals who lead religious services without the cathedral’s canons.

The building’s design, which combines tasteful timber features with restored medieval stonework, underlines its historical value. Inside, you may examine a recreated dining room including a large wood table and relics like serving bowls and bronze candlesticks that provide light on the vicars’ everyday routines.

Bishops Walk Cashel

After touring the ancient site, I recommend taking a very short walk along the Bishops Walk Cashel pathway below the hill (marked on the map). This pathway is a beautiful way to see the surrounding countryside and gives you a fantastic view of the Rock of Cashel above from a unique vantage point, without any crowds!

Cashel Woolen Store

If you still haven’t found the perfect woollen souvenir from Ireland, I recommend visiting the Cashel Woolen Store. I know you’d think that being so close to such a big tourist site, this shop would be overpriced and sell cheap knockoffs, but this is the furthest thing from the truth! The amazing women who run this shop are so friendly and have one of the best-priced selections of authentic and local wool products from Cashel and the surrounding counties.

Ladyswell Restaurant

If you’re looking to grab lunch in town, my biggest recommendation is to visit Ladyswell Restaurant. This is a cherished dining spot where you’ll find a warm and inviting atmosphere with delectable Irish cuisine that makes you feel like you’re eating in your relatives’ kitchen! Be sure you save room for dessert, as this spot had the best sweets we had anywhere on the trip!!!

Feehan’s Bar

If you’re looking for more of an old-school pub vibe, head over to Feehan’s Bar. This is the spot to get some traditional, hearty Irish cooking with a side of dark wood accents and a cozy ambiance.

As you wrap up your visit to Cashel, take a last moment to soak in the breathtaking views of the Tipperary countryside and reflect on the layers of history you’ve uncovered. Whether you marvelled at the intricate stonework, imagined life in the Hall of the Vicars Choral, or simply revelled in the serene atmosphere, the Rock of Cashel is a place that stays with you long after you leave. It’s not just a visit—it’s an unforgettable journey through time.

Pack a Picnic Lunch!

Before setting off, it’s a good idea to visit the nearest grocery store or corner shop to pick up some items for a picnic. This way, you’ll be all set for a fresh picnic lunch. Having a picnic on hand means you won’t have to worry about finding a place to eat. Instead, you can choose any spot that catches your eye and enjoy your meal in front of the stunning, picturesque sights that Wicklow County is renowned for.

Some of my favourite Irish grocery store staples that are perfect for a picnic are custard yogurt, sliced soda bread, Irish smoked salmon, rhubarb soda, Tayto crisps (cheese and onion is my fave), some fresh Irish produce (like strawberries!), sausage rolls, Irish cheddar cheese and some Mikado and/ok Kimberley biscuits. I also can never resist a meal deal sandwich from Tesco!

Powerscourt Waterfall

The day’s first stop is at Powerscourt Waterfall, Ireland’s highest waterfall. Arriving here first thing in the morning is a great way to start the day since this spot gets very busy, and early morning means you have the place to yourself (or at least as close to that as possible).

Nestled within the Powerscourt Estate, the falls are encircled by verdant forests with beech, oak, and pine trees. The serene woodland environment and the sound of the falling water make this the ideal location for a breakfast picnic or just sitting and admiring the view. The falls are a short walk from the parking lot, so you don’t have to worry about it being a long hike to see this spectacular sight. It’s a perfect spot to unwind and start your day peacefully.

Ballinastoe Boardwalk

The Ballinastoe Boardwalk is one of the most relaxing and immersive walks through the lush forests, open moorlands, and elevated boardwalks that protect the fragile boglands of this magical slice of Ireland. The hike begins at the parking lot near Lough Tay with a gentle incline through a woodland path surrounded by tall trees. The forest canopy offers dappled sunlight, and the air is fresh with the scent of pine. As you ascend, the trail reveals sweeping views of the Wicklow Mountains and Lough Tay. The walk only takes about 30 minutes, so it’s a great little jaunt that does not take up too much time in the day.

Aroma Coffee Van

If you’re lucky enough to come on a Saturday, stop just near the entrance to the Ballinastoe Boardwalk, where you’ll find the Aroma Coffee Van! This quaint, mobile establishment serves as a delightful stopover for tourists and locals exploring the picturesque surroundings with various high-quality beverages, including rich, aromatic coffees, indulgent hot chocolates, fresh pastries and homemade cakes, all prepared daily.

Glendalough Monastic Site

Hopping back in the car, you set out for a scenic 20-minute drive to the historic Glendalough Monastic Site. Glendalough is one of Ireland’s most famous early Christian sites in a glacial valley. The site dates back to the 6th century when it was founded by St. Kevin, a hermit monk who sought solitude amidst the serene beauty of the Wicklow mountains. Over the centuries, it flourished into a vibrant monastic settlement, becoming a hub of learning and spirituality. The rich history of this place is sure to pique your interest.

Glendalough Parking

The best place to park is at the Glendalough Lower Car Park; I find this lot a little bigger and less busy than the Upper parking lots. Parking for cars costs €4. After parking the car, you have free reign over the ancient sites and serene lakes. There is a charge to enter the visitor’s center, but I would just skip this and follow this guide to get the gist of the historical information.

The Round Tower

One of the most important sites is the Round Tower. Rising 30 meters high, the old stone tower was built between the 10th and 12th centuries to serve as a bell tower to call monks to prayer, a lookout, and a place of refuge during attacks. The reason it was so secure was that the entrance to the tower was set over three meters above ground. The tower is encircled with four small windows facing the cardinal directions, further reflecting the practical and symbolic design, representing the monks’ devotion and connection to the divine. Its stone craftsmanship is a marvel of early Irish engineering.

Glendalough Cathedral

The Glendalough Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, is now little more than a stone ruin dating back to the 10th century. The old mica schist stones, which remain, showcase a mix of Irish architectural styles that have evolved over centuries, with the most impressive remaining structure being the beautiful chancel arch, a hallmark of Romanesque designs from medieval stonemasons.

Graveyard

The cathedral is set amidst the ancient graveyard, a hauntingly beautiful space filled with ancient headstones and Celtic crosses. A distinctive feature of the Celtic cross is the circle intersecting the arms of the cross, often interpreted as a representation of eternity. These weathered markers, some dating back centuries, hold the remains of monks who would have lived here along with local inhabitants. Many grave markers are simple and unadorned, reflecting the monastic values of humility and simplicity.

St. Kevin’s Church

St. Kevin’s Church, often affectionately called “St. Kevin’s Kitchen,” is one of the most charming and well-preserved structures at the Glendalough Monastic Site. Despite the nickname, it was never a kitchen; the name likely arose from the small bell tower that resembles a chimney. This stone church exemplifies early Irish ecclesiastical architecture and offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the monks who once worshiped there.

Wicklow Mountains National Park Lakes

After touring the heritage historical sites, take a short walk and wander through the Wicklow Mountains National Park. The forest and surrounding lakes are home to various wildlife, including birds, foxes and red deer, which we were lucky to see on our visit! The breathtaking beauty of this park is sure to inspire you.

The nearby forest trail, rich with lush greenery, takes you towards the tranquil Lower and Upper Lakes. These two lakes, formed during the last Ice Age, are surrounded by dramatic mountain slopes, creating a timeless Irish landscape.

Upper Lake

If you’re looking for a more secluded view, keep walking towards the Upper Lake, the largest of the two and home to some of the most beautiful reflective waters, which framed the steep cliffs and dense woodlands above. This lake is a great spot to enjoy a picnic lunch, or if you head towards the back of the Upper Lake parking lot, you can find a series of food trucks where you can buy cheese toasties, ice cream and more. The prices aren’t too bad but obviously high considering the remote location. The food options include a variety of sandwiches, hot and cold drinks, and local specialties like Irish stew and soda bread.

Kevin’s Bed

10 meters above the Upper Lake, you can spot St. Kevin’s Bed, a small, ancient cave. It is a legend that St. Kevin escaped here to avoid distractions and focus instead on his spiritual connection with God. He spent years living there in deep, isolated contemplation, and the cave today remains a symbol of St. Kevin’s unwavering faith and dedication.

Glendalough Woollen Mills

Just a stone’s throw from the historic Glendalough monastic site, Glendalough Woollen Mills is a family-owned treasure celebrating over six decades of Irish craftsmanship. Renowned for its exquisite selection of handcrafted knitwear, the mill offers traditional Aran sweaters, contemporary designs, tweed garments, and accessories for all ages, many of which are created by local artisans. Set beside a tranquil stream and a picturesque 18th-century stone bridge, the mill creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere where visitors can explore authentic Irish-made products. This was one of the best-priced woollen mills with authentic products that felt like you were shopping from the local farmer. We will also be shopping at the famed Avoca wollen mill later in the itinerary, but Avoca, being a royal wollen mill, is much more pricey, and the designers are more modern. Meanwhile, Glendalough Woollen Mills offers a genuine taste of Ireland’s rich textile and artistic heritage.

Brittas Bay

From here, we get back on the road for a scenic journey through the picturesque landscapes of County Wicklow towards the iconic Irish coastline. As you descend from the mountains, the terrain softens, giving way to charming rural countryside dotted with quaint farms, stone walls, and grazing sheep. Brittas Bay greets you with its sweeping golden sands and gently rolling dunes, a sharp contrast to the rugged mountains of Glendalough, all within less than an hour’s drive of each other.

Brittas Bay is known for its pristine beauty, with a bay that stretches for 3 miles, framed by grassy dunes and sparkling blue waters. Parking at Brittas Bay is free outside during busy summer months when parking costs €4 (cash or card). Even when we visited in the spring, there were open toilets, a small selection of chip trucks, and ice cream vans, perfect for a little snack to enjoy as you watch the waves crash on the shore. Or, if it’s warm enough, take a little dip!

Avoca Handweavers Woolen Mill

The last stop of the drive is to visit Avoca Handweavers in the quaint village of Avoca. Established in 1723, Avoca Handweavers is celebrated as Ireland’s oldest working weaving mill, where traditional craftsmanship meets contemporary design. Upon arrival, you’re greeted by the charming whitewashed buildings of the mill, snuggled up along the tranquil Avoca River.

If you arrive before the end of the day, you can even take a guided tour of the mill, which provides deeper insight into the journey through the weaving process. Skilled artisans demonstrate the art of handweaving on looms, some of which have been in operation for generations. Over the years, Avoca’s beautifully crafted woven products have been gifted to members of the royal family, including a waistcoat for King George VI and blankets for Queen Elizabeth II’s children, and there are letters written from the sovereign to thank Avoca in their onsite museum.

Following the tour, the Avoca Store awaits, showcasing a stunning array of the mill’s products. Each item reflects the meticulous artistry synonymous with Avoca, from colourful woven throws in mohair, Donegal wool, and cashmere to beautifully crafted scarves, clothing, and baby blankets.

Afternoon Cream Tea

To complement the shopping experience, the onsite café offers a cozy retreat. You can get some of their delicious homemade quiches, freshly prepared sandwiches, hearty soups, or delectable sweet treats. But my favourite thing is ordering an afternoon cream tea with a fresh pot of tea, warm scone and jam cream. If the weather is good enough, you can take your tray down to the river, where a few picnic tables are set up to enjoy your tea in the peace and quiet of the river’s edge.

As your Wicklow road trip approaches, you’ll carry with you the timeless beauty of Glendalough’s ancient ruins, the tranquillity of the Wicklow Mountains, and the immeasurable hidden gems you discovered along the way. Whether it’s the thrill of winding roads, peaceful nature hikes, or the charming villages you pass through, you may feel a little of Ireland’s beauty at every stop.

Self-Guided Tour of Kinsale Map

Tips on Parking in Kinsale

Most travellers docking in Kinsale will arrive in their rental car, and while the city is a popular tourist destination, there are limited parking spots throughout this little town. Arriving early in the morning is a great way to avoid driving around looking for spots and allows you the most time to explore the city. The Main Town Car Park is located on Pier Road. This centrally located, pay-and-display car park is convenient for exploring the town center. Another option is the St. Multose Car Park, which often has free parking, though limited spaces exist. Another larger lot is located on Pearse Street opposite the Kinsale Tourist Information Centre. Additionally, there are two-hour limited spots along Pearse Street in front of the shops, which can be an alternative option if you aren’t planning to stay longer than those two hours.

Grab a Coffee at Wild and Tame

The best way to start your day is with a coffee (or tea) at Wild and Tame. I’ve said before that while travelling in Ireland, I often opted for tea over coffee, but I was seriously impressed with the brews at Wild and Tame. This charming little spot greets you with smiles the minute you walk in the door, and behind the counter, the delightful baristas carefully craft delicious brews. Here, you’ll find a selection of specialty coffees with locally roasted beans, offering a rich, flavorful experience. The cafe’s interior is bright and colourful, emblematic of Kinsale’s spirit.

Model of Old Kinsale Town Wall

Coffee or tea in hand, take a short walk outside along Market Street towards the minature model of the ancient town wall of Kinsale. Looking at this model, you can see the original walls that once surrounded Kinsale. King Richard II of England declared a wall be built around the town in 1381, ensuring its inhabitants would be safe from any incoming attackers. The Norman town had grown in prominence due to its strategic location on the River Bandon, large seaport, and fishing hubs.

Kinsale History

In 1601, the Battle of Kinsale took place, a pivotal moment in Irish history. It occurred during the Nine Years’ War when Irish chieftains Hugh O’Neill and Red Hugh O’Donnell sought to end English rule in Ireland. They allied with Spanish forces, who landed in Kinsale to support their cause. The English, led by Lord Mountjoy, besieged the town, cutting off supplies. Despite a desperate attempt by the Irish to break the siege, they were defeated. This battle marked the decline of Gaelic Ireland and solidified English dominance over the island. The ongoing military tensions throughout the later 17th century resulted in the construction of Charles Fort and James Fort, built in Kinsale for defensive purposes. Their military history is still preserved today.

Kinsale Museum

Continue along Market Street to Market Square and pause outside the Kinsale Museum, located inside a building dating back to the 1590s. The original building served as the town’s markethouse and is a prime example of 17th-century Irish architecture. The exterior retains traditional stone walls, a pitched slate roof with gabled boys, and red brick arcade arches.

Nosh on Breakfast at the Cosy Café

Continuing along Market Place, you’ll reach the charming red awning outside the Cosy Café. In addition to the sweet decor and magnetic service, the food at Cosy Café is locally sourced, allowing you to indulge in all the flavours across Kinsale. The eggs are from Beechwood Farm, the veggies are from Horizon Farm, and the shellfish and smoked salmon are harvested from the Haven Shellfish fishery.

Visit St. Multose Church

After breakfast, walk across the street to St. Multose Church, one of Kinsale’s oldest buildings. The medieval church was founded in 1190, but the location of the church is built atop the 6th century ecclesiastical settlement of St. Multose.

Inside the church, you can admire the blend of Norman and Gothic styles, including thick stone walls, carved timber ornamentation, and narrow arched windows that are iconic of Irish medieval architecture. The Norman style, characterized by its simplicity and strength, is evident in the thick walls and the overall structure of the church. The Gothic style, known for its pointed arches and elaborate ornamentation, can be seen in the carved timber decorations and the stained glass windows. The stained glass windows inside the church are beautiful nautical-themed artworks by Irish artist Catherine O’Brien.

Cemetery

Before heading inside the church, walk around the cemetery, as the graves and mausoleums date back to the 16th century. Among these buildings are several victims of the sinking of the RMS Lusitania. The RMS Lusitania, a British ocean liner, was sunk by a German U-boat on May 7, 1915, off the coast of Ireland near Kinsale. The ship was en route from New York to Liverpool when it was torpedoed, resulting in the loss of 1,198 lives. Many of the victims’ bodies were brought to the town, and a memorial sea garden was built inside the cemetery to commemorate the lives lost.

Explore Desmond Castle

After spending some peaceful, reflective moments inside the church, head to Desmond Castle, a 5-minute walk from St. Multose Church along Cork Street. While walking up Cork Street, before reaching the castle, take a peek at the green-painted mailbox embedded in the stone wall. These mailboxes still bear the British royal insignia “ER” (Elizabeth Regina), dating back to the time before Irish independence. After gaining independence in 1922, the Irish government decided to keep the existing boxes but repainted them green to signify Irish sovereignty.

Desmond Castle was initially built as a customs house in the 1500s, but in the 17th century, it became a naval prison for French and Spanish prisoners. Sadly, in 1747, a fire broke out and killed 54 of the prisoners trapped inside, resulting in its status as one of the most haunted spots in Kinsale.

Rainbow Shops on Newman’s Mall

Walk along Chairman’s Lane, turning onto the narrow laneway called Newman’s Mall. This pedestrian street is home to the most colourful shops in the city and is one of the best places to get those iconic shots of Kinsale’s vibrant neighbours.

Dive into Irish Literature at Bookstór

One of my favourite stores on Newman’s Mall is Bookstór. If you’re an avid reader of the blog, you’ll know my affinity for bookstores, and this one was the perfect example of those charming, cozy bookstores you’ll find in small towns that have a better-curated selection in such a small space than the big box stores could ever even dream of having! If you’re visiting small towns like these, I highly recommend supporting the small businesses there, and this spot is ideal to grab some fantastic books on Ireland to learn a little more about the country’s rich history.

Grab a Morning Brew at Grey Hound Bar

If you want to stop and get a refreshing cold glass of Guinness before lunch, the Grey Hound Bar is one of the best bars in the city, if not the country. It is one of the oldest bars in Ireland, with its official license dating back to 1690, and the building it stands in is even older!

If it’s a cold day, step inside to snuggle up beside one of the cozy fires, or if the weather is sunny and warm, they almost always have tables outside on the cobblestones so you can enjoy the sights around you while enjoying a little moment of peace before continuing on your journey.

Shops Along Market Quay

After finishing with a quick drink, head out towards Market Quay. Market Quay is narrow and a short little lane, but it perfectly reflects the town’s vibrant atmosphere even in such a small space. It’s lined with colourful buildings housing a mix of shops, cafés, and restaurants right down towards the water, offering lovely views of the harbour.

Find Unique Designs in Hattitude

One of the most fantastic stores in Kinsale is Hattitude, a charming boutique specializing in those iconic handmade hats, fascinators and headpieces you might have seen on guests at Royal weddings or elegant polo matches. Even if you might never imagine yourself in one of these whimsical caps, exploring the creativity and artisanal craftsmanship on display here is what a visit here is all about!

Snacking at Seeds Bakery

Across the street is Seeds Bakery, an artistic bake shop that specializes in sustainable ingredients and traditional techniques. Their pastries are divine, so if you want to grab a little snack later in the day to nosh on during our afternoon hike, this is a great spot to nab those fresh baked goods. But in addition to baked treats, there are many other locally made items like fresh wildflower summer blossom honey, natural Irish wine, hot chocolate mixes, mead and more!

Main Street

Take the little alleyway shortcut halfway down Market Quay to hop over to Main Street. Main Street is another street in Kinsale where every shop front seems to be more colourful than the next. If you’re looking for any Irish souvenirs, this street has many charming shops where you can find unique and treasured pieces to remember your trip to Ireland.

Admire the Stoney Steps

Along Main Street is Kinsale’s iconic Stoney Steps. The steps were originally just a narrow set of stone stairs that connected various levels of the upper town to the lower Main Street, but recently, the steps have become home to some beautiful street art dedicated to pirate Anne Bonny. Anne Bonny was a legendary pirate from the early 18th century, believed to have been born in Kinsale, Ireland. Known for her fierce spirit, she joined pirate Calico Jack Rackham and sailed the Caribbean, often disguising herself as a man. Alongside another female pirate, Mary Read, they plundered ships until their capture in 1720. Her story has become a symbol of rebellion and adventure in maritime history​.

Grab a Bite at the Flying Poet

If you want a laid-back, budget lunch, you should head into Flying Poet, my favourite cafe in Kinsale. This cozy coffee shop is just off the harbour and is an aviation-inspired café with an appropriately themed library offering top-flight coffees and toasties. The interior is the perfect spot to cozy up in one of their comfy sofas or velvet armchairs. Especially on a rainy day, their selection of hot toasted sandwiches is ideal for warming yourself up from the inside out!

Or Indulge in some Seafood at Fishy Fishy

If you’re looking for a more upscale lunch to indulge in some amazing local seafood, there is no better place than Fishy Fishy. Located near the harbour, Fishy Fishy offers a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere with menu items that feel like they jumped from the harbour right onto your plate. Some of the best menu items include their seafood soup, a creamy and rich dish filled with the day’s catch, and the pan-seared scallops, often praised for their tenderness and flavour. But if you really wanna splash out, the lobster and crab claws are also standout dishes!

Visit The Courthouse and Southwell Gift Almshouse

We will start with a short, 5-minute walk to the Courthouse and Southwell Gift Almshouse to walk off that lunch. Peeking through the bright red gates, you can see inside the lush ground of this charming collection of old white houses. These homes were built in 1682 by Sir Robert Southwell, who served as the Secretary of Ireland. He had these eight homes constructed for elderly men and women in need. His initiative was motivated by his deep concern for the welfare of the poor. A family was also housed there to provide care for the residents. These almshouses, known for their historical and architectural significance, underwent restoration in 1970, preserving their legacy and continuing to serve as a reminder of Southwell’s charitable efforts.

Scenic Scilly Walk

From the Almshouses, head back down to the harbour to take a coastal walk back through the main harbour of Kinsale, across to Charles Fort along the scenic Scilly Walk. The Scilly Walk is a picturesque coastal trail that takes you along a charming and peaceful path that winds along the water’s edge, offering stunning views of Kinsale Bay and Kinsale’s iconic colourful homes. As you meander along the route, you can admire the incredible lush plants and flowers nestled beneath towers and trees hanging over the pathways, protecting you from any light rain that is a familiar face in Ireland.

Walking, you’ll pass through the charming “millionaire’s row” on High Road. These houses sit perched on the side of the rugged cliffs, offering the best viewing points along the route. The walk takes around 30–40 minutes, leading you right to the entrance of Charles Fort. If you prefer, you can also drive rather than walk and park outside Fort Charles.

Military History at Fort Charles

As you make your way up from Scilly Walk, you emerge at the top of the hillside, where you’ll see Fort Charles standing on the edge of the cliffs. Fort Charles is a star-shaped fortress built between 1677 and 1682, which offers a fascinating glimpse into Ireland’s military history. When it was built, it was the country’s largest military installation used to defend this strategic port town from naval attacks. Its construction was part of a broader effort to strengthen coastal defences in Ireland, particularly in the wake of the English Civil War and increasing military threats from European powers, including the French and Spanish. Positioned at the entrance of Kinsale Harbor, the fort’s star-shaped design allowed for better defence against cannon fire, making it a crucial stronghold in protecting the town and its maritime trade routes.

As you wander through the fort’s vast grounds, you’ll explore well-preserved bastions, barracks, and a commanding view of the harbour. Entry into Fort Charles is €5.00 for adults. However, you can also park outside the fort in the parking lot and admire the exterior and surrounding landscapes for free. In fact, the hillside just outside the fort is one of my favourite places in Kinsale, where you can admire the incredible green terrain all around you.

Fine Dining at The Bulman Bar & Restaurant

The perfect way to finish your day in Kinsale is with a fancy seafood dinner at The Bulman in the picturesque Summercove area just a few blocks down from Fort Charles. The views here are spectacular, and the seafood is among the best in town! Combining traditional Irish charm with fresh, locally sourced seafood, this spot is perfect for a relaxed yet upscale dining experience.

The menu highlights include seafood specialties such as fresh mussels, lobster, and crab claws, paired with hearty Irish classics. I had one of the best dishes of the trip here: their fresh grilled scallops served with blood pudding sausage. A combination that was so hearty and warm and a fantastic take on traditional Irish ingredients.

Summercove to Scilly Stroll

After dinner, there is no better way to walk off that dinner than a sunset stroll along the harbour. Summercove sits just outside Bulman Bar and has one of the most fantastic views of Kinsale, with the lights of the town reflecting back on the water, which creates a magical atmosphere. If you took theScilly Walk, you’d take the same path back to Kinsale, where you left your car, taking in the twinkling lights of the stars up in the sky as you make your way back to town. The perfect way to end a day of Irish exploration.

Where Does the Stereotype of Bad Irish Food Come From?

Because of food shortages and poverty in the past, Irish food has been perceived as bland and lacking in diversity. For a significant chunk of its history, Ireland was an agricultural nation, and many people lived in poverty, especially in the wake of the Great Famine. The typical Irish diet was simple, consisting primarily of root vegetables, potatoes, and oats. These ingredients, while healthy, did not lend themselves to particularly interesting or varied cooking customs.

The Changing Foodie Landscape in Ireland

But much of this has changed over time, and not just in the big cities! Ireland is now celebrated for its high-quality, locally sourced ingredients, including some of the world’s best dairy, beef, and seafood. The emphasis on farm-to-table dining and fresh, seasonal produce has elevated much Irish cuisine. The quality of these local ingredients is not just a testament to the rich agricultural heritage of Ireland but one of the main reasons the restaurant scene has flourished in recent years. Many young chefs draw from traditional ingredients but get creative with inventive contemporary twists on the classics. Cities like Dublin, Cork, and Galway are home to Michelin-starred restaurants, and talented chefs are helping to redefine Irish food on the world stage. So if you’re planning on skipping Ireland because of the foods, I’d take another look!

Steak and Guinness Stew

Something that feels as Irish as the green hillsides covered in sheep is a hearty steak and Guinness stew. This is one of those traditional dishes that stands the test of time. Coming into a pub with a fire roaring, surrounded in dark wood and worn in leather chairs, there is nothing better to cozy up with than this savoury stew. Steak and Guinness stew consists of tender pieces of beef stewed in a rich sauce made from Guinness, Ireland’s famous stout, along with vegetables like carrots, onions, and mushrooms. Often, you’ll get a dollop of mashed potatoes on the side, which went slathered in butter and feels like the most iconically Irish mean there ever was. And delicious to boot!

Murphy’s Ice Cream

While in Dingle, on one of the many surprisingly sunny days we had on our trip, we treated ourselves to a few scoops of ice cream to cool down. And we were so impressed by the fantastic flavours at Murphy’s Ice Cream! Murphy’s Ice Cream was founded in Dingle in 2000 by brothers Seán and Kieran Murphy, and they have a reputation for producing some of the most intensely creamy ice cream using milk from the rare Kerry cow and their unique flavours focus on incorporating natural Irish products.

Some of Murphy’s signature flavours include unique combinations like Honeycomb Caramel, Dingle Sea Salt, Irish Brown Bread and even Gin (which is indeed alcoholic!). But even if you’re not passing through Dingle, you can still try Murphy’s Ice Cream in Dublin and Killarney, as the brand is continually expanding across the country! My favourite had to be the Brown Bread, as it was this malty, crunchy, comforting flavour that was unlike anything else I’ve ever tried!

A Full Irish Breakfast

One of the best parts of waking up every morning on our road trip through Ireland was a full Irish breakfast, included in our stay at all the Bed and Breakfasts we booked. Although I’m usually one to want to get out and grab breakfast at a local restaurant or cafe, the inclusion of breakfast in the accommodation price made it so these breakfasts were hard to pass up. In almost every place we stayed, breakfast was an absolute treat! And every breakfast room was more beautiful than the next, meaning we could soak in the Irish countryside, meet new friends and dive into the most filling ingredients from local Irish farmers.

Even if you’re not staying at a B&B, a full Irish Breakfast is still a must for anyone coming to Ireland. And you can easily find them serving a full breakfast at any cafeteria or breakfast restaurants across the country. The typical components of a traditional Irish breakfast include bacon (or rashers, which are thick slices of back bacon), Irish pork sausages (often referred to as “bangers,”), black and white pudding (traditional blood sausages and pork fat-based sausages), eggs (usually fried, but they can be scrambled or poached), tomatoes (grilled or fried), mushrooms, baked beans and a slice of soda bread, essential for mopping up the rest of the plate. The full Irish breakfast originated as a meal for farmworkers, providing them with the necessary energy for a long day’s work. While this meal might be a little much for some of us, you can customize your plate to your appetite or preferences at the breakfast buffets.

Irish Tea

The traditional accompaniment for a hearty Irish breakfast is a cup of Irish tea. Irish Breakfast Tea is a strong, robust black tea blend known for its full-bodied flavour, typically enjoyed with milk and sugar. The blend is known for its malty, rich taste. I found that coffee across Ireland wasn’t the greatest, so I shifted my morning caffeine intake from coffee to tea and was pleasantly surprised. Barry’s Tea is one of the most popular and iconic brands of Irish breakfast tea. Founded in 1901 in Cork, Barry’s Tea has become a household name in Ireland, so if you see Barry’s behind the counter, you know you’re in for a delicious cuppa.

Soda Bread

As mentioned before, soda bread is an essential item to add to any Irish breakfast. But really, it’s an any time of the day kinda treat. Soda bread is a traditional Irish bread made without yeast, using baking soda as the leavening agent, which is how it gets its name. The main ingredients typically include flour (usually white and wholemeal), buttermilk, baking soda, and salt. The acidic buttermilk reacts with the baking soda to produce carbon dioxide, which causes the dough to rise. The dough is then shaped into a round loaf and scored with a cross on top, a tradition that dates back to ancient times and is said to ward off evil spirits. Soda bread has a dense, crumbly texture and a slightly tangy flavour from the buttermilk, which I was absolutely obsessed with! Served with an ample slathering of Irish butter and fresh local jam, you really can’t get a better start to your day.

Irish Lamb

If you’re a vegetarian, you might want to cover your ears for this next one. Although sheep dotting the hillsides are one of the most adorable sights you’ll see along your journey across Ireland, the sheep are raised for more than just their wool. Especially early in the year, spring lamb makes its way onto menus across the country. The meat’s tender and delicate flavour graces dishes like a rack of lamb, grilled lamb chops, or roast lamb. Often, the meat is served with minimal seasoning, just a bit of rosemary or thyme, highlighting the mild, sweet taste without overpowering the flavour. Raised on Ireland’s lush, green pastures, Irish lamb benefits from a grass-fed diet, which adds to the meat’s lean and delicate taste.

Irish Butter

I’m a butter fiend and thought that French butter was the best in the world, but after travelling to Ireland, France has stiff competition. Irish butter is renowned for its rich, creamy flavour and distinctive yellow hue. The primary reason for its superior taste is that it comes from the milk of grass-fed cows. Ireland’s temperate climate allows cows to graze on lush, green pastures for most of the year, resulting in milk with higher fat content and a richer flavour. This higher fat content gives it a creamier, more luxurious texture and a distinct flavour profile that is richer and more, ironically, “buttery” than other types of butter. Although you might not always see butter on the table, it enriches almost every dish made in the kitchen! But if you can savour Irish butter on a slice of toast or a scone, don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy it in its full, unadulterated glory!

Irish Spice Bag

The Irish spice bag is a beloved, relatively modern takeaway dish that has become an iconic part of Irish fast food culture. Originating in Dublin, this fusion dish combines elements of Chinese cuisine with a distinctly Irish twist. A typical spice bag consists of crispy shredded chicken (or sometimes pork), chips (fries), fried onions, and peppers, all tossed in a spicy, salty seasoning mix. The seasoning usually includes a combination of chilli powder, five-spice, garlic salt, and paprika, giving it a bold and flavorful kick. While it’s most commonly seen at Chinese takeaways across Ireland, the spice bag has developed a cult following, especially for late-night eats or casual dining. The spice bag’s appeal lies in its crunchy texture, spicy flavour, and satisfying ingredients, making it a go-to option for those seeking a quick, tasty, and filling meal. Many places offer variations, with some adding extras like curry sauce or chilli flakes, further solidifying its status as a fast food favourite in Ireland. Even some of the more upscale restaurants have started serving an upscale version of this previously budget dish, which really shows how popular the food has gotten, making it a must-eat on your next trip!

A Pint (or two) of Guinness

You might be wondering why it took me so long to get to Guinness, as this stout beer seems like the defacto symbol of Ireland itself. And for good reason. The St. James’s Gate Brewery was established by Arthur Guinness in 1759, who signed a 9,000-year lease (!) for the Dublin property. This means that Guinness will keep its foothold in the country for many more years to come. Most of us have tried Guinness before, but there is something about drinking it from the tap in Ireland that makes it taste all the BETTER! The unique flavour profile of Guinness is characterized by roasted barley, which gives it a slightly bitter taste balanced by hints of coffee and chocolate. The stout’s smooth texture results from its nitrogen-infused carbonation, which creates its signature creamy head and velvety mouthfeel.

One of the most essential parts of ordering a Guinness is admiring the ritual of the perfect pour. The perfect Guinness pour is an art form, often taking over two minutes to ensure the nitrogen settles appropriately, creating the signature cascading effect. Something about the wait before drinking makes you appreciate this drink all the more. Even I, who in Canada isn’t a fan of Guinness, came to love having a pint (of half a pint) with dinner here in Ireland, and it just seemed to compliment every meal it was served with! Try me; even if you don’t like the taste at home, give it another try here in its homeland!

Irish Brown Crab

What surprised me most on our trip was how often we saw crab claws on the menu. I love crab, and I couldn’t believe the bounty of crab we found in Ireland. Irish Crab Claws are a delicacy prized for their sweet and tender meat. And in Ireland, we found that these crab claws were so well priced compared to the high prices I often find for crab in North America. Because they are harvested in abundance along Ireland’s Atlantic coastline, this means that when travelling along the villages close to the coast, you’ll be treated with some of the freshest crabs you’ve ever had! Whether served with a simple garlic butter dip or shredded into a delectable crab bisque, these brown crab claws were some of the best things we ate in Ireland.

Scallops

Thanks to Ireland’s cold, clean waters, the west coast of Ireland, particularly areas like Galway and Donegal, are famous for their high-quality scallops. Irish scallops have a naturally sweet, buttery, briny flavour, thanks to the pristine waters they come from. When pan-seared with a little butter and garlic, it allows the meat’s natural sweetness to shine through. In Kinsale, we were lucky enough to dine at the famous Bulman’s Bar and their scallops are served up alongside black pudding, and the pairing of these two iconic Irish dishes was perfect. A must try if you’re passing through this area.

Irish Lobster

Irish lobster is another one of those delicacies that makes travelling in Ireland so special! Caught off Ireland’s cold, clean Atlantic waters, particularly along the west coast, lobster here is prized for its sweet, delicate flavour. You can generally find lobster on the menu from April to September, which is considered the peak season. The warmer months provide ideal conditions for catching lobster; during this time, it is freshest, making it a popular item, especially in coastal towns and cities like Galway and Cork. Definitely look for seafood restaurants on your travels if you’re visiting during this time of year because this dish is unmissable!

Fish n’ Chips

Although you might think fish n’ chip is a distinctly British food, in reality, fish and chip was first invented in Portugal in the 15th century! From there, it made its way over to Britain and also Ireland! Irish fish and chips share similarities with the British version but a few distinct differences. Both are battered and deep-fried fish served with thick-cut chips (or what Americans call fries), but in Ireland, the batter for the fish is often lighter, with some places using a traditional beer batter made with local stout, like Guinness, to give the fish a subtle malty flavour.

Scones

Another bakery treat that we found all over the country was Irish scones. Again, although you might think of these as typically British, they are also synonymous with Ireland, especially when taken with a cup of Barry’s tea. Irish scones are generally smaller, less sweet, and more rustic than American or British ones. But this makes them perfect for pairing with that incredible Irish butter, locally made jam, or rich Irish clotted cream.

Custard

When we woke up on our first morning in Ireland, we hit the breakfast bar and were immediately drawn to the delicious-looking custard-style yogurt, and it immediately became a must-have with every morning meal! Irish custard-style yogurt has a thick, creamy texture, similar to custard, but with the tangy flavour of yogurt. Irish custard-style yogurt sets itself apart by using high-quality milk from grass-fed cows, which is known for its richness. Ireland’s temperate climate and lush green pastures contribute to the high quality of the milk used in dairy products, giving the yogurt its superior taste. Although they have relatively normal flavours like vanilla, strawberry or honey, my favourites were the rhubarb, which is grown in excess in Ireland.

Irish Breakfast Roll

Found in most large petrol stations, the Irish Breakfast Roll is the perfect thing to get your morning started! Walk up to the hot counter inside the station, where you can find an array of breakfast foods steaming away, ready to be rolled into a fresh sandwich roll. You can choose what ingredients you want inside, but traditionally, you’ll find that almost everything you eat in an Irish full breakfast is also stuffed inside one of these rolls. This includes bacon, sausages, black or white pudding, fried eggs, mushrooms, and tomatoes smothered in Irish butter and brown sauce. Trust me, you’ll be full past lunchtime after one of these! A great thing to grab if you’re planning to hike after breakfast, as you’ll be fueled up for the journey.

Cockles & Mussels

In Dublin, you might pass a statue of the famous “Molly Malone,” from the famous Irish song about a fishmonger who sold “cockles and mussels” on the streets of Dublin. Cockles are small, edible bivalves similar to clams, and although they are rarer to be found on the menus today, Irish mussels are still popular. Both are harvested from Ireland’s clean coastal waters, which is why they taste so fresh and delicious! Often cooked in white wine or Irish stout, this light sauce elevates the naturally salty flavours of the shellfish. If you’re lucky enough to spot cockles on the menu, definitely give them a try. Small, salty shellfish, often found in tidal flats along the Irish coast, have a similar briny, slightly sweet flavour. They are so small compared to mussels and clams, but intensely flavourful!

Dingle Gin

Everyone talks about Guinness and Jameson, but Dingle Gin is an under-the-radar drink which you need top try on your next trip! Dingle Gin is an award-winning craft gin produced by the Dingle Distillery in County Kerry. Known for its distinctive and artisanal approach, Dingle Gin stands out due to its use of local botanicals. Among the 13 botanicals used, some are sourced from the surrounding Kerry landscape, including rowan berries, bog myrtle, hawthorn, and heather, which give the gin a distinctive floral and herbaceous profile, reflecting the rugged beauty of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. The fruity florals really come across in a gin and tonic, and this drink is one of the most refreshing cocktails I’ve ever had. Anytime I saw Dingle Gin behind the bar, I knew what I was ordering.

Oysters

Another surprise we found on the trip was the bounty of oysters we discovered along our coastal drives, specifically Glenbeigh Oysters. Irish oysters are renowned for their exceptional quality and distinctive flavour, thanks to the pristine, nutrient-rich waters surrounding Ireland. The Glenbeigh oysters are a premium variety of Irish oysters harvested from the unsoiled waters of Castlemaine Harbour, located in Glenbeigh, in County Kerry. They are highly sought after by seafood lovers worldwide. But of course, the best place to try them is right along the waters where they’re caught! There was nothing like balancing the saltiness of the oysters with the fresh, crisp lager. Some may pair oysters with wine, but here in Ireland, you’ll find they are best enjoyed with a pint of Guinness.

Dough Bros Pizza

Pizza might seem like one of the odder things to find on a list of foods to eat in Ireland, but Dough Bros Pizza was one of the most outstanding pizzas I’ve had anywhere in the world and is a must-try when Galway. The pizzas at Dough Bros are cooked in a traditional wood-fired oven, which gives the crust a signature charred, smoky flavour with a chewy, soft texture. Dough Bros uses a mix of Italian ingredients, such as San Marzano tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella, alongside locally sourced Irish produce, creating this fantastic blend of traditional Italian flavours and the freshness of Irish ingredients. After so much traditional Irish cuisine, it’s always nice to change it up!

Eating Gluten-Free in Ireland?

Ireland is also one of the most accessible cities to travel to if you have a gluten allergy. Ireland has one of the highest rates of coeliac disease in Europe. Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition where gluten (found in wheat, barley, and rye) triggers severe digestive issues. Due to this higher prevalence, there is a strong demand for gluten-free options nationwide. As a result, many restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets have adapted to cater to people who need gluten-free diets, making gluten-free food widely available. On almost every menu, you would see an extensive list of allergens in each dish, and I was so impressed at how easy and accessible this made ordering food if you suffer from allergies. Even in the small towns, we saw them making many accommodations, so never hesitate to ask!

Ireland’s food scene is a celebration of the country’s rich heritage and abundant natural resources. From the creamy indulgence of Irish butter to the tender sweetness of local seafood like oysters and lobster, each dish is a testament to Ireland’s deep connection to its land and sea. These iconic Irish dishes are not just meals but experiences that connect you to the heart of Ireland.

Don’t Spend too much time in Dublin

Exploring Ireland to its fullest means getting out of the city! Too many travellers fly in and out of Dublin without leaving the city! One of the biggest draws of Ireland is its stunning natural landscapes, which include rugged coastlines, green rolling hills, dramatic cliffs, and picturesque countryside.

Instead, Rent a Car or Take the Train to the Countryside

Spending too much time in Dublin means you might miss out on iconic destinations like the Cliffs of Moher, Ring of Kerry, Connemara, and Giant’s Causeway, which showcase Ireland’s breathtaking natural beauty. Even just taking a one-day trip from the city doesn’t allow you to get immersed into the landscape like renting a car or simply taking the train to another town on the other side of the country does.

If you aren’t planning a full-on road trip but instead want to choose one destination to visit, I would recommend Cork for those travelling on the train. It’s a short train journey, and Cork is a big small town, so there are many public transit options to visit smaller cities like Cobh or Kinsale or spots like Blarney Castle. From Cork, it’s a much shorter journey to the Cliffs of Moher or other places along the east coast, which you can visit via guided bus.

If you’re travelling by car and can only select one additional spot, I recommend Dingle or Doolin. These little seaside villages offer some of the most charming Irish atmosphere. Doolin is just a hop, skip, and jump from the famous Cliffs of Moher and Dingle. It has some of the most incredible landscapes and is close to the Ring of Kerry if you want to drive that route on your way.

Don’t Rush Through the Country

I read so many blogs that it seemed like you could travel the whole country and see it all in seven days. But even if this were possible, it would mean spending mere minutes at each sight. When visiting Ireland, it’s best not to rush your itinerary and instead take your travels at a slower pace. The charm of Ireland lies in its scenic landscapes, cozy villages, and hidden gems, all of which are best appreciated when you take your time. Rushing from one tourist spot to the next can lead to missing out on spontaneous moments, such as stumbling upon a local pub with traditional music, engaging in friendly conversations with locals, or stopping to admire a breathtaking view along a coastal road. Travelling slowly also allows you to absorb the authentic atmosphere of small towns and villages, savour local food, and experience Ireland’s welcoming culture. The distances in Ireland might seem small, but the twisting, narrow roads make travelling even shorter distances a longer-than-expected drive.

Instead, Audit Your Itinerary

We appreciate the days so much when we would stay in a town for more than one day at a time. It allowed us a break from the constant packing and unpacking and to explore a hidden cliff path or take an hour or two to just sit by a quiet lake. You won’t be able to see it all and trust me, you’ll be thankful you removed a few spots from your list to take it easy and allow yourself to appreciate a moment of rest and relaxation over being stuck in your car every minute of the day. If a famous destination is out of the way and you’re detouring your entire trip to visit it, like the Cliffs of Moher, don’t feel like you’re ruining the whole trip by not seeing one of these “must-see” sights. That time you just spend in the car is much better spent making new friends in a pub, enjoying some craic, or wandering a local stone circle hiking trail where you can connect with the natural Irish landscape.

Don’t Just Book Hotels

Ireland has some of the best bed and breakfasts in the world, and staying at a chain hotel just isn’t the way to explore this incredible country. When booking the accommodation for our trip, one of the things I was most excited about was the bed and breakfast! The charm, architecture, characters you’ll meet and unique locations when booking a bed and breakfast (B&B) in Ireland are far superior to the comfort and familiarity of a typical hotel. Staying in a B&B allows you to experience genuine Irish hospitality. These establishments are often family-run, and hosts are known for being friendly, welcoming, and eager to share local tips and recommendations. You’re more likely to feel like a guest in someone’s home rather than just a tourist.

Instead, Book a Bed and Breakfast in a Historic Establishment

So many B&Bs in Ireland are located in historic properties, like old royal residences, royal hunting lodges, and even ancient palaces! Staying in these properties felt like moving into your very own castle! A few of the properties we stayed at even had their own private grounds with hikes and walking trails to explore where we didn’t see a single other tourist and felt like we had a slice of Ireland right to ourselves.

But my favourite part of the B&B is the second ‘B,’ BREAKFAST! Often included in the price, you’ll get a hearty home-cooked breakfast. These are most often served buffet style but will always include a traditional Irish breakfast consisting of eggs, sausages, bacon, black pudding, and freshly baked soda bread, setting you up for a day of exploring. Soda bread is a traditional Irish bread made without yeast and with the addition of buttermilk. The buttermilk gives the bread a mild, slightly tangy flavour, and the wholemeal flour adds an earthy, nutty taste that pairs fantastically with Irish butter and jam.

You Don’t Need to Fly in and out of Dublin

Many travellers book their arrival and return destination in and out of Dublin City airport without considering that Ireland has over five international airports and even more domestic options. This means you can have a little more flexibility when exploring the country.

Instead, Consider Flying in and out of different cities.

When planning a trip to Ireland, one great tip to maximize your experience is to fly into one airport and out of another, such as arriving at Cork or Belfast Airport and departing from Dublin Airport (or vice versa). This allows you to avoid a circular itinerary, meaning you don’t have to backtrack to your starting point. Returning a rental car to a different airport than where you picked it up might incur a small fee, but it can save you money on fuel and extra driving costs. Since Ireland has an extensive network of narrow, winding roads, particularly in rural areas, less time spent driving long distances means less fuel consumption and potentially a lower overall cost for your rental car.

Don’t Rent a BIG Car

Although the idea of being in a nice, roomy car with lots of space to stretch out and carrying lots of storage might seem appealing for an Irish road trip, the roads in Ireland are some of the narrowest in the world. Often, you’ll be going down what looks like a single-lane road, only to find a local Irish driver barreling down towards you, and the only way to let them pass is to practically drive off into the ditch. And in these moments, or when passing cars on narrow roads along the cliff, you will want to be in a wide, hard-to-steer car.

Instead, Rent compact cars or Multiple Cars for Big Groups.

The smaller and more compact your rental car is, the better. It also makes parking a breeze, and you’ll even save a bit of money on gas (or petrol as it’s called in Ireland). You might consider renting two smaller cars rather than a large van if travelling with a larger group. Not only does this mean you can split off if different members want to get up to different activities throughout your trip, but it will be less nerve-racking than driving a large van around the narrow, bendy roads.

Don’t Refer to Ireland as Part of the UK

One of the biggest faux pas you can make when visiting Ireland is confusing it with the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland is a sovereign nation, while Northern Ireland is part of the UK. The Republic of Ireland is its own country with a deep and complex history, and referring to it as part of the UK can be seen as disrespectful, particularly given the country’s struggles for independence.

Instead, Learn about Ireland’s History Before Arriving

Be mindful of the political and historical differences between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Brushing up on Ireland’s history before your trip is always a good idea to better understand the context and avoid awkward misunderstandings. Showing respect for Ireland’s distinct identity will go a long way with locals. One of my favourite ways to do this is by watching one of my favourite histories, Youbers, on the plane over, and I highly recommend these animated history videos.

Don’t Only Consdier the Ring of Kerry

The Ring of Kerry is one of Ireland’s most famous scenic drives. The circular route spans about 179 kilometres (111 miles) and hugs the coastline of the Iveragh Peninsula, offering panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, sandy beaches, and dramatic cliffs. Key coastal highlights include the Skellig Islands, visible from certain viewpoints, which are famous for their rugged beauty and as a filming location for Star Wars. But with this popularity comes hordes of tourists and, even worse, lots and lots of giant tour buses that make driving the narrow roads a little nail-biting. Even without the buses, the route is trendy, especially in summer, so the sights can get pretty crowded. Leaving early in the morning or travelling during off-peak months can help you avoid crowds. But even then, often, these spots aren’t as peaceful as you might expect.

Instead, Consider the Ring of Beara

If the Ring of Kerry’s touristy roads don’t appeal to you, an alternative scenic drive is the Ring of Beara. This stunning coastal route is less famous but equally, if not more, picturesque than the Ring of Kerry!

The Ring of Beara offers rugged and untouched beauty, with dramatic cliffs plunging into the Atlantic Ocean, quiet beaches, and panoramic views over Bantry Bay and the Kenmare River. The Ring of Beara is also much more peaceful and less commercialized, so if you prefer a more relaxed, off-the-beaten-path experience where you can enjoy the beauty of Ireland’s landscapes without the hustle and bustle of large crowds, the Ring of Beara is ideal.

The drive takes you through narrow mountain passes, such as the Healy Pass, which winds through stunning, rocky terrain and offers some of the most spectacular views in Ireland. The route is known for its lush valleys, rolling hills, and scenic lakes. And there is no shortage of quaint and charming towns and villages. The Ring of Beara is approximately 137 kilometres (85 miles) long; it’s slightly shorter than the Ring of Kerry, so if you’re looking for a slightly shorter day, especially for that traveller in the winter months when there is less daylight, this might be the better option.

Don’t Underestimate the Weather

Ireland’s weather is unpredictable. You might wake up to blue skies and sunshine, only to be in a downpour by the afternoon. It’s easy to overlook this and get wet and cold without the right gear.

Instead, Be Prepared for Every Season in One Day

Pack layers, a good rain jacket, and waterproof shoes! Embrace the unpredictable weather as part of Ireland’s charm, and remember that a bit of rain never stops an Irish adventure. If you’re renting a car, consider always having a change of clothes in the car and a few extra layers. Trust me, if you get soaked in the rain, you’ll be very thankful to have something on hand to change into so you don’t need to drive back to your accommodation soaking wet.

You Don’t Need a Car

Ok, so after all this talk of driving, you probably are thinking, I guess I NEED to rent a car if I want to visit Ireland. And the truth is, while renting a car allows you to explore so many parts of the country that just aren’t accessible by any other route if visiting Ireland is one of your travel dreams and you can’t drive or are too scared to drive on the other side of the road, there are other options! Ireland’s train network, operated by Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail), connects many key cities and towns, making it a convenient option for travellers. While not as extensive as other European countries, the rail system provides good access to major destinations, particularly along the East Coast and some parts of the South and West.

Instead, Consider Taking the Train

Dublin is Ireland’s primary hub for train travel, with two major stations. From Dublin, you can reach many other cities and towns across the country, like Cork, Galway, Belfast, Kilkenny, Killarney, and Sligo. While the train network doesn’t reach every part of Ireland, travelling between major cities and towns is convenient. To explore more remote locations, you can always take a bus tour from those major cities, such as a trip to the Cliffs of Mohr and Aran Island from Galway.

I highly recommend taking the train to Galway and seeing that city and then making a day trip, over only staying in Dublin and making all your day trips there. You’ll spend so much time on the bus, and by taking the train, you’ll still be able to explore some of Ireland’s great cities! You should also look into renting an e-bike to get out into the countryside but take things at your own pace. Ebikes mean you can take on that Irish wind without being a world-class athlete. And some of the cycling routes in Ireland are truly awe-inspiring.

Don’t Underrate the Food

When I returned from Ireland, many people asked me about my trip and were SHOCKED when I reported that one of my trip’s best parts was the food. There has been a persistent stereotype that Irish food is all about potatoes and stews. However, the image of Irish food as bland, basic, and lacking in variety stems from times of poverty and food scarcity. Ireland was an agricultural society for much of its history, and large portions of the population were poor, particularly after the Great Famine. The diet of the average Irish person was straightforward and revolved around staples like potatoes, oats, and root vegetables. While nutritious, these ingredients didn’t lend themselves to exciting or diverse culinary traditions.

Instead, Indulge in Fresh Seafood and farm-to-table menus.

But much of this has changed over time, not just in the big cities! Ireland is now celebrated for its high-quality, locally sourced ingredients, including some of the world’s best dairy, beef, and seafood. The emphasis on farm-to-table dining and fresh, seasonal produce has elevated Irish cuisine. Ireland’s restaurant scene has flourished, with many chefs focusing on modern Irish cuisine that draws from traditional ingredients but with creative and contemporary twists. Cities like Dublin, Cork, and Galway are home to Michelin-starred restaurants, and talented chefs are helping to redefine Irish food on the world stage. Our trip took us to so many coastal villages, and the seafood we had was OUT OF THIS WORLD! The crab bisque I had in Dingle was probably the best of my life.

Don’t Prioritize the Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher is one of Ireland’s most iconic and breathtaking natural attractions, rising dramatically from the Atlantic Ocean, reaching heights of up to 214 meters (702 feet) and stretching for about 14 kilometres (9 miles) along Ireland’s western coast in County Clare. The sheer drop and rugged cliff faces make for some of Ireland’s most awe-inspiring coastal views, especially on a clear day. But, as many travellers who’ve been to Ireland before have encountered, the weather in Ireland is rarely clear. Many disappointed travellers have made the long trek to the Cliffs only to be disappointed when they are barely visible through the fog and the rough winds blow so forcefully you’ll scarcely be able to walk, let alone stroll long enjoying the scenery along the cliffs.

Instead, Take the Slea Head Drive

If the touristy and unpredictable nature of the Cliffs of Moher isn’t your thing and you’re looking for an excellent alternative, you need to make a point to visit Dingle and take the stunning Slea Head Drive. Dingle was, without a doubt, my favourite place we stayed in Ireland. It is well worth at least two days exploring the Dingle Peninsula and its amazing rugged coastal scenery, complete with dramatic cliffs. The Slea Head Drive is a scenic loop that takes you along the westernmost edge of the Dingle Peninsula, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Blasket Islands, and the Wild Atlantic Way. The cliffs along this drive are as impressive as any in Ireland, and you’ll encounter numerous scenic viewpoints, including stops at places like Coumeenoole Beach and Dunquin Pier.

The drive is not just about the cliffs but also about immersing yourself in the beauty of mountainous landscapes, green fields, and coastal vistas. Dunmore Head is the westernmost point of mainland Ireland. The cliffs here are rugged, and the views over the Blasket Islands and the vast Atlantic Ocean are spectacular. The area is perfect for hiking or a quiet stroll, allowing you to take in the dramatic coastal scenery without the large tourist crowds of the Cliffs of Moher.

Don’t Miss the Gardens of Blarney Castle

Blarney Castle, located near Cork in southern Ireland, is probably one of the most famous sights in Ireland. This famous medieval stronghold dates back to the 15th century and is best known for the Blarney Stone, which is said to give those who kiss it the “gift of eloquence” or the ability to speak persuasively. Visitors must climb a steep, narrow staircase to reach it and lean backward over a gap (with assistance) to kiss the stone.

But they don’t tell you that the wait time to kiss the Blarney Stone is often the longest part of the visit, especially during peak tourist season (summer months). Depending on the time of year and day, the wait can be anywhere from 30 minutes to 2+ hours. The queue forms at the tower’s base and moves up a narrow spiral staircase. We got in line early in the morning, and our wait was over an hour. And the winding staircase up to the stone is dull, without much to see or entertain you. So bring a book or podcast, or spend the time catching up on your Instagram posts!

Instead, Consider Skipping the Kiss

If you come to Blarney Castle with limited time, consider not waiting in line and giving it a miss. I know, I know, “blasphemy!” you might say. But I watched so many visitors, mainly on time-sensitive bus tours, who were waiting in line, kissing the stone, and had to get right back on the bus. And they missed out on the best parts of visiting the castle. The castle is set amid beautiful gardens and offers visitors a glimpse into Ireland’s rich history and folklore. The land is believed to have been a sacred site for the Druids long before the medieval structure was erected. The Druids, the learned class of ancient Celtic societies, were known for their spiritual practices, which were closely tied to nature, the seasons, and sacred places. Several areas around Blarney Castle reflect these ancient connections, including the Rock Close (Druid’s Circle), Wishing Steps, and the Witch’s Kitchen. Missing out on exploring these places allows you to experience the spiritual energy and mystery of Ireland’s ancient past.

Don’t Forget Your VAT Refund

When buying Irish wool products or other expensive goods in Ireland, non-EU residents can often claim a tax refund (VAT refund). Ireland’s VAT rate on goods, including wool products, is 23%, so it’s no small fee that really adds up along the way. Look for stores displaying signs like “Tax-Free Shopping” or “VAT Refund “. These stores are registered to participate in the tax-free shopping refund. Ask the shop if they offer VAT refund forms when purchasing products. Some stores automatically provide these forms, while others may require you to request them. Usually, there is a minimum purchase amount to qualify for VAT refunds (e.g., €30), so check with the retailer. And be sure to keep all your receipts. There are different refund providers, and often, you can’t combine these forms, so you might have to keep track of which purchases go with which provider.

Instead, Ask for a VAT Refund Receipt

Before leaving Ireland or the EU, you must get your VAT refund form stamped at customs at the airport or point of departure. Present your receipts, purchased goods, passport, and completed VAT refund form at the VAT refund desk or self-service kiosks (usually found in major international airports). It might seem like a hassle if you aren’t spending too much money, but if you’re planning on bringing home lots of expensive wool products, you might save yourself money by getting the refund.

Don’t Forget to Booking Tickets in Advance

Ireland, especially in high season, can be very busy, and buying tickets in advance for popular attractions is highly recommended. Some sites, such as Newgrange or the Book of Kells exhibit at Trinity College, have limited daily admissions, so it is essential not to overlook booking these tickets in advance.

Instead, Plan Well Ahead of Time for Popular Attractions

Purchasing tickets in advance ensures entry and avoids disappointment, especially for attractions that sell out quickly. We saw many people getting turned away at the Book of Kells, and at Blarney Castle, the line to buy tickets was extremely long. Pre-booking tickets allows you to skip long lines and enjoy the site more than wait. Many attractions offer discounts or special rates for online bookings, so buying tickets in advance can save you money. Additionally, package deals for multiple attractions are often available online, providing more value for your trip.

Don’t miss the Irish Beaches!

You might be thinking that the last thing I expected to be associated with Ireland was beaches, but honestly, the beaches in Ireland are one of its most incredible hidden gems! Though Ireland is known for its green countryside, its beaches are equally captivating with their wild, unspoiled beauty. From the long stretches of sand at Inch Beach in County Kerry to the sandy dune of Brittas Bay, Irish beaches offer diverse scenery for beachgoers and adventurers alike. Even if it’s too cold to swim, Irish beaches offer views of the dramatic coastlines covered in golden sands and breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Instead, Jump on a Surfboard!

Despite the cooler climate, Irish beaches are famous for activities like surfing, especially along the Wild Atlantic Way, with spots like Bundoran and Lahinch drawing surfers worldwide. Or if surfing isn’t suitable for you or the time of year, visiting beaches like Ballycastle Beach in Northern Ireland and Curracloe Beach in County Wexford are a popular spot to sightsee as they have been featured in films like Game of Thrones and Saving Private Ryan.

Don’t Just Drink Guinness

Guinness is iconic, and you should try it fresh in Ireland. But it’s not the only drink in town; sticking only to it could mean missing out on other fantastic Irish beverages.

Instead, Sample Ireland’s Whiskeys and Gin

Due to triple distillation, Irish whiskey is unique for its smoothness, removing impurities and resulting in a lighter flavour than Scotch whisky. It typically uses both malted and unmalted barley, creating a creamy, spicy profile, and unlike Scotch, it’s generally peat-free, leading to a cleaner taste. One of the most famous whiskey brands in Ireland is Jameson, and you can even visit their distillery right in the heart of Dublin. Another surprising addition to the bar menus across the country was Irish-distilled gin! These local distilleries have been inspired by the botanicals from the Irish landscape, and if you see Dingle Gin behind the bar, definitely be sure to try it!

Don’t Visit Galway on a Weekend

You might want to avoid visiting Galway on a weekend because the city can get extremely crowded, particularly during popular times like summer or when festivals like the Galway Races or the Galway International Arts Festival are happening. The influx of tourists and locals on their stag and hen dos (bachelor and bachelorette parties) can lead to packed pubs, long restaurant queues, and high accommodation prices. Plus, the small streets and charming pedestrian areas can feel congested, making it harder to enjoy the city’s laid-back vibe.

Instead, Visit During the Week

Visiting during the week gives you a more relaxed experience, allowing you to explore Galway’s culture and attractions at a slower pace. Although some bars only have traditional music on the weekend, the most popular spots on the streets have music throughout the week, so you won’t miss out. Stop by Tigh Coili, Taaffes Bar, Tigh Neachtain or The Crane Bar for music all throughout the week.

Don’t Reserve The Book of Kells Experience During Restoration

The Book of Kells, located inside Trinity College Libary, is a medieval manuscript created by monks in the 9th century, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament, richly decorated with intricate and colourful illustrations and Celtic art. It is considered one of Ireland’s greatest cultural treasures and a masterpiece of early Christian art. But the Book of Kells isn’t just something you can flip through. Visitors can only view one illuminated manuscript page, which is changed periodically. The rest of the visit to the Book of Kells usually involved walking through the impressive Long Room library, which used to hold thousands of historical texts. However, the Long Room at Trinity College Dublin is undergoing major renovations as part of the Old Library Redevelopment Project. The renovations, which will continue through 2025, are focused on addressing environmental and structural challenges, such as dust accumulation and outdated fire safety measures, but the result is that much of the library is void of books, and some areas might be off limits.

Instead, Visit Marsh’s Libary

If you’re looking for an alternative to visiting the Book of Kells at Trinity College, consider heading to Marsh’s Library in Dublin. Established in 1707, it’s one of Ireland’s oldest public libraries and offers a quieter, less crowded experience while still steeped in history. The library is beautifully preserved, with original oak bookcases and a unique collection of rare manuscripts, books, and maps. It provides a more intimate glimpse into Ireland’s literary and scholarly past, making it an excellent alternative for those who avoid the tourist-heavy crowds at the Book of Kells.

Don’t Force a Visit to Temple Bar

Temple Bar is often promoted as the go-to spot for Dublin nightlife, but locals typically avoid it due to the large tourist crowds, high prices, and a somewhat manufactured “traditional” atmosphere. If you are hell-bent on seeing it, you can get your picture outside, which is honestly one of the only impressive things about it. There are more authentic pubs throughout Dublin where you can enjoy a traditional Irish experience at a fraction of the cost.

Instead, Try Exploring other Local Spots

If you’re looking for trad music, try heading to The Cobblestone, as this pub is known as the home of traditional Irish music. This spot offers an authentic and cozy atmosphere without the inflated prices due to its location outside the tourist centre. The Stag’s Head is another fantastic alternative to Temple Bar if you’re looking for a pub with a beautiful interior to sit down and enjoy a pint and a football match with some locations. This historic Victorian pub has been beautifully preserved with mahogany bars, mosaic floors, and stained glass. Although it’s still a spot many tourists visit, I found it much less busy than Temple Bar and even more beautiful.

For a laid-back, no-frills experience, Grogans is known for its simple atmosphere, great Guinness, and famous toastie (grilled cheese sandwich). Locals love its old-school charm and the outdoor seating area along William’s Street, which makes it a great spot to relax and enjoy the Dublin vibe. If you’re looking for a slice of history, head to The Long Hall, Dublin’s oldest pub. Established in 1766, this luxurious traditional pub is beautifully decorated with filigree-edged mirrors and polished dark wood, making you feel like you have stepped back in time while drinking your pint of Guinness.

Book Your Rental Car in Advance

But with so many visitors renting cars, ensuring your rental is booked well in advance is even more important. Additionally, if you’re visiting outside of Europe, you might be surprised to find that most of the available rental cars in Ireland are manual and not automatic. And if you’ve never driven a manual car before, trust me, the Irish country roads are NOT the place to learn! Booking in advance ensures you’ll get the automatic car you want, and of course, you’ll find better prices in advance compared to the last minute.

Rent a SMALL Car

Although the idea of being in a nice, roomy car with lots of space to stretch out and carrying lots of storage might seem appealing for an Irish road trip, the roads in Ireland are some of the narrowest in the world. Often, you’ll be going down what looks like a single-lane road, only to find a local Irish driver barreling down towards you, and the only way to let them pass is to practically drive off into the ditch. And in these moments, or when passing cars on narrow roads along the cliff, you’ll be very thankful to have rented a little car. The smaller, the better. It also makes parking a breeze, and you’ll even save a bit of money on gas (or petrol as it’s called in Ireland).

You might consider renting two smaller cars rather than a large van if travelling with a larger group. Not only does this mean you can split off if different members want to get up to different activities throughout your trip, but it will definitely be less nerve-racking than driving a large van around the narrow, bendy roads.

You’ll Need Special Car Insurance

When we got our rental car, they asked us if we needed insurance, but as seasoned travellers, we are used to our credit cards covering most rental car insurance as it had in many other countries. But when we were urged to look at the fine print, we realized that, yes, indeed, our regular insurance did not cover Ireland! And honestly, after seeing the roads, I know why. The locals told us how many visitors lost their side mirrors to those surprise narrow turns! You’ll want the peace of mind that knowing if something happens, you’ll be covered. So double-check if your regular travel insurance has Ireland listed as driver’s insurance and what it covers. If you need extra coverage, your rental car agency should be able to help you find the best options.

Irish Toll Roads

Ireland has a few toll roads and highways around major cities. The main toll roads are found on motorways (indicated by an “M”) and include routes like M50 (Dublin Ring Road), M1 (Dublin to the Northern Ireland border), M7/M8 (Dublin to Limerick and Cork), and M4 (Dublin to Galway). There are also a few toll bridges and tunnels, such as the East Link Toll Bridge and the Dublin Port Tunnel.

The M50 Toll Road (e-Flow) in Dublin is the most famous and operates without physical toll booths. Instead, it uses an electronic toll system called e-Flow, where your car’s license plate is photographed, and you are billed afterward. If you’re in a rental car, most companies will automatically handle this toll for you and bill you after the fact, but you should check with the rental company to avoid extra charges. If not, you must pay the toll online by 8 pm the day after using the road. You can pay the fee online at eflow, but the easier way is to stop at a petrol station and find a Payzone station, where you can also pay the fee and don’t need to worry about doing it online later in the day. Toll charges range from about €1.90 to €3.00 per toll, depending on the road. The M50 toll costs about €3.10.

Is the Irish Toll Pass Worth Getting?

Our rental car agency allowed us to buy a Toll Pass for €5/day, enabling us to drive right through the toll pass gates without worrying about paying for each toll as we passed through or paying the e-tolls online. While the convenience of it is worth it if you’re driving a lot on the main highways, we found that most of our trip was in the rural areas off the main highway, so it would have been more economical to simply pay tolls as you go.

If you’re wondering if the toll pass will be worth it for you, you can check out this interactive map of all the tolls around Ireland to see how many you’ll be passing through. When we passed through the automatic payment gates, which didn’t require paying the toll at the booth, we saved a bit of time, but honestly, there was never a long line to pay, and the cars moved through very quickly, so it was not like this save you tons of time either.

Drive on the Left Side of the Road

One of the most important things to remember when driving in Ireland is that you’ll be driving on the left side of the road. This can be a bit disorienting if you’re coming from a country where driving on the right is the norm. Take extra care when turning, especially at intersections and roundabouts, where it’s easy to default to driving on the right.

If you’re renting a car, the steering wheel will be on the right-hand side, which can also take some getting used to. Give yourself time to adjust, and drive cautiously until you feel comfortable.

Mind the Narrow Roads

Ireland is famous for its narrow, winding roads, especially in rural areas. These roads can be quite different from the wide highways you might be used to. Some of Ireland’s roads are barely wide enough for two cars to pass, and in more remote areas, they may only fit one vehicle at a time. Passing bays are common, so if you encounter oncoming traffic, use them to let the other car pass safely.

Drive slowly and stay aware of your surroundings, as the roads can be curvy and visibility limited by hedges, stone walls, or hills. Don’t be afraid to let locals pass if they’re driving faster—they know these roads better than most visitors!

Understand the Speed Limits

In Ireland, speed limits are displayed in kilometers per hour (km/h), not miles. You’ll find that speed limits on rural roads can feel surprisingly high for the narrow, winding conditions, often ranging between 80-100 km/h. However, just because the posted speed limit is high doesn’t mean you have to drive at that speed. Drive at the speed you feel is safe, especially on unfamiliar or tricky roads.

In towns and cities, the speed limit is generally 50 km/h, while on major motorways, it can go up to 120 km/h. Pay attention to road signs, and remember that it’s always smarter to drive cautiously, especially in poor weather conditions.

Master the Roundabouts

Ireland has many roundabouts instead of traditional intersections, and if you’re not used to them, they can be a bit intimidating. When approaching a roundabout, yield to traffic coming from the right. Enter the roundabout when it’s clear and always use your indicator when exiting.

Take it slow if you’re unsure—locals are usually patient and will give you the space you need to navigate.

How to Prevent Car-Sickness

I get VERY sick in the car, especially on winding, narrow roads. So I can tell you I tested everything to find out what worked best to make me feel better and enjoy the streets as much as possible. If you’re prone to motion sickness, sitting in the front seat allows you to see the road ahead, reducing disorientation and nausea. Keep your eyes focused on a distant, stable object, like the horizon, to help your brain sync with the car’s motion. Ireland’s scenic routes offer plenty of places to stop and stretch. Frequent breaks for fresh air can help prevent motion sickness.

Ginger candies, ginger tea, or peppermint can help settle your stomach. These natural remedies are known for reducing nausea for those without severe sickness. Car-sick glasses, also known as anti-motion sickness glasses, are a relatively new and innovative solution designed to prevent motion sickness, including on Ireland’s winding roads. These glasses create an artificial horizon in your peripheral vision, which helps your brain align with the car’s motion, reducing the sensory conflict that causes nausea. I find that they work well for certain roads, but on the really winding, fast roads with sharp turns, the only thing that really works is medication. They make you drowsy, but I found that if I had a quick cat nap, I could be awake for the rest of the drive. Some people find motion sickness wristbands or ear patches work well, but I’ve never found they worked for me. But it’s always worth a try, as everyone reacts differently.

Irish Finger Flick

If you want to blend in like a local, when you encounter an oncoming vehicle on one of Ireland’s narrow roads, it’s customary for locals to acknowledge the other driver by lifting their index finger (usually of the right hand) just an inch or two from the steering wheel, often with a slight nod. This is a common roadside greeting that adds a nice touch to getting into the driving rhythm on these roads.

Pay Attention to Road Signs

Irish road signs can be a bit different from what you’re used to, especially if you’re travelling in the Gaeltacht region, where signs are written in Irish (Gaeilge). In most other areas, signs will be in both English and Irish. Familiarize yourself with common road signs and symbols before your trip, especially if you plan to drive in rural areas.

Watch for Sheep and Livestock

In rural Ireland, it’s not uncommon to encounter sheep, cows, or other livestock wandering onto the roads. If you find yourself behind a herd of sheep, don’t panic—simply slow down and wait for them to move. Farmers are usually nearby and will guide the animals off the road quickly. It’s all part of the authentic Irish countryside experience!

Driving in Ireland is an adventure all of its own. But it is the perfect way to explore the country’s hidden gems and breathtaking scenery at your own pace. The roads might be a bit narrow, and you’ll face more roundabouts than you’re used to, but with a little preparation and patience, you’ll soon get the hang of it. Before you know it, the drive becomes part of the fun. Take it slow, enjoy the journey, and soak in the experience—that’s what exploring Ireland is all about!

Don’t Spend too much time in Dublin

Exploring Ireland to its fullest means getting out of the city! Too many travellers fly in and out of Dublin without leaving the city! One of the biggest draws of Ireland is its stunning natural landscapes, which include rugged coastlines, green rolling hills, dramatic cliffs, and picturesque countryside. Spending too much time in Dublin means you might miss out on iconic destinations like the Cliffs of Moher, Ring of Kerry, Connemara, and Giant’s Causeway, which showcase Ireland’s breathtaking natural beauty. Even just taking a one-day trip from the city doesn’t allow you to get immersed into the landscape like renting a car or simply taking the train to another city on the other side of the country does.

Be Prepared for Unpredictable Weather

Ireland’s weather is famously unpredictable. And even in one day, you might experience all four seasons! The climate is generally mild, thanks to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream, but frequent changes in weather mean that travellers must be prepared for various conditions.

Ireland’s temperatures are relatively moderate year-round, with average highs ranging from 15–20°C (59–68°F) in summer and 5–10°C (41–50°F) in winter. Rain showers are frequent, no matter the season, so it’s best to be prepared for wet weather even if the forecast looks clear. Also, you must remember that coastal areas, particularly along the Wild Atlantic Way, can be quite windy, making it feel colder than the actual temperature.

Packing with versatility in mind is essential. Here’s what you should include:

Waterproof jacket or raincoat: A high-quality, lightweight, waterproof jacket is a must, as rain showers can occur anytime. Look for something that is easy to pack and can handle sudden downpours.

Layers: Layering is key to staying comfortable in Ireland’s changeable weather. Bring items like long-sleeve shirts, sweaters, and t-shirts that you can easily add or remove based on the temperature.

Comfortable walking shoes: Waterproof shoes or boots are ideal for exploring Ireland’s towns, countryside, and coastal paths. Make sure they have good traction, especially for slippery surfaces. If you’re going to be walking on any of Ireland’s countryside hikes, you’ll almost doubtlessly run into sheep and with sheep come sheep pop. And you’ll be very thankful to have the boots with you and not a fancy pair of shoes!

Umbrella: A strong, small, compact umbrella can be handy to keep in your day bag for quick protection against the rain, but it is not a substitute for a good raincoat, as the strong winds often make even the best umbrellas useful.

Warm clothing: It can get chilly in the summer, especially in the evenings or along the coast. Bring a warm sweater, fleece, or light jacket for those cooler moments.

Hat and gloves: Even in the late spring, it was great to have a pair of gloves, a hat and a scar on hand to keep us warm on cold, windy days. And if you’re visiting in the winter, you’ll need these!

If you’re travelling in a car, we always make sure to leave a packing cube filled with a change of clothes, both warmer and cooler, so we are prepared for any change of weather or if the clothes we were wearing god soaked through with rain. Trust me, even carrying a change of socks makes a big difference on a cold rainy day!

Travel out of Season if you want fewer Crowds.

I envisioned an isolated Irish countryside and sights devoid of people where I could experience a transcendental moment. But what surprised me was, even in remote locations, how many tourists there were even in Spring, before the height of the summer months. If you’re looking to avoid the busiest tourist season in Ireland, the low season runs from November to the middle of March. However, there are some considerations to make when visiting outside of tourist season, aside from the obvious, such as the cold, damp weather. Irish winter days are short, so you must plan your itinerary accordingly. Additionally, some places might be closed out of season, so you’ll want to check in advance if any sights on your “must-see” list are closed for the season.

Don’t Rush Through the Country

I read so many blogs that made it seem like you could travel the whole country and see it all in seven days. But even if this were possible, it would mean spending mere minutes at each sight. When visiting Ireland, it’s best not to rush your itinerary and instead take your travels at a slower pace. The charm of Ireland lies in its scenic landscapes, cozy villages, and hidden gems, all of which are best appreciated when you take your time. Rushing from one tourist spot to the next can lead to missing out on spontaneous moments, such as stumbling upon a local pub with traditional music, engaging in friendly conversations with locals, or stopping to admire a breathtaking view along a coastal road. Travelling slowly also allows you to absorb the authentic atmosphere of small towns and villages, savour local food, and experience Ireland’s welcoming culture. The distances in Ireland might seem small, but the twisting, narrow roads make travelling even shorter distances a longer-than-expected drive.

We appreciate the days so much when we would stay in a town for more than one day at a time. It allowed us a break from the constant packing and unpacking and also gave us opportunities to explore a hidden cliff path or take an hour or two to just sit by a quiet lake. You won’t be able to see it all and trust me, you’ll be thankful you removed a few spots from your list to take it easy and allow yourself to appreciate a moment of rest and relaxation over being stuck in your car every minute of the day.

Book a Bed and Breakfast!

When booking the accommodation for our trip, one of the things I was most excited about was the bed and breakfast! The charm, architecture, characters you’ll meet and unique locations when booking a bed and breakfast (B&B) in Ireland are far superior to the comfort and familiarity of a normal hotel. Staying in a B&B allows you to experience true Irish hospitality. These establishments are often family-run, and hosts are known for being friendly, welcoming, and eager to share local tips and recommendations. You’re more likely to feel like a guest in someone’s home rather than just a tourist.

So many B&Bs in Ireland are located in historic properties, like old royal residences, royal hunting lodges, and even ancient palaces! Staying in these properties felt like moving into your very own castle! A few of the properties we stayed at even had their own private grounds with hikes and walking trails to explore where we didn’t see a single other tourist and felt like we had a slice of Ireland right to ourselves.

But my favourite part of the B&B is the second ‘B’, BREAKFAST! Often included in the price, you’ll get a hearty home-cooked breakfast. These are most often served buffet style but will always include a traditional Irish breakfast, which can include eggs, sausages, bacon, black pudding, and freshly baked soda bread, setting you up for a day of exploring. Soda bread is a traditional Irish bread made without yeast and with the addition of buttermilk. The buttermilk gives the bread a mild, slightly tangy flavour, and the wholemeal flour adds an earthy, nutty taste that pairs fantastically with Irish butter and jam.

You Don’t Need to Fly in and out of Dublin

When planning a trip to Ireland, one great tip to maximize your experience is to fly into one airport and out of another, such as arriving at Cork Airport and departing from Dublin Airport (or vice versa). This allows you to avoid a circular itinerary, meaning you don’t have to backtrack to your starting point. Returning a rental car to a different airport than where you picked it up might incur a small fee, but it can save you money on fuel and extra driving costs. Since Ireland has an extensive network of narrow, winding roads, particularly in rural areas, less time spent driving long distances means less fuel consumption and potentially a lower overall cost for your rental car.

The Best Driving Tips

Book Your Rental Car in Advance

But with so many visitors renting cars, this means that ensuring your rental is booked well in advance is even more important. Additionally, if you’re visiting outside of Europe, you might be surprised to find that most of the available rental cars in Ireland are manual and not automatic. And if you’ve never driven a manual car before, trust me, the Irish country roads are NOT the place to learn! Booking in advance ensures you’ll get the automatic car you want, and of course, you’ll find better prices in advance compared to the last minute.

Rent a SMALL Car

Although the idea of being in a nice, roomy car with lots of space to stretch out and carrying lots of storage might seem appealing for an Irish road trip, the roads in Ireland are some of the narrowest in the world. Often, you’ll be going down what looks like a single-lane road, only to find a local Irish driver barreling down towards you, and the only way to let them pass is to practically drive off into the ditch. And in these moments, or when passing cars on narrow roads along the cliff, you’ll be very thankful to have rented a little car. The smaller, the better. It also makes parking a breeze, and you’ll even save a bit of money on gas (or petrol as it’s called in Ireland).

You might consider renting two smaller cars rather than a large van if travelling with a larger group. Not only does this mean you can split off if different members want to get up to different activities throughout your trip, but it will definitely be less nerve-racking than driving a large van around the narrow, bendy roads.

You’ll Need Special Car Insurance

When we got our rental car, they asked us if we needed insurance, but as seasoned travellers, we are used to our credit cards covering most rental car insurance as it had in many other countries. But when we were urged to look at the fine print, we realized that, yes, indeed, our regular insurance did not cover Ireland! And honestly, after seeing the roads, I know why. The locals told us how many visitors lost their side mirrors to those surprise narrow turns! You’ll want the peace of mind that knowing if something happens, you’ll be covered. So double-check if your regular travel insurance has Ireland listed as driver’s insurance and what it covers. If you need extra coverage, your rental car agency should be able to help you find the best options.

Irish Toll Roads

Ireland has a few toll roads and highways around major cities. The main toll roads are found on motorways (indicated by an “M”) and include routes like M50 (Dublin Ring Road), M1 (Dublin to the Northern Ireland border), M7/M8 (Dublin to Limerick and Cork), and M4 (Dublin to Galway). There are also a few toll bridges and tunnels, such as the East Link Toll Bridge and the Dublin Port Tunnel.

The M50 Toll Road (e-Flow) in Dublin is the most famous and operates without physical toll booths. Instead, it uses an electronic toll system called e-Flow, where your car’s license plate is photographed, and you are billed afterward. If you’re in a rental car, most companies will automatically handle this toll for you and bill you after the fact, but you should check with the rental company to avoid extra charges. If not, you must pay the toll online by 8 pm the day after using the road. You can pay the fee online at eflow, but the easier way is to stop at a petrol station and find a Payzone station, where you can also pay the fee and don’t need to worry about doing it online later in the day. Toll charges range from about €1.90 to €3.00 per toll, depending on the road. The M50 toll costs about €3.10.

Is the Irish Toll Pass Worth Getting?

Our rental car agency allowed us to buy a Toll Pass for €5/day, enabling us to drive right through the toll pass gates without worrying about paying for each toll as we passed through or paying the e-tolls online. While the convenience of it is worth it if you’re driving a lot on the main highways, we found that most of our trip was in the rural areas off the main highway, so it would have been more economical to simply pay tolls as you go.

When we passed through the automatic payment gates, which didn’t require paying the toll at the booth, we saved a bit of time, but honestly, there was never a long line to pay, and the cars moved through very quickly, so it was not like this save you tons of time either.

The Roads REALLY are that Intense!

I had heard so much about roads in Ireland, but honestly, nothing prepared me for how narrow and curvy they were and how FAST the speed limits were set! We would drive along narrow countryside roads and see speed limits of 80-100km/h!! I couldn’t believe how the local drivers did it. Coming from Canada, we see speed limits as a guide to the average speed you should drive and nothing over, but we found in Ireland it was much smarter to drive at the speed you felt the safest driving as this not only protects yourself and those in your car but other drivers as well. If you have a speedy local driving behind you, kindly let them pass. They are used to tourists and will appreciate being able to pass you by to let you go at your own pace.

How to Prevent Car-Sickness

I get VERY sick in the car, especially on winding, narrow roads. So I can tell you I tested everything to find out what worked best to make me feel better and enjoy the streets as much as possible. If you’re prone to motion sickness, sitting in the front seat allows you to see the road ahead, reducing disorientation and nausea. Keep your eyes focused on a distant, stable object, like the horizon, to help your brain sync with the car’s motion. Ireland’s scenic routes offer plenty of places to stop and stretch. Frequent breaks for fresh air can help prevent motion sickness.

Ginger candies, ginger tea, or peppermint can help settle your stomach. These natural remedies are known for reducing nausea for those without severe sickness. Car-sick glasses, also known as anti-motion sickness glasses, are a relatively new and innovative solution designed to prevent motion sickness, including on Ireland’s winding roads. These glasses create an artificial horizon in your peripheral vision, which helps your brain align with the car’s motion, reducing the sensory conflict that causes nausea. I find that they work well for certain roads, but on the really winding, fast roads with sharp turns, the only thing that really works is medication. Tips on Driving the Ring of Kerry

Ok, now that you have your rental car and are ready to hit the road, one of the first places many travellers go is to the Ring of Kerry. The Ring of Kerry is one of Ireland’s most famous scenic drives. The circular route spans about 179 kilometres (111 miles) and hugs the coastline of the Iveragh Peninsula, offering panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, sandy beaches, and dramatic cliffs. Key coastal highlights include the Skellig Islands, visible from certain viewpoints, which are famous for their rugged beauty and as a filming location for Star Wars. Along the route, you’ll find picturesque towns and villages like Killarney, Kenmare, Sneem, and Cahersiveen, as well as historic sights like Ross Castle. One of the highlights of the Ring of Kerry, Killarney National Park is home to ancient woodlands, serene lakes, and the stunning Torc Waterfall.

What Direction to Drive the Ring of Kerry?

The best tip for driving the Ring of Kerry is to start the ring counterclockwise (starting in Killarney and heading toward Kenmare). All the large tour buses agree to drive counterclockwise, so by driving opposite the buses, you won’t need to worry about being stuck behind them or having all the stops overrun with the tourists coming off those buses, most of which run on very similar schedules.

Even without the buses, the route is very popular, especially in summer, so it can be crowded. Leaving early in the morning or travelling during off-peak months can help you avoid crowds.

Alternative to the Ring of Kerry, The Ring of Beara

If the Ring of Kerry‘s touristy roads don’t appeal to you, an alternative scenic drive is the Ring of Beara. This stunning coastal route is less famous but equally, if not more, picturesque than the Ring of Kerry!

The Ring of Beara offers rugged and untouched beauty, with dramatic cliffs plunging into the Atlantic Ocean, quiet beaches, and panoramic views over Bantry Bay and the Kenmare River. The Ring of Beara is also much quieter and less commercialized, so if you prefer a more relaxed, off-the-beaten-path experience where you can enjoy the beauty of Ireland’s landscapes without the hustle and bustle of large crowds, the Ring of Beara is ideal.

The drive takes you through narrow mountain passes, such as the Healy Pass, which winds through stunning, rocky terrain and offers some of the most spectacular views in Ireland. The route is known for its lush valleys, rolling hills, and scenic lakes. And there is no shortage of quaint and charming towns and villages.

The Ring of Beara is approximately 137 kilometres (85 miles) long; it’s slightly shorter than the Ring of Kerry, so if you’re looking for a slightly shorter day, especially for that traveller in the winter months when there is less daylight, this might be the better option.

Ireland Drives on the Left Side of the Road.

Driving on the left side of the road in Ireland can be a bit of an adjustment for visitors from countries where driving on the right is the norm. The driver’s seat is on the car’s right-hand side, and roundabouts (traffic circles) move clockwise. It’s important to stay alert, especially when navigating narrow rural roads or making turns, as instinct might cause confusion. Many rental cars even have signs inside the vehicle reminding you to drive on the left, so you’ll always remember front and center!

You Don’t Need a Car to see Parts of Ireland

Ok, so after all this talk of driving, you probably are thinking, I guess I NEED to rent a car if I want to visit Ireland. And the truth is, while renting a car allows you to explore so many parts of the country that just aren’t accessible by any other route if visiting Ireland is one of your travel dreams and you can’t drive or are too scared to drive on the other side of the road, there are other options! Ireland’s train network, operated by Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail), connects many key cities and towns, making it a convenient option for travellers. While not as extensive as other European countries, the rail system provides good access to major destinations, particularly along the East Coast and some parts of the South and West. Dublin is Ireland’s primary hub for train travel, with two major stations. From Dublin, you can reach many other cities and towns across the country, like Cork, Galway, Belfast, Kilkenny, Killarney, and Sligo.

While the train network doesn’t reach every part of Ireland, travelling between major cities and towns is convenient. To explore more remote locations, you can always take a bus tour from those major cities, such as a trip to the Cliffs of Mohr and Aran Island from Galway. I highly recommend taking the train to Galway and seeing that city and then making a day trip, over only staying in Dublin and making all your day trips from there. You’ll spend so much time on the bus, and by taking the train, you’ll still be able to explore some of Ireland’s great cities!

What to Eat in Ireland?

When I came back from Ireland, many people asked me about my trip and were SHOCKED when I reported that one of my trip’s best parts was the food. There has been a persistent stereotype that Irish food is all about potatoes and stews. However, the image of Irish food as bland, basic, and lacking in variety stems from times of poverty and food scarcity. Ireland was an agricultural society for much of its history, and large portions of the population were poor, particularly after the Great Famine. The diet of the average Irish person was very simple and revolved around staples like potatoes, oats, and root vegetables. While nutritious, these ingredients didn’t lend themselves to exciting or diverse culinary traditions.

But much of this has changed over time, not just in the big cities! Ireland is now celebrated for its high-quality, locally sourced ingredients, including some of the world’s best dairy, beef, and seafood. The emphasis on farm-to-table dining and fresh, seasonal produce has elevated Irish cuisine. Ireland’s restaurant scene has flourished, with many chefs focusing on modern Irish cuisine that draws from traditional ingredients but with creative and contemporary twists. Cities like Dublin, Cork, and Galway are home to Michelin-starred restaurants, and talented chefs are helping to redefine Irish food on the world stage. Our trip took us to so many coastal villages, and the seafood we had was OUT OF THIS WORLD! The crab bisque I had in Dingle was probably the best of my life.

Eating Gluten-Free in Ireland?

Ireland is also one of the most accessible cities to travel to if you have a gluten allergy. Ireland has one of the highest rates of coeliac disease in Europe. Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition where gluten (found in wheat, barley, and rye) triggers severe digestive issues. Due to this higher prevalence, there is a strong demand for gluten-free options nationwide. As a result, many restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets have adapted to cater to people who need gluten-free diets, making gluten-free food widely available. On almost every menu, you would see an extensive list of allergens in each dish, and I was so impressed at how easy and accessible this made ordering food if you suffer from allergies. Even in the small towns, we saw them making lots of accommodations, so never hesitate to ask!

Enjoy the Craic!

Craic (pronounced “crack”) is a uniquely Irish term that refers to the spirit of gatherings filled with good times, fun, and lively conversation. Craic is more than just having fun—it’s about the social connection that happens when people come together, friends and strangers, to share stories, music, and laughter, especially in informal, welcoming environments like pubs. You might hear phrases that describe the level or quality of craic:

• “Great craic“: A fantastic time, lots of fun and laughter.
• “The craic was ninety“: A colloquial way of saying it was at its peak or exceptionally fun.
• “No craic“: A disappointing or dull time.
• “What’s the craic?“: A common greeting meaning “What’s going on?” or “What’s the news?”

In Ireland, craic often goes hand-in-hand with traditional Irish pub music sessions. The atmosphere created by live music, singing, and sometimes dancing is a big part of what makes the craic so enjoyable. Galway has named itself the so-called “Capital of Craic” because of its love for music and nightlife. I found the best craic in intimate pubs in the small towns where we stayed. When you check into your bed and breakfast, ask the owners where their favourite place to go for craic is. You’ll immediately find the best local spot for great music and meeting new friends.

Advice on Visiting the Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher is one of Ireland’s most iconic and breathtaking natural attractions, rising dramatically from the Atlantic Ocean, reaching heights of up to 214 meters (702 feet) and stretching for about 14 kilometres (9 miles) along Ireland’s western coast in County Clare. The sheer drop and rugged cliff faces make for some of Ireland’s most awe-inspiring coastal views, especially on a clear day.

Check the Weather

But, as many travellers who’ve been to Ireland before have encountered, the weather in Ireland is rarely clear. Many disappointed travellers have made the long trek to the Cliffs only to be disappointed when they are barely visible through the fog and the rough winds blow so forcefully you’ll barely be able to walk, let alone stroll long enjoying the scenery along the cliffs. Visiting on your own, compared to a tour group, lets you wait out the weather in your car before heading to the cliffs if necessary. Regardless of the weather, I always advise bringing a packed lunch to enjoy while waiting out the weather in your car or picnicking on the cliff’s edge to soak in that scenery. But remember, while the cliffs are dramatic and stunning, they are also very high and exposed to strong winds. Stay within the designated safe areas, and be cautious near the edge. Venturing too close to the cliff edge can be dangerous, as parts of the cliff can be unstable or slippery in wet conditions.

Parking at the Cliff of Moher

As one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions, the cliffs can get quite crowded, especially during peak tourist season (summer) or midday. Parking is a headache during high season. Although a large car park is available at the Cliffs of Moher visitor center, and all-day parking is included in the price of the visitor center ticket, even this paid lot can get full very quickly. If you book an off-peak ticket online, the prices cost €8 per adult (children are free) or €4 per adult.

You can park at Guerin’s Path, about 1km from the visitor center, for €5 per person to find alternative parking. You can also park near Hag’s Head, the southernmost point of the cliffs, where there’s a small car park with a €2 honesty box, and it’s just a 10-minute walk to the cliffs. If you’re willing to walk a bit more, you can also park in the nearby villages of Liscannor or Doolin.

Other Tips for Visiting the Cliffs of Moher

While the visitor center and main viewing platforms offer excellent views, the real magic of the cliffs can often be found further along the coastal paths. Consider walking along the Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk, which stretches from Doolin to Liscannor. This route provides spectacular views without the crowds. If you love birdwatching, bring binoculars, as the cliffs are home to large colonies of puffins, guillemots, and other seabirds during the nesting season (April to July).

One of the most beautiful times to visit the Cliffs of Moher is sunset, when the light softens, and the cliffs glow with warm golden hues. The area is also much less crowded in the evening, with many of the tour buses having already gotten back on the roads, heading back to Dublin and Galway, offering a more peaceful and personal experience.

Alternative to the Cliffs of Moher, Slea Head Drive in Dingle

If the touristy nature of the Cliffs of Moher isn’t your thing and you’re looking for an excellent alternative, you need to make a point to visit Dingle and take the stunning Slea Head Drive. Dingle was, without a doubt, my favourite place we visited in Ireland. It is well worth at least two days exploring the Dingle Peninsula and its amazing rugged coastal scenery, complete with dramatic cliffs. The Slea Head Drive is a scenic loop that takes you along the westernmost edge of the Dingle Peninsula, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Blasket Islands, and the Wild Atlantic Way. The cliffs along this drive are as impressive as any in Ireland, and you’ll encounter numerous scenic viewpoints, including stops at places like Coumeenoole Beach and Dunquin Pier. The drive is not just about the cliffs but also about immersing yourself in the beauty of mountainous landscapes, green fields, and coastal vistas. Dunmore Head is the westernmost point of mainland Ireland. The cliffs here are rugged, and the views over the Blasket Islands and the vast Atlantic Ocean are spectacular. The area is perfect for hiking or a quiet stroll, allowing you to take in the dramatic coastal scenery without the large tourist crowds of the Cliffs of Moher.

Gaelic is the Second Official Language

Gaelic (Irish) is the second official language of Ireland. Gaelic holds a significant place in the country’s cultural identity and heritage and is still spoken as a first language in some rural areas, particularly in regions known as the Gaeltacht, which includes parts of counties like Donegal, Galway, Kerry, and Mayo. Road signs often prioritize the Irish language, so don’t be surprised if you repeatedly see the word “Go Mal” as you make sharp turns, which means “Go Slow.”

Discover the Stone Circles

Stone circles in Ireland are ancient megalithic monuments, typically consisting of large stones arranged in a circular or oval pattern. Though some may be older, these fascinating structures date back to the Bronze Age (circa 2500–500 BCE). While their exact purpose remains somewhat mysterious, it is widely believed that they were used for ceremonial, religious, or astronomical purposes. Many of these stone circles are aligned with significant solar events, such as the summer solstice or equinoxes, suggesting that ancient people used them to track celestial movements.

One of the easiest Stone Circles to visit is the Kenmare Stone Circle in County Kerry, near the famous Ring of Kerry Drive. This smaller stone circle, often called the Shrubberies, offers a peaceful, easily accessible site for visitors. A more off-the-beaten-path stone circle located in one of the most incredible landscapes is the Cashelkeelty stone circle. The walk to the stone circle is not too long from the parking lot, but this peaceful walk through the forest allows you to connect more deeply with the landscape, giving you the best chance to have a special moment when visiting the stones.

Tips on Visiting the Giant’s Causeway

If you’re planning to visit the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, one important tip to remember is that you don’t need to go through the Visitor Centre to enjoy the incredible natural wonder. The Visitor Centre, while modern and informative, functions largely as a gift shop and exhibit space and charges an entry fee. However, access to the actual Giant’s Causeway site and the surrounding UNESCO World Heritage Site is free, so you can avoid the fee by bypassing the Centre altogether.

The main walking path to the Giant’s Causeway is beside the Visitor Centre. Instead of entering the Centre, you can simply take the path around it and follow the signs that lead directly to the famous basalt columns. Another free and scenic route is walking down the causeway via the beach. Not only does this offer stunning coastline views, but you’ll also avoid crowds often congregating near the Visitor Centre.

Grab Gas Station Irish Breakfast Roll

One of the biggest surprises we had was exploring the gas stations whenever we stopped to fill the tank. Gas stations, or petrol stations as they’re called here, are more than just places to refuel your car—they can also be a great place to grab a quick, affordable, and tasty meal. They often have freshly prepared meals, including breakfast rolls, hot sandwiches, soups, and pastries. Irish gas stations take pride in providing hearty food to cater to locals and travellers, and the food quality is often much higher than expected.

My favourite on-the-road breakfast became an Irish breakfast roll from the gas station. The breakfast roll is packed with sausages, rashers (bacon), eggs, black and white pudding, and sometimes hash browns—all served inside a soft roll. It’s a filling, delicious, and affordable option that can set you up for a full day of exploring. And don’t forget to grab a few packs of brown sauce, a classic condiment in Ireland. And all the bathrooms I found along the way in these gas stations were super clean, which made every stop an absolute pleasure.

How to Get a Bus to Stop

Although this is more common in Europe, coming from North America, where buses will automatically stop at every bus stop, I had to learn the hard way that, in many cases, you do need to put your hand out to signal that you want to board a bus in Ireland, particularly in urban areas like Dublin or smaller towns where buses won’t stop unless a passenger signals them. Otherwise, the bus may pass by, assuming no one is getting on. When you’re on the bus and want to get off at the next stop, most buses have a “stop” button you can press, which signals to the driver that you’d like to get off at the next available stop. Also, be aware that many buses will not accept cash or give change, so buy your tickets from the station to avoid getting booted off the bus!

Blarney Castle is more than just the Stone.

Blarney Castle, located near Cork in southern Ireland, is probably one of the most famous sights in Ireland. This famous medieval stronghold dates back to the 15th century and is best known for the Blarney Stone, which is said to give those who kiss it the “gift of eloquence” or the ability to speak persuasively. Visitors must climb a steep, narrow staircase to reach it and lean backward over a gap (with assistance) to kiss the stone.

But they don’t tell you that the wait time to kiss the Blarney Stone is often the longest part of the visit, especially during peak tourist season (summer months). Depending on the time of year and day, the wait can be anywhere from 30 minutes to 2+ hours. The queue forms at the tower’s base and moves up a narrow spiral staircase. We got in line early in the morning, and our wait was over an hour. And the winding staircase up to the stone is boring, without much to see or entertain you. So bring a book or podcast, or spend the time catching up on your Instagram posts!

But honestly, if you come to Blarney Castle with limited time, consider not waiting in line and giving it a miss. I know, I know, “blasphemy!” you might say. But I watched so many visitors, mainly on time-sensitive bus tours, who were waiting in line, kissing the stone, and had to get right back on the bus. And they missed out on the best parts of visiting the castle. The castle is set amid beautiful gardens and offers visitors a glimpse into Ireland’s rich history and folklore. The land is believed to have been a sacred site for the Druids long before the medieval structure was erected. The Druids, the learned class of ancient Celtic societies, were known for their spiritual practices, closely tied to nature, the seasons, and sacred places. Several areas around Blarney Castle reflect these ancient connections, including the Rock Close (Druid’s Circle), Wishing Steps, and the Witch’s Kitchen. Missing out on exploring these places allows you to experience the spiritual energy and mystery of Ireland’s ancient past.

What to Know Before Buying Irish Wool Products

Irish wool is famous for its exceptional quality, warmth, and durability, largely due to the rugged climate in which the sheep are raised. Wool from breeds like the Irish Galway and Donegal sheep is known for its thickness and resilience, making it ideal for crafting traditional garments such as Aran sweaters. These sweaters are functional and steeped in Irish cultural history, featuring unique patterns that represent Irish heritage.

Purchasing wool from trusted vendors or shops specializing in Irish wool is important, as some souvenir shop sweaters might be manufactured elsewhere. Look for labels that say “Made in Ireland” or “100% Irish Wool.” Brands like Avoca, Blarney Woollen Mills, and Aran Sweater Market are popular and reputable for purchasing Irish wool products. And consider purchasing from smaller, local businesses or artisans who craft their wool products by hand.

Authentic, handcrafted Irish wool products, especially those made by local artisans, will cost more than mass-produced items. Aran sweaters, for instance, can range from €80 to €300 depending on where and how they’re made. There are two types of Irish wool. The first is Merino Wool, which is softer and less itchy than traditional wool and Aran Wool, which is thicker than traditional Irish wool, made into iconic cable-knit patterns which tend to be warmer and more durable but may feel coarser than other wools.

Don’t Forget Your VAT Refund

When buying Irish wool products or other expensive goods in Ireland, non-EU residents can often claim a tax refund (VAT refund). Ireland’s VAT rate on goods, including wool products, is 23%, so it’s no small fee that really adds up along the way. Look for stores displaying signs like “Tax-Free Shopping” or “VAT Refund“. These stores are registered to participate in the tax-free shopping refund. Ask the shop if they offer VAT refund forms when purchasing products. Some stores automatically provide these forms, while others may require you to request them. Usually, there is a minimum purchase amount to qualify for VAT refunds (e.g., €30), so check with the retailer. And be sure to keep all your receipts. There are different refund providers, and often, you can’t combine these forms, so you might have to keep track of which purchases go with which provider.

Before leaving Ireland or the EU, you must get your VAT refund form stamped at customs at the airport or point of departure. Present your receipts, purchased goods, passport, and completed VAT refund form at the VAT refund desk or self-service kiosks (usually found in major international airports). It might seem like a hassle if you aren’t spending too much money, but if you’re planning on bringing home lots of expensive wool products, you might save yourself money by getting the refund.

Buy Tickets in Advance

As mentioned before, Ireland, especially in high season, can be very busy, and buying tickets in advance for popular attractions is highly recommended. Some sites, such as Newgrange or the Book of Kells exhibit at Trinity College, have limited daily admissions. Purchasing tickets in advance ensures your entry and avoids disappointment, especially for attractions that sell out quickly. We saw many people getting turned away at the Book of Kells, and at Blarney Castle, the line to buy tickets was extremely long. Pre-booking tickets allows you to skip long lines and enjoy the site more than wait. Many attractions offer discounts or special rates for online bookings, so buying tickets in advance can save you money. Additionally, package deals for multiple attractions are often available online, providing more value for your trip.

Have Tea over Coffee

I’m a coffee lover, and I start every morning with my trusty warm brew. And while I’m definitely not a coffee snob or aficionado, I did find the coffee in Ireland wasn’t the greatest. I had a few good lattes in cafes, but for the most part, in the B&Bs or even some restaurants, the coffee was never very good. But rather than complain, I opted to start drinking tea, as this is what Ireland is known for, after all!

Typically, Irish tea blends are black teas, often using a mix of Assam and Ceylon teas, giving it a robust, malty taste perfect for having with milk and sugar. Brands like Barry’s Tea and LyBarry’s are household names, with many Irish households brewing tea multiple times a day, whether for breakfast, a midday break, or just to keep warm on a cold day! I always felt so Irish drinking tea on a cold morning, looking out on the foggy green landscape stretching out in front of me!

Don’t miss the Irish Beaches!

You might be thinking that the last thing I expected to be associated with Ireland was beaches, but honestly, the beaches in Ireland are one of its greatest hidden gems! Though Ireland is known for its green countryside, its beaches are equally captivating with their wild, unspoiled beauty. From the long stretches of sand at Inch Beach in County Kerry to the sandy dune of Brittas Bay, Irish beaches offer diverse scenery for beachgoers and adventurers alike. Even if it’s too cold to swim, Irish beaches offer views of the dramatic coastlines covered in golden sands and breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Despite the cooler climate, Irish beaches are popular for activities like surfing, especially along the Wild Atlantic Way, with spots like Bundoran and Lahinch drawing surfers worldwide. Many beaches, such as Ballycastle Beach in Northern Ireland and Curracloe Beach in County Wexford, have even gained recognition for their appearances in films like Game of Thrones and Saving Private Ryan.

Grab Yourself a Spice Bag

The Irish spice bag is a beloved, relatively modern takeaway dish that has become an iconic part of Irish fast food culture. Originating in Dublin, this fusion dish combines elements of Chinese cuisine with a distinctly Irish twist. A typical spice bag consists of crispy shredded chicken (or sometimes pork), chips (fries), fried onions, and peppers, all tossed in a spicy, salty seasoning mix. The seasoning usually includes a combination of chilli powder, five-spice, garlic salt, and paprika, giving it a bold and flavorful kick. While it’s most commonly seen at Chinese takeaways across Ireland, the spice bag has developed a cult following, especially for late-night eats or casual dining. The spice bag’s appeal lies in its crunchy texture, spicy flavour, and satisfying ingredients, making it a go-to option for those seeking a quick, tasty, and filling meal. Many places offer variations, with some adding extras like curry sauce or chilli flakes, further solidifying its status as a fast food favourite in Ireland. Even some of the more upscale restaurants have started serving an upscale version of this previously budget dish, which really shows how popular the food has gotten, making it a must-eat on your next trip!
