If there’s one museum in Mexico City that captures the joyful, colourful essence of Mexican creativity, it’s the Museo de Arte Popular. Housed in a beautifully restored Art Deco building in the historic centre, this museum is dedicated to the rich traditions of Mexican folk art. From Day of the Dead altars and alebrijes to intricate textiles, ceramics, and piñatas, every gallery bursts with life, texture, and story. If I could only visit one museum in Mexico City, this would be the one. Obviously a personal choice, but I find this museum to be the most delightful, insightful and inspiring museum!

What makes this museum truly special is its celebration of everyday creativity. The pieces on display are crafted by artisans from all across Mexico, highlighting the country’s regional diversity and deep cultural roots.

National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropología)

Tucked inside Chapultepec Park, the National Museum of Anthropology is widely regarded as the crown jewel of Mexican museums. Its modernist architecture, especially the soaring concrete umbrella supported by a single pillar in the central courtyard, is an architectural marvel that sets the stage for what lies within. This museum isn’t just a collection of artifacts; it’s a cultural pilgrimage. Each gallery unfolds the story of Mexico’s Indigenous civilizations, from the Olmec to the Aztec and Maya, through masterfully curated displays of sculptures, jewellery, codices, and ceremonial relics.

The museum’s layout allows visitors to trace the evolution of pre-Hispanic societies, with detailed explanatory texts and interactive displays that provide depth and context. Frida Kahlo Museum (Museo Frida Kahlo / La Casa Azul)

Nestled in the bohemian neighbourhood of Coyoacán, the Frida Kahlo Museum, affectionately known as La Casa Azul (The Blue House), is an intimate tribute to one of Mexico’s most beloved and iconic artists. This vibrant cobalt-blue home, where Kahlo was born and later lived with Diego Rivera, retains much of the original furniture, personal items, and studio materials. The atmosphere feels personal and reverent, as though you’re walking through the pages of her diary.

The museum offers a rare glimpse into Frida’s inner world. Her colourful traditional Tehuana dresses, medical corsets, and custom-designed prosthetics reflect the physical pain and political conviction that permeated her work. Original paintings, drawings, and photographs are on display, but perhaps more powerful are the everyday artifacts that shaped her reality. Chapultepec Castle (Castillo de Chapultepec)

Perched atop a forested hill overlooking Mexico City, Chapultepec Castle is the only royal castle in North America and a breathtaking blend of imperial elegance and revolutionary history. Its shimmering, undulating exterior of 16,000 hexagonal aluminum tiles resembles a cloud or a seashell, drawing photographers and design lovers from around the world. Funded by billionaire Carlos Slim, admission is always free, making it one of the most accessible art museums in the city.

Inside, the museum houses a remarkably eclectic collection that spans centuries and continents. Highlights include European old masters like Rodin and Tintoretto, religious relics, Mexican silverware, and a surprisingly extensive selection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. Six floors spiral upwards in an airy helix, culminating in a top-floor gallery bathed in natural light. Soumaya is a treasure trove that surprises and delights, blending the grandeur of a European collection with a distinctly Mexican philanthropic vision.

Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL)

Located just steps from the bustling Zócalo, the Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL) is housed in a grand neoclassical palace that once served as the Ministry of Communications. Today, its sweeping staircases, stained-glass ceilings, and marble columns create a fittingly majestic setting for Mexico’s national collection of art from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The building itself is worth a visit, but the art within is what truly elevates the experience.

MUNAL’s galleries chart the evolution of Mexican visual culture, from colonial religious painting to the dawn of modernism. Highlights include works by José María Velasco, renowned for his epic landscapes, and Diego Rivera’s early academic paintings. Thoughtful curatorial choices highlight how Mexican artists absorbed and responded to European styles while forging a unique national identity.

Museo de Arte Moderno (Museum of Modern Art)

The Museum of Modern Art offers a thought-provoking space to explore Mexico’s 20th-century artistic innovations. The building itself, with its circular exhibition halls and incredibly peaceful sculpture garden, encourages a meditative approach to viewing art.

The permanent collection includes some of the country’s most influential artists, such as Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, and Rufino Tamayo. A highlight is the iconic “Las dos Fridas” by Frida Kahlo, though it is sometimes on loan (check in advance to avoid disappointment). Temporary exhibitions often showcase bold contemporary voices and explore themes such as identity, surrealism, and political resistance. The Museo de Arte Moderno is a must for visitors looking to go beyond the expected and engage with the avant-garde side of Mexican creativity.

Palacio de Correos de México (Postal Palace)

While technically still functioning as a post office, the Palacio de Correos museum is easily one of Mexico City’s most awe-inspiring buildings. Designed by Italian architect Adamo Boari (who also designed the Palacio de Bellas Artes), this early 20th-century masterpiece is an exuberant mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Art Nouveau styles. Inside, its grand staircase, golden balconies, and ornate metalwork feel like something out of a European opera house. And the ornate interior of Palacio de Correos de México served as visual inspiration for the Department of Family Reunions in Pixar’s Coco.

The building also contains a small postal museum that showcases antique mailboxes, stamps, and historic postal equipment. To access the most fascinating parts of the building, you’ll need to enter through the museum. Even if you’re not particularly interested in postal history, the exclusive access to its architectural treasures makes the small admission fee well worth it.

Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC)

Situated within the strikingly modern architecture of UNAM’s campus, the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) stands as one of the premier institutions for contemporary art in Latin America. Its clean lines and minimalist façade reflect the cutting-edge art held within. This isn’t a space for nostalgia; MUAC is forward-looking, intellectual, and unafraid to provoke.

Inside, the rotating exhibitions tackle pressing social and political issues, often through multimedia and experimental formats. From video installations and soundscapes to digital art and performance pieces, MUAC champions the voices of contemporary artists working at the edge of innovation. But in my opinion, the best part of making your way out to the MUAC is exploring the campus of UNAM, which is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you stroll through its wide avenues and plazas, you’ll encounter murals by Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros adorning the walls of faculty buildings, alongside monumental examples of mid-century Mexican modernist architecture. The Central Library, with its iconic mosaic mural by Juan O’Gorman, is a highlight not to be missed. This sprawling university isn’t just a place of learning; it’s a living museum, blending education, activism, art, and architecture in a uniquely Mexican expression of national pride and intellectual life.

Palacio Nacional (National Palace)

Located on the eastern side of Mexico City’s Zócalo, the Palacio Nacional is not only the seat of the federal government but also home to one of Diego Rivera’s most monumental works: The History of Mexico mural. Painted between 1929 and 1951, the mural spans the interior walls of the main stairwell and vividly narrates the sweeping saga of Mexico’s past, from Aztec cosmology and Spanish conquest to revolutionary fervour. It’s a powerful, visual storytelling experience that immerses you in Rivera’s politically charged, vividly imaginative world.

Beyond the murals, the palace itself is an architectural landmark with colonial-era courtyards, grand balconies, and historic chambers. If you’re a fan of Rivera or Mexican history, this is one of the most rewarding and underrated stops in the Historic Centre.

I am someone who truly believes in museum fatigue, and to be honest, some of my least favourite museums tend to be the ones that brag about being “the biggest” or having the “largest collection” of anything. There is simply too much to see in one space, and you can find yourself either overwhelmed or exhausted at the thought of trying to take it all in.

After years of figuring out how to survive huge museums without burning out, I’ve gotten pretty good at spotting the pieces that are the most meaningful. So, after doing a lot of research and going in with a real plan, when I finally visited the Museo Nacional de Antropología on my 2026 trip to Mexico City, I focused on finding the artifacts that really express the larger story the museum is trying to share, while also highlighting the pieces that actually stay with you long after you leave.

I think it’s best to get there early, since that’s usually when the museum feels the calmest and least crowded. Sundays are free for Mexican citizens, so the galleries tend to fill up quickly, which makes it a day you might want to skip if you prefer more space to move around.

If you know what day you’ll be visiting, my best advice is to buy tickets online, which you can get from ventadeboletosenlinea.inah.gob.mx. Although you can buy them onside, both at a vendor booth and using the electronic ticket booths, this can be slow on busy days, so it’s always advisable to buy them in advance.

How to Get to the Museo Nacional de Antropología

If you’re staying nearby in the Polanco neighbourhood, you can pretty easily walk to the museum. If you prefer to take a ride share, there is a drop-off point just off Reforma, below the stairs to the museum.

If you are taking the metro, there are two easy options. Chapultepec Station (Line 1, the pink line) is usually the simplest for first-time visitors. From here, you walk into Chapultepec Park and head west toward the museum. The walk is about 15 minutes, depending on pace. Auditorio Station (Line 7, orange line) works well if you are coming from Polanco or the west side of the city. From Auditorio, you can either walk about 15 to 20 minutes through the park.

History of Museo Nacional de Antropología

When the Museo Nacional de Antropología opened in 1964, it was never meant to be just a place to store artifacts. It was designed as a national project. A way to tell the story of Mexico through the cultures that shaped it long before modern borders existed. Architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and a team of archaeologists, anthropologists, and historians worked together to create something closer to a narrative landscape than a traditional museum. Each room was built to let a culture speak in its own context, organized by geography and time, but not ranked by importance.

After Mexican independence, and especially after the Mexican Revolution, there was a huge push to reclaim and protect Indigenous history as part of national identity. Excavations across the country, from Teotihuacan to Monte Albán to the Maya regions, began uncovering massive sculptures, tomb objects, murals, and everyday tools. Many of the most important pieces you see today were discovered during scientific excavations in the late 1800s and throughout the 20th century. Others were moved from earlier museums or government collections into this purpose-built space once it opened. Some monumental pieces, like the massive Mexica sculptures, were actually found buried under Mexico City itself during construction projects in earlier centuries and later became foundational pieces in national collections.

What I think is easy to forget when walking through the galleries is that this museum is not just about ancient history. It is also about modern Mexico deciding to preserve, study, and center Indigenous civilizations as part of its identity.

Understanding the Museum Layout

The museum is built around the central courtyard fountain, and each floor tells a completely different part of Mexico’s story. The first floor focuses on ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, with galleries organized by culture and region rather than strict timelines. This is where you see the monumental pieces most people associate with the museum, including massive stone sculptures, ritual objects, and site reconstructions connected to cultures like the Mexica, Maya, Olmec, Teotihuacan, Zapotec, and more.

Many of these ground-floor galleries also open out into their own outdoor courtyard spaces. These exterior areas often feature large stone monuments, architectural fragments, altars, and reconstructions of temple elements that would have originally stood outside in ceremonial plazas. In some sections you can see large-scale carvings that are too massive for interior display, while others recreate the feeling of standing inside an archaeological site rather than a museum room. Stepping into these outdoor spaces gives you a chance to reset between galleries, but it also helps you understand how these objects originally existed in open-air sacred landscapes, surrounded by sunlight, weather, and public ritual life rather than glass cases.

The second floor focuses on living cultures, named the ‘Ethnography Halls’, focusing on Indigenous communities in modern Mexico and how traditions have continued and evolved after colonization. The collection features a myriad of textiles and everyday objects, exploring identity, survival, and cultural continuity, and it challenges the idea that Indigenous history ended in the colonial period. It’s best to visit the second floor after you’ve finished exploring the first floor.

The Great Courtyard Umbrella Fountain

Upon entering the museum, you will walk straight out into the large, central courtyard. Standing in the centre is a massive concrete umbrella fountain. Architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez designed this structure as a symbolic bridge between ancient and modern Mexico. The column collects rainwater and distributes it naturally, without mechanical pumps, relying on gravity alone.

This design intentionally echoes the sophisticated hydraulic systems of civilizations like Teotihuacan and the Maya, who engineered aqueducts, reservoirs, and drainage networks centuries before European contact. Water was not just a resource. It was sacred. Controlled water meant political power, agricultural stability, and cosmic balance.

Standing beneath the falling water, you’re placed physically inside that idea. The museum doesn’t begin with an object. It begins with a system. Survival through knowledge of nature. Everything you see inside flows from this principle.

Begin Your Tour in the Teotihuacan Gallery (Room 4)

I think one of the best places to start your visit is the Teotihuacan Gallery, in Room 4, containing objects from AD 100 -700. The first three rooms do a good job of laying out basic anthropology and the early peopling of the Americas, which helps set the stage, but they stay fairly general and can feel a bit dry, especially since they’re packed with information right out of the gate. I would say if you’ve been to an anthropology museum before and have a general understanding of what anthropology is, you can skip the first three rooms.

The Teotihuacan Gallery is where the museum really begins to narrow in on artifacts specific to ancient Mexico, and where the deeper story of these civilizations really starts to take shape. At its height, roughly between 100 and 550 CE, Teotihuacan was one of the largest cities in the world. Not just in Mesoamerica, but in the world. Tens of thousands of people lived here, in a carefully planned city built around massive ceremonial avenues, pyramids, apartment compounds, and religious complexes. It was a colossal and well-organized city, suggesting strong political control, advanced engineering, and a shared religious system that shaped everyday life.

What makes Teotihuacan especially important is that we still do not fully know who built it. Unlike the Mexica or Maya, Teotihuacan left very little written record. Much of what we know comes from architecture, murals, and artifacts. But its influence spread across Mesoamerica. Trade networks, religious imagery, and urban planning ideas connected Teotihuacan to distant regions, which is part of why archaeologists see it as one of the foundational civilizations of ancient Mexico.

The Disc of Mictlantecuhtli

Welcoming you into Teotihuacan is the slightly disconcerting Disc of Mictlantecuhtli. At first glance, this stone skull can feel unsettling, grimacing at you with its exposed teeth and intense, almost confrontational expression. But this was never meant to be horror in the way modern culture understands it. In the Mexica belief, Mictlantecuhtli ruled Mictlan, the underworld where most souls travelled after death. He was not seen as evil, but as necessary, because death was understood not as punishment, but as a fundamental part of how existence was structured.

The circular shape of the disc matters because circular imagery in Mesoamerican art is often tied to cycles of time, movement, and the paths of celestial bodies. The disc reinforces the idea that death was part of an ongoing loop. The Mexica believed the sun itself travelled through the underworld each night before rising again. Underworld imagery was not only about endings, but about renewal and continuation.

Mictlantecuhtli imagery also appears in ritual spaces connected to sacrifice and burial. In many cases, death deities were tied to transformation rather than destruction. The body returned to the earth. The spirit moved into another realm. The gods themselves had sacrificed to create humanity, so sacrifice and death were understood as part of maintaining cosmic balance. When you look at this disc, you are looking at that agreement between humans, nature, and the divine. Life required death for the universe to remain.

Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl

Stepping into the Teotihuacan rooms, you will see at the back the overpowering structure that is the spiritual and political heart of Teotihuacan; Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl. This is a reconstruction, of course, but if you have visited the pyramids at Teotihuacan, seeing it here still matters, because it helps you understand how it would have originally looked. Teotihuacan was not originally a grey stone city like it appears today. Buildings were covered in bright pigments, creating a city full of colour. The temple would have been part of an overwhelming visual experience designed to communicate power and cosmic order. Walking into this space thousands of years ago would have felt like stepping into a living religious landscape rather than just approaching a building.

The exterior was covered with carved heads of feathered serpents, usually linked to Quetzalcoatl, alongside heads tied to rain and water symbolism associated with Tlaloc. Quetzalcoatl was one of the most important deities across Mesoamerica, often associated with creation, wind, knowledge, and the movement between the human and divine worlds. Tlaloc, on the other hand, was the powerful rain and storm god, responsible for water, fertility, and agricultural survival, making him essential to everyday life and long-term stability for these civilizations.

Quetzalcoatl appears as the feathered serpent, with a long snout and carved feather patterns that make the figure feel fluid and in motion. Tlaloc is easier to spot by his large circular goggle-like eyes and prominent fangs, giving him a heavier, more powerful appearance tied to storms and rain. Pairing these two gods together reflected the Mexica worldview, where sky, rain, fertility, and survival were deeply connected. Some researchers believe this combination symbolized political authority tied directly to control over natural forces, especially agriculture and water. In a city dependent on environmental stability, this symbolism was extremely powerful.

There is also a political dimension to this structure that often gets overlooked. Teotihuacan controlled major trade routes, especially obsidian, which helped it dominate regional economies. Monumental architecture like this temple reinforced that power. It showed organization, wealth, and religious authority all at once. The city was not just surviving. It was projecting influence across Mesoamerica.

The Atlantean Warrior of Tula

Exiting Room 4 and entering Room 5, you are stepping into the Toltec galleries (AD 700-1200), moving from cultures that feel rooted in priesthood, agriculture, and cosmic cycles into something more focused on warfare. The Atlantean warriors from Tula are probably the closest thing the Toltecs have to a defining image of their civilization. These massive stone figures originally stood on top of a pyramid temple, physically holding up the roof of the sacred structure. That alone shows how the Toltecs understood power, with war, religion, and architecture all functioning as one unified system rather than separate ideas.

Each warrior is carved wearing full ceremonial battle gear consisting of a feathered headdress, ear spools, a butterfly breastplate and weapons like the atlatl spear thrower or bundles of darts. Mexica ear spools were circular ear ornaments worn by nobles, priests, and elite warriors, and they were a clear visual marker of status, identity, and rank. They were placed through stretched earlobes and could be made from materials like gold, jade, turquoise mosaic, obsidian, or carved stone, depending on the wearer’s social position. You’ll notice ear spools on many statues and carvings throughout the museum, so it helps to understand what you’re looking at when you spot them.

Atlantean Warriors of Tula are not just any ol’ soldier; they are meant to be designed to represent idealized warriors. Almost mythological versions of real military power. The Toltecs were ruled by a military elite rather than priest-kings, which makes these sculptures feel almost like official state messaging carved in stone. Some Atlante figures are connected to the planet Venus. In Toltec belief, Venus was not just a star. It was tied to warfare cycles, time, and the movement between darkness and light. Some interpretations describe these warrior figures as manifestations of Venus itself, fighting darkness and maintaining balance in the universe.

The Sacred Ball Game Hoops

Just left of the Atlantean Warrior, you’ll see what otherwise might be missed as a simple round structure with a hole in the center. But what you’re actually standing in front of is something that once sat at the center of ritual life across Mesoamerica. The sacred ball game, known in some regions as tlachtli, was played by moving a heavy rubber ball across the court using only hips or knees. The goal was to send the ball through stone rings mounted on the side walls. And this ring here is one of the ancient hoop used to play the game. Above the stone, you’ll also see a painting depicting people playing the game.

The hoops were mounted high above the playing surface, making successful shots rare and almost miraculous. Again, here we see the image of the circle, both in the hoop and a ball, representing celestial bodies like the sun or moon moving through cosmic space. When a player successfully sent the ball through the ring, it was not just about scoring points. It was reenacting cosmic balance, the constant struggle between day and night, life and death.

There was also a more serious side tied to the game. In some cases, players, often team leaders, were sacrificed after major matches. This was not understood as punishment, but as an offering meant to help maintain cosmic balance and support fertility, rainfall, and survival. The game itself dates back to at least 1600 BCE and spread across many civilizations, which makes the hoop one of the strongest symbols of a shared Mesoamerican worldview that lasted for thousands of years. You can also see several of these hoops displayed in the exterior corridors just outside the gallery, where you can compare different sizes and regional styles.

Tula Breastplate

The Tula Breastplate is a fantastic work of art and a piece of jewellery that archaeologists found in what they call the Burnt Palace complex. Today, this piece is considered one of the best surviving examples of ceremonial warrior dress from the Toltec world. Finds like this are rare because organic materials and detailed costume pieces usually do not survive over centuries, which makes this breastplate especially valuable for understanding how elite warriors presented themselves during ritual and state ceremonies, not just in battle.

The piece was constructed using hundreds of small seashell plates carefully arranged to form a protective and decorative surface, with an additional necklace layer made from shell elements placed above it. The use of the shell was not random. Shell materials were highly valued in Mesoamerica, often associated with water, fertility, and connections to distant trade networks, since many shells had to be transported from coastal regions. When you imagine this breastplate worn during ceremonies, it would have caught light, reflected movement, and visually reinforced status, power, and sacred authority all at once.

Chac Mool

If the Atlantean Warrior represents how the Toltecs saw power, the Chac Mool statue shows you how they saw communication with the divine. At first glance, the figure looks almost relaxed, their head is reclined, knees bent, with a small bowl or disk resting on their stomach. The Chac Mool is a figure that appears across multiple Mesoamerican cultures, but they are especially tied to Toltec and later Mexica religious practice. It was seen as a ritual object where offerings were placed directly onto the bowl, creating a physical point where humans and gods could meet. They were usually placed at the entrances of temples or near sacred altars. Offerings like food, incense, blood, or sometimes even a human heart would be placed into the bowl before being symbolically passed to the gods.

Some scholars believe this pose may reflect a state between worlds, not fully human, not fully divine. It physically creates a bridge between earth and sky. When you think about how much Mesoamerican belief systems focused on balance, cycles, and layers of reality, this body position starts to feel very intentional.
Another layer that makes Chac Mool figures fascinating is how long they stayed culturally relevant. The Mexica adopted the form centuries after the Toltecs, which tells you how influential Toltec religious imagery became. Later cultures often looked back at Toltec civilization as a kind of cultural golden age. Reusing the Chac Mool form was not just copying art. It was claiming legitimacy, history, and connection to an older sacred authority.

The Jaguar Cuauhxicalli

Moving into Room 6, the Mexica (1200-1521), you’ll be greeted by the grinning faces of the Jaguar Cuauhxicalli. A cuauhxicalli was a sacred stone vessel used to hold offerings, most famously human hearts taken during sacrifice rituals. The word itself roughly translates to something like “eagle gourd,” but many surviving examples, including this one, take the form of powerful animals like jaguars. The jaguar was one of the most important sacred animals in Mesoamerica, associated with night, the underworld, warfare, and elite warrior orders.

Jaguars were apex predators; they were silent, powerful and most importantly, deadly. In the Mexica belief, they were connected to the night sun, the version of the sun that travelled through the underworld after sunset. That symbolism made the jaguar the perfect guardian figure for offerings tied to sacrifice and cosmic renewal. When hearts were placed into vessels like this, it was understood as feeding the gods and helping maintain the balance that kept the universe functioning.

From a craftsmanship perspective, these vessels also show how advanced Mexica stone carving was. The musculature, teeth, and posture are all carefully controlled. The bowl is integrated directly into the body of the animal, merging ritual function with symbolic meaning. You are not just looking at a container but a living symbol of sacred power. Objects like this would have been placed in temple settings, where they became part of large-scale ceremonies tied to state religion and political authority.

Cihuacóatl

Down the stairs, to the right of the Jaguar, you will see a series of sculptures depecting Cihuacóatl, a mother goddess who existed at the exact point where life and death meet. Cihuacóatl was connected to childbirth, warfare, and the earth itself. The Mexica thought that these were not separate forces. Birth involved blood and risk, war involved sacrifice. The earth received the dead and produced new life. And Cihuacóatl embodied all of that.

Cihuacóatl was especially tied to women who died in childbirth, who were honoured in a way that mirrored fallen warriors. The Mexica believed childbirth was a form of battle. A woman bringing life into the world was seen as fighting between life and death. If she died in that process, it was understood as a sacred sacrifice. Cihuacóatl protected these women and guided them in the afterlife. Visually, figures associated with Cihuacóatl often combine symbols of beauty, power, and death. You might see serpent imagery, heavy ritual jewelry, or skeletal facial features.

Stone of Tizoc

On the far left side of the gallery, you’ll spot an enormous round stone, sitting on a plinth. This is the Stone of Tizoc, created in the late 15th century during the reign of the Mexica ruler Tizoc. This circular basalt monument would serve as a ritual altar, political propaganda, and cosmic symbol. The sides of the stone are where the political message really comes alive. Carved in a continuous band are scenes of Mexica warriors capturing enemies from other regions. These are not chaotic battle scenes, but carefully controlled and repeated images meant to reinforce the same message of Mexica victory, capture, and dominance. In Mexica society, capturing enemies was more important than killing them in battle, because captives could be used in ritual sacrifice. That means these carvings are not just about war. They are about feeding the gods, maintaining cosmic balance, and reinforcing imperial authority at the same time.

The top surface adds another layer of meaning. The radial design feels solar, almost like movement or energy spreading outward, and at the center is a deep circular cavity. Many researchers believe this may have been used during ritual ceremonies, possibly connected to sacrifice or offerings. What matters most is that the stone physically places ritual action at the center, with empire literally carved around it. Religion, warfare, and cosmic survival were never separate ideas in the Mexica world. They were all part of the same system of responsibility between humans and the gods.

The Aztec Sun Stone

Doubtlessly, the most famous object in the museum is the Aztec Sun Stone. While it is often called the “Aztec Calendar”, that description is incorrect. The stone is better understood as a cosmological map than just a simple calendar. Created in the late 15th century during the height of the Mexica Empire, the massive circular stone represents the era the Mexica believed they were living in, known as the Fifth Sun.

At the center is the face most scholars identify as Tonatiuh, the sun deity, surrounded by symbols representing earlier worlds believed to have existed and been destroyed before the present one. The Mexica believed that the sun required nourishment through sacrifice in order to continue moving across the sky. Tonatiuh is depicted in the center of the stone, his tongue extended in the shape of a sacrificial blade, and his clawed hands are gripping human hearts. The surrounding rings include day signs, ceremonial time cycles, and symbols tied to ritual life.

The history of the Sun Stone after the fall of the Mexica Empire adds another layer of meaning. It was rediscovered in 1790 beneath what is now Mexico City’s main square during colonial construction. Many Indigenous religious objects were destroyed during this period, but the Sun Stone survived. For a time, it was even incorporated into colonial architecture, reflecting the complicated relationship between suppression and preservation of Indigenous history. Its rediscovery helped spark early efforts to preserve pre-Hispanic history and played a role in shaping the development of Mexico’s national museum system. The Sun Stone also became a symbol of Mexican identity beyond archaeology. The rediscovery of major Mexica sculptures in the late 18th century helped shift how people understood Mexico’s past, transforming Indigenous civilizations from something colonial authorities tried to erase into something central to national identity.

The Statue of Coatlicue

Just to the left of the Sun Stone, you can see the ominous figure of Coatlicue standing in front of you. The scale alone is overwhelming, towering above the visitors. Serpents twist where her head should be. A necklace of human hands and hearts hangs across her chest. Her skirt is made of intertwined snakes. Every surface feels charged with meaning. Coatlicue was not meant to be comforting. She was meant to show the full truth of existence. Creation and destruction were never separate forces in the Mexica belief. They were the same cycle, happening over and over again.

Coatlicue was the mother of the sun, moon, and stars, which immediately places her at the center of the Mexica universe. But unlike later Western ideas of a nurturing earth mother, Coatlicue is fierce, terrifying, and powerful. One surviving description describes her with a serpent-like head, a necklace of human body parts, and a skirt of serpents, all symbols tied to sacrifice, rebirth, and the movement of cosmic energy. This was not horror for shock value. It was theological storytelling in which life required death, crops required sacrifice, the sun required nourishment, and the world continued only through balance.

There is also a psychological impact that is hard to ignore in this statue. The statue forces you to confront how differently the Mexica understood existence. There was no clean separation between life and death. The earth was not gentle. It was powerful, hungry, and sacred all at once. I think this is one of the moments in the museum where you really feel the distance between modern worldviews and ancient ones.

Xochipilli, the Flower Prince

Hidden against the wall on the left side of the gallery is the emotionally provocative statue of Xochipilli. Unlike the heavy, intimidating presence of figures like Coatlicue, Xochipilli feels delicate and vulnerable. He is the Mexica god of flowers, music, dance, art, beauty, and sacred pleasure. But he is not just about celebration in a simple sense. In Mexica belief, flowers symbolized poetry, truth, and the fragile beauty of life, representing something temporary and precious that blooms, fades, and returns again, a cycle embodied by Xochipilli.

What makes this statue especially important is the detailed carvings covering its body. Researchers have identified many of these carvings as sacred plants, including species associated with altered states of consciousness. These were not recreational symbols. In ritual contexts, these plants were connected to communication with the divine, prophecy, and spiritual transformation. The statue is believed to show Xochipilli in a state of sacred ecstasy, sitting upright but leaning slightly back, as if caught in a moment between the physical and spiritual worlds. It gives the figure a feeling of intensity rather than relaxation. The posture is important because he is not seated casually, but instead appears alert, lifted, and almost vibrating with energy. In Mexica culture, music, dance, and altered consciousness were part of religion and were ways to connect with the gods and understand existence, with Xochipilli representing sacred joy rather than escape.

Feathered Headdress of Moctezuma

Few objects carry as much emotional weight, political history, and artistic brilliance as the feathered headdress often associated with Moctezuma II. The piece you see in the museum today is a replica, but even that tells an important story. The original is housed in Vienna, after being sent to Europe in the early years of Spanish contact. According to historical records, it was part of the group of gifts Moctezuma gave to Hernán Cortés when the Spaniards first arrived in 1519, and it was later transferred to the Habsburg court. 

The headdress itself is an extraordinary example of Mexica featherwork, one of the most technically advanced art forms in Mesoamerica. It was constructed using long green quetzal tail feathers arranged in a sweeping arc, mounted onto a base decorated with turquoise, gold, red beads, and leather. Featherwork was not casual decoration. It was reserved for specialists who built feather mosaics by attaching feathers to a prepared base structure, layering materials to create both durability and visual depth. Feathers were markers of rank, power, and divine association. Only the highest levels of nobility and elite warriors were allowed to wear the most luxurious feather adornments. Clothing and adornment were part of a strict visual system that reinforced social order and identity.

What makes this object especially complex today is that it sits at the center of ongoing conversations about colonial history, ownership, and cultural heritage. The original headdress has been in Europe since the early 16th century, and it remains one of the most famous contested cultural artifacts connected to Mexico. Seeing the replica in the museum can feel bittersweet. It represents artistic brilliance and cultural identity, but also the moment when two worlds collided and reshaped the future of the Americas forever.

The Jade Bat Mask of Monte Albán

Moving into Room 7, containing the Oaxaca Galleries, you’ll find one of the most intrancing pieces in the museum, in my opinion, the Jade Bat Mask from Monte Albán. The mask comes from the Zapotec culture in Oaxaca and was discovered in the elite tomb complexes connected to Monte Albán, one of the most important ancient cities in southern Mexico. Masks like this were not decorative objects. They were funerary and ritual pieces, meant to accompany elite individuals into the afterlife or to be used in ceremonies connected to death, rebirth, and transformation.

The choice of a bat is incredibly intentional. Across Mesoamerica, bats were associated with night, caves, sacrifice, and the boundary between life and death. Caves were seen as entrances to the underworld and places of creation at the same time, and bats lived in those spaces. That made them natural symbols of transition, not evil or good, but powerful creatures that moved between worlds. In Zapotec belief systems, this connected bats to ideas of regeneration, ancestry, and the journey of the soul after death.

The material matters just as much as the animal symbolism. Jade was one of the most valuable materials in ancient Mesoamerica. It was associated with life force, breath, water, and fertility. It was harder to obtain than gold and was often reserved for rulers, priests, and the highest ritual contexts.

Olmec Colossal Head

Moving to Room 8, the Gulf Coast Galleries, step outside to the garden areas where you can see the enormous Olmec Colossal Heads. The giant heads are some of the oldest and most powerful human portraits in the entire museum. Carved from massive blocks of basalt, these sculptures date roughly between 1200 and 400 BCE. Each head is believed to represent a specific ruler rather than an anonymous figure.

When you stand in front of one, it does not feel symbolic or mythological. It feels personal. Like someone important is still watching the room. Each face is individualized, with different expressions, helmet styles, and proportions. One of the most remarkable parts of these sculptures is the effort it took to create them. The basalt was quarried from mountains sometimes more than 50 kilometres away and then transported across rivers and swamps without metal tools or wheeled vehicles. Some heads weigh over 20 tons. That level of labour tells you something about Olmec society.

The helmet-like headgear has led some researchers to connect the figures to ritual ball players or warrior elites, though most interpretations still lean toward them representing rulers. The Olmec are often called the “mother culture” of Mesoamerica, not because they were the first civilization, but because many core ideas appear here early.

Mictlantecuhtli, Lord of the underworld

Also found outside in the Gulf Coast Galleries is one of the most striking and widely recognized depictions of Mictlantecuhtli, the Mexica lord of the underworld. In this replica, it shows him seated on his throne with his arms stretched outward, as if reaching toward or emerging to meet the souls entering his domain. Rather than appearing passive or distant, this posture gives the impression that the deity is actively rising to commune with the dead who arrive in his realm. The imagery reflects the Mesoamerican understanding of death not as disappearance, but as a transition into another state of existence governed by powerful forces.

The original version of this scene is a clay sculpture and is considered one of the highest artistic and symbolic achievements of the Remojadas culture, discovered at the archaeological site of El Zapotal on Mexico’s Gulf Coast. The sculpture is especially powerful because it blends skeletal imagery with posture and presence, creating something that feels both terrifying and ceremonial at the same time.

The Tomb of Pakal the Great

Head down to the basement of the Maya Galleries, in Room 9, where you literally descend into the underworld. Here, you’ll find the Tomb of Pakal the Great, one of the most important archaeological discoveries in all of Mesoamerica. It received this designation not just for what was found inside, but for what it revealed about how the Maya understood life, death, and the universe. Pakal, whose full name was K’inich Janaab Pakal, ruled the Maya city of Palenque in the 7th century and oversaw one of its greatest periods of architectural and cultural expansion. When his tomb was discovered inside the Temple of the Inscriptions in 1952, it changed how archaeologists understood Maya kingship.

The most famous part of the tomb is the massive carved stone sarcophagus lid. At first glance, it looks incredibly complex, but the imagery tells a very specific story. Pakal is shown falling or descending into the underworld, while at the same time rising along the World Tree, the sacred axis that connects the underworld, the human world, and the heavens. Around him are symbols of the cosmos, ancestors, and divine forces. Some early interpretations misunderstood the image, but research now shows it represents rebirth. Pakal is becoming part of the cosmic cycle. A king transforming into an ancestor and divine presence.

The objects buried with Pakal reinforce this idea. He was buried wearing an elaborate jade death mask, along with jade jewelry, shells, and ritual items. Jade was especially important in Maya belief because it symbolized life force, breath, and eternal renewal. Covering the dead ruler in jade was not just decoration. It was protection and transformation. It prepared him for rebirth in the afterlife and reinforced his divine status even after death. The tomb itself was built deep inside the pyramid, reinforcing the idea of returning to the earth before rising again spiritually.

By the time you leave the museum, it stops feeling like you just walked through a collection of ancient objects and starts to feel more like you moved through thousands of years of living history. Each artifact, from massive imperial monuments to delicate ritual objects, tells part of a much bigger story about how people understood time, nature, power, life, and death. The Museo Nacional de Antropología is not a place you have to see all at once, and honestly, you shouldn’t try to. If you focus on the pieces that speak the loudest and give yourself space to absorb what you are seeing, you leave with something much more valuable than rushing through the entire space, trying to see it all.

A Short History of Lucha Libre

Lucha libre translates to freestyle wrestling, and it’s a uniquely Mexican form of professional wrestling that dates back to the early 1930s.

It began when a former colonel from the Mexican Revolution invited an American wrestler to Mexico to stage exhibition matches. The sport caught on immediately. Mexican wrestlers took the foundation and turned it into something entirely their own, adding speed, aerial moves, dramatic characters, and masks that felt rooted in mythology rather than just performance.

In 1934, a character calledLa Maravilla Enmascarada was introduced to Mexican audiences. The man behind the mask was an American wrestler named Mackey, who had struggled to gain attention under his real name. And his mask changed everything. The mystery of not knowing who was underneath fascinated the crowd. He became an instant success. Other wrestlers followed. The mask turned into a symbol, under which you could become anything and anyone. Traditionally, losing a major match meant losing your mask. Being unmasked was considered the ultimate humiliation. Today, not every wrestler wears one. But the mask remains central to the mythology of the sport.

El Santo

You can’t talk about Lucha Libre without mentioning El Santo. Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta debuted as El Enmascarado de Plata, the Man in the Silver Mask. His look was simple and unmistakable with an iconic silver mask. El Santo became a national hero. In the ring, he represented justice and morality. Outside of it, he was a cultural icon who appeared in films, comics, and television. Over a career that lasted more than four decades, El Santo was never unmasked. When he died, he was buried wearing the mask he had worn his entire life.

Where to See Lucha Libre in Mexico City?

The most famous venue is Arena México, located in Colonia Doctores, just east of Roma Norte. There are also matches at Arena Coliseo, but Arena México is larger, more central, and hosts multiple shows every week. For most visitors, there’s no reason to go anywhere else.

Group Tours vs Going on Your Own

You can attend Lucha Libre independently or as part of a guided tour.

Tours cost more, but they offer a layered experience. Many include pre-show activities like mask-making, wrestler meet and greets, and background on the sport. They also handle all logistics, which can be reassuring if you’re a cautious or first-time traveller. And if you like the atmosphere of going with a big group that is definitely a plus. Prices typically range from about 55 to 100 USD.

However, going on your own is easier than it sounds! Tickets are very affordable, easy to buy online, and with Uber and Didi, rideshare apps can get you to and from Arena Mexico with ease! If you’re comfortable navigating Mexico City, independent is my preferred option.

How to Get To Arena Mexico

Arena México is centrally located. If you’re staying in Roma Norte, you can walk. Otherwise, Uber or Didi are the easiest and safest options. Rides are inexpensive, and pickup after the show is generally straightforward. One thing to keep in mind, though. The street directly in front of the arena is very narrow and turns into a bottleneck well before the first match. I always set my rideshare drop-off about a block away, then walk the rest. After the show, I do the same thing and walk a few blocks before calling a car. It saves a surprising amount of time, money, and frustration.

Public transit is also a solid option. The Cuauhtémoc Metro station is about a five-minute walk from Arena México and connects easily to other major lines across the city. A single Metro ride costs only 5 pesos, making it one of the cheapest ways to get to and from the match. Trains run frequently, even in the evening, and the walk from the station to the arena is short and well-lit. On busy match nights, the area is full of other fans and staff, which generally makes it feel active and safe, especially if you stick with the crowd and keep basic city awareness in mind. But pickpockets can work easily in busy crowds, so be sure to keep your valuables in front of you at all times.

Be sure to arrive a least 30 minutes before the match. The security check line can be pretty long, but it moves fast. But you’ll want to grab food and drinks before getting to your seat, so I always advise a little extra wiggle room for arrival.

Buying Tickets for Lucha Libre in Mexico City

Although tickets can be purchased at the box office on the day of the event, these days, buying in advance is always recommended, especially for popular nights. Tickets are available online through Ticketmaster Mexico. Prices vary by section, but expect something in the range 200-500 ($11 – $25 USD). Even as prices rise across Mexico City, Lucha Libre remains one of the most affordable ways to enjoy a night of local entertainment, without the inflated costs of tourist attractions. Lucha Libre in Mexico City isn’t a once-a-year novelty for locals. It’s a weekly ritual and a form of community gathering, which makes attending a match feel less like a performance and more like being welcomed into something shared.

Which are the Best Seats to Buy in the Arena?

Arena México isn’t huge, so there are no truly bad seats. If you can afford it, spending a little extra to sit close is worth it. Front row seats sometimes become part of the show. At every match, wrestlers will literally dive out of the ring and onto the floor and getting to see this right in front of your eyes is truly exhilarating.

Ring Verde, Naranja, Azul, and Rojo are all floor-level sections and great places to sit. Even though your ticket shows a specific seat number, when you arrive, you’ll usually be guided to your assigned row and asked to fill in from one end rather than sit in the exact numbered seat. This isn’t a mistake or a scam. It’s simply how seating is managed to keep people from constantly standing up as others arrive. Rows are short, views are similar throughout, and it makes the whole process smoother once the matches begin.

The balcony seats offer a great vantage point and are usually slightly cheaper, often by around 100 pesos. The atmosphere up here is excellent. This is where many of the most dedicated local fans tend to sit, since the lower price makes it easy to come back week after week. You may be a bit farther from the action, but the energy in the crowd more than makes up for it.

Freedom Arena Bar

On our most recent trip to Mexico City, we were hoping to catch an extra show, but all of the regular tickets were sold out. The only option left was the Freedom Bar seating area. I hadn’t experienced these seats before, so it ended up being a worthwhile splurge just to see what they were like.

The Freedom Bar is a private, box-style seating area with a full view of the ring. Tickets cost around 700 pesos, or about 40 USD. With the higher price, you get access to a buffet included with your ticket, along with private bathrooms and a dedicated waiter providing table service. There’s also a wider selection of drinks available. In the regular seating areas, beer is the only alcohol sold, but in the Freedom Bar you can order cocktails and bar rail shots, which are paid separately from the ticket price.

I’d read quite a few reviews saying the Freedom Bar buffet was underwhelming, but we actually enjoyed it. The selection included things like nachos, hot dogs, pizza, chicharrones, tacos, burritos, and some vegetarian options. It definitely isn’t gourmet food. Think basic ballpark style snacks. But it was nice to be able to graze throughout the evening.

One thing we did notice is that beer prices were slightly higher in the Freedom Bar than on the floor. Nothing shocking, but it is more expensive. The seating itself is made up of large bench-style seats, and we found them a bit awkward to get in and out of, especially compared to floor seating.

The biggest difference for us was the atmosphere. The Freedom Bar felt much more subdued than the regular sections. It’s clearly a more premium area, but that also meant fewer passionate fans around us, which took away from the overall energy. For Lucha Libre, that crowd excitement really matters. Overall, I think the Freedom Bar is fairly priced, and if it’s the only option available, it’s still a solid experience. That said, I would always recommend sitting in the regular sections of the arena if you have the choice.

What to Expect inside Arena Mexico

Before entering the arena, you’ll go through a security check. Women are usually screened by female security officers, which means a quick pat-down. Food and drinks aren’t allowed inside unless they’re medically prescribed, and if you’re carrying a water bottle, you’ll be asked to dispose of it before entering. So be sure to leave fancy, refillable bottles at home.

After security, your ticket will be scanned and an usher, known as an acomodador, will guide you to your seat. They’re easy to spot in their blue aprons. As mentioned earlier, you may be seated slightly differently from the exact number on your ticket. This is normal and helps avoid constant interruptions as people arrive. Rows are short, and views are similar throughout the section. A small tip for your usher is customary. A few pesos is perfectly fine, and locals do this as well, so don’t think you’re being scammed as a tourist. Your usher will also provide you with a program for the night, which I always find is a great free souvenir, with a list of all the wrestlers on it.

Food & Drink

Once inside the arena, you’ll pass a series of stands before reaching the seating area that sell drinks and snacks. You’ll also find vendors around the exterior of the arena, especially along the sides and toward the back. In addition to these stands, you’ll find vendors who move through the seating area selling popcorn, chips, beer, and soda. This makes it easy to get a drink or snack without leaving your seat.

If you order a beer, expect to get a double; this is standard and costs about 100 MXN. If you’re at Lucha Libre, you really can’t leave without trying a michelada. A michelada is a popular Mexican beer cocktail, usually made with a light beer mixed with fresh lime juice, salt, and hot sauce. They also serve up Many versions, which also include tomato juice or clamato. The drink is served cold in a large cup with the rim coated in chamoy and tajín, which adds a spicy, tangy kick. The flavour is savoury, spicy, and refreshing rather than sweet. It’s especially popular at sporting events and outdoor venues, which is why you’ll see it everywhere at Lucha Libre matches. One tip for you is that if you don’t drink beer, you can order a Boingo (fruit drink, usually mango or guava) that is served up michelada style with extra lime juice and a ring of hot sauce and Tajin! I don’t drink beer, but I happily crushed a few of these!

Remember, you MUST bring cash. ATMs around the arena charge HUGE fees, so be sure to bring enough cash to buy everything you need. Around 600 pesos per person is usually plenty for drinks and snacks. Food here is definitely snack-heavy, and you won’t find anything like a meal, so if you’re really hungry, grab a taco or two outside the venue from any of the street vendors. These are always very reliable as they are busy and popular spots both before and after the matches.

Buying Masks and Souvenirs

Replica masks, shirts, and posters are sold inside the arena. Quality is good, but prices are higher. If you want a better deal, and honestly WAY BETTER selection, buy your souvenirs and masks outside at the street vendors. They may not be exact replicas, but they’re perfect for getting into the spirit. Masks definitely aren’t required, but if it’s your first time and you want to lean into the fun, they add a lot to the experience. Masks will cost about $10 USD, and a T-shirt outside will run you around $20 USD.

The Matches

Lucha Matches are fast-paced and theatrical. Typically, best of three falls, with breaks between rounds for drama and crowd interaction. You’ll always see técnicos, the heroes, and rudos, the villains. The rudos taunt the crowd and bend the rules. They also tend to have the most elaborate entrances. Pins, disqualifications, and outside interference all play a role. The audience counts along. Gasps and cheers come in waves.

All throughout the night, you’ll hear the audience chanting at the wrestlers. Most chants are simple and direct. You’ll hear things like “Esto es lucha,” which means “this is wrestling,” usually shouted when a match turns chaotic or intense. Fans will chant a wrestler’s name over and over, or whistle loudly when they disapprove of something. Other common chants you’ll hear are “culero,” which loosely translates to “asshole” or “coward,” and “pendejo,” a very common insult that generally means something like “idiot” or “jerk”.

Is Lucha Libre Real?

People often ask whether Lucha Libre is “real,” especially at their first match. While the storylines and outcomes are planned, the athleticism on display is very real. The speed, strength, and high-flying moves are impressive, and seeing them live makes that obvious very quickly. Even the choreographed hits look brutal, and the physical conditioning required to perform night after night is something you can’t help but respect.

On event nights, the area around the arena is busy and well-staffed, with ushers, security, and police presence inside and outside the venue. If you’re using rideshare or public transit, arriving and leaving with the flow of the crowd helps everything feel even more straightforward and comfortable.

And although it was undoubtedly busier, with more tourists, the canals are still that jewel-of-a-day trip from Mexico City!

History

Xochimilco is often called the Venice of Mexico, a sprawling network of waterways that winds through the southern edge of Mexico City. More than 170 kilometres of canals branch out in every direction. Long before the Spanish arrived, the region’s Indigenous communities built this remarkable system both for transportation and to maintain a steady supply of water across the valley.

The name Xochimilco translates to “place of the floating gardens.” The Aztecs transformed the landscape with thousands of flowers and crops grown on chinampas, artificial agricultural islands enriched with mineral-rich soil. After the Spanish conquest, many central canals were drained to make way for new roads, but the waterways in Xochimilco survived. Today, the area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for preserving this ingenious agricultural and engineering tradition.

How to Get to Xochimilco in 2026

The easiest way, by far, is to take an Uber or Didi directly to Embarcadero Nuevo Nativitas or Embarcadero Las Flores Nativitas. From central areas like Roma, Condesa, or Centro Histórico, the drive usually takes between 45 minutes and an hour, depending on traffic. Traffic can be unpredictable, especially during peak hours, which may increase both travel time and cost. My best advice is to go either before or after rush hour. A one-way ride usually runs between 15 and 20 USD, though it can climb to around 25 USD in heavy traffic. Still a good price for a trip of that length, but worth keeping in mind.

Which Embarcaderos are the Best?

Be sure to head to Embarcadero Nuevo Nativitas or Embarcadero Las Flores Nativitas. There are many embarcaderos, or piers, scattered throughout Xochimilco, but these two are the main official ones where you’ll find fair pricing, plenty of boats, food stalls, shops and clean restrooms. They’re also the easiest for rideshare drop-off and the most reliable for first-time visitors.

If you’re taking an Uber, be aware of a common scam. As you get close, people on bikes sometimes try to stop your car and insist that Nuevo Nativitas is closed, directing you instead to a “different” pier. This is completely false. Their goal is to reroute you to an unofficial dock where the boats are fewer, prices are higher and the experience is far less regulated.

We once asked a local if he had ever followed their detour just to see what happened. He told us he had been taken to a rundown entrance with only a few aging boats. He quickly declined and continued on to Embarcadero Nuevo Nativitas, which, unsurprisingly, was open and fully operational.

Public Transit to Xochimilco

If you want to save some money, public transport is absolutely an option, but the metro and light rail combination is the easiest. Take Metro Line 2 (Blue Line) to Tasqueña, then transfer to the Tren Ligero (Light Rail), which takes you straight into Xochimilco. The trip takes about an hour, depending on connections, and costs under 10 pesos in total. From the final station, you can walk or take a quick rideshare to the main embarkation points.

Trajineras

A trajinera is the brightly coloured, flat-bottomed boat that glides along Xochimilco’s canals. Each one is pushed by a long wooden pole and steered by a rower, much like a gondolier. In the centre of the boat, you’ll find a long table with seating for about a dozen people, which makes it perfect for groups. There’s a covered roof for shade on hot days, but the open front of the boat is ideal if you want to sit in the sun.

The boats are painted in vivid colours meant to echo the flowers that once grew along the canals. Every trajinera has its own name, and spotting all the different designs is part of the fun. If you know someone local who can help, you can even arrange to have a name painted on your boat ahead of time, which is especially popular for birthdays, bachelorette parties and quinceañeras.

How Much does a Trajinera Cost in 2026?

One of the biggest changes in recent years is the standardization of pricing. Trajineras are rented by the hour, per boat, not per person. The official government rate in 2026 is roughly 750 pesos per hour. That means if you are a group, the cost gets divided and becomes very reasonable. If you are only two people, it is still worth it, just a bit more of a splurge. At Nuevo Nativitas, you pay at a ticket booth and are assigned a boat. This avoids haggling and overcharging, which can still happen at smaller or less regulated piers. Be sure to tip your boatman at the end of your ride. Most of the upfront fee goes to the owner of the boat, not the person actually guiding you through the canals. A good tip makes a real difference.

Most trajineras require a minimum of two hours, since it takes time for the rower to get the boat away from the docks and into the quieter parts of the canals. I recommend booking two or three hours. The first time we went, we only chose two hours, and by the time we reached the best parts of the route, I genuinely wished we’d stayed out longer. Food, drinks, and music are extra. Vendors float up to your boat, selling everything from quesadillas to micheladas to full mariachi performances. None of them takes cards. Cash is essential.

Organized Tours

If you prefer to have a different and far more entertaining experience in the canals, I cannot recommend a tour with Mezcalicious. The team focuses on helping travellers experience the canals through flavour, music and storytelling rather than just the usual party atmosphere.

They offer both private tours and group experiences. Joining a larger group is great if you want to meet new people and enjoy a more lively, social day on the canals. For my birthday, we chose the private tour option and ended up having the best day imaginable. They even arranged a custom-painted trajinera with “Feliz Cumpleaños” and my name across the front. Onboard, they surprised us with birthday-themed gifts and games, which made the whole ride feel thoughtful and personal.

Food

You’re welcome to bring any food and drinks you like onto the trajinera. And I would highly recommend doing this, especially if you’ve rented the boat for a three-hour journey, as it’s nice to have some snacks to enjoy. There are also plenty of vendors floating through the canals selling roasted corn, candied apples, tacos, cold beer and freshly made micheladas. Prices are super reasonable, and honestly, buying from the boats is part of the experience!

La Isla de Las Muñecas

La Isla de las Muñecas is one of the most talked-about sites in Xochimilco. You’ve probably seen it featured on Anthony Bourdain or Buzzfeed Unsolved. Many boatmen will promise to take you there, but the truth is the real island is much farther out, usually around five hours from the main pier. Along the central canal routes, you’ll see several replicas, which look just as spooky but aren’t the original site. A five-hour trajinera journey is a lot for most visitors, which is why people who genuinely want to reach the real island often hire a motorboat instead. The upside of going that far is that you start to see the quieter, untouched parts of Xochimilco: long stretches of canal with no crowds, just water, trees and open sky.

The island itself is famous for its eerie atmosphere. According to local legend, the caretaker’s young daughter drowned in the canal after losing her favourite doll. To honour her spirit, he began placing dolls around the island, first near a small altar, then all over the trees as the collection grew. Over time, the dolls weathered in the sun and rain, giving them a haunting, decayed look that only adds to the island’s dark reputation. Even if you don’t make the long journey to the real island, the replicas you’ll pass along the main canals still make for an intriguing (and slightly unsettling) sight as you float by.

Entertainment along the Canal

As soon as we pushed off into the canals, we could hear music drifting across the water. Mariachi bands travel on their own boats, moving from trajinera to trajinera. As they pass, they’ll offer to hop aboard and play a song or two, or as many as you’d like. Songs usually cost around 300 pesos each, with a discount if you request several songs. We spent a while just listening to bands playing for other boats around us, and it looked like so much fun that when one finally pulled up beside us, we absolutely couldn’t say no. And when we visited on my birthday, we were able to get the band to sing us a special birthday serenade!

Beyond the mariachis, you’ll also see smaller boats with two or three musicians playing xylophones as they drift along the water. There’s music everywhere, and it gives the canals a festive, almost electric atmosphere, even on a weekday, which our guide insisted was considered “quiet.” It’s easy to imagine how lively the canals become on weekends when the place is packed to the edges.

Artisans & Merchant Boats

As you float along the canals, you’ll also come across vendors paddling up to your boat with all kinds of souvenirs and handmade crafts. Some sell embroidered blankets, others offer flower crowns inspired by the ancient chinampa gardens. You’ll find wooden toys, traditional Mexican dolls, flower crowns, and miniature trajineras as well. It’s not the cheapest place to shop, but buying something directly from a boat on the water is such a unique experience that it almost feels like part of the ride.

Are there Bathrooms on the Xochimilco Canals?

We ate and drank as we drifted deeper into the canals, and the farther we went, the quieter everything became. About an hour from the docks, the crowds disappeared almost completely. It was just our boat, the occasional vendor selling corn or drinks and long stretches of calm water framed by lush trees and bright blue sky.

And yes, with all that eating and drinking, the question eventually comes up: what about the bathroom? It feels silly to ask, but it is important. Luckily, many of the homes along the canals have built small public restrooms at the edge of their property. Your boatman will pull up, you hop off, and you are all set. Most cost around 20 pesos, and when you need them, you will be very happy they exist. They are usually reasonably clean, but I always suggest using hand sanitizer afterward since the water is not potable.

Other things you will see along the canals include floating florists and small independent zoos where you can catch a glimpse of the wildlife that lives in these waters. Many of these spots are touristy, and we did not feel the need to stop, but it was interesting to pass by and see how many different worlds exist along the edges of the canals.

I often hear people say that Xochimilco has become too touristy, but that was not my experience at all. On my visit, I saw just as many locals as tourists. Families were celebrating birthdays, groups of friends were sharing meals, and couples were out for a quiet afternoon on the water. The canals near the docks can feel busy, but once you move past the initial cluster of boats, everything opens up. The noise fades, the scenery becomes more natural, and you suddenly understand why this place has been loved for generations. It still feels like a beautiful stretch of water to explore, full of colour and life, and drifting along remains one of the most peaceful ways to spend a day in Mexico City.

The World Cup Effect

Summer in Mexico City is always lively, but June and July 2026 will feel different. The city will host the opening match at Estadio Azteca for the World Cup, which also makes it the only stadium in the world to host the World Cup’s opening match three times. Even if you are not here for the games, you will feel the impact. Hotels and short-term rentals are already soaring during the World Cup than at any other time of year. Popular museums, restaurants and bars will be much busier than usual, especially in the weeks surrounding the opener. There will be more people in the streets, more events happening and a noticeable uptick in atmosphere and energy.

If you enjoy that kind of energy and are comfortable with higher prices, it can be an exciting time to visit. If you prefer a quieter and more affordable trip, it may be better to skip summer 2026 and plan for another season instead. If you’re visiting during the World Cup, be sure to give yourself extra time to move around the city, especially near the stadium or major fan zones.

The city has been rolling out a steady stream of upgrades ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Some projects focus on infrastructure, some on safety and movement, and others on creating more public spaces for events. The biggest work is happening at the airport. AICM has been undergoing major repairs and improvements long before June, but the World Cup pushed the timeline faster. Runways, drainage systems and passenger areas are being reinforced so the airport can handle the wave of visitors. AIFA, the newer airport, has also been expanding services and transport connections.

Even if you are not attending a match, you will feel the scale of the event in the way the city uses its streets and public spaces.

All of this adds up to a city that feels like it has been polished in small but meaningful ways. The Anthropology Museum, one of the most visited spots in the city, raised its admission prices at the start of 2026. The change is noticeable. Foreign visitors now pay around 210 pesos, which is more than double what it cost just a year earlier. Mexican citizens and residents pay a lower rate, but it has increased as well. Some visitors still enter for free, including children under thirteen, seniors with INAPAM, students, teachers and people with disabilities. Sundays also remain free for everyone, and therefore, crowds are very heavy. This price jump is part of a broader trend in CDMX. More museums and historic sites are adjusting their fees, and a few places that were once free now charge some form of admission. It is still affordable by international standards, but worth keeping in mind if you plan to visit several museums during your trip.

The Rise of Didi and Ride Share Advice

When I first visited Mexico City in 2019, Uber felt like a game-changer. Back then, taxi scams were still a common worry for travellers, and having an app that handled the route, the fare and the payment took a lot of that stress away. It made getting around the city feel simpler and far more reliable. While Uber is still widely used, there is a new app on the market that has introduced some competition, and I found it to be a much better price. And that app is Didi. Didi is a ride-hailing app that started in China and expanded across Latin America, and in CDMX, it’s usually the cheaper, faster option. The interface works almost exactly like Uber: you enter your destination, see the fare, choose your car type and pay through the app. Drivers tend to prefer it because the commission fees are lower, which is part of why wait times are often shorter.

Didi lets you choose from a few ride types depending on your budget and how fast you need to get somewhere. Express is the standard option and works for most trips. Economy is the cheapest choice and good for short rides. Taxi connects you with official city cabs at a set price. Premier offers slightly nicer cars, often used for airport travel. Flash simply sends the closest available car, which usually gives you the quickest pickup.

One thing to keep in mind in Mexico City is that most rideshare cars are small. Even if you select a larger option on Uber or Didi, you are often getting a compact sedan rather than a truly spacious vehicle. If you are travelling with big suitcases or you are a group of four with multiple bags, it can get tight fast. Vans are rare on the apps. If you have a lot of luggage, it is usually easier to order two cars instead of hoping a bigger one shows up. It saves time, avoids awkward rearranging on the curb and keeps the trip more comfortable for everyone.

Mexico City Traffic

One thing you may have already heard about Mexico City is the traffic, and honestly, it’s well earned. Studies regularly rank CDMX among the most congested cities in the world, with drivers losing hours each week to slowdowns. In a metropolitan area of more than twenty million people, the roads are almost always busy. Getting around becomes its own small craft. Once you learn the rhythm of the day and which routes to avoid at certain times, the whole experience feels a lot more manageable.

Mornings between seven and nine can be packed with commuters, but the worst stretch is usually late afternoon into early evening. Around four to seven, whole sections of the city crawl, especially anywhere near Reforma, Insurgentes, Polanco, Condesa or the major ring roads. Even short trips can double in time without warning. One good piece of advice is to plan your day so you spend long stretches within the same neighbourhood. Explore Roma one day, Condesa the next, Centro on another and finish with Polanco or Coyoacan. The city is far more enjoyable when you are not zigzagging across it during peak hours.

If you have a timed entry for a museum, a restaurant reservation or an event, it helps to leave earlier than you think you need to. Ordering a ride fifteen or twenty minutes sooner can make the difference between arriving relaxed and rushing through the door. Another option is planning your movements around these peak windows. Do your big transfers in the late morning or early afternoon, stay put in a neighbourhood during the evening rush and walk to dinner if it is close by. The city is far more pleasant on foot than in standstill traffic.

Reservations Matter More than Ever

Mexico City has firmly established itself as one of the best food cities in the world, and that reputation shows in how busy restaurants have become. Many places now book out quickly, and reservations are almost always expected. For spots like Masala y Maiz, you often have to grab a table the moment their booking window opens. I tried securing a reservation more than three months ahead and still ended up with a three o’clock lunch, but it was worth it. Even smaller neighbourhood favourites in Roma Norte, Condesa, Polanco and parts of Juárez rely heavily on reservations now. It’s no longer just the fine dining restaurants; the demand is everywhere.

My best advice to balance getting into the spots you really have your heart set on and not feeling like every hour is pre-planned and free of spontaneity is to plan one or two “anchor” meals each day, then leave everything else flexible. After all, as good as the top food spots are, those random taco stands on the streets are always some of my favourite meals and not to be missed!

Mexico City has Never Felt Safer

When I first visited in 2019, some of the older people in my life were nervous about the idea of Mexico City because they still pictured it as dangerous. I ended up feeling completely safe, and honestly safer than in many parts of the U.S. Since then, the city has continued to change, and the numbers reflect that shift. Mexico’s national homicide rate dropped significantly in 2025, reaching its lowest level in about ten years. Early 2026 data suggests the trend is continuing. That doesn’t mean the city is free of crime, but day to day, especially in popular neighbourhoods, CDMX feels more stable and secure than it has in a long time.

Police presence is consistent, not just in tourist hubs in the Historic Centre but also in Condesa parks. I felt more comfortable walking more at night in familiar neighbourhoods, something I wouldn’t have said years ago. Normal city awareness still applies; stick to lit streets, and use rideshares when it gets really late or if you’re travelling on your own.

How Much You’ll Spend in CDMX in 2026

CDMX isn’t the bargain destination it once was. Food, museums and transport are still good value, but prices rise every year. Trendy cafés now charge closer to North American prices. Cocktail bars definitely do. Another reason that you should expect to pay a little more in Mexico City than in previous years is the strengthening peso, which is great for the country, but does mean your dollar or euro won’t stretch as far as it once did. However, traditional and local street food remains affordable, which is part of why people keep returning.

Different locations around the city have started charging new admission fees, which can catch travellers off guard. The famous Palacio Postal remains one of my favourite buildings in the city, but to enter the main area, they are now charging a 50 peso admission fee; however, you do get a souvenir postcard and a tamp! This admission fee helps preserve the spaces, but it does change the experience compared to past visits.

Crowds and Timing

Tourism keeps growing in Mexico City. That means busy weekends in Centro, Coyoacán, Roma, and Condesa. Weekdays still feel manageable. Early mornings remain your best friend for museums, cafés, and markets. One of the places I noticed the biggest change in crowds was Coyoacan! The Frida Kahlo Museum brings steady crowds every single day, and weekends get especially packed as visitors fill the plazas, the Coyote Fountain area and the artisan market. The neighbourhood’s colonial streets, cafés, restaurants and food stalls add to the appeal, but those same narrow roads weren’t built for modern traffic, so congestion builds quickly.

Advance booking is now the norm. The Frida Kahlo museum frequently sells out months in advance for certain days and times, so this must be booked as soon as you pick your travel dates. And museums that used to be walk-up friendly, like Anthropology and Soumaya, now see long lines during holiday weeks. Prebook if and when you can. And if you know it’s going to be busy, arrive right at opening!

Yes, You Still Need Cash in 2026

Even with how modern Mexico City feels, cash is still a big part of daily life, and it’s something first-time visitors are often surprised by. Many restaurants, cafés and museums now accept cards without issue, but plenty of everyday spots still run on pesos only. Even with digital payments becoming more visible in cafés and restaurants, cash is still the backbone of how many locals pay for food, transport and small purchases.

You don’t need to carry large amounts, but having a mix of small bills and coins makes life smoother. It’s useful for tipping, buying street snacks, and most importantly, paying for public restrooms.

Public Restrooms in Mexico City

Public restrooms in Mexico City work a little differently than what many travellers are used to, so it helps to know the basics before you go. The main thing to expect is a small fee. Most public washrooms, in parks, markets, bus stations, metro stations and older shopping centres, charge anywhere from 5 to 10 pesos for entry. Sometimes you’ll pay a person at a small desk, other times you’ll drop coins into a tray or a turnstile.

Because the fee is so common, it’s smart to keep a handful of coins or small bills on you. Larger notes aren’t always accepted, and attendants can’t always make change. This is one of the many reasons having some cash on hand in Mexico City makes your day easier.

Inside the restroom, you may be handed a small amount of toilet paper when you pay. Other times, there will be a shared dispenser outside the stalls. It’s a good idea to bring a small pack of tissues in your bag, just in case. Soap is usually available, but not always. Hand sanitizer is helpful to carry, especially if you’re spending the day walking through markets, parks or historic centres where facilities vary in quality.

A small, respectful heads-up. If you’re someone who’s sensitive to air quality, a few simple extras can make the days feel easier. Wearing a light mask during high-pollution afternoons can take the edge off if the air feels hazy or if you’re walking along a major road. I usually keep a few in my bag, especially on long walking days. These aren’t musts, but they’re small comforts that can make a noticeable difference if you start to feel the dryness catch up with you.

Mexico City sits at roughly 2,240 metres above sea level, and even if you’re in good shape, you might feel the difference when you land. Some people notice it right away, others barely feel it, but it’s worth giving yourself a gentle first day so your body can settle in. The most common things travellers feel are a little shortness of breath when walking uphill, mild headaches, dry throat, slightly upset stomach or nausea or a general sense of being tired earlier than usual. None of this is dramatic, but it can catch people by surprise, especially if you fly in from sea level and go straight into a packed itinerary.

The easiest approach is to slow your pace on day one. Skip the big hikes, long walks or anything overly strenuous. Drink more water than you think you need; the altitude and dry air make dehydration happen faster. Eating light, simple meals helps too. Give yourself breaks throughout the day, even if you feel fine. Sit in a café, wander through a museum, or spend a little time in a shaded park. Your body adjusts more smoothly when you’re not pushing it.

When you land, you’ll go through immigration as usual, but instead of receiving a slip of paper, you’re given a printed QR code or directed to generate one digitally. This QR code acts as your proof of legal entry into the country. It contains your arrival date, your permitted length of stay and your traveller information. Even though Mexico has moved toward a digital system, you still need to keep that QR code with you for your entire trip. Think of it as the modern version of the old paper form. Airlines may ask for it when you depart, immigration may scan it, and some officials still expect travellers to have it on hand when leaving the country.

A few small tips:

• Take a photo of the QR code as soon as you receive it so you have a backup on your phone.

Tips on Visiting Templo Mayor

Hours & Admission

The Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is Closed on Mondays. Access to the Museum and Archaeological Zone costs $95 Mexican pesos per person ($5 USD). Children under 13 years of age, students, and seniors are free if they can present their current identification.

Sundays offer free admission, but be aware that this is the busiest day at the Museum, with long lines at the entrance. Currently, there is no option for easy online ticket sales for those living outside Mexico.

How to Get to the Templo Mayor

Accessing Templo Mayor is convenient and straightforward. Located in the heart of Mexico City, Templo Mayor is situated just off the Zócalo, the city’s main square, in the Historic Centre. Visitors can easily reach the site by taking the Metro to the Zócalo station (Line 2) and walking a short distance to the entrance. Additionally, there are several bus routes and taxis available, making it accessible from various parts of the city.

What to Wear / Bring

I’d recommend at least two hours, if not three, for a thorough visit. Because a section of the Museum is outside, you’ll want to dress for the weather with a good wide-brim sun hat in the summer, lots of sunscreen and bottled water. If the weather calls for rain, try to go to the museum part first, as this is indoors and head back outside once the rain has passed. Many areas of the archeological zone are rough underfoot so wear comfortable walking shoes.

History of the Templo Mayor

Construction on the Templo Mayor began in the 14th century. It was located in the center of the Aztec capital city of Tenochtitlan, now modern-day Mexico City. According to legend, the Aztecs were guided to this spot by their god, Huitzilopochtli, who instructed them to build their city, where they saw an eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake. This image is now so crucial to the Mexican people that it is depicted on the Mexican national flag.

The Templo Mayor’s design consisted of two grand pyramids dedicated to the Aztec Gods Huitzilopochtli, the god of war and the sun, and Tláloc, the god of rain and fertility. The two temples were connected by a double staircase, and the entire complex was surrounded by a large plaza. For the Mexica, the Templo Mayor held the central position in their cosmology, symbolizing the heart of the universe and making its location immutable. Consequently, whenever they sought to expand it, they constructed a new edifice atop the existing one, maintaining its core features: two chapels at the summit and a dual staircase on the main façade. This process was repeated at least seven times, meaning layers of hidden histories are inside.

The shape of the buildings in the Templo Mayor complex was divided into four quadrants, which mirrored the axis mundi of the universe. Today, nothing remains of the pyramids, but the lower-level plaza or sacred precinct and the decorations that adorned this area are what remains to explore.

Aztec Life and Culture

The Aztecs were renowned for their complex social, political, and religious systems and impressive architectural and engineering achievements. They had highly developed advanced agricultural techniques, including chinampas (floating gardens), which allowed them to sustain a large population. Their economy was based on agriculture, tribute from conquered regions, and a vibrant market system. Over the next two centuries, Tenochtitlán grew into a powerful city-state that dominated the Valley of Mexico and beyond. The Aztecs formed the Triple Alliance with the city-states of Texcoco and Tlacopan, expanding their influence through conquest and trade.

The Aztecs spoke Nahuatl, which is still spoken by around 1.5 million people in Mexico today. They used a system of pictographic writing to record historical events, religious rituals, and daily life. Codices, or illustrated manuscripts, are valuable sources of information about Aztec culture.

Aztec Religion

The Aztecs had a polytheistic religion with a pantheon of gods, each associated with different aspects of life and nature. Their religious beliefs were deeply intertwined with their cosmology, which envisioned the universe as a precarious balance of forces requiring constant appeasement through rituals and sacrifices.

One of the most striking aspects of Aztec religion was the practice of human sacrifice. This was seen as essential to appease the gods and ensure the continuity of the world. The Templo Mayor was dedicated to Huitzilopochtli and Tláloc, two important gods in the Aztec concept of atl-tlachinolli. Atl-tlachinolli, symbolizing the duality of water and fire, is central to Aztec cosmology and intricately tied to their tradition of human sacrifice. Representing the balance between life and death, creation and destruction, atl-tlachinolli underscores the belief that human blood and hearts were necessary offerings to nourish the gods and maintain cosmic order. This duality is reflected in the rituals held at the Templo Mayor, where sacrifices were made to ensure the fertility of the land, the success of military endeavours, and the overall harmony of the universe. The Mexica sought to sustain the gods and renew the cosmos through this practice.

The Fall of Tenochtitlán

After a series of battles and a devastating siege, Tenochtitlán fell to the Spanish in 1521, and the Templo Mayor’s destruction symbolized the Aztec civilization’s collapse. The Spanish built their new city on top of the ruins of Tenochtitlan, which eventually became Mexico City. Not wanting to waste precious material nearly, the Spanish tore apart the pyramids and used pieces of stone from the myriads to construct the new Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral. After tearing down the great pyramids, the rest of the Templo Mayor lay buried beneath the new city for centuries, and its existence was largely forgotten.

Archaeological Zone & Sacred Precinct

The ruins of the Templo Mayor were discovered in 1978 during electrical work near the Zócalo in Mexico City. Workers unearthed a large stone disk depicting the goddess Coyolxauhqui. This significant find led to extensive excavations by the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History, revealing the temple’s twin pyramids and numerous artifacts.

Phase IV

When you enter the Sacred Precinct, you will walk around a series of pathways that guide you around the Archeological Zone. The first area you enter is called Phase IV, constructed in AD 1469-1481 during the reign of Axayacatl, the sixth tlatoani or lord of Tenochtitlan. One of the first buildings you will see is the platform, which is all that remains of one of the two great shines. This platform is decorated with stone carvings of writhing serpents that retain some of their original painted colourings, demonstrating how vibrant these temple complexes would have been when they were first created.

Coatepantil

In addition to the undulating serpents, you can see the Coatepantil, or “wall of serpents,” where carvings of snakes’ heads protrude from the walls. Serpents are so important to the symbology of the Templo Mayor because they are connected with the mythical hill of serpents, Coatepec. According to Mexica mythology, the god Huitzilopochtli was born at Coatepec. At Coatepec, Huitzilopochtli defeated his siblings, including his sister Coyolxauhqui, who had plotted to kill their mother, Coatlicue.

Coyolxauhqui Monument

Atop this platform once stood the great carving of Coyolxauhqui. Today, you can see a recreation of the stone tablet, the original of which can be found inside the museum exhibition space. Coyolxauhqui was a significant deity in Aztec mythology. She was the moon goddess and the sister of Huitzilopochtli, the god of war and the sun. According to the myth, Coyolxauhqui led her 400 brothers, the Centzon Huitznahua (representing the stars), in a rebellion against their mother, Coatlicue. After a ball of feathers touched her, Coatlicue became miraculously pregnant with Huitzilopochtli.

Angered and ashamed by this miraculous pregnancy, Coyolxauhqui and her siblings decided to kill their mother. However, as they attacked, Huitzilopochtli sprang fully armed from his mother’s womb and defeated his siblings. He dismembered Coyolxauhqui, throwing her head into the sky to become the moon. The dismembered depiction of Coyolxauhqui on the stone illustrates her violent end and reinforces Huitzilopochtli’s power and the importance of the Templo Mayor as a site of mythological and religious significance for the Aztecs.

Frog Altar

In this area, look for a pair of frog sculptures in the middle of the shrine, where they appeared on a small altar. The frogs would originally have been painted blue, as they were associated with the water god Tlalc due to their natural connection to water and their behaviour during the rainy season, which aligns with Tlaloc’s domain. Frogs are often seen as harbingers of rain because they become more active and vocal during the rainy season, emerging in large numbers after rainfall. This natural behaviour made them symbols of water, fertility, and the life-giving properties of rain, all under Tlaloc’s purview.

Stage III

Leaning on the stairs in Stage II is a series of human-looking figures leaning against the south side of the building. Centzonhuītznāhua, also known as the “Four Hundred Southerners,” represent the stars of the southern sky and the siblings of Huitzilopochtli, the Mexica god of war and the sun. In Mexica mythology, these deities plotted to kill their mother, Coatlicue but were defeated by Huitzilopochtli at his birth, symbolizing the sun’s triumph over the stars and night. Their defeat highlights the importance of conflict and sacrifice in maintaining cosmic order and balance, key themes in Mexica’s belief.

House of Eagles / Casa de las Águilas

One of the shrines still present on the site is the House of Eagles, named after the two eagle heads that flank the exterior of the building, as well as the discovery of several Eagle night statues, men dressed in armour that resemble eagles, which can be seen inside the museum exhibition. Inside the House of Eagles, the walls are decorated with paintings depicting a procession of men, a ritual of penitence, and the rite of self-mutilation.

The House of Eagles served was a vital center for the elite Eagle and Jaguar Warriors, where they convened to deliberate on military strategies and conduct exclusive religious rites. Within its sacred confines, these warriors offered human blood before the idols of Mictlantecuhtli, the Lord of Death, in ceremonies to appease the gods and ensure their favour in battle. Additionally, the precinct was accessible to the Cuahchicqueh, or Shorn Warriors, who also played a significant role in these sacred and strategic gatherings.

Also, inside the house of the eagles, in a room, you can find a four-petaled flower carving with the image of five chalchihuites, precious stones, or jades carved atop it. Chalchihuites, or precious green stones such as jade and turquoise, held profound significance in Mexica culture, as they symbolized wealth, fertility, and divine favour. These stones were highly valued not only for their beauty but also for their symbolic meanings and spiritual associations. As symbols of wealth and high status, chalchihuites indicated prosperity and social prestige, often adorning the elite, including rulers and high-ranking warriors, in elaborate jewelry, headdresses, and ceremonial costumes.

Tzompantil Altar

Continuing to the southeast, you can look at the Tzompantil Altar or the Altar of the Skulls. Tzompantli, or skull racks, were used to exhibit the severed heads of sacrificial victims, often warriors captured in battle, as offerings to the gods. The altar itself was an imposing and macabre sight, with wooden poles and crossbeams filled with rows of skulls, each meticulously arranged to maximize visibility. This display served both religious and socio-political purposes: it was a powerful symbol of Mexica military prowess and a stark reminder of the consequences of opposing their rule.

The Tzompantli Altar was closely associated with the worship of Huitzilopochtli, the god of war and the sun, and Mictlantecuhtli, the god of death. Sacrificial rituals conducted at the Templo Mayor were believed to nourish these deities and ensure the continued prosperity and balance of the cosmos. The skulls displayed on the Tzompantli were thought to carry the life force necessary to sustain the gods and, by extension, the Mexica people. This practice underscored the Mexica belief in the cyclical nature of life and death, where the death of captives and sacrificial victims was essential for the regeneration of life and the maintenance of cosmic order.

North Red Temple

The North Red Temple to the east of the Altar of Skulls is a beautiful example of Teotihuacan-style architecture. Inside this shrine is an altar with a relief carved into the front depicting a scene of bodily scarification or self-mutilation using a ball of hay covered in agave thorns. This temple was consecrated to the god Xochipilli. Xochipilli, known as the “Flower Prince,” is a prominent deity in Mexica mythology associated with flowers, love, art, games, beauty, dance, and song. Xochipilli’s name reflects his connection to pleasure and creative expression. Xochipilli is depicted surrounded by flowers and holding objects related to art and beauty, symbolizing fertility and the natural world’s aesthetics.

Temple of Tlaloc

The oldest remnants found in the sacred precinct can be seen outside in stage II, built in 1390. These areas contain the remnants of the Temple of Tlaloc to the north and the Temple of Huitzilopochtli to the south.

Chacmool Statue

At the top center of the Tlaloc temple is a sculpture of a male figure painted in blue and red. This type of sculpture is called a chacmool. A chacmool statue is a distinctive type of Mesoamerican sculpture that features a reclining figure with its head turned to one side, and its knees drawn up. Its elbows rest on the ground, supporting a plate or a bowl on its stomach or chest. These statues are found throughout various Mesoamerican cultures, including the Mexica, Maya, and Toltec civilizations, and they served important ritualistic functions, particularly in sacrificial ceremonies.

The primary purpose of a chacmool was to act as a receptacle for offerings, which often included human hearts or blood, food, incense, and other valuable items intended for the gods. Positioned prominently in temples or other sacred spaces, the chacmool’s bowl or plate was used to hold these offerings during religious rituals. The posture of the figure, with its head turned to the side and its serene expression, suggests a state of receptiveness and submission, reinforcing its role as a conduit between the human and divine realms, a concept that was central to Mesoamerican spirituality.

The Brasero Tlaloc

One of the most impressive objects found in the sacred precinct is the Tlaloc Brazier. The polychrome statue was used in rituals to honour the god Tlaloc and ensure the provision of rain necessary for crop growth and agricultural fertility. The image of Tlaloc is wearing a headdress and a diadem of chalchihuites or precious stones and crowned in feathers.

One of the best ways to identify the god Tlaloc is by the circular and bold eye rings. The practical implications of these rituals, such as ensuring agricultural fertility, were a testament to the deep understanding and application of natural principles in Mesoamerican culture.

Temple of Huitzilopochtli

Right beside the temple of Tlaloc is the Temple of Huitzilopochtli. Huitzilopochtli was the god of war and the sun, and the Temple of Huitzilopochtli is characterized by its imposing and elaborate architecture, which reflects the importance of the deity it honours. It was a stepped pyramid, rising in several tiers, and accessed by a grand staircase leading to the summit temple. This elevated position symbolized Huitzilopochtli’s paramount role in the Mexica pantheon as the protector of the Mexica people and the bringer of the sun.

Rituals and ceremonies at the Temple of Huitzilopochtli were central to Mexica religious life. These rituals often involved human sacrifices, which were believed necessary to nourish the sun god and ensure the continuation of the world. Victims, often captured warriors, were sacrificed atop the temple, with their hearts offered to Huitzilopochtli and their bodies sometimes thrown down the steps of the pyramid. These practices were intended to demonstrate the Mexica’s devotion to Huitzilopochtli and to secure his favour in their military endeavours.

Collector de Agua

As you approach the indoor museum and exhibition areas, you will pass under the various excavated collector de agua, which were the Mexica people’s system to manage and utilize water within the temple complex. This system was essential for both practical and ceremonial purposes, reflecting the importance of water in Mexica religion and daily life. The Templo Mayor’s water collection system included channels, cisterns, and reservoirs designed to capture and store rainwater. These structures ensured a reliable water supply for the temple’s various needs, including cleansing rituals, offerings to the gods, and possibly even the daily use of priests and temple workers. The system’s design demonstrated Mexica’s advanced engineering skills and ability to create functional infrastructure that integrated seamlessly with their religious practices.

Templo Mayor Museum Exhibition Walkthrough

The Templo Mayor Museum exhibition space houses an extensive and diverse collection of artifacts providing comprehensive insight into the Mexica civilization, particularly its religious, cultural, and social practices. The Templo Mayor Museum houses an impressive collection of over 7,000 objects discovered during excavations of the Templo Mayor site in Mexico City. These artifacts include effigies, clay pots, skeletons of various animals, snail shells, coral, gold, alabaster, Mixtec figures, ceramic urns from Veracruz, masks from Guerrero, and copper rattles.

Tlaltecuhtli

When you enter the space, look down from the top of the lobby into the space below, where you can see an imposing statue of the Earth Goddess, Tlaltecuhtli. Tlaltecuhtli, often called the “Earth Lord,” is a significant deity in Mexica mythology, representing the earth and its fertility. Tlaltecuhtli is typically depicted as a monstrous figure with gaping jaws and a body covered in various creatures, symbolizing the earth’s voracious appetite for life and death. This deity is associated with both creation and destruction, embodying the earth’s power to give life through fertility and to reclaim it through death. The Mexica believed that human sacrifices were necessary to appease Tlaltecuhtli, ensuring the fertility of the land and the continuation of life. This monolith weighed almost 12 tons and was once at the foot of the Templo Mayor.

Room 1 – Historical Background

The first room inside the museum provides a historical overview of the temple’s significance, construction, and role in Mexica society. It includes a detailed model of the Templo Mayor complex, maps of the ancient city, and informative panels explaining the temple’s dual dedication to Huitzilopochtli, the god of war, and Tlaloc, the god of rain and agriculture. In addition, a collection of over 100 different offerings deposited by the Mexicas was unearthed during the excavation.

Room 2 – War and Sacrifice

This room delves into the Sacred Precinct, or the ceremonial heart of Tenochtitlan, where the Templo Mayor was located. Artifacts include ceremonial offerings to the gods to gain good favour and improve crops and victory in war. Funerary offerings such as musical instruments, knives, skulls, braziers and green stone masks are displayed throughout the room.

Room 3 – Tribute and Trade

The third room highlights the Mexica people’s economic, political, and military domination from 1430 to 1519 and the objects related to the pochtecas. The financial power of the Mexica people was primarily due to the pochtecas, who were professional merchants and traders in the Aztec Empire. They travelled long distances to procure luxury goods such as precious stones, feathers, cacao, and exotic textiles, which were highly valued by the elite. Besides their commercial activities, pochteca acted as spies and diplomats, gathering intelligence on rival states and facilitating regional communication. Their wealth and specialized knowledge afforded them a high status within the Mexica society, and they operated within organized guilds that maintained strict regulations and traditions.

Room 4 – Huitzilopochtli

In this room were found pieces related to the god Huitzilopochtli. You’ll also find a ceramic sculpture of an eagle warrior once housed inside the House of Eagles and a series of stone sculptures representing the Centrzonhuitznahua, Huitzilopochtli’s brothers. These are the same sculptures as you would have seen recreations of outside. The Centzonhuitznahua, also known as the “Four Hundred Southerners,” were stars in the southern sky and, along with their sister Coyolxauhqui, plotted to kill their mother, Coatlicue, after she became miraculously pregnant with Huitzilopochtli. However, Huitzilopochtli was born fully armed and defeated his siblings, symbolizing the sun’s triumph over the stars and the moon. This myth underscores the cosmic struggle between light and darkness in Mexica cosmology.

One of the most important pieces in this room is a stone sculpture of fire serpent, Xiuhcoatl, Huitzilopochtli’s weapon. Xiuhcoatl, which translates to “Turquoise Serpent” or “Fire Serpent,” is the weapon wielded by Huitzilopochtli. This mythical serpent is often depicted as a snake-shaped weapon, symbolizing fire and solar power.

The Old Gods

Another two gods important to Aztec culture can be found here. The old god of fire, Huehueteotle, is depicted here. Huehueteotl is a deity representing the ancient and enduring aspects of fire. Often depicted as a wizened old man carrying a brazier, Huehueteotl symbolizes the life-sustaining and transformative power of fire, crucial for warmth, cooking, and rituals. His imagery often shows him with a solemn expression, emphasizing his connection to the ancient past and the cyclical nature of time.

There is also a sculpture of Mictlantecuhtli, the god of the dead. Mictlantecuhtli was the ruler of Mictlan, the underworld. Often depicted as a skeletal figure adorned with bones and jewelry, he embodies death and the afterlife. His domain is the final destination for most souls, where the dead journey through nine levels of challenges to reach rest. Mictlantecuhtli’s imagery, with a skull face and empty eye sockets, emphasizes his association with death, darkness, and the inevitable end of life, playing a crucial role in Mexica beliefs about mortality and the afterlife.

Between rooms 4-5, you can see the original monolith of the goddess Coyolxauhqui. This carving is over 3.2 meters wide and is one of the best examples of Aztec art.

Room 5 – Tlaloc

Inside this room are all the objects gathered that represent the god of Rain, Tlaloc, and objects related to water, harvest, and fertility. Despite Mexico City being in the centre of the country, there are a surprising number of marine symbols present, such as conch shells carved from volcanic stone and fish carved from mother of pearl.

Room 6 – Flora and Fauna

In room six, you can see examples of the ecological environment unique to Mexico and Mexico City. Plants and animals were always a large part of the symbolism in art and the codices of the Aztecs, and many animals were thought to be manifestations of the gods themselves. These exhibition spaces show the viewers the kind of diversity there was in ancient Teotihuacan.

Room 7 – Agriculture

One of the most ingenious and significant innovations that propelled the Mexica people’s empire was the use of chinampas. These Mexican chinampas, a form of ancient agricultural system, transformed the shallow lakes of the Valley of Mexico into fertile lands. The creation of these ‘floating gardens’ involved piling mud and vegetation into rectangular, raised beds separated by canals, anchored by willow trees, and cultivated with maize, beans, squash, and tomatoes. This pioneering technique enabled year-round agriculture, high productivity, and efficient water management, playing a pivotal role in sustaining large urban populations like Tenochtitlan.

Throughout this room, there are also many objects associated with various gods associated with agriculture, such as Chalchiuhtlicue, Chicomecoatl, and Xipe-Totex.

Room 8 – Historical Archeology

The last room in the exhibition space details the arrival of the Spanish in 1591 and the subsequent horrific conquest in 1521. The objects inside these parts of the museum demonstrate the stark differences between the Spanish and Aztec cultures and the eventual war that would erupt between them.

Sitting down in your seats, you sip a traditional michelada, a crisp local beer smothered in chamoy sauce and dusted with spicy tajin. History

Lucha libre, which translates to “freestyle wrestling,” is a form of professional wrestling unique to Mexico. Its history dates back to the early 1930s when a former colonel of the revolution invited an American wrestler to come to Mexico. They set out to stage a series of exhibitions. The wrestling matches caught on like wildfire with the locals. And it wasn’t long before they would create their unique identity within the sport. 

La Maravilla Enmascarada

In 1934, La Maravilla Enmascarada, was intorduced to Mexico. This was American wrestler Mackey, who had previously wrestled but to little fanfare. On his return to Mexico, he wanted to introduce himself as a new persona. So Mackey donned a mask and took on a new name. The mystery of who the man under the mask was intrigued the audience, and he was an instant hit! And it wasn’t long before more wrestlers were also choosing to wear a mask. With a mask, you could be anyone or anything. It soon became a part of the sport that you had to be unmasked if you lost a match. 

Lucha Libre made a name for itself, unique from American wrestling with its colourful characters, high-flying acrobatics, and dramatic storylines. Lucha libre continued to evolve over the years, with new wrestlers and new styles emerging. Today, you’ll see that not every wrestler needs to wear a mask, but some prefer to do so for the flare it gives to their costume and appearance.

El Santo

You can’t really talk about Lucha Libre without mentioning El Santo. El Santo is one of the most iconic and legendary figures in the world of Lucha Libre. Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta, the man inside the mask, first came to the ring as “El Enmascarado de Plata” (The Man in The Silver Mask.) El Santo’s iconic outfit consisted of his striking silver mask and distinctive white and silver costume. El Santo became known throughout his career for his heroic persona, often portraying a character who fought for justice and defended the oppressed. Earning his new nickname, “El Santo,” or “the Saint.” Throughout his over four-decade-long career, El Santo was never unmasked. As he never lost a match. When he died he was even buried with the mask he wore his entire career.

Where to See Lucha Libre in Mexico City?

The Arena Mexico is the most famous venue for Lucha Libre in Mexico City. It’s located in Colonia Doctores, just east of the popular neighbourhood of Roma Norte. While there are also matches held inside the Arena Coliseo, this is a much smaller venue further outside of town. And since there are always multiple shows at Arena Mexico every week there’s no need to have to travel anywhere else.

Group Tours Vs. Independent Visits

You can make a trip to see a Lucha Libre match simply on your own, by purchasing your tickets independently or via a tour group. These tour groups are much more expensive than just buying the tickets on your own. But with the tour, you often get a much more layered experience. These tours often start hours before the show and feature everything from meet and greet with real wrestlers, mask-making workshops and general history presentations. Great to help newbies get acquainted with the sport.

But the best advantage of going with a group is you having someone with you to take care of all the logistics. This is the best choice if you’re a more cautious or new traveller. These organized tours cost anywhere from $55-100 USD. This is one of the tours we recommend.

But going on your own is really easier than you think. Plus it’s much less expensive and you can spend the money saved on treats and souvenirs from the match! Hopefully, if you want to go on your own, this guide will help you navigate your first-time experience.

How to Get To Arena Mexico

Since Arena Mexico is located in the heart of the city, getting there it is very convenient. If you are staying in Roma Norte, you can even just walk. But from the rest of the city, I recommend taking an Uber to and from. Ubers are cheap and safe, and there are lots of spots where cars can drop and pick you up. Even though there are lots of taxis around the Arena after the show, Ubers are always the most reliable and safe option.

If you’d prefer to take public transportation you can arrive and depart via the Cuauhtémoc station only 5-minutes from the Arena Mexico.

How to Get Tickets for Lucha Libre at the Arena Mexico

Tickets for Lucha Libre matches are usually available on the day of the event at the arena box office. However, purchasing tickets in advance is recommended to avoid long queues and ensuring a good seat. You can buy tickets online from Ticketmaster. Tickets range in price from $420 pesos to $180 pesos ($22 USD to $10.

Best Seats in the House

The best place to sit is close to the ring. If you want the best pictures, the seats directly opposite the ramp makes for the most dramatic compositions. But if you want to see the wrestlers close up, sitting beside the ramp is your best option! Honestly, the Arena isn’t huge, so no matter where you sit you’re bound to have a great time. But you might as well shell out a few extra dollars to get up close to the action. If you find yourself in the very front row, don’t be surprised if you become a part of the show itself!

Freedome Arena Bar

A new addition to Arena Mexico is tickets to the Freedom Bar. These tickets are located in small boxes around the stadium. These tickets claim to have the best view of the ring, but I prefer to be down on the ground. But they are more private, and you get more perspective on the entire ring. The tickets include unlimited buffet food, beer, soft drinks and non-alcoholic drinks during the show. You also get a free wrestler mask, and you might even have a guest wrestler greet you at your table. Some private bathrooms and waiters come to your table. The cost of these tickets is $999 pesos ($54 USD), but it’s a unique splurge for a very special experience. Remember: this does not include tips.

What to Expect

When you arrive at Arena Mexico, you’ll have your ticket scanned and usually, there is a security officer who gives you a quick pat down. Once inside you’ll be greeted by one of the ushers, or “acomodaor,” wearing blue aprons. They will also take scan or look at your ticket and guide you to your seat. It’s wonderful to have this kind of service, especially as a newbie who doesn’t know the arena.

When you get to the row where your seat number is located, don’t be surprised if they usher asks you to sit at the end of the row. Instead of in the exact number on your ticket. This is just how they ensure people don’t have to keep getting up to let late comers in. Don’t worry if this happens. The rows are only about 6-8 seats long so the exact number really doesn’t change your view dramatically. But it confuses us the first time it happened, so good to know what to expect

After the usher brings you to your seats, you should give them a very small tip, or “propina.” Don’t feel like you’re getting ripped off as a tourist. This is very normal and even the locals do this. It’s just a nice way to give them a little something for their efforts. Whatever change you have will suffice, it’s more of a gesture of thanks than anything.

Food & Drink

Once you’ve located your seats, it’s time to grab something to eat. Many vendors move throughout the crowd during the matches, so you can purchase food and drinks without even leaving your seat. The selection is rather small but there’s everything you need for a traditional sports snack. The vendors going around the stadium usually have chips and popcorn. And be sure to ask for one of their little packets of Valentina hot sauce if you want to amp up the flavour. They also sell beers, “cervezas,” and sodas “refrescos.“

Food Stalls

If you’re looking for something a bit more substantial you can head back to the food stalls inside the lobby. Here the selection is a bit larger with things like sweets and candies, nachos, hot dogs and even fresh “tortas,” (sandwiches.) You can also find a little larger selection of beers and drinks.

Micheladas

If you’re looking for a true Mexican specialty, head to the Micheladas stand. A michelada is a Mexican drink that combines beer, lime juice, hot sauce and tomato juice. It is served in a cup rimmed with chamoy (spicy-sweet sauce made of pickled fruit) and tajin (spice mix made of chilli peppers, lime, and salt.) This combination of spicy, savoury and sweet is a staple of Mexican cuisine and a great thing to try here at the Lucha match. If you aren’t a fan of the tomato juice (as I am not), you can instead try a Chelada instead. Its the same ingredients, just without the tomato juice.

Souvenir Masks

Also for sale in the lobby are souvenirs from the match. Everything from replica masks of the favourite wrestlers to t-shirts and posters. The quality of these products is definitely high, but if you just want to buy a mask to dress up for the match, you can find many cheaper ones at the market. Or even for sale directly outside the Arena by street vendors. These won’t be perfect replicas of the ones the wrestlers wear, but they are just as fun if you aren’t looking for the real thing. I’ve found masks for as little as $5 and it makes getting into the spirit even easier!

The Matches

Lucha Libre matches are a high-energy spectacle with colourful masks, acrobatic moves, and exciting storylines. The matches are divided into rounds, each lasting for a few minutes. There are usually three rounds in total, with a break in between each round. During these breaks is when you’ll see the drama break out. With wrestlers taunting each other and lots of action from the sidelines. Lucha Libre is a family-friendly event, and you can expect to see people of all ages cheering and shouting for their favourite wrestlers. 

In almost every match, there will be the “técnicos,” or the good guys and the “rudos,” who are the evildoers. The rudos will often taunt the técnicos and are bound to be on the receiving end of “boos” from the audience. But in my opinion, the rudos often have the most amazing costumes, props and best entrances featuring fire and flames.

The luchadors must pin their opponents to the ground for about 10 seconds to win a match. Often you’ll hear the audience counting down before the pinned wrestler gets away just at the last second. Creating lots of dramatic cries from the crowd. Other times a luchador could win if the opponent is disqualified. This can happen if they use an illegal move or by enlisting help from another team member that wasn’t supposed to be in the match. There is always something afoot ontop of the exciting moves see in the ring.

Is it all Real?

Whether professional wrestling is “real” or not is something you often hear people asking when attending their first Lucha Libre event. While the storylines and outcome of the matches are pre-determined, the absolute athleticism you see during the shows is definitely REAL! Especially in Lucha Libre, the high-flying stunts they pull are phenomenal. They left my jaw on the floor multiple times. And even the “fake” hits they take from one other look like they could really hurt. You need to be in amazing shape to participate in these performances, which is a talent that is undoubtedly something to admire.

Tips for Attending Your First Lucha Libre

1. Remember to bring cash. You’ll need it to buy food and drinks. But don’t bring any more than you think you’ll need. About 600 pesos should be enough for two alcoholic drinks a person and some snacks.
2. Remember to tip your attendant!
3. Don’t bring valuables or expensive items, as pickpocketing can be a problem in crowded areas.
4. Leave your fancy camera at home. Phones are fine, so you’ll still be able to take lots of photos with them.
5. Arrive early to avoid traffic coming into the Arena. Plus, arriving early means you can get settled with food and drink, so you don’t miss a minute of the show!
6. You cannot bring in any outside food or drink so remember to leave water bottles at home.

Attending a Lucha Libre match in Mexico City is an unforgettable experience you don’t want to miss. This show is about drama, even if you’re not a sports fan. It’s about evil vs. good and long-held grudges being fought in front of your eyes. It’s one of my favourite things to do on a night in Mexico City, and I hope you try it yourself!

#1 Start with a Walk Around La Condesa

The first thing I recommend to any first-time traveller to Mexico City is to take a walk. This helps not only acclimatize you to the altitude, but also your neighbourhood. And my #1 recommendation for the best streets to comfortably and safely wander is in La Condesa. It can be a casual stroll or an in-depth guided tour. Start the day off right by meeting the friendly locals, sampling the food, and soaking up the exemplary historic architecture. And incredible green spaces. La Condesa has become somewhat of a tourist hot spot over the years. But as such, it’s really really accessible to foreigners. While still maintaining that amazing Mexico City vibe that absolutely permeates the entire city.

#2 Museo de Arte Popular

While many guides will put the Templo Mayor and Anthrolopgoy museum in their top museum spots, for me, it has got to be the Museo de Arte Popular. The Museo de Arte Popular (Museum of Popular Art) is a cultural treasure of great importance to the Mexican people. It showcases Mexico’s vibrant folk art traditions and celebrates its people’s creativity and ingenuity.

The museum holds an extensive collection of handmade crafts and folk art. This includes textiles, pottery, glassware, wood carvings, and more, providing a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Mexico. It is a place to admire the beauty and skill of these works and serves as a center for preserving and promoting traditional Mexican arts and crafts. It is a place where visitor can come together to appreciate the unique cultural richness of Mexico. And learn about its history and traditions. 

While I also recommend the Templo Mayor and the Anthropology Museum, the vibrancy of this museum always excites me. These are objects made by everyday people that have lasted generations. And hold within them such deep symbolic value. Even in arts and crafts, you’ll learn all about the Aztec myths and gods the ancient Mexican people worshipped. And see how this history still finds its way into symbolism even today.

#3 Xochimilco

Xochimilco is a neighbourhood in Mexico City home to a system of canals and floating gardens known as the Xochimilco canals. This ancient waterway was once used for agriculture and transportation. But today serves as a popular tourist attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Locals and tourists alike gather near the embarcaderos and rent these gorgeous, brightly coloured Trajineras, or small boats. Thes boats are ferried up and down the river. The atmosphere on the canals, even on a quiet afternoon, is infectious. Laughter and the sound of mariachi bands float across the water.

The canals offer a unique perspective into the way of life in Mexico in the past. These innovative chinampas were created by the Aztecs to grow crops in the middle of a lake. While on your journey, you can buy food and drinks from local street food vendors cooking up a storm in their own floating kitchens. There is also live music and craft merchants all along the river. Although it’s about a 45 minutes journey to get here, it is well worth the effort.

#4 Bosque de Chapultepec

There is no better place to spend a lively weekend with the locals than at the Bosque de Chapultepec or Chapultepec Park. The Bosque de Chapultepec (Chapultepec Forest) is one of the largest city parks in the world. Often referred to as the “lungs of Mexico City.” The park spans over 1,700 acres and is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna.

The Bosque de Chapultepec also has a rich cultural history, as it was once a royal retreat for Aztec emperors. And later served as the official residence of Mexican presidents. The Bosque de Chapultepec symbolizes the city’s past and present. And to me, this place provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of Mexico City. It is a place where people can connect with nature, learn about Mexican culture and history, and enjoy various recreational activities.

It’s also home to several museums, including the National Museum of Anthropology, the Museum of Modern Art, and the National History Museum. But I love just coming here and exploring. Take a swan boat out on the lake, eat some street snacks, and watch the locals enjoy their city.

#5 Lucha Libre

Watching Lucha Libre, Mexico’s colourful and dynamic form of professional wrestling is a cultural experience that is not to be missed in Mexico City. Lucha Libre is a deeply ingrained part of Mexican popular culture. And has been a part of the country’s entertainment scene for over 80 years. The high-flying, acrobatic moves, elaborate costumes, and larger-than-life personalities of the luchadors (wrestlers) make for a unique and exciting spectacle. One that you have to see for yourself.

Attending a Lucha Libre match in Mexico City is an opportunity to immerse oneself in Mexican culture’s vibrant and energetic spirit. We were hesitant at first about going. Not knowing if we would understand what was happening, but we were FANS immediately after the show’s start! Joining in on the chants and screaming “boos” at the villains of the match.

I remember after our first match feeling, my face was sore from smiling and singing and screaming. It was a blast; we’ve seen a match every time we’ve been back in the city. It’s part of our tradition, and it should be one of yours too. You can join a tour group if you feel more comfortable going as a group or buy the tickets from the Arena Mexoc website.

#6 Mercado Artesanías Ciudadela

There is nowhere I’m perhaps more excited to go to every time I’m in Mexico City than the Mercado Artesanías Ciudadad. This sprawling arts market is filled with hundreds of stalls selling an array of handmade goods, including textiles, pottery, jewelry, glassware, and more. Each stall reflects Mexico’s diverse cultural heritage, with artisans coming from around the country to sell their wares.

Shopping at the market is not only an opportunity to purchase unique and beautiful handmade goods but also a way to support the local artisans and their families. The prices here are extremely fair, so there is no need to haggle. But often, if you buy more than a few things, the owner will give you a discount. I find just wandering the aisle and filling my eyes with all the incredible creations a rewarding and fulfilling experience.

#7 Casa Azul Frida Kahlo

Casa Azul Frida Kahlo, also known as the Blue House, was the birthplace and lifelong home of the renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The house sits in one of my favourite Mexico City neighbourhoods, Coyoacan. Today the house has been restored to reflect what it would have looked like when Frida lived in it with her husband, Diego Rivera.

The bright blue house vividly represents Frida’s artistic vision. It is filled with Frida’s personal belongings, including her paintings, collectables and photographs. But most precious are the iconic traditional Mexican dresses that created Frida’s look. and made her a fashion icon.

Visiting Casa Azul is a journey into Frida’s world, providing a glimpse into her art, politics, and personal life. The museum is a cultural treasure that offers a window into Mexico’s past and the history of one of its most famous artists.

#8 San Angel Arts Market

The San Angel Art Market in Mexico City is the best time to make your way out to the San Angel hillside neighbourhood. While San Angel is still one of the most vibrant yet peaceful districts throughout the week in Mexico City, on Saturdays, the art markets set the squares alight. Artisans from all over the city arrive to set up their goods at dawn. Showcasing all different art forms, from paintings to sculptures and handmade items. Best of all, the art market is for more than just tourists. But also for the locals, the pieces feel really reflective of trendy Mexican styles. Furthermore, the market provides a platform for up-and-coming artists to showcase their work and gain exposure.

A market is also a place for the community to gather and engage with the local arts scene. There is often live music performances and demonstrations by artists taking place regularly. Inside the El Bazar Sábado building on the north side of the Plaza San Jacinto you’ll find a lively food court. Here, locals and tourists all come together to eat the day away. A relaxing spot to take a break from exploring the beautiful artworks outside.

#9 Street Food

Mexico City is (in my humble opinion) the best foodie location in the world. From Michelin Star fine dining to unpretentious family-run fondas serving home-style, traditional Mexican cuisine, there is truly something for everyone. But street food is where Mexico City really shines. And street food is an integral part of the city’s culture, reflecting the country’s rich culinary heritage and diverse population. Plus, at the low price points, it’s an accessible option for almost every budget.

There is something so exciting about spotting your favourite tamales vendor coming down the road on his bike, announcing his breakfast items for sale on his portable speaker. Street food in Mexico City is incredibly diverse. From traditional Mexican dishes like tacos al pastor, elote, tortas and huaraches, there is truly something for every diet. Even vegans can find special vegan food stalls around the city. And if you’re too timid to go for a full-on meal, there are always the snack and dessert vendors to dip your toe in the waters for freshly made Mexican Street food! 

#10 Sundays on Paseo de Reforma

The Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City is more than just a roadway; it is a street filled with history and symbolism. The long, wide avenue was originally built in the 19th century to connect the city center to Chapultepec Park. The Paseo de la Reforma has since evolved into a cultural hub with iconic monuments and fantastical public spaces. But on most days, you miss many of these iconic spots since the road is packed with cars rushing about to get from one end of the city to another. But not on Sundays…

Sundays on the Paseo de Reforma feature car-free streets. The busy thoroughfare is closed to traffic, and the roadway is open only to bikes, scooters, runners and pedestrians. The once loud street, thick with car exhaust, is now filled with children playing and people chatting as they cruise along the path on their bikes. The sidewalks are replete with street food vendors and craftspeople selling their wares. It feels like a giant street party. But luckily, it happens every week, so you can almost always take part in your visit. There are many places to rent a bike or a scooter to make traversing the long roadway a breeze. And make sure to make frequent stopes along the way to take in the monuments and snacks you’ll spot along the way.

There are many more amazing things to see and do in Mexico City, but this is a great list to get you started. I feel like with this list, so many parts of what makes Mexico City such an incredible place to visit are truly highlighted. Perhaps these sights will pique your interest and start you off on the right food while planning your first trip to Mexico City.

Location

The neighbourhood of Roma Norte, also called Colonial Roma, is located south of the Paseo de la Reforma. And just below the Historic City Centre. Roma Norte’s central location makes it an ideal place for tourists. From here you can easily reach all the best spots in the city in no time!  The Colonial Roma is so large that the area has been divided into the North and South. Avenue Yucatan is the main street that separates Roma Norte and Roma Sud. Each area has developed their own distinctive character. There is also a third district called La Romita. Today, we are taking a tour of Roma Norte. Roma Norte is by far the most lively and largest neighbourhood in the area.

History

Roma was one of the first upper-class neighbourhoods built in Mexico City. And I don’t just mean built in the 20th century. In 1529, the area that now makes up Roma was granted to Hernán Cortés by the Spanish Crown. During the colonial period, the Counts of Miravalle continued to control the area. This brought in more and more wealthy Spainairds into the neighbourhood. And with them the need for lavish residences.

Eduardo Walter Orrin

But it wasn’t until the 19th century that we start to see the creation of the Roma we find today. And we have the strangest person to thank for the overall look and feel of the neighbourhood. And that is Englishman Eduardo Walter Orrin. Orrin made his wealth in the Circus of all places. The Orrin Circus arrived in Mexico City in 1872 after touring the US and South America.

The circus was a HUGE success in Latin America. It was so popular that Orrin was able to afford to build a permanent venue. The circus operated inside, what is now the Teatro Blanquita in the Centro Histórico, for over 26 years! When Eduardo Orrin finally closed the circus, he turned his eyes on real estate development. And there was no place more promising than the area just south of the historic centre…what we know today as Roma Norte!

The Creation of Roma

In the late 19th century, the wealthy elite of Mexico City were fleeing the crumbling Centro Histórico. The Centro Histórico was literally sinking into the ground and the old architecture was deteriorating rapidly. The aristocracy of Mexico City were looking for wide-open spaces in which to build their mansions. They dreamt of modern, colonial architecture. Orrin, whose circus operated in the historic centre, heard these cries. So Orrin went about purchasing land to the south.

The name “Roma” was also Orrin’s idea and came from Circo Romano (Roman Circus.) Although somewhat dissimilar to today’s circus, the Roman Circus was the inspiration for his own money-making enterprise. Even the streets around Roma were inspired by the circus. Many of the roads were named after the Mexican cities where the Orrin Circus had travelled. You’ll find Puebla, Oxaca, Colima, Córdoba, Morelia and more!

Porfirio Era

Porfirio Diaz and his government were also interested in aiding the creation of this upper-class neighbourhood. The president was enthralled with the European cities he visited on his travels. He longed to make Mexico City as impressive as those European cities he so badly envied. Diaz and his government provided rich and modern infrastructure to the new colonial. This included running water lines and sewers. Sewers were a truly modern convenience that, at the time, only was available in the Roma neighbourhood!

Roma soon became a European aristocratic enclave. Inspired by the elegant boulevards of Paris, the street in Roma were widened. And many of the main streets were installed with double rows of trees. Medians were built in the centre of the roads to provide relaxing pedestrian walkways. In the 1940s and 1950s, the area drew in the best of the best of Mexico City. Artists, businessmen and politicians arrived in style. Famous chilangos such as Álvaro Obregón, David Alfaro Siqueiros and former president Mexico Luis Echeverría all found themselves living within these “walls”. 

The Great Downfall of Roma

But in the 1950s, after WWII, the city began instituting lower rent regulations in these neighbourhoods. This act brought in more lower-class residents. The wealthier class railed against these newcomers, and many started to leave the area. More exclusive and luxurious areas like Polanco began to pop up. Drawing the remainder of the upper class out of Roma for good.

In addition to the new residents, taller buildings began to pop up around the colonial mansion. “Ruining” the look of the peaceful “town,” causing a further exodus. But the tall buildings weren’t just an eyesore; they were unknowing starting to disturb the ground below them.

This all came to a head on September 19th, 1985, at seven in the morning. An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 hit Mexico City. Thousands of buildings were levelled, and over 10,000 people lost their life. In Roma alone, 472 buildings were partially or entirely collapsed. The neighbourhood fell into complete disrepair. The population declined from 95,000 inhabitants in 1970 to 35,000 in 1995.

Reconstruction efforts were slow in these lower-class neighbourhoods. Regulations were put into place that no new apartment buildings could be constructed or older constructions adapted. This was to ensure the area remained intact until it could be repaired. But, by happy accident, this ended up preserving the remaining historic buildings for future residents and travellers.

The Renaissance of Roma

In the last 10 years, the area has started to slowly become more and more gentrified. We are witnessing the rebirth and renaissance of Colonial Roma. Low rents and beautiful architecture brought the hipsters who have started to transform the streets once more. Today the area is home to some of the cities trendiest cafes, incredible street art, awe-inducing pastries, curated cocktails and top-class restaurants.

Architecture

Porfirian Art Deco

There are two main identifiable architecture styles in Roma; Porfirian Art Deco and Colonial Revival Style. The iconic architecture of Roma is marked by the fact that the new residents rejected the traditional Mexcian Baroque architecture found in the historic centre. That iconic red tezontle stone was replaced with wrought iron, crucial for highlighting the Art Deco elements.

French and Italian influences were also incorporated with Gothic and Moorish designs. Today, this combination of design styles is called “Porfirian architecture,” named after President Porfirio Diaz. Traditional Mexican brick and ceramics were replaced with modern metal and glass. Houses in this style were constructed up until 1910. 

Colonial Revival Style

After the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), the houses and buildings took on a Neo-Colonial or Colonial Revival Style. The era after the Revolution served as the antithesis to the Porfirian. The new President Venustiano Carranza‘s government even gave out federal tax exemptions to those who built houses in the colonial-revival style. These neo-colonial houses displayed a sense of nationalism and featured plateresque elements, pinnacles and mixtilinear arches. Architects brought back traditional materials such as tezontle, cantera and Talavera tiles. As we walk along the streets, see if you can spot the various styles as we go!

Where to Stay

If you’d like to stay in Roma Norte, there are many boutique hotel options for you to explore. It might seem easy to use services like Airbnb as there are tons of low-cost options. But Airbnb has continued to cause rent inflation and rental shortages for locals. Everything we love about the area is on the verge of disappearing. Roma could easily turn into a tourist-only sector if this continues.

On the other hand, hotels create hundreds of jobs for the locals who live here. And in Roma Norte, they are some of the most beautiful hotels anywhere in the world! Many also have kitchens and family-style rooms to serve larger groups. So definitely give them a look before you go straight to Airbnb. In the end, if Airbnb is more budget-friendly for you, I totally get it. Just be sure to do your best to give as much of your time and money into the neighbourhood. To ensure you are continuing to support the hyper-local community.

Stanza $

Stanza is a great budget option just to the east of Roma Norte. It is located on the edge of the urban Pushkin Park. Despite the low price, the hotel has a great vibe and is located in a safe and quiet area. For the best rooms ask for one facing the park. The rooms are a little dated but clean and well-maintained. Perfect for those on a budget!

Ignacia $$$

Ignacia Guest House is truly one of the best secrets hidden in Roma Norte. Under the purple blossoms of the Jacaranda tree lining the streets, you will be welcomed home. The house was originally an old 20th-century mansion that has been transformed into just six elegant suites. Since there are so few rooms, everyone who stays here feels like family.

Each suite is designed differently, blending history and Mexican artisan tradition with contemporary design. In fact, Ignacia Guest House has been internationally acclaimed for its interior design, architecture, and restoration. During the day, guests can abandon their daily routine and enjoy the historical details, gardens, and spaces. They can have breakfast at the communal tables or in the garden under an orange tree in the morning. Book well in advance as the rooms are highly coveted by anyone in the know who visits Mexico City.

La Valise $$$

La Valise feels like the epitome of Mexico City living. It is a blend of luxury, comfort, style and relaxation. A little slice of heaven on the streets of La Roma. Located inside a 1920’s French-style townhouse, there are only three suites, each located on a different floor of the building. So you really feel like you have the place to yourself! Like you’re just a neighbourhood resident. Each room is uniquely decorated with Mexican antiques and one-of-a-kind interior decor. A splurge but a well-worth splurge!

What Sights to See

Plaza Río de Janeiro

One of the best places to enjoy a morning coffee and pastry is inside the stunning Plaza Río de Janeiro. Plaza Río de Janeiro (or Rio de Janeiro Square) was originally named Plaza Roma but it was renamed in 1922. Mexico was invited to attend the Brazilian centenary celebration in 1922 and wanted to pay tribute to their brotherly city. So they decided instead of building an entirely new park, they would just rename this one for them.

The columns of cacti that line the park’s edge create these wonderful architectural elements created out of the natural environment. The park’s pathways swirl and curl around the central parkette. Creating this almost mesmerizing and yet peaceful atmosphere.

Michelangelo’s David

One of the park’s most interesting features is the replica statue of Michelangelo‘s David. It stands in the centre of the park, looking over the central fountain. One might wonder why there is an Italian statue smack dab in the centre of the park dedicated to Brazil. In truth, there is no connection between the two. Simply, the city architects of the time were on a quest to turn Mexican parks into European squares. Going so far as creating these exact replicas. We will see more and more along the rest of our tour so keep an eye out!

Edificio Rio de Janeiro

On either side of the park, you’ll find some incredible examples of old colonial and art deco mansions. Their stone and wrought iron Juliet balconies looking out towards the park are draped in their own set of greenery. The most important house surrounding the park is the Edificio Rio de Janeiro. It is found on the east side of the park. Easily identifiable by the large green awning and art deco lettering that marks its entrance. While the building is today called ‘Edificio Rio de Janeiro’ years ago, the house went by a very different name.

La Casa de las Brujas  

While the lower, street-level exterior is covered in wrought iron and art deco elements, these were added in the 1930s. The original castle-inspired red-brick building was built in 1908. The house was called the La Casa de las Brujas (The Witch’s House). It was nicknamed as such due to the pointed tower located in the corner of the building. It was thought to perfectly resemble a pointed witch’s hat. But the witch symbolism doesn’t stop there! Many people thought that the windows below the “hat” resembled a human face. The (now) bricked up ovals were the yes, the lintel was the nose and the pointed balcony the mouth. To get the effect, you need to look at the house from the northwest corner. And trust me, it’s hard to miss!

Rumours began to spread that only a witch could have devised such a creation. Stories say her name was La Pachita. And she would watch people coming about their business in the park from her windows. Perhaps looking for victims or buyers of her next spell. But sadly, the truth is much more boring. The house was designed by architect Enrique Sánchez Sedeño. He was working under the Porfiriato and was influenced by European designs. He drew on elements from Gothic architecture and Viennese-style windows to create the house we see today.

Iglesia de la Sagrada Familia

On Orizaba street, you’ll find the Iglesia de la Sagrada Familia. This church sits on the corner of Puebla street. The exterior of the church is awe-inspiring, filled with rich neo-romanesque decorations. This was the first church in Colonial Roma in 1910. One of my favourite aspects of the church is the neo-Gothic rose window above the entrance. The window is surrounded by ornate stone carvings of palm leaves. The stunning Italian-made stained glass windows are also filled with organic designs of plants and flowers. As the entirety of Roma feels like a living garden, the church fits right into that blooming environment.

Casa Universitaria del Libro UNAM

Kiddie corner to the church is the Casa Universitaria del Libro UNAM, another iconic building from the history of Roma. It was built in 1920 and originally designed as an elegant residence for Joaquín Baranda MacGregor, a preeminent politician. The mansion was created by the same designer as the church. He chose for this house the art deco style so popular at the time. Today the house is iconic for its green wrought iron scalloped gates and bright green shutters. The building is a venue for various academic activities and book publications from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

If you have the chance to pop your head inside, definitely take advantage of that opportunity! The entrance features a large irregular hexagonal hall, with a central staircase leading up to a great stained glass. The stained glass features the church of San Francisco Javier in Tepotzotlan, one of the most beautiful churches in Mexico.

Fuente de Cibeles

In the center of this large roundabout along Plaza Villa de Madrid is a mammoth circular plaza featuring a dramatic fountain. The Fuente de Cibeles made a replica of the original fountain of the same name found in Madrid. The city to which the plaza is also named. The community around the plaza were primarily residents originally from Spain. They wanted to bring something to Mexico City that represented their homeland. It was designed as a symbol to link both cities in their shared brotherhood. 

The Goddess Cybele

The fountain features the goddesses Cibele. She is the mistress of wild nature, sitting in her bronze chariot. Cibele is pulled by her companions, her two pet lions. They are a male and female, representing fertility. Cibele also is the godess of protection, also symbolized in the fearsome lions. She carries an oversized key in her hand, which indicates her power over earth. In the other hand, she carries a sceptre, a symbol of her power over the seasons.

Fittingly, as Cibele represents the seasons, she is surrounded in Springtime by Mexico City’s most impressive seasonal features; the Jacaranda trees. The best time of to see the Jacaranda trees is during later March and early April. This is when they are in full bloom and create a halo of purple blossoms all around the plaza. The plaza is surrounded by some very hip cafes and restaurants. It is a great place to return to while away a lazy afternoon.

Avenida Álvaro Obregón

Many people refer to Avenida Álvaro Obregón as the “main street” in Roma Norte. The best way to explore this street is to step into the pedestrian median. Walking between the two lanes of traffic. The design of the street was meant to replicate French boulevards, which also featured central medians.

Along the median, you can stop and sit on one of the many benches. Take a moment to relax under the trees or study the sculptures found along the way. The central walkway is home to bustling art and an antique market which pops up on the weekends.

Remember Michalengo’s David we saw before? Well, the sculptures along this street are also replicas of famous Italian works of art. They feature characters from Greek and Roman mythology. There are twelve sculptures in total. The fountains include copies of Mirón‘s Discobolus, Michelangelo‘s Bacchus and the Venus de Milo.

Edificio Balmori

Edificio Balmori / Balmori Building was built in 1922 and later renovated in 1991 to restore the damage from the 1985 earthquake. The building was designed to feature an eclectic combination of historical styles. The new Colonial Roma aimed to imitate European architecture. But they went about it in their own unique ways. This resulted in the amalgamations of style we see today. Study the building for long enough and you can spot; classical, art nouveau, belle epoque, and even Art Deco decorations.

Plaza Luis Cabrera

The delightful Plaza Luis Cabrera parkette is named after politician Luis Cabrera. Cabrera was known for speaking out against the government of Álvaro Obregón. He fought to protect the rights of the lower class. The square was designed to mirror Plaza Rio de Janeiro.

Beat Writers in Roma

The park sits on the edge of Orizaba and Zacatecas Street, a popular area in the 1950s for American writers. Authors like Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg made their pilgrimage to CDMX. Some of the writers were fleeing America for what they saw as a more romanticized, foreign land. Others (Burroughs) were literally fleeing drug possession charges. Either way, they saw Mexico City as somewhere they could indulge in their vices. In the 1950s, Roma was on the decline. These ex-pats could get away living in robust colonial mansions, drinking and eating all day for very little money.

Famously, Kerouac wrote many stories of his adventures using peyote. He and Burroughs would take it together and lie in the grass in the Plaza Luis Cabrera. Regaling each other of what they saw in their hallucinations. But Roma wasn’t all champagne and roses for these writers. William Burroughs lived just off Avenida Álvaro Obregón (where we stopped for tacos). It was here in 1951 that, after one too many drinks, Burroughs’s life would change forever. He and his wife were playing with his pistol when he accidentally shot her in the head. She died on the spot. Despite being accidental, Burroughs was convicted to a two-year suspended sentence. But the trauma of the incident spurred him on to become a better writer. And perhaps the reason he is so prolific today.

Huerto Roma Verde

Continuing east along Coahuila, walk until you reach the large intersection at Avenue Yucatan.. Across the street, on the east side, you will be able to spot a bright blue column. This giant structure is made of old water jugs that form the monumental entrance to the Huerto Roma Verde. Huerto Roma Verde is a cultural centre made from recovered property once destroyed by the 1985 earthquake. The land was abandoned for 27 years and used as a dumping ground. But Paco Ayala, who initiated the project, saw the 8,000 square feet as an opportunity. He saw the space as a place for regrowth and environmental education through art.

The self-managed community found inside these walls was created by grassroots environmental activists. It began as a small shared vegetable garden. Where residents who lived in small apartments without outdoor space could come and grow their own fresh food. From there, it grew to have a storage tower to collect rainwater, a recycling centre for solid waste and even several farm animals! Their aim is to focus on sustainability and promote the development of communities that are integrated into their local environments.

Much of the space is designed to be an urban garden with mind-bending art sculptures created within the living environment. While you can wander the space and just appreciate the artworks, you can also stop into the various pop-up businesses. They sell everything from organic cosmetics, vegan desserts and fresh coffee. There is also a small amphitheatre that frequently hosts musical performances. So be sure to poke your head around to see what you can find!

Ecoducto Río Piedad 

It might sound strange to send visitors to a highway as a sight to see in Mexico City but there is something extraordinary about this particular part of the Mexico City roadway. Walking halfway across the large overpass, stop in the middle of the road. Here you’ll see a long, plant-incrusted walkway called the Ecoducto Río Piedad.

A Living Purifier

If you’ve ever travelled to New York, you’ll have heard of the high-line. A 1.45-mile-long elevated green park created on a former New York Central Railroad. Well, this is the same kind of concept here in Mexico City. This pedestrian path is surrounded on both sides by trees and aquatic plants. You’ll see people out for a run or walking their dogs. All the while meandering along atop one of the busiest highways in the city. The entire path extends from Chilpancingo metro to Monterrey Avenue with over 4,800 square meters of vegetation dotted across the path.

But the Ecoducto isn’t just a pretty pathway; it has an essential purpose. This is a recovered public space, with a system that cleans the polluted water out of the Piedad River. The water is piped in, and the living ecosystem atop the cement is fed by the water and purifies it in the process. The entire system captures 50 tons of carbon per year. And pumps out about 1% of the drainage water in Mexico City. While that might not seem like a lot, it is a step in the right direction. Hopefully, in the future, they will be able to create more of these beautiful systems that serve the environment and the community.

Mercado Medellin

Mercado Medellín, or Medellin Market, is my favourite farmer’s market in all of Mexico City. Not only is the marketplace large enough to feature everything you’d want in one place, it somehow still retains that friendly neighbourhood atmosphere. The market never feels too crowded and definitely not like it’s only there for the tourists. Shopping here makes you feel like a local and allows you to experience an authentic Mexican market.

The Mercado Medellín is easily identifiable by its red, green and yellow geometric painted exterior. Lookout on one side for a huge, decorated multicolour mural. This marketplace has stood here for over 150 years. When the market was first established, it was in the centre of an immigrant community in Mexico City. Colombians, Cubans, Brazilian, Venezuelans and even Jewish immigrants all found themselves in the middle of the city in a neighbourhood now called Roma Sur.

The immigrants would import food and goods from their home country to sell here in their new home in Mexico City. Up until the earthquake of 1985, Jewish Mexicans owned and operated the market. But after the quake, its ownership passed hands over to the Cubans, therein earning the market its nickname; “Little Havana.”

Tepeji Street

If you are a fan of cinema, you should consider heading down to Tepeji street where you’ll find #22 Tepeji. This unassuming street is home to the exterior shooting location of the house featured in the award-winning film ‘Roma‘ by Alfonso Cuaron. In addition to this famous sight, if you look right across the street, you’ll see the real-life childhood home of the director. A plaque at #22 Tepeji commemorates this house as the film’s shooting location.

Roma and Mexico City in 1970

The film ‘Roma‘ is a must-watch for anyone visiting Mexico City. It follows the life of a live-in Mixteco housekeeper of a middle-class family. The Mixtecos, are the indigenous peoples of Mexico inhabiting the region known as La Mixteca. It is Cuarón’s semi-autobiographical take on life in the Colonia Roma in the 1970s. The film’s backdrop portrays the tensions over the land that is Colonia Roma. It shows student protestors fighting for the democratization of education. These freedom fighters were also asking for control of the university budget to be handed over to the students and teachers. They wanted political freedom for workers and peasants and quality education for everyone! They also fought for greater cultural diversity but sadly, their efforts resulted in the Corpus Christi Massacre of 1971. Nearly 120 protesters were killed, among them a fourteen-year-old boy. A sad but harsh reality of Mexico City’s history.

Where to Shop

Bazar El Oro

On Saturdays and Sundays, the Bazar El Oro pops up on the corner of El Oro and Colima street. Just down the road from the Fuente de Cibeles. It’s a wonderful and eclectic neighbourhood market filled with shops set up under brightly coloured tarps. Everything from traditional quesadillas to clothing, accessories, music, and coffee is on-sale here!

El Parián 

Just past Jalapa Street, stop just inside El Parián, the art-nouveau arcade. This incredible colonial building features eye-catching art-nouveau-style windows. Framing the windows are incredibly detailed stoned carvings with charming characters encircling the building.

Stepping inside, you’ll be able to admire the newly renovated covered shopping arcade. Shops line either side of the passageway. The interior is drenched in light, thanks to the glass ceiling above your head. The new arcade features a fantastical tiled floor, art deco-style decorations and a wash of greenery. It makes you feel like shopping inside a botanical garden!

Librería Ático

A few doors down from El Parián, you’ll come to a small store piled high are thousands of books. Librería Ático is one of those bookstores that feels lived in, in the best way possible. There is a combination of cheap, used books and antique volumes over 100 years old. While you might not find a huge selection of English-language books here, I love perusing the vintage collections. I always search out vintage coffee table books filled with pictures. They make for great conversation pieces. And you can use them to help study your Spanish!

Cafebrería El Péndulo Roma

If you prefer shopping for newer books, you must make your way over to Cafebrería El Péndulo Roma. Cafebrería El Péndulo is a bookstore chain, found across Mexico City. But each store has its own unique personality. Standing three storeys tall when you walk inside, look up to see all the bookshelves towering over you. It almost feels like entering the M.C Escher version of a bookstore. Péndulo always carries a wide selection of English language books. Real plants are dotted around the shop, bringing life into every corner you step inside.

HAPPENING

HAPPENING Roma Norte is one of my absolute favourite stores in Roma Norte. I come here all the time to find super unique, chic and modern gifts and clothing. One of my favourite things to bring back from trips is beautiful art prints and this store has some of the best. They don’t feel touristy at all but present gorgeous views of my favourite parts of Mexico City. Their selection of hand-made ceramics is also incredible and so aesthetically beautiful. If you’re looking for a really beautiful gift to bring home that feels like it imbues the energy of Mexico City this is the place to come to get it!

Vintage Hoe

One of the issues I find when visiting Vintage Stores in Mexico City is that the most popular ones focus too heavily on American Fashion. And while I think that’s wonderful for the locals, who see that as something unique, I’m looking for more of a local focus on vintage. And luckily for me, I found that inside Vintage Hoe. Although they still carry lots of American Brands, I find the vibes here to be genuinely representative of Mexico City. Walking inside the door, the well-curated, colourful clothing racks feel like entering a boutique clothing store rather than a vintage shop. In addition to clothing, they also have an incredible collection of accessories that are the perfect addition to lift any simplistic outfit.

Roma Records

If you’re a music of vinyl head, you must check out Roma Records. You’ll recognize this place from down the street by the hundreds of music stickers plastered over the front of the store, creating this incredible patchwork collage of musical taste. The store is small and a touch overpriced, but their curation is one of the reasons buying records here feels really special. Visiting record stores in a new city is always a great way to see what is new or popular in town. When I came in, I first saw a rare Placebo vinyl, and I was immediately excited to flip through the rest of their collection. Definitely stop in here if you’re in town.

Librería La Moraleja

Hiding away inside the charming antique glass windows of Librería La Moraleja are some of the most precious books in the city. Librería La Moraleja specializes in rare printings and modern but independent publishers. This book store is a great place to come to support local writers and publishers, and they really feature some gorgeous cover art that you’ll be proud to feature on your shelf. If you don’t read much Spanish but want to support the store, they frequently have a great selection of art books, postcards and prints that you can still buy to help treasure trove stores like this stay in business!

Tienda Trama

Further east along Coahuila Street is the joyful interiors of Tienda Trama. This shop is cooperative, meaning that everything you find here is made by a series of different local craftspeople and designers. So even if a smaller producer couldn’t afford to open their own shop, they can still sell their products direct to the customers. You can find everything from embroideries, ceramics, hand-made contemporary arts, kids’ clothes, and beautiful jewelry. All locally made and giving back to the community.

I’m obsessed with buying mugs everywhere I travel. They feel like the perfect “souvenir” as it’s something I use every day. Pulling a mug out of the cabinet makes me so happy as I remember the travels I took to find it. A mug with one of their custom coffee blends makes the best gift to bring home! It has local flare without feeling too much like a cliche souvenir.

Where to get the Best Coffee

Le Babüin

The best place to start the day is with a good cup of coffee. Head to the southernmost part of the neighbourhood to Le Babüin cafe. This adorable coffee shop, named after the baboon in their logo, is a perfect slice of morning cheer. The staff are so friendly, and the caffeine that drips out of the espresso machines is first class. The sign above their door translates into the quote, “Everyone should believe in something. I think I’ll have another coffee.” Love it.

Qūentin Café

The first time I went to Qūentin Café was early morning. But despite the sun barely rising above the horizon, the doorway was filled with people chatting to each other in such joyful voices; I thought a party was going on! Everyone seemed to know each other and were saying their morning greetings, dogs in tow, and it seemed like the most friendly atmosphere. But in addition to this, they have some of the best cappuccinos in the entire city!

Cardinal Casa de Café

Cardinal is one of the more popular chains in Mexico City that still feels like an independent coffee shop! Their baristas are friendly and know how to make the perfect cup of coffee. My favourite is their Cardinal cortado which mixes equal amounts of expresso and warm milk. It’s the ideal wake-me-up drink to get your day started right in the morning. This location is right on the corner of a local street, and the people-watching opportunities here are fantastic!

Forte

Forte Coffee Shop has the most modern, historical and industrial vibe, all combined together. Their coffee bar is located in the center of the room, where everyone huddles together in the morning, chatting and drinking their early sunrise brew. In addition to gorgeous coffee, they also have homebaked goods, including mouth-watering pastries and some of the best homemade sourdough bread! This place is known for its incredible music selection, and I love coming here to just sit and listen to the tunes while I write in my diary.

Cucurucho Roma

Cucurucho Roma is a newer coffee shop that opened up in the southern part of the neighbourhood. But it has quickly become one of the hippest places in town! One of the reasons that drew me into this place was the charming and imaginative illustrations plastered all over the walls! These adorable characters feel like they imbue the personalities of the owners and visitors alike. They have some unique coffee blends, like their Horchata con espresso, that are lovely options for those who don’t like pure espresso.

Farmacia Internacional

Farmacia Internacional is one of those coffee shops almost hidden inside a sunken interior that once served as an actual pharmacy. Much of the original interior remains, like the old painted brick and antique tiled floor. It’s such a cool location with great coffee, and I love that it feels like a slice of preserved architectural history.

Where to Eat

Panadería Rosetta

There is no better place to start your morning in Roma Norte than at Panadería Rosetta. Panadería Rosetta is a café that combines the best of French and European traditions with Mexican ones. The café offers a daily selection of baked goods. So there is always something extra special to try depending on what day you come by. They offer both sweet and savoury bread and sandwiches, cakes, muffins and more! Everything hidden away in their little glass cases is to die for. Their baked good is so delicious that this bakery delivers their goods to dozens of cafes around town. But I like coming right to the source!

Puebla Street Food

Puebla Street is famous for being packed with street vendors. Here is my quick guide on how to sample them safely:

• Choose freshly squeezed juice over agua frescas
• Eat in the morning to ensure food hasn’t been sitting out all day.
• Always eat food that you can see is being freshly cooked.
• Eat from vendors where the chef doesn’t handle the money or wears gloves when touching it.
• Avoid uncooked vegetables and fruit that may have been washed in unfiltered water
• Choose the stands with a line – a good sign they are reputable and the food is turned over quickly.
• Sanitize your hands before eating
• Avoid salsas and crema at street food stalls. It’s hard to tell if it has been left out in the sun without refrigeration.

Orinoco

If you were hesitant to try the street tacos, the famous Orinoco Taco is the perfect place to grab lunch. This is one of the most popular taco shops in Roma Norte. Best known for their famous trompo or taco al pastor. Taco al pastor or “shepherd style” tacos are made from spit-grilled pork. The dish was created after Lebanese immigrants introduced shawarma to Mexicans. The pork is marinaded in adobada (red chile) paste and spit roasted with a large pineapple placed on top.

When it is served, it is companied by sliced onions, cilantro and the all-important roasted pineapple. Added to give it that hint of sweetness. Taco al pastor is my favourite kind of taco, and there is no visit to Mexico City without trying them. You should really try all three traditional varieties to decide which one is your favourite. Pair the meal with an agua fresca and, of course, a side of Chicharron (fried pork rinds.)

Mercado Roma

If you’d rather grab something more substantial, make a detour along Insurgentes. Walk along for about eight minutes until you reach C. Querétaro. Just a few steps from the intersection is the food paradise of the Mercado Roma. The sprawling three-story “market” is more of a food hall. There are no fruit and vegetable stands here. Instead, you’ll find upscale tapas, vegan tacos, a rooftop beer garden and boutique-style dessert stands. The aim of the market was to bring the concept of a gourmet market together with the local community. You can sit around communal tables and perhaps even make a few new friends inside. 

Por Siempre Vegana

Right across the street from the market is one of the precious few vegan taquerias in the city. Por Siempre Vegana or Forever Vegan, located along Coahuila Street, prides itself on making traditional-style Mexican tacos without the meat! Being a vegan visitor in Mexico City is definitely getting more and more accessible over the years and places like this are the reason! Even if you’re a meat-eater it’s worth checking out. It’s impressive to see the techniques and ingredients they use to create these incredible dishes.

Restaurante Rosetta

Make your way back up Orizaba to Colima Street. Colima Street is home to some of the best restaurants in the area. To end your evening in Roma Norte, make reservations at Rosetta restaurant. This incredible culinary experience is located inside an old villa whose courtyard has been restored to serve a the restaurant’s dining room. The entire place is filled with plants, making you feel as though you are dining al fresco. The ambiance is outstanding, and the dishes are ever-changing to suit the season. Locally sourced produce is reflected in the ever-changing menu. I always lean towards the chef’s inventive takes on traditional Mexican cusine. Dishes like the white mole with fermented carrots and charcoal are the perfect example of this modern take on classical dishes.

Tamales Doña Emi

If you are craving a snack, hop over to Tamales Doña Emi. If you’ve never managed to be up early in the morning to catch the street tamale vendor, this is a great place to try tamales! There are dozens of different varieties here to try. They have all the traditional fillings and some more eclectic and modern variations as well. Something for everyone.

Mercado 100

On the corner of Orizaba and C. Antonio M. Anza, just down the street, is the Mercado 100. The Mercado 100 is held every Sunday. It is one of the most unique markets you’ll find anywhere in the city. What makes the Mercado 100 so special is that they aim to be an ethical marketing alternative for organic, ecological and local producers. The market has been running for the past 8 years, and highlights over 50 producers from all over Mexico.

While there is lots of local produce for sale here, you can also buy packaged products. Everything from; honey, vanilla, sauces, chocolate, spices and more. These are wonderful things to buy to bring a slice of Mexico home with you. There are also local artisans selling their wares and handmade goods. Plus the street food, especially the vegan variety, is always incredibly fresh!

El Hidalguense

If you’re in town on Friday, Saturday or Sunday do you need to check out El Hidalguense! El Hidalguense is one of the top traditional Mexican restaurants in the entire city. The restaurant’s classic, old-world interior design makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time. And the dishes are made to bring your taste buds right back there with you. The restaurant specializes in barbacoa (barbeque) lamb tacos which send anyone drooling upon entering the restaurant.

This restaurant is only open on the weekends because the process takes all week to ensure the meat is perfectly cooked. The method of preparation dates all the way back to pre-Columbian times. They begin by digging a hole in the ground and covering it with heated stones. The stones heat the hole for an entire day before the core temperate is hot enough to cook the meat.

After this, the prepared sheep is wrapped in maguey leaves. The leaves give the meat insulation from the hot stones and flavour the meat while it cooks. The oven is then covered in the same leaves and a layer of earth. A fire is lit on top, and the meat is left to cook for around 12 hours or more. The result is incredible and a must–order from El Hidalguense. The atmosphere here is like walking into a huge family party, that has already gotten underway. Families gather to share large platters of slow-cooked meat. Even visitors like you will feel like family by the end of the meal.

Huset

If you’re looking for a place to eat under one of the most picturesque outdoor patios in the city, look no further than Huset. Huset serves up what they call “country cooking” with their unique wood-fired oven-prepared plates. Sitting outside at the communal tables, eating these elevated dishes, really feels like you’re inside a magical garden and is such a memorable place to find yourself on a warm evening. 

Lalo!

If you want to go to brunch and be guaranteed a smile, then you must visit Lalo! Lalo! is another popular brunch spot located in the Roma neighbourhood. Lalo! is the nickname of the owner and acclaimed chef Eduardo Garcia. Brunch is bustling here, so be prepared to wait a while to get a table but trust me, it’s worth it.

Painted on the cafe walls are these incredible colourful, feel-good drawings by Belgian graffiti artist Blue Warrior. They say you eat with your eyes, and being surrounded by these positive and happy-inducing images; you can’t help but eat while filled with pure joy. The most popular items on the menu are their huevos con chorizo and the Huevos fritos con salsa ranchers.

Lardo

Lardo is a beautiful brunch spot in the La Condesa neighbourhood. It’s located inside the old apartment buildings built by THE Condesa that the district is named after. I love how the restaurants are almost hidden away behind the crawling plants that cover the facade of the building. This area of town is so busy on the weekend, and the ambience outside the restaurant is just intoxicating. The menu features hip Mexican-European fusion food, which is as delicious to eat as it is mesmerizing to look at. 

Don’t leave without trying the Fried egg, chile con carne and avocado. The Mexican deconstructed version of avocado toast. My husband is obsessed with their selection of granola, and their baked granola served with red berries, and almond milk is a playful take on cereal. Reservations are recommended at this place since it’s one of the most popular spots in Condesa.

Comedor de los Milagros

To end your evening in Roma Sur, head up to the Comedor de los Milagros. The amazing communal party atmosphere inside is palpable. Comedor de los Milagros is a Latin American market, where you can try food from seven different Latin American countries. There are seven restaurant booths surrounding the wide-open room where guests dine on long, communal picnic benches. The food is representative of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Peru, Venezuela and Mexico. Peruvian ceviche, Argentinian steak, and even a slew of vegan options as well can all be found inside!

The upper balcony is covered in wall murals and living plants to give the vibe of being outside! It’s the most lively place to be at night, but on the weekend, be prepared to wait in line as it’s one of the hottest places in town. But well worth the effort to get inside!

Where to Find the Best Desserts

Helados Cometa

In my opinion, no meal (especially dinner) is complete without dessert! Head next door to Helados Cometa for some of the best ice creams in the entire city! Everything here is made from scratch. Unlike other shops in the city with an overwhelming menu, their selection is small but flawless. Ensuring every bite is made to perfection. Even their cones are handmade and have an added element of salt which wonderfully complements the sweet cream! Try the honey and pistachio, or rose and pistachio (pretty much anything with pistachio!)

Where to Get a Drink

Casa Prunes

Just south of Cafebrería El Péndulo is the Casa Prunes. The Casa Prunes is hidden away on historic Chihuahua street. Despite its rather obscure location, it is one of the best remaining examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Roma. True art-nouveau has all but disappeared. Save for this location. It is indeed a rare bird. The architects were inspired by the natural forms of the prune tree. You can see the arching branches and even bunches of prunes hanging off the stone window carvings.

Despite its artistic impact, the house was left abandoned for years. Only recently has it been renovated. You can now step inside and enjoy a drink in this chic cocktail bar.

Gin Gin Álvaro Obregón

For those who don’t want the night to end, or like me, want to poke their heads into every building, you can safely bar hop along with the Avenida Álvaro Obregón. Gin Gin Álvaro Obregón is my favourite bar, thanks for their out-of-this-world, skeletal decor! Their cocktail menu is IMMENSE and highlights (as is the name of the bar infers) gin! As the night wears on, a DJ will sometimes play live music. While this can get very loud, if that’s your vibe, you’ll really enjoy yourself.

Licorería Limantour

Licorería Limantour is one of the most popular bars in Mexico City. It just made it onto the World’s Best Bars list at #6! One of the reasons it has made such an impact is its menu. It combines the trendiest cocktails with tried and true recipes that stand the test of time. I sampled so many drinks with flavour combinations I never imagined, but they tasted like perfection! Licorería Limantour’s locations are suberbly decorated with elegant interiors that match the friendly vibe of the place. Reservations are recommended as this place is one of the most popular spots in the city!

Café de Nadie

I’m not going to lie; when walking by this bar, I glanced at the drinks menu and immediately walked straight based on the names of the drinks. With names like “Standing Next to Me,” “My Mistakes were made for you,” and “The Meeting Place,” I was entranced by the originality. Little did I know, this bar is known for its incredible music! The nights often feature amazing DJs spinning vintage vinyl records combined with some trendiest music in town. This is the place to come if you want to learn more about the laid-back music scene in Mexico City.

Where to Find the Best Museums

Looking to find a way to spend the rest of your afternoon? Consider a visit to one of Roma’s many museums.

MODO Museo del Objeto

My favourite museum in Roma Norte is the MODO Museo del Objeto. I love to study vintage packaging, advertising, and graphic deisgn. These items and practical objects, dating as far back as 1810, tell a rich story about the culture and communities they served. The museum started as one man’s personal collection and today contains over 30,000 items. Bruno Newman is a researcher looking into the history of design and communications. This museum is a wonderful chance for him to share his finding with the rest of us!

Casa Lamm Culture Center

Casa Lamm is now a fantastic gallery and cultural center. But when it was first built in 1911, it served as an aristocratic residence. Although the family never got around to living in it. The mansion was designed to be emblematic of the Euro-Mexican style. Encompassing as many European design elements as possible. But Casa Lamm manages to do it elegantly where all the ornaments somehow feel cohesive.

After changing hands several times, the house was transformed and saved from utter ruin in 1993. It was turned into the Casa Lamm Culture Center. The centre set out to serve and educate the community in academic and artistic endeavours. Today, students can receive their BA, Master or Doctorates in Art History, Museum Management, Art Curatorship and Creative Writing.

But the public can enter the centre to explore various public areas. There is the fantastic Liberia Pegaso bookstore. Here you can find some incredible books on the art and architecture of Mexico City. You can also explore their various galleries featuring a rotating list of contemporary artists. You can also explore their gorgeous garden filled with exemplary sculptures from famous and up-and-coming Mexican artists.

Galleria OMR

If you’re into contemporary, avant-garde art, you should make a point to visit the OMR Gallery. The OMR prides itself on representing emerging and established contemporary artists. Many of these artists are instrumental in the development of Mexico City’s contemporary art scene. The gallery is located inside an industrial-style building, perfect for featuring these contemporary works of art. The space blends together the indoors and outdoors. Allowing the artworks to pour out into the courtyard to best serve the artistic experience.

Lulu Gallery

If indie movies aren’t your thing, head over to the western edge of Roma Sur. Here you can pop your head into the fresh exhibitions at Lulu Gallery. Lulu is an independent, Mexico City-based art project space. The gallery specializes in artworks created out of interesting materials and forms. While some galleries feature work that tends to be more about the message than form, this gallery flips that concept on its head. What you’re left with are some really really cool works of art that draw you in and yet don’t ask too much of your brain. Which I always think is a great way to approach art.

And while there are plenty of other hotels in the area, Casa Decu is truly such a wonderful place at a surprisingly reasonable price! This kind of boutique hotel is a sparkling diamond that will make your entire trip all the more of a relaxing retreat.

Location

Casa Decu is located in the upscale and tourist-friendly neighbourhood of La Condesa, just steps from Avenida Amsterdam. I have lots of different guides all about La Condesa as it is my absolute favourite barrio in Mexico City. La Condesa is safe, historic, has a fantastic coffee and cafe culture and incredible restaurants hidden around every leaf-covered corner. This is the perfect place to stay for anyone who is visiting the city for the first time.

The Vision

Casa Decu‘s philosophy is to create spaces where guests can easily enjoy long-term stays. This means an array of amenities to make it, so you almost don’t want to leave! Even if you’re only in town for a few days, you still have access to these extras. This includes a kitchenette, sofa and dining area in even the smallest and lowest-priced rooms. They believe these additions allows travellers to feel more like a local than just a tourist. And it totally works. While I love the idea of Airbnb, I’ve had so many problems in the past and even ethically it’s not the greatest option to help develop the economy of the place you’re visiting. That’s why options like Casa Decu are great as they feel like staying inside a home but with the comfort of a hotel experience.

Rooms & Suites

Casa Decu only has 27 rooms, so they are technically classified as a boutique hotel. They offer four different options for your stay. The cheapest is the Executive Room with a double bed, separate bathroom and kitchenette. The Junior Suite is slightly larger and features a queen or double bed with a separate bathroom and Living room. The Superior Suite is double the size of the Junior, so you can really feel like you can spread out, but it has the same amenities. The largest option is the Duplex Suite which actually contains a joint with a second bedroom with two independent bathrooms! The largest rooms on the first floor even have a small, enclosed terrace, but these rooms are first come, first serve, and you cannot guarantee one.

My Room

I booked the Executive Room but was upgraded upon arrival to a Junior Suite upon arrival. The great thing about small hotels is they have a little more control over the experience so you will frequently get upgraded if they have the space. The addition of the kitchenette was one of the main reasons I booked the hotel. I adore having a small kitchen since I always buy SO many drinks and love having them kept cool to enjoy when I get back to the hotel after a hotel day. Nothing is better when you get home after a long day than to kick off your shoes and relax for the night with a refreshing local beverage.

My room looked out over the inner courtyard. I was concerned this might be noisy but at night it was totally silent. And I loved sitting at the dinner table watching people come and go. It was like looking out over onto a quiet side street. The bed was lush and comfy and there was lots of space to hang and store my clothes.

Bathroom

The bathroom is very simplistic and some might say a little overly so. I love a bath, so anytime I don’t have that option I’m a bit bummed. But bathtubs are SUPER rare to find in Mexico City so I’ve become used to very rarely finding one. The sink is located outside the separate shower and toilet stall which is bonus if you need to brush your teeth while someone is in the shower. Despite the shower room being so plain and rustic, the water pressure was amazing and I didn’t have any issues with the temperature.

Pet-Friendly

The hotel is divided into two halves, with one area dedicated to medium and small-breed pets! I didn’t hear any noise from the dogs but I sure did have a good time petting those good girls and boys when I ran into them in the morning.

Design

The hotel is located inside a renovated Art Deco apartment building. The original structure dates back to the late 1930s but obviously, the interior has been up hauled for the modern era. But the designers kept so many of the amazing vintage elements that make the building feel like a piece of history. Mexico City, and especially La Condesa, is home to some very unique art deco buildings so getting to stay inside one of them is really special. There is not a corner of the building that doesn’t feel like a great spot for a photo-op!

Rooftop & Breakfast

Although an included breakfast is never that important to me (as I prefer heading right out onto the town to seek out a new coffee shop) I was blown away by the gorgeous rooftop terrace. Up here is where you found the included Continental breakfast every morning. The provided breakfast itself is very basic, but you could order additional dishes at an additional cost extra. That being said, most coffee shops in the area open later than I usually prefer so it was SUPER convenient to be able to wake up and have a coffee on the terrace.

While simple, the breakfast options were great and there was something for everyone. From toast and cereal to fresh fruit, hot pastries and yogurt it was a nice spread to get something in your stomach before heading out for your day. And if you want to save some money having an included breakfast in your hotel stay means you don’t need to spend anything additional in the morning.

The rooftop terrace is actually open 24/7, so you can grab your own snacks and head up here to enjoy some downtime in a semi-private space any time during the day.

Gym

There is a gym right beside the breakfast bar, but as someone who never works out on vacation, I didn’t use it. I saw some people using the gym while I was up on the terrace relaxing, and the machines were new and looked very spiffy.

Overall Review

Overall, I LOVED staying at the Casa Decu. When I booked the hotel, it was because I was staying in Mexico City as a sool traveller and just looking for a cheap hotel to stay at. And I was blown away by how gorgeous this place was! My husband dropped in quickly to see the room, as he was on his way out of town and was devastated he didn’t get the chance to stay here with me! So we literally CANNOT wait to come back to experience the place together. The kindness of the staff is also worth mentioning as they were so helpful to both me and everyone I saw interact with the front desk. I really hope you add this to your list of places to check out next time you’re booking a trip to Mexico City!
