Who Was Gustave Moreau?

Born in Paris in 1826, Gustave Moreau was a pivotal figure in the Symbolist movement. Raised in a cultured household, his father an architect, his mother a musician, Moreau’s childhood was embedded with classical literature and the visual arts. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts, he developed a distinctive style that fused biblical, mythological, and literary themes with intricate details and jewel-toned palettes. His work, often described as dreamlike and esoteric, influenced a generation of artists, including Henri Matisse and Georges Rouault.

Symbolist Style

Gustave Moreau’s art style is best described as Symbolist, though his work transcends easy categorization. At its heart, Symbolism was a reaction against realism and naturalism, aiming instead to express the intangible: dreams, emotions, spiritual truths, and the mysteries of myth and religion. Moreau embodied this movement with an almost obsessive intensity.

His paintings are lush, fantastical, and densely layered with allegorical meaning. You’ll often find figures from Greek, Biblical, or literary sources, Orpheus, Salome, Oedipus, and others, placed in otherworldly settings teeming with jewel-toned detail. Rather than narrate myths straightforwardly, Moreau reimagines them through his own psychological and spiritual lens. His compositions are ornate and sometimes deliberately ambiguous, filled with intricate patterns, golden halos, and surreal architecture that blurs the line between the divine and the dreamlike.

A Museum Born from a Vision

In 1895, Moreau began converting his family home at 14 Rue de La Rochefoucauld into a museum dedicated to his life’s work. He meticulously designed the space to showcase his paintings, drawings, and personal artifacts, ensuring that future generations could experience his art in its intended context. Upon his death in 1898, he bequeathed the house and its contents to the French state, stipulating that the collection remain intact.

Ground Floor: Cabinet de Réception

Your journey begins on the ground floor, and you enter the various rooms which have been transformed into the Cabinet de Réception, or reception room. Each of the six rooms serves as a modern cabinet of curiosities. But rather than the walls being lined with shelves holding collections of strange, rare, and wondrous objects, the rooms are stacked with over 400 paintings, hundreds of drawings, and an exceptional collection of watercolours.

The paintings spanning his entire career, from dramatic works like Lady Macbeth, inspired by Shakespeare, to more experimental pieces like a delicate, almost abstract Bathsheba. So by now, you might be thinking, how on earth can only six rooms hold so many paintings? Well, the answer is that there are hidden cupboards, pivoting display panels, and even doorways that open to reveal more paintings inside. It’s like discovering a secret archive within the museum walls.

Moreau’s Chimeras

One of the most recurring figures in Moreau’s work is the chimera, a creature reimagined far beyond its classical origins. Rather than the traditional lion-goat-serpent hybrid, Moreau’s chimeras often have the hindquarters of a horse and broad, shadowy wings, combining elements from various animals into something fantastical and wholly his own. In French, the word chimère also suggests an unattainable dream or illusion, adding another layer of meaning. Moreau often used these beings to symbolize woman as the embodiment of unconscious desire and the magnetic pull of the unknown. In Les Chimères, the women aren’t passive muses but active participants in their own fantasies and illusions. Through his layered symbolism and exquisite detail, Moreau invites us to reflect on the dualities at the heart of human experience: beauty and danger, illusion and truth, desire and destruction.

First Floor; The Sentimental Museum

The Study & Reception Room

After taking in the treasures of the ground floor, make your way upstairs to discover the rooms preserved just as they were when Gustave Moreau lived here, his former apartment, frozen in time. The study or library is a testament to Moreau’s intellectual pursuits. Lined with bookshelves filled with volumes on art, mythology, and literature, the room also houses a substantial desk where the artist would have engaged in reading and writing. Personal artifacts, including sketches and correspondence, are displayed, offering a deeper understanding of Moreau’s scholarly interests and artistic inspirations.

A standout is the glass case with brass doors, home to ancient ceramics and two striking kraters from the tomb of an Apulian princess, part of a collection once owned by his father, Louis. Scattered among these are small bronzes, plaster casts, and intaglio reproductions that Moreau often referenced in his work. The adjoining library shelves are stacked with 16th- and 17th-century architectural treatises, Vitruvius, Serlio, Vignola, many from his architect father’s collection. One highlight is a beautifully illustrated 1836 edition of Flaxman’s work, a major influence on Moreau’s style.

Dining Room

Continue into the house, you stop by the dining room, which stands out with its distinctive sea-green and red walls, a colour choice that adds a serene yet sophisticated ambiance. The room is furnished with a polished wooden dining table surrounded by matching chairs, and the walls are embellished with decorative mouldings and framed artworks.

Bedroom

Moreau’s bedroom is small, featuring a modest bed with an ornate headboard, a writing desk, and various personal items. The room is illuminated by natural light filtering through lace-curtained windows, casting a gentle glow on the patterned wallpaper and antique furnishings. One the wall are paintings of his family, many of his mother and family, and one beautiful self-portrait.

Boudoir

Adjacent to the bedroom is the boudoir, a small yet elegant room designed for relaxation and contemplation. Furnished with a comfortable armchair, a delicate writing table, and adorned with decorative objects and artworks, the boudoir reflects Moreau’s penchant for creating spaces that inspire creativity and introspection.

The Second-floor workshop

Climbing to the second floor, I stepped into the first of Moreau’s grand studios, purpose-built in 1895 by architect Albert Lafon at the artist’s request, specifically to display his monumental canvases. The scale of the room alone is breathtaking, made to house Moreau’s most ambitious and deeply symbolic works. This studio is where you feel Moreau pushing the limits of painting, not just in scale, but in the emotional and mythological weight of every image.

Hercules Among the Daughters of Thespius

Moreau likely began Hercules Among the Daughters of Thespius around 1853 and though he enlarged the painting in 1882, Moreau never fully completed it, calling it a work still in progress. The composition draws heavily from Théodore Chassériau’s Tepidarium, which Moreau admired. But his version of this rarely depicted myth, too risqué for many, is deeply personal. Here, the young Hercules, fresh from slaying the lion of Cithaeron, prepares to father children with all 50 daughters of King Thespius, offered to him in gratitude.

Moreau freezes the moment before this mythic act of generation. Hercules sits contemplative, echoing Michelangelo in form and mood. Behind him rise two pedestals bearing sun and moon symbols, bulls and sphinxes, representing the dual forces of life and creation. The daughters drift around him, some asleep, others lost in reverie. For Moreau, this isn’t just a sensual episode, it’s spiritual, almost sacrificial. Hercules, he writes, is “filled with immense sadness… and the solemn exultation of one who gives life, bound by destiny to acts of creation and sacrifice alike.”

Tyrtée chantant pendant le combat

As I turned the corner into the studio, I found myself face to face with something monumental, Tyrtée chantant pendant le combat. The sheer scale of it stopped me in my tracks. Stretching nearly two stories tall, it felt less like a painting and more like a portal into an ancient world, where poetry and battle collide in a moment of raw, mythic power.

The scene centres on Tyrtaeus, the semi-legendary Spartan poet-soldier, raised above the chaos of war, singing amidst the clash of spears and shields. Though his body is dwarfed by the canvas, his presence is magnetic. With arms outstretched and face lifted skyward, he becomes a conduit for divine inspiration—his voice both battle cry and hymn.

What struck me most was the stillness around him. In a swirl of movement, soldiers frozen mid-charge, horses rearing, limbs tangled, Tyrtaeus stands serenely unshaken. Moreau captures not just the violence of war, but its spiritual theatre: this isn’t just combat, it’s a stage where art uplifts the soul and lends purpose to struggle.

The Muses Leaving Their Father Apollo to Go Out and Light the World

The Muses Leaving Their Father Apollo to Go Out and Light the World captures the moment when the nine Muses depart from their father, Apollo, to fulfill their divine mission of inspiring and enlightening humanity through the arts and sciences. In this composition, Apollo is portrayed with a serene yet commanding presence, seated at an elevated position as he oversees his daughters’ departure. The Muses, depicted as graceful and ethereal figures, embody various artistic and scholarly domains. Some of them look back to Apollo, fearful of departing, while others look down as if resigned to their fate. Moreau captures a wonderfully human moment of emotion from the gods here in this painting.

The Chimeras

To the left of the staircase stands one of the unfinished masterpieces of the collection, Les Chimeras. Gustave Moreau’s Les Chimères (The Chimaeras), was painted in 1884, a painting that deptcts a mythic, dreamlike forest teeming with nude female figures and fantastical hybrid creatures, centaurs, winged beasts, fauns, and minotaurs. It’s a visual tapestry of illusion, desire, and the untamed recesses of the human psyche.

At the centre, Lust rides a goat; nearby, a mysterious Eve-like figure embraces a serpent with a human face. On the right, women appear with mythic creatures: Europa astride a winged bull, another caressing a unicorn, reminiscent of The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries. One woman pauses to listen as an angel whispers music into her ear.

The composition is both lyrical and chaotic, with women dispersed across a shadowy, enchanted landscape. Unlike passive muses, these women are active participants in their own surreal visions, locked in silent communion with their mythological companions. Some embrace their chimera-like counterparts, others appear lost in reverie, their expressions unreadable. The setting, part wilderness, part stage, evokes a world that is both ancient and psychological, where every figure and form is charged with symbolic weight.

Leda and Jupiter

The myth of Leda and Jupiter, who seduced her in the form of a swan, has long captivated artists seeking a poetic excuse to explore this salacious tale. Moreau, too, was drawn to its sensual and symbolic layers. For his 1865 version, he recalled a lost Michelangelo Leda, known through a sculpture by Ammannati, of which Moreau owned a plaster cast. But his Leda is more than mythic seduction; she’s rendered with a spiritual ambiguity, evoking both the Virgin of the Annunciation and the Queen in a Coronation. Earthly Love flutters away in triumph, while two winged spirits lift Jupiter’s thunderbolt and diadem, symbols of divine authority, beside his eagle. Below, fauns, dryads, and nymphs kneel in reverence. Even Pan, the embodiment of nature itself, gestures solemnly, summoning all life to witness this cosmic union, a mystery at once erotic, sacred, and eternal.

Third Floor Studio

Make your way up the winding spiral staircase to the third floor which features another grouping of some of Moreau’s best and most sprawling works of art.

Jupiter and Semele

The third-floor studio begins with a showstopper: Jupiter and Semele, painted in 1895 for Léopold Goldschmidt and later gifted to the museum. This towering, radiant canvas commands the room with its electric palette of deep blues, fiery reds, and gleaming greens. At its heart is the myth of Semele, who, tricked by the jealous goddess Juno, asks to see Jupiter in his divine form, an overwhelming vision that destroys her. Semele is shown obliterated in a blaze of divine splendour, while a winged figure, possibly the goat-footed spirit of earthly love, or Bacchus, her unborn son, shields his eyes. Moreau reimagines Jupiter as a youthful, beardless poet-god, cradling a lyre like Apollo.

Beneath the throne, Death wields a bloody sword and Pain wears a crown of thorns, holding a lily, symbols of suffering at the root of human experience. Nearby, Pan, half-goat, stirs with tiny beings struggling to break free, bridging the mortal world with the shadowy depths below. At the base, Night emerges crowned by a crescent moon, surrounded by monsters of Erebus, enigmas still waiting for the light. Twin sphinxes flank the scene, guardians of past and future. From darkness to divine radiance, the painting unfolds vertically like a spiritual ascent, a journey of the soul through myth, mystery, and transcendence.

The Life of Humanity

The Life of Humanity was our favourite painting, a towering polyptych composed of nine panels arranged in three tiers, crowned by a lunette depicting a bloodied Christ, an image of suffering and redemption that frames the entire cycle. In the top row, Adam represents the innocence of childhood: morning prayer, midday ecstasy, and evening rest. The middle tier is devoted to youth, with Orpheus at its heart, flanked by Hesiod, who appears at morning (inspiration) and evening (grief), while Orpheus sings at noon, surrounded by listening animals and the guiding muse Melpomene. The final row descends into the iron weight of adulthood: Cain, symbolizing work, fatigue, and death.

Moreau explained this progression as the arc of all human life: purity (Adam), poetic longing (Orpheus), and suffering (Cain), redeemed ultimately through Christ. The lush, pastoral scenes draw on Hesiod’s mountainous homeland, and Orpheus stands as a figure of balance and beauty. In the final panel, Hesiod grieves, abandoned by his muse, perhaps a nod to the poet’s retreat from epic tales to quiet moral reflection.

Interestingly, Moreau included Orpheus, a pagan figure, between two biblical icons. He believed Orpheus better embodied youth and creative genius than any religious counterpart, calling it “far more intelligent” to choose a figure born of art and imagination over one rooted solely in faith.

The Unicorns

“I saw one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen!” wrote collector Émile Straus on July 14, 1887, after stepping out of Gustave Moreau’s studio and laying eyes on The Unicorns. I can only imagine the spell it must have cast when it was first on display. The painting itself is a luminous dream, clearly inspired by The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries, which had recently been acquired by the Cluny Museum in 1882. In pursuit of what he called “necessary richness,” Moreau blends medieval and Renaissance motifs, sometimes even borrowing from illustrated journals like Le Magasin pittoresque. He once described the setting as “an enchanted island, inhabited only by women, a perfect excuse for every ornamental flourish imaginable.”

In this strange, sumptuous realm, princesses draped in lavish robes embrace unicorns that remain calm and aloof. One woman clutches a lily and a gleaming sword; another’s dress is embroidered with mythical creatures and scenes of epic combat, including Saint George slaying the dragon. A chalice sits quietly in the corner, perhaps the Grail, adding yet another layer of mystery. What strikes me most is the tension Moreau creates between line and colour. The drawing feels delicate and restrained, while the colours shimmer with life, creating a visual rhythm that’s both intricate and elusive. The Unicorns is one of Moreau’s most spellbinding works, a painting that doesn’t reveal itself easily, but stays with you, lingering like a half-remembered dream.

Every inch of this museum reflects Moreau’s singular world, obsessively symbolic, richly detailed, and deeply personal. For those seeking something off the typical museum path, a visit to the Musée Gustave Moreau feels less like a tour and more like stepping into the dreamscape of a forgotten genius!

Yet, as I wandered through its glittering halls, I was struck by how little information was available to self-guided visitors who didn’t opt to buy the more expensive digital guide.

Why Buy a Self-Guided Ticket?

Expert-led guided tours of the Palais Garnier are in high demand, but unless you’ve booked well in advance, you’ll be out of luck, cause these tours fill up FAST! Every guided tour was sold out when I visited, leaving the self-guided option as the only way in. But personally, I love a self-guided tour. You can go at your own pace and stay in rooms that awe you for as long as you want. But often, the incredible gilded halls leave me asking more questions than there are answers in those little brochures. Hence, why you should bring this guide along with you on your self-guided tour.

Setting the Mood

Although many bloggers and TikTokers claim the Palais Garnier is a “hidden gem”, this place is not a quiet or empty place where you’ll be the only one there. Lines are out the door even for advanced tickets, and unless you get fortunate on a calm day, the building will be brimming with people! Wearing headphones and playing music while exploring the Palais Garnier can be a subtle way to mentally escape in such a crowded space.

The building is undeniably majestic, but it’s easy to feel pulled out of the moment when surrounded by noise and chatter. Music helps carve out a private world within the crowd; it focuses your senses, softens the distractions, and allows you to experience the space more intimately, almost as if you’re walking through your opera scene. It’s my secret weapon for centring myself in the experience inside any busy museum or tourist sight.

History of the Palais Garnier

In 1860, under Napoleon III’s Second Empire, a competition was launched to design a new opera house in Paris. Out of roughly 170 submissions (!), Charles Garnier’s design stood out. His proposal, bearing the motto “Hope for much, expect little,” was praised for its clarity, monumental façades, and logical layout that separated public areas, the auditorium, and the stage. Despite being a relatively unknown architect, Garnier won the commission in 1861.

Legend has it that when Empress Eugénie questioned the building’s eclectic style, Garnier cheekily replied, “It’s Napoleon Trois, Ma’am, and you’re complaining?” His design would go on to define the lavish aesthetic of the era, blending technical innovation with theatrical opulence and standing as a symbol of the Second Empire’s ambition and artistic ideals.

Beaux-Arts Style

Garnier built the opera house masterpiece in the popular Beaux-Arts style, which was all the rage in France during the 19th century. Drawing from classical Greek and Roman traditions and Renaissance and Baroque flourishes, this style emphasized drama, proportion, and the integration of sculpture, painting, and design.

The Facade

Before stepping inside, pause to take in the Palais Garnier’s grand southern façade, facing the Place de l’Opéra. It’s a performance crafted by a small army of artisans, 14 painters, dozens of sculptors, and mosaicists, each adding their flourish to this monumental overture of stone and gold. From this spot, you can admire its symmetrical layout, towering columns, and domed elements, emblematic of the Beaux-Arts style.

High above, you’ll spot two gilded copper figures by Charles Gumery: Harmony and Poetry, gleaming from the rooftop like muses watching over the arts. Below them, stone reliefs personify architecture, industry, painting, and sculpture, each symbolized by allegorical women, winged figures, and tools of their trades.

Crowning the grand dome of the Palais Garnier is a striking bronze sculpture by Aimé Millet titled Apollo, Poetry and Music. This dramatic ensemble features the Greek god Apollo, symbol of the arts, holding a golden lyre aloft as he strides forward with radiant confidence. Flanking him are allegorical figures representing Poetry and Music, reinforcing the opera house’s dedication to artistic expression. Gilded and gleaming in the sunlight, the sculpture not only enhances the building’s architectural grandeur but also pays homage to the classical ideals that inspired its creation.

Flanking the entrance, you’ll find busts of legendary composers like Mozart, Beethoven, and Rossini nestled between the columns, and even librettists (Opera composers_ like Scribe and Quinault honoured on either side. On the attic level, Napoleon III’s monogram “N” appears amid swirling garlands and musical motifs, all crowned by a frieze of gilded antique masks—fifty-three laughing and weeping in cast iron.

Emperor’s Pavilion

If you booked a ticket in advance, you’ll enter the building via the eastern side, on Rue Scribe, called the Emperor’s Pavilion. Long before cars, this space once offered privileged subscribers a private, sheltered entryway, letting them step directly from their carriages into the warmth and splendour of the opera house.

Topped by a 13.5-metre dome, the pavilion is marked by twin obelisks at its north and south entrances, adding an air of ceremonial grandeur to what was, essentially, the VIP entrance of its day. And today, you are one of those VIPs!

Rotonde des Abonnés

Upon entering the Palais Garnier, visitors step into the Rotonde des Abonnés, just after the security check. The rotunda is adorned with intricate mosaics, gilded details, and classical motifs, all in the Beaux-Arts style, emphasizing symmetry, grandeur, and elaborate ornamentation.

Cave of the Pythia

Tucked at the foot of the Grand Staircase is a little alcove known as the Cave of the Pythia. In ancient Greece, the Pythia was a vessel through which the divine spoke, a mystic figure who transformed questions into revelations. In many ways, theatre and opera share a similar approach: they take human stories, emotions, and dreams and elevate them into something transcendent through music, performance, and spectacle. Rather than the serene, ethereal oracle of myth, this Pythia is wild and fierce, illuminated from below as if touched by divine fire. I love to think this is how the artist saw opera, as a fierce creature, full of energy and power.

Grand Staircase

As you move beyond the Cave of Pythia, you walk out into the awe-inspiring grandeur of the Grand Staircase. Nowhere is Beaux-Arts grandeur more on display than in the grand staircase. Crafted from white, green, and red marble, its curving form is meant to impress and elevate physically and emotionally.

Twin flights of stairs sweep upward like a procession route, surrounded by polished balustrades, ornate lamp-holding caryatids, and balconies where 19th-century opera-goers would pause to observe (and be observed). The bases of the staircase are adorned with sculpted female figures holding torch-like lamps, known as torchères.

Ascending the Grand Staircase you feel like a prince or princess, ascending a grand staircase as beautiful as some inside the most elegant palaces around the world.

Ceiling

Look up as you ascend the Grand Staircase, and you’ll find the ceiling transformed into a celestial theatre. The soaring panels were painted by Isidore Pils and depict a series of allegorical scenes: The Triumph of Apollo, The Enchantment of Music Deploying its Charms, Minerva Battling Brutality under the Gaze of the Olympian Gods, and The City of Paris Receiving the Plans for the New Opera House.

When the canvases were first mounted just two months before the grand opening in 1875, Garnier was dismayed. They were too dark and too heavy for the luminous grandeur of the staircase below. At 61, Pils climbed the scaffolding to rework them on-site, aided by two of Garnier’s architecture students. The strain proved too much; Pils fell ill and was unable to finish the work.

His students completed the final touches, and the scaffolding came down just in time, one day before the grand unveiling. Today, the ceiling remains a visual triumph and a testament to the relentless dedication behind every brushstroke and beam of this opulent space.

The Amphitheatre Entrance

As you approach the entrance to the amphitheatre, you’re greeted by two imposing caryatids sculpted by Jules Thomas. On the left stands Tragedy, her gaze stern and focused, gripping a sword as if guarding dramatic art’s emotional depth and seriousness. On the right is Comedy, gentler in posture, holding a harp, an emblem of lightness, music, and joy. Together, they represent the eternal balance of the stage: sorrow and laughter, conflict and harmony.

Pass through this entrance and into the lobby reserved for the orchestra boxes, where you’ll have the chance to peek inside one of these exclusive spaces and glimpse the auditorium beyond. The entire orchestra level is adorned with stunning mosaics inspired by ancient Greek design. Greek mythology is a recurring motif throughout the opera house, reflecting the timeless bond between myth and opera, both steeped in powerful storytelling, heightened emotion, and epic, larger-than-life figures.

The Auditorium

Step through the velvet-draped entrance into the Palais Garnier’s auditorium, and you’ll find yourself in the breathtaking core of this architectural masterpiece. Designed in the classic Italian horseshoe, the hall seats 1,979 spectators and wraps around the stage in a rich embrace of red velvet, gold leaf, and intricate ornamentation.

The stage itself is a behemoth, the largest in Europe, capable of simultaneously accommodating up to 450 performers. Even the main curtain is a work of art; its canvas is painted to resemble a luxurious drape, and it is complete with trompe-l’oeil tassels and braiding that add an extra touch of theatrical illusion.

Marc Chagall’s Fresco

In 1964, a bold new layer was added: a modern ceiling mural by famed artist Marc Chagall. Chagall’s vivid, dreamlike ceiling is a whirl of colour and emotion, depicting scenes from 14 operas by composers such as Mozart, Wagner, Debussy, Verdi, and Bizet. His brush brings a lyrical, almost whimsical spirit to the dome, contrasting sharply with the classical opulence of Garnier’s design.

The Chandelier

Suspended like a radiant sun at the heart of the Palais Garnier’s auditorium is its famous chandelier, an enormous, seven-ton creation of bronze and crystal, personally envisioned by Charles Garnier himself. Brought to life through a model by Jules Corboz and crafted by Lacarière, Delatour & Cie, it cost a staggering 30,000 gold francs, a sum befitting its dramatic presence.

The Phantom’s Box

Back in the orchestra lobby, make your way over to Box No. 5, still famously reserved for the one and only Phantom of the Opera. You’ll know it’s his by the discreet plaque that reads “Phantom of the Opera,” a subtle tribute to the legend that haunts these halls.

Gaston Leroux, a journalist-turned-novelist, drew inspiration for his 1910 Gothic tale from real events and features within the opera house. One such event was the infamous 1896 incident when a counterweight from the central chandelier fell during a performance, tragically killing an audience member. This morbid real life tragedy became a cornerstone of the Phantom’s fictional story.

Leroux was fascinated by the Palais Garnier’s mysterious architecture, especially its hidden corridors, underground lake, and abandoned cellars. And yes, there is said to be a subterranean reservoir beneath the opera house, built to manage the high groundwater levels beneath Paris. This subterranean reservoir serves as the Phantom’s lair in the book, this shadowy underworld sparked the idea of the Phantom’s lair.

Phantom of the Opera Musical

Today, most people know the Phantom of the Opera for the musical more than the original book. The iconic musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, has become inseparable from the mystique of the Palais Garnier. Based on Gaston Leroux’s novel, the story unfolds in the shadowy depths of this opulent opera house, where a mysterious, masked figure haunts the theatre and becomes obsessed with a young soprano. With its sweeping score, gothic romance, and dramatic setting, the musical brought global fame to the Palais Garnier, turning it into a real-world backdrop for one of Broadway’s longest-running shows.

The Avant-Foyer

Exiting back out to the Grand Staircase, take a walk around the second layer where you find the elegant Avant-Foyer, often called the Foyer of Mosaics. Spanning twenty metres in length, this space is lined with richly adorned surfaces, where shimmering mosaics catch the light like scattered jewels. It serves as a kind of prologue to the splendour of the Grand Foyer beyond.

At either end of the Avant-Foyer are arched doorways leading to the Salon du Soleil (Sun Salon) on the east and the Salon de la Lune (Moon Salon) on the west, two symbolic rooms representing celestial dualities, day and night, illumination and mystery. To the north, the space opens dramatically to the Grand Staircase, while to the south, three towering doors lead into the Grand Foyer itself.

The ceiling is richly adorned with two inscriptions in 8th-century Byzantine Greek uncial script. One inscription commemorates the innovative use of decorative mosaic in France, while the other credits the artists involved: Curzon for the figures, Salviati for their execution, Facchina for the ornamentation, and Garnier for the architecture.

Surrounding the ceiling are four mosaic panels depicting mythological couples: Hermes and Psyche, Orpheus and Eurydice, Artemis and Endymion, and Eos and Cephalus. The scenes alternate between themes of love and death, two couples are shown departing the underworld, while the others convey more sensual, romantic encounters. Each pair is labelled in Greek, and the mosaics are framed by elaborate decorations featuring theatre masks, musical instruments, birds, flowers, and golden accents.

Additionally, four bronze-gilt medallions represent musical instruments from different cultures: a sistrum for Egypt, lyre for Greece, tambourine and pan flute for Italy, and an ivory horn for France. Each is surrounded by foliage typical of the region, with the country names inscribed in Greek.

The Grand Foyer

From the Avant-Foyer, you finally have a chance to step into the most beautiful room in the entire opera house, the Grand Foyer! Walking into this room you feel as though you’re no longer just in an opera house, you’re in a temple of art and light. Towering 18 metres high, stretching 54 metres long and 13 metres wide, this opulent hall was designed as a drawing room for 19th-century Parisian high society as well as the famed Hall of Mirrors in Versaille.

Restored in 2004 to its full glory, the ceiling is a masterpiece by Paul-Jacques-Aimé Baudry, with sweeping allegorical scenes that chart the journey of music through myth and time, Apollo, Comedy, and lyrical muses float overhead in gold-framed panels that glow with dramatic energy.

The chandeliers, enormous, cascading tiers of crystal and bronze, cast a warm, theatrical glow, their flickering flames reflected infinitely in the oversized mirrors lining the walls. Those mirrors, opposite tall arched windows, double the space in every direction, creating a kaleidoscope of light and motion.

At either end of the Foyer are octagonal salons that further amplify the celestial theme. The eastern salon features a ceiling by Jules-Élie Delaunay, including The Zodiac and Apollo Receiving the Lyre, while the western salon boasts work by Félix-Joseph Barrias.

Look closely along the Grand Foyer’s walls and you’ll find a cast of characters drawn straight from Greek mythology. Eight of the nine Muses appear here, goddesses of the arts, their names inscribed in Greek. The missing muse, Polyhymnia (of sacred poetry), was famously “sacrificed” due to lack of space, though she still makes a quiet cameo in a statue among the Qualities, and again in the Parnassus mural tucked into a corner. Alongside the muses, personifications like Epithumia (desire), Sophrosyne (soundness of mind), and Charis (grace) enrich the symbolism, each embodying virtues that mirror the spirit of opera itself.

What sets this room apart from Versailles is its sense of theatricality. While Versailles was designed to glorify the monarchy, the Grand Foyer glorifies the arts. It feels more intimate despite its scale, less like a throne room and more like a stage where history, architecture, and imagination converge. It’s a space where you can almost hear the rustling silk of 19th-century opera-goers, their laughter and gossip drifting beneath the chandeliers. This is Paris at its most dramatic and dazzling, and for a moment, it’s yours.

Library Museum

If the Grand Foyer is busy with a large guided tour and you’re looking to sneak away from the crowds for a few minutes, take a peak inside the Library-Museum of the Opera (Bibliothèque-Musée de l’Opéra), located just off of the Grand Foyer. Originally established to house the archives of the Paris Opera, this intimate space now holds a fascinating collection of set models, costumes, drawings, and rare manuscripts that trace the rich history of French opera and ballet.

At the back of the gallery space, you can also step into the library itself. Lined with dark wood bookshelves and bathed in golden light, the library itself feels like a 19th-century time capsule. Managed by the National Library of France, it offers a quieter, scholarly contrast to the theatrical splendour of the rest of the building.

Hallways

Take some time to wander the elegant corridors that line the outer walls of the Opera House. These long hallways are adorned with towering mirrors, richly painted columns, and yet more glittering chandeliers, offering a quieter, equally enchanting extension of the building’s opulent interior.

The Salons of the Sun and Moon

Don’t miss out exploring the outer Salon du Soleil (Salon of the Sun) to the east, and the Salon de la Lune (Salon of the Moon) to the west. These twin spaces were originally conceived as themed entryways, vestibules leading to the smoking lounge and the Galerie du Glacier, a refreshment area. Their decorative themes were meant to evoke heat and cold, respectively: the fiery energy of the sun for the smoking room, and the icy elegance of the moon for the Glacier.

However, in the final frenzied weeks before the grand inauguration in 1875, an amusing error occurred. In the rush to complete construction, the thematic decorations were inadvertently reversed. The sun now leads to the cooler refreshment gallery, and the moon to the once smoke-filled lounge. Despite this mix-up, the salons remain enchanting. The Salon du Soleil is bathed in warm tones and gilded accents, echoing radiance and vitality, while the Salon de la Lune glows with cooler hues, silvery details, and a dreamlike calm.

Visiting the Palais Garnier is like stepping into a dream woven from music, myth, and marble. Whether you’re tracing the footsteps of phantom legends, marvelling at golden mosaics, or soaking in the rich symbolism etched into every sculpture and ceiling, the opera house offers far more than just architectural beauty. I hope this self-guided tour has given you some insights into the secret embedded in the gold leaf, but of course, a few mysteries are bound to be left behind, to ensure the dark secrets of the opera house endure…

History of Montmartre for Kids

You are standing in Montmartre, a hill wrapped in secrets and touched by the extraordinary. Long before the winding streets and hidden passageways that exist today, Paris was a quiet village, surrounded by dense forests and a twisting river. Over the centuries, kings ruled, knights fought, and clever revolutionaries plotted in the shadows, gradually shaping the grand city we now recognize.

But Montmartre, ah, Montmartre, it has always stood apart. Perched high above the city like a silent guardian, it once bustled with the gentle rhythm of windmills turning in the breeze. Vineyards blanketed the hillside, and villagers began each day by baking fresh bread, the scent of croissants and baguettes drifting down toward the city below.

In the 19th century, a curious transformation unfolded. Artists, dancers, and dreamers flocked to this hilltop haven, filling its quiet streets with colour, music, and revolutionary ideas. Some of the world’s most iconic painters rented tiny studios across the neighbourhood, capturing Montmartre’s enchantment on canvas and preserving its spirit for generations to come.

Le Bateau-Lavoir

Our tour starts in front of #13 Rue Ravignan on Place Emile Goudeau. This building was initially called Le Bateau-Lavoir, which means “The Washhouse Boat” in French. Even though it wasn’t a boat, people thought the old building looked like the floating laundry barges on the river. But here’s the cool part, this was a secret hideout for who is now one of the world’s most famous painters! A strange painter known for his wild shapes and crazy ideas, Pablo Picasso.

This was Picasso’s first studio in Paris, a tiny, rickety old place where he and his friends created amazing art that changed the world. They had no heating, so they’d huddle together in the winter. Imagine painting with gloves on under dim candlelight, the smell of oil paint filling the room until it stank of nothing but! Nonetheless, it was a place where creative people gathered, shared ideas, and made art that changed the world. Picasso even painted one of his most famous artworks here, ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon.’

Wallace Fountains

All over Paris, you might spot strange, tall green fountains with four elegant ladies holding something above their heads. These are Wallace Fountains, and they hold a secret, fresh drinking water! Long ago, a kind Englishman named Sir Richard Wallace wanted to help the people of Paris have free, clean water. So, he built these fountains, decorating them with four figures who represent kindness, charity, simplicity, and sobriety (that means staying away from things that aren’t good for you).

Grab a Hot Chocolate

If you’ve begun this tour early in the morning, there’s no better way to start the day than by stopping at one of Montmartre’s charming coffee shops. Many of them also serve rich chocolat chaud, which means hot chocolate, perfect for the kids. But this isn’t just a sweet treat. Hot chocolate has a fascinating past tied to the very history of France, making it a delicious and meaningful way to begin your adventure. When hot chocolate first arrived in France in 1615, it wasn’t sweet at all! A Spanish princess, Anne of Austria, brought the recipe when she married King Louis XIII, but back then, it was bitter and spicy. French chefs soon worked their magic, adding sugar and milk, creating the creamy, delicious treat we love today!

By the time King Louis XIV ruled France, hot chocolate was the ultimate fancy royal drink at the Palace of Versailles. And guess what? The famous queen who lost her head, Marie Antoinette, was obsessed with it! She even had her own special royal chocolate chef to make it just right. Lucky for us, you don’t have to be royalty to enjoy a cup today!

Au Marche de la Butte

Do you see the little grocery store with the bright green exterior? That’s no ordinary shop… it’s the famous Au Marché de la Butte! But why is it famous? Well, if you’ve seen the movie Amélie, you might recognize it! In the film, Amélie, an adventurous and clever girl, comes here to shop while solving little mysteries in her neighbourhood. Just like you’re doing today! The name “Marché de la Butte” means “Market of the Hill” because it sits right here on the slopes of Montmartre, one of the highest places in all of Paris!

Passages des Abbesses

Take a little shortcut down the stairs just behind Au Marche de la Butte, which leads onto the Passage de Abbesses, a narrow pathway built in 1840. It was named to honour Montmartre’s abbesses (female heads of abbeys). Montmartre was once a very tight-knit religious community, and the abbesses controlled much of the land in this area, just like city officials would today.

At the bottom of the stairs, you’ll find the entrance to the Jardin des Abesses. The Jardin des Abbesses is a quiet, leafy retreat just steps from the lively Place des Abbesses. Once part of a convent garden, it pays tribute to the abbesses of the historic Montmartre Abbey. Designed in a medieval herb garden style, it features medicinal plants laid out in neat squares.

I Love You Wall

Around the corner from the Jardin des Abesses, you will spot a huge blue mural covered in words written in over 250 languages! This incredible wall called “Le Mur des Je T’aime” (The I Love You Wall), was created in 2000 as a reminder that love has no borders, no language barriers and always finds a way to bring people together. No matter where you are from or what language you speak, love is something everyone understands.

Paris Metro

Paris has one of the oldest underground train systems in the world? And guess what? Its entrance looks like something straight out of a storybook! Take a look at the green, curvy metal archway nearby. Doesn’t it look like a magical portal with swirling vines? But it’s not leading to a secret world. Look closely at the green sign. What is the long word written across the top?

That’s right, “Métropolitain”! Or just “Métro” for short! This word comes from “metropolis,” which means a big city, because when the Metro first opened in 1900, it was built to connect all the most important places in Paris, just in time for the World’s Fair! Back then, the underground tunnels were a brand-new idea, and today, millions of people ride the Metro every day!

Kozy

It’s time to take a little break to give your feet a rest and there is no better place than inside Kozy. This charming and casual brunch spot is home to some delicious pastries, so order up some croissants to sit and enjoy while we talk about the history of bread in France!

In France, bread is so important that there are even BREAD LAWS! Every village is legally obligated to have at least one bakery, so no one has to suffer a baguette emergency! If a town doesn’t have one, the mayor must find a way to provide fresh bread, even if it means delivering it from a nearby village!

There are also laws on what ingredients are allowed in baguettes. They must be made with only four ingredients; flour, water, salt, and yeast. That means no preservatives! That’s why baguettes here in France taste best when they’re fresh! If a French baker dares to mess with the sacred baguette recipe, adding sneaky ingredients, they could face fines, lose their fancy baker title, or even cause a national bread crisis (mon dieu!). Breaking baguette laws is practically a crime against deliciousness!

Croissant History

Take a good look at the shape of the croissant. It is not just for decoration; its design has a hidden history! Back in 1683, a great battle took place in Vienna, Austria. The Ottoman army surrounded the city and tried to dig secret tunnels to sneak inside at night. But they did not count on the city’s bakers, who were already awake, making bread before sunrise! Hearing strange sounds underground, the bakers warned the soldiers, who stopped the attack just in time. To celebrate, they baked a special crescent-shaped pastry—a shape taken from the Ottoman Empire’s flag. What does the flag remind you of?

But how did the croissant become a French favourite? In 1770, Austrian princess Marie Antoinette married King Louis XVI and moved to France. She left Vienna behind but could not forget her favourite crescent-shaped pastry. Soon, this delicious treat became popular across France, and its name, “croissant,” comes from the French word for “crescent.”

Laulhère Berets

After your little snack, take a look at the shop just down the road, Laulhère, one of the most prestigious beret shops in Paris! The Beret hat has been worn in France for hundreds of years, starting with shepherds in the Pyrenees mountains who used it to stay warm. Over time, it became popular with artists, soldiers, and even movie stars! French kings in the 17th century made the beret an official part of military uniforms, and during World War II, members of the French Resistance wore them to blend in while carrying out secret missions. Many famous painters like Pablo Picasso and Claude Monet wore berets while creating their masterpieces, and today, it is one of the most recognizable symbols of French fashion. You might even spot a stylish Parisian wearing one as you explore!

Maracons

Grab yourself a little sweet from Christophe Roussel, where you can find one of the most iconic French treats, the macaron. Did you know this delicious little cookie wasn’t always French? In the 1500s, a queen named Catherine de’ Medici travelled from Italy to France to marry a French king. She brought fancy chefs with her, and one of their specialties was a simple almond cookie, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The French bakers loved it, and soon, they started making their own versions!

But here’s the twist, the macarons back then didn’t look like the ones we know today! There was no filling, no bright colours, and no delicate flavours. It was just a little cookie… but that was about to change! Fast forward to the 20th century, when clever French bakers had a brilliant idea: what if we combine two cookies with a creamy filling in the middle? And voilà! The macaron we know and love was born! Now, they come in various flavours, from vanilla to wild, unexpected flavours, like Lemon & Basil, Chocolate & Passionfruit, Rose, Lychee & Raspberry. Each bite is an explosion of flavour!

Rue Foyatier

Armed with your sweet treats, let’s get ready for a challenge! Rue Foyatier is no ordinary street. Instead of cars, it is made entirely of 222 steps leading straight up to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica at the top of Montmartre. The street is named after Denis Foyatier, a famous French sculptor. If you need a break, the Montmartre Funicular runs right beside it, taking visitors up in just 90 seconds.

Sacre Coeur

Whether you conquered all 222 steps or took the funicular for a swift escape (clever move!), you now stand at the highest point in Paris. Look around, the city unfolds before you like a giant map, filled with secrets waiting to be discovered. Take a moment to enjoy a well-earned snack with the best view in town.

Why do you think Parisians chose to build such a magnificent church in a spot that requires such a climb to reach? The answer is hidden in a legendary tale. Long ago, a courageous man named Saint Denis lived in Paris. As a bishop, he taught people about kindness and faith, but not everyone welcomed his message. The Roman rulers saw him as a threat, so one day, he was captured and brought to a hill just outside the city to face execution. That very hill is where you are standing now!

The name Montmartre means “Mountain of Martyrs” because Saint Denis was beheaded right here. But this is where the legend takes an astonishing turn. Instead of collapsing after they chopped off his head, Saint-Denis did something unbelievable! He picked up his head and started walking! He travelled for miles, still preaching along the way, before finally stopping at the place where he would be buried. That very spot became the town of Saint-Denis, just outside Paris, where his story is remembered to this day!

Place du Tertre

Just a few steps from Sacre Coeur, you’ll find the Place du Tertre. A long time ago, in the 1100s, Place du Tertre was part of a monastery where monks lived quietly, growing vineyards and baking bread. In French, “Place” refers to a public square where people gather in a town or city. You’ll find this word all over Paris, so it’s good to know!

“Tertre” means “small hill” in French because Montmartre, back then, was still mostly farmland and windmills. But by the 1800s, Montmartre had been transformed; it became a village of artists, full of painters, poets, and musicians looking for inspiration. Place du Tertre quickly became a meeting place for artists, and soon, it was filled with easels, paintbrushes, and creative ideas!

Today, Place du Tertre is one of the most famous squares in Paris, where local artists still set up their easels and paint right before you! Some artists create detailed portraits, while others paint beautiful views of Montmartre, just like the Impressionists did over 100 years ago. A portrait from an artist you love is one of the most wonderful souvenirs you can get in Paris, and I highly recommend it!

Maison Rose

The walk from Place du Tertre to La Maison Rose is a short but scenic stroll through some of Montmartre’s most charming corners. After just a few minutes, you’ll spot La Maison Rose on the corner of Rue de l’Abreuvoir. 100 years ago, Montmartre was not the busy tourist spot you see today. It was a quiet countryside village filled with windmills, vineyards, and artists. Painters, writers, and musicians came here to create their masterpieces and ‘La Maison Rose‘ became a unique gathering place for them.

The café was opened in the early 1900s by Germaine Pichot, who married the Spanish painter Ramon Pichot. But before that, she was a famous model for some of the most important artists of her time, including Pablo Picasso!

Clos Montmartre

Continuing down Rue des Saules, you will spot on your right a hidden vineyard right here in Montmartre. This is the Clos Montmartre. The vineyard you see today was planted in 1930 to help bring back this lost part of Montmartre’s history. Every year, the grapes are harvested and turned into a special Montmartre wine, though only a small amount is made. The money from selling the wine goes to charity, making this vineyard not only historic but also helpful to the community.

Lapin Agile

Across from the vineyard is a tiny, old cabaret with a most unusual sign. This is Cabaret Au Lapin Agile, one of Paris’s most legendary and mischievous spots! This cabaret was built in the 1860s when it was just a small wine tavern where locals, poets, and musicians would gather to tell stories and sing songs.

Back then, it was known by a very different name, “Cabaret des Assassins” (The Cabaret of the Assassins)! The name comes from a painting on the wall that shows famous criminals and outlaws from history. One day, a playful artist named André Gill designed a new sign for the cabaret. You can still spot it on the building today!

This painting features a rabbit wearing a scarf jumping out of a pot. The locals loved the sign so much that they started calling the cabaret “Le Lapin à Gill” (which means “Gill’s Rabbit”). Over time, the name changed to “Lapin Agile,” which in French sounds like “The Agile Rabbit” or “The Dancing Rabbit!“

Rue de l’Abreuvoir

Head back up the hill and turn down the street where you found the Maison Rose. This is the famous Rue de l’Abreuvoir, one of Paris’s oldest streets. First mentioned in 1325 when it was known as “ruelle qui va au but,” meaning “the lane that leads to the end.” The name “Abreuvoir,” adopted in 1843, translates to “watering trough,” reflecting its past role in providing water for animals and residents in Montmartre.

See if you can spot the sundial with a mysterious message at #4 Rue de l’Abreuvoir. Unlike modern clocks, sundials tell time using the sun’s shadow, marking the passing hours as the light moves across its face. But this one is special! It features an inscription: “When you will ring, I will sing.” The “you” in this riddle refers to the bell tower atop Sacré-Cœur, which looms above us. The “I” refers to the rooster painted above the sundial.

Place Dalida

At the base of the hill, you will find a bronze statue of a woman who once ruled the stage with her incredible voice and dazzling presence. She was known by only one name, Dalida. She was one of the first superstar singers, just like today’s biggest pop stars! Born in Egypt in 1933, she moved to France, where she became world-famous for singing in multiple languages, including French, Italian, Arabic, and Spanish. Take a close look at the statue; some parts shine! Legend says that rubbing her chest brings good luck in love, which is why so many visitors have worn it smooth and shiny over time.

Allée des brouillards

From the Buste de Dalida, head west along the Allée des Brouillards and take a moment to enjoy this quiet, hidden alley. Allée des Brouillards means “Alley of the Mists”; doesn’t that sound mysterious? Long ago, this little street was often covered in thick morning fog, making it look like a place where ghosts might lurk! If you are lucky enough to walk along this alley on a foggy day, see if you can spot any ghosts yourself!

Looking over the fence on your left stands a beautiful old mansion called the Château des Brouillards. This grand house, built in the 18th century, has been home to many painters, writers, and dreamers who wanted to escape the city’s noise. One of its most famous residents was Pierre-Auguste Renoir, one of the greatest painters in history! Imagine Renoir walking down this misty alley, dreaming up his next masterpiece.

Park Suzanne Buisson Square

Continue down the stairs onto Place de Casadesus, then turn left and pass through the green gates into Square Suzanne Buisson. In the heart of this peaceful park, you’ll find a curious sight: a stone statue of Saint Denis, the patron saint of Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur. Legend has it he was beheaded, and here he stands, calmly holding his own head in his hands, gazing out over the tranquil greenery that surrounds him.

Passe-Muraille

From the Statue of Saint-Denis, head southwest on Impasse Girardon onto Avenue Junot. Continue east for a short distance, as the street turns into Place Marcel Aymé where you will find Le Passe-Muraille. Long ago, a famous writer wrote a story about a man called Dutilleul, who discovered he had an unbelievable power. He could walk through walls just like a ghost! At first, he used his ability for fun, sneaking into places just to surprise people. But soon, he got a little too bold. He used his talent to trick his boss, sneak into secret places, and even escape from prison! But here’s the twist, one day, just as he was walking through a wall, something went terribly wrong. His powers vanished, leaving him trapped halfway through the stone, stuck forever! That is exactly what you see today, the statue of Le Passe-Muraille, or The Man Who Walked Through Walls.

From Le Passe-Muraille, head on Place Marcel Aymé toward Rue Girardon. Turn left onto Rue Girardon, where Le Moulin de la Galette will be on the right. This is the old Moulin de la Galette, one of the last wooden windmills left in Montmartre. A long time ago, in the 1600s, Montmartre was full of farms and windmills. The windmills were used to grind wheat into flour so bakers could make bread. But one family, the Debrays, had a great idea! Instead of just making flour, why not bake something special? So, they started making a delicious dessert called a “galette,” (a type of simple French cake) soon, people from all over Paris would come to Montmartre to taste it. That’s how the windmill got its name: Moulin (windmill) de la Galette (of the cake)!

But the real excitement started in the 1800s, when this windmill became one of the most famous dance halls in Paris. Every Sunday, people from all over the city would come here to dance, eat, and celebrate. Artists like Pierre-Auguste Renoir loved to watch the lively scene, and he even painted one of the most famous paintings of all time, ‘Bal du Moulin de la Galette,’ to capture the fun!

À la Mère de Famille

From Le Moulin de la Galette, head west on Rue Lepic toward Rue Tholozé, then turn left onto Rue Tholozé and take the stairs. Turn right onto Rue des Abbesses, then left back onto Rue Lepic, where À la Mère de Famille will be on the right. À la Mère de Famille means “To the Mother of the Family” in French. because this shop has been making delicious sweets as a family-run business for over 250 years! That’s longer than most buildings in Montmartre have been standing! Inside, you’ll find handmade chocolates, colourful candies, and special French treats like calissons (sweet almond candies) and nougat (a chewy honey and nut treat). Everything here is made using traditional recipes, just like in 1761, when the shop first opened. Back then, people would visit to buy chocolates as a special gift or to enjoy as a rare treat. Today, anyone can step inside and taste a little piece of history!

Moulin Rouge

From À la Mère de Famille, head southwest on Rue Lepic toward Rue Robert Planquette, then turn right onto Place Blanche/Boulevard de Clichy. Continue along Boulevard de Clichy, where the Moulin Rouge will be on the right. Welcome to the most famous cabaret in the world, the Moulin Rouge! With its bright red windmill and glowing lights, this is where Montmartre’s nightlife truly began. But why is this place so special?…

Opened in 1889, the Moulin Rouge quickly became the most thrilling spot in Paris, known for its dazzling Cancan dancers! The Cancan started in the 1830s as a simple line dance, but over time, dancers made it wilder and more daring. By the time the Moulin Rouge opened, it had become a high-energy spectacle, filled with high kicks, twirling skirts, cartwheels, and splits that left audiences amazed! Back then, most women wore long, heavy dresses, so Cancan dancers shocked the crowd by lifting their skirts and revealing their frilly petticoats and stockings. Some thought it was too bold, but that only made it more exciting!”

When we think of the Moulin Rouge, one artist stands out more than any other, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec! He loved the energy of Montmartre’s nightlife and captured it in his art. Instead of painting kings and grand palaces, he focused on the real people of Montmartre, dancers, singers, performers, and even the lively crowds watching the shows. His bold, colourful posters became famous all over Paris, showing dancers in swirling skirts, high-kicking their legs, and the bright lights of the Moulin Rouge stage. One of his most famous subjects was La Goulue, the queen of the Cancan dance. Toulouse-Lautrec’s artwork helped make the Moulin Rouge legendary, and even today when people imagine Montmartre’s nightlife, they picture his stunning paintings and posters!

And if you’re a bookworm like me, you’ve undoubtedly heard of the famed Shakespeare & Co., heralded as one of the best bookstores in Paris. And for good reason! Stepping into Shakespeare and Company in Paris feels like walking into a dream where books come alive. Wooden shelves are tucked into every corner, with book sometimes spilling onto the floor. Narrow pathways lead visitors through this labyrinth, creating a sense of discovery at every turn. However, Shakespeare & Co. draws massive crowds these days! Located in the heart of the Latin Quarter, near iconic landmarks like Notre Dame and the Seine, it’s a natural stop for tourists exploring the city.

To beat the crowds, visiting early in the morning or during off-peak seasons is best. But even when I followed my advice and arrived early, I saw lineups an hour-long along the Seine. If you don’t have all the time in the world to wait in this line, I want you to know plenty of other fabulous bookstores in Paris deserve your time and money. Step inside and let the labyrinth of literature pull you in. Pro tip: They sometimes offer free coffee or tea—perfect for browsing on a chilly day.

Halle Saint Pierre

Hidden at the foot of Montmartre, the bookstore at Halle Saint Pierre is a sanctuary for art lovers and bookworms alike. Housed in a delightful 19th-century building with a unique industrial design, its metal beams and large windows create a bright, open atmosphere, ideal for perusing the extensive collection. This is no ordinary bookstore—it offers a diverse range of books on art, photography, and design, as well as intriguing works that delve into The history and culture of Paris. And to add to its charm, there’s a cozy cafe right inside, perfect for enjoying a coffee while getting lost in a good book or jotting down your thoughts like all those famed writers who came to Paris before you.

Bouquinistes

The bouquinistes along the Seine are a Parisian icon, instantly recognizable by their green metal stalls brimming with books and other ephemeral treasures such as second-hand prints, postcards, and collectables. The term “bouquinistes” comes from the Flemish word “boeckjin,” which means “small book.” Bouquiniste history can be traced back to their origins in the 16th century, a testament to Paris’s enduring love for literature and art. Their rich history, dating back to 1752, is a testament to the enduring love of Paris for literature and art. Browsing here feels more like a treasure hunt than a shopping trip. My favourite finds are vintage French magazines, replete with stunning photography and ads that reflect back the trends of the time.

Librairie Du Passage

Tucked away in the elegant Passage Jouffroy, the Librairie du Passage offers a quiet escape for anyone drawn to books, art, and history. With more than 30,000 titles carefully selected for their focus on creativity and the past, this bookstore feels like a true discovery for those who love to linger among shelves brimming with inspiration. The soft natural light that filters through the passage’s glass ceiling creates a warm, inviting atmosphere, perfect for immersing yourself in these literary treasures.

Le Monte-en-l’air

For a more eclectic experience, head to the vibrant Belleville neighbourhood and visit the artistic haven of Le Monte-en-l’air. If it’s your second or third trip to Paris, Belleville is a lesser-known and authentic district that’s well worth your time, with its lively streets, diverse food scene, and artistic flair. And Belleville Park, a local favourite for relaxation, offers stunning panoramic views of the city. Le Monte-en-l’air, an artsy bookstore, is a treasure trove specializing in graphic novels, quirky zines, and contemporary art books. These are my favourite kinds of stores to visit when on vacation, to seek out unique books on the city I’m visiting that go beyond traditional travel guides, and to dive into curious subjects like ghosts, gastronomy, and galleries!

Librairie Jousseaume

For those who enjoy books and history, Librairie Jousseaume is a genuine treasure tucked away in the magnificent Galerie Vivienne in the center of Paris. Having been in business since 1862, this is one of the oldest bookstores in the city. The shop is brimming with rare editions, old engravings, vintage postcards and used books. Stepping inside feels like taking a trip back in time, surrounded by cozy wooden selves, vintage signs and rustic decor. With more than 40,000 books here for you to discover, you can spend an entire afternoon perusing the treasures here.

Librairie du Centre Pompidou

The Librairie du Centre Pompidou, located within the renowned Centre Pompidou in Paris, is a must-visit for art enthusiasts, tourists, and researchers. The best part? You don’t need a ticket to get into the bookstore! It’s the largest bookstore in Europe dedicated to modern and contemporary art, boasting an extensive collection of over 15,000 titles. These include monographs, thematic works, historical analyses, and critical studies from the 20th and 21st centuries. The diverse array of publications, such as exhibition catalogues, art books, and multimedia products, many of which are published by the Centre Pompidou’s own editions, is a testament to their supreme work in the field of art books. Grand Palais des Glaces

After a long hiatus, the Grand Palais des Glaces is back!!! This historic Grand Palais has been transformed into a winter wonderland featuring the world’s largest indoor ice rink. From December 14, 2024, to January 8, 2025, visitors can glide across a 3,000-square-meter ice surface beneath the venue’s iconic glass roof. By day, skaters can enjoy the tranquil beauty of gliding under the gentle illumination of natural light pouring through the stunning glass roof, creating a peaceful and enchanting experience. In the evening, the atmosphere shifts into a dynamic celebration, complete with live DJ performances and captivating light shows that bring a festive and energetic vibe to the rink.

Tickets must be purchased online and are priced according to the time of day and the age of the skater, ensuring there’s an option for everyone to join in the fun. Morning sessions are available at €25 for adults and €15 for children, while afternoon slots cost €30 for adults and €18 for kids. Evening sessions are priced at €36 for everyone, with free entry for children under three. Tickets tend to sell out quickly, so booking ahead is highly recommended! Skate rentals are part of the ticket package, accommodating European sizes from 25 to 50.

Although the most notable churches are often the most popular to visit, even the small neighbourhood churches have lovingly created nativity scenes that are well worth a visit.

The song ‘Chesnut Roasting on an Open Fire‘ should have been written about Paris because no matter where you seem to be in this city, there are literally roasted chestnuts (marrons chauds) filling the air with that iconic warm, nutty aroma. At Christmas, vendors can be found across Paris, often near Christmas markets, busy shopping streets, and landmarks like the Champs-Élysées or Montmartre. The chestnuts are roasted over open coals, filling the air with a toasty, earthy aroma that feels like the holidays in every bite. They’re typically sold in paper cones, making them a perfect snack to enjoy while strolling through festive markets or admiring holiday lights. Not only are they delicious, but they also serve as a handy warmer for cold hands on chilly December days. Roasted chestnuts are a simple, nostalgic treat embodying a Parisian Christmas’s charm and tradition.  

Where to Find Roasted Chesnuts in Paris?

The best place to find roasted chestnuts in Paris during the holidays is undoubtedly at the Christmas markets, where the air is filled with their warm, nutty aroma. Almost every market has charming wooden stands brimming with these festive treats, served piping hot in paper cones that make them perfect for nibbling as you stroll. Whether you’re wandering through the Christmas Market in La Défense, the enchanting market at Tuileries Garden, or the smaller neighbourhood markets scattered across the city, the sight of chestnuts roasting over open fires adds to the holiday charm.

Vin Chaud, French mulled wine

Vin Chaud, or French mulled wine, is a quintessential winter drink that warms body and spirit. A holiday favourite in Paris, it’s a fragrant blend of red wine, spices, and citrus, served hot and perfect for sipping as you wander through festive Christmas markets or admire twinkling lights. The base of vin chaud is typically a robust red wine, such as Merlot or Grenache, which is gently heated with a mix of spices like cinnamon, cloves, and star anise. Oranges and sometimes lemons are added for a bright, citrusy note, while sugar or honey provides a touch of sweetness. Some recipes even include a brandy or Grand Marnier splash for extra warmth. You’ll find vin chaud at nearly every Christmas market in Paris, where it’s served in festive cups or mugs. But you can also enjoy it sitting inside one of Paris’ iconic cafes.

Where to Find Mulled Wine in Paris?

The easiest place to assuredly find Vin Chaud in Paris is at one of the city’s many enchanting Christmas markets, like those at La Défense and the Tuileries Garden. For a more intimate experience, French bistros throughout the city advertise their ‘vin chaud’ on chalkboards on the street, highlighting spots to stop in for a warming cup while enjoying some relaxing Parisian ambiance. However, if you’re looking for a truly cozy and relaxing experience, I recommend La Méthode Restaurant in the Latin Quarter. Its warm and inviting interior, featuring stone walls and exposed wooden beams, exudes the charm of an authentic Parisian bistro, making it the perfect setting to savour a warm cup of mulled wine.

Foie Gras

In Paris, the holidays are a time to indulge in culinary delights that exude luxury and tradition, and foie gras is at the heart of many festive celebrations. This controversial delicacy, made from duck or goose liver, has been a symbol of French gastronomy for centuries and became a staple of French holiday tables as early as the 18th century, associated with lavish feasts and celebratory meals. Its buttery texture and exquisite taste pair beautifully with seasonal treats like fig jam, onion confit, or toasted brioche, creating a balanced savoury and sweet that feels particularly festive.

Where to Eat Foie Gras at Christmas in Paris

Comptoir de la Gastronomie, located in Paris’ 1st arrondissement, is a renowned establishment that seamlessly blends a gourmet delicatessen with a traditional French restaurant. With a history spanning over a century, it has become a cherished destination for locals and visitors seeking authentic French culinary experiences. The restaurant is mainly celebrated for its foie gras offerings, showcasing the delicacy in various forms that highlight its rich flavours and luxurious texture.

Canard & Champagne is a charming restaurant specializing in duck-centric dishes paired with fine champagnes. Typically paired with toasted bread and a sweet accompaniment like fig jam or onion confit, the foie gras here celebrates French culinary tradition.

Aligot

Indulgent dishes like Aligot, a decadent blend of creamy mashed potatoes, melted cheese, rich cream, and a touch of garlic, embody the comforting flavours of traditional French cuisine. Its velvety texture and warm, cheesy aroma make it an irresistible choice and are ideal for fending off the winter chill. Often served alongside savoury sausages, Aligot is a staple in rustic bistros across France, where it’s lovingly prepared to showcase its origins in the countryside of the Aveyron region.

Where to Eat Aligot at Christmas in Paris

You can find Aligot in the enchanting Christmas market in the Tuileries Gardens. The steaming mound of cheese with bread and sausage is one of my favourite things to enjoy, and it warms me from the inside out while I’m strolling through the twinkling lights of the market. If you’d rather enjoy your Aligot inside, Bistrot des Vosges in the heart of the Marais district is a must-visit. This charming bistro is celebrated for its traditional French dishes, especially its generous helpings of Aligot.

Oysters

Bulot Bulot, a charming oyster bar nestled between the vibrant neighbourhoods of Pigalle and Abbesses, is a must-visit. They specialize in fresh oysters primarily sourced from Normandy, and their warm and welcoming staff create an atmosphere that will make you feel like a local, celebrating with friends and family.

Bûche de Noël (Yule Log)

Bûche de Noël, or Yule Log, is a quintessential French Christmas dessert that has been a beloved holiday tradition for generations. Shaped like a log to symbolize the ancient custom of burning a yule log in the hearth during winter solstice celebrations, the classic bûche de Noël is a rolled sponge cake, typically filled with buttercream, mousse, or ganache, and then coated in more buttercream or chocolate to resemble the bark of a log. Pastry chefs often decorate it with intricate details like meringue mushrooms, sugar holly leaves, or edible glitter, turning each into a miniature edible masterpiece.

Many bakeries in Paris sell Bûche de Noël, with some offering large logs for the whole family, while others have slices or miniature versions. Upscale bakeries like Café Michalak, founded by the renowned pastry chef Christophe Michalak, are known for their annual tradition of creating new and innovative bûche de Noël creations. For instance, their ‘Bûche Marron’ is a chestnut-inspired delight designed to captivate the senses.

Raclette

Raclette is one of the more popular dishes you’ll fine in Paris at Christmas, especially as the chilly winter weather calls for cozy and hearty meals. Traditionally from the French and Swiss mountains, this Alpine dish is best eaten melted and scraped over a plate of boiled potatoes, charcuterie (cured meats like ham, salami, or prosciutto), and sometimes pickled vegetables like cornichons and onions to break up the richness of the dairy. Pair it with a glass of white wine, such as a crisp Savoie or a Riesling, for the ultimate winter comfort food experience.

Where to Eat Raclette at Christmas in Paris

At Paris’s festive markets, you can watch vendors skillfully melt wheels of cheese under heat lamps, the rich aroma drawing crowds eager for a taste. Popular markets like those at the Tuileries Garden, La Défense, and Saint-Germain-des-Prés are especially known for their raclette stands. But in Paris, you can also find restaurants dedicated to this dish, such as Les Marmottes. The restaurant’s interior features stone and wood accents, creating a cozy atmosphere reminiscent of Alpine retreats; Les Marmottes is renowned for its all-you-can-eat raclette! Diners can enjoy the interactive experience of melting their own cheese using tabletop grills, adding a fun and communal aspect to the meal.

French macarons are one of the most quintessential desserts to get in Paris. The delicate, almond-based cookies are beloved year-round, but during Christmastime, pâtisseries across the city elevate them with seasonal flavours and enchanting holiday designs.

At markets like those in the Tuileries Garden, La Défense, and Montmartre, a variety of vendors showcase macarons in unique seasonal flavours such as spiced gingerbread, peppermint, chestnut, and rich dark chocolate. These aren’t of the highest quality, but if you’re already in the market, the prices are reasonable and great to try. If you’re looking for the best Paris offers, I know people will tell you to go to Laduree, but I recommend the luxury flavours at Pierre Hermé. This year’s holiday assortment, part of the “Pierre par Pierre” collection, features eight unique creations, each with its own distinct flavour profile. For those seeking decadence, Aurore pairs rich chocolate with pecan praline, while Améthyste offers candied chestnut and blackcurrant’s sweet and tart harmony. More adventurous options include Églantine, Figue & Foie Gras, combining sweetbriar, fig, and foie gras for a savoury-sweet experience, and Truffe Noire & Pain Poilâne Grillé, featuring the earthy aroma of black truffle with toasted Poilâne bread!

Hot chocolate holds a special place in French culture, and its popularity can be traced back to the 17th century when it was introduced to the French court. While Angelina and Carette are often hailed as the go-to spots, the lineup to get a seat here can be hours long on busy days, and that is definitely not worth your time as there are many other authentic, less touristy spots where you can grab hot chocolate. A master chocolatier, Jean-Paul Hévin serves a variety of hot chocolates, from traditional to exotic blends featuring spices or unique cacao origins. His sleek boutiques also offer chocolates to take home. For a more relaxed experience, visit Coutume Café, a casual series of cafes across Paris where you can find hot chocolate made with high-quality ingredients, perfect for warming up during a winter stroll or the atmosphere inside one of their chic cafes.

Tuileries Garden Christmas Market

The Tuileries Garden Christmas Market, known as “La Magie de Noël” (The Magic of Christmas), is one popular holiday experience in Paris. Set in the historic Tuileries Garden near the Louvre Museum, this traditional European market features over 100 wooden chalets set amongst a full holiday fair complete with carnival rides, “ice rinks,” and live entertainment. Spread through the sprawling grounds are booths selling artisanal crafts and gourmet treats.

Visitors can savour French specialties like raclette, crêpes, and, my personal favourite, mulled wine. Mulled wine, or VinChaud, is the perfect thing to keep you warm while strolling through the beautifully lit market. The enormous sparkling Ferris wheel in the center of the market offers breathtaking views of the illuminated Champs-Élysées and the rest of Paris. Although this market is probably the most commercial, it is such a lively place to visit that is full of Christmas spirit!

Place Suisse Christmas Market

One of the Christmas Markets in Paris that I just happened to stumble upon was the market inside the Place Suisse. Although a Swiss-themed Christmas village might seem strange to visit in Paris during the holiday season, the location of this market, just outside the Eiffel Tower, on the esplanade of the Paris Aquarium, makes this ephemeral village all the most magical.

The village features a collection of wooden chalets reminiscent of a traditional Swiss alpine setting. Visitors can indulge in authentic Swiss specialties such as raclette, fondue, and charcuterie while enjoying a breathtaking view of the Eiffel Tower. The ambiance is further enhanced by festive decorations and a warm, inviting atmosphere, with fire pits dotted around the market to help warm you up on a cold winter’s night.

Abbesses Montmartre Christmas Market

The Abbesses Christmas Market, located in the heart of Montmartre at Place des Abbesses, offers a charming and intimate holiday experience. This Christmas market almost feels like a neighbourhood market, with locals meeting up with their children to drink wine and gossip while their children play on the capsule and munch on roasted chestnuts. With only about a dozen stalls, you get the best Christmas culinary delights, and the vendors offer traditional French treats such as escargot, champagne, pretzels and macarons, making you feel like a part of the local community.

La Défense Christmas Village

If you’re looking for the best shopping Christmas Market in Paris, you must head to La Défense Christmas Village. With over 300 chalets, this is the largest market in Paris. This isn’t my favourite location for a Christmas market in the rather bleak, modern business district, but the festive charlet helps transform the area into a festive wonderland. Visitors can browse an impressive array of handcrafted goods, including jewelry, home decor, textiles, and holiday ornaments, many made by skilled artisans.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés Christmas Market

The Saint-Germain-des-Prés Christmas Market is a cherished holiday event in Paris’s 6th arrondissement, adjacent to the historic Saint-Germain-des-Prés Church. The market is very small, but I liked the smaller selection of vendors as it didn’t feel too overwhelming. You needed everything: hot wine, raclette sandwiches, French onion soup, chewy nougat and delectable dried fruit. This market featured more food, making it a great place to grab a snack if you’re walking around the 6th arrondissement.

Square René Viviani

My personal favourite market was the Notre Dame Christmas Market, held annually in Square René Viviani. This market, though smaller in size compared to the Tuileries Garden Christmas Market, exudes a unique charm that is quintessentially Parisian. The quaint atmosphere and the charming vendors create a holiday experience that is truly one-of-a-kind. Set against the backdrop of the recently reopened Notre-Dame Cathedral, the market features over 40 chalets showcasing French craftsmanship, including jewelry, ceramics, textiles, and leather goods.

Saint-Michel Christmas Market

The Saint-Michel Christmas Market is a charming holiday market held in Place Saint-Michel, in Paris’s historic Latin Quarter. This intimate market features around 20 wooden chalets offering a variety of high-quality, responsibly made products from France, including artisanal crafts, jewelry, and festive decorations. The market is filled with the joy and excitement of the holiday season, and visitors can enjoy traditional French delicacies such as mulled wine, pretzels, and freshly made crêpes in this festive atmosphere. The market’s location near the iconic Saint-Michel Fountain adds to its picturesque setting, making it a must-visit during the holidays.

As the evening settles and the Eiffel Tower glimmers in the distance, there’s a special kind of magic that lingers in the Parisian air during Christmastime. The warmth of the markets, with their glowing lights and cheerful bustle, leaves your heart feeling fuller and your spirit lifted. Additionally, many museums and attractions have limited hours during the winter, opening later and closing earlier, so be sure to factor this into your plans.

Where to Stay: Choose Le Marais, Montmatre, or Saint-Germain-des-Prés accommodations for easy access to holiday activities and charming streets.

Dress for the Weather: December in Paris can be chilly and damp, with average temperatures ranging from 3°C to 7°C (37°F to 45°F). Pack a warm coat, scarf, gloves, and comfortable, waterproof shoes for exploring outdoor markets and festive streets. One of my favourite things to do in Paris in the Winter is to brave the cold, sitting outside on those iconic cafe tables, enjoying a hot glass of mulled wine or cup of coffee. If you’re dressed right, you’ll be able to soak in all the wonderful ambiance without the crowds you find at these cafes in the summer.

Daylight Hours: Days are shorter in December, with sunset as early as 4:50 PM. Plan outdoor activities and sightseeing earlier in the day to maximize natural light and save cozy indoor activities for the evening.

Book in Advance: Holiday dinners, Christmas concerts, and seasonal events can sell out quickly. Reserve tickets and restaurant tables well ahead of time to secure your spot.

Public Transport During the Holidays: The Metro runs on a modified schedule around Christmas and New Year’s, especially on the 24th, 25th, and 31st. Plan your journeys accordingly, or consider walking—it’s a great way to enjoy the festive lights.

Tuileries Garden Christmas Market

The Tuileries Garden Christmas Market, known as “La Magie de Noël” (The Magic of Christmas), is one popular holiday experience in Paris. Set in the historic Tuileries Garden near the Louvre Museum, this traditional European market features over 100 wooden chalets set amongst a full holiday fair complete with carnival rides, “ice rinks,” and live entertainment. Spread through the sprawling grounds are booths selling artisanal crafts and gourmet treats.

Visitors can savour French specialties like raclette, crêpes, and, my personal favourite, mulled wine. Mulled wine, or VinChaud, is the perfect thing to keep you warm while strolling through the beautifully lit market. The enormous sparkling Ferris wheel in the center of the market offers breathtaking views of the illuminated Champs-Élysées and the rest of Paris. Although this market is probably the most commercial, it is such a lively place to visit that is full of Christmas spirit!

Place Suisse Christmas Market

One of the Christmas Markets in Paris that I just happened to stumble upon was the market inside the Place Suisse. Although a Swiss-themed Christmas village might seem strange to visit in Paris during the holiday season, the location of this market, just outside the Eiffel Tower, on the esplanade of the Paris Aquarium, makes this ephemeral village all the most magical.

The village features a collection of wooden chalets reminiscent of a traditional Swiss alpine setting. Visitors can indulge in authentic Swiss specialties such as raclette, fondue, and charcuterie while enjoying a breathtaking view of the Eiffel Tower. The ambiance is further enhanced by festive decorations and a warm, inviting atmosphere, with fire pits dotted around the market to help warm you up on a cold winter’s night.

Abbesses Montmartre Christmas Market

The Abbesses Christmas Market, located in the heart of Montmartre at Place des Abbesses, offers a charming and intimate holiday experience. This Christmas market almost feels like a neighbourhood market, with locals meeting up with their children to drink wine and gossip while their children play on the capsule and munch on roasted chestnuts. With only about a dozen stalls, you get the best Christmas culinary delights, and the vendors offer traditional French treats such as escargot, champagne, pretzels and macarons, making you feel like a part of the local community.

La Défense Christmas Village

If you’re looking for the best shopping Christmas Market in Paris, you must head to La Défense Christmas Village. With over 300 chalets, this is the largest market in Paris. This isn’t my favourite location for a Christmas market in the rather bleak, modern business district, but the festive charlet helps transform the area into a festive wonderland. Visitors can browse an impressive array of handcrafted goods, including jewelry, home decor, textiles, and holiday ornaments, many made by skilled artisans.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés Christmas Market

The Saint-Germain-des-Prés Christmas Market is a cherished holiday event in Paris’s 6th arrondissement, adjacent to the historic Saint-Germain-des-Prés Church. The market is very small, but I liked the smaller selection of vendors as it didn’t feel too overwhelming. You needed everything: hot wine, raclette sandwiches, French onion soup, chewy nougat and delectable dried fruit. This market featured more food, making it a great place to grab a snack if you’re walking around the 6th arrondissement.

Square René Viviani

My personal favourite market was the Notre Dame Christmas Market, held annually in Square René Viviani. This market, though smaller in size compared to the Tuileries Garden Christmas Market, exudes a unique charm that is quintessentially Parisian. The quaint atmosphere and the charming vendors create a holiday experience that is truly one-of-a-kind. Set against the backdrop of the recently reopened Notre-Dame Cathedral, the market features over 40 chalets showcasing French craftsmanship, including jewelry, ceramics, textiles, and leather goods.

Saint-Michel Christmas Market

The Saint-Michel Christmas Market is a charming holiday market held in Place Saint-Michel, in Paris’s historic Latin Quarter. This intimate market features around 20 wooden chalets offering a variety of high-quality, responsibly made products from France, including artisanal crafts, jewelry, and festive decorations. The market is filled with the joy and excitement of the holiday season, and visitors can enjoy traditional French delicacies such as mulled wine, pretzels, and freshly made crêpes in this festive atmosphere. The market’s location near the iconic Saint-Michel Fountain adds to its picturesque setting, making it a must-visit during the holidays.

Paris becomes a dazzling wonderland during the holiday season, with spectacular Christmas lights illuminating its streets, squares, and landmarks. The entire city seems to sparkle with festive magic, and I’ve compiled a list of my favourite spots where you can experience the most enchanting displays of holiday lights!

Champs-Élysées

The grandest of all Parisian boulevards becomes even more dazzling during Christmas. The best time to visit is in the evening, from Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe, when the trees lining the Champs-Élysées are strung with sparkling lights in a synchronized display. This iconic stretch offers a breathtaking stroll, particularly after sunset.

Place Vendôme

Known for its luxurious boutiques and jewellers, Place Vendôme is a vision of understated elegance during Christmas. The towering trees and chic lighting make it one of the most refined holiday displays in the city.

Galeries Lafayette

Every holiday season, Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann unveils a jaw-dropping Christmas tree under its stunning glass dome, and it’s nothing short of magical. This annual tradition, dating back to 1976, has become a hallmark of Christmas in Paris, drawing visitors worldwide to marvel at its creativity and grandeur. The tree, a true work of art, is designed around a unique theme each year, mixing festive cheer with imaginative storytelling. It has whisked onlookers away in past years on whimsical journeys, like a globe-trotting adventure or a playful toy-inspired wonderland, inspiring awe and amazement.

Rue Saint-Dominique

Rue Saint-Dominique, located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, is a picturesque street known for its charming cafés, boutiques, and stunning views of the Eiffel Tower. During the Christmas season, this bustling avenue transforms into a festive delight, with twinkling lights and elegant decorations adorning its shops and lampposts that frame the Eiffel Tower in festive decor!

Rue Montorgueil

Rue Montorgueil is a bustling pedestrian street renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and rich culinary heritage. Lined with traditional boulangeries, fromageries, cafés, and specialty shops, it offers an authentic Parisian experience. During the Christmas season, Rue Montorgueil transforms into a festive wonderland. The street is adorned with enchanting holiday lights and decorations, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. Twinkling lights drape across the street, illuminating the historic facades and casting a magical glow over the bustling crowds. Shop windows are meticulously decorated with seasonal displays, adding to the street’s festive charm.

Moulin Rouge

The Moulin Rouge in Paris takes on an extra layer of glamour during the Christmas season, transforming into a festive spectacle that perfectly blends its iconic cabaret charm with holiday cheer. The exterior is a sight to behold, with its famous red windmill facade adorned with twinkling lights and elegantly decorated Christmas trees, creating a magical, wintry scene.

Avenue Montaigne

Avenue Montaigne, Paris’s high-fashion avenue, transforms into a shimmering promenade during the holiday season, with twinkling lights accentuating the lavish window displays of its designer boutiques. Strolling along this elegant street feels like stepping into a scene from a Parisian fairytale, especially in the evening when the festive glow creates a magical ambiance. The real showstopper, though, is the iconic view of the Eiffel Tower framed by the sparkling Christmas lights—a picture-perfect moment that captures the glamour and romance of Paris at Christmastime.

Galerie Vivienne

During the Christmas season, Galerie Vivienne in Paris transforms into a festive haven, blending its 19th-century elegance with holiday charm. The passage’s iconic glass roof allows natural light to mingle with the warm glow of Christmas lights, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Twinkling lights drape gracefully along the gallery’s arches and shopfronts, highlighting the intricate mosaic floors and neoclassical architecture.

Montmartre

The village-like charm of Montmartre is enhanced by twinkling lights during the holiday season. Stroll through the decorated streets around Place des Abbesses and enjoy views of the city sparkling below.

Le Marais

The historic neighbourhood of Le Marais offers a delightful and understated charm during the holiday season, making it a serene yet magical destination for those seeking festive lights without the crowds. Its quaint cobblestone streets and picturesque squares are gently illuminated with elegant holiday displays. The decorations here embrace a more subtle, refined aesthetic, with twinkling lights strung across shopfronts and small clusters of glowing ornaments adorning hidden courtyards. Wandering through Le Marais during the holidays feels like stepping back in time, and its quiet, romantic ambiance makes it an ideal spot for an evening stroll.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Stroll through this delightful neighbourhood, where charming streets and cozy cafes are elegantly dressed in holiday lights and decorations. This area beautifully showcases the essence of Parisian Christmas decor—understated yet sophisticated, with natural elements adding a touch of timeless chic to its festive ambiance.

Savour Festive Dining and Holiday Treats

French food is one of the best kinds of cuisine to enjoy during winter. It’s warm and rich, and a cozy French bistro is the perfect place to cozy up on a cold winter’s day. In addition to the traditional winter French specialties, Paris offers a unique array of Christmas dishes that are synonymous with the holiday spirit, making it a perfect destination for a festive culinary experience.

Marrons Chauds (Roasted Chesnuts)

The song ‘Chesnut Roasting on an Open Fire’ should have been written about Paris, because no matter where you seem to be in this city, there are literally roasted chestnuts (marrons chauds) filling the air with that iconic warm, nutty aroma. At Christmas, vendors can be found across Paris, often near Christmas markets, busy shopping streets, and landmarks like the Champs-Élysées or Montmartre. The chestnuts are roasted over open coals, filling the air with a toasty, earthy aroma that feels like the holidays in every bite. They’re typically sold in paper cones, making them a perfect snack to enjoy while strolling through festive markets or admiring holiday lights. Not only are they delicious, but they also serve as a handy warmer for cold hands on chilly December days. Roasted chestnuts are a simple, nostalgic treat embodying a Parisian Christmas’s charm and tradition.  

Vin Chaud, French mulled wine

Vin Chaud, or French mulled wine, is a quintessential winter drink that warms body and spirit. A holiday favourite in Paris, it’s a fragrant blend of red wine, spices, and citrus, served hot and perfect for sipping as you wander through festive Christmas markets or admire twinkling lights. The base of vin chaud is typically a robust red wine, such as Merlot or Grenache, which is gently heated with a mix of spices like cinnamon, cloves, and star anise. Oranges and sometimes lemons are added for a bright, citrusy note, while sugar or honey provides a touch of sweetness. Some recipes even include a brandy or Grand Marnier splash for extra warmth. You’ll find vin chaud at nearly every Christmas market in Paris, where it’s served in festive cups or mugs. But you can also enjoy it sitting inside one of Paris’ iconic cafes.

Aligot

Indulgent dishes like Aligot, with its blend of mashed potatoes, melted cheese, cream, and garlic, are perfect for warding off the winter chill and leaving you feeling incredibly satisfied. This dish often served with sausages, is a staple in rustic bistros and feels like the perfect holiday meal!

Oysters

Oysters (huîtres) are incredibly popular in Paris—and across France—during Christmas and New Year celebrations. They are considered a festive delicacy and are a staple on holiday menus. Parisians typically enjoy raw oysters served on a bed of crushed ice with a simple squeeze of lemon, a mignonette sauce made of vinegar and shallots, or a dash of Tabasco. Accompanying them with a glass of chilled white wine or champagne is a cherished tradition, adding a touch of elegance to the holiday feast. Despite oysters seeming like something you’d only find in fine dining restaurants, at Christmas, you’ll find freshly shucked oysters at many Parisian seafood bars, brasseries, and even outside in holiday markets.

Bûche de Noël (Yule Log)

Bûche de Noël, or Yule Log, is a quintessential French Christmas dessert that has been a beloved holiday tradition for generations. Shaped like a log to symbolize the ancient custom of burning a yule log in the hearth during winter solstice celebrations, the classic bûche de Noël is a rolled sponge cake, typically filled with buttercream, mousse, or ganache, and then coated in more buttercream or chocolate to resemble the bark of a log. Pastry chefs often decorate it with intricate details like meringue mushrooms, sugar holly leaves, or edible glitter, turning each into a miniature edible masterpiece. Many bakeries sell large logs big enough for the whole family, but slices or miniature versions of the Bûche de Noël can also be found in upscale bakeries all over Paris!

Raclette

Raclette is popular in Paris during Christmas, especially as the chilly winter weather calls for cozy and hearty meals. Traditionally from the French and Swiss mountains, this Alpine dish has become a beloved winter favourite among Parisians. Raclette cheese is best eaten melted and scraped over a plate of boiled potatoes, charcuterie (cured meats like ham, salami, or prosciutto), and sometimes pickled vegetables like cornichons and onions to break up the richness of the dairy. The cheese’s rich, creamy texture and nutty flavour make it a warming and indulgent treat best for Christmas. Pair it with a glass of white wine, such as a crisp Savoie or a Riesling, for the ultimate winter comfort food experience.

Pain d’épices

Pain d’épices (spiced bread) is a cherished baked good in Paris at Christmastime. This gingerbread-like loaf, traditionally made with honey and a mix of warm spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and anise, is a festive staple that evokes the cozy flavours of the holiday season.

You’ll often find pain d’épices at Christmas markets throughout Paris, where it is sold in charming stalls, sometimes in individually wrapped slices or as whole loaves. Some vendors also offer decorative versions shaped like stars or hearts, making them perfect for gifting or enjoying as a festive snack.

French macarons are elegant, almond-based cookies beloved year-round, but during Christmastime, pâtisseries across the city elevate them with seasonal flavours and enchanting holiday designs. It gained iconic status thanks to Marie Antoinette, who adored drinking hot chocolate and even brought her personal chocolatier to Versailles. Unlike the sugary versions common elsewhere, the French take their hot chocolate seriously, favouring a rich, velvety drink made from high-quality melted chocolate and cream—a decadent treat fit for royalty.

During Christmas, sipping hot chocolate becomes an essential Parisian experience, offering warmth and indulgence as you explore the city’s festive markets and streets. While Angelina and Carette are often hailed as the go-to spots, the lineup to get a seat can be hours long, and that is definitely not worth your time as there are many other authentic, less touristy spots where you can grab hot chocolate. A master chocolatier, Jean-Paul Hévin serves a variety of hot chocolates, from traditional to exotic blends featuring spices or unique cacao origins. His sleek boutiques also offer chocolates to take home. Coutume Café is a casual series of cafes across Paris where you can find hot chocolate made with care and high-quality ingredients, perfect for warming up during a winter stroll or enjoying one of their chic cafes.

During the holiday season, churches like Notre Dame and Saint-Sulpice come alive with the spirit of Christmas, showcasing grand nativity scenes that are truly works of art. But the real gem here is La Grande Épicerie de Paris, the store’s world-famous food hall. It’s overflowing with gourmet delights during the holidays—think artisanal chocolates, decadent cheeses, fine wines, and seasonal specialties. Step into the past at À la Mère de Famille, Paris’s oldest sweet shop, where Christmas is a confectionery dream. Established in 1761, this historic boutique is decked out in festive decor, creating a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. Shelves overflow with handcrafted chocolates, candied fruits, and traditional French treats like marrons glacés (candied chestnuts), all wrapped in elegant holiday packaging. Whether indulging in a sweet moment for yourself or selecting a gift box for someone special, this charming shop, steeped in history, is a must-visit for holiday magic.

Located on Île de la Cité, this flower and bird market turns into a holiday wonderland in December. Stalls brim with fragrant pine garlands, handmade wreaths, and petite Christmas trees perfect for decorating Parisian apartments. Unique gifts like hand-carved ornaments and botanical arrangements make it a delightful spot to find thoughtful, nature-inspired presents.
