So, for today’s deep dive into Christmas traditions, we explore Edwardian Christmas’s sumptuous feasts, heartwarming traditions, and opulence that defined the era. Whether you’re a history buff, a culinary enthusiast, or just searching for some old-world Christmas charm, join us on this nostalgic journey.

The Edwardian Era

The Edwardian era, named after King Edward VII, began in 1901, spanning the next ten years. It was a brief but influential time in British history characterized by extravagance, social transformation, and technical progress. This period, which followed the Victorian era, was marked by contrasts. The aristocracy’s opulent lives, complete with garden parties and elaborate balls, and the notable social movements, such as the suffragettes, who fought for women’s rights.

Decorating the Edwardian Home

Walking into an Edwardian home at Christmas, you’ll be greeted with holly, ivy, and mistletoe. These natural greens were used to make garlands to adorn door frames, stair banisters, and mantelpieces. These festive plants offered a sense of nature indoors during the cold winter. Red berries provide colour to the decorations and are preserved throughout Christmas with salt or mountain ash.

Handmade decorations were all the rage. Families would come together to make paper chains and other do-it-yourself cloth or paper decorations. These personal touches mirror the Edwardian value placed on handmade skills. A big part of the festive ambiance was created by candles. Candles were utilized not only on the Christmas tree but also as table centrepieces, on windowsills, and throughout the elegant house, all the more comforting by the relaxing glow.

Compared to the Victorian era, Edwardian Christmas decorations tended to have a more subdued colour palette that emphasized natural greens, holly berry reds, and warm light. More subdued accents of gold and silver were also utilized with the wider availability of gold and silver paint.

The Arts and Crafts Movement, which placed an emphasis on handcrafted items brought the tradition of wreath-making back into the spotlight. While the Victorians may have opted to have these made for them, the Edwardians took it on as an activity using materials from around their homes to createstunning doorway decorations.

The Edwardian Christmas Tree

An essential component of Edwardian Christmas households was the Christmas tree. Beginning in the Victorian era, the Edwardians continued this German tradition. These trees were frequently positioned in the middle of the house,, but when decorating their tree, the Edwardians were exceedingly particular. A tree that was decked before Christmas Eve was considered very gauche.

Edwardian Christmas Lights

Candles were the main source of Christmas tree lighting prior to the widespread use of electric lights. These were fastened to the branches using clips or holders. The tree had a magical aura from the flickering candlelight, but it needed to be constantly watched to prevent any dangerous fires.

The new technology of electric Christmas lights was a luxury enjoyed by a few wealthy Edwardians. Thomas Edison’s assistant Edward H. Johnson installed the first known electrically lit Christmas tree in 1882. However, because of the expense, power was not yet widely available in Edwardian households. These early electric tree lights came in a variety of designs, some of which were meant to preserve traditional aesthetics by seeming like candles. Others adopted the new technology in various forms and hues.

Edwardian Christmas Decorations

The tree was decked out with handcrafted garlands, tinsel, and glass ornaments. Compared to contemporary tinsel, Edwardian tinsel appeared heavier and more draped because it was constructed from thin strips of lead or silver. During the Edwardian era, glass ornaments were highly detailed and frequently imported from Germany. They reflected the era’s preoccupation with innovation and workmanship, coming in a variety of shapes such as fruits, animals, and other whimsical motifs.

Dresdens were a popular Edwardian decoration, originating from Dresden, Germany. These ornaments are traditionally made from embossed and pressed cardboard, often referred to as “Dresden cardboard.” What sets them apart is their elaborate detail and the variety of shapes they come in, including animals, stars, fish, and even intricate objects like carriages or ships.

Edwardian Christmas trees were frequently strung with beaded garlands made from glass beads, dried fruit or gold paper. Fairy figurines were a characteristic Edwardian touch, frequently with delicate features and translucent wings. These were occasionally positioned atop the tree in place of the more customary angel or star.

The Edwardian love of nature was reflected in the occasional addition of natural elements to the tree, such as pine cones, nuts, and berries. Colour and texture were added using ribbons and bows. Particularly silk and satin ribbons were well-liked options since they frequently complemented the tree’s general color palette.

Traditional Edwardian Christmas Feasts

The festive feast that awaited Edwardians at home after Christmas Church services was an elaborate event. A variety of delicacies would be arranged on the table, showcasing the period’s luxury and grandeur. Edwardians LOVED to eat. Thus, one of the main features of their Christmas dinners was an abundance of courses—up to nine at times—that served as a display of their wealth.

Edwardian Starters

Rich, filling soups, such as creamy vegetable soup, consommé, and turtle soup, were popular. Turtle soup—yes, you read that correctly. Traditionally, the soup was made with the meat of the green sea turtle, which was a prized delicacy owing to the expensive and scarcity of the ingredients. Therefore, having turtle soup on your table symbolizes prestige and wealth. When real turtle became too expensive or unavailable, imitation turtle soup—made from veal or calf’s head—was offered as a more affordable substitute. Edwardian Goose of Turkey for Christmas?

The Christmas goose, inherited from Victorian tradition, was central to the Edwardian Christmas dinner, prized for its juicy, flavourful meat and often the highlight of festive meals. However, Edwardian middle and upper classes began to prefer turkey, a newer choice for British Christmas feasts. The larger turkey gained popularity in wealthier households, symbolizing the era’s penchant for luxury, becoming a symbol of status and the times’ growing affluence.

While food distribution throughout Europe was increasing, most households could only afford local produce. Therefore, the ingredients features on the table frequently consisted of seasonal vegetables that were readily available around the county. Winter produce included carrots, potatoes, brussels sprouts, apples, and potatoes.

Traditionally, the goose or turkey, was stuffed with onion and sage and slow-roasted to perfection, creating a scent that filled homes with the spirit of the holidays. Often times chestnuts were added to the stuffing for a very rich and earthy flavour. Almost everything was prepared in a way that highlighted butter and cream, emphasizing the decadence of the era.

Exquisite feasts also feature a fish course, usually with oysters, smoked salmon, or other seafood. The new invention of canned fish, such as salmon, was used by families that could not afford freshly caught fish. They tried to hide the canned fish’s taste by adding it to recipes like salmon moose. But one can imagine there wasn’t much anyone could do to camouflage that taste…

Edwardian Desserts

A classic Christmas plum pudding was a must-have for any Edwardian celebration. Cooked with suet, almonds, dried fruits, and spices, this deep, rich pudding was typically cooked well in advance and matured over December. The inclusion of brandy and rum in the mix helped its preservation during that time. Traditionally, the mixture would include a silver coin, and whoever received the cake slice with the coin was destined for good luck in the coming year. When the pudding was ready to be served, it was steamed for several hours, which allowed the flavours to meld and deepen. This preparation method resulted in a moist, flavourful pudding despite it being made a month earlier. It was typically served with a sprig of holly on top and doused in brandy before being flamboyantly set alight at the table, creating a dramatic and festive presentation.

Fruit cake was a variation of the traditional Christmas pudding. Frosted and embellished with intricate motifs made of almond paste, it was often a centrepiece of the dessert table. Mince pies were another essential of the Edwardian Christmas dessert spread. Back then, the pastries were made with mincemeat, beef or venison, a concoction of chopped dried fruit, distilled spirits and spices.

Edwardian Christmas Drinks

The Edwardian era was a time of relative prosperity and peace before World War I, and the opulence of the Christmas celebrations, including the drinks, reflected this. A perennial favourite, mulled wine was made by warming red wine with spices like cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg, often sweetened with sugar and fortified with brandy. This drink was a winter staple, offering warmth and cheer during the festive season. Punches, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, were famous at Christmas gatherings. They were often made with a base of fruit juices and spices and could include spirits like rum or brandy. The communal nature of punch made it popular at parties. Punch was often served from a large bowl, which, in wealthier households, was an opulent silver design that became a feature of the dining room.

A traditional holiday drink, eggnog was made with eggs, sugar, milk or cream and spiked with brandy, rum, or whisky. It was particularly popular in England and America and symbolized festivity and celebration. Port and sherry were fortified wines that the Edwardians found fashionable, but spirits like whiskey and brandy were mainstays in the Edwardian homes.

Gift Giving in the Edwardian Times

Christmas in the Edwardian era was a season of giving. Presents were less elaborate than those of today but exchanged with just as much love and affection. These could be modest personal trinkets, books, and handcrafted goods. Giving was more about the intention behind the gift than its actual worth. Because they added a personal touch, handcrafted presents were greatly valued. These could be hand-sewn garments, knit scarves, or embroidered handkerchiefs. Additionally, well-liked items were baked foods and jams created at home.

The love of literature of the time was reflected in the widespread gifting of books. Children’s literature, poetry collections, and classic novels were some of the most popular gifts. Toys like wooden soldiers, dolls, tea, or train sets would also be found under the Christmas tree. Still, compared to contemporary toys, these were typically simpler in design and often also handmade.

Edwardian Adult Gifts

Adults liked to receive jewellery such as lockets, cufflinks, and brooches. Frequently, these objects featured a customized element, like initials or a memorable date inscribed on them. Gifts that were useful, like hats, handkerchiefs, or gloves, were a favourite item to be exchanged.

Particularly for individuals who enjoyed music, music boxes or tiny instruments like flutes or harmonicas were treasured possessions. For the women of the household, gifts like stationery sets, fountain pens, and inkwells were popular in the days of handwritten letters. Fragrances, scented soaps, and grooming sets, particularly as grooming and personal cleanliness grew in importance within societal conventions, were some of the more “trendy” gifts unwrapped in the Edwardian household.

Edwardian Christmas Cards

Edwardian Christmas cards were both mailed and exchanged as gifts on Christmas day. They were frequently exquisitely designed and acted almost like a work of art to be admired. Art Nouveau was the most popular movement then, and its focus on organic shapes and flowing lines found its way into the designs of many Edwardian Christmas cards. Flower and nature motifs were often the centre point of the card, with colour schemes of rich reds, greens and golds. In contrast to Victorian cards, the use of colour was more muted and leaned toward a more sophisticated look.

Illustrations frequently included placid wintertime vistas, settings covered in snow, holly trees, mistletoe, and birds such as robins. Heartwarming images of families and kids having fun in the snow brought forth themes of coziness and family.

Edwardian Christmas Entertainment

Christmas celebrations in the Edwardian era became to involved more and more music in the home, rather than just in the church. Around the piano, friends and family would congregate to sing holiday tunes and carols. Carolers frequently made house calls and public appearances, spreading the holiday cheer via song, a tradition I long for today!

Edwardian Pantos and Playing Cards

One of the most popular Christmas activities was going to a play or pantomime, especially for people who lived in or close to cities.

At Christmas parties, Edwardians gathered indoors to play a variety of parlour games. Popular games included word and guessing games, snapdragon (a game using burning brandy and raisins), charades, and blind man’s bluff.

During the Edwardian Christmas, storytelling was still a popular tradition. Families would get together to hear stories, most of which had morality, Christmas, or winter themes. Read alouds of traditional Christmas tales, such as Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” also took place around this time.

Edwardian Christmas Fashion

Edwardian Christmas fashion reflected the elegance and sophistication of the era, often with a unique festive touch. Given the winter season, outerwear was essential. Women wore long coats or fur-lined capes, while men donned heavy overcoats. Ladies wore floor-length gowns from luxurious fabrics like silk, satin, or velvet. These gowns often had a fitted bodice and a full skirt, sometimes with a train for more formal occasions. Consistent with the fashion of the time, dresses had high necklines and long sleeves. Lace or beadwork often adorned the neck and cuffs for added elegance. A defining feature of Edwardian women’s fashion was the S-shaped corset, which created an hourglass figure with a pronounced bust and hips.

Christmas attire often featured rich colours such as deep reds, greens, gold, and creams. Gowns might be embellished with lace, embroidery, or ribbons and include festive motifs such as holly embroidery or accessories in Christmas colours. Accessories included elegant gloves, ornate hats or hairpieces adorned with feathers or jewels, and fine jewelry like brooches, necklaces, and earrings.

Edwardian Men’s and Children’s Fashion

Men often wore formal suits, typically a tailcoat for evening events or a more relaxed lounge suit for less formal gatherings. A waistcoat (vest) was commonly worn under the coat, along with a cravat or tie, often in silk or another fine material. Top hats were worn for formal occasions, while bowler or fedora hats were more common for casual settings. Young girls wore dresses similar in style to their mothers’, though less elaborate. These often featured lace, bows, and sashes. Boys wore miniature versions of men’s suits with vests and ties.

The Edwardians were truly masters of celebration, infusing every aspect of the holiday season with artistry and sophistication. From the sumptuous Christmas feasts to the handcrafted charm of festive cards and decorations, each tradition we’ve delved into reveals their penchant for detail and a love for the grandeur of the season. The majesty of their Christmas trees, the intimacy of family gatherings, and the communal joy found in wreath-making sessions all underscore the importance they placed on togetherness and the spirit of the holidays. Incorporating these timeless traditions into our modern celebrations, we’re not only paying homage to the past but also keep the essence of an Edwardian Christmas alive!

But never pass up the chance to walk up and see if there have been any cancellations, especially at Christmas. You never know when someone’s plans will fall through, and you can swoop in to grab those opportunities.

To start your Perfect Christmas Eve in London, we need to grab a festive breakfast! As our second stop on the tour is located in Bloomsbury, one of the best places to start your morning is at Fortitude Bakehouse. Fortitude Bakehouse is one of the city’s finest artisanal bakeries tucked away in a charming corner of the city. Fortitude Bakehouse takes its craft seriously. Their bread, from sourdough to ciabatta, is made using traditional techniques, high-quality ingredients, and a dash of innovation. But it’s not just about the bread. Fortitude Bakehouse also boasts a delectable selection of pastries that are as pleasing to the eye as they are to the taste buds. From flaky croissants to fruit-filled danishes, these sweet and savoury treats are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or an anytime snack.

Charles Dickens Museum

After grabbing your sweet treats and a large coffee, take a walk east along Guilford Street, turning down Doughty Street towards the bright red door at #48. This old Georgian townhouse was the former London home of legendary author Charles Dickens. Today, it has been preserved and transformed into the Charles Dickens Museum.

Inside, the museum is dedicated to celebrating the life and work of the renowned Victorian novelist. Dickens lived with his family from 1837 to 1839. This was a significant period in Dickens’s life as he wrote several of his most famous works during his residence in this house, including Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby.

Visitors to the museum on Christmas Eve can take a guided tour of the meticulously restored and furnished rooms of the Dickens family home. And at Christmas, you’ll be in awe of Victoria’s Christmas decorations that cover the house. Holly garlands twist up the staircase, and red ribbons are tied on every little surface around the house.

The decor gives guests an idea of how Victorians would have been getting ready to celebrate Christmas. Just like many characters from Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. On Christmas Eve Day, all guests to the house will receive a free mince pie and mulled wine (or soft drinks for the kids). 

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

For lunch, take a walk along Grays Inn Road to find yourself at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub. Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese boasts a history that stretches back several centuries. The current building dates to 1667. The pub is known for its long association with literary and journalistic figures, and it has been a favoured haunt of many famous writers, including the one and only Charles Dickens. As well as Mark Twain and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The pub retains its historic and atmospheric charm with its low ceilings, wooden beams, dark wood panelling, and cozy, interconnected rooms. It offers a glimpse into the kind of taverns common in 17th-century London. One of the most striking features of Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is its multiple fireplaces, which are especially inviting during the colder months.

While the pub doesn’t go all out with its decorations, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese incorporates traditional Christmas celebrations into its festive menu. Everything from chicken & apricot terrine, hand-carved turkey, or red onion and chestnut roast for vegetarians. Be sure to end it all with Christmas pudding for dessert.

Somerset House

From Fleet Street, walk west across the Strand toward Somerset House. The Duke of Somerset once owned the property, but today, the building is often used to host events centred around arts and education. At Christmas, the square in front of Somerset House is transformed into a giant fairytale-like ice skating rink. A massive 40-foot twinkling Christmas tree stands watch over the skaters.

Be sure to book tickets for skating, especially on Christmas Eve, well in advance. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to enjoy an iconic Christmas activity set in a beautiful historic London landmark. The best way to enjoy Christmas ever in London.

Southbank Centre Winter Market

After all that skating, it’s time to warm up with some mulled wine, cider or hot chocolate. For this, we need to make our way across Waterloo Bridge to the Southbank Centre Winter Market. This traditional alpine-style Christmas market is made all the more atmospheric by its’ gorgeous location set along the famed Thames River. Plus, you also get stunning views of the London Eye above you as you peruse the goods in the market.

Over 90 wooden chalets lined the edge of the Southbank, covered in a canopy of thousands of twinkle lights. At the edge of the market, a vintage carousel delights young and old as it spins around playing Christmas tunes.

Wandering the stalls here, you can find everything from festive indulgences to Christmas street food and handmade arts and crafts. My favourite stall was the unique map seller. Buying a vintage map of London feels like the perfect gift to bring home as a souvenir of your London travels. Winter classics like raclette, chocolate-covered marshmallow kisses, dutch pancakes, and even warm cheese toasties can be found as you stroll.

Trafalgar Square

Walk back over the Golden Jubilee Bridge to the famous Trafalgar Square. Here, you’ll find another bustling Christmas market next to the National Gallery and Nelson’s Column. The location adds so much to the atmosphere and overall charm of the market. The market features a variety of stalls and vendors, offering a wide range of holiday-themed foods and gifts. You can find traditional Christmas decorations, ornaments, winter clothing items, funky jewellery and London souvenirs.

But we aren’t here for the market per se, but for the music. Every day in December there are carol performances between 4 pm and 8 pm. Over 40 carol groups gather here throughout the holiday season to bring festive cheer to the onlookers and raise money for charitable organizations. You see them out in full force on Christmas Eve, getting everyone excited for Christmas mornings.

Dishoom Covent Garden

If you are in the mood for something a little different but still a staunchly popular place in London to eat on Christmas Eve, head up the road to Dishoom Covent Garden. Dishoom is a series of restaurants known for their homage to the Irani cafés of Bombay. Stepping inside, you’ll be immediately enveloped in nostalgic décor that transports you to the bustling streets of Bombay. At Christmas, the restaurant is adorned with festive decorations, stars hanging from the ceiling and a glowing, warm, inviting atmosphere.

Dishoom offers a special Christmas Feast menu for the holiday season. This menu features a blend of traditional Indian flavours with a festive twist. Dishes include Turkey Raan (marinated and slow-cooked turkey leg infused with Indian spices and flavours), tenderstem broccoli, chilli sprouts, spiced cranberry chutney and Mince Pie Kulfi. Indian food is important to the fabric of London’s food scene, and Dishoom is one of the most iconic locations to try this cuisine.

Covent Garden

After dinner, explore Covent Garden by heading to the old Covent Garden Market. This historic marketplace is steeped in centuries of tradition. But at Christmas time, it is one of the most festive centres in London. The market’s elegant Piazza, adorned with neoclassical architecture and lively street performances, is brimming with twinkle lights, Christmas trees, oversized wreaths and the smell of mulled wine emanating in the air.

Also, outside the Piazza, you’ll always find some special exhibitions. In years past, there was a special Frozen Christmas Village. And last year, Dolce and Gabanna set up a multicoloured light display that made for awe-inspiring photos!

Apple Market

Covent Garden’s Apple Market dates back to the 17th century when it was a bustling fruit and vegetable market. Today, it houses a crafts and antiques market. Walking inside, you will be overwhelmed by the fantastical giant silver and gold disco ornaments hanging from the ceiling. Creating a kaleidoscope of lights reflecting off every surface. Oversized mistletoe chandeliers also dangle above, inviting romantic Christmas kisses.

Covent Garden Christmas Tree

You’ll find the mammoth Covent Garden Christmas tree outside the Apple Market! This Christmas tree is the largest hand-picked tree in all of London. In addition to this, the tree was grown at the same tree farm where the Royal family gets their Christmas trees. So it’s perhaps the poshest tree in London as well! It takes organizers over 300 hours to decorate the tree. And they even used a cherry picker to get those baubles to the top.

The area outside near the Christmas Tree is where visitors can get the chance to see “snow” falling in London. The snow falls every hour on the hour, so arrive accordingly. Sure, it might be fake snow made of soap, but how everyone erupts with delights really is the cherry on top of Christmas Eve celebrations.

Mayfair’s Christmas lights

From Covent Garden, we’re going to take the scenic route towards Westminster via Piccadilly Street. Make your way west towards the famous Piccadilly Circus. Although this intersection is always one of the busiest in London, it’s worth stopping here to look up at Regent Street.

Regent Street

Named after King George, the Prince Regent who reigned over England from 1820 to 1830, this sweeping road features ornate facades and regal terraces, which make it a timeless icon of London’s urban magnificence. The Regent Street lights are my favourite Christmas light display in the whole city. Soaring above the passersby are these giant “spirits” with sparkling wings. Many people refer to these as angels, but they are, in fact, officially called the spirits of Regent Street.

The decorations were inspired by historic Christmas lights displayed initially on Regent Street that featured traditional angels playing trumpets. The illuminations were created with the input of the Crown since Regent Street is owned by the Royal Family, and they must approve everything. The spirits are made up of over 300,000 lights. Their golden 17-meter wingspan reaches across the entire length of the street. Watching over delighted shoppers. The lights glitter and flash, giving the effect of the fluttering wings. Almost as if they could simply take off at any moment.

Fortnum & Mason

Walking along Picadilly, you’ll pass the iconic Fortnum & Mason department store. Fortnum & Mason goes all out on their Christmas displays during the holidays. Their award-winning window displays bring smiles to everyone passing them. They transform the facade into a giant advent calendar, each exterior window numbered from one to twenty-five, decorated with lush garlands and cheerful twinkle lights. As the month passes, the numbers are illuminated individually, like doors opening on a massive advent calendar.

Bond Street

Just across from Fortnum’s is Old Bond Street. Bond Street is home to some of the most prestigious and expensive shops like Tiffany & Co, Sotheby’s and Bonhams. The Christmas installations along Bond Street are made to look larger-than-life! Framing the entire street are these twinkling designs made to emulate peacock feathers.

The peacock feathers honour a group called the Bond Street Loungers, who, in 1820, became well-known for their fabulous fashions. They often wore expensive wigs and were seen strutting up and down Bond Street as if they owned it. They were also often called the “peacocks,” and the Christmas lights shine on to commemorate their daring fashions.

Above the intersections are these amazing crowns that incorporate those same peacock designs but so subtly that only those in the know will see them.

Many of the high-end shops on the street go ALL OUT. Cartier, Fenwick, Dior, Stellar McCartney and Ralph Lauren spend thousands on decking out this exterior facade for the holidays. Despite being some of London’s most expensive shops, you don’t need to spend a dime to enjoy their beautiful lighting displays.

St. James Street

Make your way down St. James’s Street, stopping in front of Lock & Co. Hatters and Berry Bros. & Rudd. These historic stops often have some of the best exterior Christmas displays; if they are still open, you should consider popping inside!

St James’s Park

From St. James Street, walk along Marlborough Road, and cut through St James’s Park. St. James’s Park is situated in the City of Westminster, bounded by Buckingham Palace to the west, The Mall (a grand ceremonial avenue) to the north, Horse Guards to the east, and Birdcage Walk to the south. St. James’s Park has a rich history from the early 17th century. It was originally developed as a deer park for King James I. But later, it was transformed into a formal garden by King Charles II. The park has retained much of its historical layout and character to this day.

The park is known for its stunning landscape, featuring a large lake, tree-lined avenues, meadows, flowerbeds, and well-manicured lawns. Even in the winter, the lake is home to various waterfowl, including swans and ducks. Late at night, St. James’s Park is a great place for a leisurely walk as it is such a peaceful and contemplative place to wander on Christmas Eve.

The Feathers Pub

Wile the night away and warm up before the evening Christmas service inside one of my favourite Westminster pubs, the Feathers. The Feathers Pub is a traditional British pub known for its classic British pub ambiance. Even on a cold day, you can find a warm and welcoming atmosphere inside.

The Christmas decor here is unrivalled. I love how the staff seem to get into the Christmas spirit and decorate every inch of the bar with festive baubles and twinkling Christmas trees. Having a Christmas Eve pint here feels like having a drink with friends, even if you’re travelling solo.

If you’re still hungry, consider ordering one of their award-winning hand-made meat pies. But at this time of night, the best thing to have is a perfectly poured cask ale, a glass of fine wine.

Westminster Abbey Christmas Eve Service

Even if you’re not religious, I highly recommend attending the Westminster Abbey Christmas Eve Service. Westminster Abbey has a rich history dating back centuries. Throughout the years, many important royal events have taken place here for coronations and funerals. Most recently, it was here that King Charles III was crowned. But every year, since its construction, there has been a Christmas Eve service.

The Christmas Eve services include singing Christmas hymns, music from the Abbey Choir, a sermon and Holy Communion. The service will last approximately an hour and a half. I didn’t participate in the communion, and you can absolutely sit this out if you prefer to attend the service more as on onlooker than a participant. But always remember to be respectful and remember no photos are allowed during services.

Booking is required in advance to get your tickets. Tickets are free, but you must book in advance as seating is limited. Tickets will be made available in mid-November. But every year, limited tickets are available on the day. If you don’t have an advanced ticket, arrive about an hour before the start of service and line up in the queue. 

After the service, you’ll exit on the Christmas streets of London. All public transport will be shut down as the service runs after midnight. This includes buses, trams, London Underground and London Overground trains. Plan around this in advance, as you’ll either walk home, take a taxi or Uber, or hop on an electric scooter or bike rental. If your home base is closer to St. Paul’s Cathedral, you might consider attending their Christmas Eve service instead.

Map of the Perfect Christmas Weekend in London

Friday Night

Upon Arriving in London, the very first thing you want to do is hit the town and soak in the beauty and glamour of London’s Christmas Lights! A walk around central London will allow you to experience the city’s holiday spirit, enjoy beautiful decorations, and immerse yourself in seasonal magic. Don’t forget to bundle up and wear comfortable shoes!

Trafalgar Square

The best place to start is in Trafalgar Square. Trafalgar Square is perhaps the most famous public square in the UK. It is in the centre of Westminster, just steps from many of the most iconic buildings in London. The square was built in the 19th century to honour the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. During this battle, the British navy captured a difficult victory against the Napoleonic off the coast of Cape Trafalgar. Nelson’s Column stands in the centre of the square. It towers over the rest of the courtyard at 169 feet tall and is guarded by four lion statues.

While the column is usually the tallest structure in the square, the colossal Christmas tree installed in the yard gives the column a run for its money. Since 1947, Norway has gifted the city of London with regal Norwegian spruce. The first tree was a gift to thank the British for their support during World War II. They decorate the tree in a simplistic Norwegian style, with only a few lights strung vertically yearly. It is erected 12 days before Christmas and remains in the square until 12 days after Christmas. Making the square even more festive is the fabulous Trafalgar Christmas Market. Over 20 stalls sell everything from Christmas ornaments, jewellery, hand-crafted goods and lots of sweets!

St. Martin-in-the-Fields Winter Lodge

Walking north up Charing Cross Road, stop behind the historic St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church, where they host a Winter Courtyard Bar inside a cozy winter lodge. You can sit beside a roaring fire and enjoy Christmas cocktails, mulled wine & cider, hot chocolate, beers, and seasonal snacks. The winter lodge is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout December. This is the perfect way to warm yourself up for the rest of the evening.

St. Martin’s Lane

Take a stroll along St. Martin’s Lane. St. Martin’s Lane is where many of the most important theatres are located, making it a hub for entertainment and culture. This area is famous for its vibrant nightlife, upscale hotels, and trendy restaurants. The lane is decorated with different Christmas street lights hung above walkways. But all the stylish restaurants in the area go all out with their Christmas displays, adding to the festive environment.

Mr Fogg’s Tavern

Along St. Martin’s Lane is one of the most quintessential Christmas pubs in the city, Mr. Fogg’s Tavern. This charming and unique tavern was inspired by the fictional character Phileas Fogg from Jules Verne’s “Around the World in Eighty Days.” Mr. Fogg’s Tavern goes all out with Christmas decorations, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Expect to find the space adorned with traditional holiday trimmings, including twinkling lights, wreaths, garlands, and even a few beautifully decorated Christmas trees.

The tavern is designed to transport guests to the Victorian era, and during the Christmas season, this ambiance is enhanced with period-appropriate decorations and details that evoke a sense of nostalgia. Mr. Fogg’s Tavern is known for its creative and themed cocktails, so you can anticipate a special Christmas cocktail menu. These drinks include traditional favourites like mulled wine, spiced cider, or unique concoctions inspired by the holiday season. Be sure to book a reservation in advance, even for a drink, as this place can get very busy!

Dishoom Covent Garden

If you are in the mood for something a little different but still a staunchly Londoner place to eat, head up the road to Dishoom Covent Garden. Dishoom is a series of restaurants known for their homage to the Irani cafés of Bombay. Stepping inside, you’ll be immediately enveloped in nostalgic décor that transports you to the bustling streets of Bombay. At Christmas, the restaurant is adorned in festive decorations, with stars hanging from the ceiling, and a glowing, warm, inviting atmosphere.

Dishoom offers a special Christmas Feast menu for the holiday season. This menu features a blend of traditional Indian flavours with a festive twist. Dishes include Turkey Raan (marinated and slow-cooked turkey leg infused with Indian spices and flavours), tenderstem broccoli, chilli sprouts, spiced cranberry chutney and Mince Pie Kulfi. Indian food is so important to the fabric of London’s food scene, and Dishoom is one of the most iconic locations to try this cuisine.

Seven Dials

Make your way north until you reach the infamous Seven Dials intersection. Seven Dials is a circular junction where seven streets converge, giving the area its distinctive name. It’s one of the liveliest parts of London, and at Christmas, their light displays are so dynamic. The central column is surrounded by starry snow globes lighting your entry into the Seven Dials.

Vibrant pink and silver lights hung above the cobblestone streets along the converging streets. I love the modern take on the Christmas lights juxtaposed against the Victorian buildings.

Seven Dials Food Market

If you’re still looking for something small to eat, head into the Seven Dials Food Market, which is also captivatingly decorated with Christmas lights. This chic multi-level food court is home to dozens of micro-restaurants & bars.

Pick & Cheese

My favourite is the Pick & Cheese Cheese Bar, the world’s first and only cheese conveyor belt restaurant. Here, you can pull up to the bar and admire the array of British cheese pairings swirling around under glass domes on the conveyor belt. Once you find one that catches your fancy, simply pull it off the belt and enjoy! At Christmas, they have specialty pairings that feature everything from Christmas Cheddars, pickled apples, fruit and soaked raisins.

Covent Garden

From Seven Dials, make your way to the old Covent Garden Market. This historic marketplace is steeped in centuries of tradition. But at Christmas time, it is one of the most festive centres in London. The market’s elegant piazza, adorned with neoclassical architecture and lively street performances, is brimming with twinkle lights, Christmas trees, oversized wreaths and the smell of mulled wine emanating in the air.

Also, outside the Piazza, you’ll always find some special exhibitions. In years past, there was a special Frozen Christmas Village. And last year, Dolce and Gabanna set up a multicoloured light display that made for awe-inspiring photos!

Apple Market

Covent Garden’s Apple Market dates back to the 17th century when it was a bustling fruit and vegetable market. Today, it houses a crafts and antiques market. Walking inside, you will be overwhelmed by the fantastical giant silver and gold disco ornaments hanging from the ceiling. Creating a kaleidoscope of lights reflecting off every surface. Oversized mistletoe chandeliers also dangle above, inviting romantic Christmas kisses.

Covent Garden Christmas Tree

You’ll find the mammoth Covent Garden Christmas tree outside the Apple Market! This Christmas tree is the largest hand-picked tree in all of London. In addition to this, the tree was grown at the same tree farm where the Royal family gets their Christmas trees. So it’s perhaps the poshest tree in London as well! It takes organizers over 300 hours to decorate the tree. And they even used a cherry picker to get those baubles to the top.

The area outside near the Christmas Tree is where visitors can get the chance to see “snow” falling in London. The snow falls every hour on the hour, so arrive accordingly. Sure, it might be fake snow made of soap, but how everyone erupts with delights and how magical it makes the space feel is all that matters!

The Strand

Make your south of the square onto Southhampton Street, which lets you exit onto the famous Strand. This is a historic and prestigious thoroughfare that runs along the northern bank of the River Thames. All along the street, you’ll find famous landmarks and renowned institutions. At Christmas, they hand these beautiful light displays shaped like blue and gold ornaments hanging above the road. One of the best parts of this area is looking at the iconic red double-decker bus driving under the sparkling Christmas lights.

Somerset House

To finish the evening, continue along the Strand, past Landcaster Place, through the Northern arches to enter Somerset House. The Duke of Somerset once owned the property, but today, the building is often used to host events centred around arts and education.

The square is transformed into a giant fairytale-like ice skating rink at Christmas. A massive 40-foot twinkling Christmas tree stands watch over the skaters. At night, the rink is illuminated in multicoloured lights, which create a magical atmosphere and highlight the architectural beauty of the building itself.

If you feel like putting on a pair of skates, this is a great opportunity to enjoy an iconic Christmas activity set in a historic London landmark. The best way to end a perfect evening exploring central London’s Christmas Lights!

Saturday 

Saturday is all about shopping and gazing at sumptuous window displays. London is one of the best cities in the world for shopping. And at Christmas, the shops are made even more magical as they are dripping in baubles, twinkle lights and tinsel! Even if you don’t want to spend big money, many of these shops are attractions in their own right. Simply wandering around inside feels like walking into a festive art gallery.

Breakfast at The Wolseley

To start your day in London, let’s find a great English breakfast. The Wolseley is a luxurious and quintessentially British dining experience. It’s known for its grand art deco-inspired interior, impeccable service, and a menu celebrating classic European and British cuisine. 

Walking inside, you’re greeted by high ceilings, marble columns, mirrored walls, and sparkling chandeliers. And for the holidays, everything is decorated with twinkling garlands and sparkling decorations. Even an enormous Christmas tree is hung atop the clock in the centre of the cozy dining room. It feels more like having breakfast inside someone’s chic house rather than a restaurant.

The breakfast menu at The Wolseley offers a wide range of options to suit different tastes. You can expect a mix of traditional English breakfast items and continental delights. Given its popularity, making reservations in advance is advisable, especially during the holidays or on weekends.

Shopping at Fortnum & Mason

After filling up on breakfast, it’s time to walk off those calories with a tour around Piccadilly and St. James. The first and most important stop is at Fortnum & Mason, one of the city’s most iconic and historic department stores! Fortnum’s is known for its luxury goods, exquisite Christmas hampers, and gourmet Christmas food. 

The store is beautifully decorated at Christmas, with elaborate window displays, twinkling lights, and festive greenery. A giant mistletoe descends like a waterfall down the stairwell making for such an impressive sight as you enter the building.

Christmas Hampers

Fortnum & Mason is famous for its Christmas hampers, which are elegantly packaged and filled with gourmet delights. These hampers make for beautiful gifts but are also great for enjoying yourself. These precious wicker baskets are chocolates, preserves, fine wines, puddings, nibbles, Fortnum’s classic tea blends, and much more.

The store also offers a wide array of luxury gifts for everyone on your Christmas list. You’ll find beautifully crafted and unique items, from high-quality fashion and accessories to home decor and fragrances. Expect to pay a pretty penny, but everything in here is a real treasure.

My favourite gift to buy here are their premium teas, coffees, chocolates, biscuits, jams, and other delectable treats. The Christmas season often brings a special selection of seasonal items like Christmas puddings, mince pies, and spiced preserves.

Hatchards

Just down the street from Fortnum’s is Hatchards, one of London’s oldest and most prestigious bookshops. Established in 1797, the store maintains its historic charm inside its beautifully preserved Georgian building. Over the centuries, Hatchards has hosted numerous famous authors and literary figures, including Charles Dickens, Lord Byron, and Winston Churchill. As a result, the shop has become a beloved institution among bibliophiles. Adding a unique allure to the Christmas shopping experience here.

During the festive season, Hatchards adorns its windows and interior with enchanting Christmas decorations and themed displays. The warm and inviting ambiance encourages visitors to immerse themselves in the holiday spirit while shopping for books. Hatchards boasts an extensive collection of books spanning various genres, from classic literature and contemporary fiction to non-fiction, travel, and children’s books. This makes it an excellent place to find thoughtful and personalized Christmas gifts for special book lovers. I found a gorgeous copy of A Christmas Carol here for my nephews that they will treasure for years to come.

Jermyn Street

From Hatchards, walk through Princes Arcade, south to Jermyn Street. Jermyn Street is world-famous for its high-quality tailoring and menswear shops. You’ll find a wide selection of impeccably crafted suits, shirts, shoes, and accessories. If you’re looking for the perfect gift for a well-dressed man in your life, Jermyn Street is the place to be. 

These high-end shops ensure to entertain their customers by decorating their shops in beautifully embellished festive lights and decorations. Creating a magical and joyful atmosphere to window shop and browse. Jermyn Street is also home to several gourmet food and wine shops. Here, you can find a fantastic selection of fine wines, chocolates, cheeses, and other culinary delights. Great additions to your Christmas dinner or for perfect for creating a custom gift hamper.

St. James’s Street

Walk west along Jermyn Street until you reach St. James’s Street. St. James’s Street has many luxury boutiques and high-end shops, making it an ideal destination for those seeking exquisite and exclusive gifts. The street exudes a timeless and elegant ambiance with its beautiful Georgian architecture. During the Christmas season, the street is decorated with festive lights and decorations. I especially love the real garlands hung on all the wrought iron fences.

Historic Shops

My favourite shops to visit are Lock & Co. Hatters and Berry Bros. & Rudd. Lock & Co. Hatters was established in 1676, and it is considered one of the oldest hat shops in the world. Lock & Co. Hatters has been granted several Royal Warrants, including from Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the Prince of Wales. This prestigious recognition underscores the shop’s reputation for quality and craftsmanship. At Christmas, they always have such a cheerful display in their window and gorgeous bright red hats to suit the holiday season.

Berry Bros. & Rudd is a prestigious wine and spirits merchant with a rich history dating back to 1698. Their St. James Street shopfront is always adorned with elegant garlands, festive wreaths, and twinkling lights This is the place to come if you’re looking for an array of wines, including vintages and rare bottles, ideal for gifting or enjoying during holiday celebrations.

Buckingham Palace

From St. James Street, walk south onto The Mall until you reach the iconic Buckingham Palace. Buckingham Palace is one of the most recognizable landmarks in London. Originally known as Buckingham House, it was constructed in 1703 as a private townhouse for the Duke of Buckingham. The palace became the official London residence of the British monarchy during the reign of Queen Victoria in 1837. Since then, it has been the primary residence of reigning monarchs, although it is used for various ceremonial and official functions.

The architectural style of Buckingham Palace is primarily neoclassical and, in my personal opinion, is a little lacklustre. Unfortunately, aside from a few large wreaths hung on the front gates, the palace doesn’t decorate the exterior Christmas season, but it would be a shame if it’s your first time in London not to at least pay this spot a visit.

The Buckingham Palace Shop

One place where you can find awash of Christmas decor is inside the Buckingham Palace Shop! This is the official gift shop for the Royal Collection Trust, which means you can find a wide range of items related to the British royal family. If you or your loved ones are interested in British royalty, this shop is a treasure trove of royal-themed gifts.

Elizabeth Street

Make your way along Buckingham Palace Road to Elizabeth Street in the upscale neighbourhood of Belgravia. Elizabeth Street is lined with beautifully preserved Georgian and Victorian townhouses. During the Christmas season, it is adorned with sumptuous festive decorations. So many flower shops in the area transform their shops and their neighbours into an absolute wonderland of living Christmas decor. But my favourite has got to be the Paddington Bear statue made of Christmas baubles.

Elizabeth Street is home to a variety of high-end boutiques and specialty shops. You’ll find a curated selection of fashion, accessories, home decor, and gifts. These boutiques often offer unique and artisanal products perfect for thoughtful Christmas gifts. Bayley & Sage is a popular gourmet food shop where you can find a range of delectable treats, including chocolates, pastries, cheeses, and fine wines. These make for excellent Christmas gifts or additions to holiday feasts.

Pavilion Road

Walk along Elizabeth Street towards Eaton Square Garden. From here, turn left onto Cliveden Place, which turns into Symons Street. Continue until you reach the entrance to Pavilion Road. Pavilion Road is a picturesque and vibrant street in the heart of London’s Chelsea neighbourhood. Thanks to its pedestrian-only pathways, it feels like you’ve entered a charming little village.

On either side of the street are historic Georgian and Victorian townhouses, contributing to its timeless and elegant character. Each of the old houses has been transformed into a chic shopfront. Inside you’ll find everything from stationary, cheese, barbers and even my favourite ice creamery (Parlour by the Ice Cream Union). At Christmas, the entire road is decorated in a string of Christmas Lights, and the shops on either side are absolutely brimming with decorations and specialty gifts perfect for everyone on your Christmas list.

Ottolenghi Chelsea

Undoubtedly, you’ll be hankering for something to eat by this time of the day. And one of the best places to eat in all of London is at Ottolenghi. Founded by Israeli-British chef Yotam Ottolenghi, Ottolenghi’s restaurants are known for their innovative approach to Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. The culinary philosophy emphasizes vibrant flavours, fresh ingredients, and creative combinations that celebrate the beauty of vegetables.

Ottolenghi Chelsea is a more casual option with a counter-serve deli that features signature dishes like roasted aubergine with black garlic, saffron and sesame-crusted quail. And, of course, a variety of colourful salads incorporate all the key holiday seasonal ingredients. At Christmas, their food is laid out like a festive wreath with red and green vegetables as the main highlight of many dishes.

Bread Ahead Bakery

For dessert, you’ll want to wander down to Bread Ahead Bakery. Bread Ahead is one of London’s top bakeries specializing in handmade doughnuts. They are often considered some of the best in London. I find their stand in Borough Market to be a little stale, but this smaller shop is where to go for the good stuff! These doughnuts come in various flavours, and at Christmas, you can find gingerbread, Honeycomb, and Blackcurrant.

Sloane Street

Make your way north along Pavillion Road and turn right to continue to Knightsbridge along Sloane Street. Sloane Street is an iconic and upscale shopping street popular with luxury designer boutiques and high-end fashion brands. It is home to flagship stores and boutiques of some of the world’s most prestigious fashion houses. This includes Chanel, Gucci, Prada, Versace, and Dior. During the holiday season, Sloane Street comes alive with luxury festive decorations for everyone to enjoy. No purchase necessary.

Harvey Nichols

At the top of Sloane Street, you will reach the lavish entrance to Harvey Nichols. This extravagant and eye-catching luxury department store is brimming with Christmas decorations and creative window displays. These displays often feature intricate designs, unique themes, and attention-grabbing visuals that draw crowds of onlookers.

Harrods

Just down the road is the place everyone comes to see at Christmas: Harrods. London’s world-famous luxury department store is renowned for its extravagant and opulent Christmas displays and the myriad of wonders inside the exquisite Christmas Food Hall. The exterior of Harrods is illuminated with thousands of sparkling lights and festive decorations, turning the building into a dazzling Christmas spectacle. Last year, the exterior was transformed into a beautiful gingerbread house designed by Christian Dior.

Harrods’ Christmas window displays are a sight to behold. The store unveils a series of meticulously crafted window scenes each year that tell a captivating story. These displays often feature animated characters, intricate set designs, and a touch of whimsy, captivating visitors of all ages.

Harrods Food Hall

Inside the store, you’ll find lavish Christmas decorations inside their Christmas department. The Christmas section takes up almost an entire floor in the basement and includes different themes like luxury, tradition, and fantasy. Whatever theme you want to dress up your house for the holidays, you’ll find it here. Just expect to pay those high Harrods prices!

The Christmas Food Hall at Harrods is a gastronomic wonderland offering an extensive selection of gourmet food and beverages for the holiday season. It’s a paradise for food lovers and those looking to create a festive feast. The Food Hall features festive treats, including mince pies, Christmas puddings, yule logs, chocolates, and holiday-themed cookies. I often come here during the week to grab a sandwich or pastry from the food hall as they always have special holiday flavours. This is a real treat, but the quality and uniqueness are worth the splurge.

Dinner at Daphne’s

One of my favourite Christmas displays is hidden away inside one of my favourite restaurants. Daphne’s is located in the heart of Chelsea and is a local favourite for Italian cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. The decor changes slightly yearly, but you can always expect an absolute blow-out! Christmas lights and baubles hang from the ceiling, like the most dreamlike forest of decorations. And this isn’t just one of those spots that is all glamour and no substance. The food here is amazing! Their menu changes slightly for each season, highlighting various seasonal ingredients and flavours, all under the umbrella of Italian-inspired Mediterranean dishes.

See Christmas Carol at the Old Vic

If you took my advice and nabbed an early dinner, you should have enough time in the evening to attend one of the most quintessential Christmas classics, A Christmas Carol. Every year, the Old Vic, a historic theatre in London, stages Charles Dickens’ beloved holiday story. They traditionally find a famed British actor to take on the infamous role of Scrooge. Which always adds a touch of celebrity to the event.

The sets are lovingly created to immerse the audience and allow them to step back in time to Victorian London. Musicians take the stage, and the fresh mince pies are passed out to the guests. Adding to the immersive and enchanting Christmas festivities. With so much good theatre in London, it’s often hard to decide what to see, but this is a no-brainer at Christmas!

St. Paul’s Cathedral

Our Sunday starts in the Old City of London! As we make our way to breakfast, it would be a shame to come to this area and not stop outside St. Paul’s Cathedral. We won’t step inside on this tour, but it’s worth admiring. St. Paul’s Cathedral, an iconic masterpiece of architecture and a symbol of resilience stands proudly in the heart of London like a majestic guardian of the city’s rich history.

The exterior of St. Paul’s Cathedral is a harmonious blend of classical and baroque styles, with its stunning dome serving as the crowning jewel. Rising 365 feet into the London skyline, this dome is a true marvel, making it one of the tallest in the world and a striking silhouette against the city’s modern skyscrapers. It’s impossible not to be awestruck by its grandeur as you approach. Be sure to walk towards the cathedral via the west front, with its statues of saints, angels, and apostles beckoning visitors with open arms. The sculptures and reliefs tell the story of the Christian faith.

At Christmas, a giant Christmas tree stands in front of the northern doors and greets visitors with cheery twinkle lights, even on a grey winter morning. Be sure to admire the view of the cathedral as we walk along Watling Street which frames this building perfectly under the Christmas lights.

Bread Street Kitchen

While this area has some of the oldest remnants of London’s history, we are having breakfast at one of the more modern restaurants in the area, Bread Street Kitchen. Bread Street Kitchen is a stylish, contemporary restaurant founded by renowned celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. While Chef Ramsay may not be in the kitchen daily, the restaurant upholds his culinary standards and overall food philosophy. And as Ramsay is such an icon of British cuisine, dining here feels like a quintessential British culinary experience.

Bread Street Menu

Bread Street Kitchen offers a menu of modern British classics with a focus on using locally sourced ingredients. Their classic English breakfast is always my go-to here, as it features all the traditional elements of an English breakfast but with an elevated twist. At Christmas, the restaurant explodes with festive delights, but in that same modern fashion that Bread Street is known for. I don’t know where you can get a more festive place to have brekky.

Host Café

If you’re looking for something more laid-back and budget-friendly for breakfast, you should check out Host Cafe. Host Cafe is located along the charming Watling Street and is set up inside the incredible St. Mary Aldermary Church. The church’s interior is one of the architectural wonders in the area and is an awe-inspiring reservation of the Victorian Gothic style. During the week, the church opens its doors to caffeine seekers with a tiny coffee shop at the back. Visitors can enjoy a fancy latte while admiring the beautiful historic architecture inside. They had even set up a series of larger tables behind the nave where people are clacking away on their laptops, and small groups have hushed meetings. 

The original church was built in the 17th century by Sir Christopher Wren, the master builder of St. Paul’s Cathedral. The original church features have been preserved through this readaptation of the space. To ensure they last another lifetime. The soaring vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and wooden pews make even a simple drip coffee feel like a special event. This was my favourite spot in the city to come and work or just relax while watching the light stream through those beautiful stained glass windows. A magical place to be. And the perfect escape on a rainy day.

Leadenhall Market

Make your way east along Queen Victoria Street and Cornhill Street towards the picturesque Leadenhall Market. Leadenhall Market is a stunning Victorian-covered market whose history can be traced all the way back to the 14th century! The first market that stood here was primarily for meat, poultry, and game and was opened near the eastern gate of the Roman city of London (Londinium).

Leadenhall History

By the 15th century, Leadenhall had become a prominent trading center for various goods, including leather, wool, and other commodities. The market’s name, “Leadenhall,” is believed to have been derived from the fact that before this area had a covered roof, individual market stalls employed lead roof tiles to protect shoppers from the rain.

The old market building was demolished in 1881, and architect Sir Horace Jones was employed to design a new ornate structure. This new building, constructed in the opulent Victorian style, is what visitors still see today. The magnificent architecture features wrought iron, glass, and colourful tiles, creating a visually stunning environment for shoppers throughout the year.

Leadenhall in Dickens

At Christmas, the market is adorned with an abundance of sparkling lights and festive garlands which line the walkways and buildings, creating a truly enchanting ambiance. In the centre of the market is the huge Christmas tree, lit every year by the mayor of London. Marking the official start of the Christmas season.

Leadenhall Market has a famous connection to the renowned English novelist Charles Dickens. This market is believed to have been the inspiration for the market where Scrooge sends a boy to purchase a turkey for the Cratchits in A Christmas Carol.

Tower of London

The Tower of London, a historic fortress nestled along the banks of the River Thames, is an enduring symbol of Britain’s medieval grandeur. With a lineage that spans nearly a millennium, this iconic structure has served various roles over the centuries. It was a royal palace, a prison and a treasury guarding the Crown Jewels. Visiting the Tower of London is highly recommended for first-time visitors to London. Stepping through the doors and even approaching its imposing presence is a momentous moment as you are in the same place where many of London’s most important historic events occurred. 

Be sure to take a guided tour with the ceremonial Yeoman guards. These guided tours are included in your admission and are filled with historical anecdotes, tales of intrigue, and a touch of humour. You can always find them wandering the grounds, easy to spot in their distinctive red uniforms. They are filled with extensive knowledge about the tower’s history so even if you don’t take a tour, they are on hand to answer all your questions!

Christmas at the Tower

Visitors can experience a magical transformation at Christmas with enchanting festive displays throughout the renowned fortress. Beautiful Christmas trees pop up around the perimeter, and traditional decor brings a festive touch to the ancient fortress. As you explore the iconic castle, try to find all the 12 Days of Christmas. But done up in a distinct Tower of London theme. Here, the five gold coins represent the Tower’s original home to the Royal Mint. Find the twelve Yeoman Wardens or the nine rowdy ravens. And, of course, the Seven Wifes of Henry VIII. 

Christmas By the River Market

Crossing over the iconic Tower Bridge, walk along The Queens Walk, where you’ll find the Christmas By the River Market. This holiday market is nestled along the water’s edge under the glowing lights of Tower Bridge. Winter cabins covered in fairy lights line the riverside. Each one sells hand-crafted items and delicious festive foods. 

In addition to shopping and food, there are activities throughout the seasons, such as Christmas carol performances. If you want to grab a drink with some friends, stop into the Riverside Lodge or Bar Reflexion for a festive seasonal cocktail.

Hay’s Galleria

Continuing west along the river, be sure to pop into Hay’s Galleria. This building was originally a large warehouse servicing hundreds of ships docked along London’s harbour. In the 1980s, it was redeveloped as a mixed-use building where you can wander through the enormous arched warehouse’s interior. Inside, you’ll find a mix of charming boutiques and high-end restaurants. 

But at Christmastime, the galleries are decorated to the nines in festive swag. In the gallery’s centre is one of London’s largest Christmas trees, which towers down over its visitors. The gallery is home to a pop-up of Christmas market stalls selling impressive, unique, high-quality handicrafts.

Borough Market

Continuing along the Southbank, make your way to Borough Market, where you can find some delicious lunch options! Borough Market has operated for over 1,000 years, making it one of London’s oldest markets. It’s a food lover’s paradise. With a wide array of high-quality fresh produce, artisanal goods, street food stalls, and specialty ingredients, all from local British producers. The market’s atmosphere is bustling and lively, and it’s a great place to sample British food and discover unique culinary delights.

You’ll find everything from fresh oysters to sausage rolls, savoury pies, cheese toasties, pork sandwiches, and (my favourite) custard crumble for dessert. Many vendors add a festive touch to their market stalls at Christmas with seasonal ingredients, Christmas spices and, of course, loads of decorations!

The Anchor Bar Bankside

As the afternoon draws to a close, we are nearing the end of the tour. If you have some extra time in the city and want a place to relax and enjoy a pint or a glass of mulled wine by the river, one of the best places to come is the Anchor Bar. The Anchor is one of London’s oldest and most historic pubs, dating back several centuries. It was right here where Samuel Pepys watched the Great Fire of London burn the city away from across the river. Little has changed within this old pub since Pepys’ visit. Aged wooden tables are spread throughout the labyrinth-like building, with intimate nooks tucked away in every.

Tips for Exploring London’s Christmas Lights

Where Can You Find London’s Best Christmas Lights?

The lighting displays are located all over the city. You’ll need to bounce around on the tube to see them all. But my advice is to pick one neighbourhood to explore. I’ve divided this post into different boroughs, so you know which area every display is located. That way, you can find out which areas interest you most.

When do the Lights Turn On?

In November, the lights start to be turned on, and they are kept up until early January. Thankfully, the sun goes down earlier in the winter, so the lights turn on around 5 p.m. This means you have lots of time to explore the illuminated city after the sun sets!

When is the Best Time to See the Lights?

If you want to avoid the huge Christmas crowds, you’re better off planning your trip in November. And be aware that weekends will be much busier than weekdays. I loved going out after dinner on a weeknight to explore the stunning laneways as a perfect nightcap to end a lovely evening.

But personally, I LOVED being right in the centre of London during the week leading up to Christmas. There was such a palpable atmosphere, with people flooding the streets and busy shoppers rushing around to finish getting everything on their Christmas lists. There really isn’t a bad time to come, just expect the crowds.

What to Wear

When venturing out to see the Christmas lights in London, it’s important to dress for the weather. While Winter in London isn’t as cold as other cities around the world, it can still get quite chilly, so dressing appropriately is essential to enjoy your festive outing.

• Layered Clothing: Layering is key to staying warm. Start with a thermal or moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Add a warm sweater on top.
• Winter Coat: Invest in a good-quality, insulated winter coat to provide warmth and protection from the cold. A waterproof coat is best to protect against the rain. Look for one with a hood to keep your head warm and dry.
• Hat: A hat or beanie is essential to prevent heat loss from your head.
• Scarf: A thick, woollen scarf can keep your neck warm and be pulled up to cover your face if necessary.
• Gloves: Opt for insulated, waterproof gloves or mittens to keep your hands warm.
• Thermal Leggings: We had days below zero last year, which is pretty rare for London, but on days like this, you should wear thermal leggings under your pants to add an extra layer of warmth.
• Warm Socks: Invest in warm, moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet cozy. You can even wear two pairs if it’s exceptionally cold.
• Waterproof Boots: Choose waterproof boots with insulation to keep your feet dry and warm. Ensure they have good traction to prevent slipping on icy or wet surfaces.
• Hand and Foot Warmers: For extremely cold nights, consider using disposable hand and foot warmers that can be placed in your gloves and boots for extra warmth.
• Umbrella: London’s winter weather can be unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to carry a compact, windproof umbrella in case of rain or snow.

Covent Garden

Although most people think of Covent Garden as the ever-so-charming marketplace, Covent Garden is actually the name of an entire neighbourhood in West London. The area is bounded to the east and west by the Kingsway and Charing Cross Road. And north-south by Holborn Street and the Strand.

Covent Garden Market Piazza

Start your walk at the old Covent Garden Market. This historic marketplace is steeped in centuries of tradition, but at Christmas time, it is one of the most festive centres in London. The market’s elegant piazza, adorned with neoclassical architecture and lively street performances, is brimming with twinkle lights, Christmas trees, oversized wreaths and the smell of mulled wine emanating throughout the air.

Also, outside the Piazza, you’ll always find some special exhibitions. In years past, there was a special Frozen Christmas Village, and last year, Dolce and Gabanna set up a multicoloured light display that made for awe-inspiring photos!

Apple Market

Covent Garden’s Apple Market dates back to the 17th century when it was a bustling fruit and vegetable market. Today, it houses a crafts and antiques market. Walking inside, you will be overwhelmed by the fantastical giant silver and gold disco ornaments hanging from the ceiling, creating a kaleidoscope of lights reflecting off every surface. Oversized mistletoe chandeliers also dangle above, inviting romantic Christmas kisses.

Covent Garden Christmas Tree

You’ll find the mammoth Covent Garden Christmas tree outside the Apple Market! This Christmas tree is the largest hand-picked tree in all of London. In addition to this, the tree was grown at the same tree farm where the Royal family gets their Christmas trees. So it’s perhaps the poshest tree in London as well! It takes organizers over 300 hours to decorate the tree. And they even used a cherry picker to get those baubles to the top.

The area outside near the Christmas Tree is where visitors can get the chance to see “snow” falling in London. The snow falls every hour on the hour, so arrive accordingly. Sure, it might be fake snow made of soap, but how everyone erupts with delights and how magical it makes the space feel is all that matters!

King Street

King Street, a cobbled gem within the heart of Covent Garden, is a captivating blend of old-world elegance and modern sophistication. The street’s enchanting architecture, characterized by Georgian and Victorian facades adorned with charming bay windows and ornate ironwork, is a testament to London’s architectural heritage. And at Christmas, all the boutiques and artisanal shops go all out with their Christmas light displays.

St. Paul’s Church

St. Paul’s Church is a secret spot inside Covent Garden, affectionately known as The Actors’ Church. It features a modest Christmas light display but is set in the most peaceful setting. Make sure to stop in and look at each of the benches lining the garden pathways dedicated to famous actors from London. St. Paul’s Church Covent Garden is a favourite among Londoners. Famed singer Gwen Stefani was even married to her first husband, Gavin Rossdale, in this church.

Seven Dials

Head north towards the Seven Dials. Seven Dials is a circular junction where seven streets converge, giving the area its distinctive name. It’s one of the liveliest parts of London, and at Christmas, their light displays are so dynamic. The central column is surrounded by starry snow globes.

Along the converging streets are vibrant pink and silver lights hung above the cobblestone streets. I love the modern take on the Christmas lights juxtaposed against the Victorian buildings.

St. Martin’s Courtyard

St. Martin’s Courtyard is hidden away, just off of Long Acre Street in Covent Garden. Walking into the courtyard, you pass under the most incredible oversized holly wreaths covered by bright white twinkle lights. The holly leaves seem to spill onto the street as boughs of garlands wrap around the shop windows.

St. Martin’s Lane

Walking back, take a stroll along Saint Martin’s Lane. Saint Martin’s Lane is where many of the most important theatres are located, making it a hub for entertainment and culture. This area is famous for its vibrant nightlife, upscale hotels, and trendy restaurants. The lane is decorated with different Christmas street lights hung above walkways. But all the stylish restaurants in the area go all out with their Christmas displays, adding to the festive environment.

The Strand

Walking south towards the river, you arrive along the famous Strand. This is a historic and prestigious thoroughfare that runs along the northern bank of the River Thames. All along the street, you’ll find famous landmarks and renowned institutions. At Christmas, they hand these beautiful light displays shaped like blue and gold ornaments hanging above the road. One of the best parts of this area is looking at the iconic red double-decker bus driving under the sparkling Christmas lights.

Somerset House

On the south side of the Strand, just beyond Waterloo Bridge, you will find the Neoclassical landmark Somerset House. The Duke of Somerset once owned the property, but today, the building is often used to host events centred around arts and education.

The square is transformed into a giant fairytale-like ice skating rink at Christmas. A massive 40-foot twinkling Christmas tree stands watch over the skaters. At night, the rink is illuminated in multicoloured lights, which create a magical atmosphere and highlight the architectural beauty of the building itself.

Mayfair

The upscale and elegant neighbourhood of Mayfair is known for its luxury boutiques, designer shops, art galleries, and high-end hotels. With so much extravagance throughout the year, you can expect nothing but the best from their Christmas lights and decorations.

Grosvenor Square

Grosvenor Square is one of London’s most prestigious garden squares. It transforms into a festive wonderland with a beautiful Christmas light installation during the Christmas season. The Square is adorned with 20,000 illuminated roses each year, forming a glowing carpet of flowers. Each flower can be purchased as a dedication to a lost loved one. All the money raised from these donations is then given to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Walking through the garden is a beautiful and sombre experience, especially at Christmas; it’s essential to think of those who might be missing someone special.

Annabel’s

Annabel’s is a private members club located inside a gorgeous Georgian mansion across from the historic Berkeley Square. The highly exclusive club was established in 1963 for wealthy members to privately gamble after partying. Everyone from the Queen herself to Olivia Newton-John and Lady Gaga has been deemed important enough to be allowed inside these hallowed gates.

And while you might never have the chance to enter the fairytale-like interior, all can enjoy their out-of-this-world Christmas decorations! Every year, they try to outdo themselves with bigger and better designs. Last year, the entire exterior was transformed into a magical carousel!

Piccadilly Street

From Annabel’s, walk south down to Piccadilly Street. Piccadilly is one of the most iconic streets in London, with a rich history dating back to the 17th century when it was a fashionable hub for London’s elite. At Christmas time, landmarks such as the Ritz Hotel enchant visitors with fantastical lighting displays.

Piccadilly Arcade

Walking east along Piccadilly, be sure to check out Piccadilly Arcade. Piccadilly Arcade is a beautiful neo-classical covered shopping arcade known for its exclusive boutique shops that offer a curated selection of high-end luxury goods. The arcade’s interior is decorated in blue and silver mirrored snowflakes, illuminating the architectural details throughout the arcade.

Burlington Arcade

Hop across the street and into another covered arcade, the Burlington Arcade. This covered shopping street was built in 1819 and featured incredible Regency-era architecture.

As this strip is home to many fine jewelry makers and bespoke tailors, they always decorate their interiors to entertain and amaze their high-end clients. Hanging from the glass roof is a series of giant disco balls and silver and gold baubles sparkling along the length of the arcade.

Bond Street

Just next door to Burlington Arcade is Bond Street. Bond Street is home to some of the most prestigious and expensive shops like Tiffany & Co, Sotheby’s and Bonhams. The Christmas installations along Bond Street are made to look larger-than-life! Framing the entire street, are these twinkling designs made to emulate peacock feathers.

The peacock feathers honour a group called the Bond Street Loungers, who, in 1820, became well-known for their fabulous fashions. They often wore expensive wigs and were seen strutting up and down Bond Street as if they owned it. They were also often called the “peacocks,” and the Christmas lights shine on to commemorate their daring fashions.

Above the intersections are these amazing crowns that incorporate those same peacock designs but so subtly that only those in the know will see them.

Many of the high-end shops on the street go ALL OUT. Cartier, Fenwick, Dior, Stellar McCartney and Ralph Lauren are just some of the incredible shops that spend thousands on decking out this exterior facade for the holidays. Despite being some of London’s most expensive shops, you don’t need to spend a dime to enjoy their beautiful lighting displays.

Regent Street

Make your way along Bond Street towards Brook Street, where you can turn east to Regent Street. Regent Street was designed in the early 19th century by the renowned architect John Nash to symbolize London’s grandeur and world-class urban planning. Regent Street was named after King George, the Prince Regent who reigned over England from 1820 to 1830. The sweeping curve of the street, the ornate facades, and the regal terraces make it a timeless icon of London’s magnificence.

The Regent Street lights are my favourite Christmas light installation. Soaring above the passersby are these giant “spirits” with sparkling wings. Many people refer to these as angels, but they are, in fact, officially called the spirits of Regent Street. 

The decorations were inspired by historic Christmas lights displayed initially on Regent Street that featured traditional angels playing trumpets. The illuminations were created with the input of the Crown since Regent Street is owned by the Royal Family, and they must approve everything. The spirits are made up of over 300,000 lights. Their golden 17-meter wingspan reaches across the entire length of the street. Watching over delighted shoppers. The lights glitter and flash, giving the effect of the fluttering wings. Almost as if they could simply take off at any moment.

Liberty of London

Quickly stop inside Liberty London, a luxury department store along historic Great Marlborough Street. The shop opened in 1875 and was immediately one of the most popular spots for high-end Christmas decorations. One of the iconic aspects of the store is the Tudor revival design of the building. Despite being a Tudo style, this was actually designed in 1920.

Every year, Liberty London unveils its festive Christmas window displays. The charming designs attract visitors from all over the city to gaze in awe at the delightful displays. Inside, the smell of balsam and eucalyptus fills the air with scents inspired by fragrant winter forests. Its enormous five-storey atrium is home to a fantastical paper Christmas tree with Christmas lights dangling from the ceiling. It’s a wonderful to behold.

Carnaby

Make your way out the back door of Liberty, where you find yourself immediately in the centre of the fantastical Carnaby Street Christmas Lights. Whereas Regent Street focuses on historical references, Carnaby Street aims to break away from tradition and draws you into a festive wonderland with unique and eye-catching decorations.Carnaby Street gets its name from ‘Karnaby House,’ a large and impressive mansion built here in 1683. The estate was so iconic that people began to refer to the area simply by that name.

Every year, the colourful streets of Carnaby explore a different theme that inspires their decorations. Everything from Rock and Roll to tropical carnivals and under-the-sea adventures. Last year, instead of creating something new, all the lights and designs from years past were collected to celebrate the history of Carnaby’s creative expression.

Kensington

Churchill Arms

Undoubtedly, the Churchill Arms is the most festive pub in the entire city. They put the rest of the city to shame with their incredible outdoor Christmas lights displays. The Churchill Arms is located in Kensington, just minutes from Kensington Palace. Kensington is one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in London. It is home to many international embassies and consulates and the residence of many politicians and billionaires. The pub dates back to 1750 and is named after Sir Winston Churchill, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945. The pub was even one of Churchill’s grandparent’s favourites when they lived there.

During the Christmas season, the pub is adorned with over 80 real Christmas trees literally hanging off the side of the building. It almost looks like something about Whoville. It requires over 130,000 lights to cover the exterior and takes over a month to install. While some might think it’s a bit tacky, I love how over-the-top they go with their designs. And I cannot wait to see how it gets more elaborate over the years.

Christmas at Kew Gardens

Located just outside central London, Kew Gardens is a vast botanic garden wonderland that comes alive as the sunsets over the city. While people might think of Kew Gardens as more of a spring and summer destination, winter brings an entirely different look and feel to the grounds. The gardens have been transformed with unbelievable Christmas lights and decorations for visitors to explore.

The magical winter lights trail leads visitors around projections, tunnels of light, dancing waterside reflections, and trees drenched in jewel-like lighting in all different colours. The entire experience ends at the famous Palm House, where you can enjoy a cup of mulled wine and mince-meat pies while watching their musical Christmas experience.

Although outside the inner city, you can get to Kew Gardens in under 35 minutes on the tube. The Christmas celebrations start in mid-November and last until the first week of January. Tickets cost £21.50 off-peak hours and £26.50 during peak hours. These tickets get sold out faster than you might expect, especially on weekends, so buying them well in advance is advised.

Old City of London

The Old City of London, often simply referred to as the “City of London,” is the historic and financial heart of the British capital. It’s a neighbourhood that is steeped in history and tradition. It is home to some of London’s most iconic historical landmarks, including the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Bank of England.

Paul’s Cathedral

St Paul’s Cathedral is one of London’s most recognizable and impressive buildings. Its iconic dome has dominated the skyline for over 300 years and can be seen throughout the city. Every year, inside and outside the church, a series of enormous Christmas trees are installed. Each one towering over 24 feet tall. This tradition dates back to George V. The trees are all sourced from Sandringham, the royal estate of His Majesty the King. While the tree is simple and plainly decorated, something about that warm glow in front of one of the most incredible architectural buildings brings a warm smile to my face.

Watling Street

On the way out of the Cathedral, you should make a point to walk down Watling Street to view the beautiful Christmas lights hanging along the street. Watling Street is one of the most historic routes in England. It was used in Classical Antiquity and throughout the Middle Ages as one of the main Roman roads in Britannia. Today, it’s home to several lively bars and restaurants, perfect for an evening nightcap.

Leadenhall Market

The holy grail of Victorian London can be found right here inside the Leadenhall Market. Leadenhall Market is a vast covered market located in the centre of the old city of London. The origins of the market date back to the 14th century, making it one of the oldest markets in London. The market is also famous for being one of the locations where the Harry Potter movies were filmed.

Leadenhall Market’s Christmas lights are so iconic that the Lord Mayor of London himself comes to switch them on! The Victorian theme is present in all the decorations, which seem to harken back to that era. Festive foliage lines the arcade. All decorations reflect Victorian styles with bows, paper ornaments, British flags and fabric-covered baubles. Underneath the theatrical arch, leading guests into the market is the giant Christmas tree, where you will frequently hear carol singers delighting the guests inside.

St. James

Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square is perhaps the most famous public square in London. It is in the centre of Westminster, just steps from many of the most iconic buildings in London. The square was built in the 19th century to honour the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. During this battle, the British navy captured a difficult victory against the Napoleonic off the coast of Cape Trafalgar. Nelson’s Column stands in the centre of the square. It towers over the rest of the courtyard at 169 feet tall and is guarded by four lion statues.

While the column is usually the tallest structure in the square, the colossal Christmas tree installed in the yard gives the column a run for its money. Since 1947, Norway has gifted the city of London with regal Norwegian spruce. The first tree was a gift to thank the British for their support during World War II. They decorate the tree in a simplistic Norwegian style, with only a few lights strung vertically yearly. It is erected 12 days before Christmas and remains in the square until 12 days after Christmas. Making the square even more festive is the fabulous Trafalgar Christmas Market. Over 20 stalls sell everything from Christmas ornaments, jewellery, hand-crafted goods and lots of sweets!

Jermyn St

Walk along Haymarket Street towards Jermyn Street. Jermyn Street is renowned for its longstanding tradition of fine tailoring and men’s fashion. It has been a destination for the discerning gentleman searching for impeccably tailored clothing, accessories, and grooming products for centuries. Along Jermyn Street, you’ll see different variations of the spirits that hang above Regent Street. But it is far less busy on Jermyn Street, so if you’re looking for a less chaotic wander, this is the street to walk along.

Fortnum & Mason

As you walk along Jermyn Street, you’ll go to the back entrance to Fortnum & Mason. Be sure to walk through the front to appreciate the amazing Christmas Lights display. Fortnum & Mason is my favourite department store in London! Why? Well, because I think it has the most innovative and magnificent packaging in the entire world. As a graphic designer, I always notice packaging right away. And I find everything inside their shop to be an absolute delight. 

Fortnum & Mason goes all out on their Christmas displays during the holidays. Their award-winning window displays bring smiles to everyone passing them. They transform the facade into a giant advent calendar, with each exterior window numbered from one to twenty-five, decorated with lush garlands and cheerful twinkle lights. As the month passes, the numbers are illuminated individually, like doors opening on a massive advent calendar.

St. James Street

Make your way down St. James’s Street, stopping in front of Lock & Co. Hatters and Berry Bros. & Rudd, who often have some of the best lighting displays on the exterior of these historic stores.

Pickering Place

Hidden away off of St. James Street is Pickering Place. Pickering Place is a small, cobbled courtyard surrounded by elegant Georgian townhouses. This picturesque courtyard is reminiscent of a bygone era, and at Christmas, they decorate it with a beautiful traditional outdoor Christmas tree and white Christmas lights.

Marylebone

Just south of Regent’s Park, in the city’s north end, you’ll find the charming borough of Marylebone. Marylebone Village is best known for its stunning light garlands swagged across the old brick streets. Everyone in this small neighbourhood village seems to participate in the Christmas celebrations. Decorating every street corner and shop window.

South Molton Street

To start your explorations of Marylebone’s Christmas Lights, make your way to South Molton Street. The street was built in the mid-18th century, and much of the area still retains the original Georgian homes built in the 1900s. At Christmas time, it hosts a series of astonishing illuminated arches. Their bright blue glow beckons you in from far beyond. The blue is so bright, in fact, that it casts a blue glow over the entire street.

Oxford Street

If you are looking for a place to shop, there is no better street than Oxford Street. In fact, it is Europe’s busiest shopping street, with around half a million daily visitors and over 300 shops! Look up and down the street to admire the over one million twinkling stars raining down onto the street. They are genuinely some of the most impressive sights in the city. And you can almost always spot a myriad of red double-decker buses, almost grazing the tops of the lights. This scene always makes for the most perfect photo op!

St Christopher’s Place

St Christopher’s Place is a tiny pedestrian alley just off Oxford Street. It somehow maintains the feeling of a tranquil oasis just astride one of the busiest parts of town. That small-town feel is amplified with window boxes filled with flowers in the springtime, wooden benches and friendly locals chatting in the main square. When Christmas comes to St. Christoper’s, lovely extra-large illuminated ornaments hang from above. Casting a rainbow glow down on the narrow stone walkways below.

Marylebone High Street

Continue north along St. Christophers Place, passing Widmore Street until you reach Marylebone High Street. Marylebone High Street is famous for its boutique shopping scene. It is lined with an array of upscale and independent shops catering to diverse tastes and preferences. Everyone seems to get into the Christmas spirit at Christmas with elaborate displays on every corner!

Chelsea, Knightsbridge and Belgravia

Chelsea, Knightsbridge and Belgravia are some of the most affluent areas of London, located south of Hyde Park. These streets are where you can find a refined and upscale ambiance, Victorian townhouses, grand mansion blocks, and impressive garden squares.

Harrods

Founded in 1834 by Charles Henry Harrod, Harrods Department store, located in Knightsbridge, is perhaps the most famous shopping mall in all of London! If not the most recognizable name for luxury, it is known worldwide. Harrods goes all out with its Christmas decorations. Every year, they go about transforming the exterior, as well as the interior, of the store into a fantastical winter wonderland. Last year, Christan Dior took over the light displays on the facade with giant starbursts that sparkled like the stars in the moonlight.

Inside, Harrods Christmas displays are known for their extravagance and attention to detail. While they might be far above your Christmas budget, wandering around the displays is a great way to get inspiration for your home and enjoy the stunning Christmas atmosphere.

Daphne’s

One of my favourite Christmas Lights displays is actually located inside one of my favourite restaurants. Daphne’s is located in the heart of Chelsea and is a local favourite for Italian cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. The decor changes slightly every year, but you can always expect Christmas lights and baubles hanging from the ceiling, like dining in a forest of Christmas decorations!

Pavilion Road

Pavilion Road is a charming street in Chelsea near the Royal Borough of Kensington. Despite being close to the main road, this street truly feels like escaping back in time. At Christmas time, when the twinkly lights are strung up along the roofs and carollers can be heard singing in the distance, it feels like you’re inside a Charles Dickens novel. The road features a series of artisan food shops perfect for grabbing special items for your Christmas table. The jovial neighbourhood atmosphere along this street is palpable, and one of the best-hidden gems in the city!

Sloane Square

Sloan Square is another favourite destination in Chelsea for Christmas lights. This square is much more peaceful than the adjacent Duke of York. Immense snowflake-shaped lights hang from the trees, making you feel tiny standing underneath. The seductive Venus fountain in the centre of the square makes for the perfect place to nab a photo of the twinkle lights falling all around you.

Duke of York Square

Just down the King’s Road is one of the best places to see the Christmas lights in Chelsea; the Duke of York Square and the King’s Road. The Duke of York Square features these incredible chandelier Christmas lights hanging from the trees. I love how this gives the appearance of being inside a high-class ballroom in the middle of London.

To the east of the square, King’s Road features this amazing crowned light above the roadway. The crown is intricately designed and is based on the crown worn by King Charles II. Be sure to carve out some time to stroll around the Chelsea Christmas shopping mall. All the stores in the area have created some incredible Christmas displays inside and outside their shops!

Elizabeth Street

Elizabeth Street is a charming and picturesque street in the upscale neighbourhood of Belgravia. It is known for its quaint, village-like atmosphere, boutique shops, and, during the Christmas season, its beautifully adorned decorations that transform the borough into a festive wonderland.

Above the road, Elizabeth Street is adorned with festive lights in the shape of gorgeous chandeliers that illuminate the passersby with a warm and welcoming glow. These lights create a magical atmosphere and make evening strolls especially enchanting.

Southbank & Southwark

The boroughs of Southbank and Southwark can be found on the south side of the River Thames. Southbank and Southwark offer stunning riverside promenades with picturesque views of London’s skyline.

Belvedere Road

Belvedere Road runs parallel to the eastern bank of the River Thames and has one of the most impressive views of the London Eyes framed on either side by Christmas light-wrapped trees. While the London Eye, for me, is an overrated tourist trap to pay to go inside, looking at in from below, all lit up in Christmas colours, is always an impressive sight!

Southbank Centre Winter Market

One of the most popular spots in Southbank is the pedestrianized embankment along the Thames called the Queen’s Walk. This exquisite promenade was created for the practical purpose of public drainage and preventing flooding. But it has been transformed into this gorgeous walking area with trees set alight during Christmas. Glittering garlands hang about, and the modern neon lights can be seen reflecting off the waters of the Thames.

But perhaps one of the biggest draws to the area is the Southbank Centre’s, Winter Market. The smell of mulled wine permeates the air as you walk amongst the wooden chalet selling Christmas food and decor. All set under the twinkling lights above.

Borough Market

Borough Market is one of London’s most famous and historic food markets. Located in the Southwark borough of London, near London Bridge, it is a bustling and vibrant marketplace that has been a hub for food and drink enthusiasts for centuries. Borough Market embraces the festive spirit during Christmas with charming decorations and seasonal delights flooding the entire market.

Strings of twinkling fairy lights create a warm and inviting atmosphere, especially in the evenings and the outdoor portion of the market is wrapped in giant red ribbons, making the entire place feel like a giant Christmas present wrapped just for you!

Hay’s Galleria

Hay’s Galleria is a massive warehouse complex on the river that was once used for storing and distributing tea along the Thames River. Today, the building has been transformed into a shopping and dining destination. At Christmas time, Hay’s Galleria is home to a lovely little market, but best of all, there is an enormous Christmas tree and a fantastical alpine cocktail bar.

Christmas by the River Market

Against the backdrop of some of London’s most iconic locations lies London Bridge City’s Christmas by the River. This holiday market is nestled along the water’s edge under the glowing lights of Tower Bridge. Winter cabins covered in fairy lights line the riverside. Each one sells hand-crafted items and delicious festive foods. In addition, the market also features these amazing, larger-than-life animals lit with Christmas lights that look out over the city of London.

TIPS

Since Christmas is such a busy time in London with locals and tourists flocking to the capital, you should check in advance to see if you can book a lunch or dinner reservation. Many of the taverns on this list have incredible festive-themed menus that you won’t want to miss! Making a reservation will mean you won’t have to waste precious vacation time waiting for a table. But if you want to stop in for a drink, chances are you won’t have a problem.

Unlike the rest of London, many pubs are actually open on Christmas Day! They welcome in their locals to celebrate along with rogue tourists looking for a hot meal. Not all are open so its worth calling in advance to check. And remember, London public transport doesn’t run on Christmas Day. So it is best to plan on visiting the pub closest to your hotel or accommodation so you can easily make your way their and back on foot. Although you can always hire a black cab or Uber on Christmas Day, they are usually expensive and few and far between when you can find them. So I always advise planning something within walking distance. Just to be safe.

The Churchill Arms

The Churchill Arms is perhaps the most beautiful old English pub located in the heart of Kensington. The old pub has been around since Victorian times. And while the interior is absolutely amazing, it is the spectacle of the outside facade that draws people in. The Churchill Arms facade is covered in hundreds of flower boxes, with blooming buds and greenery literally dripping down over the building. But at Christmas, they take things to another level. By adding real Christmas trees hung on each of the three levels of the old tavern. Add to that a few million Christmas lights, and you’ve got one of the finest displays of Christmas cheer I’ve ever seen!

The interior is bursting at the seams with antiques and old ephemera that dates back to the age of Queen Victoria. Union Jack flags are hung from every corner, and the festive atmosphere inside is just as decadent out the outside. Unlike most bars which feature traditional pub fare, the Churchill Arms is home to a charming Thai restaurant. I absolutely adore curry, and the spicier the better! Nothing warms you up like hot food on a brisk windy day! If you can find yourself here on a night when they play live music you’ll fully get the complete Churchill Arms experience!

The Grenadier

The Grenadier is a great place to celebrate Christmas in London if you’re looking for a pub with a lot of history and a great local legend. Established in 1876, it was originally known as The Grenadier Hotel. And a popular meeting place for members of the British Army. A grenadier is a specialist soldier who usually has the job of throwing hand grenades in battle. The bar’s legend is that it was named after a young Grenadier named Cedric. One night, a group of soldiers were gathered in the bar playing cards when Cedric was accused of cheating. The soldiers were enraged and punished the poor boy by beating him to death.

Whether true or not, visitors have clung to the story and even claim to have seen the ghost of the young Grenadier. Locals would hang money on the ceiling in order to potentially pay off the debt and send the ghost home. People still leave money to this day, and the entire ceiling in this place is covered in a wallpaper of different currencies.

The Grenadier is famous for their great selection of beers, amazing fish and chips, and its festive celebrations. The tavern hosts a special Christmas Eve and Christmas Day event that includes a Christmas carol sing-along, mulled wine, seasonal food specials, and even a visit from Father Christmas himself. Sit beside one of their roaring fires to enjoy a day of festivities for all!

The Grazing Goat

The Grazing Goat, located in the quaint neighbourhood of Marylebone, is a classic country pub with an authentic British atmosphere. This place makes for the perfect setting to enjoy a Christmas meal in London. And while the interior is decorated to feel like a rustic tavern, the food itself is supremely elevated. The roaring fires, the smell of the fresh fir trees, friendly neighbourhood dogs sitting at the feet of their owners, all are elements that make this place really feels like a home away from home.

Before you even step inside, you just have to marvel at the adorable “goat” decorations outside. These goats are made of fir tree branches and greet you at the door! While some people might find winter in London a bit gloomy, this snuggly tavern makes all that bleak weather outside simply disappear. The Grazing Goat does a stupendous English breakfast and I implore you to start your day off right with a plate of their finest white pudding, homemade baked beans and roasted tomatoes with beef-fat!

Coach & Horses

In the heart of Mayfair is one of the oldest surviving unreconstructed taverns in the city of London; Coach & Horses. The building is an old Tudor-style structure built in the 1770s, that still features the iconic white plaster and black timber. At Christmas time, the original glass windows sparkle with twinkle lights that drape the entire building in an ethereal glow. Inside you’ll find the place decked to the nines with boughs of holly and Christmas trees galore.

They change up their menu during the holiday season and serve some delightful festive favourites! Their pie with turkey, cranberry, chesnuts and pork stuffing is like Christmas dinner all stuffed into a delicious pastry crust! If you’re looking for a drink but want something different, try their Rudolph beer, a full-bodied, malty and fruity ale to put you in the festive mood. And if you’re in town on Sundays, stop for their iconic Sunday roast. It is a freshly cooked roast paired with a glass of Bloody Mary for the ultimate Sunday treat.

The Argyll Arms

This gorgeous Victorian-era pub boasts one of London’s finest interiors. The Argyll Arms dates back to 1868, and stepping inside feels like stepping back in time. The mirrored walls, vintage decorative ceilings, etched glass partitions, and Victorian wood bar are all spectacularly preserved. The pub’s name comes from the fact that the second Duke of Argyll once owned this land. And he would frequent the original pub that first stood here. Rumour has it that there was even a secret tunnel that connected his mansion down the road to the pub itself. A handy way to sneak off without being seen for a late-night drink!

In addition to getting all decked out for the holidays, the Argyll Arms features a cheery Festive Menu. The 3-course menu offers up traditional British classics like pigs-in-blankets, bubble & squeak, glazed parsnips and a traditional Christmas pudding. And if you pre-book your 3-course Christmas dinner and don your favourite Christmas sweater the pub will even welcome you with a special Christmas treat.

Fox & Anchor Pub

The Fox & Anchor Pub, located near Smithfields Market, is a vintage-chic Victorian pub that really comes alive at Christmas! During the holidays, stepping inside feels like walking into a Charles Dickens novel. The building’s old wooden beams and antique decorative panelling sparkle in the candlelight that glows inside. Pop into one of their cozy booths where you can marvel at the stained glass that dots even the interior.

The Fox and Anchor are famous for their Sunday roasts. The meal features a crown of turkey, pigs in a blanket, goose fat roast potatoes, crushed winter vegetables, and of course, lots of gravy. Drooling yet? Me too! Pair this with a plate of handmade mince pies from the Smithfield Market and a glass of mulled wine for the perfect Christmas feast. They are also open for breakfast if you’re not up for their filling dinner menu. So you can enjoy the atmosphere early in the morning, setting yourself up for a brilliant day out in London.

The Sherlock Pub

A name synonymous with London has got to be Sherlock Holmes. And although Holmes was a fictional character, his name lives on in the city. So much so that there is even a pub named after the famous detective. Located just off the Embankment, the Sherlock Pub is a Victorian-style tavern featuring rustic-themed interiors pulled right out of Conan Doyle’s universe.

At Christmastime, the Sherlock Holmes Pub featurse a festive menu and some incredible special cocktails and concoctions that will warm you from the inside out! Grab a pitcher of mulled wine to share with the table. Since Sherlock Holme is so popular with the entire family, this pub is one of those places you can definitely bring the kids. They even feature a festive kids’ menu that caters to the youngins’ appetite. And since the pub really draws in tourists, it also goes all out on their Christmas decor. To make sure anyone feels like they have a Holmes away from Homes this Christmas.

The Red Lion Pub

Standing on the corner of Parliament street, in the heart of Westminster, the Red Lion Pub sits on the site of London’s oldest medieval tavern. The Hopping Hall was where medieval Londoners would gather for their own Christmas drinks back in 1434! Although the name has changed over the years, the building itself feels like a piece of history. Even Charles Dickens, the Victorian Christmas writer, was known to be a frequent visitor. And being so close to 10 Downing Street, the pub is also popular with everyone from Prime ministers to visiting dignitaries.

The Red Lion already feels so festive with their glowing chandeliers but at the holidays they cover the interior with boughs and baubles. Their Christmas trees are all decked out in red and gold ornaments to match their already stunning interior.

The most impressive part of the building is the Victorian Gin palace located in the main dining room. This interior captures the glorious grandeur of the period. Their Christmas dinner menu features a favourite of mine; Hereford beef, ox cheek and beauvale blue cheese pie! I love a blue cheese pie! But if that might be a little adventurous for you, their Chesnut mac and cheese is a favourite with everyone who tries it! Really unique but super delicious. Finish it off with sticky ginger pudding with chocolate sauce and glazed mandarin for a sweet seasonal treat.

The Roebuck

The Roebuck is one of those pubs that feels like a complete secret and yet a complete stunner. The Victorian three-storey red brick building is awe-inspiring. Accented in green wooden timber, it almost looks like a red and green Christmas present all year round. But in November, when the twinkle lights turn on, and it is decorated for the season, there is an added layer of glamour. But despite all its fantastical appearances, the atmosphere inside is really laid back and relaxed.

With mismatched chairs and custom works of art featuring the iconic ‘buck’, this place is such a good watering hole for trendy Londoners to gather. During the festive season, they host a lovely Christmas menu featuring local meat, sustainably sourced fish & seasonal vegetables. This is the spot to come if you want to feel like a local.

The Jugged Hare

Walking up to the doors of this former bank-turned-pub, a visit to the Jugged Hare genuinely feels like dining inside a regal palace interior. The towering stone-columned facade leads into a sky-high tavern covered in exquisite paintings, shimmering chandeliers and antique Victorian woodwork. Decorating all the walls are a variety of taxidermied animals; this definitely isn’t the place to bring a vegan… At Christmastime, the animals were ever given seasonal trimming with an ornament hung from their antlers and their heads serving as hangers for large wreaths.

The pub’s name comes from the traditional British dish of jugged hare, where a rabbit was simmered inside a ceramic jug. The original recipe leaves much to be desired, so the restaurant has adapted it into a Jugged Hare Pie served with braised meat, veggies and port and redcurrant gravy.

But at Christmas, you must try their gourmet Christmas Menu! Although a little pricey at 65£ pp, it includes three courses and Christmas mince pies, finished with coffee and tea. For starters, you should ensure you try their pigeon with rhubarb and beetroot and nosh on their wild Suffolk red deer loin for your mains. Nothing is better to finish it than the Christmas pudding with brandy custard! The Jugged Hare is also famous for its Saturday Bottomless Brunch!

Mayflower Pub

The Mayflower pub is a hidden gem in the heart of Rotherhithe. It is a charming traditional English pub surrounded by old cobbled streets. Sitting inside by the candlelit, you have a beautiful view of the Thames River. The pub’s name, ‘the Mayflower,’ was given to the tavern as it was from the docks just along the river opposite the pub that the ship Pilgrim Father’s Mayflower was moored before setting off to America in 1620. For over 400 years, people have been coming here for a drink and to warm themselves by the fire. Thanks to this, the Mayflowers boasts the oldest pub on the Thames River! They also claim to have the best fish and chips in London! But this is a claim I’ve seen in multiple places, so it’s a matter of personal choice. But always worth a try!

At Christmas, there is something so classic and simple about the decorations that fill the inside and out of the Mayflower. They even have a few real Christmas trees outside to greet their guests as they come indoors. Once you walk inside, you’ll be overwhelmed by the nostalgic atmosphere and vintage decorations that swirls around the cozy interior. Sit down with a pint of beer and a Christmas cheese board (one of my personal favourites) to enjoy with a group of friends. Catching up with old friends is one of the best parts of the holidays, and there is no better place than the Mayflower to while the night away.

Cadogan Arms

Deep in the heart of Chelsea, the Cadogan Arms recently reopened after a much-needed renovation to restore the historic pub to its former glory! What was once a humble neighbourhood pub is now a stylish and modern public house. The Cadogan Arms focuses on bespoke beers, classic cocktails and British food that highlight seasonality and traceability. This place is the most upscale bar on the list, but I wanted to ensure there was a little bit of everything on this list to suit all tastes and budgets.

Feathers, dried flowers, huge vases full of green branches, and leaves seem to heave from every corner. The natural decor contrasts the beautifully rich woodwork and incredible stained glass behind the bar. Starting in November, the Cadogan Arms starts serving its hot drinks menu! This features mulled wine, hot buttered rum, Chartreuse hot chocolate, Irish coffees and fresh mince pies to pair alongside them! The hot drinks menu runs until the end of the year, perfect for drawing out every last day of the holiday season, long past Christmas Day!

The Distillery Winter Village

When you visit the Distillery District during the holidays, you will feel like you are in a winter wonderland! The Distillery District is one of Toronto’s most charming spots. Built in 1832, the old Gooderham and Worts Distillery has been preserved to be enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. The cobblestone streets and restored Victorian Industrial buildings have been transformed into a pedestrian-only neighbourhood with amazing restaurants, cozy bars and unique boutiques. 

And there is no better time to visit the Distillery District than at Christmastime! The entire neighbourhood is converted in November into the Distillery Winter Village. The streets are transformed with millions of twinkle lights and bright Christmas baubles. Wooden market stalls pop up to mirror those traditional European Christmas Markets. It’s a great spot to do some holiday shopping! The market hosts over 65+ unique and local shops, artisans, restaurants and cafés. So whatever you’re looking for, you most likely will be able to find it here!

Hours & Admission

The market opens on November 17th, and the event’s last day is December 31st.

Tickets are required on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays after 4:00 PM and December 27-31 after 4:00 PM. At all other times, access is free of charge and tickets are not required. Your ticket time window indicates what time you can enter the distillery. But there is no limit to your visit duration. 

The market is always packed on the weekend after 4 PM, hence the requirement for ticketing so they can control crowd levels. If you can go during the week, this will be your best chance to visit when it’s less busy. I always advise going during the week if you can.

Tickets are $11 + HST each. Kids 9 and under are FREE of charge.

One-of-a-Kind Winter Show

The One-of-a-Kind Show is an arts & crafts fair held a few times a year in the huge Enercare Centre within Exhibition Place. Every year at Christmas time, over 600 artists from across the country gather to sell their handmade goods. This is often my favourite spot to shop for Christmas presents and unique seasonal decor. The stuff you find here, you won’t find anywhere else! It’s nice to have such one-of-a-kind pieces of festive decor that your friends and family will be in awe of this Christmas.

With over 600+ vendors, you can wander the floor for hours. Just admiring all the incredible things people can create! Sometimes it feels more like going to an art gallery than a craft show! But here, you can actually afford most of the art you see on the walls!

Swedish Christmas Fair

The Swedish Christmas Fair was always one of my favourite events in Toronto! I sorely missed it when it was closed in 2020 and 2021. But I rejoiced when I heard it would be back in 2022! The Swedish Christmas Market is hosted by SWEA Toronto. This adorable marketplace features Swedish designs, products and folk art that will surely add some Scandinavian flair to your holiday decor. I fondly remember my trip to Stockholm at Christmas and all the wonderful Christmas markets. But being back at the Swedish Chrismas Fair in Toronto feels like being right back there, without ever having to get on a plane.

Be sure to stop by the cafe to get a hot plate of meatballs and lingonberry jam. There are also many events throughout the day, like a St. Lucia procession, Swedish Folk Dancers and Swedish Christmas Singers. It’s a great event to learn more about Swedish Christmas traditions. But my favourite part? The traditional Glögg, which is Swedish mulled wine. This beverage is the perfect drink to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. M

Leslieville Christmas Pop-up Market

Most people who visit Toronto rarely experience the east end of the city. The downtown core definitely hogs all the attention. But in my opinion (and I suppose I’m biased since I live here), this is a sorely overlooked part of town. The east end is full of charming architecture, a laid-back atmosphere and fantastic shopping and restaurants. But to find all that east-end energy in one place, you should head to the Leslieville Christmas Pop-up Market. The market is held every weekend in December. It features 30-40 local artisans and east-end businesses selling all the best Christmas goodies! Plus all sorts of handmade items, perfect for your Christmas gift list. In addition to the shopping, there is also a hot chocolate bar, a chance to meet Santa, ornament-making workshops and a children’s craft corner! Something for everyone

Toronto Botanical Garden Holiday Market

If you’re looking for an eco-friendly option for your Christmas Shopping, you should check out the Annual Toronto Botanical Garden Holiday Market. Over 65 local vendors come here to showcase their planet-friendly and botanically-themed festive products. If you love nature-based decor, this is the place to go. Everything from handmade real Christmas wreaths, seasonal plants, and vibrant poinsettias. There are even rare flower bulbs to give as gifts, great for planting in the spring! There are also Holiday Decor Demonstrations where you can learn how to make gorgeous floral arrangements! Something that will impress all your friends and family when they see it on the walls. The Toronto Artisan Market is a non-profit organization ​that supports and benefits local artisans and the neighbouring community. Every year, the organization hosts a holiday market at the Twist Gallery on Queen Street West. Everything from holiday gifts to original art, handmade jewelry, skincare, ceramics, home goods and more can be found here. One of the best places in the city to shop for the most uniquely creative gift options! Even if you have no idea what to get someone for Christmas, this is the place to get inspired. Every year, Nathan Phillips Square is a hub of Christmas activities and transforms into a magical winter wonderland. It is one of my favourite places to come at the start of the season to get into the Christmas spirit. And this year, their holiday fair has returned once more! This fantastic market is entirely free and open almost every day of the week! In addition to the fantastic vendors, there is a mesmerizing winter carnival with an old-fashioned carousel, carnival games and more! It is the perfect place for the kids to get that memorable meet-and-greet with Santa! And for the adults, there is the Polar Point bar. This holiday cocktail bar features seasonal favourites like mulled wine, hot apple cider, seasonal beer, liquor, and wine.

Stackt Holiday Hills

Stackt Market is North America’s largest shipping container market and is located in the heart of Toronto’s downtown. Literally stacked up, one on top of the other, a series of recycled shipping containers are now home to various shops and restaurants. Everything from microbreweries to local artisans. It is also a relaxed place to go and get some of the most incredible views across the city. Pop-up vendors arrive at the holiday market during the festive season. They join various Christmas workshops, winter games, and festive experiences like the giant inflatable Santa’s Village! Their fire pits are the perfect place to relax with friends while keeping warm under a picturesque snowfall. There is also an ironically Canadian s’more station! Perfect to nosh on a delicious sweet treat while enjoying the magical ambiance all around you.

Evergreen’s Winter Market

Evergreen Brick Works is one of those Toronto landmarks we all have fond memories of since it hosts some of the city’s best events! The former brick-making factory along the Don River has been transformed into one of the trendiest outdoor events spaces in the city! Evergreen prides itself on building sustainable practices that enable flourishing cities of the future. This year, after some closures during 2020 and 2021, they are hosting their Festive Winter Market again. This one-day-only event features everything from a delicious food court, a charming skating rink to immersive hikes along their wintery trails. And, of course, lots of vendors selling sustainably produced and handmade items along with artisan and vintage items. This is the place to experience a variety of classic Canadian Christmas traditions in one spot!

The firepits light up at night, and you can grab a winter-inspired cocktail from the bar to enjoy while relaxing in the warmth. The skating rink is open all night, and under a swath of twinkle lights, it is something out of a Hallmark Christmas movie. At 7 pm, the space comes alive with live music, so grab your loved one and hit the dance floor! While many think Evergreen Brick Works is a little out of the way for tourists to easily visit, thankfully, the Evergreen Shuttle is back! This shuttle bus really helps make the journey as seamless as possible. Simply ride the subway to Broadview Station and hop on the shuttle. It runs every 30-45 minutes from the parkette north of the subway.

Montreal Central Station

Start your tour inside Montreal Central Station. This is the most convenient access point to the downtown area from anywhere in Montreal. Nearly 11 million rail passengers use the station every year, making it the second-busiest train station in Canada. The station is decorated with huge pink stars and illuminated lights during the Christmas season. As we near Christmas day, they even set up a giant Christmas tree in the centre of the station. I arrived via Central station and there was nothing more magical to welcome me to the city! What a fantastical way to start your trip.

Dorchester Square

From Central Station, make your way north to Peel Street. Peel Street runs through Montreal’s most popular shopping district. The street is lined by former mansions converted into McGill University buildings. Making it one of the most picturesque streets but made even more spectacular at Christmas. On the edge of Peel Street and Boulevard René-Lévesque is Dorchester Square. As soon as the first snow falls on Montreal, this square is transformed into a Winter Wonderland. Sparkling Christmas lights don the trees around the park and the lamp posts are given sparkling and enchanting flare.

The park is set around some of the most romantic buildings in the city, all decorated for Christmas. The imposing Sun Life Building stands on the east side of the park. Its huge columns are encircled with Christmas lights and topped with one of the largest ornament garlands in the entire city. The roof of the Sun Life Building is also illuminated with different colours throughout the year. And at Christmas time is often seen illuminated with red and green colours.

Lights on Peel

Continue walking north along Peel street until you reach Peel and Sherbrooke Street. At this intersection, hand-crafted artifacts from the local Indigenous population of Montreal were discovered. Before there ever was a ‘Montreal,’ there was Tiohtià:ke. Tiohtià:ke is the name given to the area by the indigenous Kanien’kehá:ka clan who lived here for thousands of years. An illuminated installation called ‘Lights on Peel‘ can be found here during the wintertime. The lights aim to commemorate the story of Tiohtià:ke. The installation was designed by artist Kaiento:ton and portrays three of the Rotiononhsión:ni clan’s symbolic animals: the turtle, the wolf and the bear. You can also scan the QR codes found on the poles which display the lights to get more information on First Nations’ history.

Saint-Catherine Street

Walk west along Sherbrooke Street and then north down Rue de la Montagne towards Saint-Catherine Street. Saint-Catherine Street is the main street in the Montreal business district. It is considered the backbone of Downtown Montreal. There are nine metro stations along Sainte-Catherine that prove just how large important this part of town is. There is also an enormous Underground Pedestrian Network that is essential during those brutally cold winter days.

But during the winter, Saint-Catherine Street is a hub of Christmas activity. All the lampposts are hung with huge blue snowflake lights that brighten up the street. Not only are all the high-end shop’s windows decorated for Christmas, but the street itself is also home to some incredible installations.

Rendez-Vous Corner

Between Rue De la Montagne and Drummond is Rendez-Vous Corner. At the corner, you’ll find a huge lighted arch that is perfect for snapping those picturesque Christmas photos! Complete with bright pink Christmas trees in the background.

Guardians of Odyssée

Just to the east along Saint-Catherine, between Drummond and Peel, you can find the great Guardians of Odyssée! The Guardians are huge inflatable nutcrackers who watch over Montrealers and visitors during the holiday season. Their smile is their greatest weapon, and legend has it that they can break the hardest of diamonds with a snap of their jaws.

Legend of the Bears

At the Metcalf intersection, you will see the illuminated images of giants bears framing the street. This installation is called the ‘Legend of the Bears‘ and is based on an indigenous legend. It is said that if you see a bear in your dream, it means that good look is coming your way. So make a point of walking by to catch all the luck you can!

McGill College Avenue

Further east, you can make a stop at the entrance to McGill College Avenue. The street was first laid out in 1857. But in 1983, it was greatly widened to create this now incredibly scenic roadway. The trees along either side of the avenue and the centre lane are wrapped in twinkle lights at Christmas time. Casting the most magical glow onto the road, leading up to the hillside of Mont-Royal, silhouetted just up ahead.

Centre Eaton de Montréal

A great way to warm up is to stop inside the Centre Eaton de Montréal. This is one of Montreal’s largest shopping malls, with over 45,000 square metres of shops inside. At Christmas, the mall installs an enormous Christmas tree in the centre. It rises up above the three floors that surround it. The Christmas is hung with these huge digital frames displaying images of winter scenes all around Montreal.

Hotel Birks Montreal

At the corner of Saint-Catherine Street and Union, make a short detour towards the old Hotel Birks Montreal entrance. In 1840 Canadian entrepreneur, Henry Birks founded a jewelry company here in Montreal. He named it ‘Birks‘ and, in 1907, opened their magnificent flagship store in this very building. The shop spread out over 18,000 square feet and was complete with dazzling ornate architecture and modern conveniences. Eventually, the shop closed, but in 2018, the building was renovated to transform it into a high-end, historic hotel. Every year, the hotel goes all out for Christmas with lavish decorations pouring off the entrance into their hotel. This fantastical awning makes for an amazing photo spot underneath all that lush greenery and shining Christmas baubles.

Phillips Square

Back on Saint-Catherine Street, you can find Phillips Square. Phillips Square was named for Thomas Phillips, a building contractor and city councillor. Phillips died in 1842 and the land he once owned was donated to the city to create a public square in his honour. In the centre of the square stands a large statue of Thomas Phillips himself. The trees around the statue are all lit up with Christmas lights. And when the park has a layer of freshly fallen snow upon it, it is truly a spectacular scene.

Place des Festivals

A short walk east brings you to the Place des Festivals. Place des Festivals is a large public space created inside the Quartier des Spectacles. Quartier des Spectacles is Montreal’s arts and entertainment district. Montreal is home to over 100 different festivals and public events! As more and more people began to visit Montreal for these wonderful events, there became more need to build areas to host these outdoor events.

The Place des Festivals features a water fountain with 235 in-ground jets, four light towers, two glass-encased restaurants, a grassy slope and granite walkways. But during the winter, the square is transformed into a winter wonderland. Complete with Christmas trees lighting up the Great Montreal Christmas Market.

Luminotherapie

Also found inside the Quartier des Spectacles is Luminotherapie. Luminotherapie is now celebrating its 12th year, lighting up the Quartier des Spectacles during the winter season. This event features interactive art installations that are focused on illuminations. Places des Festivals is home to two amazing installations.

In the centre of the square, you’ll find ‘Echoes‘ by Mathias Gmachl. Echoes feature a giant metallic whale light with a rainbow of colours from inside. The colours inside the whale symbolize the planet’s flora and fauna. The whale makes gentle, melodic noises from afar. But if you get too close, it will make a loud noise to warn you that you are getting too close. A message about the invasive ways people are invading the natural world.

Towards Maisonneuve Boulevard, you can find ‘Impluse,’ a series of oversized seesaws. Each one glows and makes ambiant sounds. You can hop on and the more they move, the more intensive the noises will get.

Place des Arts

Next door to the Place des Festivals is the Place des Arts. Place des Arts is a major performing arts centre and the largest cultural and artistic complex in Canada. The centre of the plaza plays home to the ‘Iceburg‘ installation. Iceberg consists of a series of illuminated metal arches. When you walk through you’ll notice that each of them makes a particular sound. Sounds mimic the noise icebergs make when they crack as water seeps into their crevasses. The sounds echoing around you.

Les Jardins d’Hiver

Also located inside the Places des Arts is ‘Les Jardins d’Hiver.’ This little treasure takes visitors on a magical walk through a Christmas garden trail. It leads guests through a maze of Christmas trees featuring cozy little cottages displaying enchanting dioramas.

Parterre du Quartier des spectacles

Parterre du Quartier des spectacles on the orner of Rue Saint-Urbain and Rue de Montigny features a wonderful installation called ‘Entre les Rangs‘ by Kanva. The huge scene represents a field of wheat. The illuminated installation is made up of thousands of flexible stems topped with these little white reflectors. Each one responds to the nearby activity, which creates constantly shifting animation as if the wheat is blowing in the wind from different directions. It is the most peaceful and mesmerizing installation and the perfect place to end our tour.

McGill Street

At the corner of Victoria Square is where McGill Streets begins and heads down into the Old Town of Montreal. McGill Street is famously known as “the link between the strategic sectors of the Old Port, Old Montreal, and the Quartier international.” It is one of the most historical and, therefore, illustrious streets in Montreal. You can find such important buildings as the Canadian National Railway Company, Canadian Coast Guard, Canada Border Services Agency and a slew of popular restaurants all along this stretch of road.

During the winter season, the streets and individual buildings are all lit up for the holidays. The street is lined with these fantastic illuminated trees with a giant ball of lights bursting from the top! Enormous wreaths hang inside windows. And you can almost always see some of the most fanciful garlands made from real fir trees suspended from the doorways. The intoxicating smell drifts into your nose as you explore.

Maison Pepin

Continue along McGill Street until you reach Saint-Paul Street West. Turn left along the street until you read the famous Maison Pepin. During the wintertime, the alleyway entrance into Maison Pepin’s is transformed into their “Marché de Noël.” The old brick alley looks like something out of Harry Potter! As if you stepped into Diagon Alley when it’s all decorated for Christmas. Wreaths and Christmas tree hangs along the walls and when freshly fallen snow graces you with its presence the entire place is like a painting. Every year the team that decorated the alley brings a new element of wonder and this year their use of dried flowers is absolutely enchanting. And the entire scene is lit with a series of lights above casting down an ethereal glow on the alley.

Miracle on Place d’Youville

Continue shortly down Saint-Paul Street West and take a short detour towards Rue Saint Pierre to the corner of Place d’Youville. Hidden away, inside the Parlement Bar is an absolute Christmas Wonderland. Miracle Bar is like Christmas turned up to eleven. From the floor to the ceiling, Christmas wrapping paper covers the entirety of the space. Lights twinkle from every corner, hundreds of stockings hang from the top, and of course, Christmas music blares throughout the bar. It has the warmest, most friendly atmosphere, like walking into a warm hug. When I was in town, I was alone for a portion of the trip, and I didn’t feel alone in here for a second. Everyone was in the spirit of Christmas and happy to make new friends.

There are a myriad of Christmas-themed drinks on offer, as well as beer, cider and yes, even non-alcoholic drinks as well! They all come in a delightful array of Christmas drinkware, and if you love what you’re served in, you can even buy a mug or cup to bring home!

Place Royal

Continue along old Place d’Youville to Place Royal. Place Royale has always been an important meeting place for the people of Montreal. In the early 19th century, this was where you could have found the old marketplace. Today, the square is dominated by the Old Customs House. This is an archaeological site, which is a part of the Pointe-à-Callière museum. At Christmas time, the square is filled with a series of real Christmas trees. A large illuminated tree is positioned in the centre, with a life-sized sleigh nearby for fantastic photo ops!

Rue Saint Paul

Walking up Place Royal Street towards Saint Paul street, you can continue along this long road. Saint-Laurent Boulevard divides the street where Saint Paul Street becomes Rue Saint Paul. This is because Saint-Laurent Boulevard was once the dividing line between the English part of town and the French quarter. Saint-Paul is Montreal’s oldest street and for many years served as its main thoroughfare. It was established in 1672 and named after Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve, founder of Montreal. His residence was located on this street and built-in 1650. Rue Saint-Paul follows the path of the old fort which once bordered the area.

During Christmas, Saint-Paul street is perhaps the most enchanting. Massive Christmas light installations are put up on either side of the street. Creating almost a halo of light above the road. The stores on either side of the street are filled to bursting with Christmas spirit. It seems like every boutique has its own unique approach to Christmas decor and peeking your head inside is a wonderful way to warm up.

Rue Saint Vincent / Rue Saint Anne

As we continue towards Place Jacques-Cartier, make a quick detour up Rue Saint Vincent. The street was originally built on the land owned by Jean-Vincent Philippe de Hautmesnil. Jean-Vincent was a businessman and wealthy fur trader. His uncle, the Sulpician Gabriel Souart, was the first parish priest of Montreal. The street gets its name from the patron saint of Jean-Vincent Philippe de Hautmesnil.

Just a few feet along Rue Saint Vincent is the incredible alleyway Rue Saint Anne. This hidden passageway is framed by a series of old wooden branches in platers covered in twinkle lights. And as you enter the alley, you pass under a monumental archway also wrapped in lights. Creating this tunnel all aglow!

Place Jacques-Cartier

At the end of the Rue Saint-Vincent, you’ll pop out right in the middle of Place Jacques-Cartier. The square was originally built in 1723 as the royal gardens belonging to the Château Vaudreuil. The Château Vaudreuil was made for Philippe de Rigaud, Marquis de Vaudreuil but was burned down in 1803. After the destruction, the city transformed the space into a public square, known then as New Market Place.

In 1809, a large column was installed and named ‘Nelson’s Column.’ But in 1847, it was renamed in honour of Jacques Cartier, the explorer who claimed Canada for France in 1535. Today it stands as the oldest public monument in Montreal. During the Christmas season, the street is lined with lighted trees. At the top of the square is a huge light art installation. Made in the shape of large bare trees with branches resembling reindeer antlers.

Bonsecours Market

Head back down to the Rue Saint Paul-East and continue walking until you reach the Bonsecours Market. Bonsecours Market is a two-story domed public market first built in 1844. And for more than 100 years, it was the main public market in Montreal. Today, it’s home to boutique shops popular with tourists. During the Christmas season, the building’s large Doric columns are covered in Christmas lights. Highlighting the beautiful architecture of the old building.

Rue de la Commune

Take a short walk towards the water, out to Rue de la Commune. Rue de la Commune follows the original shore of the Saint Lawrence River. The buildings along the north side of the road are former commercial buildings.

From this point, you have a beautiful view along the tree line Rue de la Commune and the accompanying Christmas lights. You can also see the beautiful Old Port to the north and towering La Grande Roue de Montréal Ferris Wheel, which lights up the sky.

After getting a good look at the Port, head back up towards Rue Notre Dame Est. Make a stop at the top of the street, where you have an incredible view of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel. The Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel is one of the oldest churches in Montreal. Built in 1771 over the ruins of an earlier chapel. The church is always decorated and lit up for Christmas. With the Ferris wheel spinning overhead, this spot makes for the perfect photo opportunity.

Vauquelin Place

Looping back towards where we started, walk along Rue Notre Dame Est to Vauquelin Place beside the old Montreal City Hall. The small square is home to the old Montreal Great Christmas tree! It is one of the most instagrammable spots in the city during the Christmas season. The square is named after captain Vauquelin who was a distinguished French naval office. A statue of the captain still dominates the square behind the fountain where the Christmas tree is located.

Montreal Courthouse

Further down the street, you’ll come up the Montreal Courthouse. The brutalist style of architecture really stands out among the old town neo-gothic buildings. In front of the courthouse every year, they put up a large white illuminated Christmas tree. While it is just one lone Christmas tree, the way the light reflects off the glass windows of the building is really spectacular.

Places d’Armes

At the intersection of Rue Notre Dame-West and St. Sulpice Street, we find the Places d’Armes. Place d’Armes is a large public square centred around some of the most famous buildings in the city. This includes the great Notre-Dame Basilica, Saint-Sulpice Seminary, New York Life Building, Aldred Building and Bank of Montreal head office.

Originally the public square was called ‘Place de la Fabrique‘ when it was first developed in 1693, at the request of the Sulpicians. It was later renamed Place d’Armes in 1721 when it became the stage for various military events. From 1781 to 1813, it was used as a hay and wood market. Eventually, in 1836 it was redeveloped as a Victorian garden. For more than a hundred years, the square fell out of favour and eventually fell into disrepair. It wasn’t until 2009 that the city decided to renovate it at a whopping cost of $15.5 million!

During the holiday season, the square is one of the most popular places to come to see the Christmas lights. Massive illuminated stars are set up all around the square. They look like shooting stars that have fallen to earth. As you stand there the stars change colour and transform the look of the square. Just across from the square, the Banque Nationale also features a large window display on their first floor. The trio of Christmas trees and blue twinkling lights delight all the visitors passing by.

Parc Saint-Jean

Continuing along Rue Notre Dame-West, you’ll see some different lighting designs dedicated to this area of town. Along this street, the lampposts are hung with sprays of illuminated tree branches and large brightly glowing snowflakes twinkle and shine.

At the intersection of Rue Notre Dame-West and Rue Saint-Jean is a small parkette named Parc Saint-Jean. This park is decorated with the most delightful Christmas lights. It features a large illuminated arch that makes for one of the best Instagram spots in the town. And best of all, this park is pretty hidden away and usually a little very peaceful. The rest of the park is dotted with giant twinkling snowflakes, randomly dispersed all over the grounds.

Tips for Surviving Winters in Montreal

Montreal is COLD. And I’m saying that as a Canadian. There is something about that Montreal winter that hits different. Perhaps it’s the wind, or maybe it’s the humidity off the river (that’s right, there is even humidity in the winter). Whatever the reason, being prepared to face the winter weather is key to having a good time in Montreal. The average temperatures in December are around -4.7°C or 23.5°F. But don’t let the set temperature fool you. Let me introduce you to a very Canadian term, the “feels like.” We don’t just look at the thermometer. You need to check the “feels like” temperature. This takes into consideration the wind strength, humidity, as well as air temperature to give you an idea of what it actually feels like outside.

Most public spaces in Montreal require you to wear your mask at all times unless you are eating and drinking. So be sure to bring with you some high-quality masks. The current recommendation, especially during the winter, is to wear disposable KN95 masks. Luckily, these come in all different colours and even various patterns just like the cloth masks. So no need to simply settle for the boring medical blue and white. Hand sanitizer is always recommended to have on hand when you cannot wash your hands right away. Especially when getting on and off public transit.

Dress in Layers

One of the best pieces of advice for winter weather dressing is to wear layers. Then if the weather warms up or cools down, you can take off or put on more layers as needed. Some essential materials to look out for are merino wool, polar fleece and cashmere. These fabrics will help keep you warm but won’t make you sweat, as the materials are more breathable. You can find quality winter items on Amazon or in any of your favourite clothing shops (Uniqlo, J. Crew, Everlane). If you’re on a budget but really want to have something cozy, check out your local thrift shops. I have found dozens of fabulous 100% wool or cashmere sweater at thrift and vintage store. Usually for less than $20 when brand new they would cost over $200 and up! Plus vintage shopping always results in some sweet styles.

Winter Coat

If you already own a winter coat, you definitely need to bring that. But if you live in a warm place like California and think a light pea coat is a satisfactory winter coat, you’re going to have to rethink that a little. The two key elements that make up a quality coat for winters in Montreal. These are the length and the filling. You really want a long coat, at least something that goes down to your knees since you’re legs can get really cold.

The other element is to ensure the coat is down feathers filled. If you want to avoid animal products in your clothes you can also look for synthetic alternatives. Look for coats containing Primaloft, Omni-Heat, Thermolite, Thermacore, or Weathered fillings. A good coat with a hood is also a great way to ensure your head and neck are warm, as they are one of the primary ways heat escapes the body in the winter.

Boots

A good set of winter boots is also a key to ensuring those toes don’t get too cold. There is nothing worse than cold feet in the winter. It turns a lovely walking tour into a real pain. Since you can’t feasibly change from boots to fancier shoes as you go in and out of cafes and restaurants throughout the day, I suggest investing in a stylish boot. Luckily, so many brands make fashionable winter boots you’ll be happy to put on when you go outside.

Sorel is my go-to boot brand, but there are many other options from UGG, Dr. Martens, Blundstone and Columbia. If you don’t think you’ll have any use for a high-quality winter boot when you get home, try going to the used-clothing store and buying a pair second-hand. Just look for those brands listed as even an older boot will still be well made enough to last for ages.

Accessories

Even if you have a hood on your coat, you’d want to be sure to bring a large scarf or neck warmer to put around your neck. The wind can be brutal and blow your hood back, so you’ll be glad to have the scarf. I also bring a few different hats with me as it feels like a fun way to change up my outfit when I’m travelling in the winter.

Warm gloves are essential; you won’t get away with just putting your hands in your pocket. Trust me, I ran into some travellers from Spain who were otherwise dressed perfectly but missing their gloves, and by the end of our walking tour, their hands were freezing. If you use your phone to take pictures, you’ll want to get a pair of gloves with touch screen capabilities. Even taking your hand out of your gloves for a few minutes to take some pictures can really cool you down, especially at night. 

If you are terrified of the cold, I suggest investing in a set of hand warmers. These are fantastic to use throughout the day when the weather really dips down low. One of my favourite options is these OCOOPA Rechargeable Hand Warmers. They are a bit of an investment, but if you live in a cold-weather climate, you can easily use them throughout the year as well. And maybe this trip is the push you need to buy them. Plus they also double as a phone charger as well! If you just need something for the length of your vacation, you can also buy a pack of disposable hand warmers. These last up to 7-hours and easily fit inside your pocket to keep those hands nice and warm.

Long Johns

To keep your legs warm, you’ll want to bring along a pair of warm long johns. These can easily fit underneath your jeans or pants, so they won’t really change the look of your outfit. Fleece Lined thermals as the best thing to get to keep you warm all day long. If you can afford a pair of cashmere thermals, you’ll be overjoyed to find how utterly cozy you’ll feel.

But the cold weather and chance of precipitation mean you’re very likely to see snow when you arrive. The falling snow is like free Christmas decorations cast upon the city. So instead of complaining about it, just dress for success!

Do You Need to Speak French?

Although French is the official language in Montreal, you absolutely can visit the city without speaking any French at all. The signage might worry you at first since it is all in French (by law). But almost everyone in the city speaks English. In fact, many people live and work here who barely can speak fluent French themselves. Unlike Quebec City, which is primarily French-speaking, 57.4% of the population can speak both English and French. That being said, it is always a good idea to learn a bit of French to use when visiting. Below are some key phrases to know if you want to try and speak a bit of the local language.

Christmas Light of Old Montreal

There is nothing better than watching the snowfall while wandering the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal. The buildings that pop up throughout the old town date back as far as the 17th century. They are some of the most interesting and eye-catching buildings anywhere in the city. You absolutely cannot visit Montreal without making a trip to visit the old town and honestly seeing it at Christmas is just that much more special!

At Christmas time, the entire neighbourhood is decorated with fantastical Christmas lights and illuminated installations. Different streets have their own particular themes, like snowflakes, branches, stars and twinkling ornaments. Add to that the multitude of incredible Christmas window displays which peek out of the shop fronts, and you are left with one of the most magical experiences in Montreal!

Although my advice is simply to let yourself wander around the historic centre if you want to check off certain areas the street below are the best places to visit if you’re looking to see all the Christmas magic.

Old Port Skating Rink

Located along the St. Laurence River, you’ll find the beautiful Old Port of Montreal. The Port was initially built in 1611 and used by the French fur traders used it as a trading post. Today, the modern riverside is filled with museums and tourist attractions. One of the newest of these attractions is the Grande roue de Montréal or Montreal Ferris Wheel. It is now the tallest Ferris wheel in Canada and looks out over the entirety of the city. From old town you can almost always see it peaking out over the buildings.

But if you just want to savour the view of the Ferris wheel while enjoying a classical Canadian winter activity, head to the Patinoire du Vieux Port. The Patinoire du Vieux Port or Old Port Skating rink is open from 9 am to 9 pm and until 10 pm Thursday to Sunday. The rink is such a unique setting with a spectacular view of Montréal. And when it gets dark, the rink is spectacularily illuminated. Skate rentals are $10.45 per person. You can also rent a helmet for $4.35 or bring your own skates for FREE!

Sir George-Étienne Cartier National Historic Site

If you’re like me a LOVE a Victorian Christmas, you must make a stop at the Sir George-Étienne Cartier National Historic Site. Every year they hold a “Victorian Christmas” at the Cartier’s home. The Sir George-Étienne Cartier National Historic Site is a historic house-turned museum located in Old Montreal. It commemorates the life and accomplishments of Sir George-Étienne Cartier. It also includes the old Cartier family home. The Cartiers were part of the upper-middle class of 19th-century Montreal and had one of the most illustrious homes in the city.

From December 4th to the 19th, you can take a guided tour of the house and see how it would have been set up for Christmas in 1897! You can see all the “latest” trends in Christmas decorations popular in the 19th century. See what they would have had on their Christmas table and even look at the marvellous fashions women would have worn to Christmas dinner. It’s a fantastic way to learn about life in the early days of Montreal and how Christmas traditions have both changed and stayed the same after hundred-plus years.

Marché Place Jacques-Cartier

In the centre of Old Montreal is the Marché Place Jacques-Cartier. During the Christmas season, they set up a traditional Cabane à sucre in the square. The Cabane à sucre or sugar shack is usually found in the middle of maple groves deep in the woods around Quebec. The sap for the trees is collected throughout the year and boiled down in the springtime to make the most famous of all Canadian exports; maple syrup.

But in the wintertime, the maple syrup is boiled down even further to a thick, taffy-like consistency. It’s then poured onto a thick pile of snow to be cooled down even further. A popsicle stick is placed on top of the cooling sugar and rolled up until the sugar separates from the ice. And you get yourself a little maple syrup taffy on a stick. It is wonderfully sweet and such a treat to enjoy at Christmas time!

Noël Éternel

If you want to bring home the perfect Christmas souvenir from your trip to Montreal, there is no better place to go than Noël Éternel. The boutique located in the Old Quarter has been bringing the magic of Christmas to Montreal year-round since 1995. They have the most extensive collection of diverse Christmas decorations, from German nutcrackers, Russian dolls, mouth-blown glass ornaments or hand-painted items! There is something for everyone’s perfect Christmas tree no matter what your style.

Notre-Dame Basilica Aura

Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal or Notre-Dame Basilica is one of the most famous buildings in all of Montreal. Its steeple can be seen from all over the city, as it was once a city ordinance that no building could be built taller than the church itself. Construction began on Notre-Dame Basilica in 1672 with a small parish. Over the years, after the growth of the city, Montreal wanted to be known as the jewel of Canada. And to be such a place you needed a fantastical church. The breathtaking interiors of the church were constructed from 1785 to 1795. And the facade and vaulting were finished in 1818.

The interior of the church is what people come from far and wide to see. It is perhaps the most dramatic interiors in North America, if not the world. It features masterpieces of Gothic Revival architecture, with deep blue painted vaults covered in golden stars. The sanctuary is painted in blues, azures, reds, purples, silver, and gold. One of the most unique aspects of the church is their stained glass windows. Instead of depicting biblical scenes, the windows depict scenes from the religious history of Montreal.

Aura

Over 11 million visitors come to see the church every year, and one of the most alluring aspects of the church is that they have transformed the space from a simple place of worship to a multimedia spectacular. Aura transforms the interior of the church and highlights different aspects of the building using lights and projections. Music accompanies the entire performance. At times it feels like you are witnessing the church being built around you.

As someone who loves ecclesiastical architecture, I found the entire thing very moving. But the tickets are pricey. At $32 a person, there are plenty of people who might find this over-priced and underwhelming, especially when you can see projections for free outside with Cite Memoir. The show runs from Thursday to Saturday all year. But it does feel extra special at Christmas, even without any specific Christmas references.

Le Petit Dep

In the centre of Old Montreal, you can’t help but notice the darling aqua exterior and gold trimmings of Le Petit Dep. “Dep” is short for “Dépanneur,” which means convenience store. But this is a convenience store unlike any other! The building is from 1822 and has been transformed into this hipster coffee shop and boutique. Retro decor and vintage furniture compliment the space, inviting you inside and wrapping you in warmth from the cold. The cafe features a myriad of different Christmas-themed desserts during the Christmas season. And the boutique turns into the absolute perfect one-stop shop for everyone on your Christmas list.

Centaur Theatre

Located in the old Canadian stock exchange building, Centaur Theatre is one of the best examples of Montreal’s vibrant art community. Every year they put on a showstopping Christmas comedy. There is something new to see every year. If you are looking for something a little different than you’re typical Christmas nativity play, then this is definitely something you should check out!

Cité Mémoire

If you need another reason to wander the old streets of Montreal after the sun goes down, it is to see Cité Mémoire. Cité Mémoire breathes new life into the old city. The best outdoor video projections the world over are used across the old town to transform the urban landscape. Buildings and cobblestones are used as a canvas to tell the stories that have shaped the city. 24 different tableaux composed of images, dialogue, and music are projected on walls, alleys, ground, and even on the trees! Be sure to download their app that will guide you along the different routes. This allows you to explore the various projections hidden around the city with ease.

While there might not be a specific Christmas theme to this installation, it gives you a reason to get out and enjoy the outdoors after dark. And watching the projections surrounded by falling snow and twinkling Christmas lights is nevertheless a magical holiday experience.

Village de Noël de Montréal

If you’re like me and mourning the fact that you couldn’t easily make it out to the German Christmas Markets this year, the Great Christmas Market in Montreal or Village de Noël de Montréal will make your heart sing! From the end of November until the beginning of January, you can wander through a magical journey inside the Quartier des Spectacles. There are over 30 different enchanting chalets featuring both local artisans, musical entertainment and delicious food.

Inspired by traditional Christmas markets, you can find everything here from handmade jewellery, gourmet food, and classical Christmas decorations. The Montreal cold might be bitter, but it pairs well with a mulled wine and hot chocolate. Even if you’re not planning on buying anything, the decor which surrounds the market is so beguiling it’s worth just exploring.

Luminothérapie

Also located in the Quartier des Spectacles and Place des Festivals is Luminothérapie. Luminothérapie is an interactive illuminated art exhibit. Buildings have incredible projections placed upon them, and magical sound-and-light installations are placed along the sidewalks to be interacted with by passers-by. This is the kind of Christmas magic that you’ll see being enjoyed as much by the locals as by visitors. For the locals, it is something new and exciting to see. And as the winter weather begins to creep in it makes the cold all the more enjoyable.

The Nutcracker

Every year, the Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal presents The Nutcracker throughout the month of December. This year the show is a unique take on the production featuring the Kingdom of Sweets as well as all that iconic Tchaikovsky score. The show overwhelms you with the Christmas spirit and is a wonderful way to see the artistry of the Montreal ballet.

The Jardins d’Hiver

Jardins d’Hiver, or the Winter Gardens, is a special Christmas trail located just outside the Place des Arts, on Sainte-Catherine Street between Jeanne-Mance and Saint-Urbain. The wintery pathway takes visitors along a Christmas trees-lined maze towards these little cottages displaying enchanting dioramas. It’s like exploring a magical and luminous fairy-tale. The trail ends with a Grand Christmas tree perfect for your holiday photos.

Jean-Talon Christmas Market

The Jean-Talon Market is a huge farmer’s market in the Little Italy neighbourhood of Montreal. The market was opened to the public in 1933 and is over two city blocks long! The market is open year-round, even during Montreal’s frigid winters. As of last year, they opened their very first Christmas Market. The market has a focus on local cuisine! This market is a festive culinary experience that you absolutely cannot miss! Everything from chocolate to maple syrup and pastries are overflowing inside the darling wooden huts located inside the market building. Twinkle lights hang from the ceiling and blue spruce and fir trees make the entire room smell like Christmas!

Montreal Christmas Village

Located just outside the Old Town, in Atwater Place du Marché, you can walk around Montreal’s Christmas Village. The event is held from the end of November to the end of December. This marvellous public square is decorated for the holidays with local food vendors, artisan market stalls, live music and great activities for the kids. The little kiosks are all set up inside a wooden hut, reminiscent of old European Christmas markets.

A Christmas tree farmer sells Christmas trees inside the market to the locals here, so it always smells divine! Sitting beside the Christmas trees enjoying a hot cup of cocoa is a wonderful way to relax.

Noël dans le Parc

Noël dans le Parc, or Christmas in the Park, is an event held along Mont-Royal Avenue and Cartier Street in the Parc des compagnons de Saint-Laurent. Festivities run on the weekends from 2 pm to 5 pm during November and December. The Christmas celebrations include wonderful musical entertainment, perfect for those who love to sing carols. Grab a glass of warm mulled wine or hot chocolate and sit to enjoy the wonderful musical and artistic programming. This is very much a community-driven event, so you’ll find lots of locals with their families coming out to enjoy the outdoor party.

Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal

Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal is one of the most picturesque places to visit in Montreal. But at Christmas time, there is an even better reason to make your way out here. Inside the church is their museum collection featuring their various famous “Crèches.” A Crèche is a model or tableau representing the scene of Jesus Christ’s birth, usually displayed in homes or public places at Christmas. We also call these “Nativity Scenes.” The museum collections feature two of the church’s historic large outdoor Nativity Scenes.

But even more interesting, is the museum’s collection entitled ‘A World in a Crèche.’ This part of the museum features nearly one hundred Nativity Scenes from as many countries. Viewing all these different scenes, you can study the different ways each country depicts the Nativity scenes and how different artists make their unique impression on the classical display.

Juliette et Chocolate

One of my personal favourite places to go in Montreal is Juliette et Chocolate. This is place has immense nostalgia for me as I would frequent it with my dad when he lived in Montreal. Juliette et Chocolate is a chocolate lover’s paradise! Their cafe was originally just a little chocolate shop in Quebec City but as soon as it opened, it was a complete hit with the locals! They opened their first location in Montreal and it was just as big a success. Today, there are three different locations spread across the city. The shop sells all kinds of decadent desserts. From intensely chocolate brownies to rich fondues, sweet crepes and artful chocolates and pastries!

Hot Chocolate

But during the Christmas season, there is one main reason to come to Juliette et Chocolate, which is for their hot chocolate! They have over eight different flavours, which are sure to warm your body and soul. The favourite that keeps me coming back year after year is their Grandma’s style hot cocoa. The velvety hot chocolate is so thick and rich it almost feels like you’re drinking a chocolate fondu! You can even choose the type of chocolate for your drink; 70% Dark, 55% Dark, 33% Milk, or White!

And don’t worry, if you’re vegan, they even have a few vegan options made with an almond beverage. For a splurge, go for their smoked campfire hot chocolate (which costs a whopping $14.59 CAD!) This chocolatey campfire experience comes with their velvety hot chocolate smoked with wood chips and served with our brownie and toasted marshmallow skewer. If you’re looking for the best Christmas gift to bring home, they have a wide selection of amazing Christmas-themed chocolates and even produce their own advent calendars.

Le Darling

Darling café and bar are some of the enchanting settings for a Christmas dinner or nightcap. Hidden away inside a dark window front along Blvd St-Laurent, you step inside and are immediately overwhelmed by the whimsical decor within. The interior designers responsible for the fantastic interiors were inspired by colours and textures from steampunk with a modern, sassy twist. Decorating the walls are eclectic items like dolls inside bell jars, teacups, mannequins and carnival regalia. But during the Christmas season, they go ALL OUT on Christmas decorations with baubles hanging from every single surface and twinkling lights casting a magical warm glow all around the room.

Wherever you find yourself in this city, you are bound to discover the magic of Christmas. From random choirs roaming the streets to Christmas light displays outside family homes, there is so much to see and do in this city outside of the list I’ve curated for you here. When planning my Christmas trip to Stockholm, I initially didn’t think about Christmas Holiday closures. When you plan a dream trip, you don’t typically think about all that could go wrong or might not happen. But after booking all my flights, I thought, “Hmm, I wonder if I should be worried about anything being closed while I’m there.” Well, it turns out there was a lot that was going to close while I was there but nothing that a little planning couldn’t fix! All it took was plotting a careful schedule to ensure that everything I wanted to fit into the trip was scheduled on the days when things were open. 

If you’re planning a Christmas trip to Stockholm, here is how to plan your activities perfectly to ensure you see everything your festive little heart desires! I’ve laid out a sample itinerary for you, so you know what you need to visit on which day to make it there before it closes for the holidays. It’s designed as a holiday set in the week leading up to Christmas Day. But you can quickly shift it around to fit your particular schedule.

The Essentials

Weather

If you are picturing snow-capped rooftops on your Christmas trip to Stockholm, you might want to adjust your thinking. Although Stockholm does get snow, having a large snowfall around Christmas is a rarity. If you want to see some snow, it’s easy enough to jump on a train and head north toward the colder weather.

Despite the lack of snow, it does get pretty cold in Stockholm in December. The average high is 1°C, but the low is -3°C. Add the wind chill off the water, and without proper clothes, you can be freezing. But, embrace the Nordic saying of “there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing!” I was sure to bring lots of thermals for layering under my clothes. I also got warm wool sweaters, waterproof boots and an excellent selection of cute hats and gloves, making dressing for the cold all the more fun!

What about Daylight?

Being located so far north, Sweden gets much less sunlight in December than you might be used to in your own country. Even here in Toronto, it gets dark around 5 pm but in Stockholm, expect it to get dark as early as 2 pm! If you want to see something specific during the day, make sure you plan this into your schedule. But the darkness means you’ll be able to enjoy all those Christmas lights almost all day long!

Where to Stay?

NOFO Hotel, Soderlam

NOFO was recommended to me by my friend who lives in Stockholm, as it’s where all his guests choose to stay time and time again. It is located in the hip neighbourhood of Södermalm. The streets of Södermalm are where you can find the most relaxing cafes, trendy bars, and hipster vintage shops. The hotel itself is one of the coolest boutique hotels I’ve ever stayed in. There is a myriad of different room themes and styles, and the breakfast buffet included in your stay is beyond incredible! I almost always opt for eating out of the hotel to experience more local restaurants and cafes, but every morning there was no way I would pass it up!

Collector’s Lady Hamilton, Gamla Stan

Although the Gamla Stan (Old Town) is pretty touristy and most businesses shut down after 5 pm, having your room located inside such a picturesque place is a real treat at Christmastime. That said, make sure you splurge on a room with a view. Collector’s Lady Hamilton Hotel is located in a 15th-century building next to the Royal Palace. The Lady Hamilton Hotel has a 13th-century cellar, which is now used as a plunge pool! Throughout the hotel, you’ll find antique furniture, old paintings and crystal chandeliers, which make you feel like you’re staying inside a piece of Stockholm’s history.

Berns Hotel, Norrmalm

Norrmalm is another popular neighbourhood to put your head down as its located in the heart of mainland Stockholm. Norrmalm is probably the most central place to stay to get to everything you’ll want to see. Berns Hotel is one of those luxurious historic hotels that makes you feel like you’re immediately on holiday upon walking in the door! The hotel’s beautiful twinkle light covered exterior looks out over Berzelii Park and the Baltic Sea. The hotel opened in 1863 and has one of the most majestic interiors in the city. They even have an unforgettable holiday experience package at Berns which includes a full Christmas dinner, overnight stay and specialty breakfast. So if you feel like you might be homesick for Christmas, at Berns you’ll never miss a festive beat!

Public Transit

Since most travellers use public transit as their main mode of getting around, I thought it essential to list out any holiday changes to their schedule.

Metro

Dec. 23rd: Regular Sunday schedule (trains run from 5:00 am to 3:00 am)
Dec. 24th | Christmas Eve: The metro blue line runs from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm every 10 minutes, the green and red run every 15 minutes. From 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, it runs every 30 minutes. After 7:00 pm there is no underground service.
Dec. 25th | Christmas Day: After 6:00 am, the system resumes Sunday schedule service.  
Dec. 26th: Regular Sunday schedule 
Dec. 27th: Resume regular service

Buses

During the week of Christmas, many buses are still running but on adjusted schedules. Since there are so many different routes, it’s best to check online in advance for any specific route you are planning on taking. But in general, expect buses to be running on an adjusted schedule, which means longer wait times.

December 19th

Skansen Christmas Market

The Christmas market in Skansen’s open-air museum is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from November 26th until December 19th. So make sure you plan accordingly to ensure you arrive in Stockholm in time to visit the Skansen Christmas Market. If you arrived earlier in the month, you could easily visit this anytime. But if you have your heart set on seeing the Skansen Christmas Market (which I did), I would make this your first stop. While the local markets are great in town, the Skansen Christmas market is the most comprehensive and the largest! uy everything from handicrafts and design to sweets, home-made candles and secret Christmas presents. 

If you aren’t interested in Christmas Market, there is no need to rush over here as Skansen is open 365 days a year. But trust me, you won’t regret making this your first stop, as the atmosphere is magical. I would schedule an entire day at Skansen as there is SO MUCH to see and do! Way more than just the Christmas Market. You can visit all the historic buildings and learn about Sweden’s Christmas traditions. My favourite thing to do is end the evening inside the Solliden’s dining room, where you can enjoy a fancy Christmas smorgasbord and buffet. Great way to sample lots of different classic Swedish Christmas dishes.

December 20th

Stortorget Julmarknad

Located in the heart of Stockholm’s Old Town, Gamla Stan is the Stortorget Julmarknad. The Stortorget Julmarket is Sweden’s oldest Christmas market. This market, while small, carries everything you’d want from a Christmas Market. From cured meat to glogg, crispbread, handmade ornaments, straw Christmas goats, gingerbread, knitting and more!

The market runs from November 19th to December 23rd and is open from 11:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. I find going a few days before Christmas Day feels the most enchanting but not as chaotic and busy as the last day of the market.

Explore the Christmas Windows of Gamla Stan

After touring the marketplace, spend the rest of the evening walking up and down the historic streets of Gamla Stan. Since Stockholm was spared any destruction during WWII, this old town is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval quarters. At Christmas time, the storefront and shops along this touristy part of the city are decked out to the nines! Swags of fresh evergreens cover the doorways, Christmas lights glimmer against the icy cobblestones and little pink-faced gnomes in Christmas hats poke their heads out from all corners of the shop windows.

Sample some Glögg

Glögg is the traditional Swedish Christmas drink which all Swedes imbibe come the holiday season. It is sold everywhere, but one of the best ways to enjoy it is outside. It’s the perfect thing to warm up from the cold with! During Christmas-time, the streets are filled with Glögg vendors. Almost every single cafe also sells its own version of the traditional drink. I loved trying one every time it got cold and made a list of my favourite places to get glögg. Create your rating system for a fun little game to play as you wander around the city!

December 21st

Start your Day with a Sweet Treat!

Pepperkakor is the Swedish version of gingerbread and is one of the most iconic baked goods to enjoy at Christmastime. The thin cookies were eaten in Sweden as early as the 1300s. But it wasn’t until the 1800s that it began to be associated with Christmas. You can find these delicious desserts made with gourmet ingredients in specialty cafes, sample traditional homebaked treats in the Christmas markets or buy yourself an entire box inside the charming tins found on every shelf in the grocery store!

Another popular pastry sold during the holidays Saffron buns or lussekatters. These “s” shaped buns are a beautiful golden treat flavoured with saffron and currants. They are called ‘lussekatter‘ or ‘Lucia cats’ as the shape resembles a cat’s tail. These desserts can be found in everything from cafes to convenience or grocery stores.

My favourite Swedish Christmas treats are Kanelbullens or Cinnamon Rolls. They are a very popular thing for Swedes to bake on Christmas morning. They are different from cinnamon buns I’ve had before, with a glossy exterior and big sugar crystals dusted on top! My favourite place to get them is the iconic Vete Katten cafe.

Walk the Christmas Lights Map

Spread across the city of Stockholm, there are over 40 streets and squares which have been festively decorated for the Holiday season. The stunning decorations are themed around Swedish Christmas traditions and iconography. Everything from moose, deer, mistletoe and stars seems to float around above your head, lighting up the dark days in even darker nights. I have a great guided tour of the city lights to follow-along, which takes you through the city’s best-decorated areas. It’s a fun and festive way to enjoy the streets of Stockholm.

Skeppsbron Waterfront Christmas Tree

Finish your Christmas lights tour with a visit to the Skeppsbron Waterfront to see the largest ‘real’ Christmas tree in the world. Standing 38 metres high, the Christmas tree on Skeppsbron in Old Town is the world’s biggest. It is covered with approximately 5,000 lights and is topped with a four-metre large star!

Enjoy the Julbord

The Swedish ‘Julbord‘ or Christmas feast is one of the most important family traditions. Pretty much all Swede have a Julbord on Christmas Eve. I have a whole post all about the Julbord which you can read to find out what to expect! But just because you might not know anyone who might invite you in for a feast doesn’t mean you can’t sample it for yourself. Historic restaurants like Operakällaren have their Julbord menus for both tourists and locals alike to try! It’s a great opportunity to feast on so many uniquely Swedish foods while also dining in one of the most beautiful restaurants in the city.

December 22nd

ArkDes Gingerbread Houses 

ArkDes on Skeppsholmen island is the national museum for architecture and design. Every year the museum features one of the most interesting Christmas exhibitions. It hosts a huge Gingerbread House competition where adults, children and professionals alike construct amazing creations all out of gingerbread. Since admission is free, it’s super easy to come in and enjoy simply the exhibition without feeling like you need to spend the whole day inside to justify the admission price.

Walking into the room filled with all the submissions, you are overwhelmed by the sweet, intoxicating smell of Christmas gingerbread. Every year there is a theme for the gingerbread houses, making a yearly visit interesting every time.

Centralbadet

If you’re feeling a bit chilly or tired from the cold, one of the best places to warm up is inside Stockholm’s Centralbadet. Centralbadet is a bathhouse located in the centre of Stockholm, yet almost hidden away. This magical place is tucked in off one of the city’s busiest shopping streets inside a large art nouveau building. Although there is nothing specifically Christmassy about this activity, the holiday season and your vacation should be about relaxing! And there is no better place to relax and get a massage than here. You can swim in the Roman pool, soak in the warm thermal baths and sweat out all the stress inside the Nordic saunas! It’s a great way to experience a very Scandinavian way of life.

Get a Bottle of Julmust

While you’re out and about, be sure to stop into a convenience store to pick up a bottle of Julmust. Julmust is a fizzy drink that tastes a little bit like root beer. The drink is ONLY available at Christmas, and Swedes go crazy for it as it has become the taste of Christmas. The drink is so popular in December that it regularly outsells Coca-Cola products as soon as it hits the shelves!

December 23rd

Christmas Cruise

One of the best ways to take in the sights of Stockholm’s waterfront is on a boat. And you might be wondering, “a boat in the winter?” And while indeed the weather might be a lot colder than a picturesque summer’s days it’s an experience not to be missed. The boats which run these cruises are set up to provide their visitors with the most comfortable experience even in the winter months. There is something so magical about seeing the (possibly) snow or frost-covered trees and buildings as you glide along the icy waters. To beat the cold they provide huge fur blankets and warm cups of glogg or hot chocolate.

There are buffets onboard many of these cruises, which provide you with another opportunity to sample a Swedish Julbord. The Christmas smorgasbord features classics like reindeer and elk meat, Swedish sausages, crispbread, smoked herring and salmon and cheese. I would recommend taking the early afternoon cruise. This means you have enough time to enjoy a bit of daylight but also admire the beauty of the city at night. The cruise lasts about three hours. Prices are around SEK 795 per person ($90 USD). December 24th

Live Advent Calendar

Every year the windows around the main square in Gamla Stan are home to an extraordinary Christmas tradition; the Live Advent Calendar. Every day until Christmas Eve, a window around the square opens and out pops a live performer. For 15 minutes, a performance is given by either an individual or a group. This would be a reading of a Christmas story, a speech or a song. Check the website for the schedule of when the windows will each be opened.

While you are welcome to visit the Live Advent Calendar any day leading up to December 24th, I decided to visit on Christmas Ever Day. And I found it to be the most lovely occasion. Many locals were there to celebrate the last day of the calendar, and it felt like a very communal celebration. Everyone sang along to the music, and even though it was all in Swedish, I still loved listening. There were speeches thanking the volunteers, so much laughter and I immensely enjoyed the beautiful music. Even though the Christmas market was closed on the 24th, they still opened the Glogg stalls. This way everyone could enjoy a glass of warm glogg while the Christmas celebrations continued.

Nordic Museum

After hearing the lovely music of the Advent Calendar, head over to the Nordic Museum. The Nordic Museum is one of the only museums still open on the 24th. It stays open to host one of the best Christmas parties in the city open to the public. This is great for families travelling who don’t have anywhere to celebrate at home or for tourists like us! They host a farandole at around noon. This is an open-chain community dance, around the giant Christmas tree in the center of the great hall. You can also meet Tomte, the Swedish Christmas Santa and get one of the best Christmas pictures!

Their restaurant is open, and there you can taste some of the most fabulous Nordic Christmas food. I was so surprised by how good the food was, considering it was set up like a cafeteria. But even the tables where you can eat are decorated for Christmas, and the atmosphere is so enchanting.

The museum has a great exhibition upstairs all about Swedish Traditions. The collection goes through the calendar year and delves into all the different holidays and their origins in both religion and folklore. The best part to visit during this time of year is obviously the Christmas displays. These feature some fantastic pieces of ephemera from Christmases past. It even has a large scale replica of the first Swedish Christmas tree.

Last Chance for Food!

Many grocery stores and restaurants are closed on December 25th. While celebrations are taking place on Christmas Eve, Christmas day is meant for rest. As such, the entire city feels like it has gone to sleep. While some restaurants remain open on the 25th, they are few and far between. If you have your mind set on something it’s best to research in advance to see if that place is open. So you might want to plan to do a big grocery shop in advance to get some ingredients for at-home meals and picnic lunches. Plus, this gives you an excuse to wander the Christmas themed aisles of the grocery store. I honestly love visiting grocery stores when travelling. It’s such an excellent opportunity to find local things to eat and drink that are simple and everyday foods.

When shopping for my Christmas Day meals, I bought a small pre-packaged charcuterie board, bread and jam (the jam in Sweden is bonkers amazing), some interesting drinks I’d never seen before, lots of Swedish snacks, and a few sandwiches, pastries and salads. And, of course, a bottle of glogg and a bottle of Yulemust. These are easy to carry around and have on hand throughout in case you don’t find an open restaurant.

December 25th

Find the City’s Best Views

Since almost everything is closed on the 25th, I found that it was the perfect day to schedule a few walks to some of the city’s best viewpoints! The highest natural point in central Stockholm is Skinnarviksberget. From this rocky outcrop, you can see all across the city to Kungsholmen, Gamla Stan, the Stockholm City Hall, and more. On the opposite side of the town, Fjällgatan, located on the edge of a cliff, provides a stunning view from the east. Throughout this area of town, you’ll pass well-preserved buildings from the 1700s, making it one of the most historical walks to take as well.

Abba Museum

If you are interested in learning more about the Swedish Pop Culture Icons ABBA, you need to pay a visit to the ABBA Museum! It might seem a strange way to spend Christmas Day, but the ABBA museum is one of the few open on Christmas day, and honestly, this place is so much fun; it’s pretty much the perfect place to be to enjoy a spirited afternoon. The ABBA Museum is much more than a museum stuffed with original costumes, gold records, and other memorabilia. With this experience, you can pretend to be on stage with ABBA, record at the Polar Studio, and dress up like the group’s members.

Ice Skating

Another popular Christmas Day activity is to go ice skating. The Kungstradgarden ice rink and the Vasaparken ice rink are two of the best places to visit in the city. They are each open from around midday to later into the evening. Skating is free, but if you need skate rentals, there is an extra charge. These rinks are gorgeously lit with festive Christmas lights and even play charming music to enjoy as you glide along.

One Last Fika…

Finish your evening off by stopping in at a cafe to enjoy on last Fika. Fika in Swedish means “to have a cup of coffee and a snack with a friend.” It’s absolutely built into the fabric of Swedish daily life. They embrace the idea of taking time to better your relationships while enjoying something scrumptious. I found that there were many cafes still open on Christmas Day despite restaurants being closed. This is how important Fika is, it is one of the only things to stay open! So, keep your eyes peeled and you’re bound to find someplace to rest your feet. It is the perfect way to stop, and reflect back on all the memories from your trip. Take out your notebook and jot down your favourite things you did or saw along the way. Trust me, you’ll treasure taking that time to cement those memories!
