Start Your Day at The Muffin Man Tea Shop

On a rainy day, there’s nothing quite like a hot breakfast to warm you up and get your day off to a great start! And in London, there is no shortage of cozy cafes where you can curl up. I also have an entire post dedicated to my favourite cozy coffee shops if none of these catch your fancy!

Ok, now, while this shop isn’t located on Drury Lane, but when I found out there was a cafe in London named the ‘Muffin Man,’ I knew I had to check this place out! Named after the children’s nursery rhyme of the same name, the Muffin Man Tea Shop is a charming and cozy little spot. Perfect for hiding away from the rain. The interior is decorated with a traditional English charm. Featuring quaint wooden tables and chairs, delicate lace curtains, and vintage tea sets.

The menu is classic English breakfast food. It’s not fussy or fancy, perfect for the kids. Their Muffin Man pancakes with banana, blueberries, and cinnamon are amazing and a great option to share as well. As it’s only breakfast and not quiet time for afternoon tea, if you want to try something similar with your kids, go for the Muffin Man Tea set. This comes with a toasted teacake, a slice of cake and a pot of tea. And add a side of Devonshire cream to make it a ‘cream tea’ morning treat! Especially if you have kids who love to play tea time with their dolls, this is such an adorable place to take them for the real thing! But in a laid-back setting, you won’t feel like they’re out of place.

Explore London’s Natural History Museum 

After loading up on a filling breakfast, if the rain is still pounding the ground outside, it’s time to escape to one of the city’s most amazing museums. London is known for its world-class museums, and the Natural History Museum is one of the best, located inside the most impressive Victorian buildings. Since this museum is FREE to enter, I often come here on rainy days just to sit inside the awe-inspiring interior. While the museum is for everyone, it focuses on appealing to each of its incredible collections to kids. They aim to educate children about the natural world fun and engagingly.

The museum is home to an enormous collection of specimens, artifacts, and interactive exhibits that explore the natural world and its history. One of the most popular attractions for children is the Dinosaurs Gallery. This series of rooms features a range of animatronic dinosaurs, fossils, and interactive displays that bring these ancient creatures to life. Children can also explore the earth galleries, which showcase the planet’s geological history. Including volcanoes, earthquakes, and other natural phenomena. Be sure not to miss exploring the Hintze Hall, which features a suspended blue whale skeleton. Walking underneath this enormous creature, you can truly be in awe of its size and scale!

Warm Up inside the V&A Cafe

After a morning of exploring the museum, you’ll likely be ready for a warm and comforting meal. London has no shortage of cozy restaurants where you can indulge in delicious comfort food. But one of my favourite places to go on a rainy day is London’s Food Halls. More than any other city I’ve visited, London has a wealth of indoor Food Halls and Markets where you can find something for any appetite. Ok, now I know what you might be thinking: another museum? But let me tell you, inside the Victoria and Albert Museum is one of the city’s most amazingly decorated food halls! The V&A is FREE to enter, so just walk inside and make your way to the museum cafe. When I say “museum cafe,” you might be picturing a small, cramped room with bare white walls and stuffy, boring food. Which is the exact opposite of what kids like. But nothing could be further from what you’ll find inside the V&A Cafe.

The V&A Cafe has three sumptuously decorated rooms for diners to enjoy as they escape the rain. Designed by James Gamble, William Morris, and Edward Poynter, the various opulently decorated cafeteria rooms reflect the eclectic tastes of the Victorian era. But they are still enjoyed immensely by guests today. 

Bring a Packed Lunch

And this place has tons of kids inside! So you don’t need to worry about keeping quiet. Many school groups eat here so you won’t feel out of place. The cafe even goes out of its way to cater to kids, offering children specialty lunchtime meal boxes. Perfectly suited for kids’ palettes and appetites. And while the prices might be more inflated than at a small local cafe, you can’t beat the ambiance. But, if you really want to save a few pounds, you can also bring in your own packed lunches. I often stopped by my local Pret-a-Manger on the way to the V&A cafe and enjoyed my packed lunch inside this stunning interior. 

Get Transported at South Kensington Books

After lunch, if the rain is still hitting the pavement, there’s no better place to escape than a cozy bookstore. And London is home to some of the world’s most iconic bookstores! One of my favourite little shopping streets is Thurloe Street in South Kensington. Amongst the rows of elegant, 19th-century Victorian and Georgian buildings, you’ll find the charming entrance to South Kensington Books. South Kensington Books is an independent bookshop open at this site since the 1940s. They have strived for over 75 years to source some of the best British books for their local community.

Because Kensington is such a popular spot for families, they always have a wonderful selection of unique British children’s books. I found many beautifully illustrated books here that delighted the little ones back home. Since the store is small enough, you can let the kids explore on their own without worrying they’re get lost, like in the larger, chain bookshops. This way, they can find something they’re interested in while you can peruse something for yourself!

Explore the World’s Oldest Toy Shop Hamley’s

When you can’t go out and enjoy the sights on a rainy day, it’s the perfect time to hit the shops! London is known for its incredible shopping, and there are plenty of indoor destinations where you can stay dry while discovering all the wonders London stores offer. Hamley’s Toy Store is one of the most iconic places to bring your kids in London. Hamleys is world famous, holding the honour of being the world’s oldest toy store! The store opened in 1760 as a toy shop specializing in Noah’s Ark sets. It has expanded across seven floors, covering over 50,000 square feet. It is the oldest toy store and the world’s largest.

But Hamleys is not just any toy store; it’s a magical and enchanting world with live demonstrations, interactive displays, and fun activities that the kids can participate in. Regardless of whether you buy anything or not! 

Dine at Dishoom Covent Garden

London’s dining scene is wonderfully diverse, offering a range of cozy spots perfect for those grey, rainy evenings. When looking for a great place to dine on a chilly, rainy night, you’re looking for somewhere that combines comfort, warmth, and delightful cuisine. 

Dishoom Covent Garden, inspired by the old Irani cafés of Bombay, is a vibrant and welcoming spot perfect for large families. The restaurant’s chic decor creates a warm and inviting atmosphere for a cold and rainy evening. The aromatic spices from the kitchen and the gentle buzz of conversation add to its lively yet cozy ambiance. Dishoom offers a unique take on Indian cuisine with a menu that blends traditional Bombay flavours with a modern twist, creating a diverse and compelling culinary experience. Which I know might not sound like anything your kids would enjoy (especially if they’re picky eaters), but stick with me!

While Iranian cuisine might seem inaccessible for most kids, this restaurant prides itself on serving delicious food for kids and adults alike, no matter how familiar they are with Iranian food. While kids can enjoy everything off the regular menu, they also have a special chote (little) menu for kids with smaller portions, very little spice, but just as nice. And features the worldwide favourite kids meal item: chicken tenders, Dishoom style.

Be Awed at The Lion King

After a full day of exploring London’s rainless interiors, there’s nothing like settling in for one of London’s fantastical theatre shows! The Lyceum Theatre has been home to the world-famous musical The Lion King for years. And there is a good reason it’s stuck around for so long. The Lion King is one of the world’s most beloved and iconic musicals, based on the Disney animated film of the same name. But the stage adaptation of the musical is a breathtaking production.

The show features intricate costumes, elaborate masks, and life-sized puppets of animals that bring the show to life. And vibrant colours and dynamic performances bring the African savannah to London. It’s a must-see show for those looking to be transported to the Pride Lands. And be immersed in the world of Simba, Timon, Pumbaa, and the entire cast of memorable characters. While it’s more for the kids, adults will love the experience just as much!

Late Night Drink at Chin Chin Dessert Club

After your evening’s entertainment, if you’ve still got the energy, the best place to wind down on a rainy night is inside a cozy late-night spot perfect for the kids. On a rainy evening in London, a warm cup of hot cocoa is the best thing for kids. And the best place to have a great one is the Chin Chin Dessert Club! While the shop might be best known for its ice cream, it also offers unique and exciting hot chocolate flavours. Their signature Chin Chin Hot Chocolate has a gooey marshmallow fluff on top! But they also have seasonal variations like their Snowball Cookie Hot Chocolate.

As we wrap up our journey through London’s myriad of rainy day activities for kids, it’s clear that the city has no shortage of options to keep your little ones engaged and entertained, even when the weather isn’t cooperating. On a rainy day, there’s nothing quite like a hot cup of coffee or tea to start your day. And in London, there is no shortage of cozy cafes where you can curl up with a warming breakfast. In the centre of Fitzrovia is an old iron gate. Behind it, you’ll spot a stairwell leading you down into one of the best-hidden gems in London. Down below the surface, you are led into a stunning slice of history inside the Attendant Cafe. This quaint coffee shop is housed inside a former Victorian public restroom. Yes, you heard that right! This cafe serves up great coffee and delicious brunch options, all inside a beautifully restored Victorian interior. Enjoying your morning brew here, surrounded by the fantastical historical furnishings, is such a special way to start your day. Another hidden away location that doesn’t care about the rain.

Explore The Wallace Collection

After loading up on a filling breakfast, if the rain is still pounding the ground outside, it’s time to escape to one of the city’s most amazing museums. London is known for its world-class museums. And the Wallace Collection is a true gem among London’s many cultural institutions. It is often considered the best museum to visit for art lovers. Housed within a stunning 18th-century townhouse, the Wallace Collection boasts a breathtaking array of art. It includes everything from paintings, sculptures, porcelain, and furniture but is displayed like a living, personal collection rather than a stuffy, curated gallery. Visitors can explore works from renowned artists such as Titian, Rembrandt, and Fragonard. 

The museum itself is a work of art, featuring lavish period-styled rooms and elegant architecture. Stepping into the Wallace Collection feels like stepping back in time. A visit allows guests to immerse themselves in a historical and artistic ambiance.

Unlike some larger, more crowded museums in London, the Wallace Collection offers a more intimate and tranquil setting. Visitors can take their time to admire the art, reflect, and connect with each piece on a deeper level. I love escaping from the rain here, where the lavish, texture wallpaper envelopes me in a warm blanket of awe!

Warm Up with Market Comfort Food inside Mercato Mayfair

After a morning of exploring the museum, you’ll likely be ready for a warm and comforting meal. London has no shortage of cozy restaurants where you can indulge in delicious comfort food. But one of my favourite places to go on a rainy day are London’s Food Halls. London stands out with its abundant indoor Food Halls and Markets, catering to every appetite. The Mercato Mayfair is an enchanting food hall housed in a restored historic building that was once St. Mark’s Church. This exquisitely renovated space retains much of its original architectural beauty, including stained glass windows and intricate stone details, creating a breathtaking backdrop for its main purpose as a vibrant food market.

The old nave has been cleared out of the old church pews. Instead, this area is transformed into a modern cafeteria-style shared-seating dinner room with rainbow-coloured tables. Adding a modern pop of colour to the old Greek revival architecture. The vibrant stalls beckon you in with their array of food from all over the world! From Italian pasta and pizza to Japanese sushi, Mexican street food, and Middle Eastern delicacies, there’s something to satisfy every palate. It’s a true paradise for food enthusiasts eager to explore a world of flavours in one place. In the basement, you’ll find a small brewery where they make the beer right on-site! Booths have been slotted into the old crypt where you and your friends can escape the rain! And enjoy a pint of beer or glass of gin.

Get Lost inside Daunt Books Marylebone

After lunch, if the rain is still hitting the pavement, there’s no better place to escape than a cozy bookstore. And London is home to some of the world’s most iconic bookstores! A visit to Daunt Books in Marylebone is a delightful journey for artsy book lovers. Located in the heart of Marylebone, this iconic bookstore exudes the dark academic aesthetic. Edwardian oak galleries, antique stained glass windows, emerald green walls and inviting décor all exude that old literary style.

Daunt Books is renowned for specializing in travel literature and hosts an unrivalled collection of travel guides. But for anyone interested in art, these travel books provide so many exciting insights into art from around the world. Pick up any book on the shelves, and you’ll be transported to far-off lands! All while in in the dry comfort of the Daunt library. In addition to travel books, Daunt Books offers a curated selection of chic stationary. Making it a one-stop destination for creative and artistic souls.

Explore London’s Most Artful Department Store: Liberty London

When you can’t go out and enjoy the sights on a rainy day, it’s the perfect time to hit the shops! London is known for its incredible shopping, and there are plenty of indoor destinations where you can stay dry. If you’re looking to explore one of London’s most fantastic department stores, which specializes in amazing artistic pieces, you must check out Liberty London. Liberty is an iconic department store in the heart of London, known for its stunning architectural features. Get a Drink at the Fitzroy Tavern

After your evening’s entertainment, if you’ve still got the energy, the best place to wind down on a rainy night is inside a cozy pub. The Fitzroy Tavern is a historic pub with a rich history dating back to the 1880s! The old pub was frequented by famous literary figures like George Orwell, Dylan Thomas, and George Bernard Shaw. The pub was a gathering place for the Fitzrovia Group, a circle of bohemian artists, writers, and intellectuals who lived and worked in the Fitzrovia area during the 1920s and 1930s. The artistic history of this pub makes it the perfect spot for art lovers to hide away from the rain while enjoying a hearty pint of ale.

Christmas Eve in London is a hectic day of the year, so as many bookings as you can make in advance will help ensure you don’t miss out on the fun. But never pass up the chance to walk up and see if there have been any cancellations, especially at Christmas. You never know when someone’s plans will fall through, and you can swoop in to grab those opportunities.

Fortitude Bakehouse

To start your Perfect Christmas Eve in London, we need to grab a festive breakfast! As our second stop on the tour is located in Bloomsbury, one of the best places to start your morning is at Fortitude Bakehouse. Fortitude Bakehouse is one of the city’s finest artisanal bakeries tucked away in a charming corner of the city. Fortitude Bakehouse takes its craft seriously. Their bread, from sourdough to ciabatta, is made using traditional techniques, high-quality ingredients, and a dash of innovation. But it’s not just about the bread. Fortitude Bakehouse also boasts a delectable selection of pastries that are as pleasing to the eye as they are to the taste buds. From flaky croissants to fruit-filled danishes, these sweet and savoury treats are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or an anytime snack.

Charles Dickens Museum

After grabbing your sweet treats and a large coffee, take a walk east along Guilford Street, turning down Doughty Street towards the bright red door at #48. This old Georgian townhouse was the former London home of legendary author Charles Dickens. Today, it has been preserved and transformed into the Charles Dickens Museum.

Inside, the museum is dedicated to celebrating the life and work of the renowned Victorian novelist. Dickens lived with his family from 1837 to 1839. This was a significant period in Dickens’s life as he wrote several of his most famous works during his residence in this house, including Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby.

Visitors to the museum on Christmas Eve can take a guided tour of the meticulously restored and furnished rooms of the Dickens family home. And at Christmas, you’ll be in awe of Victoria’s Christmas decorations that cover the house. Holly garlands twist up the staircase, and red ribbons are tied on every little surface around the house.

The decor gives guests an idea of how Victorians would have been getting ready to celebrate Christmas. Just like many characters from Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. On Christmas Eve Day, all guests to the house will receive a free mince pie and mulled wine (or soft drinks for the kids). 

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

For lunch, take a walk along Grays Inn Road to find yourself at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub. Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese boasts a history that stretches back several centuries. The current building dates to 1667. The pub is known for its long association with literary and journalistic figures, and it has been a favoured haunt of many famous writers, including the one and only Charles Dickens. As well as Mark Twain and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The pub retains its historic and atmospheric charm with its low ceilings, wooden beams, dark wood panelling, and cozy, interconnected rooms. It offers a glimpse into the kind of taverns common in 17th-century London. One of the most striking features of Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is its multiple fireplaces, which are especially inviting during the colder months.

While the pub doesn’t go all out with its decorations, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese incorporates traditional Christmas celebrations into its festive menu. Everything from chicken & apricot terrine, hand-carved turkey, or red onion and chestnut roast for vegetarians. Be sure to end it all with Christmas pudding for dessert.

Somerset House

From Fleet Street, walk west across the Strand toward Somerset House. The Duke of Somerset once owned the property, but today, the building is often used to host events centred around arts and education. At Christmas, the square in front of Somerset House is transformed into a giant fairytale-like ice skating rink. A massive 40-foot twinkling Christmas tree stands watch over the skaters.

Be sure to book tickets for skating, especially on Christmas Eve, well in advance. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to enjoy an iconic Christmas activity set in a beautiful historic London landmark. The best way to enjoy Christmas ever in London.

Southbank Centre Winter Market

After all that skating, it’s time to warm up with some mulled wine, cider or hot chocolate. For this, we need to make our way across Waterloo Bridge to the Southbank Centre Winter Market. This traditional alpine-style Christmas market is made all the more atmospheric by its’ gorgeous location set along the famed Thames River. Plus, you also get stunning views of the London Eye above you as you peruse the goods in the market.

Over 90 wooden chalets lined the edge of the Southbank, covered in a canopy of thousands of twinkle lights. At the edge of the market, a vintage carousel delights young and old as it spins around playing Christmas tunes.

Wandering the stalls here, you can find everything from festive indulgences to Christmas street food and handmade arts and crafts. My favourite stall was the unique map seller. Buying a vintage map of London feels like the perfect gift to bring home as a souvenir of your London travels. Winter classics like raclette, chocolate-covered marshmallow kisses, dutch pancakes, and even warm cheese toasties can be found as you stroll.

Trafalgar Square

Walk back over the Golden Jubilee Bridge to the famous Trafalgar Square. Here, you’ll find another bustling Christmas market next to the National Gallery and Nelson’s Column. The location adds so much to the atmosphere and overall charm of the market. The market features a variety of stalls and vendors, offering a wide range of holiday-themed foods and gifts. You can find traditional Christmas decorations, ornaments, winter clothing items, funky jewellery and London souvenirs.

But we aren’t here for the market per se, but for the music. Every day in December there are carol performances between 4 pm and 8 pm. Over 40 carol groups gather here throughout the holiday season to bring festive cheer to the onlookers and raise money for charitable organizations. You see them out in full force on Christmas Eve, getting everyone excited for Christmas mornings.

Dishoom Covent Garden

If you are in the mood for something a little different but still a staunchly popular place in London to eat on Christmas Eve, head up the road to Dishoom Covent Garden. Dishoom is a series of restaurants known for their homage to the Irani cafés of Bombay. Stepping inside, you’ll be immediately enveloped in nostalgic décor that transports you to the bustling streets of Bombay. At Christmas, the restaurant is adorned with festive decorations, stars hanging from the ceiling and a glowing, warm, inviting atmosphere.

Dishoom offers a special Christmas Feast menu for the holiday season. This menu features a blend of traditional Indian flavours with a festive twist. Dishes include Turkey Raan (marinated and slow-cooked turkey leg infused with Indian spices and flavours), tenderstem broccoli, chilli sprouts, spiced cranberry chutney and Mince Pie Kulfi. Indian food is important to the fabric of London’s food scene, and Dishoom is one of the most iconic locations to try this cuisine.

Covent Garden

After dinner, explore Covent Garden by heading to the old Covent Garden Market. This historic marketplace is steeped in centuries of tradition. But at Christmas time, it is one of the most festive centres in London. The market’s elegant Piazza, adorned with neoclassical architecture and lively street performances, is brimming with twinkle lights, Christmas trees, oversized wreaths and the smell of mulled wine emanating in the air.

Also, outside the Piazza, you’ll always find some special exhibitions. In years past, there was a special Frozen Christmas Village. And last year, Dolce and Gabanna set up a multicoloured light display that made for awe-inspiring photos!

Apple Market

Covent Garden’s Apple Market dates back to the 17th century when it was a bustling fruit and vegetable market. Today, it houses a crafts and antiques market. Walking inside, you will be overwhelmed by the fantastical giant silver and gold disco ornaments hanging from the ceiling. Creating a kaleidoscope of lights reflecting off every surface. Oversized mistletoe chandeliers also dangle above, inviting romantic Christmas kisses.

Covent Garden Christmas Tree

You’ll find the mammoth Covent Garden Christmas tree outside the Apple Market! This Christmas tree is the largest hand-picked tree in all of London. In addition to this, the tree was grown at the same tree farm where the Royal family gets their Christmas trees. So it’s perhaps the poshest tree in London as well! It takes organizers over 300 hours to decorate the tree. And they even used a cherry picker to get those baubles to the top.

The area outside near the Christmas Tree is where visitors can get the chance to see “snow” falling in London. The snow falls every hour on the hour, so arrive accordingly. Sure, it might be fake snow made of soap, but how everyone erupts with delights really is the cherry on top of Christmas Eve celebrations.

Mayfair’s Christmas lights

From Covent Garden, we’re going to take the scenic route towards Westminster via Piccadilly Street. Make your way west towards the famous Piccadilly Circus. Although this intersection is always one of the busiest in London, it’s worth stopping here to look up at Regent Street.

Regent Street

Named after King George, the Prince Regent who reigned over England from 1820 to 1830, this sweeping road features ornate facades and regal terraces, which make it a timeless icon of London’s urban magnificence. The Regent Street lights are my favourite Christmas light display in the whole city. Soaring above the passersby are these giant “spirits” with sparkling wings. Many people refer to these as angels, but they are, in fact, officially called the spirits of Regent Street.

The decorations were inspired by historic Christmas lights displayed initially on Regent Street that featured traditional angels playing trumpets. The illuminations were created with the input of the Crown since Regent Street is owned by the Royal Family, and they must approve everything. The spirits are made up of over 300,000 lights. Their golden 17-meter wingspan reaches across the entire length of the street. Watching over delighted shoppers. The lights glitter and flash, giving the effect of the fluttering wings. Almost as if they could simply take off at any moment.

Fortnum & Mason

Walking along Picadilly, you’ll pass the iconic Fortnum & Mason department store. Fortnum & Mason goes all out on their Christmas displays during the holidays. Their award-winning window displays bring smiles to everyone passing them. They transform the facade into a giant advent calendar, each exterior window numbered from one to twenty-five, decorated with lush garlands and cheerful twinkle lights. As the month passes, the numbers are illuminated individually, like doors opening on a massive advent calendar.

Bond Street

Just across from Fortnum’s is Old Bond Street. Bond Street is home to some of the most prestigious and expensive shops like Tiffany & Co, Sotheby’s and Bonhams. The Christmas installations along Bond Street are made to look larger-than-life! Framing the entire street are these twinkling designs made to emulate peacock feathers.

The peacock feathers honour a group called the Bond Street Loungers, who, in 1820, became well-known for their fabulous fashions. They often wore expensive wigs and were seen strutting up and down Bond Street as if they owned it. They were also often called the “peacocks,” and the Christmas lights shine on to commemorate their daring fashions.

Above the intersections are these amazing crowns that incorporate those same peacock designs but so subtly that only those in the know will see them.

Many of the high-end shops on the street go ALL OUT. Cartier, Fenwick, Dior, Stellar McCartney and Ralph Lauren spend thousands on decking out this exterior facade for the holidays. Despite being some of London’s most expensive shops, you don’t need to spend a dime to enjoy their beautiful lighting displays.

St. James Street

Make your way down St. James’s Street, stopping in front of Lock & Co. Hatters and Berry Bros. & Rudd. These historic stops often have some of the best exterior Christmas displays; if they are still open, you should consider popping inside!

St James’s Park

From St. James Street, walk along Marlborough Road, and cut through St James’s Park. St. James’s Park is situated in the City of Westminster, bounded by Buckingham Palace to the west, The Mall (a grand ceremonial avenue) to the north, Horse Guards to the east, and Birdcage Walk to the south. St. James’s Park has a rich history from the early 17th century. It was originally developed as a deer park for King James I. But later, it was transformed into a formal garden by King Charles II. The park has retained much of its historical layout and character to this day.

The park is known for its stunning landscape, featuring a large lake, tree-lined avenues, meadows, flowerbeds, and well-manicured lawns. Even in the winter, the lake is home to various waterfowl, including swans and ducks. Late at night, St. James’s Park is a great place for a leisurely walk as it is such a peaceful and contemplative place to wander on Christmas Eve.

The Feathers Pub

Wile the night away and warm up before the evening Christmas service inside one of my favourite Westminster pubs, the Feathers. The Feathers Pub is a traditional British pub known for its classic British pub ambiance. Even on a cold day, you can find a warm and welcoming atmosphere inside.

The Christmas decor here is unrivalled. I love how the staff seem to get into the Christmas spirit and decorate every inch of the bar with festive baubles and twinkling Christmas trees. Having a Christmas Eve pint here feels like having a drink with friends, even if you’re travelling solo.

If you’re still hungry, consider ordering one of their award-winning hand-made meat pies. But at this time of night, the best thing to have is a perfectly poured cask ale, a glass of fine wine.

Westminster Abbey Christmas Eve Service

Even if you’re not religious, I highly recommend attending the Westminster Abbey Christmas Eve Service. Westminster Abbey has a rich history dating back centuries. Throughout the years, many important royal events have taken place here for coronations and funerals. Most recently, it was here that King Charles III was crowned. But every year, since its construction, there has been a Christmas Eve service.

The Christmas Eve services include singing Christmas hymns, music from the Abbey Choir, a sermon and Holy Communion. The service will last approximately an hour and a half. I didn’t participate in the communion, and you can absolutely sit this out if you prefer to attend the service more as on onlooker than a participant. But always remember to be respectful and remember no photos are allowed during services.

Booking is required in advance to get your tickets. Tickets are free, but you must book in advance as seating is limited. Tickets will be made available in mid-November. But every year, limited tickets are available on the day. If you don’t have an advanced ticket, arrive about an hour before the start of service and line up in the queue. 

After the service, you’ll exit on the Christmas streets of London. All public transport will be shut down as the service runs after midnight. This includes buses, trams, London Underground and London Overground trains. Plan around this in advance, as you’ll either walk home, take a taxi or Uber, or hop on an electric scooter or bike rental. If your home base is closer to St. Paul’s Cathedral, you might consider attending their Christmas Eve service instead.

Museums

Sir John Soane’s Museum

Tucked away in the quiet residential neighbourhood of Lincoln’s Inn Fields is the former home of one of London’s most acclaimed architects, Sir John Soane. But his old Georgian home, a Museum, isn’t just a boring old collection of architectural drawings. Inside you’ll find a fascinating and intimate peek into Soane’s personal life and outstanding collection of art and antiquities. 

What sets this museum apart is its unconventional layout, with rooms and galleries overflowing with objects and curiosities. It is arranged in a way that invites visitors to explore and discover unexpected surprises. Wandering through an endless labyrinth. Making your way around corners and secret rooms, you’ll find paintings by Canaletto, Hogarth, and Turner. Down in the crypts, you’ll discover ancient Egyptian objects, including the sarcophagus of Seti I.

In addition to the art collection, a tour through Soane’s home is an exemplary model his visionary architectural styles. This includes his ingenious use of light and darkness to create drama, emphasis, grandeur and intimacy. It’s a fantastic discovery for anyone looking for a unique museum in the centre of London.

Tate Britain

While the Tate Britain might have the cache of the “Tate” name, this museum is often considered one of London’s Hidden Gems. Almost always you’ll find people flocking to its more famous younger brother, the Tate Modern. But this museum is incredible in its own right. And personally, I find that its smaller size allows visitors to explore it more easily without feeling overwhelmed.

The museum, housed in a beautiful 19th-century building in Westminster, is home to an extensive collection of British art from the 16th century to the present. On a visit to England, I think it’s important to see more than just Britain’s stolen antiquities, but rather works of art from British artists themselves. These artworks help tell the story of British art and how it influenced other styles and artists around the world.

The museum’s permanent collection includes works by some of the greatest artists in British history, including J.M.W. Turner, Sir John Everett Millais, Francis Bacon, David Hockney and Henry Moore. In addition to its impressive permanent collection, Tate Britain hosts several temporary exhibitions throughout the year. These showcase the work of up-and-coming British contemporary artists and give you some insight into where Britain is headed artistically. I love this museum for its memorable works of art like Ophelia that I’ve seen in art books for years and finally get the chance to admire in person.

Wallace Collection

Although the Wallace Collection is considered one of the “best museums” in London, it is often one of the most overlooked. Just a stone’s throw away from Oxford Street, this magnificent museum houses a world-renowned collection of fine and decorative arts. When people hear decorative arts they might assume it’s nothing more than a collection of old furniture. But hidden among the Victorian stylings are some of the world’s most iconic paintings, like The Swing by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, The Laughing Cavalier by Frans Hals and Edward V and the Duke of York in the Tower by Delaroche.

Hertford House

But one of my favourite things about this museum is how personal it is. Hertford House has been home to the Marquess of Hertford since the 18th century. This wealthy family loved to collect and buy art and would display it here in the home. But it was the 4th Marquess, Sir Richard Wallace, who really put this art-collecting family on the map. His collection was so large and prestigious that he resided in Paris but used this house as his personal museum. 

When he died, he bequeathed the entire collection, along with the house, to the public. And while some of the rooms inside the house, like the stables and smoking room, were converted, other rooms in the house remain exactly as they would have looked when the house was owned by Sir Richard Wallace. Each room and gallery is arranged in a series of themes. Each with unique character and charm, creating a journey of discovery through the world the Wallace art collection.

Treasures of the British Library

I know what you’ll say, “the British Library isn’t a museum? Why is it listed here?” The British Library is a functional library with over 150 million books. Students and academics pour in through these doors daily to pursue and study the collection within. But inside is a hidden treasure that the public can enjoy. And that is the Treasures of the British Library. This small exhibition space inside the library contains the world’s greatest collections of books, manuscripts, and other literary treasures. 

The collections include everything from ancient papyrus scrolls and medieval manuscripts to modern first editions and rare and valuable books. Visitors can explore the vast archives and marvel at some of the world’s most famous literary works. This includes original copies of Shakespeare’s plays, first editions of Jane Austen novels, a Gutenberg Bible, and, most popular, an assemblage of lyrics and handwritten notes from the Beatles. The exhibition is even home to the original copy of the Magna Carta!

I was amazed by the absolute treasures I found in here. As a huge fan of the Gormenghast books, I was in awe of the hand-drawn characters made by Mervyn Peake himself. An insight into his process I would have never imagined before. The permanent collection space is quiet and free to enter, and a definite hidden gem for book lovers visiting London!

Leighton & Sambourne House

If you love history and interior design, boy, oh boy, do I have a hidden gem for you! The Leighton & Sambourne House are two Victorian townhomes located in the peaceful neighbourhood of Kensington. These homes have been transformed into public museums for visitors to explore. Both houses were the former residences of two famous British artists.

Leighton and Sambourne

Leighton House was home to Frederic, Lord Leighton, a leading British painter of the Victorian era. Leighton’s style was characterized by its attention to detail, vivid colours, and classical influences. He was known for his portraits, landscapes, and historical scenes, and his work often featured mythological and biblical themes. His most famous painting is Flaming June, one of the most iconic paintings of the period.

Sambourne House, on the other hand, was the home of Edward Linley Sambourne, a celebrated illustrator for Punch magazine. Punch magazine was a weekly satirical publication that was founded in 1841. Punch published cartoons, articles, and poetry that mocked the upper classes, politicians, and other authority figures. Both men were avid collectors and artists who wanted to make their homes a place of wonder and delight.

Leighton House

A visit to the Leighton house is such a delight as walking inside, you will enter an entirely unexpected world. The design of Leighton’s home and studio was heavily influenced by his travels to the Middle East, not Victorian Britain. Throughout the home, elements of Islamic art are woven into architecture. While the exterior mostly looks consistent with other red brick Victorian houses of the time, upon a second glance, you’ll notice the ornate domed roof, which gives the place a striking appearance.

The house’s interiors are equally impressive, with many rooms adorned with intricate mosaics, plasterwork, and paintings. The highlight of the house is undoubtedly the Arab Hall, a large reception room designed to display Leighton’s collection of Islamic tiles and ceramics. The room is decorated with a stunning mosaic frieze, ornate stucco work, and a fountain imported from Damascus. In addition to the fantastic architecture, the home contains a collection of Leighton’s paintings. As well as artworks by his contemporaries.

Sambourne House

Just a few doors down, inside the Sambourne house, you can marvel at a style called ‘Aestheticism.’ Aestheticism was a popular artistic movement that emerged in the late Victorian era in Britain. The idea of Aestheticism was influenced by the philosopher and art critic Walter Pater. Pater advocated for the pursuit of beauty and aesthetic pleasure as the highest ideal in life. I find it very similar to the popularity of maximalism we see today.

Aestheticism was also inspired by Japanese art and design. It featured stylized natural motifs, muted earthy colours like green, brown and blue, and an overall harmonious approach to furnishing. Sambourne felt furniture should be appreciated as an art form and not just viewed as utilitarian. He rejected the popularity of mass-produced furniture thanks to the growth of industrialization in Victorian London.

Whether you visit one of both homes, you’ll be delighted you did as they offer a unique and fascinating insight into two very different artists living in the Victorian era.

The Painted Hall

A trip to the peaceful borough Greenwich is a wonderful way to escape the dense city centre of London. You can get to Greenwich on the train, but I love taking the riverboat from Embankment Pier. It’s a fantastic way to view the city from another perspective. While in Greenwich, you need to check out the illustrious Painted Hall. The Painted Hall is a stunning masterpiece of art and architecture located inside the Old Royal Naval College. 

The Painted Hall is often referred to as, “Britain’s Sistine Chapel.” You will be craning your neck for ages taking in the 40,000 square feet of painted walls and ceilings. Britain’s finest examples of baroque art. The murals depict over 200 characters who tell the story of Britain’s political, scientific and cultural achievements. It focuses primarily on Britain’s naval endeavours woven amongst images of allegorical figures and scenes from mythology. The central mural focuses on the accessions to the throne of King William III and Queen Mary II in 1688 and George I in 1714. Key moment in the creation of Britain as a world power.

In addition to its stunning artwork, the Painted Hall is also an architectural marvel. It was originally designed as the dining room for pensioners at the Royal Hospital. But it wasn’t long before everyone wanted a peak inside! And before long, the building was opened up to the public to be admired as a museum.

Dennis Severs’ House

One of the most interesting museums in London can be found in the old historic neighbourhood of Spitalfields in the heart of London’s East End. The Dennis Severs’ House was the brainchild of artist Dennis Severs. He purchased the property in 1979 and spent the next 20 years transforming it into a living work of art. The house is a meticulous recreation of an 18th-century home. It offers visitors a glimpse into the lives of its fictional Huguenot silk-weaving family. Severs carefully curated every detail of the house, filling it with period-appropriate furniture, textiles, and decorations. Each room evoking the sights, sounds, and smells of a bygone era.

Visitors to Dennis Severs’ House are encouraged to experience the space as a living entity and to immerse themselves in the fictional world. They can see and hear the family’s daily activities as they explore the house, from the sound of footsteps on the stairs to the smell of cooking wafting from the kitchen. The museum’s immersive and interactive nature makes this place such a hidden gem.

Food & Drink

Host Cafe

I stumbled upon Host Cafe by complete accident. I was searching for architectural wonders in the area and knew St. Mary Aldermary was home to the most amazing Gothic interiors. But when I stepped inside, I was shocked to find that while the church’s interior had remained the same, a tiny coffee shop had been set up at the back. Visitors could enjoy a fancy latte while admiring the beautiful historic architecture inside. They had even set up a series of larger tables behind the nave where people were clacking away on their laptops, and small groups were having hushed meetings.

The original church was built in the 17th century by Sir Christopher Wren, the master builder of St. Paul’s Cathedral. The original church features have been preserved through this readaptation of the space. To ensure it lasts another lifetime. The soaring vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and wooden pews make even a simple coffee break feel like a special event. This was absolutely my favourite spot in the city to come and relax. All while watching the light stream in through those beautiful stained glass windows. A magical place to be. And the perfect escape on a rainy day.

St Martins Café in the Crypt

Café in the Crypt is one of those spots in London that is quite literally under your feet, but you might never know it’s there! This charming coffee cafe is just a stone’s throw from Trafalgar Square in the historic St. Martin-in-the-Fields church crypt. Yes, that’s right, you can dine and drink inside an 18th-century crypt. The entrance to the cafe is located just off Charing Cross Road, to the left of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. You’ll see a tall glass column with a winding staircase leading you down into the Crypt. There is also a small accessibility lift to help anyone in the basement which requires it.

As soon as you enter the cafe, you’ll be struck by the dramatic low lighting and spotlights that cast a warm glow to highlight the beautiful old brick vaults. Under your feet, you might be shocked that the old church tombstones are still there, with curious memories of the past for you to marvel at. The menu at Café in the Crypt is diverse and offers a range of coffee drinks, teas, and light bites. You can even come here for a luxury afternoon tea at only £18 per person.

One of the special features of the Café in the Crypt is its live music program, called “Crypt Lates,” which features a range of talented musicians performing jazz, classical, and other genres. The acoustics in the Crypt are excellent, and the music adds to the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. Check their website for upcoming performances.

Regency Cafe

If you’re looking to step back in time, there is perhaps no better place to visit than the Regency Cafe. This retro diner has been serving classic British breakfasts since 1946. And has become a beloved institution in London’s Westminster neighbourhood. The interior of the Regency Cafe is practically unchanged from the 40s. Bright red linoleum floors, Formica tables, red and white gingham curtains and, of course, photographs of Tottenham Hotspur football players decorate the nostalgic interior.

It’s a place packed with character and charm and always filled with locals and visitors alike. The owner is almost always behind the counter. And I was so delighted by how he always remembered everyone’s name after their order. Making it feel like you’ve been there 100 times before, even on your first visit.

But what sets the Regency Cafe apart is the food quality. The portions are more than generous, the ingredients are fresh, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. It’s the perfect spot for a hearty breakfast before exploring the city.

Mercado Mayfair

If it’s a food hall set inside a beautiful historic building with a real wow factor that you’re after, you need to check out the Mercado Mayfair. Just off busy Oxford Street, the Mercato Mayfair Market offers up fresh, artisanal and sustainably sourced food. All in the heart of this amazingly restored church. Thanks to this £5 million restoration, the original 19th-century church has been reclaimed and transformed into a modern eatery. Welcoming people from the neighbourhood and beyond.

The large nave has been transformed into a cafeteria-style dining room. And various food stalls are located inside the old side chapels. The market offers a range of unique culinary experiences, from authentic Neapolitan pizza to dumplings and, of course, fish and chips! An actual gin and beer distillery is hidden away in the basement’s crypt. Here you can sit inside a cozy alcove and have your very own beer flight tasting. All with alcohol made right under the floorboards. And for one last treat, make a trip up to the rooftop! Here you can get a small but stunning view of the city!

Maltby Street Market

Another of London’s Hidden Gems is the Maltby Street Market. Borough Market, while historic and amazing, is often overrun. And what was once the centre of the alternative scene, Camden Market has sold out and become a hub for big brands vying to disguise themselves as counterculture. But luckily for us, there is still one food market in London that feels like it has remained authentic to its roots. Maltby Street Market is tucked away in a railway arch in Bermondsey in South London. As you pass under the welcome arch, you feel like entering a secret garden and foodie oasis.

The narrow alleyways have stalls selling everything from freshly baked bread and pastries to cheese, meat, and seafood. There are also several bars and breweries offering craft beers and cocktails. Remember, even the less popular food market in London are still prone to be very busy. So best to get here early to beat the crowds and avoid certain stalls that can sell out.

Sights

Pickering Place

One of the best ways to explore the hidden recesses of London is to find these back courtyards. Tuckered away just off of some of the busiest streets in London. Often, you can go from throngs of people into an almost eerie silence as you pass through the alley into these oasis-like enclosures. One of my favourites has got to be Pickering Place. While the beauty in this square is one of its top qualities, it’s the history here that I find the most interesting.

This charming square is surrounded by iconic Georgian architecture and the original gas lamps that would have once set the area alight. While the area is a peaceful escape today, back in the 18th century, you would have found gambling dens, bear-baiting rings and even duelling grounds here. Because these courtyards were tucked away from the prying eyes of passing policemen, they were the perfect spots for these illicit activities. One of the most celebrated duels that were known to take place right here involved none other than Beau Brummel himself. He was known for being a confidante of King George IV and credited with popularizing the use of cravats in men’s fashion. 

Goodwin Court

Goodwin Court is another peaceful alleys in London that feels like it tells a whole story in just under a block of cobblestone roadway. Away from the bustling crowds, this charming courtyard near Covent Garden features some of the most striking architecture. And if it looks a little familiar to you, that is because this street was one of the areas that inspired the design of the wizard shopping street Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter novels and movies. But to me, this dark and almost ominous thoroughfare feels far more like Knockturn Alley. Where all the Dark Wizards came to do their sinister dealings…

The area itself dates back to the 17th century when it was known as Fishers Alley. Today, the architecture on display is a fantastic example of Georgian facades. The most impressive feature being the decorative window frames once used as window displays for the various businesses that would have lined this street. Be sure to stop and study the tiny details. From doorknockers to nameplates, as there is so much history painted into the architectural details of this street.

Fournier and Wilkes Street

Deep inside the streets once haunted by Jack the Ripper, in the heart of Spitalfields, are two of the most historic streets in London. Walking down these quiet cobblestone streets, you can get a feel for London at the turn of the 18th century. Fournier and Wilkes Street are considered one of the best-preserved examples of Georgian architecture in London. They are so period perfect that you’ll often see movies filming in the area as little to no set decoration is needed to send us back in time.

Many of the townhouses on Fournier and Wilkes Street were originally built as homes and workshops for the Huguenot weavers. Many retain their original features, including the high ceilings, elegant staircases, and large windows that allowed natural light to flood the weaving rooms. The architecture outside is characterized by its simple and elegant brick facades, sash windows, and wrought iron railings.

Southwark Cathedral

If you find yourself wanting to escape the crowds at Borough Market, consider a short visit to Southwark Cathedral. London has many famous churches, and with so many to see, Southwark often gets overlooked. This amazing cathedral dates back to the 12th century! For more than 800 years, people have been making the pilgrimage here. Looking inside and out, you’ll notice the patchwork nature of the architecture, reflecting its long history and the various stages of its construction.

The oldest part of the cathedral is the nave, built in the Romanesque style. The choir and transepts were added in the 13th and 14th centuries and built in the Early English Gothic style.

William Shakespeare’s Stained Glass

But one of the most interesting features of Southwark Cathedral is its association with William Shakespeare. It is believed that he worshipped in the cathedral when he lived in the area. In 2014, to commemorate the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth, a series of stained glass windows were created to honour the playwright. The three windows are located in the cathedral’s north transept, and each depicts scenes from one of Shakespeare’s plays. Below the series of windows is a sculpture of the man himself, reclining against a carved background of the city of London.

Cathedral Cat

Another unique part of a visit to the church is to see if you can spot their famous Cathedral Cat, Hodge. In 2008, the church found an abandoned cat had wandered in through the doors and taken up residence. But it was far from a nuisance; it patrolled the grounds and kept pesky mice away. No one had the heart to get it to leave, and soon the cat was as much a part of the heart and soul of the church. This cat was named Doorkins, and the public soon became obsessed with the little guy. So much so that the cat started its own Twitter account and inspired a children’s book, “Doorkins the Cathedral Cat.” Doorkins even met the Queen on her visit to the church in 2013.

Sadly, Doorkings passed away in 2020, leaving a hole in the hearts of all who visited the church. A new cathedral cat was sought out immediately and that is how Hodge came to live at the church. Hodge was rescued in the summer of 2020 and had a horrific growth on his face that had long been neglected. The church took care of the poor boy after his surgery, and he has since made a full recovery! Now, he is well loved by all those who liev, work and just visit the church.

The Theatre Mural in Shoreditch

Today, the Borough of Shoreditch is one of the best places in London to wander the streets and admire the incredible street art. It feels like no matter where you go, art permeates the entire neighbourhood. But one of my absolute favourite works of art in the area can be found on New Inn Broadway street. The whole facade is covered in a large mural depicting the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet. Juliet leans out of the large painted oval window at the top of the house and looks down below. At the bottom of the facade, we can see the image of Romeo beckoning up to her. While Shakespearan themes are an essential part of British culture, there is a more specific reason why this mural was painted in this particular location…

The First Shakespearean Theatre

Before Shakespeare’s Globe theatre was built, the first production of Romeo and Juliet ever to be performed occurred on this very spot. It was in a building called, very simply, ‘The Theatre.’ At the time, Shoreditch was where you could find anything from gambling dens to brothels and disorderly taverns. Theatres at the time weren’t the high-brow nights out they are today. Back then, a theatre would have fit right in with these places of low repute. After only 22 years, the Theatre was shut down. When it was dismantled, they unassembled the timber to use it to build portions of the new Globe theatre. How resourceful of these Elizabethans!

Pavillion Road

Pavillion Road is a delightful street in the heart of Chelsea. And while the entire street is home to a series of elegant Georgian townhouses, the stretch between Cadogan Gardens is where you’ll find a true hidden gem of London. Although it’s just one block long, this street is home to a huge collection of my favourite shops! As you pass under the welcoming swags of colourful bunting, you’ll enter what is dubbed “London’s longest and friendliest mews.” A British mews is a row of stables or carriage houses historically located behind grand townhouses or mansions.

Today, these old carriage houses have been converted into chic shops and restaurants, offering a range of goods and services from artisanal coffee, freshly baked bread, designer clothing, British cheese and unique stationery. Whether you’re looking to indulge in some of the best luxury foodies’ finds or simply soak up the atmosphere of one of London’s most picturesque streets, Pavillion Road is a must-visit destination!

Marylebone High Street

Whether looking for high-end fashion, artisanal chocolates, or handcrafted jewelry, you’ll find it all on Marylebone High Street. Since Marylebone High Street is just off the beaten path, away from the crowds of tourists that flock to other shopping areas in London, I find that you’ll often encounter fewer crowds and have a more relaxed shopping experience. And the street has a real sense of community, with many of the shops being family-owned and operated, giving it a distinctive local feel.

This old-fashioned and charming street, characterized by its elegant Georgian architecture, is one of my favourite spots to wander, window shop, and always stop inside Daunt Books to pick up my latest read.

Floris London

Floris is one of my favourite spots for a splurge in London. This luxurious perfumery has been a family operation since 1730! They received their first Royal Warrant when they made combs for King George IV. A Royal Warrant is a prestigious recognition granted by the royal family to companies or individuals who have supplied goods or services to the royal family for a minimum of five years. This warrant permits the company or person to display the royal coat of arms on their products, signifying that they are official suppliers to the royal family. It is one of the most significant marks of quality and excellence a business can get in Britain. And you can see the large royal coat of arms above the perfumery entrance.

All of the perfumes are made in Britain, using the finest essential oils and essences gathered from around the world. Floris is one of the few remaining independent perfumers in the city, and its elegant store and traditional approach to perfumery make it a true hidden gem. Coming to get perfume from this shop feels like a bucket list experience. Since scent is such a powerful memory trigger, I love picking up perfume while travelling to bring back all the memories of that holiday.

Buying Your Perfume

The store itself is a testament to the brand’s history and commitment to quality. The elegant shop features dark wood panelling, antique display cases, and a cozy seating area where you can sit and sample the fragrances at your leisure. If the full-size perfumes are too expensive, you can always opt for the smaller 10ml bottles that are around £22.00 each. A wonderful souvenir to come away with but at a price, more people can comfortably afford. Whether you’re looking for a signature scent or a special gift, Floris has something for everyone.

Peaceful Escapes

The Onion Garden

Hidden behind the otherwise stony Victoria Street is a true hidden gem called the Onion Garden. The garden was created by florist Jens Jakobsen. He transformed this previously austere concrete space into an enchanted micro-garden. The onion garden was inspired by the Egyptian’s worship of onions. They believed that the onion symbolized eternity as the anatomy of the onions was a circle-within-a-circle. Onions decorate the entire space along with other beautiful flowers and plant life.

Visitors can sit inside the micro-garden, enjoying a coffee amongst the flowers and plants all year long. They even had blankets to keep you warm in the winter. Jens wanted to help Londoners connect back to nature. And finding this spot was a lifesaver for me whenever I just wanted to zen out after a long day of exploring. And you don’t need to go far for that cup of coffee. FlatCap Coffee co opened a tiny coffee stall here where you can get some of the best brews in the city!

Postman’s Park

The tranquil Postman’s Park is enshrouded behind the shadow of St. Botolph’s Aldersgate church. Although it’s mere steps from the bustling financial district, it’s an oasis of peace. But aside from the lovely greenery and relaxing benches, what makes Postman’s Park truly special is its unique memorial to everyday heroes. The park is home to the Watts Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice. This striking monument honours brave men, women, and children who lost their lives while saving others.

The memorial consists of a series of ceramic tablets commemorating different acts of heroism. The tablets are inscribed with the hero’s name, age, occupation, and a brief description of their selfless act. The stories are poignant and heart-wrenching. And serve as a powerful reminder of the everyday heroism that often goes unnoticed in our busy lives.

If you’re a movie buff, you’ll also be interested to know that this park was used in filming the movie Closer, starring Jude Law and Natalie Portman. It is one of the more obscure filming locations in London but still one of the best!

Barbican Conservatory

Nestled in Finsbury, just north of the old City of London’s square mile, is what, at first glance, looks like the rainforest. And yet, here we are in the heart of London. This is the inside the Barbican Conservatory. This stunning oasis is one of the largest conservatories in the city. And is home to a breathtaking collection of exotic plants and trees from around the world.

The conservatory offers visitors the chance to unwind and soak up the beauty of nature. And get a literal breath of fresh air. The space is divided into different zones, each with unique plant life, including tropical rainforests, cacti gardens, and a desert zone.

Visitors can wander through the maze of pathways, taking in the plants’ vibrant colours and heady scents, and marvel at the stunning glass and steel architecture surrounding them. The conservatory also features several tranquil seating areas where visitors can relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Little Venice

Although London might be best known for its historic Thames River, another waterway here deserves your attention. Little Venice is a picturesque and charming area of London that is often overlooked by visitors to the city. In the northwestern corner of Paddington, Little Venice is a small community created around the old canals that connect at the central triangular Paddington basin. The canals of Little Venice were initially built in the early 19th century as part of the Grand Union Canal network, and today they offer a unique and peaceful way to explore the city. 

Visitors can take a boat ride along the canal or simply stroll along the towpath and admire the beautiful scenery. Many buildings surrounding the canals are gorgeous examples of Regency period architecture with white-painted stucco terraces and mansion blocks. But the most unique feature of the area is the quaint and colourful houseboats that line the canal’s edge. Owning a brick-and-mortar property in London has always been astronomical. And some early enterprising Londoners realized they could get prime real estate along the water. Today, there are even restaurants and cafes set inside floating barges along the river where you can grab a bite to eat or drink and enjoy the amazing views.

Highgate Cemetery

Although visiting a cemetery might seem like a depressing way to spend an afternoon, nothing could be further from the truth. Cemeteries are often beautiful places, wonderfully designed and filled with stunning greenery to make visitors, especially those in grief, feel a sense of peace. And Highgate Cemetery is no outlier. Located in north London, Highgate Cemetery is a large and sprawling graveyard known for its beautiful Victorian architecture, ornate tombs, and stunning funerary sculptures.

The cemetery was established in 1839 and quickly became one of the most fashionable places to be buried in London. Many of the city’s most notable figures, including Karl Marx, George Eliot, and Douglas Adams, are buried here. And their ornate tombs and memorials are a testament to their lasting legacies. Highgate Cemetery is divided into two parts: the East and West, each requiring a ticket to enter. The admission fees all go towards maintenance for his incredible outdoor oasis.

History of Afternoon Tea

Traditional British afternoon tea is a culinary ritual that dates back to the 19th century. The seventh Dutchess of Bedford, Anna, introduced it to the culinary scene in 1840. Anna was known to get famished by mid-afternoon and couldn’t wait for her evening meal, often served fashionably late, around 8 o’clock. Anna demanded a little nibble to make it through the day. Her request consisted of a pot of tea, bread and butter, and a slice of cake. She started inviting her friends over for this “afternoon tea.” They fell in love with it and brought it into their household. Within only a few years, afternoon tea was being served nationwide.

What is Afternoon Tea?

Afternoon tea is typically served on a tiered stand, with each level representing an integral part of the meal. The bottom level is filled with dainty finger sandwiches, always served with the crusts removed. The next tier is where you’ll find fresh scones with clotted cream and jam. And on top we have various cakes and pastries. Often the pastries you’ll find with afternoon tea are minature in size. Small macarons, mini tarts and slices of sponge cake are popular for being perfectly bite size. This is, of course, all served alongside a pot of tea.

The tea is an important part of the experience and is usually served in a teapot with a strainer. Classic blends such as English Breakfast, Earl Grey, and Darjeeling are popular, but other more exotic teas, such as green or herbal teas, may also be offered.

A traditional British afternoon tea is often enjoyed as a leisurely and indulgent experience, with guests encouraged to relax and enjoy the food, tea, and company. Many of my London afternoon tea experiences lasted well over three hours, with the pots of tea needing to be refilled on more than a few occasions. But despite the overall simplicity of the meal, afternoon tea is a pretty pricey affair. And often, it is saved for special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries or as a treat for friends and family.

The English Rose Café and Tea Shop $

The English Rose Café and Tea Shop is a charming, family-owned establishment in the heart of Grosvenor Place, just a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace. Known for its delightful afternoon tea, this cozy and inviting café offers a perfect respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. The interior is adorned with quaint vintage decor, with delicate floral wallpaper and lace curtains adding to the overall atmosphere of quaintness.

Their afternoon tea menu boasts a selection of freshly baked scones served with clotted cream and preserves. Dainty finger sandwiches cut into squares are filled with classic fillings such as cucumber and cream cheese, smoked salmon, and egg mayo. They cater to pescatarian and vegetarian diets but do not offer a gluten-free menu. On the top tier, you’ll get an assortment of pastries and cakes that are almost too beautiful to eat. My favourite was the slice of Victoria sponge, filled with fresh raspberry jam and cream! Their tea selection is equally impressive, with various loose-leaf teas and traditional blends.

The Wolseley $$

Afternoon tea at The Wolseley in London is an elegant and sophisticated affair with a French twist. Unlike some of the more traditionally British and homely interiors, the Wolseley afternoon tea is served in a beautifully restored 1920s-style dining room that exudes old-world charm and glamour. The atmosphere at the Wolseley is refined and sophisticated. The dining room is spacious and elegant, with high ceilings, polished marble floors, and plush leather banquettes to cozy up inside.

The tea service at The Wolseley contains all the traditional elements but the pièce de résistance are their selection of delicate french pastries. The pastries include treats such as miniature éclairs, Millefeuille, macarons and an added British favourite Battenberg cake.

The St. Ermin’s Tea Lounge $$$

The St. Ermin Tea Lounge‘s afternoon tea is a delightful experience inside a gorgeous Victorian Hotel that was once home to the centre of espionage in Britain during WWIII. Walking through the tree-line courtyard, you enter the reception room, which features the opulent plasterwork created by famous Victorian theatre designer J.P. Briggs. Due to the hotel’s proximity to the Houses of Parliament, this hotel was a favourite spot for politicians and spies to meet, including Winston Churchill.

St. Ermin Tea Room

The room is tastefully decorated with soft lighting, comfortable seating, and elegant table settings. The afternoon tea menu at St. Ermin is notable for its amazing finger sandwich fillings. While they stick to the traditional fillings conceptually, they really amp up the flavour with additional elements like preserved lemon in the prawns and Gin soaked smoked salmon. Plus, they have more variety in the bread to best complement the flavours of each sandwich.

I also found that the sweets served with the meal was the most inventive and daring. Salted caramel and chocolate cake, sea buckthorn cheesecake, coffee liqueur mousse on an amaretti biscuit, green tea and jasmine cake and even a cinnamon and hibiscus craqueline choux! The St. Ermin Tea Lounge also offers gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options for those with special dietary requirements.

If you can only have one-afternoon tea in London, this would be my pick! It’s right in the middle price-wise and set inside one of the most historic buildings in London. And serves up the most inventive flavours while still respecting the historical culinary traditions of afternoon tea.

Price: Afternoon Tea £43pp, £48pp with a glass of Champagne

The Rubens $$$$

The Rubens at the Palace is a luxurious hotel in the heart of London. Renowned for their sumptuous afternoon tea, the Rubens offers an unforgettable culinary experience in an elegant and sophisticated setting. The tea is served in the Palace Lounge, a plush and opulent room decorated with chandeliers, ornate mirrors, and rich fabrics, exuding a sense of grandeur and reality.

One of my favourite things about the seating here was the love seats facing the window overlooking the Royal Mews of Buckingham Palace. These were meant for two people, although I got one all to myself when I visited. This was the best seat in the house, in my opinion, because you got to watch so many people passing by, which I always find so entertaining. To add to the overall ambiance, the Rubens features a live pianist who creates a spectacular musical score to accompany your meal.

Royal Afternoon Tea

The Afternoon Tea served at the Ruben was inspired by the Royal family and Commonwealth. Being located so close to Buckingham Palace, they dubbed their menu “the Royal Afternoon Tea.” Many of their desserts contain the same seasonal produce that is in season in the Royal Orchards. The afternoon tea menu at the Rubens changes throughout the year. You’ll find special holiday menus; this year they even have a special selection for the King’s coronation.

I had my afternoon tea during the holidays and was delighted by their fantastical Christmas menu. The dishes featured classic holiday flavours transformed into bite-size desserts. Another element that makes the Rubens so special is their renowned pastry chefs. This year, the pastry kitchen at The Rubens is led by pastry chef Sarah Houghting. Houghting recently competed in Bake Off: The Professionals on Channel 4, making her a household name in Britain. But it’s not all about the desserts. I don’t want to undersell the amazing sandwiches I ate. The rare roast beef sirloin with horseradish cream served on beetroot bread was out of this world. And one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had at an afternoon tea.

Price: £70 per person or £90 with Champagne

The Ritz $$$$

For me, the penultimate experience was going to have Afternoon Tea at the Ritz Hotel in London. This was a bucket list experience for me and doing it on my birthday and sharing the experience with my dad made it all the more special. Afternoon Tea at the Ritz is truly an iconic and indulgent experience steeped in tradition and luxury. You will be transported to a bygone era of glamour and sophistication from the moment you arrive. Afternoon tea at the Ritz is served in the stunning Palm Court. An opulent room with ornate towering pillars, sparkling chandeliers, 24-carat gold details and a pianist playing classical music in the background.

The Ritz Club Former Ballroom

Although my birthday is in January, we were lucky enough to be able to still take part in the Ritz Christmas Afternoon Tea menu. In 2022, for the first time in Ritz history, afternoon tea was served in the spectacular former Ballroom in The Ritz Club. If you’re lucky enough to book these limited-time tea reservations, you’re in for a real treat! Instead of a pianist, we were treated to a three-piece band that dazzled us throughout the two-hour experience.

The Ritz Afternoon Tea Menu

The menu includes 18 different types of tea, including the famous Ritz Royal Blend, specially created for the hotel. The tea is served in silver pots, accompanied by delicate finger sandwiches with classic fillings such as smoked salmon, cucumber, and egg mayonnaise. My favourite was the egg sandwich since it was served on the fluffiest potato bun.

The scones are freshly baked and served warm with clotted cream and strawberry jam. The pièce de résistance is the exquisite selection of pastries and cakes. When the desserts first came out, I was surprised that there were only three miniature tartlets. Most of the other afternoon teas had at least four different sweets. But I didn’t expect that you ALSO get a fresh slice of cake in addition to the desserts served on the tiered tray. At the end of the meal, they push this beautiful antique cake cart around to each table. When we visited, we had the choice of chocolate hazelnut banana cake or lemon cream cake. Or you could take a slice of both! Despite being so full I thought I would burst, I chose a piece of the chocolate banana cake. And it was by far the best thing I ate all night!

Dress Code

A word of warning before heading to the Ritz. There is a strict dress code for all visitors to the tea parlour. The Ritz wants their visitors to make an event of going out for tea. And getting all dressed up is part of making that special. Men are required to wear a jacket and tie. Jeans and sportswear are not permitted for either ladies or gentlemen.

So, whether you’re a local looking for a new spot to relax or a visitor in search of a unique experience, I’ve rounded up some of the most bewitching coffee shops in London. These places are sure to captivate your senses and provide the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Host Cafe

I stumbled upon Host Cafe by complete accident. I was searching for architectural wonders in the area and knew St. Mary Aldermary was home to the most amazing Gothic interiors. But when I stepped inside, I was shocked to find that while the church’s interior had remained the same, a tiny coffee shop was set up at the back. Visitors could enjoy a fancy latte while admiring the beautiful historic architecture inside. They had even set up a series of larger tables behind the nave where people were clacking away on their laptops, and small groups were having hushed meetings. It was official, I thought. I had found my new remote-work home away from home!

I got my coffee and sat in the pews facing the altar. Laughter and excited chatter filled the echoing interior. Church interiors usually tend to be exceptionally silent. Almost eerily so. And it was amazing to find this one filled with such life! Host Cafe is a fantastic example of how modern businesses can blend seamlessly with historic architecture.

The original church was built in the 17th century by Sir Christopher Wren, the master builder of St. Paul’s Cathedral. The original church features have been preserved through this readaptation of the space. To ensure they last another lifetime. The soaring vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and wooden pews make even a simple drip coffee break feel like a special event. This was absolutely my favourite spot in the city to come and work or just relax while watching the light stream in through those beautiful stained glass windows. A magical place to be. And the perfect escape on a rainy day.

Regency Cafe

If you’re looking to step back in time, there is perhaps no better place to visit than the Regency Cafe. This retro diner has been serving classic British breakfasts since 1946. And has become a beloved institution in London’s Westminster neighbourhood. The interior of the Regency Cafe is practically unchanged from the 40s. Bright red linoleum floors, Formica tables, red and white gingham curtains and, of course, photographs of Tottenham Hotspur football players decorate the nostalgic interior.

It’s a place packed with character and charm and always filled with locals and visitors alike. The owner is almost always behind the counter and I was so delighted by how he always remembered everyone’s name after their order. Making it feel like you’ve been there 100 times before, even on your first visit.

To my surprise, the coffee here is much more than diner brew. If you ask for milk with your coffee, they serve it using this amazing retro milk frothing machine. Turning a simple drip coffee into a fancy latte! They even top it with chocolate powder! But what sets the Regency Cafe apart is the food quality – the portions are more than generous, the ingredients are fresh, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. It’s the perfect spot for a hearty breakfast before exploring the city or for a comforting meal after a long day of sightseeing. But don’t worry if you just want to sit and enjoy the loud and bustling atmosphere.

FlatCap Coffee co.

Hidden behind the otherwise stony Victoria Street is a TRUE hidden gem of the London coffee scene; FlatCap Coffee co. FlatCap opened this tiny coffee stall in partnership with Jens Jakobsen. Jakobsen is an inventive florist and floral designer who has created a charming little garden oasis along this hidden pathway.

Jens Jakobsen transformed this previously austere concrete space into an enchanted micro-gardens. He called it “the Onion Garden.” The onion garden was inspired by the Egyptian’s worship of onions. They believed that the onion symbolized eternity as the anatomy of the onions was a circle-within-a-circle. Onions decorate the entire space along with other beautiful flowers and plant life. Everything sold in the flower shop goes to the upkeep of the garden. Visitors can sit inside the micro-garden, enjoying a coffee amongst the flowers and plants all year. They even had blankets to keep you warm in the winter. Jens wanted to help Londoners connect back to nature. And finding this spot was a lifesaver for me whenever I just wanted to zen out after a long day of exploring.

The V&A Cafe

One of the most gorgeous cafe interiors in the entire city can be found inside the Victoria and Albert museum. And getting into the museum (and cafe) is completely free. In fact, it was providing free access to these kinds of architectural works of art that inspired the founding of the V&A. And the V&A museum café was the world’s first of its kind! In 1860, architect Henry Cole wanted to create awe-inspiring spaces to draw the general public out of the Gin Palaces and into a museum where they could study applied art and sciences. After their tour, visitors could get tea and a bun or a hot meal in one of the three elaborately designed refreshment rooms. And today, you can still do the exact same.

Three Refreshment Rooms

Cole created the three styles of “refreshment rooms.” The Gamble room is my favourite, featuring these huge columns covered in fantastical ceramic tiles. The tile also covered the entire room, framing the vibrant stained glass windows arching along the back wall. Newspapers of the time called the room “…richly and gaily-adorned like the cafés of Paris.” 

The Poynter Room is inspired by Dutch ceramic art and features blue and white painted tiles. Framed inside rich wooden panels. Female students at the National Art Training School were commissioned to paint these, and it is one of the first female artist commissions ever created in England.

The final room is the Morris Room, named after the famous designer William Morris. Dark green wallpaper covered in olive leaves wraps around the walls, accented by a golden frieze of hounds chasing hares. You can stay in any of these rooms for hours. There is so much turnaround in here; no one notices if you have been there all day. The adjacent museum cafe has a lovely little coffee station where you can get any kind of fancy coffee you desire! While it is loud here, you can’t beat that view!

The Pickwick Cafe

On the southern edge of Camden, behind the bright red door at #48 Doughty Street, you’ll find the old family home of famed British writer Charles Dickens. The house is now a museum dedicated to the life of Charles Dickens. It also is a preserved example of Georgian townhomes and their furnishings from the 19th century. But hidden within the museum’s front door, at the back of the home, is a tiny little eatery called the Pickwick Cafe. While guests to the museum are free to visit the cafe at any time, museum admission is not required to enjoy a cup of coffee inside this amazing historic building.

The coffee shop features both an indoor and outdoor eating area. During the wintertime, cozy indoor tables are the perfect spot to enjoy a warm pot of tea. But when the weather is good, the outdoor courtyard is a tranquil oasis. You can just imagine Dickens himself sitting outside, dreaming up the next adventures of Oliver Twist! The Pickwick Cafe also offers delicious and indulgent cakes, warm scones with jam and light lunch options using locally sourced ingredients. I loved coming here to write and was never the only one

Attendant Coffee Roasters

Located in the heart of Fitzrovia, the Attendant is a unique and quirky coffee shop unlike any other! To find your way inside, look out for the gorgeous wrought-iron shell that leads underground. You might be shocked to find yourself standing inside an old Victorian public restroom. But don’t let that put you off! The space has been beautifully transformed into a cozy and inviting cafe that will make you want to stay for hours.

One of the first things you’ll notice when you step inside are the original Victorian ceramic urinals decorated with art nouveau-inspired floral motifs. Instead of removing them, they transformed them into a chick bar counter for visitors. Repurposing old into new is the ethos of this cafe. The walls are adorned with vintage green tiles and quirky artwork, and the warm lighting makes the entire space feel so inviting. Making it the perfect spot to catch up with friends or get some work done. The cafe is small, so if you don’t want to wait in line to get inside, try to come during off hours.

Farm Girl Notting Hill

Farm Girl is a charming and cozy coffee shop located in the trendy neighbourhood of Notting Hill in London. The cafe is situated on Portobello Road, one of the most famous streets in the area known for its vibrant market and eclectic and antique boutiques. The exterior of the cafe is adorned with leafy green plants, with the wisteria blooming bright purple in the Springtime. The interior is just as green featuring floor-to-ceiling handmade tiles framed by a whimsical mural wrapping around the ceiling. There is also a small outdoor seating area for those wanting to soak up the sunshine while sipping their coffee.

The cafe is well known for its signature “super lattes,” including rose matcha, liquid gold (with turmeric and ginger root) and their black latte (with activated charcoal!) Momo’s Garden Cafe

If you want to feel like you’re sitting outside your cozy English cottage, head to Gordon Square Park in Bloomsbury. Here in the southeast corner of the park will you find this flower-covered cottage known as Momo’s Garden Cafe. This miniature cottage is home to a tiny kiosk serving homemade treats and comforting coffee and tea. Outside the cottage are a series of small tables where you can sit under the trees. Soaking up the sun while watching locals out on the run or walking their dogs. The friendly service here is one of the main reasons I keep coming back! They cater to lots of different diets, including vegan and gluten-free and all their cakes are made fresh!

Boxcar Baker & Deli

Boxcar Baker & Deli is a charming coffee shop located in Marylebone. Upon entering, customers are greeted by a plethora of plant life emerging from every corner of the cafe. Leafy ivy is hung around the coffee bar like streamers and tendrils of plants hung from the ceiling reach down towards customers below. It’s more like relaxing inside a greenhouse than a coffee shop. The décor is natural and cozy, with wooden accents surrounding the walls. Bringing more of the outdoors in.

Café in the Crypt

Café in the Crypt is one of those spots in London that is quite literally under your feet, in one of the busiest parts of town, but you might never know it’s there! This alluring coffee cafe is just a stone’s throw from Trafalgar Square in the historic St. Martin-in-the-Fields church crypt. Yes, that’s right, you can dine and drink inside an 18th-century crypt. The entrance to the cafe is located just off Charing Cross Road, to the left of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. You’ll see a tall glass column with a winding staircase leading you down into the Crypt. There is also a small accessibility lift to help anyone in the basement which requires it.

As soon as you enter the cafe, you’ll be struck by the dramatic low lighting and spotlights that cast a warm glow to highlight the beautiful old brick vaults. Under your feet, you might be shocked that the old church tombstones are still there, curious memories of the past for you to marvel at. The menu at Café in the Crypt is diverse and offers a range of coffee drinks, teas, and light bites. You can even come here for a luxury afternoon tea at only £18 per person.

One of the special features of the Café in the Crypt is its live music program, called “Crypt Lates,” which features a range of talented musicians performing jazz, classical, and other genres. The acoustics in the Crypt are excellent, and the music adds to the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. Check their website for upcoming performances.

History of Borough Market

Borough Market is one of London’s oldest food markets in the heart of Southwark, with a rich history dating back over 1,000 years. The original entrance to the city of London was located just a stone’s throw away from the market, on the London bridge.

But London Bridge in the 12 century was a much different scene than today. These days, London Bridge is one of the most austere pieces of architecture along the Thames. Providing visitors and locals with a straight shot across the river and nothing more. But back in Medieval London, the bridge was a veritable cacophony of life. The entire bridge was lined with shops and houses, one piled on top of the other, creating a vibrant and bustling commercial center.

Medieval Borough Market

This brought in loads of traders, but these merchants required a space much larger than the already overwhelmed bridge. This is where the first Borough Market was conceived. The market, located just opposite the entrance to the city, initially dealt with trading grain and large livestock. But as the years passed and the market expanded. It became a commercial district selling produce, leather, pottery, soap and more.

If you think Borough Market is crowded today, imagine the chaos you would have found here in the 16th century. The market was packed to the brim with fishmongers and butchers. The most foul-smelling sellers were located as close as possible to the bridge and river as possible. This meant they could have access to drainage to keep those odours out of the street. The less foul-smelling your business, the more inward your stalls were from the river. Almost like medieval grocery stall aisles.

The New Borough Market

But the market was growing out of control. Borough Market was smack dab in the center of London’s main entryway, acting as a blocked artery into the city. It caused such traffic congestion that, in 1754, the market was forced to close by an Act of Parliament. Luckily, in 1756 local parishioners were able to set up another market on a new site that would become the Borough Market we know today.

The iconic art deco green wrought iron building was the design of architect Henry Rose and was built in 1932. For years the covered market mainly sold local produce and was only frequented by the Southwark residents. But in the 1990s, the artisanal restaurant boom was beginning to take shape in London. Various pioneering food businesses saw the potential of revitalizing the British food scene and felt that Borough Market was the place to do so! They hoped on the trend of food markets serving up small bites from local restaurants. Combined with more traditional market stalls selling preserves, produce, fresh meats, and pastries.

Ethically Sourced

Most people probably don’t know that Borough Market is run by a charitable trust. This group overseas has a strict food policy within the market itself. This policy was implemented in the 1990s to ensure the traders’ ongoing commitment to quality, sustainability and ethics. This includes environmental sustainability and animal welfare. These policies can make you feel better about the food you’re buying. Not just any stall can sell food here. Only the best of the best of London gets to call themselves a vendor at Borough Market!

Hours of Operation

Unlike other markets in London, this market is open seven days a week. Monday to Friday, it’s open 10 am – 5 pm, Saturdays from 8 am – 5 pm, and Sundays 10 am – 3 pm. Although the main market is open all week, various stalls are only open from Wednesday onwards. I’ve done my best to outline the opening times of each stall below. Remember not to leave your Market visit too late in the evening as many shops will sell out.

Location & Access

The best way to get to Borough market is via the London Underground. They are conveniently located right beside the London Bridge Underground station, which is serviced by the Jubilee and Northern Lines. After exiting the train, follow signs for Borough Market, and you’ll find yourself there in under a few minutes.

Advice on Crowds and Lines

A word of warning on the crowds. Many of the most popular food stalls here can get really busy. There are times when the lines for food can get up to an hour long! Especially on the weekends, the entire market can get super crowded. To avoid the lines, try to visit Borough Markets on a weekday. Wednesday and Thursdays are best to find the most shops open but not as busy as the weekends.

Unless there is a food stall you have been dreaming of and absolutely CANNOT MISS, if the queue is too long, give it a miss. Or come back later to see if the line is any shorter. Your vacation time is precious. And often, no matter how good the food really is, the taste can be soured by having to wait in a frustratingly long line. There are so many options in these markets, so don’t be afraid to skip that one “must-try” stop and give something different a go. I’ve included a number of different stops, more than any one stomach could fill, to ensure there is always multiple options for your day out in Borough Market.

Covent Garden Portico

We will start our tour in front of the beautiful wrought iron portico on Stoney Street, just north of Park Street. The gorgeous portico was only added to the facade in the 2000s. But this historical piece of architecture was built in 1850. The portico once dominated the entrance to the floral hall in Covent Garden. In the 1980s, when Covent Garden was being renovated, this portico was removed and stored by the historic society. Not wanting to simply ditch this amazing piece of London’s history. During Borough Market’s revitalization project, they saw the opportunity to repurpose the old portico on the west side of the market. Borough Market bought it from the Covent Garden trust for a whopping sum of £1.

Monmouth Coffee Company

The perfect way to start the morning off right is with a cup of coffee or tea from Monmouth Coffee Company! Monmouth Coffee Company is now one of London’s most popular indie coffee chains, but it first originated here in the late 1990s. Its charming interior blends modern fixtures with old red brickwork from the original building. Giving it such an old London feel mixed with classic comforts. They are serious about their beans and even have them on display behind glass. You can take a look before ordering to read about the beans before brewing.

Ginger Pig

Next, let’s head across the street and hit up Ginger Pig. All the meat for sale at Ginger pig is from native British rare breed livestock. Their fresh beef is butchered on-site, so many locals come here for prime cuts of beef for their Sunday roast. But we have come here for those glossy sausage rolls, steaming up the display case. These are one of the most filling sausage rolls in the city! Even just lifting this baby up to your mouth is a workout! Plan on splitting it up if you eat your way through the market.

Although wrapping meat inside pastry is a Roman recipe, the history of sausage rolls in the UK can be traced back to the early 1800s. Sausage rolls were believed to be a portable and convenient snack for working-class labourers. It was a way to get a quick and filling meal while working. The first recorded mention of sausage rolls was in a British cookbook written in 1851. Ever since these handy meat pockets have been considered a quintessential British food. And they should be on the top of everyone’s list to try when visiting London. While the classic pork sausage roll is the most popular, you can also get the pastry filled with British Silton cheese. Or opt for a spicy lamb roll for something a little more daring!

Richard Haward’s Oysters

Just inside the entrance to the covered part of Borough Market, stop in at Richard Haward’s Oysters stand. The Haward family has been harvesting oysters in the shallow creeks outside Essex since as far back as 1792! This family knows their oysters! I was shocked to find out oysters could be found in England at all. But apparently, the warm temperatures in that area provide the perfect conditions for these delicious, fatty oysters to thrive. And since they are caught locally, the prices as surprisingly affordable. If you’ve never tried an oyster before, this is the spot to give it a go. I often suggest asking for their recommendation on what to try. Or taste a few different oysters to learn more about the subtle flavour difference that each variety of oysters has.

Borough Olives

Borough Olives are one of my favourite spots to grab a salty snack. Something about those old wooden barrels filled with glossy marinating olives excites me and gets my mouth watering! All ingredients from Borough Olives are sourced from specialist producers in Greece, Spain and Morocco. Once harvested, the olives are brought to their Essex kitchens, dosed with various spices and marinades that turn them up to 11 on the flavour scale! A small sampling of olives is a great way to brighten your taste buds. If you are planning a little picnic, but sure to try their olive tapenade. The perfect thing to spread over a fresh loaf of bread and served with a side of cheese.

Kappacasein Dairy

Dash across the street quickly before delving deeper into the covered market to grab a snack at Kappacasein Dairy. Kappacasein Dairy was founded by William Oglethorpe, who studied agriculture in Switzerland before moving to London in the 1980s. This shop specializes in alpine-style cheese served up on British classics. Their best seller is the toasted cheese sandwich made with shredded raclette. These are often called “cheese toasties” and are considered another British staple food.

In the winter, a favourite salty snack is their melted raclette, which is scraped and smothered over a plate of freshly baked potatoes. And served with a side of crunchy pickles. This comforting snack is the perfect way to warm you up on a cold or rainy day in London.

Turnips

Heading deeper into the market, make your way to Turnips Greengrocers. This shop is run by the Foster family, who source fruit and veg from all about Britain to bring the finest seasonal produce to the centre of London! While their produce is surely the visual draw of this stand, they have become very popular for their pressed fruit juices. These refreshing beverages allow you to taste the freshness of their produce without having to lug a bag full of fruit home with you.

The stand is also well known for its incredible selection of mushrooms. But visitors who didn’t have a kitchen in London mostly had to miss out on trying these precious morels. But recently, they have started selling freshly made mushroom risotto using their gorgeous produce. Cooked right in the market, for all to see and small. You can honestly sniff them out from across the market, making Turnips easy to find. If you want to amp up your risotto, you can also add freshly shaved truffles or truffle oil on top. I’m not much of a fan, so I prefer the plain risotto as it allows the true flavours of the natural mushrooms to come through. But I know truffle fans will jump at the opportunity!

Heritage Cheese

If you want to sample some of the best British Cheese, head straight to the Heritage Cheese stall. This company brings together the best British and Irish artisanal cheese makers. My favourite being their selection of Blue cheeses, including the famous Stilton. I don’t think you’ve truly tried blue cheese until you’ve tried Stilton. Their stalls will happily give you a sample before slicing you off a wedge of cheese to take home. So don’t be scared to ask. If you aren’t sure what to get, ask for the Cheesemongers Choice. Give them a budget, and they will provide you with a few varieties with that price point in mind.

The Black Pig

The one spot in the market that I feel is worth the wait in line for the sandwiches at the Black Pig. Their signature honey truffle and parmesan pork ciabatta are truly one of the best things to eat in the entire city! The pork for the sandwich is slow-roasted over hot coals all day, giving it a succulent and subtle flavour that just melts in your mouth. That combination of sweet, salty and fatty is beyond reproach. My absolute #1 recommendation! There is an area of raised seating just opposite the Black Pig if you’re looking for somewhere to sit and enjoy your food. Or just take a minute to relax before heading back into the market.

Comptoir Gourmand

I know so many people are obsessed with the doughnuts at Bread Ahead but we found them to be stale and the queue is always really really long! Instead, consider checking out Comptoir Gourmand for a dose of delicious baked goods! This amazing shop is run by chef-patissier Sebastien Wind, who was trained in France. And we all know the French have mastered the art of pastry. Everything from tender fruit tarts to huge, colourful meringues and custardy croissants can be found here in their little stall.

Humble Crumble

Humble Crumble is one of those places I saw go viral online, and I thought it would just be one of those over-hyped food trends. But once I tasted it, I was shocked to find it was everything people say it is. A humble crumble is essentially a build-your-own sweet crumble bowl. You start with a base of their seasonal fruit selections. Depending on the time of year, you can get mixed berries, apples, rhubarb, strawberries or a mixture of two.

You then cover the fruit in your choice of crumble. Either classic shortbread, vegan shortbread or granola. Then the entire bowl is then smothered in the creamiest hot vanilla custard, frozen vanilla custard, or freshly whipped cream. You can also get one extra topping like dried rose petals, almond slivers, or marshmallows. For an extra 50 p, you can also get a creme brulee topping. I’m a sucker for a ‘make-your-own” sweet and this always hits the spot!

My favourite places to shop when travelling are stores that have a history. A rich tapestry of time that makes everything they sell so important! Most of these businesses have been open for multiple generations and represent the best of that country. Things which people have come to love for years and years, so you know it’s the good stuff! It is like taking a piece of history home with you! So come with us now to discover my favourite Historic Shops and the souvenirs to buy which are so much more interesting for your friends and family than any beard oil or robe will ever be! Many of these shops have online stores so even if you’re not travelling there directly, you can still buy something really special for Christmas.

Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy | Florence, Italy

Stepping into the Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy is about as close to going back in time as you’ll get. The old shop in Florence prides itself on being the world’s oldest pharmacy, which opened in 1221! Back then, there was a small Dominican Order who lived in the connecting Church of Santa Maria Novella. Like many orders of monks, they had their own herb gardens where they grew a variety of medicinal plants. Using these plans, the monks created herbal concoctions and started selling them to the public. Their treatments actually worked for minor, everyday nuisances like stomach pains and headaches. Even today, many people still use herbal treatments to help with their body ailments. But also created from these herbs and fresh flowers were sensational (literally) perfumes.

The Perfumerie

In 1612 an official retail operation was opened where they began selling items aside from medicine. Everything from perfume to potpourri and other toiletries could be created from their ancient garden. Today, you can still purchase the very same perfumes as medieval Florentines wore back in 1621! The Acqua della Regina scent uses the same recipe the Dominican monks made in 1533 for Caterina de Medici. Caterina de Medici commissioned the perfume when she married Enrico di Valois and moved to France. The fresh citrus bouquet helped remind her of home when she was far away. And as we all know, smell is perhaps the best wall to recall a memory.

Angeli di Firenze is a more recent fragrance inspired by the Florentine people. The “Angels of Florence” were a group of young people who came to the aid of the entire city after a devastating flood in 1966. The banks of the Arno river broke, flooding the city. But the flooding was not just water, but thick destructive mud. Some areas were entrenched up to 22 feet deep. Museums, churches and other historic sites were on the brink of losing precious relics, but these young people worked 24 hours a day to ensure they saved all that needed to be rescued. The fragrance was created on the 40th anniversary of the flood and contains a bouquet of sweet, fruity notes. A polar opposite to those muddy smells the workers must have experienced. I wear this perfume anytime I want to feel like a hero!

Livraria Bertrand | Lisbon, Portugal

Inside the blue Azulejo tiled building in the centre of Lisbon, hides the oldest bookstore in the world! Opened in 1732, in the shopping district of Chiado, Livraria Bertrand welcomed people into their store to browse their incredible selection of books. Sadly, their original store was destroyed in 1755 during a devastating earthquake. They had to move out temporarily but were able to move back into their original location in 1773. It only took them 20 years to restore the store back to its former glory!

For over a hundred years, this place has been a favourite hangout of Portuguese writers. Walking inside, you feel like you’re entering an ancient cave. Look up to admire the ancient brick vaults and arched ceilings. Although most of the books they carry here are in Portuguese, they also have a small English section with popular titles. If you buy a book at the store, they will give you a sticker to place inside the book to show that you purchased it at the oldest bookstore in the world.

Even if you don’t want to buy a book, there is a cute little cafe at the back of the shop where you can sit inside and enjoy looking at all the pretty titles stacked on tall wooden shelves. Bookstores and libraries are some of the most peaceful places in the world and are the best place to come for a bit of downtime amid busy travel days.

Pfunds Molkerei | Dresden, Germany

I’ve been singing the praises of Dresden ever since my first visit! It was such a surprising town and the discovery of this place was just one of the many joyful stops we made along the way. Pfunds Molkieri, covered floor to ceiling in the most incredible tiles and Meissen porcelain, is the oldest dairy shop in East Germany. It was built back in 1879 and was the first place where Germans could buy high-quality, concentrated milk. Although the dairy was mostly destroyed in WWII, the family made sure to rebuild in the exact same fashion as the original. Now, visitors can come to see and taste the extraordinary delicacies inside Pfunds Molkieri. 

Guests can try different kinds of milk and cheeses from farms across Germany. Bringing home cheese as a gift for a loved one might prove pretty difficult. Not only does it requires refrigeration but most international countries will not allow you to bring in dairy products through customs. Luckily, Pfunds Molkieri also carries a wonderful selection of milk soaps made from that same famous herd of German cows. Milk soaps are gentle on the skin, a natural exfoliant, help prevent acne and are rich in nutrients! A wonderful stocking stuffer for your Christmas morning.

Maiasmokk | Tallinn, Estonia

Located in the historic quarter of Tallinn, Maiasmokk (which means ‘Sweet tooth‘) is the oldest café in Estonia. The regal cafe has been in operation since 1864. Inside, the interior feels so sumptuous. Like having a coffee in Versaille! The intricate ornate mirrored ceiling reflects the gorgeous old tiled floors, and rich wooden furnishings. The cafe is a true slice of history as it has remained unchanged for almost a century.

While Maiasmokk serves all the coffees and teas you’d expect, its most popular item is marzipan. The cafe even features a museum dedicated to the history of marzipan. In the 19th century, this was where the Russian Imperial family came to get their marzipan. The almond-based sugary treat lasts forever, making it a great gift to bring home!

Tsuen Tea | Uji, Japan

When you think of Japan, one of the first things that you might think of is a cup of green tea. And in Uji, Japan (just outside Kyoto), you can visit the world’s oldest tea shop, Tsuen Tea. Tsuen Tea opened here in 1160, although the building which you can visit today is a later construction from 1672.

The Tsuen family were descendants of a great samurai who was the guardian of the ancient Uji Bridge. The family lived adjacent to the bridge and opened a small tea shop next door where they would greet travellers. And serve them tea. Inside the Edo period shop, you can still see ceramic tea jars that are several hundred years old sitting along the shelves. Be sure to pay your respects to the old Tsuen samurai, whose wooden statues still stands proudly inside on display.

Legatoria Piazzesi | Venice, Italy

Tucked away in on the Campiello Feltrina San Marco is Venice‘s oldest paper shop; Legatoria Piazzesi. This old stationary shop has been making paper-based wonders since 1851. It is still in operation today and offers onsite book-binding services as well as hand-printed sheets of ornamented paper. The ornate handmade papers are so beautiful they could simply be placed in a frame as they look like a work of art. But even better, they can be used by intrepid journalists and scrapbookers.

The owners are pretty strict, and this is a place where you should only enter if you intend to buy something. For those who just prefer to browse, stick to peeking in the windows. They always have lovely displays of their bookbinding, and you can usually poke your head inside the door to at least check out the stock of papers overflowing from all the shelves. This isn’t done out of malice. Handmade paper is super delicate, and now that the shop is somewhat of a tourist destination, they don’t want any overcrowding. The store is tiny and their products can easily be damaged.

Il Marmoraro | Rome, Italy

All along Via Margutta you might spot unique stone signs to mark the various restaurants and shops along the street. These are all created inside Il Marmoraro. The owners have been here making custom-made signs for over 60 years! But the tradition of these stone signs dates back hundreds of years. In ancient Rome, legislative acts were written on bronze tablets and then displayed on Capitol Hill. These old tablets had a very distinct ancient roman style script. This became the defacto “font” used in Rome. It went to be inscribed on stone columns, gravestones and even street sights. And today, Il Marmoraro keeps up the tradition, still making signs using that ancient hand-carved typography.

The owner doesn’t speak much English but happily greets everyone who comes into the shop with a smile. For only €15, he will make you a custom sign in the same style as the ancient ones. You can have pretty much anything written upon as long as it’s not too many characters. If you arrive early, your personalized stone tablet will be ready for you before the end of day!

Caza das Vellas Loreto | Lisbon, Portugal

Happening upon the Caza das Vellas Loreto while in Lisbon was one of the highlights of my trip. My eyes were drawn to the curiously shaped vibrant candles in the window and I poked my head inside. The tiny shop feels like stepping into an old wardrobe. The entire place is only three meters wide! But stuffed within the glass cabinets lining the walls are colourful stacks of wax candles. Above the cashier at the back of the shop is a large golden set of numbers with the date 1789 written upon it. That is the date when the shop first opened. And they’ve been doing things almost the very same way ever since.

In addition to the multitude of tapered candles, they also have seasonal designs to delight their customers. Their Christmas collection is a personal favourite and a wonderful way to add some unique flair to your dining table. And since the candles only cost a few euros, apiece it’s a great gift to buy for your friends and family.

À la Mère de Famille | Paris, France

The world’s oldest chocolate shop stands on the cusp of the famous Montmartre neighbourhood in Paris. A la Mère de Famille opened in 1761 by Pierre-Jean Bernard. The gold lettering outside the shop shines in the sunlight and beckons visitors from down the road. The stunning typography, against that beautiful bright green paint, has stood the test of time and still looks like a gem in the centre of the neighbourhood.

Today there are 12 other branches of the chocolate store across the city, but this is the only one you should seek! It is by far the most beautiful, with its antique shelves still stacked with vintage jars and lovely old brass fittings that have barely changed in 260 years. One of the best times to visit the shop is during the holidays when the chocolatiers develop unique sweet creations to delight and devour.

The Oldest Sweet Shop | Pateley Bridge, England

There are some places whose name says it all, and the Original Old Sweet Shop in Pateley Bridge, England, is one of those places. They are the official World Guinness record holder for the oldest continuously trading sweet shop, opened in 1827. Glass jars line the shelves, containing brightly coloured sweets with antique labels.

In addition to holding this record, they lean into the concept of selling retro sweets that bring a wave of nostalgia for many older visitors or for the younger generations are a chance to sample a piece of history. Many of these sweets use the original recipes and are even created using old copper pans.

Dulceria de Celaya | Mexico City, Mexico

Dulcería de Celaya is a tiny, old shop selling traditional Mexican candies and sweets. It opened in Mexico City in 1874. Walking into the shop, nothing has changed in over 100 years. When the family-run shop opened, the candy was made in a small, improvised factory using wooden shovels, copper saucepans and a minature oven. They could only produce so much daily, often only one candy tray. But the sweets were so popular that they would sell out daily. As the demand rose, they expanded their production to meet the city’s needs.

Even today, they produce candy in the same way it was made in the beginning, out of that tiny kitchen. The smell of fresh pineapples, strawberries, guavas, and coconut fills the air when you walk in the doors. It’s intoxicating. The candy is very well-priced, so even if you don’t recognize anything, just let the smells guide you and try whatever your eye is drawn to.

A Little History on Victorian England

Queen Victoria was crowned in 1837, and she remained on the throne for a staggering 64 years until her death in 1901. She married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg (German dynasty) in 1840. Together they had nine children and were very happily married. Her keen interest in family soaked into the fabric of British society and influenced generations to come. When Albert died suddenly in 1861, Victoria went into a period of mourning, which would last until her eventual death. She wore black for the rest of her life after the death of her husband and even had the servants lay out his clothes daily.

Under Victoria’s reign, Britain saw a time of significant cultural expansion. There were so many historic advances in industries, science and communications. Under her watchful eye, there was also the expansion of railways and the building of the London Underground. These elements would combine to create a melting pot which produced the magical Christmas traditions we cherish today.

The Christmas Tree

Queen Victoria married her beloved Prince Albert in 1840. As he was of German descent, he brought many of his hometown traditions with him to Windsor palace. One of these was the Christmas Tree. Christmas trees had been established in Germany since the 16th-century. In Germany though, they were generally placed on the tabletop instead of on the floor. These trees were relatively unassuming, with nothing more than candles placed on the tree as decoration.

In 1848 the Illustrated London News published a picture in their newspaper of Queen Victoria and her family around their beloved Christmas tree. But their English Christmas tree was adorned in beautiful ornaments. From there, the populace became enchanted with the idea of decorating their own Christmas tree. Since it was quick to mass-produce these decorations due to so many now industrial plants opening up, the market for the ornaments exploded. Round glass baubles in bright and reflective materials that would reflect then candlelight became the most popular commodity at the end of the 19th century.

Pile on the Ornaments

As mentioned before, Victorians loved their ornaments. In the late 19th century, the traditional colours for ornaments were the patriotic red, white and blue to represent the British flag. Small drums, airships and trains were also a popular kind of decoration. These were meant to express your national pride and love for the British military. With the invention of the printing press, die-cut images of Santas, angels, and other Christmas iconography were popular things to hang on the tree.

Lametta or tinsel was the final flourish any Victorian would add to their tree. The origins of hanging tinsel on the tree date back to 1610 in Nuremberg, Germany. Back then, people would use real strands of silver to hang on their tree which was meant as a means to show off their immense wealth. But as silver tarnished so quickly, it was swapped for the more durable copper or tin strands. This also meant it was much cheaper to buy and, therefore, accessible to the general public, who ate up the tinsel’s trendy look.

DIY Ornaments

Other Christmas ornaments were made by the lady of the house. Since the printing press made publications easy to mass-produce, women’s magazines begun popping up everywhere. Inside of them were instructions on how the dutiful housewife could create her own ornaments. Making these homemade ornaments was seen as a way to show off your skills as a housewife, even if you could afford store-bought ones. One popular design was made from coloured paper and shaped into horns. Then the horns were filled with sweets or dates that the children could eat during the holidays. Another design used silk ribbons to make pompoms and tassels or you could create a snowman out of cotton wool!

Enjoy time with Family

It wasn’t until the Victorian era that Christmas became an official “holiday,” and working-class people got time off work. In the Victorian era, in England and Wales, December 25th and 26th were made into official holidays. This would allow the new middle-class workers who had moved to the city for their jobs time to go back home to visit their families. Even those who grew up far away could get back home quickly with the advent of the newly built train lines. Queen Victoria and her husband Albert thought family life was essential to overall well-being. And they wanted their citizens to be able to return home to be with family at Christmas.

Gift Giving

Queen Victoria’s reign was during the time of the first Industrial Revolution. Factories and mass production meant that many products previously only made by hand which cost a fortune were suddenly available to the middle class at a significantly lower price. This was especially significant when it came to Christmas gifts. Before toys were reserved for the rich but now almost all children’s parents might be able to afford to buy them something special to play with.

If you couldn’t afford toys, your stocking was filled with nuts, apples and clementines. Putting clementines into socks goes back to a group of nuns in the 12th century. This group of French nuns was inspired by the legend of St Nicholas and would leave apples and tangerines inside socks of the houses of the poor. At this time these fruits were very rare and expensive and eating them would have been a once-a-year kind of treat!

We know all about the kinds of gifts which Victorian men, women and children would have on this Christmas list thanks to Victorian Women’s magazines. Just like today, they were filled with gift guides. Popular gifts for women were; fans, perfume, Christmas decorations, sewing baskets, sewing scissors and even a magazine subscription.

Gifts for men included smoking caps, braces, shaving soaps, slippers, tobacco pouches, umbrellas or cigar cases. Gift for children consisted of hair ribbons, wax dolls, mittens, a toboggan, stamp albums, wooden toys, marbles, building bricks and toy soldiers.

Embrace Handmade Gifts

Just as the newly printed Women’s magazines influenced handmade ornaments, they also influenced the tradition of making handmade gifts. This was not just to show off your craft skills but as a means of displaying your wealth through your ability to have enough free time to make a gift, rather than buy them. Things like knitted mitted, handkerchiefs, button-boxes and aprons were popular gifts for the Victorian lady.

Send some Christmas Cards

More revolutions in the industrial era meant that mail was now able to travel further distances and at low costs. The “Penny Post” was introduced in the UK in 1840. Letters could be sent anywhere in the country for only a penny (about 10 cents nowadays). In 1843 a famous printer, Sir Henry Cole, got the idea to produce lovely illustrated cards in his shop during the Christmas season. People could buy them for a shilling to send home and bring a smile to their family’s face if they couldn’t return themselves. Sir Henry Cole would go on to be the first director of the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Christmas Crackers

One of my favourite things to do at Christmas dinner is open my Christmas Cracker. I loved making them from DIY materials when I was a kid and filling them with presents of my own making. Christmas Crackers were invented by a candy maker in 1846. Tom Smith, a London inventor, packaged his candies into these fancy wrappings inspired by French bonbon wrappers he had seen in Paris. He added paper hats and toys to give his sweets an edge against the competition which was explosive during the holiday season. But it wasn’t until he added the iconic explosive “bang” that his “crackers” were cemented into the hearts and minds of all.

Do some Carolling

While singing hymns during Yuletime was a 400-year practice, it was primarily done in the church. In the Victorian era, they rediscovered a love of singing at home around the piano. Since the production of these musical instruments was now being mass-produced they were now popping up all over the place in middle-class homes. The 18th century also saw the mass production of Christmas sheet music. This meant that anyone who could read the music could pick up a copy of the sheet music for only a few shillings and entertain their guests at home with a raucous sing-along.

Parlour Games

We all have our favourite board game we each drag out of the cupboard at Christmas to play with the family. But the tradition of game playing with family at Christmas dates back to the Victorian era (although in a much more dangerous way). Back then, they didn’t have Scrabble, Catan or Monopoly. Instead, they would play their favourite game, “Snapdragon.” To play, you’d fill a bowl with brandy and raisins and turn off all the lights. Then you’d set the brandy on fire, and everyone would have to grab the raisins out of the bowl, seemingly trying to avoid catching on fire or being burned in the process. Undoubtedly, this resulted in many fires, injuries, burns and probably is why we don’t play it anymore…

“Kissing Balls”

Victorians get the reputation of being quite stuffy, but they were also a massive bunch of nutters. They were perhaps just better at trying to hide it. Holidays and parties were their excuse to let their guard down and have fun! They loved the idea of mistletoe and would jump at the chance to kiss a stranger! Previously mistletoe used as decoration looked more natural and organic, just a bunch of the branches tied together. But it was the Victorians that came up with the idea to form it into a more eye-catching “kissing ball” to draw the eye and get a smooch.

Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

Whether you sit around the TV every year watching ‘A Muppet’s Christmas Carol,’ ‘Scrooged,’ or even the classic 1935 version of ‘A Christmas Carol‘, the story is one of the most popular holiday tales. A Christmas Carol was Charles Dickens‘ first published novel, released in 1843. Many of our classic ideas around “Christmas time” were created from his novelization. This includes the focal themes of family, charity, and good cheer.

Light the Advent Candles

In Victorian England, many households would place candles in their window during Advent, the four Sundays before Christmas. This was a symbol to travellers that food and shelter could be found inside. This was something all good Christians were implored to do, as a means to show charity. It also represents the theme from the Christmas story as Mary and Joseph sought shelter on their own pilgrimage. It was customary for businesses to give their customers candles as gifts around Christmas since households would go through hundreds of candles a month!

Santa Claus

The name Santa Claus comes from the Dutch word for St. Nicholas “Sinter Klass.” When the Dutch settlers moved to America in the 17th century, they brought the tradition of celebrating St. Nicholas’ saints day on December 6 by filling Stockings with gifts. In 1870 after Santa Claus’ popularity had grown in America, it made its way over to Britain. Since the popularization of Christmas by Queen Vicotria has already started to grow, the general public really latched onto the image of Santa Claus. It was then that it cemented itself in the minds of the people as the symbol of the season.

The Christmas Pickle

If you have any German ancestry, you might already know all about this odd Christmas tradition. In Germany, it was common practice to hide a pickle-shaped ornament somewhere in the tree. The first child to find the decoration on Christmas morning would receive a special gift. The tradition made its way to England in the Victorian era, no doubt from Prince Albert. Although the addition of the Christmas pickle seems to have died out in England these days, during the Victorian period, under the watchful eye of Prince Albert, it was a staple in any household.

Roast Turkey

Queen Victoria’s Christmas table was known to display the very best of England’s harvest and hunt. Although the ingredients were all harvested from the countryside around the castle, the chefs were always French. French chefs were in-vogue with the upper classes at the time, influenced by King Louis 14th luxurious court. A roast turkey with chestnut stuffing was a classic Victorian staple on the royal Christmas banquet table.

Sugar Plums

In the Victorian era, one of the most popular sweets to eat during the holidays was called “sugar plums.” The candy was made of nuts, spices and sugar, and rolled into a ball. The dark colour had the appearance of a plum, and that is where it got its name despite there being no plums in the dessert. Queen Victoria was known to hang cones on her Christmas tree and filled them with these sugar plums. Her love of the dessert popularized the sweet greatly. It was so popular even made its way into Tchaikovsky‘s famous ballet The Nutcracker, with the ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.’
