While Venice doesn’t have the sprawling Christmas fairs found in other European cities, what it does offer feels refreshingly intimate and wonderfully local. Weekend markets like the one in Burano are filled with hand-crafted ornaments, seasonal sweets, artisan gifts, and steaming cups of vin brulé, all set against the backdrop of twinkling lights and historic Venetian façades. Despar Teatro Italia is easily one of the most beautiful grocery stores in the world, and a truly unique place to do a bit of Christmas shopping in Venice. Housed inside a restored early 20th-century theatre in Cannaregio, this supermarket blends everyday convenience with breathtaking Venetian elegance. The vaulted frescoed ceiling, ornate balconies, and stained-glass windows create a stunning backdrop as you browse the aisles.

During the holidays, Despar Teatro Italia becomes even more enchanting. Its shelves are stocked with seasonal Italian favourites, from panettone and pandoro to local wines, gourmet cheeses, and artisanal chocolates, perfect for festive gifts or stocking your holiday table. Shopping here feels less like running errands and more like stepping into a piece of Venetian history dressed up for Christmas. OVS Venice

OVS is one of Italy’s most popular and accessible department store chains, known for offering affordable, stylish clothing for men, women, and children. Think of it as a blend between H&M and Uniqlo, with a distinctly Italian flair. The store focuses on modern, everyday fashion, good quality basics, and, best of all, seasonal collections that are perfect for grabbing that iconic Christmas sweater without the high price tag. Most OVS locations also sell accessories, shoes, beauty products, and home essentials, making it a convenient one-stop shop, for stocking stuffers. I picked up a few Italian perfumes, a chic scarf and glove combo and two lovely sweaters.

Venice’s Local Wine Shops

One of my favourite places to shop for Christmas food gifts in Venice is the city’s local wine shops, like A la Virtù and Livy Wine (which are my favourites). These charming boutiques are filled with handpicked bottles from small Italian vineyards, along with gourmet treats such as olive oils, balsamic vinegars, artisan pastas, and truffle-infused delicacies. The owners are often incredibly knowledgeable and happy to help you choose the perfect pairing or gift.

Flying Tiger & Pylones for Stocking Stuffers

If you’re looking for fun, affordable stocking stuffers while in Venice, Flying Tiger is an absolute delight. This playful Danish store is packed with quirky, colourful, and budget-friendly treasures that make perfect little gifts. From festive socks and novelty mugs to stationery, puzzles, and Christmas decorations, every shelf is bursting with cheerful surprises. What makes Flying Tiger so great for holiday shopping is its mix of practicality and whimsy, you’ll find things that are both useful and fun, often with a clever or humorous twist. What’s the Weather Like in Venice in Winter?

Temperatures at Christmas in Venice usually fall between 3 and 9 °C (around 37 to 48 °F). But it often feels colder than thuis thanks to the damp air rolling off the canals. Expect fog, mist, and a fair bit of rain, with the occasional acqua alta flooding in some lower areas. And once the sun sets, even a mild afternoon chill can turn cold fast.

Venetian Winter Packing Strategy

Although it might be chilly outside, Venice has plenty of cozy cafés, beautiful churches, and warm museums to duck into when the cold gets into your bones. You’ll find yourself constantly moving between cold and warm, so having layers you can easily peel off or add back on is key. And of course, anyone travelling in Italy will want to strike that balance between comfort, warmth, and a touch of that elegant Venetian style. We all want to look good in those vacation pictures, so it’s essential to feel good in whatever you’re wearing, too! Breathable layers, waterproof shoes, and cozy accessories are going to be the essential items that keep you warm so you can explore all day and night without missing a beat!

Base Layers: Your Secret Weapon

Thermal tops and leggings made of merino wool or heat-tech fabrics are ideal for staying warm without bulk. Fleece-lined tights are a lifesaver when worn under dresses or skirts. For added comfort indoors, pack a couple of lightweight camisoles or tank tops that can be layered easily or worn alone when you peel off your heavier layers. Uniqlo is one of my favourite stores for finding high-quality but affordable heat-tech items.

Mid Layers: Sweaters & Versatile Warmth

Wool or cashmere knits are perfect mid-layers, chic, cozy, and breathable. Merino turtlenecks offer a sophisticated look and can be dressed up or down depending on your plans. A slim vest adds extra warmth without making you look or feel bulky. Pair these with dark jeans or tailored trousers, which look great and work well with thermal leggings underneath. A skirt or dress, combined with fleece-lined tights, gives you a dressier option that’s still practical for colder weather.

Outerwear: Coat + Rain Protection

A wool-blend coat that falls to mid-thigh or knee-length offers elegance and warmth. Choose one with a tailored fit so it layers well over your outfits without feeling oversized. For wetter days, bring along a foldable rain shell or a coat with a built-in waterproof liner. A compact, wind-resistant umbrella is essential, choose one that won’t be a hassle in Venice’s narrow alleys.

Footwear: Built for Bridges

Waterproof boots with good tread are a must to handle slippery stones and sudden puddles. Bring a comfortable pair of sneakers or indoor shoes for days spent exploring museums or dining indoors. Wool socks and fleece or wool insoles add an extra layer of hidden warmth and help keep your feet dry and comfortable throughout the day.

Essential Accessories

A warm wool or cashmere scarf is indispensable for wrapping up against the chill. Touchscreen-friendly gloves, ideally waterproof, will keep your hands warm without sacrificing functionality. Pack a warm beanie or beret to protect your head from the wind while adding a touch of European flair. Opt for a crossbody or anti-theft bag that keeps your belongings secure while being easy to carry over bridges. To protect your electronics during high tide or rainy weather, bring along a ziplock bag or small dry pouch.

Extras Worth Bringing

The Venetian air, while damp, can be surprisingly drying on your skin. Bring lip balm, hand cream, and a small travel moisturizer. A compact, sturdy umbrella is essential, especially if your main one breaks or is lost. A microfibre towel can come in handy if you get caught in the rain or your shoes get wet. Cold weather drains batteries faster, so a portable charger is another must-have. Finally, a foldable tote is functional for shopping at local markets or carrying extra layers.

What to Skip in Venice

Avoid packing heels or delicate shoes, which are impractical for navigating cobblestones and bridges. Leave behind overly bulky coats or sweaters in favour of mixable, lighter layers. One secure, everyday bag is enough, so there’s no need to bring multiple options. Jewellery tends to get hidden under scarves and gloves, so skip the extras.

Tuileries Garden Christmas Market

The Tuileries Garden Christmas Market, known as “La Magie de Noël” (The Magic of Christmas), is one popular holiday experience in Paris. Set in the historic Tuileries Garden near the Louvre Museum, this traditional European market features over 100 wooden chalets set amongst a full holiday fair complete with carnival rides, “ice rinks,” and live entertainment. Spread through the sprawling grounds are booths selling artisanal crafts and gourmet treats.

Visitors can savour French specialties like raclette, crêpes, and, my personal favourite, mulled wine. Mulled wine, or VinChaud, is the perfect thing to keep you warm while strolling through the beautifully lit market. The enormous sparkling Ferris wheel in the center of the market offers breathtaking views of the illuminated Champs-Élysées and the rest of Paris. Although this market is probably the most commercial, it is such a lively place to visit that is full of Christmas spirit!

Place Suisse Christmas Market

One of the Christmas Markets in Paris that I just happened to stumble upon was the market inside the Place Suisse. Although a Swiss-themed Christmas village might seem strange to visit in Paris during the holiday season, the location of this market, just outside the Eiffel Tower, on the esplanade of the Paris Aquarium, makes this ephemeral village all the most magical.

The village features a collection of wooden chalets reminiscent of a traditional Swiss alpine setting. Visitors can indulge in authentic Swiss specialties such as raclette, fondue, and charcuterie while enjoying a breathtaking view of the Eiffel Tower. The ambiance is further enhanced by festive decorations and a warm, inviting atmosphere, with fire pits dotted around the market to help warm you up on a cold winter’s night.

Abbesses Montmartre Christmas Market

The Abbesses Christmas Market, located in the heart of Montmartre at Place des Abbesses, offers a charming and intimate holiday experience. This Christmas market almost feels like a neighbourhood market, with locals meeting up with their children to drink wine and gossip while their children play on the capsule and munch on roasted chestnuts. With only about a dozen stalls, you get the best Christmas culinary delights, and the vendors offer traditional French treats such as escargot, champagne, pretzels and macarons, making you feel like a part of the local community.

La Défense Christmas Village

If you’re looking for the best shopping Christmas Market in Paris, you must head to La Défense Christmas Village. With over 300 chalets, this is the largest market in Paris. This isn’t my favourite location for a Christmas market in the rather bleak, modern business district, but the festive charlet helps transform the area into a festive wonderland. Visitors can browse an impressive array of handcrafted goods, including jewelry, home decor, textiles, and holiday ornaments, many made by skilled artisans.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés Christmas Market

The Saint-Germain-des-Prés Christmas Market is a cherished holiday event in Paris’s 6th arrondissement, adjacent to the historic Saint-Germain-des-Prés Church. The market is very small, but I liked the smaller selection of vendors as it didn’t feel too overwhelming. You needed everything: hot wine, raclette sandwiches, French onion soup, chewy nougat and delectable dried fruit. This market featured more food, making it a great place to grab a snack if you’re walking around the 6th arrondissement.

Square René Viviani

My personal favourite market was the Notre Dame Christmas Market, held annually in Square René Viviani. This market, though smaller in size compared to the Tuileries Garden Christmas Market, exudes a unique charm that is quintessentially Parisian. The quaint atmosphere and the charming vendors create a holiday experience that is truly one-of-a-kind. Set against the backdrop of the recently reopened Notre-Dame Cathedral, the market features over 40 chalets showcasing French craftsmanship, including jewelry, ceramics, textiles, and leather goods.

Saint-Michel Christmas Market

The Saint-Michel Christmas Market is a charming holiday market held in Place Saint-Michel, in Paris’s historic Latin Quarter. This intimate market features around 20 wooden chalets offering a variety of high-quality, responsibly made products from France, including artisanal crafts, jewelry, and festive decorations. The market is filled with the joy and excitement of the holiday season, and visitors can enjoy traditional French delicacies such as mulled wine, pretzels, and freshly made crêpes in this festive atmosphere. The market’s location near the iconic Saint-Michel Fountain adds to its picturesque setting, making it a must-visit during the holidays.

As the evening settles and the Eiffel Tower glimmers in the distance, there’s a special kind of magic that lingers in the Parisian air during Christmastime. The warmth of the markets, with their glowing lights and cheerful bustle, leaves your heart feeling fuller and your spirit lifted. Whether you’re savouring one last sip of vin chaud or tucking a beautifully wrapped treasure into your bag, these moments are what make Paris at Christmas unforgettable.
