]]> Before leaving for Japan, I researched things to see, places to visit, and, best of all, where to eat! With all the talk about sushi and ramen, your eyes are trained to seek them out as you wander the city. But for me, the most surprising dish that we tried repeatedly was Japanese-style curry! You’ll see Japanese curry everywhere in Japan, displayed as bright plastic models lining the windows of countless restaurants. It’s a dark brown, gravy-like sauce frequently depicted topped with cheese, fried meats, and eggs. 

Historical Background

Japanese curry is unlike any other curry we’ve tried before. Despite its British origins, it’s not like Thai, Indian, or even English curries. The British first introduced Japanese curry to the country during the Meiji era (1868–1912). It was easy to prepare since the main ingredients didn’t require refrigeration. However, curry didn’t gain popularity until the late 1960s. Over time, the Japanese customized the dish, changing the ingredients to make it uniquely Japanese.

Japanese curry is more like a European stew. Start by making a roux (cooking flour and butter), then add a meat stock to deepen the flavour. After cooking it for hours, you end up with a thick, dark brown sauce, almost like a meat gravy. This rich elixir is garnished on Japanese rice with your favourite toppings.

Curry’s Rise in Popularity

Curry only gained widespread popularity in the 1920s after it became available nationwide as an “instant” mix. Housewives could cook curry using pre-made dried cubes, rehydrate them at home, and add leftover proteins and veggies. As more households embraced curry, its presence in restaurants increased, eventually becoming a home and restaurant dining staple.

Spices are also crucial in creating authentic Japanese curry. In summer, Japanese people eat hot and spicy food to cool down by sweating. So you’ll see people enjoying hot and spicy curry morning, noon, and night—regardless of the weather.

The Best Place for Curry: Coco Curry Ichibanya

In my opinion, the best place to satisfy your curry cravings is Coco Curry Ichibanya! This restaurant has been one of Japan’s favourite curry chains since 1978. When you enter, a friendly host will seat you at a table. They offer a full menu in English and other languages in larger cities, making it easy to spot to make your first Japanese Curry order.

While you can always select one of their pre-determined curry combos, I like customizing my order. The first step is choosing your curry sauce; you can select from pork, beef, or hashed beef. Next, you choose your rice portion, and if you opt for a small one (200 grams), you’ll save about a dollar on your order. Then, you choose your spice level, ranging from 1 to 10. Even levels 2 to 3 are intense, but different locations vary in their spice application, so it’s always a bit of a gamble. If you love spice, take the risk; stick to level one (or zero) if you prefer something milder. The last option is to customize your toppings. Options include fried cutlets, shrimp, sausages, vegetables, cheese, kimchi, and garlic. Each item is priced clearly next to the ingredient.

I usually ordered pork curry with chicken cutlets, mushrooms, cheese, and garlic bits! Alongside the curry is a dish of pickles, known as tsukemono, which creates harmony in the meal and counteracts the heaviness of the rich ingredients. They’re the ultimate umami package, and the vinegar helps cut the fatty richness of the dish.

Top Restaurants for Traditional Japanese Curry in Tokyo

Tokyo is a haven for curry lovers, offering a diverse range of restaurants that cater to every palate. From rich, velvety stews to innovative takes on classic flavours, these top restaurants serve some of the best traditional Japanese curries in the city. Craft Curry Brothers $$

Tucked away just north of the famed Yoyogi Park and Meiji Shrine, Craft Curry Brothers is a cozy and innovative curry restaurant known for its artisanal approach to curry making. With a focus on high-quality ingredients and unique flavour combinations, the restaurant brings a fresh and creative twist to traditional Japanese curry. Their standout dish is the keema curry, which is made from minced beef topped with the most gently soft-boiled egg that melts into curry sauce. The curry is served atop fluffy rice, which makes for the most beautiful layered presentation.

Joto Curry $$

Tucked away in a vibrant corner of Tokyo’s Shibuya district, Joto Curry Shibuya is a popular curry spot known for its hearty, flavorful dishes. This cozy eatery specializes in traditional Japanese-style curry, offering a rich and satisfying dining experience to curry enthusiasts and newcomers alike. The Pork Cutlet Curry is the menu star, featuring thick, crispy tonkatsu (pork cutlet) served over a bed of fluffy rice and generously topped with Joto’s signature curry sauce. The sauce is rich and savoury, boasting a complex blend of spices that provides a mild yet flavorful kick. The pork cutlet is fried to perfection, satisfying the dish’s crunch. The curry sauce is cooked slowly to develop a deep, rich flavour, and the cutlets are freshly fried for each order. The result is a meal that balances richness and spice, satisfying even the most discerning curry lovers.

E-itou Curry $$

E-itou Curry, nestled in Tokyo’s quiet Kitazawa district, is a charming restaurant that elevates Japanese curry to a gourmet level. Known for its sophisticated yet comforting dishes, E-itou Curry combines traditional flavours with innovative techniques to create a memorable dining experience. One of the most interesting things about their menu is that the feature curry specialties from all over Japan, such as their Okinawa Chicken Keema and Sapporo curry and even a Pakistani curry for an international twist on the traditional Japanese curry.

Moyan Curry $$

Moyan Curry has several locations around Tokyo, but my favourite is in Akasaka. The secret to Moyan Curry’s distinctive taste lies in its Original Curry Sauce, simmered for over two weeks to develop a deep, complex flavour. The base sauce is made using a blend of spices and herbs and a generous amount of fruits and vegetables, adding sweetness and balance to the dish. Each curry is finished with its unique spice blend, giving it a bold and distinctive taste. Moyan Curry is famous for its Lunch Buffet, where diners can sample various curry flavours and rice, salad, and side dishes. This buffet offers excellent value for money and allows guests to explore the diverse range of curries the restaurant is known for.

Curry Bondy $$$

Curry Bondy is a renowned curry house celebrated for its thick, velvety sauces and homestyle flavours. Established in 1972, the restaurant has built a dedicated following, drawing curry enthusiasts and locals to its cozy locations across Tokyo. Bondy’s curry is distinguished by its unique fruit and vegetable chutney, which adds to its complexity. Apples, other fruits, and vegetables like onions are stir-fried in plenty of butter, then boiled down with red wine to form a chutney. This chutney is blended with butter and spices, including red pepper, resulting in a sweet and spicy curry. All their curry is served with rice and a side of boiled potatoes and butter, which is their own unique addition.

Kitchen Nankai $

Located in the Jinbocho neighbourhood, Kitchen Nankai is a beloved, retro-style eatery known for its hearty and flavorful curries. With a history dating back to 1949, Kitchen Nankai has built a loyal following for its no-nonsense approach to Japanese comfort food, especially its iconic, darkened curry rice. The Curry Rice with Pork Cutlet is a signature dish at Kitchen Nankai Jinbocho. This classic curry features a generous portion of deep-fried pork cutlet (tonkatsu) placed atop a bed of steaming rice and smothered in Kitchen Nankai’s famous dark curry sauce. The curry itself is rich and savoury, with a mild spiciness that complements the crispy tonkatsu perfectly. The sauce’s deep flavour comes from a well-guarded, time-tested recipe that simmers various spices and vegetables for hours. A side of shredded cabbage adds a refreshing crunch that balances the hearty curry and tonkatsu.

Loup de Mer $$

Loup de Mer Curry is a stylish yet unassuming restaurant specializing in omelet rice curry. Omelet Rice Curry, also known as Omurice Curry, is a hearty combination featuring a fluffy omelet wrapped around seasoned fried rice placed atop rich Japanese curry sauce. The curry here is more European-style in flavour, but the addition of the Omurice makes it a must-try for any tourist visiting! The curry, despite its European style, is Japanese in terms of spiciness, but luckily, the creaminess of the eggs helps to balance out any overly spicy flavours. Don’t miss this spot when you’re in town; it’s worth the wait if there’s a line out the door!

Mokubaza $$

Nestled in the heart of Tokyo’s Shibuya neighbourhood, Mokubaza is a cozy and stylish curry spot that combines inventive flair with traditional flavours. The Cheese Keema Curry is a culinary masterpiece and Mokubaza’s signature dish. Served on a round, hot plate, the curry features a rich and flavorful keema curry base—a spiced ground meat mixture topped with a generous layer of melted cheese. The cheese creates a gooey, decadent crown that perfectly complements the bold, spiced keema. A carefully placed raw egg yolk at the center adds a layer of salty richness to the dish.

]]> Since the early 19th century, visitors would come from all over Japan (and the world) to visit the famous Tsukiji Market. Crowds of people walked through aisles upon aisles of freshly caught seafood. Witnessing the buying and selling of seafood before it lands on their dinner plate in restaurants across Tokyo. But in 2018, the Tsukiji Market closed its door as it had outgrown its warehouse in Tsukiji. It moved to a new custom-built building in Koto City and was renamed the Toyosu Fish Market. But despite the wholesale fish market moving out of the neighbourhood, the Outer Market in Tsukiji remains.

This outer market grew up around the Tsukiji Fish Market. It supported the local and tourist populations gathering in this part of Tokyo. The narrow streets and alleys around the market housed some of the best casual restaurants and tiny street food vendors that served fish straight from the market. It also was (and is) where you could find great shopping for kitchen and household goods! Contrary to popular thought, this part of town did not disappear along with the fish market’s move to Koto City. The Tsukiji Outer Market is still a bustling area of Tokyo, even without the fish market nearby. What is the Tsukiji Outer Market?

The outer market is where you’ll find over 400 shops, grocers and small restaurants, crowded into only a few narrow alleys around what was once the largest fish market in Tokyo. The streets of the outer market explode with colour and excitement. Vendors yell at each other and passers-by 24/7, making the place feel full of life even in the very early hours of the morning.

Access

The Tsukiji Outer Market can be easily reached by foot from either Tsukiji Shijo Station on the Oedo Line or Tsukiji Station on the Hibiya Line. Shimbashi Station is the closest option for those using JR trains, with a 20-minute walk to the market.

Everything You Need to Eat!

Fresh Sushi

The outer market is the perfect spot to grab a bit of breakfast. Find a sushi bar with a bunch of old locals eating inside. Those with a line out of the door are always a surefire way to spot a good spot. While they might not have door-to-door access to fresh fish as before, they still bring in the same selection, just from a little further afield.

Tsukiji Itadori Bekkan

Tsukiji Itadori Bekkan is one of the most popular spots in the outer market to find the best sushi and sashimi. It’s made to order, so you know it’s super fresh. It’s definitely on the more expensive side but well worth the price. The seasonal selection by the chef with 10 pieces of sushi and a roll will run you 5100 yen. They also have a Nagomi plate with seven pieces of shish and a roll for 3600. 

Maguro / Tuna 

Tuna is one of the most important fish sold at the fish market. One of the most popular tourist attractions at the new market is the Tuna auction. Early morning risers head to the market at the crack of dawn to witness the bidding wars that break out over the best pieces of fish caught that day. To see what all the fuss is about, you should make a point to seek out some fresh Maguro (tuna) served up on sushi or as sashimi. There are often variety plates that feature different varieties such as bluefin, fatty, medium fatty and regular tuna. A great way to see which is your favourite, so you know what to order next time. These can be expensive as tuna isn’t cheap, so expect to pay upwards of 3000 yen for a multi-piece tray.

Kaisendon

A traditional breakfast dish eaten in Japan is Kaisendon. Kaisendon is a traditional Japanese dish consisting of a bowl of rice (“donburi”) topped with a variety of raw, fresh seafood (“kaizen”) known as sashimi. These can be found throughout the market, and every shop has its own unique take on the dish. You’ll always be served a variety of fish, everything from fatty tuna, shrimp, egg and other fresh daily fish selections. Bowls range from 1500 to 3000 yen.

Grilled Scallops & Fresh Oysters

If you’re a seafood connoisseur and want the best of the best, plenty of shops here will be right up your alley. One of the most popular street foods in the Outer Market is fresh grilled scallops cooked over a charcoal flame. Thanks to the grilling, they have the most delicious flavour, which balances the sweetness of the scallop perfectly. These will run you about 1000 yen.

Another delight of the market is these larger-than-life oysters. They are absolutely oversized but nevertheless delicious. They taste clean and fresh and cost you about 700-800 yen.

Tamagoyaki 

Plenty is more on offer if you’re not in the mood for fresh fish. Tamagoyaki is rolled-up, freshly made Japanese-style omelettes. They are super cheap at only 100 yen and a delicious way to start the day or just as a mid-afternoon snack. An entire slab of tamagoyaki runs about 500 – 800 yen, depending on if there are any additional ingredients. Great to share with friends.

Fresh Fruit

Tsukiji has always had a wide selection of fresh fruit vendors selling some of the best produce in the city. Is there anything more precious than the delicately wrapped fruits of Japan? I think not. Highly recommend, especially when in season, the strawberries. Japan is well known for its perfectly grown strawberries. And while they might seem pricey, they are spectacular. They even sell white strawberries which are super unique and even more delicious. A bowl of fresh strawberries generally costs about 500 yen for a selection.

Uni

One of the most uniquely Japanese delicacies has got to be fresh uni. Uni, or sea urchin, is the edible portion of the inside of spiny sea urchins. The taste is unrivalled. It’s almost buttery, with a sea-like flavour. I love it, and getting it fresh from the market is one of the best places to try it. They serve it on its own in various spots in Tsukiji and on sushi rice if you prefer to try it with a little bit of rice. Uni is a little pricey, a bowl of pure uni will run you about 1500 yen, but a single piece of uni sushi will be much less expensive.

Waygu

Another food item that many people coming to Japan might be looking for is Waygu beef. Wagyu is the classification given to four different Japanese breeds of beef cattle. It is widely known for being the most tender, delicious beef you can eat. In the Tsukiji market, you’ll see lots of stands selling sticks of Wagyu beef. Some shops sell thinner slices of beef you can pick out, and they cook it right before you. Overall, I prefer to have my Waygu in a restaurant. But if this is your only opportunity to try it, you can always pick out a small slice to ensure you try this pedigree cut of beef at least once!

Unagi

Another traditional dish served in the market is Unagi. Unagi is freshly grilled eel, slathered in a thick, sweet and savoury sauce which is carmelized over the fish as it cooks over a hot grill. You can find sticks of Unagi for around 300 yen. If you’ve never had Unagi, this is a great opportunity to try it out!

Ice Cream

If you’re in the mood for desserts, soft-serve ice cream will always be on offer all over the outer market. Dozens of different flavours to choose from spill out along the streets. Vendors are ready to give a sweet treat to anyone walking by, even on colder days.

Daifuku Mochi

Mochi is one of my favourite Japanese sweets. Mochi is made from pounding sweet rice flour into a gummy texture wrapped around different fillings like macha or sweet red bean paste. In the Tsukiji Market, you can find mochi topped with a fresh red or white strawberry that amps the flavour up to 100!

Shopping

Knife Shops

The Tsukiji Outer market is home to many stores selling specialty chef and kitchen utensils. Most of these were opened to be geared toward sushi chefs preparing their fish. But today, they are a little more broad and open to everyone. Inside you’ll find professional-grade knives. Japanese knives are known as some of the best in the world, and if you’re looking for an upgrade to your kitchen collection, this is such a wonderful souvenir to treat yourself to. Something you will use for the rest of your life.

Ceramics

The ceramics in the market were my favourite thing to pursue. They were so inexpensive, but the designs were incredible. The vibrant colours and intricate paintings were handmade, each a little different from the next. I would pick out my favourite patterns from each shop and, at the end of the day, have a little collection of four perfectly mismatched, but that’s what makes it so charming.

Spices & Dried Goods

Tsukiji is also a wonderful place to shop for spices and dried goods. One of the best things to look for is homemade Furikake. Furikake is a dry Japanese condiment made from green and nori seaweed flakes. In addition to the seaweed, there are a variety of additional ingredients added for the various flavours, from sesame seeds, fish flakes, spices and more. Furikake is used to sprinkle on top of rice, veggies, and anything you like. But the ones made fresh from the market are even more special and a great gift to bring home.

Namiyoke Inari Shrine

While in the market, you should definitely make a visit to the small Namiyoke Inari Shrine. This shrine was the guardian of the marketplace and its traders when the old fish market was here. The name means “protection from waves,” which is very suitable for all the fishermen who pass by daily. Although the fisherman has moved, the shrine remains. The courtyard is dotted with various memorial plaques and carvings donated by trade groups in the marketplace. An excellent way to bring happiness and prosperity to the traders.

One of the greatest things to do while walking around the Tsukiji Outer Market is exploring. Get lost, and you’ll always discover something fantastic. The smells from each alleyway changes from street to street. Sweet, sour, fishy, spicy and pungent. A feast for the senses. 

The greatest thing about this place is that after the exodus of the Fish market, the area became a little more local. Sure, it’s still immensely popular with tourists, but it’s equally just a spot for locals to grab something to eat on their way to work. You’ll pass hundreds of people on their way to grab a snack before they get on the train or mothers pushing prams trying to do their morning shopping.

I love watching locals doing their thing, living in their city, and experiencing the environments the way they were supposed to be experienced. Not as guests, as settlers.

The outer market is busy, loud and unmissable. Make sure you carve out time in your next trip to Tokyo to explore and eat all there is on offer!

]]> Harajuku was probably the neighbourhood I was most excited to visit on my first trip to Tokyo! For as long as I’d read mangas and watched animes, I’d dreamed of strolling down the colourful and cute streets of Harajuku. When we arrived, it was a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon (which is possibly the worst time to see it). There were hundreds of people there, so many in fact that we could barely walk down the street without pushing through the horde. The next time we visited we decided to come down very early in the morning and found the streets practically empty.

There are pluses and minuses to both scenarios. While seeing the bright and colourful streets empty is a pleasure to just have it to yourself, when it’s busy you can admire all the local kawaii kids even chance at seeing a few Lolitas meandering around. Exploring Harajuku is more than just walking down the famed Takeshita Dori Street. There are so many side alleys and hidden shops you need to explore to get a real sense of what Harajuku is all about and not just the touristy side of things. I’ve tried to make this list an easy to follow walking path from the station so you don’t have to backtrack too much! The map to all the locations listed here is at the bottom of this post!

Access

Harajuku is an easy destination to arrive at. The Harajuku Station on the JR East Yamanote Line lets you off right across from Takeshita Dori. You can also get off at the Meiji-jingumae ‘Harajuku’ Station served by the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line. You can even take the Tokyo Metro on the Fukutoshin Line to get here, so no matter where you are coming from, it’s only a train ride away.

Outside the train station on busy days you can see hundreds of teenagers hanging out, listening to cute boys singing K-Pop songs and selling their CDs. Girls giggle and blush as the singers point at them as they sing the next romantic ballad.

History

Harajuku initially became the hot spot for Japanese fashion back in the 1970’s. A large fashion house called “Palais France” was built on Meiji Street near the exit of Takeshita Street and sold fashion-forward clothes, accessories and more. With this one large store drawing people down to this area more popular fashion chains started opened up. Then small independent retailers popped up to take advantage of the fashionable crowds.

Harajuku isn’t just one street. It’s the name of a general area spreading from Harajuku Station to Omotesando. In this area, you’ll find dozens of tiny alleyways and side streets where you can discover the newest in alternative, youth fashion. Although Harajuku has become more of a tourist attraction and has lost some of its original uniqueness, there are still lots of interesting stores if you get away from the main drag. Streets like Cat Alley are where you can still find independent retailers selling the hottest Japanese fashions and lifestyle accessories. In addition to clothes and accessories, you can also find Japanese souvenirs at pretty good prices, so it’s a good place to pick up some presents for back home while you’re here.

Modern Day Harajuku

Although the masses of people seem overwhelming, these Sunday crowds have been happening since 1977, when they closed down the street to traffic and turned it into a pedestrian only walkway. On Sundays you’d see local bands gather to play and fashionable Lolitas, punks and creatives modelling their incredible wearable creations. Now a days, more and more people are moving away from the streets and over to the nearby Yoyogi park to gather on Sundays, but you can still see your fair share of uniquely dressed individuals any day of the week, shopping for the perfect accessory to complete their outfit.

In addition to the clothes along the street, there are two other big draws. One is the incredible architecture and design seen on the outsides of these buildings and in their store windows. The other is the inventive food being served up from tiny little nooks and crannies under brightly coloured awnings.

Takeshita Street

Takeshita Street is the main street you’ll enter through. It is a busy pedestrian shopping lane. No cars are allowed after a certain time in the morning and by 11 am you’ll see why. The entire street at busy hours can be completely filled with people, crowds so thick you’ll barely be able to make out the road below. The entrance to the street is always decorated with a different design made out of balloons. Along this street are many of the most popular shops in Harajuku. While some are worth skipping, others are historic establishments which helped put this street on the map.

Paris Kids

Paris Kids was probably my favourite store. Inside are thousands of accessories in amazing kawaii (cute) Japanese designs. Doughnut shaped earrings and cute kitten headbands were plastered all over the walls. Everything was really cheap, most things going at a rate of 3 for $10, 5 for $15, etc., etc. Since it was almost Halloween when we visited most of the specialty items were Halloween themed and seemed the perfect place to visit if you needed a quick Halloween costume or just some random accessories to get you in the spirit.

Purikura NOA

Purikura are the Japanese version of photobooths. Except, like with everything in Japan, it is taken to the next level. Down the stairs, just off Takeshita Street, you’ll find the greatest selection of purikura photobooths. Purikura is where you can get those classic Japanese printed photos where you can add text, stickers and give your face the “anime” treatment. The Purikura experience costs 500 yen ($5 US). Once you finish your photoshoot, you’ll get to decorate, alter, add filters and text to all the photos you took. This location in Harajuku definitely has the best selection in terms of decorations you can add to the photos. They even have a dressing and makeup area where you can make sure you look picture perfect.

Daiso

One of my favourite shops in Harajuku was their Daiso location. Daiso has now also found its way into the US, but we still don’t have it in Canada. Inside this massive four-story building is one of the largest 100 Yen shops in Tokyo. You’ll find anything from clothes to kitchenware, food and best of all – stationary. Unlike dollar stores in North America, everything is actually 100 yen ($1), and you’ll find some absolute bargains for items you’d never believe are only $1. This is a GREAT place to grab some souvenirs. You’ll find so many awesome gifts for only $1 which you’ll also see in touristy locations but for at least three times the price.

Etude House

Etude House, a Korean makeup company, have installed a dollhouse inspired storefront right here in the centre of Harajuku. Korean makeup is known the world over as one of the best, and even local Japanese girls will travel down here to get their hands on some of these goods. The packaging design on their products is phenomenal and a gift in itself. Makeup makes for such a unique souvenir and something people will really enjoy using.

Totti Candy Factory

If you’ve ever spent some time cruising the #Harajuku hashtag you’re bound to have seen dozens of pictures of cute girls smiling with GIANT cones of rainbow cotton candy. These amazing candy creations are found at Totti Candy Factory. While there is often a line-up, it moves quickly and while waiting in line you can observe the candy creators inside molding these amazing sweet treats. They are gorgeous to look at and even better to eat!

Panama Boy

Located just off the Takeshita Street, you’ll step away from the main crush of people and suddenly just one street over you’ll find yourself in a much more peaceful side alley. Down the alley you’ll find Panama Boy. It easy to spot since there are piles of clothing simply pouring off the side of this building. Panama Boy is a vintage and thrift store with a collection of custom made as well. They have perfectly curated sections and nothing feels used at all, it’s so lovingly cared for and feels like a bespoke custom brand. This shop does a great job in finding bright and colourful pieces and doesn’t just focus on brand names.

Marion Crepes

Crepes have had a surge in popularity in Japan. It might seem like a recent phenomenon since the creation of Instagram and “food selfies”, but crepes have been a Japanese fascination for over 40 years. Marion Crepes has stood in the same spot since 1976. They brought pancakes to Japan, but instead of the traditional savoury crepes you found in Europe, they added brightly coloured fruits and ice cream to their desserts. Now, you’ll pass many different crepe shops, each with dozens of flavours showcased by intricately designed plastic models. You don’t even need a knife and fork; they come folded into a cone for a portable sweet treat to enjoy while pursuing the local shops.

Zaku Zaku Harajuku

One of the most popular food trends to hit the streets of Harajuku in the last few years has been Zaku Zaku and their famous croquant chou (crispy cream puffs). These delicate pastries are covered in toffee crunch and then filled with fresh cream from Hokkaido. Hokkaido cream is world famous and is what a lot of ice cream here in Japan is made of. CANDY A･GO･GO!

This candy shop is not only a feast for your mouth but also for your eyes! I came in here solely to look at the awesome designs and decorations covering the walls but left with a bag full of candies which were almost too pretty to eat…almost.

Closet Child & Bodyline

Although Lolitas were once always seen walking the streets of Harajuku, their popularities has shrunk over the years. They do like the attention, but it became too overwhelming, and often it’s almost impossible for a Lolita to walk down the streets of Harajuku without being hounded for hundreds of selfies. But, there are still many Lolita fashion shops in Harajuku selling darling, victorian and gothic inspired dresses.

Closet Child and Bodyline are two popular shops located right beside each other along Takeshita Street. Closet Child has amazing prices for Lolita style clothing which usually is pretty expensive. Even if you’re not a Lolita yourself, visiting these stores is a lot of fun. This type of clothing is so fantastical and a joy to behold. Bodyline features a lot of wigs and costumes for anime cosplay. If you’ve ever wanted an anime costume for Halloween this is the place to pick it up!

Chapter World

Along Takeshita Street, you’ll see dozens of shops selling shoes. But a lot of these are cheap knock-offs and won’t last you long enough to make the purchase worth it. There are however a few shops which are worth your time and feature some truly incredible designs. Chapter World is reliably the best place to find kicks in the city. They’re a chain outlet but the store with the best selection is here in Harajuku. If you can’t afford a new pair or don’t have room in your suitcase, you should definitely check out their selection of rainbow laces to jazz up even the most casual pair of shoes.

WEGO

My FAVOURITE store in Harajuku is WEGO! There are various WEGO’s in Harajuku but I like this one the best since it has a great selection and is further away from the main entrance to Harajuku. Because it’s a little more hidden, this means the shop is often less crowded and therefore more relaxed. WEGO is a trendy fashion brand which blends Japanese pop and American vintage influences into their designs. Their prices are super cheap and if you buy more than $75 US you can use your passport to get a tax free exemption. I honestly had to stop myself from buying up the entire store but came home with a few choices pieces. Every time I put them on I get to remember this fantastic trip and all these memories from Japan.

Santa Monica Crepes

Santa Monica Crepes has some of the best signage and I loved visiting their shop. But since I enjoy Marion Crepes more I always opt for Santa Monica’s decadent bubble tea parfaits. These sweet drinks are topped off with whipped cream, fresh fruit, ice cream and even sometimes a bit of cake. They’re as beautiful as the plastic models and taste even better.

Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku

As you walk towards the intersection between Omotesando and Harajuku you’ll find it’s hard to miss Tokyu Plaza. This incredible building houses all the high-end fashion brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Gucci and Chanel. As you approach your eye will be immediately caught by the dazzling kaleidoscope of mirrors that serves as the entrance to the mall. They call this the stargate. And with good reason. The building was designed by Hiroshi Nakamura. He wanted it to reflect, “the time and the season, for an ever-changing view,”. Standing outside or in, you can see all around the crossing. The people, the landscape and the colours that change within it.

Starbucks Rooftop Patio

In the Tokyu Plaza, take the elevator straight to the top and head to the rooftop Starbucks. I know, I know, I should be telling you to try more international places than just Starbucks, but trust me, we’re not here for the coffee. Opposite the Starbucks on the top floor is a pair of double doors that lead you out onto this enormous outdoor patio. There are hundreds of seats, both at tables and along these beautiful wooden benches and staggered stairs steps which serve as more places to sit. From here you have an amazing view across Harajuku and the stunning garden spread across the rooftop. You absolutely do not have to buy a coffee to stay up here. I even decided to run to the conbini before I arrived and had my own little picnic up here on the cheap while enjoying this priceless view!

Chicago Omotesando

Chicago is one of my favourite vintage outlets in the city. They have a seemingly unending assortment of vintage finds and their selection of designer goods is truly impeccable. But my favourite part of their shop are the vintage silk kimonos. I found such beautiful designs, every single one of which I put on made me feel like Japanese royalty. Kimonos are such a traditional piece of Japanese history and one which I always recommend people pick up as a souvenir. But getting a vintage one feel that much more special, like you’re buying a piece of history.

Alice On Wednesday

Down the street a little bit is a tiny doorway which leads you into a fairytale world. Alice On Wednesday is one of a few different Alice in Wonderland themed stores and restaurants in Tokyo. Inside this shop you’ll uncover three floors, each one designed to reflect aspects of the famed story. You’ll come upon the White Room where Alice drinks the shrinking potion, the Queen of Hearts’ room and the Mad Hatter’s room. The shop sells various accessories in the ‘wonderland‘ style as well as bottled beverages with “drink me” labels. It’s a great place to go if you’re a big Alice fan!

Cat Street

On the East side of Harajuku, you’ll find the famed ‘Cat Street‘. This pedestrian street is where you’ll find the majority of the alternative brands, vintage shops and hip restaurants and cafes. Cat Street is where the original Harajuku hipsters have now fled with the onset of so many tourists along Takeshita Street. These pedestrianised roads have a different feel to them, greenery seems to pour over the edges of buildings and there is a more peaceful, laid back feeling to the stores and laneways.

RAGTAG

RAGTAG both looks and feels more like a department store than a second-hand designer clothing store. The Japanese are very passionate about reducing waste and you really do see less fast fashion here in lieu of stores like RAGTAG which have branches all over Japan. They verify every piece of clothing they sell so you know you’re getting the real deal. While the more rare pieces are pretty costly, this is a great opportunity to nab yourself some designer pieces for a great price!

Harajuku Gyozaro

If you need somewhere to replenish after all that walking and shopping, look no further! Harajuku Gyozaro is a cheap and delicious option offering steamed and fried gyoza. The gyoza costs only 290 yen ($2.50 US), which is an absolute steal! Try to avoid the lunch and dinner rush, because this is a popular spot and it gets PACKED. Going on off hours is a great way to sneak in without too long of a line up. There isn’t much selection so it’s easy to order, just try to figure out how many orders of these delicious treats you’ll want!

Kiddy Land

Right along the main road as you exit the quiet Cat Street you’ll find the candy apple red storefront which is Kiddy Land. Despite the word ‘kid’ in the name of the store, this place is for everyone. It’s multiple floors of delightful toys, clothing, home goods and stationary are themed after popular cartoon characters or nostalgic anime figures. My favourite was all the amazing Sailor Moon goods and My Little Pony retro items. The entire place as a joy to peruse and we even discovered ‘Gudetama‘ here which soon became our favourite Sanrio character.

6% DokiDoki

6% DokiDoki is one of Harajuku’s most iconic shops. Selling crazy coloured clothing and accessories, their unique designs became the origin of the term ‘decora’ fashion. The store looks like a Lisa Frank sticker book exploded! All their items are made just for those adults who never grew up. Hearts, stars and sparkles are mandatory in everything you see, and neon is the base layer for almost everything. I had a great time exploring the store, everything is created with such love, and even just a small piece would brighten up any outfit. The cost of these clothes was pretty high, but for such unique items, it is something worth picking up.

Rainbow Pancake

The craze for impossibly fluffy and jiggly pancakes is one still going strong in Japan and one of the best places to eat them is at Rainbow Pancake cafe. The line up can get pretty long here so the earlier you arrive the better chance you’ll have at getting a table more easily. And obviously, weekdays are less busy than on the weekends. These pancakes are made with a lot of eggs (to give them that fluffy texture) so the taste is both savoury and sweet. Top it off with over a dozens different toppings and you’ll find yourself in food heaven!

Eddy’s Ice Cream

If you didn’t get your fill of sweetness at Rainbow Pancake then head down the winding alleyways towards Eddy’s Ice Cream. This place can be found easily by the amazing pastel painted exteriors and generally long line up outside the door. The interior is miniature but its neon pink painted walls and brightky coloured ice creams are more than enough to make it feel larger than life. Their ice creams are perfectly Instagram worthy but also super delicious. You can either choose one of their designs or build your own custom creation!

Santa Monica Vintage

Santa Monica Vintage feels like it should belong on the west coast of California and not in the crowded centre of Tokyo. Those white walls and peaceful music playing throughout transports you away from the hustle and bustle of the city. In here you’ll find some really unique pieces of clothing all with a a definite bohemian vibe.

The Airstream Garden

To finish your day in Harajuku, head over to the Airstream Garden. This coffee shop is located inside an old 1930s Airstream trailer but has a cute little sitting area outside, made out of staggered wooden steps. Here you can both enjoy the delicious coffee made inside and soak in the last little bits of Harajuku. While it might get the reputation of being a very touristy place, Harajuku is popular for a reason. Don’t let the crowds scare you off! This magical neighbourhood is worth your time and you’ll find so many more places other than the ones listed here to make your trip to Harajuku all that more special but I hope this list gets you started!

Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum

The Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum showcases the works of the late Taro Okamoto, a famous Japanese painter and sculptor. It’s a super unique museum that is truly a hidden gem. His exhibits different pieces from his collection on rotation so there is always something different to see.

]]> In the cozy seaside village of Yokohama, you’ll find the fabled Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum. Although it’s dubbed a “museum,” your experience is more in line with a trip to Epcot. The museum is almost like visiting a food-themed amusement park which sends you back in time in tastes and visuals.

Access to the Museum

Most people who visit the museum are coming from Tokyo on a day trip to Yokohama. The trip takes about 50 minutes. Take the JR Tokaido Line straight to Higashi-Kanagawa Station. Change lines to the Yokohama City Subway and take the green line to Shinyokohama station. From there it’s an 8-minute walk to the museum.

Admission and Hours

To enter the museum, the fee is 310 yen ($3) for adults and 100 yen ($1) for children and seniors. The entry price is very low, but you are asked to purchase at least two bowls of ramen when inside as a part of the admission. There is no way to monitor this; it’s more of an honour system. But trust me, it’s not difficult to want to try a lot more than just two varieties. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. every day except for holidays. The ramen shops inside stop serving 30 minutes before the museum closes.

What is Ramen?

Ramen is a Japanese noodle dish from China and is now one of the most popular things to eat in Japan. So much so that many people might even assume that ramen is originally Japanese. The museum is dedicated to educating people about the flavours, traditions and specialties that different kinds of ramen from all of Japan possess.

About the Museum

The Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum was first opened in 1994 as a one-stop shop for people to sample all varieties of ramen, which has been dubbed the national dish of Japan. The museum’s interior is designed to replicate the streets of Japan in 1958. It was in 1958 that the first instant ramen was invented in Japan, so the year is of great significance to the museum.

Gallery Floor

The museum is made up of three floors. The first floor is the gallery, where plaques on the walls detail the history of ramen noodles over the years. Along one wall, there is a mosaic of instant ramen bowl designs sold in convenience stores worldwide, highlighting the most attractive designs. The information and history are pretty bare bones, so if you’re looking for something more in-depth, check out the Ramen Museum in Osaka, which is much more thorough.

Street Replica Dining Room

After touring the gallery, you descend into the 2-storey basement, where immediately you are awestruck upon walking into a scale replica of the town of Shitamachi, a small suburb of Tokyo set in 1985. The 1950s was a boom time for Tokyo, and it is looked back at with rose-tinted glasses by many older Japanese historians. This was the Showa era when young people still lived in small villages, cared for their parents and cherished the small-town lifestyle. Those same towns are almost fading away because they are losing all their young people to major cities like Tokyo.

Decor of the Museum

The details in the design of this faux city are immaculate. The scene is set at dusk, and the city’s twinkling lights have started to shine. We see a variety of ramen shops surrounding the exterior of an old train station in the country. These ramen shops would catch commuters on their way home and be central to small-town life. There is a lived-in feeling to this place, a grittiness that helped the authenticity of the experience.

Along the walls are fake advertisements and retro signage — posters advertising rooms for rent, blockbuster movies and even the latest in electronics. Clothes hung out to dry, and a subtle breeze blew through the air.

The Ramen Varieties

There are nine different restaurants open throughout the two lower floors serving up all sorts of different variations of ramen, each specializing in a regional flavour profile. The small brochure you receive with your admission describes every shop and what they serve. But the best way to explore them is to try them all.

To distinguish the different types of ramen, the place to first look is at the broth. In the south, they use pork bone (tonkatsu) broth; in the north, they use a clear chicken and vegetable broth seasoned with salt and a pad of butter; in other regions, they prefer a soy sauce or miso broth to bring in some extra flavour. My favourite is the pork bone broth. The broth is thick and fatty, mixed with the noodles. This ramen is a perfect, hearty dish.

Other regional specialties include toppings and noodles. You can have wontons, roast pork, bamboo shoots and (due to the Korean influence) a massive helping of hot chilis. There is even a vegetarian option made without pork broth for those with that dietary restriction.

How to Order

There are usually two lines in front of each shop; one to line up to purchase a meal ticket and the other to get your seat inside. You need to buy a ticket for your ramen from a small vending machine outside the shop before you can get seated. All the buttons are in both English and Japanese, so don’t worry about having to translate. Once you’ve bought your ticket, you can line up and be given a seat inside.

One important thing to note, you cannot sit inside the restaurant without purchasing ramen. So get ready to eat a lot, or you’ll have to wait outside like a chump. I had to do this while my husband enjoyed more noodles. You can buy a “mini ramen,” which is about 2/3 the size of a regular bowl but will allow you to fill up more throughout your visit.

Once seated inside, these small shop fronts open up into regular-sized ramen restaurants, and you’d never even know you weren’t on the streets of Tokyo. There are tables for groups, doubles and even single seats around the bar, so you won’t have to wait too long to be seated. Weekends and holidays are busier, but on weekdays we barely had to wait at all. Find the shortest line and start there.

The Outdoor Bar

In the centre of the room are a few tables and an outdoor bar where you can order a variety of local alcoholic beverages. In the summertime, they also offer ‘kakigori,’ which is shaved ice covered in sweet syrup flavoured to your preference. Sitting out under the twinkle lights and neon signs, this is a great place to take a break between ramen dishes.

Don’t’ Skip Exploring the rest of the Museum

After you’ve filled up on ramen, you can walk around the first basement level to check out the “dashi” or dime shops. These little shops sell penny candy, old retro toys and even pin-up photos of vintage Japanese film stars. Fill up a small plastic basket with all the sweets the little kid inside you desires.

The side street around the ramen shops weaves around the museum; hidden alleys and dead ends make the entire place feel real. See if you can find your way to the ice cream shops where you can cool down after all that hot ramen. There is also a small bar if you feel like a break between rounds of ramen.

Wandering the narrow alleyways, there are also fake storefronts selling cigarettes, cameras, cosmetics and more. Crawling up the wall are dozens upon dozens of ads written in Japanese. I wished I had been able to read them, as I’m sure they helped set the scene for the surroundings.

Gift Shop

On the upper level, you’ll find the gift shop. This shop has many ramen-themed trinkets and souvenirs, and they even sell vacuumed-packed ramen packages you can customize with your favourite ingredients to take home with you. They can also print a custom package design with your face imprinted on the packet. These were so cool, but be sure you are allowed to bring them into your country before assuming you can bring them home, as some customs might not let the meat products through. It’s still a great thing to do, and you even eat back at your hotel before you head on the plane home.

While some people might not think the trip down to Yokohama is worth visiting this museum, Yokohama is such an incredible city, and I highly recommend adding it to your itinerary. While exploring this seaside city, make some time to visit the Shinyokohama Ramen Museum and experience the entirety of Tokyo’s ramen scene in one afternoon. Come hungry and leave happy!

Sights & Attractions

Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens

One of the first places I came after getting off the plane in Australia was to the Royal Botanic Gardens. There is something about wandering the green, tree-lined pathways and brightly coloured flower gardens which put me at ease and made the jetlag float away. Despite being a stone’s throw away from the centre of town, this place feels a mile away from the hustle and bustle. If you’ve never been to Australia before, this is also a wonderful place to get to know the different flora and fauna which dot the landscape. Keep your eye opens for the various birds which call this place home. Coming from North America, seeing wild cockatoos, parrots, wattlebird and lyrebirds is like stepping into another world.

The Sydney Opera House

On every postcard, every brochure, every travel guide and even every travel blog, you’ll find pictures of the Sydney Opera House. Even if you’re not a fan of opera, studying the building as an architectural masterpiece is a must for any Australian visitor. Designed by modern architect Jorn Utzon, it was created to resemble a set of opening ship sails in the shape of abstracted seashells. While the design has been somewhat divisive, you need to make your way down to the harbour to see it for yourself. It is now known as one of the most iconic buildings of the 20th century and facing out onto magnificent seaside there’s no better view in the city.

The Blue Mountains

An hour and a half north-west of Syndey are the stunning Blue Mountains. The first time I came here I couldn’t believe all this beauty could be found in Australia. When I first pictured Australia, I thought of desert landscapes with red rocks and golden sand. But the Blue Mountains are a lush panorama of brilliant green treetops, bright blue skies and sparkling waterfalls. If you’ve been looking to escape the city, this is the perfect day-trip. Standing atop the lookout point, you can study the Three Sisters rock formation, indulge in the various bakeries which serve locals and tourists alike, as well as the hike down the mountainside to explore the trails and waterfalls below.

Jenolan Caves

While you’ve made your way up to the Blue Mountains, be sure to stop by the Jenolan Caves. The caves contain stunning underground rivers, angelic limestone formations and ancient stalactites. The Jenolan caves require a guided tour ticket but the guides are well worth the price of admission as their fantastical storytelling abilities make the unmoving rocks, come to life.

Government House Sydney

In the midst of the busy city centre stands, what looks like an old castle. Built in 1846, less than a hundred years after Australia was colonized. The Government House in Sydney was home to Australia’s various Governors over the years but is now a museum. The building is so important due to the beautiful architecture. Its neo-gothic influences can be found along the walls, structure and in the art inside. While gothic architecture might not be what you think of when you this Australia, this is what is so wonderful about this country. It surprises you ar every corner.

Take a Visit around the Rocks

The Rocks was originally the first European settlement in Australia, established in 1788. While the first building erected here was made of thatch and wattle, some of the houses were made of local sandstone and still stand today. This small area of town is now a very popular tourist district but the history which lies in between the souvenir shops can still be found if you look closely enough. Visit Cadman’s cottage, the oldest residential house in Sydney, for a peek into the daily life of Australian’s in the 1800s. If you are someone with an affection for the macabre, you might consider taking a guided ghost tour of the Rocks after the sun goes down. While they might not be “scary” they are full of history about the darker sides of Australia and it’s criminal contingent.

Walk the University of Sydney Campus

While in the city centre, I implore you to take a walk around the University of Sydney. Founded in 1850, it has some of the most marvelous architecture in the entire city. Today, it is ranked as one of the top 10 most beautiful university in the world. Most of the buildings are open to the public, so you can wander around the hallways, courtyards and even food halls. The campus feels like Hogwarts in many ways since it’s design was inspired by many old English schools. The cafeteria serves up reasonably priced food since they’re for students, so if you’re looking for a bargain and a great place for a picnic, head on down here.

Street Art

Sydney, being a huge metropolitan city, is a hub for fantastical street art. And there is most definitely something about Australian art which I find absolutely compelling. Being so far removed from the rest of the world, they are both inspired by the west but also create something completely new for themselves since they don’t feel compelled to be like them. Most of this can be explored by taking the side streets instead of main roads. New pieces pop up every day and disappear just as quickly. So take leave of the main sights and see what you can discover off the beaten track!

Activities

Relax on the Sand of Bondi Beach

When you think Australia, you think of the beach. And the most iconic of all the beaches in Sydney is Bondi Beach. Many will argue there are more intimate, less touristy places to spend your time at but this beach is so popular for a reason. It’s way more than JUST a BEACH. Bondi is easily accessible by public transit so even if you’re not renting a car, you can make your way here with ease. The beach itself is nestled between two suburban landscapes, which dot the skyline with bursts of colour. Surrounding the beach are dozens of shops and food vendors selling iconic Australian grub to picnic with on the sands. The atmosphere is full of life and energy. So grab a towel and head into the water. But if you’re scared to get in the ocean this next point will be right up your alley.

Swim in Ocean Pool

An Ocean Pool? “Now, what’s that?” you might say. For many young children learning to swim, being thrown right into the ocean is a little daunting. So is braving waters where sharks are known to wander if you’re someone who is paranoid about that (although it’s very very rare.) These man-made pools are situated beside the sea and filled with ocean water. Entry to the pools is only $7 and well worth the price for peace of mind if you dream of swimming in the ocean, but too afraid of what creatures lie beneath. Bondi isn’t the only place where you can find these ocean pools but their is one of the most iconic.

The Bondi to Coogee Boardwalk

Every time someone asks me what they should do while in Syndey, the first thing I tell them is to be sure to do this coastal walk. The Bondi to Coogee boardwalk takes you along the cliffside next to the ocean to see various parks, the famous Waverley Cemetery, many different scenic picnic spots and access to the best swimming holes in the city. The walk takes about 3 hours at a leisurely pace but if you want to stop at the various cafes and restaurants along the way you could easily spend the entire day out there. Be sure to bring hats and sunscreen since most of this area is uncovered.

Take a Visit to the Taronga Zoo

While spending time at a zoo might seem like a strange “must-do” for any seasoned traveller, I would recommend it to everyone. Taronga Zoo is truly an incredible place with views across the bay to the cityscape of Sydney Harbour, a view unlike you’ll get anywhere else. The zoo is set along the cliffside and you walk up and down lush green pathways, where the animal exhibits seem nestled in naturally.

To get to the zoo, you have to take a ferry from Circular Quay, then a cable car up to the entrance of the zoo. Both of these modes of transportation are not just necessary but a beautiful tour of the city itself. Inside the zoo you’ll get to see many different animals unique to Australia like koalas, platypus’, and, of course, kangaroos. If you have a little bit of extra cash to splash out you can even stay overnight at the park in their Roar and Snore luxury tents situated atop the zoo where you’ll have the best view of Syndey this side of the harbour.

The Manly Ferry

The waterways of Sydney are home to dozens upon dozens of tour companies, willing to take tourists out for putters around the harbour. But if you’re looking for a scenic ride at a quarter of the price, jump on the Manly Ferry! You can ride the Ferry from Circular Quay down to Manly Terminal and despite it being nothing more than public transportation, the ride is an incredible way of taking in the sights of the city.

Walk Across Harbour Bridge

While some daredevils might want to take the Bridge walk to the extreme and climb across the top of the bridge, for the rest of us who are either too scared or too poor, a gentle stroll along the pedestrian walkway is still an iconic experience for anyone visiting Australia or Sydney for the first time. At night, the city lights up and if you look over to the north you can see the lights of Luna Park dazzling across the night sky.

Art Gallery of NSW

If you love art, you need to make your way to the Art Gallery of NSW. While the building is an impressive monument to Australian architecture and their collection of worldly’s artists is a pleasure to behold, the real gift of this place is its Australian collection. And for good reason. Blnded with historical, modern and indigenous artists, these painting and installations help you connect with the Australian culture and history in a way that is otherwise sometimes hard to understand.

Surfing Lessons

My favourite place for Surf Lessons is Manly Surf School. Maybe I’m biased since it’s my favourite beach but Manly’s slightly less crowded waters also are great for learning to surf without constantly running into people like you would at Bondi. Lessons run here several times a day, in the busy seasons be sure to call to book in advance. You can just try it out for the day, or give it a whole weekend to see if you can master this very Australian endeavour. You can’t come back from a trip to Australia without someone asking you, “did you go surfing?!” and you want the answer to be “YES!”

Picnic at the Paddington Reservoir

In the early 19th century, all of Sydney’s water reserves were supplied through the Paddington Reservoir. But as early as they were created, they were shut down due to industrial improvements in the distribution of water. The reservoir lay dormant for years until 2009 when the architecturally stunning reservoirs were transformed from forgotten history into an immaculate garden park for the public. You can now explore this treasure of Sydney’s past, traversing raised walkways, lunching on hidden picnic tables and simply getting lost in this incredible space.

Where to Eat!

Spice Alley’s Asian Fusion Feast

Australia’s proximity to Asia results in some of the best Asian fusion restaurants the world over. And the best place to dig into this incredible cuisine can be found along Kensington street, along their self-titled “Spice Alley”. Spice Alley is made up of 18th-century historic townhomes and modern restaurants. The tiny laneway feels like hidden passageway. Hanging Chinese lanterns colour the skyline and the smells of Singapore pour out from the kitchen and onto the street. Many of the restaurants here spill out onto the streets on small patio tables so you can eat in the open and enjoy that Australian air!

Try the Local Cuisine at Paddy’s Farmers Market

Strolling the aisles of a farmer’s market early in the morning, smelling the fresh produce, studying the foreign offerings and listening to the vendors scream out their daily specials is one of the best ways to start any day. Paddy’s Market is Sydney’s largest farmers markets open. It has been open for over 150 years now and houses over 1,000 stalls, so there is something for any appetite. If you’re looking for cheap souvenir this is also a great place to come since the stalls also sell fashions, accessories, home good and yes, souvenirs.

Party on Oxford Street

If there is one thing that Australians do better than anyone else it’s partying! This country eternally put a smile on my face. Oxford Street is one of Sydney’s most vibrant neighbourhoods which still retains a ton of historical charm. It is the heart of gay and lesbian culture and as such has dozens of hip bars and restaurants that are often better options for tourists than the hard knock pubs of the inner city. Everyone here is so welcoming and friendly and if you happen to be here over Pride weekend, get ready for a wild ride! There are so many bars to hop in and out of along the street but my favourite is Pocket Bar. This hipster bar is filled with modern street art on the walls, vintage couches on the floor and some of the best cocktails in the city in your hand!

Sydney Fish Market

Australia is surrounded on all sides by the ocean, so it should be no big surprise that seafood is one of its most vibrant industries. The Fish Market in Sydney was first established in 1945 and processes over 14,500 tonnes of seafood every year. While you might not be in the market for quite that much, the market also has dozens of different restaurants and cafes serving up the catch of the day. My favourite are the Oyster tasting flights where you can sample all different kinds of these molluscs until you find your absolute favourite!

Sample Dozens of Dumplings at Din Tai Fung

Din Tai Fung originally opened up in Taipei, Taiwan and now their flagship location seats hundreds of people a day. Their proximity to Australia meant that once they began to expand internationally, Australia was one of their first locations outside Taipei. Now, there are three different locations just in Sydney, so clearly, the Aussie’s are a fan. Their long heralded xiao long bao, a soup dumpling filled with pork, is their keystone menu items and believe you me, you’ll need more than one order. No matter which location you try, there is usually a line but the smallish menu, and quick on their feet staff, means you’ll never have to wait longer than needed.

NOMAD

Lots of people come up to me and ask what they should eat while they’re in Australia, and sometimes it’s hard to answer this question. Although there are a handful of things which are notoriously Australian it’s true that there are not as many iconic “meals” as you might find when travelling to Asia or even Europe. But what I DO tell them is it’s the ingredients which make all the difference in Australia. Australian lamb, their locally grown vegetables, wine pairings and fresh seafood all contribute to some of the best meals in the world, albeit not perhaps the most “foreign” food despite being halfway around the world. Nomad is one of the best examples of this with their seasonal menus using only local Australian ingredients to create some absolutely incredible dishes.

Mecca Espresso

While I knew that beer was the national beverage of Australia, I had no idea that Australia had such a HUGE coffee culture. Even when I lived in student residence my housemates would make themselves frothed milk every morning for their coffee. Mecca Espresso is located right in the centre of the city, along historic King Street, but has a laid-back and cheerful atmosphere. I would love nothing more than to order a large cappuccino and sit on the patio to people watch all day long.

Good Time Artisan Ice Cream

In the heat of Australia’s summer or even just a hot winter day, there is nothing better than a good ice cream cone. And when I say ‘good’, I mean ‘good times‘. Good Time Ice Cream is a next step up from regular ice cream. They offer decadent toppings and put a modern twist on traditional soft serve. My favourite offering is the “Ziggy Stardust” which is smoked vanilla bean ice cream topped with blackberry crispies, pop rocks, strawberry powder and gold dust stars. Fabulously instagrammable.

History

The building was constructed in 1897 by Samu Pecz and funded by the then-mayor of Budapest, Károly Kamermayer, who wanted to give his city a first-class marketplace like the ones he’d visited in Paris and London.

One of the most distinguishing features of the exterior is its neoclassical facade and brightly coloured roof. The tile on the roof is Zsolnay tiles from Pécs, Budapest. These tiles were iconic due to their brilliant radiance. You can still spot the marketplace’s roof from across the Budapest skyline.

Location

The market is located next to the Danube river. When it first opened, ships could sail right into the harbour, next to the market, to unload their good. The building which once housed the customs office is now the home to Corvinus University. 

Entrance

When entering the Great Market, take a moment to study the elaborate neo-gothic gates adorn the entryway. Let your eyes turn upwards and gaze at the different designs created with the various hues of red bricks. The large triptych window allows light to pour in through the front of the entrance and makes everything shine!

Practical Info

The market is closed on Sunday, opens at 6am on other days, and closes at 5pm Monday, 6pm Tue-Fri and 3pm Saturday. You’ll notice how enormous it is! There are over 10,000 square meters of space inside the building. Remember to bring cash (Hungarian forints) to pay for all your purchases since most sellers don’t accept anything other than cash. If you have to use the washroom while in the market, there is a bathroom on the top floor, but it is a pay toilet so have some change ready.

The hall is covered in steel and glass, so farmers and artisans can sell their goods any day of the year without worrying about the weather. The intricate, wrought iron ribbing creates an artistic design against the bright orange rooftop. In the early days of the market, huge wagons carrying goods ran down the center aisle. The center aisle is much wider than the rest to make room for these enormous carts. It makes for a comfortable pedestrian walking path.

The entire structure was destroyed during WWII, and restoration took a long time. Delays were inevitable, but the constant problems they ran into meant that the restored market wasn’t finished until 1990. But great works take a long time, resulting in a stunning and faithful reconstruction of the original building’s architecture and ornamentation.

1st Floor

There are three floors which make up the marketplace. The first floor is the most interesting and contains the bulk of the content brought to the market daily. You’ll see seasonal produce, fresh meat, pastries, olives, exotic spices, and, most importantly – Hungarian specialties.

Paprika

Hungarian paprika is sold throughout the market. You can find it in the most lovely packages with intricate embroidery or inside retro-looking tin cans. Paprika is considered the national spice of Hungary, so it’s not just a souvenir but a mainstay of Hungarian cuisine. Hungarian paprika is made from toasted peppers and blended into a fine consistency. Some are hotter mixes than others, but most of them have a little bit of heat. Hungarian paprika is also slightly on the sweet side and very dark red. Looks for the words “edes” or “erdos.” Edes means sweet, and erdos means hot. You can also buy paprika as a paste in tubes.

Hungarian Salami

Another Hungarian staple hanging throughout the market is Hungarian salamis and sausages. Hungarian salami is sought after all over the world. The cured meat contains spices like garlic, peppers, caraway seeds and, of course, paprika. These cured sausages are ideal for picnics; just remember to bring or buy a knife to slice it over cheese, crackers or bread.

Pastries

A sweet treat found throughout the market is Rétes. Rétes are a strudel-like pastry log filled with fresh fruits such as apple, cherry, or poppy seed and topped with powdered sugar. We sampled the assorted berry variety, and it was delicious! 

If you’re looking for something a little more savoury, try the Sajtos Pogácsa or Cheese Scones. These are some with cheese or toppings like mushrooms and sausage for added flavour.

Mushrooms

Another item, favourited by the locals, is fresh and dried mushrooms found at the north end of the hall. These mushrooms are from worldwide, and you rarely find such a great selection.

2nd Floor

Upstairs, overlooking the market below, are various eateries and souvenir stalls. Many souvenirs here are Chinese-made knockoffs, so check the labels before you buy, but there are some gems in there. The embroidered items are the best thing to look for, as many of these are handmade and beautiful keepsakes of Budapest.

The food stalls on the second floor are unpretentious, cheap and tasty. Many stalls have been serving residents for years, so if you want to eat like a local, this is the place to go! You can find black pudding, fried sausages, stuffed cabbage, lángos (deep-fried dough with garlic, sour cream and cheese), and sweet pancakes. Give “Kolbice” a try – a whole wheat bread cone filled with mini sausages, cheddar cheese sauce and fresh sauerkraut.

If you feel like a drink, hop into the borozós (cheap bars), where you can have a glass of inexpensive Hungarian wine, beer or the popular, Unicum (a Hungarian herbal liqueur).

Basement

The basement is where you’ll find the “stinkier” items. Fishmongers, butchers, barrels, and pickles cover the basement, and you can certainly smell it as you descend. Hungarian pickles are incredible. There are so widely different varieties; they don’t seem to stop just at cucumbers and onions. They’ve even perfected a paprika-stuffed pickled cabbage!

If you’re on a budget, the Great Market is the best place to get authentic Hungarian food, quick and cheap. It’s also a reliable place to collect ingredients for the perfect picnic. Head out to the Danube to watch boats cruise up and down the river as you enjoy your tasty treasures.

The market is not only an architectural masterpiece but also a cultural hub where you can find a wide variety of local products, from fresh produce and traditional Hungarian delicacies to handmade crafts and souvenirs. It’s a great place to get a taste of the local culture, history, and cuisine. While it might be true that Japan is more expensive than Thailand or Vietnam, there are plenty of low-cost options you can find with a little bit of research and some exploration to boot.

#1. Street Food

Street food is one of Asia’s best-kept not-so-secret-secrets. There are hundreds of different kinds of street foods available in Japan. A simple internet search for it will reveal hundreds of results. The best thing to keep in mind when sampling street foods is to be adventurous! Dishes won’t always look or taste familiar, but I’ve almost never tried something I didn’t completely fall in love with! And the few times I didn’t like something, they never cost more than a few dollars. 

Taiyaki

Taiyaki is one of the cutest and most delicious treats to eat in Japan. The fish-shaped sweet pancake dessert is filled with all different flavours. Depending on where you are in Japan they will often have unique special fillings only available in that prefecture. The most common option is fresh red bean, but my favourite is the custard and matcha. These usually cost about $1.50 and at that price you can afford to try them all!

Takoyaki

Not to be confused with Taiyaki, Takoyaki is a fried ball of batter filled with octopus tempura, covered in green onions, pickled ginger and shaved fish flakes (which look like they’re alive as the shiver and shake atop the hot batter). These are most popular in Osaka but can be found all over Japan. Cover them with a sweet and savoury sauce for added flavour and devour before they get cold. A tray will only run you about $5, and they are surprisingly filling.

Yakisoba

If you might think a tasty noodle dish wouldn’t be something you can get on the street, you have never tried Yakisoba. These wheat noodles are fried on a large griddle and come with stir-fried pork, vegetables and served with a tangy sauce. They can be topped with various toppings like mayo, fish flakes, and pickled ginger served beside the vendor much like a hot dog vendor would serve his condiments. An entire tray will only cost $5 and is more than enough for two people to share.

Rice Cakes

Rice cakes are a quick and delicious snack served all over Japan. They are crispy and come in an assortment of flavours. You can often buy them hot off the grill and make for the perfect thing to eat while you meander. You can usually get 2-3 for under $2. 

Curry Bread

Curry Bread is one of the most delicious grab-and-go treats. It is deep fried bread, covered in additional breadcrumbs filled with curried meats. Hot, spicy and saucy, this pastry costs $1-$2 and will warm you up on a cold day.

Manju

Manju is another sweet treat you can sample almost anywhere you find street vendors. They are small, round steamed cakes filled with a variety of flavours. In Asakusa, you can sample Agemanju which are additionally coated in tempura batter and deep-fried. They will often have seasonal fillings like Sakura, plum and even pumpkin.

#2. Japanese Convenience Stores or Konbini 

While this might shock and surprise you to hear, but no word of a lie, convenience stores or Konbini as they are lovingly called in Japan, are a veritable mecca of tasty traditional Japanese foods. If you’re looking to stock up on food to eat back at your hotel while enjoying some Japanese TV (which I highly recommend), then this is the place to go. It’s also a great place to buy ingredients for your Hanami (a picnic Japanese people have during cherry blossom season to enjoy the blooming flowers).

Onigiri

The first thing you need to consider when shopping at a Japanese convenience store is their wide selection of Onigiri. Onigiri are perfectly triangular rice balls wrapped in seaweed and filled with different varieties of fish and sometimes fruit. These only cost $2 and are very filling!

Bento Box

At 7-Eleven a Bento box will cost you easily under $10 (usually under $5) and will be just as delicious as any bento you’ve ever eaten at a restaurant. Perfectly organized into neat little sections, you can get rice, pickled veggies, tempura, salmon and even a dessert all in one adorable box. If you ask for it to be heated up just say “Atsui bentō”. It tastes even better that way and is the way to go!

Fried Chicken

Lawson’s is one of the most popular convenience stores in Japan and is known for their fried chicken. While the idea of eating chicken from a convenience store in North America might send a chill down your spine – in Japan, it is a delicacy. They have different cuts on offer; honetsuki (fried bone-in chicken), honenashi (fried boneless chicken), and different flavours of kara-age (deep-fried chicken nuggets).

Drinks | Coffee, Tea, Juice and More!

Lastly, make sure you grab a few beverages to keep you hydrated throughout the day. Konbinis serve up literally hundreds of different drinks. Be sure to try Pocari Sweat, a non-carbonated sweet beverage which is advertised as an “ion supply drink” – the ideal thing to keep you going all day long. Also be sure to try a variety of the different bottled teas. You can get them iced or even hot, in the heated cabinets at the front of the store. If you are feeling like something a little harder there are dozens of different sakes to try at super low prices. 

#3. Markets

Local vendors in markets all over Japan are selling some of the greatest foods you can sample in the entire country. While it might take getting up early and making your way through fish laden alleys, you are bound to discover some real gems. Outside of the hustle and bustle of Tsukiji fish market are dozens of vendors selling cookware, ceramics and, you guessed it, food! Omelette rolls are served up on a sticks. They are a fluffy and sweet snack to grab the go. These usually cost around $2 but the fancier ones can go up to $5. I couldn’t tell the difference, so opt for the cheaper ones.

Fresh Fish

Another market food to try in Japan is unagi. Made from eel which is smoked over hot coals, the taste is smoky and sweet as it is covered in a special BBQ sauce. Unagi can be expensive but served up on skewers in the marketplace you can sample it for a low low price, usually $5-$7. 

Sea urchin is another high priced ingredient you can sample for a small price at the market. Sea urchin or uni is a creamy, salty delicacy which some people love, and some people hate. You can find freshly opened uni all over the marketplace which costs about $5 a pop.

Lots of market also sell fresh sushi trays. Like you might have back home at the supermarket. But these are going to be SUPER fresh and all sourced from local fisheries. Often if you buy the sushi from the market, they have small eating areas nearby. So even though you are paying supermarket prices you get to eat at a table!

Mochi

Mochi is Japanese rice cake made from pounding down glutinous rice, a ritual you can often see being done in the markets every day. Once the mochi is at a dough like consistency, it is shaped into balls or squares and served fresh to the shoppers. They will often be paired with seasonal ingredients like strawberries and red bean, my personal favourite. The treats only cost around $2 and are surprisingly filling.

#4. Yakitori

Izakayas are found all over Japan, from big cities to the countryside, all of which serve up fresh Yakitori! Yakitori are bit size skewers of meat (traditionally chicken), fish or veggies. You will see things on the menu like skin, liver and innards. Each skewer is cooked over charcoals and then covered in a salt or soy sauce. You can order as many different skewers as you want and typically these restaurants are a great place to save money. Each skewer will only cost about $2 so you can order lots of different options. Don’t scare away from the weirder meats, often they are prepared very well and are surprisingly delicious. They pair perfectly with a cold beer at the end of the day.

What to Order at a Yakitori

Since Yakitoris are often very small shops they will often not have English menus but here are some items to look for on the menu. Negima (ねぎま) are pieces of chicken thigh with leeks, a great combo of greasy and crispy food. Tebasaki (手羽先) are chicken wings. Torikawa (とりかわ) is chicken skin, and although it might sound strange, it’s crispy and incredible. Tsukune (つくね) are meatballs made with chicken, egg, vegetables and spices. Reba (レバー) are chicken livers and are my favourite choice!

#5. Vending Machine Ramen Restaurants

Ramen can be found all over Japan, in many different establishments, but the most popular for those looking to save a few bucks are the “button” restaurants. At these restaurants, you need only walk up to a machine and press a button to receive your ramen. All the buttons are often accompanied by pictures and prices which help non-Japanese speakers. Put your money into the slot and click the option you’d like. Once armed with your ticket, give it to the chef inside and within minutes you’ll be served up a piping hot bowl of ramen. These bowls are often only $5-$10 depending on your toppings and definitely the best meals I ate in Japan.

Ramen flavours vary from region to region, and it is best to sample the local speciality. Shio or Salt Ramen is from Hokkaido and has a lighter flavour since the broth is made from chicken bones. Miso ramen is often served with corn, butter and veggies. Tonkotsu or Pork Broth Ramen is made from, you guessed it, pork bones! It’s a thick brother and a heavier meal, so it is served with a thinner type of noodle.

#6. Gyoza

Gyoza or Japanese pork dumplings are a cheap and quick food you can get almost anywhere in Japan. Some shops are entirely dedicated to them and serve nothing else but. 6 pieces of Gyoza will often run you about $2-$3. You can get them steamed or fried, and they are filled with minced pork, shredded cabbage, and shiitake mushrooms. 

Most dumpling restaurants offer either their own mixture of dipping sauce or a variety of condiments for you to make your own. These include soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, chilli oil, and garlic. Mix them up altogether to your liking. I like mine super spicy, so I amp up the chilli oil!

#7. Soft Serve Ice Cream

If you’re looking for a delicious dessert in the summertime to help cool you down head to tow you have to swing by one of the many soft serve ice cream shops. This is a cheap option that comes in a myriad of flavours like sesame, taro root, matcha and even Ramune (a lime soda flavour). While these will only cost a few dollars their bright and colourful appearance is sure to impress all your Instagram followers. The Japanese soft serve is extra creamy, super smooth and jam-packed with flavour!

#8. Conveyor Belt Sushi

Sushi might as well be the national food of Japan. You can get sushi for as little as a few dollars a piece or as much as a hundred. Some of the most impressive chefs in the world have come to Japan to serve this traditional dish, but even the simplest hole in the wall still has access to the freshest seafood in the country. Conveyor belt sushi restaurants are an inexpensive option for anyone wanting to save a few bucks and try a myriad of options.

Once seated in front of the rotating belt, you can watch all sorts of sushi pass by, each on a separate plate which correlates to a different price point. Some are as little as $1 for two pieces and the most expensive I’d see is $5 for the highest grade of tuna. Getting to see the food before you order it is an excellent opportunity to try different varieties you might not have sampled otherwise. 

Salmon nigiri with onions and mayo might seem odd, but the combination is surprisingly delicious. Tender tuna maki comes in all different cuts for you to sample. One of the best things about these restaurants is the free green tea on every table. Just add some matcha powder into your cup and use the spout at your seat which provides hot water on command. It’s the perfect addition to any meal. There are hundreds of different places to try but some chain which are pretty reliable are Genki Sushi and Sushi Ro.

#9. Depachika

Depachika is the name for the basement floors of department stores in Japan where you’ll find world-class eateries. Unlike shopping mall food courts in North America, these food emporiums serve up restaurant quality food at food court prices. It’s almost like a culinary theme park. You can find bento, dim sum, dessert parlors and more. The more high end the department store, the higher price of the food within. So if you’re looking for a bargain, check out Shinjuku Isetan or Shibuya Takashimaya. Some of these even have a rooftop picnic area to chow down on your orders in a stunning environment at the cost of FREE.

#10. Japanese Fast Food

Finally, just like the rest of the world, Japan has some cheap fast food. But there are some unique Japanese chains which are only available to this country and offer up some incredible meals. CoCo Curry House Ichibanya is one of my favourites. Japanese curry is unlike Thai or Indian curry. It is slightly sweet and very very spicy. My favourite combination is rice with the pork curry served with a pork katsu, enoki mushrooms, garlic and cheese. This dish will cost about $10 but is a super filling dinner option, and their adorable restaurants always have manga on hand for you to read while you eat, adding to the experience.

Japanese Fast Food Restaurant Chains

MOS Burger is a burger chain serving; rice burger buns, toppings such as hot meat sauce, teriyaki burgers with mayo and burgers with Gouda cheese and butter sauce. The burger usually cost between $5-$6.

Matsuya serves cheap Japanese breakfasts if you’re looking for something traditional to eat in the morning. These cost between $4-$6 and are a great way to fill up for a long day ahead.

Wendy’s acquired the brand “First Kitchen” a few years ago, and although it might be associated with Wendys, their menus are entirely different from their North American cousins. Their lemon chicken umami burger with shredded lettuce piled high is a favourite, for only $4. Be sure to sample their fries with a variety of toppings like Burnt Double Butter Soy Sauce, Truffle, Butter Chicken and Chicken Consomme. Served alongside a Blueberry Yogurt Float, the combo of hot and cold is perfection!

#11 Ekiben

Ekibens, or bento boxes sold at train stations, are a great way to eat cheaply in Japan. Not only are they convenient for travellers on the go, but they also offer a variety of options at affordable prices. These bento boxes are often made with fresh and locally sourced ingredients, allowing you to try authentic Japanese cuisine at a fraction of the cost of eating at a restaurant. Additionally, Ekibens often include a balanced meal of rice, protein, and vegetables, making them a healthy and filling option for budget-conscious travellers.

Japan offers a plethora of delicious and budget-friendly food options that are sure to satisfy any traveler’s palate. From street food to bento boxes, there are plenty of ways to taste the country’s diverse cuisine without breaking the bank. By taking advantage of local markets, trying out standing bars and food stalls, and opting for bento boxes, you can enjoy a tasty and cost-effective trip in Japan. Remember to be adventurous with your food choices and don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.

]]> During our first visit to Barcelona, we stayed in the up and coming, trendy neighbourhood of ‘El Poble-sec’. We picked a colourful and quirky Airbnb for our lodgings. We hoofed our way up the six floors, barely managing our clunky bags up the narrow 19th-century staircase.

Once we walked through the door, we were mesmerised by all the colourful fabrics, richly decorated walls and beautiful furnishings that Anna, our host, had all over her apartment. She introduced herself, showed us around and gave us a great recommendation for a place to grab some tapas, right down the street. We headed back out promptly, not wanting to get in their way while they cleaned the place up for our “official” arrival later on in the afternoon. We headed down the street, or “Carrer” as they say in Catalan, in search of some fresh Tapas.

We peeked nervously into the door of the restaurant called “Koska” that Anna had directed us towards. A very friendly waiter smiled and ushered us happily in the door Although there were no tables outside, where we would have preferred to sit, he said that we could sit inside, and if anything opened up, he could move us out there. We agreed and took a table at the back. He brought us a menu but said we could also look at all the Pinchos there were on the counter as well. We asked if they had any “Tortilla”, another recommendation from our host, and he smiled and went over to grab a slice. A Spanish tortilla is an omelette type dish consisting eggs and potato, fried in oil. It’s like a slice of scalloped potatoes, cooked low and slow for hours and then sliced into almost pie like pieces.

Pinchos literally means “thorn” or “spike”. It’s a small snack, typically found in Northern Spain. This was one of our favourite things to find all over Barcelona. You could try so many different things since they were so small, and if everyone wanted something different, it was easy to oblige everyone. Dad and I perused the pinchos and finally settled on a few different things along with a dish of olives, naturally.

Eventually, we were able to grab a seat on the patio. The street wasn’t packed, but it was still interesting people watching as the locals went about their day. The street we were on was called “Carrer de Blai” and would prove to be one of the best places for food we found anywhere in the city.

After we had polished off our plate of pinchos and tortilla, we walked along Carrer de Blai towards the Metro Station. So many places were closed for the August holidays, but it still seemed like a bustling part of town. I looked the apartments up and down as we walked. I loved the architecture. It was beautiful and yet lived in. I hate Dollhouse cities. Where the structures are entirely restored and only left as museum-like facades. Cleaned daily and only there for the tourists to snap a cute picture. These apartments were just as beautiful as anywhere else, but there was a layer of grit that would keep them from being perhaps the most tourist friendly environment. But me, it was perfection. I hate when lovely things are left untouched, and therefore, unloved. This place felt loved. From head to toe.
