History

The name Quidi Vidi is a real mystery. Even locals can’t agree on where the name comes from. Some say it was named by the Portuguese, who called it “quey de video,” meaning, “what a beautiful sight.” Others claim it’s Latin, since…well it sounds like Latin. There is also a local legend that says it’s named after a hotel bar that once sat on the edge of the lake. The owner of said bar was named “Kitty Vitty” and they went about naming the whole area after her. Up until the 1900s, the area was even written as “Kitty Vitty” on local maps.

However you pronounce it (or spell it), everyone can agree that the history of Quidi Vidi revolves around fishing. In the 1600s, fishermen arrived every Spring to fish the rich sources of cod they found in the area. The fishermen liked to set up small fishing huts on the harbour until the cold weather arrived. They found the harbour at Quidi Vidi to be very inhabitable as its inlet enabled it to be sheltered from the harsh winds. Soon, men began to stay behind to face the cold winter. By staying behind there were able to set up in advance for the fishermen who would arrive come the Spring. These “overwinterers” were some of the first to build homes in the area. Many of these immigrants were from southeast Ireland. But instead of returning home in the spring, they remained forever. Calling Quidi Vidi their new home.

Quidi Vidi Battery

In 1762 the French built the Quidi Vidi Battery. The French were constantly at war with the English, and vice versa. They were in a heated battle over control of the rich fishing waters around Newfoundland. When the French finally departed once and for all, the Batteries all became occupied by the local Newfoundland army. Although it was once a National Historical Museum, the Battery closed in 2011.

Accomodation

Christ Church Airbnb

If you can book your stay months and months in advance, there is no better place to stay than at the old Christ Church. The old building has been restored and converted into a stylish Airbnb! The original church was built in 1834. It was designated as a combined church for the Anglicans, Methodists, and Congregationalists who lived in Quidi Vidi. It’s such a wonderful example of the ecclesiastical architecture of the time. The white siding is framed with bright red and green highlights. The stunning bell tower was added in 1890.

The building was sold to the Newfoundland Historic Trust in 1966. Over the years, it served as the town hall, antique store, furniture restorer, and theatrical rehearsal space. It was even used in the first feature film (with sound) made in Canada, called The Viking. It was recently purchased by Aiden and Elizabeth Duff who lovingly renovated to be a magical two-bedroom Airbnb. Is there anything better than staying inside a piece of Newfoundland history? I think not!

What to Do

Exploring the Village

Honestly, my favourite part of visiting Quidi Vidi was simply wandering the harbour and hillsides. Soaking in the atmosphere and brightly coloured houses along the harbour is a journey of discovery. Houses on stilts popping out of the water surprise you around the water’s edge. Colourful fishing huts can be spotted a mile away. And old fishing equipment is strewn about like sprinkles on a cake, haphazard but seemingly a method to the madness

Still to this day, the people in the area make their living on the water fishing for cod. Almost any time of day as you explore the village you’ll see fishermen cleaning their lines, bringing in the catch of the day or repairing their boats for the winter.

Hiking

One of the best ways to get in touch with nature around the village is to go on a hike. The nearby Cuckold’s Cove and Signal Hill Loop is a great introductory trail. It spans 6.9 kilometres and loops up into the hillside and around the Quidi Vidi Lake. It will take about 2-3 hours, depending on your fitness level or how often you stop to take scenic pictures! During the late summer and early fall, there are many berries to be picked along the trail. And in the springtime, it’s a great place to collect wildflowers.

Quidi Vidi Charters

Since Quidi Vidi’s history is steeped in the fishing industry, there is no better way to get acquainted with the waters than on a boat. Where you can try your hand at fishing for yourself! Quidi Vidi Charters takes small groups of people out on the water to teach them the time-old traditions of cod fishing. While out there you’ll also hear charming historical stories and local legends. They run tours from January to September when cod is in season. The tours last about three hours and cost $150 per person. Keep your eyes peeled for whales and seabirds on your journey out on the Atlantic. After bringing in your catch of the day, the guide will even show you how to clean and gut a fish! Plus, you’ll be able to eat your catch right there on the wharf. Nothing could be fresher!

Quidi Vidi Village Plantation

The large yellow trimmed building facing the harbour is the Quidi Vidi Village Plantation. Inside is a collection of local artists who are hard at work on their craft. You can just wander around the halls, watching the amazing creations in progress. But you also can buy some of these awesome handmade creations directly from the artists. It’s a great way to see what local creators are being inspired by here in Newfoundland.

You’ll notice rocks covered in crochet blankets all over the town. They are so adorable to spot along your journey and all the knitting is done right here! As a means to bring visitors into the plantation.

Where to Eat

Mallard Cottage

One of the best ways to start or end your day is with a visit to Mallard Cottage. The historic green and white cottage was built in the 1840s by the Mallard family. They had immigrated from southeast Ireland to make a new life here in Newfoundland. The cottage’s style was typical of the period, inspired by Irish cottages, with low hipped-roof and a large central chimney.

The Mallard’s passed the house down from generation to generation, eventually selling it off in 1950. Because it was so well cared for, it remained in pristine historic condition. Today, it is one of the oldest wooden buildings that remain in North America. It changed hands multiple times over the years and in 2013 was purchased and restored to become a five-star restaurant. This is no doubt the finest restaurant in all of St. John’s, let alone Quidi Vidi.

About Mallard Cottage Restaurant

Walking into Mallard Cottage is what I imagine an old-fashioned inn from the middle ages would have felt like. Furs hang on the walls along with taxidermied moose and deer heads. Plus seems to grow out of the woodwork giving the room a breath of fresh air. The room is dim, lit throughout with candles and chandeliers. The kitchen is open to the room. Guests can sit at the bar to watch the chefs at work. The flames roar in the background, and the sound of excited chatted simmers in the air. Mallard Cottage is open Wednesday to Saturday for dinner, and an exclusive reservation is available for Sunday Brunch.

Their dinner menu consists of seasonal fare sourced in Newfoundland and Labrador. The menu changes along with the months, so there is always something fresh and delicious on the stove. The dinner menu features a Family Style option of $90 per person. It is a multi-course meal and includes one alcoholic drink.

The Family Style meal comprises a myriad of their favourite menu items. It is served “family style” on large platters brought to the table to share amongst your party. I would go with this option every time. We couldn’t decide what we wanted and figured this was the best way to sample a bit of everything. And it was A TON of food! Come hungry!

Their brunch menu is just as impressive! And the $45 prix-fix includes one main, two sides, a non-alcoholic drink and access to their breakfast cake table. You can grab whatever you want from their incredible dessert table, whatever can fit into your cake box!

The Wharf at Quidi Vidi

The old wharf in Quidi Vidi Harbour has been reinvented into an incredible, modern event space! The Wharf is a new pop-up event featuring food vendors, artists and locally brewed Landwash craft beers. It’s a Newfoundlander beer garden by the water. The company is a non-profit helping Stella’s Circle‘s Clean Start program. Since Quidi Vidi is such a small village without much parking, they even offer a free shuttle to help with congestion.

Sweet Spot

The Sweet Spot is one of the popular spots on the Wharf. They serve delicious ice cream, baked goods, and hot coffee right off the dock. Their elaborate sundaes are the real star of the show. Such a perfect cool treat for a hot day near the water.

Where to Drink

Quidi Vidi Brewery

In a huge green building dominating the harbour is the Quidi Vidi Brewery. This old fish plant was transformed into a local brewery in 1996 by David Fong. Over the years, he has created one of the most beloved breweries all over Newfoundland. They brew over 25 different kinds of beer, including the infamous blue-bottled Iceberg Beer. The Iceberg Beer is made with 20,000-year-old iceberg water, harvested from icebergs off the coast of Newfoundland. Walk into any restaurant, grocery store or liquor store in Newfoundland, and you’ll find their brightly coloured cans.

But if you are looking to sample a bunch of their different brews, then head over to their taproom. You can get a flight sampler made to your preferred taste. Their fantastic beer hall and outdoor patio is brimming with energy. Live music is usually on every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There is nothing better to pair your beer with than a gaunty tune played by some local Newfoundlanders.

Although there is no food on offer at the brewery, not to fear! If you’re looking for something to eat, you can head outside to the Quidi Vidi Fish Company truck. This is parked outside the brewery and acts as their defacto restaurant. There are a small set of tables outside where you can eat on the water.

The Inne of Olde

Tucked away on Old Quidi Vidi Road is one of the mainstays of village life, the pub. The Inne of Olde is better to know just as “Linda’s.” Linda is the owner and heart of the establishment. Walking in the door, you are immediately struck with the waves of personality that Linda has decorated the pub with. There are families photos all over the walls, trinkets, keepsakes and of course, seasonal decor. If you are looking to chat with a local, there is no better place than the Inne of Olde. You can find some real characters in here and the later the night gets the more stories they are prone to tell!

Quidi Vidi really makes for the perfect escape and feels like a village out of time, just minutes away from the centre of downtown St. John’s. Hopefully, this guide enlightened you into the incredible things to see and do here. You make a point of visiting on your next trip to the Maritimes.

]]> Newfoundland‘s rugged coastline is dotted with hundreds of lighthouses. The lighthouses of Newfoundland are a national treasure. From the iconic Ferryland Lighthouse to the dramatic Cape Spear, these lighthouses are among some of the most spectacular in the world. Lighthouse hikes are one of the best ways to experience them up close and personal. Hiking is one of the most popular activities in Newfoundland with locals and tourists alike. There are so many gorgeous trails to explore. Some routes have breathtaking views, while others offer a more serene experience.

On our more recent trip to Newfoundland, we made it a point to seek out as many lighthouses as we could find along the way! This guide will help you find the perfect hiking location to suit your needs! We’ve compiled a list of the ten best lighthouse hikes in Newfoundland. There are hikes to get you started no matter what your skill or fitness level. Trust me, I’d not been hiking in ages and even I managed to do them all! And it was worth every step of the journey to see these incredible lighthouses up-close and take in all the fantastic scenery.

History of the Lighthouse

The very first known lighthouse was built in Egypt 2,000 years ago! While it took a few more thousand years for lighthouses to arrive in Newfoundland, today they feel like an essential part of the province. From the dawn of life in Newfoundland, the people’s connection to the sea has been of utmost importance. In the 1800s, there was a rise of Europeans migrating to the shores of Newfoundland in the Spring and Summer for fishing opportunities. Their quiet coastlines soon became a cluster of sailing ships.

During foggy and stormy weather, shipwrecks were prevalent. With over 29,000 kilometres of coastline, there was a need for lighthouses to guide boats into shore. It wasn’t just the weather sailors needed to be warry of; the coastline was dotted with dangerous rocky outcrops, hidden inlets, icebergs and rough shores. The first lighthouse to be built in Newfoundland was at Fort Amherst in 1810 to help boats into St. John‘s harbour through the narrows. It was the first of what would go onto be 55 lighthouses erected in Newfoundland over the years.

How Lighthouses Work

Lighthouses implement the Fresnel lens to cast their beacons of light across miles of stormy waters. The Fresnel lens has been called “the invention that saved a million ships.” The lens is made up of a series of prisms mounted onto a large steel frame. Then lenses reflect the flame/light inside, created in Newfoundland by burning seal oil. The refractions create one intense beam of light that can be seen miles away.

Later on, Lighthouses were given huge foghorns to help communicate with ships in the water before modern communication was possible. The cries of the foghorn echoing across the coastline became the background music heard by hundreds of Newfoundlanders over the years.

The first lighthouses in Newfoundland were painted with red and white stripes. These colours were chosen to help mariners see the lighthouse against the sky, even when it was foggy and grey. But the lighthouses located in lush forests or behind rocky cliffsides were painted all white to ensure they can be spotted against this dark forest backdrop.

Lighthouse Keepers

The job of the lighthouse keeper was one of the most important ones and one of the most solitary. Many of these lighthouses were first located in very remote locations. When transport was in its infancy, lighthouse keepers would live on the property instead of in the nearby villages. Sometimes a house would be built adjacent to the lighthouse where the keeper could live with their family. Often the weather conditions near these lighthouses were severe. Resources like food and fuel were limited as they were brought in only during the summer months.

The job of the lighthouse keeper was to ensure the light was always light. Without the light, ships would be lost at sea. Once foghorns were installed they were required to wind up the horns to blow on extremely foggy days. They were also responsible for reporting icebergs in the area and sending out flares if they saw any boats in trouble. Famously, the lighthouse keeper at Cape Race was the first to receive the Titanic’s distress signals. It was 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland but alas, too far to make it in time to save those doomed passengers.

Best Lighthouses in Newfoundland and Labrador

Ferryland Lighthouse

The Ferryland Lighthouse is a quaint, historic spot along the Coast of Avalon with many stories to tell. One of the most beloved buildings in this small Newfoundland community, the Lighthouse has guided ships into shore since 1870. The grand, bright red Lighthouse looks out over the vast Atlantic Ocean. The sound of crashing waves against the rocks echoing across the hillsides. During certain times of the year, whales can even be spotted right off the coast.

Lighthouse Picnics

But what makes visiting this particular lighthouse so exciting is the Lighthouse Picnics. These incredible picnics are such unique experiences and so popular they even have been featured on Oprah’s Instagram! Picnics MUST be booked in advance as reservations are limited. Once you arrive at the Lighthouse, you will go to the main building to pick up your bespoke meal. You get to choose your favourite sandwich, dessert and drink and it also comes with a delicious salad! Then it’s up to your to find the perfect place nearby to enjoy it for yourself. There is genuinely nothing more perfect than a picnic by the sea. Especially when you don’t need to worry about packing or cooking anything yourself! We sat right in front of the amazing lighthouse to absorb all that majesty it provided.

The Ferryland Lighthouse Hike

The lighthouse is only accessible by hiking along a very flat pathway towards the edge of the coastline. The hike takes about 25-minutes to reach the peak of the Lighthouse. As you begin from the parking lot, take note of the small island to the North. Look closely, and you might spot a herd of sheep grazing on the grass. You might be thinking, “how on earth did those sheep get into that island?!” Local sheep farmers have been bringing their herds over the island for years, as it is free of predators. It is a wonderful place where the sheep can relax all summer. Just another little slice of magic that this hike provides. As you go, you’ll be able to listen to the seabirds flying overhead and keep an eye out for sea creatures bobbing up and down along the shore.

Twillingate Long Point Lighthouse

At the peak of Crow Head‘s in Twillingate, you’ll find the Long Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse sits over 300 feet above sea level, towering over the cliff below. The light flashing over the Atlantic Ocean and Notre Dame Bay. This is the perfect place to come to look for icebergs. Hundreds of icebergs float along this “alley” every year during the springtime. Whales also migrate along this part of the ocean! Twillingate is a great place to visit if you are an avid whale spotter.

The long point lighthouse was built in 1876. Unlike other lighthouses, it was built with a large double-story dwelling for the lighthouse keeper. Today the house is almost more imposing than the lighthouse. The house is used as the interpretive center for visitors. The lighthouse has a unique shape, the square base rises up into an octagonal design. The lower levels are painted red with a white lantern topper. This design resulted in the community nicknaming it, “the baby bottle.”

Nanny Hole and Longpoint Lighthouse Hike

You can descend downwards along the coastal trail from the Lighthouse parking lot. The trail leads you towards “Nanny’s Hole”. This hike and the surrounding views were the most reminiscent of Ireland to me. And seeing as so many of the first Newfoundlanders were Irish immigrants, one can really imagine why they felt at home here. The trail is 2.6 km long, so it’s an easy hike to do if you’re short on time but still want to experience the surrounding area.

Cape Bonavista Lighthouse

The lighthouse which stands on Cape Bonavista is my favourite lighthouse design. Something about those striking red and white stripes that pours down over the entire building makes it look like a giant peppermint candy. Caught in a sea of green grass. There’s something about lighthouses that draws people from near and far. Their presence radiates a sense of safety and solidarity, as though the light itself is a shield against disaster. And Cape Bonavista Lighthouse is no exception. It overlooks Bonavista Bay and offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Just across from the lighthouse is the iconic Puffin Colony. The little birds come to this safe harbour every year to roast and nest before their babies are born. The lighthouse itself was built in 1843. Back then, it was just a simple stone tower with a large glass lantern. The lamp was ignited by seal oil, and the lighthouse keeper’s job was to ensure it was always lit. He would purchase the seal oil from the fishermen in nearby villages to keep the lighthouse lantern burning. They were also charged with polishing the glass and recording weather and waves patterns. Today the stone tower has been encapsulated by a large surrounding building. Visitors can go inside the old tower to view the amazing lookout from above.

The lighthouse stands on the point where famous Italian navigator and explorer John Cabot first spotted land on his 1497 transatlantic voyage. When he saw the coastline ahead, he cried, “O Buona Vista!” which in Italian means “Oh happy sight!”

Cape Shore Trail

One of the best ways to see the lighthouse is to hike the Cape Shore Trail. This is a 9.2 km hike along the coastline and cliffside. It leads right to the lighthouse as the culminating point of the walk. This is such an incredible hike to see all different kinds of wildlife along the way. Although you can drive directly to the lighthouse, the hike is much more dramatic. The trail provides spectacular views of Bonavista Bay as you leisurely walk along the rugged coastline. Be sure to stop for a picnic along the trail or at the John Cabot Municipal Park.

Cape Spear Lighthouse

Cape Spear is a historic lighthouse located on the eastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula. Built in 1836, it was the second Lighthouse in Newfoundland and today is the oldest surviving Lighthouse. The colonist decided on this spot for their second Lighthouse. The area was located near the busy and rocky coast which stood near the entrance to St. John’s harbour.

Cape Spear History

Cape Spear was initially named ‘Cabo da Esperança,‘ by the Portuguese. This meant, “cape of hope.” But it was renamed when the French occupied the region, and they translated it to “Cap d’Espoir”. But over the years, the English just called it “Cape Spear,” which was their pronunciation of the French naming convention. Personally, I love the name ‘ Cape Hope’ and that’s how I like to think of the Lighthouse. No doubt, sailors coming in off the seemingly endless Atlantic ocean would have been overcome with emotion upon finally seeing land for the first time. A symbol of hope after their long journey.

To reach the lighthouse, you first need to climb a large set of stairs. This makes the entire experience of reaching the lighthouse all the more dramatic. As it seems to grow in size as you get close and closer. From the top of the hillside, you can descend down the cliffside via a series of boardwalks and wooden stairs. Standing on the deck facing the ocean, you are perched on the Easternmost point in North America. Looking out from here, you can spot Quidi Vidi Lake as well as St. John’s Harbour to the south. Plus an unobstructed view of Notre Dame Bay to the west.

Although the lighthouse is now automated, the lightkeeper’s residence is still on site. It has been restored to how it looked in 1839 when it was first opened. It now serves as a museum and allows the public to enter. They can experience what life for the new colonists and lighthouse keepers would have been like in the early 19th century.

Cape Spear Hike

For hikers, you can start your hike from the Cape Spear Lighthouse along the eastern edge of the coast. This fantastic 8.7 km moderate hike offers scenic views of the Atlantic ocean. If you make it the entire way, you will end at the lookout over Madam Cove.

Fort Amherst Lighthouse

Located on the other side of Signal Hill is a small square, tapered, wooden tower overlooking the Narrows. The Narrows is the only passage from the Atlantic Ocean to St. John’s Harbour, Newfoundland, bordered north and south by steep rock walls. This Lighthouse is situated on old Fort Amherst and therefore goes by the name Fort Amherst Lighthouse. The first Newfoundland British defensive tower was built on this very spot. It was built to protect the land from the invading French armies. Years later, in 1813 after the British forces left North America, the old Battery was transformed into a lighthouse.

The design of the lighthouse went through many iterations over time, and the current one standing is from 1951. A lighthouse was desperately needed in St. John‘s. St. John’s was one of the busiest harbours in Newfoundland. Ships coming in from Europe to fish from the Cod-rich oceans came in droves in the Spring and Summer. But what makes St. John’s harbour so special is that it is a naturally sheltered and ice-free port. So ships could come and go as they please here throughout the year. Sailors coming home would be greeted by this friendly lighthouse on their return shore. Various generations of fishermen find comfort in this lighthouse and it’s a mainstay of the community. Standing at this point, you have a fantastic view of Signal Hill across the Narrows and of St. John’s harbour.

Deadman’s Bay Path

A wonderful hike that starts (or ends) at Fort Amherst is Deadman’s Bay Path. The hike is fairly difficult at 20km there and back. But you can easily just walk a portion of the trail starting from the entry point at Fort Amherst. The trail features beautiful wildflowers during the spring and summer and berry picking grounds in the later summer and fall. There is even a swimming hole on Southside Hill. There are several high elevations gains at the midpoint on the trail. If you’d prefer to avoid those, you can walk as far as the steep climbs and return. But if you choose to walk the entire path, it should take between 4-5 hours from Fort Amherst to Blackhead and back. If you can make it as far as Deadman’s Bay, you’ll be in for a real treat!

King Cove Lighthouse

In the early 1800s, a merchant from St. John’s, named James MacBraire, came to King’s Cove to fish the rich waters. During the winter, he would hire skilled sailors to hunt seals. These brought in lots of money for the merchant as their pelts were very valuable. King’s Cove soon became a hub for his large fishery. But by 1893, the community was vying for a lighthouse to help the influx of ships in the area. The sailors desperately needed help managing the breakers and shallow waters around the cove.

King’s Cove Lighthouse was erected in 1893. It was made of cast iron and shipped in from England in pieces. This prefabricated design is the last surviving example of these pre-fab lighthouses in Canada. Unlike some of the other lighthouses in this guide, the King’s Cove lighthouse is an example of a functional structure. No ornamentation or flashy structures, just a simple stand-alone tower. The lighthouse was built on the headland jutting into the bay.

King’s Cove Lighthouse Trail

The King’s Cove Lighthouse trail offers hikers two options. You can take the extremely easy 1.7 km inner loop, which takes you to the lighthouse and back. Or opt for the 3.5 km outer loop, which heads to the lighthouse and then inwards through the seaside meadows. The pathway is actually a former country road that connected the lighthouse to the community. The views along the incredible coastline with remarkable geological sequences make this site a wonderful place to visit.

Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse

On the western edge of Gros Morne National Park stands the Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse. It faces the great Gulf of St. Lawrence and was the guide for boats entering Boone Bay. The lighthouse was built in 1894 to help the sailors on the west side of Newfoundland find their way home.

One of the most interesting parts of a visit to Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse is visiting the lighthouse keeper’s house. It has been restored to look and feel like it has been plucked out of the 1900s. This gives visitors a glimpse at how lighthouse keepers and their families lived in these remote locations. While they were only paid a few hundred dollars a year, their hard work was responsible for keeping so many ships safe.

Another unique aspect of Lobster Cove Head is the signal flags they have on display. These flags started to be used in the 1890s to send messages between ships and the shore. The different flags each represented a specific message. A banner with a “U” would tell the incoming ships, “You are running into danger,” while a “W” meant “I require medical assistance.”

Lobster Cove Head Trail

Just next to the lighthouse, you’ll find the entrance to Lobster Cove Head trail. This is a 2.1 km trek which is perfect for any skill level. You will wander up and down the coastline into the tuckamore forests and towards the rocky beaches. When you reach the beach, be sure to take a peek into the tide pools. These tide pools contain a myriad of different sea creatures like anemones, fish, crabs and periwinkles.

Rose Blanche Lighthouse

The most unique lighthouse on the island is the Rose Blanche Lighthouse, located on the southwest corner of Newfoundland. The Rose Blanche Lighthouse was originally named “Roche Blanch,” which means white rock. The name was inspired by the white quartz that is found in this area of Newfoundland. The same white granite quarried in the nearby mines was used to construct the lighthouse itself. It was built in 1873 and unlike the sleek designs of the other lighthouse, the rocks give this one a rustic quality. I love how the rocks around the lighthouse blend in with the lighthouse itself. Making it look like the building simply grew out of the earth.

Rose Blanche Lighthouse Trail

A very short and sweet trail is located right at the back of Rose Blanche Lighthouse. The trail offers scenic views of the North Atlantic Ocean and the white rocks on the coast. You can wander through the picturesque community of Rose Blanche Harbour Le-Cou. Some parts of the trails are actually old roads. These roads were once used by the first mariners to sail these shores.

Point Amour Lighthouse

The name “Point Amour” literally means “Love Point.” But shockingly, it was originally named “Pointe-aux-Morts,” or “dead man’s point.” Separating Labrador from Newfoundland is the great Strait of Belle Isle. This deadly waterway is known for rough seas and thick fog. The weather resulting in all these deadly shipwrecks over the years. The famous HMS Raleigh was wrecked just a mile offshore. Eleven crewmen died trying to swim to shore, but they couldn’t see the limestone cliffs in such rough conditions.

Four lighthouses were built along the coast to prevent such deadly accidents. This ensured that large steamships could travel safely between Europe and Newfoundland. The name of the area was changed in the hopes to rebrand the area and communicate the new safety standards put in place by the lighthouses. Of the four lighthouses, Point Amour Lighthouse is the tallest in Atlantic Canada. Reaching 109 feet (33 meters) built in 1858.

When the lighthouses were built, they were called, “Imperial Towers”. Their designs were based on lighthouses in the British Isles. The towers were made of bricks but covered in clapboard to protect against the rough weather. Today you can visit the interior of the lighthouse as the entire building complex is a museum. You can walk the 132 steps to the top of the tower. From here you have a panoramic view of the sea and land surrounding it.

Raleigh Trail

Raleigh Trail is an easy 1.8 km pathway that runs around the lighthouse. It allows visitors to get close to the beautiful wildflowers and coastline surrounding the area. Walking along the trail, you’ll also pass the site of the washed-up wreckage from the HMS Raleigh and several other ships. The ship parts littering the shore like an iron graveyard.

Fox Point Lighthouse

Fox Point Lighthouse can be found outside the small town of St. Anthony. Originally the land was used by French fishermen from Brittany. It was “officially” French explorer Jacques Cartier who “discovered” St. Anthony Harbour. But we all know it was occupied by locals long before then. French fishermen would come here for the season and then leave come winter. But eventually, they were pushed out and banned from fishing in favour of the local Newfoundlanders.

In 1850, Dr. Wilfred T. Grenfell arrived and built the St. Anthony Hospital, which grew the community substantially. St. Anthony Harbour was deemed the perfect place to build the first lighthouse in the area in 1906. The first lighthouse was an iron tower with a large lens lantern atop. It was painted with a framework of red and white vertical stripes. Over the years, the design of the lighthouse was altered. Today we can see the 1936 iteration which features a flat-roofed wooden building. But they continued the tradition of painting the sides red and white.

The building beside the lighthouse, which was originally the lighthouse keeper’s residence, has been turned into an amazing Seafood Restaurant. It opened in 1993 and has been serving tourists and locals ever since. Nothing is better on a cold day than the lighthouse keepers’ seafood chowder!

Fishing Point Park Trails

Fishing Point Park Trails is a wonderful hike, which takes you up, up and away. The 3.7 km loop offers scenic views from the top of St. Anthony’s and is good for all skill levels. There is a large set of stairs to climb at the midpoint on the trail, but just take your time, and the view from the top will be worth the effort! The entire town of St. Anthony’s is spread out around you with the lighthouse you just visited dead center!

]]> Everyone talks about Lake Louise when they mention a trip to Banff, but I think (and hear me out here) that Moraine Lake is by far the more superior Lake in the Rockies. Moraine Lake is also a glacially-fed lake (giving it that stunning turquoise colour like Lake Louise) that is nestled in the heart of Banff National Park. I found Moraine Lake far more interesting than Lake Louise. There were more photographic opportunities around every corner.

Moraine Lake is also slightly less packed with tourists, which made it all the more peaceful. Lake Louise can often feel like Disneyland. I found that Lake Louise is a destination, while Moraine Lake is an adventure. One of the reasons that Moraine Lake was less frequented by visitors in the past years was because it was so difficult to access. But thanks to the Park and Ride Shuttle the lakes are now more accessible than ever! 

Moraine Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in Canada. With its deep blue water and lush green scenery, it really is a sight to see. Towering mountains and a pristine blue sky almost always surround the lake. The backdrop is so magnificent it’s been dubbed “one of the most beautiful places on earth.” If you’ve been planning a trip to Banff for a while, definitely consider adding Moraine Lake to the top of your list! And honestly, if you are short on time and had to choose between Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, I’d put my votes on Moraine Lake! Here are some great tips on how to make the most of your visit to this spectacular location.

When to Visit?

Being located in the mountains means that Moraine Lake is much much colder than in the city just a few hours away. Even in the summer, you might find snow in the forest. Summer and early fall make for the best times of year to visit. Try to avoid weekends and holidays as this is the busiest time to visit with lots of locals flocking to the mountains for a day of hiking. Try to avoid at Moriane Lake early in the morning. This gives you the best chance of having the lowest crowd levels and also will allow you to see all there is to do around the Lake itself.

In the fall, you will also be greeted by the Golden Larch. The Larch is a needle-laden tree whose leaves turn the most beautiful yellow hue in the early fall. The nearby Larch Valley is the best place to see these changing colours. Late fall is my favourite time to visit as the crowds are much lighter. Plus, the incredible fall colours add another element of dynamism to the area. It is a lot chillier than in the summer but just dress in layers to survive those frigid mornings. Although the winter is the quietest season in Lake Moraine, the lake generally freezes over, so you won’t be able to appreciate the gorgeous turquoise colours of the water.

How to Get to Moraine Lake

As mentioned before, Banff and Lake Moraine is an easy day trip from Calgary, and there are many different ways to get there. While many people think renting a car is the only option, Banff is much more accessible than you might think via public transport!

By Car

To get to Calgary by car, you’ll need to rent one from the airport or any car rental locations downtown. Car rentals in Calgary for a simple, mid-size vehicle can be found as low as $60/day. The prices go up in the summer months, so I would plan on about $100/day if travelling in high-season. If you are travelling in the summer or during busy holidays, book your rentals months in advance. You might be surprised to find car rentals book up relatively quickly as a drive into the mountains is such a popular activity. If you can’t find any rentals downtown, consider looking at the airport since they usually have more rental availability there.

By Bus

What really surprised me was that you can actually take the bus from Calgary, directly to Banff and Canmore! On-It Regional Transit offers weekend-only service to and from Calgary. You can book a spot on their Saturday service 6:40 am bus which arrives in Banff around 9:15 am. Return buses to Calgary run about every hour after 5 pm. This means you can easily spend a whole day in Banff without a car!

If you’re looking to stay in Banff overnight or for the entire weekend, you can book one of their Friday Night tickets. They will get you into Banff at 8:30pm and you can stay the entire weekend, returning Sunday afternoon. There is only one bus on Friday Night so book those tickets in advance. Sunday buses run six times a-day. Each one-way tickets only cost $10! Super affordable, and great for any budget. Be sure to book your spots in advance as there are only so many buses available.

Shuttle Bus

If you are driving, please please consider taking the Park and Ride Shuttle Bus. This shuttle bus runs to and from Lake Louise and Moraine Lake! Parking at Moraine Lake is extremely limited! The parking lot is full by sunrise (!) and remains full throughout the day. Unless you’re willing to get to the parking lot at 6 am this is a real shot in the dark and could easily ruin your trip! And don’t think if the parking lot is packed, you can just park down the road. No, park rangers patrol the area and pretty much anywhere you could think of parking is restricted. But not to fear! This is where the Parks Canada Shuttle Bus comes in hand.

You must book your tickets in advance as only a certain number of tickets are sold every day. Walk-up seat sales are not permitted. Tickets are only $8 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for youths (6 – 17 years), and children under 6 are free! You need to book your ticket in advance and select your specific departure time. This is to ensure no one timeslot is overcrowded. This requires a little bit of extra scheduling but is worth the effort.

Park and Ride → Lake Louise → Moraine Lake → Park and Ride

This shuttle bus runs from the Park and Ride lot to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. The Park and Ride area is located just off the Trans-Canada Highway as marked on the map. But there are plenty of signs to direct you on your way. Once you arrive you check-in at the desk to get your ticket and wait for your designated bus. Buses depart every 15-20 minutes. From the Park and Ride, you can go directly to Moraine Lake. In less than 20 minutes, you’ll arrive at the entrance to the park with NO STRESS. No worrying about finding parking spots or the need to arrive at 4 am.

I honestly cannot recommend this service enough. Not only does the shuttle bus take you from the parking lot to either Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, you can also take the shuttles between the two lakes. As many times as you want. This guided itinerary to 24-hours in Banff is created around using the public transport system and the shuttle bus as it is truly the BEST WAY to explore the area with ease. The buses run about every 15 minutes, so you never have to wait very long in between shuttles to get where you want to go.

Roam

But how do I get around once I arrive if I take the On-It bus? Well, lucky for you, your On-It tickets allow you to travel for FREE on local Roam Regional services! Roam is the local transit system around the Bow Valley. Even if you don’t have an On-It ticket but want to ditch your car for the day you can get a 1-Day pass for the Roam local transit system. Tickets cost only $5 for adults and $2.50 for students and seniors. Kids under 13 are free! 

For a 1-Day ticket onto their expanded network, including buses to Moraine Lake, tickets cost $15 for adults and $7.50 for seniors and students.

Park Pass

Entry into the entirety of Banff National Park and Moraine Lake requires a valid Park Pass. The cost of the pass is necessary for maintaining the national park. A single adult pass costs $9.80 CAD, and children (6- 17) and seniors are $8.30 CAD. You can purchase a family pass for $19.60 CAD which covers your entire vehicle’s party.

You can purchase your Park Pass at the gate when you enter the park’s boundaries. But better yet, purchase it online before your arrival. Buying the pass in advance means you can simply print it off and then drive right into the park. That saves a bunch of time when there is a lineup to buy passes at the gate. Be sure to keep your pass on the dashboard of your vehicle, where it is clearly visible. Park rangers periodically check cars for their passes and you don’t want to get a ticket unduly!

Hiking Tips

Many of the short hikes/walks around Moraine Lake are very easy, even for beginners. They don’t require any high fitness level, so don’t be intimidated. Take it at your own pace and just enjoy the beautiful views. Remember to always dress in layers. You might get outta bed in the morning with frost in the air, but by midday, it could be sweltering! So be prepared for all kinds of weather. Bring a large refillable water bottle, as even with a short or easy hike, you need to keep hydrated. Wear comfortable hiking or running shoes. Even if the trails are flat, you’ll be doing a lot of walking and you’ll want to be comfortable.

Be Bear Aware! 

Even if you’re going on an easy, well-populated hiking trail, you need to be careful of bears. In fact, the area around Lake Louise has the highest ratio of grizzlies to humans in Canada! Something no hiker (or walker) should be without is bear spray. Bear spray can usually be purchased at campground stores or even in your hotel. Ask hotel staff if anyone left any bear spray behind. Since bear spray cannot be brought on the plane, people often check out and simply leave it behind.

In addition to bear spray, being bear aware on your walks is of the utmost importance. Walk and hike in large groups. Talk loudly, so you don’t surprise any bears, especially when turning around corners. Watch out for fresh signs of bear activity, including droppings, torn-up logs, overturned rocks, and diggings. 

Moraine Lakeshore Trail

Once you arrive at the lake the firs thing you should do, is walk along the Moraine Lakeshore Trail. The pathway weaves itself around the lake, giving you lots of different angles at the water and mountains above. The track is 1.5 km long and takes only about 45 minutes to return. The walk weaves in and out of the forest and down to the water’s edge making it such a beautiful walk. You’ll cross over boardwalks, ending at a small babbling rapids tucked into the edge of the forest. Unlike the Lakeshore trail in Lake Louise, this pathway is more visually dynamic, with much lighter crowds.

Canoeing on the Lake

Canoes can be rented on Moraine Lake for $124/hour. While this is still pretty pricey, many people view a trip to Moraine Lake as a bucket list activity. While this isn’t the type of activity you might splurge on every day, getting onto the waters is a truly unique experience. Don’t break the bank and feel like you MUST do this, but if you have the money saved and are a big fan of canoeing, you will definitely enjoy yourself. The canoe dock is only mid-June to mid-September.

Rockpile Trail

As you head back to the parking lot, you’ll find access to the famous Rockpile Trail. There is a reason this short hike is so popular. The Moraine Lake Viewpoint, located just 0.4km uphill, is genuinely one of the most spectacular views you’ll ever see. The trail is very short, but there are lots of steep steps. But once you get to the top, you’ll be glad you did!

Reaching the top of the rock pile you have the most magnificent view overtop of the lake. The water is simply etheral and you feel like you’re up in the clouds. Moraine Lake is located in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, which become very apparent once you are up here. The “ten peaks” are the ten different mountain peaks that can be seen across the vista.

The views you get from the peak of the Rockpile Trail were featured on the Canadian twenty-dollar bill from 1969 to 1979. Since then, many people also call this vista the, “Twenty Dollar View.” The tallest of all the mountains seen from the viewpoint is the Deltaform Mountain, which stands 3424 meters tall.

Consolation Lakes Trail

If you want to adventure out into the wilderness from Moraine Lake, you must take some time to walk the Consolation Lakes Trail. The entrance to the trail is located right next to the washrooms in the Moraine Lake parking lot. Although the trail is 6.1 km, the path is well paved and heavily trafficked, making it a fantastic hike for newbies. The course is relatively flat, and there isn’t too much elevation gained throughout your hike. The trail takes you from Moraine Lake into the woods towards two picturesque alpine lakes. All the while framed by the backdrop of Banff’s incredible mountains. While very well-trafficked by visitors, you always need to be sure to follow the previously mentioned instructions to be bear aware.

Food at Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake is home to both a small cafe and a luxury dining room inside the Moraine Lake Lodge (open during the summer season). The Snowshoe Cafe is a tiny little takeaway restaurant that offers a daily selection of sandwiches, baked goods, soups, and a large selection of coffee, lattes and tea. You can either take your food with you or sit outside on their outdoor charming patio.

The food inside the cafe is super costly for what it is. Partly this is due to the remote nature of the restaurant and probably partly because it’s your only lunch option if you didn’t pack a lunch. It won’t bankrupt you, but a $4 can of soda definitely gave me some sticker shock! We still grabbed a warm cup of coffee and a latte and were impressed by the quality! It was really nice to walk around in the crisp morning with a hot cup of coffee.

The Walter Wilcox Dining Room is open in the evening from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm. Reservations are required as the restaurant is tiny and has limited seating for guests who are not staying at the lodge. The menu features Alberta Beef Tenderloin, Oven Roasted Rack of Lamb, Venison Rack and Pheasant Supreme. It’s definitely a splurge, but the views inside the floor-to-ceiling windowed dining room are spectacular.

Bring Your Own Picnic

The best option for most people is to bring a picnic with you! There are plenty of benches along the trails for you to stop and enjoy a little picnic. But remember, leave no trace! Bring all your garbage back to the designated garbage bins located in the parking lot and beside the cafe. These bins are specifically designed to keep bears out, so you must be sure to only dispose of garbage in these bins.

]]> Launceston, and Tasmania in general, is an overlooked place travellers to Australia often disregard. Less than 2% of tourists who visit Australia make it over to this island state. Perhaps because there are no international flights directly in or out of Tasmania and the fact that the state is located outside the mainland. But the lack of direct access makes Tasmania feel a little more remote and hidden away. It means those who make it out there are rewarded with some of the most pleasant little towns, just like Launceston!

Launceston is untouched by mega-tourism and has a unique landscape only found in this part of the country. Launceston to me felt like a combination of New Zealand’s rich scenery and Australia’s vibrant culture. If you’re a tourist who wants to get off the beaten track and get a little peace and quiet, then Launceston is the place for you.

History

Launceston, located on the northern tip of the state of Tasmania, is one of their two main cities. The other being Hobart, located on the southern end. Launceston is Australia’s third oldest European settlement, established in 1806 after Sydney (in 1788) and Hobart (in 1803). The city is renowned for its well preserved historic buildings, artful food scene and lush countryside.

While I highly enjoyed visiting both Hobart and Launceston, and each had its own pros and cons, Launceston felt more in line with my creative travel sensibilities. The city streets were more artful, their parks lusher. The overall design seemed to be of the utmost importance, even if a bit dated. Like other Australian cities, Launceston features a thriving coffee scene, great food, excellent hikes and an intimacy with the natural environment that you wouldn’t expect from a big city.

Access

The best way to get to Launceston is by plane. A short flight from Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane will land you just 15 minutes outside the city’s centre. While renting a car is advisable to see the rest of Tasmania, we didn’t find that one was necessary at all for our time inside the confines of Launceston’s city centre and outer boroughs.

Best Time to Visit

Launceston and Tasmania, in general, is noticeably colder than the rest of Australia. Don’t come here without checking the weather! We saw a few people step off the plane in shorts and t-shirts in a climate that was more suitable for a winter coat.

From November to March are the best months to travel when the weather is at its most enjoyable. June, July and August are relatively chilly and rainy. Still, the prices of hotels are significantly discounted, and the city is almost empty! Summer is the peak travel season when you’ll find the hotels to be the priciest.

Whereas international travellers might not find their way to Tasmania, local Australians have been frequenting the island more and more, so be sure to check the dates of any Australia holidays or school breaks as these times may also be much busier and more expensive.

What to Pack?

As mentioned above, you might be surprised to see how different the weather is here compared to Australia’s arid deserts and beachy coasts. So much of Tasmania is made up of cool temperate rainforests. In addition to your regular travel essentials, there are a few critical items to bring to Launceston and Tasmania. It’s crucial to pack lots of layers that will help you keep warm in the morning, but which you can shed after a few hours of hiking which warms you right up!

It’s also essential to pack a good raincoat or waterproof windbreaker, which can be super useful since rain is a frequent visitor to Tasmania’s forecasts. The rainforests can get pretty wet. Umbrellas are also a good thing to pack in your bag for extra protection.

Where to Stay

When planning my stay in Launceston, I was so excited to find that almost every single home and hotel listed on Tripadvisor was over 4-stars. This meant that you could throw a dart and end up at a fantastic hotel. Everyone we met was so happy to see us, so proud of their city and more than willing to help us out in any way they could. Whether it was picking us up from the airport or showing us around town, Launceston’s residence were always going over and above our expectations.

We stayed at the Launceston Backpackers, a lovely old house renovated to hold guests. It felt more like staying in someone’s cottage rather than a hotel. I loved the architecture, the stained glass, the old furniture, pretty much everything. It was super affordable and right in the centre of town meaning we could easily walk from place to place without ever having to get on a bus or rent a car.

Price: $47 USD/night

Kurrajong House

Kurrajong House offers accommodation to adult-only guests who enjoy a quiet and tranquil stay. The house is a heritage property that has been lovingly restored. You can choose to stay in either their Heritage guest rooms within the main house or one of two courtyard rooms that overlook their small garden. They are located in Launceston’s luxury end and a short 5-minute walk to the city.

What to do in Launceston

1. Sweetbrew 

The first thing to do in the morning is to grab yourself a cup of coffee! Australia is known for its incredible coffee culture, and Tasmania is no different. Sweetbrew is a local hangout for hipsters and tourists alike. Every coffee is perfectly crafted, and their summer berry cake is something I’ll remember forever!

2. Eat the Day Away at the Harvest Farmer’s Market

For breakfast, head on down to the Harvest Saturday Farmers Market. Stock up on some doughnuts from @sandyssourdough and if you’re craving something savoury, hit up a gluten-free breakfast bowl from @mountgnomonfarm.

Don’t leave without a bottle or two of manuka honey from Tasmania, something which is sure to cure what ails you. Even if you don’t have a kitchen at your hotel, this is the best place to load up on cheese, freshly cured meats, hot-smoked salmon, fresh berries and fruits and hot from the oven bread. This all makes for a super simple picnic luncheon to enjoy later on in the day.

3. Explore Cataract Gorge

And where to eat your picnic lunch, you may ask? There’s no better place than Cataract Gorge! Cataract Gorge is a stunning park in the centre of Launceston. To get to the gorge, you begin by walking along a scenic pathway, called the King’s Bridge-Cataract Walk. This leads you around the South Esk River’s edge to the northern part of the gorge’s basin. From here, you can walk across the Alexandra Suspension Bridge. On the other side of the bridge, you’ll find a large swimming pool to be enjoyed in the summer months.

4. Get up High on the Gorge Scenic Chairlift

I found the best part of our visit to the gorge was getting to ride the antique chairlift! The chairlift, built in 1972, and is still the longest single-span lift in the world! We were one of the only people in the park during our visit and figured the lift wouldn’t be open. But to our surprise, a quiet old woman was sitting at the desk to welcome us in and let us ride. It felt almost strange like they had kept it open just for us. We giggled the entire way across the gorge, swinging our feet, nervously laughing as the chairlift climbed higher and higher. The chairlift covers 457 metres and moves pretty slowly for you to really take in the scenery around you.

When you get off the chairlift, you can explore the landscaped Victorian garden and small cottage restaurant on the other side of the basin. You’ll find unusual Tasmanian flora and fauna, including ferns, exotic plants, and even wild peacocks.

The trip costs $9 USD for a one-way ticket or $12 USD for an “Across & Back” ticket. We opted for the one-way sine we enjoyed the walk back to the entrance. The lift is open every day from 9am, 365 days a year! In the winter it closes at 4:30 pm, in the Spring and Autumn it closes at 5 pm and in Summer from 5:30 pm to 6 pm.

5. Wonder at the Works inside Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery

If you’re visiting Launceston, you should take some time to admire some local and National Australian art. I found that Australia has such a distinct fine art style and something completely unique compared to European or even American art. My favourite part of this museum was the Tasmanian art collection from the colonial era to the present day. Their gallery even has a focus on Tasmania’s convict history and the strange and powerful art produced by the prisoners.

6. Discover the old Craftsmanship inside the Old Umbrella Shop

Launceston’s historic streets look as though they have been preserved in amber from the late 19th century. While other Australian cities, even in Tasmania, have moved along with modernization, Launceston captures the looks and feel of Australias at the turn of the century. One of the oldest shops which is still up and running is the Old Umbrella Shop. Three generations of the same family have produced and repaired umbrellas in this shop since 1860. The umbrellas here are even crafted from local Tasmanian wood. The historic signage out front is the same as it was in the mid-Victorian era. Giving you a glimpse of what this entire street once might have looked like.

7. Indulge in Fine Dining at Stillwater

For one of the best meals, you’ll have on your entire trip, be sure to book reservations in advance at Stillwater Restaurant. Stillwater is located inside a beautifully restored 1830s flour mill. If you’re lucky enough to get a seat with a view, you can soak in the stunning landscape of the Tamar River while you dine.

Stillwater prides itself on focusing on local food, grown by producers all across Tasmania. Their seafood options are my absolutely favourite dishes but their menu changes so often I can’t recommend one in particular. Whatever you choose, you can’t go wrong. Their wine bar is also stacked with Australian wines, which we know, are some of the best producers of wine world-wide. So relax and indulge in some fine dining!

8. Go Back in Time inside Franklin House

Franklin House gives visitors a glimpse into what life was like for the new colony of Launceston in 1838. It’s Tasmania’s oldest house museum, which has been restored to its original appearance. The house was first built for businessman, Britton Jones. Jones himself was an ex-convict who managed to escape the system and make a new life for himself and his family. It was so exciting to explore the home and discover the original furniture and decor. This allowed us to imagine how all the home here would have looked in years past, like stepping back in time.

9. Sip on Aged Ales at James Boag Brewery Experience

Tasmania’s most famous beer is the Boags beer, which is sold worldwide but highly regarded in Launceston where the brewery is located. On the Brewery Tour experience, you’ll learn all about what makes their beer unique, see how its made and learn about the history of this Tasmanian Brewery.

At the end of the tour, you’ll be invited into their bar where you’ll receive a 30-minute guided beer tasting! Here you’ll be able to taste a flight of their brews paired with locally produced cheese! I’ve been to many a beer tasting but never one which included cheese, so that captured my attention straight away (I’m a HUGE cheese lover) and I did think it really gave an interesting spin on the tasting.

10. Get Spooked on Launceston City Ghost Tours

Ok, now I know ghost tours might seem like something kinda cheesy, but I LOVE them. To me, they are just like a history tour but with a slightly macabre angle. Launceston has a deep and dark convict past. It’s said that some of the prisoners who were sentenced here can still be seen roaming the streets, their ghosts clinging to the mortal world. Walking the old streets of Launceston, your guide will tell tales of the past, making the city’s history come alive. There is both an adult-only and family-friendly option, so there is something for all ages! Obviousy the family-friendly tour is a little less scary so if you spook easily that might be the tour for you.

11. Wander down Memory Lane on a Self Guided History Walk

Launceston has some of the best colonial and Victorian architecture anywhere in Australia. Cameron street alone perfectly exemplifies what the rest of Australia would have looked like during the boom times of the 19th century. You can do your own self-guided walking tour from Albert Hall in the east to the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in the west. This tour focuses on specific buildings along the route that tell rich tales of the city’s architectural and social history. There are little plaques along the way to help inform you of the stories as you go. And it’s a great way to explore the city on foot.

While Hobart might be the more famous of the two large Tasmania cities, Launceston is my favourite. It had a quiet charm which I find intoxicating. If you’re looking for a little escape from mainland Australia’s busy beaches and modern cities, Launceston is a great place to come.

]]> Sitting on the rocky ground at midnight, staring up at a cloudless, star-filled sky at the foot of Aoraki Mount Cook is one of those memories which is imprinted on my brain like a postcard. Even years after my trip I can close my eyes and still see that rough cut, a snow-covered mountain standing tall in front of me. The only sounds which surrounded me the cooing of kiwi birds and the soft melody of the wind.

Aoraki Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand. It soars 3,724 meters (12,218 feet) above the land around it. The mountain is infamous for climbing. It was even used by famed climber Edmund Hillary as a practice hike before he summitted Mount Everest. Surrounding the base of the mountain is the Tasman Glacier and the Hooker Glacier, two of the longest and largest remaining glaciers in the world. It truly is a place of incredible natural wonders and there are so many things to see and do here.

When to Visit

I think the best time to visit Aoraki Mount Cook is as Springtime arrives. This is from September to November in New Zealand. The temperatures in September to November range from highs of 20°C degrees and lows of 0°C . It can get especially chilly at night but you just need to pack on those layers!

Their peak season for tourism is from December to February when the weather is the warmest. Temperatures range from a high of 25°C and a low of 10°C. But warm weather also means you’ll see more tourists and need to book things well in advance.

March into May is when New Zealand sees autumnal weather and is another great time to visit since those fall colours are impressive across the park. The temperatures during these months are similar to those in the Spring.

March, May and October are the rainest months to visit. But since the mountains are located in a valley, they experience a bit of rain throughout the entire year.

Maori History

Although the Europeans named it Mount Cook the natives have long called it Aoraki. Aoraki, according to Maori legend, was a young boy who was the son of the Sky Father and Earth Mother. The name means “Cloud Piercer”. The word “Ao” means “cloud” and “Ranki” means “sky or weather”.

According to the legend, Aoraki and his brothers were visiting their mother on Earth when their canoe became stranded on a reef and capsized. The canoe became the land on which the south island of New Zealand was formed, and Aoraki, the tallest of all the brothers, turned into a mountain.

The Maori Ngāi Tahu tribe which inhabits this region considers Aoraki the most sacred ancestor of their tribe. It links the physical world and the spiritual word together. And when walking through the park it’s important to remember this and honour the land upon which you visiting. Today, it is respectful to call the mountain either Aoraki Mount Cook or simply Aoraki as it recognizes the indigenous inhabitants of this region.

Do I Need to Know how to Hike?

I am by NO means an athletic person! But even I found there were so many hiking trails here that appeal to every level of hiker. Some are not much more than a walk along some rough terrain into the gorgeous valleys surrounding the mountains. But if you are a more seasoned hiker you can set out on real adventures up the mountain. There really are trails for everyone, from beginner to expert.

Where to Stay?

Hermitage Hotel

I opted to stay at the acclaimed Hermitage Hotel right in the centre of Mount Cook National Park. This place books up very far in advance so the sooner you can make plans, the better. Their hotel has various room options from Chalets to Suites where you even have your kitchen. These are surprisingly affordable when considering the location and you CANNOT beat the views out their windows. Even if you just sat inside and looked out your window all day you’re bound to have an amazing time. Their prices range from $113 USD-$198 USD/night for the standard room depending on the season.

YHA Hostel Mount Cook

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option check out YHA Hostel. This hostel offers up dorm beds in a variety of combinations. If you’re a family you can get a private double room with bunk beds. There also are large dorm rooms if you’re travelling solo or with a group of friends. They have free parking, a fully equipped kitchen and they even have a sauna! Rooms cost anywhere between $22 USD-$117 USD depending on your choice of room (the private family rooms being the most expensive).

Aoraki Mount Cook Alpine Lodge

The Aoraki Mount Cook Alpine Lodge is a great mid-range price option. Their rooms are simple but they still all have stunning views and communal cooking spaces. So even if you don’t opt for the room with a kitchenette, there are places to make your meals. Rooms start at $111 USD a night.

How to Access Aoraki Mount Cook by Car

The only road into Aoraki Mount Cook National Park is via State Highway 80. This road starts near Twizel, and leads directly to Mount Cook Village, where the road ends. If you’re driving in from Christchurch, you’ll take Highway 79, to Highway 8 and then onto Highway 80. There are plenty of things to see on your drive into the park. Be sure to read this post before planning your route. Many of the sights below you can visit on your drive into the park! I’ve laid them all out in order below to make your trip as seamless as possible.

Can you get there without renting a car?

While most journeys in New Zealand are done by renting a car, if you have flown in Christchurch you can get an intercity bus to Mount Cook. The bus will drop you off at the Aoraki Hermitage Hotel. The return price is $229 so it’s a great option if you can’t drive yourself.

Another option is to take a day trip from Christchurch. Although these tours cover most of the big sights, you’ll only get to experience them for a few minutes outside the coach. And you’ll miss out on most of the hikes. But if you’re pressed for time and want to see this mountain before leaving, these tours are a great option.

What to See and Do While in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park

#1. Lake Tekapo 

Whether you’re driving in from Twizel or Christchurch, be sure to make a short detour to Lake Tekapo. Lake Tekapo lies in the heart of the Mackenzie District. The word “Tekapo” is from the Maori word “taka” which means sleeping mat and “PO” which means night.

The lake is located inside a huge basin. Because of its location, protected from the rough coastal weather, it is surrounded by some incredible flora and fauna. The lake is encircled by lush golden tussock grass and sprawling flowers. One of the most popular times of the year to see the Lake is in the spring when the Lupin flowers bloom. Lupins are in actuality weeds so they spread like wildfire! But they are the most beautiful weeds in the entire world! The water which makes up the lake is drawn from melted glaciers. This glacier water contains finely ground rocks that give the lake that magical turquoise colouring.

#2. Church of the Good Shepard

Located on the edge of Lake Tekapo is the Church of the Good Shepard. This is the most famous church in New Zealand due to its scenic location. It was built in 1935 as a memorial to commemorate early settlers of the region.

3 Lake Pukaki

As you continue along Highway 80 towards Mount Cook make a stop at Lake Pukaki. Your eyes will be amazed looking at the almost neon blue waters of this natural wonder. Lake Pukaki was also formed by the melting glaciers which give the lake that distinctive blue colour. These glacier lakes are created by years of grinding on the bedrock, called glacial erosion. Silt-sized particles make the water appear cloudy and therefore reflect the colour of the sky differently from normal lakes.

4 Aoraki Mount Cook Road Photo

About 15 minutes before arriving into Aoraki Mount Cook village you’ll have one of the best opportunities for a photo! As you approach, you’ll see Mount Cook in all its glory appear in the centre of the road. The mountain is framed perfectly and often there isn’t another car in sight. This makes it truly such a spectacularly intimate photo.

#5. Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre

Upon arriving at your accommodation, before setting right out on a hike it’s good to go and visit the Sir Edmund Hillary Visitor Center. This little museum is located inside the Heritage Hotel and is dedicated to one the world’s greatest explorers; Sir Edmund Hillary.

Sir Edmund Hillary used Aoraki Mount Cook National Park as a training ground for his summit to Everest. The visitor centre has a theatre show which has a great documentary about Hillary. It also contains fantastic historical objects and documents about Aoraki Mount Cook Park. It details the history of hiking in the park over the years and is a great primer for new explorers.

#6. Governors Bush Walk 

If you’re an inexperienced hiker (like me!) or just looking for a short walk to get your bearings, take off on the Governors Bush Walk. This is the easiest hike in the park but also provides several lookout points near the village of Mount Cook. You’ll even get a chance to see some unimaginable mountain views and a surprise waterfall!

#7. Dine under the Stars

The Hermitage Hotel offers up one of the best locations to see Mount Cook under the veil of darkness. It’s pretty beautiful during the day as well but at night it’s honestly just spectacular. Their panorama restaurant has windows around the entire room. This means no matter where you sit you’ll have a gorgeous view while enjoying some fine dining.

If you can swing it, be sure to book your dinner around sunset as you’ll be able to enjoy both the mountains during the day and under the stars. Their menu is shockingly well priced. Meals start at only $60 for their ala cart menu and $84 for their ala cart menu with wine pairings (I’d recommend this as it adds to your experience).

#8. Star Gaze!

As night falls, it’s time to pile on the layers and lie out under the stars. Aoraki Mount Cook National Park is part of the Dark Sky Reserve. This is a 4,3oo sq/km area which is protected from artificial light pollution. The park is the only Dark Sky Reserve in the entire southern hemisphere. Located inside the park, Mount John Observatory uses this lack of light pollution, to properly be able to study the stars and beyond.

Being inside this Dark Sky Reserve at night means you have some of the best views of the night sky anywhere in the world. There are plenty of stargazing tours you can take part in or use the telescopes at the Hermitage Hotel to get an even better experience. I’d also recommend downloading a stargazing app. The SkyView app is free and one of the best out there. It uses augmented reality to show you various constellations as you move your phone across the sky. It will even show you what planets you might be able to spot as well!

#9. The Hooker Valley Trail

As early as you can manage it the next morning, get up and head out to the Hooker Valley Track. Hiking this trail as the sun rises across the valley is an unimaginable experience. This hike is about 3 hours there and back and is suitable for almost every fitness level. You still need good walking shoes but hiking boots aren’t requires. The hike is free and takes you through the Hooker Valley towards glacial Hooker Lake.

As you go you’ll be able to enjoy the stunning views of the New Zealand mountain ranges all around you. The first large lookout you’ll come to is the Mueller Lake Glacier lookout. You’ll cross over a famous suspension bridges and finally arrive at the Hooker Valley Boardwalk. Hooker Lake is still filled with icebergs so see how many you’re able to spot.

#10. Scenic Helicopter Ride

Ok, truthfully Helicopter Rides aren’t for me since I’m terrified to go in one. But so many of my fellow travel companions loved their experience I had to include this! Seeing this enter park from high up in the air would honestly be such an incredible experience. Most of these helicopter flights last around 25-55 minutes (depending on the helicopter company you go with and price you want to pay). They all provide views of the Franz Josef, Fox Glacier, the surrounding lakes and Mount Cook itself. Some of the tours also offer a soft landing in a snowfield with a photo opportunity in the middle of nowhere. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity so while they cost a pretty penny they do give you a vantage point which you can’t find anywhere else.

#11. Tasman Glacier View Track

The Tasman Glacier Trail is a 1-hour return hike perfect for the whole family. A short drive away from the Aoraki Mount Cook Village, this trail leads you to the Tasman Glacier Lake. Upon arriving at the lake, you can see dozens and dozens of floating icebergs. These have all cracked off the huge nearby glacier. This is another great place to come early in the morning to view a gorgeous sunrise view across the valley with Aoraki Mount Cook in the distance

#12. Tasman Lake Boating or Kayaking Experience 

When coming to the Tasman Lake viewpoint you can also book a boat tour which will allow you to get on the water to see these glaciers up close. The kayaking option will take you even closer as you can paddle right up next to these ancient water features.

#13. Hike to the Mueller Hut (Expert only)

Be warned, this hike is only for experienced hikers and requires booking in advance! I didn’t do this trek but felt the need to mention it as there might be some among you who came all this way for a real adventure! The Mueller Hut Route takes 3–5 hr one way. Many people opt to do this hike and stay overnight in the hut. Then they return the next morning. This is the main reason that reservations for this hike are required. Summer is the best time to do this hike as during the winter months the trail is even more difficult. You’ll need experience in walking on ice and using ice axes and crampons. They also require practice with route finding and using an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel.

The hut at the end of the trail lies over 1,800m above sea level. From this tiny hut, you have one of the most stunning views of the nearby Mueller Glacier. By staying the night in the Hueller Hut you can experience the night sky surrounded by nothing but snow-covered mountains. The hut costs $36 NZ per person per night. They also offer guided tours which will be of some help to climbers with experience who still require some assistance with the most difficult portions of the trail. If you are wondering if you will be able to do the hike or not, ask for advice! Park rangers at any information stations are more than welcome to provide advice and assistance.

#14. Red Tarns Track

One of the best hikes to spend your last night in Aoraki Mount Cook is the Red Tarns Track. This 2-hour return hike is relatively easy for anyone with a medium fitness level. The most difficult part of this hike is the steep steps which can be exhausting. But just take your time, that’s always my advice. After gaining over 300 m of elevation you’ll find yourself at this marvelous viewpoint. It looks out over the valleys below and is an optimal place to be at sunset. The area is called the Red Tarns because of the red pond weeds that grows in this area.

#15. The Sir Edmund Hillary Café & Bar

The Sir Edmund Hillary Café & Bar at the Hermitage Hotel is one of the best places to say goodbye to this wondrous place. The cafe has outdoor seating which is the perfect place to eat breakfast on your last day. The cafe specializes in classic Kiwi fare like salt and pepper squid, hot cheese toasties, smoked salmon pizza and my favourite, the breakfast bun! Sitting here, looking out at the mountains while sipping my coffee is a memory I’ll never forget. Probably the best breakfast view I’ll ever have 🙂

History & Information

The White Tank Mountains are a fascinating range of carved stone. The mountains were created by the huge flash floods that sent rainwater pouring down the canyon year after year, creating depressions in the white granite rocks. In 1893, gold was starting to be discovered in central Arizona. Because of the water that past through the rocks, a natural basin was formed. Having access to water on the long road through the mountains to central Arizona was so important for the gold miners. The water basin was named “the White Tank” as the water was surrounded by bright white granite cliffs. Between 1898 and 1902 the natural basin which held the water collapsed due to a heavy rainstorm. But the name remained.

The mountain range takes up about 30,000 acres and the highest part is over 4,000 feet. As early as 500 BC, the Hohokam native people began to build villages throughout this area. Evidence of these sites has been discovered in archaeological excavations.

When to Go

The summer is HOT in Phoenix! Even before the sun comes up it can be over 100 degrees in the sun. So I would always advise against going out hiking in the middle of the summer in Phoenix unless you’re a huge fan of the heat. Otherwise, as long as you stick to the beginning of the day, you can usually avoid the heat pretty well. Early in the morning will also mean you will have the desert to yourself! This trail is often busier during the afternoon so if you want a peaceful walk to yourself, come early in the morning. 

My favourite time to go hiking in Phoenix is during the springtime when the desert flowers are blooming! Yes, there really are flowers in the desert. Wildflowers generally bloom in the Sonoran desert from mid-March to late April. And if there has been a lot of rain that year expect a huge burst of colour! This trail is the perfect way to get away from a busy week in the city. It’s a welcome quiet interlude.

Hours, Fees & Parking 

The park entrance fee is $7 USD. If you enter the park on foot, bike or horseback, the fee is only $2. After you pass through the park entrance, continue driving for another 3.5 miles. Drive until you reach the Waterfall Canyon parking lots. In addition to parking, you’ll also find picnic benches and washrooms.

The Park is open: Sun-Thurs: 6 am – 8 pm; Fri-Sat: 6 am – 10 pm.

After paying your entry fee, you can make a stop off at the nature center and library which is located just to the right of the park entrance. Here you can learn more about the mountains or ask the rangers any pressing questions. It’s also a great place to find maps of the trails.

What to Pack

  • Water. Always be sure to pack lots of water! Even if you don’t think it’s going to be that hot, it’s always hotter than you expect. And even a short hike will get you dehydrated, especially when you start working up a sweat.
  • Good walking shoes! Even though this is a beginner trail it’s still important to wear good footwear. I’ve seen people try to make this hike in sandals and once they get to the top of the waterfalls, the path is much rockier and it’s very easy to lose your footing.
  • A hat. Always be sure to wear a large brimmed hat to keep the sun off your head. This helps prevent any chance of heatstroke if its a particularly hot day.
  • Sunscreen. Sunscreen is a necessity even on cooler days because the sun is still out. And in Phoenix, we tend to get really cloudless skies. Sunscreen of at least SPF 30 depending on your skin type is best for hikers.
  • Sunglasses. A good pair of sunglasses are also important to wear as they can make a big difference in protecting your eyes from the bright sun.
  • A picnic! Although the hike isn’t very long, it’s a beautiful place to have a little picnic snack. When you reach the top of the mountain the views across Phoenix are stunning and it’s nice to sit and enjoy.

Accessibility

While the last portion of the path has a set of stones and stairs to climb, the majority of the trail actually has been made to be wheelchair accessible! The first portion of the Waterfall Trail is paved, allowing mobility aids to be used. This route also has a series of benches along the way to ensure those with mobility issues have places to stop and rest. I love that this makes it so accessible for so many people! As all easy trails should attempt to be where possible.

Pets

Dogs are allowed on the trail so long as they are leashed. Since the first mile is very flat animals will find this trail easy to walk on but older or less nimble dogs might find the last mile, with all the rocks and steps, more difficult.

The Trail

The Waterfall Trail is a fantastic beginner hike. It’s only 1.8 miles long and could easily be done in about an hour if you didn’t stop along the way. But definitely stop and look around! That’s half the fun! The trail takes you through all the beautifully weird flora and fauna that Arizona has to offer. Cacti are abundant on the trail. If you’ve never seen the desert before this is an amazing introduction to all the cool varieties of cacti that grow in the Sonoran Desert!

Staghorns

Old staghorns slump on the sidelines as you walk through the trail. The Staghorn cholla (Opuntia versicolor) are one of those cacti that looks like it’s from an alien planet. They have thin branches where crawl up from the ground covered in thin spikes. The name versicolor comes from the fact that their long-lasting flowers come in a range of colours; from ed, yellow, purple or intermediate shades.

Barrel Cactus

Barrel cacti poke their heads out of the rocks as you walk along the path. The Ferocactus, or more colloquially Barrel cactus is one of the most commonly seen cacti in the Sonoran desert. The word Fero means “fierce or wild” as these cacti are some of the most ominous looking plants growing in the desert. In some species of the barrel cactus, the spikes which protrude from the cactus are curved, like a fishhooks. Which are pretty painful if you get stuck. Barrell cacti are one of my favourites when they bloom. Their yellow and red flowers bloom on top, look like a little crown on their head.

The Great Saguaro

The Saguaro cactus (or Carnegiea gigantea) is often referred to as the king of cacti! It has become the symbol of the Sonoran Desert and of Phoenix itself. The cactus grows up out of the earth like a column and develops braches, often referred to as arms. Some saguaros have been known to grow up to 25 different arms throughout their life! Saguaros are covered in large spines that protect the plant from animals. But even still, owls are often seen roasting in the trunks. In the late spring, saguaros bloom and grow beautiful white flowers which are said to smell like overripe melons. After they flower they will produce large red fruit, which is eaten by animals like finches, woodpeckers, doves, bats, tortoise, javelina and coyotes.

Teddy Bear Cacti

The “Teddy Bear” cactus is one of the most interesting cacti found along the edge of the trail. But don’t let that cute name fool you! These cacti are very dangerous! The cactus is officially called the Cylindropuntia bigelovii and is best known for its furry appearance. The furry texture is actually just a solid mass of thick spines that completely cover the stems. The form of the cacti looks almost like an animal and led to the name “teddy bear”. But it’s also known as the “jumping teddy bear”. The jumping part is due to the fact that if you even brush past the cactus, the cholla’s spines will grab onto the fibres of your clothes and dig their way into your skin. Ouch! Not quite the cuddly plant it seems to be….but they are still so interesting to look at from afar.

Wildlife

While most of the animals which live in these mountains are nocturnal there are some bits of wildlife you should keep an eye out for! The most commonly seen birds are cactus wrens and if you’re lucky you might spot a roadrunner! My favourite things to spot are the multitudes of lizards and reptiles which crawl along the rocks and poke their heads out to warm themselves in the sun. Mule deer, coyotes, mountain lions and javelinas have all been spotted by visitors but are extremely RARE!

Petroglyph Plaza 

As you continue along the path, you’ll soon come upon one of the most interesting parts of the trail; the Petroglyphs. The Petroglyph Plaza is where you can find a grouping of these ancient images. Petroglyphs are images created by removing part of a rock surface by carving into the stone. These are the earliest form of art. Ancient tribes would have used symbols to tell stories more than pictorial drawings. The Hohokam tribes which lived here from 100 BC to 1200 AD would have been the ones creating these works of art. Their style was very circular and curvy when compared to the art of other tribes.

Also located inside the Petroglyph plaza is a large rain barrel that has now been riddled with bullet holes and punctures.

Waterfall

After hiking for some time you’ll reach the pinnacle of the trail, the waterfall! Now, truthfully most of the time when you get here there will be little more than a puddle of water inside the basic. But, usually in the spring, when there’s been a significant amount of rainfall, a temporary waterfall appears seemingly from out of nowhere – falling from the sky.

From the top of the mountain, you’ll get one of the most lovely Sonoran deserts views looking across the city. This is a wonderful place to stop and sit. Depending on the time of year, the valley below could be bursting with green or keeping its cool with golden and brown colours.

As you make your way back down, look at the sprawling desert, slowly disappearing as the city pops up in the distance. From above, the rugged mountains that surround the valley seem to tightly cradle that precious little city in their palms, keeping it safe from the world outside.

But all good things must come to an end. As you drive back to city life, enjoy the view of the saguaros spread out across the valley, as if popping up to say goodbye!

]]> Ærø or ‘Aero’ is one of those destinations in Denmark that doesn’t get a lot of attention. It is TRUE hidden gem that any traveller anxious to find something a little bit different. Ærø is a tiny island surrounded by the Danish Baltic Sea – only 30 km in length and 8 km wide. But its small size makes it the perfect place for travellers to visit and explore on foot or by bike. My adventures on Ærø were some of the most memorable in Europe because of the people I met, unique experiences, and breathtaking scenery. This peaceful, colourful, darling little island is filled with different villages spread across picturesque rolling hills. All the different destinations can easily be visited by bike or on foot. The best way to explore the Ærø and take in all those stunning views.

When to Visit

Before you head on your adventure, one word of warning. Ærø is primarily a summer destination. From September to May, most shops, restaurants and activities aren’t open or on a very limited schedule. I visited just at the beginning of May, during the very start of the tourist season, and even then, the island was very quiet, and the opening hours of the shops were pretty limited, requiring a fair bit of planning. That being said, there was something about visiting a seemingly uninhabited land covered in antiquated Danish architecture that felt like we were explorers, discovering something hidden from the ages and history books.

But for the best experience and ability to visit everything in this post, you might want to visit the island in the full bloom of summer when it’s full of people with a lively atmosphere and a plentiful amount of activities to experience.

Prices in Ærø

Ærø is a fairly expensive island to visit, and I frequently find many tourists complaining about the prices of food and accommodation. Denmark is a slightly more expensive European city to visit, and then when you add these small islands with little access to the mainland, you end up with high prices on things like food, drink and hotels. Knowing this in advance really helps you set up good expectations, and although the lodging and food might cost a bit more, so many of the activities on the island, like biking and hiking, won’t cost you a thing!

Access by Ferry

Svendborg is your best place to start to make your way onto the island. It’s the largest town, with a Ferry over to the island and a train station that runs more frequently than the other ferry towns close to Ærø. The walk from the train station to the Ferry platform is short, and there is an adorably quaint Bed and Breakfast beside it, which offers great food and drink options for you to enjoy if you find yourself waiting a few hours for the ferry like we did. The ferry has some food options, too, if you find yourself rushing to meet the ship without eating.

You can buy your tickets aboard the boat, and be sure to buy a return ticket as it’s cheaper to do it that way rather than pay each way separately. The return ticket costs $35 US during the regular season, but if you head out there during the off-season, it only costs $13. Ferries run about every hour on the weekdays and slightly less often on weekends and holidays. The trip from Svendborg to Ærø takes about 75 minutes. 

Svendborg to Ærøskøbing

If your trip takes you there in May, be prepared for an amazing site as you cross the sea. As you sail towards Ærø, gold fields appear in the distance. The blossoming flowers in the fields and farmlands all over the hills and valleys produce a golden colour. Against the bright blue seas and the white flurry clouds, it’s a colour spectrum unlike anything I’d ever seen. When you arrive in Ærø from Svendborg, you’ll dock in the town of Ærøskøbing. Ærøskøbing is one of the larger villages on the island, and from here, you can make your way to your accommodations anywhere on the island.

History

Settlements on Ærø have been dated back to as early as 8000 BC. Neolithic burial grounds can still be found on the island, a small memento of the island’s incredible Viking past. In the 17th century, the island was mainly run by a Duke, a member of the Danish royal family. From 1622 to 1633, one of their most prolific ruler, Duke Christian, controlled the island.

When Duke Christian died, the islanders found a banner in his manor house composed of nine pieces of cloth in three different colours, each representing a different part of what made Ærø so special. Red was the colour of life, green was the deep colour of the Baltic sea, and golden yellow was for the beautiful flowers covering the spring island, signifying great crops and lush produce. This remains the flag of Ærø to this day. After the Duke’s death, the island was divided between the Duke’s four brothers into the four main villages on the island we still can visit today.

Villages of Ærø

The island is mainly populated by small farms across different villages. There are three main towns around the island where you’ll find the most things to do and places to stay. The largest village is Marstal, with a whopping 2,340 permanent inhabitants. After that, the biggest is Ærøskøbing with 978 and Søby with 598! This alone was reason enough for me to want to travel there. These tiny hamlets have such an amazingly tight-knit atmosphere, as everyone needs to work so close together for their little island to prosper. 

Ærøskøbing

Ærøskøbing is my favourite of them all. Many people call this place a fairy tale town. My favourite travel author Rick Steve dubbed it “a ship’s town in a bottle” as its architecture and charm have been perfectly preserved for years. Marstal is the largest city on the island and has the strongest connections with its maritime history, and you’ll find this theme strong throughout the village. Søby is located at the northernmost point on the island and is the smallest village. It is where all the old Viking boats are still being restored and where you’ll find the iconic Ærø lighthouse.

Where to Stay

Airbnb

There are some incredible Airbnb options in Ærø. Multiple locations allow you to sleep in converted granaries, bakeries, and farmhouses, which have now become comfortable accommodations. One of the most impressive is a seventeenth-century manor where King Frederik V stayed in 1750. Staying here is like experiencing a small part of Ærø’s history. The apartments have been restored but still contain a contemporary Danish modern art and antique collection. The rooms cost about $180/night, and the weekdays are often cheaper than the weekends.

Bed and Breakfasts

Stay in a converted sea captain’s manor, built in 1784, where you’ll be cared for by the owner Susanna who serves afternoon tea to all her guests in her charming Danish garden. Vestergade 44 bed and breakfast can be found up the street from the ferry station in Ærøskobing, so it’s easily accessible even on foot. There are a variety of rooms, each decorated in its own style with collections of art and antiques to make the room feel authentic and lived in. The rooms cost $189 US/night for a double room.

Guesthouses

The difference between a guest house and a bed-and-breakfast is that inside the guest house, you have ample access to the kitchen, living rooms and other parts of the house. It’s more like staying in a room in a large house, so you feel a part of a lively community of people.

There are various guesthouses to choose from, so just look at what unique features they have and pick your favourite. Bakkehuset, located on the island’s northeast side, just minutes away from the sea, is a post-card perfect place to stay. You have access to their lush gardens, where you can even sample different fruits from their trees. The rooms are surprisingly modern, with an unmistakable Danish touch. $212 US/night (for more than one night).

How to Get Around

By Car

If you’re renting a car while visiting Ærø, you’ll find exploring the island incredibly easy. There is ample parking in town, and even if you want to stop your car along the roads, it’s easy enough to just pull over and enjoy the view. Most guesthouses and Airbnbs have parking options if you want to leave the car alone and spend the rest of your time on Ærø by foot or bike.

by Bus

If you arrived on the island without a car, you might wonder how you could get around. The island offers a free tourist bus which runs the length of the island from Søby to Marstal via Ærøskøbing. They depart about once an hour in each direction. For the complete timetable, you can check it out here. After 9 am, they accept bikes on the bus, so if you find yourself out of energy, this is always an option to help you get back to your lodging.

Our guesthouse host picked us up from the ferry station when we arrived and even offered to drive us to and from different destinations on the island, so never be nervous to ask your hosts for help. We found everyone on the island incredibly helpful and kind, and they were keen to show off their favourite parts of Ærø.

by Bike

Biking across the island was our main method of transportation. After settling down in your hotel or at your guesthouse, go about finding a bike. Every guesthouse or hotel will rent you a bike (usually for free) that you can ride all over the island. No bike locks are needed, as Ærø is the safest place in the world! Just park your bike anywhere that is safe from traffic and head on your way.

Advice on Biking around the Island

For the most part, the island is fairly easy to bike around. But when the wind picks up, and you’re biking up hills, it can require a little more effort, but it’s well worth it. Taking a tour of the island by bike, you’ll see, in a much more intimate way. See the texture of the landscape, the smell of the wind and all the little details that pop out at you only by whizzing around on a two-wheel joy-ride. Biking across the countryside, you’ll see wild lilacs, roses, buck-thorn and more of the incredible wild and farmed flower fields. You’ll pass thatched houses and old Danish churches. Bike maps can be found at the tourist office or just from your host. We stuck our paper map in our bike basket and used that as our GPS the entire time.

Things to Do on Aero

I wanted to break up the activities into various villages and areas of the island. This is a perfect way to break up your days. Take a bike ride to one village and explore what you find there. Don’t be scared to get lost. We often got off the main road or pathway and found various surprising treasures. All the different places to see are detailed on the map.

Things to Do in Ærøskøbing

Walking around the old town

Truly my favourite thing to do while in the old fairy-tale village of Ærøskøbing was to explore the colourful, antiquated houses and cobblestone lanes. Some of these houses date back to the 1600s. And honestly haven’t been touched, except for a bit of new paint, ever since. The main road is great for spotting all these beautiful houses. But be sure to explore the side streets and alleys that veer off to find those hidden corners of the village which can unlock all sorts of secrets.

Even after hundreds of years, the owners’ care in maintaining their homes means they look unchanged but in great condition. Like a ship in a bottle, protected from harm or time. Keep your eyes peeled for the various red-painted buildings. These houses were once painted using real ox blood, giving them a slightly macabre feeling as you pass by, despite the cheery colour.

The Mirror Houses

Although it’s rumoured that no one locks their doors in this town, if you look closely, you’ll see many houses have strange mirrors outside their front windows. These mirrors are used to see the street from inside the house. But they weren’t used for security; they were for town gossip! In a town as small as this, gossip runs ripe, and it’s amazing to see these devices they created to make it easier to spy on their neighbours, something you wouldn’t see anywhere else in the world. We made it game spotting all the different mirrors as we passed by each house along the lane.

Torvet Square

The main town square is located outside of the Ærøskobing church. Although not labelled on any maps, you’ll see the words “Visdommens Kiled” marked where you’ll find the square. This, translated from Danish, means “the Source of Wisdom.” In the middle ages, meetings in the town square were the only way such a small village would learn about the day’s news or what was happening on the mainland. Today, in the busier summer months, marketplaces often sell goods and foods from across the island. And still, even today, villagers meet here to discuss the local news and gossip about the latest town tittle-tattle.

In the centre of the square are two old hand pumps. For years many of the houses in the village had to use to get their water from these two hand pumps alone. And while this seems like something which would have been used hundreds of years ago, they were still being used by villagers as recently as 1951 when the last house finally got running water installed!

Doorways of Ærø

One of the things I loved to study most when exploring Ærøskobing was looking at all the different doorway designs. The town feels so alive and vibrant. Each quirky-looking door makes the house feel like they have its own personality and character. Despite this small, quiet village, it feels lively and exciting just with a little paint and decoration.

Ærøskøbing Church

Besides the town square, you’ll find Ærøskøbing Church. You can spot it from afar by its red terracotta-coloured roof standing tall above the houses, capped by its green copper onion dome. This church dates back to 1756, but the land it was built on has the remains of church foundations dating back to the 13th century. The baptismal font found inside is a remnant of that original church and truly a treasure of the island. One of the most interesting parts of the church is the small entrance, with its bright blue painted doors and geometric roof line in the shape of a cross. This part of the church feels so modern in its simplicity despite being designed so many years ago.

Ærøskøbing Bibliotek

Written across the top of the Ærøskøbing library are the words’ with law, you shall build’ written in Danish. This library was established in 1863 and has been a central part of the village. You’ll find old wooden shelves lined with ancient and modern books if you step inside. A small coffee vending machine keeps people awake against the odds as the peaceful silence which fills the room is near impossible not to fall asleep to. If you’re interested in peeking into the archives, you can find a wealth of information about the island’s history dating back hundreds of years. These books are beautifully well-kept, so if you’re a bibliophile, this is the place for you!

Hammerichs Hus

If you’re looking for a quirky museum to visit on a rainy day, check out the Hammerichs Hus. The Hammerichs Hus is a trio of half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. Named after the sculptor Gunnar Hammerich, the museum houses a collection of rarities he collected over his life in Ærø. Upstairs in the house, the walls are lined with over 3000 blue and white porcelain tiles. You’ll love this museum if you love antiques and looking at people’s cabinets of curiosity.

Flaske Peters Samling

Peter Jacobsen was an incredible resident of Ærø who spent his life making ‘ships-in-bottle.’ This museum is dedicated to his life’s work and contains over 750 tiny reproductions. He made over 1,700, but the museum features many different shapes and designs he created. Jacobsen used to brag that he drank every single bottle he made into a ship, although we should mention they are all made from milk bottles. Considering that Ærø is a maritime city, this museum felt wonderfully apt and one of those little oddities you’ll only find in a small town.

Det Gamle Værft

Sitting in the main harbour of Ærøskøbing is the mini ship-repair shop. There is always a vessel sitting out in the yard in different stages of repair. It’s entertaining and interesting to watch them fix up these old boats to head back out on the waters. Just like new. During certain times of the year, they offer tours and even let you learn how to work a blacksmith’s forge used to repair the ships.

Follow the Nightwatch in Aeroskobing

During the busy summer months, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, you can get a nighttime guided tour of the old city of Ærøskøbing. Your guide will be dressed in the old-fashioned garb of a nightwatchman and will lead you around the city as the sun begins to set, giving the entire place a different atmosphere and appearance. All the guides are great storytellers, and you’ll learn unique tales and legends from the town’s history told by the locals themselves.

Molestien Lane

This thin gravel path across from the beach is a lovely way to peek at some of the real, lived-in houses in Ærø. The path backs out on the back gardens of various residents on the island. Some used to be occupied by boat captains who made Ærø their home. The locals nicknamed this pathway “Virgin’s Lane” as younglings used to court along this path in clear view of their parents, who sat in their gardens watching over them. As you walk along the path, you’ll see dozens of old boats sitting on the grass, flowers and moss growing over their bright and colourful hulls.

Bio Andelen

Bio Andelen, or Andelen Cinema, is the town’s only movie theatre and Denmark’s smallest cinema. Various international films are shown here in their original language, so you’ll almost always find something to watch if you speak English. It’s a great way to spend an evening with the locals!

Ærø Bowlingcenter

If the weather is a little less than perfect, the bowling alley is a great option if you want something to do in the evening or even during the day. There might only be four lanes, but this quaint little alley with its charming cafe is a lovely place to while away the time.

Aero Whisky

You’ll find a long grey building along the Old Merchant’s Court with teal window frames and a small sign with the letters’ DKG’. This is Ærø’s Whisky distillery in Danish called ‘Den Gamle Købmandsgaard.’ The large shop does more than sell whiskey; it is like a little market with delicious baked goods, local produce and whiskey. Their original purpose for establishing the DGK was to help create more jobs in Ærø outside of just the tourism business and to highlight the incredible farmers, cooks and craftsmen in Ærø.

The whiskey distillery is the smallest in Demark and is housed in an old washhouse. You can tour the distillery during high season and sample the whisky they make year-round. It’s interesting to learn that the wort they used in the distilling process is actually provided from the Rise Bryggeri (brewery) just a few villages over. It’s lovely to see how each of these businesses is helping each other to create a better product instead of competing against each other. That is teamwork at its finest.

Blåbær Gårdbutik

Blåbær Gårdbutik is an adorable shop selling a variety of goods, all of which were produced in Ærø by items farmed on the island. From goat’s milk soaps, handicrafts, beeswax candles and sheep wool clothing, everything you’ll find here is made by the locals. The farm was first built in 1850 and has been raising different animals ever since. They are committed to sustainability, quality and animal welfare and welcome visitors to see their farm in the works and visit the shop. Things to Do in Marstal

While Ærøskøbing might feel like a fairy-tale village, Marstal feels like a maritime museum. For centuries Marstal vessels have sailed the seven seas, and even today, its dock is full of commercial and personal boats. Marstal is the economic centre of Ærø and where you can find most day-to-day shops, like the largest supermarket on the island. Ærøskøbing feels like it stopped in the middle ages, while Marstal stands at the forefront of innovations and solar power. The island is on its way to being completely self-sufficient, with Northern Europe’s largest solar power complexes and dozens of windmills powering the island.

Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum in Marstal is the most popular attraction drawing people into the city. The museum details the maritime history of Denmark since the 1600s, and its 37 exhibits span over 5 buildings in Marstal! There are 200 model ships, 130 ships in a bottle, portraits of famous sailors and lots and lots of gear and equipment from original ships. If you’re a fan of maritime history, this doesn’t get much better!

Church of Marstal

The Marstal Church dates back to 1738. The church’s exterior is a simple white brick and red-roofed design with a copper steeple. Inside, things are a little bit different. You’ll notice right away when stepping inside the strong colours! The blue benches are a symbol of the sea and eternity. At the front of the nave is the bright red altar, a lovely triptych painted by the maritime and Greenland painter Carl Rasmussen in 1881. As is fitting for an island church, it depicts Christ calming the storm on the Lake of Genezareth. From the ceiling hang dozens of miniature ships intermingled amongst the chandeliers.

Things to do in Søby

Søby is the smallest of the main villages in Ærø. They call it the gateway to Europe as it is the northernmost point on the island and, therefore, the closest to the mainland of Europe. Today, you’ll find most of Ærø’s fishing fleet. Tourists looking to hire a boat to go out on the water to see if they can get the catch of the day often gather here early in the morning before the sun has even risen.

Skjoldnæs Fyr

At the island’s tip, bikers who make it out here will be rewarded by a beautiful site; the ‘Skjoldnæs’ Lighthouse. It was built in 1881 and still stands today as a landmark of the island. You can still climb to the top, with the most scenic views of the island and across the Baltic Sea. If you feel like the bike ride up here might be too much, you can always take the free bus, which runs all the way to Søby, where you can walk the rest of the way to the lighthouse.

Sæberiet

Sæberiet is a small shop which sells soaps and spiced salts made from different flowers and herbs all grown on the island. During the summer, they open their doors to guests who can come in and see the soap workshop in action. Their unique scents, like elderflower, scotch rose, marigold and lemon balm, make for a wonderful souvenir of the island.

Herremark

This charming little white cottage sells a blend of hand-picked vintage goods, often themed to the season, locally made products and handicrafts. It is a bright and cheery store, and the people who run it are so happy to welcome you inside to browse all their wonderful goods. Økogård Vitsø

This little farm is run by Johannes Hets, who has three big passions: yoga, farming and bees! They offer yoga classes with an unbeatable sea view out in the garden when the weather permits. It’s open to beginners and experts, so if you’re interested in starting your day with a little meditation and relaxation, don’t miss visiting this Johannes. If yoga isn’t your thing, you should still pay the farm a visit and explore the incredible garden which Johannes has grown specifically for his bees. During the summertime, there are bee presentations held by Johannes where visitors can even try their hand at holding bees and tasting the amazing honey the natural flowers of Aero help to produce!

Other Things to See and Do Around the Island

Bregninge Kirke

Biking over to the Bregninge kirke (Bregninge church) is a great way to explore the island’s centre. You’ll be able to spot it long before you arrive, as its tall black tower is visible above the treetops. But like the other churches on the island, they are all inland where the steeples cannot be seen from the water. This was a strategic piece of city planning done by the Islanders.

This would prevent pirates from coming ashore in the middle ages as they would assume the peaceful island was uninhabited. Remnants of the first church built here have been dated back as far as 1100. The current incarnation is a 15th-century gothic design. Inside you’ll find a series of murals of Jesus’ Passion and the life of St. John the Baptist. But my favourite part of the church is the cemetery. A few gravestones are surrounded by a fantastically manicured hedge and flower garden.

Bregninge Store Kro

Down from the Bregninge Church, you’ll find the adorable Bregninge Store Kro. This store is like a little flea market open year-round. Here you’ll find some treasured antiques from all around Denmark, making for a really unique souvenir. If you’re looking for a doorknob or drawer, pull. There are hundreds here to choose from, each with its own vintage charm.

The Vesterstrand Beach Huts

Down from Bregninge, you’ll find dozens of picturesque tiny huts lining a long stretch of sand. These beach huts are brightly coloured and designed to suit each owner’s personality. The miniature huts along the sand have been used here for generations. Once just simple wooden shelters, they are now incredibly functional getaways where locals enjoy picnics on their little balconies, which stretch out from under darling awnings.

It was a bit rainy when we arrived, so no one else was on the beach but us. We hid under one of the huts to avoid the pouring rain as it got worse and worse and hoped that no one would come to shoo us away. Luckily they did not, and we spent the time waiting out the rain, peeking inside the little windows into these huts. Inside, they looked like a minature version of a cottage, with their knickknacks all over the walls, rich textiles layering the small chairs and couches and some even were complete with a sink and a toilet!

Voderup Klint

A few kilometres down from the Beach huts, you’ll find the Voderup Klint. The Voderup’ Klint’, or ‘cliff’ in English, is a 33-meter-high cliff which leads down to a rocky beach. This stretch of emerald green grass reaches out towards the sea and looks more like Ireland than Denmark. It is a scenic place to have a picnic or lunch and watch the waves rise and fall on a windy day. A small pathway leads you down from the top of the cliff towards the water. You can hear the sea crash against the shore as you continue down, and the fresh air here is enough to cure whatever ails you!

Rise Bryggeri

If you find yourself near rising Bryggeri, stop for a cold Danish beer. This was once a small dairy farm which has since been transformed into a cafe and the only beer brewery on the island. The brewery was originally opened in 1926 but closed its doors in 1962. Lucky for you, it was reopened in 2004 when Aero was put back on the map for its incredible tourist appeal and energy-efficient solar power technologies. This microbrewery focuses on quality vs. quantity, so you might pay a little more for what you get, but it’s well worth it. Be sure to try out the nutty and sweet Walnut beer as they make the most unique creation. Upstairs from the brewery, you’ll find a lovely cafe serving uncomplicated Danish comfort food, perfect for warming you up after a windy bike ride.

Ærø Cigar

If smoking a cigar on the balcony with the seaside in your sights is your thing, stop by Ærø Cigar. These small producers grow and hand roll their cigars from pesticide-free farms with locally grown leaves. Danish cigars are unique and worth trying, if only as a special treat.

The Kragnæs Passage Grave

Across the island, there are various Neolithic burial mounds, passage graves and dolmens which trance the pre-Christian history of life on the island. The most famous of these grave sites is the passage grave from the Stone Age, around 3200 BC! A passage tomb consists of a narrow passage made of large stones and one or multiple burial chambers covered in earth or stone.

From afar, it looks like nothing more than a pile of lush grass, but as you approach, you’ll see an arrangement of rocks which forms a chamber. The chamber is 17 meters wide and 2.5 meters high. The rocks on top were not only to mark the tombs; they were a gathering spot for the Viking ancestors. The stones were thought to help with fertility, and even in more modern times, locals have been known to chip off bits of stones and take them home in the hope it imbues them with virility!

Langdyssen Tingstedet

Near the church of Stone Rise, you’ll find a 6,000-year-old dolmen. A ‘dolmen’ is a megalithic tomb with large, flat stones on top of upright ones. While the island was once home to more than 200 of these sites, less than 13 survive today. Once more, these don’t look like much from afar, but when you get closer, you’ll see the ground begin to rise up, and the risen ground takes the shape of a Viking ship. Archaeologists studying the history of Vikings on the island have found evidence that the Viking chiefs were buried here along with their ships.

øhavstien

øhavstien, or the “Archipelago Way,” is a 200-km long hiking trail and one of the longest hiking routes in Denmark. It is divided into seven different sections spread out across Denmark. The 7th section is located in Ærø and starts in Ærøskøbing and runs all along the coast to Søby or vice versa. You can hike the entire trail or take just a few hours to experience some of the trails. The trail allows you to take in all the island’s coastal areas in one fell swoop. The trail is well-marked along the route, making it easy for even beginner hikers to set out. Ærø is a great place to hike since it’s mostly flat, especially around the coast, and you’re promised some incredible views. If you’re tired of being on 2-wheels, this is a great break from the bike.

Where to Eat

Ærøskøbing Røgeri

Ærøskøbing Røgeri was our favourite place to eat while we were in town. During the off-season and even on most weekends, many places close between 5-6pm. So we’d often pick up one of these meals to take back with us for a later dinner. The small restaurant serves smoked fish of all different varieties. Smoked fish is a local delicacy of the Danes and a must-try if you’ve never sampled it. You’ll smell that unique aroma of salt and fish when you walk inside. Try all their different side dishes, and don’t immediately go for the fries.

Cafe Aroma

If you’re looking for somewhere to eat in Aeroskobing, look no further than this absolutely adorable, colourful cafe. This cafe serves up some gourmet Danish treats made from local ingredients. Their charcuterie platters are great options if you want to try a variety of Danish delicacies. In the summer, the barbeque on the terrace is open and is a wonderful place to watch people while eating. If your hotel or guesthouse is in town, this cafe is also great for a morning cup of coffee. For dessert, don’t miss the apricot ice cream, a local specialty. The restaurant is closed for the winter season but is open again in the Spring.

Restaurant Mumm

An option for a fancy dinner in town is Restaurant Mumm. Reservations are recommended since it’s a popular joint, and there aren’t a lot of seats inside, especially during the busy summer season and on the weekends. But unlike Cafe Aroma, this restaurant is open all year long and even prides itself on having custom menus for each season, highlighting the different ingredients that time of year produces. The restaurant’s interior has a romantic candlelit atmosphere, while the terrace is overgrown with greenery and has a more laid-back feeling if that’s what you prefer. It’s definitely a pricer option, but if you’re looking to celebrate something special, this is the place for you.

Ærøskøbing Bageri Aps

I might be biased since I LOVE baked goods, but I think this is the best place to eat in Aero. This adorable little bakery serves tons of sweets inside a cozy red brick cafe, a converted 18th-century house. Ask the nice ladies inside what they recommend instead of just getting what’s familiar to you. They also sell fresh bread here, so grab a loaf and head to the grocery stores for a few other items to make yourself a stunning picnic!

Ristorante Pizzeria Badehotel Harmonien

If you want to try something other than Danish cooking, head down to the Pizzeria inside the Badehotel Harmonien hotel. This restaurant has a wood fire oven for freshly baked pizzas and is located along the waterfront. On warm summer evenings, you can eat alfresco with the sounds of the sea as the backdrop.

Glasseriet

In the summer, the Glasseriet serves up different flavours of Italian gelato inside a little gallery space featuring art and a variety of handblown glass objects. This unique blend of shops is great about this small town; they can do whatever they want.

Café Vaffelhuset

Located right up from the waterfront in Marstal, Café Vaffelhuset is a great place to cool down on a hot day. They sell delicious waffles topped with ice cream for only $6 US. During the summer, they have tables on the street so you can enjoy your dessert while watching people go by. So many people arrive on bikes, and it’s nice to watch them cruise by.

SuperBrugsen

The supermarket in Marstal is the largest on the island. Locals gather to shop for themselves, so it’s a great opportunity to see all the different foods offered at small-town Danish supermarkets. This store is open until 7pm, which is very late in Aero, so if you ever find yourself with nowhere to eat at 5pm because everything is closed, head down to the grocery store!

Den Gamle Vingaard

This little pub in Marstal feels like walking into an old farmhouse. There is various antique farming equipment hanging from the ceiling. Try the “fish of the day” with samsø potatoes and a special mustard sauce. This is the best way to get the freshest catch and maybe even try something you might never have eaten before.

Ærø is truly a rare gem, a secret escape even the Danes love to visit when they have time to explore their own country. There are various islands off the coast of Denmark, each with its unique characteristics. But my favourite has to be Ærø. There is a certain magic found here; along the azul-coloured coastlines or lush green hills. Place to find those quiet moments important to travel. In these quiet moments, you have a chance to reflect, absorb everything you’ve discovered, and make those discoveries a part of your soul and etched into your memory. I am counting the days till I can return here. This place where my heart found a stillness and peace. Something truly so hard to find in this busy, non-stop world. I hope you find it too.

We could hear our footsteps on the stones below and the wind in the trees. It wasn’t until the very end of the tour that we ran into another person. It was the perfect escape from the crowds below and more beautiful than we could have imagined.

Admission and Hours

The fee seemed steep at 1,000 yen ($10 USD), but we decided to plop down a few yen and were inside. 1,000 yen might look like a lot for a self-guided walk through an old garden, but it was some of the best money we spent on the trip! The gardens are open from 9 am to 5 pm.

Access

From Kyoto Station, take the Japan Railways (JR) Saiin Line to Saga Arashiyama Station. It is a fifteen-minute walk from there.

History

The Ōkōchi Sansō was once the estate of a famous Japanese actor Okochi Denjiro (1898-1962). He became a star at a young age. But instead of blowing the money on cars, drugs or clothes as young stars do now – he decided to build this monument to Japanese architecture. He built this villa and the gardens as an escape, and it was opened to the public after his death. Now, it offers the public the sense of escape it once offered him.

The buildings within the garden have been recorded as cultural properties by the national government. Most of them were constructed in the 1930s and 40s except for the Jibutsudō, an original structure from the Meiji Era that was moved from its original location to this site after Okochi Denjiro purchased it to save it from destruction.

Chūmon Gate

To set off on the walking tour of the gardens, one only has to follow the signs along the pathway. The thing you’ll pass by is the Chūmon. A Chūmon, or “intermediate gate”, is built to divide the outer and inner tea gardens. It is where the host would meet his guests as he invited them inside for tea. Stepping through the gate is like being welcomed home.

Daijōkaku

After passing through this gate, you come upon the main building in the compound, the Daijōkaku. This is where Denjiro Okochi’s bedroom used to be and where he would spend most of his free time when he wasn’t entertaining in the tea house. The house is known for being one of the best examples of traditional Japanese residential architecture. It combines many styles of Japanese architecture, such as shoin-zukuri and sukiya-zukuri.

Architecture

These architectural styles seem in direct opposition, one for large, opulent houses and the other, meaning literally, “a small space, simple and austere.” The shinden-zukuri was a style of architecture that flourished in the Heian period. These buildings faced south, were comprised of a single story and were raised off the ground with wooden pillars. There was no tatami flooring, and the roof was made with cypress shingles. The sukiya-zukuri architecture uses slender wood elements and the simplicity of ornamentation.

From the front of the Daijōkaku, you have a lovely view of the forest and the mountain to the south. But this view pales compared to the one you get at the top of the garden path. After taking in the view here for a bit, we headed back off on the trail.

Flora and Fauna

The upper portion of the trail shows off the garden’s flora and fauna. The garden was designed to highlight all the different seasons. So no matter when you visit, there is always something stunning. Unlike some gardens where they only have one season of truly spectacular foliage or flowers, this garden can be enjoyed throughout the year. In the spring, we have cherry blossoms, azaleas in the summer, Japanese maple trees for the fall, and pine trees for the winter months. Until this point in the trip, we hadn’t seen many autumn colours since it was fairly early. But here, trees were starting to change colour, and the orange and gold leaves glowed against the crystal blue sky.

The grounds themselves take up about 20,000 square meters, and the guest pathway only shows you a small portion of the villa. One can only imagine what treasures are hidden in this estate. You’ll discover Buddha statues, water features, sculptures hidden in Cyprus trees and rose bushes throughout the stone path.

Hozu River Gorge

At the top of the path, you’ll come to a lookout point where you can see the slopes of Mount Hiei, Mount Arashi and Mount Ogura and the Hozu River gorge. Wandering in the Bamboo forest, you can’t see out to the landscape around you, but from up here, we saw things we never even would have known were there!

Senkaku Senkoji

Hidden in the mountains, you can see a tiny temple poking its head out of the trees. This is the Senkaku Senkoji temple. Its iconic coloured flags make it stand out amongst the green trees.

There is a term in landscape architecture called “borrowed scenery,” which means: “to incorporate the background landscape into the design.” Walking through the winding cobblestones and twisting pathways, you can understand this design as the garden and the forest seem intertwined.

Jibutsudō

The Jibutsudō, with its Irimoya-style roof, is a Buddhist shrine which was moved from its original location to the villa in Arashiyama. Jibutsudōs are buildings from the Meiji Era that were made for rich noblemen to practice Buddism in the comfort of their own homes. A private place of worship.

Chashitsu

Along this path, you’ll also find the original Chashitsu. This small tea room was designed for intimate gatherings with typical tea room features like soft, sliding doors made of wooden lattice covered in translucent Japanese paper, tatami mats and subdued colours.

Moon Light Pavilion

In my opinion, the piece-de-resistance of the whole estate is the Moon Light Pavilion. This open-air building is at the highest point in the garden and gives you the best view of Kyoto, the forest and the mountains. All are framed under a simplistic Japanese gazebo. Sitting here, you’ll feel on top of the world. The landscape below looked like a rainbow from here, orange and yellow trees, green mountains and a bright blue sky.

Tea Room

After the moon pavilion, we headed back down the trail to finish our tour with a cup of tea. Near the exit is a new tea room built to serve tea to all the guests who still visit this site, keeping Okochi Denjiro’s tradition alive. Inside this building, you are seated and served a hot cup of matcha tea and a little sweet treat.

We took a seat towards the back of the room with a view of the bamboo forest behind us. Here, surrounded only by a few other visitors, we had a private viewing of the famous bamboo forests where hundreds of tourists were crammed inside only hours earlier.

The tea itself was a welcome treat. The warm liquid hit the spot on a sunny but chilly, windy day. The matcha is slightly bitter and is purposefully served with the sweet candy cake to balance out the flavour of the tea.

Tea Room Experience

We sat quietly in the tea room for as long as we felt welcome (we honestly could have been forever). I read my guidebook and planned our next destination; Dan changed his phone and relaxed in the silent chatter of the tea room. We listened to other families talking about their travels. Taking a moment to step back and appreciate where we were, what we had done and what adventures were around the corner.

We said “arigato” and bowed deeply to the servers as we left. On the way out, many people approached the gate and turned away once reading the admission price. We shook our heads and smiled at each other as we had just uncovered a secret only we would take away with us. Don’t make the same mistake those people did. Come inside and soak it all in.

Many people are dissuaded when they see that it’s a 30-minute to 1-hour hike uphill to where you’ll see the monkeys. They either can’t spare the time or can’t spare the energy. But let me tell you right now – it’s worth it…well worth it. If you’re coming all the way to Japan, don’t be put off by a little walk.

Access

The Iwatayama Monkey park is located right across from the Hozu River. It is marked with bright red torii gates sitting on the forest edge. The best way to access the park is from Hankyu Arashiyama Station. From here, it’s just a 5-minute walk up to the entrance. If arriving from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, the walk is only 15 minutes, and you get to see a lot of the village along the way.

Admission and Hours

The park is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from March to September and in the Fall and Winter from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The entrance fee for the park is 550 yen ($5 USD)

Ichitanimunakata Shrine

Before you approach the ticketing gate, stop at the Ichitanimunakata Shrine. This shrine is from the Taiho period (701-704) and may be one of the oldest shrines you see on your travels. There aren’t many signs or information about it, but it’s worth stopping to admire the ancient designs.

Tips for Interacting with the Monkeys

Next, you’ll turn and make your way to the ticketing booth. Here you pay the admission and hand over any bags the monkeys might be able to steal before heading up the mountain. Luckily our knapsacks were acceptable, and we could head right on up. After paying, you are handed cards with instructions on not interacting with the monkeys.

The Hike

I think it took us about 35 minutes after stopping a few times for some water. We were glad to have good walking shoes and something to drink with us since there were no places to get beverages until there was, of course, a vending machine at the top of the hill. As we climbed higher and higher, the landscape changed, trees became more sparse, and soon we heard the first call of a monkey somewhere off in the distance, hidden amongst the trees.

Although it wasn’t too warm when we hiked, on sunny days in the summer, it must get so hot on your way up, so the air conditioning room would, I’m sure, be an oasis in the tropical forest. There were also several fans (if you can believe it) stuck in the middle of the woods where you could take a break and get some cold air.

The View at the Top

As soon as we reached the top, over 160 meters above sea level, we were rewarded with an incredible view that overlooked what felt like the entire world. But in reality, the city of Arashiyama, Kyoto, the Kyoto mountains and the Hozu River. There were several binoculars to look down on the city from up here, but we were here to see the monkeys!

Japanese Macaques

The monkeys running around the top of this mountain are Japanese Macaques or “Snow Monkeys.” They get their name because snow covers the ground up in the mountains during the winter. No other nonhuman primate lives in a colder climate.

They were much bigger than I had previously imagined and cruised around the tourists like it was nothing. I did my best to avoid eye contact with them, quickly looking away if one happened to glance up at me.

Caretakers and anthropologists

Caretakers and anthropologists were stationed up there to look after the monkeys and ensure no one disobeyed the rules. They also track their habits, breeding and life span to learn more about these creatures and how to help their population all over Japan. It was a little scary to see such wild animals so close. They were free, and a few would get into screaming matches with each other – displaying strength and aggression toward the females.

After a little while, you got more comfortable with the animals because they didn’t seem interested in biting your head off. I watched them play, sleep and pick bugs off each other for a snack. Some seemed to have their own groups, and some kept to themselves. Just like us!

Feeding the Monkeys

Inside the small building at the top of the mountain are refreshments for humans and treats for the monkeys. You’re only allowed to feed them inside this fenced shed to ensure they’re not eating unauthorized food. We bought a few bags of peanuts and bananas and fed the greedy little monkeys. Each one of them fought over a few nuts. Their little hands and faces were so human-like. Watching them meticulously peel the peanuts was fascinating. It was a gentle reminder of how close we really are to them. After feeding the monkeys and taking a water break inside the bottle-proof shed, we headed back outside. We explored the upper and lower levels of the monkey viewing area.

Once you started to look, monkeys seemed to be hiding everywhere. I overheard one of the employees saying that there were over 200 monkeys in this area alone!

We took a moment on the bench to enjoy both the monkeys around us and the views of the city and the forest. Although the view of the city is stunning, the view of the lush, undisturbed forest was even more interesting. It was so dense and bright green. With so many monkeys up here, I could only imagine how many monkeys made that enormous forest their home.

Bamboo Groves of Arashiyama

Seeing as thousands of people visit the Bamboo Groves of Arashiyama every day, it was shocking to see such a small turnout of travellers here at the top of everything. We didn’t mind at all, though. More monkeys for us. We walked around a little more. Pointing out our favourite monkeys and skittering away from the bigger, scarier ones. Finally, we gathered our strength to make the journey back down the hill. The way down wasn’t as hard as the way up but seeing as we only had walking shoes (not hiking boots), some of the slipperier parts of the hill proved a little difficult. Nonetheless, we made it back down in one piece!

Although the hike and the time it will take might seem steep (both literally and figuratively) – this trek is worth the time and effort. You’ll rarely have unique opportunities to see such creatures so close up in the wild and get the incredible views the top of this mountain offers. Souvenirs and ice cream cones can be found all over Japan; this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Access

Enoshima is accessible by three train, each of which has its separate station. Depending on where you’re departing from will determine which line is best for your trip. If you’re departing from Tokyo the best options is the express train from Shinjuku station which will take you to Fujisawa station. From here you can board a local train to Katase Enoshima Station. One way tickets for this route costs 630 yen and takes around 65-75 minutes. If you’re planning on visiting Kamakura and other locations around the area, consider buying the Odakyu Railways Enoshima/Kamakura Free Pass which is 1470 yen and gives you unlimited use of trains between Fujisawa and Kamakura and Odakyu trains between Fujisawa and Enoshima.

The Legend of Enoshima

Understanding the legend which surrounds this island will help you understand the people and the history of this place.

There was once an evil dragon, with five heads, who settled in the bottomless swamp among the mountains of Fujisawa and tormented the people of the village. The peasants feared the dragon like no other as he would steal their children away in the middle of the night. Then, one day, an immense clouds enveloped the sea, and an earthquake erupted. From the clouds emerged a heavenly maiden, Benzaiten, and from the sea she brought with her an island, Enoshima Island. The dragon fell in love with the maiden and proposed to her but she refused him because of all the evil things he had done.

The dragon spent the next few years trying to mend his evil ways. He even turned himself into stone to show her how much he loved her. Eventually, the maiden forgave the dragon for the things he had done wrong and freed him from the stone mountain which had formed around him. After he was set free, they were married. Today the maiden Benzaiten still guards Enoshima along with the dragon, who now also protects the Islanders.

Beaches

If you’re visiting Japan in the summer, the city can get pretty warm so escaping to a beach might be just what you need on one of those hot, humid days. Enoshima has some of the best beaches close to Tokyo and although they can get crowded, arrive early to pitch your towel and relax on the sand all morning long. Japanese crowds are so polite and organized, even if it’s crowded when you arrive you’ll find it easy to squeeze in.

Should I get the Enoshima Day Pass?

The Enoshima Day Pass (separate from the Odakyu Railway Pass) costs 1000 yen and gives you access to the Samuel Cocking Garden, observation tower and the caves as well as the use of the escalators used to get up and down the island’s hills. You can always buy individual tickets for the escalators but they cost 300 yen each way. The gardens with observation access and the caves each cost 500 yen to enter so the pass pays for itself in those fees alone. But that’s only if you’re planning on visiting these two sites. If not, the pass isn’t worth it.

If you do end up with the pass and you’re feeling a little tired by the time you near the top, you’ll be able to ride the escalators free of charge! I still prefer the stairs myself but if you have a disability or just aren’t feeling up to it that day, the pass is definitely a good choice.

Dragon’s Gate

Walking from the train station towards the island, across the causeway, is one of my favourite parts of visiting the island. The pedestrian walkways towards the island is wonderfully decorated with statues and fantastically manicured gardens, framing the ascent to the island perfectly. As you approach, you’ll pass through the dragon-shaped stone lanterns which are the gatekeepers of the island. It’s amazing how different the landscape here is from Tokyo, you can smell the air blowing off the ocean.

Waterfront

The waterfront on Enoshima island on the north side is vastly different front the south, were the famed Iwaya caves are located. This part of the island has a steep drop off towards the waters looking out at Sagami Bay. There is a small park along the waterfront with a few dozen small sculptures to gaze at. This park is dedicated to both the Olympics, held here in 1964 as well as representations of the Goddess Benten whom the entire island is named after. I decided this was a great place to have a quick snack before my hike up the hill.

Nakamise Shopping Street

As you approached the staircase towards the first shrine you’ll pass under a large set of bronze torii gates. Behind these gates are dozens of souvenir shops and small restaurants. These are all run by locals and have an immense charm to them. So even if the items their selling don’t seem super bespoke to Enoshima, they are still a pleasure to browse inside.

Enoshima Torii Gates

At the end of Nakamise Street you’ll find yourself approaching the bright vermillion Torii gates, before Enoshima Shrine. These torii gates symbolise the passing from the mortal realm into the realm of the gods. As you pass through, try to clear your mind, and connect with yourself in a deep and meaningful way. I find that when travelling sometimes things are so busy and hectic and this moment is a reminder to reflect and remember instead of just go, go, go.

Zuishinmon

Past the torii gates is a large wooden tower, this is the ‘Zuishinmon Gate’. The design of the tower was based on a fairytale underwater palace called ‘Ryugujyo’. On the underside of the structure are carvings of peonies and lions on the walls and ceilings. These symbolize a prayer to protect the Goddess and their worshippers.

Benzaiten Goddess statue

Behind the tower gate you’ll meet face to face the Benzaiten goddess. Here she sits, carved in stone, nestled in with her follows, surrounded by the fabled dragon whom she defeated for the people. This statue was made in 1450 yet feels so fresh and new, despite its age.

Entering Enoshima Shrine

The Enoshima Shrine, is made up of three main buildings. The Hetsumiya, the Ho-an-den and the Nakatsumiya. Before entering any of the buildings, be sute to stop by the ‘temizuya‘. The temizuya or chōzuya is a Shinto water absolution pond for a ceremonial purification rite known as temizu. To perform the ritual, just fill the ladle provided with water and wash your left hand, then your right, and if you want, drink some of the water and spit it out to cleanse your mouth. If you’re scared to do it wrong, simply watch others and you’ll get the hang of it in no time. It feels nice to participate in this ritual as it connects you with the spiritual nature of the shrine itself.

Hetsumiya

The main building in one this level is the Hetsumiya. The original wooden building with a traditional copper winged roof, was built in 1620 by Minamono no Sanetomo, the third Shogun of Kamakura Shogunate. The current version was re-built in 1976 in the exact style as the original. Inside this buildings is where the Tagitsuhime-no-Mikoto are enshrined. The Tagitsuhime-no-Mikoto are three sister goddess who are known to control the seas, which feels so appropriate as you are surrounded by the sea on all sides on the island.

Inside the Shrine you’ll see a large metal box where you can make an offering. If you’ve never made an offering at a shrine before here is how you do it. Stand in front of the offertory box, throw a coin into the box, bow twice towards the shrine, then clap your hands twice and think deep in your mind of the wish you want to come true. Then, finish the ritual by bowing deeply towards the offertory box once more. A little wish for luck never hurt anyone and you can feel good that your money is going towards keeping the shrine up and running.

Chinowa

Beside the Hetsumiya you might be puzzled by a green ring standing off to the side. This is the chinowa, an object used to cleanse your mind and body as you pass through the ring. It is said to remove all your wrongdoings and impurities.

Ho-an-den

The Ho-an-den is a small, bright red, octagonal building where you can see the famous statue of the deity Benzaiten. This building costs 200 yen to enter and is the only shrine on the island which requires payment to enter. Unlike many other statues of the Benzaiten, this one is nude, sitting on a pedestal playing a biwa. Benzaiten is very important to women, as she is the only female deity of the seven gods of fortune. If you are really interested in the statue it’s worth visiting but I personally prefer the statue you see on your way up the stairs and had a better time admiring the fantastical exterior architecture of the building instead of going inside.

Ema

If you’re feeling unlucky in love, be sure to buy an ’ema’. An ema is wooden prayer plaque from the shrine where you can write your wish for love onto. Then hang it with the rest of the wishes, blowing gently in the wind atop the island. This shrine is fabled to be particularly good for matchmaking!

Nakatsunomiya Square

Before heading up to the next level, spend some time wondering around Nakatsunomiya Square. This little garden with a observation deck of the city below, is always full of seasonal blooms and if you’re lucky enough to visit during Cherry Blossom season, you’ll be in for a real treat. Since these trees and their blooms up here are perfectly hidden away from the crowds you have a much better chance of getting to experience Japan’s most popular symbol without fighting for space.

Nakatsunomiya Shrine

The second shrine site on the island is found just around the corner and up the hill from Enoshima Shrine. This is Nakatsunomiya, the oldest shrine on the island, established in 853 by the Buddhist monk En-nin. The frieze above the door to the shrine contains over 154 carvings of various real and mythological flora and fauna popular on the island. You could stand here for hours and never be able to find them all.

Samuel Cocking Garden

The Samuel Cocking Gardens were built in 1880 by British merchant Samuel Cocking. Cocking collected tropical plants from every corner of the world he travelled to but he settled in Japan after finding love on the island. Originally the Japanese government only allowed locals to purchase land but when the laws where changed, Cocking saw his chance to buy up some of the best real estate on the island.

After the couples passing, the title of the gardens was passed onto the city of Fujisawa who saw it’s reconstruction after the great earthquake. Today, you can explore a variety of flowers found not only in Japan but all over the world. From February to March there are 250 different breeds of camellia flowers blooming and from May to October dazzling crimson roses from Canada begin to blossom. My favourite part of the gardens was the dynamic landscaping. There were archways created with hanging baskets, gazebos surrounded in blooms and beautiful mazes you could wander in dazzling colours.

Enoshima Sea Candle

In the middle of the garden stands the giant 200 foot tall Enoshima Sea Candle. From the observation tower you can see all across Enoshima, Fujisawa and beyond. On a rare clear day, you have an absolutely stunning view of Mount Fuji. The Day I visited the Mountain was unfortunately still in hiding, but the view just down to the lush green gardens was incredible and well worth the money to come up the tower. I loved looking out across the brilliant blue seas. Living in a city not near an ocean, there is something truly mesmerizing to me about the ocean and I could have stared at it for hours.

Enoshima Daish

Past the Gardens, you’ll come upon the unmistakable Buddhist temple of Enoshima Daishi. During the Meiji Period, there was a governmental separation between Shintoism and Buddhism. Buddhist temples all over Japan were destroyed and it wasn’t until the 1990’s that Enoshima residents had the chance to rebuild one of their most important temples on the island, Enoshima Daishi. Standing in front of the steps into the temple are two huge, six-meter tall statues of Fudomyo, the protector of Buddhism. Staring up at them as you enter is an intimidating process and made me a little skittish when stepping down into the temple, but I guess that just means they’re doing their job.

Inside the temple, there is a blend of modern and traditional Japanese architecture. But what continues to stand the test of the time is the peaceful feeling you get when you come inside the incense soaked temple. There was a man praying when I came inside who later told me he had come all the way from Kyoto just to pray here today, and it made the temple’s significance all the more powerful to me.

Enoshima Pilgrimage Path

Descending down from the top of Enoshima is almost as much work as climbing up. It’s around 250 steps down to the bottom but the journey downwards provides so many different things to see along the way. This pathway is known as Oiwaya-michi or the Pilgrimage way. This pathway was taken by thousands of people over the year who made their way to the Iwaya Caves. Various houses found along the stairways are covered in beautiful seashells, a testament to the love of the sea which these residents have. As you descend, you’ll get amazing views of the cliff side and the sea below. One of the views to the left of the staircase is down to Yama-futatsu, a vallery where the mountain to the east and west connect.

Okutsunomiya Shrine

As you descend from the top of the island you’ll come upon the last of the shrines, this is Okutsunomiya Shrine or “Shrine of the Deep”. Inside this shrine it is said that the sea goddess rests during the winter inside a cave and when the summer returns, the goddess will emerge once more to protect the sea. The stone torri gate which welcomes you into the shrine is from 1138, a gift from the Shogun of Kamakura.

The two red lanterns on either side of the shrine depict Otohime (on the right) and Urashima Taro (on the left). Otohime is the princess of the undersea palace Ryūgū-jō and Urashima Tarō is the fabled fisherman who, after recusing a sea turtle, is rewarded for his good deed by being brought to the undersea palace. For this turtle was no ordinary turtle, he was the all-seeing turtle of the deep. The fisherman was entertained and cared for inside the undersea palace by the princess. If you look closely on the ceiling of the shrine, you’ll see the All-seeing turtle from the story. The turtle is also called the one who watches all directions, since no matter which direction you look, the turtle appears to be looking right at you!

Set beside the temple you’ll see a large stone surrounded by the paper lightning bolts which also are hung from torri gates. This stone is the Chikara-ishi. A Chikara-ishi is a “stone of strength” which are often seen at shrines as they represent the strength which the gods bestow upon their followers. This stone weighing 320kg, which is said to have been brought to the shrine by the most power man in the nation.

Wadatsumi-no-miya

Beside Okutsu-No-Miya-Jinja shrine you’ll find Wadatsumi-no-miya. Unlike the other shrines, this one is more like a rock cave, with a bright green dragon perched on top. This is Ryujin, the dragon god of the sea, and it is said that inside is where he is enshrined. You can peek your head inside the cave during the day through a small screen, and in the deep, dank dark, there was moment where I thought I saw a small pair of eye in the darkness…

Love Bell

A few steps up from the shrines, there is a small, overgrown trail which will lead you to a little hill with an incredible view of the ocean. Atop this hill stands the ‘Love Bell‘. Since the legend of Benten and the dragon falling in love with her is so important to the mythology of the island, this bell was purchased and placed here by local couples who wished to express their undying love for each other, much like the dragon and the goddess. Each of the donors had their names engraved on the structure surrounding the bell.

Every couple who now visits this site has their chance to ring the bell to announce their undying love to the dragon and maiden. Couples have begun leaving locks on the surrounding fence with the names engraved upon them. Every year the locks have to be removed so the fence does not collapse. So maybe the locks won’t last a lifetime, but hopefully, your love will.

Uonemotei

If I can suggest one place to eat on your tour of the island it HAS to be Uonemotei. This restaurant has been here for over 140 years. It has been serving locals and pilgrims alike delicious food, right from the sea. Sitting out on their patio you have a beautiful view of the ocean and can smell the refreshing sea breeze. The house special is the “Enoshima-don” which are young sardines served with turban shells and beaten eggs atop warm rice. This is the best thing you can eat to experience true Enoshima cuisine.

Iwaya caves

Unless you’re a HUGE fan of caves or have the Enoshima Day Pass, I would skip this. The reason being they are hugely touristy and crowded and you’ll have more fun exploring the rocky seaside around them instead. Inside the first cave you’ll find Buddhist statues, and in the second you’ll find a small pond dedicated to the dragon who used to terrorize the area. During the Nara era, Buddhist monks used to be trained here in the cave, so visiting the caves was somewhat of a pilgrimage for Buddhists all over the world. Overall though, it’s a pretty simple cave and your time and money is better spent elsewhere on the island unless you have the day pass.

Around the caves, you’ll see dozens of little reefs where local fisherman are almost always camped you trying to get the catch of the day. I had a relaxing time sitting out on the rocks, near where the waves would crash against the rocks, getting sprayed every time a huge wave would come in.

Ferry Boat

To head back to the train station, I recommend taking a ferry boat ride. Throughout the day there are little ferry boats which run back and forth from the mainland to the island. Head over to the Bentenmaru pier where you can board one of the little boats. The ride isn’t very long but seeing the island from the water is a very unique perspective that gives you an idea of the scope and size of Enoshima. It’s a great opportunity to step back, literally, and see the place you just came from from afar. Look right up high and you can see the top of the Enoshima Candle and the Enoshima flag which flies high above.

Enoshima is truly one of the best place to go to take a break from the city and get a breath of FRESH air. If you have even half a day, or better yet a whole day, you NEED to make your way out here and experience another side of life in Japan.
