Cinema Lucerna

We were exhausted on our last trip to Prague and wanted to opt for a relaxed evening indoors. We were lucky to find Cinema Lucerna, next to the famous Wenceslas Square. Cinema Lucerna in Prague is one of the city’s oldest and most iconic cinemas, steeped in history and charm. Located within the grand Lucerna Palace, a beautiful Art Nouveau building in the heart of Prague, this cinema offers a unique and nostalgic movie-going experience.

History of Cinema Lucerna

Opened in 1909, Cinema Lucerna has retained much of its original splendour, with ornate decor, intricate mouldings, and a classic ambiance that transports visitors back to the early 20th century. The main screening room is particularly stunning, featuring a large, curved screen, plush red seating, and an elegant ceiling adorned with decorative elements.

Cinema Lucerna is not just a place to watch movies; it’s a cultural landmark. It hosts various events, including film festivals, special screenings, and premieres, making it a hub for film enthusiasts. The programming is diverse, offering a mix of contemporary films, independent cinema, and classic movies, often in their original languages with Czech subtitles.

The Theatre Screening Rooms

Cinema Lucerna in Prague features two screening theatres, each offering a distinct experience.

The Main Hall is the grand, historic theatre showcasing the cinema’s rich heritage. It is known for its stunning Art Nouveau architecture, including ornate decorations, a large curved screen, and a capacity of around 453 seats. The atmosphere in this hall is reminiscent of the early 20th century, making it a favourite for those looking to experience cinema in a classic, elegant setting.

The Small Hall: This more intimate, modern theatre is designed for smaller audiences and has a cozier atmosphere, with about 51 seats. It’s perfect for independent films, documentaries, and special screenings. If you have your heart set on the beautiful main hall theatre, check the tickets and screening information to avoid disappointment.

Cinema Lucerna Prices

Cinema Lucerna in Prague offers a range of ticket prices depending on the type of screening. Generally, standard movie tickets cost around 160 to 210 CZK (approximately $7 to $9 USD). For special screenings or events, prices may vary and could be higher.

The cinema also hosts various cultural events, such as live broadcasts of opera or ballet performances, which may have different pricing. Tickets for these events can range from 250 to 350 CZK (around $11 to $15 USD), depending on the specific show and seating options.

About the Movie Showings

New releases were playing in the theatre in both English and Czech. In addition to new releases, this spot also features classic films, and we went to see the sci-fi thriller, “Aliens.”

Cinema Lucerna is the perfect spot for a late-night outing if you’re like us and not really into the bar or club scene. Whether you’re a movie buff or want to soak in some of Prague’s rich history, this iconic cinema is worth visiting.
