Japanese curry is unlike any other curry we’ve tried before. Despite its British origins, it’s not like Thai, Indian, or even English curries. The British first introduced Japanese curry to the country during the Meiji era (1868–1912). It was easy to prepare since the main ingredients didn’t require refrigeration. However, curry didn’t gain popularity until the late 1960s. Over time, the Japanese customized the dish, changing the ingredients to make it uniquely Japanese.

Japanese curry is more like a European stew. Start by making a roux (cooking flour and butter), then add a meat stock to deepen the flavour. After cooking it for hours, you end up with a thick, dark brown sauce, almost like a meat gravy. This rich elixir is garnished on Japanese rice with your favourite toppings.

Curry’s Rise in Popularity

Curry only gained widespread popularity in the 1920s after it became available nationwide as an “instant” mix. Housewives could cook curry using pre-made dried cubes, rehydrate them at home, and add leftover proteins and veggies. As more households embraced curry, its presence in restaurants increased, eventually becoming a home and restaurant dining staple.

Spices are also crucial in creating authentic Japanese curry. In summer, Japanese people eat hot and spicy food to cool down by sweating. So you’ll see people enjoying hot and spicy curry morning, noon, and night—regardless of the weather.

The Best Place for Curry: Coco Curry Ichibanya

In my opinion, the best place to satisfy your curry cravings is Coco Curry Ichibanya! This restaurant has been one of Japan’s favourite curry chains since 1978. When you enter, a friendly host will seat you at a table. They offer a full menu in English and other languages in larger cities, making it easy to spot to make your first Japanese Curry order.

While you can always select one of their pre-determined curry combos, I like customizing my order. The first step is choosing your curry sauce; you can select from pork, beef, or hashed beef. Next, you choose your rice portion, and if you opt for a small one (200 grams), you’ll save about a dollar on your order. Then, you choose your spice level, ranging from 1 to 10. Even levels 2 to 3 are intense, but different locations vary in their spice application, so it’s always a bit of a gamble. If you love spice, take the risk; stick to level one (or zero) if you prefer something milder. The last option is to customize your toppings. Options include fried cutlets, shrimp, sausages, vegetables, cheese, kimchi, and garlic. Each item is priced clearly next to the ingredient.

I usually ordered pork curry with chicken cutlets, mushrooms, cheese, and garlic bits! Alongside the curry is a dish of pickles, known as tsukemono, which creates harmony in the meal and counteracts the heaviness of the rich ingredients. They’re the ultimate umami package, and the vinegar helps cut the fatty richness of the dish.

Minamoto no Yoritomo

Shogunate Minamoto no Yoritomo was the founder of the Kamakura. When he became Shogunate, his first task was to move the captial of Japan from Kyoto to his home in Kamakura. Kamakura was previously a simple fishing village. When it became the capital they essentially had a fresh space to create a capital city. The second task Minamoto did was to move the Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū shrine to Kamakura from its previous location in Zaimokuza.

Hachiman

The Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū shrine is dedicated to the god Hachiman. Hachiman is the divine protector of Japan. He is known as the “god of martial arts” as he was the great patron deity of the samurai. Moving the temple of Hachiman also meant moving the nation’s best warriors to reside in the new location in order to protect this new government.

The name “Hachiman” means “eight banners.” Emperor Ōjin is the divine spirit of the deity Hachiman, and it is the legend that when he was born, eight heavenly banners flew through the sky, carried by doves, to signal his birth. You will find images of doves used as talismans in reference to Emperor Ōjin.

Genpei Ponds

Walking up to the shrine, the first thing which greets you is a large red torii gate. Opposite the red torii gate is a low-lying stone bridge that crosses two ponds on either side. The two Genpei ponds represent the Minamoto clan on the left and the Taira clan on the right. The Taira clan was the bitter rival of Shogun Minamoto. On the left side which is in honour of the Minamoto clan, the pond has three little islands. The number three in Japan symbolizes birth. The pond on the right, on the other hand, has four islands. The number four represents death, corresponding with the pond associated with the rival clan. Perhaps used as an omen and warning to those who come to the shrine with cruel intentions.

Living inside the pond are many different coloured koi fish and cute softshell turtles. There are lots of waterfowl too, creating a constant flurry of activity in the trees and water. In the summertime, the entirety of the water’s surface is blooming with lotus flowers and is such a sight to see!

Feng Shui Layout

Because the new Shogun had complete control of his new captial city’s design, he wanted to ensure that it was built with Feng Shui in mind.
Feng Shui is a Chinese principle that focuses on the natural forces on earth. The idea is that these forces can be harmonized and controlled to create power and good fortune. One way this is done is by the orientation of building around these invisible forces. Many principles of Feng Shui were kept in mind when designing the layout of the shrine. They had consulted the royal diviner who chose this place as it had a mountain to the north, a river to the east, a great road to the west and an opening to the south.

Taiko Bridge

Walking up towards the first bridge might find that both sides of the larger stone bridge are closed off by a red gate. This is because this bridge was reserved for the Shogunate only. The common folk needed to use a flatter bridge on either side to access the shrine. Despite the fact that the shogun of Kamakura is long dead the tradition remains as a memory to him. To the left of the shogun bridge, stands an ancient plum pine tree.

Hataage Benzaiten Shrine

After crossing the bridge, walk out onto the pond towards the Hataage Benzaiten Shrine. This can be found to the right of the entrance. A series of white flags mark this shrine. Each of these flags is a prayer left by visitors. If you wish to purchase your own flag to leave on the island you can purchase one near the shrine. If you have google translate downloaded on your phone you can use this to help translate some of the prayers left behind. Like a wave of wishes blowing in the wind.

Archery Track

As you continue down the complex, you’ll see a large crossing on either side of you. This is the ancient archery track. This was where the traditional Yabusame Shinto ritual would take place. This Shinto ritual would occur once a year. All the best samurai would come here to compete against each other for the glory of the shogun. They would mount their hoses and attempt to shoot three targets while riding at full speed down the track.

The event was started when the new Shogun realized that his archers lacked skills with their bow. He thought this would give them a good incentive to practice. Even today, a festival is held yearly in the fall where people dress in costume and perform the ritual just the great samurai would have years ago.

Maiden

The building at the base of the stairs is called the Maiden or Shimoden. The most famous woman in Japanese history and literature was a Shizuka Gozen or Lady Shizuka. She was a court dancer and mistress of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Shizuka Gozen devoted herself to Minamoto and would dance for him with a passion that would entrance all those who watched. Famously, she would come here to perform some of her most memorable productions. Today, the Maiden is still a popular spot for dances and musical performances. As well as weddings and festivals which are held here throughout the year.

Every morning at the Maiden, people gather to offer rice, sake, vegetables, fruits, and other offerings to Hachiman. Locals come to pray for the prosperity of the Imperial Family and the nation. This ritual is called onikkusai.

In addition to paying your respects to Hachiman okami, you can also come to pray for the safety of your family and the health of your body.

Sake Rice Baskets

Off to the left of the Maiden, you’ll see a large structure filled with giant sake barrels. Different sake producers will donate large sums of money to the shrines in order to ensure good fortune for their companies. These barrels are only ceremonial and do not contain any real sake but they are still such a beautiful thing to look at.

Shirahata Shrine

On the eastern side of the lower level, you will find the Shirahata Shrine, also called the Junior Shrine. This is where the spirit of Minamoto Yoritomo and Minamoto Sanetomo are enshrined. The dark wood of the shrine is painted black and embellished with gold trim. Many people come to this shrine to pray for victory in honour of the great shogun.

Masako stone

Right beside the shrine, you’ll find the Masako stones. When you pour water on the rocks, an image of a turtle or a crane will appear. Both the crane and the turtle represent longevity as it is fabled that cranes and turtles have life spans of thousands of years. Pour some water on the rocks to pray for some life longevity for yourself!

Soreisha

On the western side of the complex, you’ll find this old, seemingly forgotten building. This is the Soreisha, the shrine dedicated to the ancestor spirits. Many people seem to miss this building and it is one of the most peaceful areas of the place. It is a newer shrine, erected in 1949. The spirits which are said to reside here are thought to protect the land and people come here to pray for their own protection.

Ginko Tree

The staircase leading to the main shrine is flanked on either side by two trees. But you might notice that the one on the left is significantly smaller. This was once where a great ginkgo tree once stood for over 1000 years. It was a precious treasure of the nation and a holy place for pilgrims.

In March 2010, a huge storm came through and uprooted the tree. Although great efforts were made to replant it, the tree could not be saved in its entirety. Because the tree was so important, the trunk was replanted in the hopes it would reproduce leaves (which it since has). Other cuttings were also replanted, and they have even begun to multiply and regrown.

The tree was said to have played a large part in the assassination of shōgun Minamoto no Sanetomo in 1219. The assassin, his nephew, hid in the tree as his uncle was leaving the shrine. When he walked down the stairs, his nephew jumped from the tree and attacked. He thought this act would enable him to become the next Shogun, but the public didn’t support his succession, and instead, he was beheaded the same day for his actions.

Stairway

The large stairway leading up to the main shrine contains 61 steps. 61 in an interesting number as it is thought to be unlucky. Perhaps the uprooting of the tree and the assassination were both brought about by the unlucky omens of the stairs.

Main Shrine Jugo

As you climb the stairs, you pass through the Sakura Gate to enter the main shrine, the Jogu. This building was recently renovated in the 21st century when the previously plain wood was repainted in this bright vermillion. The main shrine enshrines Emperor Ojin, Himegami and Empress Jingu.

On the front of the shrine is a black sign with gold lettering. The Japanese character at the top represents a dove which is the messenger used by the deity Hachiman.

Gingko Emas

At most shrines you can buy an ema, a wood plaque, to leave your prayers on. The emas at this shrine are printed with the image of the great ginkgo tree.

You can also get yourself a souvenir omikuji or random paper fortune outside the shrine. You can get on here for 200 yen that comes with your fateful prediction as well as a dove charm in honour of the deity Hachiman. When you open the fortune, should it be unlucky, fold the paper in a thin strip and place it inside the nearby “bad luck box.” Place your hand around the arrow above the box as this is said to help remove the bad luck.

Treasure Hall

The main shrine is separated into three areas, the main sanctuary, the treasure hall and the worship hall, each connected through long hallways. The Treasure Hall is located on the west side of the main sancutary and contains sacred items from the history of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. This is the only part of the temple complex which requires admission (200 yen).

Inside, you can find such things as samurai swords from the 18th century, black lacquer arrows, 19th-century bows and quivers, and a series of ceremonial kimonos.

Maruyama Inari Shrine

On the western side of the Jogu, you will find the Senior Shrine, the Maruyama Inari Shrine. This is the oldest remaining shrine on the grounds. Standing guard outside this part of the shrine we find the Inari who are kami foxes. Kami are Japanese spirits. The fox spirits are thought to bring fertility to the land and are often seen as the spirits of agriculture.

To the right of the shrine, you’ll find a series of torii gates. Walking down the hillside through the torii gates will lead you back down to the lower level. The flags which appear in front of the torii gates have been purchased by those who pray for prosperity in their businesses. These are often the most costly prayers and only large companies are featured here.

Before leaving, take a seat in the rest area just opposite the large pond. During certain times of the year, purple wisteria grows all over the canopy. This beautiful scene is the perfect place to end your time at the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine.

Dankazura

As you start to head back to the train station, we walk down the pedestrian walkway or dankazura. The Dankazura is a stunning alley flanked on either side by beautiful sakura trees and brightly coloured flower gardens.

Ni no Torii

At the end of the alley, you come to the Ni no Torii, the final torii gate. On either side of this torii gate are two large guardian lion-dogs. The one on the left has its mouth open forming the Sanskrit letter “A”. On the other hand, the one right has its mouth closed forming the sound of the Sanskrit letter “MA”. Together the lions are attempting to sound out “Aum” which is a sacred sound and mantra practiced in Buddhism.

This outer market grew up around the Tsukiji Fish Market. It supported the local and tourist populations gathering in this part of Tokyo. The narrow streets and alleys around the market housed some of the best casual restaurants and tiny street food vendors that served fish straight from the market. What is the Tsukiji Outer Market?

The outer market is where you’ll find over 400 shops, grocers and small restaurants, crowded into only a few narrow alleys around what was once the largest fish market in Tokyo. The streets of the outer market explode with colour and excitement. Vendors yell at each other and passers-by 24/7, making the place feel full of life even in the very early hours of the morning.

Access

The Tsukiji Outer Market can be easily reached by foot from either Tsukiji Shijo Station on the Oedo Line or Tsukiji Station on the Hibiya Line. Shimbashi Station is the closest option for those using JR trains, with a 20-minute walk to the market.

Fresh Sushi

The outer market is the perfect spot to grab a bit of breakfast. Find a sushi bar with a bunch of old locals eating inside. Those with a line out of the door are always a surefire way to spot a good spot. While they might not have door-to-door access to fresh fish as before, they still bring in the same selection, just from a little further afield.

Tsukiji Itadori Bekkan

Tsukiji Itadori Bekkan is one of the most popular spots in the outer market to find the best sushi and sashimi. It’s made to order, so you know it’s super fresh. It’s definitely on the more expensive side but well worth the price. The seasonal selection by the chef with 10 pieces of sushi and a roll will run you 5100 yen. They also have a Nagomi plate with seven pieces of shish and a roll for 3600. 

Maguro / Tuna 

Tuna is one of the most important fish sold at the fish market. One of the most popular tourist attractions at the new market is the Tuna auction. Early morning risers head to the market at the crack of dawn to witness the bidding wars that break out over the best pieces of fish caught that day. To see what all the fuss is about, you should make a point to seek out some fresh Maguro (tuna) served up on sushi or as sashimi. There are often variety plates that feature different varieties such as bluefin, fatty, medium fatty and regular tuna. A great way to see which is your favourite, so you know what to order next time. These can be expensive as tuna isn’t cheap, so expect to pay upwards of 3000 yen for a multi-piece tray.

Kaisendon

A traditional breakfast dish eaten in Japan is Kaisendon. Kaisendon is a traditional Japanese dish consisting of a bowl of rice (“donburi”) topped with a variety of raw, fresh seafood (“kaizen”) known as sashimi. These can be found throughout the market, and every shop has its own unique take on the dish. You’ll always be served a variety of fish, everything from fatty tuna, shrimp, egg and other fresh daily fish selections. Bowls range from 1500 to 3000 yen.

Grilled Scallops & Fresh Oysters

If you’re a seafood connoisseur and want the best of the best, plenty of shops here will be right up your alley. One of the most popular street foods in the Outer Market is fresh grilled scallops cooked over a charcoal flame. Thanks to the grilling, they have the most delicious flavour, which balances the sweetness of the scallop perfectly. These will run you about 1000 yen.

Another delight of the market is these larger-than-life oysters. They are absolutely oversized but nevertheless delicious. They taste clean and fresh and cost you about 700-800 yen.

Tamagoyaki 

Plenty is more on offer if you’re not in the mood for fresh fish. Tamagoyaki is rolled-up, freshly made Japanese-style omelettes. They are super cheap at only 100 yen and a delicious way to start the day or just as a mid-afternoon snack. An entire slab of tamagoyaki runs about 500 – 800 yen, depending on if there are any additional ingredients. Great to share with friends.

Fresh Fruit

Tsukiji has always had a wide selection of fresh fruit vendors selling some of the best produce in the city. Is there anything more precious than the delicately wrapped fruits of Japan? I think not. Highly recommend, especially when in season, the strawberries. Japan is well known for its perfectly grown strawberries. And while they might seem pricey, they are spectacular. They even sell white strawberries which are super unique and even more delicious. A bowl of fresh strawberries generally costs about 500 yen for a selection.

Uni

One of the most uniquely Japanese delicacies has got to be fresh uni. Uni, or sea urchin, is the edible portion of the inside of spiny sea urchins. The taste is unrivalled. It’s almost buttery, with a sea-like flavour. I love it, and getting it fresh from the market is one of the best places to try it. They serve it on its own in various spots in Tsukiji and on sushi rice if you prefer to try it with a little bit of rice. Uni is a little pricey, a bowl of pure uni will run you about 1500 yen, but a single piece of uni sushi will be much less expensive.

Waygu

Another food item that many people coming to Japan might be looking for is Waygu beef. Wagyu is the classification given to four different Japanese breeds of beef cattle. It is widely known for being the most tender, delicious beef you can eat. In the Tsukiji market, you’ll see lots of stands selling sticks of Wagyu beef. Some shops sell thinner slices of beef you can pick out, and they cook it right before you. Overall, I prefer to have my Waygu in a restaurant. But if this is your only opportunity to try it, you can always pick out a small slice to ensure you try this pedigree cut of beef at least once!

Unagi

Another traditional dish served in the market is Unagi. Unagi is freshly grilled eel, slathered in a thick, sweet and savoury sauce which is carmelized over the fish as it cooks over a hot grill. You can find sticks of Unagi for around 300 yen. If you’ve never had Unagi, this is a great opportunity to try it out!

Ice Cream

If you’re in the mood for desserts, soft-serve ice cream will always be on offer all over the outer market. Dozens of different flavours to choose from spill out along the streets. Vendors are ready to give a sweet treat to anyone walking by, even on colder days.

Daifuku Mochi

Mochi is one of my favourite Japanese sweets. Mochi is made from pounding sweet rice flour into a gummy texture wrapped around different fillings like macha or sweet red bean paste. In the Tsukiji Market, you can find mochi topped with a fresh red or white strawberry that amps the flavour up to 100!

Shopping

Knife Shops

The Tsukiji Outer market is home to many stores selling specialty chef and kitchen utensils. Most of these were opened to be geared toward sushi chefs preparing their fish. But today, they are a little more broad and open to everyone. Inside you’ll find professional-grade knives. Japanese knives are known as some of the best in the world, and if you’re looking for an upgrade to your kitchen collection, this is such a wonderful souvenir to treat yourself to. Something you will use for the rest of your life.

Ceramics

The ceramics in the market were my favourite thing to pursue. They were so inexpensive, but the designs were incredible. The vibrant colours and intricate paintings were handmade, each a little different from the next. I would pick out my favourite patterns from each shop and, at the end of the day, have a little collection of four perfectly mismatched, but that’s what makes it so charming.

Spices & Dried Goods

Tsukiji is also a wonderful place to shop for spices and dried goods. One of the best things to look for is homemade Furikake. Furikake is a dry Japanese condiment made from green and nori seaweed flakes. In addition to the seaweed, there are a variety of additional ingredients added for the various flavours, from sesame seeds, fish flakes, spices and more. Furikake is used to sprinkle on top of rice, veggies, and anything you like. But the ones made fresh from the market are even more special and a great gift to bring home.

Namiyoke Inari Shrine

While in the market, you should definitely make a visit to the small Namiyoke Inari Shrine. This shrine was the guardian of the marketplace and its traders when the old fish market was here. The name means “protection from waves,” which is very suitable for all the fishermen who pass by daily. Although the fisherman has moved, the shrine remains. The courtyard is dotted with various memorial plaques and carvings donated by trade groups in the marketplace. An excellent way to bring happiness and prosperity to the traders.

One of the greatest things to do while walking around the Tsukiji Outer Market is exploring. Get lost, and you’ll always discover something fantastic. The smells from each alleyway changes from street to street. Sweet, sour, fishy, spicy and pungent. A feast for the senses. 

The greatest thing about this place is that after the exodus of the Fish market, the area became a little more local. Sure, it’s still immensely popular with tourists, but it’s equally just a spot for locals to grab something to eat on their way to work. You’ll pass hundreds of people on their way to grab a snack before they get on the train or mothers pushing prams trying to do their morning shopping.

I love watching locals doing their thing, living in their city, and experiencing the environments the way they were supposed to be experienced. Not as guests, as settlers.

The outer market is busy, loud and unmissable. Make sure you carve out time in your next trip to Tokyo to explore and eat all there is on offer!

My favourite places to shop when travelling are stores that have a history. A rich tapestry of time that makes everything they sell so important! Most of these businesses have been open for multiple generations and represent the best of that country. Things which people have come to love for years and years, so you know it’s the good stuff! It is like taking a piece of history home with you! So come with us now to discover my favourite Historic Shops and the souvenirs to buy which are so much more interesting for your friends and family than any beard oil or robe will ever be! Many of these shops have online stores so even if you’re not travelling there directly, you can still buy something really special for Christmas.

Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy | Florence, Italy

Stepping into the Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy is about as close to going back in time as you’ll get. The old shop in Florence prides itself on being the world’s oldest pharmacy, which opened in 1221! Back then, there was a small Dominican Order who lived in the connecting Church of Santa Maria Novella. Like many orders of monks, they had their own herb gardens where they grew a variety of medicinal plants. Using these plans, the monks created herbal concoctions and started selling them to the public. Their treatments actually worked for minor, everyday nuisances like stomach pains and headaches. Even today, many people still use herbal treatments to help with their body ailments. But also created from these herbs and fresh flowers were sensational (literally) perfumes.

The Perfumerie

In 1612 an official retail operation was opened where they began selling items aside from medicine. Everything from perfume to potpourri and other toiletries could be created from their ancient garden. Today, you can still purchase the very same perfumes as medieval Florentines wore back in 1621! The Acqua della Regina scent uses the same recipe the Dominican monks made in 1533 for Caterina de Medici. Caterina de Medici commissioned the perfume when she married Enrico di Valois and moved to France. The fresh citrus bouquet helped remind her of home when she was far away. And as we all know, smell is perhaps the best wall to recall a memory.

Angeli di Firenze is a more recent fragrance inspired by the Florentine people. The “Angels of Florence” were a group of young people who came to the aid of the entire city after a devastating flood in 1966. The banks of the Arno river broke, flooding the city. But the flooding was not just water, but thick destructive mud. Some areas were entrenched up to 22 feet deep. Museums, churches and other historic sites were on the brink of losing precious relics, but these young people worked 24 hours a day to ensure they saved all that needed to be rescued. The fragrance was created on the 40th anniversary of the flood and contains a bouquet of sweet, fruity notes. A polar opposite to those muddy smells the workers must have experienced. I wear this perfume anytime I want to feel like a hero!

Livraria Bertrand | Lisbon, Portugal

Inside the blue Azulejo tiled building in the centre of Lisbon, hides the oldest bookstore in the world! Opened in 1732, in the shopping district of Chiado, Livraria Bertrand welcomed people into their store to browse their incredible selection of books. Sadly, their original store was destroyed in 1755 during a devastating earthquake. They had to move out temporarily but were able to move back into their original location in 1773. It only took them 20 years to restore the store back to its former glory!

For over a hundred years, this place has been a favourite hangout of Portuguese writers. Walking inside, you feel like you’re entering an ancient cave. Look up to admire the ancient brick vaults and arched ceilings. Although most of the books they carry here are in Portuguese, they also have a small English section with popular titles. If you buy a book at the store, they will give you a sticker to place inside the book to show that you purchased it at the oldest bookstore in the world.

Even if you don’t want to buy a book, there is a cute little cafe at the back of the shop where you can sit inside and enjoy looking at all the pretty titles stacked on tall wooden shelves. Bookstores and libraries are some of the most peaceful places in the world and are the best place to come for a bit of downtime amid busy travel days.

Pfunds Molkerei | Dresden, Germany

I’ve been singing the praises of Dresden ever since my first visit! It was such a surprising town and the discovery of this place was just one of the many joyful stops we made along the way. Pfunds Molkieri, covered floor to ceiling in the most incredible tiles and Meissen porcelain, is the oldest dairy shop in East Germany. It was built back in 1879 and was the first place where Germans could buy high-quality, concentrated milk. Although the dairy was mostly destroyed in WWII, the family made sure to rebuild in the exact same fashion as the original. Now, visitors can come to see and taste the extraordinary delicacies inside Pfunds Molkieri. 

Guests can try different kinds of milk and cheeses from farms across Germany. Bringing home cheese as a gift for a loved one might prove pretty difficult. Not only does it requires refrigeration but most international countries will not allow you to bring in dairy products through customs. Luckily, Pfunds Molkieri also carries a wonderful selection of milk soaps made from that same famous herd of German cows. Milk soaps are gentle on the skin, a natural exfoliant, help prevent acne and are rich in nutrients! A wonderful stocking stuffer for your Christmas morning.

Maiasmokk | Tallinn, Estonia

Located in the historic quarter of Tallinn, Maiasmokk (which means ‘Sweet tooth‘) is the oldest café in Estonia. The regal cafe has been in operation since 1864. Inside, the interior feels so sumptuous. Like having a coffee in Versaille! The intricate ornate mirrored ceiling reflects the gorgeous old tiled floors, and rich wooden furnishings. The cafe is a true slice of history as it has remained unchanged for almost a century.

While Maiasmokk serves all the coffees and teas you’d expect, its most popular item is marzipan. The cafe even features a museum dedicated to the history of marzipan. In the 19th century, this was where the Russian Imperial family came to get their marzipan. The almond-based sugary treat lasts forever, making it a great gift to bring home!

Tsuen Tea | Uji, Japan

When you think of Japan, one of the first things that you might think of is a cup of green tea. And in Uji, Japan (just outside Kyoto), you can visit the world’s oldest tea shop, Tsuen Tea. Tsuen Tea opened here in 1160, although the building which you can visit today is a later construction from 1672.

The Tsuen family were descendants of a great samurai who was the guardian of the ancient Uji Bridge. The family lived adjacent to the bridge and opened a small tea shop next door where they would greet travellers. And serve them tea. Inside the Edo period shop, you can still see ceramic tea jars that are several hundred years old sitting along the shelves. Be sure to pay your respects to the old Tsuen samurai, whose wooden statues still stands proudly inside on display.

Legatoria Piazzesi | Venice, Italy

Tucked away in on the Campiello Feltrina San Marco is Venice‘s oldest paper shop; Legatoria Piazzesi. This old stationary shop has been making paper-based wonders since 1851. It is still in operation today and offers onsite book-binding services as well as hand-printed sheets of ornamented paper. The ornate handmade papers are so beautiful they could simply be placed in a frame as they look like a work of art. But even better, they can be used by intrepid journalists and scrapbookers.

The owners are pretty strict, and this is a place where you should only enter if you intend to buy something. For those who just prefer to browse, stick to peeking in the windows. They always have lovely displays of their bookbinding, and you can usually poke your head inside the door to at least check out the stock of papers overflowing from all the shelves. This isn’t done out of malice. Handmade paper is super delicate, and now that the shop is somewhat of a tourist destination, they don’t want any overcrowding. The store is tiny and their products can easily be damaged.

Il Marmoraro | Rome, Italy

All along Via Margutta you might spot unique stone signs to mark the various restaurants and shops along the street. These are all created inside Il Marmoraro. The owners have been here making custom-made signs for over 60 years! But the tradition of these stone signs dates back hundreds of years. In ancient Rome, legislative acts were written on bronze tablets and then displayed on Capitol Hill. These old tablets had a very distinct ancient roman style script. This became the defacto “font” used in Rome. It went to be inscribed on stone columns, gravestones and even street sights. And today, Il Marmoraro keeps up the tradition, still making signs using that ancient hand-carved typography.

The owner doesn’t speak much English but happily greets everyone who comes into the shop with a smile. For only €15, he will make you a custom sign in the same style as the ancient ones. You can have pretty much anything written upon as long as it’s not too many characters. If you arrive early, your personalized stone tablet will be ready for you before the end of day!

Caza das Vellas Loreto | Lisbon, Portugal

Happening upon the Caza das Vellas Loreto while in Lisbon was one of the highlights of my trip. My eyes were drawn to the curiously shaped vibrant candles in the window and I poked my head inside. The tiny shop feels like stepping into an old wardrobe. The entire place is only three meters wide! But stuffed within the glass cabinets lining the walls are colourful stacks of wax candles. Above the cashier at the back of the shop is a large golden set of numbers with the date 1789 written upon it. That is the date when the shop first opened. And they’ve been doing things almost the very same way ever since.

In addition to the multitude of tapered candles, they also have seasonal designs to delight their customers. Their Christmas collection is a personal favourite and a wonderful way to add some unique flair to your dining table. And since the candles only cost a few euros, apiece it’s a great gift to buy for your friends and family.

À la Mère de Famille | Paris, France

The world’s oldest chocolate shop stands on the cusp of the famous Montmartre neighbourhood in Paris. A la Mère de Famille opened in 1761 by Pierre-Jean Bernard. The gold lettering outside the shop shines in the sunlight and beckons visitors from down the road. The stunning typography, against that beautiful bright green paint, has stood the test of time and still looks like a gem in the centre of the neighbourhood.

Today there are 12 other branches of the chocolate store across the city, but this is the only one you should seek! It is by far the most beautiful, with its antique shelves still stacked with vintage jars and lovely old brass fittings that have barely changed in 260 years. One of the best times to visit the shop is during the holidays when the chocolatiers develop unique sweet creations to delight and devour.

The Oldest Sweet Shop | Pateley Bridge, England

There are some places whose name says it all, and the Original Old Sweet Shop in Pateley Bridge, England, is one of those places. They are the official World Guinness record holder for the oldest continuously trading sweet shop, opened in 1827. Glass jars line the shelves, containing brightly coloured sweets with antique labels.

In addition to holding this record, they lean into the concept of selling retro sweets that bring a wave of nostalgia for many older visitors or for the younger generations are a chance to sample a piece of history. Many of these sweets use the original recipes and are even created using old copper pans.

Dulceria de Celaya | Mexico City, Mexico

Dulcería de Celaya is a tiny, old shop selling traditional Mexican candies and sweets. It opened in Mexico City in 1874. Walking into the shop, nothing has changed in over 100 years. When the family-run shop opened, the candy was made in a small, improvised factory using wooden shovels, copper saucepans and a minature oven. They could only produce so much daily, often only one candy tray. But the sweets were so popular that they would sell out daily. As the demand rose, they expanded their production to meet the city’s needs.

Even today, they produce candy in the same way it was made in the beginning, out of that tiny kitchen. The smell of fresh pineapples, strawberries, guavas, and coconut fills the air when you walk in the doors. It’s intoxicating. The candy is very well-priced, so even if you don’t recognize anything, just let the smells guide you and try whatever your eye is drawn to.

I completely fell in love with onsens on my first trip to Japan. I love European thermal baths, so when I heard Japan had their own bathing culture, I was excited to try it. While getting into the buff is a strange feeling at first, I found there was also something really liberating about it. You’d be surprised how quickly any discomfort disappears as you soak into the calming waters and look at the beautiful scenery all around. It just lulls you into a serene trance and you leave your inhibitions at the door.

What is an Onsen?

An ‘Onsen ‘is the Japanese word for hot spring. Since Japan is a volcanically active country, there are thousands of natural onsens all over the place. The “Onsen” refers not only to the water itself but also to the facilities surrounding the hot springs. Onsen will often be marked with the “” symbol on the map. You might recognize this symbol from your emoji keyboard! You know something is a big deal when it reaches emoji status! If you’re ever wandering around a new city and see flags or signage for the onsen, you should definitely check it out!

The Layout of the Onsen

Some smaller onsens consist of just two large bathing areas, one for the women and one for the men. Other onsens are more like theme parks with many different bathing areas and pools of all different designs. Onsens are typically located in the most scenic Japanese landscapes. Many onsens will be attached to a Ryokan where you can stay the night in these incredible locations. Sitting in the pools, it looks like you have found yourself in a secret garden. The water nestled right under a canopy of trees all around you.

Inside the Onsen, the pools of water may be set at a variety of different temperatures. They are usually between 98-100 degrees. Even in the winter, the natural springs from the earth as still just as warm and a great way to enjoy the outdoors in the cold months. There is also a version of the Onsen called the “mizu-buro,” which is a cold water onsen. Taking a chilly dip into these waters is supposed to help with the heart and increases blood circulation.

Sentōs vs. Onsens

You might also find “Sentōs” when you are travelling around Japan. The only difference between sentōs and onsens is that sentōs heat the water for their public baths from a regular water heater rather than getting it from a natural hot spring. These are more commonly found in areas where there are no volcanic waters, but people still love to relax in a public hot bath.

Why are Onsens Good for the Body?

The natural volcanic spring water contains many different minerals which are said to provide lots of health benefits. It helps with muscle relaxation, increased blood circulation, insomnia and stress, and even cure some skin conditions.

Where is the Best Place to Find Onsen

Onsens and Sentōs can be found pretty much everywhere you go in Japan. Even in Tokyo’s city center, some capsule hotels are known for the onsens included in your stay. But if you want a real, natural springs experience you need to head outside the city and into the scenic countryside.

Hakone

One of the best places to go is Hakone. Hakone is located just over an hour outside of Tokyo but feels like another world. Hakone is home to the sulphur springs of the Owakudani Valley, and it produce some of the most healing waters in Japan. 

Kusatsu

Kusatsu is probably the most famous “onsen town”. An onsen town is a place that became famous only because of the onsens which surround it. People come from all over just to soak in the waters. There wasn’t initially much else to do in these onsen towns other than the onsen itself. Although over the years, with increased tourism, more and more restaurants and attractions have popped up to entertain tourists. But the focus is still on relaxation.

Kyushu

If you are travelling to the south end of Japan, you should visit Kyushu, where you can find the Kurokawa onsen. This Onsen is much more rustic and frequented mostly by locals, but this gives it a traditional atmosphere and unique experience. It feels very much like going back in time to the Japan of yesteryear.

Walking around onsen towns, especially in the winter, is a really cool experience as the hot steam from the springs, pops up practically all over town. Creating streets thick with steam. It’s so cool to find little jets of hot air gushing out from little holes in the ground here and there.

When to Visit an Onsen

Since Onsens are not just a tourist attraction, they are filled with locals throughout the year. Weekends are to be avoided if possible if you are looking for a quieter time to visit. I also recommend avoiding public holidays. The quieter it is inside, the more comfortable you might feel like a newbie rather than being packed in a crowded bath.

I would also recommend avoiding an onsen in the summer. The waters are already pretty warm, and the summer’s added heat and humidity can make this a very uncomfortable experience unless you REALLY like it hot! Visiting an onsen in the winter is actually the perfect way to get warm in the colder months. Despite many onsens being located outdoors, the heat from the springs doesn’t diminish in the cold, and you can easily sit outside in the waters for a long time without feeling too chilly. Plus, you can enjoy the scenic snowfall on the mountains and forest around you without wearing a million layers.

Public Vs. Private Price

Inside many larger onsens, you will have the option of going into the public areas or renting a private room. The public spaces are separated by gender, so if you are looking to experience the onsen with your partner or friend of the opposite gender, you’ll need to opt for a private room. Private rooms come with your own bath and are typically much more expensive than the public onsens. An entry ticket to a public onsen is usually under $20 US, whereas private rooms cost upwards of $60/hour. 

But the price difference is worth it to some. I experienced both, and I found that if you are timid but are really interested in experiencing the Onsen’s wonders, the private baths are the best option for you. They can also feel much more romantic and peaceful. I loved my experience in the private Onsen in Hakone with my partner; it felt like our second honeymoon.

Buying Your Tickets

When you arrive at the Onsen, you will need to first pay admission to get inside. Some of the most popular onsens can book reservations online. Booking reservations aren’t essential unless you want a private bath as those are usually limited in number and during busy times of the year can book up fast. Booking online does ease the process of checking in, but it’s not required.

Smaller onsens in countryside towns might not even have an attendant at the front door during certain times of the year when they are not as busy. It’s just not worth it to them to pay someone to work there when there are so few visitors. In this case, there is a vending machine at the front where you can buy your entry ticket to get inside. In these cases, remember to bring cash since many smaller onsens are cash only.

What To Bring? 

If you are staying in a Ryokan, your hotel room will usually give you towels and a yukata to bring to the Onsen. If you aren’t staying in a Ryokan but have towels in your hotel room, you should bring them with you to the Onsen as they aren’t typically provided. Some onsens will rent towels and robes out at the front entrance, but the smaller ones may not, so you’ll be out of luck if you arrive without out. If you ever run into a situation where you don’t have a towel, and they don’t rent any out, run to your local 100 yen shop as they will always have something. And often these can be even cheaper than renting the towels from the onsen itself.

Enter Change-Room

When you arrive at a public onsen, you will take off your shoes as soon as you step through the doors. Some onsen requires you to wash your feet before even entering the main reception area. Once you take your shoes off, you put them into a small cubby at the front. Don’t worry about not locking them up if there are no keyed cubbies; Japan is such a safe country you don’t need to worry about them being stolen.

Once you present your pre-paid ticket or buy your entrance inside, you enter one of two different change rooms. These change rooms lead into the male and females areas of the Onsen. They are generally marked in Japanese lettering on the fabric curtains. Sometimes these are colour-coded; red for women, blue for men. If they are not marked in English, you can always ask the attendant for help.

Konyoku

While almost all onsens are separated by gender, there are a few co-ed onsens around the country. These are called “konyoku” and are great options if you want to experience the Onsen with friends of different genders. Unfortunately, Japan is pretty behind the times when recognizing transgender, genderqueer and intersex people, so konyokus are also better options for those individuals. Konyokus are pretty similar to European nude beaches, and those same rules of propriety should be followed.

Tattoos

About 50% of public onsens do not allow you to come into the baths if you have tattoos. While this is an antiquated rule, for many traditional onsens, it still comes into effect. If you opt for a private onsen room, you won’t need to worry about this rule. I always advise you to ask the Onsen about their tattoo policy before booking to ensure you won’t be disappointed when you arrive.

You MUST be Naked

Once you enter the change room, grab yourself a locker or basket. Put your drying towel, yukata and all the rest of your belonging and clothes inside. And yes, I mean all of your clothes! No bathing suits are allowed. You enter the Onsen wearing nothing but your birthday suit. Although going into a public bath naked might seem pretty intimidating, it’s just one of those things you’ll get used to. Everyone else is naked too. It’s not only you. Public bathing is so common in Japan, so the locals aren’t phased. Don’t worry about feeling like people are looking awkwardly at you – they aren’t.

Modesty Towel

The one item you are allowed to bring into the onsen area is a small “modest towel.” This tower is there to help with those initial nerves. This small hand towel is meant to hold over your private parts for an extra little bit of coverage if you’re shy. This is never to be dipped right into the water, and you must place it on your head to keep it out of the water once you get into the onsen. Look how the locals are doing it and you’ll catch on immediately.

Take a Shower First

Before getting into the Onsen, you must take a shower. But these are not western-style stand-up showers. Instead, you’ll usually find a long bar of low shower heads with little stool beside them. You will sit on the stool and wash with the shampoo and body wash provided. No need to bring anything in yourself; it will all be there, ready for you. Many onsens will have various bath areas, and you should always remember to rinse and shower between going in and out of these other areas.

Etiquette

• Never put your head under the water, as this will contaminate the water.
• Don’t wash your body inside the Onsen; that is what the shower area is for.
• If you have long hair, put it up in a high pony-tail to keep it out of the water.
• The Onsen isn’t for swimming and definitely no diving!
• Keep your voice to a low volume as an onsen’s experience is supposed to be a relaxing one.
• Attempt to dry yourself as much as possible with your modest towel before entering the change room after the baths. It’s rude to trail in lots of water into the change room.
• There are no phones allowed inside. This is to ensure no one is taking photos. Take this time without your devices to unwind and disconnect. Private onsens, on the other hand, are fair game since you are there in private. But I would still advise you to take a few photos only and spend most of your time in peace and quiet.

Lounge Area

If you find you are getting too hot inside the Onsen, you can always get out, throw your robe or yukata on and relax in the lounge area. Depending on the size and design of the Onsen, this could be something as simple as a series of benches beside a vending machine or a beautiful restaurant set out in the natural environment. A post-bath meal, like a warm bowl of soba in the winter, is one of the best ways to finish off your day at the Onsen.

History

In 1185 Shōgun Minamoto no Yoritomo became the first Kamakura Shogunate. The Kamakura Shogunate was the feudal military government leader of Japan. One of the first things Minamoto did as Shogun was to move the seat of power in Japan to Kamakura. This period was called the ‘Kamakura Era. In the later years of its rule, Kamakura became one of the most populous settlements in Japan.

The name ‘Kamakura‘ comes from the words “kama” and “kura”. Kama means “oven” and kura means “saddle “. In ancient Japan, an oven or hearth was closed on three sides and open on one side. Kamakura itself is closed-off on all side by mountains but open on one side out to the ocean. In addition, when you look at the landscape of Kamakura from the ocean the hillside creates a saddle-like shape.

How to Get to Kamakura

Kamakura is a comfortable hour-long train ride from Tokyo, making it one of the easiest day-trip. If you leave from the central hub of Tokyo Station you can get directly on the Yokosuka Line. This line arrives directly at our first stop, Kita-Kamakura Station. No need to change any lines. From anywhere else in Tokyo you can still arrive quickly in Kamakura with generally just one change of trains.

How Much Does a Day in Kamakura Cost?

No matter where you are in the city, a ticket to Kamakura will run you about 900 – 1,100 yen. So around $20 USD for a return ticket. While you are in Kamakura your main expenses will be admission into the shrines, a few train tickets and some street food. So much of this tour is on foot and only the large distances are covered on the train. A day out in Kamakura is easily done for under $60. I’ve done my best to list the costs throughout the post so you can plan accordingly.

When to Leave & How much time to Spend in Kamakura

I ALWAYS advise leaving Tokyo as early as you can, around 7:30 am if possible. This means you can nap a bit on the hour-long journey but miss the rush hour traffic. Leaving at 7:30 am means you’ll arrive in Kamakura around 8:30 – 9:00 am. This leaves you LOTS of time to leisurely explore the city. If you want to eliminate a few shrines from this guide, you can also plan this as a half-day trip along with a visit to Enoshima. But this guide is prepared for a full day, so plan your time accordingly.

Shrine Etiquette

Much of this tour involves going into various temples and shrines. There are specific rules to keep in mind if you wish to be respectful when visiting.

Wash Your Hands

At the entrance to the shrine, you’ll find a large area of running water with a basin and ladle. This is meant for you to wash your hands and clean yourself before entering the sacred space. Take the ladle from the basin and hold it in your right hand. Take a scoop of water and pour it over your left hand. Then reverse hands and repeat. Before putting the ladle back, dip it back in the water and tilt it upwards to send a stream of water down the handle. Cleansing it one last time.

Keep Quiet

Ensure that when you enter a temple, you keep as silent as possible. Most interiors do not allow photography of any kind, so be sure to respect this rule if enforced. Your phone on silent to be sure you do no interrupt someone’s prayer.

Praying and Offerings

When leaving an offering, gently drop a coin into the “saisen-bako” or offertory box. This is a large wooden trough with vertical slats to drop your coin into located in from of the Shinto shrine. Five-yen coins are considered good luck while a ten-yen coin is thought to be unlucky.

If there is a bell in front of the shrine and you have left your offering you can take the rope and ring the bell. This is thought to alert the kami (or spirits) of your presence. After you ring the bell you bow twice, clap your hands twice and then bow once more. This is the way to greet the kami after ringing the bell.

If you wish to pray in front of any of the Buddist statues we will see on the tour, simply hold your hands together in silent prayer.

Start your Tour at Kita-Kamakura Station

Your arrival in Kamakura will begin at Kita-Kamakura station. “Kita” in Japanese means “north” as this station is slightly north of the city center and main train station. What I love about coming right into a smaller countryside station is you immediately feel the difference from the big city. The station has just two platforms and a tiny entrance gate.

Engaku-ji Temple

Just on the other side of the train tracks is the entrance to Engaku-ji Temple. This temple complex is one of the most important Zen Buddhist temples in all of Japan. A tall staircase is nestled in the heart of this incredible cedar forest, leading you into the temple. The first building built here was made in 1282. It was made in honour of the fallen soldiers of the second invasion of the Mongols. Despite the original date of its construction, since the buildings were all made of wood, multiple fires have damaged and destroyed them throughout the ages. Therefore many of the current incarnations are reconstructions of the original designs.

Admission 300 yen for adults and 100 yen for children

The complex opens at 8 am, just as the morning sun begins to rise. I can still smell the morning dew on the cedar needles as I walked up the staircase.

Sanmon

When you walk up the temple path, you begin by walking up a set of low stairs leading you up to this grand wooden gate. This is the Sanmon gate, a two-storey work of art that was rebuilt in 1785. Look close at the upper levles to find an intricate series of carvings.

The most crucial carving is that of the Bodhisattva statues, people on the path to enlightenment. There are also sixteen carvings of the arhats (those who have achieved nirvana) and the twelve yakshas (heavenly generals who protect the temple).

Butsudan

A series of smaller structures seem to guide you towards the Butsudan or main hall. Large juniper trees lean in towards the entrance, keeping it safe from the elements around it. This is where the holy wooden statue of the Shaka Buddha is housed. This Buddha was made in the Kamakura period, around the 13th century. The Shaka Buddha is different from other Buddha images as this one is crowned with a golden headband. There are also two other statues of the Bonten and Taishakuten in the hall, dating back to 1692. 

Look up at the ceiling inside and soak in the splendour of the beautiful dragon painting on the roof. This was painted under the supervision of one of Japan’s greatest contemporary painters; Season Maeda, around 1945. Seison Maeda moved to Kamakura after his home in the city was destroyed during a bombing raid. He lived just on the other side of the Kita-Kamakura Station, where he could see the temple complex from his window. He lived there until his death at the age of 92 and is buried at a nearby temple.

One of my favourite parts Engaku-ji is the pathway leading towards the back of the complex. There, you’ll find a perched series of buildings set over top of a small pond. Above them, the swell of the forest crashes over the rooftops. It is such a sight to see!

Sharidan

Towards the back of the complex, you’ll find a small, single-storied building with a steep pent roof covered in ancient cypress park shingles. This catches your eye right away as its design is so unique. The Sharidan, while small in size, houses the most precious items from the temple’s collection: a tooth from the Buddha themself. This is considered a National Treasure and the building which houses it, a reliquary.

White Deer Cave

Opposite the Sharidan, follow the path, to find a smaller marker indicating the White Deer Cave. On the opening day of the temple complex, when the preacher came out to give her sermon, it was said that a white deer emerged from this cave to listen to him. This was seen as a much auspicious event, and to this day, the cave is protected to ensure the mystical white deer is not disturbed.

Bentendo

Head back towards where you entered, but instead of going back down the stairs, head towards the complex’s south-east end. There you will find a stone torii gate leading to another set of stairs. This takes you through the forest once more into the Bentendo.

The stairs seem to go up and up, further into the woods. When you reach the top, your walk will be rewarded with an incredible lookout over the hills and mountains of Kamakura. The temple up here is dedicated to Benten or Benzaiten, goddess of wealth, happiness, wisdom and music.

There is also a tea house here with a simple series of benches to sit and enjoy your macha. I would highly recommend taking a break for tea here as the views are stunning. Just outside the Bentendo is a small structure containing the Great Bell. This large copper bell is 2.6 meters tall and one of the largest in Kamakura. It was made in the 12th century and is a real piece of history.

Tokei-ji

Head back down to Kita-Kamakura Station and walk two minutes down the road towards Tokei-ji. Tokei-ji is a Buddist temple and formal nunnery. Nunneries are a real rarity to find in Japan and only five nunneries actually still survive.

Admission: 200 yen for adults and 100 yen for children.

In Japan, nunneries were a sanctuary for women who had been abused by their husbands and needed to escape. In the 13th century, divorce was not an option for these women. Running to a nunnery was their only way to get out of the bad situation they were in. For this reason, the temple also goes by the nickname “Divorce Temple“. Over 200 years, over 2,000 women came here to seek refuge. In the late 19th century, once women were able to initiate divorce themselves, the temple was converted into a monastery.

Flowers Garden

Other than the temple’s rich history, people often come here to see the beautiful flower garden. Throughout the year the garden blooms all around the temple complex. The cherry blossom trees are magnificent to see in the Springtime. It seems fitting that a temple dedicated to protecting women would be surrounded by such stunning of natural beauty.

Amidst the gardens, you’ll find the beautiful statue of the Buddha. Peacefully sitting among the pine and cedar trees, he looks our serenely at you as you approach. As if granting you a moment of gentle acknowledgment. The buddha is in abhaya mudra position. The gesture of blessing represents protection, peace, benevolence and the dispelling of fear. No doubt it brought lots of comfort to the women who came here to escape their cruel husbands.

Cemetery

One of the most serene parts of the temple complex is towards the back, deep in the forest. Here you will find a small graveyard where many different Japanese celebrities have been buried. In Japan, it is important to leave items atop the graves of your family members. These items represent things they once loved in life and how the living continue to pay respect to the dead.

Meigetsuin Street

Exit the temple and walk back to the road. Follow the road south towards the river crossing. Walk beside the river’s edge, along Meigetsuin Street. This street will begin to go uphill quickly as you moved into the thick of Kamakura’s hillside. The road is narrow, but the street is popular with the visitor as well. You’ll often find street vendors on either side of the road selling souvenirs and street food. The houses along the route are beautiful examples of historic countryside houses.

Ishikawa Coffee

The further you walk along the street, the fewer tourist you’ll find will be walking with you. It begins to feel like you are entering an area that is just residential. But continue onwards and soak in the beauty which is this quiet area. After around 10 minutes, you should reach your destination, which is Ishikawa Coffee. The coffee shop feels like a secret hideaway in the mountains, and maybe that’s why the coffee tastes so good. There are lots of delicious baked goods here to recharge your system for the rest of the day. While the 10-minute hike up to the coffee shop might seem like a long side-quest just for coffee but it gives you a reason to see the lovely rural houses of the people who live in Kamakura. Plus you get a little reward at the end.

Enoden Line

Jump back on the metro at Kita-Kamakura Station and head one-stop to Kamakura station. At Kamakura station, you can change lines onto the historic Enoden Line. The Enoden line only covers 10 kilometres of track across this area of Japan but it is a truly scenic 10 kilometres. It was established in 1902 to connected Kamakura to various famous spots like Enoshima Shrine, Iwaya Caves, the beach and more.

One of the things that make this train line so popular is the rail cars’ iconic design. These look like they are straight from anime cartoons with their retro, brightly coloured exteriors. The trains are so iconic they even have little gatchapon toys you can buy outside the stations. For 300 yen it’s a great little souvenir of your time on the Enoden.

Train to Hase Station: 340 yen

Hasedera Temple

Ride the Enoken to Hase Station. Five minutes from the station, you walk over to Hasedera Temple, for which the train station is named. When you arrive at Hasedera Temple, the first thing you will notice is the iconic pine tree that leans towards the entrance to the temple. As if protecting it from the elements. The Hasedera temple is a Buddhist temple built into the mountain “Kannon-zan.” It is most famous for the massive wooden statue of Kannon that is housed in the temple on top of the mountain.

Admission: 400 yen for adults and 200 yen for children under 12

Gardens

When you enter through the ticket booth, you step right into the beautiful gardens—these welcome visitors with a spread of blooms throughout the year. In the winter, you can find ume blossoms and narcissus sprouting up..

In the spring, the sakura petals fall on the green grass, and 150 varieties of bright white, red and pink peonies cover the bushes. Summertime brings lotus blossoms and hydrangeas that pop open all over the hillside. In the fall, the red spider lilies bloom along with floral Hibiscus’.

Benten-kutsu Cave

To the right of the entrance, be sure to visit the mysterious Benten-kutsu Cave. The Benten or Benzaiten cave was a sacred place where the Buddist saint, Kobo Dashi, practiced in the seclusion. Inside the candle-lit cave is a large statue of the Benzaiten as well as 16 of her followers.

The Benzaiten is one of the female goddesses of Buddism, who represents feminine beauty and wealth. Inside the cave you’ll find thousands of tiny wooden carvings of the Benzaiten, playing her biwa. The Biwa is an ancient Japanese instrument, essentially a long neck lute. It was traditionally used in narrative storytelling. You can buy a minature of her for 300 yen and leave it here in your honour. Or just keep it as a souvenir, either way, the money goes towards the temple.

Jizo Bodhisattva

As you climb the hill to the upper temple, you will notice the hundreds of statues that line the staircases and hillside. These are statues of the Jizo Bodhisattva, the guardian deity of children who help guide their souls to paradise. When the temple was first built, parents would come here and dedicate a statue to their children to protect the Kannon. Over the years, the symbolism of Jizo statues has changed. Today, they are markers of the souls of children who were lost to miscarriage or stillborn children. Some of the statues are tied with bibs or hand-knit clothing. Never forgotten by their would-be mothers.

While knowing this makes the rows and rows of tiny statues a seemingly sad image, their smiling faces tell another story. That their souls are at rest, and they are happy wherever they are. Each year old statues are burned or buried to make room for more, but they bring a smile to many faces they greet while they remain.

Inari Shrine

Another stop to make along the stairs towards the top is at the Inari Shrine. Inari shrines are a type of Japanese shrine used to worship a particular deity. These shrines aren’t inside the typical building but instead marked by a series of vermillion torii gates. Along the edges of the shrine, there are walls with wooden plaques called the ema. These plaques are left with messages from people who come to pray at the shrine. Typically the ema are in the form of the deity of the inari shrine. In the case of this shrine, we find one of the most peculiar deities, the oyster!

The oysters or kakigara were thought to protect the Kannon Goddess statue while she was at sea. The oysters clung to the wooden figure to protect her from damage or any other predators. The walls here are covered in shells representing the precious kakigara.

Shoro Belfry

When you finally reach the top, the first thing you will see is the Shoro Belfy. This great bell was initially made in 1264 and is the oldest bell in Kamakura. It is rung every morning at 8 am when the gates to the temple open.

Amida Hall

The grand temple at the top is actually made up of three different buildings. The first of which is the Amida Hall. The Amida is the “Buddha of Immeasurable Light and Life.” Inside the building, you will find a golden statue of the great Amida. This Buddha is thought to promise rebirth to all those who chant his name.

Hondo, Main Hall

Inside the Hondo, or Main Hall, is where you’ll find the great statue of the Kannon Goddess. The Kannon Goddess is one of the most precious relics of Japan. It is the tallest wooden statue, standing at 30 feet tall! Legend has it that two figures were carved out of a giant sacred tree. One was sent to the temple in Nara, and the other was thrown into the water.

It was said that wherever the statue reappeared would be a new sacred place. After 15 long years, the statue turned up on the shores near Kamakura, and the temple was built in its honour in 726 AD. The Kannon Goddess is the Goddess of Mercy. She is an 11-headed spirit, each head representing a different phase in the search for enlightenment.

Restaurant and Cafe

Atop the hill, there is a panoramic view of Yuigahama Beach. You can enjoy the view while sitting outside the cafeteria on the long communal tables.

Get something to drink or have a cold ice cream cone to enjoy in the summertime. Either way, this is the best place to see over all of Kamakura.

Prospect Path

To head down from the top, take a walk along the Prospect’s path that winds down the mountain’s western side. This pathway is famous in the summer when it is littered with multi-coloured blooming hydrangeas.

Kyōzō

Before you get to the exit at the bottom of the path, you come across the beautiful secret bamboo forest. In the center of the forest is the Kyōzō. A Kyōzō is a repository for Buddhist scriptures or sūtras. Each one of these was handwritten in beautiful Japanese calligraphy then rolled into a cylinder. Each of the rolled scrolls is placed inside a central pillar, which revolves. This is called the rinzō or wheel repository.

Pay special attention to the large wood cylinders along the wall. These are called “mani” or prayer wheels, used in Tibetan Buddhism. It is believed that when you turned this mani, you will receive the same virtues when the correct prayers are recited. This is perhaps one of the most overlooked parts of the temple complex, and yet, as a bibliophile, I found it to be one of the best interests of the tour.

Great Daibutsu at Kotoku-in

A short 7-minute walk from Hasedera temple brings you to the gates of Kōtoku-in. Kōtoku-in is home to perhaps the most impressive monument of Kamakura, the Great Daibutsu. ‘Daibutsu‘ is the Japanese word for “giant Buddha.”

Admission: 200 yen for adults and 150 yen for children.

Walking in the front gates, you can immediately see the Buddha rising in front of the mountains in the background. As you enter, there is a plaque that reads: “Stranger, whosoever thou art and whatsoever be thy creed, when thou enterest this sanctuary remember thou treadest upon ground hallowed by the worship of ages. This is the Temple of Buddha and the gate of the eternal, and should therefore be entered with reverence.” 

History of the Great Daibutsu

The 43 ft tall bronze statue has been sitting in the same spot since 1252. The first incarnation of the statue was made in wood in 1243. The wooden statue took many years to be completed. But after all that work, the wooden sculpture was destroyed by a great storm in 1248. As a result, a new version was commissioned, and this one was to be made in bronze. The new bronze statue was finally completed in 1252, and it hasn’t moved since. I mean, it weighs 93 tonnes; I don’t think it’s going anywhere.

Originally the Buddha was housed inside a great hall. But year after year, the hall was destroyed by Kamakura’s rough seaside weather. After the most violent storm in 1369, the rebuilding of the hall was abandoned. Since then the statue has remained in the open air. And I think I far prefer it this way. The gorgeous contrast of the bronze buddha against the bright blue sky is one of the most stunning images.

Details of the Buddha

At one point, the great Buddha was covered in gold gilding. Only a few gold pieces remain around the ears and cheeks, the rest lost to the ages. On either side of the Buddha are two incredible carvings of climbing lotus blossoms. Originally there were 10 of these surrounding the Buddha. But the rest were either stolen or lost over time.

The design of the Buddha was made in the “song style.” This was the prevalent method of sculpture art in the Kamakura period. This style is represented by the bowl-shaped hair strands, a flat, square face, stooped posture and oversized head. The clothes which the Buddha wears over their shoulders are a simple, single piece of fabric. This remains slightly open around the chest as if to express a sliver of mortality. Unlike some Buddha statues, which have a raised hand, this statue sits with its hands on its knees. This is the position of contemplation and grounding. Because the figure is hollow, you can even stick your head inside and get a look at the interior. There is a winding staircase inside the Buddha which was used when creating it and is also used for repairs.

Yuigahama Beach

Before heading back to the train station, walk down from the temple directly to Yuigahama Beach! It would be such a shame to come all this way without enjoying some time on the sand. There is a 7-Eleven and a Family Mart on the way back to the beach, which you can stop off at to get yourself everything you need for a lovely beach picnic.

Yuigahama Beach offers views of Enoshima Island. The beach itself is filled with rich iron sands and you can find lots of pretty little shells along the shore. The coast is very popular with the locals during the summer months. There are even places that rent chairs and umbrellas to sit out under on the sand. In the summer, there are also street vendors selling the popular Japanese shaved ice dessert; kakigori!

Komachi-dori

Once you are finished at the beach, jump back on the Enoden train and head back over to Kamakura station. From the station, head outside and over to Komachi Street. You’ll be able to spot the street from the station by the large red torii gate, which marks the entrance.

Train from Hase to Kamakura: 200 yen

Komachi Street or Komachi-dori is one of the six historic main roads that formed the initial layout of the city of Kamakura. Today, the street is the most popular shopping area for residents and tourists alike. You can find everything from souvenirs to local treats and lovely restaurants. While the street is pretty busy, don’t let that put you off, as everyone is here to enjoy all the amazing things to eat and drink in Kamakura! Because the road is so popular, it is designated as a pedestrian-only zone. Komachi Street is a great place to wander along and try out different local street foods. While there are many traditional Japanese classics, you need to try a few unique ones local to Kamakura!

Komachi Chaya

Hydrangeas are Kamakura’s iconic flower. They can be found in gardens and flower beds everywhere you look in the Spring. They are a local obsession. Just as Sakura’s seem to be a Japanese obsession, Kamakura residents love their hydrangeas. At Komachi Chaya, you can get not only a hydrangea black tea but also a beautiful kakigori inspired by the colours of the hydrangea. Traditionally a kakigori is either plain or covered in toppings. But this one is served with a tray of various fruit compotes on the side to pour on top to your personal preference! Such a unique way to serve kakigori, so the fruit doesn’t immediately melt the ice.

KYO Kamakura

Daifuku is one of Japan’s most popular desserts, made from mochi with a sweet red bean filling. Here in Kamakura, they have a very unique take on the sweet; the Zunda Daifuku. Zunda is soybeans, also known as edamame. These savoury beans are ground up into a paste and placed inside the mochi. This gives it a much less sweet flavour than the traditional red bean variety. No for everyone, but worth giving a try! You can find the Zunda Daifuku at KYO Kamakura.

Hannari Inari

One of Kamakura’s most famous local delicacies is Shirasu, or whitebait. These tiny fish are like minature sardines and are usually served raw, in a large amount as they are so small. Because eating them just on their own can be a little intimidating if you’re not used to eating a pile of tiny fish with faces, Hannari Inari has an excellent option for you. They have recently come up with the ‘Shirasuka.’ The Shirasuka is a Japanese omelette filled with Shirasu. These are served on a stick to be easily eaten on the go. The fish adds an umami flavour to the egg and balances out its sweetness.

Kamakurayama Rusk

A “rusk” was something I had never heard of before coming to Kamakura. A Rusk or “rasuku” is a slice of bread that has been covered in butter and sugar and then toasted until it is crisp like a crouton. The sugar caramelizes while cooking adding to the rich flavour. Kamakurayama Rusk has taken the treats to another level. Their rusks come in these vortex designs with swirling colours that are mesmerizing. They even come in different shapes as well. But what really makes them unique are the flavours. You can find macha, burdock, fruit sala, berry shortcake, earl grey, caramel, and more!

Kamakura Ichibanya

Kamakura Ichibanya is a shop that makes fresh senbei right there on the street. The smell wafts down the road, guiding you over like in a trance. Senbei are Japanese rice crackera. The ones sold here come in many different flavours, including the most popular; nori wrapped topped in a sweet soy sauce.

Sakura no Yumemiya

My favourite stop on the food tour is Sakura no Yumemiya. This shop sells a variety of fantastic dango. Dango are Japanese dumplings made from rice flour. They are very similar to mochi, but the balls of rice flour are smaller, the size of a marble, and steamed to make them super bouncy instead of chewy. While dango usually comes in just one of two flavours, this shop has dozens and dozens of toppings that jazz it up.

You can get Sakura, chestnut, roasted soybean, taro, honey lemon, strawberry, edamame, and even nori wrapped! You can also even get one stick of dango covered in a mixture of different toppings! The best way to try all their other flavours without getting too full!

Kamakura Mameya

Kamakura Mameya is best known for the candy-coloured dried nuts and legumes. This place is so popular among the locals so prepare to wait. Inside you’ll find peanuts, Komachi beans, soybeans, Koiso pea, broad beans, as well as dried seasonal produce like grapes, tangerines and Sakura. Each one of these treats is covered in brightly coloured toppings making everything look like a piece of candy even when it is actually pretty healthy!

The bags vary in price depending on the item you pick but each one is around 200-500 yen

Momiji Chaya

The lines can be pretty long at this shop, but it’s well worth it! Momiji Chaya are famous for their matcha tiramisu! The entire dessert is served within the most aesthetic bamboo box and perfectly levelled out to make it look like it is merely a dessert cube. The whole thing is covered in a dusting of fresh macha to add a bit of bitterness to balance the tiramisu’s sweetness.

Kamakura Karari

If you enjoyed the Shirasu omelette earlier, I would implore you to try out a Shirasu-don. This is a whitebait rice bowl. The Shirasu served like this really brings out the fish’s flavour more and is one of the most traditional ways to enjoy the local catch of the day. While other shops usually serve the Shirasu raw, Kamakura Karari also offers it broiled or cooked in a tempura fritter! I opted for the fritter, and it was amazing!

Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū

To finish the day off, let’s spend the last few hours of sunlight at the most important shrine in Kamakura; Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū. Despite the fact it is one of the most important, it is also one of the newest shrines. That being said, it is still almost 1000 years old!

Admission: The Shrine is free to explore but the museum costs 200 yen to enter

Minamoto no Yoritomo

Shogunate Minamoto no Yoritomo was the founder of the Kamakura. When he became Shogunate, his first task was to move the captial of Japan from Kyoto to his home in Kamakura. Kamakura was previously a simple fishing village. When it became the capital they essentially had a fresh space to create a capital city. The second task Minamoto did was to move the Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū shrine to Kamakura from its previous location in Zaimokuza.

Hachiman

The Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū shrine is dedicated to the god Hachiman. Hachiman is the divine protector of Japan. He is known as the “god of martial arts” as he was the great patron deity of the samurai. Moving the temple of Hachiman also meant moving the nation’s best warriors to reside in the new location in order to protect this new government.

The name “Hachiman” means “eight banners.” Emperor Ōjin is the divine spirit of the deity Hachiman, and it is the legend that when he was born, eight heavenly banners flew through the sky, carried by doves, to signal his birth. You will find images of doves used as talismans in reference to Emperor Ōjin.

Genpei Ponds

Walking up to the shrine, the first thing which greets you is a large red torii gate. Opposite the red torii gate is a low-lying stone bridge that crosses two ponds on either side. The two Genpei ponds represent the Minamoto clan on the left and the Taira clan on the right. The Taira clan was the bitter rival of Shogun Minamoto. On the left side which is in honour of the Minamoto clan, the pond has three little islands. The number three in Japan symbolizes birth. The pond on the right, on the other hand, has four islands. The number four represents death, corresponding with the pond associated with the rival clan. Perhaps used as an omen and warning to those who come to the shrine with cruel intentions.

Living inside the pond are many different coloured koi fish and cute softshell turtles. There are lots of waterfowl too, creating a constant flurry of activity in the trees and water. In the summertime, the entirety of the water’s surface is blooming with lotus flowers and is such a sight to see!

Feng Shui Layout

Because the new Shogun had complete control of his new captial city’s design, he wanted to ensure that it was built with Feng Shui in mind.
Feng Shui is a Chinese principle that focuses on the natural forces on earth. The idea is that these forces can be harmonized and controlled to create power and good fortune. One way this is done is by the orientation of building around these invisible forces. Many principles of Feng Shui were kept in mind when designing the layout of the shrine. They had consulted the royal diviner who chose this place as it had a mountain to the north, a river to the east, a great road to the west and an opening to the south.

Taiko Bridge

Walking up towards the first bridge might find that both sides of the larger stone bridge are closed off by a red gate. This is because this bridge was reserved for the Shogunate only. The common folk needed to use a flatter bridge on either side to access the shrine. Despite the fact that the shogun of Kamakura is long dead the tradition remains as a memory to him. To the left of the shogun bridge, stands an ancient plum pine tree.

Hataage Benzaiten Shrine

After crossing the bridge, walk out onto the pond towards the Hataage Benzaiten Shrine. This can be found to the right of the entrance. A series of white flags mark this shrine. Each of these flags is a prayer left by visitors. If you wish to purchase your own flag to leave on the island you can purchase one near the shrine. If you have google translate downloaded on your phone you can use this to help translate some of the prayers left behind. Like a wave of wishes blowing in the wind.

Archery Track

As you continue down the complex, you’ll see a large crossing on either side of you. This is the ancient archery track. This was where the traditional Yabusame Shinto ritual would take place. This Shinto ritual would occur once a year. All the best samurai would come here to compete against each other for the glory of the shogun. They would mount their hoses and attempt to shoot three targets while riding at full speed down the track.

The event was started when the new Shogun realized that his archers lacked skills with their bow. He thought this would give them a good incentive to practice. Even today, a festival is held yearly in the fall where people dress in costume and perform the ritual just the great samurai would have years ago.

Maiden

The building at the base of the stairs is called the Maiden or Shimoden. The most famous woman in Japanese history and literature was a Shizuka Gozen or Lady Shizuka. She was a court dancer and mistress of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Shizuka Gozen devoted herself to Minamoto and would dance for him with a passion that would entrance all those who watched. Famously, she would come here to perform some of her most memorable productions. Today, the Maiden is still a popular spot for dances and musical performances. As well as weddings and festivals which are held here throughout the year.

Every morning at the Maiden, people gather to offer rice, sake, vegetables, fruits, and other offerings to Hachiman. Locals come to pray for the prosperity of the Imperial Family and the nation. This ritual is called onikkusai.

In addition to paying your respects to Hachiman okami, you can also come to pray for the safety of your family and the health of your body.

Sake Rice Baskets

Off to the left of the Maiden, you’ll see a large structure filled with giant sake barrels. Different sake producers will donate large sums of money to the shrines in order to ensure good fortune for their companies. These barrels are only ceremonial and do not contain any real sake but they are still such a beautiful thing to look at.

Shirahata Shrine

On the eastern side of the lower level, you will find the Shirahata Shrine, also called the Junior Shrine. This is where the spirit of Minamoto Yoritomo and Minamoto Sanetomo are enshrined. The dark wood of the shrine is painted black and embellished with gold trim. Many people come to this shrine to pray for victory in honour of the great shogun.

Masako stone

Right beside the shrine, you’ll find the Masako stones. When you pour water on the rocks, an image of a turtle or a crane will appear. Both the crane and the turtle represent longevity as it is fabled that cranes and turtles have life spans of thousands of years. Pour some water on the rocks to pray for some life longevity for yourself!

Soreisha

On the western side of the complex, you’ll find this old, seemingly forgotten building. This is the Soreisha, the shrine dedicated to the ancestor spirits. Many people seem to miss this building and it is one of the most peaceful areas of the place. It is a newer shrine, erected in 1949. The spirits which are said to reside here are thought to protect the land and people come here to pray for their own protection.

Ginko Tree

The staircase leading to the main shrine is flanked on either side by two trees. But you might notice that the one on the left is significantly smaller. This was once where a great ginkgo tree once stood for over 1000 years. It was a precious treasure of the nation and a holy place for pilgrims.

In March 2010, a huge storm came through and uprooted the tree. Although great efforts were made to replant it, the tree could not be saved in its entirety. Because the tree was so important, the trunk was replanted in the hopes it would reproduce leaves (which it since has). Other cuttings were also replanted, and they have even begun to multiply and regrown.

The tree was said to have played a large part in the assassination of shōgun Minamoto no Sanetomo in 1219. The assassin, his nephew, hid in the tree as his uncle was leaving the shrine. When he walked down the stairs, his nephew jumped from the tree and attacked. He thought this act would enable him to become the next Shogun, but the public didn’t support his succession, and instead, he was beheaded the same day for his actions.

Stairway

The large stairway leading up to the main shrine contains 61 steps. 61 in an interesting number as it is thought to be unlucky. Perhaps the uprooting of the tree and the assassination were both brought about by the unlucky omens of the stairs.

Main Shrine Jugo

As you climb the stairs, you pass through the Sakura Gate to enter the main shrine, the Jogu. This building was recently renovated in the 21st century when the previously plain wood was repainted in this bright vermillion. The main shrine enshrines Emperor Ojin, Himegami and Empress Jingu.

On the front of the shrine is a black sign with gold lettering. The Japanese character at the top represents a dove which is the messenger used by the deity Hachiman.

Gingko Emas

At most shrines you can buy an ema, a wood plaque, to leave your prayers on. The emas at this shrine are printed with the image of the great ginkgo tree.

You can also get yourself a souvenir omikuji or random paper fortune outside the shrine. You can get on here for 200 yen that comes with your fateful prediction as well as a dove charm in honour of the deity Hachiman. When you open the fortune, should it be unlucky, fold the paper in a thin strip and place it inside the nearby “bad luck box.” Place your hand around the arrow above the box as this is said to help remove the bad luck.

Treasure Hall

The main shrine is separated into three areas, the main sanctuary, the treasure hall and the worship hall, each connected through long hallways. The Treasure Hall is located on the west side of the main sancutary and contains sacred items from the history of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. This is the only part of the temple complex which requires admission (200 yen).

Inside, you can find such things as samurai swords from the 18th century, black lacquer arrows, 19th-century bows and quivers, and a series of ceremonial kimonos.

Maruyama Inari Shrine

On the western side of the Jogu, you will find the Senior Shrine, the Maruyama Inari Shrine. This is the oldest remaining shrine on the grounds. Standing guard outside this part of the shrine we find the Inari who are kami foxes. Kami are Japanese spirits. The fox spirits are thought to bring fertility to the land and are often seen as the spirits of agriculture.

To the right of the shrine, you’ll find a series of torii gates. Walking down the hillside through the torii gates will lead you back down to the lower level. The flags which appear in front of the torii gates have been purchased by those who pray for prosperity in their businesses. These are often the most costly prayers and only large companies are featured here.

Before leaving, take a seat in the rest area just opposite the large pond. During certain times of the year, purple wisteria grows all over the canopy. This beautiful scene is the perfect place to end your time at the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine.

Dankazura

As you start to head back to the train station, we walk down the pedestrian walkway or dankazura. The Dankazura is a stunning alley flanked on either side by beautiful sakura trees and brightly coloured flower gardens.

Ni no Torii

At the end of the alley, you come to the Ni no Torii, the final torii gate. On either side of this torii gate are two large guardian lion-dogs. The one on the left has its mouth open forming the Sanskrit letter “A”. On the other hand, the one right has its mouth closed forming the sound of the Sanskrit letter “MA”. Together the lions are attempting to sound out “Aum” which is a sacred sound and mantra practiced in Buddhism.

This brings us to the end of the tour. If you’re still hungry and didn’t eat all you could along Komachi Street, you can head over there before your train back to Tokyo leaves from Kamakura station. I hope you enjoyed this day-trip from the big city and felt like the sun, shrines, and seaside rejuvenated your body and spirit.

#1 Ramen

Ramen is a Japanese adaptation of a classic Chinese wheat noodles dish brought to Japan in 1859. But since its adoption, Japanese chefs have changed the recipes considerably and really made it their own! Other dishes on this list might make the #1 spot on other blogs, but for me, ramen is the best thing you can eat in Japan! It’s rich, complex while still being simple and best of all, it’s cheap and filling!

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different ramen variations to suit any palette. And you can find a new ramen shop almost on every corner. The most traditional type of ramen is made with soy sauce and miso in a pork bone broth. Then it’s topped with a slice of tender pork, spring onions, bamboo shoots and a lovely soft boiled egg (always add the egg!)

Whereas sushi comes in a wide range of prices, ramen is reliably the same price everywhere you. Of course, there is the occasional upscale version but those you really have to seek out. You can get it dirt cheap from the konbini, but for the most part, ramen restaurants around the city will serve you up a hot bowl of noodle soup for less than $10. Suppose you love ramen as much as me. In that case, you HAVE to check out the ramen museum in Yokohama! Here you can sample recipes and dishes from all over Japan in one easy-to-access spot just an hour outside Tokyo!

#2 Sushi

Even people who have never been to Japan associate Sushi as its National dish. And while it might seem like a common response to what to eat in Japan, it’s up there for a reason. Sushi in Japan really is just that good! The word ‘sushi’ means “sour-tasting”. It is named because of the sushi rice, which is always seasoned with “sour” rice vinegar. Japan is the 5th largest island nation and is surrounded by water, and therefore, by fish! But it’s not just proximity to the waters which is important. It is the legacy of the craft and the care taken in preparing the sushi.

While you might think that sushi all about the fish, most sushi chefs will tell you it’s actually all about the rice! Chefs will spend years developing the perfect relationship with their rice farmers to get the best product possible. They ensure it is cooked at the ideal temperature so that the fish almost melts onto and in your mouth.

Another great thing about sushi is that it can be eaten as inexpensively as possible, either from Japanese convenience stores (konbinis) or conveyor belt sushi restaurants. But it also can be one of the most upscale and almost performative meals of your entire life. At high-end sushi restaurants, the chef takes you on a journey with the creations he hands over the bar. You’ve never tasted fish like this before.

And while there is something truly special about those expensive Michelin starred restaurants, the cheap sushi you can get at the corner izakaya is still made from high-quality fish which tastes as fresh as anything you’ve had before.

#3 Konbini Egg Salad Sandwich

I know, I know, an egg salad sandwich sounds like a CRAZY recommendation. I can hear you yelling now, “I came all the way to Japan to eat an egg salad sandwich?! No way!” And I implore you to prove me wrong. I have an entire post dedicated to my love of these sandwiches. Which maybe tells you a little more about my I suppose… But I’m not alone! Famed chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain touted the sando’s magnificence too!

The combination of that oh-so-perfectly soft bread, cut without the crusts and the creamy soft boiled egg salad inside is heaven. Japan doesn’t do the typical North American breakfast (and rightly so), but if you’re looking to eat your egg in the morning, this is a great way to do it.

#4 Okonomiyaki

Okonomiyaki is probably the food I have the most fun with! Okonomiyaki is a dish made from a thick savoury batter that is poured over a hot cooktop. Add into the batter you add shredded cabbage and your choice of ingredients. The classic is filled with pork belly and topped with dried bonito flakes, kewpie mayo (the best mayo in the world) and a sweet brown sauce. The customization of this dish is one reasons I love it since you can get a different mixture every time. There is also a regional variety which includes noodles served on top! Extra yummy

But what makes okonomiyaki so fun is that in many restaurants, you make it yourself! You sit at a table with the hot cooktop, and the waiter will bring over the ingredients. Then, you mix it all up and cook right there on the table in front of you. You can add as much or as little of the condiments as you like to top it off. While some people aren’t fans of cooking your own meal at a restaurant, I LOVE it! It’s such a great way to learn more about the food you’re eating and a great activity to enjoy with your fellow travellers. Don’t worry at all if you don’t know what you’re doing. The waiters are ALWAYS so helpful and will even do it all for you if you really feel like you’re mucking it up.

#5 Bento Box / Ekiben

Bento Boxes and Ekiben are perfectly curated boxes of brightly coloured foods. Each item is placed together to create a complimentary meal to satisfy your every craving. The reason I love them so much is that they look almost too pretty to eat. Every item is carefully tucked away into its own section. “Bento” translates into the English word for “boxed-lunch.” These meals were designed to be eaten on the go. The invention of the bento box dates back to the Kamakura period (1185 to 1333). Back then, they were pretty simple and made mostly to carry rice.

It wasn’t until the late 16th century that the boxes evolved into a more luxurious design during the Edo period. Beautiful lacquered wooden boxes were made to display bite-sized food within. These fancy bento boxes were called the ‘Makunouchi.’ This translates into “between acts” as the lacquered boxes were designed to be sold inside Kabuki theatres and eaten during the intermission. You buy simple bento boxes at every konbini, but you can also buy more specialty ones at shops around Japan.

Ekiben comes from the words “eki,” which means railway station. These bento boxes were designed exclusively for travellers on the railway. Sometimes people needed to travel long distances into big cities for work, so this was an excellent solution for people who needed to eat their dinner on the train. But who didn’t have time to prepare a healthy meal themselves. Ekibens are traditionally meant to be enjoyed on the train from one city to another. If you don’t have any long train journey scheduled, don’t like that stop you! Go to your local train station and pick up one of these gorgeous ekibens. They make for a great picnic outside or even just eaten on your bed in the hotel.

#6 Soba Noodles

Soba noodles are such a simple dish but one that is truly unbelievable to eat. The meaning of ‘Soba’ refers to the buckwheat used to make the noodles. Soba can be eaten both cold and warm. The cold version is actually my favourite. The buckwheat adds a slightly nuttier flavour to the noodles, which I feel like you can taste better in the cold version. They are generally served on a little bamboo tray.

If you ordered the cold version then you can dip the noodles into the sauce provided. The warm noodles are served directly into the bowl of hot dashi broth. Soba is generally served with spring onions, nori (seaweed), as well as a bit of wasabi. Some of my best restaurant experiences have been at soba shops. I don’t know what it is about soba shops but they seem to be run by the kindest people! It makes dining inside a true joy.

#7 Sukiyaki and Shabu-Shabu

I felt I needed to group together Sukiyaki and Shabu-Shabu together as they are very similar, and I couldn’t choose between them both. Each of these consists of cooking your own meat in a hot pot on your own table.

Sukiyaki

The word ‘Sukiyaki’ means ‘cook what you like‘. And this is pretty much exactly what you do. They bring you all the ingredients and appliances and you choose the rest. You can cook the meat as much or as little as you prefer. Or add in tons of veggies or skip them altogether.

The meal is prepared using a shallow pan set on top of a hot fire. You add the meat and veggies into the hot pan first and then top it with the Sukiyaki sauce. The sauce flavours all the ingredients inside the pot as they cook. Once the meat is done cooking you can enjoy it out of the pot or over some rice. One way in which Sukiyaki is traditionally eaten is with a raw egg. When you get to the table you’ll find an egg and a bowl on the side. Crack the egg and beat it in the small bowl. Then dip the hot meat inside before eating. While eating raw egg sounds scary, the meat is so hot it cooks down the egg slightly and gives it almost a buttery taste.

Shabu-Shabu

Whereas Sukiyaki is made in a shallow pot, Shabu-Shabu is made using a deep bot. The word ‘shabu-shabu’ is s an onomatopoeia word for the noise the meat makes when you add the meat and swish it around in the broth. The hot pot is filled with a boiling broth, rather than the rich sauce used in sukiyaki. Into this pot, you once more can add your own ingredients. You add in all your veggies first. Once they have started cooking, you dip the paper-thin shreds of beef into the pot. The water is so hot, the meat cooks within seconds. Once your meat is cooked, you can dip it into a Ponzo sauce to deepen the flavour.

As you add more and more to the pot, the broth gets more and more flavourful. At the end of the meal, you can spoon it out and drink it like soup! In both Sukiyaki and Shabu-shabu restaurants, the atmosphere inside is always so boisterous and fun! Like you were crashing a party already in full swing. These kind of meals are best eaten with large groups but even if it’s just the two of you, you’ll still have a wonderful time.

#8 Curry

Curry was originally introduced to Japan by the British in the late 19th century. But over the years, the recipe has been adapted to the Japanese palette. Their version of curry is completely unique. It is much sweeter than Indian curry and doesn’t have any of Thai curries’ coconut milk. Japanese curry is prepared more like a rich stew with a thick and sweet sauce. Japanese curry is served with rice and topped with any combination of ingredients. Everything from deep-fried pork katsu, crispy chicken to shrimp tempura and assorted vegetables.

Curry shops are everywhere. And the meal is so filling at such a low price. My favourite place to go is CoCo Curry, this shop just seems to add that extra something special which makes their version absolutely addictive. On the table, you’ll find a small jar of pickles. Throw these on as a little savoury crunch needed to cut the grease of the curry.

#9 Yakitori

Yakitori restaurant can generally be found by the smoke and steam billowing out of their doors. Yakitori was invented in Japan in 1682 when it was introduced to the population via a cookbook called “Gouruinichiyo Ryourisho.” In its simplest form, Yakitori is a bite-sized piece of meat skewered on a bamboo stick. The meat is then grilled over a charcoal fire give it that smokey flavour. After being cooked, it is seasoned with either tare sauce or salt. Tare sauce is made of mirin rice wine, soy sauce, sake and sugar. It adds an amazing kick to the fatty meat.

One of the most extraordinary things about Yakitori is that each piece costs about 120 yen. At that price, it’s an excellent opportunity for you to try different items you might have never had before. We ate everything from hearts to livers and even chicken skin! And it was all delicious (well, maybe the liver just wasn’t for me, but that’s a personal preferenced). Yakitori restaurants, unless they are super upscale, are tiny and crammed full of people. Most of the time you’ll eat at the bar facing the chefs cooking the tiny skewers. He places them on the long grill which stretches almost across the entire restaurant! The atmosphere is terrific, and salarymen come in from the bars late at night to fill up on greasy to prevent an early morning hangover. It’s really a party!

#10 Mochi

I had to end the top ten list off with a dessert. And the dessert which still calls my name to this day is Daifuku Mochi. Daifukumochi, or daifuku, is a Japanese sweet made of mochi paste. Mochi is a Japanese rice cake made from glutinous rice, water, sugar and cornstarch. The mixture is pounded into a paste until it can be moulded into the desired shape. The mochi is wrapped around a sweet filling, most commonly sweetened red bean paste. During the springtime, they have my favourite flavour; Ichigo (strawberry). This version is usually only on sale during the spring when the strawberries are in season. But the blend of the rich paste with the tart and sweet strawberry is stupendeous!

Now that we’ve outlined the best of the best, I’ve broken up the rest of the items on the bucket list into different categories. Drinks

Coffee

While Japan might not be the first country that comes to mind when you think of rich coffee culture, you might find yourself to be ultimately in awe of it once you discover it. Unlike the long history of espresso in Italy or Australia’s complex latte culture, Japan has been slowly and quietly assembling some of the best roasters worldwide. Like everything in Japan, they took making the best coffee cup to the extreme. Firstly, Japanese service is the best in the world so their baristas are top-notch. Secondly, they take such care in presenting even a simple cup of coffee. Pour-over coffee is definitely the most popular form of elegant coffee in Japan so if you see a cafe that does the pour-over, head right inside! It’s mesmerizing to watch the baristas take SUCH care to create your morning brew for you.

Macha Tea

Macha is made from the finely ground powder of specialty Japanese-grown green tea leaves. This type of tea is another example of things that can be on the high and low end of the price spectrum. It can be drunk out of a vending machine or in an elaborate tea ceremony using only ceremonial-grade tea leaves. Macha tea is so prevalent in Japan that often in restaurants, you’ll find a small bowl of macha powder right on the table. This is free of charge, and you can have as much as you want! For them, a meal without tea just isn’t a meal.

My favourite way to enjoy a cup of macha is in a tea house, preferably in the middle of a zen garden. The bamboo and tatami-covered rooms have open windows that look out onto the landscape around you. You can sit and enjoy the tea, surrounded by some of the most beautiful sights. In tea rooms, you will also be served Wagashi with your macha tea. Wagashi is a traditional Japanese sweet that provides a beautiful contrast to the bitter tea and mellows out the flavour.

Sake

Sake is one of the most popular alcoholic drinks enjoyed in Japan. The key ingredient in good sake is high-quality rice. The rice is processed with water, koji mould and yeast and fermented until the mixture reaches its optimal flavour. Then it is filtered and ready to be drunk. Sake is known to pair exceptionally well with the umami flavours used in Japanese cuisine. So it’s the best drunk along with a meal. While sake might seem like a luxury drink, you can find sake as cheap as a few hundred yen a glass. At the most expensive restaurant we ate at in Japan, I treated myself to a glass of their specialty sake. And I was shocked to find it only cost 900 yen! The joys of local production.

Umeshu

Umeshu is one of the most incredible liquors I drank in Japan! It is plum wine made from soaking Japanese plums in shochu, sugar and water for years at a time. The result is this almost thick, sweet drink that retains the tang of the plums. Since the liquor is so potent, it is usually served mixed with a bit of soda water. It is very similar to icewine, and since I’m Canadian, I think I really was drawn to the flavour.

Breakfast

Tamagoyaki

Tamagoyaki translates literally to “cooked egg,” which is precisely what it is. This dish is essentially a rolled-up omelette. It is served either on its own, over rice or skewered on a large bamboo stick to be eaten on the go. The egg is whipped into this light and fluffy texture and cooked on a special pan. As each layered cooks, it is rolled over itself. Once it is done, the Tamagoyaki is covered in a light soy sauce. Despite the egg containing no sugar, it tastes so sweet! This dish surprises you at first, as you don’t expect eggs to be so sweet. But the taste is buttery, light and delicious. Most people eat this for breakfast, but it is also a popular item added to bento boxes or chirashi bowls.

Onigiri

The classic breakfast food for many Japanese people is Onigiri. Onigiri is a rice ball formed into a triangle and wrapped in nori (seaweed). The nori wrapping provides a great cover, so your hands don’t get covered in sticky rice. The rice ball is filled with various flavours—everything from tuna, mayo and shrimp, egg and pickled plum. The pickled plum flavour is meatless and an excellent option for vegans. While being vegan in Japan might be more difficult, it’s definitely not impossible. My personal favourite variety is the Mentaiko. Mentaiko means “spicy cod roe.” It’s not too spicy but has the perfect salty kick to get things started in the morning.

Chirashi

Chirashi is one of the most lovely ways to enjoy fresh fish straight from the market. If you visit a local fish market, directly outside you’ll usually find a series of little restaurants, and one of the most commonly served meals is Chirashi. The word ‘chirashi’ means ‘to scatter’. Chirashi contains various bits of sashimi (raw fish), scattered on top of a warm bed of vinegared rice. The dish was invented to use up pieces of the fish that weren’t “pretty” enough to be served as straight-up sashimi.

Many of the fish market workers eat a bowl as their breakfast. In fact, breakfast time is when the fish, which has just been brought out the market floor, will actually be the freshest! So don’t be scared to have a bowl of rice and raw fish for breakfast!

Melon Pan

Melon pan is a sweet bread sold in bakeries and konbinis all over Japan. And despite the name, it actually doesn’t have any melon in it. It’s named as such because its outer later, once baked, resembles a melon’s skin texture. This soft bun is that perfect level of sweetness which makes it great for breakfast.

Snacks

Nikuman

A great side dish for lunch is the Chinese steamed buns, called Nikuman, which you can find inside konbinis right near the counter. These come with fillings like pork, spicy curry, bean paste, Thai shrimp, even pizza! Pizza might sound weird but trust me, the Frankenstein creation is surprisingly delicious! These are little hot pockets of heaven and make for a great lunch on the go. Despite being such a ubiquitous creation they are unbelievable delicious, so don’t let the low price fool you!

Miso Soup

If you have a meal in a traditional Japanese restaurant, almost regardless of the time of day, more often than not, it will start with a warm bowl of miso soup. You might think you’ve had miso soup before, but REAL Japanese miso soup is unreal! Miso soup is made from, surprise surprise, miso paste! Miso paste is made from fermented soybeans.

It might interest you to know that in Japan, there are more miso flavours almost than there are types of soft drinks. The grocery aisles filled with miso paste seem to go on forever. While miso soup is made up of the same ingredients every time; miso paste, dashi broth, tofus, green onions and seaweed, each chef makes it his own. Since the miso soup is what you start the meal off with, it acts almost as an introduction to what’s to come from the cook.

Gyoza

Gyoza was a recipe that Japanese soldiers wanted to recreate for themselves when they got home from China post-World War II. Gyoza is made from thinly rolled dough and filled with pork, cabbage, green onions and mushroom. It is then formed into moon-shaped dumplings. The true test of good gyoza is that hard, crispy bottom and a soft and moist interior. Gyoza shops are everywhere in Japan. You can hop inside and just chow down! These are such great snack options to tide you over throughout the day.

Yakisoba

Yakisoba, for me, feels like a day out at the ballpark. When coming to a baseball game in Japan, you can bring in as much food as you want. Outside the stadiums, there are usually dozens of local vendors selling to-go meals. When we went, we were sure to pick up some fresh Yakisoba. Yakisoba feels like an event-type food. It is ALWAYS present during the summer festivals that pop up all over Japan. Served up on huge cooktops, piled a mile high!

Yakisoba means “cooked soba”. And yet these noodles don’t contain any buckwheat as other soba noodles usually do. The dish was inspired by Chinese fried noodles. When it originally came to Japan, wheat was very expensive. So thinly shredded cabbage was added to fill out the dish, creating a new iconic recipe. Today, Yakisoba is made by stir-frying the cooked noodles, cabbage, carrots, and pork, then topped with the pickled ginger and traditional yakisoba sauce. They are addictive and the best sports game food I’ve ever had!

Kushikatsu

‘Kushi’ translates to “skewers,” and ‘katsu’ means deep-fried, so together Kushikatsu means “deep-fried skewers”. This dish is originally from Osaka but can be found all over Japan. These are served in little izakayas close to the train stations. Kushikatsu makes for a great snack before dinner instead of an entire meal (although you can definitely opt to make it your whole meal as well). You can order pretty much anything deep-friend here, everything from; beef, chicken gizzard, chicken eggs, pork, sausages, shrimp, scallops, octopus, onions, sweet potatoes, lotus roots and lots, lots more!

Like Yakitori, each one of these skewers is relatively inexpensive. So you have an excellent opportunity to try out a bunch of different items you might be curious about. After getting the Kushikatsu dolled out to your table or at the counter, you can dip the sticks into the sweet sauce provided. Or just into some plain salt to really taste the depth of flavour of the item.

Curry Bread

Curry Bread is crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. The dish is made from fried bread filled with different flavours of Japanese curry. You can choose spicy or non-spicy, although my preference and recommendation would undoubtedly be the spicy version. The bread frys up so nicely that these incredible puffs of fried dough dot the exterior of the treat. These are especially good if you’re visiting on a cold day!

Age Manju

“Age” means deep-fried, and “Manju” is a Japanese steamed bun with various fillings. The Age Manju is a deep friend variety of this long-loved treat. The Manju is dipped in a batter coating and fried, warming up the filling inside. These delicious little hot pockets are indeed something that can’t be missed!

Oden

As the perfect entry to your dinner at the konbini, start off with traditional Japanese comfort food, Oden. Oden originated as Japanese-style street food during the Edo period. The dish starts with a richly flavoured soup, and different ingredients are added to it. This adds more flavour and texture to the soup. Unlike other soups, you can actually pick and choose what items are added into your oden, making it a personalized experience. You can choose from things like fish cakes, grilled meat, daikon rashies, hard-boiled eggs, deep-fried tofu coin purses and seasonal veggies. Oden is a favourite food to eat during the colder winter months, but it is on offer all year round.

Karaage

Karaage (aka deep-fried chicken) is a classic Japanese dish you’ll find at convenience stores. Although you can get karaage everywhere, Lawson’s does it best! They serve their Karaage in both regular and spicy nuggets, but let’s face it, if you want the premium version, you go for the spicy! Lawson’s brand is not only the most delicious (in my personal opinion), but their packaging with that cute little chick is adorable!

Senbei

Senbei are round crackers made from rice and mixed with sugar and syrup. The dough is flattened and cut into perfect circles. The crackers are then cooked over a grill of burning coals, giving them a distinct roasted flavour. There are dozens of different flavours of crackers, from sweet, to savoury to super spicy. My favourite was the sweetened seaweed, which had a lovely taste and a beautiful colour from the crispy seaweed.

Takoyaki

Takoyaki is one of the most famous street foods that first originated in Osaka. When translated, Takoyaki means ‘octopus balls’. The dish consists of spherical dumplings made from a savoury batter filled with a bite-sized piece of tako (octopus). Once the batter is cooked, the dumplings are covered in a sweet and savoury sauce, kewpie mayo, seaweed and bonito flakes. The dish tastes very similar to okonomiyaki but with the addition of the tako.

Meals

Kaiseki

Kaiseki or kaiseki-ryōri is a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner. These are often served in Ryokans as your dinner included in your stay. If you aren’t staying at a Ryokan, you can also find Kaiseki meals at specialty restaurants around Japan. One reason why some Ryokans are so expensive is that the fancy meal is included in the price. During the Kaiseki, you will be served a dozen or more dishes, each one featuring local and seasonal specialties.

These are served in small, beautiful ceramic dishes, each one made to compliment the food on top. The plating is thought to enhance the flavour of the food as well. This is one of those meals that is more than the sum of its parts. It is an art form all of its own. This is perhaps one of Japan’s few meals that cannot be found for a low price. But the splurge is definitely worth it. I would advise you to stay in a Ryokan to enjoy the complete experience.

Udon

Like Ramen, which was brought to Japan from China, the origins of Udon also lie in China. Thick wheat noodles served inside a hot soup broth was a meal brought to Japan’s shores in the 700s. Still, it wasn’t until the dish was refined and changed into a uniquely Japanese meal that it gained popularity in the 1700s. Udon’s modern version is thick noodles that are served in a dashi broth, topped with scallions and seaweed. Udon noodles are definitely the chewiest of all the noodles you can find in Japan. I find a bowl of Udon to be the most filling! To add a little bit more oomph to your bowl, top the udon with some freshly made tempura or grilled mochi cakes!

Tempura

Although tempura is often served alongside other dishes, like mentioned above with the udon, it can easily be a meal all of its own. Tempura has been enjoyed in Japan since the mid-16th century. It was one of the favourite dishes of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo era. Although traditional tempura is simply deep-fried shrimp, there are also other fish and vegetable varieties you can sample as well. This is a great way to try out new items from daikon to mushrooms, eel, lotus root and sweet potato. Tempura is often served atop a bowl of rice with a side of warm miso soup. The key to eating fresh tempura is not to let it sit for too long, as this will cause the tempura to get soggy. And no one wants that!

Gyūdon

Gyūdon might be considered “fast food”, often eaten by salarymen on their lunchbreak trying to rush back to work. But I actually think there is something charmingly delicious about this meal. Gyūdon consists of a bowl of beef and onion simmered in a sweet dashi sauce. It is served on top of rice or noodles along with a raw or soft boiled egg and many green onions. The egg yolk adds a creamy, salty, umami flavour to the dish. So much more complex than just a hamburger we get in our fast-food restaurants.

Gyūdon is available at many chain restaurants like Yoshinoya, Matsuya or Sukiya. But you can also find superior Gyudon in restaurants around Japan made with high-quality beef and sometimes even Wagu! Whether you get the high-end experience or an affordable version, you are in for a treat.

Unagi

Unagi is Japanese for “freshwater eel”. I actually think eel might be my favourite kind of fish to have in Japan. Unagi is a dish that dates back to the Edo period in Japan when it was customary to eat at summer festivals. It was thought to help with stamina in the hot weather. When the eel is prepared, the fillets are covered in a sweet soy sauce and broiled over a charcoal grill. The broiling almost caramelizes the sauce and creates this slightly crispy texture to the fish. It is generally served on a bed of rice to make a full meal.

Tonkatsu

Tonkatsu is the ultimate in crispy, fried pork. It is considered “yoshoku,” which refers to a style of food influenced by western cooking. But this isn’t a new invention; the word originates from the Meiji Restoration time in 1898. Like most other yoshoku foods, the Japanese took the original tonkatsu recipe and made it their own. Today, tonkatsu is made by coating pork chops in crisp panko breadcrumbs and deep-frying them until they are golden brown in colour. They are normally served with a large pile of shredded cabbage. The reason for the pairing is that the vitamin inside cabbage balances the gastric reaction that the fats inside the fried pork creates in your body. Just another example of how cuisine in Japan is more than just making things taste good. It thinks ahead and wants to take care of your body as well!

Uni Ikura Don

Although this dish is native to Hokkaido, anywhere you can find a local fish market with fresh uni, you can find Uni Ikura Don. Uni Ikura Don is much like chirashi, but instead of a variety of fish, it contains only uni (sea urchin) and a heaping scoop of salmon roe. If you’ve never had uni before, you definitely should give it a try! Uni does indeed have a strong taste of the ocean and is creamy and buttery in texture. The salmon roe’s crunchy texture is a wonderful contrast to the uni and is what makes this dish such a great combo! While it’s not the cheapest option, you can easily share one bowl between two people as it’s pretty rich.

Wagyu Beef

While Wagyu beef might be a huge splurge at home, since Wagyu comes from Japan, you can eat it here in a much more affordable way. Don’t get me wrong. It’s still costly and not a budget option, but eating local foods is always more affordable; than when they are shipped internationally. Wagyu beef is actually a class of meat made from a variety of Japanese cattle. There are different grades of Wagyu, each of which is progressively more expensive.

Wagyu beef is so good because the meat contains lots of marbled ribbons of fat, making it almost buttery soft to eat. It even has a slightly sweet flavour derived from the fat. Like other types of meat, the Wagyu is served in many different cuts, which also have different prices. Suppose you’re looking to taste some Wagyu at the most low-cost option. In that case, many shabu-shabu or sukiyaki restaurants offer thin slices of Wagyu as meal sets. Because the meat is sliced so thin, you can sample a little bit without it being prohibitively expensive.

Desserts

Taiyaki

Taiyaki is a popular Japanese treat made with a pancake-like batter poured into a mould in the shape of a cute fish. It’s then filled with various fillings like chocolate, vanilla custard or the best of them all, matcha! These are too cute to pass up but also taste delicious. You can also get taiyaki served with ice cream in the centre and the blend of the hot cake with the cold ice cream is fantastical!

Kakigōri

If you’re in Japan during their hot summer, you need to get yourself a Kakigōri stat! Kakigōri is shaved iced, covered in condensed milk or flavoured syrup and sometimes topped with fruits and other little sweets. Although electric shavers have been invented, many local street vendors still use traditional hand-crank machines to serve up their Kakigōri. A massive block of ice is placed inside, and the crank spins around to carefully shave the ice into thin ribbons into the bowl below. Unlike snow cones we have in North America which are dense and crunchy, Kakigōri is as soft as freshly fallen snow and feels like eating a cloud! The perfect way to cool down after a day in the heat!

Creative Ice Cream Flavours

Japan has an obsession with soft-serve ice cream. I don’t know what they do to make it impossibly creamy, but it’s definitely the best soft-serve I’ve had in my life. But what is the best part are the flavours. You can get more than just chocolate or vanilla swirl. There is everything from taro (sweet potato), chestnut, macha, sesame, soda and melon! Never pass up a new flavour to try as some are regional specialties.

Japanese Cakes

Although cakes don’t seem synonymous with Japanese cuisine, Japan has truly made them their own. Japanese people seem to really like their desserts less sweet than we might take them in North America, and I far prefer it that way. Instead of traditional icing, they prefer to use thick, whipped cream to cover their cakes. But what really makes their cakes stand out are the colours, the incredible designs and the sheer artistry poured into a simple slice of cake. Whether it’s at a konbini or a grocery store or even in a cafe, you’ll be amazed at how many flavours there are!

Is there anything not worth eating?!

The one thing which I think gets over-hyped in Japan is KFC. Famously eating a KFC Christmas dinner has become one of the top viral news stories which reappear every December. While Japanese people might love it, I found it was the same, if not slightly worse than the KFC anywhere else in the world. I guess I was expecting it to be somehow different. Somehow deserving of the huge hubbub. But no, it just tastes the same. I would definitely give this one a miss.

I hope this gives you a ton of ideas as to what to eat on your next trip to Japan. There is honestly so much to try, and this city always leaves you wanting more! Don’t hesitate to try new things, ask questions and look for recommendations. Don’t let a restaurant with no English menu put you off. People in Japan are I think the most helpful and generous in the world and anyone you ask will be more than willing to help you interpret menu, even if they don’t speak English themselves. You’d be surprised how much can be communicated with just gestures and the internet!

The fact that there is no hard date for the blooms makes planning your trip in advance very difficult. I’ve known many people who had hopes of seeing the precious petals who missed out by only a few days. Luckily, Tokyo is such a fantastic place that you really don’t feel down for too long. But, if you’ve arrived in time, then there are some absolutely magical places you MUST try to visit. Do all you can to take in all this short-lived season has to offer. Here are my favourite places to see the Cherry Blossoms in Tokyo!

Shinjuku Gyoen

I have an entire post dedicated to the wonder that is Shinjuku Gyoen. This incredible urban oasis located just 10 minutes from one of Tokyo’s busiest neighbourhoods. It is a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle. Unlike some of the other parks on this list, this park does require an admission fee of 500 yen. But seeing as it isn’t free, this means it will be slightly less crowded than the free parks. The park is also enormous. There are plenty of spots to spread out and have a hanami party. The park is also home to three different varieties of sakura trees. Each species blooms at different times in the spring. This means that if you arrive slightly too early or slightly too late, there might still be a few trees here that are blooming!

Ueno Park

Ueno Park is probably the most famous spot for cherry blossom park in all of Tokyo. Since the 16th century, people have been making a pilgrimage to Ueno to soak in the glory of the sakura. This enormous park is home to 800 cherry trees spread over 53 hectares of green space. This makes it an ideal place to set up your hanami party. But even with all that space, this park gets BUSY! If you want to ensure you get a spot on the grass, arrive as early as possible and avoid the weekends. On the plus side, Ueno Park is free to enter.

The park is famous for having some of the best onsite food stalls to delight your taste buds. A fantastic way to taste popular seasonal treats while sitting under the petals. Shinobazu Pond on the south-west end of the park is home to the iconic swan boats. You can rent one of these boats and peddle along the perimeter of the pond. This area is dotted with trees like a colourful pink ring encircling the water. And honestly, who can resist these adorable little paddle boats?

Chidorigafuchi Moat

Chidorigafuchi Moat is the image you might have in your mind who you picture sakura season in Tokyo. This is because this landscape often graces the cover of many a travel guide. It is such an impressive sight that it has become one of the most outsourced images of Japan.

The moat was initially designed to protect the internal grounds of the Imperial Palace during the Edo period. 1,000 cherry trees surround the canal. The branches seem to lean towards the water as if going to get a drink. The sakura trees along the moat are the earliest to bloom in the spring. And the delicate blossoms only open for only a short time. Catching them while they decorate the water is an exceptional sight to see. This area is so popular that it is even illuminated at night. This ensures people can enjoy the blooms no matter what time of day it is. Especially handy for workers who might not be able to see them during their busy day.

The Chidorigafuchi Moat offers another opportunity for getting out onto the water. You can rent rowboats for 700 yen and get a picture of the “sakura tunnel” from below.

Yoyogi Park

Located in the neighbourhood of Shibuy ais Yoyogi Park. Yoyogi Park is one of the largest parks in the city and home to those almost white-hued cherry blossom trees. This park is famous for the large groups it hosts. It isn’t as romantic as some of the other parks and has a more gregarious, party-type atmosphere. If this is your jam, then head over to the park and make some new friends. If you have a bottle of sake in your hand, this is sure way to win anyone over.

Inokashira Park

It is essential to consider heading a little outside of Tokyo’s city center during cherry blossom season. The further away from the most touristy areas, the better chance you’ll have of having more space to yourself. One of my favourite neighbourhoods in Tokyo is Kichijoji. Inokashira Park is a gorgeous place to visit while you’re there to enjoy the cherry blossoms.

If you found the line for the boats at Chidorigafuchi too long, you can also rent one here. Take one of their colourful rowboats out on the water and paddle along the picturesque pond. From here you have such a beautiful view of the cherry trees. There are over 500 sakura trees spread throughout the large park, so it’s easy to walk around and find someplace a little less crowded than in the city center.

Koganei Park

Further west of Kichijoji is Koganei Park. This park is about an hour outside the city but well worth the journey. Koganei Park is home to Tokyo’s most extensive collection of cherry trees! There are over 1,700 sakura trees and over a dozen different varieties as well! On the first weekend in April, a huge festival is held here. At the festival, you can enjoy traditional street food as well as traditional customary dancing and musical performances.

Asukayama Park

Asukayama Park, located on the northern tip of Tokyo, and is a real hidden gem. The further you get away from the city, the more tourists you escape. Plus this area feels most local and less geared towards just tourists. The park here is notable for the colourful lanterns that hang in the trees, which perfectly match the pale pink sakura blossoms.

The center of the park is one of the most unique playgrounds I had ever seen! There was a train yard with old trains on display and a massive play castle in the center. All surrounded by those iconic blossoms. When you head out of the park, back to the city, see if the monorail is running. This track runs above the park and is one of the rarest opportunities to see the cherry trees from above.

Aoyama Cemetery

While suggesting a cemetery to view beautiful cherry trees might seem like an odd combo to some, I find the mixture of death and beauty to be one of the most potent combinations. Located in Tokyo’s Minato Ward, this cemetery has lovely paved walkways lined in hundreds of sakura trees. Creating this blanket of flowers above your head. There is no picnicking or drinking is allowed here. Instead, let this place be an opportunity for a solemn walk of contemplation. Life is short, just like the bloom of the sakura. Live your life to the fullest while you can. And hope that you will have a resting place as beautiful as this, under the sakura trees, when the end finally comes your way.

Sumida Park

In the heart of Asakusa, you’ll find the riverside Sumida Park. Located just off the banks of the Sumida river. From the park’s western side, you can get a shot of the iconic Tokyo Skytree, with a layer of sakura flowers flanked in front.

Since the area of picnicking here is relatively sparse it’s not the best option for a hanami party. And due to the location and popularity, it can get very crowded! My advice: plan to come here for a short photo opportunity and then head off to another location for a longer stay or picnic.

Shiba Park

South of Tokyo Skytee is his rival, Tokyo Tower. And surrounding the tower, you’ll find Shiba Park. Although it’s only home to around 200 cherry trees, the fact you can get a picture with the brightly blossoms in front of the Tokyo Tower’s neon orange structure is a fantastic photo opportunity. This park is actually really interesting and easy to explore. There are so many little treasures hidden in this small space.

Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens

I am in love with the layout and landscaping of Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens. Like Shinjuku Gyoen, this park also requires an admission fee to enter. But just look what you get to experience for only 300 yen! The gardens were created in 1629, making it one of Tokyo’s oldest parks. One of the best parts of the natural playground is the many ponds dotted throughout. Each one creating a mirrored effect, reflecting the image of the cherry trees down, doubling their blossoms. No picnics are allowed in this park, which is the only real downside. But there are several tea houses in the park which offer macha tea and sweets to enjoy. All while under the watchful eye of the sakura trees.

Rikugien Gardens

While Rikugien Gardens isn’t known for its sheer number of cherry trees, the one they do have is creature unlike any other. The 18th century Rikugien Gardens became home to the “weeping cherry blossom tree.” this famous plant grew to be over 20 meters wide and 15 meters tall! When it blooms, it looks like a waterfall of flowers cascading to the ground. At night it is illuminated, making the effect all the most impressive. The cost to enter the park is 300 yen and you’ll find it is more than worth the price!

Yasukuni Shrine

Tucked away, on the edge of the Chiyoda neighbourhood, is the Yasukuni Shrine. The shrine was founded by Emperor Meiji in June 1869. It commemorated those who died in service of Japan in various wars throughout history. There are over 2,466,532 names listed on the shrine to whom it is dedicated. What is usually a reasonably sombre place but a rush of excitement and chatter flood the space come cherry blossom season.

A grouping of trees outside of the shrine light up the street. Vendors from the neighbourhood come down to feed the revellers. The bright white blossoms against the shrine’s copper roof and dark wood exterior make for the most complimentary combination and something not to be missed.

Meguro River

Last, but certainly not least, is the Meguro River. This is maybe the most popular spot for taking photos of the iconic sakura trees. 800 cherry trees blossom along the edge of the river, a stretch of over 3 kilometres. One of the reasons I put this last is that although this place makes for a great photo, the areas on either side of the river are very narrow. It gets super crowded in the spring. And even though the area’s restaurants capitalize on the influx of people and set up food and drink stands, there really isn’t anywhere to easily enjoy eating anything. I think this place is a pop-in and pop-out type of stop and not one to plan your hanami around.

History

Shibuya Crossing has been a busy intersection for over 100 years. With Shibuya Station’s construction in 1885, an influx of people began to commute into the city via this station. Back then, there was only a train line that ran into the station, but now Shibuya station serves more than eight different metro lines. In 2019, the Shibuya Scramble Square, a mixed-use skyscraper, was completed. Becoming the tallest building in Shibuya and was named after the famous scramble.

Access

Shibuya crossing is very easy to find. Just head over to Shibuya station and walk out via the Hachiko exit.

Shibuya Crossing in Film

The crossing has become an essential location in pop culture. It has been featured in movies like “Lost in Translation,” “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift,” and “Resident Evil: Afterlife and Retribution.”

Facing the crossing are three giant television screens. These flash all day long and these screens are some of the highest-priced billboards in Tokyo. Due to the fact that simply so many people come through here daily to lay their eyes on the screens. If you’re interested in seeing what is popular in the world of advertising in Japan, this is a great place to come. 

Where to Observe the Shibuya Crossing

Starbucks Shibuya

One of the best free views of Shibuya Crossing is at the Starbucks Shibuya Tsutaya right on the corner. This location had an elevated level with floor-to-ceiling windows and a viewing counter to sit at. This is people-watching at its best. In recent years the secret has got out, and you sometimes have to queue for over 2 hours to get a seat at the window. But luckily, you’re still in a Starbucks, so grab a fancy drink to enjoy while you wait. Even if you don’t buy a drink, you can still come up here and enjoy the view.

Shibuya Mark City Crossing

Located between JR Shibuya Station and the complex building named Shibuya Mark City is a long, glass-covered crosswalk. This crosswalk is situated slightly above street level but provides an almost entirely unobstructed view of the crossing. Avoid coming here for photos during rush hour since the passageway is used for pedestrians getting on and off the underground. But during off-peak hours this crosswalk is pretty peaceful and a great place to plant yourself.

L’Occitane Cafe

If you’re looking for a location more above street level to get a better look at the crossing, then head over to L’Occitane Cafe. While it might seem weird to dine inside a cosmetic shop, this elegant store has a beautiful cafe on the second floor. Here you can drink tea and cocktails flavoured with the same herbs and fruit they use in their products. The restaurant is located along a large window facing out onto the crossing. From here, you can watch the scramble from the comfort of this adorable cafe.

Magnet Park

To get a bird’s eye view of the crossing, you’ll need to head over to Magnet Park. Magnet Park is located on the top floor of the Magnet by Shibuya 109 building. This location does require an admission fee. It costs 300 yen to access the roof and is open from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm. Although it’s not free, 300 yen is pretty minimal, and the view of not just the scramble but also the entirety of Tokyo itself is stunning! Well worth the 300 yen.

TIP: Don’t visit at rush hour

Many people think the only time to really get the best photos of this crossing is during rush hour. But this time of day only means you’ll be crushed by the crowds of people who cross here. For commuters, this isn’t a show but a legitimate means of getting to and from work. Try to avoid getting in their way. No matter what time of day you come here it’s always busy so you’ll always get a great picture.

For me, one of the best times of day to come to the crossing is at night. When the sun set, the glowing neon lights surrounding the square create such a more powerful image. People are dressed up for a night on the town, and music blares from nearby Izakayas. The atmosphere is unmatched.

So you’re here, now what? I’ve seen some people schedule an hour at Shibuya Crossing and truthfully that’s just not necessary. Seeing the crossing is so fun and iconic but there is plenty more to do around Shibuya.

Hachiko Statue and Mural

An adorable statue of a dog sits right outside Shibuya Station. This statue is dedicated to a real-life dog named Hachiko. Hachiko would come and sit outside the station every day, waiting for his owner when they would return from work. Even after his master passed away Hachiko would come and wait. Akita dogs (native to Japan) are known for their steadfast love and dedication but none more so than Hachiko. The statue has gained a considerable cult following over the years. Today, tourists line up to get a picture with the famed copper dog.

But in my opinion, the brightly coloured mural, also dedicated to Akika dogs is much more exciting. This is located just opposite the statue. The entire piece is more from large tiles and ceramics and features these dogs playing across the tile rainbow. This wall makes for a fantastic photo backdrop. While the Hachiko statue is iconic, the crowds make it less than comfortable while this mural is much more of a hidden gem.

Shibuya 109

Shibuya 109 is the central fixture above the scramble. It is a large multi-level department store whose lights glow brightly, inviting you in. Shibuya 109 is often referred to as the “center of youth“. It is thought to be the epicentre of trendy fashion. When it was built in 1979, the mall aimed to target career women. It was originally designed to appeal to middle-aged women who knew that their fashion sense was and wasn’t just looking for the next big trend. Over the years the clientele got younger and younger. Shibuya 109 became one of the best places to highlight new Japanese brands and designers.

But warned, Shibuya 109 is not for the faint-hearted. The music is blaring from the minute you walk in the doors. The lights and lack of windows make it impossible to tell what the time is. This is a trick used in casinos in Vegas. The employees shout “irrashaimase” (meaning welcome) at any passers-by and enthusiastically beckon you to come inside.

Unlike department stores in North America which are just one big store selling different brands, Shibuya 109 is more like a mall with hundreds of different individual stores. Since this is such prime real estate, only successful brands survive. So you know these the best of the best of Tokyo designers. The owners of the mall make a point to bring in young entrepreneurs and upstart companies. Small brands, which go on to become famous worldwide, often got their start in this very place.

Punyus

Unless you have a similar body size to most Japanese women, you might find it hard to find clothes in your size. If you’re thin and petite, you’ll be in heaven. But for those of us who are tall or curvy, there are not many options. Luckily there is PUNYUS! Punyus is one of the coolest Japanese brands. Their clothes are bright and cheery and they are super inclusive sizing as the brand was started by a plus-size designer. Each item costs around 5,000 yen ($50 US) but they are such unique pieces that you’ll really feel like you’ve bought a piece of Japanese fashion. Something that you could never get at home!

Shibuya Gyoza

Genki Sushi is a name you’ll often hear when looking for food in Shibuya. But I found it to be a little samey and slightly disappointing. The line is usually really long, and I think it’s over-hyped. Instead, walk down the street a little bit to find Shibuya Gyoza. This restaurant specializes in that crispy, thin-skinned gyoza that is super addictive. Six pieces will only cost you 290 yen, so it’s easy to keep ordering more and more.

Can*do

While the Daiso across the street gets much more attention, Can*do is one of my favourite 100 yen shops. Daiso is HUGE. Although I love it, you really need a substantial amount of time to do it justice. Whereas Can*do on the other hand is much smaller and therefore only has the very best stuff! I found that pretty much anything on your list of things to bring home from Japan you’ll find here! Great for souvenirs as well as everyday items and some cool inventions you’ll only find in Japan!

Tokyu Hands

Tokyu Hands is another vast department store, but it features handicrafts, stationary, houseware and more. When I went to Shibuya 109, my husband was very bored since it caters almost exclusively to women. But here at Tokyo Hands, there is something for everyone! Plus, this place is great to see those weird and wonderful Japanese gadgets to bring home and entertain your friends.

Basement Food Hall

Before leaving Tokyu Hands, be sure you make a trip to the basement. Down here you’ll find the entire floor is dedicated to a variety of food stalls. This is one of the largest food halls in the city. You can find everything from tonkatsu, sushi, grilled chicken, tofu products, pickles, deli salads, and all kinds of bento boxes. There is also international cuisine like Indian curries, Vietnamese pho, Chinese dumplings and dozens of Chinese-style main dishes. Honestly, anything you’re craving, you’ll find down here! And at prices so low you can afford to try a few different items!

Center Gai

Center Gai is one of the most popular areas for young people to come at night to party. There are dozens of clubs and restaurants to keep people entertained at all hours of the day. To me, Center Gai is most iconic for those tall, neon signages that hang off the sides of buildings. These are essentially advertisements for all the exciting things found along the street. The streets are always bustling with lively people. Even if you’re not a drinker or partier, the atmosphere along this street is something everyone should experience.

Nonbei Yokocho

Nonbei Yokocho or “Drunkard’s Alley” is located a short 10 minute walk away from the Shibuya crossing. While Golden Gai in Shinjuku has suffered from the over-popularization of its cute miniatures bars, this little alley has the same charm without the swell of people. Although let’s see how long that lasts. Chairs spill out onto the street, and the bars almost seem to be built one on top of the other. Each of them is decorated with brightly coloured signs and paper lanterns to attract in clientele.

Koen Dori

Up from Shibuya Gyoza, you’ll find Koen Dori. Koen Dori means “park street.” The reason for the street’s name is the large, lush trees planted on either side of the road, making the densely urban area seem a little more luxurious. The street is lined with upscale department stores and expensive fashion boutiques. 

Rainbow Karaoke

To finish your tour of Shibuya, head over to my very favourite karaoke place: Rainbow Karaoke. Walking into this place, you might be thinking, “oh wow, this place looks so fancy. I bet it will be super expensive…” But we found that it is really only slightly more expensive than karaoke locations. And none of these are even half as lovely as Rainbow Karaoke and didn’t have the number of amenities offered.

Each of the karaoke suites are designed to look like a fictionalized New York City. They all have their own unique touches and decorations. If you opt for the all-you-can-drink menu, there are so many options! The soda bar is massive and there is even a soft-serve ice cream included in your admission price. This really puts it over the top into amazingness! You can order extra food in your room if you are extra hungry. The song selection is amazing and all the tech inside the room is top-notch!

What is Sakura?

“Sakura” is the Japanese word for cherry blossoms. The pale pink petals are indeed edible. They have a very mild flavour and can be slightly bitter, so they are often paired with sweets as the sweetness balances out the bitterness. The taste is a hint of cherries, while the dominant flavour is very floral.

Sakura Mochi

Sakura mochi is my favourite way to enjoy the taste of the cherry blossom. This is a traditional Japanese sweet made with pink-coloured rice wrapped in a pickled sakura leaf. Often there is also a pickled or sugared sakura blossom placed on top or inside the leaf to add extra flavour. 

While the rice-wrapped Sakura mochi is the most popular, a Kanto-style version is made using a dough flavoured with the Sakura. Red bean paste is placed inside the dough and the entire thing is wrapped up in a pickled sakura leaf.

Sakura-Cha

One of the most delicate ways to have Sakura is in a cup of tea. Sakura-cha (cherry blossom tea) is made with salted sakura blossoms and sugar. It is one of the most prestigious blends, often served at weddings. As sakura blossoms are thought to represent good luck, this is another reason for their popularity at many celebrations. Look for this tea in tea houses and special cafes.

Sakura Kit Kat

One of the most popular souvenirs to bring home for your friends and family (and to eat yourself) is Sakura flavoured Kit Kats. Flavoured Kit Kats are an obsession in Japan, despite seeming like an American import. They have been transformed into hundreds of different varieties, from red bean to peach parfait and even wasabi! In the springtime, we find a variety of Sakura-flavoured Kit Kats in stock pretty much everywhere you go. In the past, they have offered flavours like; sakura mochi, sakura sake and even Sakura macha. You can find these all over the place in convenience stores, Don Quijotes, supermarkets and even at Duty-Free before you get on the plane home. Perfect for last-minute souvenirs!

Sakura Pepsi

While I am admittedly more of a Coke fan over Pepsi, Sakura Pepsi is the one exception. While Coke does come out with some rebranded packaging during Sakura season, the product remains the same. Pepsi, on the other hand, offers this neon pink drink flavoured with Sakura. It’s very similar to cherry Pepsi but perhaps just slightly more floral and a little bit sour.

Sakura Pocky

Pocky is one of the most famous Japanese exports, which people are even addicted to here in North America. Pocky was invented in 1966 by Yoshiaki Koma. The original Pocky sticks are long, thin stick like biscuits which are coated in chocolate. During the Sakura season, the Sakura Pocky sticks are covered in a pale pink, white chocolate flavoured with Sakura. Another excellent idea for souvenirs for friends and family.

Starbucks Sakura Drinks

Every holiday season, Starbucks comes out with a variety of specialty drinks. And Sakura season is no different. In fact, it is one of the most popular times of the year for Starbucks. In addition to the new flavours of drinks, Starbucks always comes out with seasonal merchandise. The sakura merch is known to sell out as soon as it hits the floor, with people lining up well in advance of store openings to ensure they get it! This year the drinks on offer are special sakura berry lattes and frappuccinos. The sakura blend is mixed with strawberry jam for an even more sweet and refreshing way to welcome in springtime.

Cheaper options for Starbucks lovers are the Starbucks konbini drinks. These are made from Starbucks blends but at a much lower price as they are mass-produced and don’t require a barista. In any fridge section of the konbini, you can get the Sakura smoothie. The smooth is flavoured with sakura and mixed with vanilla plus a layer of strawberry jelly on the bottom. It even comes with its own little green straw to drink with, like the stem of the cherry blossom!

Lipton’s Sakura Tea Latte

Another popular konbini drink is Lipton’s Sakura Tea Latte. This uber-sweet beverage is a black tea combined with milk and sakura flavouring. These come in the most adorable pink packaging with lots of sakura flowers on the outside. They are to be drunk chilled so find them in the fridge section of your local konbini.

Sakura Sugar

Another way to bring some sakura home with you is in these souvenir bottles of sakura sugar. These bottles have inside them sugar marinated in sakura flavour and dried bits of the flower itself. This is an excellent centrepiece for your at-home tea & coffee station and makes for an extraordinary gift. These are sold in lots of souvenir shops around Japan, but if you missed out, you could usually find it at duty-free as well.

Calbee Sakura Prawn Crackers

Calbee crackers are a popular everyday snack here in Japan, eaten since 1964. They are made of prawns and potatoes and shaped into iconic sticks. During sakura season, the crackers get a dusting of sakura petals which gives the snack that addictive sweet-salty flavour.

Sakura Sake

Sake is no doubt the most traditional Japanese liquor. It somehow feels more elegant than other drinks. Maybe it’s the beautiful and delicate ceramic glasses you pour the sake into before drinking it. Or perhaps it’s how the clear liquid looks so simple yet has such a deep, complex flavour. But in the springtime, there is the most beautiful version of sake (in my opinion), the sakura sake. This pale pink bottle comes with a whole sakura flower inside, perfectly preserved in the peak of its bloom. These can usually be found inside Don Quijote or other liquor stores around Japan.

Sakura Higashi Candies

One of the oldest forms of candy in Japan is higashi. Higashi are sweets made by pressing fine sugar into simple wooden frames moulded in the form of different seasonal flowers. Once the sugar is dried, it is popped out of the frame and painted with edible colour. These sweets are meant to be eaten alongside a cup of matcha, which can be quite bitter to balance out the candy’s sweetness. During sakura season, these candies are shaped into sakura flowers and flavoured with the delicate taste of the bloom. These can be found in Don Quijote and many confectionary shops along touristy streets.

Sakura-Matcha Cream Collon

Cream Collon is one of the top-selling sweet snacks in Japan. Cream Collon is a cylindrical waffle-style biscuit filled in the center with various varieties of cream. During the springtime, you’ll find the limited edition of Cream Collon that is flavoured with cherry blossoms and, instead of a vanilla wafer, it features a matcha biscuit!

Sakura Tokyo Banana

Tokyo Banana is a popular kind of omiyage which many Japanese people buy to bring home to their friends and family after a vacation. This is considered polite and almost a requirement when you return to the office, almost as a treat for your co-workers who didn’t get to go away. Since you need to serve so many people, omiyage is usually individually wrapped snacks, great for sharing. Tokyo Bananas are little sponge cakes filled with banana custard. During the sakura season, the yellow sponge cake is printed with pink sakura petals. The banana cream is given a hint of sakura flavouring to add to the limited edition cakes.

Sakura Beer

Asahi is the top-selling beer in Japan. Although the beer’s taste doesn’t change during the springtime, they always come out with limited edition designs on their cans and bottles. These feature pretty pink cherry blossom petals and celebratory designs. Other brands also come out with sakura bottle designs so keep your eye open wherever you go. These are a great addition to your hanami party.

Sakura Mister Donut

The Japanese love their donuts. Although donuts seem as American as apple pie, the Japanese have come to love the sweet treat, and the most popular place to buy a freshly made donut is at Mister Donut. In the springtime, they come out with a limited series “Sakura Donuts Menu”. They offer various different kinds of donuts with cherry blossom flavours. These start to come out during the first week of March and continue into early April.

Sakura Mochifuwa Pancake

Mochifuwa pancakes are a favourite treat in konbinis year-round. They are soft pillowy pastries with a layer of butter and maple syrup inside, like a little pancake sandwich. These are coloured with pink food colouring and filled with sakura petals and red bean paste during the springtime. The taste is so delicate and I really like these better than the original.

Sakura Baumkuchen 

Baumkuchen is an adorably shaped dessert which has gained notoriety in Japan despite the dessert’s origin in Germany. The word “Baumkuchen” in German translates to “tree cake,” as the dessert is formed by creating concentric rings of cake that resemble a tree’s rings. Head over FamilyMart in the springtime to find the Cherry Blossom Baumkuchen. It is so soft, like a pillow and perfectly flavoured with cherry blossom syrup.

Sakura McFloat

McDonald’s in Japan offers ice cream floats with any of their soda pops on tap. Something which I’m truly WAITING to come to North America! During sakura season, McDonald’s offers the Sakura McFloat, which is made with a limited edition cherry soda and topped with a swirl of soft-serve ice cream. If you’d prefer the vegan version, without the ice cream, you can always order just the cherry soda without the soft serve.

Sakura Anpan

Anpan is one of the oldest Japanese pastries. It is made from a sweet roll and then filled with red bean paste. Find limited-edition anpans during the Spring inside convenience stores. These are coloured pale pink and topped with candied cherry blossoms.

Sakura Parfaits

One of my favourite desserts in Japan are parfaits. The country seems to love creating these opulent layered treats, which are as colourful as delicious. You can find gourmet sakura parfaits sold at dessert shops and cafes around the city. But if you’re looking for a more affordable version, then the Konbini as they have their fair share of fantastic sakura parfaits.

Sakura Mintia Mints

To keep your breath fresh but on-trend, you need to pick up a pack of Sakura Mintia Mints. These are both floral and sweet and are packaged inside the most beautiful little box. Your breath might be less than appealing but that doesn’t mean the antidote has to be just as nose curling.

Sakura Ice Cream Sandwiches

Inside konbinis, everywhere you go are these huge freezers in the middle of the aisles with hundreds of frozen treats. During sakura season, head over and find one of their sakura-flavoured ice cream sandwiches. These are so delicious as the delicate flavour of the sakura really sings inside the creamy dessert. They also have plain sakura ice cream for those who can’t eat gluten, a great option that doesn’t feel like a sad alternative.

Sakura Royal Milk Tea

Whenever you’re visiting a new country, you NEED to make a point of visiting a grocery store. There are so many incredible things to eat that don’t require an entire kitchen to be found there. I think visiting a grocery store is a great way to get a sense of the real people who live there, not just of the touristy food which caters to visitors.

Grocery stores have lots of neat things you might never have imagined you can bring home as a souvenir or gifts for friends. One of these things is powdered milk tea packs. They come in large bags with lots of small packs inside of instant milk tea. Just pour in boiling water and you have an instant tea latte. During the spring, these come in darling pink packages with sakura flavoured milk tea inside. A great way to keep springtime with you all year round!
