Take a Walking Tour of London’s Christmas Lights

Walking through London’s historic and charming streets, awash with twinkling lights is a magical Christmas experience like no other. 

Find your Favourite Christmas Market

London’s Christmas markets are a festive and enchanting experience for locals and visitors alike to celebrate the holiday season. The smell of mulled wine, roasted almonds, and gingerbread lingers in the cold winter air as you saunter around the alpine chalets. There are various markets you can explore all over the city. Each with its unique atmosphere, making it the right choice for your Christmas trip. We have a dedicated post where you can discover all the details to find your perfect match! Or see them all and judge the best for yourself!

Sing Along at Wednesday Carols on Columbia Road

Columbia Road is a vibrant and eclectic street in the East End that hosts the famous Columbia Road Flower Market. In the winter, the Columbia Road Flower Market is the perfect place to come to find fresh decor for the holiday season. Filling all the stands are boughs of holly, natural wreaths, mini-Christmas trees, poinsettias, holly, mistletoe, and various winter blooms.

Every Wednesday throughout December, the street’s independent shops stay open late. And St Peter’s choir comes out to lead the gathered crowds in carolling. They often drag an entire piano down the street, and trumpet players come out too to participate in the festive fun! The energy is unmatched, and this is my favourite place to come for Christmas spirit! The carols start at 7 pm, so arrive early to get a good spot near the piano. And be sure to stop at one of the shops where you can grab a mulled wine or hot chocolate to keep you warm as you sing.

Skate at Somerset House

The skating rink in front of Somerset House is a beloved and iconic winter attraction in London. Nestled in the courtyard of Somerset House, a neoclassical building on the Strand, this skating rink transforms the historic space into a winter wonderland.

If you don’t have your own skates, fear not. Somerset House provides skate rental services, ensuring everyone can join the fun. After a chilly spin on the ice, visitors can relax inside the Skate Lounge and enjoy a glass of Provence Rosé. Tickets for skating at Somerset House are typically available for purchase in advance. It’s a good idea to book early during the holiday season when it’s a popular attraction.

Indulgence in a Christmas Afternoon Tea

Booking yourself an indulgent Christmas Afternoon Tea in London is undoubtedly one of the most delightful and quintessentially British ways to celebrate the festive season. This cherished tradition combines the elegance of afternoon tea with the magic of Christmas. Many of London’s renowned tearooms and hotels go all out during the holiday season, crafting menus with various seasonal touches. The interiors of these tearooms are all decked out for the holidays. Festive decorations, twinkling lights, and beautifully adorned Christmas trees create a sublime atmosphere.

You can expect to indulge in delectable finger sandwiches with classic fillings like smoked salmon and cucumber but seasonal varieties like cranberry and brie. Next up are the freshly baked scones, served with clotted cream and Christmas-spiced jam. The star of the show is always the festive desserts. Gingerbread cookies, mince pies, and Christmas-themed pastries in delightful festive designs make the place look like a work of art. Each bite is a symphony of holiday spices, making your taste buds sing.

Experience a Victorian Christmas at the Dickens Museum 

Charles Dickens is often dubbed “the man who invented Christmas.” And although this isn’t entirely true, he did help in the creation of many iconic Victorian Christmas traditions we still use today. Located at 48 Doughty Street in Bloomsbury, the Charles Dickens Museum preserves the original home where Dickens lived from 1837 to 1839. In this house, Dickens wrote some of his most iconic works, including “Oliver Twist” and “Nicholas Nickleby.” 

The interiors have been meticulously restored to resemble how they would have looked during Dickens’ time. Complete with period furnishings, decorations, and personal items belonging to the author. But at Christmas, a visit to the museum is even more special. As you step through the museum’s doors, you’ll be greeted by a scene right out of a Dickens novel. The house is beautifully decorated with Victorian-era Christmas ornaments, greenery, and wreaths.

Every nook and cranny exudes the warmth and charm of a 19th-century Christmas, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Throughout the visit, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about various Victorian Christmas traditions. Discover how Christmas was celebrated in Dickens’ time, from the decorations to the food and drink. Don’t miss ending the visit with a stop inside their charming café where visitors can enjoy a cup of mulled wine and a fresh mince pie!

Enjoy the Outdoors at Christmas at Kew Gardens

Located just outside central London, Kew Gardens is a vast botanic garden that comes alive as the sun sets. While people might think of Kew Gardens as more of a spring and summer destination, winter brings an entirely different feel to the grounds. The gardens have been transformed into a winter wonderland with unbelievable Christmas lights and decorations.

The magical winter lights trail leads visitors around projections, tunnels of light, dancing waterside reflections, and trees drenched in jewel-like decorations. The entire experience ends at the famous Palm House, where you can enjoy a cup of mulled wine and mince pie while watching the musical Christmas experience.

Although outside the inner city, you can get to Kew Gardens in under 35 minutes on the tube. The Christmas celebrations start in mid-November and last until the first week of January. Tickets cost £21.50 off-peak hours and £26.50 during peak hours. Tickets sell out fast especially on weekends, so buying them well in advance is advised.

Discover Lavish Treats at Harrods Christmas Food Hall

Harrods, the world-famous luxury department store in London, is renowned for its opulence and grandeur, and Christmastime is Harrods Superbowl. During the festive season, this food hall transforms into a dazzling and decadent wonderland of gourmet delights. Making it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to savour the magic of Christmas in London.

Upon entering the Harrods Christmas Food Hall, you’ll be immediately transported into a world of sensory delight. The hall is lavishly decorated with elaborate Christmas displays, twinkling lights, and beautifully adorned garlands. It’s a visual feast that immerses visitors in the season’s magic.

The selection of festive treats and gourmet delights is nothing short of spectacular. From traditional Christmas puddings and mince pies to luxurious chocolates and handcrafted pastries. All these culinary treasures tempt your taste buds. Although you associate Harrods with ultra high-end luxury, I was pleasantly surprised to find many gourmet gift items weren’t prohibitively priced. Some of my favourite finds were the Christmas Spiced Honey (14£), Harrods Hot Chocolate Tin (13£), and Christmas Spiced Ground Coffee (15£). I also went in a few times to grab some of their Christmas pastries. The mince pie croissant and Christmas spiced scones were out of this world. Both were more expensive than my local bakery, but were some of the most invented and flavourful treats.

Join in with the Christmas Concert at St. Martin-in-the-Fields

A cherished Christmas tradition is carolling. And one of my favourite spots in the city to sing along and be wowed by some talented singers is at St. Martin-in-the-Fields. St. Martin-in-the-Fields church brings the magic of the holiday season to life through the power of music. Located in the heart of Trafalgar Square, this historic church provides a stunning and acoustically rich setting for these festive performances.

The church’s intimate size and charming architecture create a perfect backdrop for the Christmas concerts. With its soaring ceilings, elegant columns, and warm lighting, the church exudes a sense of tranquillity and wonder that complements the holiday atmosphere.

The Christmas concerts at St. Martin-in-the-Fields occur throughout December with candlelight concerts, carols for kids, Advent carols, Handel’s Messiah, Baroque Christmas carols and a Gospel Christmas. Almost all the concerts have a chance for you to sing along, but you’re always accompanied by the church’s renowned choir, the St. Martin’s Voices. Their angelic voices, combined with the church’s acoustics, create a truly transcendent auditory experience. 

Make Your Own Christmas Food Hamper at Borough Market 

A British Christmas tradition is giving and receiving gourmet food hampers. Wicker baskets filled with delicious treats date back to 1066, and Dickens even mentions in The Pickwick Papers “a hamper of spacious dimensions containing cold fowls, tongues, and bottles of wine.” In the 18th century, with the expansion of the railroads, wicker baskets were used to ship Christmas presents to family and friends across England.

The trend caught on, and now, in almost every upscale department store in London, you can find Christmas Hampers filled with gourmet treats. But instead of these pre-made versions, I think it’s so much more fun to make one for yourself! And there is no better place to come at Christmas for seasonal produce and gourmet provisions than Borough Market.

Borough Market Christmas Decorations

Located in the Southwark, Borough Market is a renowned food market which has stood here since the 13th century. During the Christmas season, Borough Market transforms into a festive wonderland, offering an array of special Christmas provisions that capture the spirit of the holidays. The market stalls and surroundings are adorned with twinkling lights, wreaths, and decorations, creating a magical and festive ambiance. The air is filled with the aroma of seasonal spices and freshly baked goods.

What Goes in a Holiday Hamper?

To fill your basket, you want to look for traditional holiday treats like mince pies, Christmas puddings, and, of course, artisanal cheeses. Many of the region’s best cheese producers come to the market with seasonal variations that use ingredients like cranberries, figs, or spices.

 A holiday cheeseboard requires additions like crackers, pickles, honey and chutneys, all of which can be found throughout the market. Sweets and pastries like gingerbread are another wonderful addition to the basket.

You also want to grab a good bottle of mulled wines, spiced ciders, specialty teas, coffees, and hot chocolates to help you warm up on cold days with delightful holiday beverages.

Sip Hot Chocolate inside St. Mary Aldermary Church

Host Cafe located inside St. Mary Aldermary Church, is one of the most unique coffee shops in all of London. Set inside the amazing Gothic interior is a tiny coffee shop which welcomes visitors throughout the year. Here, you can enjoy a fancy latte while admiring the beautiful historic architecture. At Christmas, they feature seasonal delights and decorate the church with charming twinkle lights, Christmas trees and miles of garland. Best of all, the kindest and cheeriest baristas wear Christmas hats to get into the season’s spirit. There really is no better place to warm up on a chilly day in London!

Be Immersed in Christmas Cinema Classics

Backyard Cinema is known for its immersive cinematic experiences. During the holidays, Backyard Cinema hosts a delightful festive extravaganza of classic Christmas flicks! Everything from classics like Miracle on 34th Street, Home Alone and It’s a Wonderful Life to British favourites like Love Actually, The Holiday and, The Muppet Christmas Carol.

But Backyard Cinemas does more than just screen these films; they offer visitors an immersive experience. Last year, to enter the cinema, you stepped into an Arctic Express train carriage to “travel” to the North Pole. After entering the train car, yo watch an immersive show, followed by a walk through a mirror maze and enchanted forest. Entering the cinema, you’re met with winter transformations as a plethora of snow-topped spruce trees surrounds the cinema screen with a fresh dusting of snow on the floor. If you want to grab a mulled wine before the show, you can head to the Big Top Bar. Here, fires roar under the twinkle lights and decorative garlands. It’s hard to leave, but the show must go on!

Give Back to Charity at the Trafalgar Square Carol Sessions

Every year, more than 40 carol groups across London gather in the iconic Trafalgar Square under the great Nordic Christmas tree to sing and raise more for local charities. Performances take place throughout December, starting at 2 pm on the weekends and 4 pm on the weekdays, ending at 6 pm and 8 pm respectively. Trafalgar Square is one of the most emblematic images of London, and getting to experience it at Christmas surrounded by the festive Cheer of carollers is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Fill Up on Sunday Roast in Christmassy Pub

Pubs have been an integral part of British culture for centuries. Many pubs in London have a rich history, some dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. But a pub isn’t only a place to get a drink. It is a local hangout, restaurant and community centre for many residents. It’s a place where people from all backgrounds come together to relax, connect, and enjoy a cherished aspect of British culture. As such, pubs in London decorate their interiors as if they were someone’s home. Christmas trees find themselves crammed into every corner, lovingly decorated, adding to that homely charm.

The best time to go to the pub is on a Sunday to enjoy a traditional Sunday roast. A traditional British roast meal typically consists of roasted meat, usually beef in London, along with Yorkshire pudding, gravy, roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables. It’s so filling, hearty, and the best way to warm up on a chilly winter afternoon. Be sure to pair your roast with a cup of mulled wine to create the optimal Christmas meal!

Dine under Daphne’s Ornamental Roof

One of my favourite Christmas Lights displays is actually located inside one of my favourite restaurants. Daphne’s is located in the heart of Chelsea and is a local favourite for Italian cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. The decor changes slightly every year, but you can always expect Christmas lights and baubles hanging from the ceiling, like dining in a forest of Christmas decorations!

Christmas Carol at the Old Vic

The quintessential Christmas play has got to be Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” For years, the Old Vic, a historic theatre in London, has had a tradition of staging this beloved holiday story. Often, the theatre will secure a famed British actor to take on the infamous role of Scrooge. The sets are so lovingly created and make you feel as though you’ve stepped into Victorian London. Musicians take the stage, and fresh mince pies are enjoyed by the audience, adding to the immersive and enchanting atmosphere. With so much good theatre going on in London, it’s often hard to decide what to see, but this is a no-brainer at Christmas!

Do Your Christmas Shopping at Fortnum & Mason

Fortnum & Mason is a prestigious London department store whose iconic teal packaging symbolizes British luxury and refinement. Fortnum & Mason was founded in 1707 by William Fortnum and Hugh Mason. The company began as a purveyor of fine foods, teas, and other luxury goods, which caught the attention of the British aristocracy. With such endorsement, they skyrocketed to fame. Today, they remain true to their roots, selling premium tea blends, gourmet foods, and home decor.

Their location inside the historic Georgian house on Piccadilly is a destination for London shoppers. At Christmas, a visit here is such an elevated and enchanting experience. From floor to ceiling, the interior of Fortnum’s is one of the most glamorous Christmas interiors you’ll find anywhere in the city. Their world-class food hall sells various seasonal foods popular with food enthusiasts. I loved coming here to get extra special stocking stuffers like shortbread cookies in delightful Christmas tins, seasonal blend teas and even the King’s own blend of coffee.

Take a Trip to Windsor Castle

Only an hour from London is one of the UK’s most prestigious Castles, Windsor Castle. Windsor Castle, located in Berkshire County, is England’s oldest and largest occupied castle. Windsor Castle is a favoured weekend retreat for the British royal family, including newly crowned King Charles III. The castle’s architecture is a stunning blend of medieval, Gothic, and Georgian styles, making it a year-round sight. But Windsor Castle is all decked out with marvellous Christmas decorations during the Christmas season. Fresh greenery, holly, and berries are placed throughout the castle’s exterior, making you feel like you’ve entered a Christmas fairytale.

The State Apartments are completely transformed at this time of year with tasteful decorations and twinkling lights. In various rooms throughout the building are other Christmas trees, each with magnificent themed decorations. The most impressive of the trees is the 20-foot-high Nordmann Fir tree in St George’s Hall. The tree is grown in Windsor’s Great Park and dressed with 3,000 lights, hundreds of iridescent jewel-shaped ornaments, and purple velvet and satin ribbons. Its always an impressive sight. Be sure to check the event schedule online to see if you can schedule your visit during one of the Christmas choir concerts. During these performances local school choirs perform under the Christmas tree.

Immerse Yourself in Hogwarts in the Snow

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, a trip to London isn’t complete without going to the Warner Bros. Studio in Leavesden. A tour of the studios where they shot all eight films gives fans a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the wizarding world. And at Christmas, various sets are dressed for the festive season. Christmas was always an important touchstone in the books, and thanks to this, so many iconic Christmas set pieces make a special appearance in December.

The Great Hall is the centrepiece of the Christmas experience. The decor features the iconic Yule Ball set with its enchanting ice sculptures, snow-covered tables, and festive decorations on the tables. At the end of your tour, you will also be invited to see the intricate and massive Hogwarts Castle model. The model was used for the films, and at Christmas it is covered in rich blanket of snow. Be sure to grab something to eat and drink in the Backlot Café during your tour. I recommend a warm Butterbeer to complete your Hogwarts experience. Book tickets in advance, as this popular event tends to sell out quickly.

Bake with Elves in a Gingerbread Decorating Workshop

This year, St. Martins-in-the-Fields has an extra special offering for kids with their festive gingerbread decorating workshops! Step into their North Pole-themed Gingerbread kitchen, filled with yuletide decorations, where two jolly baker elves help to make Santa’s favourite festive treat: gingerbread! The parents can enjoy a glass of mulled wine or hot chocolate in the Crypt Cafe while the little ones play Gordon Ramsay in the kitchen. There is even a Christmassy sing-song finale at the end of your baking session, leaving you feeling filled with holiday cheer. And, of course, all your baked goods. For the parents,

Attend a Concert at the Royal Albert Hall

The Royal Albert Hall, located in the heart of South Kensington, is one of the world’s most iconic and prestigious concert venues. This historic and architecturally stunning venue, designed by the renowned British architects Captain Francis Fowke and Major-General Henry Y. D. Scott, is a masterpiece of Victorian architecture. Every year, the venue hosts a series of Christmas-themed programming that is bound to get you into the Christmas spirit. Best of all, there is something for everyone, from classic Christmas films accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to Gospel Choirs and evenings hosted by British entertainment royalty like Dame Judy Dench.

Go Back in Time at Hampton Court Palace’s Festive Fayre 

The magnificent palace of Hampton Court was built by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in the 16th century. But it wasn’t long after that King Henry VIII seized the palace for himself. Hampton Court became one of his favourite residences. It went on to be known for its opulence and blend of Tudor and Baroque architectural styles. Today, the palace is open to visitors, where they can explore the reconstructed rooms, lavishly decorated to reflect what life was like for the aristocracy in the 16th century.

This year, Hampton Court is hosting a festive Christmas fair on two weekends in December. The Festive Fayre is held within the palace’s stunning grounds, where food lovers can dive into gourmet treats, holiday favourites, locally crafted beverages, and seasonal delicacies. All set against the picturesque and historic backdrop of Hampton Court. Tickets to the Festive Fayre should be purchased in advance as the market is only open on December 1st – 3rd and 8th – 10th.

If you can’t make it out to the Festive Market, consider going out to the palace to enjoy an evening ice skating. Hampton Court Palace sets up an outdoor ice skating rink within its grounds where visitors can put on a pair of skates and glide around outside the illuminated historic palace.

Bring the Family to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park

The once placid Hyde Park is transformed into a spellbinding and whimsical wonderland at Christmas. Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is a dazzling festival of lights and decorations, a bustling Christmas Market and action-packed amusement rides. You can come here with the whole family and find something for everyone.

The park is filled with food stalls offering a diverse range of cuisine. You can indulge in traditional British fare like roasted chestnuts, mince pies, and international dishes from around the world. Don’t forget to sample the mulled wine and hot chocolate to keep warm. The iconic skating rink invites visitors to enjoy some delightful Christmas music as they skate with their loved ones. Winter Wonderland hosts live entertainment and shows, including circus performances, ice shows, and concerts. These performances add to the festive spirit and entertain the whole family.

Find the 12 Days of Christmas inside the Tower of London

The Tower of London, a historic fortress nestled along the banks of the River Thames, is an enduring symbol of Britain’s medieval grandeur. With a lineage that spans nearly a millennium, this iconic structure has served various roles over the centuries. It was a royal palace, a prison housing infamous inmates like Anne Boleyn, and a treasury guarding the Crown Jewels. 

Visitors can experience a magical transformation at Christmas with enchanting festive displays throughout the renowned fortress. As you explore the iconic castle, try to find all the 12 Days of Christmas brought to life in a distinctive Tower of London manner. The five gold coins represent the Tower’s original home to the Royal Mint. Find the twelve Yeoman Wardens and the nine rowdy ravens. And, of course, the Seven Wifes of Henry VIII. Beautiful Christmas trees pop up around the perimeter, and traditional decor brings a festive touch to the ancient fortress. 

Dance The Night Away at the Nutcracker

For many Londoners, going with the whole family for an enchanting night out at The Nutcracker, is a popular Christmas tradition. Tchaikovsky’s beloved Christmas classic follows little Clara, who is gifted an enchanted Nutcracker. Clara and the Nutcracker enter a mystical realm to battle the Mouse King. The show, set against an incredible live orchestra, is a fantastic experience and a great way to support the British artistic community.

Sample the M&S Christmas Range

Every August, British supermarket Marks & Spencer (M&S) announces its new Christmas range of products. Influencers are invited to their Christmas 2023 preview; admission to this is considered as big as tickets to the coronation! M&S Christmas range offers travellers some great budget-friendly gift options that feel high-end! Everything from adorable Christmas jumpers (sweaters), Percy Pig Christmas sweets, chocolate popcorn wreaths and bring-home figgy pudding. One of my favourite items was the musical shortbread biscuit tin. inside are some traditional British shortbreads and the tin lights up to reflect the starry night sky.

Tips for Exploring London’s Christmas Lights

When do the Lights Turn On?

In November, the lights start to be turned on, and they are kept up until early January. Thankfully, the sun goes down earlier in the winter, so the lights turn on around 5 p.m. This means you have lots of time to explore the illuminated city after the sun sets!

When is the Best Time to See the Lights?

If you want to avoid the huge Christmas crowds, you’re better off planning your trip in November. And be aware that weekends will be much busier than weekdays. I loved going out after dinner on a weeknight to explore the stunning laneways as a perfect nightcap to end a lovely evening.

But personally, I LOVED being right in the centre of London during the week leading up to Christmas. There was such a palpable atmosphere, with people flooding the streets and busy shoppers rushing around to finish getting everything on their Christmas lists. There really isn’t a bad time to come, just expect the crowds.

Trafalgar Square

We will start our tour in one of the most iconic spots in London: Trafalgar Square. Trafalgar Square is perhaps the most famous public square in the UK. It is in the centre of Westminster, just steps from many of the most iconic buildings in London. The square was built in the 19th century to honour the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. During this battle, the British navy captured a difficult victory against the Napoleonic off the coast of Cape Trafalgar. Nelson’s Column stands in the centre of the square. It towers over the rest of the courtyard at 169 feet tall and is guarded by four lion statues.

While the column is usually the tallest structure in the square, the colossal Christmas tree installed in the yard gives the column a run for its money. Since 1947, Norway has gifted the city of London with regal Norwegian spruce. The first tree was a gift to thank the British for their support during World War II. They decorate the tree in a simplistic Norwegian style, with only a few lights strung vertically yearly. It is erected 12 days before Christmas and remains in the square until 12 days after Christmas. Making the square even more festive is the fabulous Trafalgar Christmas Market. Over 20 stalls sell everything from Christmas ornaments, jewellery, hand-crafted goods and lots of sweets!

St. Martin-in-the-Fields Winter Lodge

Walking north up Charing Cross Road, stop behind the historic St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church, where they host a Winter Courtyard Bar inside a cozy winter lodge. You can sit beside a roaring fire and enjoy Christmas cocktails, mulled wine & cider, hot chocolate, beers, and seasonal snacks. The winter lodge is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout December. This is the perfect way to warm yourself up for the rest of the evening.

Leicester Square

Continuing along Charing Cross Road, cut through Irving Street and west towards Leicester Square. Leicester Square transforms itself at Christmas into a charming (although frequently very crowded) Holiday Market with alpine-style stalls and chalets. Hanging from the trees above are sparkling twinkle lights in the shape of giant snowflakes, which create a magical atmosphere in the heart of London. The various stalls in the market sell Christmas-themed goods, crafts, gifts, and holiday treats. If it’s not too busy, this is a great place to grab roast chestnuts or German Bratwurst.

Newport Place | Chinatown

Walking north from Leicester Square, cut across Cranbourn Street and up Leicester Court, past Lisle Street, to Newport Place. You’ll notice almost immediately the hundreds of Chinese paper lanterns hung throughout the entire Square that announces your entrance into London’s Chinatown. Chinatown is a vibrant and culturally rich neighbourhood home to diverse Asian cultures. Traditional Chinese elements are embedded in the architecture and signage, and the iconic red and gold colour scheme is used throughout the area. At Christmas, they even add some sparkling white twinkle lights to the trees around the Square, creating a beautiful blend of the two cultures.

Seven Dials

Walk through Chinatown along Gerrard Place, then turn onto Shaftesbury Avenue towards the infamous Seven Dials intersection. Seven Dials is a circular junction where seven streets converge, giving the area its distinctive name. It’s one of the liveliest parts of London, and at Christmas, their light displays are so dynamic. The central column is surrounded by starry snow globes lighting your entry into the Seven Dials.

Along the converging streets are vibrant pink and silver lights hung above the cobblestone streets. I love the modern take on the Christmas lights juxtaposed against the Victorian buildings.

Pick & Cheese

If you’re looking to grab a quick snack, head into the Seven Dials Food Market, which is also captivatingly decorated with Christmas lights. This chic multi-level food court is home to dozens of micro-restaurants & bars. My favourite is the Pick & Cheese Cheese Bar, the world’s first and only cheese conveyor belt restaurant. Here, you can pull up to the bar and admire their array of British cheese pairings swirling around under glass domes. Once you find one that catches your fancy, simply pull it off the belt and enjoy! At Christmas, they have specialty pairings that feature everything from Christmas Cheddars, pickled apples and brussel sprouts, fruits and soaked raisins.

St. Martin’s Courtyard

Walk back west along Shelton Street to St. Martin’s Courtyard. St. Martin’s Courtyard is hidden away, just off of Long Acre Street in Covent Garden. Walking into the courtyard, you pass under the most incredible oversized holly wreaths covered by bright white twinkle lights. The holly leaves seem to spill onto the street as boughs of garlands wrap around the shop windows.

Conduit Court

Passing one courtyard, make your way shortly across Long Acre and then through Conduit Court. Conduit Court is a historic alley connecting Long Acre to Floral Street. Industrial warehouses and small factories initially occupied this area. But in the mid-19th century, Conduit Court’s buildings were turned into commercial businesses. In recent years, an art installed called the “infinity chamber” takes visitors through a series of mirror-clad arches lit up with changing coloured lights. It’s a mesmerizing little cut-through.

King Street

Exiting onto Floral Street, cut across Rose Street towards King Street. King Street, a cobbled gem within the heart of Covent Garden, is a captivating blend of old-world elegance and modern sophistication. The street’s enchanting architecture, characterized by Georgian and Victorian facades adorned with charming bay windows and ornate ironwork, is a testament to London’s architectural heritage. And at Christmas, all the boutiques and artisanal shops go all out with their Christmas light displays.

St. Paul’s Church

Across from King Street, you can enter a side entrance into St. Paul’s Church. St. Paul’s Church is a secret spot inside Covent Garden, affectionately known as The Actors’ Church. It features a modest Christmas light display but is set in the most peaceful setting. Make sure to stop in and look at each of the benches lining the garden pathways dedicated to famous actors from London. St. Paul’s Church Covent Garden is a favourite among Londoners. Famed singer Gwen Stefani was even married to her first husband, Gavin Rossdale, in this church.

Covent Garden

From the church, make your way into the old Covent Garden Market. This historic marketplace is steeped in centuries of tradition, but at Christmas time, it is one of the most festive centres in London. The market’s elegant piazza, adorned with neoclassical architecture and lively street performances, is brimming with twinkle lights, Christmas trees, oversized wreaths and the smell of mulled wine emanating throughout the air.

Also, outside the Piazza, you’ll always find some special exhibitions. In years past, there was a special Frozen Christmas Village, and last year, Dolce and Gabanna set up a multicoloured light display that made for awe-inspiring photos!

Apple Market

Covent Garden’s Apple Market dates back to the 17th century when it was a bustling fruit and vegetable market. Today, it houses a crafts and antiques market. Walking inside, you will be overwhelmed by the fantastical giant silver and gold disco ornaments hanging from the ceiling, creating a kaleidoscope of lights reflecting off every surface. Oversized mistletoe chandeliers also dangle above, inviting romantic Christmas kisses.

Covent Garden Christmas Tree

You’ll find the mammoth Covent Garden Christmas tree outside the Apple Market! This Christmas tree is the largest hand-picked tree in all of London. In addition to this, the tree was grown at the same tree farm where the Royal family gets their Christmas trees. So it’s perhaps the poshest tree in London as well! It takes organizers over 300 hours to decorate the tree. And they even used a cherry picker to get those baubles to the top.

The area outside near the Christmas Tree is where visitors can get the chance to see “snow” falling in London. The snow falls every hour on the hour, so arrive accordingly. Sure, it might be fake snow made of soap, but how everyone erupts with delights and how magical it makes the space feel is all that matters!

The Strand

Make your south of the square, onto Southhampton Street, which lets you exit onto the famous Strand. This is a historic and prestigious thoroughfare that runs along the northern bank of the River Thames. All along the street, you’ll find famous landmarks and renowned institutions. At Christmas, they hand these beautiful light displays shaped like blue and gold ornaments hanging above the road. One of the best parts of this area is looking at the iconic red double-decker bus driving under the sparkling Christmas lights.

Somerset House

To finish the evening, continue along the Strand, past Landcaster Place, entering through the Northern arches to enter Somersert House. The Duke of Somerset once owned the property, but today, the building is often used to host events centred around arts and education.

At Christmas, the square is transformed into a giant fairytale-like ice skating rink. A massive 40-foot twinkling Christmas tree stands watch over the skaters. At night, the rink is illuminated in multicoloured lights, which create a magical atmosphere and highlight the architectural beauty of the building itself.

If you feel like putting on a pair of skates, this is a great opportunity to enjoy an iconic Christmas activity set in a historic London landmark. The best way to end a perfect evening exploring central London’s Christmas Lights!

TIP: Public Transport is Closed on Christmas Day

Before you start planning your Christmas morning adventures, a word of caution: there is no public transportation in London on Christmas Day. This includes buses, trams, London Underground and London Overground trains. Ubers are available but are priced at a premium due to the reduced number of cars and high demand. You might be able to hire a taxi, but they are very few and far between to find on the street. This means you’ll need to walk to your destination unless you have a car. London is a very walkable city, but just be sure to keep this in mind when thinking about your day. If you must be at St. Paul’s Cathedral at 9 a.m. and stay in Kensington, be prepared to leave the house at 7 a.m.

Consider Renting a Bike

Another option for transport on Christmas Day is to rent a bike. Santander Cycles is London’s official hire bike service, with over 800 docking stations and 12,000 bikes around London. Each ride costs £1.65 to undock your bike, and you can ride for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, you’ll be charged an extra £1.65 for each additional half hour. There are also e-bikes available in select stations. They cost £3.30 for 30 minutes. After you ride, you must return the bike to a docking station. Maps of the docking stations can be found on the app and online.

You can take out a bike using your bank card at the docking stations or download the Santander Cycles app. I prefer the app only because it’s often easier to use with foreign credit cards than the machine. 

Because the roads are often less busy on Christmas Day, it makes it a little less intimidating to use as a first-time user. London has many dedicated bike lanes for you to use; check out this map to find the best route for your Christmas Day adventures!

Take a Guided Christmas Walking Tour

One of the best ways to experience Christmas Day in London is by taking a Walking Tour. If you prefer a Guided experience, London Walks has two specialty tours that only run on Christmas. The first is the Christmas Day Charles Dickens Walk. This tour leads guests on a tour of London inspired by the life and works of Charles Dickens. Being the “man who invented Christmas,” it seems very fitting to spend the afternoon walking in his footsteps. You will be able to discover Victorian hideaways unchanged since Dicken’s day.

The other tour by London Walks takes visitors back to Christmas 1660 in the footsteps of London’s greatest diarist, Samuel Pepys. Between 1652 and 1660, Christmas, but after the death of Cromwell, Christmas was back in full swing! What a time to look back at one of the greatest Christmases in London’s history.

Explore Any Borough on a Self-Guided Walking Tour

If you prefer to take a self-guided tour, you can explore any neighbourhood around London with many available guides online. This is a wonderful way to spend a quiet morning or afternoon with friends. Discovering hidden parts of the city on one of the quietest days in the calendar year. A British tradition for many Londoners is to take a Christmas walk, so it feels very in the spirit of the holidays to participate!

See All the Christmas Lights

While the stores all might be shut, the Christmas Lights around London stay on! And the light displays in this city are some of the very best productions you’ll find anywhere in the world. So head out armed with a cozy Christmas sweater, an oversized scarf and hot thermos of tea to explore different neighbourhoods around the city to soak up all that glittering festive Christmas atmosphere.

Attend a Chrismas Morning Church Service

Whether you are religious or not, attending a Chrismas Morning Church Service is a very special and unique experience. And one that I always recommend. If attending church triggers you or makes you uncomfortable, skip it. But I found that tourists (so long as they were respectful and didn’t just stand there taking pictures) were more than welcome in church on Christmas Morning. 

Christmas Morning services are three of London’s most famous churches: St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and St Martin’s-in-the-Fields. I recommend attending the Parish Carol Service or Festal Evensong as the choirs at all these churches are some of the best in Britain. Hearing them sing in these historic buildings is truly an ethereal experience. 

Be sure to check their website for the exact times of each service on Christmas Day. And be prepared to arrive at least an hour in advance to line up (or queue up as they say in London) to ensure you get a spot inside as this is, after all, one of the most popular days for families to all attend church together.

Enjoy a Very Special Christmas Afternoon Tea

Select hotels and tea rooms around London offer up Christmas Day Afternoon Tea. These reservations get booked up months in advance! Make your booking as early as possible to avoid disappointment. If you find reservations are booked up, consider going in person and asking if they can add you to their waitlist. Christmas (or winter in general) is when lots of people get sick and need to cancel at the last minute, so you never know when you might get called in at the last minute!

 Christmas Day Afternoon Tea at the Ruben’s

My favourite place to go for Christmas Day Afternoon Tea is the Ruben’s at the Palace. Their Christmas Day Afternoon Tea is specially curated by their executive pastry chef, Sarah Houghting, who was a finalist in the 2021 Bake Off: The Professionals. The three-course menu features a scrumptious feast of cakes, pastries, and seasonal flavours that pay tribute to the long-standing English tradition of Afternoon Tea. You’ll be greeted with a glass of mulled wine or a glass of Champagne. Set against the tranquil backdrop of live piano music, playing all your Christmas favourites feels like the perfect way to spend Christmas Day in London!

Christmas Day Prices: £105 per adult, including a glass of champagne; £55 for children under 12.

Alternative options for Christmas Afternoon Tea can also be found at the Hotel Cafe Royal.

Take a Walk in the Park

Because it usually doesn’t get below zero on Christmas Day, a brisk walk in one of London’s many historic parks is a great way to get outside and explore London’s green space. While the trees may be bare, I was surprised to find many gardens still beautifully manicured and a lovely place to stroll. My favourite park is Kensington Gardens, and their Italian Gardens are a picturesque and serene oasis. You can admire the stunning ornamental water garden with classical sculptures, urns, and a reflecting pond. Even in the winter, you can spot waterfowl, making it a peaceful place for birdwatching.

Watch the Peter Pan Cup

Every year, at 9 a.m. on Christmas Day, members of the Serpentine Swimming Club leave their home’s cozy comfort to participate in one of London’s strangest (and chilliest) traditions. They meet at the Serpentine Lido (open-air swimming pool) in Hyde Park to jump into the waters for a 100-yard swim. The traditions have been going on since 1864, and the race winner gets to take home the coveted Peter Pan Cup. Swimming usually gets into the Christmas spirit by donning silly Christmas hats and sant beards to pair with their swimming trunks. Watching this event is so much fun, as long as you do not have to get into that cold water!

Take a Boat Ride on the Thames

Sights along the Thames River are a constant, and even when the city is closed, their iconic imagery along the water doesn’t change. City Experiences London runs a 1-hour River Cruise along the Thames on Christmas Day. Visitors can enjoy informative and entertaining commentary all about the historic riverside as they glide along. While it might be chilly on deck, the interior of the boars is heated for your comfort. But I recommend grabbing a hot mulled wine and mince pie to eat on deck to soak in the views.

Luxury Christmas Day Meals

Many of London’s premier hotels have specialty Christmas Day menus on offer. These reservations are booked far in advance but cost a pretty penny. Be prepared to spend a hefty sum, but the food quality and overall experience are unmatched. These hotels often cater to guests staying for the Christmas holidays, so they want them to feel like this is a meal made with love, just like they would get at home. But with a refined level of excellence and service.

Restaurants Open on Christmas Day

Savoy Grill | If you’re looking for a bucket list dining experience, consider booking yourself in for an unforgettable dining experience at Savoy Grill. The Savoy Grill, one of the most renowned eateries on The Strand and in the world, has undergone a historic renaissance, making it an even more famous dining destination than before. Their Christmas Day specially curated menu features traditional yet refined dishes that will delight the palette. | Price: £290 per adult and £100 per child 

NoMad London Christmas Lunch | Celebrate Christmas at NoMad London with their three-course pre-fixe, which showcases iconic Christmas staples and NoMad favourites. | £155 per person, and children (up to 12 years old) pay £75 per person. 

Orrey Restaurant | Located in the heart of Marylebone Village, the Orrey Restaurant celebrates Christmas Day inside their lavish converted stable block overlooking Marylebone Church Gardens. You’ll enjoy elegant French food for your Christmas meal, including salmon gravadlax, fromage blanc, orange Potato raviolo, wild mushrooms, Beef Wellington, pomme purée, Farmhouse cheeses, the classic Orrery tart, and, to finish, mulled wine sorbet and Petit fours. | Price: £159 Wine Pairing £105

Rubers Hotels | The menu features duck terrine, lobster thermidor omelette, black leg turkey, Scottish beef fillet, pork & apricot stuffing, pigs in blankets, honey glazed carrots & parsnips, brussels sprouts and homemade cranberry sauce, followed by a dessert of traditional Christmas pudding or British cheese board. | £250 per person

Causal Dining on Christmas Day

If you don’t want to spend a mint, there are various other options for more casual dining. Cinnamon Club is a fantastic Indian restaurant in Westminster that is always popular with Christmas day crowds. Duck and Waffle in Spitalfields is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even on Christmas Day! Perched in the clouds on the 40th floor of 110 Bishopsgate, this is also one of the best restaurants with stunning views across the city. Tayyabs is my favourite place in Whitechapel for incredible Indian food, open on Christmas day. 

Pubs Open on Christmas Day 

Wetherspoon is a chain of pubs across the UK, and many of their locations in London are open on Christmas Day. Call or check online for your local Wetherspoon’s to see if they will be available. They are an excellent choice for families as their extensive menu means everyone can find something to enjoy.

Fuller’s Pubs has beautiful pubs all across southern England, and at Christmas, four of their London locations remain open for a gorgeous Christmas Roast Meal. The Lamb & Flag in Covent Garden, The Sanctuary House Hotel in Westminster, The Star Tavern in Belgravia and The Swan in Hyde Park. A three-course meal on Christmas day is still £95, but you can always opt for the a-la-carte menu for something less expensive. Be sure to book in advance, if possible, to ensure yourself a spot!

Explore Chinatown

As is the case in many cities around the world, Chinatown is a popular destination on Christmas Day for those looking for something delicious to eat. London’s Chinatown has over 100 restaurants in only five square blocks, many of which remain open on Christmas Day. Rather than turkey, mince pies and mulled wine, you can get roast pork buns, sweet bean pastries and bubble tea here in Chinatown!

What to Wear

When venturing out to see the Christmas lights in London, it’s important to dress for the weather. While Winter in London isn’t as cold as other cities around the world, it can still get quite chilly, so dressing appropriately is essential to enjoy your festive outing.

• Layered Clothing: Layering is key to staying warm. Start with a thermal or moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Add a warm sweater on top.
• Winter Coat: Invest in a good-quality, insulated winter coat to provide warmth and protection from the cold. A waterproof coat is best to protect against the rain. Look for one with a hood to keep your head warm and dry.
• Hat: A hat or beanie is essential to prevent heat loss from your head.
• Scarf: A thick, woollen scarf can keep your neck warm and be pulled up to cover your face if necessary.
• Gloves: Opt for insulated, waterproof gloves or mittens to keep your hands warm.
• Thermal Leggings: We had days below zero last year, which is pretty rare for London, but on days like this, you should wear thermal leggings under your pants to add an extra layer of warmth.
• Warm Socks: Invest in warm, moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet cozy. You can even wear two pairs if it’s exceptionally cold.
• Waterproof Boots: Choose waterproof boots with insulation to keep your feet dry and warm. Ensure they have good traction to prevent slipping on icy or wet surfaces.
• Hand and Foot Warmers: For extremely cold nights, consider using disposable hand and foot warmers that can be placed in your gloves and boots for extra warmth.
• Umbrella: London’s winter weather can be unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to carry a compact, windproof umbrella in case of rain or snow.

Bond Street

Old and New Bond Street are home to some of the most prestigious and expensive shops like Tiffany & Co, Sotheby’s and Bonhams. The Christmas installations along Bond Street are made to look larger-than-life! Framing the entire street, are these twinkling designs made to emulate peacock feathers.

The peacock feathers honour a group called the Bond Street Loungers, who, in 1820, became well-known for their fabulous fashions. They often wore expensive wigs and were seen strutting up and down Bond Street as if they owned it. They were also often called the “peacocks,” and the Christmas lights shine on to commemorate their daring fashions.

Above the intersections are these amazing crowns that incorporate those same peacock designs but so subtly that only those in the know will see them.

Many of the high-end shops on the street go ALL OUT. Cartier, Fenwick, Dior, Stellar McCartney and Ralph Lauren are just some of the incredible shops that spend thousands on decking out this exterior facade for the holidays. Despite being some of London’s most expensive shops, you don’t need to spend a dime to enjoy their beautiful lighting displays.

Regent Street

Regent Street was named after King George, the Prince Regent who reigned over England from 1820 to 1830. The sweeping curve of the street, the ornate facades, and the regal terraces make it a timeless icon of London’s magnificence.

The Regent Street lights are my favourite Christmas light installation. Soaring above the passersby are these giant “spirits” with sparkling wings. Many people refer to these as angels, but they are, in fact, officially called the spirits of Regent Street. 

The decorations were inspired by historic Christmas lights displayed initially on Regent Street that featured traditional angels playing trumpets. The illuminations were created with the input of the Crown since Regent Street is owned by the Royal Family, and they must approve everything. The spirits are made up of over 300,000 lights. Their golden 17-meter wingspan reaches across the entire length of the street. Watching over delighted shoppers. The lights glitter and flash, giving the effect of the fluttering wings. Almost as if they could simply take off at any moment.

Covent Garden Apple Market

Covent Garden’s Apple Market dates back to the 17th century when it was a bustling fruit and vegetable market. Today, it houses a crafts and antiques market. Walking inside, you will be overwhelmed by the fantastical giant silver and gold disco ornaments hanging from the ceiling, creating a kaleidoscope of lights reflecting off every surface. Oversized mistletoe chandeliers also dangle above, inviting romantic Christmas kisses.

Seven Dials

Seven Dials is a circular junction where seven streets converge, giving the area its distinctive name. It’s one of the liveliest parts of London, and at Christmas, their light displays are so dynamic. The central column is surrounded by starry snow globes.

Along the converging streets are vibrant pink and silver lights hung above the cobblestone streets. I love the modern take on the Christmas lights juxtaposed against the Victorian buildings.

Churchill Arms

Undoubtedly, the Churchill Arms is the most festive pub in the entire city. They put the rest of the city to shame with their incredible outdoor Christmas lights displays. The Churchill Arms is located in Kensington, just minutes from Kensington Palace. Kensington is one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in London. It is home to many international embassies and consulates and the residence of many politicians and billionaires. The pub dates back to 1750 and is named after Sir Winston Churchill, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945. The pub was even one of Churchill’s grandparent’s favourites when they lived there.

During the Christmas season, the pub is adorned with over 80 real Christmas trees literally hanging off the side of the building. It almost looks like something about Whoville. It requires over 130,000 lights to cover the exterior and takes over a month to install. While some might think it’s a bit tacky, I love how over-the-top they go with their designs. And I cannot wait to see how it gets more elaborate over the years.

Christmas at Kew Gardens

Located just outside central London, Kew Gardens is a vast botanic garden wonderland that comes alive as the sunsets over the city. While people might think of Kew Gardens as more of a spring and summer destination, winter brings an entirely different look and feel to the grounds. The gardens have been transformed with unbelievable Christmas lights and decorations for visitors to explore.

The magical winter lights trail leads visitors around projections, tunnels of light, dancing waterside reflections, and trees drenched in jewel-like lighting in all different colours. The entire experience ends at the famous Palm House, where you can enjoy a cup of mulled wine and mince-meat pies while watching their musical Christmas experience.

Although outside the inner city, you can get to Kew Gardens in under 35 minutes on the tube. The Christmas celebrations start in mid-November and last until the first week of January. Tickets cost £21.50 off-peak hours and £26.50 during peak hours. These tickets get sold out faster than you might expect, especially on weekends, so buying them well in advance is advised.

Fortnum & Mason

Fortnum & Mason is my favourite department store in London! Their award-winning window displays bring smiles to everyone passing them. They transform the facade into a giant advent calendar, with each exterior window numbered from one to twenty-five, decorated with lush garlands and cheerful twinkle lights. As the month passes, the numbers are illuminated individually, like doors opening on a massive advent calendar.

Oxford Street

If you are looking for a place to shop, there is no better street than Oxford Street. In fact, it is Europe’s busiest shopping street, with around half a million daily visitors and over 300 shops! Look up and down the street to admire the over one million twinkling stars raining down onto the street. They are genuinely some of the most impressive sights in the city. And you can almost always spot a myriad of red double-decker buses, almost grazing the tops of the lights. This scene always makes for the most perfect photo op!

Pavilion Road

Pavilion Road is a charming street in Chelsea near the Royal Borough of Kensington. Despite being close to the main road, this street truly feels like escaping back in time. At Christmas time, when the twinkly lights are strung up along the roofs and carollers can be heard singing in the distance, it feels like you’re inside a Charles Dickens novel. The road features a series of artisan food shops perfect for grabbing special items for your Christmas table. The jovial neighbourhood atmosphere along this street is palpable, and one of the best-hidden gems in the city!

Elizabeth Street

Elizabeth Street is a charming and picturesque street in the upscale neighbourhood of Belgravia. It is known for its quaint, village-like atmosphere, boutique shops, and, during the Christmas season, its beautifully adorned decorations that transform the borough into a festive wonderland.

Above the road, Elizabeth Street is adorned with festive lights in the shape of gorgeous chandeliers that illuminate the passersby with a warm and welcoming glow. These lights create a magical atmosphere and make evening strolls especially enchanting.

Borough Market

Borough Market is one of London’s most famous and historic food markets. Located in the Southwark borough of London, near London Bridge, it is a bustling and vibrant marketplace that has been a hub for food and drink enthusiasts for centuries. Borough Market embraces the festive spirit during Christmas, with charming decorations and seasonal delights flooding the entire market.

Strings of twinkling fairy lights create a warm and inviting atmosphere, especially in the evenings and the outdoor portion of the market is wrapped in giant red ribbons, making the entire place feel like a giant Christmas present wrapped just for you!

Harrods

Founded in 1834 by Charles Henry Harrod, Harrods Department store, located in Knightsbridge, is perhaps the most famous shopping mall in all of London! If not the most recognizable name for luxury, it is known worldwide. Harrods goes all out with its Christmas decorations. Every year, they go about transforming the exterior, as well as the interior, of the store into a fantastical winter wonderland. Last year, Christan Dior took over the light displays on the facade with giant starbursts that sparkled like the stars in the moonlight.

Inside, Harrods Christmas displays are known for their extravagance and attention to detail. While they might be far above your Christmas budget, wandering around the displays is a great way to get inspiration for your home and enjoy the stunning Christmas atmosphere.

Tips for Exploring London’s Christmas Lights

Where Can You Find London’s Best Christmas Lights?

The lighting displays are located all over the city. You’ll need to bounce around on the tube to see them all. But my advice is to pick one neighbourhood to explore. I’ve divided this post into different boroughs, so you know which area every display is located. That way, you can find out which areas interest you most.

When do the Lights Turn On?

In November, the lights start to be turned on, and they are kept up until early January. Thankfully, the sun goes down earlier in the winter, so the lights turn on around 5 p.m. This means you have lots of time to explore the illuminated city after the sun sets!

When is the Best Time to See the Lights?

If you want to avoid the huge Christmas crowds, you’re better off planning your trip in November. And be aware that weekends will be much busier than weekdays. I loved going out after dinner on a weeknight to explore the stunning laneways as a perfect nightcap to end a lovely evening.

But personally, I LOVED being right in the centre of London during the week leading up to Christmas. There was such a palpable atmosphere, with people flooding the streets and busy shoppers rushing around to finish getting everything on their Christmas lists. There really isn’t a bad time to come, just expect the crowds.

What to Wear

When venturing out to see the Christmas lights in London, it’s important to dress for the weather. While Winter in London isn’t as cold as other cities around the world, it can still get quite chilly, so dressing appropriately is essential to enjoy your festive outing.

• Layered Clothing: Layering is key to staying warm. Start with a thermal or moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Add a warm sweater on top.
• Winter Coat: Invest in a good-quality, insulated winter coat to provide warmth and protection from the cold. A waterproof coat is best to protect against the rain. Look for one with a hood to keep your head warm and dry.
• Hat: A hat or beanie is essential to prevent heat loss from your head.
• Scarf: A thick, woollen scarf can keep your neck warm and be pulled up to cover your face if necessary.
• Gloves: Opt for insulated, waterproof gloves or mittens to keep your hands warm.
• Thermal Leggings: We had days below zero last year, which is pretty rare for London, but on days like this, you should wear thermal leggings under your pants to add an extra layer of warmth.
• Warm Socks: Invest in warm, moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet cozy. You can even wear two pairs if it’s exceptionally cold.
• Waterproof Boots: Choose waterproof boots with insulation to keep your feet dry and warm. Ensure they have good traction to prevent slipping on icy or wet surfaces.
• Hand and Foot Warmers: For extremely cold nights, consider using disposable hand and foot warmers that can be placed in your gloves and boots for extra warmth.

Covent Garden

Although most people think of Covent Garden as the ever-so-charming marketplace, Covent Garden is actually the name of an entire neighbourhood in West London. The area is bounded to the east and west by the Kingsway and Charing Cross Road. And north-south by Holborn Street and the Strand.

Covent Garden Market Piazza

Start your walk at the old Covent Garden Market. This historic marketplace is steeped in centuries of tradition, but at Christmas time, it is one of the most festive centres in London. The market’s elegant piazza, adorned with neoclassical architecture and lively street performances, is brimming with twinkle lights, Christmas trees, oversized wreaths and the smell of mulled wine emanating throughout the air.

Also, outside the Piazza, you’ll always find some special exhibitions. In years past, there was a special Frozen Christmas Village, and last year, Dolce and Gabanna set up a multicoloured light display that made for awe-inspiring photos!

Apple Market

You’ll find the mammoth Covent Garden Christmas tree outside the Apple Market! This Christmas tree is the largest hand-picked tree in all of London. In addition to this, the tree was grown at the same tree farm where the Royal family gets their Christmas trees. So it’s perhaps the poshest tree in London as well! It takes organizers over 300 hours to decorate the tree. And they even used a cherry picker to get those baubles to the top.

The area outside near the Christmas Tree is where visitors can get the chance to see “snow” falling in London. The snow falls every hour on the hour, so arrive accordingly. Sure, it might be fake snow made of soap, but how everyone erupts with delights and how magical it makes the space feel is all that matters!

King Street

King Street, a cobbled gem within the heart of Covent Garden, is a captivating blend of old-world elegance and modern sophistication. The street’s enchanting architecture, characterized by Georgian and Victorian facades adorned with charming bay windows and ornate ironwork, is a testament to London’s architectural heritage. And at Christmas, all the boutiques and artisanal shops go all out with their Christmas light displays.

St. Paul’s Church

St. Paul’s Church is a secret spot inside Covent Garden, affectionately known as The Actors’ Church. It features a modest Christmas light display but is set in the most peaceful setting. Make sure to stop in and look at each of the benches lining the garden pathways dedicated to famous actors from London. St. Paul’s Church Covent Garden is a favourite among Londoners. Famed singer Gwen Stefani was even married to her first husband, Gavin Rossdale, in this church.

St. Martin’s Courtyard is hidden away, just off of Long Acre Street in Covent Garden. Walking into the courtyard, you pass under the most incredible oversized holly wreaths covered by bright white twinkle lights. The holly leaves seem to spill onto the street as boughs of garlands wrap around the shop windows.

St. Martin’s Lane

Walking back, take a stroll along Saint Martin’s Lane. Saint Martin’s Lane is where many of the most important theatres are located, making it a hub for entertainment and culture. This area is famous for its vibrant nightlife, upscale hotels, and trendy restaurants. The lane is decorated with different Christmas street lights hung above walkways. But all the stylish restaurants in the area go all out with their Christmas displays, adding to the festive environment.

The Strand

Walking south towards the river, you arrive along the famous Strand. This is a historic and prestigious thoroughfare that runs along the northern bank of the River Thames. All along the street, you’ll find famous landmarks and renowned institutions. At Christmas, they hand these beautiful light displays shaped like blue and gold ornaments hanging above the road. One of the best parts of this area is looking at the iconic red double-decker bus driving under the sparkling Christmas lights.

Somerset House

On the south side of the Strand, just beyond Waterloo Bridge, you will find the Neoclassical landmark Somerset House. The Duke of Somerset once owned the property, but today, the building is often used to host events centred around arts and education.

The square is transformed into a giant fairytale-like ice skating rink at Christmas. A massive 40-foot twinkling Christmas tree stands watch over the skaters. At night, the rink is illuminated in multicoloured lights, which create a magical atmosphere and highlight the architectural beauty of the building itself.

Mayfair

The upscale and elegant neighbourhood of Mayfair is known for its luxury boutiques, designer shops, art galleries, and high-end hotels. With so much extravagance throughout the year, you can expect nothing but the best from their Christmas lights and decorations.

Grosvenor Square

Grosvenor Square is one of London’s most prestigious garden squares. It transforms into a festive wonderland with a beautiful Christmas light installation during the Christmas season. The Square is adorned with 20,000 illuminated roses each year, forming a glowing carpet of flowers. Each flower can be purchased as a dedication to a lost loved one. All the money raised from these donations is then given to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Walking through the garden is a beautiful and sombre experience, especially at Christmas; it’s essential to think of those who might be missing someone special.

Annabel’s

Annabel’s is a private members club located inside a gorgeous Georgian mansion across from the historic Berkeley Square. The highly exclusive club was established in 1963 for wealthy members to privately gamble after partying. Everyone from the Queen herself to Olivia Newton-John and Lady Gaga has been deemed important enough to be allowed inside these hallowed gates.

And while you might never have the chance to enter the fairytale-like interior, all can enjoy their out-of-this-world Christmas decorations! Every year, they try to outdo themselves with bigger and better designs. Last year, the entire exterior was transformed into a magical carousel!

Piccadilly Street

From Annabel’s, walk south down to Piccadilly Street. Piccadilly is one of the most iconic streets in London, with a rich history dating back to the 17th century when it was a fashionable hub for London’s elite. At Christmas time, landmarks such as the Ritz Hotel enchant visitors with fantastical lighting displays.

Piccadilly Arcade

Walking east along Piccadilly, be sure to check out Piccadilly Arcade. Piccadilly Arcade is a beautiful neo-classical covered shopping arcade known for its exclusive boutique shops that offer a curated selection of high-end luxury goods. The arcade’s interior is decorated in blue and silver mirrored snowflakes, illuminating the architectural details throughout the arcade.

Burlington Arcade

Hop across the street and into another covered arcade, the Burlington Arcade. This covered shopping street was built in 1819 and featured incredible Regency-era architecture.

As this strip is home to many fine jewelry makers and bespoke tailors, they always decorate their interiors to entertain and amaze their high-end clients. Hanging from the glass roof is a series of giant disco balls and silver and gold baubles sparkling along the length of the arcade.

Liberty of London

Quickly stop inside Liberty London, a luxury department store along historic Great Marlborough Street. The shop opened in 1875 and was immediately one of the most popular spots for high-end Christmas decorations. One of the iconic aspects of the store is the Tudor revival design of the building. Despite being a Tudo style, this was actually designed in 1920.

Every year, Liberty London unveils its festive Christmas window displays. The charming designs attract visitors from all over the city to gaze in awe at the delightful displays. Inside, the smell of balsam and eucalyptus fills the air with scents inspired by fragrant winter forests. Its enormous five-storey atrium is home to a fantastical paper Christmas tree with Christmas lights dangling from the ceiling. It’s a wonderful to behold.

Carnaby

Make your way out the back door of Liberty, where you find yourself immediately in the centre of the fantastical Carnaby Street Christmas Lights. Whereas Regent Street focuses on historical references, Carnaby Street aims to break away from tradition and draws you into a festive wonderland with unique and eye-catching decorations.Carnaby Street gets its name from ‘Karnaby House,’ a large and impressive mansion built here in 1683. The estate was so iconic that people began to refer to the area simply by that name.

The Old City of London, often simply referred to as the “City of London,” is the historic and financial heart of the British capital. It’s a neighbourhood that is steeped in history and tradition. It is home to some of London’s most iconic historical landmarks, including the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Bank of England.

Paul’s Cathedral

St Paul’s Cathedral is one of London’s most recognizable and impressive buildings. Its iconic dome has dominated the skyline for over 300 years and can be seen throughout the city. Every year, inside and outside the church, a series of enormous Christmas trees are installed. Each one towering over 24 feet tall. This tradition dates back to George V. The trees are all sourced from Sandringham, the royal estate of His Majesty the King. While the tree is simple and plainly decorated, something about that warm glow in front of one of the most incredible architectural buildings brings a warm smile to my face.

Watling Street

On the way out of the Cathedral, you should make a point to walk down Watling Street to view the beautiful Christmas lights hanging along the street. Watling Street is one of the most historic routes in England. It was used in Classical Antiquity and throughout the Middle Ages as one of the main Roman roads in Britannia. Today, it’s home to several lively bars and restaurants, perfect for an evening nightcap.

Leadenhall Market

The holy grail of Victorian London can be found right here inside the Leadenhall Market. Leadenhall Market is a vast covered market located in the centre of the old city of London. The origins of the market date back to the 14th century, making it one of the oldest markets in London. The market is also famous for being one of the locations where the Harry Potter movies were filmed.

Leadenhall Market’s Christmas lights are so iconic that the Lord Mayor of London himself comes to switch them on! The Victorian theme is present in all the decorations, which seem to harken back to that era. Festive foliage lines the arcade. All decorations reflect Victorian styles with bows, paper ornaments, British flags and fabric-covered baubles. Underneath the theatrical arch, leading guests into the market is the giant Christmas tree, where you will frequently hear carol singers delighting the guests inside.

St. James

Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square is perhaps the most famous public square in London. It is in the centre of Westminster, just steps from many of the most iconic buildings in London. The square was built in the 19th century to honour the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. During this battle, the British navy captured a difficult victory against the Napoleonic off the coast of Cape Trafalgar. Nelson’s Column stands in the centre of the square. It towers over the rest of the courtyard at 169 feet tall and is guarded by four lion statues.

While the column is usually the tallest structure in the square, the colossal Christmas tree installed in the yard gives the column a run for its money. Since 1947, Norway has gifted the city of London with regal Norwegian spruce. The first tree was a gift to thank the British for their support during World War II. They decorate the tree in a simplistic Norwegian style, with only a few lights strung vertically yearly. It is erected 12 days before Christmas and remains in the square until 12 days after Christmas. Making the square even more festive is the fabulous Trafalgar Christmas Market. Over 20 stalls sell everything from Christmas ornaments, jewellery, hand-crafted goods and lots of sweets!

Jermyn St

Walk along Haymarket Street towards Jermyn Street. Jermyn Street is renowned for its longstanding tradition of fine tailoring and men’s fashion. It has been a destination for the discerning gentleman searching for impeccably tailored clothing, accessories, and grooming products for centuries. Along Jermyn Street, you’ll see different variations of the spirits that hang above Regent Street. But it is far less busy on Jermyn Street, so if you’re looking for a less chaotic wander, this is the street to walk along.

Fortnum & Mason

As you walk along Jermyn Street, you’ll go to the back entrance to Fortnum & Mason. Be sure to walk through the front to appreciate the amazing Christmas Lights display. Fortnum & Mason is my favourite department store in London! Why? Well, because I think it has the most innovative and magnificent packaging in the entire world. As a graphic designer, I always notice packaging right away. And I find everything inside their shop to be an absolute delight. 

Fortnum & Mason goes all out on their Christmas displays during the holidays. Their award-winning window displays bring smiles to everyone passing them. They transform the facade into a giant advent calendar, with each exterior window numbered from one to twenty-five, decorated with lush garlands and cheerful twinkle lights. As the month passes, the numbers are illuminated individually, like doors opening on a massive advent calendar.

St. James Street

Make your way down St. James’s Street, stopping in front of Lock & Co. Hatters and Berry Bros. & Rudd, who often have some of the best lighting displays on the exterior of these historic stores.

Pickering Place

Hidden away off of St. James Street is Pickering Place. Pickering Place is a small, cobbled courtyard surrounded by elegant Georgian townhouses. This picturesque courtyard is reminiscent of a bygone era, and at Christmas, they decorate it with a beautiful traditional outdoor Christmas tree and white Christmas lights.

Marylebone

Just south of Regent’s Park, in the city’s north end, you’ll find the charming borough of Marylebone. Marylebone Village is best known for its stunning light garlands swagged across the old brick streets. Everyone in this small neighbourhood village seems to participate in the Christmas celebrations. Decorating every street corner and shop window.

South Molton Street

To start your explorations of Marylebone’s Christmas Lights, make your way to South Molton Street. The street was built in the mid-18th century, and much of the area still retains the original Georgian homes built in the 1900s. At Christmas time, it hosts a series of astonishing illuminated arches. Their bright blue glow beckons you in from far beyond. The blue is so bright, in fact, that it casts a blue glow over the entire street.

Oxford Street

If you are looking for a place to shop, there is no better street than Oxford Street. In fact, it is Europe’s busiest shopping street, with around half a million daily visitors and over 300 shops! Look up and down the street to admire the over one million twinkling stars raining down onto the street. They are genuinely some of the most impressive sights in the city. And you can almost always spot a myriad of red double-decker buses, almost grazing the tops of the lights. This scene always makes for the most perfect photo op!

St Christopher’s Place

St Christopher’s Place is a tiny pedestrian alley just off Oxford Street. It somehow maintains the feeling of a tranquil oasis just astride one of the busiest parts of town. That small-town feel is amplified with window boxes filled with flowers in the springtime, wooden benches and friendly locals chatting in the main square. When Christmas comes to St. Christoper’s, lovely extra-large illuminated ornaments hang from above. Casting a rainbow glow down on the narrow stone walkways below.

Marylebone High Street

Continue north along St. Christophers Place, passing Widmore Street until you reach Marylebone High Street. Marylebone High Street is famous for its boutique shopping scene. It is lined with an array of upscale and independent shops catering to diverse tastes and preferences. Everyone seems to get into the Christmas spirit at Christmas with elaborate displays on every corner!

Chelsea, Knightsbridge and Belgravia

Chelsea, Knightsbridge and Belgravia are some of the most affluent areas of London, located south of Hyde Park. These streets are where you can find a refined and upscale ambiance, Victorian townhouses, grand mansion blocks, and impressive garden squares.

Harrods

Founded in 1834 by Charles Henry Harrod, Harrods Department store, located in Knightsbridge, is perhaps the most famous shopping mall in all of London! If not the most recognizable name for luxury, it is known worldwide. Harrods goes all out with its Christmas decorations. Every year, they go about transforming the exterior, as well as the interior, of the store into a fantastical winter wonderland. Last year, Christan Dior took over the light displays on the facade with giant starbursts that sparkled like the stars in the moonlight.

Inside, Harrods Christmas displays are known for their extravagance and attention to detail. While they might be far above your Christmas budget, wandering around the displays is a great way to get inspiration for your home and enjoy the stunning Christmas atmosphere.

Daphne’s

One of my favourite Christmas Lights displays is actually located inside one of my favourite restaurants. Daphne’s is located in the heart of Chelsea and is a local favourite for Italian cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. The decor changes slightly every year, but you can always expect Christmas lights and baubles hanging from the ceiling, like dining in a forest of Christmas decorations!

Pavilion Road

Pavilion Road is a charming street in Chelsea near the Royal Borough of Kensington. Despite being close to the main road, this street truly feels like escaping back in time. At Christmas time, when the twinkly lights are strung up along the roofs and carollers can be heard singing in the distance, it feels like you’re inside a Charles Dickens novel. The road features a series of artisan food shops perfect for grabbing special items for your Christmas table. The jovial neighbourhood atmosphere along this street is palpable, and one of the best-hidden gems in the city!

Sloane Square

Sloan Square is another favourite destination in Chelsea for Christmas lights. This square is much more peaceful than the adjacent Duke of York. Immense snowflake-shaped lights hang from the trees, making you feel tiny standing underneath. The seductive Venus fountain in the centre of the square makes for the perfect place to nab a photo of the twinkle lights falling all around you.

Duke of York Square

Just down the King’s Road is one of the best places to see the Christmas lights in Chelsea; the Duke of York Square and the King’s Road. The Duke of York Square features these incredible chandelier Christmas lights hanging from the trees. I love how this gives the appearance of being inside a high-class ballroom in the middle of London.

To the east of the square, King’s Road features this amazing crowned light above the roadway. The crown is intricately designed and is based on the crown worn by King Charles II. Be sure to carve out some time to stroll around the Chelsea Christmas shopping mall. All the stores in the area have created some incredible Christmas displays inside and outside their shops!

Elizabeth Street

Elizabeth Street is a charming and picturesque street in the upscale neighbourhood of Belgravia. It is known for its quaint, village-like atmosphere, boutique shops, and, during the Christmas season, its beautifully adorned decorations that transform the borough into a festive wonderland.

Above the road, Elizabeth Street is adorned with festive lights in the shape of gorgeous chandeliers that illuminate the passersby with a warm and welcoming glow. These lights create a magical atmosphere and make evening strolls especially enchanting.

Many shops and boutiques on Elizabeth Street participate in the holiday festivities by decorating their storefronts with Christmas wreaths, garlands, and twinkling lights.

Southbank & Southwark

The boroughs of Southbank and Southwark can be found on the south side of the River Thames. Southbank and Southwark offer stunning riverside promenades with picturesque views of London’s skyline.

Belvedere Road

Belvedere Road runs parallel to the eastern bank of the River Thames and has one of the most impressive views of the London Eyes framed on either side by Christmas light-wrapped trees. While the London Eye, for me, is an overrated tourist trap to pay to go inside, looking at in from below, all lit up in Christmas colours, is always an impressive sight!

Southbank Centre Winter Market

One of the most popular spots in Southbank is the pedestrianized embankment along the Thames called the Queen’s Walk. This exquisite promenade was created for the practical purpose of public drainage and preventing flooding. But it has been transformed into this gorgeous walking area with trees set alight during Christmas. Glittering garlands hang about, and the modern neon lights can be seen reflecting off the waters of the Thames.

But perhaps one of the biggest draws to the area is the Southbank Centre’s, Winter Market. The smell of mulled wine permeates the air as you walk amongst the wooden chalet selling Christmas food and decor. All set under the twinkling lights above.

Borough Market

Borough Market is one of London’s most famous and historic food markets. Located in the Southwark borough of London, near London Bridge, it is a bustling and vibrant marketplace that has been a hub for food and drink enthusiasts for centuries. Borough Market embraces the festive spirit during Christmas with charming decorations and seasonal delights flooding the entire market.

Strings of twinkling fairy lights create a warm and inviting atmosphere, especially in the evenings and the outdoor portion of the market is wrapped in giant red ribbons, making the entire place feel like a giant Christmas present wrapped just for you!

Hay’s Galleria

Hay’s Galleria is a massive warehouse complex on the river that was once used for storing and distributing tea along the Thames River. Today, the building has been transformed into a shopping and dining destination. At Christmas time, Hay’s Galleria is home to a lovely little market, but best of all, there is an enormous Christmas tree and a fantastical alpine cocktail bar.

Christmas by the River Market

Against the backdrop of some of London’s most iconic locations lies London Bridge City’s Christmas by the River. This holiday market is nestled along the water’s edge under the glowing lights of Tower Bridge. Winter cabins covered in fairy lights line the riverside. Each one sells hand-crafted items and delicious festive foods. In addition, the market also features these amazing, larger-than-life animals lit with Christmas lights that look out over the city of London.
