Start Your Day with a Warm Cup of Coffee inside The Attendant

On a rainy day, there’s nothing quite like a hot cup of coffee or tea to start your day. And in London, there is no shortage of cozy cafes where you can curl up with a warming breakfast. In the centre of Fitzrovia is an old iron gate. Behind it, you’ll spot a stairwell leading you down into one of the best-hidden gems in London. Down below the surface, you are led into a stunning slice of history inside the Attendant Cafe. This quaint coffee shop is housed inside a former Victorian public restroom. Yes, you heard that right! This cafe serves up great coffee and delicious brunch options, all inside a beautifully restored Victorian interior. Enjoying your morning brew here, surrounded by the fantastical historical furnishings, is such a special way to start your day. Another hidden away location that doesn’t care about the rain.

Explore The Wallace Collection

After loading up on a filling breakfast, if the rain is still pounding the ground outside, it’s time to escape to one of the city’s most amazing museums. London is known for its world-class museums. And the Wallace Collection is a true gem among London’s many cultural institutions. It is often considered the best museum to visit for art lovers. Housed within a stunning 18th-century townhouse, the Wallace Collection boasts a breathtaking array of art. It includes everything from paintings, sculptures, porcelain, and furniture but is displayed like a living, personal collection rather than a stuffy, curated gallery. Visitors can explore works from renowned artists such as Titian, Rembrandt, and Fragonard. 

The museum itself is a work of art, featuring lavish period-styled rooms and elegant architecture. Stepping into the Wallace Collection feels like stepping back in time. A visit allows guests to immerse themselves in a historical and artistic ambiance.

Unlike some larger, more crowded museums in London, the Wallace Collection offers a more intimate and tranquil setting. Visitors can take their time to admire the art, reflect, and connect with each piece on a deeper level. I love escaping from the rain here, where the lavish, texture wallpaper envelopes me in a warm blanket of awe!

Warm Up with Market Comfort Food inside Mercato Mayfair

After a morning of exploring the museum, you’ll likely be ready for a warm and comforting meal. London has no shortage of cozy restaurants where you can indulge in delicious comfort food. But one of my favourite places to go on a rainy day are London’s Food Halls. London stands out with its abundant indoor Food Halls and Markets, catering to every appetite. The Mercato Mayfair is an enchanting food hall housed in a restored historic building that was once St. Mark’s Church. This exquisitely renovated space retains much of its original architectural beauty, including stained glass windows and intricate stone details, creating a breathtaking backdrop for its main purpose as a vibrant food market.

The old nave has been cleared out of the old church pews. Instead, this area is transformed into a modern cafeteria-style shared-seating dinner room with rainbow-coloured tables. Adding a modern pop of colour to the old Greek revival architecture. The vibrant stalls beckon you in with their array of food from all over the world! From Italian pasta and pizza to Japanese sushi, Mexican street food, and Middle Eastern delicacies, there’s something to satisfy every palate. It’s a true paradise for food enthusiasts eager to explore a world of flavours in one place. In the basement, you’ll find a small brewery where they make the beer right on-site! Booths have been slotted into the old crypt where you and your friends can escape the rain! And enjoy a pint of beer or glass of gin.

Get Lost inside Daunt Books Marylebone

After lunch, if the rain is still hitting the pavement, there’s no better place to escape than a cozy bookstore. And London is home to some of the world’s most iconic bookstores! A visit to Daunt Books in Marylebone is a delightful journey for artsy book lovers. Located in the heart of Marylebone, this iconic bookstore exudes the dark academic aesthetic. Edwardian oak galleries, antique stained glass windows, emerald green walls and inviting décor all exude that old literary style.

The old pub was frequented by famous literary figures like George Orwell, Dylan Thomas, and George Bernard Shaw. The pub was a gathering place for the Fitzrovia Group, a circle of bohemian artists, writers, and intellectuals who lived and worked in the Fitzrovia area during the 1920s and 1930s. Getting Started: Grab an Oyster Card or Contactless Payment

Inside each station are ticket machines and offices to purchase single tickets. But no one should buy these single paper tickets as they are almost triple the price of using an Oyster Card or Contactless payment. A zone 1 fare using an Oyster card or Contactless payment is only £2.50, but purchasing a single ticket in cash would cost you a whopping £6.30!

Oyster Card

An Oyster Card is a smart card used for travel on public transport in London. Oyster cards work by pre-loading money onto the card, which is deducted automatically when you use it. The card can be used on the London Underground, all London buses, trams, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), the London Overground, River Buses, and some National Rail services. Using an Oyster card gives you a discounted fare on every ride you take vs cash tickets.

To use your Oyster card, you must tap on and off when you pass through the turnstiles entering and exiting tube stations. When using the oyster card on the bus, you only need to tap on. There is no need to tap off. The Visitor Oyster card costs £5. After getting your card, you need to load it with additional money to travel. You will not get this £5 back, nor will it be added to the balance of your card. You need to find a ticket machine inside any Tube station to load your card with the money. Here you can select how much you want to add to your card. I would start with £20 and reload as needed. You can’t get the money left over on the card back at the end of your trip, so load wisely.

Contactless Payment

In 2022, the Tube introduced the contactless payment option for transport around London. If you have a debit or credit card with a chip that can be read wirelessly and is enabled for contactless use, you can use this method to pay for your journey directly at the turnstile. Just as you would with an Oyster card, this also works with your phone using Apple Pay. Simply touch the contactless payment method to the yellow card reader on the turnstile, and you’ll be let right on through. And do the same thing when you exit the station. You will be charged at the same discounted rate as Oyster card users. This will save you buying the £5 Visitor Oyster card and prevent you from losing any unused money you don’t spend. Plus, you’ve never needed to worry about queueing in lines to reload your card.

But remember, whether you use your Oyster card or contactless payment, you must use the same one when tapping in and out. Otherwise, the fare reader won’t know where you came from. Upon leaving, you’ll either be denied the ability to exit or charged the highest fare option. Even if you only took a short journey. So be sure to remember how you tapped on.

Oyster Cards vs. Contactless Payment

The biggest downside of using Contactless Payment is foreign transaction fees. All payments on the Tube will be made in GBP. Before you travel, check with your card issuer to ensure you are not charged expensive transaction fees for foreign currency when using contactless payments. These fees could become more costly than your contactless payment savings. 

The other issue with Contactless Payment is that it doesn’t support concessions, such as senior, student, and children fares. Using contactless payment, you’ll automatically be charged the standard price for transport on the Tube. If you fall into any of those age categories, buying yourself the proper concession Oyster card for your age is much more important as you’ll receive the correct fare pricing.

Daily Transport Cap

No matter how much you travel throughout the day, there is a maximum fare cap of £8.10 (for zones 1-2) if you pay with your Oyster Card or Contactless payment. Any additional trips will be free if you’ve already passed your fare cap! As tourists, running around from place to place can be super handy! You can check out the daily transport limit on the TFL website by searching the different zones you’ll be travelling in. Thanks to these daily caps, tourists do not need to buy those daily transport cards, as you’ll find the prices far more competitive using the Oyster or contactless payment system.

Accessibility

Accessibility on the London Underground has come a long way in recent years, with many stations now equipped with step-free access. And other facilities to make travel easier for passengers with disabilities. For users in wheelchairs, the Tube offers a range of accessibility features to help them easily navigate the system. Some stations also have lifts or escalators to provide access to the platforms. Additionally, all newer trains are equipped with accessible features such as wider doors, wheelchair spaces, and audio and visual announcements to assist passengers with disabilities. 

The Transport for London website provides detailed accessibility information for each station, including information on step-free access, lift availability, and other facilities such as accessible toilets and hearing loops. You can also download accessibility guides and maps to help you plan and make journeys.

More than 9,000 buses are wheelchair accessible. And Wheelchair users are not expected to pay to ride the city buses. To learn more about London’s Public Transport accessibility, check out this website.

The London Underground

No matter where you’re heading in London, you’ll be able to get there in no time and with ease by using London’s phenomenal Underground metro system. The London Underground is one of the world’s oldest and largest underground railway networks, with 11 lines and 270 stations. 

Each line has a unique colour and name, making it easier for travellers to navigate the city. Passengers can switch between lines at designated interchange stations, marked on the map by white circles atop the intersecting lines.

The London Underground, or ‘Tube’ for short, is a system divided into nine zones. Starting with Zone 1, which is centred around the main area of London. With each subsequent zone spreading outwards from this central point. Ending in Zone 9, which covers the outermost areas of Greater London. The fare for a Tube journey depends on the zones you travel through. Most major tourist sights are located in Zone 1 and 2, where the fares are the lowest. The fare will be calculated by the station in which you enter and the station you exit.

London Buses

The iconic London bus is a great way to see the city. With over 8,600 buses covering 700 routes, you can get pretty much anywhere in London by bus. Buses run from early morning until late at night, with some night buses running 24 hours. Taking the bus is a great way to see London’s sights and soak up the atmosphere if you’re not in a hurry. Go to the upper level, and you’ll get a scenic view as you ride.

How to Flag Down a London Bus

Unlike bus services elsewhere I’ve travelled, just because you’re standing at a bus stop doesn’t immediately mean the incoming bus will stop for you. Since there are so many different routes that offer service at that same stop, you need to flag them down to indicate you would like to get on the incoming bus. When you see the bus approaching, raise your arm to signal the driver to stop. Once the bus has stopped, you can board it. If you have a contactless or Oyster card, tap it on the reader by the driver and find your seat! To get off the bus at your intended stop, press the bell button to alert the driver when you hear your stop announced on the system.

Take a Ride on the #11 Bus

If you ride any double-decker bus in London, ensure it’s the #11! This bus is often dubbed the “Sightseeing Route,” as it passes many of the city’s major landmarks and tourist attractions. The route passes through popular areas such as Chelsea, Kensington, and Westminster before ending on Liverpool Street. Some of the major landmarks and attractions that the #11 bus passes by include: Hyde Park, Marble Arch, Oxford Street, Trafalgar Square, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Victoria and Albert Museum and Harrods.

Many first-time tourists in London book tickets onto those Hop-On Hop-Off buses. These are considered special as they have open-top decks that provide some photo opportunities of iconic landmarks. And easily takes you from sight to sight around the city. But since London is prone to rain, you often pay £40 to sit inside on the lower level and miss out on all those sights. But you can always sit upstairs on the public bus as they are covered. And on the #11 route, you’ll see all those iconic landmarks. The route runs every 6-7 minutes during the day, making it a convenient and affordable way for visitors to see many of London’s top sights without the huge price tag. Bus fares are set at £1.75 per journey.

The DLR

The Docklands Light Railway, or DLR, is an automated light metro system that serves East and South London. The DLR is a great way to get to the financial district, Canary Wharf, and London City Airport. It’s also a great way to see some of London’s lesser-known sights, like Greenwich and the Royal Docks. You can use the same contactless payment or Oyster card on the DLR.

The Overground

The London Overground is a suburban rail network that covers much of Greater London. It’s a great way to get to places like Camden, Hackney. If you’re travelling with kids, the Overground has fantastic views of London, so sit by a window.

The River Bus

While in many other European river cities, taking a ride along the river is reserved for private boats and river cruises, in London, many boats are considered public transit. The River Bus service is a unique way to see London’s landmarks from the water, including the Tower Bridge and the London Eye. You can use your Oyster Card or contactless payment to ride the River Buses. The River Bus map might give you some ideas of the amazing places you can travel along the Thames, like Hampton Court, Greenwich, and even Woolwich.

Navigating Public Transit System

There are a few different apps I use to navigate around the city. The first is the official TFL app. This app is often the most up-to-date regarding delays on the system. It provides several options for your journey, including step-free access for those users requiring accessible entrances. I especially love this app because it shows the fares alongside each option. That way, you won’t automatically choose the fastest option if the cheaper option is only a few minutes longer.

The one downside I found when using the TFL app was that while it does list the time on a bicycle to the destination, it does not list the walking times. In a city like London, walking is one of the best ways to explore as it allows you to best connect with the neighbourhood and make little detours whenever your eye catches something interesting. For this reason, I would also frequently use Google Maps, which allowed me to get the walking distances compared to public transport. Sometimes, I know I’m miles and miles from home and wouldn’t bother with Google Maps, but if I’m close enough, I would usually opt to just walk home. And see the sights along the way.

Tips on Using the London Public Transit

Plan your journey in Advance

Using the Transport for London website or app to plan your journey before you leave is always a good idea. This way, you know which line to take, where to change trains, and how long your journey will take.
The Tube generally runs from 5:00 am until midnight, with some lines running 24 hours on weekends. Operating hours are slightly reduced on Sunday. If you plan on staying out late on a weekday, be aware that the Tube might not be running after midnight, so make arrangements for alternative modes of transportation.

Avoid Rush Hour

Be aware that, like all big cities, various popular Tube lines can get extremely crowded during peak hours. This might mean you might have to wait for a few trains to arrive before finding a spot, even to stand inside. You’ll easily miss these crowded trains if you avoid travelling on the Tube during rush hour. So plan around this if possible.

Mind the gap

The famous “mind the gap” announcement is more than just a catchphrase. The first time I ever really saw this fabled “gap,” I was shocked. In most other metros around the world, the gap between the platform and the train is, at most, a few inches, but I’ve arrived at a station in London where it almost required me to jump across. So they really aren’t kidding around! So watch your step when boarding or exiting a train, as there may be a significant gap between the platform and the train.

Stand on the right

In London, when using escalators, always stand on the right side. And leave the left side free for people who want to walk up or down the escalator.

Keep An Eye on Your Belongings

In London, like in many big cities, the Underground is a popular place for pickpockets. They are good at their “job,” so many people don’t know their wallet is missing before it’s too late. Keep your bags close, and wear any backpacks on the front of your body. Be sure when using your phone to keep a good handle on it, as some people have had their phones swiped right out of their hands.

Be courteous and quiet

Londoners take public transportation very seriously, and being courteous and considerate to other passengers is important. Offer your seat to someone who needs it. Certain seats on the Tube and bus are designated for people with disabilities. Remember, not all disabilities are visible, so if someone asks for the seat, always assume they need it and give it up without question. Remember not to talk too loudly on the Tube. Many tourists are spotted a mile away solely by their loud voices. Best to keep the volume down to not bring attention to yourself.

How do I get from the Airport to my Hotel in London?

London Heathrow is one of the busiest airports in the world, serving millions of travellers each year. And getting from the airport to the city center can seem overwhelming. But there are plenty of options for incoming travellers without resorting to expensive taxis or Uber rides. 

Is the Heathrow Express Worth it?

One of the things you’ll hear repeatedly is the advice to book the Heathrow Express from the airport into the city. And honestly, the Heathrow Express is a big rip-off unless you can book an advanced ticket more than 90 days in advance. Yes, you heard me right; now let me explain.

The Heathrow Express is a non-stop train service between Heathrow Airport and Paddington Station in central London. The journey takes just 15 minutes, and trains run every 15 minutes during peak hours. If you buy a Fixed Date Saver Ticket 90 days in advance, the one-way fare costs only £5.50! Which is cheaper than the Tube. If you book two months in advance, your ticket will cost £16.50. And anything less than that will cost a whopping £25 for one person, one way. In fact, the Heathrow Express is considered the most expensive per-minute train journey in the world. If you pay the regular price.

Add onto this the considerations of travelling with more than one person. If you’re travelling with four people, you’ll find that even a taxi or Uber into the city might be cheaper when you add it all up. Depending on traffic, of course. So if you can book your tickets in advance, sure go for the Heathrow Express option. But if you can’t commit to advanced bookings, consider some alternatives.

Consider Taking the London Underground

Even if you do take the Heathrow Express, most likely, your journey won’t end at Paddington Station, where the Heathrow Express train ends. This is only one part of your transit to your final destination. And you’ll probably need to hop onto the London Underground one way or another. The London Underground, also known as the Tube, is the fastest and most efficient way to get from Heathrow to anywhere in London. Not just Paddington Station.

Take the New Elizabeth Line

As of 2023, the Underground finished construction on the new Elizabeth Line that (just like the Heathrow Express) runs from Heathrow to Paddington Station. The journey on the Tube only takes approximately 35 minutes. And will cost you just £12.80 with an Oyster Card or with Contactless payment. (I’ll go into all the details about Oyster Cards and Contactless payment later in this post.) The Elizabeth line will also continue on into Central and East London. This way, you might even be able to get directly to your hotel.

The Picadilly Line

It’s always worth checking the official London Underground Website’s Journey Planner to see if you can take the Picadilly Line from the airport to your hotel. I stayed near Victoria Station, and I found that taking the Picadilly Line to Earl’s Court and switching to the District Line got me to my door in under 40 minutes. And for just £5.60 for Oyster Card holders or with contactless payment. It otherwise costs £6.30 if you pay in cash. It’s always worth checking the journey planner, but make sure you edit the preferences to include only the Underground only. See below.

Travelling from Gatwick Airport

If, on the other hand, you are arriving via Gatwick airport, we run into the same issue here with their “express” airport train service. The Gatwick Express one-way ticket costs £20 and takes 30 minutes to arrive at Victoria Station. But you can also take the Southern Railway from Gatwick Airport to the very same station. This ticket costs as little as £9.50 with an Oyster Card or Contactless payment. And takes a shocking 33 minutes, only 3 minutes more than the express train!

Navigating London’s public transportation system may seem daunting at first, but with a little bit of preparation and some basic knowledge, you can travel around the city like a pro. Whether you’re using the Tube, bus, or other modes of transportation, there are plenty of tips and tricks to help you get where you need to go quickly and easily. From planning your journey in advance and getting an Oyster card to minding the gap and being courteous to other passengers, these simple strategies can help you make the most of your time in London and avoid common pitfalls. While there are some months when the level of tourists can skyrocket, it’s difficult to find any time of year when the city is practically free of tourists. So best to just expect some level of crowds and plan accordingly. So, grab a cup of tea and join me as we explore the best times to travel to London. From charming spring blossoms to cozy winter nights, we’ll cover it all in this little guide.

Spring (March-May) 

Probably one of the most scenic times of year to visit London is during the Spring. The city bursts into life with blooming flowers and warmer weather.

Spring in London typically has mild temperatures ranging from 10-15°C (50-59°F), which makes it a comfortable time to explore the city. The pleasant weather is perfect for outdoor activities like walking tours and picnics in the park. Contrary to popular belief, Springtime in London isn’t actually the rainiest time of year. March and April have some of the lowest rainy days on the calendar.

Spring is a quieter time to visit London compared to the summer months. Fewer tourists crowd the streets and attractions. This means you’ll be able to enjoy a more peaceful and relaxed experience without feeling overwhelmed by the crowds. The prices for accommodations are also much lower in Springtime compared to the summer months.

And London’s springtime blooms are absolutely stunning. One of my favourite times of year is in the early Spring, just after the winter thaw when the Magnolia trees start to bloom. Exploring the many gardens around the city is a perfect itinerary for nature lovers. From the famous Kew Gardens to the smaller, lesser-known parks around the city, there are plenty of amazing places to see.

Spring Activities and Events

Springtime is also when the famous Chelsea Flower Show takes place. This event is a huge draw to many horticulturists from the UK and worldwide. And if you’re lucky enough to be in town, you should absolutely check it out if you have any inkling of a green thumb. Avoid the two weeks before and after Easter. Downsides to Travelling to London in the Spring

Compared to the longer days of summer, Spring has shorter daylight hours. This means you’ll have less time to explore the city in the daylight. This can be a challenge if you’re trying to fit in a lot of activities during a short trip. Springtime coincides with the British Easter holidays and the May Bank Holiday. While Spring is generally less busy, during these two weeks, tourism skyrockets. Attractions and accommodations may still be booked up far in advance. It’s important to plan ahead and book early to ensure you get the accommodations and attractions you want.

Summer (June – August)

Summer is the most popular time of year to visit London, and for a good reason. With long daylight hours, mild temperatures, and plenty of outdoor activities and events, it’s easy to see why so many people choose to travel to this bustling city during this season.

Summer is the warmest time of year, with average temperatures ranging from 18-23°C (64-73°F). This means you’ll enjoy plenty of sunshine and blue skies while exploring the city’s many outdoor attractions, parks, and gardens. During the summer, daylight hours in London can last up to 17 hours per day! So even at 9 pm, you still feel like the day is young. Many of London’s top attractions also have longer opening hours during the summer months. This is especially useful if you’re trying to cram as much as possible into a short trip.

Summer Activities and Events

Summer is also brimming with activities, events and festivals. It’s when the city feels alive. From the famous Wimbledon tennis tournament, London Pride, Trooping the Colour and Hampton Court Palace Festival, there’s always something going on in London during the summer months. And if something is sold out or booked up, finding an alternative isn’t hard! There’s just that much going on.

With the great weather, London is the perfect place to enjoy a range of outdoor activities. From picnics in the park to boat rides on the Thames, there’s no shortage of things to do outside London during the summer. Grab your picnic supplies from any of London’s bustling markets, which are especially lush with fresh produce in the summer!

Downsides to Travelling to London in the Summer

Without a doubt, because kids and teachers are out of school, Summer is the busiest time of year to travel to London. The city can get quite crowded with so many tourists visiting London during the summer months. Popular attractions, such as the Tower of London, the British Museum, and the London Eye, can have long lines, so you’ll need to be patient and carefully plan your visit to avoid crowds.

Summer is also the most expensive time to visit London, with flights, accommodations, and attractions often higher prices than during other seasons. This can make it more difficult to travel on a budget and may limit the amount of time you’re able to spend in the city. You’ll want to book as many restaurant reservations as you can in advance as well. This way, you won’t miss out on bucket-list meals.

While the weather in London during the summer is generally pleasant, occasional heat waves can make it uncomfortable to be outside for long periods. If you’re sensitive to heat, it’s important to plan your activities accordingly and take breaks in air-conditioned spaces when necessary. Despite, or perhaps due to, the summer heat, August is one of the heaviest months for rain. So be sure you plan accordingly. But never let the rain put you off. London is a city that can deal with rain, and there are hundreds of rainy-day activities to while away the time waiting for the rain to stop.

Autumn (September – November)

There is just something about London in the fall. To me, it’s the season that best resonates with the city itself. Like it was made for fall weather. Autumn is when the stunning fall foliage transforms London’s parks and gardens. Exploring Hyde Park, Kew Gardens, Hampstead Heath, St. Dunstan in the East and Little Venice all make for the perfect backdrops to experience the beauty of nature during this season. Grab a coat, a warm drink, and stroll through one of these stunning parks to truly appreciate the colours of fall in this vibrant city.

Autumn in London is generally mild and comfortable, with temperatures ranging from 8-15°C (46-59°F). As the summer heat wains, so do the prices and crowds. This can make it a great option for travellers who want to save money without sacrificing the quality of their trip.

Fall Activities and Events

Autumn is the quietest month in terms of events and festivals, but the benefit of this means fewer crowds. Although the UK doesn’t celebrate Halloween as we do in North America, they have an even more important celebration called Bonfire Night. Also known as Guy Fawkes Night. It is celebrated on November 5th and commemorates the failed plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament, dubbed the “Gunpowder Plot of 1605.” All over Britain, there are firework displays and bonfires with models of Guy Fawkes filled with newspapers. These are then set alight on the fire. It’s a wonderfully unique British tradition that is a joy to experience if you find yourself in London on that day.

Downsides to Travelling to London in the Spring

While autumn is generally mild and comfortable in London, occasional rain and cool spells can still exist. As you head into October and November, you start to see a real spike in the rainy days. Packaging for all types of weather, including a raincoat or umbrella, is important to ensure you’re prepared for any surprises.

While autumn is generally quieter than the summer, some attractions and accommodations may still be booked up in advance, particularly during peak travel times like the October half-term. It’s important to plan and book early to ensure you get the accommodations and attractions you want.

Christmas in London

Despite the rain and the cold, Christmastime in London is one of the most, if not the most, magical times of year to visit the city! And London never really gets that cold (coming from a Canadian, at least.) It rarely falls below 0°, and so long as you’re dressed for the weather, you can still get out there and enjoy walking around for short periods. 

London goes ALL OUT for the holidays! Dozens of entire city blocks are decorated to the nines with Christmas lights. And all big department stores transform their facades during the festive season. There are also many special Christmas events and activities like ice skating rinks, carol concerts, festive food menus and, best of all, the Christmas Markets!

London’s Hyde Park transforms into a magical winter wonderland during the holiday season. The park is filled with festive decorations, ice skating rinks, and a Christmas market, making it a great place to get into the holiday spirit.

Downsides to Travelling to London at Christmas

Many businesses and attractions in London are closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. And some close down for the entire week of Christmas altogether. It’s important to research which businesses and attractions are open during the holiday season, so you can make the most of your time in the city.

Probably the worst part of travelling during the winter is the increase in cold and flu bugs. Being sick can really put a damper on your trip. And when you’re pushing yourself to see and do it all, it can weaken your immune system. It’s important to take precautions when travelling during cold and flu season. Get lots of sleep, take some vitamin C, wash your hands frequently, and consider wearing a mask in confined spaces.

Winter (January – February)

While many people write off Winter travel, I am such a big fan! And I am not one of those people that loves the cold. Just the opposite. But travelling in the winter comes with so many benefits and unique opportunities. One of the biggest benefits of travelling to London in the winter is fewer crowds. While London is a popular destination year-round, the winter months are typically slower. You’ll have more room to explore the city’s famous landmarks and attractions without feeling overwhelmed by crowds.

Another advantage of visiting London in the winter is that prices for accommodations, flights, and attractions are generally lower. This can make visiting the city more affordable, especially if you’re on a budget.

Winter is a great time to enjoy indoor activities like museums, theatres, and shopping. London’s cold winter weather isn’t a surprise to the city. And as such, year after year, plenty of indoor activities keep you busy and warm. From world-class museums to cozy pubs, there’s always something to do in London, no matter the weather outside.

Winter Activities and Events

One of London’s most exciting events takes place on January 1st and is the New Year’s Day Parade. The parade features marching bands, floats, and performers from around the world, and it’s a great way to kick off the new year. You can also experience the London Art Fair, eat your heart out during the Chinese New Year and be amazed by the fashions seen all across the city during London Fashion Week in February. Come March; the streets explode with green banners and decorations for St. Patrick’s Day. Although St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish tradition, it is celebrated throughout London with parades and music and dance performances inside almost all the pubs.

Downsides to Travelling to London in the Winter

One of the biggest downsides of travelling to London in the winter is the cold and damp weather. Temperatures can dip below freezing, and rain and snow are not uncommon. Packing warm clothes and waterproof shoes is important so you can stay comfortable during your trip. London can be chilly and damp in the Winter from January to February. 

While February is one of the lightest months in the year in terms of rainfall, January is one of the heaviest, with December falling somewhere in between. And only on rare occasions does London get a dusting of snow. Although this year, we got a beautiful snow cover just a week before Christmas, and it was pretty magical to see.

You also need to keep in mind that London attractions will have reduced hours during the winter months. Many big attractions and museums close earlier in the day than throughout the rest of the year, as they don’t expect the same level of crowds. It’s important to check the hours of operation in advance, so you can plan your itinerary accordingly. 

And there you have it, dear reader! The best time to travel to London depends on what you want to experience during your trip. From the beautiful colours of autumn to the festive magic of Christmas, and the bustling energy of summer, London has something to offer year-round. So whether you prefer to bask in the summer sun, wander through golden leaves in autumn, or cozy up by a pub fire in the winter, London is always waiting to be explored.

Museums

Sir John Soane’s Museum

Tucked away in the quiet residential neighbourhood of Lincoln’s Inn Fields is the former home of one of London’s most acclaimed architects, Sir John Soane. But his old Georgian home, a Museum, isn’t just a boring old collection of architectural drawings. Inside you’ll find a fascinating and intimate peek into Soane’s personal life and outstanding collection of art and antiquities. 

What sets this museum apart is its unconventional layout, with rooms and galleries overflowing with objects and curiosities. It is arranged in a way that invites visitors to explore and discover unexpected surprises. Wandering through an endless labyrinth. Making your way around corners and secret rooms, you’ll find paintings by Canaletto, Hogarth, and Turner. Down in the crypts, you’ll discover ancient Egyptian objects, including the sarcophagus of Seti I.

In addition to the art collection, a tour through Soane’s home is an exemplary model his visionary architectural styles. This includes his ingenious use of light and darkness to create drama, emphasis, grandeur and intimacy. It’s a fantastic discovery for anyone looking for a unique museum in the centre of London.

Tate Britain

While the Tate Britain might have the cache of the “Tate” name, this museum is often considered one of London’s Hidden Gems. Almost always you’ll find people flocking to its more famous younger brother, the Tate Modern. But this museum is incredible in its own right. And personally, I find that its smaller size allows visitors to explore it more easily without feeling overwhelmed.

The museum, housed in a beautiful 19th-century building in Westminster, is home to an extensive collection of British art from the 16th century to the present. On a visit to England, I think it’s important to see more than just Britain’s stolen antiquities, but rather works of art from British artists themselves. These artworks help tell the story of British art and how it influenced other styles and artists around the world.

The museum’s permanent collection includes works by some of the greatest artists in British history, including J.M.W. Turner, Sir John Everett Millais, Francis Bacon, David Hockney and Henry Moore. In addition to its impressive permanent collection, Tate Britain hosts several temporary exhibitions throughout the year. These showcase the work of up-and-coming British contemporary artists and give you some insight into where Britain is headed artistically. I love this museum for its memorable works of art like Ophelia that I’ve seen in art books for years and finally get the chance to admire in person.

Wallace Collection

Although the Wallace Collection is considered one of the “best museums” in London, it is often one of the most overlooked. Just a stone’s throw away from Oxford Street, this magnificent museum houses a world-renowned collection of fine and decorative arts. When people hear decorative arts they might assume it’s nothing more than a collection of old furniture. But hidden among the Victorian stylings are some of the world’s most iconic paintings, like The Swing by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, The Laughing Cavalier by Frans Hals and Edward V and the Duke of York in the Tower by Delaroche.

Hertford House

But one of my favourite things about this museum is how personal it is. Hertford House has been home to the Marquess of Hertford since the 18th century. This wealthy family loved to collect and buy art and would display it here in the home. But it was the 4th Marquess, Sir Richard Wallace, who really put this art-collecting family on the map. His collection was so large and prestigious that he resided in Paris but used this house as his personal museum. 

When he died, he bequeathed the entire collection, along with the house, to the public. And while some of the rooms inside the house, like the stables and smoking room, were converted, other rooms in the house remain exactly as they would have looked when the house was owned by Sir Richard Wallace. Each room and gallery is arranged in a series of themes. Each with unique character and charm, creating a journey of discovery through the world the Wallace art collection.

Treasures of the British Library

I know what you’ll say, “the British Library isn’t a museum? Why is it listed here?” The British Library is a functional library with over 150 million books. Students and academics pour in through these doors daily to pursue and study the collection within. But inside is a hidden treasure that the public can enjoy. And that is the Treasures of the British Library. This small exhibition space inside the library contains the world’s greatest collections of books, manuscripts, and other literary treasures. 

The collections include everything from ancient papyrus scrolls and medieval manuscripts to modern first editions and rare and valuable books. Visitors can explore the vast archives and marvel at some of the world’s most famous literary works. This includes original copies of Shakespeare’s plays, first editions of Jane Austen novels, a Gutenberg Bible, and, most popular, an assemblage of lyrics and handwritten notes from the Beatles. The exhibition is even home to the original copy of the Magna Carta!

I was amazed by the absolute treasures I found in here. As a huge fan of the Gormenghast books, I was in awe of the hand-drawn characters made by Mervyn Peake himself. An insight into his process I would have never imagined before. The permanent collection space is quiet and free to enter, and a definite hidden gem for book lovers visiting London!

Leighton & Sambourne House

If you love history and interior design, boy, oh boy, do I have a hidden gem for you! The Leighton & Sambourne House are two Victorian townhomes located in the peaceful neighbourhood of Kensington. These homes have been transformed into public museums for visitors to explore. Both houses were the former residences of two famous British artists.

Leighton and Sambourne

Leighton House was home to Frederic, Lord Leighton, a leading British painter of the Victorian era. Leighton’s style was characterized by its attention to detail, vivid colours, and classical influences. He was known for his portraits, landscapes, and historical scenes, and his work often featured mythological and biblical themes. His most famous painting is Flaming June, one of the most iconic paintings of the period.

Sambourne House, on the other hand, was the home of Edward Linley Sambourne, a celebrated illustrator for Punch magazine. Punch magazine was a weekly satirical publication that was founded in 1841. Punch published cartoons, articles, and poetry that mocked the upper classes, politicians, and other authority figures. Both men were avid collectors and artists who wanted to make their homes a place of wonder and delight.

Leighton House

A visit to the Leighton house is such a delight as walking inside, you will enter an entirely unexpected world. The design of Leighton’s home and studio was heavily influenced by his travels to the Middle East, not Victorian Britain. Throughout the home, elements of Islamic art are woven into architecture. While the exterior mostly looks consistent with other red brick Victorian houses of the time, upon a second glance, you’ll notice the ornate domed roof, which gives the place a striking appearance.

The house’s interiors are equally impressive, with many rooms adorned with intricate mosaics, plasterwork, and paintings. The highlight of the house is undoubtedly the Arab Hall, a large reception room designed to display Leighton’s collection of Islamic tiles and ceramics. The room is decorated with a stunning mosaic frieze, ornate stucco work, and a fountain imported from Damascus. In addition to the fantastic architecture, the home contains a collection of Leighton’s paintings. As well as artworks by his contemporaries.

Sambourne House

Just a few doors down, inside the Sambourne house, you can marvel at a style called ‘Aestheticism.’ Aestheticism was a popular artistic movement that emerged in the late Victorian era in Britain. The idea of Aestheticism was influenced by the philosopher and art critic Walter Pater. Pater advocated for the pursuit of beauty and aesthetic pleasure as the highest ideal in life. I find it very similar to the popularity of maximalism we see today.

Aestheticism was also inspired by Japanese art and design. It featured stylized natural motifs, muted earthy colours like green, brown and blue, and an overall harmonious approach to furnishing. Sambourne felt furniture should be appreciated as an art form and not just viewed as utilitarian. He rejected the popularity of mass-produced furniture thanks to the growth of industrialization in Victorian London.

Whether you visit one of both homes, you’ll be delighted you did as they offer a unique and fascinating insight into two very different artists living in the Victorian era.

The Painted Hall

A trip to the peaceful borough Greenwich is a wonderful way to escape the dense city centre of London. You can get to Greenwich on the train, but I love taking the riverboat from Embankment Pier. It’s a fantastic way to view the city from another perspective. While in Greenwich, you need to check out the illustrious Painted Hall. The Painted Hall is a stunning masterpiece of art and architecture located inside the Old Royal Naval College. 

The Painted Hall is often referred to as, “Britain’s Sistine Chapel.” You will be craning your neck for ages taking in the 40,000 square feet of painted walls and ceilings. Britain’s finest examples of baroque art. The murals depict over 200 characters who tell the story of Britain’s political, scientific and cultural achievements. It focuses primarily on Britain’s naval endeavours woven amongst images of allegorical figures and scenes from mythology. The central mural focuses on the accessions to the throne of King William III and Queen Mary II in 1688 and George I in 1714. Key moment in the creation of Britain as a world power.

In addition to its stunning artwork, the Painted Hall is also an architectural marvel. It was originally designed as the dining room for pensioners at the Royal Hospital. But it wasn’t long before everyone wanted a peak inside! And before long, the building was opened up to the public to be admired as a museum.

Dennis Severs’ House

One of the most interesting museums in London can be found in the old historic neighbourhood of Spitalfields in the heart of London’s East End. The Dennis Severs’ House was the brainchild of artist Dennis Severs. He purchased the property in 1979 and spent the next 20 years transforming it into a living work of art. The house is a meticulous recreation of an 18th-century home. It offers visitors a glimpse into the lives of its fictional Huguenot silk-weaving family. Severs carefully curated every detail of the house, filling it with period-appropriate furniture, textiles, and decorations. Each room evoking the sights, sounds, and smells of a bygone era.

Visitors to Dennis Severs’ House are encouraged to experience the space as a living entity and to immerse themselves in the fictional world. They can see and hear the family’s daily activities as they explore the house, from the sound of footsteps on the stairs to the smell of cooking wafting from the kitchen. The museum’s immersive and interactive nature makes this place such a hidden gem.

Food & Drink

Host Cafe

I stumbled upon Host Cafe by complete accident. I was searching for architectural wonders in the area and knew St. Mary Aldermary was home to the most amazing Gothic interiors. But when I stepped inside, I was shocked to find that while the church’s interior had remained the same, a tiny coffee shop had been set up at the back. Visitors could enjoy a fancy latte while admiring the beautiful historic architecture inside. They had even set up a series of larger tables behind the nave where people were clacking away on their laptops, and small groups were having hushed meetings.

The original church was built in the 17th century by Sir Christopher Wren, the master builder of St. Paul’s Cathedral. The original church features have been preserved through this readaptation of the space. To ensure it lasts another lifetime. The soaring vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and wooden pews make even a simple coffee break feel like a special event. This was absolutely my favourite spot in the city to come and relax. All while watching the light stream in through those beautiful stained glass windows. A magical place to be. And the perfect escape on a rainy day.

St Martins Café in the Crypt

Café in the Crypt is one of those spots in London that is quite literally under your feet, but you might never know it’s there! This charming coffee cafe is just a stone’s throw from Trafalgar Square in the historic St. Martin-in-the-Fields church crypt. Yes, that’s right, you can dine and drink inside an 18th-century crypt. The entrance to the cafe is located just off Charing Cross Road, to the left of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. You’ll see a tall glass column with a winding staircase leading you down into the Crypt. There is also a small accessibility lift to help anyone in the basement which requires it.

As soon as you enter the cafe, you’ll be struck by the dramatic low lighting and spotlights that cast a warm glow to highlight the beautiful old brick vaults. Under your feet, you might be shocked that the old church tombstones are still there, with curious memories of the past for you to marvel at. The menu at Café in the Crypt is diverse and offers a range of coffee drinks, teas, and light bites. You can even come here for a luxury afternoon tea at only £18 per person.

One of the special features of the Café in the Crypt is its live music program, called “Crypt Lates,” which features a range of talented musicians performing jazz, classical, and other genres. The acoustics in the Crypt are excellent, and the music adds to the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. Check their website for upcoming performances.

Regency Cafe

If you’re looking to step back in time, there is perhaps no better place to visit than the Regency Cafe. This retro diner has been serving classic British breakfasts since 1946. And has become a beloved institution in London’s Westminster neighbourhood. The interior of the Regency Cafe is practically unchanged from the 40s. Bright red linoleum floors, Formica tables, red and white gingham curtains and, of course, photographs of Tottenham Hotspur football players decorate the nostalgic interior.

It’s a place packed with character and charm and always filled with locals and visitors alike. The owner is almost always behind the counter. And I was so delighted by how he always remembered everyone’s name after their order. Making it feel like you’ve been there 100 times before, even on your first visit.

But what sets the Regency Cafe apart is the food quality. The portions are more than generous, the ingredients are fresh, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. It’s the perfect spot for a hearty breakfast before exploring the city.

Mercado Mayfair

If it’s a food hall set inside a beautiful historic building with a real wow factor that you’re after, you need to check out the Mercado Mayfair. Just off busy Oxford Street, the Mercato Mayfair Market offers up fresh, artisanal and sustainably sourced food. All in the heart of this amazingly restored church. Thanks to this £5 million restoration, the original 19th-century church has been reclaimed and transformed into a modern eatery. Welcoming people from the neighbourhood and beyond.

The large nave has been transformed into a cafeteria-style dining room. And various food stalls are located inside the old side chapels. The market offers a range of unique culinary experiences, from authentic Neapolitan pizza to dumplings and, of course, fish and chips! An actual gin and beer distillery is hidden away in the basement’s crypt. Here you can sit inside a cozy alcove and have your very own beer flight tasting. All with alcohol made right under the floorboards. And for one last treat, make a trip up to the rooftop! Here you can get a small but stunning view of the city!

Maltby Street Market

Another of London’s Hidden Gems is the Maltby Street Market. Borough Market, while historic and amazing, is often overrun. And what was once the centre of the alternative scene, Camden Market has sold out and become a hub for big brands vying to disguise themselves as counterculture. But luckily for us, there is still one food market in London that feels like it has remained authentic to its roots. Maltby Street Market is tucked away in a railway arch in Bermondsey in South London. As you pass under the welcome arch, you feel like entering a secret garden and foodie oasis.

The narrow alleyways have stalls selling everything from freshly baked bread and pastries to cheese, meat, and seafood. There are also several bars and breweries offering craft beers and cocktails. Remember, even the less popular food market in London are still prone to be very busy. So best to get here early to beat the crowds and avoid certain stalls that can sell out.

Sights

Pickering Place

One of the best ways to explore the hidden recesses of London is to find these back courtyards. Tuckered away just off of some of the busiest streets in London. Often, you can go from throngs of people into an almost eerie silence as you pass through the alley into these oasis-like enclosures. One of my favourites has got to be Pickering Place. While the beauty in this square is one of its top qualities, it’s the history here that I find the most interesting.

This charming square is surrounded by iconic Georgian architecture and the original gas lamps that would have once set the area alight. While the area is a peaceful escape today, back in the 18th century, you would have found gambling dens, bear-baiting rings and even duelling grounds here. Because these courtyards were tucked away from the prying eyes of passing policemen, they were the perfect spots for these illicit activities. One of the most celebrated duels that were known to take place right here involved none other than Beau Brummel himself. He was known for being a confidante of King George IV and credited with popularizing the use of cravats in men’s fashion. 

Goodwin Court

Goodwin Court is another peaceful alleys in London that feels like it tells a whole story in just under a block of cobblestone roadway. Away from the bustling crowds, this charming courtyard near Covent Garden features some of the most striking architecture. And if it looks a little familiar to you, that is because this street was one of the areas that inspired the design of the wizard shopping street Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter novels and movies. But to me, this dark and almost ominous thoroughfare feels far more like Knockturn Alley. Where all the Dark Wizards came to do their sinister dealings…

The area itself dates back to the 17th century when it was known as Fishers Alley. Today, the architecture on display is a fantastic example of Georgian facades. The most impressive feature being the decorative window frames once used as window displays for the various businesses that would have lined this street. Be sure to stop and study the tiny details. From doorknockers to nameplates, as there is so much history painted into the architectural details of this street.

Fournier and Wilkes Street

Deep inside the streets once haunted by Jack the Ripper, in the heart of Spitalfields, are two of the most historic streets in London. Walking down these quiet cobblestone streets, you can get a feel for London at the turn of the 18th century. Fournier and Wilkes Street are considered one of the best-preserved examples of Georgian architecture in London. They are so period perfect that you’ll often see movies filming in the area as little to no set decoration is needed to send us back in time.

Many of the townhouses on Fournier and Wilkes Street were originally built as homes and workshops for the Huguenot weavers. Many retain their original features, including the high ceilings, elegant staircases, and large windows that allowed natural light to flood the weaving rooms. The architecture outside is characterized by its simple and elegant brick facades, sash windows, and wrought iron railings.

Southwark Cathedral

If you find yourself wanting to escape the crowds at Borough Market, consider a short visit to Southwark Cathedral. London has many famous churches, and with so many to see, Southwark often gets overlooked. This amazing cathedral dates back to the 12th century! For more than 800 years, people have been making the pilgrimage here. Looking inside and out, you’ll notice the patchwork nature of the architecture, reflecting its long history and the various stages of its construction.

The oldest part of the cathedral is the nave, built in the Romanesque style. The choir and transepts were added in the 13th and 14th centuries and built in the Early English Gothic style.

William Shakespeare’s Stained Glass

But one of the most interesting features of Southwark Cathedral is its association with William Shakespeare. It is believed that he worshipped in the cathedral when he lived in the area. In 2014, to commemorate the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth, a series of stained glass windows were created to honour the playwright. The three windows are located in the cathedral’s north transept, and each depicts scenes from one of Shakespeare’s plays. Below the series of windows is a sculpture of the man himself, reclining against a carved background of the city of London.

Cathedral Cat

Another unique part of a visit to the church is to see if you can spot their famous Cathedral Cat, Hodge. In 2008, the church found an abandoned cat had wandered in through the doors and taken up residence. But it was far from a nuisance; it patrolled the grounds and kept pesky mice away. No one had the heart to get it to leave, and soon the cat was as much a part of the heart and soul of the church. This cat was named Doorkins, and the public soon became obsessed with the little guy. So much so that the cat started its own Twitter account and inspired a children’s book, “Doorkins the Cathedral Cat.” Doorkins even met the Queen on her visit to the church in 2013.

Sadly, Doorkings passed away in 2020, leaving a hole in the hearts of all who visited the church. A new cathedral cat was sought out immediately and that is how Hodge came to live at the church. Hodge was rescued in the summer of 2020 and had a horrific growth on his face that had long been neglected. The church took care of the poor boy after his surgery, and he has since made a full recovery! Now, he is well loved by all those who liev, work and just visit the church.

The Theatre Mural in Shoreditch

Today, the Borough of Shoreditch is one of the best places in London to wander the streets and admire the incredible street art. It feels like no matter where you go, art permeates the entire neighbourhood. But one of my absolute favourite works of art in the area can be found on New Inn Broadway street. The whole facade is covered in a large mural depicting the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet. Juliet leans out of the large painted oval window at the top of the house and looks down below. At the bottom of the facade, we can see the image of Romeo beckoning up to her. While Shakespearan themes are an essential part of British culture, there is a more specific reason why this mural was painted in this particular location…

The First Shakespearean Theatre

Before Shakespeare’s Globe theatre was built, the first production of Romeo and Juliet ever to be performed occurred on this very spot. It was in a building called, very simply, ‘The Theatre.’ At the time, Shoreditch was where you could find anything from gambling dens to brothels and disorderly taverns. Theatres at the time weren’t the high-brow nights out they are today. Back then, a theatre would have fit right in with these places of low repute. After only 22 years, the Theatre was shut down. When it was dismantled, they unassembled the timber to use it to build portions of the new Globe theatre. How resourceful of these Elizabethans!

Pavillion Road

Pavillion Road is a delightful street in the heart of Chelsea. And while the entire street is home to a series of elegant Georgian townhouses, the stretch between Cadogan Gardens is where you’ll find a true hidden gem of London. Although it’s just one block long, this street is home to a huge collection of my favourite shops! As you pass under the welcoming swags of colourful bunting, you’ll enter what is dubbed “London’s longest and friendliest mews.” A British mews is a row of stables or carriage houses historically located behind grand townhouses or mansions.

Today, these old carriage houses have been converted into chic shops and restaurants, offering a range of goods and services from artisanal coffee, freshly baked bread, designer clothing, British cheese and unique stationery. Whether you’re looking to indulge in some of the best luxury foodies’ finds or simply soak up the atmosphere of one of London’s most picturesque streets, Pavillion Road is a must-visit destination!

Marylebone High Street

Whether looking for high-end fashion, artisanal chocolates, or handcrafted jewelry, you’ll find it all on Marylebone High Street. Since Marylebone High Street is just off the beaten path, away from the crowds of tourists that flock to other shopping areas in London, I find that you’ll often encounter fewer crowds and have a more relaxed shopping experience. And the street has a real sense of community, with many of the shops being family-owned and operated, giving it a distinctive local feel.

This old-fashioned and charming street, characterized by its elegant Georgian architecture, is one of my favourite spots to wander, window shop, and always stop inside Daunt Books to pick up my latest read.

Floris London

Floris is one of my favourite spots for a splurge in London. This luxurious perfumery has been a family operation since 1730! They received their first Royal Warrant when they made combs for King George IV. A Royal Warrant is a prestigious recognition granted by the royal family to companies or individuals who have supplied goods or services to the royal family for a minimum of five years. This warrant permits the company or person to display the royal coat of arms on their products, signifying that they are official suppliers to the royal family. It is one of the most significant marks of quality and excellence a business can get in Britain. And you can see the large royal coat of arms above the perfumery entrance.

All of the perfumes are made in Britain, using the finest essential oils and essences gathered from around the world. Floris is one of the few remaining independent perfumers in the city, and its elegant store and traditional approach to perfumery make it a true hidden gem. Coming to get perfume from this shop feels like a bucket list experience. Since scent is such a powerful memory trigger, I love picking up perfume while travelling to bring back all the memories of that holiday.

Buying Your Perfume

The store itself is a testament to the brand’s history and commitment to quality. The elegant shop features dark wood panelling, antique display cases, and a cozy seating area where you can sit and sample the fragrances at your leisure. If the full-size perfumes are too expensive, you can always opt for the smaller 10ml bottles that are around £22.00 each. A wonderful souvenir to come away with but at a price, more people can comfortably afford. Whether you’re looking for a signature scent or a special gift, Floris has something for everyone.

Peaceful Escapes

The Onion Garden

Hidden behind the otherwise stony Victoria Street is a true hidden gem called the Onion Garden. The garden was created by florist Jens Jakobsen. He transformed this previously austere concrete space into an enchanted micro-garden. The onion garden was inspired by the Egyptian’s worship of onions. They believed that the onion symbolized eternity as the anatomy of the onions was a circle-within-a-circle. Onions decorate the entire space along with other beautiful flowers and plant life.

Visitors can sit inside the micro-garden, enjoying a coffee amongst the flowers and plants all year long. They even had blankets to keep you warm in the winter. Jens wanted to help Londoners connect back to nature. And finding this spot was a lifesaver for me whenever I just wanted to zen out after a long day of exploring. And you don’t need to go far for that cup of coffee. FlatCap Coffee co opened a tiny coffee stall here where you can get some of the best brews in the city!

Postman’s Park

The tranquil Postman’s Park is enshrouded behind the shadow of St. Botolph’s Aldersgate church. Although it’s mere steps from the bustling financial district, it’s an oasis of peace. But aside from the lovely greenery and relaxing benches, what makes Postman’s Park truly special is its unique memorial to everyday heroes. The park is home to the Watts Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice. This striking monument honours brave men, women, and children who lost their lives while saving others.

The memorial consists of a series of ceramic tablets commemorating different acts of heroism. The tablets are inscribed with the hero’s name, age, occupation, and a brief description of their selfless act. The stories are poignant and heart-wrenching. And serve as a powerful reminder of the everyday heroism that often goes unnoticed in our busy lives.

If you’re a movie buff, you’ll also be interested to know that this park was used in filming the movie Closer, starring Jude Law and Natalie Portman. It is one of the more obscure filming locations in London but still one of the best!

Barbican Conservatory

Nestled in Finsbury, just north of the old City of London’s square mile, is what, at first glance, looks like the rainforest. And yet, here we are in the heart of London. This is the inside the Barbican Conservatory. This stunning oasis is one of the largest conservatories in the city. And is home to a breathtaking collection of exotic plants and trees from around the world.

The conservatory offers visitors the chance to unwind and soak up the beauty of nature. And get a literal breath of fresh air. The space is divided into different zones, each with unique plant life, including tropical rainforests, cacti gardens, and a desert zone.

Visitors can wander through the maze of pathways, taking in the plants’ vibrant colours and heady scents, and marvel at the stunning glass and steel architecture surrounding them. The conservatory also features several tranquil seating areas where visitors can relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Little Venice

Although London might be best known for its historic Thames River, another waterway here deserves your attention. Little Venice is a picturesque and charming area of London that is often overlooked by visitors to the city. In the northwestern corner of Paddington, Little Venice is a small community created around the old canals that connect at the central triangular Paddington basin. The canals of Little Venice were initially built in the early 19th century as part of the Grand Union Canal network, and today they offer a unique and peaceful way to explore the city. 

Visitors can take a boat ride along the canal or simply stroll along the towpath and admire the beautiful scenery. Many buildings surrounding the canals are gorgeous examples of Regency period architecture with white-painted stucco terraces and mansion blocks. But the most unique feature of the area is the quaint and colourful houseboats that line the canal’s edge. Owning a brick-and-mortar property in London has always been astronomical. And some early enterprising Londoners realized they could get prime real estate along the water. Today, there are even restaurants and cafes set inside floating barges along the river where you can grab a bite to eat or drink and enjoy the amazing views.

Highgate Cemetery

Although visiting a cemetery might seem like a depressing way to spend an afternoon, nothing could be further from the truth. Cemeteries are often beautiful places, wonderfully designed and filled with stunning greenery to make visitors, especially those in grief, feel a sense of peace. And Highgate Cemetery is no outlier. Located in north London, Highgate Cemetery is a large and sprawling graveyard known for its beautiful Victorian architecture, ornate tombs, and stunning funerary sculptures.

The cemetery was established in 1839 and quickly became one of the most fashionable places to be buried in London. Many of the city’s most notable figures, including Karl Marx, George Eliot, and Douglas Adams, are buried here. And their ornate tombs and memorials are a testament to their lasting legacies. Highgate Cemetery is divided into two parts: the East and West, each requiring a ticket to enter. The admission fees all go towards maintenance for his incredible outdoor oasis.
