Start Your Day at The Muffin Man Tea Shop

On a rainy day, there’s nothing quite like a hot breakfast to warm you up and get your day off to a great start! And in London, there is no shortage of cozy cafes where you can curl up. I also have an entire post dedicated to my favourite cozy coffee shops if none of these catch your fancy!

Ok, now, while this shop isn’t located on Drury Lane, but when I found out there was a cafe in London named the ‘Muffin Man,’ I knew I had to check this place out! Named after the children’s nursery rhyme of the same name, the Muffin Man Tea Shop is a charming and cozy little spot. Perfect for hiding away from the rain. The interior is decorated with a traditional English charm. Featuring quaint wooden tables and chairs, delicate lace curtains, and vintage tea sets. 

The menu is classic English breakfast food. It’s not fussy or fancy, perfect for the kids. Their Muffin Man pancakes with banana, blueberries, and cinnamon are amazing and a great option to share as well. As it’s only breakfast and not quiet time for afternoon tea, if you want to try something similar with your kids, go for the Muffin Man Tea set. This comes with a toasted teacake, a slice of cake and a pot of tea. And add a side of Devonshire cream to make it a ‘cream tea’ morning treat! Especially if you have kids who love to play tea time with their dolls, this is such an adorable place to take them for the real thing! But in a laid-back setting, you won’t feel like they’re out of place.

Explore London’s Natural History Museum 

After loading up on a filling breakfast, if the rain is still pounding the ground outside, it’s time to escape to one of the city’s most amazing museums. London is known for its world-class museums, and the Natural History Museum is one of the best, located inside the most impressive Victorian buildings. Since this museum is FREE to enter, I often come here on rainy days just to sit inside the awe-inspiring interior. While the museum is for everyone, it focuses on appealing to each of its incredible collections to kids. They aim to educate children about the natural world fun and engagingly.

The museum is home to an enormous collection of specimens, artifacts, and interactive exhibits that explore the natural world and its history. One of the most popular attractions for children is the Dinosaurs Gallery. This series of rooms features a range of animatronic dinosaurs, fossils, and interactive displays that bring these ancient creatures to life. Children can also explore the earth galleries, which showcase the planet’s geological history. Including volcanoes, earthquakes, and other natural phenomena. Be sure not to miss exploring the Hintze Hall, which features a suspended blue whale skeleton. Walking underneath this enormous creature, you can truly be in awe of its size and scale!

Warm Up inside the V&A Cafe

After a morning of exploring the museum, you’ll likely be ready for a warm and comforting meal. London has no shortage of cozy restaurants where you can indulge in delicious comfort food. But one of my favourite places to go on a rainy day is London’s Food Halls. More than any other city I’ve visited, London has a wealth of indoor Food Halls and Markets where you can find something for any appetite. Ok, now I know what you might be thinking: another museum? But let me tell you, inside the Victoria and Albert Museum is one of the city’s most amazingly decorated food halls! The V&A is FREE to enter, so just walk inside and make your way to the museum cafe. When I say “museum cafe,” you might be picturing a small, cramped room with bare white walls and stuffy, boring food. Which is the exact opposite of what kids like. But nothing could be further from what you’ll find inside the V&A Cafe.

The V&A Cafe has three sumptuously decorated rooms for diners to enjoy as they escape the rain. Designed by James Gamble, William Morris, and Edward Poynter, the various opulently decorated cafeteria rooms reflect the eclectic tastes of the Victorian era. But they are still enjoyed immensely by guests today. 

Bring a Packed Lunch

And this place has tons of kids inside! So you don’t need to worry about keeping quiet. Many school groups eat here so you won’t feel out of place. The cafe even goes out of its way to cater to kids, offering children specialty lunchtime meal boxes. Perfectly suited for kids’ palettes and appetites. And while the prices might be more inflated than at a small local cafe, you can’t beat the ambiance. But, if you really want to save a few pounds, you can also bring in your own packed lunches. I often stopped by my local Pret-a-Manger on the way to the V&A cafe and enjoyed my packed lunch inside this stunning interior. 

Get Transported at South Kensington Books

After lunch, if the rain is still hitting the pavement, there’s no better place to escape than a cozy bookstore. And London is home to some of the world’s most iconic bookstores! One of my favourite little shopping streets is Thurloe Street in South Kensington. Amongst the rows of elegant, 19th-century Victorian and Georgian buildings, you’ll find the charming entrance to South Kensington Books. South Kensington Books is an independent bookshop open at this site since the 1940s. They have strived for over 75 years to source some of the best British books for their local community.

Because Kensington is such a popular spot for families, they always have a wonderful selection of unique British children’s books. I found many beautifully illustrated books here that delighted the little ones back home. Since the store is small enough, you can let the kids explore on their own without worrying they’re get lost, like in the larger, chain bookshops. This way, they can find something they’re interested in while you can peruse something for yourself!

Explore the World’s Oldest Toy Shop Hamley’s

When you can’t go out and enjoy the sights on a rainy day, it’s the perfect time to hit the shops! London is known for its incredible shopping, and there are plenty of indoor destinations where you can stay dry while discovering all the wonders London stores offer. Hamley’s Toy Store is one of the most iconic places to bring your kids in London. Hamleys is world famous, holding the honour of being the world’s oldest toy store! The store opened in 1760 as a toy shop specializing in Noah’s Ark sets. It has expanded across seven floors, covering over 50,000 square feet. It is the oldest toy store and the world’s largest.

But Hamleys is not just any toy store; it’s a magical and enchanting world with live demonstrations, interactive displays, and fun activities that the kids can participate in. Regardless of whether you buy anything or not! 

Dine at Dishoom Covent Garden

London’s dining scene is wonderfully diverse, offering a range of cozy spots perfect for those grey, rainy evenings. When looking for a great place to dine on a chilly, rainy night, you’re looking for somewhere that combines comfort, warmth, and delightful cuisine. 

Dishoom Covent Garden, inspired by the old Irani cafés of Bombay, is a vibrant and welcoming spot perfect for large families. The restaurant’s chic decor creates a warm and inviting atmosphere for a cold and rainy evening. The aromatic spices from the kitchen and the gentle buzz of conversation add to its lively yet cozy ambiance. Dishoom offers a unique take on Indian cuisine with a menu that blends traditional Bombay flavours with a modern twist, creating a diverse and compelling culinary experience. Which I know might not sound like anything your kids would enjoy (especially if they’re picky eaters), but stick with me!

While Iranian cuisine might seem inaccessible for most kids, this restaurant prides itself on serving delicious food for kids and adults alike, no matter how familiar they are with Iranian food. While kids can enjoy everything off the regular menu, they also have a special chote (little) menu for kids with smaller portions, very little spice, but just as nice. And features the worldwide favourite kids meal item: chicken tenders, Dishoom style.

Be Awed at The Lion King

After a full day of exploring London’s rainless interiors, there’s nothing like settling in for one of London’s fantastical theatre shows! The Lyceum Theatre has been home to the world-famous musical The Lion King for years. And there is a good reason it’s stuck around for so long. The Lion King is one of the world’s most beloved and iconic musicals, based on the Disney animated film of the same name. But the stage adaptation of the musical is a breathtaking production.

The show features intricate costumes, elaborate masks, and life-sized puppets of animals that bring the show to life. And vibrant colours and dynamic performances bring the African savannah to London. It’s a must-see show for those looking to be transported to the Pride Lands. And be immersed in the world of Simba, Timon, Pumbaa, and the entire cast of memorable characters. While it’s more for the kids, adults will love the experience just as much!

Late Night Drink at Chin Chin Dessert Club

After your evening’s entertainment, if you’ve still got the energy, the best place to wind down on a rainy night is inside a cozy late-night spot perfect for the kids. On a rainy evening in London, a warm cup of hot cocoa is the best thing for kids. And the best place to have a great one is the Chin Chin Dessert Club! While the shop might be best known for its ice cream, it also offers unique and exciting hot chocolate flavours. Their signature Chin Chin Hot Chocolate has a gooey marshmallow fluff on top! But they also have seasonal variations like their Snowball Cookie Hot Chocolate.

As we wrap up our journey through London’s myriad of rainy day activities for kids, it’s clear that the city has no shortage of options to keep your little ones engaged and entertained, even when the weather isn’t cooperating. From the awe-inspiring natural history exhibits to the hands-on, creative art workshops in Hamley’s and cozy book corners, there are so many things to discover, rain or shine!

On a rainy day, there’s nothing quite like a hot cup of coffee or tea to start your day. And in London, there is no shortage of cozy cafes where you can curl up with a warming breakfast. In the centre of Fitzrovia is an old iron gate. Behind it, you’ll spot a stairwell leading you down into one of the best-hidden gems in London. Down below the surface, you are led into a stunning slice of history inside the Attendant Cafe. This quaint coffee shop is housed inside a former Victorian public restroom. Yes, you heard that right! This cafe serves up great coffee and delicious brunch options, all inside a beautifully restored Victorian interior. Enjoying your morning brew here, surrounded by the fantastical historical furnishings, is such a special way to start your day. Another hidden away location that doesn’t care about the rain.

Explore The Wallace Collection

After loading up on a filling breakfast, if the rain is still pounding the ground outside, it’s time to escape to one of the city’s most amazing museums. London is known for its world-class museums. And the Wallace Collection is a true gem among London’s many cultural institutions. It is often considered the best museum to visit for art lovers. Housed within a stunning 18th-century townhouse, the Wallace Collection boasts a breathtaking array of art. It includes everything from paintings, sculptures, porcelain, and furniture but is displayed like a living, personal collection rather than a stuffy, curated gallery. Visitors can explore works from renowned artists such as Titian, Rembrandt, and Fragonard. 

The museum itself is a work of art, featuring lavish period-styled rooms and elegant architecture. Stepping into the Wallace Collection feels like stepping back in time. A visit allows guests to immerse themselves in a historical and artistic ambiance.

Unlike some larger, more crowded museums in London, the Wallace Collection offers a more intimate and tranquil setting. Visitors can take their time to admire the art, reflect, and connect with each piece on a deeper level. I love escaping from the rain here, where the lavish, texture wallpaper envelopes me in a warm blanket of awe!

Warm Up with Market Comfort Food inside Mercato Mayfair

But one of my favourite places to go on a rainy day are London’s Food Halls. London stands out with its abundant indoor Food Halls and Markets, catering to every appetite. The Mercato Mayfair is an enchanting food hall housed in a restored historic building that was once St. Mark’s Church. This exquisitely renovated space retains much of its original architectural beauty, including stained glass windows and intricate stone details, creating a breathtaking backdrop for its main purpose as a vibrant food market.

The old nave has been cleared out of the old church pews. Instead, this area is transformed into a modern cafeteria-style shared-seating dinner room with rainbow-coloured tables. Adding a modern pop of colour to the old Greek revival architecture. The vibrant stalls beckon you in with their array of food from all over the world! From Italian pasta and pizza to Japanese sushi, Mexican street food, and Middle Eastern delicacies, there’s something to satisfy every palate. It’s a true paradise for food enthusiasts eager to explore a world of flavours in one place. In the basement, you’ll find a small brewery where they make the beer right on-site! Booths have been slotted into the old crypt where you and your friends can escape the rain! And enjoy a pint of beer or glass of gin.

Get Lost inside Daunt Books Marylebone

After lunch, if the rain is still hitting the pavement, there’s no better place to escape than a cozy bookstore. And London is home to some of the world’s most iconic bookstores! A visit to Daunt Books in Marylebone is a delightful journey for artsy book lovers. Located in the heart of Marylebone, this iconic bookstore exudes the dark academic aesthetic. Edwardian oak galleries, antique stained glass windows, emerald green walls and inviting décor all exude that old literary style.

Daunt Books is renowned for specializing in travel literature and hosts an unrivalled collection of travel guides. But for anyone interested in art, these travel books provide so many exciting insights into art from around the world. Pick up any book on the shelves, and you’ll be transported to far-off lands! All while in in the dry comfort of the Daunt library. In addition to travel books, Daunt Books offers a curated selection of chic stationary. Making it a one-stop destination for creative and artistic souls.

When you can’t go out and enjoy the sights on a rainy day, it’s the perfect time to hit the shops! The cinema was recently renovated and now features a stylish, modern interior with plush, comfortable seating and contemporary decor. If you’re looking to experience one of the most popular alternative movie-going experiences, this is the spot to be!

Get a Drink at the Fitzroy Tavern

The Fitzroy Tavern is a historic pub with a rich history dating back to the 1880s! The old pub was frequented by famous literary figures like George Orwell, Dylan Thomas, and George Bernard Shaw. The pub was a gathering place for the Fitzrovia Group, a circle of bohemian artists, writers, and intellectuals who lived and worked in the Fitzrovia area during the 1920s and 1930s. The artistic history of this pub makes it the perfect spot for art lovers to hide away from the rain while enjoying a hearty pint of ale.

On a rainy day, there’s nothing quite like a hot cup of coffee or tea to start your day. And in London, there is no shortage of cozy cafes where you can curl up with a warming breakfast. I also have an entire post dedicated to my favourite cozy coffee shops if none of these catch your fancy!

Classic: Café in the Crypt

Just off the iconic Trafalgar Square stands the old St Martin-in-the-Fields church. Trafalgar Square is smack dab in the centre of the tourist hubbub of London. But amongst the tourist traps and overpriced nonsense around here, Café in the Crypt is a true hidden gem. I mean, really, it’s actually hidden underground. Find the glass stairwell just side the church entrance leading to the crypt. Don’t worry; there are lots of signs to guide you inside.

Café in the Crypt is exactly like it sounds, a little coffee shop set up inside the ancient crypts of St Martin-in-the-Fields church. Although you might expect a hundred-year-old crypt to feel dark and eerie, the atmosphere down here is joyful. And it has a great community-type energy. It doesn’t get more classical than sipping your morning tea inside an old, architectural masterpiece. Even in the rain, down here, you won’t notice a difference.

Artsy: The Attendant

For an alternative coffee shop, you can’t beat the streets around Brick Lane, where you’ll find Artisan Coffee. A charming cafe nestled just off the main street, which serves a robust cappuccino and offer a variety of fresh pastries. The cafe is brightly lit, yet it retains a warm, inviting atmosphere, far from sterile or minimalist, and perfect to snuggle up inside on a rainy day. Wooden accents and green plants adorn the area, enhancing its coziness. There’s ample seating, and the vibe is very relaxed, with everyone around seeming very laid-back.

For the Kids: The Muffin Man Tea Shop

Ok, now, while this shop isn’t located on Drury Lane, but when I found out there was a cafe in London named the ‘Muffin Man,’ I knew I had to check this place out! Named after the children’s nursery rhyme of the same name, the Muffin Man Tea Shop is a charming and cozy little spot. Perfect for hiding away from the rain. The interior is decorated with a traditional English charm. Featuring quaint wooden tables and chairs, delicate lace curtains, and vintage tea sets. 

The menu is classic English breakfast food. It’s not fussy or fancy, perfect for the kids. Their Muffin Man pancakes with banana, blueberries, and cinnamon are amazing and a great option to share as well. As it’s only breakfast and not quiet time for afternoon tea, if you want to try something similar with your kids, go for the Muffin Man Tea set. This comes with a toasted teacake, a slice of cake and a pot of tea. And add a side of Devonshire cream to make it a ‘cream tea’ morning treat! Especially if you have kids who love to play tea time with their dolls, this is such an adorable place to take them for the real thing! But in a laid-back setting, you won’t feel like they’re out of place.

Explore London’s Best Museums

After loading up on a filling breakfast, if the rain is still pounding the ground outside, it’s time to escape to one of the city’s most amazing museums. London is known for its world-class museums. From art to history to science, there’s something for everyone. Here are a few of our favourite museums to explore.

Classic: The National Gallery

If you’re taking our classic tour, jump across to Trafalgar Square and into one of the best museums in the city, The National Gallery. This tour-de-force of a collection is FREE to explore. Inside are some of the most stunningly decorated neoclassical galleries to admire in addition to the actual art. Over 2,300 masterpieces from European artists such as Van Gogh, Botticelli, Turner and da Vinci line the walls. You’ll be able to see up close and in person painting you’ve more than likely encountered countless times in books or online. But nothing compares to walking up to them in real life and seeing the brushstrokes come to life before you. Paintings like the Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck, Rembrandt‘s Belshazzar’s Feast, the Ugly Duchess and Van Gogh‘s Sunflowers will take your breath away. 

I always advise people not to get overwhelmed by the sheer size of the collection. Take a highlights tour, or simply just one painting in each gallery to explore in more detail. Choose something you’re really drawn to and feel a connection with. This way, you’ll be much more likely to have a meaningful visit. Rather than trying to digest over 2,000 paintings in one short visit.

Artsy: The Wallace Collection

The Wallace Collection is a true gem among London’s many cultural institutions. It is often considered the best museum to visit for art lovers. Housed within a stunning 18th-century townhouse, the Wallace Collection boasts a breathtaking array of art. It includes everything from paintings, sculptures, porcelain, and furniture but is displayed like a living, personal collection rather than a stuffy, curated gallery. Visitors can explore works from renowned artists such as Titian, Rembrandt, and Fragonard. 

The museum itself is a work of art, featuring lavish period-styled rooms and elegant architecture. Stepping into the Wallace Collection feels like stepping back in time. A visit allows guests to immerse themselves in a historical and artistic ambiance.

Unlike some larger, more crowded museums in London, the Wallace Collection offers a more intimate and tranquil setting. Visitors can take their time to admire the art, reflect, and connect with each piece on a deeper level. I love escaping from the rain here, where the lavish, texture wallpaper envelopes me in a warm blanket of awe!

Alternative: Dennis Severs’ House

The Dennis Severs’ House is not your typical museum. Instead, it’s a meticulously recreated 18th-century home that serves as a time capsule. Transporting visitors back in time. As you walk through its rooms, you’re immersed in a world that feels authentically lived-in. As if its occupants just stepped out the front door, returning home any minute. The experience is designed to stimulate all your senses, making it feel like you’ve truly stepped into the past.

Dennis Severs’ House tells a unique and elaborate narrative through its rooms. Capturing the life of the fictional Jervis family, Huguenot silk weavers who once lived there. Each room represents a different moment in the family’s history. Complete with period-appropriate sights, sounds, and even scents. The immersive storytelling encourages visitors to imagine and engage with the house’s history, creating a deep connection to the past.

I love coming here on a rainy day when the fires are burning in the fireplaces, and you feel an immediate sense of coziness upon crossing the threshold. As you explore, you’ll be aware of the air of mystery about the home. As you move through its spaces, you will uncover hidden details and clues about the family’s life. This sense of discovery makes each visit a unique and engaging experience. The Dennis Severs’ House offers a rare escape from the modern world in a bustling city like London.

For the Kids: The Natural History Museum 

The Natural History Museum is one of London’s most impressive Victorian buildings. Since this museum is FREE to enter, I often come here on rainy days, just to sit inside the awe-inspiring interior. While the museum is for everyone, it focuses on appealing each of their incredible collections to kids. They aim to educate children about the natural world fun and engagingly.

The museum is home to an enormous collection of specimens, artifacts, and interactive exhibits that explore the natural world and its history. One of the most popular attractions for children is the Dinosaurs Gallery. This series of rooms features a range of animatronic dinosaurs, fossils, and interactive displays that bring these ancient creatures to life. Children can also explore the earth galleries, which showcase the planet’s geological history. Including volcanoes, earthquakes, and other natural phenomena. Be sure not to miss exploring the Hintze Hall, which features a suspended blue whale skeleton. Walking underneath this enormous creature, you can truly be in awe of its size and scale!

Warm Up with Market Comfort Food

After a morning of exploring the museum, you’ll likely be ready for a warm and comforting meal. London has no shortage of cozy restaurants where you can indulge in delicious comfort food. But one of my favourite places to go on a rainy day are London’s Food Halls. More than any other city I’ve visited, London has a wealth of indoor Food Halls and Markets where you can find something for any appetite. You can make your meal time an experience going from booth to booth, getting little bites to share so you can try as many different kinds of food as possible!

Classic: Seven Dials Market

For our classic tour, let’s head into one of central London’s most famous historical areas, Seven Dials. Seven Dials, named after the seven streets which converged here, was home to several prominent writers and artists, including Charles Dickens and William Hogarth. They each drew inspiration from the diverse and colourful characters that lived in the area. Although the neighbourhood was once plagued by poverty, crime, and disease, the historic buildings remain today, but the occupants are now upscale brands and classy restaurants.

Hidden within the area is the Seven Dials Market. This covered food hall features over 25 different stalls to choose from. Everything from street food and craft beer to artisanal coffee and fanciful desserts. My top pick for those looking for classic British food is a stop inside Pick & Cheese. This is the first cheese conveyor belt restaurant in the world! Here, you’ll find a myriad of artisanal cheeses from around the UK, paired with a selection of toppings and crackers. Each combination spins around the conveyor belt, enticing hungry guests to devour them. It’s a must-see for cheese lovers. And since Britain makes some of the world’s best cheese, it’s a place to try a few local varieties.

Artsy: Mercato Mayfair

The Mercato Mayfair is an enchanting food hall housed in a restored historic building that was once St. Mark’s Church. This exquisitely renovated space retains much of its original architectural beauty, including stained glass windows and intricate stone details, creating a breathtaking backdrop for its main purpose as a vibrant food market.

The old nave has been cleared out of the pews and instead features a modern cafeteria-style shared-seating dinner room with rainbow-coloured tables. Adding a modern pop of colour to the old Greek revival architecture. The vibrant stalls beckon you in with their array of food from all over the world! From Italian pasta and pizza to Japanese sushi, Mexican street food, and Middle Eastern delicacies, there’s something to satisfy every palate. It’s a true paradise for food enthusiasts eager to explore a world of flavours in one place. And in the basement, you’ll find a small brewery where they make the beer right on-site! Booths have been slotted into the old crypt where you and your friends can escape the rain over a pint of beer or glass of gin.

Alternative: Spitalfields Market

Spitalfields Market is steeped in history inside its 17th-century interior, yet it is located inside the alternative hipster hub in East London! Cobblestone streets and charming Victorian architecture surround it, but inside, this market is home to eclectic boutiques and modern fusion-style food! Spitalfields is the epicentre for alternative artists, designers, and creatives. The market is a treasure trove of artisanal crafts, handmade jewelry, funky artwork, and one-of-a-kind home decor. 

But for our purposes today, we’re here for the food! The market is world-renowned for its passionate street food scene. You can explore a world of culinary delights, with vendors serving everything from gourmet burgers and artisanal sandwiches to international street foods like falafel, dumplings, and more. It’s a paradise for food lovers who enjoy sampling a variety of cuisines. Their modern take on traditional English crumble, from Humble Crumble, is my favourite way to warm up on a rainy day!

For the Kids: The V&A Cafe

Ok, now I know what you might be thinking: another museum? But let me tell you, inside the Victoria and Albert Museum is one of the city’s most amazingly decorated food halls! The V&A is FREE to enter, so just walk inside and make your way to the museum cafe. When I say “museum cafe,” you might be picturing a small, cramped room with bare white walls and stuffy, boring food. Which is the exact opposite of what kids like. But nothing could be further from what you’ll find inside the V&A Cafe.

The V&A Cafe has three sumptuously decorated rooms for diners to enjoy as they escape the rain. Designed by James Gamble, William Morris, and Edward Poynter, the various opulently decorated cafeteria rooms reflect the eclectic tastes of the Victorian era. But they are still enjoyed immensely by guests today. 

And this place has tons of kids inside! So you don’t need to worry about keeping quiet. Many school groups eat here so you won’t feel out of place. The cafe even goes out of its way to cater to kids, offering children specialty lunchtime meal boxes. Perfectly suited for kids’ palettes and appetites. And while the prices might be more inflated than at a small local cafe, you can’t beat the ambiance. But, if you really want to save a few pounds, you can also bring in your own packed lunches. I often stopped by my local Pret-a-Manger on the way to the V&A cafe and enjoyed my packed lunch inside this stunning interior. 

Get Lost in a Bookstore

After lunch, if the rain is still hitting the pavement, there’s no better place to escape than a cozy bookstore. And London is home to some of the world’s most iconic bookstores!

Classic: Marchpane

Cecil Court is a tranquil pedestrian lane adorned with antiquarian bookstores. And nestled within the heart is Marchpane Rare Books—a hidden gem in London’s literary landscape. The spot has been a book lovers’ destination since it opened in 1989. Since then, it has become the premier specialist in vintage children’s and illustrated books and historic London ephemera. Marchpane prides itself in assembling the finest collection of collectible children’s classics such as Winnie-the-Pooh, Peter Pan, The Wind in the Willows and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Perusing the shelves here is like walking through a literary museum with many treasures. Even if you aren’t in the market for vintage literature, the beautiful illustrations inside these books are a classic exploration of Britain’s literary past.

Artsy: Daunt Books Marylebone

A visit to Daunt Books in Marylebone is a delightful journey for artsy book lovers. Located in the heart of Marylebone, this iconic bookstore exudes the dark academic aesthetic with its Edwardian oak galleries, antique stained glass windows, emerald green walls and inviting décor that exudes a sense of literary tradition.

Daunt Books is renowned for specializing in travel literature and hosts an unrivalled collection of travel guides. But for anyone interested in art, these travel books provide so many exciting insights into art from around the world. Pick up any book on the shelves, and you’ll be transported to far-off lands in the dry comfort of the Daunt library. In addition to travel books, Daunt Books offers a curated selection of stationary, making it a one-stop destination for creative and artistic souls.

Alternative: Libreria Bookshop

Libreria Bookshop, located on Hanbury Street, is an avant-garde bookstore that offers a distinctive and immersive experience for book enthusiasts. Libreria’s interior is a masterpiece of design and architecture. Conceived by the innovative studio SelgasCano, the space is characterized by its curved, tunnel-like bright yellow bookshelves that envelop all visitors.

The bookstore curates a carefully selected collection of books, focusing on quality rather than quantity. Books at Libreria are arranged thematically rather than by traditional genre or author. This allows visitors to discover new and unexpected connections between different works of fiction. This unique approach invites exploration and serendipitous discoveries. You can truly lose a whole day exploring this tranquil and inviting space here.

For the Kids: South Kensington Books

One of my favourite little shopping streets is Thurloe Street in South Kensington. Amongst the rows of elegant, 19th-century Victorian and Georgian buildings, you’ll find the charming entrance to South Kensington Books. South Kensington Books is an independent bookshop open at this site since the 1940s. They have strived for over 75 years to source some of the best British books for their local community. And because Kensington is such a popular spot for families, they always have a wonderful selection of unique British children’s books. I found many beautifully illustrated books here that delighted the little ones back home. Since the store is small enough, you can let the kids explore on their own without worrying they’re get lost, like in the larger, chain bookshops. This way, they can find something they’re interested in while you can peruse something for yourself!

When you can’t go out and enjoy the sights on a rainy day, it’s the perfect time to hit the shops! London is known for its incredible shopping, and there are plenty of indoor destinations where you can stay dry while discovering all the wonders London stores offer.

Classic: Covent Garden Apple Market

Covent Garden opened its first fruit and vegetable market in the 17th century. The fruit and veg have gone today, but it’s a popular shopping destination. Under the beautiful Georgian-covered arcade, you’ll find the Covent Garden Apple Market. But you won’t find any actual apples; instead, you can discover a series of stalls featuring artisanal craft, charming boutiques, and one-of-a-kind antiques. You can find plenty here if you’re interested in jewelry, artwork, clothing, or unique gifts! If you’re a tourist, the Apple Market is where you can find many locally crafted souvenirs that make for special mementos for your trip to London.

If you’re looking to explore one of London’s most fantastic department stores, which specializes in amazing artistic pieces, you need to check out Liberty London. Liberty is an iconic department store in the heart of London, known for its stunning architectural features. The building itself is a work of art. Walking up towards it, you’re immediately struck by its amazing and intricate Tudor-style timber façade. 

But inside is where the real magic happens… Liberty has a carefully curated selection of home decor, fashions, textiles and ceramics. Their merchandise often collaborates with renowned British fashion designers and artists to create exclusive collections. If you’re interested in wearable arty items, you’ll find a range of clothing and accessories that reflect the creativity of leading British designers. Liberty London‘s commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and artistic design makes it a must-visit destination for art lovers. And on a rainy day in London, the fantastical interior of this department store makes it an even more unique and amazing experience.

The Brick Lane Vintage Market, deep in the heart of East London, is a treasure trove for vintage enthusiasts. The old Truman Brewery has been transformed into a bustling underground vintage clothing market. Stepping down the stairs, you enter into a labyrinth of individual boutiques selling vintage and retro clothing from every decade!

Whether it’s glamorous fur coats, vintage bridal wear, men’s suits, or vinyl records, there are so many amazing discoveries to be made. The diversity of sellers adds to the treasure hunt that is a vintage shopping experience!

For the Kids: Hamley’s

Hamley’s Toy Store is one of the most iconic places to bring your kids in London. Hamleys is world famous, holding the honour of being the world’s oldest toy store! The store opened in 1760 as a toy shop specializing in Noah’s Ark sets. It has expanded across seven floors, covering over 50,000 square feet. It is the oldest toy store and the world’s largest.

But Hamleys is not just any toy store; it’s a magical and enchanting world with live demonstrations, interactive displays, and fun activities that the kids can participate in. Regardless of whether you buy anything or not!

London’s dining scene is wonderfully diverse, offering a range of cozy spots perfect for those grey, rainy evenings. When you’re looking for a great place to dine on a chilly, rainy night, you’re looking for somewhere that combines comfort, warmth, and delightful cuisine. Well, we’ve got you covered.

Classic: Clos Maggiore

Dinner at Clos Maggiore is like stepping into a fairy tale. The restaurant is a magical oasis often celebrated as one of the city’s most romantic dining spots. Tucked away in the bustling heart of Covent Garden, this enchanting restaurant wraps you in an atmosphere of warmth and elegance the moment you walk through the door. Imagine dining under a canopy of twinkling lights and lush flowers, with a cozy fireplace adding to the intimate ambiance. This former Victorian fire station charms with its vibrant yet intimate ambiance, offering a glimpse into a stylishly reimagined past. The interior is a visual delight, featuring high ceilings, exposed brickwork, and grand arched windows, complemented by plush, luxurious seating. The blend of industrial chic and opulent design creates an eclectic and visually stimulating setting, ideal for those who appreciate art and architecture.

The culinary experience at Chiltern Firehouse is as exceptional as its surroundings. The menu showcases contemporary interpretations of classic dishes, with a strong emphasis on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Each plate is a work of art, marrying bold flavours with the artistic presentation, reflecting the creativity of the kitchen.

If you’re in the mood for some seriously good modern Indian food, you’ve got to check out Gunpowder in Spitalfields. This place is a gem for anyone who loves a twist on classic Indian recipes. Tucked away near the lively Spitalfields market, Gunpowder has this cozy, kinda rustic vibe that’s all about chill sophistication and amazing flavours.

The menu is all about sharing and trying new things. Think small plates packed with big tastes, perfect for passing around the table. You’ve got to try their unique takes on street food and regional faves – like their mind-blowing spicy venison and vermicelli doughnut or the tangy mustard broccoli. Plus, they keep things fresh and exciting with seasonal updates, so there’s always something new to taste, depending on what’s in season. Trust me, a meal here is like an alternative adventure for your taste buds!

For the Kids: Dishoom Covent Garden

Dishoom Covent Garden, inspired by the old Irani cafés of Bombay, is a vibrant and welcoming spot perfect for large families. The restaurant’s chic decor creates a warm and inviting atmosphere for a cold and rainy evening. The aromatic spices from the kitchen and the gentle buzz of conversation add to its lively yet cozy ambiance. Dishoom offers a unique take on Indian cuisine with a menu that blends traditional Bombay flavours with a modern twist, creating a diverse and compelling culinary experience. 

While Iranian cuisine might seem inaccessible for most kids, this restaurant prides itself on serving delicious food for kids and adults alike, no matter how familiar they are with Iranian food. While kids can enjoy everything off the regular menu, they also have a special chote (little) menu for kids with smaller portions, very little spice, but just as nice.

Evening Entertainment

After a full day of exploring London’s rainless interiors, there’s nothing like settling in for a good movie or one of London’s fantastical theatre shows! Or if you’re into keeping active, there are plenty of entertaining experiences to be had indoors!

Classic: Les Mis

The Sondheim Theatre is home to London’s most renowned, longest-running musical, Les Mis. Although it’s set in France and written by famed French author Victor Hugo, Les Misérables became one of the most popular musicals when it was adapted into English by producer Cameron Mackintosh. The show opened in London in October 1985 and has remained a steadfast symbol of theatre in the West End. The epic musical features a captivating story of love, self-sacrifice, and redemption set against the backdrop of post-revolutionary France. Les Misérables is always a classic choice due to its universal appeal, timeless music, and emotional depth.

Artsy: Curzon Soho

The Curzon Soho, also known as the Curzon Cinema in Soho, is an art-house cinema which screens a diverse range of films that often include independent, foreign, and arthouse options. It caters to film enthusiasts looking for unique and thought-provoking cinema experiences. The cinema was recently renovated and now features a stylish, modern interior with plush, comfortable seating and contemporary decor. If you’re looking to experience one of the most popular alternative movie-going experiences, this is the spot to be!

Alternative: Bounce (Ping-Pong Bar)

Bounce is a funky ping-pong bar in Shoreditch that combines entertainment, sports, food, and drinks! Making it a sought-after destination for those seeking a memorable and unique night out. Bounce provides guests with a lively and engaging environment for anyone, regardless of their skill level. You can reserve tables in advance to enjoy a casual game with friends or for more competitive play with other guests. But Bounce is not just a ping pong venue; it also has a fully stocked bar. The bar serves a variety of cocktails, craft beers and wines. This is one of those alternative underground hot spots that you might not imagine could be just as incredibly fun as it is!

The Lyceum Theatre has been home to the world-famous musical “The Lion King” for years, and there is a good reason it’s stuck around for so long. “The Lion King” is one of the world’s most beloved and iconic musicals, based on the Disney animated film of the same name. But the stage adaptation of the musical is a breathtaking production. The show features intricate costumes, elaborate masks, and life-sized puppets of animals that bring the show to life like nothing else. The stage comes alive with vibrant colours and dynamic performances that bring the African savannah to life in front of your eyes. It’s a must-see show for those looking to be transported to the Pride Lands and be immersed in the world of Simba, Timon, Pumbaa, and the entire cast of memorable characters. While it’s more for the kids, adults will love the experience just as much!

Where to Get a Drink!

After your evening’s entertainment, if you’ve still got the energy, the best place to wind down on a rainy night is inside a cozy pub or tavern. And don’t worry; I’ve even got a late-night spot perfect for the kids.

Classic: Sherlock Holmes Pub

As the name suggests, the Sherlock Holmes Pub is dedicated to the iconic detective, Sherlock Holmes. The immersive decor brings visitors into the world of Holmes with dark wood panelling, vintage wallpaper, Victorian memorabilia, and period artifacts that transport you to 221B Baker Street.

The Sherlock Holmes Pub is a cozy place to sample various local beers and ales, where you can pull up your pint next to a recreation of Holme’s detective office. The atmosphere is infectious and is a great place to while the night away.

Artsy: The Fitzroy Tavern

The Fitzroy Tavern is a historic pub with a rich history dating back to the 1880s! The old pub was frequented by famous literary figures like George Orwell, Dylan Thomas, and George Bernard Shaw. The pub was a gathering place for the Fitzrovia Group, a circle of bohemian artists, writers, and intellectuals who lived and worked in the Fitzrovia area during the 1920s and 1930s. The artistic history of this pub makes it the perfect spot for art lovers to hide away from the rain while enjoying a hearty pint of ale.

Alternative: Simmons Bar

If you’re looking for a retro and quirky bar, you can’t go wrong with Simmons Bar on Old Street. Simmons Bars are known for their retro and eclectic decor, and the Old Street branch is no exception. The bar is adorned with vintage and mismatched furniture, retro wallpaper, old-school lampshades, and quirky knick-knacks. The nostalgic atmosphere takes you back in time, creating a unique and memorable setting.

The bar is known for its fun signature cocktails served in teapots, making for a whimsical experience. They also offer a variety of beers, wines, and spirits to cater to different tastes. The atmosphere at Simmons Bar is lively and welcoming, and you’ll walk away feeling like you’ve attended a blow-out 1980’s party!

For the Kids: Chin Chin Dessert Club

On a rainy evening in London, a warm cup of hot cocoa is the best thing for kids. And the best place to have a great one is the Chin Chin Dessert Club! While the shop might be best known for its ice cream, it also offers unique and exciting hot chocolate flavours. Their signature Chin Chin Hot Chocolate has a gooey marshmallow fluff on top! But they also have seasonal variations like their Snowball Cookie Hot Chocolate.

Take a Walking Tour of London’s Christmas Lights

Walking through London’s historic and charming streets, awash with twinkling lights is a magical Christmas experience like no other. 

Find your Favourite Christmas Market

London’s Christmas markets are a festive and enchanting experience for locals and visitors alike to celebrate the holiday season. The smell of mulled wine, roasted almonds, and gingerbread lingers in the cold winter air as you saunter around the alpine chalets. There are various markets you can explore all over the city. Each with its unique atmosphere, making it the right choice for your Christmas trip. We have a dedicated post where you can discover all the details to find your perfect match! Or see them all and judge the best for yourself!

Sing Along at Wednesday Carols on Columbia Road

Columbia Road is a vibrant and eclectic street in the East End that hosts the famous Columbia Road Flower Market. In the winter, the Columbia Road Flower Market is the perfect place to come to find fresh decor for the holiday season. Filling all the stands are boughs of holly, natural wreaths, mini-Christmas trees, poinsettias, holly, mistletoe, and various winter blooms.

Every Wednesday throughout December, the street’s independent shops stay open late. And St Peter’s choir comes out to lead the gathered crowds in carolling. They often drag an entire piano down the street, and trumpet players come out too to participate in the festive fun! The energy is unmatched, and this is my favourite place to come for Christmas spirit! The carols start at 7 pm, so arrive early to get a good spot near the piano. And be sure to stop at one of the shops where you can grab a mulled wine or hot chocolate to keep you warm as you sing.

Skate at Somerset House

The skating rink in front of Somerset House is a beloved and iconic winter attraction in London. Nestled in the courtyard of Somerset House, a neoclassical building on the Strand, this skating rink transforms the historic space into a winter wonderland.

If you don’t have your own skates, fear not. Somerset House provides skate rental services, ensuring everyone can join the fun. After a chilly spin on the ice, visitors can relax inside the Skate Lounge and enjoy a glass of Provence Rosé. Tickets for skating at Somerset House are typically available for purchase in advance. It’s a good idea to book early during the holiday season when it’s a popular attraction.

Indulgence in a Christmas Afternoon Tea

Booking yourself an indulgent Christmas Afternoon Tea in London is undoubtedly one of the most delightful and quintessentially British ways to celebrate the festive season. This cherished tradition combines the elegance of afternoon tea with the magic of Christmas. Many of London’s renowned tearooms and hotels go all out during the holiday season, crafting menus with various seasonal touches. The interiors of these tearooms are all decked out for the holidays. Festive decorations, twinkling lights, and beautifully adorned Christmas trees create a sublime atmosphere.

You can expect to indulge in delectable finger sandwiches with classic fillings like smoked salmon and cucumber but seasonal varieties like cranberry and brie. Next up are the freshly baked scones, served with clotted cream and Christmas-spiced jam. The star of the show is always the festive desserts. Gingerbread cookies, mince pies, and Christmas-themed pastries in delightful festive designs make the place look like a work of art. Each bite is a symphony of holiday spices, making your taste buds sing.

Experience a Victorian Christmas at the Dickens Museum 

Charles Dickens is often dubbed “the man who invented Christmas.” And although this isn’t entirely true, he did help in the creation of many iconic Victorian Christmas traditions we still use today. Located at 48 Doughty Street in Bloomsbury, the Charles Dickens Museum preserves the original home where Dickens lived from 1837 to 1839. In this house, Dickens wrote some of his most iconic works, including “Oliver Twist” and “Nicholas Nickleby.” 

The interiors have been meticulously restored to resemble how they would have looked during Dickens’ time. Complete with period furnishings, decorations, and personal items belonging to the author. But at Christmas, a visit to the museum is even more special. As you step through the museum’s doors, you’ll be greeted by a scene right out of a Dickens novel. The house is beautifully decorated with Victorian-era Christmas ornaments, greenery, and wreaths.

Every nook and cranny exudes the warmth and charm of a 19th-century Christmas, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Throughout the visit, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about various Victorian Christmas traditions. Discover how Christmas was celebrated in Dickens’ time, from the decorations to the food and drink. Don’t miss ending the visit with a stop inside their charming café where visitors can enjoy a cup of mulled wine and a fresh mince pie!

Enjoy the Outdoors at Christmas at Kew Gardens

Located just outside central London, Kew Gardens is a vast botanic garden that comes alive as the sun sets. While people might think of Kew Gardens as more of a spring and summer destination, winter brings an entirely different feel to the grounds. The gardens have been transformed into a winter wonderland with unbelievable Christmas lights and decorations.

The magical winter lights trail leads visitors around projections, tunnels of light, dancing waterside reflections, and trees drenched in jewel-like decorations. The entire experience ends at the famous Palm House, where you can enjoy a cup of mulled wine and mince pie while watching the musical Christmas experience.

Although outside the inner city, you can get to Kew Gardens in under 35 minutes on the tube. The Christmas celebrations start in mid-November and last until the first week of January. Tickets cost £21.50 off-peak hours and £26.50 during peak hours. Tickets sell out fast especially on weekends, so buying them well in advance is advised.

Discover Lavish Treats at Harrods Christmas Food Hall

Harrods, the world-famous luxury department store in London, is renowned for its opulence and grandeur, and Christmastime is Harrods Superbowl. During the festive season, this food hall transforms into a dazzling and decadent wonderland of gourmet delights. Making it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to savour the magic of Christmas in London.

Upon entering the Harrods Christmas Food Hall, you’ll be immediately transported into a world of sensory delight. The hall is lavishly decorated with elaborate Christmas displays, twinkling lights, and beautifully adorned garlands. It’s a visual feast that immerses visitors in the season’s magic.

The selection of festive treats and gourmet delights is nothing short of spectacular. From traditional Christmas puddings and mince pies to luxurious chocolates and handcrafted pastries. All these culinary treasures tempt your taste buds. Although you associate Harrods with ultra high-end luxury, I was pleasantly surprised to find many gourmet gift items weren’t prohibitively priced. Some of my favourite finds were the Christmas Spiced Honey (14£), Harrods Hot Chocolate Tin (13£), and Christmas Spiced Ground Coffee (15£). I also went in a few times to grab some of their Christmas pastries. The mince pie croissant and Christmas spiced scones were out of this world. Both were more expensive than my local bakery, but were some of the most invented and flavourful treats.

Join in with the Christmas Concert at St. Martin-in-the-Fields

A cherished Christmas tradition is carolling. And one of my favourite spots in the city to sing along and be wowed by some talented singers is at St. Martin-in-the-Fields. St. Martin-in-the-Fields church brings the magic of the holiday season to life through the power of music. Located in the heart of Trafalgar Square, this historic church provides a stunning and acoustically rich setting for these festive performances.

The church’s intimate size and charming architecture create a perfect backdrop for the Christmas concerts. With its soaring ceilings, elegant columns, and warm lighting, the church exudes a sense of tranquillity and wonder that complements the holiday atmosphere.

The Christmas concerts at St. Martin-in-the-Fields occur throughout December with candlelight concerts, carols for kids, Advent carols, Handel’s Messiah, Baroque Christmas carols and a Gospel Christmas. Almost all the concerts have a chance for you to sing along, but you’re always accompanied by the church’s renowned choir, the St. Martin’s Voices. Their angelic voices, combined with the church’s acoustics, create a truly transcendent auditory experience. 

Make Your Own Christmas Food Hamper at Borough Market 

A British Christmas tradition is giving and receiving gourmet food hampers. Wicker baskets filled with delicious treats date back to 1066, and Dickens even mentions in The Pickwick Papers “a hamper of spacious dimensions containing cold fowls, tongues, and bottles of wine.” In the 18th century, with the expansion of the railroads, wicker baskets were used to ship Christmas presents to family and friends across England. 

The trend caught on, and now, in almost every upscale department store in London, you can find Christmas Hampers filled with gourmet treats. But instead of these pre-made versions, I think it’s so much more fun to make one for yourself! And there is no better place to come at Christmas for seasonal produce and gourmet provisions than Borough Market.

Borough Market Christmas Decorations

Located in the Southwark, Borough Market is a renowned food market which has stood here since the 13th century. During the Christmas season, Borough Market transforms into a festive wonderland, offering an array of special Christmas provisions that capture the spirit of the holidays. The market stalls and surroundings are adorned with twinkling lights, wreaths, and decorations, creating a magical and festive ambiance. The air is filled with the aroma of seasonal spices and freshly baked goods.

What Goes in a Holiday Hamper?

To fill your basket, you want to look for traditional holiday treats like mince pies, Christmas puddings, and, of course, artisanal cheeses. Many of the region’s best cheese producers come to the market with seasonal variations that use ingredients like cranberries, figs, or spices.

 A holiday cheeseboard requires additions like crackers, pickles, honey and chutneys, all of which can be found throughout the market. Sweets and pastries like gingerbread are another wonderful addition to the basket.

You also want to grab a good bottle of mulled wines, spiced ciders, specialty teas, coffees, and hot chocolates to help you warm up on cold days with delightful holiday beverages.

Sip Hot Chocolate inside St. Mary Aldermary Church

Host Cafe located inside St. Mary Aldermary Church, is one of the most unique coffee shops in all of London. Set inside the amazing Gothic interior is a tiny coffee shop which welcomes visitors throughout the year. Here, you can enjoy a fancy latte while admiring the beautiful historic architecture. At Christmas, they feature seasonal delights and decorate the church with charming twinkle lights, Christmas trees and miles of garland. Best of all, the kindest and cheeriest baristas wear Christmas hats to get into the season’s spirit. There really is no better place to warm up on a chilly day in London!

Be Immersed in Christmas Cinema Classics

Backyard Cinema is known for its immersive cinematic experiences. During the holidays, Backyard Cinema hosts a delightful festive extravaganza of classic Christmas flicks! Everything from classics like Miracle on 34th Street, Home Alone and It’s a Wonderful Life to British favourites like Love Actually, The Holiday and, The Muppet Christmas Carol.

But Backyard Cinemas does more than just screen these films; they offer visitors an immersive experience. Last year, to enter the cinema, you stepped into an Arctic Express train carriage to “travel” to the North Pole. After entering the train car, yo watch an immersive show, followed by a walk through a mirror maze and enchanted forest. Entering the cinema, you’re met with winter transformations as a plethora of snow-topped spruce trees surrounds the cinema screen with a fresh dusting of snow on the floor. If you want to grab a mulled wine before the show, you can head to the Big Top Bar. Here, fires roar under the twinkle lights and decorative garlands. It’s hard to leave, but the show must go on!

Give Back to Charity at the Trafalgar Square Carol Sessions

Every year, more than 40 carol groups across London gather in the iconic Trafalgar Square under the great Nordic Christmas tree to sing and raise more for local charities. Performances take place throughout December, starting at 2 pm on the weekends and 4 pm on the weekdays, ending at 6 pm and 8 pm respectively. Trafalgar Square is one of the most emblematic images of London, and getting to experience it at Christmas surrounded by the festive Cheer of carollers is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Fill Up on Sunday Roast in Christmassy Pub

Pubs have been an integral part of British culture for centuries. Many pubs in London have a rich history, some dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. But a pub isn’t only a place to get a drink. It is a local hangout, restaurant and community centre for many residents. It’s a place where people from all backgrounds come together to relax, connect, and enjoy a cherished aspect of British culture. As such, pubs in London decorate their interiors as if they were someone’s home. Christmas trees find themselves crammed into every corner, lovingly decorated, adding to that homely charm.

The best time to go to the pub is on a Sunday to enjoy a traditional Sunday roast. A traditional British roast meal typically consists of roasted meat, usually beef in London, along with Yorkshire pudding, gravy, roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables. It’s so filling, hearty, and the best way to warm up on a chilly winter afternoon. Be sure to pair your roast with a cup of mulled wine to create the optimal Christmas meal!

Dine under Daphne’s Ornamental Roof

One of my favourite Christmas Lights displays is actually located inside one of my favourite restaurants. Daphne’s is located in the heart of Chelsea and is a local favourite for Italian cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. The decor changes slightly every year, but you can always expect Christmas lights and baubles hanging from the ceiling, like dining in a forest of Christmas decorations!

Christmas Carol at the Old Vic

The quintessential Christmas play has got to be Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” For years, the Old Vic, a historic theatre in London, has had a tradition of staging this beloved holiday story. Often, the theatre will secure a famed British actor to take on the infamous role of Scrooge. The sets are so lovingly created and make you feel as though you’ve stepped into Victorian London. Musicians take the stage, and fresh mince pies are enjoyed by the audience, adding to the immersive and enchanting atmosphere. With so much good theatre going on in London, it’s often hard to decide what to see, but this is a no-brainer at Christmas!

Do Your Christmas Shopping at Fortnum & Mason

Fortnum & Mason is a prestigious London department store whose iconic teal packaging symbolizes British luxury and refinement. Fortnum & Mason was founded in 1707 by William Fortnum and Hugh Mason. The company began as a purveyor of fine foods, teas, and other luxury goods, which caught the attention of the British aristocracy. With such endorsement, they skyrocketed to fame. Today, they remain true to their roots, selling premium tea blends, gourmet foods, and home decor.

Their location inside the historic Georgian house on Piccadilly is a destination for London shoppers. At Christmas, a visit here is such an elevated and enchanting experience. From floor to ceiling, the interior of Fortnum’s is one of the most glamorous Christmas interiors you’ll find anywhere in the city. Their world-class food hall sells various seasonal foods popular with food enthusiasts. I loved coming here to get extra special stocking stuffers like shortbread cookies in delightful Christmas tins, seasonal blend teas and even the King’s own blend of coffee.

Take a Trip to Windsor Castle

Only an hour from London is one of the UK’s most prestigious Castles, Windsor Castle. Windsor Castle, located in Berkshire County, is England’s oldest and largest occupied castle. Windsor Castle is a favoured weekend retreat for the British royal family, including newly crowned King Charles III. The castle’s architecture is a stunning blend of medieval, Gothic, and Georgian styles, making it a year-round sight. But Windsor Castle is all decked out with marvellous Christmas decorations during the Christmas season. Fresh greenery, holly, and berries are placed throughout the castle’s exterior, making you feel like you’ve entered a Christmas fairytale.

The State Apartments are completely transformed at this time of year with tasteful decorations and twinkling lights. In various rooms throughout the building are other Christmas trees, each with magnificent themed decorations. The most impressive of the trees is the 20-foot-high Nordmann Fir tree in St George’s Hall. The tree is grown in Windsor’s Great Park and dressed with 3,000 lights, hundreds of iridescent jewel-shaped ornaments, and purple velvet and satin ribbons. Its always an impressive sight. Be sure to check the event schedule online to see if you can schedule your visit during one of the Christmas choir concerts. During these performances local school choirs perform under the Christmas tree.

Immerse Yourself in Hogwarts in the Snow

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, a trip to London isn’t complete without going to the Warner Bros. Studio in Leavesden. A tour of the studios where they shot all eight films gives fans a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the wizarding world. And at Christmas, various sets are dressed for the festive season. Christmas was always an important touchstone in the books, and thanks to this, so many iconic Christmas set pieces make a special appearance in December.

The Great Hall is the centrepiece of the Christmas experience. The decor features the iconic Yule Ball set with its enchanting ice sculptures, snow-covered tables, and festive decorations on the tables. At the end of your tour, you will also be invited to see the intricate and massive Hogwarts Castle model. The model was used for the films, and at Christmas it is covered in rich blanket of snow. Be sure to grab something to eat and drink in the Backlot Café during your tour. I recommend a warm Butterbeer to complete your Hogwarts experience. Book tickets in advance, as this popular event tends to sell out quickly.

Bake with Elves in a Gingerbread Decorating Workshop

This year, St. Martins-in-the-Fields has an extra special offering for kids with their festive gingerbread decorating workshops! Step into their North Pole-themed Gingerbread kitchen, filled with yuletide decorations, where two jolly baker elves help to make Santa’s favourite festive treat: gingerbread! The parents can enjoy a glass of mulled wine or hot chocolate in the Crypt Cafe while the little ones play Gordon Ramsay in the kitchen. There is even a Christmassy sing-song finale at the end of your baking session, leaving you feeling filled with holiday cheer. And, of course, all your baked goods. For the parents,

Attend a Concert at the Royal Albert Hall

The Royal Albert Hall, located in the heart of South Kensington, is one of the world’s most iconic and prestigious concert venues. This historic and architecturally stunning venue, designed by the renowned British architects Captain Francis Fowke and Major-General Henry Y. D. Scott, is a masterpiece of Victorian architecture. Every year, the venue hosts a series of Christmas-themed programming that is bound to get you into the Christmas spirit. Best of all, there is something for everyone, from classic Christmas films accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to Gospel Choirs and evenings hosted by British entertainment royalty like Dame Judy Dench.

Go Back in Time at Hampton Court Palace’s Festive Fayre 

The magnificent palace of Hampton Court was built by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in the 16th century. But it wasn’t long after that King Henry VIII seized the palace for himself. Hampton Court became one of his favourite residences. It went on to be known for its opulence and blend of Tudor and Baroque architectural styles. Today, the palace is open to visitors, where they can explore the reconstructed rooms, lavishly decorated to reflect what life was like for the aristocracy in the 16th century.

This year, Hampton Court is hosting a festive Christmas fair on two weekends in December. The Festive Fayre is held within the palace’s stunning grounds, where food lovers can dive into gourmet treats, holiday favourites, locally crafted beverages, and seasonal delicacies. All set against the picturesque and historic backdrop of Hampton Court. Tickets to the Festive Fayre should be purchased in advance as the market is only open on December 1st – 3rd and 8th – 10th.

If you can’t make it out to the Festive Market, consider going out to the palace to enjoy an evening ice skating. Hampton Court Palace sets up an outdoor ice skating rink within its grounds where visitors can put on a pair of skates and glide around outside the illuminated historic palace.

Bring the Family to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park

The once placid Hyde Park is transformed into a spellbinding and whimsical wonderland at Christmas. Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is a dazzling festival of lights and decorations, a bustling Christmas Market and action-packed amusement rides. You can come here with the whole family and find something for everyone.

The park is filled with food stalls offering a diverse range of cuisine. You can indulge in traditional British fare like roasted chestnuts, mince pies, and international dishes from around the world. Don’t forget to sample the mulled wine and hot chocolate to keep warm. The iconic skating rink invites visitors to enjoy some delightful Christmas music as they skate with their loved ones. Winter Wonderland hosts live entertainment and shows, including circus performances, ice shows, and concerts. These performances add to the festive spirit and entertain the whole family.

Find the 12 Days of Christmas inside the Tower of London

The Tower of London, a historic fortress nestled along the banks of the River Thames, is an enduring symbol of Britain’s medieval grandeur. With a lineage that spans nearly a millennium, this iconic structure has served various roles over the centuries. It was a royal palace, a prison housing infamous inmates like Anne Boleyn, and a treasury guarding the Crown Jewels. 

Visitors can experience a magical transformation at Christmas with enchanting festive displays throughout the renowned fortress. As you explore the iconic castle, try to find all the 12 Days of Christmas brought to life in a distinctive Tower of London manner. The five gold coins represent the Tower’s original home to the Royal Mint. Find the twelve Yeoman Wardens and the nine rowdy ravens. And, of course, the Seven Wifes of Henry VIII. Beautiful Christmas trees pop up around the perimeter, and traditional decor brings a festive touch to the ancient fortress. 

Dance The Night Away at the Nutcracker

For many Londoners, going with the whole family for an enchanting night out at The Nutcracker, is a popular Christmas tradition. Tchaikovsky’s beloved Christmas classic follows little Clara, who is gifted an enchanted Nutcracker. Clara and the Nutcracker enter a mystical realm to battle the Mouse King. The show, set against an incredible live orchestra, is a fantastic experience and a great way to support the British artistic community.

Sample the M&S Christmas Range

Every August, British supermarket Marks & Spencer (M&S) announces its new Christmas range of products. Influencers are invited to their Christmas 2023 preview; admission to this is considered as big as tickets to the coronation! M&S Christmas range offers travellers some great budget-friendly gift options that feel high-end! Everything from adorable Christmas jumpers (sweaters), Percy Pig Christmas sweets, chocolate popcorn wreaths and bring-home figgy pudding. At Christmas, you can find seasonal sandwiches like brie and cranberry, pigs in a blanket, festive Christmas club and more! The perfect way to add a seasonal touch to an inexpensive lunch!

London truly shines as a winter wonderland during the Christmas season. There is an array of enchanting experiences that will warm the hearts of visitors and locals alike. From the sparkling lights along Oxford Street to the traditional charm of Christmas markets like Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, this city is a magical destination for all ages.

Tips for Exploring London’s Christmas Lights

When do the Lights Turn On?

In November, the lights start to be turned on, and they are kept up until early January. Thankfully, the sun goes down earlier in the winter, so the lights turn on around 5 p.m. This means you have lots of time to explore the illuminated city after the sun sets!

When is the Best Time to See the Lights?

If you want to avoid the huge Christmas crowds, you’re better off planning your trip in November. And be aware that weekends will be much busier than weekdays. I loved going out after dinner on a weeknight to explore the stunning laneways as a perfect nightcap to end a lovely evening.

But personally, I LOVED being right in the centre of London during the week leading up to Christmas. There was such a palpable atmosphere, with people flooding the streets and busy shoppers rushing around to finish getting everything on their Christmas lists. There really isn’t a bad time to come, just expect the crowds.

Trafalgar Square

We will start our tour in one of the most iconic spots in London: Trafalgar Square. Trafalgar Square is perhaps the most famous public square in the UK. It is in the centre of Westminster, just steps from many of the most iconic buildings in London. The square was built in the 19th century to honour the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. During this battle, the British navy captured a difficult victory against the Napoleonic off the coast of Cape Trafalgar. Nelson’s Column stands in the centre of the square. It towers over the rest of the courtyard at 169 feet tall and is guarded by four lion statues.

While the column is usually the tallest structure in the square, the colossal Christmas tree installed in the yard gives the column a run for its money. Since 1947, Norway has gifted the city of London with regal Norwegian spruce. The first tree was a gift to thank the British for their support during World War II. They decorate the tree in a simplistic Norwegian style, with only a few lights strung vertically yearly. It is erected 12 days before Christmas and remains in the square until 12 days after Christmas. Making the square even more festive is the fabulous Trafalgar Christmas Market. Over 20 stalls sell everything from Christmas ornaments, jewellery, hand-crafted goods and lots of sweets!

St. Martin-in-the-Fields Winter Lodge

Walking north up Charing Cross Road, stop behind the historic St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church, where they host a Winter Courtyard Bar inside a cozy winter lodge. You can sit beside a roaring fire and enjoy Christmas cocktails, mulled wine & cider, hot chocolate, beers, and seasonal snacks. The winter lodge is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout December. This is the perfect way to warm yourself up for the rest of the evening.

Leicester Square

Continuing along Charing Cross Road, cut through Irving Street and west towards Leicester Square. Leicester Square transforms itself at Christmas into a charming (although frequently very crowded) Holiday Market with alpine-style stalls and chalets. Hanging from the trees above are sparkling twinkle lights in the shape of giant snowflakes, which create a magical atmosphere in the heart of London. The various stalls in the market sell Christmas-themed goods, crafts, gifts, and holiday treats. If it’s not too busy, this is a great place to grab roast chestnuts or German Bratwurst.

Newport Place | Chinatown

Walking north from Leicester Square, cut across Cranbourn Street and up Leicester Court, past Lisle Street, to Newport Place. You’ll notice almost immediately the hundreds of Chinese paper lanterns hung throughout the entire Square that announces your entrance into London’s Chinatown. Chinatown is a vibrant and culturally rich neighbourhood home to diverse Asian cultures. Traditional Chinese elements are embedded in the architecture and signage, and the iconic red and gold colour scheme is used throughout the area. At Christmas, they even add some sparkling white twinkle lights to the trees around the Square, creating a beautiful blend of the two cultures.

Seven Dials

Walk through Chinatown along Gerrard Place, then turn onto Shaftesbury Avenue towards the infamous Seven Dials intersection. Seven Dials is a circular junction where seven streets converge, giving the area its distinctive name. It’s one of the liveliest parts of London, and at Christmas, their light displays are so dynamic. The central column is surrounded by starry snow globes lighting your entry into the Seven Dials.

Along the converging streets are vibrant pink and silver lights hung above the cobblestone streets. I love the modern take on the Christmas lights juxtaposed against the Victorian buildings.

Pick & Cheese

If you’re looking to grab a quick snack, head into the Seven Dials Food Market, which is also captivatingly decorated with Christmas lights. This chic multi-level food court is home to dozens of micro-restaurants & bars. My favourite is the Pick & Cheese Cheese Bar, the world’s first and only cheese conveyor belt restaurant. Here, you can pull up to the bar and admire their array of British cheese pairings swirling around under glass domes. Once you find one that catches your fancy, simply pull it off the belt and enjoy! At Christmas, they have specialty pairings that feature everything from Christmas Cheddars, pickled apples and brussel sprouts, fruits and soaked raisins.

St. Martin’s Courtyard

Walk back west along Shelton Street to St. Martin’s Courtyard. St. Martin’s Courtyard is hidden away, just off of Long Acre Street in Covent Garden. Walking into the courtyard, you pass under the most incredible oversized holly wreaths covered by bright white twinkle lights. The holly leaves seem to spill onto the street as boughs of garlands wrap around the shop windows.

Conduit Court

Passing one courtyard, make your way shortly across Long Acre and then through Conduit Court. Conduit Court is a historic alley connecting Long Acre to Floral Street. Industrial warehouses and small factories initially occupied this area. But in the mid-19th century, Conduit Court’s buildings were turned into commercial businesses. In recent years, an art installed called the “infinity chamber” takes visitors through a series of mirror-clad arches lit up with changing coloured lights. It’s a mesmerizing little cut-through.

King Street

Exiting onto Floral Street, cut across Rose Street towards King Street. King Street, a cobbled gem within the heart of Covent Garden, is a captivating blend of old-world elegance and modern sophistication. The street’s enchanting architecture, characterized by Georgian and Victorian facades adorned with charming bay windows and ornate ironwork, is a testament to London’s architectural heritage. And at Christmas, all the boutiques and artisanal shops go all out with their Christmas light displays.

St. Paul’s Church

Across from King Street, you can enter a side entrance into St. Paul’s Church. St. Paul’s Church is a secret spot inside Covent Garden, affectionately known as The Actors’ Church. It features a modest Christmas light display but is set in the most peaceful setting. Make sure to stop in and look at each of the benches lining the garden pathways dedicated to famous actors from London. St. Paul’s Church Covent Garden is a favourite among Londoners. Famed singer Gwen Stefani was even married to her first husband, Gavin Rossdale, in this church.

Covent Garden

From the church, make your way into the old Covent Garden Market. This historic marketplace is steeped in centuries of tradition, but at Christmas time, it is one of the most festive centres in London. The market’s elegant piazza, adorned with neoclassical architecture and lively street performances, is brimming with twinkle lights, Christmas trees, oversized wreaths and the smell of mulled wine emanating throughout the air.

Also, outside the Piazza, you’ll always find some special exhibitions. In years past, there was a special Frozen Christmas Village, and last year, Dolce and Gabanna set up a multicoloured light display that made for awe-inspiring photos!

Apple Market

Covent Garden’s Apple Market dates back to the 17th century when it was a bustling fruit and vegetable market. Today, it houses a crafts and antiques market. Walking inside, you will be overwhelmed by the fantastical giant silver and gold disco ornaments hanging from the ceiling, creating a kaleidoscope of lights reflecting off every surface. Oversized mistletoe chandeliers also dangle above, inviting romantic Christmas kisses.

Covent Garden Christmas Tree

You’ll find the mammoth Covent Garden Christmas tree outside the Apple Market! This Christmas tree is the largest hand-picked tree in all of London. In addition to this, the tree was grown at the same tree farm where the Royal family gets their Christmas trees. So it’s perhaps the poshest tree in London as well! It takes organizers over 300 hours to decorate the tree. And they even used a cherry picker to get those baubles to the top.

The area outside near the Christmas Tree is where visitors can get the chance to see “snow” falling in London. The snow falls every hour on the hour, so arrive accordingly. Sure, it might be fake snow made of soap, but how everyone erupts with delights and how magical it makes the space feel is all that matters!

The Strand

Make your south of the square, onto Southhampton Street, which lets you exit onto the famous Strand. This is a historic and prestigious thoroughfare that runs along the northern bank of the River Thames. All along the street, you’ll find famous landmarks and renowned institutions. At Christmas, they hand these beautiful light displays shaped like blue and gold ornaments hanging above the road. One of the best parts of this area is looking at the iconic red double-decker bus driving under the sparkling Christmas lights.

Somerset House

To finish the evening, continue along the Strand, past Landcaster Place, entering through the Northern arches to enter Somersert House. The Duke of Somerset once owned the property, but today, the building is often used to host events centred around arts and education.

At Christmas, the square is transformed into a giant fairytale-like ice skating rink. A massive 40-foot twinkling Christmas tree stands watch over the skaters. At night, the rink is illuminated in multicoloured lights, which create a magical atmosphere and highlight the architectural beauty of the building itself.

If you feel like putting on a pair of skates, this is a great opportunity to enjoy an iconic Christmas activity set in a historic London landmark. The best way to end a perfect evening exploring central London’s Christmas Lights!

TIP: Public Transport is Closed on Christmas Day

Before you start planning your Christmas morning adventures, a word of caution: there is no public transportation in London on Christmas Day. This includes buses, trams, London Underground and London Overground trains. Ubers are available but are priced at a premium due to the reduced number of cars and high demand. You might be able to hire a taxi, but they are very few and far between to find on the street. This means you’ll need to walk to your destination unless you have a car. London is a very walkable city, but just be sure to keep this in mind when thinking about your day. If you must be at St. Paul’s Cathedral at 9 a.m. and stay in Kensington, be prepared to leave the house at 7 a.m.

Consider Renting a Bike

Another option for transport on Christmas Day is to rent a bike. Santander Cycles is London’s official hire bike service, with over 800 docking stations and 12,000 bikes around London. Each ride costs £1.65 to undock your bike, and you can ride for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, you’ll be charged an extra £1.65 for each additional half hour. There are also e-bikes available in select stations. They cost £3.30 for 30 minutes. After you ride, you must return the bike to a docking station. Maps of the docking stations can be found on the app and online.

You can take out a bike using your bank card at the docking stations or download the Santander Cycles app. I prefer the app only because it’s often easier to use with foreign credit cards than the machine. 

Because the roads are often less busy on Christmas Day, it makes it a little less intimidating to use as a first-time user. London has many dedicated bike lanes for you to use; check out this map to find the best route for your Christmas Day adventures!

Take a Guided Christmas Walking Tour

One of the best ways to experience Christmas Day in London is by taking a Walking Tour. If you prefer a Guided experience, London Walks has two specialty tours that only run on Christmas. The first is the Christmas Day Charles Dickens Walk. This tour leads guests on a tour of London inspired by the life and works of Charles Dickens. Being the “man who invented Christmas,” it seems very fitting to spend the afternoon walking in his footsteps. You will be able to discover Victorian hideaways unchanged since Dicken’s day.

The other tour by London Walks takes visitors back to Christmas 1660 in the footsteps of London’s greatest diarist, Samuel Pepys. Between 1652 and 1660, Christmas, but after the death of Cromwell, Christmas was back in full swing! What a time to look back at one of the greatest Christmases in London’s history.

Explore Any Borough on a Self-Guided Walking Tour

If you prefer to take a self-guided tour, you can explore any neighbourhood around London with many available guides online. This is a wonderful way to spend a quiet morning or afternoon with friends. Discovering hidden parts of the city on one of the quietest days in the calendar year. A British tradition for many Londoners is to take a Christmas walk, so it feels very in the spirit of the holidays to participate!

See All the Christmas Lights

While the stores all might be shut, the Christmas Lights around London stay on! And the light displays in this city are some of the very best productions you’ll find anywhere in the world. So head out armed with a cozy Christmas sweater, an oversized scarf and hot thermos of tea to explore different neighbourhoods around the city to soak up all that glittering festive Christmas atmosphere.

Attend a Chrismas Morning Church Service

Whether you are religious or not, attending a Chrismas Morning Church Service is a very special and unique experience. And one that I always recommend. If attending church triggers you or makes you uncomfortable, skip it. But I found that tourists (so long as they were respectful and didn’t just stand there taking pictures) were more than welcome in church on Christmas Morning. 

Christmas Morning services are three of London’s most famous churches: St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and St Martin’s-in-the-Fields. I recommend attending the Parish Carol Service or Festal Evensong as the choirs at all these churches are some of the best in Britain. Hearing them sing in these historic buildings is truly an ethereal experience. 

Be sure to check their website for the exact times of each service on Christmas Day. And be prepared to arrive at least an hour in advance to line up (or queue up as they say in London) to ensure you get a spot inside as this is, after all, one of the most popular days for families to all attend church together.

Enjoy a Very Special Christmas Afternoon Tea

Select hotels and tea rooms around London offer up Christmas Day Afternoon Tea. These reservations get booked up months in advance! Make your booking as early as possible to avoid disappointment. If you find reservations are booked up, consider going in person and asking if they can add you to their waitlist. Christmas (or winter in general) is when lots of people get sick and need to cancel at the last minute, so you never know when you might get called in at the last minute!

 Christmas Day Afternoon Tea at the Ruben’s

My favourite place to go for Christmas Day Afternoon Tea is the Ruben’s at the Palace. Their Christmas Day Afternoon Tea is specially curated by their executive pastry chef, Sarah Houghting, who was a finalist in the 2021 Bake Off: The Professionals. The three-course menu features a scrumptious feast of cakes, pastries, and seasonal flavours that pay tribute to the long-standing English tradition of Afternoon Tea. You’ll be greeted with a glass of mulled wine or a glass of Champagne. Set against the tranquil backdrop of live piano music, playing all your Christmas favourites feels like the perfect way to spend Christmas Day in London!

Christmas Day Prices: £105 per adult, including a glass of champagne; £55 for children under 12.

Alternative options for Christmas Afternoon Tea can also be found at the Hotel Cafe Royal.

Take a Walk in the Park

Because it usually doesn’t get below zero on Christmas Day, a brisk walk in one of London’s many historic parks is a great way to get outside and explore London’s green space. While the trees may be bare, I was surprised to find many gardens still beautifully manicured and a lovely place to stroll. My favourite park is Kensington Gardens, and their Italian Gardens are a picturesque and serene oasis. You can admire the stunning ornamental water garden with classical sculptures, urns, and a reflecting pond. Even in the winter, you can spot waterfowl, making it a peaceful place for birdwatching.

Watch the Peter Pan Cup

Every year, at 9 a.m. on Christmas Day, members of the Serpentine Swimming Club leave their home’s cozy comfort to participate in one of London’s strangest (and chilliest) traditions. They meet at the Serpentine Lido (open-air swimming pool) in Hyde Park to jump into the waters for a 100-yard swim. The traditions have been going on since 1864, and the race winner gets to take home the coveted Peter Pan Cup. Swimming usually gets into the Christmas spirit by donning silly Christmas hats and sant beards to pair with their swimming trunks. Watching this event is so much fun, as long as you do not have to get into that cold water!

Take a Boat Ride on the Thames

Sights along the Thames River are a constant, and even when the city is closed, their iconic imagery along the water doesn’t change. City Experiences London runs a 1-hour River Cruise along the Thames on Christmas Day. Visitors can enjoy informative and entertaining commentary all about the historic riverside as they glide along. While it might be chilly on deck, the interior of the boars is heated for your comfort. But I recommend grabbing a hot mulled wine and mince pie to eat on deck to soak in the views.

Luxury Christmas Day Meals

Many of London’s premier hotels have specialty Christmas Day menus on offer. These reservations are booked far in advance but cost a pretty penny. Be prepared to spend a hefty sum, but the food quality and overall experience are unmatched. These hotels often cater to guests staying for the Christmas holidays, so they want them to feel like this is a meal made with love, just like they would get at home. But with a refined level of excellence and service.

Restaurants Open on Christmas Day

Savoy Grill | If you’re looking for a bucket list dining experience, consider booking yourself in for an unforgettable dining experience at Savoy Grill. The Savoy Grill, one of the most renowned eateries on The Strand and in the world, has undergone a historic renaissance, making it an even more famous dining destination than before. Their Christmas Day specially curated menu features traditional yet refined dishes that will delight the palette. | Price: £290 per adult and £100 per child 

NoMad London Christmas Lunch | Celebrate Christmas at NoMad London with their three-course pre-fixe, which showcases iconic Christmas staples and NoMad favourites. | £155 per person, and children (up to 12 years old) pay £75 per person. 

Orrey Restaurant | Located in the heart of Marylebone Village, the Orrey Restaurant celebrates Christmas Day inside their lavish converted stable block overlooking Marylebone Church Gardens. You’ll enjoy elegant French food for your Christmas meal, including salmon gravadlax, fromage blanc, orange Potato raviolo, wild mushrooms, Beef Wellington, pomme purée, Farmhouse cheeses, the classic Orrery tart, and, to finish, mulled wine sorbet and Petit fours. | Price: £159 Wine Pairing £105

Rubers Hotels | The menu features duck terrine, lobster thermidor omelette, black leg turkey, Scottish beef fillet, pork & apricot stuffing, pigs in blankets, honey glazed carrots & parsnips, brussels sprouts and homemade cranberry sauce, followed by a dessert of traditional Christmas pudding or British cheese board. | £250 per person

Causal Dining on Christmas Day

If you don’t want to spend a mint, there are various other options for more casual dining. Cinnamon Club is a fantastic Indian restaurant in Westminster that is always popular with Christmas day crowds. Duck and Waffle in Spitalfields is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even on Christmas Day! Perched in the clouds on the 40th floor of 110 Bishopsgate, this is also one of the best restaurants with stunning views across the city. Tayyabs is my favourite place in Whitechapel for incredible Indian food, open on Christmas day. 

Pubs Open on Christmas Day 

Wetherspoon is a chain of pubs across the UK, and many of their locations in London are open on Christmas Day. Call or check online for your local Wetherspoon’s to see if they will be available. They are an excellent choice for families as their extensive menu means everyone can find something to enjoy.

Fuller’s Pubs has beautiful pubs all across southern England, and at Christmas, four of their London locations remain open for a gorgeous Christmas Roast Meal. The Lamb & Flag in Covent Garden, The Sanctuary House Hotel in Westminster, The Star Tavern in Belgravia and The Swan in Hyde Park. A three-course meal on Christmas day is still £95, but you can always opt for the a-la-carte menu for something less expensive. Be sure to book in advance, if possible, to ensure yourself a spot!

Explore Chinatown

As is the case in many cities around the world, Chinatown is a popular destination on Christmas Day for those looking for something delicious to eat. London’s Chinatown has over 100 restaurants in only five square blocks, many of which remain open on Christmas Day. Rather than turkey, mince pies and mulled wine, you can get roast pork buns, sweet bean pastries and bubble tea here in Chinatown!

Where Does the Walking Tour Go?

This FREE walking tour will take you from Oxford Street, down Bond Street, over to Regent Street and ending along Carnaby. London’s most impressive Christmas lights are all found in this area. How Long is the Walking Tour?

The Mayfair and Soho London Christmas Lights Walking Tour is a two-hour-long leisurely walk. If you wanted to walk without stopping, you could cover the area in under an hour, but we want you to take your time and make stops along the way. Especially to fill up hot drinks to keep you warm!

What to Wear?

When venturing out to see the Christmas lights in London, it’s important to dress for the weather. While Winter in London isn’t as cold as other cities around the world, it can still get quite chilly, so dressing appropriately is essential to enjoy your festive outing.

  • Layered Clothing: Layering is key to staying warm. Start with a thermal or moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Add a warm sweater on top.
  • Winter Coat: Invest in a good-quality, insulated winter coat to provide warmth and protection from the cold. A waterproof coat is best to protect against the rain. Look for one with a hood to keep your head warm and dry.
  • Hat: A hat or beanie is essential to prevent heat loss from your head.
  • Scarf: A thick, woollen scarf can keep your neck warm and be pulled up to cover your face if necessary.
  • Gloves: Opt for insulated, waterproof gloves or mittens to keep your hands warm.
  • Thermal Leggings: We had days below zero last year, which is pretty rare for London, but on days like this, you should wear thermal leggings under your pants to add an extra layer of warmth.
  • Warm Socks: Invest in warm, moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet cozy. You can even wear two pairs if it’s exceptionally cold.
  • Waterproof Boots: Choose waterproof boots with insulation to keep your feet dry and warm. Ensure they have good traction to prevent slipping on icy or wet surfaces.
  • Hand and Foot Warmers: For extremely cold nights, consider using disposable hand and foot warmers that can be placed in your gloves and boots for extra warmth.
  • Umbrella: London’s winter weather can be unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to carry a compact, windproof umbrella in case of rain or snow.

Start Your Walking Tour: Oxford Street

Oxford Street is Europe’s busiest shopping street, with around half a million daily visitors and over 300 shops! Look up and down the street to admire the over one million twinkling stars raining down onto the pedestrians below. They are genuinely some of the most impressive sights in the city. And you can almost always spot a myriad of red double-decker buses, almost grazing the tops of the lights. This scene makes for the most perfect photo op!

South Molton Street

Make your way off Oxford street, down South Molton Street. South Molton Street was built in the mid-18th century, and much of the area still retains the original Georgian homes built in the 1900s. At Christmas time, it hosts a series of astonishing illuminated arches. Their bright blue glow beckons you in from far beyond. The blue is so bright, in fact, that it casts a blue glow over the entire street.

Claridge’s

As you reach the end of South Molton Street, turn west down Brook Street towards one of London’s most prestigious luxury hotels, Claridge’s. Claridge’s has a rich and storied history dating back to the early 19th century. Over the years, it has hosted royalty, celebrities, and dignitaries from around the world. The hotel’s elegant exterior is adorned with twinkling lights, lifesize Christmas trees and decorative garlands, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Each year, renowned fashion designers and artists are invited to create unique and imaginative Christmas trees that adorn the hotel’s lobby. Be sure to pop your head inside!

Grosvenor Square

Continuing down Brook Street, you’ll come to the entrance to Grosvenor Square. Grosvenor Square is one of London’s most prestigious garden squares. It transforms into a festive wonderland with a beautiful Christmas light installation during the Christmas season. The Square is adorned with 20,000 illuminated roses each year, forming a glowing carpet of flowers. Each flower can be purchased as a dedication to a lost loved one. All the money raised from these donations is then given to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Walking through the garden is a beautiful and sombre experience, especially at Christmas; it’s important to think of those who might be missing someone special.

Hedonism Wines

Make your way through the square, exiting onto Grosvenor Street and heading east. Turn down Davies Street until you arrive at the charming displays outside Hedonism Wines. Hedonism Wines is a luxury wine and spirits boutique in the heart of Mayfair. It has become somewhat of a destination for wine enthusiasts, especially during Christmas when it showcases its festive displays! Throughout the years, Hedonism Wines transformed its store exterior with enchanting decorations, and during the Christmas season, they make sure to go all out! You can get right up close to these displays, making them ideal for cute photo-ops.

Annabel’s

Walking along Davies Street onto Berkeley Square, take a few minutes to admire the stunning exterior Annabel’s private members club. Annabel’s is located inside a gorgeous Georgian mansion across the historic Berkeley Square. The highly exclusive club was established in 1963 for wealthy members to privately gamble after partying. Everyone from the Queen herself to Olivia Newton-John and Lady Gaga has been deemed important enough to be allowed inside these hallowed gates.

And while you might never have the chance to enter the fairytale-like interior, all can enjoy their out-of-this-world Christmas decorations! Every year, they try to outdo themselves with bigger and better designs. Last year, the entire exterior was transformed into a magical carousel!

Bond Street

Cross through Berkeley Square and make your way east onto Burton Street. Even from a distance, you can spot the twinkling lights beckoning you onto New Bond Street. New and Old Bond Streets are home to some of the most prestigious and expensive shops like Tiffany & Co, Sotheby’s and Bonhams. The Christmas installations here are larger than life! Framing the entire street are these twinkling designs made to emulate the shape of peacock feathers.

The peacock feathers honour a group called the Bond Street Loungers, who, in 1820, became well-known for their fabulous fashions. They often wore expensive wigs and were seen strutting up and down Bond Street as if they owned it. They were also often called the “peacocks,” and the Christmas lights shine on to commemorate their daring fashions.

Above the intersections are these amazing crowns that incorporate those same peacock designs but so subtly that only those in the know will see them.

Many of the high-end shops on the street go ALL OUT. Cartier, Fenwick, Dior, Stellar McCartney and Ralph Lauren are just some of the incredible shops that spend thousands on decking out this exterior facade for the holidays. Despite being some of London’s most expensive shops, you don’t need to spend a dime to enjoy their beautiful lighting displays.

Ralph’s Coffee

Near the end of Old Bond Street, make sure to stop inside Ralph’s Coffee for a cup of hot chocolate, tea or coffee to warm up! Ralph’s Coffee is a part of Ralph Lauren, the iconic American fashion brand known for its timeless style and commitment to luxury. Ralph’s Coffee embodies the classic and refined aesthetic. Their coffee shop is decorated for the holidays in the same traditional Ralph elegance. Outside are some cafe tables where you can sit down to enjoy your hot drink while soaking in all the Christmas ambiance.

Burlington Arcade

From Ralph’s, dash across the street and quickly saunter down Burlington Gardens until you reach the entrance to Burlington Arcade. This covered shopping street was built in 1819 and featured incredible Regency-era architecture. As this strip is home to many fine jewelry makers and bespoke tailors, they always decorate their interiors to entertain and amaze their high-end clients. Hanging from the glass roof is a series of giant disco balls and silver and gold baubles sparkling along the length of the arcade. Its covered roof also provides a little escape from the brisk wind (or potential rain) of London’s winter.

Piccadilly Arcade

Across the street from the Burlington Arcade is another covered shopping street, the Piccadilly Arcade. Piccadilly Arcade is a beautiful neo-classical covered shopping arcade known for its exclusive boutique shops that offer a curated selection of high-end luxury goods. The arcade’s interior is decorated in blue and silver mirrored snowflakes, illuminating the architectural details throughout the arcade.

Fortnum & Mason

Walking east along Piccadilly, it won’t be long before your eyes are amazed at the spectacular decorations outside Fortnum & Mason. Fortnum & Mason is a quintessential British emporium of gourmet food and elegant home decor. This historic establishment has been a symbol of sophistication since its founding in 1707. 

The store’s large street-facing windows are transformed into a magical life-size advent calendar with sumptuous garland and Christmas lights adorning the entire facade. Each window represented the days leading up to Christmas. A different window’s number lights up every day to count down the days until Christmas.

If you have time, pop inside to explore Fortnum & Mason’s Christmas holiday products. Shelves are stocked with seasonal delights, including beautifully packaged hampers, limited-edition teas, festive chocolates, and a wide array of culinary treats that make perfect gifts or indulgences during the holiday season.

Picadilly Circus

Making your way east along Piccadilly Street, at the intersection of Piccadilly and Regent Street, you’ll arrive at the famous Piccadilly Circus. Piccadilly Circus at Christmastime is an absolute spectacle of joy and festivity. As the sun sets, the junction of several major roads, including Piccadilly, Regent Street, Shaftesbury Avenue, and Coventry Street, Piccadilly Circus, are washed in illuminated lights. No matter where you look, you can see London all aglow.

Regent Street

From Piccadilly Circus, walk up Regent Street. Regent Street was designed in the early 19th century by the renowned architect John Nash to symbolize London’s grandeur and world-class urban planning. Regent Street was named after King George, the Prince Regent who reigned over England from 1820 to 1830. The sweeping curve of the street, the ornate facades, and the regal terraces make it a timeless icon of London’s magnificence.

The Regent Street lights are my favourite Christmas light installation. Soaring above the passersby are these giant “spirits” with sparkling wings. Many people refer to these as angels, but they are, in fact, officially called the spirits of Regent Street. 

The decorations were inspired by historic Christmas lights displayed initially on Regent Street that featured traditional angels playing trumpets. The illuminations were created with the input of the Crown since Regent Street is owned by the Royal Family, and they must approve everything. The spirits are made up of over 300,000 lights. Their golden 17-meter wingspan reaches across the entire length of the street. Watching over delighted shoppers. The lights glitter and flash, giving the effect of the fluttering wings. Almost as if they could simply take off at any moment.

Kingly Court

When you reach Beak Street, turn right and a quick left up through Kingly Court. Kingly Court is a three-storey alfresco food and dining destination nestled in a charming courtyard away from the bustling streets of Soho. The square has many restaurants, cafes, and eateries, making it a food lover’s paradise. Whether you’re craving international cuisine, street food, gourmet burgers, or artisanal coffee, you’ll find something to satisfy your palate here. This is the perfect place to stop for something to eat if you want to sit under the twinkling lights and fuel up for the rest of the evening.

Carnaby Street

After exploring Kingly Court, head one street over to explore the neon kaleidoscope that is Carnaby Street! Whereas Regent Street focuses on historical references, Carnaby Street aims to break away from tradition and draws you into a festive wonderland with unique and eye-catching decorations. Carnaby Street gets its name from ‘Karnaby House,’ a large and impressive mansion built here in 1683. The estate was so iconic that people began to refer to the area simply by that name.

Every year, the colourful streets of Carnaby explore a different theme that inspires their decorations. Everything from Rock and Roll to tropical carnivals and under-the-sea adventures. Last year, instead of creating something new, all the lights and designs from years past were collected to celebrate the history of Carnaby’s creative expression.

Liberty of London

To finish the night off, make a quick stop inside Liberty London, a luxury department store along historic Great Marlborough Street. The shop opened in 1875 and was immediately one of the most popular spots for high-end Christmas decorations. One of the iconic aspects of the store is the Tudor revival design of the building. Despite being a Tudo style, this was actually designed in 1920.

Every year, Liberty London unveils its festive Christmas window displays. The charming designs attract visitors from all over the city to gaze in awe at the delightful displays. Inside, the smell of balsam and eucalyptus fills the air with scents inspired by fragrant winter forests. Its enormous five-storey atrium is home to a fantastical paper Christmas tree with Christmas lights dangling from the ceiling. It’s a wonderful to behold.

Tips for Exploring London’s Christmas Lights

When do the Lights Turn On?

In November, the lights start to be turned on, and they are kept up until early January. Thankfully, the sun goes down earlier in the winter, so the lights turn on around 5 p.m. This means you have lots of time to explore the illuminated city after the sun sets!

When is the Best Time to See the Lights?

If you want to avoid the huge Christmas crowds, you’re better off planning your trip in November. And be aware that weekends will be much busier than weekdays. I loved going out after dinner on a weeknight to explore the stunning laneways as a perfect nightcap to end a lovely evening.

But personally, I LOVED being right in the centre of London during the week leading up to Christmas. There was such a palpable atmosphere, with people flooding the streets and busy shoppers rushing around to finish getting everything on their Christmas lists. There really isn’t a bad time to come, just expect the crowds.

Covent Garden Apple Market

Covent Garden’s Apple Market dates back to the 17th century when it was a bustling fruit and vegetable market. Today, it houses a crafts and antiques market. Walking inside, you will be overwhelmed by the fantastical giant silver and gold disco ornaments hanging from the ceiling, creating a kaleidoscope of lights reflecting off every surface. Oversized mistletoe chandeliers also dangle above, inviting romantic Christmas kisses.

Seven Dials

Seven Dials is a circular junction where seven streets converge, giving the area its distinctive name. It’s one of the liveliest parts of London, and at Christmas, their light displays are so dynamic. The central column is surrounded by starry snow globes.

Along the converging streets are vibrant pink and silver lights hung above the cobblestone streets. I love the modern take on the Christmas lights juxtaposed against the Victorian buildings.

Churchill Arms

Undoubtedly, the Churchill Arms is the most festive pub in the entire city. They put the rest of the city to shame with their incredible outdoor Christmas lights displays. The Churchill Arms is located in Kensington, just minutes from Kensington Palace. Kensington is one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in London. It is home to many international embassies and consulates and the residence of many politicians and billionaires. The pub dates back to 1750 and is named after Sir Winston Churchill, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945. The pub was even one of Churchill’s grandparent’s favourites when they lived there.

During the Christmas season, the pub is adorned with over 80 real Christmas trees literally hanging off the side of the building. It almost looks like something about Whoville. It requires over 130,000 lights to cover the exterior and takes over a month to install. While some might think it’s a bit tacky, I love how over-the-top they go with their designs. And I cannot wait to see how it gets more elaborate over the years.

Christmas at Kew Gardens

Located just outside central London, Kew Gardens is a vast botanic garden wonderland that comes alive as the sunsets over the city. While people might think of Kew Gardens as more of a spring and summer destination, winter brings an entirely different look and feel to the grounds. The gardens have been transformed with unbelievable Christmas lights and decorations for visitors to explore.

The magical winter lights trail leads visitors around projections, tunnels of light, dancing waterside reflections, and trees drenched in jewel-like lighting in all different colours. The entire experience ends at the famous Palm House, where you can enjoy a cup of mulled wine and mince-meat pies while watching their musical Christmas experience.

Although outside the inner city, you can get to Kew Gardens in under 35 minutes on the tube. The Christmas celebrations start in mid-November and last until the first week of January. Tickets cost £21.50 off-peak hours and £26.50 during peak hours. These tickets get sold out faster than you might expect, especially on weekends, so buying them well in advance is advised.

Fortnum & Mason

Fortnum & Mason is my favourite department store in London! Their award-winning window displays bring smiles to everyone passing them. They transform the facade into a giant advent calendar, with each exterior window numbered from one to twenty-five, decorated with lush garlands and cheerful twinkle lights. As the month passes, the numbers are illuminated individually, like doors opening on a massive advent calendar.

Oxford Street

If you are looking for a place to shop, there is no better street than Oxford Street. In fact, it is Europe’s busiest shopping street, with around half a million daily visitors and over 300 shops! Pavilion Road

Pavilion Road is a charming street in Chelsea near the Royal Borough of Kensington. Despite being close to the main road, this street truly feels like escaping back in time. At Christmas time, when the twinkly lights are strung up along the roofs and carollers can be heard singing in the distance, it feels like you’re inside a Charles Dickens novel. The road features a series of artisan food shops perfect for grabbing special items for your Christmas table. The jovial neighbourhood atmosphere along this street is palpable, and one of the best-hidden gems in the city!

Elizabeth Street

Elizabeth Street is a charming and picturesque street in the upscale neighbourhood of Belgravia. It is known for its quaint, village-like atmosphere, boutique shops, and, during the Christmas season, its beautifully adorned decorations that transform the borough into a festive wonderland.

Above the road, Elizabeth Street is adorned with festive lights in the shape of gorgeous chandeliers that illuminate the passersby with a warm and welcoming glow. These lights create a magical atmosphere and make evening strolls especially enchanting.

Many shops and boutiques on Elizabeth Street participate in the holiday festivities by decorating their storefronts with Christmas wreaths, garlands, and twinkling lights.

Strings of twinkling fairy lights create a warm and inviting atmosphere, especially in the evenings and the outdoor portion of the market is wrapped in giant red ribbons, making the entire place feel like a giant Christmas present wrapped just for you!

Harrods

Founded in 1834 by Charles Henry Harrod, Harrods Department store, located in Knightsbridge, is perhaps the most famous shopping mall in all of London! If not the most recognizable name for luxury, it is known worldwide. Harrods goes all out with its Christmas decorations. Every year, they go about transforming the exterior, as well as the interior, of the store into a fantastical winter wonderland. Last year, Christan Dior took over the light displays on the facade with giant starbursts that sparkled like the stars in the moonlight.

Inside, Harrods Christmas displays are known for their extravagance and attention to detail. While they might be far above your Christmas budget, wandering around the displays is a great way to get inspiration for your home and enjoy the stunning Christmas atmosphere.

Tips for Exploring London’s Christmas Lights

Where Can You Find London’s Best Christmas Lights?

The lighting displays are located all over the city. You’ll need to bounce around on the tube to see them all. But my advice is to pick one neighbourhood to explore. I’ve divided this post into different boroughs, so you know which area every display is located. That way, you can find out which areas interest you most.

When do the Lights Turn On?

In November, the lights start to be turned on, and they are kept up until early January. Thankfully, the sun goes down earlier in the winter, so the lights turn on around 5 p.m. This means you have lots of time to explore the illuminated city after the sun sets!

When is the Best Time to See the Lights?

If you want to avoid the huge Christmas crowds, you’re better off planning your trip in November. And be aware that weekends will be much busier than weekdays. I loved going out after dinner on a weeknight to explore the stunning laneways as a perfect nightcap to end a lovely evening.

But personally, I LOVED being right in the centre of London during the week leading up to Christmas. There was such a palpable atmosphere, with people flooding the streets and busy shoppers rushing around to finish getting everything on their Christmas lists. There really isn’t a bad time to come, just expect the crowds.

What to Wear

When venturing out to see the Christmas lights in London, it’s important to dress for the weather. While Winter in London isn’t as cold as other cities around the world, it can still get quite chilly, so dressing appropriately is essential to enjoy your festive outing.

  • Layered Clothing: Layering is key to staying warm. Start with a thermal or moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Add a warm sweater on top.
  • Winter Coat: Invest in a good-quality, insulated winter coat to provide warmth and protection from the cold. A waterproof coat is best to protect against the rain. Look for one with a hood to keep your head warm and dry.
  • Hat: A hat or beanie is essential to prevent heat loss from your head.
  • Scarf: A thick, woollen scarf can keep your neck warm and be pulled up to cover your face if necessary.
  • Gloves: Opt for insulated, waterproof gloves or mittens to keep your hands warm.
  • Thermal Leggings: We had days below zero last year, which is pretty rare for London, but on days like this, you should wear thermal leggings under your pants to add an extra layer of warmth.
  • Warm Socks: Invest in warm, moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet cozy. You can even wear two pairs if it’s exceptionally cold.
  • Waterproof Boots: Choose waterproof boots with insulation to keep your feet dry and warm. Ensure they have good traction to prevent slipping on icy or wet surfaces.
  • Hand and Foot Warmers: For extremely cold nights, consider using disposable hand and foot warmers that can be placed in your gloves and boots for extra warmth.
  • Umbrella: London’s winter weather can be unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to carry a compact, windproof umbrella in case of rain or snow.

Covent Garden

Although most people think of Covent Garden as the ever-so-charming marketplace, Covent Garden is actually the name of an entire neighbourhood in West London. The area is bounded to the east and west by the Kingsway and Charing Cross Road. And north-south by Holborn Street and the Strand.

Covent Garden Market Piazza

Start your walk at the old Covent Garden Market. This historic marketplace is steeped in centuries of tradition, but at Christmas time, it is one of the most festive centres in London. The market’s elegant piazza, adorned with neoclassical architecture and lively street performances, is brimming with twinkle lights, Christmas trees, oversized wreaths and the smell of mulled wine emanating throughout the air.

Also, outside the Piazza, you’ll always find some special exhibitions. In years past, there was a special Frozen Christmas Village, and last year, Dolce and Gabanna set up a multicoloured light display that made for awe-inspiring photos!

Apple Market

Covent Garden’s Apple Market dates back to the 17th century when it was a bustling fruit and vegetable market. Today, it houses a crafts and antiques market. Walking inside, you will be overwhelmed by the fantastical giant silver and gold disco ornaments hanging from the ceiling, creating a kaleidoscope of lights reflecting off every surface. Oversized mistletoe chandeliers also dangle above, inviting romantic Christmas kisses.

Covent Garden Christmas Tree

You’ll find the mammoth Covent Garden Christmas tree outside the Apple Market! This Christmas tree is the largest hand-picked tree in all of London. In addition to this, the tree was grown at the same tree farm where the Royal family gets their Christmas trees. So it’s perhaps the poshest tree in London as well! It takes organizers over 300 hours to decorate the tree. And they even used a cherry picker to get those baubles to the top.

The area outside near the Christmas Tree is where visitors can get the chance to see “snow” falling in London. The snow falls every hour on the hour, so arrive accordingly. Sure, it might be fake snow made of soap, but how everyone erupts with delights and how magical it makes the space feel is all that matters!

King Street

King Street, a cobbled gem within the heart of Covent Garden, is a captivating blend of old-world elegance and modern sophistication. The street’s enchanting architecture, characterized by Georgian and Victorian facades adorned with charming bay windows and ornate ironwork, is a testament to London’s architectural heritage. And at Christmas, all the boutiques and artisanal shops go all out with their Christmas light displays.

St. Paul’s Church

St. Paul’s Church is a secret spot inside Covent Garden, affectionately known as The Actors’ Church. It features a modest Christmas light display but is set in the most peaceful setting. Make sure to stop in and look at each of the benches lining the garden pathways dedicated to famous actors from London. St. Paul’s Church Covent Garden is a favourite among Londoners. Famed singer Gwen Stefani was even married to her first husband, Gavin Rossdale, in this church.

Seven Dials

Head north towards the Seven Dials. Seven Dials is a circular junction where seven streets converge, giving the area its distinctive name. It’s one of the liveliest parts of London, and at Christmas, their light displays are so dynamic. The central column is surrounded by starry snow globes.

Along the converging streets are vibrant pink and silver lights hung above the cobblestone streets. I love the modern take on the Christmas lights juxtaposed against the Victorian buildings.

St. Martin’s Courtyard

St. Martin’s Courtyard is hidden away, just off of Long Acre Street in Covent Garden. Walking into the courtyard, you pass under the most incredible oversized holly wreaths covered by bright white twinkle lights. The holly leaves seem to spill onto the street as boughs of garlands wrap around the shop windows.

St. Martin’s Lane

Walking back, take a stroll along Saint Martin’s Lane. Saint Martin’s Lane is where many of the most important theatres are located, making it a hub for entertainment and culture. This area is famous for its vibrant nightlife, upscale hotels, and trendy restaurants. The lane is decorated with different Christmas street lights hung above walkways. But all the stylish restaurants in the area go all out with their Christmas displays, adding to the festive environment.

The Strand

Walking south towards the river, you arrive along the famous Strand. This is a historic and prestigious thoroughfare that runs along the northern bank of the River Thames. All along the street, you’ll find famous landmarks and renowned institutions. At Christmas, they hand these beautiful light displays shaped like blue and gold ornaments hanging above the road. One of the best parts of this area is looking at the iconic red double-decker bus driving under the sparkling Christmas lights.

Somerset House

On the south side of the Strand, just beyond Waterloo Bridge, you will find the Neoclassical landmark Somerset House. The Duke of Somerset once owned the property, but today, the building is often used to host events centred around arts and education.

The square is transformed into a giant fairytale-like ice skating rink at Christmas. A massive 40-foot twinkling Christmas tree stands watch over the skaters. At night, the rink is illuminated in multicoloured lights, which create a magical atmosphere and highlight the architectural beauty of the building itself.

Mayfair

The upscale and elegant neighbourhood of Mayfair is known for its luxury boutiques, designer shops, art galleries, and high-end hotels. With so much extravagance throughout the year, you can expect nothing but the best from their Christmas lights and decorations.

Grosvenor Square

Grosvenor Square is one of London’s most prestigious garden squares. It transforms into a festive wonderland with a beautiful Christmas light installation during the Christmas season. The Square is adorned with 20,000 illuminated roses each year, forming a glowing carpet of flowers. Each flower can be purchased as a dedication to a lost loved one. All the money raised from these donations is then given to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Walking through the garden is a beautiful and sombre experience, especially at Christmas; it’s essential to think of those who might be missing someone special.

Annabel’s

Annabel’s is a private members club located inside a gorgeous Georgian mansion across from the historic Berkeley Square. The highly exclusive club was established in 1963 for wealthy members to privately gamble after partying. Everyone from the Queen herself to Olivia Newton-John and Lady Gaga has been deemed important enough to be allowed inside these hallowed gates.

And while you might never have the chance to enter the fairytale-like interior, all can enjoy their out-of-this-world Christmas decorations! Every year, they try to outdo themselves with bigger and better designs. Last year, the entire exterior was transformed into a magical carousel!

Piccadilly Street

From Annabel’s, walk south down to Piccadilly Street. Piccadilly is one of the most iconic streets in London, with a rich history dating back to the 17th century when it was a fashionable hub for London’s elite. At Christmas time, landmarks such as the Ritz Hotel enchant visitors with fantastical lighting displays.

Piccadilly Arcade

Walking east along Piccadilly, be sure to check out Piccadilly Arcade. Piccadilly Arcade is a beautiful neo-classical covered shopping arcade known for its exclusive boutique shops that offer a curated selection of high-end luxury goods. The arcade’s interior is decorated in blue and silver mirrored snowflakes, illuminating the architectural details throughout the arcade.

Burlington Arcade

Hop across the street and into another covered arcade, the Burlington Arcade. This covered shopping street was built in 1819 and featured incredible Regency-era architecture.

As this strip is home to many fine jewelry makers and bespoke tailors, they always decorate their interiors to entertain and amaze their high-end clients. Hanging from the glass roof is a series of giant disco balls and silver and gold baubles sparkling along the length of the arcade.

Bond Street

Just next door to Burlington Arcade is Bond Street. Bond Street is home to some of the most prestigious and expensive shops like Tiffany & Co, Sotheby’s and Bonhams. The Christmas installations along Bond Street are made to look larger-than-life! Framing the entire street, are these twinkling designs made to emulate peacock feathers.

The peacock feathers honour a group called the Bond Street Loungers, who, in 1820, became well-known for their fabulous fashions. They often wore expensive wigs and were seen strutting up and down Bond Street as if they owned it. They were also often called the “peacocks,” and the Christmas lights shine on to commemorate their daring fashions.

Above the intersections are these amazing crowns that incorporate those same peacock designs but so subtly that only those in the know will see them.

Many of the high-end shops on the street go ALL OUT. Cartier, Fenwick, Dior, Stellar McCartney and Ralph Lauren are just some of the incredible shops that spend thousands on decking out this exterior facade for the holidays. Despite being some of London’s most expensive shops, you don’t need to spend a dime to enjoy their beautiful lighting displays.

Regent Street

Make your way along Bond Street towards Brook Street, where you can turn east to Regent Street. Regent Street was designed in the early 19th century by the renowned architect John Nash to symbolize London’s grandeur and world-class urban planning. Regent Street was named after King George, the Prince Regent who reigned over England from 1820 to 1830. The sweeping curve of the street, the ornate facades, and the regal terraces make it a timeless icon of London’s magnificence.

The Regent Street lights are my favourite Christmas light installation. Soaring above the passersby are these giant “spirits” with sparkling wings. Many people refer to these as angels, but they are, in fact, officially called the spirits of Regent Street. 

The decorations were inspired by historic Christmas lights displayed initially on Regent Street that featured traditional angels playing trumpets. The illuminations were created with the input of the Crown since Regent Street is owned by the Royal Family, and they must approve everything. The spirits are made up of over 300,000 lights. Their golden 17-meter wingspan reaches across the entire length of the street. Watching over delighted shoppers. The lights glitter and flash, giving the effect of the fluttering wings. Almost as if they could simply take off at any moment.

Liberty of London

Quickly stop inside Liberty London, a luxury department store along historic Great Marlborough Street. The shop opened in 1875 and was immediately one of the most popular spots for high-end Christmas decorations. One of the iconic aspects of the store is the Tudor revival design of the building. Despite being a Tudo style, this was actually designed in 1920.

Every year, Liberty London unveils its festive Christmas window displays. The charming designs attract visitors from all over the city to gaze in awe at the delightful displays. Inside, the smell of balsam and eucalyptus fills the air with scents inspired by fragrant winter forests. Its enormous five-storey atrium is home to a fantastical paper Christmas tree with Christmas lights dangling from the ceiling. It’s a wonderful to behold.

Carnaby

Make your way out the back door of Liberty, where you find yourself immediately in the centre of the fantastical Carnaby Street Christmas Lights. Whereas Regent Street focuses on historical references, Carnaby Street aims to break away from tradition and draws you into a festive wonderland with unique and eye-catching decorations.Carnaby Street gets its name from ‘Karnaby House,’ a large and impressive mansion built here in 1683. The estate was so iconic that people began to refer to the area simply by that name.

Every year, the colourful streets of Carnaby explore a different theme that inspires their decorations. Everything from Rock and Roll to tropical carnivals and under-the-sea adventures. Last year, instead of creating something new, all the lights and designs from years past were collected to celebrate the history of Carnaby’s creative expression.

Kensington

Churchill Arms

Undoubtedly, the Churchill Arms is the most festive pub in the entire city. They put the rest of the city to shame with their incredible outdoor Christmas lights displays. The Churchill Arms is located in Kensington, just minutes from Kensington Palace. Kensington is one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in London. It is home to many international embassies and consulates and the residence of many politicians and billionaires. The pub dates back to 1750 and is named after Sir Winston Churchill, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945. The pub was even one of Churchill’s grandparent’s favourites when they lived there.

During the Christmas season, the pub is adorned with over 80 real Christmas trees literally hanging off the side of the building. It almost looks like something about Whoville. It requires over 130,000 lights to cover the exterior and takes over a month to install. While some might think it’s a bit tacky, I love how over-the-top they go with their designs. And I cannot wait to see how it gets more elaborate over the years.

Christmas at Kew Gardens

Located just outside central London, Kew Gardens is a vast botanic garden wonderland that comes alive as the sunsets over the city. While people might think of Kew Gardens as more of a spring and summer destination, winter brings an entirely different look and feel to the grounds. The gardens have been transformed with unbelievable Christmas lights and decorations for visitors to explore.

The magical winter lights trail leads visitors around projections, tunnels of light, dancing waterside reflections, and trees drenched in jewel-like lighting in all different colours. The entire experience ends at the famous Palm House, where you can enjoy a cup of mulled wine and mince-meat pies while watching their musical Christmas experience.

Although outside the inner city, you can get to Kew Gardens in under 35 minutes on the tube. The Christmas celebrations start in mid-November and last until the first week of January. Tickets cost £21.50 off-peak hours and £26.50 during peak hours. These tickets get sold out faster than you might expect, especially on weekends, so buying them well in advance is advised.

Old City of London

The Old City of London, often simply referred to as the “City of London,” is the historic and financial heart of the British capital. It’s a neighbourhood that is steeped in history and tradition. It is home to some of London’s most iconic historical landmarks, including the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Bank of England.

Paul’s Cathedral

St Paul’s Cathedral is one of London’s most recognizable and impressive buildings. Its iconic dome has dominated the skyline for over 300 years and can be seen throughout the city. Every year, inside and outside the church, a series of enormous Christmas trees are installed. Each one towering over 24 feet tall. This tradition dates back to George V. The trees are all sourced from Sandringham, the royal estate of His Majesty the King. While the tree is simple and plainly decorated, something about that warm glow in front of one of the most incredible architectural buildings brings a warm smile to my face.

Watling Street

On the way out of the Cathedral, you should make a point to walk down Watling Street to view the beautiful Christmas lights hanging along the street. Watling Street is one of the most historic routes in England. It was used in Classical Antiquity and throughout the Middle Ages as one of the main Roman roads in Britannia. Today, it’s home to several lively bars and restaurants, perfect for an evening nightcap.

Leadenhall Market

The holy grail of Victorian London can be found right here inside the Leadenhall Market. Leadenhall Market is a vast covered market located in the centre of the old city of London. The origins of the market date back to the 14th century, making it one of the oldest markets in London. The market is also famous for being one of the locations where the Harry Potter movies were filmed.

Leadenhall Market’s Christmas lights are so iconic that the Lord Mayor of London himself comes to switch them on! The Victorian theme is present in all the decorations, which seem to harken back to that era. Festive foliage lines the arcade. All decorations reflect Victorian styles with bows, paper ornaments, British flags and fabric-covered baubles. Underneath the theatrical arch, leading guests into the market is the giant Christmas tree, where you will frequently hear carol singers delighting the guests inside.

St. James

Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square is perhaps the most famous public square in London. It is in the centre of Westminster, just steps from many of the most iconic buildings in London. The square was built in the 19th century to honour the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. During this battle, the British navy captured a difficult victory against the Napoleonic off the coast of Cape Trafalgar. Nelson’s Column stands in the centre of the square. It towers over the rest of the courtyard at 169 feet tall and is guarded by four lion statues.

While the column is usually the tallest structure in the square, the colossal Christmas tree installed in the yard gives the column a run for its money. Since 1947, Norway has gifted the city of London with regal Norwegian spruce. The first tree was a gift to thank the British for their support during World War II. They decorate the tree in a simplistic Norwegian style, with only a few lights strung vertically yearly. It is erected 12 days before Christmas and remains in the square until 12 days after Christmas. Making the square even more festive is the fabulous Trafalgar Christmas Market. Over 20 stalls sell everything from Christmas ornaments, jewellery, hand-crafted goods and lots of sweets!

Jermyn St

Walk along Haymarket Street towards Jermyn Street. Jermyn Street is renowned for its longstanding tradition of fine tailoring and men’s fashion. It has been a destination for the discerning gentleman searching for impeccably tailored clothing, accessories, and grooming products for centuries. Along Jermyn Street, you’ll see different variations of the spirits that hang above Regent Street. But it is far less busy on Jermyn Street, so if you’re looking for a less chaotic wander, this is the street to walk along.

Fortnum & Mason

As you walk along Jermyn Street, you’ll go to the back entrance to Fortnum & Mason. Be sure to walk through the front to appreciate the amazing Christmas Lights display. Fortnum & Mason is my favourite department store in London! Why? Well, because I think it has the most innovative and magnificent packaging in the entire world. As a graphic designer, I always notice packaging right away. And I find everything inside their shop to be an absolute delight. 

Fortnum & Mason goes all out on their Christmas displays during the holidays. Their award-winning window displays bring smiles to everyone passing them. They transform the facade into a giant advent calendar, with each exterior window numbered from one to twenty-five, decorated with lush garlands and cheerful twinkle lights. As the month passes, the numbers are illuminated individually, like doors opening on a massive advent calendar.

St. James Street

Make your way down St. James’s Street, stopping in front of Lock & Co. Hatters and Berry Bros. & Rudd, who often have some of the best lighting displays on the exterior of these historic stores.

Pickering Place

Hidden away off of St. James Street is Pickering Place. Pickering Place is a small, cobbled courtyard surrounded by elegant Georgian townhouses. This picturesque courtyard is reminiscent of a bygone era, and at Christmas, they decorate it with a beautiful traditional outdoor Christmas tree and white Christmas lights.

Marylebone

Just south of Regent’s Park, in the city’s north end, you’ll find the charming borough of Marylebone. Marylebone Village is best known for its stunning light garlands swagged across the old brick streets. Everyone in this small neighbourhood village seems to participate in the Christmas celebrations. Decorating every street corner and shop window.

South Molton Street

To start your explorations of Marylebone’s Christmas Lights, make your way to South Molton Street. The street was built in the mid-18th century, and much of the area still retains the original Georgian homes built in the 1900s. At Christmas time, it hosts a series of astonishing illuminated arches. Their bright blue glow beckons you in from far beyond. The blue is so bright, in fact, that it casts a blue glow over the entire street.

Oxford Street

If you are looking for a place to shop, there is no better street than Oxford Street. In fact, it is Europe’s busiest shopping street, with around half a million daily visitors and over 300 shops! Look up and down the street to admire the over one million twinkling stars raining down onto the street. They are genuinely some of the most impressive sights in the city. And you can almost always spot a myriad of red double-decker buses, almost grazing the tops of the lights. This scene always makes for the most perfect photo op!

St Christopher’s Place

St Christopher’s Place is a tiny pedestrian alley just off Oxford Street. It somehow maintains the feeling of a tranquil oasis just astride one of the busiest parts of town. That small-town feel is amplified with window boxes filled with flowers in the springtime, wooden benches and friendly locals chatting in the main square. When Christmas comes to St. Christoper’s, lovely extra-large illuminated ornaments hang from above. Casting a rainbow glow down on the narrow stone walkways below.

Marylebone High Street

Continue north along St. Christophers Place, passing Widmore Street until you reach Marylebone High Street. Marylebone High Street is famous for its boutique shopping scene. It is lined with an array of upscale and independent shops catering to diverse tastes and preferences. Everyone seems to get into the Christmas spirit at Christmas with elaborate displays on every corner!

Chelsea, Knightsbridge and Belgravia

Chelsea, Knightsbridge and Belgravia are some of the most affluent areas of London, located south of Hyde Park. These streets are where you can find a refined and upscale ambiance, Victorian townhouses, grand mansion blocks, and impressive garden squares.

Harrods

Founded in 1834 by Charles Henry Harrod, Harrods Department store, located in Knightsbridge, is perhaps the most famous shopping mall in all of London! If not the most recognizable name for luxury, it is known worldwide. Harrods goes all out with its Christmas decorations. Every year, they go about transforming the exterior, as well as the interior, of the store into a fantastical winter wonderland. Last year, Christan Dior took over the light displays on the facade with giant starbursts that sparkled like the stars in the moonlight.

Inside, Harrods Christmas displays are known for their extravagance and attention to detail. While they might be far above your Christmas budget, wandering around the displays is a great way to get inspiration for your home and enjoy the stunning Christmas atmosphere.

Daphne’s

One of my favourite Christmas Lights displays is actually located inside one of my favourite restaurants. Daphne’s is located in the heart of Chelsea and is a local favourite for Italian cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. The decor changes slightly every year, but you can always expect Christmas lights and baubles hanging from the ceiling, like dining in a forest of Christmas decorations!

Pavilion Road

Pavilion Road is a charming street in Chelsea near the Royal Borough of Kensington. Despite being close to the main road, this street truly feels like escaping back in time. At Christmas time, when the twinkly lights are strung up along the roofs and carollers can be heard singing in the distance, it feels like you’re inside a Charles Dickens novel. The road features a series of artisan food shops perfect for grabbing special items for your Christmas table. The jovial neighbourhood atmosphere along this street is palpable, and one of the best-hidden gems in the city!

Sloane Square

Sloan Square is another favourite destination in Chelsea for Christmas lights. This square is much more peaceful than the adjacent Duke of York. Immense snowflake-shaped lights hang from the trees, making you feel tiny standing underneath. The seductive Venus fountain in the centre of the square makes for the perfect place to nab a photo of the twinkle lights falling all around you.

Duke of York Square

Just down the King’s Road is one of the best places to see the Christmas lights in Chelsea; the Duke of York Square and the King’s Road. The Duke of York Square features these incredible chandelier Christmas lights hanging from the trees. I love how this gives the appearance of being inside a high-class ballroom in the middle of London.

To the east of the square, King’s Road features this amazing crowned light above the roadway. The crown is intricately designed and is based on the crown worn by King Charles II. Be sure to carve out some time to stroll around the Chelsea Christmas shopping mall. All the stores in the area have created some incredible Christmas displays inside and outside their shops!

Elizabeth Street

Elizabeth Street is a charming and picturesque street in the upscale neighbourhood of Belgravia. It is known for its quaint, village-like atmosphere, boutique shops, and, during the Christmas season, its beautifully adorned decorations that transform the borough into a festive wonderland.

Above the road, Elizabeth Street is adorned with festive lights in the shape of gorgeous chandeliers that illuminate the passersby with a warm and welcoming glow. These lights create a magical atmosphere and make evening strolls especially enchanting.

Many shops and boutiques on Elizabeth Street participate in the holiday festivities by decorating their storefronts with Christmas wreaths, garlands, and twinkling lights.

Southbank & Southwark

The boroughs of Southbank and Southwark can be found on the south side of the River Thames. Southbank and Southwark offer stunning riverside promenades with picturesque views of London’s skyline.

Belvedere Road

Belvedere Road runs parallel to the eastern bank of the River Thames and has one of the most impressive views of the London Eyes framed on either side by Christmas light-wrapped trees. While the London Eye, for me, is an overrated tourist trap to pay to go inside, looking at in from below, all lit up in Christmas colours, is always an impressive sight!

Southbank Centre Winter Market

One of the most popular spots in Southbank is the pedestrianized embankment along the Thames called the Queen’s Walk. This exquisite promenade was created for the practical purpose of public drainage and preventing flooding. But it has been transformed into this gorgeous walking area with trees set alight during Christmas. Glittering garlands hang about, and the modern neon lights can be seen reflecting off the waters of the Thames.

But perhaps one of the biggest draws to the area is the Southbank Centre’s, Winter Market. The smell of mulled wine permeates the air as you walk amongst the wooden chalet selling Christmas food and decor. All set under the twinkling lights above.

Borough Market

Borough Market is one of London’s most famous and historic food markets. Located in the Southwark borough of London, near London Bridge, it is a bustling and vibrant marketplace that has been a hub for food and drink enthusiasts for centuries. Borough Market embraces the festive spirit during Christmas with charming decorations and seasonal delights flooding the entire market.

Strings of twinkling fairy lights create a warm and inviting atmosphere, especially in the evenings and the outdoor portion of the market is wrapped in giant red ribbons, making the entire place feel like a giant Christmas present wrapped just for you!

Hay’s Galleria

Hay’s Galleria is a massive warehouse complex on the river that was once used for storing and distributing tea along the Thames River. Today, the building has been transformed into a shopping and dining destination. At Christmas time, Hay’s Galleria is home to a lovely little market, but best of all, there is an enormous Christmas tree and a fantastical alpine cocktail bar.

Christmas by the River Market

Against the backdrop of some of London’s most iconic locations lies London Bridge City’s Christmas by the River. This holiday market is nestled along the water’s edge under the glowing lights of Tower Bridge. Winter cabins covered in fairy lights line the riverside. Each one sells hand-crafted items and delicious festive foods. In addition, the market also features these amazing, larger-than-life animals lit with Christmas lights that look out over the city of London.

London Neighbourhood Map

Westminster

The neighbourhood of Westminster is just opposite the Thames River, bordered by Green Park to the north and Vauxhall Bridge Road to the Southwest. The area was named after the great Westminster Abbey, the center of religious and political power at the time. Westminster’s architecture is a mix of styles from different periods, reflecting the area’s long and varied history. You’ll find primarily Victorian and Edwardian structures with many historic buildings that date back centuries. 

While many tourists come to Westminster, the neighbourhood is filled with local government workers. So there is a lively mix of tourists and locals alike. If you want to escape the tourist crush, avoid the Houses of Parliament. Instead, explore the southern part of the neighbourhood. Here, you’ll find a mixture of exceptional London residences. Surrounding these apartments are charming parks and incredible restaurants and cafes. A blend of modern cuisine and traditional British fare. 

What to See & Do in Westminster

Westminster is home to a plethora of amazing London sights and attractions. The Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, and the Jewel Tower surround the River Thames. You’ll find Churchill’s War Rooms, 10 Downing Street along Whitehall Road.

Beside this is the great Westminster Abbey.  The Abbey has been a site of worship for over 1,000 years. And inside, you can find the final resting places of many famed monarchs and notable figures from British history.

While Westminster isn’t the best neighbourhood for food, there are some real hidden gems. Yaatra is one of the best modern Indian restaurants in the city, serving up some inventive takes on classical dishes. The Laughing Halibut is where I always recommend people go for a traditional fish and chips. Inside, you’ll find a charmingly retro yet authentic interior. And if you’re a coffee and garden lover, you must check out Jens Jakobsen’s Onion Garden cafe.

St. James

Just north of the City of Westminster, sandwiched between Green Park, St. James Park and Trafalgar Square, is the micro neighbourhood of St. James. Despite being small, this gorgeous neighbourhood is home to some of London’s most iconic Royal landmarks. Walking around here, you feel like royalty yourself.

What to See & Do in St. James

St. James’s Palace, where the borough gets its name, is one of the British monarchy’s most important historic royal palaces. The Changing of the Guard ceremony, a popular tourist attraction, begins it’s route outside St. James Palace. The Changing of the Guard showcases the pomp and pageantry associated with the British monarchy.

Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is one of the most iconic and recognizable landmarks in the United Kingdom. It serves as the official residence and administrative headquarters of the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. Buckingham Palace’s history dates back to the early 18th century when it was originally constructed as a private townhouse known as Buckingham House for the Duke of Buckingham. Today, Buckingham Palace serves as a working royal residence and a symbol of the British monarchy. While tourists cannot enter the main residence, they can visit the State Rooms during the summer when the King is on holiday. The State Rooms offer a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the palace’s interior, featuring exquisite artwork, luxurious furnishings, and historical artifacts.

Nearby is the oasis of St. James’s Park. This beautiful public park has well-manicured gardens, a large lake, and views of several iconic landmarks.

Shopping & Dining in St. James

Jermyn Street was one of my favourite streets to window shop along when I lived nearby. This famous shopping street is known for its high-end fashion, vintage grooming salons, bespoke tailors and historic shops. These stores have served the elite of London high society, including the royals! Some of these shops have been here for over a hundred years. Even just browsing inside is like going back in time.

While St. James doesn’t have the largest selection of restaurants, it delights in historic pubs. The most famous is the Red Lion. Hidden along the picturesque Crown Passage, this pub has been open since the 17th century! Supposedly, it was a favourite of the royals as it’s only a stone’s throw from various royal residences. But it’s discreetly tucked away to avoid prying eyes.

Pimlico

Pimlico is an often overlooked neighbourhood in London but one of my favourite hidden gems. It is located just west of Westminster yet is still in central London. It’s a tranquil and charming area known for its colourful Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture, leafy squares, and quiet streets. Pimlico is bordered by the River Thames to the south, Vauxhall Bridge Road to the east, Belgravia to the north, and Chelsea to the west.

Despite being near some of the top sights, the neighbourhood, with its peaceful tree-lined streets, still maintains a small-town feel. Many residential homes in the area were built in the 19th century. They were made for wealthy families and feature elegant columns, intricate ironwork, and grand entrances.

What to See & Do in Pimlico

Most sights in Pimlico aren’t on the top of any London “must-see” lists, yet their authentic and intimate ambiance makes them true real hidden gems. My favourite local church to sit in and have a reflective moment was St. Gabriel’s Church. This grade II listed temple was built in 1850 by Thomas Cundy in one of Pimlico’s marshlands. The stone facade is always lush with ivy and greenery, making it feel like an oasis. Many people rave about the squares in Chelsea and Belgravia, but St. George’s Square in Pimlico is just as beautiful and the perfect place for a picnic in the summer. It’s far less crowded than the more popular square in the rest of the city.

While Pimlico might lack big-name attractions, it’s replete with restaurants, even in such a small area! The best place to get a full English breakfast inside a true retro diner is the Regency Cafe. A tried and true spot that has been serving the residents of Pimlico for over 50 years. It’s inexpensive and authentic, and the owner is such a character. For more upscale yet relaxed dining, walk along Wilton Road, where you can find everything from modern British cuisine to top-class Turkish cuisine and charming pubs!

Belgravia

To the west of Westminster is the affluent and fashionable neighbourhood of Belgravia. The area of Belgravia was developed in the early 19th century by the Grosvenor family, who owned the surrounding estates. During this period, it drew in many wealthy families who built elegant, white townhouses featuring ornate balconies, Roman-inspired columns, and fabulous garden terraces. The houses all face several lush garden squares, including Belgrave Square, Eaton Square, and Chester Square. Each of these is a fabulous place to visit for a picnic if you want a peaceful outdoor spot to relax.

Boutiques, high-end department stores, and Michelin-starred restaurants all seem to congregate around here. This isn’t the spot to come if you’re on a budget. But it is a fantastic spot for awe-inspiring eating, wandering the Georgian and Victorian architecture, and window shopping. Since it is such an affluent neighbourhood, Belgravia is considered one of the safest places to stay in London, great for solo female travellers. But, obviously, it isn’t the cheapest.

What to See & Do in Belgravia

Elizabeth Street is the street to explore when visiting Belgravia. This enchanting street is lined with boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants. You’ll find everything from designer clothing to artisanal chocolates here. Tomtom Coffee House is my favourite place to grab a drink and people-watch. Their spot right on the corner, outside their adorable shop front, makes for such a cozy stop to relax during your no doubt busy London travels. If you plan on doing any cooking or are just looking to experience a truly one-of-a-kind foodie haven, check out Bayley & Sage grocers across the street. This store highlights incredible gourmet produce from all over the UK and is where you should sample some of the country’s best cheese and specialty meats.

If you stop into Barley & Sage, grab a few items for a picnic and head over to Eaton Square Gardens. The garden is surrounded by stately Georgian and Victorian buildings, many of which are now occupied by embassies and high-end residential properties. The garden was originally laid out in the early 19th century, designed by a renowned architect and builder, Thomas Cubitt. In the center is a large oval lawn surrounded by trees, flowerbeds, and shrubs. Several winding paths lead through the garden, providing visitors with plenty of opportunities to explore and sit on the various benches to enjoy a quiet spot in the middle of the city!

Chelsea

Just southwest of Belgravia is the trendy neighbourhood of Chelsea. In the 18th century, Chelsea quickly became one of the hotspots in London for the upper classes to build fashionable residences. And today, Chelsea is still one of the most fabulous areas to simply walk around and admire these incredible architectural masterpieces. The neighbourhood is home to many stunning Georgian and Victorian buildings, now protected as heritage sites. 

But what many people think of when they think of Chelsea is the shopping. Chelsea is also known for its lively retail scene, with many high-end shops, boutiques, and galleries lining the streets. The King’s Road, in particular, is a popular shopping destination, with a range of designer stores, independent boutiques, and trendy cafes.

What to See & Do in Chelsea

My favourite place to come to in Chelsea is Pavillion Road. This amazing pedestrianized street is home to sweet food shops and quirky boutiques. The perfect place to relax and enjoy a coffee or tea under the buntings that stretch along the roadway.

The old Royal Hospital Chelsea is on the south edge of Chelsea, along the banks of the Thames River. This historic building is home to the famous Chelsea Pensioners, revered retired soldiers. One of the most popular events held inside the hospital is the Chelsea Flower Show. The Chelsea Flower Show is one of the most prestigious flower shows in the world. Attracting visitors from all over the globe. The show is held in late May or early June. It aims to showcase various garden designs and horticultural displays from some of the industry’s top garden designers and landscapers.

Knightsbridge

Knightsbridge is one of the smallest neighbourhoods in London. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in sheer grandeur. We’ve heard this name before, but we really do have architect Thomas Cubitt to thank for transforming what was once a simple rural hamlet into this upper-class residential area. Cubitt had made a name for himself with his work in Belgravia, and his talents were once again employed to build what would become one of the world’s most iconic department stores: Harrods. And to support such an extravagant building, the houses around it needed to be just as lavish. Some of the most impressive Victorian townhouses can be found exploring the side streets off Knightsbridge Road. 

One of the most impressive buildings in Knightsbridge is the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel. Just walking by, your eyes will go up and up to take in all the glory of this majestic structure. The hotel was built in the late 19th century, originally a residence, but it was recently converted into a hotel. It costs a pretty penny to stay here, and as such, the hotel has been where so many famous guests have visited over the years. This includes everyone from Winston Churchill to the Rolling Stones. 

What to See & Do

As mentioned, Knightsbridge is also known for its luxury retail. All along Knightsbridge Road, you can find high-end boutiques, designer stores, and department stores like Harvey Nichols. But what everyone comes to Knightsbridge to see is Harrods. Harrods is perhaps the most famous department store in the world, offering an unparalleled selection of luxury goods, from fashion and accessories. In addition to this, they are renowned for their amazing gourmet food hall. While Harrods is perhaps one of the most expensive shopping experiences in London, their food hall manages to be pricey, yet you can still find reasonably priced for the quality. And the food here is truly spectacular and worth a little splurge.

If you prefer something less formal, I always recommend walking around the Knightsbridge Mews’. A mews is a narrow, cobbled street or alleyway in London, often lined with two-storey houses. These were originally the stables where wealthy residents kept their horses and carriage. But today, these structures have been converted into unique homes with some of the most darling and picture exteriors. Since these mews are too narrow for cars, they are pedestrian-only lanes, ensuring they are a peaceful and quiet retreat from the bedlam that is on the high street.

South Kensington

The Royal Borough of Kensington is replete with elegant Victorian architecture, leafy parks and world-renowned museums. It is located west of the city centre, and while it is home to these big-name attractions, it is mainly a luxury residential neighbourhood. Meaning you’ll find this part of town is such a peaceful and quiet place to explore. Many old, historic townhomes have been transformed into trendy hotels. And staying here gives you the feeling of living inside a piece of London’s history. 

The neighbourhood has been home to many famous artists, writers, and politicians over the years, including T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Winston Churchill and Sir Alfred Hitchcock. Their homes are marked with official blue plaques. I find that Kensington is where you seem to find the most dense collection of these blue plaques. You can barely a few blocks without hitting at least a few blue plaques!

What to See & Do in Kensington

I think Kensington is one of the best places to stay if you’re travelling with kids. You are steps from so many different museums and splendid parks in one neighbourhood. Perfect for entertaining kids and adults alike! Just off Cromwell Road is the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Science Museum of London. For art and architecture lovers, you need to head to Kensington High street, where you’ll find the Design Museum and the Leighton House and Sambourne Houses.

For any royalist, a visit to Kensington Palace is sure to please! This historic royal palace was once the residence of Princess Diana and is now a museum open to the public. Kensington Palace borders the great Hyde Park and adjoining Kensington Gardens. These large public parks are the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city. The park has many attractions, including the Serpentine Lake, the Diana Memorial Fountain, and the Albert Memorial. If you’re a music lover, Kensington is where you’ll find the fantastical Royal Albert Hall. It is one of London’s most famous concert venues, hosting many of the world’s most famous musicians and performers. Check their schedule in advance to see what’s playing when you’re in town. There is nothing like experiencing a show inside, so it’s well worth checking out if you have the time.

Notting Hill

Perhaps most famous for the film of the same name, Notting Hill is a charming neighbourhood in west London. Although it’s not super centrally located, this tucked-away borough makes up for that with a dazzling array of pastel-hued, quirky architecture, which has become an iconic part of the area.

In the 1980s and 90s, the area became associated with the “Cool Britannia” movement. During this time, British culture and iconography saw a huge resurgence worldwide, influenced by Britpop acts like the Spice Girls, Blur, and Oasis. The Union Jack became a fashion statement, and the iconic style from London’s Swinging 60s was suddenly all the rage. During this era, the film Notting Hill was released, cementing the neighbourhood in people’s minds as a spot for quirky bookshop owners, artists, musicians, and designers.

What to See & Do in Notting Hill

Notting Hill is home to the world-famous Portobello Road Market, which features a wide range of antiques, vintage clothing, and artisanal foods. The quiet streets come alive on Saturdays, but there is always something for sale in the market throughout the week.

Also hidden in Notting Hill is one of my favourite alternative museums, the Museum of Brands. This quirky museum displays a wonderful collection of historical branding and packaging that tracks the trajectory of advertising throughout Britain’s history. If you are staying in the area, make sure you come on an empty stomach to check out spots like the Cheeky Scone, and the vibrant Sun In Splendour pub, which serves up one of my favourite Sunday Roasts.

Marylebone

This upscale neighbourhood of Marylebone is a great option for first-time travellers to London who want to be close to the action without feeling like they’re in Times Square. The neighbourhood’s name comes from the old parish of St. Mary, which sat beside the river Tyburn. Mary-le-Bow, or “bourne,” meant St. Mary’s on the river. Although the river is now under your feet, its original pathway carved out the grid for the streets above. So if you notice some odd twists and turns of roads, you know you are following the old river.

Marylebone borders Regent’s Park to the north and busy Oxford Street to the south. But instead of feeling overwhelmingly full of tourists, it instead manages to walk a fine line between iconic sights and quiet, charming houses. The streets are decorated with charming Georgian architecture.

What to See & Do in Marylebone

Marylebone is where you can find my favourite museum in the city, the Wallace Collection. The Wallace Collection is a museum that houses an impressive collection of fine and decorative arts, including paintings, furniture, and armour. The museum is located in a stunning Georgian townhouse, and the collection once belonged to this family. As such, it feels like such a personal and intimate experience.

Another museum in Marylebone which is worth a visit if you’re a fan of London’s most famous fictional detective is the Sherlock Holmes Museum. The museum is located in a townhouse that has been restored to look exactly as it did in the Victorian era and features a collection of Sherlock Holmes memorabilia. While obviously Sherlock never lived here as he wasn’t real, this museum makes you feel like you are stepping into the novel’s setting, and it’s a great way to imagine London in the Victorian era.

Just across from the Marylebone main street is the great oasis that is Regent’s Park. Regent’s Park spans over 410 acres and includes several attractions, including the London Zoo, a boating lake, and several gardens. It’s a great place to take a walk or have a picnic. Marylebone High Street is a captivating street filled with boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants. It’s a great place to shop, have a coffee or enjoy a meal. My favourite stops along the street are Daunt Books, Chiltern Firehouse, Perfumer H and Boxcar Baker & Deli.

Mayfair

Tucked between Green Park and Hyde Park is Mayfair‘s luxurious and affluent neighbourhood. The iconic Picadilly Street begins on the western edge of Mayfair, just opposite the famous Wellington Arch. Walking through Mayfair, you pass by iconic buildings like the Ritz, Claridge’s, Grosvenor Hotel, and a series of fantastic historic shopping arcades. Mayfair is the place to come for luxury shopping. This neighbourhood is home to several famous shopping streets, including Bond Street and Savile Row, renowned for their high-end fashion boutiques and bespoke tailors.

This neighbourhood is dripping in luxury and features some of the most opulent buildings made by such renowned architects as Robert Adam, John Nash, and William Kent. The architecture is primarily Georgian and Victorian, with a mix of styles that include Palladian, Neoclassical, and Art Deco. One of the most famous landmarks in the area is the 18th-century Hanover Square, which was once the center of social life for London’s upper classes. The square features several Georgian townhouses and a statue of William Pitt the Elder, a famous British statesman.

What to See and Do in Mayfair

But for me, the best place to come to shop in Mayfair is Fortnum and Mason. This prestigious department store was founded in 1707 by William Fortnum and Hugh Mason. They made their fortune selling used wax that was being wasted in the royal households. And today, they are one of the world’s most iconic and prestigious retailers. Fortnum and Mason specialize in high-quality British food and drink, particularly tea and biscuits. The store has an extensive range of teas, including its famous Royal Blend, created exclusively for King Edward VII in 1902. The store also has an extensive selection of jams, preserves, and other gourmet food items.

For a splurge, you should see if you can nab a reservation at Claridge’s for their sumptuous afternoon tea. Claridge’s is a luxury hotel that has been serving afternoon tea for over 150 years. Inside their elegant and stylish Art Deco-inspired foyer, you can enjoy a languid afternoon sipping tea with finely cut sandwiches, freshly baked scones and a range of delicate pastries and cakes. 

Museums of Mayfair

If you’re looking for a spot of culture, head to the Royal Academy of Arts. This is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious art institutions. It was founded in 1768 by King George III, and its mission is to promote the creation, appreciation, and understanding of art and architecture. The gallery features a collection of over 50,000 works of art, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints dating from the 18th century to the present day. The collection includes works by some of the most important British artists, such as J.M.W. Turner, John Constable, and Joshua Reynolds, as well as international artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.

Another unique museum that is often overlooked is the Handel & Hendrix Museum. The Handel & Hendrix Museum celebrates the lives and works of two of the greatest musicians that might have never thought of being paired together, George Frideric Handel and Jimi Hendrix. Aside from being prolific musicians, what do these two have in common? Well, it’s, in fact, the very building the museum is housed inside. Handel lived here in the 18th century, and where Hendrix lived in the late 1960s. The museum contains a collection of artifacts and memorabilia related to both musicians, including original manuscripts, instruments, costumes, and personal items. The museum provides a rare insight into their lives and works and is a must-visit for music lovers and history enthusiasts.

Soho

London’s Soho neighbourhood is pretty much the Times Square of the UK. It is stuffed to the brim with inauthentic shops and restaurants, most geared towards appealing to American travellers. You’ll find M&M World, the Lego store, Angus Steakhouse, TGI Fridays and, the mark of any tourist trap area, the Hard Rock Cafe. There is no doubt that Soho is lively; it is usually packed to the gills with tourists and pickpockets. In the 19th century, Soho was a pretty sketchy area known for its brothels and music halls. And the area is still one of the most popular spots for bachelor parties and hen dos. 

What most people come to Soho for are the theatres! Shaftesbury Avenue is a major thoroughfare in Soho. Lining the streets are dozens of playhouses, making it the center of London’s theatre district. Some of the most famous theatres in the area include the Apollo Theatre, the Lyric Theatre, Sondheim Theatre and the Palace Theatre. These theatres have hosted countless productions over the years. This includes some of the most famous plays and musicals of all time. If you’re willing to brave the crowds in Leicester Square, head to the TKTS booth. Here, you can buy discounted theatre tickets for almost all the shows that didn’t sell out in the West End. It’s a great way to nab cheap tickets to fantastic shows. As long as you aren’t picky about what you want to see.

What to See and Do in Soho

Ok, so you might have noticed I don’t have the best opinion of Soho, and truthfully, I try to avoid the area as much as possible. But a few gems around here are worth slogging through the crowds to find. The first is London’s Chinatown. Almost all the restaurants in Soho are chain restaurants, so walking into the red lantern-laden streets of Chinatown, filled with such delicious aromas, is a welcome change.

In the 19th century, because Soho had a seedy reputation, the cost of rent here was low. This made it a popular spot for immigrants. And the first Chinese immigrants arrived here when they settled in London. Despite Chinatown being one of the most heavily bombed areas of the city during WWII, their community never stopped thriving and growing. Today, you can find so many delicious restaurants here that are worth your time and money! The ice cream at Chin Chin Dessert Club is one of those hotspots that’s worth the wait.

Dining & Shopping

Another one of my favourite hidden gems in Soho is Kingly Court. The area was built in the 18th century as a series of townhouses, but it was later converted into a warehouse for clothing and textiles. In the 20th century, the building was used as a warehouse for the music industry, and it was even home to a famous recording studio. Today, the building has been transformed into a trendy three-story courtyard featuring an indoor/outdoor food hall. Whether you’re looking for a quick coffee or a leisurely meal, there is something for every taste and budget.

While many of the shops in Soho are pretty touristy, if you’re looking for a gorgeous shopping experience in a wonderfully British store, you need to make a trip to Liberty London. Liberty is a luxury department store founded in 1875. Unlike the modern glass department stores along Oxford Street, Liberty is set inside an iconic Tudor-style building. The epitome of British historic style. It is a staple shopping mall where you can find independent designers and brands from all around the UK.

Covent Garden

Many people might think Covent Garden is only the covered market of the same name. But the neighbourhood of Covent Garden actually covers the entire area stretching from Charing Cross Road to the west and Drury Lane to the east. It is bordered on the north and south by the amazingly colourful Seven Dials and historic Strand, respectively.

The name is derived from the fact the land where once was the Convent gardens of St. Peter Church. Founded all the way back in the 7th century. In 1654, after the Reformation and the dissolution of many of the monasteries in London, the area was converted into a small open-air fruit-and-vegetable market. 

One historic street that feels like a picture of history frozen in time is along Floral Street. This charming pedestrian street takes its name from the flower market that operated in the 19th century. The old cobblestone pathways are lined on either side by stunning Georgian and Victorian buildings. Narrow brick facades with intricate details like decorative cornices, pilasters, and pediments feel like scenes from a Dickensian tale.

One of the highlights of Floral Street is the beautiful floral displays that can be seen throughout the year. Many of the shops and restaurants on the street have elaborate window displays featuring fresh flowers and plants. Adding to the street’s vibrant and colourful atmosphere.

What to See & Do in Covent Garden

As mentioned, the biggest attraction in the Covent Garden area is the Covent Garden covered market. This market dates back to the 17th century and is today home to a wide range of vendors selling everything from handmade crafts to fresh produce. 

If you’re a book lover, one place you need to check out is Cecil Court. This one-block-long, pedestrian-only street in the heart of London’s West End is known for its unique blend of antique shops, bookstores, and galleries. Most people call this street by its nickname, “Book Row,” due to the many independent bookstores that line the street. To me, it feels like shopping in a bygone era, with both the architecture on the street and the books in the store. It harkens back to the old world and historic London.

Theatre & Museums

If Opera and Ballet are your thing, then a trip to the Royal Opera House is in order. This stunning building has been a hub for the arts in London since the 18th century. Visitors can take a guided tour of the building even if they don’t want to see a show but are dying to visit the sumptuous interiors. The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet have called this venue home for years, and there is always something really special about seeing a show here.

If you have kids or are a train spotter, a trip to the London Transport Museum is in order. The museum is housed in a historic Victorian flower market building, which has been converted to display the museum’s vast collection. You can get right up close to a wide range of historic vehicles used by London’s public transport system. This includes buses, trams, and underground trains, as well as bicycles, taxis, and other forms of transportation. Visitors can explore the different vehicles on display and even climb aboard a vintage bus. It’s a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the history of transportation or engineering.

Seven Dials

But for me, the best area to explore is Neal’s Yard and the Seven Dials district. Neal’s Yard is a small alleyway which leads into a darling courtyard famous for the colourful and eclectic mix of buildings, bright murals and joyful flower boxes hanging off the walls.

Just to the north of Neal’s Yard is the bustling Seven Dials historic junction. The striking column adorned with sundials marks the spot where seven of the most important streets in London once converged. Making this spot the veritable beating heart of London. While the area certainly has a sordid history, today, it’s bursting with excitement!

Fitzrovia & Bloomsbury

Above Covent Garden are the neighbourhoods of Fitzrovia and Bloomsbury. While they are technically different boroughs, so many areas overlap so small it’s easy to pair them together. The neighbourhood is bordered by Euston Road to the north and Oxford Street to the south. Although a small neighbourhood, the area has a rich literary history. Fitzrovia gets its name from Charles FitzRoy. FitzRoy was the land owner in the area, purchased a large manor, and built the iconic Fitzroy Square. Fitzroy Square is the most distinguished of the original buildings in the district. It was designed in part by famed architect Robert Adam. Bloomsbury‘s collection of academic and medical institutions, bookshops and cafes makes for a busy crowd of locals, students and tourists. Elegant Georgian townhouses line leafy Russell and Bedford squares.

What to See & Do in Fitzrovia & Bloomsbury

The Fitzroy Tavern was a popular public ale house on the corner of Charlotte Street, also named for Charles FitzRoy. The pub became popular in the 1920s for London’s artists, intellectuals and bohemians such as Jacob Epstein, Nina Hamnett, Dylan Thomas, Augustus John, and George Orwell. Today, you can still visit the very same tavern and sit in the spots where these men of history once sat.

One of my favourite hidden gems of Fitzrovia is the old All Saints Church. This beautiful Anglican church was built in the 1850s by architect William White. It is considered one of the city’s finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture. Although small in size, the details in the interior are absolutely mind-blowing. Almost every surface is decorated in patterns or ornamentation. The floor is patterned in tiles, mosaics cover the walls, friezes are painted on the ceiling and walls, and even the timber around the altar is fantastically decorated.

Bloomsbury is home to one of the most popular bakeries in the city, Fortitude Bakehouse. Walking by, if it wasn’t for the line out the door, you might almost miss this unassuming shop hidden behind the blue wooden doorway. You’ll find the most intoxicating aromas of freshly baked bread overwhelm your senses. They might speicilize in sourdough bread, but my favourite morning treats are their light and fluffy morning buns filled with mountains of fresh cream. And for something savoury, you can’t get any more British than a sausage roll! And theirs is one of the best in the city.

Museums and Exhibitions

One of the main attractions in Bloomsbury is the British Museum, one of the world’s most famous and prestigious museums. While their ownership is a point of contention, the museum features a collection of artifacts and treasures from all around the globe. The most important pieces from their collection include the Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles, and the ancient Egyptian mummies.

On the edge of Bloomsbury, you can visit the great British Library. Located just a few steps from the busy St Pancras Station. It is the largest library in the world, with a collection of over 170 million items! This includes books, manuscripts, maps, newspapers, magazines, prints, and drawings. But for tourists, one of the main attractions inside the library is the exhibition space. This space displays the most important cultural artifacts from their collection. Important literary and historical documents such as the Magna Carta, the Gutenberg Bible, and the original manuscripts of works by William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and Charles Dickens all can be seen up close and personal inside the library. Free of charge!

Holborn

Holborn is a historic neighbourhood on the cusp of the Old City of London. As such, many parts of the neighbourhood can be traced as far back as the Roman era and the city of Roman Londinium. Holborn is bordered broadly by South Hampton Row towards Farrington Street and from the Strand north towards Guildford Street. The area became a busy centre of trade during the medieval era when a number of important guilds and trade associations set up their marketplace in Holborn.

In the 19th century, a new kind of trade took up residence in this neighbourhood. And that was the legal profession. Early in the history of London, the law was only taught to the Clergy in the official “City of London.” But in the 13th century, a papal bill went into place that banned the clergy from teaching common law. Henry III followed this up with his degree that no legal education institutes could exist inside the City of London. All the barristers needed to set up shop elsewhere. So they moved their offices, courts and even residences into the nearby hamlet of Holborn.

Lincoln’s Inn, one of the four Inns of Court that regulate the legal profession in England and Wales, was one of the first institutions built in the area. Today, some of the first buildings dating back to the 15th century still remain. A year later, the great cathedral of law, the Royal Courts of London, was built just on the edge of Holborn.

What to See and Do in Holborn

At the very heart of the neighbourhood is Lincoln’s Inn Fields. Lincoln’s Inn Fields is an 11-acre public park featuring relaxing walking paths and a large open lawn surrounded by several notable statues and monuments. The Lincoln’s Inn Society is located adjacent to Lincoln’s Inn Fields and includes several notable buildings, including the Great Hall and the Chapel, which date back to the 15th century.

Also directly across from the park is Sir John Soane’s Museum. Sir John Soane’s Museum is a historic house museum dedicated to the work and collections of the influential British architect Sir John Soane. Before the home was a public museum, it was, in fact, Soane’s home and office. Inside you’ll find a wide variety of objects, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, architectural models, and antiquities from ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Soane was a collector of art and artifacts, and his collection reflects his eclectic interests and varied tastes.

The Royal Courts of Justice is an impressive Gothic Revival-style building designed by George Edmund Street in 1882. It serves as the High Court and the Court of Appeal for England and Wales. Anyone from the public can enter and explore the building. And you can even sit in on many of the various court cases inside. This primarily includes civil, criminal, and family law. There are over 90 different courtrooms throughout the building and the fantastical grand central hall. Make sure to stop here to study the ornate archways and intricate detailing.

Charles Dickens London

Holborn was also home to famed British writer Charles Dickens. Today, just like the John Soane museum, the house has been preserved as it was when Dicken lived in the home and opened as a museum for the public. The old Georgian townhouse at 48 Doughty Street is one of the most intimate ways to get inside the head of the writers of such works as “Oliver Twist,” “Nicholas Nickleby,” and “The Pickwick Papers” as they were each written right here inside the house.

The Old Curiosity Shop is a building that dates back to the 16th century. It was originally a tavern called the Queen’s Head and later became a shop that sold antiques and curiosities. Over the years, it has been home to a variety of businesses, including a hat shop, a dairy, and a pet store. But what made this place famous is that this shop was the inspiration for one of Charles Dicken’s novels, “The Old Curiosity Shop,” published in 1840. Recently the shop was purchased by the City of Westminster, and a restoration project began to install a new roof and ensure the building is kept in working order for years to come. The project was expected to be finished in Winter 2023.

The City of London

In the centre of London, you’ll find an area called, perhaps confusingly enough, the City of London. Also known as the Square Mile, this small but mighty part of town is now considered the city’s financial and business center. Modern skyscrapers hide in plain sight the parts of London that date back to the Roman era when it was founded as Londinium. These Roman ruins are such a peak into the earliest beginnings of the creation of what is now one of the most important cities in the world.

The City of London neighbourhood was devastated by the Great Fire of London in 1666. Despite efforts to contain the fire, it burned for several days. Eventually consuming over 13,000 homes, 87 churches, and many other public buildings. But from the ashes of the fire rose new constructions. Some of the most famous landmarks, including St. Paul’s Cathedral, Mansion House, the Guildhall, the Bank of England and the Monument. Today, you can visit the Monument to the Great Fire of London, a 202-foot-tall column, built to commemorate stories from the great fire.

What to See & Do in the City of London

For first-time visitors, the old City of London is a hub of interest with many historical buildings. One of the oldest landmarks standing on the edge of the City of London is the Tower of London. This historic castle, located on the north bank of the River Thames, was built in the 11th century and has served as a royal palace, a prison, and a fortress. Upon entering, visitors can explore all the Royal bed chambers, the infamous dungeon, the Royal Chapel and the sparkling collection of the Crown Jewels.

Just across from the Tower of London stands the ever-photographed Tower Bridge. This iconic bridge is one of the most recognizable landmarks in London and is a must-see for anyone visiting the city. Visitors can walk across the bridge and enjoy stunning views of the River Thames and the surrounding area.

One of the most important buildings in the city is the enormous St. Paul’s Cathedral. This stunning temple was designed in 1675 by famed architect Sir Christopher Wren, responsible for the architectural appearance of much of the city of London. The building has a rich history and has been the site of many important events, including the funerals of Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher.

Leadenhall Market

If you’re looking for somewhere interesting to grab a bite to eat, head over to Leadenhall Market. The market is situated within a Victorian-era building that dates back to the 14th. It’s adorned with ornate wrought iron and glasswork ceilings delicately painted in bright colours and intricate designs. Dining here feels like stepping into a bygone era. Inside, there is a host of restaurants, pubs, and food stalls serving everything from traditional British cuisine to international dishes. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty pie, a gourmet burger, or a taste of global flavours, you’ll find plenty of options to satisfy your cravings.

Spitalfields and Shoreditch

Too often overlooked, Spitalfields and Shoreditch are my second favourite areas in London. This trendy and vibrant neighbourhood is located in the East End of London and is hipster central. Everywhere you look, there is street art decorating the alleys and storefronts. It feels like living inside an outdoor art gallery. East London was historically where the poorer class of Londoners lived, meaning it was a hub for bohemian artists creating this passionate atmosphere for art everywhere you look. You’ll find fabulous vintage boutiques, artisanal coffee, trendy restaurants and delicious street food! 

What to See & Do in Whitechapel & Spitalfields

You can uncover historical landmarks by heading into the neighbourhood of Whitechapel and Spitalfields to the south. This includes the Christ Church Spitalfields, a Georgian-style church, and the Old Spitalfields Market, a covered market dating back to the 17th century. Whitechapel was home to the infamous Jack the Ripper killings. Walking these streets, you’ll find many have barely changed since 1888, and you truly do feel like you have stepped back in time, keeping your eye open for hidden secrets Jack might have left behind…

South Bank & Southwark

South Bank and Southwark is an often overlooked part of town for tourists, located on the south side of the Thames River. But sitting on the south side of the River means you are just a bridge across from the most popular tourist sites, and you get this stunning view of the iconic London skyline every time you wake up! I love the Southbank for its more relaxed atmosphere. It feels like there is just a different type of energy on this side of the city. 

What to See & Do in South Bank & Southwark

The heart of the action has to be the famous Borough Market. A market has stood on this side of London Bridge since medieval times, and today, it is a lively marketplace where you can find some of the best street food in the entire city. The neighbourhood is also home to Tate Modern, Southwark Cathedral, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and Hay’s Galleria shopping mall.

Exploring London’s different boroughs, from the timeless allure of Kensington to the bustling streets of Shoreditch and the regal grandeur of Westminster, is one of the best ways to dive into this amazing city’s rich history and diverse culture! Every street corner, every market stall, every park bench holds a story, and it’s up to you to uncover them. I hope this guide helps you narrow down where you might want to stay on your next visit to this unforgettable city.
