Start Your Day with a Warm Cup of Coffee or Tea

On a rainy day, there’s nothing quite like a hot cup of coffee or tea to start your day. And in London, there is no shortage of cozy cafes where you can curl up with a warming breakfast. I also have an entire post dedicated to my favourite cozy coffee shops if none of these catch your fancy!

Classic: Café in the Crypt

Just off the iconic Trafalgar Square stands the old St Martin-in-the-Fields church. Trafalgar Square is smack dab in the centre of the tourist hubbub of London. But amongst the tourist traps and overpriced nonsense around here, Café in the Crypt is a true hidden gem. I mean, really, it’s actually hidden underground. Find the glass stairwell just side the church entrance leading to the crypt. Don’t worry; there are lots of signs to guide you inside.

Café in the Crypt is exactly like it sounds, a little coffee shop set up inside the ancient crypts of St Martin-in-the-Fields church. Although you might expect a hundred-year-old crypt to feel dark and eerie, the atmosphere down here is joyful. And it has a great community-type energy. It doesn’t get more classical than sipping your morning tea inside an old, architectural masterpiece. Even in the rain, down here, you won’t notice a difference.

Artsy: The Attendant

In the centre of Fitzrovia is an old iron gate. Behind it you’ll spot a stairwell leading you down into one of the best-hidden gems in London. Down below the surface, you are led into a stunning slice of history inside the Attendant Cafe. This quaint coffee shop is housed inside a former Victorian public restroom. Yes, you heard that right! This cafe serves up great coffee and delicious brunch options, all inside a beautifully restored Victorian interior. Enjoying your morning brew here, surrounded by the fantastical historical furnishings, is such a special way to start your day. Another hidden away locations that doesn’t care about the rain.

Alternative: Artisan Coffee

For an alternative coffee shop, you can’t beat the streets around Brick Lane, where you’ll find Artisan Coffee. A charming cafe nestled just off the main street, which serves a robust cappuccino and offer a variety of fresh pastries. The cafe is brightly lit, yet it retains a warm, inviting atmosphere, far from sterile or minimalist, and perfect to snuggle up inside on a rainy day. Wooden accents and green plants adorn the area, enhancing its coziness. There’s ample seating, and the vibe is very relaxed, with everyone around seeming very laid-back.

For the Kids: The Muffin Man Tea Shop

Ok, now, while this shop isn’t located on Drury Lane, but when I found out there was a cafe in London named the ‘Muffin Man,’ I knew I had to check this place out! Named after the children’s nursery rhyme of the same name, the Muffin Man Tea Shop is a charming and cozy little spot. Perfect for hiding away from the rain. The interior is decorated with a traditional English charm. Featuring quaint wooden tables and chairs, delicate lace curtains, and vintage tea sets.

The menu is classic English breakfast food. It’s not fussy or fancy, perfect for the kids. Their Muffin Man pancakes with banana, blueberries, and cinnamon are amazing and a great option to share as well. As it’s only breakfast and not quiet time for afternoon tea, if you want to try something similar with your kids, go for the Muffin Man Tea set. This comes with a toasted teacake, a slice of cake and a pot of tea. And add a side of Devonshire cream to make it a ‘cream tea’ morning treat! Especially if you have kids who love to play tea time with their dolls, this is such an adorable place to take them for the real thing! But in a laid-back setting, you won’t feel like they’re out of place.

Explore London’s Best Museums

After loading up on a filling breakfast, if the rain is still pounding the ground outside, it’s time to escape to one of the city’s most amazing museums. London is known for its world-class museums. From art to history to science, there’s something for everyone. Here are a few of our favourite museums to explore.

Classic: The National Gallery

If you’re taking our classic tour, jump across to Trafalgar Square and into one of the best museums in the city, The National Gallery. This tour-de-force of a collection is FREE to explore. Inside are some of the most stunningly decorated neoclassical galleries to admire in addition to the actual art. Over 2,300 masterpieces from European artists such as Van Gogh, Botticelli, Turner and da Vinci line the walls. You’ll be able to see up close and in person painting you’ve more than likely encountered countless times in books or online. But nothing compares to walking up to them in real life and seeing the brushstrokes come to life before you. Paintings like the Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck, Rembrandt‘s Belshazzar’s Feast, the Ugly Duchess and Van Gogh‘s Sunflowers will take your breath away. 

I always advise people not to get overwhelmed by the sheer size of the collection. Take a highlights tour, or simply just one painting in each gallery to explore in more detail. Choose something you’re really drawn to and feel a connection with. This way, you’ll be much more likely to have a meaningful visit. Rather than trying to digest over 2,000 paintings in one short visit.

Artsy: The Wallace Collection

The Wallace Collection is a true gem among London’s many cultural institutions. It is often considered the best museum to visit for art lovers. Housed within a stunning 18th-century townhouse, the Wallace Collection boasts a breathtaking array of art. It includes everything from paintings, sculptures, porcelain, and furniture but is displayed like a living, personal collection rather than a stuffy, curated gallery. Visitors can explore works from renowned artists such as Titian, Rembrandt, and Fragonard. 

The museum itself is a work of art, featuring lavish period-styled rooms and elegant architecture. Stepping into the Wallace Collection feels like stepping back in time. A visit allows guests to immerse themselves in a historical and artistic ambiance.

Unlike some larger, more crowded museums in London, the Wallace Collection offers a more intimate and tranquil setting. Visitors can take their time to admire the art, reflect, and connect with each piece on a deeper level. I love escaping from the rain here, where the lavish, texture wallpaper envelopes me in a warm blanket of awe!

Alternative: Dennis Severs’ House

The Dennis Severs’ House is not your typical museum. Instead, it’s a meticulously recreated 18th-century home that serves as a time capsule. Transporting visitors back in time. As you walk through its rooms, you’re immersed in a world that feels authentically lived-in. As if its occupants just stepped out the front door, returning home any minute. The experience is designed to stimulate all your senses, making it feel like you’ve truly stepped into the past.

Dennis Severs’ House tells a unique and elaborate narrative through its rooms. Capturing the life of the fictional Jervis family, Huguenot silk weavers who once lived there. Each room represents a different moment in the family’s history. Complete with period-appropriate sights, sounds, and even scents. The immersive storytelling encourages visitors to imagine and engage with the house’s history, creating a deep connection to the past.

I love coming here on a rainy day when the fires are burning in the fireplaces, and you feel an immediate sense of coziness upon crossing the threshold. As you explore, you’ll be aware of the air of mystery about the home. As you move through its spaces, you will uncover hidden details and clues about the family’s life. This sense of discovery makes each visit a unique and engaging experience. The Dennis Severs’ House offers a rare escape from the modern world in a bustling city like London.

For the Kids: The Natural History Museum 

The Natural History Museum is one of London’s most impressive Victorian buildings. Since this museum is FREE to enter, I often come here on rainy days, just to sit inside the awe-inspiring interior. While the museum is for everyone, it focuses on appealing each of their incredible collections to kids. They aim to educate children about the natural world fun and engagingly.

The museum is home to an enormous collection of specimens, artifacts, and interactive exhibits that explore the natural world and its history. One of the most popular attractions for children is the Dinosaurs Gallery. This series of rooms features a range of animatronic dinosaurs, fossils, and interactive displays that bring these ancient creatures to life. Children can also explore the earth galleries, which showcase the planet’s geological history. Including volcanoes, earthquakes, and other natural phenomena. Be sure not to miss exploring the Hintze Hall, which features a suspended blue whale skeleton. Walking underneath this enormous creature, you can truly be in awe of its size and scale!

Warm Up with Market Comfort Food

After a morning of exploring the museum, you’ll likely be ready for a warm and comforting meal. London has no shortage of cozy restaurants where you can indulge in delicious comfort food. But one of my favourite places to go on a rainy day are London’s Food Halls. More than any other city I’ve visited, London has a wealth of indoor Food Halls and Markets where you can find something for any appetite. You can make your meal time an experience going from booth to booth, getting little bites to share so you can try as many different kinds of food as possible!

Classic: Seven Dials Market

For our classic tour, let’s head into one of central London’s most famous historical areas, Seven Dials. Seven Dials, named after the seven streets which converged here, was home to several prominent writers and artists, including Charles Dickens and William Hogarth. They each drew inspiration from the diverse and colourful characters that lived in the area. Although the neighbourhood was once plagued by poverty, crime, and disease, the historic buildings remain today, but the occupants are now upscale brands and classy restaurants.

Hidden within the area is the Seven Dials Market. This covered food hall features over 25 different stalls to choose from. Everything from street food and craft beer to artisanal coffee and fanciful desserts. My top pick for those looking for classic British food is a stop inside Pick & Cheese. This is the first cheese conveyor belt restaurant in the world! Here, you’ll find a myriad of artisanal cheeses from around the UK, paired with a selection of toppings and crackers. Each combination spins around the conveyor belt, enticing hungry guests to devour them. It’s a must-see for cheese lovers. And since Britain makes some of the world’s best cheese, it’s a place to try a few local varieties.

Artsy: Mercato Mayfair

The Mercato Mayfair is an enchanting food hall housed in a restored historic building that was once St. Mark’s Church. This exquisitely renovated space retains much of its original architectural beauty, including stained glass windows and intricate stone details, creating a breathtaking backdrop for its main purpose as a vibrant food market.

The old nave has been cleared out of the pews and instead features a modern cafeteria-style shared-seating dinner room with rainbow-coloured tables. Adding a modern pop of colour to the old Greek revival architecture. The vibrant stalls beckon you in with their array of food from all over the world! From Italian pasta and pizza to Japanese sushi, Mexican street food, and Middle Eastern delicacies, there’s something to satisfy every palate. It’s a true paradise for food enthusiasts eager to explore a world of flavours in one place. And in the basement, you’ll find a small brewery where they make the beer right on-site! Booths have been slotted into the old crypt where you and your friends can escape the rain over a pint of beer or glass of gin.

Alternative: Spitalfields Market

Spitalfields Market is steeped in history inside its 17th-century interior, yet it is located inside the alternative hipster hub in East London! Cobblestone streets and charming Victorian architecture surround it, but inside, this market is home to eclectic boutiques and modern fusion-style food! Spitalfields is the epicentre for alternative artists, designers, and creatives. The market is a treasure trove of artisanal crafts, handmade jewelry, funky artwork, and one-of-a-kind home decor. 

But for our purposes today, we’re here for the food! The market is world-renowned for its passionate street food scene. You can explore a world of culinary delights, with vendors serving everything from gourmet burgers and artisanal sandwiches to international street foods like falafel, dumplings, and more. It’s a paradise for food lovers who enjoy sampling a variety of cuisines. Their modern take on traditional English crumble, from Humble Crumble, is my favourite way to warm up on a rainy day!

For the Kids: The V&A Cafe

Ok, now I know what you might be thinking: another museum? But let me tell you, inside the Victoria and Albert Museum is one of the city’s most amazingly decorated food halls! The V&A is FREE to enter, so just walk inside and make your way to the museum cafe. When I say “museum cafe,” you might be picturing a small, cramped room with bare white walls and stuffy, boring food. Which is the exact opposite of what kids like. But nothing could be further from what you’ll find inside the V&A Cafe.

The V&A Cafe has three sumptuously decorated rooms for diners to enjoy as they escape the rain. Designed by James Gamble, William Morris, and Edward Poynter, the various opulently decorated cafeteria rooms reflect the eclectic tastes of the Victorian era. But they are still enjoyed immensely by guests today. 

And this place has tons of kids inside! So you don’t need to worry about keeping quiet. Many school groups eat here so you won’t feel out of place. The cafe even goes out of its way to cater to kids, offering children specialty lunchtime meal boxes. Perfectly suited for kids’ palettes and appetites. And while the prices might be more inflated than at a small local cafe, you can’t beat the ambiance. But, if you really want to save a few pounds, you can also bring in your own packed lunches. I often stopped by my local Pret-a-Manger on the way to the V&A cafe and enjoyed my packed lunch inside this stunning interior. 

Get Lost in a Bookstore

After lunch, if the rain is still hitting the pavement, there’s no better place to escape than a cozy bookstore. And London is home to some of the world’s most iconic bookstores!

Classic: Marchpane

Cecil Court is a tranquil pedestrian lane adorned with antiquarian bookstores. And nestled within the heart is Marchpane Rare Books—a hidden gem in London’s literary landscape. The spot has been a book lovers’ destination since it opened in 1989. Since then, it has become the premier specialist in vintage children’s and illustrated books and historic London ephemera. Marchpane prides itself in assembling the finest collection of collectible children’s classics such as Winnie-the-Pooh, Peter Pan, The Wind in the Willows and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Perusing the shelves here is like walking through a literary museum with many treasures. Even if you aren’t in the market for vintage literature, the beautiful illustrations inside these books are a classic exploration of Britain’s literary past.

Artsy: Daunt Books Marylebone

A visit to Daunt Books in Marylebone is a delightful journey for artsy book lovers. Located in the heart of Marylebone, this iconic bookstore exudes the dark academic aesthetic with its Edwardian oak galleries, antique stained glass windows, emerald green walls and inviting décor that exudes a sense of literary tradition.

Daunt Books is renowned for specializing in travel literature and hosts an unrivalled collection of travel guides. But for anyone interested in art, these travel books provide so many exciting insights into art from around the world. Pick up any book on the shelves, and you’ll be transported to far-off lands in the dry comfort of the Daunt library. In addition to travel books, Daunt Books offers a curated selection of stationary, making it a one-stop destination for creative and artistic souls.

Alternative: Libreria Bookshop

Libreria Bookshop, located on Hanbury Street, is an avant-garde bookstore that offers a distinctive and immersive experience for book enthusiasts. Libreria’s interior is a masterpiece of design and architecture. Conceived by the innovative studio SelgasCano, the space is characterized by its curved, tunnel-like bright yellow bookshelves that envelop all visitors.

For the Kids: South Kensington Books

One of my favourite little shopping streets is Thurloe Street in South Kensington. Amongst the rows of elegant, 19th-century Victorian and Georgian buildings, you’ll find the charming entrance to South Kensington Books. South Kensington Books is an independent bookshop open at this site since the 1940s. They have strived for over 75 years to source some of the best British books for their local community. And because Kensington is such a popular spot for families, they always have a wonderful selection of unique British children’s books. I found many beautifully illustrated books here that delighted the little ones back home. Since the store is small enough, you can let the kids explore on their own without worrying they’re get lost, like in the larger, chain bookshops. This way, they can find something they’re interested in while you can peruse something for yourself!

Explore London’s Most Interesting Shopping Stops

When you can’t go out and enjoy the sights on a rainy day, it’s the perfect time to hit the shops! London is known for its incredible shopping, and there are plenty of indoor destinations where you can stay dry while discovering all the wonders London stores offer.

Classic: Covent Garden Apple Market

Covent Garden opened its first fruit and vegetable market in the 17th century. The fruit and veg have gone today, but it’s a popular shopping destination. Under the beautiful Georgian-covered arcade, you’ll find the Covent Garden Apple Market. But you won’t find any actual apples; instead, you can discover a series of stalls featuring artisanal craft, charming boutiques, and one-of-a-kind antiques. You can find plenty here if you’re interested in jewelry, artwork, clothing, or unique gifts! If you’re a tourist, the Apple Market is where you can find many locally crafted souvenirs that make for special mementos for your trip to London.

Artsy: Liberty London

If you’re looking to explore one of London’s most fantastic department stores, which specializes in amazing artistic pieces, you need to check out Liberty London. Liberty is an iconic department store in the heart of London, known for its stunning architectural features. The building itself is a work of art. Walking up towards it, you’re immediately struck by its amazing and intricate Tudor-style timber façade. 

But inside is where the real magic happens… Liberty has a carefully curated selection of home decor, fashions, textiles and ceramics. Their merchandise often collaborates with renowned British fashion designers and artists to create exclusive collections. If you’re interested in wearable arty items, you’ll find a range of clothing and accessories that reflect the creativity of leading British designers. Liberty London‘s commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and artistic design makes it a must-visit destination for art lovers. And on a rainy day in London, the fantastical interior of this department store makes it an even more unique and amazing experience. 

Alternative: Brick Lane Vintage Market

The Brick Lane Vintage Market, deep in the heart of East London, is a treasure trove for vintage enthusiasts. The old Truman Brewery has been transformed into a bustling underground vintage clothing market. Stepping down the stairs, you enter into a labyrinth of individual boutiques selling vintage and retro clothing from every decade!

Whether it’s glamorous fur coats, vintage bridal wear, men’s suits, or vinyl records, there are so many amazing discoveries to be made. The diversity of sellers adds to the treasure hunt that is a vintage shopping experience!

For the Kids: Hamley’s

Hamley’s Toy Store is one of the most iconic places to bring your kids in London. Hamleys is world famous, holding the honour of being the world’s oldest toy store! The store opened in 1760 as a toy shop specializing in Noah’s Ark sets. It has expanded across seven floors, covering over 50,000 square feet. It is the oldest toy store and the world’s largest.

Classic: Clos Maggiore

Dinner at Clos Maggiore is like stepping into a fairy tale. The restaurant is a magical oasis often celebrated as one of the city’s most romantic dining spots. Tucked away in the bustling heart of Covent Garden, this enchanting restaurant wraps you in an atmosphere of warmth and elegance the moment you walk through the door. If you’re in the mood for some seriously good modern Indian food, you’ve got to check out Gunpowder in Spitalfields. This place is a gem for anyone who loves a twist on classic Indian recipes. Tucked away near the lively Spitalfields market, Gunpowder has this cozy, kinda rustic vibe that’s all about chill sophistication and amazing flavours.

The menu is all about sharing and trying new things. Think small plates packed with big tastes, perfect for passing around the table. You’ve got to try their unique takes on street food and regional faves – like their mind-blowing spicy venison and vermicelli doughnut or the tangy mustard broccoli. Plus, they keep things fresh and exciting with seasonal updates, so there’s always something new to taste, depending on what’s in season. Trust me, a meal here is like an alternative adventure for your taste buds!

For the Kids: Dishoom Covent Garden

Dishoom Covent Garden, inspired by the old Irani cafés of Bombay, is a vibrant and welcoming spot perfect for large families. The restaurant’s chic decor creates a warm and inviting atmosphere for a cold and rainy evening. The aromatic spices from the kitchen and the gentle buzz of conversation add to its lively yet cozy ambiance. Dishoom offers a unique take on Indian cuisine with a menu that blends traditional Bombay flavours with a modern twist, creating a diverse and compelling culinary experience. 

While Iranian cuisine might seem inaccessible for most kids, this restaurant prides itself on serving delicious food for kids and adults alike, no matter how familiar they are with Iranian food. While kids can enjoy everything off the regular menu, they also have a special chote (little) menu for kids with smaller portions, very little spice, but just as nice.

Evening Entertainment

After a full day of exploring London’s rainless interiors, there’s nothing like settling in for a good movie or one of London’s fantastical theatre shows! Or if you’re into keeping active, there are plenty of entertaining experiences to be had indoors!

Classic: Les Mis

The Sondheim Theatre is home to London’s most renowned, longest-running musical, Les Mis. Although it’s set in France and written by famed French author Victor Hugo, Les Misérables became one of the most popular musicals when it was adapted into English by producer Cameron Mackintosh. The show opened in London in October 1985 and has remained a steadfast symbol of theatre in the West End. The epic musical features a captivating story of love, self-sacrifice, and redemption set against the backdrop of post-revolutionary France. Les Misérables is always a classic choice due to its universal appeal, timeless music, and emotional depth.

The Curzon Soho, also known as the Curzon Cinema in Soho, is an art-house cinema which screens a diverse range of films that often include independent, foreign, and arthouse options. For the Kids: The Lion King

The Lyceum Theatre has been home to the world-famous musical “The Lion King” for years, and there is a good reason it’s stuck around for so long. “The Lion King” is one of the world’s most beloved and iconic musicals, based on the Disney animated film of the same name. But the stage adaptation of the musical is a breathtaking production. The show features intricate costumes, elaborate masks, and life-sized puppets of animals that bring the show to life like nothing else. The stage comes alive with vibrant colours and dynamic performances that bring the African savannah to life in front of your eyes. As the name suggests, the Sherlock Holmes Pub is dedicated to the iconic detective, Sherlock Holmes. The immersive decor brings visitors into the world of Holmes with dark wood panelling, vintage wallpaper, Victorian memorabilia, and period artifacts that transport you to 221B Baker Street.

The History of Provencal Markets

Provence is such a culturally distinctive part of France. The name “Provence” is derived from the Latin term “Provincia,” meaning “province” or “territory.” During the Roman era, Provence was established as a Roman province known as “Provincia Romana .” The Romans initially divided the area into smaller regions, but “Provincia” became the word associated with the entire region. And over time, it just stuck.

Even the earliest Romans saw this land as a place which held huge agricultural potential. The combination of a favourable climate and diverse landscapes allowed a massive variety of fruits, vegetables and flowers to grow in abundance.

The First Provencal Market

Provencal markets in France have a long and rich history. The tradition can be traced back to ancient times. The Greeks established trading posts in the region around 600 BC, bringing in the concept of open-air markets. These early markets served as hubs for exchanging goods.

During the Middle Ages, Provencal markets gained even more prominence. They were crucial in supporting local economies and facilitating trade between neighbouring towns and villages. Markets were held in central squares, where merchants and farmers gathered to sell their goods. The markets became integral to daily life, offering diverse products. This time it was more than just produce. It included items like textiles, pottery, and handicrafts.

As the rest of the world began to change, grow and modernize, these markets never lost their importance. Despite other changes, like the introduction of supermarkets, Provencal markets still held great importance in people’s daily lives. The one-on-one interactions between vendors and buyers can never be replaced. The markets remain integral to the region’s identity, reflecting its agricultural heritage, culinary traditions, and vibrant local culture.

Features of a Provencal Market

There are a few key features that make a Provencal Market unique. Each city throughout Provence, no matter its size, will host their own weekly market on a specific day. Refer to my chart below to determine where you can find each city’s market day. This means that no matter where you are, you can find a market to shop at within an hour from your home base.

A Provencal Market is almost always held outdoors. Allowing vendors to simply show up on the day and set up their table or a cart on the sidewalks and squares. Busy streets are closed to vehicle traffic on market days, allowing pedestrians to easily walk up and down the streets to peruse the market wares.

A classic Provencal market will sell everything from fresh produce, cheese, flowers, souvenirs, textiles, prepared foods, and (of course) wine. You need to remember while many markets do cater to tourists, these markets are primarily a vital function of the local community. Residents greet each other weekly to catch up, gossip and, yes, do their daily shopping. Immersing yourself in this lively, friendly and electric atmosphere is a key part of how you can participate in that iconic Provençal way of life.

Marche paysans, Farmer’s Markets

In addition to Provencal Markets, there are also Marche paysans or Farmer’s Markets. These markets will focus entirely on locally grown, seasonal produce. Usually sold by the very farmer who grew it! I’ve heard some people complain or be disappointed when they discover the market they went to is a marche paysans simply because they can’t find all the souvenirs they were looking for. But personally, I often find these smaller, more local markets even more rewarding to visit. Yes, they will be missing the tea towels and soap and lavender sachets, but here, the food is the real star. They have a much higher focus on locally grown produce, and you’ll never taste anything fresher! 

When are the Markets Open?

Most of the larger, more tourist-friendly markets are open year-round. During the winter, these markets tend to be much smaller. With fewer tourists to cater to and less fresh produce coming in they still run but just in a more condensed fashion. The smaller markets, especially the farmer’s markets, are generally only open from April to December. I always check online the opening times and dates before heading out for the day. This way, you can ensure they’ll be open when you arrive.

What Time Does the Market Start?

Provencal Markets start early in the morning. It is perhaps the one thing the French seem to be willing to get up early in the morning to do. Most markets start selling at 8 or 8:30 am. Smaller vendors will sell out as the day wears on, but I generally find that if you’re a tourist, you can almost always find what you need, no matter the time of day. Tourists aren’t as committed to buying from one particular vendor as the locals do. Each one having their own personal relationship with the vendor and their produce.

The stalls start to close around noon as people want to get packed up for lunch. By 1 pm, the town, which was once choc-a-block with stalls and busy shoppers, looked as if nothing was ever here. Street cleaners mill about ensuring there is no trance left behind from the morning mayhem.

What Time to Arrive?

Arriving early can be really important to the ease of your experience. Most of these towns see a massive influx of people on market days- with vendors, locals and tourists. And since these cities don’t have this kind of traffic throughout the week, parking is limited. The earlier you arrive, the better chance you have a spot close to the start of the market. The later you arrive, the further you might have to park out of town. You often see people circling the centre of town endlessly, looking for a spot. And trust me, they look really frustrated.

One tip for those who don’t mind walking is to search in advance for a parking lot about 10 minutes walk from the market. These are usually wide open as most people will only be searching for spots as close to the market as possible. Personally, I love the lack of street these options provide, and the walk into town is often a scenic addition to the experience.

Street parking is usually free. If you are parking in a designed parking lot, you must pay by the hour. Usually, you’ll have to pay in advance for a set amount of time and leave the ticket in your window dash to show you’ve paid. If you need more time, you’ll need to return to your vehicle and buy a new ticket for another hour or so. Be sure you don’t leave any valuables visible in your car. Place anything of note in the truck or tucked away from view.

Be Sure To Bring Cash

Most markets still only accept cash. Although a few more commercial markets, like Les Halles in Avignon and Nimes, will take cards, the smaller markets have yet to adopt this new technology. Even in Aix-en-Provence, where the market is open almost daily, I found that vendors selling more expensive goods would only take cash. So be sure to bring some money with you. The lines for the ATMs (if there are any) can be very long. It’s also essential to have some small bills and loose changes. Some vendors won’t be able to break larger bills for you. You can always pop into a nearby convenience or grocery store to break those larger bills.

Stop by the Tourist Office

If the market town you’re visiting has a Tourist Office open when you arrive, that’s always my first stop. The people who work in these tourist offices, especially in the smaller towns, are so friendly and want to show off their incredible home. They always carry free maps of the village and provide suggestions of what to see at the market and throughout the rest of the town. One of the first questions I ask at the tourist office are they recommendations of the best local park. I always try to pick up items throughout the market for a picnic. And Provence has some of the best public parks which are the perfect setting for a charming little picnic.

What to Do After the Market

If you don’t feel like bringing the goods for a picnic, one of the best ways to watch the market come to a close is to grab a spot in a cafe that faces the market square. These are the perfect place to study the vendors closing their carts down for the day. And watch as the busy streets suddenly go quiet.

After lunch, I would recommend heading back into town. It feels like you have the whole city to yourself after the crowds have all disappeared. This is the best time to do your sightseeing. During the market hours, stalls and vendors often block the roads. And cover up key sights in town. So it’s best to explore after they’ve closed up for the day. If you’ve paid for parking, you can see if free street parking has opened up once the marketgoers have gone home.

What are the Best Markets to Visit in Provence?

As mentioned above, you can’t go wrong with any market you choose in Provence. But if you’re only in Provence for a few days and want to maximize your time, I would make a few recommendations. Aix-en-Provence is one of the largest cities in Provence, and they have a market open every day of the week. This lively market is known for its fresh produce, fragrant flowers, and artisanal crafts. Don’t miss the delectable calissons, a traditional Aix-en-Provence candy specialty made from almond paste, candied melons, and oranges.

Isle-sur-la-Sorgue‘s Sunday Market is famous for its antique treasures in addition to its expansive Provencal market. The Saint-Rémy Market takes place every Wednesday. The picturesque town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence was made famous by Van Gogh’s paintings. And it was also the birthplace of Nostradamus. But today, Saint-Remy is best known for its fabulous market that offers a delightful mix of fresh produce, local specialties, artisan crafts, and more.

Nestled in the hilltop is the quaint village of Bonnieux. This charming and picturesque market occurs every Friday. Although smaller than others, the town itself is an absolute delight, and there is nothing like wandering these streets which explode with colourful produce and beautiful textiles on market day. 

Farmers Markets

To explore one of the most expansive local farmer’s markets, I would check out Coustellet. The Coustellet Farmers Market takes place every Sunday, and during the summer months, they also have a Wednesday evening market. Situated in the whimsical village of Coustellet, in the heart of the Luberon region, this market is renowned for its focus on local and organic produce that highlights the unique agriculture of the Luberon.

Rainy Day Options

If you happen to be in Provence on one of those rare rainy days, you should visit the Avignon or Nimes indoor Market, commonly known as Les Halles. These vibrant indoor markets are a bustling hub of activity. Since these markets are enclosed, making them an ideal destination during inclement weather. Les Halles are renowned for their incredible selection of fresh produce, local delicacies, cheeses, meats, seafood, pastries, and much more. Rainy days often create a cozy ambiance. And exploring these markets allows you to discover and savour the region’s culinary offerings. 

Navigating the Market

When you arrive, I often find first-time visitors can be overwhelmed. Provencal markets are a sensory feast, so allow ample time to wander through the stalls and get adjusted to the bustling atmosphere. There is nothing is worse than feeling like you must rush through the experience to rid yourself of the true Provencal way of life. Take your time to soak in the ambiance and engage with the vendors.

Aside from the sprawling markets like in Aix, I generally find that doing one lap around allows you to get the lay of the land. And its good to do before buying anything. Although you might spot something you like, you’ll find that a few stalls downs, further away from the road and the crush of people, the same item is half the price! So, if you have the time, do a general scope of the vendors and their wares before committing to a purchase. If you spot something special along the way, make a note of it. Jot down the location on the map you got from the tourist centre. Or use your phone to drop off a location pin at that spot. That way you can find your way back.

Greeting & Interacting with the Vendors

One of the joys of visiting a Provencal market is interacting with friendly and passionate vendors. You shouldn’t expect everyone to speak English, especially in the smaller, more remote towns and villages. In the larger, more touristy markets, you’ll find lots of vendors who will speak to you in English. But it shouldn’t be expected. Even if you don’t speak French, everyone is so patient and helpful in walking you through purchases. So don’t ever be afraid of interacting simply because you don’t speak the language. Remember to always say “bonjour” when greeting the vendor. This is considered very polite, and starting a conversation without doing so is almost rude.

Merci (thank you) and au revoir (goodbye) are other key phrases that will go a long way in fostering a positive connection with the seller. Feel free to inquire about the origin of the produce, the best way to use a particular spice or which fruits are ready to eat and perfectly ripe. They are so passionate about their produce. I even had one woman write me down a recipe she wanted me to try after I bought her white asparagus.

What to Buy at the Market

There are so many things to buy at the market, and it can be overwhelming to know what is unique to Provence and worth purchasing. For produce, you want to know what’s in season in Provence, as this will always yield the most delicious fruits and vegetables. As mentioned above, I adore filling my basket with different items to create the perfect afternoon picnic. This gives you an aim and a goal for your shopping adventure. And eating it right after purchasing, you get to taste the freshness of everything in the market.

Goat Cheese

Be sure to pick up some fresh bread at the market and pair this with a smattering of cheese. Goat cheese is the Provencal specialty. The weather in Provence has a combination of low rainfall, intense sun and wind. Growing tall, healthy grass for cows to graze on is difficult in Provence. Goats, on the other hand, happily eat dry plants and herbs. Plus, they produce really flavourful milk. You’ll find goat cheese in so many different varieties. Some are smothered in olive oil, others have ivory-coloured rinds, but my favourites are the ones covered in dried herbs and flowers.

A specialty in Provence made from goat cheese is Banon. This cheese dish is made by wrapping a ball of goat cheese in chestnut leaves. While it ages, it soaks in the taste of the chestnut leaves, creating this nutty and creamy flavour!

Olives and Tapenade

Olives are immensely popular in Provence and have grown almost across the country. If you’re staying in a rental home, you’ll probably have an olive tree, or grove, in your backyard. Olives thrive in Provence due to favourable conditions, including those mentioned above. But one unique aspect of Provencal weather is their mistrals. A mistral is a strong, cold north-westerly wind that blows through Provence. While it can sometimes be intense, the Mistral positively impacts olive cultivation. It helps to reduce humidity levels, prevent diseases and pests, and promotes good air circulation.

You won’t find olive oil in the markets (or you shouldn’t) as the sun makes olive oil less flavourful. But you will find huge tubs and pots of fresh olives. Seasoned in a variety of different herbs and spices. But one of my favourite ways to eat Provencal olives is in a tapenade! Provençal tapenade is made primarily from olives, capers, anchovies, garlic, and olive oil. In fact, the word “tapenade” comes from the Provençal word “tapeno,” meaning caper. Mixing this all together, you get this wonderfully flavourful paste. Best spread over bread for easy eating. Tapenade also comes in all different flavours with additions like sun-dried tomatoes, basil, and nuts.

Arles Sausage

If you’re looking for a little bit of meat for your spread, make your way to one of the many different saucissons stands. The most famous is the Arles sausage, also known as Saucisson d’Arles. The Arles sausage is typically made from pork and pork fat, seasoned with various herbs and spices characteristic of the Provencal cuisine. The recipe can vary, but common ingredients include garlic, thyme, rosemary, fennel seeds, black pepper, and sometimes red wine.

Unlike in North America, these sausages are cured. They don’t need to be kept in the fridge; just stored in a cool, dark and dry place. They are edible for about two months if stored this way, but trust me, once you start to eat them, you’ll finish it off in less than an hour!

Lavender Honey

To add some sweetness to the spread, grab some Lavender Honey. Lavender honey is created by bees that predominantly gather nectar from the lavender flowers that bloom abundantly in the region. This adds a delicate floral aroma and distinct flavour to the honey. And it’s unlike anything else you’ll taste. It’s a perfect accompaniment to soft goat cheese or dipping sauce for apples. Lavender Honey also makes a wonderful gift for anyone back home. And very Provencal.

French Radishes and Butter

A traditional French snack is a plate of radishes from the garden served with some salty butter. Sounds like a strange combination but trust me, it’s fantastic! The two ingredients’ complementary flavours and textures (butter’s creaminess and the radish’s sharp peppery taste) create this amazingly harmonious blend. French radishes are generally smaller and more cylindrical than the varieties you might have had before. They also typically have a crispier texture and spicy flavour that makes them a unique flavour to try!

Wine & Grapes

Provencal is known for its special terroir. Terroir is a term which refers to the unique combination of soil, climate, and geographical features that influence grape growth. The Provencal coastal cliffs, rolling hills, and inland plains provide a range of microclimates and soil types. This diversity contributes to the complexity and character of Provencal wines and their grapes. Add to this the hot, dry summers and mild winters with ample sunshine, and the result is a balanced wine with bold fruity flavours.

Rosé Wine

The most popular variety of wine you’ll find in Provence is Rosé. In fact, it is the largest rosé wine-producing region in France. Provencal rosé is known for its pale pink colour, delicate aromas of red berries, and refreshing acidity. Almost every market will have a wine seller where you can get a bottle of wine for less than ten euros. And no doubt it will have been made from grapes grown less than a kilometre from where you’re purchasing it. It really doesn’t get any more local than that!

Muscat Grapes

If you happen to be in Provence late in summer and early fall, don’t miss the opportunity to buy some Muscat grapes. Muscat grapes have a sweet and floral taste with pronounced notes of musk and exotic fruits. They often exhibit flavours of apricot, peach, orange blossom, and sometimes a hint of citrus. They are beyond amazing, and getting them fresh from the source makes them taste all the better!

Pêche de Vigne

Another unique fruit variety special to Provence is the Pêche de Vigne. The Pêche de Vigne, also known as Vine Peach or Vineyard Peach, is only in season in August in Provence. The Pêche de Vigne has an intense aroma with a honeyed, floral, tangy taste. The fruit is typically smaller in size compared to regular peaches. But its small size packs a punch. In addition to the taste, the colour of the peach is totally different than other peaches. It is almost black with a deep, blood-red interior flesh. A dramatic fruit to be sure! Although the season for this peach is short, lots of producers make jam out of this variety of peaches so you can taste it year-round.

Cavaillon Melon

I’m not usually a Melon fan, but you must try Provence’s local variety, the Cavaillon Melon. The Cavaillon melon is grown from all the way from May to September. This fruit benefits from the long hot summers and sunlight of Provence. All growers hand-picked each melon to ensure its soft flesh wasn’t damaged or bruised. Because it is so precious, this melon isn’t widely exported and makes it a special Provencal treat.

The taste of these melons is so sweet but with just the gentlest hint of acidity, making it miles better than any “cantaloupe” I’ve ever had. To tell if your melon is ready to eat, you simply smell the navel of the melon, where the steam would grow. It should have a strong melon scent; if it doesn’t, you know it’s not ready just yet.

Vaucluse Cherries

The Vaucluse region in France, with its favourable climate, became a hub for cherry growing, particularly for the confectionery industry. There are various cherry varieties, including Bigarreau, Guigne, Amarelle, and Morello Cherry. The largest concentration of cherry trees in France can be found in the Vaucluse, specifically in the Monts de Venasque. Cherries are delicate and best consumed shortly after purchase. And remember, if it’s been raining, don’t bother with the cherries. Rain sweeps the sweetness out of these berries, so they are best bought only when it’s hot and dry!

Carpentras Strawberries

A unique variety of strawberries, special to Provence, is the Carpentras strawberry. This variety is highly regarded for its unbeatable taste and is one of the four main varieties in France. The French consume an average of 2 kilograms of strawberries per person each year! And Carpentras produces over 4,000 tons annually, selling in markets all over Provence. Carpentras strawberries come into season as soon as the first buds of Spring begin to emerge. And they continue producing until late October, meaning you can almost always find fresh strawberries in the market!

Flowers

When I arrive at my first Provencal Market, I am always sure to pick up a few bouquets of flowers to place around my vacation home. Provence has some of the most incredible flower fields in the world, and the sheer abundance of incredibly lush blooms at every market makes me wish I had this kind of selection (and price) at home! I keep used glass drink bottles and pluck loose stems into these containers for easy vases if there aren’t any floral vases in the house. There is nothing like fresh flowers to make any rental feel more homely, and carrying a bouquet of flowers in your arms while sauntering through the market is like something out of a fairytale.

Fresh Prepared Foods

In almost every Provencal Market, you’ll find rotisserie chicken stands. Usually, you can smell these all the way down the street, and their enticing smell lures you in. These chicken stands also sell roasted potatoes and frites. Those roast potatoes are one of the best things you’ll find at the entire market. They are covered in herbs de Provence as well as sauteed onions and peppers. And the chicken? Probably the most moist chicken you’ll ever eat! Trust me, you won’t regret picking one up for your picnic.

Another popular food many locals get to-go to or “à emporter” is Spanish paella. The locals line up for this even as early as breakfast. Anytime you see a line, you know it will be good. Although we think of paella as a typically Spanish dish, Provence shares a border with Spain, and there is a significant cross-cultural exchange between the two regions. As a result, Spanish culinary traditions, including paella, have entered Provencal gastronomy. Paella is also a dish that takes a long time to cook but can be made in large quantities. Making it a perfect dish for the large crowds at the market.

Provencal Souvenirs

Provencal Markets are awash with amazing things to bring home for your friends, family, and yourself. I always feel like something you can consume at home is a fantastic gift from your holidays. These consumables have an essence of the terroir of the place you’ve visited. And it’s like bringing back a slice of the country itself. 

Lavender

Perhaps the most iconic souvenir from Provence has got to be its lavender. If you visit during the hot summer months, you’ll be greeted by seas of purples blooms spread across the landscape as you drive across the country. Stepping out of your car on the side of the road near the lavender fields is an incredible sensory experience. You can even smell the fields from miles away.

Lavender is not only prized for its visual appeal but also for its aromatic and therapeutic properties. The essential oil derived from lavender is used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, and aromatherapy products. The scent of lavender is often associated with relaxation. One of the most popular things for tourists to buy is lavender sachets. These are inexpensive and make for beautiful gifts to give out. The sachets can be popped into clothes drawers to keep things smelling fresh and discourage insects. You can find barrels of lavender ready to be bought in bulk at the market, often from local farmers. This lavender is easy to harvest and, therefore, cheaper to buy than oils and beauty products, which require more production.

Herbs de Provence

One of the most famous and easy-to-carry slices of Provence you can bring home is Herbes de Provence. Herbes de Provence is a mixture of fragrant herbs, including thyme, rosemary, savoury, oregano, and marjoram. They can add an authentic Provençal touch to your cooking and are ideal for seasoning meats, vegetables, and marinades. You can buy Herbs de Provence in bulk at the market. Then you can divvy it up into smaller containers when you get home. This is the most cost-efficient method. Although if you prefer something a little fancier, you can buy little tins and cloth bags with provencal designs that will look beautiful on your kitchen counter.

Camarague Salt

Akin to the Herbs de Provence, another classic cooking essential is salt. And some of the best finishing salt in the world comes from the Camarague. The Camargue is a unique and ecologically diverse delta where the Rhône River meets the Mediterranean Sea. The salt is harvested here through evaporation, where seawater is channelled into shallow salt marshes called salins. The salt concentration increases as the water evaporates under the Mediterranean sun and wind, eventually forming salt crystals.

The Camargue region’s unique environmental conditions contribute to the salt’s distinct flavour and characteristics. The salins are rich in minerals and trace elements, which give Camargue salt its subtle, briny flavour and slightly greyish or pinkish colour. It is often considered a gourmet salt due to its unique flavour profile. It can enhance the flavours of various dishes, from seafood and meats to vegetables and even desserts.

Provencal Fabric

What we now consider typical Provencal fabric designs were heavily influenced by Indian textiles. These were first imported to France through the ports in Marseille in the 17th century. These Indiennes, as they were called back then, were extremely expensive and owning these textiles was a way to show off your wealth and status. As these imported fabrics became more and more popular, the French silk weaver found that their goods were no longer being purchased. So the weavers of Provence began learning how to craft their own unique rendition of traditional Indian designs. Employing their own Provencal colour schemes and modifying the patterns.

Provencal Designs

Over time, they created a style all their own. And these fabrics are one of the most characteristic images of the Provence dining table. Provence doesn’t shy away from colour. Provencal fabrics are known for their rich and vibrant colours, like bright yellows, deep blues, rich greens, and blood-reds. These vivid colours are reminiscent of the vibrant landscapes, sunny climate, and Mediterranean influences.

The patterns found in Provencal fabrics are also heavily influenced by nature. Common motifs include flowers, such as lavender, sunflowers and poppies. Also found in these patterns are images of fruits, herbs, birds, and insects (especially cicadas). These designs celebrate the agricultural abundance and natural beauty of Provence.

To be fair, many of these fabrics are actually produced outside the country today, but the patterns are still unique to Provence. And you won’t be able to find these designs anywhere else. My favourite combination to buy is a lovely tablecloth and some matching (or contrasting) placemats. Napkins and placemats also make for great presents to bring home as gifts.

Savon de Marseille

You’ll often see rows of rainbow-coloured soaps decorating different market stalls. These aren’t just any soaps but the iconic Savon de Marseille. The production of Savon de Marseille dates back several centuries. Savon de Marseille holds a special place in the world of soap-making. It is renowned for its simplicity, gentle formulation, and rich history. The soap is made primarily with olive oil, creating mild, hypoallergenic soap. In addition to this, the bars contain no synthetic fragrances, dyes, or preservatives. 

The soap is often stamped with markings indicating its origin and authenticity. These markings typically include the “Savon de Marseille” logo. As well as the percentage of oils used in the soap. 72% olive oil is considered the highest quality. Despite not using synthetic fragrances, they are myriads of different scents. Each one is made using natural oils that enhance the natural smell of the soap. Getting these soaps directly from the market, so close to their manufacturer, means you can get such a high-quality product at a low cost. I love buying these in bulk and giving them out as gifts!

Fruit Jam

As mentioned above, Provence is home to some of the best fruits you can get anywhere in the world. And lucky for you, even if you aren’t there when your favourite fruit is in season, you can taste the essence in their fruit jams and spread. These are also great to bring home to keep the flavours of Provence in your pantry year-round. While the plain jams are wonderful, my favourites are those with herbal and floral flavours. Peaches and thyme or apricot and lavender and even strawberry and basil are just some of the delicious concoctions these Provencal chefs have bottled to perfection!

Provencal Street Art

Buying street art in Provencal Markets is a remarkable opportunity to connect with the vibrant artistic heritage of the region. And to also support local artists. Provence, known for its picturesque landscapes, has long been a source of inspiration for artists. But no one made Provence more famous than Vincent van Gogh.

During his time in Arles and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Van Gogh created some of his most iconic works, capturing the essence of the region’s beauty through his unique artistic style. And today, many artists are still doing the same thing. Street art is usually fairly cheap, yet these little vignettes capture some of your favourite spots in Provence. A wonderful memory to bring home and hang on your wall. I always look for their works in progress on tables nearby to assure myself that the works they are selling as their own. And not just mass-produced printings.

Provencal Pottery

Provençal pottery adorned with vibrant colours and intricate patterns is something you can bring home to remind yourself of your travel every day. Provencal Pottery has been made here since Roman times. And over the years, they have developed a signature style of pottery. The most common type is terra cotta, made from the red clay most commonly found in the region of Roussillon. The style may vary slightly, but Provencal pottery generally relies on those vibrant reds, yellows and greens to decorate the flatware. A reflection of the landscape of Provence. While plates and bowls are great, my favourite pieces are the ornate olive oil cruets or olive dishes. These remind me of the olive groves in Provence and make my table spread feel all the more special.

Market Day Tips

BYOB | Bring Your Own Bags

Before leaving for the market, always bring high-quality reusable bags. Other than some thin plastic bags for the produce, sellers won’t typically have bags for you to use, as locals know enough to bring their own. If you prefer to buy yourself a Provencal market bag, they always carry a variety of those at most markets. These are generally made in Morroco but are beautiful and the perfect way to carry your groceries.

If you prefer to bring your own bags, my tried and tested recommendation are the bags from Baggu. These delightfully patterned bags are some of the strongest reusable bags I’ve ever owned and also, when not in use, fold up into these tiny little squares. So they won’t take up extra room or weight in your suitcase. All the more room for souvenirs!

How to Escape the Crowds

A day at the busy market day can get overwhelming. There are so many people, and often some of the streets the market is held on are very narrow, and you can feel like cattle, all squished together. Especially for those who can get anxious in crowds, which I totally understand, there is one thing I recommend when faced with this situation. And that is to quickly duck down a side street. The streets where the main market stalls are located are surrounded by many smaller alleyways and narrow pedestrian lanes. I was amazed in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue how after walking along a side street for less than a second, I went from hundreds of people to a few silent locals wandering the cobblestones. It went immediately silent and is bliss for those needing a minute of peace.

What to Pack for the Picnic

As mentioned throughout this post, my favourite way to wind down after a busy day at the market is with a picnic. If you are going to have a picnic in town after your shopping, there are a few items I always bring with me. Here is my list of Provence picnic essentials

• Wet wipes or napkins
• Disposal forks and butter knives (you can find great ones made of bamboo)
• A good bread knife (also good to slice sausage and fruit)
• Wine bottle opener (if you plan on having wine)
• If you want to sit on the grass, bring a nice big blanket
• Bring your reusable water bottles to drink out of, or dump them out and pour in some rose wine!
• A small plastic bag for garbage (you’ll often get these with your produce, but be sure you keep one as we don’t want to be littering visitors)

 No need for plates; just lay your food out on the wrappings they are often packaged in. It’s family style; just grab what you want! But if you feel like you need plates, be sure to bring some paper plates with you.

Why Go to Mexico City?

Mexico City has it all. Cheap food, amazing cocktail bars, fun activities, gorgeous museums, awe-inspiring street art, retro architecture and phenomenal culture. This itinerary is for a Mexico City Bachelorette party who are maybe a little more eccentric. And don’t want a cookie-cutter weekend. Throw out ideas of strip clubs and manicures. Replace them with enriching museums, astonishing street food and giddying streets to explore with your friends. There are so many different activities to suit all kinds of brides. But you can intertwine all of them in this itinerary to give all the guests a little bit of everything. Whether they like to party or like a more laid-back weekend, I think Mexico City suits the needs of everyone.

Where to Stay

Airbnb in La Condesa | SAVE

Another wonderful thing about a Mexico City Bachelorette is that there are many different types of accommodations. Options to suit all different price points. A great choice for the savers is to rent an Airbnb in La Condesa. La Condesa is my favourite neighbourhood in the entire city. Here you can rent out entire houses and apartments to host your whole crew. This way, you can all stay together. It’s so fun to use the communal kitchen to make some of your meals. Or just relax in the outdoor spaces at night or in the morning. Soaking up all that amazing Mexico City weather! 

I found this incredible house in La Condesa with seven bedrooms and eleven beds. And it’s just under $300 USD a night. If you came with eight girlfriends, that is less than $40/night per person! Plus, you get all the amenities of having a house! There are many different options with Airbnb, from modern chic to more traditional, historic homes. You can really find the perfect fit to suit your bride-to-be.

Casa Decu | STANDARD

If your guests would prefer a hotel, then you should check out the Casa Decu hotel, also in La Condesa. Casa Decu is located inside an old Art Deco building and has quickly become my new favourite hotel in the city. The benefit of hotels are they offer a little bit more privacy and the comfort of not having to clean up for yourself every day. The design of this place is so retro, the amenities are top-notch, and the rooftop breakfast patio is fantastic. They have a huge table under some shade upstairs, perfect to host your group. So you can all eat breakfast together each morning before hitting the streets.

All the rooms, even the most inexpensive, each come with their own mini kitchenette. This way you can keep food your buy along the way in the fridge. But you’ll also have the opportunity to cook a small meal, or just an aperitif before dinner, in the room. Be sure to message the hotel directly to see if they can provide you with additional group promotional rates!

Sofitel Mexico City Reforma | SPLURGE

If you want to go all out, splurge on a few nights at the Sofitel Mexico City. Located on the famous Paseo de la Reforma, the main avenue in Mexico City. This hotel boasts some of the most fabulous views of the city from the comfort of your hotel room. The hotel is the first luxury French-branded hotel in the city, so you know you’re staying somewhere really special. The chic interiors are fabulous and suit the modern bachelorette aesthetic. Plus, their indoor pool on the 28th floor has one of the most spectacular views of the city. Which is even more incredible at sunset! Bring your girlfriends up here at dusk, and they’ll be so impressed!

Day 1 | Arrive and Settle In

The best way to get settled and adjust to the new altitude (Mexico City is, after all, 7,300 feet above sea level) with your girlfriends is a self-guided taco tour. I’ve created this unique taco tour all around La Condesa! This tour lets you explore the neighbourhood while stopping in to try the barrio’s best tacos. Along the way, you can stop and check out whatever your eyes are drawn to. Exploring those little curious corners of the neighbourhood is a great way to work off those tacos, so you’re ready for more!

Hunt for Flowers

As you’re all exploring the neighbourhood for tacos, be sure to go hunting for flowers as well. If you’re travelling as a bridal party, seeking out fresh flowers from the flower carts is the perfect activity! Great practice for the wedding day bouquets. Fresh flowers in Mexico City are so inexpensive and jazz up your Airbnb or Hotel room. In La Condesa, you can simply walk up and down Avenue Amsterdam to find many different vendors. The one across from the Walmart called Flower Jessica (marked on the map above and at the end of the post) is always reliably filled with great flowers! 

Self Made Bouquets

It’s so much fun to grab as many different flowers as your heart delights. Then head back to your hotel’s rooftop patio or communal space to make your own little flower arrangements. It’s a fantastic yet also slightly relaxing activity. Great to do while you adjust to the new time zone and altitude.

“But we don’t have any vases!” you might think. Not to worry! While some stands actually do sell them for cheap, there is another option that is almost free. Just run over to your local Oxxo or 7-Eleven convenience store and buy a few drinks inside glass bottles. Fill your basket up with Topo Chico, Mexican Coke or interesting glass bottles of beer. Get back home and enjoy the refreshing beverages while you make your bouqtes. When you’re done, just pop the flowers into the now empty glass bottles with some fresh water. Easy peasy!

Take it Easy, grab a Churro

While you might be DYING to get out there and grab cocktails, trust me on this one, the altitude can make or break you on your first day! It’s best to take it easy, just on the first day. Especially regarding drinking anything alcoholic. If you’re looking for an evening treat, I advise heading to Churrería El Moro. This churro shop is one of the most popular places in the city. And luckily, they have a few locations so you’re never too far away from one. Grab yourself and your girlfriends a huge tray of churros with their selection of dipping sauces. The perfect sharable delight. In addition to amazing trays of churros, they also sell delicious Mexican hot chocolate. A historical Aztec staple you need to try along the way! Try to take in an early night cause tomorrow we hit the streets!

Day 2 – A Day out for Foodies

Today is all about FOOD! We are going to start the day by going out for Brunch. Brunch in Mexico City is truly world-class! And there are so many different places to go. But if you want to check out my favourites, you can’t go wrong with any of these locations. So if the only I’ve recommended below is booked up there are lots of other options.

Filigrana Brunch

Filigrana is my new favourite brunch spot, so I had to update this list to feature it. Walking inside, you are immediately in awe of the environment. The glass walls allow the beautiful morning sun to filter in, creating rainbows of light on the floor. You are immediately greeted by friendly servers. Before you’ve ever ordered, you are brought out their pastry tray with some of the most inventive, colourful and delicious pastries! I had to try at least once, even though I knew more food was coming. Filigrana specializes in Mexican fusion with dishes that combine various cultures. The tortillas served alongside your meal are made literally on sight. You can watch the tortillas makers at work for some in-house entertainment.

Be sure to sample the licuado de mamey, a smoothie made with the Mexican mamey fruit! Heavenly creamy! For your meal, I highly recommend the tostadas, chilaquiles, and, of course, some delicious freshly made guacamole. Served with those aforementioned fresh tortillas. What is so convenient about Filigrana is that you can make easy reservations in advance on Opentable. Especially if you’re visiting on the weekend with a larger group, reservations are absolutely mandatory! But they’re not too hard to find if you book well enough in advance.

Mercado Medellín

After a filling brunch, it’s time to head over to the Mercado Medellín. This market is a vibrant place to explore in the heart of the trendy Roma Norte neighbourhood. Even the walk you’ll take to get here will awaken all your senses! And the architecture in this colonial barrio is absolutely fantastic.

The market itself is a marvellous place to explore all the dazzling produce native to Mexico. In addition, the market is filled with stores selling salsas, fresh mole, nuts, rainbow-coloured candies, colourful pinatas and more! You can just wander around to your heart’s content. Or follow my self-guided tour to better understand the best things to check out!

Explore more about Roma 

Before our big evening activity, make a point to explore more of the Roma Norte neighbourhood. Roma Norte is known for having the best bar scene, top-class restaurants, incredible street food, and picturesque cafes on every street corner. But the area is also home to some of the best-preserved colonial-era architecture. Every street is plush with greenery and ivy falling off the Juliet balconies above. Wide avenues are home to charming works of art, and the idyllic parks are where locals come to relax.

Although you might not have time to take the entirety of my Roma Walking Tour, I would recommend at least walking up and down some of the side streets around Tepeji street. It’s here where you’ll find the filming location where they shot the Academy Award-nominated movie Roma. These streets are so quiet yet picturesque, so it’s the perfect place to safely wander with your girlfriends.

Huerto Roma Verde

On the way to our next activity, head over to the large intersection at Avenue Yucatan. Across the street, on the east side, you can spot a bright blue column, this giant structure is actually made of old water jugs! This icon marks the monumental entrance to the Huerto Roma Verde. Huerto Roma Verde is a cultural centre made from recovered property once destroyed by the 1985 earthquake. The land was abandoned for 27 years and used as a dumping ground. But Paco Ayala, who initiated the project, saw the 8,000 square feet as an opportunity. He saw the space as a place for regrowth and environmental education through art.

About Huerto Roma Verde

The self-managed community found inside these walls was created by grassroots environmental activists. It began as a small shared vegetable garden. Where residents who lived in small apartments without outdoor space could come and grow their own fresh food. From there, it grew to have a storage tower to collect rainwater, a recycling centre for solid waste and even several farm animals! They aim to focus on sustainability and promote the development of communities integrated into their local environments.

Much of the space is designed to be an urban garden with mind-bending art sculptures created within the living environment. While you can wander the space and appreciate the artworks, you can also stop at the various pop-up businesses. They sell everything from organic cosmetics to vegan desserts and fresh coffee. It’s a fantastic place to do some local shopping!

Take a Cooking Class 

Cooking classes are such wonderful group activities as everyone gets to participate, have some fun and learn more about the culture of the place their visiting. Plus you also get to eat everything you cook! Over at Eat Mexico, they have a cooking class that celebrates Mexico’s food culture and teaches their guests how to master these hundred-year-old recipes. From basic green salsa to corn masa, chicken tinga and papas con chorizo. You’ll learn how to cook nopales, make some chilaquiles and learn more about all the different varieties of Mexican chillies that flavour almost every dish you eat in Mexico.

(Note these classes only run Tues-Friday so plan accordingly.)

DIY Cocktail Tour

For those who don’t want the night to end, you can safely bar hop along with the Avenida Álvaro Obregón in Roma Norte. Start at Gin Gin Álvaro Obregón, my favourite bar; thanks for their out-of-this-world, skeletal decor! Their cocktail menu is IMMENSE and highlights (as is the name of the bar infers) gin! As the night wears on, a DJ will sometimes play live music. While this can get very loud, if that’s your vibe, you’ll enjoy yourself.

The next place I would head to with my girlfriends is Licorería Limantour, just a few doors down. This place is a legendary cocktail bar in Mexico City which some of the most clever drinks & snacks in a chic environment, complete with a gorgeous terrace. Sitting here on a hot night, enjoying a cool breeze, is a fantastic way to while away an evening.

Hanky Panky

If you still are craving some more entertainment, walk or uber up to the northern part of Roma Norte to Hanky Panky Speakeasy. Be sure you book a reservation at this place in advance, as it’s the only way to get in if you’re not a member. Speakeasies have had a resurgence all over the world in the past few years, and this one is perhaps the most fun to discover. The place looks like nothing more than a small taco shop when you arrive. But on the right is a large fridge that juts suspiciously far out from the wall…

Once you provide your reservation details to the man behind the counter, he will open up the beer fridge and usher you inside. He closes the door behind you, and you’ll think the worst for a moment as you are plunged into darkness. But then, another door opens in front of you, and you enter into the chic, deliciously vibey atmosphere of the hidden bar inside. Drinks cost around $160-$220 pesos, which is more than reasonable considering the incredible drama of the place! It’s a delightfully fun experience for those who want to impress and awe their friends. Keep the details of this stop a secret, and the bride will be impressed with your discovery!

Sunday – A Day on the Water

Panadería Rosetta

After what was no doubt a late late night, eating is the only real way to cure a hangover! And set you right for the day ahead. One of my other favourite laid-back brunch restaurants in Mexico City is Panderia Rossetta. This incredible bakery in Roma Norte is a hot spot every morning, no matter the time of day. And there is good reason for this, aside from its spectacular appearance. The pastries baked fresh daily are some of the most inventive, delicious and mouthwateringly beautiful creations. Their guava pastry is one of their most popular options.

Although there is seating outside, you might need to wait a while, depending on how busy it is. Luckily, if you’re staying in the area, you can get a whole selection of parties and coffees to bring back for a laid-back taste test at home. 

Alternatively, I recommend bringing your haul to the nearby Plaza Río de Janeiro. This incredibly beautiful park is encircled by some of the city’s most gorgeous art deco and colonial architecture. It is a wonderful place to enjoy a morning coffee and pastry in the sun. If you’re lucky, you might also have some street food vendors pass you by to top off your breakfast with some fresh tamales or fresh fruit cups!

Xochimilco

After loading up on carbs and recovering from the night before, it’s time to head out to one of the most interesting, vibrant and culturally significant places just outside Mexico City; Xochimilco. Xochimilco is known as the Venice of Mexico. Xochimilco consists of over 170 kilometers of canals spread across the southern part of Mexico City. The word “Xochimilco” means “Floating Gardens,” as this was where the ancient Aztecs created a network of artificial agricultural plots. These garden plots are called chinampas, land rich in minerals, where flowers and a variety of fruits and veggies grow in abundance. Xochimilco is now considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it preserves this Aztec technology.

Where is Xochimilco

Xochimilco is about 45 minutes south of the city. You can easily book an Uber to drive you to and from the Embarcadero Nuevo Nativitas Xochimilco. This is the ONLY place you should arrive to get onto your Trajineras. There are TONS of bike people who might stop you on the way into town saying this place is closed, but it’s not. It’s a common scam to get people to access a different dock with much higher prices. Just tell your driver to ignore them, and push onto your destination.

Trajineras

One of the most iconic aspects of a trip on the canals today are riding inside the neon painted Trajineras. These brightly coloured boats float up and down the canals and today can be rented out by individuals or groups to enjoy the beauty of the canals. They have flat bottoms and float throughout the canals with nothing more than a long wooden ore controlled by your rower, just like a gondolier. In the center of the boat is a large table, and there are about a dozen chairs on either side, so you can have an entire group ride on the same boat! The covered roof is perfect for keeping the sun off during hot days, but if you want to sit out in the sunlight, the front of the boat has ample room.

The boats are vibrantly painted to resemble the flowers that grew on either side of the canals hundreds of years ago. Each boat is given a different name; you might not know that if you know who to call, you can have your name painted on a boat just for you when you arrive. This is perfect for your bride as you can even get it named after her!

How to Rent a Boat

Getting a Trajinera inexpensively isn’t something you should expect when coming to Xochimilco. This isn’t one of those super budget-friendly excursions. The maximum rate set by the city is 500 pesos per hour, per boat (not per person as some tricky boatmen might quote you). You can try and haggle your way down, but unless you have a good grasp of Spanish haggling, you’ll find it difficult to get the rides any cheaper than 400-450 pesos per hour.

2-hours is the minimum I would go for since it takes a while for them to get the boats out of the dock, and an hour would barely get you out into the canals far enough to see the real Xochimilco. I would honestly say I wish we’d gone out for longer! Plus, the longer you go, the better your chance of striking a deal! Remember to tip your boatman at the end of the trip, most of the money you pay goes to his boss, and the driver sees little of that price, so a nice tip will go a long way for them.

Group Tours to Xochimilco

You can easily book a group tour if you’d rather not deal with all these details yourself. This takes all the organization out of your hands and lets you enjoy yourself without needing to be at the wheel. My favourite site to book these tours lately has been Airbnb experiences. I find their prices the most competitive and don’t include too many extras you don’t need. These tours are great as the guides help explain sights along the way and usually include a bit of food! 

You are allowed to bring whatever food and drinks you want with you to the Trajineras. I always recommend stopping by your local convenience stores to load up on some neat snacks and a few drinks. Depending on what day of the week you visit will change what’s open (the weekdays tend to have fewer stalls and sellers open than the weekends). But there’s always something to buy on land and on the water. That’s right, there’s food available throughout the canals as you travel. Vendors with roasted corn, coconut water, tacos, cold beer and freshly made micheladas float up and down the canals. The prices are more than you’d pay in the market, but you pay for the privilege of having them coming right to your boat!

Restaurante Rosetta Dinner

After coming home, it’s probably time for everyone to enjoy a bit of a nap after a hot day out on the water. If you feel like you’d like a gorgeous dinner tonight, I would recommend reservations at Restaurante Rosetta. This stunning eatery is located inside an old villa and is literally dripping, inside and out, with greenery. The menu is unique and creative and is a fusion of traditional Mexican dishes with modern, international ingredients. It’s such a gorgeous interior you’ll be absolutely transported both by the food and the decor.

Lucha Libra

If your crew is the adventurous type, just down the street is the Arena México, where you can catch a Lucha Libre show almost every day of the week! Lucha Libre is Mexican Wrestling and even if you aren’t even the slightest bit of a wrestling or sports fan, going to these shows is soooo much fun. We’ve gone both with a tour group and on our own, and it’s a blast either way. Going on your own is much cheaper, as tickets are only about $25 USD but going with the group is a wonderful experience for first-timers. They teach you all about the sport’s history and why it has become such an important part of the Mexican identity.

Everywhere you go in Mexico City, you’ll see Lucha masks for sale and everything from t-shirts to souvenir magnets with famous wrestlers on them. So it’s good to find out what this is all about. It’s a fun group activity as it gets everyone talking. Even if you don’t speak a lick of Spanish, it’s so much fun to try to interpret the storylines and the moves and just sit back and be in awe of the absolute madness and amazing physical prowess this real athlete put on display!

Day 4 – A Day for the Arts in San Angel & Coyoacán

Our last day in Mexico City is about immersing ourselves in the city’s most artistic areas of the city; San Angel and Coyoacan. This is where Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera spent more of their lives and careers. The entire neighbourhood is steeped in vibrant creativity. We’ll start the day in San Angel, exploring the brilliant colonial architecture and amazing art scene, and then uber over to nearby Coyoacan, where we can walk in the footsteps of Frida Kahlo. San Angel is famous for its Saturday Art Market. But if you choose to arrive here on any other day, you’ll still find the neighbourhood to be an incredible place to find wonderful works of art!

Restaurante El Cardenal

Head to the best breakfast spot in San Angel, Restaurante El Cardenal, to start your morning. Restaurante El Cardenal is an institution in Mexico City that was founded in 1969! At El Cardenal, you can come and feel like you’re dining at your mother’s table. Their location in San Ángel is located inside an old colonial mansion and the gorgeous architecture make eating here a luxurious experience.

To start the perfect breakfast, begin with hot chocolate, not coffee! Their unique hot chocolate is made with famous Doña Oliva chocolate and is like drinking a cup of history. Hot chocolate originated in Mexico and was an essential part of the Aztec culture from 1400 AD. My favourite part about the experience of eating here was the pastry tray. When you come inside, a waiter brings you over an enormous tray of sweet pastries. And you can choose, with your own eyes, which pastry you want to start the meal right with. I went with the concha as I feel like it’s the perfect pairing with a hot chocolate. The rest of the menu is filled with traditional Mexican brunch options and honestly you can’t go wrong with any of them!

Carmen Church of San Ángel

As we make our way west towards the Plaza San Jacinto, quickly stop inside the old Carmelite church, just across from the restaurant. The church was built here in 1615 and it features some amazing Herrerian architecture. The courtyard makes for a wonderful photo op as you are surrounded by incredible Puebla tiles, fantastical domed rooms and beautiful greenery. Even if your group isn’t super religious, I love stopping in here just to admire the marvellous architecture and baorque art.

Walking into the church, the restrained architecture surrounding you highlights the incredible golden altar. Light frames the altar from either side, creating the most ethereal glow. While the rest of the building might be simpler in design, the altarpiece is pure baroque. Drama, glamour and gilding are everything that the baroque era brought, and we can see it here in leaps and spurts! Since today is all about art, this is a great spot to make a quick stop.

Saturday Art Market

If you come to San Angel on the weekend, you’ll be graced with the amazing Saturday Art Market. It is by far the most popular event in the area. The art on sale is both meant for the locals to enjoy as well as the tourists. Found on easels and leaning against the walls are works of art highlighting the beauty of the Mexican landscape and their vibrant culture. There were so many amazing artists of all different styles and mediums. 

In addition to paintings, this Plaza is also home to craftspeople. Here you can find artisan pottery, textiles and even clothing. While some of it is a bit touristy, there are also unique designers and artists. Prices tend to be a little more expensive here in San Angel, but the quality matches the cost. This is a great market to find some amazing souvenirs to bring home!

Art Galleries and Stores

If you opt to visit San Angel on any other day than Saturday, you can still find many handicraft shops open around the square throughout the week. They keep the spirit of the art market alive throughout the week. Shops like the Bazar San Ángel, María Bonita and Local México sell gorgeous handmade decor and art pieces for your home. The spirit of the art market lives on long past the weekend, so don’t feel like you’ll have missed it all if you can only visit during the week. Maria Bonita sells amazing pieces of art made by Mexican artists at very affordable prices. Their store is also a joy to walk through and feels absolutely transporting.

Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo

Wander through the back alleys of San Angel, north towards the incredible Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. This amazing feat of architecture was where Diego Rivera worked and lived alongside his wife, Frida Kahlo. The two homes are connected via the large walkway on the top floor. The entire design of the homes is symbolic of their love. So it really makes for a great stop for a future bride!

The museum leads you through both houses to see their studios, living spaces and a gorgeous rooftop view across the neighbourhood of San Angel. The house doesn’t take much time to explore, but the incredible architecture is worth seeing. Plus, if you’re a fan of Frida and Diego, this peeks into their private lives is unrivalled.

Coyoacan Market

By now, you’re no doubt starting to get hungry, so it’s time to hop into an Uber and head over to Coyacano. Start your introduction to Coyoacan outside the famous Mercado de Coyoacán! This market has stood here for decades, and if you look at the roofline, you’ll see that it’s more than one building pieced together. The newest part of the structure was built in the 1950s. But the original, much smaller marketplace was where Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera would come to shop for their famous dinner parties held at the Casa Azul.

El Jardín del Pulpo

Before entering the market’s interior, stop at the sidewalk entrance on the corner of Malintzin and Ignacio Allende where you’ll find El Jardín del Pulpo. El Jardín del Pulpo translates into ‘The Octopus’s Garden, ‘where you can indulge in Coyoacán’s best street seafood. While it might seem a little more expensive than regular street food, you’ll be eating such luxuries as lobster and langostino. You MUST give their GIANT shrimp cocktails a try!

Tostadas Coyoacan 

But the main reason for visiting this market is to try Tostadas Coyoacan! The lines can get pretty long at lunchtime, but it moves quickly and gives you time to scope out what you want to try. The shrimp ceviche tostadas with thick slices of avocado to cut the acidity are absolute perfection! If eating raw seafood is a little too adventurous for you, try their famous shredded chicken; simple, moist and flavourful! There are six different eating areas with bar-style seating, so you can almost always find somewhere to saddle up, even at the busiest time of day.

Barbacoa is another traditional dish to try in the Coyacán market. If you’re visiting on Saturdays and Sundays, find your war to El Borrego de Oro or ‘The Golden Sheep’ at the back of the market. The shreds of tender meat atop freshly made tortillas are absolute heaven.

Casa Azul

What most people come to Coyocan for is the Casa Azul, also known as the Frida Kahlo Museum. The Casa Azul was where Mexican artist Frida Kahlo grew up, became an artist, married, and even died. She lived there with her husband, Diego Rivera, and together the two of them transformed a simple home into an artist’s retreat. After her death, the artworks of Frida Kahlo became an international sensation, gaining notoriety more and more as time went on. A hidden genius being discovered after her death, like it so often goes. But Frida herself has become an icon and cultural phenomenon. It’s very important to book these tickets in advance, especially for a large group.

The museum is less of a simple art gallery and more like an inside look at her private world. Although there are a few paintings from both artists, the main focus of the Casa Azul is the couple’s Mexican folk art and being able to tour their home exactly as it was when they lived and worked inside it. Throughout the house, you’ll see their collections of pre-Hispanic artifacts, photographs, memorabilia, personal items, and more. You feel deeply connected with these artists by literally walking in their footsteps. The best part for a group of gals is Frida’s personal wardrobe that features pieces from the fashion icon. This is an unmissable experience for anyone interested in art or Frida herself. 

Bazar Artesanal Mexicano

If you’re travelling with a group of ladies, there is no doubt some shopping needs to be done! Just outside of the main square in Coyoacan is the Bazar Artesanal Mexicano. Inside the arched red gates, you step into a small courtyard always adorned with a myriad of artisanal decor. Throughout the two levels of tiny stalls crammed into different corners, you’ll find everything from traditional Mexican clothing complete with gorgeous embroideries, artisanal jewellery, various handicrafts, and pretty much everything you could want for souvenirs. 

The benefit of this artisan market is that it is on the small side but still has everything you could want. This means it’s a little less overwhelming, and you can more easily find what you’re looking for without. Plus, the prices here are slightly lower than in the more touristy Artisan Market outside the Historical Centre in the central city.

Corazón de Maguey

To end the day, make reservations at the Corazón de Maguey. This restaurant in the heart of Coyoacan is an absolute feast for the eyes and the stomach. Walking into the lively cantina, you’re overwhelmed by the bright red walls trimmed in myriad traditional Mexican kitchen implements used for decoration. Huge glass jugs used to store mezcal are stacked around the room, used almost as room dividers.

The restaurant specializes in traditional Mexican food served in HUGE portions. My recommendation is to order a whole bunch of different dishes and just share them between the entire table. It’s a great place to try out any food you didn’t get a chance to sample yet. Everything from red mole to beef tongue, stuffed chile ancho peppers, Oaxacan cheese and handmade tortillas are just some of the amazing dishes on the menu. Honestly, it’s one of the most stunning restaurants and the perfect place to end an action packed Mexico City Bachelorette trip!

Location

The neighbourhood of Roma is located south of the Paseo de la Reforma. And just below the Historic City Centre. Roma’s central location makes it an ideal place for tourists. From here you can easily reach all the best spots in the city in no time! The Colonial Roma is so large that the area has been divided into the North and South. Avenue Yucatan is the main street that separates Roma Norte and Roma Sur. The southern boundary of the Colonia Roma Sur is formed by the new Rio de la Piedad Street Viaduct.

History of Colonial Roma

Roma was one of the first upper-class neighbourhoods built in Mexico City. And I don’t just mean built in the 20th century. In 1529, the area that now makes up Roma was granted to Hernán Cortés by the Spanish Crown. During the colonial period, the Counts of Miravalle continued to control the area. This brought in more and more wealthy Spainairds into the neighbourhood. And with them the need for lavish residences.

Eduardo Walter Orrin

But it wasn’t until the 19th century that we start to see the creation of the Roma we find today. And we have the strangest person to thank for the overall look and feel of the neighbourhood. And that is Englishman Eduardo Walter Orrin. Orrin made his wealth in the Circus of all places. The Orrin Circus arrived in Mexico City in 1872 after touring the US and South America.

The circus was a HUGE success in Latin America. It was so popular that Orrin was able to afford to build a permanent venue. The circus operated inside, what is now the Teatro Blanquita in the Centro Histórico, for over 26 years! When Eduardo Orrin finally closed the circus, he turned his eyes on real estate development. And there was no place more promising than the area just south of the historic centre…what we know today as Roma!

The Creation of Roma

In the late 19th century, the wealthy elite of Mexico City were fleeing the crumbling Centro Histórico. The Centro Histórico was literally sinking into the ground and the old architecture was deteriorating rapidly. The aristocracy of Mexico City were looking for wide-open spaces in which to build their mansions. They dreamt of modern, colonial architecture. Orrin, whose circus operated in the historic centre, heard these cries. So Orrin went about purchasing land to the south.

The name “Roma” was also Orrin’s idea and came from Circo Romano (Roman Circus.) Although somewhat dissimilar to today’s circus, the Roman Circus was the inspiration for his own money-making enterprise. Even the streets around Roma were inspired by the circus. Many of the roads were named after the Mexican cities where the Orrin Circus had travelled. You’ll find Puebla, Oxaca, Colima, Córdoba, Morelia and more!

Porfirio Era

Porfirio Diaz and his government were also interested in aiding the creation of this upper-class neighbourhood. The president was enthralled with the European cities he visited on his travels. He longed to make Mexico City as impressive as those European cities he so badly envied. Diaz and his government provided rich and modern infrastructure to the new colonial. This included running water lines and sewers. Sewers were a truly modern convenience that, at the time, only was available in the Roma neighbourhood!

Roma soon became a European aristocratic enclave. Inspired by the elegant boulevards of Paris, the street in Roma were widened. And many of the main streets were installed with double rows of trees. Medians were built in the centre of the roads to provide relaxing pedestrian walkways. In the 1940s and 1950s, the area drew in the best of the best of Mexico City. Artists, businessmen and politicians arrived in style. Famous chilangos such as Álvaro Obregón, David Alfaro Siqueiros and former president Mexico Luis Echeverría all found themselves living within these “walls”. 

The Great Downfall of Roma

But in the 1950s, after WWII, the city began instituting lower rent regulations in these neighbourhoods. This act brought in more lower-class residents. The wealthier class railed against these newcomers, and many started to leave the area. More exclusive and luxurious areas like Polanco began to pop up. Drawing the remainder of the upper class out of Roma for good.

In addition to the new residents, taller buildings began to pop up around the colonial mansion. “Ruining” the look of the peaceful “town,” causing a further exodus. But the tall buildings weren’t just an eyesore; they were unknowing starting to disturb the ground below them.

This all came to a head on September 19th, 1985, at seven in the morning. An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 hit Mexico City. Thousands of buildings were levelled, and over 10,000 people lost their life. In Roma alone, 472 buildings were partially or entirely collapsed. The neighbourhood fell into complete disrepair. The population declined from 95,000 inhabitants in 1970 to 35,000 in 1995.

Reconstruction efforts were slow in these lower-class neighbourhoods. Regulations were put into place that no new apartment buildings could be constructed or older constructions adapted. This was to ensure the area remained intact until it could be repaired. But, by happy accident, this ended up preserving the remaining historic buildings for future residents and travellers.

The Renaissance of Roma

In the last 10 years, the area has started to slowly become more and more gentrified. We are witnessing the rebirth and renaissance of Colonial Roma. But things have been a bit slower in Roma Sur. This part of town still shows the scars of the earthquake. But with those scars, comes the preservation of the traditional way of life. There are more mom-and-pop restaurants, open for generations around here. Marketplaces that the town has grown around instead of the other way around. There is no doubt, Roma Sur feels more like the real heart of the old colonia.

Where to Stay

Airbnb

If you’d like to stay in Roma Sur, there are fewer options than in the north part of the neighbourhood. Airbnb offers many low-cost options in this area of town, with rooms for as little as $50-$70 a night for an entire apartment. But you should never forget that Airbnb has been slightly problematic in Mexico City. You are causing rent inflation and apartment shortages for locals. If you want to use Airbnb, try to look for a listing where the host does not have multiple properties. This suggests that they are not just a multi-unit proprietor who could even be an international owner.

Look for a listing from someone who lives in the neighbourhood but is just looking to make some money on their unit when they aren’t in town. Also, be sure to do your best to give as much of your time and money into the neighbourhood. To ensure you are continuing to support the hyper-local community.

Ignacia $$$

Ignacia Guest House is technically located in Roma Norte but is just on the edge of the Southern borders. Under the purple blossoms of the Jacaranda tree lining the streets, you will be welcomed home. The house was originally an old 20th-century mansion that has been transformed into just six elegant suites. Since there are so few rooms, everyone who stays here feels like family.

Each suite is designed differently, blending history and Mexican artisan tradition with contemporary design. In fact, Ignacia Guest House has been internationally acclaimed for its interior design, architecture, and restoration. Book well in advance as the rooms are highly coveted by anyone in the know who visits Mexico City.

Hotel Boutique Roma 191

Hotel Roma 191 is a gorgeous boutique hotel specializing in elegance and comfort. It wanted to harness the spirit and history of various famous artists. They created six unique rooms inspired by those artists’ work. The result is one of the most unique and relaxing places to stay in Roma Sur. With only six rooms in the entire hotel, this truly feels like a homey environment.

Le Babüin

The best place to start the day is with a good cup of coffee. Head to the southernmost part of the neighbourhood to Le Babüin cafe. This adorable coffee shop, named after the baboon in their logo, is a perfect slice of morning cheer. The staff are so friendly, and the caffeine that drips out of the espresso machines is first class. The sign above their door translates into the quote, “Everyone should believe in something. I think I’ll have another coffee.” Love it.

Ecoducto Río Piedad 

Grab your coffee to go and walk south along C. Chilpancingo until you can see the big highway ahead. “A highway?” You might think. “Really? That’s where we’re headed next.” And yes, but there is something extraordinary about this particular part of the Mexico City roadway. Walking halfway across the large overpass, stop in the middle of the road. Here you’ll see a long, plant-incrusted walkway called the Ecoducto Río Piedad.

A Living Purifier

If you’ve ever travelled to New York, you’ll have heard of the high-line. A 1.45-mile-long elevated green park created on a former New York Central Railroad. Well, this is the same kind of concept here in Mexico City. This pedestrian path is surrounded on both sides by trees and aquatic plants. You’ll see people out for a run or walking their dogs. All the while meandering along atop one of the busiest highways in the city. The entire path extends from Chilpancingo metro to Monterrey Avenue with over 4,800 square meters of vegetation dotted across the path.

But the Ecoducto isn’t just a pretty pathway; it has an essential purpose. This is a recovered public space, with a system that cleans the polluted water out of the Piedad River. The water is piped in, and the living ecosystem atop the cement is fed by the water and purifies it in the process. The entire system captures 50 tons of carbon per year. And pumps out about 1% of the drainage water in Mexico City. While that might not seem like a lot, it is a step in the right direction. Hopefully, in the future, they will be able to create more of these beautiful systems that serve the environment and the community.

Parroquía de la Divina Providencia

Head out of the Ecoducto via the next overpass and continue north along C. Manzanillo. This leisurely walk with your coffee provides one of the best examples of the simple beauty of the neighbourhood. The emerald green canopy of leafy trees above you protects you from the bright morning sun. Locals mull about getting their morning groceries or calling on the local tamale biker.

Turn left on Quintana Roo to reach the humble Parroquía de la Divina Providencia. This neighbourhood church is a perfect example of Spanish Revival architecture in the Colonia Roma Sur. It is such a sweet little church, often with lovely ladies sitting outside the front gates. They sit outside, selling trinkets to raise money for the parish. An excellent place to drop in and study the fantastic murals inside if there isn’t a service going on. In such a modest church, it’s incredible to see the floor-to-ceiling mural painted on the back of the church’s nave. 

Serenna Restaurante & Café Gourmet

Head back to C. Manzanillo you reach Tlaxcala street. On the corner is this Alice in Wonderlandesque restaurant. Serenna Restaurante & Café Gourmet is famous for its hanging flowers that drape the restaurant’s entire exterior. The cafe is inspired by the TV show ‘Gossip Girl‘ and its main character Serena van der Woodsen! Truly one of those oddities you would never expect to find in Mexico City, but here it is! Personally, I like sitting out on the patio with one of their gourmet coffees. And prefer to save my stomach for brunch at our following location. But there is no doubt; this place is an Instagrammers dream!

Borona Lonchería

Walk one block north to Aguascalientes and head inside Borona Lonchería. Borona Lonchería pops up along a bit of slice of businesses along Aguascalientes street. The small cafe has an incredible brunch menu. Their thick-cut french toast with fresh berries is definitely droll-worthy or my favourite, the Chilaquiles con huevos. If you prefer, you can also peruse their to die pastry cabinet to try a little bit of everything. This place is pet-friendly, so often, you’ll find townies with their furry friends parked up along the patio. And if you’re like me and miss your dog when you’re travelling, this place is your opportunity to sneak a few pets in

El Hidalguense

If you’re in town on Friday, Saturday or Sunday do you need to check out El Hidalguense! El Hidalguense is one of the top traditional Mexican restaurants in the entire city. The restaurant’s classic, old-world interior design makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time. And the dishes are made to bring your taste buds right back there with you. The restaurant specializes in barbacoa (barbeque) lamb tacos which send anyone drooling upon entering the restaurant.

This restaurant is only open on the weekends because the process takes all week to ensure the meat is perfectly cooked. The method of preparation dates all the way back to pre-Columbian times. They begin by digging a hole in the ground and covering it with heated stones. The stones heat the hole for an entire day before the core temperate is hot enough to cook the meat.

After this, the prepared sheep is wrapped in maguey leaves. The leaves give the meat insulation from the hot stones and flavour the meat while it cooks. The oven is then covered in the same leaves and a layer of earth. A fire is lit on top, and the meat is left to cook for around 12 hours or more. The result is incredible and a must–order from El Hidalguense. The atmosphere here is like walking into a huge family party, that has already gotten underway. Families gather to share large platters of slow-cooked meat. Even visitors like you will feel like family by the end of the meal.

Mercado Medellin

Now that you’re all fueled up, it’s time to venture into the most important spot in Roma Sur, the Mercado Medellin. There is no doubt that this market is the community’s beating heart. Mercado Medellín, or Medellin Market, is my favourite farmer’s market in all of Mexico City. Not only is the marketplace large enough to feature everything you’d want in one place, it somehow still retains that friendly neighbourhood atmosphere. The market never feels too crowded and definitely not like it’s only there for the tourists. Shopping here makes you feel like a local and allows you to experience an authentic Mexican market.

History

The Mercado Medellín is easily identifiable by its red, green and yellow geometric painted exterior. Lookout on one side for a huge, decorated multicolour mural. This marketplace has stood here for over 150 years. When the market was first established, it was in the centre of an immigrant community in Mexico City. Colombians, Cubans, Brazilian, Venezuelans and even Jewish immigrants all found themselves in the middle of the city in a neighbourhood now called Roma Sur.

The immigrants would import food and goods from their home country to sell here in their new home in Mexico City. Up until the earthquake of 1985, Jewish Mexicans owned and operated the market. But after the quake, its ownership passed hands over to the Cubans, therein earning the market its nickname; “Little Havana.”

Por Siempre Vegana

Right across the street from the market is one of the precious few vegan taquerias in the city. Por Siempre Vegana or Forever Vegan, located along Coahuila Street, prides itself on making traditional-style Mexican tacos without the meat! Being a vegan visitor in Mexico City is definitely getting more and more accessible over the years and places like this are the reason! Even if you’re a meat-eater it’s worth checking out. It’s impressive to see the techniques and ingredients they use to create these incredible dishes.

Tienda Trama

Further east along Coahuila Street is the joyful interiors of Tienda Trama. This shop is cooperative, meaning that everything you find here is made by a series of different local craftspeople and designers. So even if a smaller producer couldn’t afford to open their own shop, they can still sell their products direct to the customers. You can find everything from embroideries, ceramics, hand-made contemporary arts, kids’ clothes, and beautiful jewelry. All locally made and giving back to the community.

I’m obsessed with buying mugs everywhere I travel. They feel like the perfect “souvenir” as it’s something I use every day. Pulling a mug out of the cabinet makes me so happy as I remember my travels I took to find it. A mug with one of their custom coffee blends makes the best gift to bring home! It has local flare without feeling too much like a cliche souvenir.

Garden Huerto Roma Verde

Continuing east along Coahuila, walk until you reach the large intersection at Avenue Yucatan.. Across the street, on the east side, you will be able to spot a bright blue column. This giant structure is made of old water jugs that form the monumental entrance to the Huerto Roma Verde. Huerto Roma Verde is a cultural centre made from the recovered property once destroyed by the 1985 earthquake. The land was abandoned for 27 years and used as a dumping ground. But Paco Ayala, who initiated the project, saw the 8,000 square feet as an opportunity. He saw the space as a place for regrowth and environmental education through art.

The self-managed community found inside these walls was created by grassroots environmental activists. It began as a small shared vegetable garden. Where residents who lived in small apartments without outdoor space could come and grow their own fresh food. From there, it grew to have a storage tower to collect rainwater, a recycling centre for solid waste and even several farm animals! Their aim is to focus on sustainability and promote the development of communities that are integrated into their local environments.

Much of the space is designed to be an urban garden with mind-bending art sculptures created within the living environment. While you can wander the space and just appreciate the artworks, you can also stop into the various pop-up businesses. They sell everything from organic cosmetics, vegan desserts and fresh coffee. There is also a small amphitheatre that frequently hosts musical performances. So be sure to poke your head around to see what you can find!

Mercado 100

On the corner of Orizaba and C. Antonio M. Anza, just down the street, is the Mercado 100. The Mercado 100 is held every Sunday. It is one of the most unique markets you’ll find anywhere in the city. What makes the Mercado 100 so special is that they aim to be an ethical marketing alternative for organic, ecological and local producers. The market has been running for the past 8 years, and highlights over 50 producers from all over Mexico.

While there is lots of local produce for sale here, you can also buy packaged products. Everything from; honey, vanilla, sauces, chocolate, spices and more. These are wonderful things to buy to bring a slice of Mexico home with you. There are also local artisans selling their wares and handmade goods. Plus the street food, especially the vegan variety, is always incredibly fresh!

Benito Juárez Elementary School

Take a walk south down Jalapa Street, where you find the great Benito Juárez Elementary School. Benito Pablo Juárez García was the first president of Mexico who was of indigenous origin and an important figure in the history of Mexico City. This is one of the oldest public schools in the city. The school is an incredible example of the Spanish Revival style of architecture.

Tamales Doña Emi

If you are craving a snack, hop over to Tamales Doña Emi. If you’ve never managed to be up early in the morning to catch the street tamale vendor, this is a great place to try tamales! There are dozens of different varieties here to try. They have all the traditional fillings and some more eclectic and modern variations as well. Something for everyone.

Tepeji #22

Turn west along Tepeji street until you find #22 Tepeji. This unassuming street is home to the exterior shooting location of the house featured in the award-winning film ‘Roma‘ by Alfonso Cuaron. In addition to this famous sight, if you look right across the street, you’ll see the real-life childhood home of the director. A plaque at #22 Tepeji commemorates this house as the film’s shooting location.

Roma and Mexico City in 1970

The film ‘Roma‘ is a must-watch for anyone visiting Mexico City. It follows the life of a live-in Mixteco housekeeper of a middle-class family. The Mixtecos, are the indigenous peoples of Mexico inhabiting the region known as La Mixteca. It is Cuarón’s semi-autobiographical take on life in the Colonia Roma in the 1970s. The film’s backdrop portrays the tensions over the land that is Colonia Roma. It shows student protestors fighting for the democratization of education. These freedom fighters were also asking for control of the university budget to be handed over to the students and teachers. They wanted political freedom for workers and peasants and quality education for everyone! They also fought for greater cultural diversity but sadly, their efforts resulted in the Corpus Christi Massacre of 1971. Nearly 120 protesters were killed, among them a fourteen-year-old boy. A sad but harsh reality of Mexico City’s history.

Cine Tonalá

If this visit to the set of ‘Roma’ inspired you to watch more Mexican Cinema, head over to Cine Tonalá. ‘Tonalá’ is a Nahuatl word from the ancient Aztec language. It means “the place where the sun comes out” as a cinema so often brings light to our lives. Cine Tonalá is a bar, restaurant, and film auditorium that runs only independent movies. At least one of the films is always a local, Mexican production. Ask or check online to see if films airing are either in English with Spanish subtitles or have English subtitles. It’s a wonderful place to support if you are able to.

Lulu Gallery

If indie movies aren’t your thing, head over to the western edge of Roma Sur. Here you can pop your head into the fresh exhibitions at Lulu Gallery. Lulu is an independent, Mexico City-based art project space. The gallery specializes in artworks created out of interesting materials and forms. While some galleries feature work that tends to be more about the message than form, this gallery flips that concept on its head. What you’re left with are some really really cool works of art that draw you in and yet don’t ask too much of your brain. Which I always think is a great way to approach art.

Comedor de los Milagros

To end your evening in Roma Sur, head up to the Comedor de los Milagros. The amazing communal party atmosphere inside is palpable. Comedor de los Milagros is a Latin American market, where you can try food from seven different Latin American countries. There are seven restaurant booths surrounding the wide-open room where guests dine on long, communal picnic benches. The food is representative of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Peru, Venezuela and Mexico. Peruvian ceviche, Argentinian steak, and even a slew of vegan options as well can all be found inside!

The upper balcony is covered in wall murals and living plants to give the vibe of being outside! It’s the most lively place to be at night, but on the weekend be prepared to wait in line as it’s one of the hottest places in town. But well worth the effort to get inside!

It’s really not that cold!

If you’re from a colder climate (like me – I’m from Canada), the winters in Paris are laughable. It seldom gets below 35°F or 2°C. Check the chart below for winter temperature predictions for Paris. For those of you from warmer climates, you might find this temperature a little chilly. But just make that an excuse to buy yourself a cute new winter wardrobe. Make being out in the cold something fun instead of something frustrating. In November and December, there is actually more rain than snow, so be sure to bring along a good umbrella. In January and February, there is more snow which creates a gorgeous white dusting across the city! There is honestly something so beautiful about the snowfall and especially when it’s across a town as beautiful as Paris!

The Lack of Tourists

If you’ve ever been to Paris in the summer or even the spring these days, you’ll see the telltale lines which seem to sweep all around the city. Paris is filled to bursting and getting into your favourite restaurant or museum always entails a lengthy wait. But in the wintertime, the tourists, scared of the “cold” stay away. And I’ll take it. And you will too! In the winter you can walk down famous streets and find them almost empty. That crowd around the Mona Lisa, maybe won’t disappear but it will be much less intense. Overall, the wintertime brings this peaceful atmosphere to a city which often gets a bad reputation as being rude, crowded and smelly!

About That Smell…

One of the biggest things I hear time and time again from people on their way back from Paris is about the smell! It smells terrible, it really does. Not everywhere, of course, but Paris, as a big city, has a big garbage problem. And garbage, along with dog pee (another prevalent issue on the streets) is responsible for the horrible smell. In the summer, the heat amplifies these smells to a thousand! But in the winter, you’ll barely notice the scent. I never had this experience when in the city except perhaps for the occasional steamy grate near the metro.

Accommodation & Airfare are Cheaper!

With this lack of tourists comes cheaper accommodation and flight prices. There are almost always flight deals during the winter months to entice visitors into the city. Take them up on that offer! Except for the dates right around Christmas, you can almost ways find a significant reduction in airfare and hotels. Prices seem to begin to increase after Easter and start going down after American Thanksgiving.

Use Those Savings for Something Special

There is only one thing better than a hot bath on a cold day. A trip to the spa! There are dozens of fantastic resorts in Paris which cater to locals who want an intimate experience in those colder months. These spas come with steam rooms, swimming pools, saunas and of course, lengthy massages. It’s the perfect way to wind down (which is what a vacation is for after all) but also to warm you up from the inside out if you’ve spent an unusually chilly day outside.

Most Big Ticket Attractions are Inside

Paris truly has the best collection of museums in the world. In such a condensed space, you’ll find hundreds of different places you’ll need to visit! And the best part, they’re all inside. Going to the Louvre in summer and winter is exactly the same experience, except for the number of tourists. Notre Dame is particularly stunning in the winter before Christmas when the entirety of the nave is decorated for the holiday season.

Visiting the underground catacombs in the winter, when the chill in the air is replaced with an oddly warm underground warmth is a truly remarkable experience. Even Versaille, which boasts some of the longest lines, is a great place to visit in the winter. If you’re lucky enough to be there when it snows, you’ll be treated to one of the most unique perspectives on this illustrious palace. And the rest of the enormous tour is all inside.

Walking around the city and seeing the incredible French architecture everywhere you look is an unmissable part of the Parisian experience. But the fact that you can duck into a museum or indoor attraction every few minutes is a great relief for anyone who doesn’t like to be outside for too too long. You can’t walk very far without finding something which will catch your attention.

Embrace Cafe Culture

Another way of escape the cold, if you are getting a bit too chilly on your wanderings, is to duck into one of the many cafes which Paris is so famous for. If you’re a millennial, it seems impossible not to have escaped the lasting impression which the film ‘Amelie’ had on our young minds. Cafes in Paris are THE place to be to soak in the local ambience and sip smooth coffee. Winter means it’s ok to pack on those pounds and hide them under layers. So indulge yourself in the pastries which these cafes serve up by the dozen! Vacation is no time to retrain yourself, have a little fun and satisfy your taste buds!

Discover Covered Passages

Most Metro stations will stop off underground. Inside these little underground passageways are covered arcades and secret entrances to some top attractions. The Louvre’s default (and extremely crowded) entrance is outside near the glass pyramids. But most people don’t know it can also be accessed underground, without ever having to go outside, directly from the Metro station. And in fact, this entrance is FAR less busy since it’s not out in the open where people like to take their pictures. In addition to hidden entries, you’ll also find underground shopping centres. Paris’ covered passages were built during the early 19th century, sort of like Europe answer to North American malls. The oldest of these passages is the Passage des Panoramas which dates back to 1799! During the wintertime, the window displays are lushly styled, and at Christmas, they are a feast for the eyes!

Skip the Noisy Construction

In an old city like Paris, construction is almost constant. If you’ve ever been woken up by noisy jack-hammering on your relaxing vacation, you know how annoying this can be. But in the winter, when it’s colder, it’s much harder to do construction work, and therefore this noise is significantly reduced. If you’ve ever dreamt of visiting a specific attraction only to show up and see its covered ins scaffolding you’ll know how disappointing this can be. Sure this might be unavoidable, but in the winter you’ll have a better chance of it not being under construction.

You Avoid Smokers

There are lots of smokers in Paris. It’s one of those cities where this vice is still hanging on. In the summer, everyone on the street seems to have a cigarette in their hands. If you’re like me and hate the smell of this stuff, then you’ll find that in the winter, fewer people are willing to take those smoke breaks, to avoid standing out in the cold.

People Are Just Nicer

I’ve you’re a resident of a famous tourist city, anywhere in the world, you’ll know what it’s like to be invaded by hoards of tourists every summer. In Toronto, right in the centre of downtown, the streets seem to erupt with tourists. And while it’s great for the economy and brings in lots of exciting events and festivals, it means transit is more crowded, streets are filled with slow walkers (my personal bane), and pretty much everything has a line. In Paris, it’s no different, so its no surprise to find that locals are just a little bit grumpier in the summer when they can’t move about their own city.

The French already have a bad rep for being rude, so add the heat and humidity of summer on top of the crowds, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. But in the winter, people seem more relaxed. More accepting and inviting. You made an effort to come here at a time when others don’t. There appears to be a silent appreciation which they give tourists around wintertime, which I think is just peachy.

The Christmas Markets!

Despite the week of actual Christmas being pricey, the early parts of December are still pretty affordable. And with December comes Christmas markets! Europe does Christmas better than anyone else, and Christmas markets are one of the most beautiful ways to enjoy the holiday season. Wander the wooden huts of the market outdoors under the watchful eye of Paris’ splendid architecture. Visiting a Christmas market is one of the best places to do your Christmas shopping. You can find such unique treasures which your friends and family will just gush over! There are markets all over the city and even one at the base of the Eiffel Tower, what better ambience could you ask for?

Christmas Lights & Decor

Once again, this only applies if you’re visiting before, or just after Christmas, but the Christmas decorations around the city during the holidays are honestly magical. I freak out over fairy lights and Christmas trees and travelling anywhere in Europe during the holidays means this in spades!

Winter Sales

Many many people come to Paris to shop. And with good reason, Paris is the fashion captial of the world, and some of the most luxurious brands have their flagship stores here. Even if you’re not into those uber expensive brands, the dribble down effect is real, and many extremely affordable local brands also have some fantastic shops here. In the winter, there are government-mandated sales in Paris where stores cut their prices down on almost everything! This usually happens between early January and early Feb. The famous Galeries Lafayette is one of the best shopping malls to hit up to find rows and rows of deals all in one easy to find place! And the best part – it’s indoors!

Winter Fashion

Being the fashion capital of the world, means you’re going to see just how good winter can look on the French. And you might even be able to grab some of this style for yourself! Learning how to dress stylishly for the winter is a skill, and there’s nowhere better to learn that in France. Sit at your favourite cafe, and people watch. Study their looks, fabulous coats, boot and hat combinations as they walk by. You can spend an entire afternoon doing this, much better than rifling through a magazine.

Festival of Lights

From November 18th to January 19th, the Jardin des Plantes (Garden of Plants) hosts an incredible exhibition of enormous lanterns set amongst the greenery of the garden. Each one is designed to look like a different part of the ocean, which is a nice juxtaposition outdoors on land. It’s a fantastical place to explore for adults and kids alike. This exhibition is only on during the winter when the plants have all died out and yet they are interested in still getting visitors to come out to see the rest of the gardens.

Vin Chaud

France is known for its wines. But what you might not know is that during the wintertime they indulge in vin chaud (hot wine). This is similar to the North American tradition of mulled wine but made in a French fashion. It’s served at most cafes and markets places and makes for the perfect drink to keep you all warm and fuzzy as the sun sets at night.

Parisian Hot Chocolate

If you’re not someone who drinks alcohol or are travelling with children, there is another traditional beverage you can’t miss, and that’s hot chocolate. While it might seem like a childish treat, Chocolat Chaud in France is rich, decadent and is made from wonderfully high-quality chocolate! It’s a fantastic treat for young and old alike. And just doesn’t take the same on a hot summer day. No, as the snow falls, there is nothing better in your hand than a cup of this creamy liquid!

Roasted Chesnuts

Chestnuts have long been a staple of the Parisian winter season, and vendors can be found on nearly every street corner selling the warm, sweet treats. The chestnuts are roasted over open flames, creating a smoky fragrance that entices passerby. Taking a break from exploring the city to enjoy a handful of hot, fresh chestnuts is a timeless tradition for both Parisians and visitors alike. Whether enjoyed as a snack or paired with a warm mulled wine, winter roasted chestnuts are a true delight of the season.

Winter Comfort Food

Every country has its own way of dealing with the cold, and in France, they did it through the cusine. Winter foods in France are rich and hearty. They warm you from the inside out. They are full of fatty meats, heavy starches and sweets mixed in for good measure. Stews, cassoulets and confits are all just some of the marvellous foods you’ll find on the menu in the winter. No one would imagine serving a casserole in the heat of the summer, so getting a chance to try these fantastic meals is something you’ll only get in the winter!

Winter is Easy in Disneyland Paris

Disneyland Paris might not be on every traveller’s list, but if you’re a Disney-head like me, you’ll know it should be. Like almost every Disneyland in the world, one of the most significant downsides of visiting is the crowds. But in the winter, you’ll find the lines are almost twice as short as any other time in the year. And the fact that half the rides are indoors is a great incentive to ensure you’re not out in the cold all day. Around Christmastime, the entire park is decorated for the holiday season in magical baubles and sparkling garlands which just amplifies the already enchanting atmosphere.

Cheaper Prices on Famous Entertainment

With fewer tourists, come discounted ticket prices on almost everything to incentivize both locals and tourists alike to attend shows. Palais Garnier, one of the most famous architectural masterpieces in the city, hosts opera and ballet performances all year and during the wintertime, you can find tickets for a fraction of the cost. Even try to go up on the day and see what’s left, and you might find yourself with front row seats for the price of the nose bleeds. Even if you don’t know anything about the performance, being inside this historic building and seeing all its luxury and elegance is entertainment enough.

History

The market was first opened in 1615! Back then, it was a traditional wholesale fish market. Today, is are still lots of fish being sold, but unlike Tsukiji Market where it is almost solely fish, this market sells everything from fresh fruit, pastries, cooking utensils, pickles, dried seafood, knives, regional specialties, desserts and more!

Location & Access

The market is situated between Teramachi and Shinmachi streets and runs parallel to Shijo Street. The market is easily accessible by public transportation. The closest subway station is Karasuma or Shijo station on the Karasuma or Tozai subway lines. You can also reach the market by taking a bus to the Nishiki Market or Shijo Kawaramachi bus stop.

What to Eat?

Tsukemono

Tsukemono (Japanese pickles) are to be found all over the place. Barrels of colourful veggies sit inside salty brine and are a popular side dish to be served with side rice or as an everyday snack. These pickles are also a very important part of the kaiseki portion of a Japanese tea ceremony in Kyoto. Samples are available as you walk through the market so if there’s anything you’re curious about don’t be shy to ask. A few words in Japanese will win over the vendor, and he will be glad to help you experience his dishes.

Warabimochi

Another favourite treat inside Nishiki Market is Warabimochi. Mochikiya sells jelly-like cubes of green tea flavoured mochi. Mochi is pounded rice which has been slightly sweetened and mixed with matcha (green tea). The mochi at Mochikiya is considered some of the best in the world. It is soft, fragrant, and a delicate snack. I think for me, it needs to be slightly sweeter, it’s a still a little too bitter for my North American palette, but some people go nuts for this stuff.

Tofu Doughnuts

For me, one of the best snacks here is there soy doughnuts! Kyoto Tofu Fujino’s Konnamonja sells light and healthy doughnut made from soy and covered with a variety of toppings. I chose the brown sugar and soybean flour flavour which was amazing. Sweet and airy! You could eat at a high top table, and people watch while downing a few dozen of these delicious treats.

Perilla

Another wonderful things to bring home with you with freshly ground chili power, made from perilla. Perilla is a combination of basil and Szechwan pepper and gives any dish a unique zing! There are a myriad of other spices for sale in the market too, and these are a great souvenir to bring home to add a bit of Japanese flavour to your meals.

Fish cakes

Throughout the market, you’ll see vendors featuring a plethora of fried food on sticks. These are mostly fresh fish cakes in a variety of flavours. The different ingredients are placed on a stick, dipped in a wet flour mixture and then deep-fried. Fillings range from traditional fish paste, mochi, cheese and even eel.

Unagi

Undoubtedly, one of the best kinds of fish in Nishiki market is their barbequed fresh water ell, or unagi. The eel is cooked over charcoals and then covered in a sweet, kabayaki sauce. While the fish can be very expensive you can buy bit size squewers on the street for only a few dollars. Great to sample if you’ve tried it before.

Tako Tomago

One of the strangest things you might see across the market looks like something from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. These tiny octopuses are called tako tomago. They are baby octopus’, stuffed with a tiny boiled quail egg and covered in a sweet, red sauce. They look strange but taste delicious – if you’re brave enough to give them a try.

Wasabi

Bright green, bark-like barnacles sit in water and might look like modern art but this is actually fresh wasabi! Some of the best sushi restaurants in Kyoto get their fresh wasabi from here. While this might not be something you want to buy, they are worth looking at and same sellers offer fresh wasabi to try – just be warned , it’s very spicy.

Konpeito

A traditional Japanese candy called Konpeito is a popular souvenir and snack for many people who come to the market. The brightly coloured candy is covered in little bubbles and although it’s synonymous with Japan, it originally came from Portugal and introduced to the Japanese in 1546. Although not the tastiest, they make very pretty souvenirs.

Strawberry Mochi

Another one of my favourite treats are mochi strawberries. Inside there is a little bit of red bean filling which adds to the overall taste. They are sweet and soft and best of all, portable so that you can grab a few for your picnic and head on out!

Roasted Chestnuts

A great dish to try in the Fall are the roasted chestnuts. Known as kuri they can be roasted, boiled, steamed, candied or dried but as always delicious!

Fresh Baumkuchen

Over the years, traditional German food has become even more popular in Japan than in Germany. And that is Baumkuchen. Baumkuchen, or “log cake,” is made by brushing a thin cake batter onto a rotating spit. After each layer cooks, another is added onto a ring of wafer thin layers of delicious cake. In Japan, it is often flavoured with macha powder, made locally in Kyoto.

What to Buy

Japanese knives

The market has a wide variety of knives and kitchenware that are handmade by local craftsmen. Japan is notable for their knives as some of the best in the world and the market place is always a good spot to find some at great prices.

Lacquerware

Kyoto is known for its traditional crafts, and one of its most famous is Japanese lacquerware. The city has a long history of lacquerware production, and Nishiki Market is the perfect place to purchase high-quality, authentic pieces.

Ceramics

In addition to lacquerware, ceramics are another amazing item to pick up in the marketplace. Tea cups are especially popular with both artisans and tourists and make for a great gift to bring home.

Sake

The Tsunoki liquor store inside the Market is where you can sample different types of sake from around Japan.

Places to Visit

Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine

At the end of the market, there is one last place you need to visit before leaving, and that is at the Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine. Outside the shrine is the golden Cow Statue. He represents the kami (the spirit) of good fortune and prosperity. Many people pet the cow in the hopes of getting wish. But where you pet the cow is very important. For instance, petting the belly will convey your wish for a safe pregnancy, petting the head will help wish for a cure for headaches and so on.

Natural Springs

If you notice a foul odour, don’t run away. This is coming from the natural spring water that flows up from over 30 meters below. It’s safe to drink, and many people think it has special powers and it is pretty common to see people coming with water bottles to bring some home.

Shrine to Childbirth

Towards the back there is a small shrine where you can pray for a safe childbirth. There were three babies coming into my life, so I stopped here, bought three small charms for each child and prayed for them. Months later, they call came into this world safe and sound. I won’t say it’s due to us but it can’t have done any harm. The shrine is especially beautiful in the evening when it is illuminated by the lights of the lanterns which hang outside. If you’re into food or even just want to people watch for a little bit, the Nishiki Market in Kyoto is a must see place!

Although some of these markets can be a bit touristy, their appeal to foreigners and locals alike is for a reason. They are incredible places to visit with some of the best food in the entire city. Along the famous tourist drag, Las Ramblas, you’ll find one of Europe’s largest and most fantastic food market: La Boqueria. La Boqueria Market is the perfect place to get the best sense of what Catalan cuisine and culture is made up of.

Hours and Access

The easiest way to access the market is to take the Green Metro line to Liceu Station, and from there it’s a short one minute walk over to the market. The market is open from 8 am till 8:30 pm Monday to Saturday (closed on Sundays). While you can visit anytime during those hours, I highly recommend coming early in the morning or later in the evening. Hundreds of tourists pass through the gates every day, and your experience will be all the richer if you manage to arrive when it’s much less busy. Arriving the morning also means you can see the vendors coming and going, loading up their stalls with the catch or pick of the day.

History

Opened in 1217 as an open-air market, the first Boqueria was located right outside the old city walls. Since it was outside the official city of Barcelona, farmers saved on the taxes city dwellers had to pay on their goods. It was also more easily accessible for merchants travelling in and out of the countryside as they didn’t have to venture as far into the city. As the market grew, it was relocated in 1827 to Las Ramblas. La Boqueria is derived from the Catalan word “boc” meaning “goat” since goats were often popular meat sold at the market.

The marker is divided into sections based on what the vendors are selling which makes it easy to explore. With over 200 vendors, you’ll be thankful for this organization, especially if you’re looking for something in particular.

Tips

Before entering the market, remember to keep in mind that this is a pickpocket hotspot. Barcelona itself is very famous for being a city with a high percentage of theft and in the market where it can be wall to wall people, it’s easy to brush up against someone and carefully steal their wallet without anyone noticing. Keep your money out of public view when paying and always be sure to keep your purse or knapsack closed (or even better – locked). I never had an encounter with someone I thought was a pickpocket but I was also very aware of my surroundings at all times, and I think that helps you avoid being a target to start with.

Make sure you visit an ATM before arriving. Although some vendors take credit cards, it’s not worth the fuss and time it takes to process and most widely prefer cash. Speaking a bit of Spanish, or even better Catalan, will go far with winning you some favour with the vendors. They all speak a lot of English as they deal with tourists on a daily basis but since you’re visiting their country it’s always nice to end the conversation with “Moltes gràcies”.

The towering grand iron entrance, topped with the iconic stained glass in Gaudi style leads you into a world of heady scents and brilliant colours! Vendors walk by carrying sopping wet fish, barrels of brightly coloured exotic fruits, bushels of raw nuts and freshly baked pastries.

El Pinotxo

If you arrive early enough or just happen to see a free table, don’t miss El Pinotxo. This tapas bar at the front of the market is so popular with tourists and locals alike that there rarely is a table in sight. But if you don’t mind waiting or managed to snag a free stool at the bar, you’ll be in luck since this place as some of the most fantastic tapas in Barcelona. One of their famous breakfast options is a plate of garbanzo beans with fresh blood sausage. Don’t let the name “blood sausage” put you off; it is absolutely delicious.

If El Pinotxo is full try a seat at El Quim, another fantastic cafe selling outstanding breakfast plates. A traditional Catalan dish to try is fried baby squid atop a freshly cooked egg. The combination of fresh seafood and the creamy, rich egg is a wonderful explosion of flavour.

When you first enter the market, it’s good to do a quick lap before settling in on what you want to buy. There are so many stalls, often with many selling similar items so doing an initial lap will help you gauge the prices and find the best deal.

The stalls at the very front of the market, closest to Las Ramblas, are decidedly marked up since they are the most visible to tourists who don’t want to explore the entire market and would rather just poke their head inside. The rest of the market might not be as cheap as smaller less popular locations, but it’s by no means exclusively for the rich and offers great deals if you know where to look. 

Fruit

A freshly squeezed fruit juice is the perfect travel companion for you as your wander around stall to stall. These juices are legendary, both in person and all over Instagram. These come in a variety of flavours, and their vibrant colours and taste help wake you up in the morning.  My favourite is the papaya mixed with whatever you fancy. The colour it makes is to die for.

One of the best tips for visiting the market is to plan a picnic after your visit. Find a spot in the city you wanted to experience for a more extended period and camp out on a bench with your treasure trove of goodies.

Olives

Olives are plentiful throughout the market. Sitting lazily in baths of rich olive oil. There are all sorts of different varieties, and you can mix and match in a small take away container to enjoy later. Olive trees have sustained the people of Catalonia for millennia and there are over 54 different kinds of olive trees across Catalonia. Olive oil is also something that Catalonia excels in and is the perfect gift to bring home.

Seafood

Seafood, caught seemingly moments before, sits atop piles and piles of melting ice. You can easily find your way to the seafood section – just follow your nose. Due to its close proximity the shores of the Mediterranean, Barcelona is a city which was shaped by seafood. Galician mussels, red Palamos prawns, oysters and juicy squid are just some of the incredible goodies you can find in the seafood section.

One of the most popular things in the seafood department is salted cod. Salted cod is used to make Esqueixada, a traditional Catalan salad of shredded salt cod, tomatoes, onions, olive oil and vinegar, salt, and sometimes a garnish of olives or hard-boiled eggs.

Cheese

If you’re looking to create a cheese tray of local specialties, keep an eye out for Manchego (a sheep’s milk cheese with a firm texture and rich, sharp, buttery taste), Mató (a sweet, unsalted, unfermented cheese perfect when combined with apples and honey) and Serrat
(an intense round cheese made from sheep’s milk with an exterior that is traditionally decorated with different designs and shapes).

Meat

Catalan’s most popular food item has to be its famous Jamón Ibérico or Iberian ham. This cured meat is made from black Iberian pigs, and the flavour is distinctly Spanish with a subtle nutty flavour. Hundreds of legs of ham hang from the stalls and ceilings. There are also other types of ham from Serrano to Lomo, as well as bright red salami and chorizo. If you want some meat to-go, vendors will cut you fresh slices of ham and put it into these darling paper ice-cream cone for you to eat as you walk.

Nuts and Spices

If you’re looking for something to keep your energy up all day as you walk your way around Modernista Barcelona, be sure to stop by the Fruita Seca Morilla stall. This stall sells hundreds of different nuts and dried fruits. There are over 12 different kinds of almonds alone! 

Spain is one of the major saffron producers in the world and this is the essential ingredient to making one of Spain’s most popular dishes; paella. Tiny vials of saffron, worth their weight in gold, are for sale throughout the market and while they might seem costly, it’s a fraction of what you’ll pay back home.

Clams

Before leaving the market, I stopped off at Kiosko Universal. They have an incredible selection of fresh fish, and I just had to try the famous razor clams which are a local delicacy in Barcelona. They were juicy, sweet and tasted of the ocean – perfect for a midday snack.

In addition to my clams, I ordered a plate of fried Padron peppers. You can get these all over Barcelona but nowhere are they fresher than right from the market.

No matter what you come to the Market to buy, you are bound to have an incredible experience just walking up and down the aisles. There are so many things for sale here, and it’s the perfect place to come for souvenirs for loved ones back home. Because nothing touches the heart like something for your stomach

History

The building was constructed in 1897 by Samu Pecz and funded by the then-mayor of Budapest, Károly Kamermayer, who wanted to give his city a first-class marketplace like the ones he’d visited in Paris and London.

One of the most distinguishing features of the exterior is its neoclassical facade and brightly coloured roof. The tile on the roof is Zsolnay tiles from Pécs, Budapest. These tiles were iconic due to their brilliant radiance. You can still spot the marketplace’s roof from across the Budapest skyline.

Location

The market is located next to the Danube river. When it first opened, ships could sail right into the harbour, next to the market, to unload their good. The building which once housed the customs office is now the home to Corvinus University. 

Entrance

When entering the Great Market, take a moment to study the elaborate neo-gothic gates adorn the entryway. Let your eyes turn upwards and gaze at the different designs created with the various hues of red bricks. The large triptych window allows light to pour in through the front of the entrance and makes everything shine!

Practical Info

The market is closed on Sunday, opens at 6am on other days, and closes at 5pm Monday, 6pm Tue-Fri and 3pm Saturday. You’ll notice how enormous it is! There are over 10,000 square meters of space inside the building. Remember to bring cash (Hungarian forints) to pay for all your purchases since most sellers don’t accept anything other than cash. If you have to use the washroom while in the market, there is a bathroom on the top floor, but it is a pay toilet so have some change ready.

The hall is covered in steel and glass, so farmers and artisans can sell their goods any day of the year without worrying about the weather. The intricate, wrought iron ribbing creates an artistic design against the bright orange rooftop. In the early days of the market, huge wagons carrying goods ran down the center aisle. The center aisle is much wider than the rest to make room for these enormous carts. It makes for a comfortable pedestrian walking path.

The entire structure was destroyed during WWII, and restoration took a long time. Delays were inevitable, but the constant problems they ran into meant that the restored market wasn’t finished until 1990. But great works take a long time, resulting in a stunning and faithful reconstruction of the original building’s architecture and ornamentation.

1st Floor

There are three floors which make up the marketplace. The first floor is the most interesting and contains the bulk of the content brought to the market daily. You’ll see seasonal produce, fresh meat, pastries, olives, exotic spices, and, most importantly – Hungarian specialties.

Paprika

Hungarian paprika is sold throughout the market. You can find it in the most lovely packages with intricate embroidery or inside retro-looking tin cans. Paprika is considered the national spice of Hungary, so it’s not just a souvenir but a mainstay of Hungarian cuisine. Hungarian paprika is made from toasted peppers and blended into a fine consistency. Some are hotter mixes than others, but most of them have a little bit of heat. Hungarian paprika is also slightly on the sweet side and very dark red. Looks for the words “edes” or “erdos.” Edes means sweet, and erdos means hot. You can also buy paprika as a paste in tubes.

Hungarian Salami

Another Hungarian staple hanging throughout the market is Hungarian salamis and sausages. Hungarian salami is sought after all over the world. The cured meat contains spices like garlic, peppers, caraway seeds and, of course, paprika. These cured sausages are ideal for picnics; just remember to bring or buy a knife to slice it over cheese, crackers or bread.

Pastries

A sweet treat found throughout the market is Rétes. Rétes are a strudel-like pastry log filled with fresh fruits such as apple, cherry, or poppy seed and topped with powdered sugar. We sampled the assorted berry variety, and it was delicious! 

If you’re looking for something a little more savoury, try the Sajtos Pogácsa or Cheese Scones. These are some with cheese or toppings like mushrooms and sausage for added flavour.

Mushrooms

Another item, favourited by the locals, is fresh and dried mushrooms found at the north end of the hall. These mushrooms are from worldwide, and you rarely find such a great selection.

2nd Floor

Upstairs, overlooking the market below, are various eateries and souvenir stalls. Many souvenirs here are Chinese-made knockoffs, so check the labels before you buy, but there are some gems in there. The embroidered items are the best thing to look for, as many of these are handmade and beautiful keepsakes of Budapest.

The food stalls on the second floor are unpretentious, cheap and tasty. Many stalls have been serving residents for years, so if you want to eat like a local, this is the place to go! You can find black pudding, fried sausages, stuffed cabbage, lángos (deep-fried dough with garlic, sour cream and cheese), and sweet pancakes. Give “Kolbice” a try – a whole wheat bread cone filled with mini sausages, cheddar cheese sauce and fresh sauerkraut.

If you feel like a drink, hop into the borozós (cheap bars), where you can have a glass of inexpensive Hungarian wine, beer or the popular, Unicum (a Hungarian herbal liqueur).

Basement

The basement is where you’ll find the “stinkier” items. Fishmongers, butchers, barrels, and pickles cover the basement, and you can certainly smell it as you descend. Hungarian pickles are incredible. There are so widely different varieties; they don’t seem to stop just at cucumbers and onions. They’ve even perfected a paprika-stuffed pickled cabbage!

If you’re on a budget, the Great Market is the best place to get authentic Hungarian food, quick and cheap. It’s also a reliable place to collect ingredients for the perfect picnic. Head out to the Danube to watch boats cruise up and down the river as you enjoy your tasty treasures.

The market is not only an architectural masterpiece but also a cultural hub where you can find a wide variety of local products, from fresh produce and traditional Hungarian delicacies to handmade crafts and souvenirs. It’s a great place to get a taste of the local culture, history, and cuisine.
