Islamic Architecture of Al-Andalus

The architecture of this era wasn’t about grandeur in the traditional Western sense. It was about intimacy, proportion, and rhythm. About how light filtered through lattice screens, how water echoed off stone, and how shade and shadow became part of the design. It spoke a visual language of geometry and repetition, one that balanced ornament and restraint.

One of its most iconic elements was the horseshoe arch, often paired with poly-lobed arches that curved and overlapped in graceful, almost hypnotic formations. These arches weren’t just structural; they created rhythm, flow, and a sense of movement through the buildings they framed.

You’ll also notice the frequent use of sebka patterns, which are intricate latticed diamond motifs that spread across facades like woven nets of stone. These repeating forms, often carved or rendered in plaster or brick, speak to a love of geometry and order, hallmarks of Islamic design.

Another striking feature is the muqarnas, a kind of architectural honeycomb used in ceilings, domes, and transitional spaces. They shimmer with complexity, fractal-like, as if the architecture itself is dissolving into stardust. Even small examples carry a sense of celestial awe.

The heart of any Andalusi palace or mosque was its courtyard, typically anchored by a central fountain and arranged in a chahar bagh, a symmetrical, quadripartite garden layout inspired by Persian paradise gardens. These spaces were not only functional (cooling the air, providing water) but deeply symbolic, representing paradise on Earth. Decoration, too, carried spiritual weight. The materials themselves were humble: brick, tile, and stucco; they were elevated through craftsmanship. Later, when Christian kings re-employed Muslim artisans after the Reconquista, this style evolved into Mudéjar, an architectural hybrid born of conquest, compromise, and continued cultural exchange. Torre del Oro

Start at the edge of the Guadalquivir River, where the shimmering Torre del Oro once guarded the city’s lifeblood. Built by the Almohads around 1220, the tower formed part of Seville’s elaborate riverfront defences. It was connected to the city walls by chains and flanked by sister towers, working together to control access by water. Ships passing into the city could be blocked or taxed right here.

The name Torre del Oro, or “Tower of Gold,” likely comes from the way its lime-mortar surface once caught the sun, reflecting golden light across the river. Some say it was due to the golden tiles that once coated it; others claim it was because this was where gold from the Americas was stored during the colonial period. Whatever the truth, the name stuck, and so did the shimmer.

Architecturally, the tower is a rare surviving example of Islamic military construction in Spain. Its dodecagonal base (twelve-sided) gives it a geometric precision typical of Almohad engineering. The original structure was topped with a second tier added by the Christians after the Reconquista and a small cupola was later added in the 18th century. But its core remains distinctly Almohad, solid, smooth, and restrained in ornamentation, built more for utility than decoration, yet still oddly elegant. Stand close, and you can almost imagine it in its prime: the murmur of guards speaking in Arabic, the creak of ropes pulling river chains tight, sails lowering as boats approach the fortified curve of the city.

Royal Alcázar of Seville

From the Torre del Oro, follow the curve of the Guadalquivir River heading north for just a few minutes, then veer slightly inland toward Puerta de Jerez. The river will fall away behind you as you step into streets that once led directly to the center of Islamic Seville. The Royal Alcázar is one of the clearest bridges between Islamic Seville and what came after. Though much of what you’ll see today dates from the 14th century, commissioned by Pedro I of Castile, the foundations run far deeper, into the era of the Abbadids and Almohads, when this space was the heart of Muslim power in Seville. The Christian kings didn’t tear it down after the Reconquista; they built over it, with it, and sometimes even through it, enlisting the help of Mudéjar artisans, Muslim builders still working their craft in a now-Christian city.

Look for the Stucco Palace, tucked away behind the more theatrical later additions. It’s one of the few surviving Almohad sections, likely built around the 12th century, and a direct link to Seville’s Islamic past. Horseshoe arches trace the perimeter in quiet elegance, and above them, the delicate lacework of stucco carries geometric and vegetal motifs that feel timeless.

Then move into the more famous Mudéjar Palace, built in the 1360s. A Christian monarch may have commissioned it, but everything about it speaks the language of Al-Andalus: from the zellij tilework climbing the walls like cascading stars, to the calligraphic bands inscribed not with Qur’anic verse this time, but Christian praises rendered in Arabic script. Even the way the palace is organized, around courtyards, with shaded porticoes and central fountains, echoes the spatial ideals of Islamic architecture, rooted in both environmental wisdom and spiritual symbolism.

Corral del Agua

After wandering the palatial halls of the Royal Alcázar, make your way into the winding, sun-dappled streets of Barrio de Santa Cruz. Exit through the Patio de Banderas, turn right, and let yourself get just a little bit lost. The alleyways here are narrow and fragrant, with orange trees overhead and tiled street signs guiding the way. Within minutes, you’ll reach Callejón del Agua, one of the neighbourhood’s most charming and storied lanes.

It’s here you’ll find Corral del Agua, an oasis of calm, tucked behind a low doorway and a tangle of climbing plants. Once part of a corral de vecinos (a type of communal housing common in Seville centuries ago), the building still wraps around a central courtyard where water trickles gently from a Moorish-style fountain and potted plants soak up the filtered sunlight. But today, it’s a restaurant, and a lovely one at that.

Lunch here feels like stepping into a secret garden. Tables are scattered beneath leafy canopies, framed by horseshoe arches and whitewashed walls, and the hum of the city fades to a whisper. The menu leans towards traditional Andalusian cuisine, featuring dishes such as salmorejo, grilled Iberian pork, fresh cod with saffron, and house-made flan. However, it’s the atmosphere that truly steals the show. It’s easy to linger longer than planned, sipping a glass of sherry while the shadows shift across the tiled floor.

La Giralda

From Corral del Agua, follow Callejón del Agua as it curves into Calle Vida, then turn left toward Judería. Take a right onto Calle Judería, and continue straight into the Plaza del Patio de Banderas. Cut across the plaza, veer slightly left, and turn right onto Plaza del Triunfo. From here, La Giralda will be just ahead, towering over the square. La Giralda began as the minaret of the city’s grand mosque in the late 12th century, during the height of Almohad rule. At over 100 meters tall, it would have been one of the tallest structures in the Islamic world at the time, its clean geometry and restrained ornamentation a hallmark of the Almohad style, which emphasized austere elegance over excess.

Though the Renaissance bell tower was added after the Reconquista (in the 16th century), the lower two-thirds of the tower are entirely original. And they’re extraordinary. From a distance, the tower is stately. But up close, it’s teeming with rhythmic detail. Look for the sebka patterning, those delicate, interlacing diamond motifs carved into the surface. They ripple across the facade like a woven net of geometry, both ornamental and mathematical.

Instead of stairs, the interior was built with thirty-five gently sloping ramps, designed so that the muezzin could ride a horse all the way to the top to call the faithful to prayer. Today, you can follow those same ramps on foot. It’s a slow, winding ascent, one that gives you time to absorb the thickness of the walls, the changing play of light, and the echo of footsteps that have passed through for more than 800 years. When you reach the top, take in the panoramic view of Seville, where ancient rooftops meet baroque domes, and the city’s layers unfold beneath you.

Patio de los Naranjos del Salvador

From La Giralda, head east along Calle Alemanes and turn left onto Calle Álvarez Quintero. Continue straight until you reach Plaza del Salvador. Cross the square, then turn right and immediately left to stay on the plaza. From there, turn right onto Calle Córdoba, and you’ll find the Patio de los Naranjos del Salvador just ahead on your right. Many visitors walk into this courtyard thinking it’s a replica of the more famous Patio de los Naranjos at the Cathedral, but in fact, this one is older. Long before the Iglesia del Salvador was built on this site, it was home to Seville’s second mosque, and this patio, its sahn, or open-air courtyard, was at the heart of it.

The layout remains much as it was nearly a thousand years ago. Rows of orange trees line the space with near-geometric precision, casting dappled shadows over the worn stone. In the center sits the ablution fountain, where worshippers would have once stopped to wash their hands, faces, and feet before prayer. The very act of stepping into this courtyard was a transition into sacred space, a pause to cleanse not just the body, but the mind.

Casa de Pilatos

From the Patio de los Naranjos del Salvador, head down Calle Córdoba and turn right onto Plaza Jesús de la Pasión. Follow the plaza as it curves into Calle Alcaicería de la Loza, then turn left onto Calle Pérez Galdós and right onto Calle Guardamino. Continue straight into Plaza de la Alfalfa, which becomes Calle Águilas. Walk along Águilas for a few minutes, then turn left onto Calle Caballerizas, you’ll find the entrance to Casa de Pilatos just ahead on your right.

Built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, after the Christian conquest of Seville, Casa de Pilatos technically belongs to the post-Reconquista period. But its walls still hum with the artistry and traditions of Al-Andalus. The first thing you’ll notice is the central courtyard, laid out in perfect proportion, with slender columns and scalloped arches that reflect the geometry of the Alhambra.

It’s an open-air heart that connects the palace’s many wings, just as it would in a traditional Islamic riad. The air is cool, even on the hottest days, and the tilework, azulejos in vibrant blues, greens, and ochres, climbs the walls like patterned ivy. Every detail here tells a story. The stucco friezes resemble those of the Alcázar, repeating floral and calligraphic patterns. The wooden artesonado ceilings, carved in hypnotic designs, draw the eye upward like star maps in pine and cedar. Even the inscriptions, some in Arabic script and others in Latin, reveal the overlapping layers of power, belief, and beauty.

Convento de Santa Inés

From Casa de Pilatos, head northwest along Calle Caballerizas, then turn right onto Calle Zamudio. Take the next left onto Calle Descalzos and follow it until you reach Plaza Cristo de Burgos. Turn right to stay on the plaza, which becomes Calle Doña María Coronel. You’ll find the entrance to Convento de Santa Inés just ahead on your left. Convento de Santa Inés is a cloistered convent founded in the late 14th century. Built during the early years of Christian rule, Santa Inés is infused with Mudéjar design. You’ll see it in the coffered wooden ceilings, the subtle horseshoe arches, and the azulejo tilework that runs along the lower walls like a visual echo of older mosques. Even the spatial rhythm, the way the chapel opens onto smaller side spaces, the interplay of light and shadow, feels rooted in the architectural logic of Al-Andalus. This was not accidental. Muslim artisans, who continued to work in Seville after the Reconquista, were often hired by Christian patrons to build their convents, palaces, and churches. There’s no face-to-face contact, just the sound of the turnstile creaking softly as your order appears, as if by magic. To buy, look for a menu posted nearby, usually behind a glass case or pinned near the window. It lists the available sweets. Pestiños are delicate pastries fried in olive oil and glazed with honey and sesame, ingredients that trace a direct line back to Al-Andalus. Their roots lie in the Islamic culinary traditions of medieval Iberia, where olive oil, sesame, and floral honeys were staple flavours. Bite into one and you’ll taste the echoes of Moroccan and Levantine sweets, a reminder of how certain dishes have quietly crossed borders and centuries to become part of Seville’s everyday tradition.

El Rinconcillo

Before heading to your final stop at the Arco de la Macarena, take a well-earned pause for dinner at El Rinconcillo, Seville’s oldest bar, founded in 1670. The second you step inside, you’ll feel it: dusty bottles lining tall wooden shelves, bartenders jotting down your tab in chalk on the bar, and a low hum of conversation echoing off ancient tile and timber. But this isn’t just a historic tavern, it’s also a fitting culinary bookend to your day of exploring Islamic Seville. While the menu leans traditional Andalusian, look closer and you’ll find shadows of Al-Andalus in the ingredients and flavour profiles.

Start with a plate of espinacas con garbanzos, a humble but ancient dish of spinach and chickpeas stewed with cumin, paprika, garlic, and olive oil. Its roots go back to Islamic kitchens, where chickpeas and spices were staples of daily cooking. Pair it with berenjenas con miel, lightly fried eggplant drizzled with cane honey, another dish with deep North African and Sephardic echoes, where sweet and savoury were never meant to be kept apart.

Arco de la Macarena

From El Rinconcillo, head down Calle Capataz Manuel Santiago and continue straight onto Calle Bustos Tavera. Follow it as it curves slightly into Calle San Luis and walk straight until you reach the Arco de la Macarena, just ahead on your left. This striking archway is one of the few surviving gateways from the city’s once-formidable medieval walls, built during the Islamic period to protect Isbiliya, as the city was then known. Located at the northern edge of the old city, the gate stood as a main point of entry for travelers, traders, and pilgrims approaching from the countryside, and for centuries, it watched over all who passed through.

While the arch itself has been restored and altered over time, especially during the Baroque period, look closely and you’ll still spot traces of its original Mudéjar brickwork, peeking through beneath layers of whitewash. Stand here and imagine what this gate would have seen in its earliest days: spice merchants from North Africa, their mules loaded with sacks of saffron and cumin; scholars arriving from Córdoba, bringing news of new texts, new ideas; artisans and architects, whose skills would shape everything from mosques to palaces. This was the city’s threshold, its protective edge, and also its open door to the world.

It’s a fitting place to end our tour. You’ve just walked through more than a millennium of Seville’s shifting soul, from the riverbanks where Almohad towers rose, through courtyards where water whispered in the shade, to palaces and patios layered with Islamic geometry and Christian ambition. And now, here at the old gate, the walk ends where it once would have begun: at the boundary between inside and out, past and present.

It was as if Seville had cracked open its gates just for me, revealing its most intimate and storied corners in the stillness of the midday lull.

While the city is best known for its soaring grand cathedral and Royal Alcázar, there’s another side of Seville that reveals itself when you slip off the beaten path. This full-day walking tour is crafted for curious travellers eager to explore tranquil corners, hidden patios, and centuries-old sanctuaries that offer a slower, more soulful experience.

The palace unfolds like a time capsule. Each room is filled with art, antique furniture, and stories I could almost hear whispering from the walls.

Once home to the Duchess of Alba and the birthplace of poet Antonio Machado, the palace blends Gothic and Renaissance details with a homespun charm. One moment I was admiring a portrait, the next I was standing in the quiet chapel, imagining the prayers of those who once lived here. There was something incredibly personal about the space, as if the Duchess of Alba had just stepped out for a moment and might return at any time.

Convento de Santa Paula

From there, take a short stroll to the Convento de Santa Paula, an easy-to-miss gem behind thick stone walls. In Seville, buying sweets from cloistered nuns is a beloved tradition. Look for a small wooden door and give the bell a ring. You may not understand the reply, but soon the door will buzz open, leading you into a shaded courtyard that feels like a sanctuary.

There was a printed list of flavours in both Spanish and English laid out on the counter, and the nun will patiently help you choose. I couldn’t resist the orange blossom jam; it felt like the perfect way to capture the scent and spirit of Seville in a jar.

Palace of the Countess of Lebrija

Wander further south through Seville’s winding lanes until you reach the Palacio de la Condesa de Lebrija, a mansion that feels like a time capsule curated by an inquisitive soul. Built in the 16th century and transformed by the Countess in the 20th century, this home is filled with treasures from her archaeological expeditions and is testament to a women’s efforts to make a name for herself in a field previously only held by men!

Stepping inside, I found myself tiptoeing over vast Roman mosaics, entire scenes of myth and history beneath my feet. Moorish arches framed courtyards lined with azulejos, and shelves brimmed with ancient artifacts, each whispering a fragment of a story. You can spend ages admiring the carved wood ceilings and painted tilework, marvelling at how the Countess had fused art and architecture from all different epochs into a single, harmonious space.

Taberna Águilas

When it’s time for lunch, make your way to Taberna Águilas. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by the warm aroma of garlic, olive oil, and slow-simmered tomatoes drifting from the kitchen. Be sure to try the espinacas con garbanzos, an earthy Sevillian staple made with stewed spinach and chickpeas, alongside a bowl of creamy, chilled salmorejo. And don’t miss the montadito de pringá, a humble yet flavorful open-faced sandwich piled with tender, slow-cooked meats. If you’re visiting in the summer, skip the sangria and do as the locals do: order a glass of the house vermouth, served cold it’s the perfect way to cool off.

Convento de San Leandro

For dessert, let’s head to another convent, this time, the Convento de San Leandro. At the back of this church, you’ll find a quaint little turnstile window, framed by classic blue and white tiles that capture the essence of Sevillian charm. Above it, you’ll find a printed list of the cookies and pastries on offer, some of which even include pictures, as many of the recipes are unique to each convent. When you’re ready to order, flip the “bell,” which resembles a light switch, and a voice will respond from behind the wall. Simply say what you’d like, place your money on the wooden turnstile, and wait as it slowly spins back to you with your order. You’ll receive your sweets, your change, and a little taste of Seville’s enduring traditions.

Casa de Pilatos

A short walk from the convent brings you over to the Casa de Pilatos, a palace that looks as though it were dreamed up by an architect who couldn’t choose just one style, but in the best way possible. This 16th-century palace, still inhabited by the Dukes of Medinaceli, is one of Seville’s most stunning examples of Mudéjar, Gothic, Renaissance, and Roman art and architecture all under one roof.

But it’s the atmosphere, not the architecture, that stays with you. The moment you step inside, the roar of Seville fades into a reverent hush. A cool breath of stone and shade embraces you. The scent of bitter orange trees and aged stone steeped in jasmine and incense envelops you.

The palace boasts over 150 distinct tile designs by Diego and Juan Pulido, an unparalleled azulejo collection showcasing Islamic, geometric, and nature-inspired motifs. It’s a feast for the eyes and the perfect place to hide under the shaded patios from the hot afternoon sun.

AIRE Ancient Baths Sevilla

By late afternoon, the city’s heat can begin to weigh on you, and the best way to escape it while still indulging in a fabulous Sevillian experience is by making your way to AIRE Ancient Baths. From the small archway outside, you could never imagine the wonder that lies in store. Inside this restored Mudéjar building, candlelight flickers off stone walls and the soft sound of water guides you through the most relaxing ancient baths in Seville.

I lingered longest in the saltwater bath, floating weightlessly beneath an ancient vaulted ceiling. Every knot in my shoulders melted away. You can either book simple access to the thermal waters or indulge in a soothing massage using their signature orange flower blossom essential oils. Either way, you’ll emerge into the fading daylight feeling restored and ready for the evening.

La Fresquita

!When you’re ready for dinner, head over to La Fresquita, a bar that felt like a devotional altar to Semana Santa. Semana Santa is Seville’s Holy Week celebration, marked by solemn processions of ornate floats depicting the Passion of Christ. Carried by robed brotherhoods, these processions fill the streets with music, incense, and centuries-old tradition. Holy Week photos and memorabilia lined the walls of this crowded tapas bar. Squeeze your way inside and order montaditos and carne con tomate. The simple dishes burst with flavour! There are some small tables across the street, along the walls of the church, but if you’re looking for the local energy of Seville, stick to the crowded corners of the bar.

La Carbonería

As night falls, it’s time to seek out one of Seville’s most iconic experiences: a flamenco show. But rather than the polished, tourist-oriented performances in the city centre, we’re searching for a local gem. Wandering through the dim, quiet streets of the Santa Cruz district, it might feel like you’ve taken a wrong turn. Then, down an unassuming alley, a single lantern marks the spot, and you start to hear the sharp stomps, clapping, and the roar of an excited crowd.

La Carbonería feels like one of Seville’s best-kept secrets, though word of its magic has certainly spread. Once a coal warehouse, this rustic space has become a beloved local haunt for spontaneous flamenco. Inside, mismatched chairs surround long wooden tables beneath a soaring, timeworn ceiling. The walls are splashed with posters, old photos, and peeling paint.

Performances typically take place on the hour, every night from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. During the shows, cameras and recording are strictly prohibited, encouraging you, and everyone else in the audience, to be fully present. Without the glow of screens or the click of shutters, and in a building that feels untouched by time, you’re transported. The raw emotion of the music and dance holds you spellbound, as if the modern world has quietly slipped away.

The performances wrap up around 11 p.m., but the night is far from over. Inside the bar, the energy lingers, and out on the leafy patio, the atmosphere becomes especially lively. It’s the perfect place to while away the rest of the evening, drinks are delightfully cheap (cash only), and the vibe is unmatched. After a relaxed day exploring Seville’s hidden corners, there’s no better spot to end your night.

It was later reimagined in the 16th century with the classic Andalusian layout: a central patio open to the sky, with rooms arranged around it. Like many homes of its kind, the ground floor was used during the hot summer months, while the upper floor was reserved for the cooler winters.

Over time, the house passed through the hands of various noble families, including the Counts of Corbos and later the Counts of Miraflores. But by the turn of the 20th century, it had fallen into a state of decline. That changed dramatically in 1901, when Doña Regla Manjón Mergelina, soon to be the Countess of Lebrija, bought the property and set out on an ambitious restoration. Her goal? To turn it into both her home and a personal museum for the antiquities she had spent years collecting.

She personally oversaw the transformation, a process that took thirteen years and was completed in 1914. Along the way, she was officially granted the noble title “Countess of Lebrija” by King Alfonso XIII in 1912. What she created was more than just a grand residence; it became a “living museum” where art, archaeology, and architectural beauty came together under one roof.

After her death in 1938, the palace remained in the family. In the late 20th century, it was carefully restored once again, this time to open its doors to the public. Today, visitors can explore the very halls where the Countess lived, collected, and preserved history with vision and passion.

The Life and Legacy of the Countess of Lebrija

Regla Manjón Mergelina, the Countess of Lebrija, was far from a typical aristocrat. Born into nobility in the 19th century, she grew into a formidable scholar, visionary art collector, and one of Spain’s earliest female voices in archaeology. Widowed at a young age, she channelled her grief into a lifelong devotion to the arts and antiquities, travelling across Europe and excavating Roman ruins, especially those in nearby Italica. In 1912, she was granted the revived noble title of Countess of Lebrija, but instead of investing her wealth in status symbols or fashionable luxuries, she poured her resources into scholarship and preservation.

Italica

The archaeological site of Italica, just outside Seville in Santiponce, was the first Roman city in Spain and the birthplace of emperors Trajan and Hadrian. Known for its vast amphitheatre and beautifully preserved mosaics, Italica offers a vivid glimpse into Roman life. In the 19th century, many locals in Italica were unaware of the historical value buried beneath them. When ancient mosaics were uncovered, they were often mistaken for rubble and destroyed to clear space for new buildings. But Regla Manjón Mergelina saw their true importance and made it her mission to rescue and preserve these priceless remnants of the past before they were lost forever.

In an era when women were largely excluded from academic institutions, the Countess defied convention. She became the first woman admitted to Seville’s Fine Arts Academy, joined the Royal Academy in Madrid, and took a leading role in heritage conservation as a member of the Provincial Commission of Historic and Artistic Monuments.

Today, the palace stands as a living tribute to her life’s work, a museum where every mosaic, sculpture, and relic speaks to the transformative power of female patronage in a world that rarely made space for women’s voices.

Entering the Palace

As I stepped through the gilded wrought iron gate and into the cool shade of the palace’s entrance hall, my feet met the first of many jaw-dropping floor mosaics. This one is opus sectile, a decorative technique, closely related to pietra dura, that flourished in the Roman world during antiquity and the medieval era. It involves cutting and inlaying materials, such as marble, mother of pearl, or colored glass, into walls or floors to create intricate images or patterns. Unlike traditional mosaics, which use numerous small, uniform pieces (tesserae) to build a design, opus sectile employs larger, custom-shaped segments that can define entire sections of the composition. Each piece is finely polished, then meticulously trimmed to fit the overall pattern with precision and visual impact.

This spectacular treasure was rescued by the Countess herself from the ruins of Italica in 1914. It was discovered in a hillside olive grove known as Los Palacios, just above Italica’s amphitheatre, where grand Roman villas once stood. Upon learning of the findm, a mosaic fragment depicting Leda and the Swan, he Countess swiftly acquired the land to prevent the mosaic’s destruction, employing painstaking care to extract and reinstall the full floor in her home.

Measuring nearly seven meters across, the mosaic is composed of twenty-five medallions, including mythological scenes like Pan playing his flute. He is portrayed as a graceful youth, his expressive face radiating a warm, joyful energy. With his gaze lifted upward and a traditional flute held in his right hand, he appears to be singing. His half-open, smiling mouth adds a lifelike vibrancy to the figure.

In each of the four corners, the seasons of the year are personified as female busts. Winter wears a crown of bare branches, Spring is adorned with flowers, and Autumn is crowned with bunches of grapes. Summer, crowned with golden wheat, stands out for her exceptional beauty and the artistry of her execution, making her the most striking of the four.

The design also features scenes from the myths of Zeus’s many transformations, including Europa with the bull, Ganymede carried by the eagle, and Danaë bathed in golden light. Woven throughout are elements drawn from Roman, Greek, and even Egyptian traditions, such as the Apis bull and a river god resembling the Nile, highlighting the rich cultural fusion that defined Roman Hispania.

Athena

Standing watch near the central patio is a striking statue of Athena, known to the Romans as Minerva. Positioned at the entrance to the main hall, the figure depicts the goddess wearing a helmet and bearing the gorgoneion, Medusa’s head, which Perseus had gifted to her, on her chest. She is captured in a dynamic, combative stance, with her right arm outstretched and her leg stepping forward. This posture causes her garments to flow in lively, curved folds, adding a sense of movement and energy to the sculpture.

The Guided Tour Upstairs

If you have time (and I recommend that you do), consider joining one of the guided tours of the upper floor. This part of the palace isn’t just about mosaics, it’s about the woman behind them. The upstairs rooms have been left almost exactly as the Countess lived in them.

Grand Staircase

To enter the private apartments upstairs, you ascend the awe-inspiring grand staircase. The walls are lined with hand-painted blue and yellow tiles, beautifully complemented by vivid yellow paint that makes the entire space feel like stepping into a sun-drenched jewel box, bright, elegant, and full of character.

Above your head, take not of the wooden roof, gilded and is carved with geometric star patterns. These eight-pointed star motifs are central to Islamic geometric art and appear frequently in Moorish architecture across Spain, especially in Andalusia. In Islamic thought, geometric patterns often reflect ideas of infinity, unity, and divine order. The repetition and balance are symbolic of the eternal nature of God and the complexity of the universe. Stars in particular can symbolize light, guidance, and celestial perfection.

Upper Floor

Between the galleries and the house’s façade lies a spacious hallway that the Countess of Lebrija envisioned as a “grand hall,” enclosing a large courtyard that overlooks the pedestrian street below. Stained glass windows cast kaleidoscopic light onto marble floors, while ornate lamps hang from wooden beams, adding a glow of old-world opulence.

Doña Regla Manjón, had a deep appreciation for collecting bargueños, also known as bufetes, which can be seen throughout the rooms of the palace. These are ornate wooden cabinets crafted between the 16th and 18th centuries, often decorated with intricate marquetry and inlay (taracea), originally designed for storing documents and easily transportable. The display cases are densely filled with a wide assortment of glassware and porcelain, with a particular emphasis on delicate decorative figurines.

Other rooms showcase exquisite ceramics from Triana, delicate Chinese porcelain, and Gothic-era religious sculptures. The drawing rooms are furnished with hand-carved chairs, silk tapestries, and 17th-century paintings, blending Andalusian warmth with European sophistication.

Tucked away inside the palace is a serene private chapel, preceded by an elegant 18th-century plaque that marks its entrance. At the heart of this intimate space hangs a striking crucifix, crafted in an oriental style that sets it apart from traditional European depictions. On either side stand expressive Baroque statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, their richly detailed forms adding a sense of solemn grandeur. The chapel blends devotional art with personal reflection, offering a quiet corner of spiritual beauty within the otherwise vibrant palace.

One of the most personally cherished rooms by the Countess of Lebrija, the library holds a quiet, contemplative atmosphere that speaks to her love of knowledge and history. Here, part of the family’s archive is preserved, including meticulously arranged collections of personal and official correspondence. Each letter is carefully filed, offering a glimpse into the intellectual and social world of the Countess. The space feels less like a formal archive and more like a private retreat, where curiosity and scholarship were nurtured among shelves of books and handwritten memories.

Outdoor Patio

Back on the ground floor, take a moment to step outside, onto the back patio. These enclosed patios of Seville have their roots in Roman domus architecture. Built for privacy, shade, and tranquility, these inward-facing courtyards provided a cool refuge from the heat and a space for family life, hidden from public view. Moorish influence introduced fountains, lush greenery, and an emphasis on spiritual retreat, while later Christian styles added colorful tiles and decorative flourishes.

Dining Room

Step out from the patio and into the dining room, where the cheerful blue and yellow palette continues to shine. Blue tiles climb partway up the walls, playfully contrasting with sunny yellow paint and dark wooden ceiling beams above. The style here isn’t just beautiful, it’s deeply rooted in history. Sevillian tilework dates back to the days of Al-Andalus, when Muslim artisans introduced tin-glazing and intricate geometric designs inspired by Islamic art. Because Islamic tradition avoided human figures, these early tiles focused on mesmerizing patterns, flowing plant motifs, and elegant calligraphy.

The Countess of Lebrija acquired a valuable collection of Sevillian Renaissance tiles, which originally came from the Convent of San Agustín following its confiscation during the period of ecclesiastical disentailment. One particularly striking piece is a decorative façade framed by a spiral column and a caryatid, now installed on the rear bench that faces the garden.

By the 16th and 17th centuries, Seville had become a major production center for tiles, exporting them across Spain and to the Americas. Techniques like cuerda seca (dry cord) and arista (raised-line) relief were refined here, enabling the mass production of elaborate multicolored patterns that still adorn churches, palaces, and public buildings.

These reflected the Islamic artistic tradition of infinite, repeating patterns that symbolize divine unity and order. Interlaced stars, lozenges, and floral arabesques were meant to suggest the perfection of the cosmos. Birds, vines, fruits, and fountains are common, symbolizing abundance, paradise, and the cycle of life. Tiles featuring pastoral scenes or musicians also brought storytelling and entertainment into private and public spaces. Particularly in palatial settings, tiles sometimes depict Greco-Roman gods, virtues, or allegorical figures, linking the household to classical ideals of virtue and beauty.

Salon

Just across from the patio facing dining room, you can step into the small salon where Venetian mirrors and Flemish paintings coexist with Moorish tiles and Roman columns.

Roman Treasure Rooms

The remainder of the ground floor of the palace’s room are dedicated ot their astonishing collection of Roman mosaics. Each mosaic is a visual narrative. The detail is exquisite: tesserae arranged in gradients of ochre and slate, bringing ancient stories to life beneath your feet. Scattered throughout are marble statues, busts of Roman nobles, and carved inscriptions, a miniature archaeological park nestled within a palatial home.

Octagonal Hall

The Octagonal Room, which once featured a central fountain, is adorned with floor mosaics that reflect a distinctly classical style, likely dating back to the reign of Emperor Hadrian. This room holds special significance, as the mosaic here was the very first piece the Countess acquired in 1901. It was this discovery that sparked her passion for collecting and ultimately led to the ambitious transformation of the palace into the remarkable space we see today.

Medusa Room

The Roman mosaics adorning the Medusa Room are strikingly beautiful, with the room deriving its name from the iconic Medusa head featured at the mosaic’s center.

Dionysus Room

From the Medusa Room, you enter another exquisite chamber known as the Dionysus Room. Its floor is covered by yet another impressive Roman mosaic, this one featuring geometric patterns. The room takes its name from a Roman-era bust depicting the god Dionysus.

The evolution of black and white mosaics on the Iberian Peninsula mirrors a similar trend seen in Italy during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, reflecting the tastes of the Hispanic elite and their admiration for the artistic styles of the Roman capital. In Italica (Santiponce, Seville), the mosaics reveal the influence of highly skilled workshops, characterized by the use of detailed preparatory drawings. While color plays a prominent role in these designs, it is often applied in a more subdued palette.

Hall of Columns

This room is the largest within the palace’s collection, distinguished by two prominent Roman columns, one crafted from green marble and the other composed of multicoloured marble. Known as the Hall of Columns, it showcases a striking floor mosaic encircled by a wide border of large ceramic tiles.

One of my favourite mosaics features the Latin word Salve, which translates to “Hello” or “Welcome.” While salve is the more commonly used form, the variation salva could have been chosen to emphasize a deeper wish, something closer to “be safe” rather than just a casual greeting. Stepping over this word as you enter feels like receiving a quiet blessing, a warm wish for safety and well-being as you pass through.

The Palacio de la Condesa de Lebrija is so much more than just a beautiful building. What really makes it stand out isn’t just the stunning Roman mosaics or the intricate Mudéjar details, but the passion and vision of one remarkable woman who brought a crumbling house back to life. It’s rare to find a place that feels both deeply personal and historically rich. For me, this wasn’t just another sightseeing stop, it felt like stepping into someone’s lifelong dream, a quiet conversation with the past that still lingers in every corner.
