This outer market grew up around the Tsukiji Fish Market. It supported the local and tourist populations gathering in this part of Tokyo. The narrow streets and alleys around the market housed some of the best casual restaurants and tiny street food vendors that served fish straight from the market. It also was (and is) where you could find great shopping for kitchen and household goods! Contrary to popular thought, this part of town did not disappear along with the fish market’s move to Koto City. The Tsukiji Outer Market is still a bustling area of Tokyo, even without the fish market nearby. What is the Tsukiji Outer Market?

The outer market is where you’ll find over 400 shops, grocers and small restaurants, crowded into only a few narrow alleys around what was once the largest fish market in Tokyo. The streets of the outer market explode with colour and excitement. Vendors yell at each other and passers-by 24/7, making the place feel full of life even in the very early hours of the morning.

Access

The Tsukiji Outer Market can be easily reached by foot from either Tsukiji Shijo Station on the Oedo Line or Tsukiji Station on the Hibiya Line. Shimbashi Station is the closest option for those using JR trains, with a 20-minute walk to the market.

Everything You Need to Eat!

Fresh Sushi

The outer market is the perfect spot to grab a bit of breakfast. Find a sushi bar with a bunch of old locals eating inside. Those with a line out of the door are always a surefire way to spot a good spot. While they might not have door-to-door access to fresh fish as before, they still bring in the same selection, just from a little further afield.

Tsukiji Itadori Bekkan

Tsukiji Itadori Bekkan is one of the most popular spots in the outer market to find the best sushi and sashimi. It’s made to order, so you know it’s super fresh. It’s definitely on the more expensive side but well worth the price. The seasonal selection by the chef with 10 pieces of sushi and a roll will run you 5100 yen. They also have a Nagomi plate with seven pieces of shish and a roll for 3600. 

Maguro / Tuna 

Tuna is one of the most important fish sold at the fish market. One of the most popular tourist attractions at the new market is the Tuna auction. Early morning risers head to the market at the crack of dawn to witness the bidding wars that break out over the best pieces of fish caught that day. To see what all the fuss is about, you should make a point to seek out some fresh Maguro (tuna) served up on sushi or as sashimi. There are often variety plates that feature different varieties such as bluefin, fatty, medium fatty and regular tuna. A great way to see which is your favourite, so you know what to order next time. These can be expensive as tuna isn’t cheap, so expect to pay upwards of 3000 yen for a multi-piece tray.

Kaisendon

A traditional breakfast dish eaten in Japan is Kaisendon. Kaisendon is a traditional Japanese dish consisting of a bowl of rice (“donburi”) topped with a variety of raw, fresh seafood (“kaizen”) known as sashimi. These can be found throughout the market, and every shop has its own unique take on the dish. You’ll always be served a variety of fish, everything from fatty tuna, shrimp, egg and other fresh daily fish selections. Bowls range from 1500 to 3000 yen.

Grilled Scallops & Fresh Oysters

If you’re a seafood connoisseur and want the best of the best, plenty of shops here will be right up your alley. One of the most popular street foods in the Outer Market is fresh grilled scallops cooked over a charcoal flame. Thanks to the grilling, they have the most delicious flavour, which balances the sweetness of the scallop perfectly. These will run you about 1000 yen.

Another delight of the market is these larger-than-life oysters. They are absolutely oversized but nevertheless delicious. They taste clean and fresh and cost you about 700-800 yen.

Tamagoyaki 

Plenty is more on offer if you’re not in the mood for fresh fish. Tamagoyaki is rolled-up, freshly made Japanese-style omelettes. They are super cheap at only 100 yen and a delicious way to start the day or just as a mid-afternoon snack. An entire slab of tamagoyaki runs about 500 – 800 yen, depending on if there are any additional ingredients. Great to share with friends.

Fresh Fruit

Tsukiji has always had a wide selection of fresh fruit vendors selling some of the best produce in the city. Is there anything more precious than the delicately wrapped fruits of Japan? I think not. Highly recommend, especially when in season, the strawberries. Japan is well known for its perfectly grown strawberries. And while they might seem pricey, they are spectacular. They even sell white strawberries which are super unique and even more delicious. A bowl of fresh strawberries generally costs about 500 yen for a selection.

Uni

One of the most uniquely Japanese delicacies has got to be fresh uni. Uni, or sea urchin, is the edible portion of the inside of spiny sea urchins. The taste is unrivalled. It’s almost buttery, with a sea-like flavour. I love it, and getting it fresh from the market is one of the best places to try it. They serve it on its own in various spots in Tsukiji and on sushi rice if you prefer to try it with a little bit of rice. Uni is a little pricey, a bowl of pure uni will run you about 1500 yen, but a single piece of uni sushi will be much less expensive.

Waygu

Another food item that many people coming to Japan might be looking for is Waygu beef. Wagyu is the classification given to four different Japanese breeds of beef cattle. It is widely known for being the most tender, delicious beef you can eat. In the Tsukiji market, you’ll see lots of stands selling sticks of Wagyu beef. Some shops sell thinner slices of beef you can pick out, and they cook it right before you. Overall, I prefer to have my Waygu in a restaurant. But if this is your only opportunity to try it, you can always pick out a small slice to ensure you try this pedigree cut of beef at least once!

Unagi

Another traditional dish served in the market is Unagi. Unagi is freshly grilled eel, slathered in a thick, sweet and savoury sauce which is carmelized over the fish as it cooks over a hot grill. You can find sticks of Unagi for around 300 yen. If you’ve never had Unagi, this is a great opportunity to try it out!

Ice Cream

If you’re in the mood for desserts, soft-serve ice cream will always be on offer all over the outer market. Dozens of different flavours to choose from spill out along the streets. Vendors are ready to give a sweet treat to anyone walking by, even on colder days.

Daifuku Mochi

Mochi is one of my favourite Japanese sweets. Mochi is made from pounding sweet rice flour into a gummy texture wrapped around different fillings like macha or sweet red bean paste. In the Tsukiji Market, you can find mochi topped with a fresh red or white strawberry that amps the flavour up to 100!

Shopping

Knife Shops

The Tsukiji Outer market is home to many stores selling specialty chef and kitchen utensils. Most of these were opened to be geared toward sushi chefs preparing their fish. But today, they are a little more broad and open to everyone. Inside you’ll find professional-grade knives. Japanese knives are known as some of the best in the world, and if you’re looking for an upgrade to your kitchen collection, this is such a wonderful souvenir to treat yourself to. Something you will use for the rest of your life.

Ceramics

The ceramics in the market were my favourite thing to pursue. They were so inexpensive, but the designs were incredible. The vibrant colours and intricate paintings were handmade, each a little different from the next. I would pick out my favourite patterns from each shop and, at the end of the day, have a little collection of four perfectly mismatched, but that’s what makes it so charming.

Spices & Dried Goods

Tsukiji is also a wonderful place to shop for spices and dried goods. One of the best things to look for is homemade Furikake. Furikake is a dry Japanese condiment made from green and nori seaweed flakes. In addition to the seaweed, there are a variety of additional ingredients added for the various flavours, from sesame seeds, fish flakes, spices and more. Furikake is used to sprinkle on top of rice, veggies, and anything you like. But the ones made fresh from the market are even more special and a great gift to bring home.

Namiyoke Inari Shrine

While in the market, you should definitely make a visit to the small Namiyoke Inari Shrine. This shrine was the guardian of the marketplace and its traders when the old fish market was here. The name means “protection from waves,” which is very suitable for all the fishermen who pass by daily. Although the fisherman has moved, the shrine remains. The courtyard is dotted with various memorial plaques and carvings donated by trade groups in the marketplace. An excellent way to bring happiness and prosperity to the traders.

One of the greatest things to do while walking around the Tsukiji Outer Market is exploring. Get lost, and you’ll always discover something fantastic. The smells from each alleyway changes from street to street. Sweet, sour, fishy, spicy and pungent. A feast for the senses. 

The greatest thing about this place is that after the exodus of the Fish market, the area became a little more local. Sure, it’s still immensely popular with tourists, but it’s equally just a spot for locals to grab something to eat on their way to work. You’ll pass hundreds of people on their way to grab a snack before they get on the train or mothers pushing prams trying to do their morning shopping.

I love watching locals doing their thing, living in their city, and experiencing the environments the way they were supposed to be experienced. Not as guests, as settlers.

The outer market is busy, loud and unmissable. Make sure you carve out time in your next trip to Tokyo to explore and eat all there is on offer!

What are Bento Boxes or Ekiben?

“Bento” translates into the English word for “boxed-lunch.” These meals were designed to be eaten on the go. The invention of the bento box dates back to the Kamakura period (1185 to 1333). Back then, they were pretty simple and made mostly to carry rice.

It wasn’t until the late 16th century that the boxes evolved into a more luxurious design during the Edo period. Beautiful lacquered wooden boxes were made to display bite-sized food within. These fancy bento boxes were called the ‘Makunouchi.’ This translates into “between acts” as the lacquered boxes were designed to be sold inside Kabuki theatres and eaten during the intermission.

Different boxed meals were designed to appeal to various social classes. The ones with more expensive, specialty ingredients were sold to the upper classes, where the lower classes ate bentos with simpler ingredients. There were even specialty boxes designed to highlight seasonal fruits and vegetables during different times of the year.

Ekiben comes from the words “eki,” which means railway station. These bento boxes were designed exclusively for travellers on the railway. Sometimes people needed to travel long distances into big cities for work, so this was an excellent solution for people who needed to eat their dinner on the train. But who didn’t have time to prepare a healthy meal themselves.

Today there are rarely “dining cars” on Japanese trains as people will more often than not opt to bring these boxed meals onto the train instead. If you missed out on buying one in the station by chance, they are usually for sale inside the train as well.

Elements of an Ekiben

There are hundreds of different varieties of ekibens. But in general, the make-up of an ekiben should include a carb, a protein, a veggie and a fruit or dessert. Each one of these elements is separated into a different part of the container. 

Another advantage to the Ekiben is that they sometimes feature ingredients from local prefectures. Even if you’re just stopping off at a station and then continuing on to a different final destination, you can hop off the train and grab an ekiben featuring a local delicacy.

While many simpler versions of the ekiben costs around $10, various gourmet boxes can cost almost $30! That might seem like a lot considering the kind of meal you can buy in Japan for $30, but I think the novelty of them is so special and worth the money. Ekiben’s are a quintessentially Japanese experience that you MUST have on your next Shinkansen journey.

Where to Buy Ekiben’s?

Japanese Convenience Store

One of the easiest and cheapest places to buy an Ekiben or bento box is at a Japanese convenience store. If you’ve read my post all about Japanese convenience stores, you’ll know they are one of the best places to eat in Japan (sounds weird, but it’s really true). The bento boxes available in the stores change throughout the day, some are more geared towards breakfast others more filling for dinner. My favourite Japanese convenience stores to look out for are 7-Eleven, Lawson and Family Mart. If you happen to be shopping inside a large supermarket, you’ll also be able to find these ekiben’s there.

Train Stations

But the best place to buy traditional Ekiben’s is inside the train station. Any station with long-distance trains is going to sell a myriad of different ekibens. Stations like Tokyo Station are so large that you’ll find dozens and dozens of shops selling nothing but ekibens. I remember my first time in Tokyo station, I was overwhelmed with all the different options in front of me. To help others in my situation, I went ahead and made a list of the best Ekiben’s you can buy inside Tokyo Station! And to make it even more straightforward, there really is one place to find it all! And that’s Ekibenya Matsuri.

Ekibenya Matsuri

Without a doubt, the most popular place to pick up your ekiben is Ekiben Matsuri. It’s located inside the station, past the ticketing gates, so you will need a ticket or entry card to get access to the shop. There are over 200 different ekiben sold at Ekibenya Matsuri! One of the best things about this shop is that the ekiben sold here are not just from Tokyo, but from all over Japan! Some exclusive ekiben you usually could only find in smaller cities across the country are shipped in here daily, so you can literally have a taste of the entire country in one spot.

Tokyo Bento

The Tokyo Bento from Ekibenya Matsuri is a platter of the best of the best ingredients from Tokoyo. The main features are the tamagoyaki (rolled omelette) and a beautiful slice of salmon with a tiny soy sauce bottle to squeeze on top. There is a side of rice with pickled plums and a pile of fresh steamed vegetables. And for dessert you get a freshly made macha mochi!

Gyuniku Domannaka 

While a pre-cook and cold box of beef might be unpalatable to some, this is honestly of the best packages. We got one to try, and though we were apprehensive at first, once we tasted it, we were amazed at how delicious and moist the meat was. The Gyuniku Domannaka is from Yonezawa and is made with a secret marinated sauce, making it taste just impeccable!

Daruma Bento

The Daruma Ekiben from Gunma Prefecture is another one of those gimmicky boxes which are impossible to pass up. The bright red container is shaped into the form of a Daruma Doll. Darumas are good luck dolls in Japan, and the slit in the mouth of the box can be used after the meal is done to help store your coins. The food inside the package is pretty healthy. As Gunma prefecture is located up in the mountains this meal has no fish and highlights the rich food found at altitude. The bento features shiitake mushrooms, burdock root, bamboo shoots, and root vegetables.

Hipparidako Meshi

This Ekiben’s name translates to “octopus in high demand,” and that is pretty much what you’ll find inside. From Hyogo Prefecture near the Kobe Harborland and waterfront, this beautifully crafted clay pot features a myriad of fresh seafood. Inside you’ll find braised octopus, along with shiitake mushroom, bamboo, conger eel, shredded egg, vegetable and vinegar rice. It’s almost as if someone was fishing off the mainland and this is a selection of the catch of the day!

Oshizushi

One of the oldest bento recipes you can find here is from 1913! It is a very simple box featuring thinly sliced horse mackerel atop pressed sushi rice covered in vinegar sauce. This is called “oshizushi” style and is one of the oldest styles of sushi making. The dish comes from Ofuna Station near Kamakura.

Shinkansen Bento

If you’re travelling with children or are a child at heart, then you really MUST buy the Shinkansen Bento. The bullet train-shaped container is something you can keep as a souvenir or even use for future homemade bentos. Inside you’ll find food best suited for a simple palette (aka for the kids). You’ll find fried chicken, shrimp, pork sausages, meat dumplings, potatoes and, of course, rice!

Three Flavour Beef Bento

If you love beef, then you must try the Three Flavour Beef Bento. Inside this box are three types of flavours: “Beef Soboro Sansho Flavor”, “Spicy Beef”, and “Beef Miso Pickled Grill”. Plus, you get a soft boiled egg on the side along with some delicious rice.  The beef comes from Nipponbashi, near Osaka. Some of this meat is flavoured with Sansho which is a specialty of this region. Sansho berries have a strong, peppery, citrus flavour that has been compared to lemon, yuzu and grapefruit!

Seasonal Box

If you ever see a seasonal box, I would implore you to give it a try! It’s such a unique way to taste the literal flavours of the season in Japan. We visited during the Fall so our tasting box included Autumnal flavours such as chestnuts, shiitake mushrooms, mackerel, trout, smoked duck, and sweet potatoes. It was absolutely delicious and looked like a miniature painting!

Tuna & Salmon Roe

If you want a taste of the sea, you need to try the tuna and salmon roe bento. This is one of the brightest meals on offer with that hot pink of the tuna and flaming orange of the salmon roe. The entire meal is placed atop shredded omelet and vinegared rice. You also get some pickled ginger and wasabi on the side to cut the fat of the tuna. Everyone is always so surprised at how fresh and tasty this fish is considering its from a box!

Pork Cutlet Bento

An item that is often overlooked is the Pork Cutlet Bento. Pork cutlets are one of the things that Japan just does right. Somehow they always manage to capture the juiciness of the pork while the outside is crisped to perfection! The cutlet is served alongside white rice with potato salad and some pickled radishes.

#1. Spend a Night in a Space Age Capsule Hotels

Capsule Hotels are one of the most unique forms of accommodation and are only available in Japan (although it’s slowly starting to catch on elsewhere). Capsule hotels are not just a super cool thing to experience but also a great way to save money! They’re a great place to stay the first night you arrive since you’re bound to crash hard, and there’s no point shelling out for a luxury hotel you won’t even notice until you’ve had a good night’s sleep.

Capsule hotels are found all over the city and are great since they’re most often in fantastic locations outside train stations. Capsule hotels are divided into male and female floors where you’ll get a single capsule to sleep inside. While the capsule is little more than a person-shaped rectangular cube, most are more spacious than you’d imagine and come with your own personal light, tv, bedding, place to plug in all your devices and even air conditioning. It feels like sleeping in a spaceship in your own little pod. Outside your capsule, you can use all the amenities in the hotel. They are complete with spotless showers, places to sit and eat (always filled with lots of vending machines), and some even have massage chair floors where you can relax and read.

#2. Explore a Dream World in TeamLab Planet Tokyo

The TeamLab Planets exhibition in Tokyo is a truly unique and immersive experience that you won’t find anywhere else. This digital art museum features a wide range of interactive installations that use cutting-edge technology to create mesmerizing displays of light, sound, and movement.

One of the standout exhibits is the Forest of Lamps, which is a room filled with thousands of glowing lanterns that respond to your movements. As you walk through the room, the lanterns change color and shape, creating an ethereal and dreamlike atmosphere. Another must-see exhibit is the Crystal World, a cavern-like space filled with crystal-like structures that seem to grow and change as you move through the space. The installation uses light and sound to create an immersive and sensory experience that is truly unlike anything else.

#3. Get Spooked By Godzilla

In amongst the neon jungle, which is Shinjuku, keep your eyes peeled for a monster poking his head out. Don’t think it’s the jet lag that is indeed Godzilla himself towering above you. Hotel Gracery plays host to the beast, and if you want to see what it’s like to be in Godzilla’s head, you can visit the Bonjour cafe on the 8th floor. This cafe has a small menu but does offer a great view from outside Godzilla’s head across Shinjuku. Godzilla is such an iconic part of Japanese entertainment, so seeing him in the “flesh” here in Shinjuku makes you feel like you’re in Japan!

#4. Explore the Strange World of Love Hotels

If capsule hotels seem a little claustrophobic, you can check out a “Love Hotel.” These Love Hotels aren’t for the faint of heart, but you will get a once-in-a-lifetime experience. All over Tokyo and other parts of Japan, you’ll see these types of hotels on various corners of the city. The rooms are rented by the hour and per night, so you can imagine what kind of clientele they are geared towards…But does that mean you can’t go as a tourist to fulfil your curiosity? Absolutely not! These hotels aren’t as seedy as you might imagine. They’re actually pretty incredible or at least incredibly weird.

Each room is themed for a different interest; some have rotating beds, others are covered floor to ceiling in Hello Kitty paraphernalia, and others even have heart-shaped jacuzzis! These hotel rooms are so cutesy because around 90% of love hotels in Japan are designed by women. Being developed by women means that they are more likely to come inside than be weirded out by a sketchy-looking hotel. Also, for this reason, the hotels are always super clean and extremely private. Some check-in desks are entirely run by touch screens, so you don’t even need to interact with a real human on your way in! Definitely a unique experience.

#5. Act like a Kid Again at Tokyo DisneySea

One of my favourite parts of Tokyo is DisneySea, and while visiting what might on paper feel like an American theme park seems odd on a list of uniquely JAPANESE adventures, DisneySea is unlike any of its North American counterparts. The influence of Japan’s creative culture made this park so wondrous. It is famously known as the best theme park in the world. Unlike Disneyland, which has been replicated almost brick for brick worldwide (even in Japan), DisneySea is one of a kind. Here you’ll be able to ride the most immersive and original rides in all of Disney and visit the seven ports inspired by fictional and historical seaside locations. You can visit Ariel’s Kingdom or Aladdin’s Castle. DisneySea is also home to Duffy the Bear, a character you’ll only find here in Tokyo!

#6. Explore the Walled City inside Kawasaki Warehouse

I am a HUGE fan of the arcades in Japan! I have sunk way more money than I’m proud of trying to win a stuffed Pokemon character. All arcades in Japan are worth checking out for a great night out, but none are as weird as Kawasaki Warehouse. The warehouse arcade is located about 30 minutes outside the city but is well worth the trip. Inside what looks like an old, rusted-over building, you’ll find the almost picture-perfect recreation of the gritty streets of Kowloon.

Kowloon is the famous crime-filled, walled city of China that has been the inspiration for apocalyptic environments for years. Spread out over multiple floors, this place, made to look like a crumbling city, is actually an arcade. Set amongst the rotting walls, dirty clothing lines, and shady retail signage are real arcade games you can play in this haunting setting. Don’t worry; nothing is dirty; it’s all for the show! Every inch of this place is themed and decorated to ensure an eerier atmosphere permeates the entire place; even the men’s bathroom is made to look covered in filth (although the women’s washroom was spared this treatment).

#7. Get Grossed out at the Parasite Museum

Located in the suburb of Meguro, you’ll find one of the weirdest museums in the world. In this museum, you’ll be introduced to the world of parasites. And trust me, after visiting, you’ll wonder how many of them might be living inside you right now! The museum is the only one of its kind, and a few minutes into the exhibits, you might be able to imagine why. The museum has collected over 45,000 parasites, now displayed in jars along the walls. They even have an 8.8-meter-long tapeworm which proves the resiliency of these parasites. While this might not be for everyone, the uniqueness of the subject matter is something to be amazed at. And for those of you with a strong stomach, you might be pretty surprised by these creatures. I found it interesting and enjoyed the curator’s dedication to the subjects.

#8. Try Cream Puffs too Cute to Eat!

If you’re looking for something a little more fun and carefree, go to this dreamy little cafe which serves up some of the most delicious and, perhaps, too-good-to-eat pastries. If you’re a fan of anime, specifically Studio Ghibli, visiting Shirohige’s Cream Puff Factory is almost a requirement for your trip to Japan.

This cafe is run by a Ghibli family member, and her creations are therefore deemed “official” Ghibli products. Walking up to the shop is like stepping into a Ghibli film; the street looks almost picture-perfect, just like the animes. Each cream puff is made to look like the popular character “Totoro” and is filled with either custard, chocolate or caramel banana. You can make reservations here, but if you feel like the reservations system online is too complicated without being able to speak or read Japanese, you can also show up when they open and get in line to nab one of these delicious treats.

#9. Experience Cuteness Overload at a Maid Cafe

As soon as you get into Tokyo and start walking around the streets at night, you’ll immediately see dozens of maids on the road handing out flyers. If you’ve never heard of a ‘Maid Cafe‘ before, this sight might be a little strange and shocking. But the reality of these Maid Cafes is a lot less lurid than you might expect. In Japan, Maid Cafes are popular restaurants where the waitresses dress up in cute maid costumes and act as “servants” to their customers or “masters.”

Although these cafes were originally introduced for the amusement of the men in Japan, these days, they have become more of a tourist attraction. And, therefore, a little less salacious. Inside you’ll be doted on by a given maid. You’ll also eat food in adorable shapes and designs, learn cutesy songs and even take a kawaii (cute) picture with your maid as a commemorative souvenir. It’s weird, it’s cute, and it’s worth checking out for a unique experience.

#10. Dine at Ramen Restaurant from around Japan in Yokohama

Although it’s dubbed a “museum”, the experience you’ll have at the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum is more in line with a trip to Epcot. The museum is almost like visiting a food-themed amusement park which sends you back in time in tastes and visuals. The Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum was first opened in 1994 as a one-stop shop for people to sample all different varieties of Ramen. The interior of the museum is designed to replicate the streets of Japan in 1958. There are nine different restaurants open throughout the two lower floors serving up all sorts of different variations of ramen. Each one specializes in a regional flavour profile. Like travelling all across the country in one day!

#11. Dine on Sushi around a Conveyor Belt

While conveyor belt sushi restaurants have started popping up in other locations around the world, they got their start here in Japan, and if you’ve never visited one before, then this is the best place to start! Conveyor belt sushi restaurants are all over Tokyo, and you can’t go wrong with them. If there is a lineup outside the door, that is always a good sign that it’s going to be delicious! Lines move quickly since diners usually don’t spend an enormous amount of time here, so don’t be afraid of waiting.

Once you get inside, you’ll be seated around an actual moving conveyor belt. On the belt are dozens of plates with pieces of sushi on top. Each of the plates is a different colour and/or pattern. Those colours or patterns denote the cost of the sushi. Just grab what you want and keep the empty plates. The plates are used to calculate your bill at the end of the meal. The sushi is cheap and delicious, and you’ll often be more enticed into trying something new. It’s hard not to be curious when you see it right there in front of you.

#12. Cheer, Scream and Sing-a-long at a Baseball Game

Are you thinking of baseball? C’mon, now we have that in North America too! That’s not something we want to do when we’re halfway across the world. Well, trust me, this isn’t baseball as you know it. I mean, sure, yes, the rules are the same. And in essence, the game itself is pretty similar, but the experience surrounding the game is worth your time! Baseball games in Japan are like a huge party. Everyone sings a different anthem when each player comes to the plate. There are designated cheering sections where the entire group will stand, dance and cheer.

Not only are there special themed foods you can buy in the stadium, but you’re also allowed to bring any food or drink you want. That’s right, you can even bring your own alcohol! Before you arrive at the stadium, dozens of street vendors sell freshly cooked yakisoba, sushi and more to take inside with you! It’s so much fun, and you don’t need to be able to speak Japanese to be able to follow the action!

#13. See a Professional Sumo Match

Sumo wrestling is Japan’s national sport. And if you’re visiting Tokyo during the season these matches take place, it’s your duty as a traveller to make your way to see a game. Sumo is one of those things that seem not to exist outside Japan. Its traditional roots and cultural importance are so strong that it never took off anywhere else. The matches are surprisingly exciting. And the crowd is so passionate that you’ll cheer with them even if you’ve never seen a game before or understand the rules. Tickets sometimes sell out during busy times of the year, so it’s worth buying tickets in advance.

#14. Catch some Kabuki

Another very traditional thing to do in Japan is to see a Kabuki performance. Kabuki is a classical Japanese dance-drama known for its stylized performance and elaborate make-up. Despite the show being in Japanese, much like Opera, you can get a program where there will usually be a translation in English. That way you can understand a bit of the plot. But the expressions and performances are so strong and evocative that you’ll be able to follow along without it.

#15. Fish for your Dinner

Walking into Zauo restaurant, you’ll think you’ve stepped onto a fishing boat. A giant wooden ship is installed over the top of dozens of tanks of water. Guests stand excitedly with a fishing rod on the boat’s edge, ready to nab their dinner. That’s right, here at Zauo, you eat what you catch! Be warned that if you catch something, you must eat it; there’s no throwing it back. But that’s half the fun! Just don’t come in with a specific meal in mind, be open to trying something new. Once you catch your fish, you get to choose how it’s cooked and seasoned. Then it will be served at your table. The cost is probably a little inflated compared to a typical seafood restaurant, but the novelty value is real. And it’s definitely a memorable meal.

#16. Soak in the Healing Waters at Onsen

Odaiba Oedo Onsen combines a traditional Japanese onsen spa and a journey back in time. Designed to look like the Edo period, this onsen is the perfect place to unwind. Especially after your long flight! An ‘onsen’ is a Japanese hot spring and bathing facility. Here, men and women are divided into two separate areas, where they can soak in a giant, naturally heated hot spring completely in the nude. No bathing suits allowed (hence the gender separation.) You can use these small towels provided to cover your private parts. But the atmosphere is so relaxed, and no one is looking, so it feels totally normal, and you’d be surprised how freeing it feels!

The Odaiba Oedo Onsen also has a zen-like garden where you’ll find a long foot bath. To use the outdoor foot bath and gardens, you’ll put on your traditional Yukata. This part of the spa is clothed, so both men and women can use it together. Onsens are such a special part of Japanese culture. And while it seems intimidating, it’s immensely calming and a must-do for anyone visiting Japan.

*A Note about Animal Cafes

While I will readily admit that animal cafes look UBER adorable and are found on many lists of “things to do in Japan,” I see them as wildly conflicting. On my first trip to Japan, I visited an owl cafe in Asakusa, which was well-reviewed as to how they treated their animals, but after visiting, I felt awful. I had gone for a weird experience, and while it was that, I just felt so sad for the animals.

Even though I did see how loved they were by the carers, owls are nocturnal, and to have them out during the day and trapped inside felt so cruel. Various other types of animal cafes suffer from the same kind of thing, and while I know, they feel like something you NEED to do while in Japan, I would ask you to heavily consider the welfare of the animals before you think about spending time there. You can get so many weird experiences in Japan that shouldn’t be your primary destination.

You’ll often hear stories of travellers returning from their trip to Japan and going on and on about how expensive the food was. But did they just walk into the first place that had a giant English menu out front or only go to restaurants recommended by their English-speaking concierge? While it might be true that Japan is more expensive than Thailand or Vietnam, there are plenty of low-cost options you can find with a little bit of research and some exploration to boot.

#1. Street Food

Street food is one of Asia’s best-kept not-so-secret-secrets. There are hundreds of different kinds of street foods available in Japan. A simple internet search for it will reveal hundreds of results. The best thing to keep in mind when sampling street foods is to be adventurous! Dishes won’t always look or taste familiar, but I’ve almost never tried something I didn’t completely fall in love with! And the few times I didn’t like something, they never cost more than a few dollars. 

Taiyaki

Taiyaki is one of the cutest and most delicious treats to eat in Japan. The fish-shaped sweet pancake dessert is filled with all different flavours. Depending on where you are in Japan they will often have unique special fillings only available in that prefecture. The most common option is fresh red bean, but my favourite is the custard and matcha. These usually cost about $1.50 and at that price you can afford to try them all!

Takoyaki

Not to be confused with Taiyaki, Takoyaki is a fried ball of batter filled with octopus tempura, covered in green onions, pickled ginger and shaved fish flakes (which look like they’re alive as the shiver and shake atop the hot batter). These are most popular in Osaka but can be found all over Japan. Cover them with a sweet and savoury sauce for added flavour and devour before they get cold. A tray will only run you about $5, and they are surprisingly filling.

Yakisoba

If you might think a tasty noodle dish wouldn’t be something you can get on the street, you have never tried Yakisoba. These wheat noodles are fried on a large griddle and come with stir-fried pork, vegetables and served with a tangy sauce. They can be topped with various toppings like mayo, fish flakes, and pickled ginger served beside the vendor much like a hot dog vendor would serve his condiments. An entire tray will only cost $5 and is more than enough for two people to share.

Rice Cakes

Rice cakes are a quick and delicious snack served all over Japan. They are crispy and come in an assortment of flavours. You can often buy them hot off the grill and make for the perfect thing to eat while you meander. You can usually get 2-3 for under $2. 

Curry Bread

Curry Bread is one of the most delicious grab-and-go treats. It is deep fried bread, covered in additional breadcrumbs filled with curried meats. Hot, spicy and saucy, this pastry costs $1-$2 and will warm you up on a cold day.

Manju

Manju is another sweet treat you can sample almost anywhere you find street vendors. They are small, round steamed cakes filled with a variety of flavours. In Asakusa, you can sample Agemanju which are additionally coated in tempura batter and deep-fried. They will often have seasonal fillings like Sakura, plum and even pumpkin.

#2. Japanese Convenience Stores or Konbini 

While this might shock and surprise you to hear, but no word of a lie, convenience stores or Konbini as they are lovingly called in Japan, are a veritable mecca of tasty traditional Japanese foods. If you’re looking to stock up on food to eat back at your hotel while enjoying some Japanese TV (which I highly recommend), then this is the place to go. It’s also a great place to buy ingredients for your Hanami (a picnic Japanese people have during cherry blossom season to enjoy the blooming flowers).

Onigiri

The first thing you need to consider when shopping at a Japanese convenience store is their wide selection of Onigiri. Onigiri are perfectly triangular rice balls wrapped in seaweed and filled with different varieties of fish and sometimes fruit. These only cost $2 and are very filling!

Bento Box

At 7-Eleven a Bento box will cost you easily under $10 (usually under $5) and will be just as delicious as any bento you’ve ever eaten at a restaurant. Perfectly organized into neat little sections, you can get rice, pickled veggies, tempura, salmon and even a dessert all in one adorable box. If you ask for it to be heated up just say “Atsui bentō”. It tastes even better that way and is the way to go!

Fried Chicken

Lawson’s is one of the most popular convenience stores in Japan and is known for their fried chicken. While the idea of eating chicken from a convenience store in North America might send a chill down your spine – in Japan, it is a delicacy. They have different cuts on offer; honetsuki (fried bone-in chicken), honenashi (fried boneless chicken), and different flavours of kara-age (deep-fried chicken nuggets).

Drinks | Coffee, Tea, Juice and More!

Lastly, make sure you grab a few beverages to keep you hydrated throughout the day. Konbinis serve up literally hundreds of different drinks. Be sure to try Pocari Sweat, a non-carbonated sweet beverage which is advertised as an “ion supply drink” – the ideal thing to keep you going all day long. Also be sure to try a variety of the different bottled teas. You can get them iced or even hot, in the heated cabinets at the front of the store. If you are feeling like something a little harder there are dozens of different sakes to try at super low prices. 

#3. Markets

Local vendors in markets all over Japan are selling some of the greatest foods you can sample in the entire country. While it might take getting up early and making your way through fish laden alleys, you are bound to discover some real gems. Outside of the hustle and bustle of Tsukiji fish market are dozens of vendors selling cookware, ceramics and, you guessed it, food! Omelette rolls are served up on a sticks. They are a fluffy and sweet snack to grab the go. These usually cost around $2 but the fancier ones can go up to $5. I couldn’t tell the difference, so opt for the cheaper ones.

Fresh Fish

Another market food to try in Japan is unagi. Made from eel which is smoked over hot coals, the taste is smoky and sweet as it is covered in a special BBQ sauce. Unagi can be expensive but served up on skewers in the marketplace you can sample it for a low low price, usually $5-$7. 

Sea urchin is another high priced ingredient you can sample for a small price at the market. Sea urchin or uni is a creamy, salty delicacy which some people love, and some people hate. You can find freshly opened uni all over the marketplace which costs about $5 a pop.

Lots of market also sell fresh sushi trays. Like you might have back home at the supermarket. But these are going to be SUPER fresh and all sourced from local fisheries. Often if you buy the sushi from the market, they have small eating areas nearby. So even though you are paying supermarket prices you get to eat at a table!

Mochi

Mochi is Japanese rice cake made from pounding down glutinous rice, a ritual you can often see being done in the markets every day. Once the mochi is at a dough like consistency, it is shaped into balls or squares and served fresh to the shoppers. They will often be paired with seasonal ingredients like strawberries and red bean, my personal favourite. The treats only cost around $2 and are surprisingly filling.

#4. Yakitori

Izakayas are found all over Japan, from big cities to the countryside, all of which serve up fresh Yakitori! Yakitori are bit size skewers of meat (traditionally chicken), fish or veggies. You will see things on the menu like skin, liver and innards. Each skewer is cooked over charcoals and then covered in a salt or soy sauce. You can order as many different skewers as you want and typically these restaurants are a great place to save money. Each skewer will only cost about $2 so you can order lots of different options. Don’t scare away from the weirder meats, often they are prepared very well and are surprisingly delicious. They pair perfectly with a cold beer at the end of the day.

What to Order at a Yakitori

Since Yakitoris are often very small shops they will often not have English menus but here are some items to look for on the menu. Negima (ねぎま) are pieces of chicken thigh with leeks, a great combo of greasy and crispy food. Tebasaki (手羽先) are chicken wings. Torikawa (とりかわ) is chicken skin, and although it might sound strange, it’s crispy and incredible. Tsukune (つくね) are meatballs made with chicken, egg, vegetables and spices. Reba (レバー) are chicken livers and are my favourite choice!

#5. Vending Machine Ramen Restaurants

Ramen can be found all over Japan, in many different establishments, but the most popular for those looking to save a few bucks are the “button” restaurants. At these restaurants, you need only walk up to a machine and press a button to receive your ramen. All the buttons are often accompanied by pictures and prices which help non-Japanese speakers. Put your money into the slot and click the option you’d like. Once armed with your ticket, give it to the chef inside and within minutes you’ll be served up a piping hot bowl of ramen. These bowls are often only $5-$10 depending on your toppings and definitely the best meals I ate in Japan.

Ramen flavours vary from region to region, and it is best to sample the local speciality. Shio or Salt Ramen is from Hokkaido and has a lighter flavour since the broth is made from chicken bones. Miso ramen is often served with corn, butter and veggies. Tonkotsu or Pork Broth Ramen is made from, you guessed it, pork bones! It’s a thick brother and a heavier meal, so it is served with a thinner type of noodle.

#6. Gyoza

Gyoza or Japanese pork dumplings are a cheap and quick food you can get almost anywhere in Japan. Some shops are entirely dedicated to them and serve nothing else but. 6 pieces of Gyoza will often run you about $2-$3. You can get them steamed or fried, and they are filled with minced pork, shredded cabbage, and shiitake mushrooms. 

Most dumpling restaurants offer either their own mixture of dipping sauce or a variety of condiments for you to make your own. These include soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, chilli oil, and garlic. Mix them up altogether to your liking. I like mine super spicy, so I amp up the chilli oil!

#7. Soft Serve Ice Cream

If you’re looking for a delicious dessert in the summertime to help cool you down head to tow you have to swing by one of the many soft serve ice cream shops. This is a cheap option that comes in a myriad of flavours like sesame, taro root, matcha and even Ramune (a lime soda flavour). While these will only cost a few dollars their bright and colourful appearance is sure to impress all your Instagram followers. The Japanese soft serve is extra creamy, super smooth and jam-packed with flavour!

#8. Conveyor Belt Sushi

Sushi might as well be the national food of Japan. You can get sushi for as little as a few dollars a piece or as much as a hundred. Some of the most impressive chefs in the world have come to Japan to serve this traditional dish, but even the simplest hole in the wall still has access to the freshest seafood in the country. Conveyor belt sushi restaurants are an inexpensive option for anyone wanting to save a few bucks and try a myriad of options.

Once seated in front of the rotating belt, you can watch all sorts of sushi pass by, each on a separate plate which correlates to a different price point. Some are as little as $1 for two pieces and the most expensive I’d see is $5 for the highest grade of tuna. Getting to see the food before you order it is an excellent opportunity to try different varieties you might not have sampled otherwise. 

Salmon nigiri with onions and mayo might seem odd, but the combination is surprisingly delicious. Tender tuna maki comes in all different cuts for you to sample. One of the best things about these restaurants is the free green tea on every table. Just add some matcha powder into your cup and use the spout at your seat which provides hot water on command. It’s the perfect addition to any meal. There are hundreds of different places to try but some chain which are pretty reliable are Genki Sushi and Sushi Ro.

#9. Depachika

Depachika is the name for the basement floors of department stores in Japan where you’ll find world-class eateries. Unlike shopping mall food courts in North America, these food emporiums serve up restaurant quality food at food court prices. It’s almost like a culinary theme park. You can find bento, dim sum, dessert parlors and more. The more high end the department store, the higher price of the food within. So if you’re looking for a bargain, check out Shinjuku Isetan or Shibuya Takashimaya. Some of these even have a rooftop picnic area to chow down on your orders in a stunning environment at the cost of FREE.

#10. Japanese Fast Food

Finally, just like the rest of the world, Japan has some cheap fast food. But there are some unique Japanese chains which are only available to this country and offer up some incredible meals. CoCo Curry House Ichibanya is one of my favourites. Japanese curry is unlike Thai or Indian curry. It is slightly sweet and very very spicy. My favourite combination is rice with the pork curry served with a pork katsu, enoki mushrooms, garlic and cheese. This dish will cost about $10 but is a super filling dinner option, and their adorable restaurants always have manga on hand for you to read while you eat, adding to the experience.

Japanese Fast Food Restaurant Chains

MOS Burger is a burger chain serving; rice burger buns, toppings such as hot meat sauce, teriyaki burgers with mayo and burgers with Gouda cheese and butter sauce. The burger usually cost between $5-$6.

Matsuya serves cheap Japanese breakfasts if you’re looking for something traditional to eat in the morning. These cost between $4-$6 and are a great way to fill up for a long day ahead.

Wendy’s acquired the brand “First Kitchen” a few years ago, and although it might be associated with Wendys, their menus are entirely different from their North American cousins. Their lemon chicken umami burger with shredded lettuce piled high is a favourite, for only $4. Be sure to sample their fries with a variety of toppings like Burnt Double Butter Soy Sauce, Truffle, Butter Chicken and Chicken Consomme. Served alongside a Blueberry Yogurt Float, the combo of hot and cold is perfection!

#11 Ekiben

Ekibens, or bento boxes sold at train stations, are a great way to eat cheaply in Japan. Not only are they convenient for travellers on the go, but they also offer a variety of options at affordable prices. These bento boxes are often made with fresh and locally sourced ingredients, allowing you to try authentic Japanese cuisine at a fraction of the cost of eating at a restaurant. Additionally, Ekibens often include a balanced meal of rice, protein, and vegetables, making them a healthy and filling option for budget-conscious travellers.

Japan offers a plethora of delicious and budget-friendly food options that are sure to satisfy any traveler’s palate. From street food to bento boxes, there are plenty of ways to taste the country’s diverse cuisine without breaking the bank. By taking advantage of local markets, trying out standing bars and food stalls, and opting for bento boxes, you can enjoy a tasty and cost-effective trip in Japan. Remember to be adventurous with your food choices and don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.

After a few minutes walking around and searching out a spot to grab sushi, we settled on Sushi-Nova. Sushi-Nova is a restaurant where diners can enjoy sushi delivered right to their seat via a high-speed conveyor. For travellers, you’ll be pleased to hear that all their tables of four provide outlets to charge your devices and they even have free wifi! (which yes is a big deal in Japan)

When we arrived at the restaurant, we took a number and waited outside for a table to be freed up. It’s a fairly busy spot in Asakusa on the weekend, but luckily we didn’t have to wait too long. After about 20 minutes we headed inside and were seated at a large booth where we could spread out and get comfy.

me over to the table and took our drink orders and quickly explained the ordering process. There was an iPad on the table (with an English menu) where you could select whatever sushi you wanted. Once you placed your order, you waited a few minutes and then, out of the wall, would shoot out a tray on the conveyor belt that would arrive right to your booth! It was incredibly futuristic. You could order as much as you wanted, and even just one at a time to see what you liked and then only order more of that, or try something new.

The sushi was only about 100yen per piece, and surprisingly enough, it tasted great! Obviously, it’s not the best sushi in the world, but that would be too good to be true now, wouldn’t it? Their most popular items were the five-piece seasonal nigiri plate (650yen), the tempura platter (580yen), and the five-piece vegetarian sushi (500yen). There were over 150 different varieties of sushi to choose from as well as other dishes like soups, salads and noodles so they is definitely something for everyone.

While we waited for our first order of sushi to arrive, we made our green tea. At every table, and complimentary with every meal, was a hot water tap and a little container full of finely ground green tea. All you needed to do was dump a small spoonful of the powder into your glass and fill it up with the hot water. And there you have it, unlimited green tea, right at your fingertips! 

Again, very common in Japan but an absolute delight to me!

We didn’t get too many pictures here since we were so hungry, but I did get a picture of my favourite dish. It was a three piece set of fatty tuna. Each one a slightly fatty than the next. It was heaven, and you couldn’t beat the price.

You can see in the video below how cute those little trays of food are when they arrive. They play a little song every time they show up at your booth. So much fun. We could have been here all day. But there was still a line outside, and we didn’t want others to be waiting on our account. We took our time but once we were finished, we happily gave our table to the next excited customers.

Before we left for Japan, we decided that we wanted to have at least one big, blow-out meal. A dinner that would be as much of an experience as it was a culinary delicacy There are so many bucket-list sushi shops in Tokyo but based on looking thru a myriad of reviews, prices, location and availability, we decided on “Sushi Yasuda”.

Chef Naomichi Yasuda is somewhat of a household name in the industry due to his relationship with renown chef Anthony Bourdain and his feature in season 2 of the show “Parts Unknown”. But despite the notoriety, he hasn’t changed his menu, prices or the way he serves his customers in the six years he’s been back in Japan.

We made our reservations a few months in advance to ensure we were able to secure a table. We decided on a late evening reservation since it opened the rest of the day up for us and felt like the perfect way to end an evening. You only have two meal options here; the “Yasuda style Omakase” and the “14 piece sushi assortment”. Omakase means “a meal consisting of dishes selected by the chef”. With Omakase, chef Yasuda will prepare you a daily selection based on your preferences and seasonal items. He asks you both before your arrival and at dinner if you have any allergies or food aversions. Most chefs would never ask about preferences, preferring to serve what they see as the best of their cuisine but Yasuda values people individual tastes and wants each and every person, no matter how big of a savant or newbie, to have the best culinary experience possible.

The Omakase will cost you ¥12,000-¥15,000, which is rough $120, and the assortment runs ¥7800, which is around $70. One word of warning, the Omakase’s price will depend on how many pieces of sushi you eat and which fish he serves. The bigger your appetite, the rarer the fish, the bigger the bill. That being said, most people will only have a meal like this once. I held back on eating towards the end of the meal as I was afraid of the price as we ate more than was original allotted, whereas Dan ate a few more pieces and the difference on the bill was extremely minimal. If you’re there, just eat your heart out! You might spend an extra 50$ or so, but you’ll walk away feeling like you truly had an enjoyable experience. I regret holding back…but I guess that means I’ll just have to find my way back.

Being the intensely apprehensive Capricorn that I am, we arrived at least 20 minutes before our reservations. The restaurant is located in the basement of a narrow building down from the subway station. As you descend the stairs you pass by a variety of candles, incense and flowers left on each step. These are commonly seen on the front steps of houses we passed on the way in and putting them here makes you feel like you’re entering someone’s home. The restaurant itself is a modest, zen-like space, covered in blonde wood set against soft, white walls. A few small tables encircle a large counter with seats surrounding it. There was an air of calm and quiet when we arrived, and we whispered kindly to the waitresses who took our coats and asked if we’d like a cup of tea while we waited. A few people were finishing up their meal and bowed deeply to the chefs, full of smiles as they left.

Chef Yasuda greeted us with a smile as we set down and began to explain what we were in for. He asked again for our preferences, where we were front and introduced us to the other guests. It felt like a family dinner.

Chef Yasuda speaks perfect English despite growing up in Japan. In 1984 he moved to NYC to start a sushi restaurant but moved back to Japan in 2011. In NYC he owned a large restaurant and with that came a lot of responsibilities. He moved back to Japan not only to escape those duties but to start up a small, sushi restaurant where things could be simpler and made the way sushi was once served.

Before starting on dinner, we were offered drinks from the cocktail menu. Everything served here (aside from the cans of soda) are drinks favoured by Yasuda using ingredients from his hometown of Chiba. Yasuda is very proud of where he is from and showing off their produce is an important part of the restaurant. Dan chose Yasuda favourite sake, and I decided on a glass of cold green tea. A sweet-faced waitress came up to Dan with a tray full of brightly coloured glasses for his sake. They were each hand blown glass, and not one was the same as the other. Choosing your sake cup’s design and shape is as important to the drinking of sake as the elixir itself.

Yasuda starts each piece of sushi off the same way. By forming the rice. His hands work with artful precision to make each one the perfect size for the fish placed atop it. Many sushi chefs and experts will tell you that rice is 90% of what makes good sushi. Therefore finding and perfecting your rice recipe are imperative to making good sushi. Yasuda’s rice is both fluffy and textured, it has a tangy bite to it from the vinegar and alone is something truly delicious. The acidity from the rice against the creamy nature of most of the fish is the perfect combo.

Once Yasuda had prepared the sushi for each guest, he would place it on our plate and proceed to tell us about the piece of fish. He would details where it was caught, the history of this kind of sushi and even sometimes how the environment the fish was raised in would change the way the food would taste. Once he was done talking all that was left to do was eat it. You picked up the piece of sushi with your hands (no need for chopsticks) and have the option of dipping it in some soy sauce, but each piece is flavourful enough on its own that I don’t think you need it.

Yasuda loves to talk. He loves to interact with his guests and encourage people to ask questions. I asked him about his thoughts on sushi making in Japan and he talked at length about his opinions, his technique and why he left New York. He is alone behind the counter. There are no assistants, no sue chefs, no cleaners. Just him alone working on his craft. This makes his creations all the more impressive. Most other sushi restaurants have a huge staff who shops, preps and helps make the actual sushi for the customer. Here, it’s Yasuda alone.

For my Omakase, it started off with Bluefin tuna. The perfect introductory piece of sushi. Clean and simple. Next, it was onto Norwegian Sea Bass. Yasuda makes sure to use both internationally caught fish as well as local since he wants to offer his customers the best of the best, no matter where it has been caught. After the sea bass, we moved onto the Fatty Tuna. Fatty tuna is known as being one of the most chased after types of sushi. The tuna comes in more than five different levels of fattiness. The chef’s skill is shown in his preparation of the whole piece of tuna and separating it into the different cuts. “Akami” is lean part of the tuna, “chutoro” is the medium-fatty part, and the “otoro” is the highest fat cut. But even the otoro has levels of fat. There is the “kama toro” taken from the cheek and “hagashi toro” the super high-fatty tuna taken mainly from the top of the tail. Toro means “to melt”, and that is exactly what this fatty part of the tuna does. Melts in your mouth.

The raw shrimp was next. It was soft and rich, with a lemony finish.

Horse Mackeral sushi is known to be slightly bitter and often passed over by many eaters, but Yasuda freezes the fish to “cure” it, allowing the fish to become much more enjoyable. I thought it was delightfully pleasant.

Octopus has always been one of my favourite types of sushi and the one we had here was incredible. It was flavoured with lemon and topped with a splash of soy sauce. Softer and not tough or rubbery at all. A choice piece of fish.

Yellowtail and needlefish were next. The needlefish was very similar to the anago (eel) we were going to have later on in the meal. It was great to try it before having the Japanese anago to compare the two. Next up was Uni – the kind of fish I was looking forward to the most. Uni is the Japanese name for the edible part of a Sea Urchin. We told Yasuda hadn’t tried uni ever before but were excited to try a few varieties. Uni can come in a variety of colours, from deep gold to light yellow. The first type of uni was caught in California. It was light, sweet and briny and was intensely creamy. I was worried after all the hype, uni wouldn’t live up to it all but it surpassed my expectations by a landslide.

The second one we had was from Japan and Yasuda told us stories of how we went to the Tsukiji fish market every morning to make sure he found the best uni for his restaurant. This one had a much deeper flavour profile and impossibly creamy. I couldn’t believe there even was anything in the world that could taste like that. It was a revelation.

The woman beside us was genuinely afraid of the next dish that was served. But to me, it was absolute heaven. Salmon eggs, known as ikura in Japan, were cured by Yasuda himself and busted inside your mouth once you bit down. The ocean flavour explodes out and fills your entire mouth with the taste of the sea. It was surprisingly refreshing and perfectly salted.

The Hokkaido oysters served next were unique. Hokkaido’s water is freezing, resulting in a wealth of minerals deep in the ocean which is absorbed into the oysters giving them a delicious, sweet, savoury taste right out of the water. The taste was creamy and briny, these oysters we huge and every inch full of flavour.

The sweet shrimp was one of the most magnificent parts of the meal and my second favourite piece of sushi of the night. The shrimp was lightly cooked giving it a slightly firm texture which brought out the bright and sweet aroma of the shellfish.

Anago is the Japanese word for salt-water eels. If you get these in markets or other restaurants, they are usually doused in a sweet, cheap sauce, but here Yasuda cooked them atop a fire grill to give them a rich, smoky flavour and only lightly seasons them with sea salt, so you taste the trueness of the fish itself.

We finished the meal off with salmon rolls, and snow crab and Dan had one last piece (which I regret not getting) – the sea clam. Dan said the clams were one of the most outstanding pieces of the meal. With the addition of a touch of lemon and sea salt flakes, the natural flavours of the fish were brought to the surface and was the ideal way to end the night.

Although he offers us more, we couldn’t eat another bite and gave in to our full bellies. Yasuda seemed satisfied with himself as we sat there, full of his excellent cooking. We thanked him kindly for such an enjoyable evening full of stories and laughter. Yasuda was kind enough to take a photo with us before we left to commemorate the evening. He flexed his biceps, he was once a famous boxer and still to this day retains those impressive muscles – which he is very proud of as well. His smile was beaming, and you can see by the look on his face how much joy that feeding us gives him. Some people have been known to be put off by Yasuda’s attitude, he can be a bit cocky and judgemental of other sushi places, but he is truly a beautiful soul and cares deeply about the history and craft of Japanese sushi making. We were touched to have been able to taste a piece of his artistry and take with us the memories of those impeccable piece of sushi.
