Oh Brenda, thank you so much for sharing this with me and my readers. I lost my mother to cancer in 2022 as well and know the heartbreak of watching someone you love go through the pain that is cancer. My mother couldn’t travel but she so desperately wanted to go to France one last time, so I’m filled with joy to hear this story and am amazed at your dedication and love for your friend, taking her on the kind of journey I know would have meant everything to her. If you see this response please let me know a charity that you think Judith would have loved and I would like to donate some of the proceeds from this post to it, in her name <3

I’m so enjoying your articles and this site. I was in Arles too briefly in June 2022 with my dear friend and frequent travel companion who was retracing her youthful memories of studying in Montpellier in 1965. She had metastatic cancer and was not terribly mobile so we rented a car and drove from Paris to Giverny and to Amboise, down through the south (Aigues Mortes, Carcassonne, Albi, Nimes) and up to Dijon, visiting as many places as her health allowed. When we parked in Arles, right below the arena, she rested in the car while I walked around the arena, watching the cats, and briefly explored the neighborhood. Although I’m a lover of Van Gogh and of Roman history, I hadn’t expected we’d be able to stop there. I wish I’d seen your article before we departed – it would have made our visit richer! This was our penultimate trip; in August we went to Greece and Croatia, where she passed suddenly. Traveling (and her Irish setters) thrilled her soul and kept her alive longer than anyone had hoped. Thank you for giving me space to share memories of my dear Judith, a true Francophile, and to read your wonderful and generous insights.
