All over the city, you’ll see advertisements and flyers for “flamenco shows” that come with paella and a front-row seat. But let’s just say… they’re more tourist spectacle than authentic expression. These performances are often polished, staged, and designed to check a box, not stir the soul. Real flamenco, the kind that belongs to Seville, comes from deep emotion, not a dinner menu. You’ll find them all over the tourist center, especially near the Cathedral or along Calle Mateos Gago. Places like El Palacio Andaluz or El Patio Sevillano. And sure, the dancers are skilled, the costumes are elaborate, but the emotion feels flattened. You’re clapping on cue between bites of overcooked paella, watching from a distance instead of feeling part of it. But real flamenco isn’t meant to be comfortable. It’s not a show, it’s a release.

Instead, Catch an Authentic Performance at La Carbonería

Instead, head to La Carbonería, tucked behind an unassuming gate in what used to be an old coal warehouse. The place is raw, atmospheric, and deeply local, no frills, no fanfare. You grab a drink at the bar, find space on a wooden bench, and wait. Then, with the first strum of the guitar, the whole room falls silent. There’s no velvet curtain, no dramatic lighting, just a singer with a voice like cracked earth and a dancer who pulls thunder from the floorboards. The crowd doesn’t need instructions; they know when to clap, when to shout, and when to let the silence carry the weight. It’s not just a performance, it’s a pulse, a memory, a feeling that lodges itself somewhere in your chest and stays there long after the last note fades. Photography is prohibited during the performances, which helps everyone stay fully present, letting the emotion hit without distraction, and allowing the experience to unfold without a screen between you and the art.

Don’t Stress about Visiting the Royal Alcázar

The Royal Alcázar is breathtaking. Moorish arches layered with centuries of history, ceilings carved like lace, tiled walls in impossible colours, and gardens that seem to hum with quiet. It’s no doubt one of Seville’s crown jewels, and for good reason. But here’s the honest part: the crowds can drain it of its magic. It’s hard to marvel at the craftsmanship when you’re being herded from courtyard to courtyard, shoulder to shoulder with tour groups, dodging selfie sticks, and glancing over someone’s shoulder just to glimpse the Patio de las Doncellas. And if you don’t book ahead? You might not even get in. Tickets often sell out days in advance, especially in spring and summer. But don’t be discouraged.

Instead, Discover hidden gems like Palacio de las Dueñas

If you’re craving that same architectural beauty but with actual space to breathe, head to Palacio de las Dueñas. Tucked away behind a discreet gate in the Macarena district, this palace isn’t just a substitute for the Alcázar, it’s a quieter, more intimate alternative that holds its own kind of magic. The architecture still stuns: delicate Mudéjar arches, sun-warmed tiles, wrought iron balconies, and frescoed ceilings. But unlike the Alcázar, there’s no crush of tour groups or roped-off detours. You can wander at your own pace, pause wherever you like, and let the stillness sink in.

Palacio de las Dueñas feels warmer, more personal. It was a private residence until fairly recently, and you can sense that someone actually lived here. It’s where poetry lingers, literally. Antonio Machado, one of Spain’s most beloved poets, was born in one of its rooms. His words echo through the shaded courtyards and tiled passageways, grounding the space in memory and emotion. Orange trees bloom in the gardens, casting flickering shadows over stone paths. Fountains trickle softly. There’s a rhythm to the place that invites you to slow down, maybe sit for a while, maybe listen to the silence.

Don’t Underestimate the Heat in Summer

So if you’re visiting in July or August, brace yourself. Seville isn’t just “hot” in summer. It’s record-breaking, pavement-melting, don’t-even-think-about-jeans kind of hot. Temperatures often climb well above 40°C (that’s over 100°F), and the heat doesn’t let up just because you’re trying to enjoy a palace or snap photos at Plaza de España. Sightseeing at midday? Not fun. Not romantic. Just sweaty and slightly surreal. Locals know this. That’s why everything slows down. Shops close. People disappear indoors. The city holds its breath till sunset.

Instead, Plan Around it

The best way to survive it? Wake up early. Seriously early. Set your alarm for sunrise and start your day before 8am if you want to do any real exploring. Most sights open by 9 or 10, and by 11am, the heat begins to take hold. You’ll want to be wrapping up anything outdoors by then.

Midday is not sightseeing time; it’s siesta time. This is when you retreat indoors. Find a shaded patio, a breezy tiled café, or a museum with good air conditioning (shoutout to the Museo de Bellas Artes). Linger over lunch in the cool, drink slowly, order something refreshing like salmorejo or a cold cerveza. Better yet, go back to your hotel or rental and nap. Yes, really. Locals aren’t lazy; they’re smart.

Carry a refillable water bottle, and refill it at the many public fountains (potable water is safe in Seville). Bring a foldable fan (you’ll thank yourself), wear linen, and skip dark clothes that cling. Wide-brimmed hats or umbrellas aren’t just stylish; they’re necessary. Don’t try to “tough it out”, you’ll end up dizzy, cranky, and missing the joy of being in Seville altogether.

Don’t: Pay full price for the Setas

Las Setas, officially known as Metropol Parasol, is one of Seville’s most unexpected landmarks. Rising out of Plaza de la Encarnación like a cluster of giant wooden mushrooms, or some kind of space-age waffle canopy, it doesn’t exactly fit in with the city’s Gothic spires and Mudéjar tiles. But maybe that’s the point. It’s bold, modern, and surprisingly beautiful in its own way, especially when the light hits it just right or when the city unfolds beneath it at golden hour.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I assumed it would be another overhyped tourist trap, cool from a distance, but not much else. But the views from the top? They’re incredible. A sweeping 360-degree panorama of the Seville skyline, from La Giralda to distant rooftops, bathed in soft Andalusian light. It was actually one of the more memorable moments of the trip.

That said, the ticket they try to sell you is around €16 and includes a mostly-empty underground museum with flashing lights and historical projections that don’t quite land. It felt like filler, bells and whistles added to justify the price tag, not to enhance the experience.

Instead, Ask for the “Mirador Only”

What most people don’t realize is there’s a cheaper ticket, just a few euros, that gets you straight to the top for the panoramic walkway and skyline view. Ask for the “mirador only” option at the ticket counter; this type of ticket is not available online, as it’s only for those in the know!

Don’t: Only Visit the Seville Cathedral

Yes, the Seville Cathedral is massive. Historic. Impressive. You walk up to it and can’t help but be struck by the sheer scale, vaulted ceilings that rise like cliffs, golden altars that shimmer in the dim light, side chapels tucked into shadowy corners. And La Giralda, the former minaret-turned-bell tower, absolutely delivers with sweeping views across Seville’s tiled rooftops.

But to be honest? The interior can feel a bit… empty. A bit too grand. Like it’s trying to overwhelm rather than move you. There’s beauty, yes, but it’s the kind that keeps you at a distance. Majestic, but not intimate. And with an entry fee of 13€ and tickets often selling out in high season, it’s worth knowing that there are other places in Seville that are just as architecturally rich, far less crowded, and completely free.

Instead, Seek out the smaller, soul-stirring chapels instead

Some of Seville’s smaller churches, like Iglesia de Santa María la Blanca or San Luis de los Franceses, actually feel more alive than the Cathedral. They may not tower over the skyline or draw the same crowds, but step inside and you’ll feel something shift. Iglesia de Santa María la Blanca is small but rich with history. Originally a synagogue, then a mosque, then a church, it’s layered with centuries of transformation, and you can feel it in the walls. The arches still hint at Islamic geometry, while the Baroque ceiling swirls with stucco vines and cherubs.

Then there’s San Luis de los Franceses, a tucked-away baroque marvel that practically explodes with gold leaf and sculptural detail. From the outside, it’s unassuming. Inside, it’s theatrical. Domes overhead seem to float, and the altars are so intricate they almost look like stage sets. But it doesn’t feel performative, it feels intense, emotional, like you’ve walked into a moment that’s been unfolding for hundreds of years. And because it’s rarely crowded, you can actually hear your own footsteps, feel your breath slow, take it all in without being rushed along.

Don’t: Eat on Avenida de la Constitución

Sure, the cathedral views are nice along the Avenida de la Constitución, the street is wide and grand, lined with outdoor terraces and framed by some of Seville’s most iconic landmarks. But sit down at one of those cafés along Avenida de la Constitución, and you’ll quickly notice the trade-off. The food is overpriced and forgettable, microwaved tortillas, rubbery croquetas, sangria made with cheap wine, and you’re mostly paying for the proximity to La Giralda, not for what’s on your plate. Worse still? You’ll likely be interrupted mid-bite by a steady stream of street hustlers and scam artists who roam from table to table.

Instead, Wander into the backstreets of Alfalfa

But if you’re hungry and looking for something real, skip the tourist traps near the Cathedral and wander toward the Alfalfa neighbourhood. Tucked into narrow, buzzing streets, this area has a more lived-in energy, still central, but with an edge of grit and soul. Start with Bar Alfalfa, a tiny, always-busy corner spot beloved by locals and travellers who’ve done their homework. It’s known for creative small plates, generous wines by the glass, and a cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s kitchen than a restaurant. Just a few minutes away is Bar El Rincón, a no-frills spot with classic Sevillano charm, ceramic-tiled walls, cold beer, and solid, straightforward tapas that hit the spot. And for something a little more traditional but still atmospheric, try La Bodega de la Alfalfa, where locals gather over plates of salmorejo, flamenquín, and croquetas that taste like home. The beauty of this neighbourhood is that it invites you to linger, or to hop from one bar to the next, piecing together a night one tapa at a time.

Don’t: Ride in a horse-drawn carriage

The horse-drawn carriages that line up near the Cathedral and along Avenida de la Constitución might look romantic, like something out of a postcard. The horses wear little plumes, the drivers call out in multiple languages, and the glossy carriages click across the cobblestones like something out of another time. But here’s the truth: it’s not as charming as it seems. In fact, it’s one of the most touristy and ethically questionable experiences in Seville. The horses often spend long hours standing in the direct sun, especially in the brutal heat of summer. While regulations do exist, enforcement can be inconsistent, and there’s growing local concern about the welfare of the animals. Many of these horses are working full days with minimal shade, little rest, and constant exposure to noise, crowds, and traffic. It’s uncomfortable to witness once you start paying attention, and impossible to unsee afterward.

Instead, bike through María Luisa Park

Rather than putting those beautiful horses at risk, hop on a bike instead! Glide beneath the dappled shade of Parque de María Luisa, where tall palms and jacarandas sift sunlight into shifting patterns. Begin at the grand Plaza de España, all tiled bridges and gentle moat, then drift deeper into the park as the formality softens. Ivy-rimmed fountains appear around quiet corners, mosaic benches hide under arches of bougainvillea, and half-shadowed sculptures wait to be found. Peacocks strut, parakeets chatter, and every turn feels like a small discovery. The park stretches wide, full of orange trees, jacarandas, palm-lined promenades, and winding dirt paths that lead to secret fountains. You might stumble on the Fountain of the Frogs, where ceramic frogs spit water into the basin, or the Lion Fountain, tucked into a quiet courtyard framed by tiled benches and vine-covered pergolas.

Don’t Rush Through the Plaza de España

Don’t make the mistake of treating Plaza de España like just another photo op. Too many people do a quick spin around the moat, snap a selfie on the stairs, glance at a couple of tiled alcoves, and then rush off to the next “must-see.” But when you rush it, you miss what makes this place extraordinary. Yes, it’s cinematic. The symmetry is Wes Anderson-level perfect, and yes, parts of Star Wars were filmed here, but there’s so much more beneath the surface. Don’t breeze through. Don’t reduce it to content. Let it surprise you.

Instead, Slow down and Soak it in

Instead, take your time and let the Plaza unfold slowly. The tiled alcoves representing each of Spain’s provinces aren’t just decorative; they tell stories. Every one is different, illustrating historical moments, local legends, and regional maps in vivid hand-painted detail. Walk the full semicircle and you’ll start to spot artistic quirks and even bits of political history hiding in plain sight. Don’t just cross the bridges, pause on them. There are four, symbolizing the ancient kingdoms of Spain, and each one is lined with beautifully glazed ceramic balustrades worth admiring up close.

Step into the shaded arcade behind the alcoves and you’ll find a quieter side of the plaza, with cool tiled benches, patterned ceilings, and the occasional street musician whose guitar echoes softly through the arches. Most people walk straight past the central fountain, but if you stop, you’ll notice the way the water mirrors the plaza’s perfect geometry and catches the changing light. And all around, especially beneath your feet, are hidden details: ceramic plaques, patterned floor tiles, even little symbols worked into the legs of benches. On the right day, you might stumble across an impromptu flamenco guitarist playing to the open air. It’s these small, often-overlooked moments that make the Plaza de España feel less like a set piece and more like a living, breathing part of the city.

Don’t: Order Raciones or Medias

In many Spanish bar, especially in Seville, you need to be mindful of how you order, particularly when you’re aiming for a traditional tapas experience. As a tourist, it’s easy to assume that any dish served in a “tapas bar” will automatically be small and shareable. But that’s not always the case. If you’re hoping to wander from spot to spot, tasting little bites along the way, you’ll want to make sure you’re actually ordering tapas, not a ración or even a media ración. A ración is a full-sized plate, meant for proper sit-down meals or for sharing with a larger group. A media ración is a half portion, still too big if you’re just looking for a few bites. Both will fill you up quickly and rack up a bigger bill than you might expect.

Insead, Ask Specifically if they Offer Tapas Portions

Instead, to keep things light and flexible, always ask, “¿Tienen tapas?” before ordering. Not every bar offers them, and some only serve tapas at the bar, not at the tables. But asking that one question can mean the difference between a full meal and the kind of casual, hop-from-bar-to-bar experience that makes eating in Seville so memorable.

Don’t: Order sangria like a tourist

Look, sangria has its place. It’s fruity, cold, and looks great in a photo with a slice of orange hanging off the rim. But in Sevillee, locals don’t really drink it and what you’ll usually get if you order it in the city center is a premixed batch made with cheap red wine, sugary fruit juice, maybe a splash of brandy, and often something like Fanta to give it fizz. It’s overly sweet, flat, and honestly, more about the idea of Spain than the actual culture. In reality, sangria is mostly reserved for big gatherings, family barbecues, beach holidays, and festivals. It’s something people might throw together in a pitcher at home in the summer, not what they order at a bar or with tapas. It’s just not part of daily drinking culture in Andalusia the way people imagine.

Instead, Try Vino de Naranja or Manzanilla

Instead, lean into the drinks Sevillanos actually sip. Vino de naranja is a Sevillian favourite: sweet white wine infused with bitter orange peel. It’s smooth, citrusy, and served cold, like liquid sunset in a glass.
Or try a chilled glass of manzanilla, a pale, dry sherry from Sanlúcar de Barrameda, breezy and slightly salty from the sea air where it’s aged. It’s the kind of drink that quietly cuts through the heat and pairs perfectly with salty almonds or jamón.

Don’t Just Stay in the Historic Quarter

It’s tempting to stay within the ancient center. It has everything: the cathedral, the Alcázar, flamenco shows, and rooftop bars with perfect sunset views. It’s all concentrated in a few walkable blocks that feel like a living postcard. But the truth is, parts of it can feel more like a stage set than a real neighbourhood. Sure, the buildings are beautiful, but the experience can start to feel curated for tourists. You’ll see menus in six languages, souvenir shops on every corner, and horse-drawn carriages looping endlessly through the same streets.

Instead, visit Triana and explore the real soul of Seville

Instead, make the effort to cross Puente de Isabel II into Triana, where you’ll find the real local heart of Seville. This is not only a quaint neighbourhood, it’s historically rich. The cradle of flamenco legends, homes to ancient pottery- and tile-making families, and dotted with tiny bars where flamenco is not staged, it’s just a given. Wander Calle Betis for riverfront views and tapas with locals. Visit Triana Market for salt cod, olives, or a strong coffee under ceramic arches. Duck into Cerámica Santa Ana or the Centro Cerámica Triana to see where azulejos were born.

Seville is a city best experienced by knowing what to skip and what to seek out. Avoid the tourist traps, the overpriced sangria, the carriage rides, the rushed flamenco shows, and lean into the things that feel more real. Wander slowly, ask for tapas, drink what the locals drink, and give yourself time to actually feel the place. With a few smart don’ts, you open the door to a much better do.

History

From the minute I stepped inside this palace, I was captivated by how Casa de Pilatos tells its own story through stone, tile, and light. In 1483, amid the Spanish Inquisition’s crackdown on secret practitioners of Judaism and Islam, a wealthy “Pedro the Executor” was condemned and his prime urban properties seized. Those plots were highly valued, largely because they tapped into the coveted Caños de Carmona aqueduct. At such a large sum, only one of the city’s richest families could afford it, and they were eventually sold off to Don Pedro Enríquez, Andalusia’s chief governor.

Mudéjar Architecture

With its horseshoe arches and intricate plasterwork, that original courtyard pulsed with both Christian and Islamic artistry. Don Pedro and his wife, Doña Catalina de Ribera, soon transformed the site into a Mudejar-style palace centered on a cool, tiled courtyard. Mudéjar art is characterized by elaborate geometric patterns, colorful glazed tilework, and finely carved wood and plaster, it reflects the craftsmanship of Muslim artisans working in Christian-ruled Spain between the 13th and 16th centuries.

Renaissance Architecture Era

After Catalina’s death in 1505, their son, Don Fadrique Enríquez de Ribera, began layering in Italian Renaissance touches. He added graceful Corinthian columns, broad classical porticoes, and coffered domes he’d glimpsed in Italy and on his pilgrimage to Jerusalem, along with signature spaces like the Hall of Pretorio and the Golden Room.

Three decades later, his nephew Per Afán de Ribera enlisted Neapolitan architect Benvenuto Tortello to add even more Renaissance flourishes. The Duke of Alcalá, inspired by his travels in Naples, installed a grotto which he tucked into the gardens and brought with him a trove of classical sculptures to sprinkle through the galleries. Today, the Casa de Pilatos is one of the best examples of a two-level “doble casa” design: cool, tile-lined summer apartments on the ground floor framed by Mudéjar accents, and a cozier, tapestry-adorned winter residence above, all connected by grand staircases.

By the 17th century, Casa de Pilatos had become Seville’s own Renaissance salon, a place where poets, painters, and philosophers gathered beneath sun-drenched courtyards and even where Francisco Pacheco, Velázquez’s mentor, painted sumptuous ceilings. Then, during the 19th-century Romantic revival, the Dukes of Medinaceli (especially the Duchess of Denia) lovingly restored its interiors, weaving dreamy, picturesque details back into the palace.

Zaquizami’s Corridor

Once inside the palace, your first stop is the Small Garden, reached by passing through the Zaquizamí Corridor. The name “Zaquizamí” comes from the Arabic sáqf fassamí, meaning “fragile roof” or “roof in the sky.” As you walk along this passageway, you’ll notice three beautifully crafted Renaissance iron grilles, as well as fragments of ancient Roman plasterwork embedded into the walls like a mosaic of antiquity.

Jardín Chico, Small Garden

This intimate corner of Casa de Pilatos, called the Jardín Chico (Small Garden), was one of the final additions made by Don Fadrique, the first Marquess of Tarifa, in 1539. Unlike the larger, more public Jardín Grande, this secluded space was designed purely for his private retreat, blending Renaissance ideals of nature and architecture in perfect harmony. Between 1910 and 1920, the garden was expanded to its current footprint by demolishing modest ancillary structures. It now showcases several Roman sculptures from the first Duke of Alcalá’s collection, alongside later additions.

Water flows gently through fountains and channels, symbolizing life and purity while adding a soothing soundtrack to your stroll. In a city where water was once scarce and fiercely controlled, the very presence of these lush spaces spoke volumes about the status and privilege of their owners. Casa de Pilatos was among the few private residences in Seville granted access to “standing water”, a direct supply from the ancient Roman Caños de Carmona aqueduct. Originally reserved for the Alcázar gardens and public fountains, this Crown-controlled resource was rarely extended to individuals. By the late 15th century, only about twenty estates in the city held this privilege, making private gardens a mark of distinction. The remains of the aqueduct can still be seen nearby, a quiet reminder of this once-coveted luxury.

Bacchus Fountain

At the garden’s heart lies a star-shaped tiled pond, an early 20th-century Neo-Mudéjar installation, whose fountain is topped by Mariano Benlliure’s 1900 bronze of a youthful Bacchus. Nearby, a Renaissance‐style Eros holding a bird offers a playful nod to classical antiquity.

Even in the heat of the August sun, this garden explodes with colour! I couldn’t believe the kind of plants and flowers that could survive in this heat, but visiting this palace in the Spring when all the roses are blooming would be magical.

The Golden Room

At the far end of the garden, a discreet doorway leads into the Golden Room. The moment you step inside, it’s clear how the space earned its name, the brilliant yellow walls wrap around you like a warm, golden cocoon. The Golden Room, with its richly gilded wooden ceiling, was one of the Marquess’s final projects before his death.

The room also houses significant Roman relics from the collection of the first Duke of Alcalá, including two impressive reliefs commemorating Augustus’s victory at Actium.

Just outside the Golden Room, a Renaissance weapons trophy pays homage to Roman military imagery, modeled after scenes from Trajan’s Column. According to legend, the III Duke of Alcalá once brought Emperor Trajan’s ashes back from Rome in an alabaster urn. But in a strange twist, a maid accidentally spilled them into the garden. As the story goes, the emperor now rests among the orange trees of Casa de Pilatos.

Hall of Pretoria, Praetor’s Room

Named the Praetor’s Room to evoke the biblical palace of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem, this impressive 132-square-meter rectangular hall occupies the east wing, aside the main courtyard. Constructed between 1526 and 1539 during Don Fadrique Enríquez de Ribera’s sweeping renovations, it helped complete the courtyard’s symmetrical, four-sided enclosure. Don Fadrique spared no expense to make this one of the palace’s most lavish rooms.

The room’s decorative richness is remarkable. Along the lower walls, bold tilework produced using the innovative cuenca (basin) technique creates a striking skirting. The spaces between the tilework and ceiling are filled with delicate stucco reliefs, blending Arabic inscriptions, vegetal motifs (atauriques), and miniature architectural forms. Two mullioned windows flank the entrance, flooding the room with light and highlighting the blend of Islamic and Renaissance influences that define Casa de Pilatos.

Mudéjar taracea

It is the only space that preserves all of its original features, including exquisite Mudéjar-style doors and windows crafted in exquisite mudéjar taracea carpentry. Taracea is a traditional Spanish form of inlay, crafted from small pieces of differently colored woods and other fine materials, carefully arranged to form elaborate geometric patterns. The craftsmanship is especially evident in the massive five-meter doors that once sealed the hall and the ante-chapel. These monumental gates feature identical ornamentation on both sides, with the Our Father inscribed on the interior and the Creed on the exterior, rendered in Gothic cursive.

Equally impressive is the coffered ceiling, also by Andrés de Juara, composed of five rows of square panels inspired by Classical Antiquity. This design echoes the architectural logic of the Pantheon’s dome in Rome, a model Don Fadrique likely encountered during his pilgrimage through Italy. Yet, despite its classical structure, the ceiling is adorned with distinctly mudéjar elements: interwoven lacería patterns and mocárabes (stalactite-style prisms), revealing a deep connection to local craftsmanship and a continued admiration for the ornamental splendour of the Alcázar.

Central to the ceiling’s composition are eight heraldic shields, proudly aligned along the main axis. These emblems celebrate the Enríquez de Ribera family’s noble heritage and their powerful marital ties to some of Castile’s most prestigious lineages, including the Mendoza, Quiñones, Figueroa, Portocarrero, and Toledo families, testaments to their rising social and political stature in Renaissance Spain.

Main Patio & Courtyard

The original design of the main courtyard at Casa de Pilatos, commissioned by Pedro Enríquez and his wife Catalina de Ribera, followed a U-shaped layout with distinct Mudéjar elements. In 1526, their son Don Fadrique Enríquez de Ribera initiated major renovations that reshaped this central space, around which both floors of the palace are organized. He added the corridor and gallery beside the Praetor’s Room, supported by marble Corinthian columns with “claw” bases and “ponytail” capitals, which were in vogue at the time.

Despite the diversity of styles, the patio achieves a remarkable harmony. It reflects the eclectic nature of early 16th-century Sevillian architecture, blending Mudéjar, Gothic, and Renaissance elements. The stucco arches and tiled baseboards draw from Islamic traditions, while the asymmetrical arches and geometric upper balustrade nod to Gothic and Mudéjar craftsmanship. The proportions of the courtyard itself, along with the imported Genoese columns and fountain, firmly anchor it in the Renaissance.

Patio Fountain

The fountain in the main patio is a statement piece of Renaissance elegance set against a Mudéjar backdrop. Carved in 1529 by the Genoese workshop of Aprile da Carona, it’s sculpted from polished Carrara marble and rises more than four meters high. Its design consists of two basins, the lower, square-within-a-circle “cup,” and above it a circular “sea”, linked by a central pedestal supported on four downward-gazing dolphins. Atop this rises a striking bust of Janus, the two-faced Roman god of transitions, whose dual profiles symbolize the passage between past and future.

Athena de Medici Statue

In the northwest corner of the main courtyard, your eye will quickly be drawn to the Medici-style statue of Athena, the crown jewel of Per Afán de Ribera’s sculpture collection. This impressive figure is a 2nd-century Roman copy of a Greek original, thought to date back to around 435 BC. The term “Medici” refers to statues that mirror the pose of the colossal nine-meter bronze Athena created by the legendary sculptor Phidias for the Acropolis, which was sadly lost when it was destroyed in Constantinople in 1203. What makes this version at Casa de Pilatos truly extraordinary is that it’s the only known Medici-type Athena that still retains its original Roman head.

Judges’ Resting Room

Behind the statue of Athean, you can enter the Salón de Descanso de los Jueces (Judges’ Resting Room). Many of the rooms in Casa de Pilatos are named in reference to the Passion of Christ, a tradition that emerged after the Marquis of Tarifa’s pilgrimage to Jerusalem and his creation of a dramatic Vía Crucis (Way of the Cross) within the palace grounds. This theatrical devotion influenced not only the route itself but the naming of the rooms, such as the Judges’ Resting Room, which takes its name from a biblical reference to the 71 members of the Sanhedrin of Israel who judged Christ before the Passion.

Despite its symbolic name, the space originally served as the palace’s antechapel, leading into the nearby oratory through a segmental arch. This arch is one of Casa de Pilatos’ most refined examples of stucco craftsmanship, delicately blending Mudéjar and Isabelline Gothic designs and crowned with a frieze of eleven lobed lattice windows.

The Flagellation Chapel

Peaking through the open door, you can take a glimpse inside the Flagellation Chapel. The Flagellation Chapel is the only space in Casa de Pilatos built in the Gothic style, even though it dates from the same period as the rest of the palace. Gothic architecture, with its pointed arches and ribbed vaults, was strongly associated with Christian worship, making it ideal for designating sacred spaces within otherwise secular residences. In the chapel, the ribs of the twin vaults rest on carved brackets featuring angelic figures, while a pointed arch window on the western wall reveals that the space once opened to the outside, before being enclosed by later additions.

Inside, a rose-jasper column at the center recalls the pillar to which Christ was bound during his flagellation, hence the chapel’s name. Over the altar sits a fourth-century white-marble Good Shepherd statue, a paleochristian adaptation of Hermes.

The chapel preserves examples of the earlier and more labor-intensive cuerda seca (dry rope) method of tiel work, introduced by Muslim artisans in the 13th century and perfected by Mudejars in the 15th. This technique involved outlining designs with waxy lines that separated vibrant glazes, creating brilliant contrasts in colours like blue, green, white, and amber.

The entrance to the chapel still preserves its original polychrome wooden doors from the late 15th century, adorned with the coats of arms of the Enríquez and Sotomayor families.

Pilates Cabinet

Exiting from the northern end of the Resting Room, you enter the Pilates Cabinet. This ceremonial room was modelled after the traditional qubba structures introduced to the Iberian Peninsula. The qubba, a hallmark of Islamic architecture, is defined by its square base that forms a cube-like volume, typically topped with domes, vaults, or coffered ceilings that symbolically evoke the heavens. Positioned with direct access to the main courtyard, its richly layered decoration reflects this room’s ceremonial role, featuring vibrant cuenca-style tiles that climb the walls.

The most impressive part of this room is its ceiling. This stunning, staggered ornamental ceiling, inspired by Mudejar design, was crafted and installed before the death of Catalina de Ribera in 1505. Square in shape and golden in hue, the delicate wooden coffered ceiling evokes the structure of a celestial dome. At its center lies a carved grotesque, encircled by dozens of ten-pointed stars. The larger stars rest on pineapple-shaped muqarnas clusters, a striking decorative element, while the smaller stars are rendered in subtle bas-relief, creating a rich visual contrast across the surface.

The Bearded Woman

In the room adjacent to the Pilates Cabinet, you’ll find a smaller chamber housing a reproduction of The Bearded Woman, a striking masterpiece by the Valencian Baroque painter José de Ribera. Ribera, like Caravaggio, is known for his dramatic use of chiaroscuro. The original work, part of the Fundación Casa Ducal de Medinaceli collection, is currently on loan to the Prado Museum in Madrid.

This powerful and unconventional Baroque portrait challenges traditional ideas of gender, beauty, and motherhood. Painted in 1631, it depicts Magdalena Ventura, a woman with a rare hormonal condition that caused excessive facial hair growth, shown confidently breastfeeding her infant. Ribera presents her with dignity and strength, emphasizing her direct gaze and monumental presence, as if she were a classical matriarch or a saint. A carved inscription beside her explains her condition, treating her as a marvel of nature rather than a figure of ridicule.

The Large Garden

From the back of this room, you can exit out into the pièce de résistance of the Casa de Pilatos; the Large Garden. Formerly an orchard, this space was reimagined in the late 1500s as an elegant archaeological garden. In Renaissance Seville, gardens were far more than greenery; they were living museums. The first Duke of Alcalá, who, after serving as Viceroy of Naples, returned with a collector’s eye and a passion for classical sculpture. Inspired by Italian villa gardens, he tasked engineer Benvenuto Tortello with transforming the old orchard into an “archaeological” landscape.

Inspired by Bramante’s Cortile delle Statue in Rome, Tortello added an L-shaped gallery of Roman-style loggias, semi-open arcades supported by columns and blind arches, with niches and recessed circular cavities crafted to display the Duke of Alcalá’s Neapolitan sculpture collection. Turning each niche into a carefully composed art display.

This “archaeological garden” approach integrated art directly into the architecture, earning high praise among Seville’s cultural elite and influencing local taste for decades. In the garden’s western corner, Tortello added a Mannerist grotto featuring a pebbled portal that shelters a 16th-century marble Sleeping Venus. Scholars believe that when the grotto was reimagined, its designers drew inspiration from the famous Sleeping Nymph (often called “Cleopatra”) in the Vatican’s Belvedere. That Hellenistic masterpiece had set a Renaissance trend for fountains graced by slumbering figures, and Casa de Pilatos’s nymph faithfully follows that elegant tradition.

At the heart of the garden stands an octagonal Renaissance marble fountain, crafted by the Aprile workshop. Its elegant shape is adorned with ceramic tiling and evokes the aesthetic of Mudejar-inspired grotto design.

Hall of Columns

Enter the main courtyard again and make your way into the Hall of Columns, a long, rectangular gallery that, true to its name, was originally conceived as an exhibition space for classical architectural fragments, primarily ancient marble columns. These were part of the collection of the Dukes of Alcalá. Its simple, unadorned walls and high, flat ceiling provide a calm, almost contemplative backdrop, allowing the eye to focus on the rhythm and craftsmanship of each pillar.

Tiles

Return to the patio courtyard and take a minute to study the tiles that cover every inch of the walls. Casa de Pilatos holds one of Spain’s most impressive collections of azulejos, with over 150 unique tile patterns created by master artisans Diego and Juan Pulido. These tiles adorn the walls of the palace’s main courtyard, ground-floor reception rooms, and monumental staircase, covering more than 1,200 square meters. The tiled zócalos (skirtings) are a vibrant blend of Islamic, geometric, and nature-inspired designs.

Most of the tiles were produced using the cuenca or basin technique, a 16th-century innovation that used moulds to imprint decorative outlines onto soft clay, making large-scale production possible. Each tile measures 13 by 13 centimetres, and historical records show that in 1538, the first Marquess of Tarifa commissioned Juan Pulido to deliver 2,000 tiles weekly, with steep penalties for delays.

Grand Staircase

This evolving tilework is especially striking along the palace’s grand staircase, the first monumental staircase in Seville. Designed in the 1530s as a symbol of Renaissance grandeur, it replaced a modest medieval spiral stair and became a dramatic transition between the public courtyard and the noble upper chambers. Lavishly decorated with tiles and crowned by an intricate dome reminiscent of the Hall of Ambassadors in the Alcázar, the staircase exemplifies the palace’s embrace of both Mudejar ornamentation and Renaissance ceremony.

The dome itself, an architectural rarity. It begins with a radiant twelve-pointed star at its center. From there, an intricate web of golden geometric patterns radiates outward. The dome rests on a base adorned with heraldic symbols and elegant, golden mocarabes, which are stalactite-like carvings. An octagonal crown frames the family coats of arms of the Marquess’s ancestors.

Winter Palace

The staircase leads to the upper floors of the Winter Palace. This area requires a special admission price and I think it’s missable in favour of spending more time in the rest of the palace. Much of the residential section was lost during 19th and 20th-century renovations, and therefore, much of what you see upstairs is reproductions.

Mounting Block & Stables

The final two areas to explore within the palace lie on the western side, just beyond a wrought iron gate installed in 1861. This gate closes off the archway leading into the main patio, and at its center, you’ll notice the finely crafted coat of arms of the House of Enríquez, seamlessly woven into the design.

The mounting block is a traditional Andalusian palace feature. Paved with stone and shaded by surrounding walls, the owners and their guests would dismount their carriages before making their formal entrance. The carriages waited nearby under the watchful gaze of stone guardians and decorative reliefs.

Although more modest than the residential and ceremonial areas, the stables were built with durability and practicality in mind, reflecting the importance of equestrian culture in noble households. The design is functional but still echoes the architectural elegance of the rest of the palace, with traditional Andalusian touches such as vaulted ceilings and robust columns.

Be sure to try the espinacas con garbanzos, an earthy Sevillian staple made with stewed spinach and chickpeas, alongside a bowl of creamy, chilled salmorejo. And don’t miss the montadito de pringá, a humble yet flavorful open-faced sandwich piled with tender, slow-cooked meats. If you’re visiting in the summer, skip the sangria and do as the locals do: order a glass of the house vermouth, served cold it’s the perfect way to cool off.

Convento de San Leandro

For dessert, let’s head to another convent, this time, the Convento de San Leandro. When you’re ready to order, flip the “bell,” which resembles a light switch, and a voice will respond from behind the wall. Simply say what you’d like, place your money on the wooden turnstile, and wait as it slowly spins back to you with your order. You’ll receive your sweets, your change, and a little taste of Seville’s enduring traditions.

Casa de Pilatos

A short walk from the convent brings you over to the Casa de Pilatos, a palace that looks as though it were dreamed up by an architect who couldn’t choose just one style, but in the best way possible. This 16th-century palace, still inhabited by the Dukes of Medinaceli, is one of Seville’s most stunning examples of Mudéjar, Gothic, Renaissance, and Roman art and architecture all under one roof.

You can either book simple access to the thermal waters or indulge in a soothing massage using their signature orange flower blossom essential oils. Either way, you’ll emerge into the fading daylight feeling restored and ready for the evening.

La Fresquita

!When you’re ready for dinner, head over to La Fresquita, a bar that felt like a devotional altar to Semana Santa. Semana Santa is Seville’s Holy Week celebration, marked by solemn processions of ornate floats depicting the Passion of Christ. Carried by robed brotherhoods, these processions fill the streets with music, incense, and centuries-old tradition. Holy Week photos and memorabilia lined the walls of this crowded tapas bar. Squeeze your way inside and order montaditos and carne con tomate. The simple dishes burst with flavour! There are some small tables across the street, along the walls of the church, but if you’re looking for the local energy of Seville, stick to the crowded corners of the bar.

La Carbonería

As night falls, it’s time to seek out one of Seville’s most iconic experiences: a flamenco show. But rather than the polished, tourist-oriented performances in the city centre, we’re searching for a local gem. Wandering through the dim, quiet streets of the Santa Cruz district, it might feel like you’ve taken a wrong turn. Then, down an unassuming alley, a single lantern marks the spot, and you start to hear the sharp stomps, clapping, and the roar of an excited crowd.

La Carbonería feels like one of Seville’s best-kept secrets, though word of its magic has certainly spread. Once a coal warehouse, this rustic space has become a beloved local haunt for spontaneous flamenco. Inside, mismatched chairs surround long wooden tables beneath a soaring, timeworn ceiling. The walls are splashed with posters, old photos, and peeling paint.

Performances typically take place on the hour, every night from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. During the shows, cameras and recording are strictly prohibited, encouraging you, and everyone else in the audience, to be fully present. Without the glow of screens or the click of shutters, and in a building that feels untouched by time, you’re transported. The raw emotion of the music and dance holds you spellbound, as if the modern world has quietly slipped away.

The performances wrap up around 11 p.m., but the night is far from over. Inside the bar, the energy lingers, and out on the leafy patio, the atmosphere becomes especially lively. It’s the perfect place to while away the rest of the evening, drinks are delightfully cheap (cash only), and the vibe is unmatched. After a relaxed day exploring Seville’s hidden corners, there’s no better spot to end your night.
